[0:04] Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia mea podcast.
[0:25] Speaker 1: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's one thirty pm
[0:29] Speaker 1: Mountain time. That's two thirty for our friends in Santa Claus, Indiana,
[0:33] Speaker 1: on Wednesday, December seventeenth, and we're live from Meet Eater
[0:36] Speaker 1: HQ and Bozeman. We are currently at home with friends
[0:39] Speaker 1: and family because it is Christmas Day. I'm your host, Spencer,
[0:43] Speaker 1: joined today by Corey and Max. On today's show, we'll
[0:46] Speaker 1: interview David Fabian about having his elk skull stolen by
[0:50] Speaker 1: a rancher while hunting public land in Wyoming. Then we'll
[0:53] Speaker 1: have some top three lists, followed by an interview with
[0:56] Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan about the best books for whitetail hunters and five. Finally,
[1:00] Speaker 1: we'll answer some listener submitted questions. But first, Cory, my
[1:05] Speaker 1: head hurts just looking at you because you have a
[1:08] Speaker 1: black eye and a big bandage on your face. That's
[1:11] Speaker 1: not normal. You had to cancel coming into Trivia earlier
[1:17] Speaker 1: this week because you said it you got a concussion,
[1:19] Speaker 1: and I said, oh no, did it happen while you
[1:21] Speaker 1: were skiing? And you said no, no, Yeah, it's much
[1:25] Speaker 1: worse than that long story. Tell folks would happen better
[1:28] Speaker 1: or worse.
[1:28] Speaker 2: Uh, pretty embarrassing, but happy to share it with the world.
[1:33] Speaker 2: Got my dog's frisbee stuck into a tree.
[1:36] Speaker 1: How high up?
[1:37] Speaker 2: In a not high maybe ten feet you know, I
[1:40] Speaker 2: could almost reach it with a stick. That was plan A.
[1:42] Speaker 2: Plan B, naturally, was to throw a rock into the
[1:45] Speaker 2: tree right, try and knock it down. Picked up a
[1:49] Speaker 2: I don't know, nine to ten pound rock off the ground.
[1:52] Speaker 1: How big show me with your hand, like like softball size. Yeah,
[1:56] Speaker 1: bigger than a softball.
[1:57] Speaker 2: Okay, how much to await pounds? You know, just easy
[2:02] Speaker 2: enough to get some good velocity throwing it into the
[2:04] Speaker 2: tree to knock the frisbee down. I hit the frisbee,
[2:07] Speaker 2: but it was stuck in a weird little nest, bounced
[2:10] Speaker 2: off the tree, bounced off a limb, and then hit
[2:13] Speaker 2: me in the face. Oh gosh, it was headed right
[2:15] Speaker 2: for like between my eyes, and I turned my head
[2:18] Speaker 2: last second. It got me just under my eye obviously.
[2:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty brutal.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Nothing happened at first, but it about twenty minutes later
[2:26] Speaker 2: I passed out. So my concussion. It's been a couple
[2:31] Speaker 2: of days staying at home relaxing. Yeah, I couldn't partake
[2:34] Speaker 2: in trivia, which lucky for the other contestants obviously. So yeah, no,
[2:39] Speaker 2: feeling a lot better though, thanks for asking.
[2:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we're making him host radio despite him saying
[2:44] Speaker 1: he's still a little foggy.
[2:46] Speaker 3: A little foggy.
[2:46] Speaker 1: If I pass out, this will be one hell of
[2:49] Speaker 1: an episs good content. Yeah, does it stilvers good?
[2:53] Speaker 2: It's tight like everything in my right shields. It's just healing,
[2:57] Speaker 2: you know, So no, it doesn't hurt anymore. Yeah, just my.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, good on you for telling the truth. I
[3:03] Speaker 1: lied about that. I'd been like, yeah, I was skiing
[3:05] Speaker 1: a quadruple black diamonds, you know.
[3:09] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[3:10] Speaker 2: I don't want that karma to hit me even harder
[3:12] Speaker 2: than that rock, did you know?
[3:14] Speaker 1: So well it got you good, it did, stupid rock.
[3:17] Speaker 2: But I still need to go back to that tree,
[3:19] Speaker 2: get the frisbee, and the frisbee still out there. Yeah,
[3:23] Speaker 2: and then I'll bring home the rock too, and I
[3:25] Speaker 2: don't know, put it on my mantle.
[3:27] Speaker 1: We have garbs of like eighty miles per hour today.
[3:30] Speaker 1: That frisbee might be long gone.
[3:31] Speaker 2: It was up there, man. Let me tell you. The
[3:33] Speaker 2: rock didn't knock it down and it was a hell
[3:35] Speaker 2: of a throw too.
[3:36] Speaker 1: And now now you get to answer this question all
[3:38] Speaker 1: of Christmas hanging out with the family.
[3:42] Speaker 2: Oh, I can't wait.
[3:43] Speaker 1: So you've got a version of the story that's well
[3:46] Speaker 1: told at this point. Yep.
[3:48] Speaker 2: Nope, it's all good.
[3:49] Speaker 1: You're in good spirits about it, So that's good. Try
[3:51] Speaker 1: to be Thanks for coming today and this show was
[3:54] Speaker 1: coming out. You're gonna be on the live show that
[3:56] Speaker 1: we record tomorrow is live and so we're not even
[3:58] Speaker 1: going to address it. We're just gonna tell folks if
[4:00] Speaker 1: you want to know what happened to Corey's face, Ye,
[4:03] Speaker 1: you got to tune in next week.
[4:04] Speaker 2: There hanging all right.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Joining us on the line first is David Fabian, the
[4:09] Speaker 1: editor of Guns and AMMO Special Interest Publications. He had
[4:13] Speaker 1: a run in on public land in Wyoming with a
[4:15] Speaker 1: rancher earlier this fall that went viral on social media.
[4:18] Speaker 1: He's here to tell us that story. David. Welcome to
[4:20] Speaker 1: the show.
[4:21] Speaker 3: How Ady David Spencer, Hi, guys.
[4:24] Speaker 1: First thing, tell us about the area you were hunting
[4:26] Speaker 1: and how you accessed it.
[4:29] Speaker 5: Yeah, we were hunting this this chunk of landlocked public
[4:32] Speaker 5: public land that The only way to get there if
[4:36] Speaker 5: you don't have a family connection or deep pockets is
[4:39] Speaker 5: to take a helicopter. So we poked our rig and
[4:42] Speaker 5: we borded a helicopter and flew about four minutes and
[4:48] Speaker 5: set up camping. We could we could look back in
[4:50] Speaker 5: the distance maybe four and a half miles. We could
[4:52] Speaker 5: see our cars down there. But yeah, can't walk there.
[4:56] Speaker 3: M h.
[4:57] Speaker 1: And it took a few years for you to find
[4:59] Speaker 1: a pilot who was willing to fly you into these places?
[5:02] Speaker 1: What was that process?
[5:03] Speaker 5: Like?
[5:03] Speaker 3: Oh, incredibly frustrating.
[5:05] Speaker 5: I had this I had this idea that that you know,
[5:07] Speaker 5: I want to hunt land, my public land, because it's
[5:09] Speaker 5: got to be the shangri la of oh yeah, public land.
[5:13] Speaker 5: And so I finally I finally got the plan together,
[5:17] Speaker 5: and and then I called air operator after air operator
[5:20] Speaker 5: after air operator, and no one, No one would do it.
[5:24] Speaker 5: I think it was my twenty sixth or twenty seventh
[5:26] Speaker 5: whoa look opter or plane pilot I spoke to that
[5:29] Speaker 5: said yeah, I'd love to do it.
[5:31] Speaker 1: Okay, you found you found the right guy. I read
[5:34] Speaker 1: that at one point you were talking to someone who
[5:36] Speaker 1: could drop you in there with a hot air balloon. Correct.
[5:39] Speaker 5: No, No, I was so desperate to make a hunt
[5:43] Speaker 5: happen that I called a hot air balloon manufacturer. Oh
[5:46] Speaker 5: and I said, I said, I said, guys, have you
[5:48] Speaker 5: ever sold any hot air balloons for DIY hunters?
[5:51] Speaker 3: And they go, uh no, that's the first we've heard
[5:54] Speaker 3: of this.
[5:55] Speaker 5: And they say, they said to me, you do realize
[5:57] Speaker 5: you can't steer them right, And I did realize and
[6:00] Speaker 5: I still do think that it could be done. So
[6:03] Speaker 5: maybe next year we'll be talking about my hot air
[6:05] Speaker 5: balloon hunt.
[6:05] Speaker 1: Uh huh, Yeah, you were desperate. Max, our co host,
[6:08] Speaker 1: has a question.
[6:09] Speaker 6: Yeah, David, what's Wyoming's rule about flying and hunting the
[6:13] Speaker 6: same day.
[6:14] Speaker 5: You can do it, no problem if you use it
[6:15] Speaker 5: for if you use the aircraft for transportation purposes and
[6:18] Speaker 5: not scouting, you're good to go.
[6:20] Speaker 1: Okay, cool, Okay, So you get the four minute helicopter
[6:23] Speaker 1: ride into your spot. Tell us about the hunt itself,
[6:25] Speaker 1: which took place back in November.
[6:29] Speaker 3: So the hunt itself is very special.
[6:32] Speaker 5: My buddy had been scheming on getting on this land
[6:35] Speaker 5: to hunt for like twenty some years, and he said,
[6:37] Speaker 5: if you can get us a helicopter, then we'll have
[6:39] Speaker 5: a great al hunt. Well, we got the helicopter and
[6:42] Speaker 5: we had I mean, we had a great elk hunt,
[6:46] Speaker 5: but the hunt itself was overshadowed by two things. One
[6:50] Speaker 5: obviously we'll get to, but we also happened to have
[6:53] Speaker 5: that amazing Northern lions display.
[6:56] Speaker 6: On the Oh, that's awesome.
[6:58] Speaker 5: After we got a double on nice mature bulls, we
[7:01] Speaker 5: went back to camp and it was like a six
[7:04] Speaker 5: hour show. And the time lapse of the videographer got
[7:07] Speaker 5: on it is just like it gives me goosebumps even
[7:09] Speaker 5: telling the story thinking about it.
[7:11] Speaker 1: Good stuff. So you were, you were processing when one
[7:14] Speaker 1: of the bulls, when when the thing happened? Uh and
[7:18] Speaker 1: and you said, quote the strangest hunting encounter of your life.
[7:22] Speaker 1: That's how you described in your article on Peterson's hunting
[7:24] Speaker 1: what happened.
[7:26] Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, there's there's nothing that even comes close
[7:28] Speaker 5: to this one. I've had, I've had issues with people
[7:31] Speaker 5: like we all had on public land, but but nothing
[7:34] Speaker 5: like this. So so my buddy and I we left
[7:37] Speaker 5: our camp and hiked to the kill site. When we
[7:39] Speaker 5: both killed, we killed two bulls that were probably one
[7:42] Speaker 5: hundred and fifty yards apart. So we uh, we hiked
[7:45] Speaker 5: back to my ball, and we got there at nine
[7:47] Speaker 5: o'clock in the morning, and we're gonna start packing meat,
[7:49] Speaker 5: and the other guys were gonna come meet us as
[7:51] Speaker 5: soon as they got done due to filming. So we
[7:53] Speaker 5: sit down at my bowl and we look down below,
[7:56] Speaker 5: and there walking across his flat is a rancher or
[7:59] Speaker 5: another hunt. Sure he's got a you know, elk handler's
[8:01] Speaker 5: over his shoulder. And so I think myself, huh, you
[8:04] Speaker 5: know whatever, we got we got two elk in this
[8:06] Speaker 5: place last night. The rancher obviously shot one in there
[8:10] Speaker 5: as well. Yeah, they didn'tdn't think anything of it. And
[8:13] Speaker 5: my buddy, he said, I wonder if that's our other elk,
[8:17] Speaker 5: And just then this light bulb goes off my head, like,
[8:20] Speaker 5: holy cow, could we really have Could we really be
[8:24] Speaker 5: witnessing an elk theft in the process from from a
[8:27] Speaker 5: rancher who obviously came on private across private ground. And
[8:30] Speaker 5: so I just brought my binoculars.
[8:33] Speaker 3: He didn't bring me.
[8:33] Speaker 5: Left it back camp, but he siddly see binoculars, and
[8:37] Speaker 5: so we took my binoculars and looked down there two
[8:39] Speaker 5: hundred yards and he recognized the back forks of of
[8:43] Speaker 5: the elks as being one that our buddy Ryan shot,
[8:47] Speaker 5: and he said, he said, I think that's our elk,
[8:50] Speaker 5: and so I'm thinking, still no way, Like, what are
[8:54] Speaker 5: the It's not even the realm of possibility. So he says,
[8:57] Speaker 5: stay here, keep an eye on the brush line because
[8:59] Speaker 5: the guy walked in the brush. So so Ben looked
[9:01] Speaker 5: at him for I mean, he just had seconds to
[9:03] Speaker 5: determine that that could be our or hell. He said,
[9:05] Speaker 5: stay here and keep looking down at the at the
[9:07] Speaker 5: brush line. So I stayed there, and I expected this
[9:11] Speaker 5: this rancher, I'd be him. I expected this rancher would
[9:14] Speaker 5: come out and go get a quarter and take the
[9:16] Speaker 5: quarter and walk into the brush. It never came out.
[9:19] Speaker 5: And so a few minutes later, once once bend and
[9:21] Speaker 5: made up to the other kill site, all of a sudden,
[9:24] Speaker 5: I hear this voice come booming down and he said
[9:27] Speaker 5: he stole our out.
[9:27] Speaker 3: Go after him. And it's like, okay. Now that's where
[9:31] Speaker 3: it became the weirdest moment of my hunting, of my
[9:33] Speaker 3: hunting career.
[9:34] Speaker 5: And I mean, it's one thing to have interactions with people,
[9:38] Speaker 5: but it's a whole different thing when you catch someone
[9:41] Speaker 5: stealing your antlers, and they don't want you there to
[9:46] Speaker 5: begin with. I mean, that's just that's just a given.
[9:48] Speaker 5: But they go to the go to the degree of stealing.
[9:51] Speaker 5: You're stealing from you, and then they're hiding in brush line.
[9:54] Speaker 5: You just caught him like approaching that brush line. I
[9:57] Speaker 5: cannot even describe the pangs of fear that went through me,
[10:02] Speaker 5: Like I was terrified, but.
[10:05] Speaker 3: But we had to do it, so fam got there first.
[10:08] Speaker 1: Well, go ahead, No, I was just going to recap you.
[10:10] Speaker 1: You've now you've got three balls down, You've you're working
[10:14] Speaker 1: on the meat. You've watched this rancher from two hundred
[10:17] Speaker 1: yards away walk into the brush with your elk head
[10:20] Speaker 1: and then you guys march over there. What's the conversation
[10:23] Speaker 1: like with the rancher.
[10:25] Speaker 5: Well, my my buddy didn't vended most of the talking
[10:28] Speaker 5: at first, and he was he was obviously really pissed.
[10:30] Speaker 5: He wanted the guy to come out. The guy was
[10:31] Speaker 5: hiding in there. He wouldn't come out. He finally he
[10:34] Speaker 5: finally came out, and it's a it's a seventy year
[10:37] Speaker 5: old dude, and I'm just like my mind is blown,
[10:39] Speaker 5: Like I can't even say anything for the first For
[10:42] Speaker 5: the first few minutes, probably I was just recording with
[10:45] Speaker 5: my with my phone because I knew this was evidence
[10:47] Speaker 5: that we're gonna have to use. Uh and so that
[10:50] Speaker 5: is one thing that anyone in this situation, like we've
[10:53] Speaker 5: got amazing technology and just pulling out your phone and recording.
[10:57] Speaker 3: Stuff, we'll really cover your cover your basis. But uh.
[11:01] Speaker 5: Anyways, the conversation was was was very simple, like why
[11:04] Speaker 5: did this happen?
[11:05] Speaker 3: What? What what purpose did you steal this lkad for? Like, like,
[11:10] Speaker 3: what's going on? And the guy the guy didn't didn't answer.
[11:12] Speaker 5: He did a bunch of a bunch of misdirection, wouldn't
[11:15] Speaker 5: identify himself as a rancher, denied even having the bowl.
[11:19] Speaker 3: We called him out in all this stuff.
[11:20] Speaker 5: But ultimately he said the reason was he didn't he
[11:23] Speaker 5: didn't want us hunting on this outfit.
[11:25] Speaker 3: That's what he said.
[11:26] Speaker 5: This outfit meaning the public land that he's had sole
[11:29] Speaker 5: access to for uh. I guess probably forty five years.
[11:33] Speaker 5: So he's been there.
[11:34] Speaker 1: And at some point in this process, when you guys
[11:37] Speaker 1: are glassing him or walking over there, you you heard
[11:40] Speaker 1: a few gunshots? Correct? Where did those play? End of
[11:42] Speaker 1: the story.
[11:43] Speaker 3: I can't.
[11:44] Speaker 5: I can't confirm where those gunshots came from or who
[11:48] Speaker 5: did it even but I believe that that rancher shot
[11:51] Speaker 5: three times that morning, and I don't.
[11:53] Speaker 3: I don't, I can't. I can't understand the logic behind
[11:56] Speaker 3: that one.
[11:57] Speaker 5: But anyways, when when we saw him, uh, he never
[11:59] Speaker 5: had a right so I can't. I can't confirm it
[12:02] Speaker 5: with him nor what he did.
[12:04] Speaker 3: But I'm guessing.
[12:05] Speaker 5: I'm guessing he probably did it to to signify like, hey,
[12:08] Speaker 5: I got an animal, and then if if someone sees
[12:10] Speaker 5: him packing it out, like that's that's what happened.
[12:12] Speaker 3: But that's that's just that's just pure theory. I don't.
[12:14] Speaker 3: I don't think he did it to scare us or anything.
[12:16] Speaker 5: Like when you're when you're in public plan people people
[12:19] Speaker 5: shoot and you know you're not gonna you can get
[12:21] Speaker 5: out of there because another hunter's in there.
[12:23] Speaker 1: All right, So at the beginning of the conversation, the
[12:25] Speaker 1: rancher is is denying the whole thing, right, But at
[12:27] Speaker 1: some point you get him to show you where the
[12:30] Speaker 1: skull is. How did that go down? I know he uh.
[12:34] Speaker 5: I think I think he said to us the first
[12:36] Speaker 5: first time was what bowl, and and Ben said the
[12:39] Speaker 5: one you just saw, the one we just saw you
[12:41] Speaker 5: packed into the brush and so uh and so after
[12:44] Speaker 5: after a few minutes of the conversation, uh, Ben goes,
[12:47] Speaker 5: you want me, We'll get the bull, and he goes
[12:49] Speaker 5: have at it.
[12:50] Speaker 3: So Ben walks in there and he looks.
[12:51] Speaker 5: Down bottom of this little cut and there's and there's
[12:54] Speaker 5: our buddy Ryan's l Candler's. So so not only did
[12:57] Speaker 5: he did he take the bull and put it in
[12:58] Speaker 5: the brush lamp, but he tossed it down this this
[13:00] Speaker 5: ten foot ten foot ditch and and climbed down it
[13:04] Speaker 5: was it was it was not easy to get down there,
[13:06] Speaker 5: but he climbed down there, and he placed it in
[13:08] Speaker 5: a place where you could barely see it. I know
[13:10] Speaker 5: when I went to recover the antlers, because I got
[13:12] Speaker 5: him out. When I jumped down there, I uh, I looked,
[13:15] Speaker 5: and sure enough there was there was fresh boot tracks
[13:17] Speaker 5: in there, like he'd actually gone to the effort of
[13:19] Speaker 5: hiding them so you could you could barely find it.
[13:21] Speaker 1: And then weirdly he like offers to help you guys
[13:25] Speaker 1: at that point, right, Well, that's.
[13:28] Speaker 3: That's interesting how that worked out.
[13:29] Speaker 5: Because I was I was relieved that we uh, that
[13:34] Speaker 5: we got the elk at back, and I was relieved
[13:36] Speaker 5: that we didn't get shot. Truthfully, that was my biggest
[13:38] Speaker 5: fear in the whole thing. But uh, but after we
[13:40] Speaker 5: after we after attentions cooled, I realized that, hey, you know,
[13:45] Speaker 5: that guy packed this elkhead down, you know, three hundred
[13:48] Speaker 5: vertical feet, so three hundred maybe even four hundred vertical
[13:51] Speaker 5: feet and at least three hundred yards. So I said,
[13:54] Speaker 5: how in the hell are we going to get it
[13:55] Speaker 5: back up to the kill site? Like, we got to
[13:56] Speaker 5: pack it up now, So what are you gonna do?
[13:58] Speaker 5: And I really I thought I thought he was going
[14:01] Speaker 5: to say, look, guys, I messed up. You know, instead
[14:04] Speaker 5: of instead of taking out there, you can just come
[14:06] Speaker 5: out my ranch, go get your cars, take your stuff out.
[14:08] Speaker 1: That one.
[14:09] Speaker 3: I was waiting for that because I was thinking, okay, cool, I'd.
[14:12] Speaker 6: Say, gave us some money on the helicopter, right.
[14:14] Speaker 3: It would have saved us so much money if you would,
[14:16] Speaker 3: if you would have done that. But he didn't. He
[14:18] Speaker 3: never did. He did.
[14:19] Speaker 5: He did, however, offer to pack it up, so I
[14:21] Speaker 5: thought that was that was a little bit.
[14:23] Speaker 3: Of a redemption on his behalf.
[14:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, so you guys get the elk, then back to
[14:28] Speaker 1: your camp, you and the rancher go your separate ways.
[14:31] Speaker 1: At what point do you contact the authorities? And how
[14:33] Speaker 1: did that conversation go.
[14:35] Speaker 5: As soon as we had service, Yeah, as soon as
[14:37] Speaker 5: we had service, we well, we waited for our buddies
[14:40] Speaker 5: to get back, and we said, he said, you'd think
[14:42] Speaker 5: you think the hunt was a was a cool story,
[14:44] Speaker 5: like just wait to you, wait till you see what
[14:46] Speaker 5: we but we just witnessed. And so, I mean, our
[14:49] Speaker 5: friends were just slack jawed when we told him the story,
[14:52] Speaker 5: like they thought they were we were messing with them
[14:54] Speaker 5: at first, and we're like, no, I promise you we
[14:56] Speaker 5: were not messing with you. But yeah, so we went
[14:58] Speaker 5: h We went back to camp that night and there
[15:00] Speaker 5: we had good service. So the phone calls made to
[15:03] Speaker 5: the game warden and said, yep, this happened, we'll be
[15:05] Speaker 5: out tomorrow.
[15:06] Speaker 3: What do we do?
[15:06] Speaker 5: And the game warden said, uh, please meet me because
[15:09] Speaker 5: that's a that's a very odd story. And so and
[15:12] Speaker 5: so the next day we flew out and met with
[15:14] Speaker 5: the game warden and and told them and everyone in
[15:17] Speaker 5: law enforcement, everyone period, that here's the story. They all
[15:20] Speaker 5: say the same thing, like, I can't even I cannot
[15:23] Speaker 5: believe that happened.
[15:25] Speaker 6: Yeah, is that considered like hunting harassment then? Or what
[15:28] Speaker 6: did the game wardens actually say?
[15:30] Speaker 3: That's that's a great that's a great question.
[15:32] Speaker 5: And I don't I don't fully know what what the
[15:35] Speaker 5: long term legal outcome is going to be. But but yeah,
[15:38] Speaker 5: we we asked the word and the same thing, like like,
[15:41] Speaker 5: what's gonna happen here? And he goes, he goes, most
[15:43] Speaker 5: I can do his hunting harassment, but he goes, after
[15:45] Speaker 5: seeing the after seeing the videos that we that we made,
[15:48] Speaker 5: he said, uh, he said, this goes way beyond that.
[15:50] Speaker 5: So I'm gonna I'm gonna grow up in the local
[15:53] Speaker 5: sheriff's office and they're gonna do investigation and then we'll
[15:56] Speaker 5: our charges to the prosecutor, you know, entirety.
[15:58] Speaker 1: God, this this has been about month removed from when
[16:01] Speaker 1: it happened. The legal process is still playing out at
[16:03] Speaker 1: this point, right Yeah.
[16:05] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but god, I am I am. I am
[16:08] Speaker 5: optimistic because uh, a few weeks ago, I did get
[16:11] Speaker 5: a phone call from the from the sheriff's office and
[16:14] Speaker 5: and they actually said like, hey, we're pursuing this. We're
[16:16] Speaker 5: about to hand this to the prosecutor. So he will
[16:18] Speaker 5: he will be he will be punished for what he did.
[16:21] Speaker 5: And and that's good. That's a good thing because the
[16:24] Speaker 5: part that that scares me the most is is not
[16:26] Speaker 5: the not the brazen act that that that a lot
[16:29] Speaker 5: of these landowners go to uh to deter you from
[16:32] Speaker 5: legally accessing it with aircraft. But I worry if this
[16:35] Speaker 5: guy gets off with just a slap on the wrist,
[16:37] Speaker 5: that it's gonna it's gonna put future fly on hunters
[16:39] Speaker 5: in danger.
[16:40] Speaker 3: I mean some ultimately something bad is gonna happen.
[16:42] Speaker 5: Like it's one thing to lose nel Ken, but it'd
[16:45] Speaker 5: be just a tragedy for someone to lose their life.
[16:47] Speaker 1: M uh. Now this was not your first fly in hunt.
[16:51] Speaker 1: Have you had problems in the past with neighboring landowners?
[16:55] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[16:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
[16:56] Speaker 5: See when I when I first started this, I thought
[16:59] Speaker 5: to myself, like, yeah, they're gonna annoyed, But what are
[17:01] Speaker 5: they gonna do? It's not their land, you know, really,
[17:04] Speaker 5: what are they gonna do? Well, what I found out
[17:06] Speaker 5: now is in their minds it is their land. They
[17:10] Speaker 5: don't have deeded, they don't have the deeded deeded rights
[17:13] Speaker 5: to it. But but they genuinely do feel and this
[17:16] Speaker 5: is this is a blanket statement. So I'm just I'm
[17:18] Speaker 5: just talking with the people we've interacted with. But every
[17:21] Speaker 5: single landowner that we've had interactions with has been less
[17:26] Speaker 5: than less than welcoming.
[17:27] Speaker 3: And and and some.
[17:29] Speaker 5: People there's there's a there's a couple that has a massive,
[17:32] Speaker 5: a massive ranch that surrounds I mean, I don't know,
[17:37] Speaker 5: maybe thirty thousand total acres.
[17:38] Speaker 3: Of public landlocked land.
[17:40] Speaker 5: But but they they're they're so extreme that they pester
[17:44] Speaker 5: us on the hunts. They find excuses to go in
[17:46] Speaker 5: there looking for cows. They they would this lady would
[17:49] Speaker 5: take her kids. Like in October, we did a flying
[17:53] Speaker 5: deer hunt and my dad and his high school buddy,
[17:55] Speaker 5: two seventy five year olds are in there hunting deer
[17:58] Speaker 5: and cow elk, and and this lady shows up above
[18:00] Speaker 5: their ridge in the middle of nowhere, and she takes
[18:03] Speaker 5: her kids for a for a loud walk right above
[18:05] Speaker 5: their camp. It's like, it's so annoying, but but she
[18:08] Speaker 5: took it to she took it two level that that
[18:11] Speaker 5: is still surprising me. She told our helicopter pilot. She
[18:14] Speaker 5: said that if if I can't have sole access to
[18:18] Speaker 5: that land and you guys keep coming in by helicopter,
[18:21] Speaker 5: then I'm going going there and ruin that land, ruin
[18:23] Speaker 5: that land so.
[18:24] Speaker 3: No one can take advantage of someone can use it.
[18:27] Speaker 1: And you're just you're like pretty vulnerable back there in
[18:30] Speaker 1: their situations.
[18:32] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I never I've never been in combat. But
[18:34] Speaker 5: it it is like almost like you're getting dropped off
[18:37] Speaker 5: on an island because because yeah, you could leave if
[18:40] Speaker 5: you wanted to, but.
[18:41] Speaker 3: You really can't, like you're gonna be trust back trespass
[18:44] Speaker 3: to get out of there.
[18:45] Speaker 5: And the first time I went in, uh, the helicopter,
[18:49] Speaker 5: the helicopter landed and gave us a big group briefing,
[18:52] Speaker 5: and so we're sitting around the helicopter and finally, after
[18:55] Speaker 5: after thirty minutes of how to avoid getting your head
[18:57] Speaker 5: chopped off, we boarded it our flight for the for
[19:00] Speaker 5: the first trip in and this and this rancher came
[19:03] Speaker 5: around us on this four wheeler and the helicopter wasn't
[19:05] Speaker 5: running yet, but he said, he said, good luck, We'll
[19:09] Speaker 5: be seeing you soon.
[19:10] Speaker 3: And he said it like such a such a spooky
[19:12] Speaker 3: villain kind of way almost like.
[19:14] Speaker 5: Sorry, I assure you that that first night in there,
[19:16] Speaker 5: I was ready for a posse of landowners to come
[19:18] Speaker 5: there and try to lynch us from a tree.
[19:21] Speaker 1: Yeah. Last question, David, you and I worked together about
[19:24] Speaker 1: a decade ago when I was at Peterson Hunting in Illinois.
[19:27] Speaker 1: How much do you miss me?
[19:29] Speaker 3: How much do I miss you?
[19:30] Speaker 1: Or loaded question me? Well, you can answer both, yeah,
[19:34] Speaker 1: how much you miss me? And then tell us how
[19:35] Speaker 1: much you miss Peoria on a.
[19:37] Speaker 3: Scale one to ten. I miss you nine point eight.
[19:39] Speaker 5: All right, Yes, I really do on a scale one
[19:43] Speaker 5: to ten for Peoria.
[19:44] Speaker 3: I just missed the people. I don't miss the place
[19:46] Speaker 3: at all.
[19:46] Speaker 1: Okay, so same good answer. Yeah.
[19:49] Speaker 3: You can read.
[19:50] Speaker 1: David's full story about the hunt in his article called
[19:53] Speaker 1: a Landowner Stole Our Trophy elk on Peterson Hunning dot com. David,
[19:57] Speaker 1: thanks for joining us and telling the story.
[19:59] Speaker 3: Thanks take care see David's.
[20:03] Speaker 1: Yeah wild crazy stuff.
[20:04] Speaker 2: Yeah, I now even know what to do well. And
[20:07] Speaker 2: this crazy part is not only to land owners, not
[20:10] Speaker 2: all of them, obviously, it's it's it's a few that
[20:12] Speaker 2: get a little frustrated with this. But not only do
[20:14] Speaker 2: they believe that the land is theirs, but the animals
[20:17] Speaker 2: are theirs too. Yeah, there's a lot of that going
[20:20] Speaker 2: on that just is mind blowing me. There's a dollar
[20:22] Speaker 2: amount on each one of those trop And.
[20:24] Speaker 6: It's so crazy too because a lot of times when
[20:26] Speaker 6: I see like there's different land for sale and listing,
[20:30] Speaker 6: the realtors will advertise like, oh so and so much
[20:35] Speaker 6: public land landlocked.
[20:37] Speaker 1: Yeah right, you know, and I'm.
[20:38] Speaker 6: Just like, that's not considered theirs, but.
[20:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's uh wild timing that they like saw
[20:45] Speaker 1: it go down. You know, if they'd have been five
[20:47] Speaker 1: minutes behind in the process and didn't see it happen,
[20:50] Speaker 1: who knows how that story would have been different.
[20:52] Speaker 3: Right, all right.
[20:55] Speaker 1: Normally at this point in the show we take a
[20:57] Speaker 1: break for some listener feedback, but since we're out live,
[21:00] Speaker 1: these are questions that were submitted ahead of time, we'll
[21:03] Speaker 1: hit a few of them now and then a few
[21:05] Speaker 1: at the end of the show. The first one is
[21:07] Speaker 1: from Ryan Bowlinger Favorite way to cook waterfowl Max.
[21:13] Speaker 6: If I could every single time, I would cook skin
[21:17] Speaker 6: on duck, for sure, But that's not as an option,
[21:20] Speaker 6: especially like early season when they don't they're not as fatty.
[21:24] Speaker 6: They still have pin feathers. So a lot of times,
[21:27] Speaker 6: like duck or goose, just cook it like a steak, trim,
[21:30] Speaker 6: trim all the silver skin off, salt, pepper, garlic, turns
[21:34] Speaker 6: out awesome, especially like the snow geese, the speckle bellies,
[21:38] Speaker 6: even like some of your dabbler ducks. Yeah that's great,
[21:42] Speaker 6: but yeah, I've done things like the crock pot barbecue,
[21:47] Speaker 6: shredded meat, tacos. Options are really endless. I know Steve's
[21:53] Speaker 6: favorite way is like duck cunfy, which is also really good,
[21:58] Speaker 6: but yeah, duck or goose for strown me. I just
[22:00] Speaker 6: made some over thanksgaving phenomenal.
[22:03] Speaker 1: All these recipes on the medeater dot com. I think
[22:05] Speaker 1: my best waterfowl I've had was when Cal and I
[22:08] Speaker 1: were filming part of My Plate when we did the
[22:10] Speaker 1: cood episode. We did side by side comparison with a
[22:13] Speaker 1: mallard that the skin was left on. We cooked it
[22:15] Speaker 1: on hot rill, just like you said with a steak,
[22:18] Speaker 1: and it was. It was phenomenal. You would struggle in
[22:21] Speaker 1: a Pepsi challenge to identify that that was a mallard
[22:25] Speaker 1: versus a piece of beef. It was. It was really great.
[22:27] Speaker 6: Yeah, I think Steve is doing a comparison with a
[22:30] Speaker 6: Merganzer GoldenEye and a.
[22:33] Speaker 1: Mallard dabbler and a couple of divers. We'll see how
[22:38] Speaker 1: that goes. Corey favorite way to cook waterfowl, Well, I
[22:42] Speaker 1: don't really have much of a duck in this fight.
[22:43] Speaker 2: I don't do a lot of waterfowl hunting, but just
[22:46] Speaker 2: same exactly, I would say, the same exact way I
[22:48] Speaker 2: cook any steak, which is in a hot cast iron pan.
[22:52] Speaker 1: All right. Next question from Will pallakangis how do you
[22:56] Speaker 1: guys wash your marinal wool bass layers. I reached out
[23:00] Speaker 1: to the folks at First Light to get an official
[23:02] Speaker 1: answer on this because I didn't want to lead anyone astray.
[23:05] Speaker 1: Here's what they told me. Some companies make cleaners that
[23:08] Speaker 1: are specifically for Marina wool products. One of them is Grangers,
[23:12] Speaker 1: which First Light really likes. Some of the staff over
[23:15] Speaker 1: there and me included just uses dead down wind. And
[23:18] Speaker 1: if you aren't buying a special detergent for your base layers,
[23:22] Speaker 1: they say to look for labels that say gentle or
[23:25] Speaker 1: mild on them. As far as the washing goes, they
[23:28] Speaker 1: say it's really important to wash on a gentle cycle
[23:30] Speaker 1: with cold water. Try to separate different fabrics and colors.
[23:33] Speaker 1: For example, you don't want to put a marinal wool
[23:36] Speaker 1: kiln hoodie in washing. It has a heavy coat with velcro,
[23:40] Speaker 1: It's going to get beat up. For drying, they say
[23:42] Speaker 1: do a tumble dry or a low dry. Blasting the
[23:47] Speaker 1: marina wool in a hot dry or might shrink it.
[23:49] Speaker 1: So simply put mild detergent or specialized detergent like Grangers,
[23:55] Speaker 1: and then wash and dry at cool temps.
[23:58] Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm so horrible at this. I just throw everything
[24:01] Speaker 6: together and wash it the same, dryads the same. But
[24:06] Speaker 6: I do try. If I know I'm doing some renal, well,
[24:08] Speaker 6: I'll like try to keep it on low for drying
[24:11] Speaker 6: aspect for sure.
[24:12] Speaker 1: But yeah, I am so bad at it.
[24:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, low and slow. Same with down products too, so
[24:17] Speaker 2: natural fibers, low lightwash and then either a super light
[24:22] Speaker 2: tumble or even just hang it outside. Sure got nice
[24:24] Speaker 2: weather hanging in a pine tree.
[24:26] Speaker 1: Yep, Open air and sunlight can do a lot for
[24:28] Speaker 1: your smelly clothes. Okay, Cameron jo seven best piece of
[24:33] Speaker 1: hunting gear you use that's under fifty dollars. I'll do
[24:37] Speaker 1: even one better. I'll go under one dollar handwarmers and
[24:41] Speaker 1: tow warmers. Anyone, anyone you know who hunts her fishes
[24:44] Speaker 1: north of the Mason Dixon line, they'll find a use
[24:47] Speaker 1: for some handwarmers and some tow warmers. I think they're
[24:50] Speaker 1: still like ninety eight cents. When I was hunting in
[24:53] Speaker 1: Illinois it was single digits. Having those handwarmers and tow
[24:57] Speaker 1: warmers was like as important as my coat, you know.
[24:59] Speaker 1: And it's like a five hundred dollars coat versus a
[25:01] Speaker 1: one dollar hand warmer. They'll they'll really keep you out
[25:04] Speaker 1: there longer.
[25:05] Speaker 6: Do you find your feet? If you do the toe warmers,
[25:07] Speaker 6: your feet get too sweaty or too warm, and they
[25:10] Speaker 6: get then they get sweaty and then they get cold.
[25:12] Speaker 1: Mm no, okay. But I'm also not like walking around
[25:15] Speaker 1: in them either, right, Like, it's like, okay, this is
[25:18] Speaker 1: where I'm partier by but for the next two hours.
[25:21] Speaker 1: So throwing a toe warmer in there. Favorite piece of
[25:24] Speaker 1: gear under fifty dollars.
[25:25] Speaker 6: Max for me. It's got to be like neck gator
[25:30] Speaker 6: or a buff Yeah, actually got.
[25:33] Speaker 1: One right here.
[25:34] Speaker 6: This is the Tundra cold weather net gator forty bucks
[25:40] Speaker 6: works as a face mask, and it just works as
[25:43] Speaker 6: just keeping the wind off the back of your neck.
[25:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it. I like them, if you know,
[25:48] Speaker 1: even I'm a hunting in September obviously not that heavy
[25:51] Speaker 1: of one, but yeah, just the sun and wind.
[25:53] Speaker 6: I mean, just like something to help conceal your face
[25:55] Speaker 6: a little bit and then like if you can, it
[25:58] Speaker 6: kills two birds in one stone.
[25:59] Speaker 1: So yeah, Corey, tell Cameron a favorite piece of hunting
[26:03] Speaker 1: gear under fifty.
[26:04] Speaker 2: Dollars A cheap pair of aftermarket insols. Obviously, go big
[26:09] Speaker 2: and get some custom orthotics that could run you one
[26:11] Speaker 2: hundred to two hundred dollars.
[26:13] Speaker 1: What's your favorite?
[26:14] Speaker 2: I really like superfeet just because they're there. I think
[26:17] Speaker 2: there may be a little over fifty dollars now, but
[26:19] Speaker 2: just google aftermarket insouls and you'll find some under fifty dollars.
[26:22] Speaker 6: For sure.
[26:22] Speaker 2: Anything's better than the junk that they give you in
[26:25] Speaker 2: the boots. I mean, they'll last you a couple months.
[26:28] Speaker 2: But do your feet a favor and get aftermarket insols.
[26:31] Speaker 2: Make sure it matches your arch, so you might have
[26:34] Speaker 2: to bump up a size to make sure it fits
[26:36] Speaker 2: your arch. So if you can go into a bootstore
[26:39] Speaker 2: or any sporting good store and try and put your
[26:41] Speaker 2: foot on the insol, make sure it lines up with
[26:44] Speaker 2: your arch, and then you can cut it to fit
[26:46] Speaker 2: into your boot.
[26:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, put that on the Christmas list. The cutting is porn.
[26:49] Speaker 1: If you get slightly oversized and they start to roll
[26:52] Speaker 1: in your in your boot, that's that's no good. Next
[26:55] Speaker 1: question is from mo Heyeskawa. What is Phil's favorite ever
[27:01] Speaker 1: podcast episode of Meat Eater?
[27:04] Speaker 4: Thanks mo.
[27:05] Speaker 7: I don't know if I have a specific one that
[27:07] Speaker 7: sticks out, but I love the the authors that Steve
[27:11] Speaker 7: brings in because you know, I can. I don't connect
[27:15] Speaker 7: as much to all the very specific hunting talk, but
[27:18] Speaker 7: I love it when Steve specifically like a nautical disaster,
[27:20] Speaker 7: which Steve loves. And I also love, you know, from
[27:23] Speaker 7: the Edmund Fits to having David Grant talking about the
[27:26] Speaker 7: Wager because you can those guys just know their stuff
[27:29] Speaker 7: so well and Steve that you can feel Steve's passion
[27:32] Speaker 7: when he's asking questions. I also love the awkward part
[27:35] Speaker 7: of every conversation with an author when Steve tries to
[27:37] Speaker 7: get them to talk about the end of the book
[27:39] Speaker 7: and they don't want to, and He's.
[27:40] Speaker 4: Like, oh, come on, it's fun.
[27:42] Speaker 5: You know.
[27:42] Speaker 4: It never fails to amuse me.
[27:44] Speaker 7: And then it's like, I love the ones that stick
[27:46] Speaker 7: out in my mind are the ones that we had
[27:47] Speaker 7: to travel for. Like I loved going going to Werner
[27:49] Speaker 7: Hertzog's house was a trip. Going to LA with Spencer
[27:53] Speaker 7: and Randall and doing the show with Rob Lowe and
[27:56] Speaker 7: Sirius or David Chang at the Ringer was fun. Yeah,
[28:00] Speaker 7: So those are those are my favorites. I love the
[28:02] Speaker 7: authors and the comedians like Bradleyoni was a lot of
[28:05] Speaker 7: fund Dana Doute was a lot of fun too.
[28:08] Speaker 1: All right, Corey's going to answer this next one from
[28:11] Speaker 1: Redbeard fly Fishing. If you were hunting in snow too
[28:14] Speaker 1: deep for gators, what kind of pants do you like?
[28:17] Speaker 2: I'd have to go at the First Light Omen Storm
[28:20] Speaker 2: shelter pants. They got the built in splash guard velcro
[28:24] Speaker 2: that goes around your boots, plus the bootlace hook like
[28:27] Speaker 2: most gators have that keep them down when you're trudging
[28:30] Speaker 2: through the snow, and they're waterproof. Obviously they're light full
[28:33] Speaker 2: vents knee pads. I mean, I think that's my favorite
[28:36] Speaker 2: thing First Light makes in there.
[28:38] Speaker 1: What are they again?
[28:38] Speaker 2: The omen pant?
[28:40] Speaker 5: Ok?
[28:41] Speaker 1: So will you wear the gators with those ors ad overkill.
[28:44] Speaker 2: Man, if it was like melting snow and super sloppy,
[28:48] Speaker 2: I've done it, certainly, gators than those over the top,
[28:50] Speaker 2: but dry snow, no, no need. They're great for whatever.
[28:54] Speaker 2: I use the backcountry skiing too.
[28:56] Speaker 1: All right, next question, we got two more left in
[28:58] Speaker 1: this round. This is from Willie Scoey or will Is Kohe.
[29:03] Speaker 1: I'm not sure what is Max's white whale for waterfowl?
[29:08] Speaker 6: Oh, that's a great question.
[29:09] Speaker 1: I don't even have a guess. Something from the Arctic
[29:11] Speaker 1: Circle or like not even that. Okay, something banded? What
[29:14] Speaker 1: what is it? Yeah?
[29:15] Speaker 6: No, it's I mean, people might make fun of me
[29:19] Speaker 6: and because they probably have many of these, but I've
[29:23] Speaker 6: never killed, were never harvested, abandoned Drake Mallard really so yeah,
[29:29] Speaker 6: it's gonna be a bandoned Drake Mallard retrieved.
[29:31] Speaker 1: By my dog.
[29:32] Speaker 6: Okay, my dog has retrieved like three or four of them,
[29:35] Speaker 6: But me personally, I've never shot one.
[29:38] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[29:39] Speaker 6: I've shot banded Canada geese, pintail teal, gadwall snow geese,
[29:46] Speaker 6: but never abandoned Drake Mallard.
[29:48] Speaker 2: Oh okay, I've only killed like five ducks in my life,
[29:50] Speaker 2: and I've killed one really really not bragging.
[29:56] Speaker 1: I've killed one banded bird. It was a speckle belly goose.
[29:59] Speaker 1: Yeah came in December.
[30:01] Speaker 6: But yeah, for the amount of mallards that I tend
[30:05] Speaker 6: to harvest, I'm just waiting on the day.
[30:07] Speaker 1: Where on the continent would you go to get that?
[30:10] Speaker 1: Because there's dudes who will, like, they know that this
[30:12] Speaker 1: refuge bands this time of year, so if they go there,
[30:15] Speaker 1: they can, you know, have higher odds. Where would you
[30:17] Speaker 1: try to do it at?
[30:18] Speaker 6: I mean, I know there's a lot of banding down
[30:21] Speaker 6: in Arkansas in the flooded timber, but I necessarily don't
[30:24] Speaker 6: want to.
[30:24] Speaker 1: Go somewhere where it's like you want to be organic.
[30:27] Speaker 6: Yeah, oh for sure. Like where we are around Bozman,
[30:32] Speaker 6: we see a lot of birds from Alberta, some Sasketchwan birds,
[30:36] Speaker 6: and they do a lot of banding up there, a
[30:37] Speaker 6: lot of banning projects. And one of these days Ruby's
[30:41] Speaker 6: gonna come back with something shiny on that orange leg.
[30:44] Speaker 6: So hopefully it's this year.
[30:46] Speaker 1: Maybe all right, last one Wally Bloomer, he says, Phil
[30:50] Speaker 1: Destiny too, Star Wars expansion question mark, I don't know
[30:54] Speaker 1: what that means. What's he asking, Phil?
[30:56] Speaker 7: Destiny two is a video game as a sequel to
[30:59] Speaker 7: the game Destiny. If you can put that together, it's
[31:02] Speaker 7: a it's a mult it's a multiplayer online shooter from
[31:04] Speaker 7: the same team who made the first three Halo games.
[31:07] Speaker 7: So bungeee based out of a bellv. Washington, and so
[31:11] Speaker 7: you know, it feels a lot like Halo feels great.
[31:13] Speaker 7: No one makes like the their art direction is unparalleled.
[31:16] Speaker 7: I put over fifteen hundred hours into this game. But
[31:19] Speaker 7: let's see, Wally Bloomer, I haven't touched Destiny since the
[31:22] Speaker 7: Final Shape, which which for everyone else was the last
[31:25] Speaker 7: big expansion downloadable content expansion. But I had I think
[31:31] Speaker 7: I said it before I had to quit Cold Turkey.
[31:32] Speaker 7: I was just wasting too much, too much time playing
[31:35] Speaker 7: that game, and I to be honest, Wally, I didn't
[31:39] Speaker 7: even know that there was a Star Wars tinged expansion
[31:43] Speaker 7: until I read this question. That is how checked out.
[31:45] Speaker 7: I am from the Destiny community, which didn't used to
[31:47] Speaker 7: be the case. But yeah, it's a so just for
[31:52] Speaker 7: fifteen more seconds of detail. The reason you waste so
[31:54] Speaker 7: much time playing these games is because it's a multi massive,
[31:58] Speaker 7: multiplayer online game. So you play with a bunch of people,
[32:00] Speaker 7: and it's like a looter shooter as well, so you're
[32:02] Speaker 7: always trying to make your number go up. You get
[32:04] Speaker 7: a gun, and then that gun helps you fight stronger monsters,
[32:06] Speaker 7: and then you get an even stronger gun, and that
[32:08] Speaker 7: gun helps you fight stronger monsters, and you watch your
[32:10] Speaker 7: number tick up, and it's just that sort of serotonin hip.
[32:13] Speaker 1: Just learning about the Star Wars make you more interested though,
[32:16] Speaker 1: or you still just know not at all.
[32:17] Speaker 4: No, I'm done, I'm done forever, Wally.
[32:19] Speaker 1: Sorry, all right, our next segment is Top threes.
[32:23] Speaker 2: I'm gonna fire this up.
[32:47] Speaker 4: That was not the right note.
[32:49] Speaker 1: All right, Each one of us had a different top
[32:52] Speaker 1: three list today. Corey, start us out. What is your
[32:55] Speaker 1: top three list?
[32:56] Speaker 2: Oh boy, Well, we're kind of wrapping up twenty twenty five,
[33:00] Speaker 2: not officially yet obviously, but it makes me always kind
[33:03] Speaker 2: of reminisced the year. So I'm doing, in no particular order,
[33:06] Speaker 2: necessarily my top three outdoor adventures. We'll see what Phil
[33:13] Speaker 2: brings up.
[33:13] Speaker 1: I can't wait to see to.
[33:14] Speaker 4: Get rid of this banner.
[33:17] Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, So in April, Corin and I went down
[33:20] Speaker 2: to West Texas to hunt add ad and had a
[33:24] Speaker 2: successful hunt, harvested you and a ram. But that was
[33:28] Speaker 2: like a blur just compared to the the adventure down
[33:31] Speaker 2: there Montana. Boy, this is only the second time I've
[33:34] Speaker 2: hunted in another state. First time I was just guiding,
[33:37] Speaker 2: so I hadn't where was that at Colorado?
[33:39] Speaker 1: Cool?
[33:40] Speaker 2: My first season guidance, So this just being invited was phenomenal.
[33:44] Speaker 2: And then being able to explore this super rugged, dry,
[33:48] Speaker 2: arid country of West Texas. We were staring into Mexico
[33:51] Speaker 2: the whole time. It was only in the seventies, but
[33:53] Speaker 2: it was so dry that it felt so much hotter.
[33:56] Speaker 1: Not a cloud in the sky, no shade to get under,
[33:59] Speaker 1: no shade.
[33:59] Speaker 2: The wind was really nasty, especially in that shot there
[34:03] Speaker 2: up on the side of a mountain. Got to eat
[34:07] Speaker 2: some odd ad fresh over the fire, which was pretty cool.
[34:09] Speaker 3: Just the whole.
[34:10] Speaker 2: Experience was awesome.
[34:11] Speaker 1: Where's that skull at now hanging in my house?
[34:13] Speaker 2: As soon as you walk up the.
[34:14] Speaker 6: Stairs, is that is that a bowl?
[34:16] Speaker 1: A buck ram? Right? Yeah?
[34:20] Speaker 6: I was trying to think of another one.
[34:21] Speaker 2: But yeah, they're more on the sheep side of things.
[34:24] Speaker 1: Cool.
[34:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, So that was good.
[34:26] Speaker 1: Adventure number three.
[34:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty awesome adventure. Let's see number two would have
[34:31] Speaker 2: been My wife and son and I did a lot
[34:35] Speaker 2: of camp floating. We like to take the driftboat down
[34:37] Speaker 2: onto one of our free stone rivers and camp on
[34:40] Speaker 2: public land, either on an island or off the off
[34:43] Speaker 2: a beach, just off the side of a of a river.
[34:45] Speaker 2: Typically we hit the Yellowstone River, which is a nice
[34:47] Speaker 2: short drive here from Bozeman, but love to take the
[34:51] Speaker 2: boat out for one or two days, one or two
[34:54] Speaker 2: nights if possible, and figure out what sort of adventures
[34:58] Speaker 2: we can go on. There's a shot and my kid
[34:59] Speaker 2: jumping off the front of the boat, super nonchalant. We
[35:02] Speaker 2: either go by ourselves or with another family. But it's fun.
[35:05] Speaker 2: Fish all day, pull into a beach wherever you want.
[35:08] Speaker 1: Bet you find some aggts in petrified wood.
[35:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, lots lots of petrified wood. I still don't quite
[35:13] Speaker 2: have the eye for it. But even though I have
[35:15] Speaker 2: found one of the biggest piece of the biggest bagg
[35:17] Speaker 2: I've ever seen.
[35:19] Speaker 6: You're multitasking in that photo.
[35:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, there I am rowing the boat with a boat
[35:23] Speaker 2: full of gear, firewood, a dog and two kids in
[35:26] Speaker 2: the front that were kicking splashing the water. Churning up
[35:30] Speaker 2: all the fish. But I didn't catch anything, but I
[35:33] Speaker 2: had to try.
[35:33] Speaker 6: Isn't that called the Sandwan shuffle?
[35:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's when they actually kick up the rocks.
[35:38] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[35:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, so close. So just the family float trips in
[35:43] Speaker 2: the summer, looking forward to that again.
[35:45] Speaker 1: Next, what does the San Juan shuffle?
[35:47] Speaker 6: It's basically like you walk and you're kicking up all
[35:51] Speaker 6: this dirt and I do know.
[35:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, like if you're fishing a hole, it's a beneficial thing. Yeah,
[35:56] Speaker 2: You're kicking up a lot of bugs higher up in
[35:59] Speaker 2: the stream and they come down and they can chum
[36:01] Speaker 2: up the fish if you will. It sometimes works, other
[36:04] Speaker 2: times I feel like any movement can cut the fish
[36:08] Speaker 2: down to Yeah, So I like that name.
[36:11] Speaker 1: I Uh, there's a driving maneuver I refer to as
[36:14] Speaker 1: the Chicago sweep. It's where you cross multiple lanes at once.
[36:17] Speaker 1: Say you're like four lanes and you gotta get from
[36:19] Speaker 1: lane one to that's been there, sure, Yeah, it's the
[36:22] Speaker 1: Chicago sweep. And I wondered one time, I was like,
[36:24] Speaker 1: did I come up with that or did I hear
[36:25] Speaker 1: someone say it? So I googled Chicago sweep and I
[36:28] Speaker 1: couldn't find it anywhere online, so maybe I made it up.
[36:31] Speaker 1: Let's let's make it a thing though, that is universe.
[36:34] Speaker 1: That's a Chicago sweep move that you most see, but.
[36:36] Speaker 6: You remember you might get pulled over doing it.
[36:38] Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, that's not in Chicago. That's like, you know,
[36:41] Speaker 1: that's that's driving up there. Pretty normal Chicago sweep multiple lanes.
[36:46] Speaker 2: Lanes, all right.
[36:46] Speaker 1: Number one Corey Adventure of twenty twenty five.
[36:49] Speaker 2: Number one took my wife and son to my favorite
[36:52] Speaker 2: place in the world. And I'm not going to tell
[36:53] Speaker 2: anybody where it's at. It's right on the edge of
[36:56] Speaker 2: a wilderness uh here in Montana, but really cool spot.
[37:02] Speaker 2: Took my son and my wife up there, went up
[37:05] Speaker 2: this tiny little creek to go look for some fish,
[37:08] Speaker 2: and lo and behold we caught a giant west slope cutthroat. Well, oh,
[37:12] Speaker 2: my boy caught that, which was really exciting. Just he
[37:15] Speaker 2: was finally old enough where I could take him on
[37:17] Speaker 2: the journey, which just getting there obviously is very difficult.
[37:21] Speaker 3: And he caught itentry.
[37:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, did you hook it and then hand him the rod?
[37:24] Speaker 1: Or he did everything?
[37:25] Speaker 2: No, he did everything?
[37:26] Speaker 1: Hell yeah yeah.
[37:27] Speaker 2: The dogfly yep, Catus. The dog got in the way.
[37:30] Speaker 2: Had to wrangle the dog and pull him out of
[37:32] Speaker 2: the way. But yeah, super fun, just super remote, hard
[37:36] Speaker 2: to get to spot, and I've been waiting since the
[37:37] Speaker 2: day he was born to take him back there.
[37:39] Speaker 1: So a fish that big on a dry fly would
[37:41] Speaker 1: spook me a little. It had to really spook Marshall.
[37:44] Speaker 2: Didn't want to You could see it. I want to
[37:46] Speaker 2: touch it in the photo. Yeah he's hesitant, but it's great. No,
[37:49] Speaker 2: super fun. That won't be the last time up there.
[37:51] Speaker 1: Good twenty five adventures for Corey. All right, Max, what's
[37:55] Speaker 1: your top three?
[37:55] Speaker 2: Oh?
[37:56] Speaker 6: I got top three duck hunting accessories. Yeah, for starters,
[38:02] Speaker 6: I'll start without start with these decoys. I'm a big
[38:05] Speaker 6: fan of a jerk rig. A jerk rig consists of
[38:11] Speaker 6: a weight mm hmm, a little bungee and a line
[38:15] Speaker 6: of decoys. So basically you can imagine I put this
[38:18] Speaker 6: weight out, I have this line come all the way
[38:22] Speaker 6: back to me, and it's exactly what I says, you
[38:24] Speaker 6: jerk it. It produces water motion. Water motion goes a
[38:29] Speaker 6: long ways. I would use this ten times more than
[38:35] Speaker 6: I would ever use a spinner. It's natural, ducks do it.
[38:38] Speaker 6: Ducks produce so much water motion that people overlook, and
[38:43] Speaker 6: especially if you're hunting like a pond or something, it's
[38:45] Speaker 6: super important to have some kind of water.
[38:47] Speaker 1: Only on a calm day. What if they were like,
[38:49] Speaker 1: you know, seven mile an hour wind and you had
[38:51] Speaker 1: some small waves.
[38:52] Speaker 6: It helps for sure because a lot of times too,
[38:55] Speaker 6: and people will do this in the South to hunting
[38:57] Speaker 6: the timber. They'll just rip on the jerk cord and
[39:00] Speaker 6: the splashing sound attracts ducks too, it helps. So yeah,
[39:06] Speaker 6: that's my number one. I bring this with me almost
[39:10] Speaker 6: every time I go duck hunt for sure. Number two
[39:14] Speaker 6: I think I have a photo.
[39:16] Speaker 1: Which one is it gonna be?
[39:17] Speaker 6: Oh game tote. I also brought this with me.
[39:21] Speaker 1: Too, A beautiful piece of gear.
[39:23] Speaker 6: Yeah, it's beautiful piece of gear. It helps you keep
[39:25] Speaker 6: your ducks in a row, funny, just easy hang hang
[39:33] Speaker 6: the duck by the foot or the head. And a
[39:36] Speaker 6: big reason why I like this is in waterfall hunting
[39:40] Speaker 6: you've got to keep your ducks separate, like you got
[39:42] Speaker 6: to claim your ducks, and it helps you keep you
[39:44] Speaker 6: keep keeps you legal. So like Corey and I went out,
[39:48] Speaker 6: Oh Corey would be this side, I would be this side.
[39:51] Speaker 6: So yeah, that's a thing I bring with me every
[39:54] Speaker 6: single time.
[39:55] Speaker 1: And a picture.
[39:56] Speaker 6: Yeah, it helps with good photos too. So yeah, that
[39:59] Speaker 6: was a couple of weeks ago limited Mallard, so very good. Yeah,
[40:05] Speaker 6: just you don't need it, but I like it.
[40:08] Speaker 1: What does that one run? You think?
[40:10] Speaker 6: This one's probably one hundred bucks.
[40:12] Speaker 1: It's going to have for the rest of your life.
[40:15] Speaker 6: Yeah, it's custom has Ruby's name on it.
[40:18] Speaker 1: Oh very good.
[40:18] Speaker 6: Yeah. So yeah, once Ruby goes, I'll retire this one
[40:22] Speaker 6: and then get another one for the next dog.
[40:25] Speaker 1: So all right. Number three waterfowl accessory Number three.
[40:28] Speaker 6: I kind of touched on this earlier. A neck gator.
[40:32] Speaker 6: This one's from First Light forty bucks. But like I
[40:36] Speaker 6: was saying earlier, keeps you warm, keeps the wind off you,
[40:40] Speaker 6: and also helps conceal you a little bit. So yeah,
[40:44] Speaker 6: every time there's it's cold out, I'm wearing this guy.
[40:47] Speaker 6: So get a little fleece in this side there. But yeah,
[40:51] Speaker 6: that's my top three.
[40:53] Speaker 1: And you don't realize how warm it's keeping you until
[40:55] Speaker 1: you might take it off.
[40:55] Speaker 6: Oh yeah, oh just just a little wind on the
[40:58] Speaker 6: neck is like brutals. Oh that's my top three.
[41:02] Speaker 1: All right, I'm going next I've got my top three
[41:04] Speaker 1: favorite fishing lures of all time. Phil has photos of them.
[41:08] Speaker 1: Number three is the Johnson beetle spin.
[41:12] Speaker 4: Nice.
[41:12] Speaker 1: This is my favorite lure in the world for catching panfish.
[41:15] Speaker 1: My best days of crappie fishing, bluegill fishing, or thanks
[41:18] Speaker 1: to a yellow beetle spin just like that one there,
[41:21] Speaker 1: easy to cast, rarely get snagged. You can run him
[41:24] Speaker 1: in any depth. One of the last remaining lures you
[41:26] Speaker 1: can buy that's under three dollars a piece. Non panfish
[41:31] Speaker 1: like them too. I've got some good bass on beetlespins.
[41:34] Speaker 1: One day in college, while I was fishing from my kayak,
[41:37] Speaker 1: I hooked into a giant flathead fishing for bluegill that
[41:40] Speaker 1: ate a beetle spin. I think he was probably like
[41:43] Speaker 1: twenty pounds. I fought him for like fifteen minutes on
[41:45] Speaker 1: my ultra light setup, got him to the edge of
[41:47] Speaker 1: the kayak a handful of times. Eventually he broke me
[41:50] Speaker 1: off on like my third attempt to grab him, and
[41:54] Speaker 1: he broke my heart. It would have been one of
[41:55] Speaker 1: my greatest catches of all time. A flathead on a
[41:58] Speaker 1: beetlespin from the kayak. Cool anyway, I love the Johnson Beetlespin.
[42:02] Speaker 1: So does the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. They named
[42:05] Speaker 1: it their number thirteen best lure of all time, but
[42:08] Speaker 1: for me, it's number three, the Johnson beatlespin.
[42:11] Speaker 6: I'm excited to see what what is two and one?
[42:13] Speaker 1: Number two is the rapaula shad rap. If I can
[42:17] Speaker 1: only fish with one crankbait the rest of my life,
[42:19] Speaker 1: it would be a number five shad rap in fire tiger,
[42:23] Speaker 1: just like that one there. It'll catch any game fish
[42:26] Speaker 1: fast while I pike. You can size it down for
[42:28] Speaker 1: panfish and trout, size it up for musky and stripers.
[42:31] Speaker 1: It's a real do it all lure. You control them.
[42:34] Speaker 1: You can cast and retrieve. Good for fishing five to
[42:37] Speaker 1: ten feet of water, which is where I find myself
[42:40] Speaker 1: most times. Also love the shad raps broken cousin the
[42:43] Speaker 1: jointed shad rap Those give even more wobble. They're not
[42:48] Speaker 1: quite as easy to tune as the og shad rap.
[42:51] Speaker 1: And I would bet that I own forty or fifty
[42:54] Speaker 1: of the jointed shad raps, and the shad raps all
[42:57] Speaker 1: on fire two not all on fire tiger. Just wanted
[42:59] Speaker 1: to make make sure I bet fire tigers. Is not
[43:02] Speaker 1: even top five because that's what I use so often
[43:04] Speaker 1: and lose so often. So it's my favorite. But I
[43:08] Speaker 1: think I have colors I've recognized that just should be
[43:12] Speaker 1: retired because I'm never gonna grab that purple blue thing
[43:15] Speaker 1: or whatever I have, all right. Number one is the
[43:18] Speaker 1: strike King KVD sexy Frog. Nothing in fishing brings me
[43:23] Speaker 1: greater joy than a top water bass bite. And although
[43:27] Speaker 1: I love like the scum frog and the zoom horny toad,
[43:30] Speaker 1: my absolute favorite is the KVD sexy frog. Kevin van
[43:34] Speaker 1: Dam He's the greatest bass angler ever. He's made my
[43:36] Speaker 1: favorite lure ever. The sexy frog is totally weedless. You
[43:40] Speaker 1: can cast that thing a mile. It has an internal rattle,
[43:42] Speaker 1: which not all frogs do, so it has some added sound,
[43:46] Speaker 1: great action. You can twitch it, you can do a
[43:47] Speaker 1: fast retrieve. They have seventeen colors. Now, I like the
[43:50] Speaker 1: classic leopard frog, which is what that pattern is because
[43:53] Speaker 1: most places I fish in the North, the most common
[43:56] Speaker 1: frog is a leopard frog. And here's a hot tip.
[43:59] Speaker 1: Take a scissors and and cut off like a half
[44:01] Speaker 1: inch of that houla skirt legs, and then also add
[44:04] Speaker 1: a trailer hook. You'll get better hook sets that way.
[44:07] Speaker 1: Throw it on a calm, cloudy day for best results.
[44:10] Speaker 1: That's the strike King KVD sexy frog my number one
[44:14] Speaker 1: favorite lure.
[44:15] Speaker 6: I feel like I was editing a Tony Peterson episode
[44:18] Speaker 6: one time, and I felt like he liked a calm
[44:22] Speaker 6: sunny day because it produces like a shadow sure up top.
[44:27] Speaker 1: I think you talk to ten anglers, I'll tell you
[44:29] Speaker 1: ten different things. I'd like cloud and calm. Then I've
[44:35] Speaker 1: got a few honorable mentioned. The eagle Claw croppie rig.
[44:39] Speaker 1: Croppie rigs get a bad rap for being like the
[44:42] Speaker 1: lure you associate with kids and beginner anglers, but that's stupid.
[44:46] Speaker 1: Everyone should embrace the croppy rig. They're cool. You bathe
[44:49] Speaker 1: them with worms or minnows to catch any fish in
[44:51] Speaker 1: North America. Fish it under a bobber, fish it on
[44:54] Speaker 1: the bottom, doesn't take any technique at all, and they're
[44:56] Speaker 1: the perfect lure for using while drinking a beer. So
[44:58] Speaker 1: that's a crappy rig. The Mister Twister curly tail they
[45:02] Speaker 1: make the o G curly tail grub. You won't find
[45:05] Speaker 1: anyone that'll tell you it's like the best soft plastic
[45:08] Speaker 1: for bass or walleye or anything. But just like as
[45:11] Speaker 1: an all around lure, you can't beat a mister Twister
[45:14] Speaker 1: good for panfish and game fish. Paired with the VMC jighead,
[45:18] Speaker 1: that's my favorite jig head. They'll catch anything. And then
[45:21] Speaker 1: the little Stinker dip bait worms. If you love catching
[45:24] Speaker 1: three pound channel cats in slow moving water, which I do,
[45:28] Speaker 1: then you can't beat stink bait. My favorite vessel for
[45:31] Speaker 1: Sonny's stink bait. That's my favorite stink bait is the
[45:34] Speaker 1: little Stinker dipworm. They make it real easy to set
[45:37] Speaker 1: the hook with that impregnated treble hook. I've caught more
[45:41] Speaker 1: catfish I think on that pairing of the little stinkers
[45:44] Speaker 1: worms and sunny stinkbait than anything else. Those are my
[45:47] Speaker 1: honorable mentions. Very cool, all right, Phil, what's your top three?
[45:51] Speaker 2: Okay?
[45:51] Speaker 7: Well, I ran into some technical difficulties this morning editing
[45:53] Speaker 7: a mediater podcast, so I had to pull a Ryan
[45:55] Speaker 7: Callahan and just look around my office. So, okay, we
[45:58] Speaker 7: have my top three tiki mugs that were in my office.
[46:02] Speaker 1: How many did you have in there?
[46:04] Speaker 7: Well, I've got like twenty, but I brought that. I
[46:06] Speaker 7: brought down five honorable mentions. The first one is this
[46:10] Speaker 7: Cohico mug that I got at Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco.
[46:15] Speaker 2: That's cool.
[46:15] Speaker 7: This is the mug that is pictured on the cover
[46:19] Speaker 7: of the Smuggler's Cove Tiki book, which is kind of
[46:22] Speaker 7: like the modern day Bible of tiki stuff. And it
[46:24] Speaker 7: it got a new matt and glaze and it just
[46:26] Speaker 7: it looks real, real pretty. It's a little little guys
[46:29] Speaker 7: covered in like barnacles and old old nets and and
[46:32] Speaker 7: some coral and stuff that used it in your office.
[46:36] Speaker 4: I don't use these.
[46:36] Speaker 7: If I sometimes i'll take I'll take one home on
[46:38] Speaker 7: the weekend if i'm if I feel like making a drink.
[46:41] Speaker 4: Okay, that's It's few and far between.
[46:42] Speaker 1: Right.
[46:43] Speaker 7: Number two is this one I actually found at an
[46:45] Speaker 7: antique store here in Bozeman, and so it does. It's
[46:47] Speaker 7: not that flashy, but I saw it and I was curious.
[46:51] Speaker 7: It's guy says Harvey's Lake Tahoe on it.
[46:52] Speaker 2: Cool.
[46:53] Speaker 7: So I looked it up and it was an old
[46:56] Speaker 7: tiki restaurant, tiki bar that was at the top of
[46:58] Speaker 7: a hotel in Aho that was very short lived and
[47:03] Speaker 7: apparently wasn't very good. But the hotel has a lot
[47:06] Speaker 7: of history because some guy who was in debt over
[47:08] Speaker 7: a million dollars at the casino put a bomb in
[47:10] Speaker 7: a copier and uh to try to extort the hotel,
[47:14] Speaker 7: and the FBI caught wind and detonated the bomb. Nobody
[47:19] Speaker 7: was hurt, but I mean it blew up, like the
[47:20] Speaker 7: first three stories of the hotel caused like twenty million
[47:23] Speaker 7: dollars in damages.
[47:25] Speaker 4: And here's here's here's a relic from from there.
[47:28] Speaker 1: Good stuff.
[47:29] Speaker 7: And then my favorite was one that I got at
[47:31] Speaker 7: a bar called Wusong Road in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just right
[47:34] Speaker 7: outside Harvard Square. And this is you've see if you've
[47:36] Speaker 7: seen the film Spirited Away. Uh, this is the the
[47:41] Speaker 7: the Radish spirit who works in the bathhouse. And I
[47:43] Speaker 7: just think it's a great I mean it's it's it's gorgeous,
[47:46] Speaker 7: wonderful design. He's wearing a little kind of like cherry
[47:49] Speaker 7: blossom Japanese shirt tiki shirt is his hat comes off
[47:55] Speaker 7: cookie and it's also just a really cool tiki tiki
[47:58] Speaker 7: bar as well. It's got kind of like this pulp
[47:59] Speaker 7: comic book theme, like it's it's got a hard hard
[48:02] Speaker 7: to describe, but it was a nice little a nice
[48:04] Speaker 7: little fine there and near it near Harvard.
[48:07] Speaker 1: Have you drank anything out of that tiki mug once?
[48:10] Speaker 7: Yeah, most of these tiki mugs I've had one drink
[48:12] Speaker 7: out of. And then I bring him to my office.
[48:14] Speaker 7: Uh and and then sometimes I'll bring him home for
[48:16] Speaker 7: a special occasion.
[48:17] Speaker 1: Okay, I thought you had a couple of honor.
[48:19] Speaker 4: I'll get some honorable mentions here too.
[48:20] Speaker 7: This one, this one is from Galaxy's Edge, the Oga's
[48:25] Speaker 7: Cantina in in Disney World and disney Land.
[48:28] Speaker 4: This is a sort of like classic.
[48:30] Speaker 7: It tells the story of the Battle of Endor and
[48:32] Speaker 7: kind of like a tribal artwork sort of thing, like
[48:35] Speaker 7: like as if it were designed by Ewoks. So you know,
[48:38] Speaker 7: you got the ats T there C three PO and
[48:40] Speaker 7: R two D two are somewhere around here. So's the
[48:43] Speaker 7: Ewoks just absolutely uh you know, doming some Stormtroopers.
[48:48] Speaker 4: That's a good one. And then I've got this.
[48:49] Speaker 2: Surprise that didn't make top three.
[48:52] Speaker 4: Oh so many to choose from.
[48:54] Speaker 6: More.
[48:54] Speaker 7: Yeah, and then I've got this one, which looks like
[48:55] Speaker 7: an arcade cabinet made out of like drift wood. That's
[48:59] Speaker 7: that was from Funhouse, which is like an old like
[49:01] Speaker 7: a video game comedy site that I used to enjoy
[49:05] Speaker 7: a lot.
[49:05] Speaker 3: Very unique.
[49:06] Speaker 1: Jealous of that collection. That is fun. If you're not
[49:09] Speaker 1: watching this on YouTube, you're missing out on a real
[49:11] Speaker 1: visual treat.
[49:12] Speaker 4: There, big Tail, there we are. Thank you.
[49:16] Speaker 1: All right joining us on the line. Last is Wired
[49:19] Speaker 1: to Hunt host Mark Kenyon. He's here with a top
[49:22] Speaker 1: five list of his own. Mark, Welcome to the show.
[49:26] Speaker 8: Hey guys, I'm just kind of in shock of Phil's collection.
[49:29] Speaker 8: There the quite the thing to try to follow up.
[49:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck, Hark makes Phil Phil real quick. Mark,
[49:37] Speaker 1: give us a dear movement update for where you're at
[49:40] Speaker 1: from Michigan these last thirty days of your dough season.
[49:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[49:43] Speaker 8: Well, we're coming off of a really great cold and
[49:46] Speaker 8: snowy spell for much of the country, really the late
[49:50] Speaker 8: season weather that you want. So we're coming off of
[49:53] Speaker 8: this high. Unfortunately at the very end of the year,
[49:55] Speaker 8: we're actually getting the opposite, which is a warm up,
[49:58] Speaker 8: which is not as encouraging. Warmer weather coming in here
[50:01] Speaker 8: into the Upper Midwest, some rain. We're going to miss
[50:04] Speaker 8: out on the white Christmas they thought we're going to have,
[50:07] Speaker 8: and all that's probably gonna lead to a little bit
[50:09] Speaker 8: slower deer movement than we've had over the last couple
[50:11] Speaker 8: of weeks during this kind of arctic spell, so not
[50:15] Speaker 8: exactly what you want. But with the warmer temperatures, you're
[50:17] Speaker 8: probably going to see deer moving off of the grains
[50:20] Speaker 8: like corn or soybeans and moving more towards greener forage,
[50:24] Speaker 8: native brows, green food plots, winter wheat fields, that kind
[50:28] Speaker 8: of stuff. So super fast update, but that's what's coming
[50:31] Speaker 8: down the line.
[50:32] Speaker 1: All right, good info. Now it's almost the off season,
[50:34] Speaker 1: and a great way to keep the fire burning for
[50:36] Speaker 1: deer in the off season is by reading. And I
[50:39] Speaker 1: don't know anyone who has read more books about white
[50:42] Speaker 1: tails than you. So today I want you to give
[50:44] Speaker 1: us your top five list of best books for white
[50:47] Speaker 1: tail hunters. Let's start with number five. What do you
[50:49] Speaker 1: have for us? Mark?
[50:52] Speaker 8: First off, I'd like to say that I plan on
[50:54] Speaker 8: using that bio line that I just saw below, Whitetail Enjoyer.
[50:58] Speaker 8: That's gonna be my new title.
[50:59] Speaker 3: Maybe not expert, but enjoyer pretty accurate.
[51:04] Speaker 8: Number one or because number five, in your case, will
[51:06] Speaker 8: be Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon. If you're watching here,
[51:10] Speaker 8: it is This is a foundational text within the whitetail
[51:14] Speaker 8: world from like a tactical perspective. This is basically the first,
[51:18] Speaker 8: and I think kind of that most established resource on
[51:23] Speaker 8: understanding topography and terrain for deer hunting. So how hills
[51:28] Speaker 8: and ridges and saddles and points and inside corners of
[51:32] Speaker 8: fields and all that kind of stuff can actually lead
[51:35] Speaker 8: to deer moving in different kind of ways, and how
[51:37] Speaker 8: you can take advantage of that as a hunter.
[51:39] Speaker 3: And this uses maps.
[51:40] Speaker 8: It really teaches how to use maps and topography to
[51:43] Speaker 8: predict deer movements. So really kind of foundational how to
[51:47] Speaker 8: book in the whitetail world.
[51:48] Speaker 1: It's got kind of a textbook look to it.
[51:51] Speaker 8: Yes, yes it does. There's lots of illustrations you can see,
[51:55] Speaker 8: like very helpful actual diagrams and stuff. So if you
[52:00] Speaker 8: trying to get better deer hunting, this is like a
[52:01] Speaker 8: must have book. It's hard to find though, I think
[52:04] Speaker 8: now is what I've heard.
[52:05] Speaker 1: Okay, that looks like one. If you're not interested in
[52:07] Speaker 1: a whole bunch of text and reading, you could just
[52:09] Speaker 1: flip through and enjoy the visuals and learn stuff that way,
[52:12] Speaker 1: all right. Number four mark number four.
[52:15] Speaker 8: This is for those of you who do want to
[52:17] Speaker 8: do a lot of reading. And this is not tactical
[52:20] Speaker 8: or strategic or how to it all. This is a
[52:22] Speaker 8: book called a Hunter's Heart, Honest Essays on blood Sport.
[52:27] Speaker 8: This is a collection of essays edited and collected by
[52:30] Speaker 8: David Peterson. This is going to be getting to the
[52:34] Speaker 8: why we hunt, not just deer, but anything and how
[52:38] Speaker 8: we go about it. So there are just some amazing
[52:41] Speaker 8: short essays in this collection that talk about white tails
[52:44] Speaker 8: and a whole bunch of other stuff and really gets
[52:46] Speaker 8: kind of into that deeper philosophical side of things. One
[52:50] Speaker 8: of the best hunting essays of all time, and my opinion,
[52:54] Speaker 8: is in here. It's called The Heart of the Game
[52:56] Speaker 8: by Thomas mcguain. It's a legendary piece, highly highly recommend
[53:01] Speaker 8: for all whitetail hunters and hunters of all kinds.
[53:04] Speaker 1: All right, now to the top three. What do you
[53:07] Speaker 1: have for us? Next?
[53:10] Speaker 8: Next is Whitetail Nation and this is by a guy
[53:12] Speaker 8: named Pete Bodo. This is an under the radar book.
[53:15] Speaker 8: I don't think a lot of people know about it.
[53:17] Speaker 8: It came out, I don't know, maybe fifteen twenty years ago,
[53:20] Speaker 8: and it's a really interesting story about this guy's kind
[53:25] Speaker 8: of exploration and journey as he went from kind of
[53:28] Speaker 8: being a standard everyday deer hunter to finally trying to
[53:33] Speaker 8: kill that first big buck.
[53:35] Speaker 3: Kind of the thing that you.
[53:36] Speaker 8: Read about over the whole course of your life is
[53:38] Speaker 8: someday getting that big trophy buck. Well, he decided to
[53:42] Speaker 8: document that journey as he went from kind of where
[53:45] Speaker 8: he was to going to that next level, and all
[53:47] Speaker 8: along the way travel across the country, was in hunting
[53:50] Speaker 8: in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Montana, and then through it
[53:54] Speaker 8: all really ends up doing a really interesting kind of
[53:57] Speaker 8: I don't know if it's an analysis, but he he
[54:00] Speaker 8: documents the culture of deer hunting. He documents the history
[54:03] Speaker 8: of deer hunting, and does it in a really compelling way.
[54:07] Speaker 3: This is like a real writer.
[54:08] Speaker 8: He wrote for Gray's Sporting Journal and The New York
[54:11] Speaker 8: Times and all that. So it's a really well articulated,
[54:13] Speaker 8: interesting story that has that kind of narrative nonfiction set
[54:18] Speaker 8: of lessons you can learn throughout too. So really good one.
[54:21] Speaker 8: Not a lot of people know about this one, but
[54:22] Speaker 8: I highly recommend it.
[54:23] Speaker 1: In a very pretty book mark, you seem like a
[54:26] Speaker 1: dust jacket guy, Do you always keep those on your books?
[54:30] Speaker 2: Oh?
[54:30] Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I couldn't.
[54:33] Speaker 8: My wife removes them. I kind of feel like that's sacrilege.
[54:35] Speaker 8: It's there's a lot of time and energy that goes
[54:38] Speaker 8: into designing these book covers and packaging the number right,
[54:42] Speaker 8: So I would never take that off.
[54:44] Speaker 1: I get rid of them right away. I feel like
[54:46] Speaker 1: I'm reading a book from the library if it has
[54:48] Speaker 1: the dust jest on it. Interesting, All right, Number two, Marcus,
[54:52] Speaker 1: what do you have?
[54:53] Speaker 8: Number two?
[54:54] Speaker 3: This is a tactics book.
[54:55] Speaker 1: This is a how to.
[54:56] Speaker 8: This is my favorite how to book. It's called Whitetail Access,
[55:00] Speaker 8: and it's a funny story. The title and the subtitle,
[55:03] Speaker 8: which is how to Hunt top white Tail States Cheaply
[55:06] Speaker 8: and Effectively. It's actually not really that kind of book.
[55:10] Speaker 8: It's a story that I heard from the author that
[55:13] Speaker 8: was kind of like, the publishers want to try to
[55:15] Speaker 8: make this seem more like a very clear how to book,
[55:18] Speaker 8: and so they packaged it with this title that they
[55:20] Speaker 8: thought would get people to buy it. But really what
[55:22] Speaker 8: it is is a story. It's the story of Chris
[55:25] Speaker 8: Eberhart's season in which he lived out of his minivan
[55:29] Speaker 8: traveling across the country hunting deer di y on the cheap,
[55:34] Speaker 8: from Michigan to North Dakota, Missouri, Ohio, maybe somewhere else.
[55:42] Speaker 8: But the Eberharts, Chris Eberhart and John Eberhart, his dad,
[55:46] Speaker 8: are kind of, you know, og whitetail hunters. They've really
[55:50] Speaker 8: unfortunately Chris passed away, which is really sad, but his
[55:53] Speaker 8: dad is still one of the legends in the whitetail world.
[55:56] Speaker 8: That's taught me and thousands of others a lot about
[55:58] Speaker 8: how to effectively hunt white tails and heavily pressured states.
[56:02] Speaker 8: And so this story is all about that season. But
[56:05] Speaker 8: then throughout it he's got very detailed notes about how
[56:09] Speaker 8: he did what he did, his strategies, his perspectives, his plans.
[56:14] Speaker 8: There's diagrams and maps in here again too, so kind
[56:16] Speaker 8: of similar to the other book. You can actually see
[56:18] Speaker 8: where his stand setups were and follow along with all
[56:21] Speaker 8: the hunts and the tactics. So are really good how
[56:25] Speaker 8: to mixed with a story. So that's why it's probably
[56:28] Speaker 8: my favorite recommendation for people who want to learn but
[56:30] Speaker 8: also enjoy the story along the way.
[56:32] Speaker 1: All right, here's a recap so far. Number five was
[56:34] Speaker 1: mapping white tail Bucks. Number four was a Hunter's Heart.
[56:38] Speaker 1: Number three, Whitetail Nation, number two, Whitetail Access. What is
[56:42] Speaker 1: number one?
[56:44] Speaker 8: It's kind of cliche. The number one book that all
[56:47] Speaker 8: whitetail hunters and every hunter in the world should read
[56:50] Speaker 8: is a Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. Probably anyone
[56:54] Speaker 8: listening to me or media radio live knows this book,
[56:57] Speaker 8: but if not, highly recommend it.
[56:59] Speaker 3: It is, I think, kind.
[57:01] Speaker 1: Of like the.
[57:03] Speaker 8: I don't know, like the equivalent of the Bible for
[57:05] Speaker 8: people who are into hunting and fish and wildlife and
[57:09] Speaker 8: conservation anything. It's like a foundational text. It's the thing
[57:12] Speaker 8: that kind of sums up how we can think about
[57:16] Speaker 8: ourselves as stewards, as wildlife managers. There's great essays in
[57:20] Speaker 8: here and thoughts on, you know, how to be a
[57:24] Speaker 8: hunter and connect with wildlife, wilderness, the importance of a
[57:27] Speaker 8: land ethic. You've heard it come up a thousand times
[57:30] Speaker 8: from Steve and Doug Dern and so many others, and
[57:33] Speaker 8: it's for good reason. The opening text here, the opening
[57:36] Speaker 8: line here is there are some who can live without
[57:39] Speaker 8: wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the
[57:42] Speaker 8: delights and dilemmas of one who cannot, And I think
[57:45] Speaker 8: that sums it up really well. If you care about wildlife,
[57:48] Speaker 8: wild things, this is a book that just has to
[57:51] Speaker 8: be on your bookshelf.
[57:52] Speaker 1: Okay, good stuff, Mark, thank you for the list. I'm
[57:55] Speaker 1: going to pick up some of those this off season.
[57:57] Speaker 1: I wrote them all down, and good luck on the
[58:00] Speaker 1: rest of your season there in Michigan. Thanks for joining us.
[58:02] Speaker 8: Thanks buddy, Chris, Yeah, Merry Christmas.
[58:05] Speaker 1: Tell family high right back at you all right. That
[58:10] Speaker 1: brings us to the end of the show. We have
[58:11] Speaker 1: some more Q and A to ramp this up. Here
[58:14] Speaker 1: are some questions listeners submitted last week. First one is
[58:18] Speaker 1: from Field of Dreams seven to three one. What types
[58:22] Speaker 1: of wine do y'all pair with wild game? I don't
[58:26] Speaker 1: have a great answer for this, but when I'm cooking
[58:28] Speaker 1: like a big meal for Thanksgiving or Christmas and it's
[58:31] Speaker 1: got courses in wild game, and my wife is really
[58:34] Speaker 1: trying to like put on the ritz, she will go
[58:36] Speaker 1: ask chat GPT. She'll tell it exactly what we're having
[58:39] Speaker 1: in what order, and what the meat is and where
[58:41] Speaker 1: it came from, and then that spits out some recommendations.
[58:44] Speaker 1: So that's the best thing I can tell you do.
[58:46] Speaker 1: You guys have any thoughts on wine and wild game,
[58:49] Speaker 1: red wind.
[58:54] Speaker 6: I'm not a big red wine or just not a
[58:56] Speaker 6: big wine guy in general.
[58:58] Speaker 2: So I married a Whino. My wife bums wine, whether
[59:01] Speaker 2: pairs or not, and she's got me hooked on Malbex,
[59:05] Speaker 2: which is an Argentinian wine, real dark, bold, fruity flavors,
[59:09] Speaker 2: which pairs very well with red meat especially, but I'm
[59:13] Speaker 2: a big fan of the boxed wine.
[59:15] Speaker 1: There you go, Phil, any input on wine and.
[59:20] Speaker 4: Meat, Yeah, I'm not a big I'm not a big
[59:22] Speaker 4: wine guy. I'm sorry.
[59:24] Speaker 1: If you're interested in beer pairings, we have two articles
[59:27] Speaker 1: on the medeater dot com for you. The first one
[59:29] Speaker 1: is from chef Justin Townsend how to Pair Beer with
[59:32] Speaker 1: wild Game, and then the other one is from Kooby
[59:34] Speaker 1: Brown how to Pair Beer with Fish. We can help
[59:38] Speaker 1: you out on that front. Again. For wine, I think
[59:41] Speaker 1: chat gpt does a really nice job if you tell
[59:44] Speaker 1: it exactly what you got going on. Yeah, We're we're
[59:47] Speaker 1: not wine here, I guess. The next question is c J.
[59:51] Speaker 1: Rope Key twenty one. What is the best wild game
[59:55] Speaker 1: Phil has eaten since working at Meat Eater.
[59:58] Speaker 2: Great question.
[59:59] Speaker 7: I think I've talked about this before, but the best
[1:00:01] Speaker 7: bite of wild game I've ever had was at the
[1:00:03] Speaker 7: Old Office probably five four years ago. Brody brought in
[1:00:09] Speaker 7: some elk tenderloin, and then Michael Hunter, who's the chef
[1:00:15] Speaker 7: at Antler in Toronto, Canada, who's been on the podcast
[1:00:18] Speaker 7: a couple of times and done some stuff with us,
[1:00:20] Speaker 7: he just had a little like induction burner and just
[1:00:25] Speaker 7: like seemingly without even thinking about it, just made it
[1:00:28] Speaker 7: like a Huckleberry demiglaze and cooked this elk just perfectly,
[1:00:33] Speaker 7: and it just like it felt like it melted in
[1:00:35] Speaker 7: my mouth. It was the best tasting me and I've
[1:00:37] Speaker 7: ever had mine.
[1:00:37] Speaker 1: We did not have much of a kitchen at the ogo.
[1:00:40] Speaker 4: Oh no, it was non existent.
[1:00:42] Speaker 1: Yeah. Jeremiah Donahue says, if you could ask Santa for
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: one piece of outdoor gear, what would it be, Corey.
[1:00:53] Speaker 2: Man, I've been on the hunt for a good waltint.
[1:00:56] Speaker 2: I'd love a Montana canvas Walton for shooting for the
[1:01:00] Speaker 2: stars here. Hard to fit under the tree, it is, Yeah,
[1:01:02] Speaker 2: well wrapped up maybe twelve by twelve Walton.
[1:01:06] Speaker 1: Okay, with with or without a floor? Without without a yeah, Okay,
[1:01:10] Speaker 1: they're always without a floor from Montana.
[1:01:12] Speaker 2: You can get them with floors yep, all right, with frame.
[1:01:15] Speaker 2: Maybe a stove too, since we're at.
[1:01:17] Speaker 6: It, Okay, yeah, tell Santa to look at Facebook marketplace. Yeah,
[1:01:21] Speaker 6: I've seen a lot of good sure, yep, okay. I
[1:01:23] Speaker 6: was so close to pulling the trigger, but I didn't.
[1:01:25] Speaker 2: I'll see Santa this weekend.
[1:01:27] Speaker 1: He's listening, Max. What are you asking Santa for?
[1:01:30] Speaker 6: Ooh, I got two ideas. More decoys yep, never have enough.
[1:01:37] Speaker 6: Or there's this duck plucker out there called the fall plucker.
[1:01:41] Speaker 6: Oh yeah, My thumbs are pretty strong, but they get
[1:01:44] Speaker 6: tired a little bit.
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: So how many ducks do you think you have to
[1:01:47] Speaker 1: kill a year to justify having one of those? They're
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: pretty spendy. Put a number on it, like fifty ducks
[1:01:52] Speaker 1: a year, two hundred ducks a year.
[1:01:55] Speaker 6: I don't know, I feel like you know, or like
[1:02:00] Speaker 6: for like guides and outfitters.
[1:02:02] Speaker 1: It'd be a no brain.
[1:02:03] Speaker 6: Yeah, for like a personal if you got a hunt
[1:02:06] Speaker 6: with a lot of friends, I would probably say, like
[1:02:07] Speaker 6: a couple of hundred, Oh wow, Yeah.
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: Do they have any other purpose?
[1:02:11] Speaker 5: Like?
[1:02:11] Speaker 1: Could could they function with a pheasant? No? No, I
[1:02:15] Speaker 1: mean not in my experience.
[1:02:18] Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know, but yeah, those are two things
[1:02:21] Speaker 6: that I would love. Is more decoys or duc Bucker. So, Santa,
[1:02:26] Speaker 6: if you're listening.
[1:02:29] Speaker 1: I'm good on gear, Santa. I just want permissions.
[1:02:31] Speaker 2: Just give me land.
[1:02:32] Speaker 6: Yeah, that's another good.
[1:02:33] Speaker 1: It's a lot of land, Santa. That's that's all I need.
[1:02:35] Speaker 2: That's really hard to put under the tree.
[1:02:38] Speaker 1: Deeds are pretty small call. Next question is from Will Sanchez.
[1:02:43] Speaker 1: He says favorite state for fossil slash rock hunting. Uh,
[1:02:47] Speaker 1: there are great rocks and fossils across the whole continent,
[1:02:50] Speaker 1: but the main thing is being legal. Will, So, b
[1:02:53] Speaker 1: LM has the loosest restrictions when it comes to where
[1:02:57] Speaker 1: you can collect, what you can collect. How you collect
[1:02:59] Speaker 1: this fall is you know, picking up a shovel and
[1:03:01] Speaker 1: digging a hole. So any state that has a lot
[1:03:04] Speaker 1: of BLM land, which is you know, mostly in the West, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming,
[1:03:10] Speaker 1: those are my favorite states for fossil and rock hunting,
[1:03:13] Speaker 1: just because you can do it legally. The next one
[1:03:16] Speaker 1: is from Doug Chiasen. Are there any hunting video games?
[1:03:21] Speaker 1: Phil likes?
[1:03:23] Speaker 7: The short answer is no, and that's not because I
[1:03:26] Speaker 7: don't think they exist. I just haven't really tried a
[1:03:28] Speaker 7: whole lot. I've tried the Hunter Call of the Wild,
[1:03:31] Speaker 7: which I think is probably the biggest one. Maybe people
[1:03:33] Speaker 7: might yell at me for that, but they've been making
[1:03:35] Speaker 7: putting out expansion packs for that game for years now.
[1:03:38] Speaker 7: And I played it for like about an hour and
[1:03:40] Speaker 7: a half a year or two ago, and I just
[1:03:43] Speaker 7: couldn't get into it. Seemed like there are a lot
[1:03:44] Speaker 7: of systems that I just needed to get familiar with,
[1:03:46] Speaker 7: so it was kind of like a steep a steep
[1:03:48] Speaker 7: learning curve. But there is a game coming out called
[1:03:52] Speaker 7: Cast and Chill, which came out on Steam, which is
[1:03:56] Speaker 7: like a PC marketplace, a few months ago, but it's
[1:03:59] Speaker 7: as of the it's coming out on the Nintendo Switch
[1:04:01] Speaker 7: to tomorrow, and I put it on just a couple
[1:04:04] Speaker 7: of days ago, and it looks fun. It just seems
[1:04:07] Speaker 7: like a very laid back, kind of gorgeous looking like
[1:04:10] Speaker 7: pixel art fishing game, but it looks pretty dense like
[1:04:13] Speaker 7: you can go to it. There's a whole ton of
[1:04:15] Speaker 7: fish did different bait to do, different seasons and stuff.
[1:04:18] Speaker 4: So I'm excited to try to Maybe I'll stream it,
[1:04:20] Speaker 4: maybe I'll stream it.
[1:04:21] Speaker 1: He's going to play it over Christmas break.
[1:04:23] Speaker 4: I will.
[1:04:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, someone in a future live chat needs to ask
[1:04:26] Speaker 1: Phil for his review so we can all find out together.
[1:04:29] Speaker 7: And let me know if there are any hunting games
[1:04:30] Speaker 7: that I should I should get into. I don't want
[1:04:32] Speaker 7: anything too realistic, like if it's kind of like an
[1:04:35] Speaker 7: Arcadi element to it, like that's more fun than than
[1:04:38] Speaker 7: hardcore realism to me.
[1:04:39] Speaker 1: Another video game question for Phil, this is from fro Alex.
[1:04:43] Speaker 1: Ask Phil if he ever played RuneScape back in the
[1:04:46] Speaker 1: day or he still plays.
[1:04:49] Speaker 4: I did play RuneScape.
[1:04:50] Speaker 7: Speaking of MMOs that we talked about with Destiny, this
[1:04:53] Speaker 7: was a massive multiplayer online so it's like a big
[1:04:56] Speaker 7: you know, you get on a server and there's thousands
[1:05:00] Speaker 7: of people that are all in the same playing in
[1:05:01] Speaker 7: the same area, and you can you know, squad up
[1:05:04] Speaker 7: and take on dungeons and fight, you know, go on
[1:05:06] Speaker 7: quests and stuff. RuneScape was on was one of the ogs.
[1:05:10] Speaker 7: I played it a little bit. That was my brother
[1:05:12] Speaker 7: was way more into it than me. My big MMO
[1:05:15] Speaker 7: was It's called Ragnarok Online, which was a two D
[1:05:18] Speaker 7: pixel art one. But then I also played a World
[1:05:21] Speaker 7: of Warcraft, a lot back.
[1:05:23] Speaker 4: I was.
[1:05:23] Speaker 7: I was playing Wow from the ground floor like two
[1:05:26] Speaker 7: thousand and four, I right right when it launched.
[1:05:28] Speaker 1: Do people still play RuneScape?
[1:05:30] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's got a very active community.
[1:05:32] Speaker 7: I but again, that's like a blind spot form we
[1:05:34] Speaker 7: be because once you have kids in a job, MMOs
[1:05:37] Speaker 7: aren't the healthiest thing for you or your family, which
[1:05:41] Speaker 7: is why I stopped playing Destiny.
[1:05:43] Speaker 1: Last question today is from Casey Jacobsen twenty three. What's
[1:05:47] Speaker 1: your plan when out of state deer hunting in previously
[1:05:51] Speaker 1: unexplored areas. I'll answer that on behalf of deer, and
[1:05:54] Speaker 1: then Max is going to answer about waterfowl and Corey
[1:05:57] Speaker 1: for elk. My plan went hunting in an unexplored place
[1:06:01] Speaker 1: for deer. The first thing I'll look for is food,
[1:06:05] Speaker 1: and that doesn't matter if I'm hunting in Idaho in
[1:06:09] Speaker 1: October or Illinois in December, which is you know my
[1:06:13] Speaker 1: spectrum this year. That was my first hunt, my last hunt.
[1:06:16] Speaker 1: That's the easiest thing I can find on on X,
[1:06:19] Speaker 1: and then when I'm there in person, I can work
[1:06:21] Speaker 1: my way backwards. If this is where the deer are feeding,
[1:06:24] Speaker 1: it's very easy to you know, put together where they're
[1:06:27] Speaker 1: probably betting at and traveling to get from point A
[1:06:30] Speaker 1: to point B. So look look for food for me
[1:06:33] Speaker 1: A lot of times that is probably big agriculture. I
[1:06:36] Speaker 1: spend most of my time hunting between the rocky mountains
[1:06:39] Speaker 1: and the Mississippi River, so I care about where the
[1:06:42] Speaker 1: alf alfa is, where the cornfields are, what point in
[1:06:45] Speaker 1: the harvest it is, and if there's no egg around,
[1:06:47] Speaker 1: what acorn trees there might be. On X does a
[1:06:50] Speaker 1: great job of allowing you to sort by the crop
[1:06:53] Speaker 1: coverage that you can see if was was this field
[1:06:56] Speaker 1: last year? Corn? Was it alfalfa? Was it hey? Was
[1:06:59] Speaker 1: it sorghum? So so starting there thinking about what deer
[1:07:02] Speaker 1: would like in that area, that that'll give you a
[1:07:05] Speaker 1: big piece of the puzzle. Ma's answer for waterfowl, well.
[1:07:10] Speaker 6: I'm gonna kind of go the opposite of you. My
[1:07:13] Speaker 6: first thing is water, not only the lakes, river streams,
[1:07:21] Speaker 6: but I have a big obsession with keeping up with
[1:07:27] Speaker 6: current weather and rain forecast. So there's different areas that
[1:07:31] Speaker 6: get a bunch of rain and two months later that
[1:07:36] Speaker 6: rain is still gonna almost be there.
[1:07:39] Speaker 1: As in forms of.
[1:07:40] Speaker 6: Flooded fields, flooded agriculture, you name it. So there was
[1:07:44] Speaker 6: this spot that I went up to Saskatchewan this last
[1:07:48] Speaker 6: September where they got eight inches of the rain a
[1:07:52] Speaker 6: month ago before. I hunted and I went there, put
[1:07:55] Speaker 6: a pin on the map and I went there and
[1:07:58] Speaker 6: there was just so many dogs.
[1:08:00] Speaker 1: And you can diy waterfall in Saskatchewan. Yeah, soun's a bitches.
[1:08:03] Speaker 1: Need to let deer hunters do. Make you have a
[1:08:05] Speaker 1: guide or a buddy or whatever. Yeah.
[1:08:07] Speaker 6: So I went up there and hunted flooded fields for
[1:08:11] Speaker 6: three days and it was just incredible.
[1:08:13] Speaker 1: So yeah, look for water.
[1:08:16] Speaker 6: And then another big thing too, is like if I
[1:08:19] Speaker 6: if I'm going to a general area, I will go
[1:08:21] Speaker 6: and make a list of landowners names and phone numbers
[1:08:26] Speaker 6: in case there's ducks there there, in case there's waterfall there,
[1:08:30] Speaker 6: feeding in their fields or just using their water, because
[1:08:34] Speaker 6: it's going to be a lot easier to just already
[1:08:37] Speaker 6: have their names and phone numbers already on a list
[1:08:40] Speaker 6: then spending the time looking it up, Oh there's their
[1:08:42] Speaker 6: house kind of thing. So I do all that stuff
[1:08:45] Speaker 6: and ahead of time.
[1:08:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think to piggyback off that. Going back to deer,
[1:08:49] Speaker 1: I think it's really important to have a plan. A. B. C.
[1:08:51] Speaker 1: D E f G. A lot of times I go
[1:08:54] Speaker 1: in thinking that it's going to happen for me at
[1:08:56] Speaker 1: plan A or B, and it ends up being like
[1:08:58] Speaker 1: my fifth or sixth option where I actually, you know,
[1:09:01] Speaker 1: find the deer that I that I want. I want
[1:09:03] Speaker 1: to hunt all right, Corey previously unexplored areas. When it
[1:09:07] Speaker 1: comes to elk, what are you looking for?
[1:09:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, for elk, I mean time, like length, the time
[1:09:12] Speaker 2: of your hunt is everything. So if you can add
[1:09:15] Speaker 2: any time to actually physically scouting. E scouting is great,
[1:09:20] Speaker 2: but you're never going to know exactly what the country's like,
[1:09:22] Speaker 2: how long it takes you to get to a spot
[1:09:24] Speaker 2: unless you're physically on the ground. So if you can
[1:09:26] Speaker 2: add a couple of days, whether it's like opening day
[1:09:29] Speaker 2: or you got a you know, weekend, even that you're
[1:09:31] Speaker 2: just hunting a new area, if you can get out
[1:09:34] Speaker 2: there in the summer late fall or early fall late
[1:09:37] Speaker 2: summer and get boots on the ground and physically see
[1:09:40] Speaker 2: the country, you're going to just have a massive leg
[1:09:42] Speaker 2: up when you're when you discover elk in that part
[1:09:46] Speaker 2: of the world, and elk are going to be everywhere
[1:09:48] Speaker 2: right like they need the same things deer need and ducks.
[1:09:52] Speaker 2: But then they're going to be everywhere on top like
[1:09:55] Speaker 2: they're everywhere and they're nowhere at the same time. So
[1:09:57] Speaker 2: you can either stick to one spot and hopefully they'll
[1:09:59] Speaker 2: move in, or keep roaming around. But adding just a
[1:10:03] Speaker 2: day if you can, or a couple of days to
[1:10:05] Speaker 2: your you know, days that you're committed to hunting is massive,
[1:10:09] Speaker 2: just to see the country, get a feel for it,
[1:10:12] Speaker 2: and then if it, you know, doesn't work out in
[1:10:14] Speaker 2: your mind as to how good it's going to be,
[1:10:16] Speaker 2: then you can go to Plan B and move on
[1:10:17] Speaker 2: to the next spot.
[1:10:18] Speaker 1: So good advice.
[1:10:19] Speaker 2: Add some time, all right.
[1:10:20] Speaker 1: That brings us to the end of this episode. We
[1:10:22] Speaker 1: have another pre recorded episode of Radio Live next week,
[1:10:26] Speaker 1: but then it's back to our regularly scheduled programming after that.
[1:10:31] Speaker 1: Thank you for listening, Happy holidays, Merry Christmas. We'll see
[1:10:35] Speaker 1: you in twenty twenty six. By now,
