[1:00] Speaker 4: Today, we've got a couple interviews. We've got one about
[1:04] Speaker 4: road kill be getting more road killed. It's pretty cool
[1:07] Speaker 4: story out of Wyoming. And we're also going to talk
[1:10] Speaker 4: about what's at stake if the roadless rule on forty
[1:13] Speaker 4: five millionacres forty eight millionacres of your national force is rescinded.
[1:21] Speaker 4: And since it's prime time for all the archery out
[1:23] Speaker 4: hunters out there, we've got a rout report from some
[1:26] Speaker 4: hunters who are out in the field.
[1:28] Speaker 3: And finally we're gonna lay down.
[1:30] Speaker 4: Some harsh truths and we'll check in with the crew
[1:33] Speaker 4: at our newest media to retail location in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
[1:39] Speaker 4: Sounds funy, but first I've been I got an order
[1:45] Speaker 4: from on High to make an announcement, the announcement everyone's.
[1:49] Speaker 3: Been waiting for.
[1:51] Speaker 4: In December, you can join Steve, Joannis, Clay Brent, and
[1:56] Speaker 4: our own doctor of History Rand Here for a night
[2:01] Speaker 4: of laugh, news, opinions, and free prizes on the Mediator

[2:13] Speaker 4: and Austin. And you can get details at the mediat
[2:16] Speaker 4: dot com backslash tour uh and and find out the
[2:20] Speaker 4: dates and the venues and all that stuff.
[2:23] Speaker 1: Randa Williams is going to do the entire tour and
[2:26] Speaker 1: a cousin Eddie bathrobe all on Christmas vacation. So there's
[2:30] Speaker 1: gonna be all sorts of fun Christmas hijinks. You don't
[2:34] Speaker 1: even know, you're crazy.
[2:36] Speaker 5: I've been practicing all of my carols, even the weird
[2:39] Speaker 5: ones that no one likes to sing.
[2:41] Speaker 3: You're gonna break out your Santa suit.
[2:43] Speaker 5: I'd like to I'd like to actually use this opportunity
[2:45] Speaker 5: to invest in a real Santa suit at this company. Well,
[2:49] Speaker 5: I feel like we have the Yeah no, but hark
[2:53] Speaker 5: the Herald Angels sing. We're just going to get into
[2:56] Speaker 5: the the deep cuts.
[2:58] Speaker 4: Going south, which is a new, new kind of part
[3:01] Speaker 4: of the country that I hit on the tours before.
[3:03] Speaker 5: I'm excited.
[3:05] Speaker 4: People were riping for a long time, so we listened
[3:07] Speaker 4: to them. Guys, are starting to feel like fall around here.
[3:11] Speaker 6: Man.
[3:11] Speaker 4: The leaves are starting to show some color, Temperatures are
[3:14] Speaker 4: cool enough, days are getting shorter.
[3:16] Speaker 3: It's hunting season. I've been out for grouse a couple
[3:20] Speaker 3: of times with my boys.
[3:23] Speaker 4: Done all right, But my first big hunt is going
[3:27] Speaker 4: to be antelope season here in like what three weeks
[3:29] Speaker 4: something like that.
[3:30] Speaker 3: We've got four tags.
[3:32] Speaker 4: It's gonna be crazy trying to fill four tags. What's
[3:36] Speaker 4: your big, first big hunt of the year, Randall.
[3:39] Speaker 5: Well, I actually got out this past weekend and we
[3:43] Speaker 5: were in some areas of Montana. We have an early rifle. Yeah, yeah,
[3:48] Speaker 5: So I went in with a buddy and we camped
[3:51] Speaker 5: together one night and then split up and kind of
[3:53] Speaker 5: looped back to the truck.
[3:54] Speaker 3: Elk or deer?
[3:55] Speaker 5: What were you after both? Elk? If it's the very
[4:00] Speaker 5: right opportunity because the logistics are difficult. But saw elk
[4:05] Speaker 5: saw a lot of deer. Actually, I was surprised and
[4:08] Speaker 5: just didn't. Yeah, but amazing to get out and amazing
[4:15] Speaker 5: to uh, you know, discover that the studs in your
[4:20] Speaker 5: binocular tripod adapter or loose, or that there's a hole
[4:25] Speaker 5: in your tense rain fly. Yeah, shaking it all out
[4:29] Speaker 5: before the weather gets dangerously cold.
[4:32] Speaker 4: It's a pretty pretty unique opportunity to carry a rifle
[4:35] Speaker 4: around for deer and no super.
[4:36] Speaker 5: Cool, super cool and yeah, like just gorgeous country. We
[4:40] Speaker 5: didn't we saw people, but we didn't talk to anybody
[4:43] Speaker 5: for four days and nice, saw some moose, saw some goats.
[4:47] Speaker 4: Cool, cal You're doing a pretty crazy hunt. Did the
[4:54] Speaker 4: company take out a life insurance policy on you before
[4:57] Speaker 4: this traditional bow round bear hunt?
[5:00] Speaker 1: Well I never thought about that, but knowing some of
[5:02] Speaker 1: the folks around here, like like I do, uh yeah,
[5:05] Speaker 1: probably probably there's there's some Vegas style Yeah, that's being
[5:10] Speaker 1: placed for sure.
[5:11] Speaker 7: Our friends.
[5:12] Speaker 3: It's fan duel first big hunt. Yeah, yeah it is.
[5:15] Speaker 1: I mean because that's a long hunt and then.
[5:20] Speaker 3: People a little about it real quick.
[5:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's out on the Alaska peninsula and it's brown
[5:25] Speaker 1: bear and I'll be using my bow, which if you're
[5:30] Speaker 1: going to try to get a brown bear with the bow,
[5:32] Speaker 1: the fall time is up close and personal time because
[5:36] Speaker 1: they're in there on the salmon streams and the water's
[5:38] Speaker 1: rushing and stuff, and it's always windy out on the peninsula.
[5:42] Speaker 5: So it's good.
[5:42] Speaker 1: Spot in stock conditions, provided it's not too nasty, and
[5:48] Speaker 1: so you know, the the deck is as stacked in
[5:51] Speaker 1: your favor as it can be for just getting in tight.
[5:55] Speaker 3: Are you are you camping on the island? Are you?
[5:58] Speaker 3: Are you doing the boat or how's it gonna work?
[6:01] Speaker 1: Well, we're not into the islands, we're not on the ills.
[6:05] Speaker 3: That's right, You're on the keen eye.
[6:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And it's still TBD as far as because
[6:14] Speaker 1: you know, they're just they're flying in and out there
[6:16] Speaker 1: all the time right now. So it's we're gonna figure
[6:20] Speaker 1: out the best spot to be yep and and be there.
[6:23] Speaker 1: And I'm going up a couple of days before the
[6:25] Speaker 1: season starts, and hopefully I have all those little kinks
[6:32] Speaker 1: that Randall just gave me a little bit of anxiety
[6:34] Speaker 1: with ironed out before it's it's sneaking up on Bear's time.
[6:39] Speaker 5: I'm gonna give you a little insider tip. Check your
[6:42] Speaker 5: air mattress for any slow leaks. The old hips are
[6:47] Speaker 5: a little sore.
[6:48] Speaker 3: Yeah, we got to carry tenacious tape with you, man.
[6:51] Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, I I uh. This is like the
[6:54] Speaker 5: first time in a long time. I was certain that
[6:56] Speaker 5: I had my my whole repair kit with me, but
[6:59] Speaker 5: for what I reason, it didn't make it in the backpack.
[7:01] Speaker 5: So it's a useful reminder. Yeah, but yeah, the hips
[7:05] Speaker 5: are sore. Started having to dig out my little hip
[7:08] Speaker 5: hole under my tent before I go to sleep.
[7:11] Speaker 4: That's a bummer when you wake up and those things
[7:13] Speaker 4: are just deflated.
[7:14] Speaker 5: It's also a bummer when it's it's been solid. I
[7:17] Speaker 5: bought it used like five years ago, patched it one
[7:20] Speaker 5: time since, and I've never had an issue. Headed out
[7:22] Speaker 5: in Yellowstone last month, no issues. I don't know really
[7:25] Speaker 5: what happened.
[7:25] Speaker 3: So and then five years you got your money's worth.
[7:28] Speaker 5: Out of it. Yeah, but I don't want to buy
[7:30] Speaker 5: a new one. Have you seen the prices these days?
[7:33] Speaker 1: They are ghastly. But the flip side of this, right,
[7:37] Speaker 1: and this is the covey of signing up for a
[7:41] Speaker 1: big hunt. Is I have not done. This is the
[7:46] Speaker 1: furthest I have ever in my entire life been into
[7:50] Speaker 1: any legal hunting season without hunting a single day. Like
[7:54] Speaker 1: I've just got all this other stuff I have got
[7:57] Speaker 1: to get done, and rap.
[7:58] Speaker 4: Much going on in the world of conservation and public lands.
[8:02] Speaker 4: Cal is too busy.
[8:03] Speaker 3: He no longer hunts.
[8:04] Speaker 1: That is a real reality. That is just like so easy.
[8:11] Speaker 1: Is right there?
[8:12] Speaker 3: Yep, it's right there.
[8:14] Speaker 1: And I've spent my entire life fighting against that type
[8:16] Speaker 1: of reality.
[8:17] Speaker 3: So start fighting for Cal so he can go hunt.
[8:20] Speaker 5: Geez, come on, I've got to lead on some sandhill cranes.
[8:23] Speaker 5: Oh lovely from the neighbor. So excellent. I've got plans
[8:27] Speaker 5: this weekend if you want to join.
[8:28] Speaker 4: All right, we talked about bears a little bit. We're
[8:31] Speaker 4: going to talk about bears some more in our first interview.
[8:35] Speaker 4: Our first guest today is Brian DeBolt. Brian works out
[8:39] Speaker 4: of Lander, Wyoming for the Wyoming Fish and Game Department
[8:43] Speaker 4: as a large corn of carnivore conflict coordinator. And the
[8:49] Speaker 4: reason I came across Brian is I read an article
[8:53] Speaker 4: just in the last couple of days about multiple black
[8:58] Speaker 4: bears that were killed by vehicles at the same location
[9:01] Speaker 4: over the course of a day or two, I think
[9:03] Speaker 4: and decide to follow up with Brian and let him
[9:07] Speaker 4: explain to us about why it happened.
[9:10] Speaker 3: We got Brian on here. He is, Yes, how's it going, Brian?
[9:15] Speaker 6: Good? Hi guys, how are you good?
[9:17] Speaker 3: Good?
[9:17] Speaker 5: Good to meet you.
[9:19] Speaker 3: Thanks for you, thanks for joining us.
[9:21] Speaker 4: Before we get into this chain reaction roadkill story, can
[9:26] Speaker 4: you give us just a little background on what you
[9:28] Speaker 4: do for Wyoming fishing game.
[9:31] Speaker 8: So, yeah, you read my title. It's a little lengthy.
[9:35] Speaker 8: Large carnivore conflict coordinator.
[9:38] Speaker 1: So you set up the fights.
[9:43] Speaker 8: Well, I try to referee him anything. So the large
[9:49] Speaker 8: carnivores in Wyoming that we deal with our black bears,
[9:53] Speaker 8: grizzly bears, mountain lions, and wolves, and whenever they come
[9:57] Speaker 8: into conflict with people is my role. Whether it's a
[10:04] Speaker 8: bear tip and over a garbage can, bear killing livestock,
[10:10] Speaker 8: you know, wolve's killing livestock, or you know, oftentimes hunters encounterbears,
[10:20] Speaker 8: you know, and shoot a bear and self defense or
[10:24] Speaker 8: maybe even a human gets injured or killed. Unfortunately, that's
[10:29] Speaker 8: my job.
[10:30] Speaker 4: I imagine you got to have a like a pretty cool
[10:33] Speaker 4: demeanor for that job, because on the one hand, you're
[10:36] Speaker 4: like looking out for people and livestock and things like that,
[10:40] Speaker 4: but you also need to like kind of keep an
[10:44] Speaker 4: eye out for the best interests of these these predator
[10:48] Speaker 4: species as well.
[10:50] Speaker 6: Well. It's uh, yeah, cool, I've never been turned.
[10:56] Speaker 8: It is an interesting dynamic and often the the people
[10:59] Speaker 8: are sometimes more difficult to deal with. You don't say
[11:03] Speaker 8: yeah as you know, so it's it's interesting, yeah, And
[11:08] Speaker 8: you can't you can't judge people beforehand by any means.
[11:13] Speaker 8: I mean, you could run into a kind of a rough,
[11:17] Speaker 8: kind of redneck, old looking fella and there's none.
[11:21] Speaker 3: Of them in Wyoming, come on.
[11:23] Speaker 8: But they they want to do everything they can to
[11:26] Speaker 8: make sure that the bear's okay, that we don't hurt it,
[11:29] Speaker 8: that we don't don't have to remove it, you know,
[11:31] Speaker 8: lethally kill it or anything. And then next door there's
[11:34] Speaker 8: a you know, in that elderly lady or something in
[11:37] Speaker 8: her nightgown, and she wants to make sure that bears
[11:40] Speaker 8: as dead as can be.
[11:41] Speaker 1: So because it tackle their bird feeder for the fifth time,
[11:44] Speaker 1: why can't that bear learn?
[11:46] Speaker 8: So you just never know it is it's an interesting
[11:50] Speaker 8: dynamic to yeah, be in the middle.
[11:52] Speaker 1: It'd be helpful if everybody had some pointy years on
[11:55] Speaker 1: both sides of their head that either stand up or
[11:58] Speaker 1: lay down.
[12:00] Speaker 6: Yeah, that we could tell a little better behavior.
[12:05] Speaker 4: So with that in mind, with what you're out there
[12:08] Speaker 4: doing every day, I gotta imagine this time of year,
[12:14] Speaker 4: bears especially like very actively trying to put on as.
[12:17] Speaker 3: Much weight as possible.
[12:20] Speaker 4: It's it's got to be very busy for you in
[12:22] Speaker 4: the conflict department, probably your busiest time of year.
[12:26] Speaker 8: It's extremely busy, and this year is no exception. Yeah,
[12:31] Speaker 8: bears are in what we call hyperphasia, just like you mentioned,
[12:35] Speaker 8: trying to gain as many calories as possible before they
[12:39] Speaker 8: go into the danding period. And so they are forging longer,
[12:43] Speaker 8: they're active longer, and with anything they can possibly put
[12:49] Speaker 8: into their gut, you know, whether it's natural or unnatural foods,
[12:54] Speaker 8: And by unnatural I mean yeah, like bird feeders and
[12:59] Speaker 8: food and and that type of stuff garbage. So, yeah,
[13:02] Speaker 8: we are extremely busy right now.
[13:06] Speaker 4: Well let's let's I'll tie that into what happened a
[13:09] Speaker 4: couple of weeks ago. Can can you just tell us,
[13:12] Speaker 4: like initially what happened, and then we'll get into why
[13:15] Speaker 4: after you kind of let us let us know what happened,
[13:18] Speaker 4: and if you want, like you can tell us where
[13:21] Speaker 4: this happened to.
[13:23] Speaker 8: Okay, so real Briefly, there's a highway goes over what's
[13:28] Speaker 8: called South Pass.
[13:29] Speaker 3: Very famous place. Well yeah, among certain circles.
[13:34] Speaker 8: It's a south south pass of the Oregon Trail and
[13:37] Speaker 8: different things over the south end of the wind River
[13:40] Speaker 8: mountains here and had lots of wildlife up there. But again,
[13:47] Speaker 8: long story short, and elk was struck and killed by
[13:49] Speaker 8: a vehicle, and in short order, within a matter of
[13:55] Speaker 8: a few days later, a sow with two what we
[14:01] Speaker 8: call cubs of the year they're were born this year,
[14:06] Speaker 8: were struck and killed right at that roadkill elk they were, Yeah,
[14:12] Speaker 8: all three struck at the same time. And lots of
[14:16] Speaker 8: traffic again on this highway, it's a pretty major thoroughfare.
[14:21] Speaker 8: And then later that was early early in the morning,
[14:26] Speaker 8: and then later that evening, uh, fourth bear was struck
[14:30] Speaker 8: and killed at the same location.
[14:33] Speaker 4: So and uh, normally you wouldn't get called into any
[14:40] Speaker 4: kind of like roadkill situation.
[14:43] Speaker 5: Correct, correct, So.
[14:47] Speaker 8: If there is an animal, let's say struck on a
[14:50] Speaker 8: on the road and it's still alive, and maybe uh,
[14:55] Speaker 8: a highway troman or a you know, a state trooper
[14:59] Speaker 8: or a sheriff's deputy or something shows up unseen and
[15:03] Speaker 8: the animal needs to be put down, you know, because
[15:06] Speaker 8: it's correctly injured. They have to call us. We have
[15:08] Speaker 8: to give them permission to do so, because we're the
[15:10] Speaker 8: authority over wildlife. But a dead critter, you know, if
[15:15] Speaker 8: something's just been struck and killed, that is not our authority,
[15:19] Speaker 8: that's the Woming Department of Transportation, because then it's just
[15:23] Speaker 8: a road hazard and it's not live wildlife anymore. So
[15:28] Speaker 8: we typically don't get calls like say, unless it's still alive.
[15:32] Speaker 4: So just for people who aren't following, an elk gets killed,
[15:36] Speaker 4: it attracts the sal with the with the young or
[15:40] Speaker 4: with a year old cubs, and later that the elks
[15:45] Speaker 4: still hasn't been removed, and it attracts another bear which
[15:48] Speaker 4: also gets killed. So what what like you got involved?
[15:52] Speaker 4: I assume at that point after that fourth bear got
[15:56] Speaker 4: killed and what happened after that?
[15:59] Speaker 8: So actually I did get involved a little earlier. I
[16:02] Speaker 8: was I was aware that the that a bull elk
[16:06] Speaker 8: had been struck and killed post impression that it was
[16:15] Speaker 8: going to be picked up. And I'm sure not criticizing anybody.
[16:19] Speaker 8: There's road killed everywhere. It just happens a lot. And
[16:23] Speaker 8: then I got a call early in the morning one
[16:26] Speaker 8: morning that these three bears had been struck. So I responded,
[16:30] Speaker 8: and sure enough, it's a sow again with a couple
[16:33] Speaker 8: of little cubs. And I gathered them up, and the
[16:36] Speaker 8: elk was still there. And again I probably would have
[16:40] Speaker 8: when I had loaded it up, but I had three
[16:43] Speaker 8: bears in the back of my truck, and I made
[16:46] Speaker 8: another wrong assumption that, well, okay, it'll be picked up now,
[16:51] Speaker 8: you know. And then that evening, right at dark, I
[16:56] Speaker 8: get a call that another bear, a bear, was struck
[16:59] Speaker 8: and killed by a vehicle, you know, mile marker fifty
[17:02] Speaker 8: five whatever, And I said, no, that happened this morning.
[17:05] Speaker 8: I told her dispatch and there they said, no, no,
[17:08] Speaker 8: the guy sitting there right now that just hit the bear.
[17:12] Speaker 8: So I went back up there, and sure as heck,
[17:15] Speaker 8: a fourth bear right there on the same spot had
[17:18] Speaker 8: been struck and the elk carcass was still there. So
[17:22] Speaker 8: I went ahead and loaded the elk carcass. That time
[17:25] Speaker 8: m hm and got it out of there. So yeah,
[17:29] Speaker 8: it's uh, you know, these kind of opportunistic I would
[17:32] Speaker 8: call him. It's an unfortunate opportunity that these critters get struck,
[17:38] Speaker 8: whether it's a coyote or you know, we get a
[17:40] Speaker 8: lot of like ravens and magpies that are on these carcases.
[17:44] Speaker 9: Yeah.
[17:44] Speaker 4: I was going to ask, is this the first time
[17:46] Speaker 4: you've seen that kind of like chain reaction roadkill event
[17:50] Speaker 4: or is it is it fairly common?
[17:53] Speaker 3: Well maybe not with bears, but.
[17:55] Speaker 8: You know, this is the biggest one I've seen. Usually
[17:59] Speaker 8: it's one kai or you know, maybe one magpie or
[18:03] Speaker 8: you know, and we have had bears struck before, but
[18:06] Speaker 8: not to this extent.
[18:08] Speaker 6: That's not this many.
[18:10] Speaker 8: This is the first time I've been you know, doing
[18:12] Speaker 8: this for twenty six years, and this is the first
[18:15] Speaker 8: time I've seen it in this this big capacity.
[18:19] Speaker 4: But I would imagine that, you know, Wyoming's got a
[18:24] Speaker 4: lot of desolate spots, even on these major highways, that
[18:28] Speaker 4: this is probably something that happens more often and we
[18:31] Speaker 4: just don't know about it, right.
[18:34] Speaker 8: That does that? That's true. That's true usually when it
[18:37] Speaker 8: is a bear, though most folks do report that we
[18:41] Speaker 8: have a few mountain lions struck in the same you know,
[18:45] Speaker 8: type of scenario, and often it's a passerby that reports it.
[18:50] Speaker 8: I think folks might be a little apprehensive, well, you know,
[18:54] Speaker 8: especially if it's a grizzly bear right there. You know,
[18:57] Speaker 8: they're an endangered species on a and uh so they're
[19:04] Speaker 8: may be reluctant to call. They think they did something wrong.
[19:07] Speaker 8: But bottom line is it's just an accident. And so
[19:10] Speaker 8: it's off on a passerby it says, hey, there's a
[19:12] Speaker 8: dead bear land on the road and we get called
[19:15] Speaker 8: to investigate that.
[19:16] Speaker 1: Can you get a salvage tag for black bear in Wyoming?
[19:21] Speaker 8: You can, yep, yep, if a if a bear is
[19:24] Speaker 8: taken legally, yeah, it can be donated there. Yeah, any
[19:31] Speaker 8: any donation of a of a grizzly bear, course i'd
[19:33] Speaker 8: have to be through the Fish and Wildlife Service. But
[19:36] Speaker 8: any other game under under the jurisdiction of the Game
[19:38] Speaker 8: and Fish you can get a salvage tag.
[19:42] Speaker 1: But not not for roadkill? Can you get it for roadkill?
[19:46] Speaker 6: So interesting?
[19:47] Speaker 8: So with roadkill, there is a new law that just
[19:50] Speaker 8: passed last year and people are allowed to pick up
[19:54] Speaker 8: most roadkill I won't get into all the details, but
[19:58] Speaker 8: basically deer, elk and aneloe, they can acquire that, they
[20:04] Speaker 8: can pick it up it. There's an app it's called
[20:09] Speaker 8: Wyoming five to one one, And if you come across
[20:14] Speaker 8: the roadkill you want to salvage it for whatever reason,
[20:17] Speaker 8: you can log onto that five to one one app
[20:20] Speaker 8: and they basically give you a salvage number and you
[20:23] Speaker 8: can take that whole carcass. Again, some animals like bears
[20:28] Speaker 8: and lions or not, you can't legally pick those up
[20:34] Speaker 8: based on that, so, but other critters you can.
[20:37] Speaker 1: Yes, I would have thought I was in like a
[20:40] Speaker 1: candid camera situation if I was trying to salvage. Yeah,
[20:45] Speaker 1: like this is is this considered baiting?
[20:47] Speaker 3: Right right? Yeah?
[20:51] Speaker 4: Brian, Uh, Wyoming has been been pretty good at building
[20:56] Speaker 4: wildlife overpasses in the last I don't know deck More
[21:02] Speaker 4: like how successful have those been in reducing roadkill at
[21:06] Speaker 4: like sites that formerly just sort of like known like
[21:11] Speaker 4: pinch points where a lot of animals were getting killed
[21:14] Speaker 4: by vehicles? Like have those overpasses like drastically reduced roadkill?
[21:21] Speaker 8: Yes, they really have. They've been so beneficial And these
[21:26] Speaker 8: things as you can imagine are multi million dollar projects.
[21:31] Speaker 8: It's a huge effort between the Game and Fish and
[21:35] Speaker 8: the you know, Department Transportation and you know local wildlife groups,
[21:40] Speaker 8: the landowners. It's it's a monumental effort, and of course
[21:45] Speaker 8: we'd like to have more, but again they're huge costly projects,
[21:49] Speaker 8: and so right now we're picking kind of the low
[21:52] Speaker 8: hanging fruit. We spent decades, you know, identifying migration corridors. Again,
[21:58] Speaker 8: these choke points you're talking about where or roadkill accidents
[22:03] Speaker 8: are very common, and we're focusing on those areas. But yeah,
[22:06] Speaker 8: we'd sure like to expand it into other areas. Absolutely,
[22:10] Speaker 8: they're they're great, They're wonderful.
[22:12] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[22:13] Speaker 3: Cool.
[22:15] Speaker 4: I guess the last thing is, uh, if someone's involved
[22:18] Speaker 4: in hitting hitting an animal or they there's a you know,
[22:23] Speaker 4: maybe a big bull out like on the road dead,
[22:26] Speaker 4: like who do they call?
[22:28] Speaker 3: Who should they be calling?
[22:30] Speaker 8: Yeah, so now that this five to one one app
[22:35] Speaker 8: is available, that's probably the best thing you can even
[22:38] Speaker 8: just if you don't want to harvest that, you know,
[22:41] Speaker 8: pick up that road deal, you can just report it
[22:45] Speaker 8: and it goes to the Department of Transportation and then
[22:49] Speaker 8: the maintenance crew can you know, nose there's a carcass there,
[22:52] Speaker 8: and they can get that scavenged and eliminate that road hazard,
[22:55] Speaker 8: so you don't have this chain reaction thing going on.
[22:59] Speaker 8: So that's that's a great cool. Yeah, great tool to
[23:03] Speaker 8: do that, or just called you know why dot whatever.
[23:07] Speaker 8: But one thing I feel kind of compelled to mention
[23:10] Speaker 8: too is especially with bears, because that's what I deal
[23:14] Speaker 8: with more often than anything. You know, we have some
[23:20] Speaker 8: some highways and everybody's familiar probably with Bear three ninety
[23:24] Speaker 8: nine that was struck and killed on the highway in Wyoming,
[23:28] Speaker 8: and she's darn sure not the first bear. There's been
[23:32] Speaker 8: multiple grizzly bears these roadside I call them habituated roadside
[23:36] Speaker 8: grizzly bears that have been killed along these highways. And
[23:42] Speaker 8: part of what contributes to that is is frankly, people
[23:45] Speaker 8: feeding these bears. And it's not good like say, a
[23:50] Speaker 8: roadkill that maybe's being scavenged by a bear and then
[23:55] Speaker 8: unfortunately a driver comes along and yeah, they don't see
[23:59] Speaker 8: this dark black bear in the middle of the road
[24:02] Speaker 8: in the middle of the night, and they strike it.
[24:05] Speaker 8: That's an accident. But when when people are actively feeding
[24:08] Speaker 8: these bears and and oftentimes it's just to get a photograph.
[24:12] Speaker 8: They don't realize how they're habituating these bears to the
[24:16] Speaker 8: roadside and increasing that opportunity for them to get struck
[24:20] Speaker 8: and killed or a person or a person Yeah, all
[24:24] Speaker 8: the Yeah, you know, family, you know, somebody vacationing from
[24:30] Speaker 8: a you know, different location and they come through Wyoming
[24:34] Speaker 8: or Montana and oh there's a bear off the road
[24:37] Speaker 8: and they clamber out. They pull over and clamber out
[24:40] Speaker 8: to get a picture. And you know, there could be
[24:42] Speaker 8: a semi truck or a delivery truck zipping down the
[24:45] Speaker 8: road at you know, high speeds, not looking for wildlife.
[24:49] Speaker 8: They got a job to do, and yeah, it could
[24:51] Speaker 8: cause a traffic accident or even hit a human. So yeah,
[24:56] Speaker 8: that's that's another big part of this, and that three
[25:00] Speaker 8: ninety nine bear and others do live a considerable amount
[25:05] Speaker 8: of their life roadside and that's not good. They're just
[25:09] Speaker 8: not living the wild natural life. And it was just
[25:14] Speaker 8: a matter of time, you know, before she was struck
[25:16] Speaker 8: and killed on the highway, because yeah, that just happens.
[25:20] Speaker 1: Yeah, but if she didn't live there, you couldn't take
[25:22] Speaker 1: pictures of her.
[25:25] Speaker 8: Yep, And you couldn't make the money and post it
[25:27] Speaker 8: on your Yeah, yeah, it's all about money, that's right.
[25:31] Speaker 10: Yeah.
[25:31] Speaker 1: And just to doccupile on here, it's not the bear's fault.
[25:36] Speaker 1: It's eating your bird seed. It's your fault for leaving
[25:40] Speaker 1: the bird seed out to get eight, So put it away.
[25:44] Speaker 3: That's right, exactly.
[25:45] Speaker 8: That's a good point. Cal I appreciate that. You know,
[25:48] Speaker 8: we work so hard with not only this roadkill stuff,
[25:50] Speaker 8: to try to prevent the accident from happening in the
[25:53] Speaker 8: first place. So much of our work is trying to
[25:56] Speaker 8: show people how to Yeah, you can feed birds, have
[25:59] Speaker 8: it at your house, but there's ways to do it
[26:01] Speaker 8: that the bears can't get to it. You know, if
[26:03] Speaker 8: you can't have chickens, you know, electric fences, you know
[26:07] Speaker 8: your grain, horse grain and stuff, put it away at night,
[26:10] Speaker 8: garbage put you know, secure it all away from a bear.
[26:13] Speaker 8: So we work so hard to prevent all these unnecessarily
[26:18] Speaker 8: deaths in the first place.
[26:20] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[26:20] Speaker 1: And if you leave a dirty campsite, even if it's
[26:23] Speaker 1: all that biodegradable material, watermelon rinds, stuff like that, Uh,
[26:29] Speaker 1: you're just letting bears know that people leave good things behind,
[26:33] Speaker 1: So pack it out. With you.
[26:36] Speaker 6: Free meal. Yep.
[26:37] Speaker 4: Okay, Brian, thanks a lot for joining us. It is
[26:40] Speaker 4: a great talk, interesting stuff. Maybe we we'll check back
[26:44] Speaker 4: in with you about about this kind of same issue
[26:47] Speaker 4: or something else that you're involved with at a later time.
[26:51] Speaker 6: Excellent. No, yeah, I appreciate you having me. Thank you
[26:54] Speaker 6: very much.
[26:54] Speaker 5: Thanks.
[26:55] Speaker 1: Have a good season, neither, well.
[26:59] Speaker 4: I guess yes, Randall's been out el hunting, but poor
[27:02] Speaker 4: Cal hasn't. But we're gonna move.
[27:05] Speaker 3: On to our rut report.
[27:10] Speaker 1: I remember that sound.
[27:15] Speaker 3: Oh it's beautiful. Okay.
[27:18] Speaker 4: This is the week in September that pretty much every
[27:21] Speaker 4: archery elk hunter who hasn't tagged out has been waiting for.
[27:24] Speaker 4: It's the peak breeding period for elk, and the ideally,
[27:29] Speaker 4: you know, the bulls should be screaming their heads off
[27:31] Speaker 4: and you hit the call and they come running in.
[27:33] Speaker 4: It's not always the way it works. But we're gonna
[27:37] Speaker 4: check in with with some hunters we know who are
[27:39] Speaker 4: out there hunting now. We're out hunting recently, just to
[27:43] Speaker 4: see if the action's been hot where they're hunting.
[27:48] Speaker 10: Hey, guys, it's Corey Culkin's coming at you with a
[27:52] Speaker 10: Montana rut report for Wednesday September seventeenth, hopefully close. I'm
[27:59] Speaker 10: in south west Montana. This is day five of an
[28:02] Speaker 10: eight day elk hunt, and it's been pretty slow, to
[28:05] Speaker 10: say the least.
[28:08] Speaker 5: The rut activity, that is.
[28:10] Speaker 10: Elk have been pretty quiet, very nocturnal, hearing them in
[28:13] Speaker 10: the dark moving in and out of our little hunting area.
[28:17] Speaker 10: But it's also been pretty crowded too. Here in a
[28:21] Speaker 10: lot of dug fluty bugles from the ridgetops everywhere, and
[28:25] Speaker 10: I don't know if that's keeping the elk quiet, But
[28:28] Speaker 10: few people that I've ran into have agreed that it's
[28:31] Speaker 10: been pretty slow. Excuse me, pretty slow, So I don't
[28:36] Speaker 10: think it's just me hunted numerous different locations, different drainages,
[28:42] Speaker 10: driven an hour each direction from my camp, trying to
[28:46] Speaker 10: find hot cows and bugle and elk. And it's been
[28:49] Speaker 10: quiet in the general vicinity that I'm in. But the
[28:52] Speaker 10: weather's been inconsistent. It's been raining every other day. It
[28:58] Speaker 10: hasn't froze yet either, which I've always found that first
[29:01] Speaker 10: frost of the year really gets them going. And it
[29:03] Speaker 10: still hasn't gotten that cold yet at least here, so
[29:07] Speaker 10: we got pretty consistent weather The next few days really
[29:10] Speaker 10: hoping things pick up starting this afternoon because we only
[29:12] Speaker 10: have two and a half more days on this little
[29:15] Speaker 10: journey and I won't be able to hunt again into October.
[29:18] Speaker 10: So hoping we can pull it off.
[29:21] Speaker 11: And yeah, good.
[29:22] Speaker 10: Luck to everybody out there, and back to you guys
[29:25] Speaker 10: in the studio.
[29:27] Speaker 11: That was real down Durham here with Philips game calls,
[29:30] Speaker 11: just wrapping up an elk hunt from last week. Man,
[29:34] Speaker 11: we faced tough conditions with full moon and warm weather,
[29:39] Speaker 11: and then it kind of turned. We got a bunch
[29:41] Speaker 11: of storms that kind of rolled in and that was
[29:43] Speaker 11: really nice, got a big cool down, but then we
[29:46] Speaker 11: still had that full moon. We were fighting and it
[29:48] Speaker 11: seemed like bulls were just pretty tight lips still. But
[29:51] Speaker 11: around the tenth things kind of turned. Bull started piping
[29:56] Speaker 11: off a little bit in the mornings, and on the
[29:59] Speaker 11: eleven Son Austin kill a nice bull, call him right in.
[30:03] Speaker 11: And then the twelve, thirteen, fourteenth, things are really starting
[30:08] Speaker 11: to pick up. So I feel like we might have
[30:11] Speaker 11: missed the really good calling action because it was kind
[30:14] Speaker 11: of tough there early. So anyway, everybody get out there
[30:17] Speaker 11: take advantage of this time. I think the bulls should
[30:20] Speaker 11: be ripping here for the next week and a half
[30:21] Speaker 11: two weeks and should be some big bulls hitting the dirt.
[30:26] Speaker 11: Good luck out.
[30:27] Speaker 12: There, Hey, guys, coming to you from central Colorado, right
[30:33] Speaker 12: in the middle of muzzleloader season. We're out here looking
[30:35] Speaker 12: for some elk in the past few days, checking out
[30:39] Speaker 12: another zone today. He might be able to hear it.
[30:44] Speaker 12: Behind me, there's a spring with some running water. You
[30:46] Speaker 12: can kind of see the aspens are starting to turn.
[30:50] Speaker 12: Had some good sign did hear some bugles a couple
[30:53] Speaker 12: of days ago, but haven't gotten close yet. The weather's
[30:58] Speaker 12: been good, good fall weather, plenty of rain, and we
[31:03] Speaker 12: actually had some some snow at about eleven thousand feet
[31:06] Speaker 12: as well, and it got down to about forty degrees
[31:10] Speaker 12: the last couple of nights, so we're hoping that gets
[31:12] Speaker 12: them fired up. So it's been fun checking out these zones.
[31:15] Speaker 12: This time of year. It's a nice time to be out.
[31:17] Speaker 12: So looking forward to the rest of the week and
[31:19] Speaker 12: we'll keep you posted.
[31:20] Speaker 5: Good luck everybody.
[31:23] Speaker 3: Hey, what's up, guys.
[31:24] Speaker 13: This is Logan here with the Reut report coming out
[31:27] Speaker 13: of southwest Montana. Things are definitely shaping up to be
[31:31] Speaker 13: a great couple of weeks out hunting as we head
[31:33] Speaker 13: into the third week of September in the place that
[31:38] Speaker 13: we've been hunting. The opening weekend, things were pretty slow.
[31:41] Speaker 13: We didn't hear too many elk bugling. We saw a
[31:44] Speaker 13: lot of cows, but most of the bulls seemed to
[31:47] Speaker 13: be in their summer range and hadn't came down to
[31:51] Speaker 13: try to breed cows yet. You know, this past weekend
[31:55] Speaker 13: things were starting to pick up. We heard a lot
[31:58] Speaker 13: more elk vocalizations elk rebublin at night, later into the morning.
[32:03] Speaker 13: We're able to call bulls in on Saturday, and we've
[32:06] Speaker 13: heard them talking all Sunday. So this this next week
[32:11] Speaker 13: should be even better. The fall equinox is on September
[32:14] Speaker 13: twenty second this year, which is typically corresponds with the
[32:18] Speaker 13: peak rut, and cows are coming into heat around that
[32:22] Speaker 13: time period. So typically the five or ten days before
[32:27] Speaker 13: and after the fall equinox or the peak rut, you're
[32:30] Speaker 13: going to have a lot of rutting behavior, which will
[32:35] Speaker 13: make elk much more susceptible to calling.
[32:38] Speaker 7: Bulls are going to be fired up.
[32:41] Speaker 3: You know.
[32:41] Speaker 13: It's just a great experience to be in the woods
[32:43] Speaker 13: and here elk bugling. So this is the perfect time
[32:46] Speaker 13: of year to do that, especially these next couple weeks.
[32:49] Speaker 13: So you know, in southwest Montana, we've got some cooler weather.
[32:55] Speaker 7: It's not too hot.
[32:56] Speaker 13: The new moon's approaching, so the nights are going to
[32:59] Speaker 13: be dark, the days are going to be relatively cool,
[33:02] Speaker 13: and those are all the perfect conditions for all county.
[33:06] Speaker 13: So I am very much looking forward to getting back
[33:09] Speaker 13: out there. I hope you guys are too. I've got
[33:11] Speaker 13: a hunting trip plans. You're in for a good however
[33:14] Speaker 13: long you're going to be out there for, and yeah,
[33:19] Speaker 13: can't wait to get back out. I hope you guys
[33:20] Speaker 13: are having fun and.
[33:23] Speaker 5: Good luck out there.
[33:26] Speaker 14: Jason Phelps with Phelps Game Calls, calling in for a
[33:28] Speaker 14: quick Elk Woods Rutt report. I've been in Northern Utah
[33:31] Speaker 14: hunting since the eighth of September. It's now the thirteenth
[33:34] Speaker 14: of September, and kind of what we've seen, we've had
[33:37] Speaker 14: some good days, but it's just not quite cranking yet.
[33:41] Speaker 14: Some of the bigger bulls are still leaving their cows,
[33:43] Speaker 14: you know, in the morning, to go bed separately. Still,
[33:46] Speaker 14: so it just kind of lets you know that things
[33:48] Speaker 14: aren't really happening. We have got on some herds where
[33:50] Speaker 14: some cows have been an estris, and you've heard bulls
[33:52] Speaker 14: glunking and really trailing you know, specific cows. But overall,
[33:56] Speaker 14: I feel like it's just kind of getting going. I
[33:58] Speaker 14: would say in the next day or two, you know,
[34:01] Speaker 14: maybe some cold weather snap in there, but I would
[34:03] Speaker 14: say by the fifteenth, sixteenth, things are heating up to
[34:05] Speaker 14: really be going. But that's my rut report from northern Utah.
[34:10] Speaker 14: Things are just getting ready to be going. And I would,
[34:12] Speaker 14: if I had to guess, the fifteenth to thirtieth is
[34:15] Speaker 14: going to be on fire. Take care of Good luck
[34:18] Speaker 14: to all you out there, and good luck in Elk Woods.
[34:22] Speaker 1: Our audience here asked to decide if any of those
[34:24] Speaker 1: people are you know, worth listening to in the first.
[34:28] Speaker 3: Player full of Shit, Yeah, exactly, exactly.
[34:32] Speaker 5: Corey looks like he is on day five. Okay, day hut.
[34:36] Speaker 4: Those reports just just make even angrier that you're not
[34:39] Speaker 4: out there right now.
[34:40] Speaker 1: Cal oh no, no, I would love love to be
[34:45] Speaker 1: out there, but I always I have always done a
[34:49] Speaker 1: heck of a lot better. If I didn't listen to
[34:51] Speaker 1: any of that type of stuff and you just went hunting,
[34:53] Speaker 1: you just gotta go hh. Yeah, I agree with that.
[34:57] Speaker 1: I mean they're they're pretty consistent reports. You yeah things
[35:01] Speaker 1: right now is the time?
[35:02] Speaker 11: Right?
[35:02] Speaker 5: Sure?
[35:03] Speaker 1: I do. Uh the throwing out the equinox as fact, well,
[35:10] Speaker 1: it's like, you know, fall equinox happens, and the activity
[35:14] Speaker 1: has to peek around that, you.
[35:15] Speaker 3: Know, because some people would say that about the moon too.
[35:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[35:19] Speaker 5: Although I'm inclined to listen to Logan because he filled
[35:23] Speaker 5: every single tag that he had in Montana last year. Yeah, man,
[35:27] Speaker 5: I think the only guy in the office that I.
[35:31] Speaker 1: Think Logan is fantastic. He's a fellow third floor office mate.
[35:37] Speaker 1: Last year was his first.
[35:38] Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
[35:41] Speaker 5: Oh, come on, I'm not I'm just sad.
[35:45] Speaker 1: Context.
[35:47] Speaker 4: All right, it's time for some listener feedback. Give us
[35:50] Speaker 4: some juicy, juicy stuff, phil important questions, hot takes, grumpy people,
[35:55] Speaker 4: happy people, lay it on us.
[35:56] Speaker 7: Sure, this is from Spicy Nachos. I have an ethical
[35:59] Speaker 7: question for you. I would out elk hunting last week
[36:01] Speaker 7: and came across a cow with a severely broken leg.
[36:03] Speaker 7: The kicker is that she had a calf with her
[36:06] Speaker 7: in a wolf dense area. Would to take the cow? Well,
[36:10] Speaker 7: there's some typos in there. But I don't know if
[36:11] Speaker 7: you guys can put to put together a.
[36:15] Speaker 4: Like, I don't know that that's like it's not ethical.
[36:19] Speaker 4: I don't think it's unethical to not shoot her. I
[36:22] Speaker 4: don't know about you guys, but I also think there's
[36:24] Speaker 4: no problem with shooting her.
[36:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, you know there's.
[36:30] Speaker 1: You can't assume with wild legs. Yeah, I've seen uh
[36:35] Speaker 1: way back when the first dude I guided with, he
[36:41] Speaker 1: had a three legged dough that had you know, noticeable limp,
[36:45] Speaker 1: And every set of clients who had a dough tag
[36:48] Speaker 1: was like, well, it'd probably be better if I had
[36:50] Speaker 1: killed her, and you know, we'd be like, yeah, cool,
[36:54] Speaker 1: make a stock. And this this old gal was cagy.
[36:57] Speaker 1: But the truth was, I mean she was there for
[37:02] Speaker 1: five years, twins.
[37:05] Speaker 4: And there was this dough that lived like near my
[37:09] Speaker 4: buddy's house where we used to hunt. There was a
[37:11] Speaker 4: dough we called Peggy and she was around for almost
[37:15] Speaker 4: three years.
[37:16] Speaker 1: Because she reminded you of your aunt.
[37:17] Speaker 3: Because she was missing a leg.
[37:19] Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I will say this past weekend at our
[37:24] Speaker 5: first camp on the Glassy Knob, the first thing we
[37:27] Speaker 5: saw was a bull moose and we're like, that's not
[37:30] Speaker 5: what I thought the first thing we see on this
[37:32] Speaker 5: trip would be, and that that moose had I don't
[37:37] Speaker 5: know if it's a broken leg or some kind of growth,
[37:39] Speaker 5: but its back left leg was swollen up like the
[37:42] Speaker 5: size of a basketball, and it was kind of dragging
[37:44] Speaker 5: it and it fell or almost fell a couple of
[37:47] Speaker 5: times just trying to step over things. And god, it
[37:50] Speaker 5: was hard to watch. But I you know, it's like
[37:54] Speaker 5: if it's it's one thing, if you have a tag, right,
[37:56] Speaker 5: and it's like, that's an animal. If you're after a
[37:58] Speaker 5: cow elk it's got a broken leg, I think that
[38:01] Speaker 5: calf is going to be fine.
[38:02] Speaker 1: Well, I mean the opposite of that, right, is like
[38:05] Speaker 1: that cow has proven to be a successful adult breeding animal.
[38:13] Speaker 1: She is expending energy to keep that calf around. If
[38:20] Speaker 1: you're really thinking about her health, I'd kill the calf.
[38:24] Speaker 1: That way. Mom gets to focus on herself and she's
[38:27] Speaker 1: got the survival instincts. Mathematically, that calf is probably is
[38:32] Speaker 1: voted the most likely to die. Yeah for being an idiot.
[38:35] Speaker 4: And listen, if you're going to decide to shoot an
[38:38] Speaker 4: animal that's injured like that, you're you know, you got
[38:42] Speaker 4: to own up to it.
[38:43] Speaker 3: If you cut that thing open and that whole hind
[38:45] Speaker 3: quarter is green and smelly.
[38:47] Speaker 5: Right, yeah, yeah, that's your tag.
[38:50] Speaker 4: I don't think there's a right or wrong answer for that.
[38:53] Speaker 4: Like if if it makes you feel good to kill her,
[38:55] Speaker 4: kill her. If not, like, go fill your tag with
[38:57] Speaker 4: another animal.
[39:00] Speaker 1: And don't assume.
[39:01] Speaker 7: Logan came in to clarify that he killed those elk
[39:04] Speaker 7: with a bow, so he just wants to. He also
[39:08] Speaker 7: says he's killed elk before that, but I don't know
[39:10] Speaker 7: what he's referring.
[39:11] Speaker 5: I got your logan last year was his first archery elk,
[39:14] Speaker 5: but he's killed other elk.
[39:16] Speaker 7: M This is a big question, but I don't think
[39:18] Speaker 7: it's something we've tackled before on any podcast I've been
[39:21] Speaker 7: a part of.
[39:21] Speaker 5: Oh Jesus.
[39:22] Speaker 7: This is from Ethan Blair. What was your worst hunting
[39:25] Speaker 7: or fishing trip? And why is anything the first thing
[39:29] Speaker 7: that pops into your head?
[39:31] Speaker 5: Mmm.
[39:33] Speaker 1: I'll just tell you, like bad attitudes in camp. We
[39:36] Speaker 1: used to call him the camp cancer and the you
[39:41] Speaker 1: can be on for all reasonable people, it would be
[39:47] Speaker 1: like the worst trip ever. But if everybody on the
[39:51] Speaker 1: worst trip ever has a good attitude, it's still like
[39:55] Speaker 1: an enjoyable time.
[39:57] Speaker 4: I'm trying, I'm trying really hard to think of a
[40:00] Speaker 4: trip where I was like, God, in hindsight, that was horrible.
[40:03] Speaker 4: But a lot of times the horrible trips you look
[40:06] Speaker 4: back and you're like, that was okay, that was fun, Like.
[40:10] Speaker 1: Exactly, that's an adventure.
[40:11] Speaker 5: I have a bad one for my dad when we
[40:14] Speaker 5: went to the Boundary Waters. One of the times we
[40:17] Speaker 5: went to the Boundary Waters, well, he got he got
[40:21] Speaker 5: the treble hook. He got a treble hook, one rock
[40:24] Speaker 5: in each finger, and we busted that out. Then he
[40:28] Speaker 5: was throwing a bear bag or a bear hang over
[40:32] Speaker 5: over a limb, sort of standing on a steep cut bank,
[40:35] Speaker 5: and he fell down the cup bank. You know, his
[40:39] Speaker 5: momentum throwing the throwing the rock took him down the
[40:42] Speaker 5: cup bank. And and that was the same day as
[40:45] Speaker 5: the fishing hook. And then the next day he and
[40:47] Speaker 5: the other guy that was in his canoe capsized in
[40:50] Speaker 5: the middle of a giant lake. A great story. Oh
[40:53] Speaker 5: and he got bit by a spider. And so when
[40:55] Speaker 5: we got back to Ely, they took him into Duluth
[40:58] Speaker 5: because they thought it might have been brown recluse, and
[41:01] Speaker 5: he was. It was like the wound was opening up,
[41:03] Speaker 5: and I was just like, man, that's.
[41:05] Speaker 3: A rough day.
[41:06] Speaker 5: That's a rough that's a rough little trip for one guy.
[41:08] Speaker 5: But that was a great trip for me.
[41:10] Speaker 1: I would rather be on a bad trip with great
[41:13] Speaker 1: attitudes than a great trip with bad attitudes.
[41:16] Speaker 3: Totally, totally, completely.
[41:18] Speaker 7: I'll do a couple more here. That was from Ethan
[41:20] Speaker 7: by the way, this one's this one's fun. I think
[41:23] Speaker 7: this is from Michael. Question for the crew, what coworker
[41:26] Speaker 7: would each of you pick to hunt hunt with for
[41:28] Speaker 7: white tail, elk, and black bear? And I encourage hurting
[41:32] Speaker 7: each other's feelings too.
[41:37] Speaker 3: I don't hunt with like the whole crew for any
[41:40] Speaker 3: of them.
[41:40] Speaker 7: No, you can't say that you gotta pick one.
[41:42] Speaker 3: fIF one for each species.
[41:44] Speaker 5: Sure, Yeah, for white tail, I would say either Mark
[41:51] Speaker 5: or Spencer. Sure, based on based on improving my odds
[41:56] Speaker 5: of success.
[41:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd want Jason Fellis to guide me for.
[41:59] Speaker 5: Elk, yep, and then black bear. Maybe Corey Caulkins.
[42:04] Speaker 3: Yeah, he kills a nice one every year.
[42:05] Speaker 5: Wouldn't be honest? This is kind of ruthless. Well, well,
[42:12] Speaker 5: I mean he seems to have a lot of long,
[42:14] Speaker 5: lonely hikes in the spring, yes, Uh, this is ruthless.
[42:18] Speaker 1: I would love with uh Dirk because I haven't got
[42:25] Speaker 1: a l hunt with him. Jason Phelps is very fun
[42:30] Speaker 1: dude to hunt with, like like just just fun. And
[42:34] Speaker 1: when we hunted the other night that was killed anything
[42:36] Speaker 1: it was. It was a fantastic trip. And I would
[42:44] Speaker 1: rather go white tail hunting with Mark Kenyon over Tony
[42:49] Speaker 1: Peterson purely for you know what, maybe I retract.
[42:55] Speaker 5: That you know what you know you still haven't say
[43:00] Speaker 5: is Clay for black bear?
[43:01] Speaker 1: I'm gonna say Spencer new Heart for whitetail? Yeah, because
[43:05] Speaker 1: I know I would just bug the living shit out
[43:07] Speaker 1: of it and it would be very entertaining the whole time.
[43:10] Speaker 3: You'd be like, God, forget these white tails. I'm gonna
[43:13] Speaker 3: go look for a mule.
[43:14] Speaker 5: Do I've gone to Well, I guess I have black
[43:17] Speaker 5: bear hunted with Clay, but I'd love to sit in
[43:20] Speaker 5: a tree stand over bait with Clay just to see
[43:22] Speaker 5: him watch bears, because I've gone to the zoo with
[43:25] Speaker 5: Clay and watched bears at the zoo with Clay and
[43:27] Speaker 5: that was fun.
[43:28] Speaker 12: Yeah.
[43:28] Speaker 3: He was like, yeah, that would be very entertaining.
[43:32] Speaker 7: Okay, I'll save the rest of later. No, Phil, you're
[43:35] Speaker 7: doing great, Okay, thanks, we'll do one. Mores is from Noah.
[43:37] Speaker 7: Question for Randall on a scale from one to ten,
[43:38] Speaker 7: how bummed are you that you missed the D and
[43:40] Speaker 7: D session?
[43:40] Speaker 5: Honestly, I'm sick to my stomach.
[43:42] Speaker 7: I was too. I was devastated when I can't.
[43:45] Speaker 5: Believe Spencer lined it up in that way. I made
[43:48] Speaker 5: my availability clear, uh and and yeah, it's just enough.
[43:53] Speaker 3: Asked him why you weren't there, and he said you
[43:55] Speaker 3: weren't available?
[43:56] Speaker 5: Yeah, I was country.
[43:58] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[43:59] Speaker 7: I saw Randall declined the invite, and I sent him
[44:01] Speaker 7: a text saying, you're going to miss miss the session.
[44:03] Speaker 3: I was trying to well.
[44:05] Speaker 5: I didn't even realize it was D and D. I
[44:06] Speaker 5: thought it was just gonna be feel trivial, nobody.
[44:09] Speaker 7: The only two people that knew it was happening were
[44:11] Speaker 7: my wife and Spencer's wife.
[44:13] Speaker 5: So I still don't think I understand what D and
[44:15] Speaker 5: D is, But it seemed.
[44:20] Speaker 1: I hopefully Phil, you were you were pleased with our
[44:24] Speaker 1: ability to adapt. It was hard at FT. I was like,
[44:27] Speaker 1: I was so confused, what was going I tried to.
[44:30] Speaker 7: Ease you into it, and you guys did did so well.
[44:33] Speaker 7: There were even people that messaged me saying, I'm so
[44:35] Speaker 7: glad Brody and cal were game to play, because I
[44:38] Speaker 7: thought they would just turn their nose up at it.
[44:39] Speaker 7: And I I had that worry too, which is why
[44:42] Speaker 7: I invited Shelby to bring some enthusiasm into the room
[44:45] Speaker 7: in case you guys just walked out on me.
[44:47] Speaker 1: I just didn't understand. I was like, I was waiting
[44:50] Speaker 1: for like a formal like rule thing. Okay, and now
[44:53] Speaker 1: this is how you play the game. I was like, I, yeah,
[44:58] Speaker 1: you guys didn't need that. It was hard you got Yeah,
[45:00] Speaker 1: he did great, it was a lot of fun.
[45:03] Speaker 4: You'll have to develop a new campaign that campaigns what
[45:06] Speaker 4: it's called, right Phil. That's right, Brody, we'll do a
[45:08] Speaker 4: new campaign sometimes sounds good.
[45:11] Speaker 7: Cool. All right, that's it for now, Phil, For now
[45:14] Speaker 7: we go. We'll save some more for the end of
[45:15] Speaker 7: the show. So all right, keep sending him in.
[45:18] Speaker 3: We got another interview coming up.
[45:20] Speaker 4: Next up, we've got Chris Hill, who is the CEO
[45:22] Speaker 4: of the Conservation Lands Foundation. She'll be joining us from Alaska.
[45:27] Speaker 4: CLF is the only organization dedicated to the conservation and
[45:31] Speaker 4: expansion of national conservation lands, which she'll have to explain
[45:37] Speaker 4: a little bit, which currently total about thirty eight million acres,
[45:41] Speaker 4: And I'm gonna let Cal handle this one because he'll
[45:45] Speaker 4: do a better job than me.
[45:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, Chris and I are internet friends.
[45:49] Speaker 5: Yeah, welcome Chris.
[45:53] Speaker 1: I just say that because we haven't met in person ever.
[45:56] Speaker 1: As this world goes, Yes, how are you Chris Hill?
[46:00] Speaker 15: Great? How are you guys doing things? For having me?
[46:02] Speaker 1: And where are you today?
[46:05] Speaker 16: I am in Haynes, Alaska, which is southeast Alaska, and
[46:10] Speaker 16: it's the first day in four days that it hasn't rained,
[46:13] Speaker 16: so it's really nice out.
[46:15] Speaker 1: Do you would you mind hitting us with a quick
[46:18] Speaker 1: Southeast Alaska hunt fish report? Have you been doing anything fun?
[46:22] Speaker 5: Oh?
[46:23] Speaker 16: Yeah, so you know this is this is the best
[46:26] Speaker 16: time I think to be in Southeast Alaska because it's
[46:28] Speaker 16: co host season so.
[46:31] Speaker 15: And Coho is probably my one of my favorite fish
[46:34] Speaker 15: too to fish for. So they're here. The derby started.
[46:40] Speaker 16: I gotta I gotta keep my championship up and win
[46:44] Speaker 16: the derby again this year.
[46:46] Speaker 5: Oh wow, you're the returning champ.
[46:48] Speaker 16: I am the returning champ on the fly only.
[46:52] Speaker 5: Still nonetheless.
[46:54] Speaker 15: Yeah, it's fun, it's a lot, it's really fun.
[46:56] Speaker 16: And we just got back from a trip to Yakutat
[47:00] Speaker 16: to go surfing and fishing, and we did a little
[47:04] Speaker 16: fish a couple of days on the Sea Tuck to.
[47:06] Speaker 15: Fish for coho and it was just fantastic.
[47:10] Speaker 1: And steelhead fishery too, right they do.
[47:14] Speaker 16: Yeah, so sea took the Sea Tuck is a really
[47:17] Speaker 16: awesome river. It's in the Tongas and it's home to
[47:20] Speaker 16: all five she sees a Pacific salmon and has a
[47:23] Speaker 16: healthy steelhead run. So it's it was, It was really amazing.
[47:29] Speaker 15: Yeah.
[47:30] Speaker 1: Heck yeah, Well, since you said the magic word tongus,
[47:33] Speaker 1: would would you like to really this is your time, Chris.
[47:38] Speaker 1: But we have lots of things happening all at once
[47:43] Speaker 1: in the conservation landscape. What are you and clf uh
[47:50] Speaker 1: working on the most? What's what's your number one item
[47:53] Speaker 1: to tackle?
[47:55] Speaker 15: Oh that's that's a hard one. So because there's just
[47:59] Speaker 15: so many things.
[48:00] Speaker 16: So Conservation Lands Foundation represents this broad, nonpartisan national network
[48:06] Speaker 16: of community leaders that are solely focused on the lands
[48:11] Speaker 16: from BLM. We're focused on expanding, protecting, and restoring those
[48:15] Speaker 16: lands at BLM. And you know, as you guys know,
[48:17] Speaker 16: BLM is the has the largest amount of the country's
[48:22] Speaker 16: public lands at two hundred and forty five million acres,
[48:25] Speaker 16: and just in comparison, that's larger than the Forest Service
[48:28] Speaker 16: and probably three times.
[48:30] Speaker 15: Larger than the National Park Service.
[48:31] Speaker 16: So these are all those lands in between the National
[48:34] Speaker 16: Park Service, and we work with over eighty community led
[48:39] Speaker 16: land conservation organizations across the West and really do it
[48:43] Speaker 16: in this sort of community based advocacy model where investing
[48:48] Speaker 16: in local leaders to protect their lands has really proven
[48:51] Speaker 16: to be one of.
[48:52] Speaker 15: The most effective strategies.
[48:53] Speaker 16: So, you know, really as we look at sort of
[48:58] Speaker 16: the onslaught of all of the things that are happening
[49:02] Speaker 16: and all of the attacks that are happening on public lands,
[49:05] Speaker 16: the idea that we want to privatize these places is
[49:09] Speaker 16: still incredibly unpopular opinion in the communities. And we'll continue
[49:14] Speaker 16: to see, you know, we as a community did a
[49:16] Speaker 16: really great job the selloff of public lands during the
[49:19] Speaker 16: reconciliation fight, but we're going to continue to see the
[49:22] Speaker 16: onslaught of more and more things that are going to
[49:26] Speaker 16: come from the administration and Congress to try to continue
[49:30] Speaker 16: to privatize those lands. So right now, what we're working on,
[49:34] Speaker 16: and I would say there's probably two big issues at
[49:38] Speaker 16: the moment, the repeal of resource management plans within Congress,
[49:43] Speaker 16: and then on the administration side, it's opening up drilling
[49:47] Speaker 16: in the Western Arctic and the repeal of the public
[49:49] Speaker 16: Lands Rule.
[49:51] Speaker 1: And we have not talked a lot about Western Arctic
[49:56] Speaker 1: here recently. Would you want to give us a quick
[50:00] Speaker 1: snapshot of of what the conversation is. Western Arctic obviously
[50:05] Speaker 1: huge caribou area, and our Western Arctic herd is not
[50:12] Speaker 1: historically healthy right now from a population standpoint, and Western
[50:19] Speaker 1: Arctic has some calving areas, and obviously a huge migration
[50:26] Speaker 1: route for our migratory birds.
[50:30] Speaker 16: Absolutely, and it's one of the last remaining intact ecosystems
[50:34] Speaker 16: we have on the planet. Right, I think I think
[50:36] Speaker 16: you went this summer to did you go to the
[50:39] Speaker 16: Western Arctic.
[50:40] Speaker 1: Or well, we have been like we would have been
[50:43] Speaker 1: east to west. Yeah, we were, so we were, we were.
[50:47] Speaker 1: We were still quite aways east to like Prudo. Okay, yeah,
[50:52] Speaker 1: we're closer to Canada.
[50:54] Speaker 15: Okay, gotcha, gotcha.
[50:55] Speaker 16: But that whole entire system, right is super important. And
[51:00] Speaker 16: so right now we're kind of in a holding pattern
[51:04] Speaker 16: at the moment. So in June, the Interior Department proposed
[51:08] Speaker 16: to rescind the current Integrated Activities Plan.
[51:11] Speaker 15: So it's like a management plan for the Western Arctic.
[51:14] Speaker 16: And that plan limited oil and gas development from expanding
[51:19] Speaker 16: into the special areas, which is some of what you've
[51:22] Speaker 16: been talking about within the Western Arctic. The important piece
[51:27] Speaker 16: of that plan is that it really did balance energy
[51:30] Speaker 16: production with the protection of this ecosystem. They opened it
[51:37] Speaker 16: up to rescind it, they proposed to rescind it, they
[51:39] Speaker 16: had a comment period.
[51:41] Speaker 15: That common period.
[51:42] Speaker 16: Has since closed, and during that common period, we really
[51:46] Speaker 16: saw the communities rise up and have a steady drombeat
[51:50] Speaker 16: of opposition. So right now we're waiting for the administration
[51:54] Speaker 16: to release its final plan.
[51:56] Speaker 15: During there at the same time, if you remember, during
[51:59] Speaker 15: the congression all.
[52:02] Speaker 16: Reconciliation fight, the Senate added back in provisions that directed
[52:07] Speaker 16: DOI to resume oil and gas, the oil and gas
[52:10] Speaker 16: leasing program in the Western Arctic. So this that provision
[52:15] Speaker 16: sort of went back to the Trump era plan that
[52:19] Speaker 16: requires at least four million acres to be leased for drilling.
[52:23] Speaker 15: So there's more to come here.
[52:25] Speaker 16: I think we'll it'll start to unravel itself again and
[52:28] Speaker 16: we're probably going to see this in the courts.
[52:32] Speaker 1: And then I guess real quick, what from that community
[52:37] Speaker 1: level that you spoke about, what's the community response in
[52:43] Speaker 1: regarding in regards to rescinding roadless in the in the Tongas.
[52:47] Speaker 1: Tongus and roadless typically go hand in hand. You can't
[52:51] Speaker 1: talk about Roadless Act without talking about Tongus.
[52:56] Speaker 15: Yeah, that's for sure, you know.
[52:59] Speaker 16: So Tongus is national forest and it's it's dear to
[53:04] Speaker 16: my heart because it is in my backyard. This is
[53:07] Speaker 16: where I recreate all the time. And the Tonguess National
[53:11] Speaker 16: Forest is particularly going to be affected by the recision
[53:14] Speaker 16: of the roadless rule because it's you know, the worldless areas,
[53:17] Speaker 16: and the Tongus is almost ninety two percent of all
[53:22] Speaker 16: of the forest. And you know, as you guys know,
[53:24] Speaker 16: the Tongus is the largest national forest in the United States.
[53:27] Speaker 16: It's the world's last remaining temperate rainforest. It's called the
[53:33] Speaker 16: climate forest or the lungs of the North of North
[53:36] Speaker 16: America because of its old growth trees and the ability
[53:40] Speaker 16: for those trees to really like breathe in carbon and
[53:46] Speaker 16: use it as a carbon sink for the rest of
[53:49] Speaker 16: the earth. It's completely and just beautifully biologically diverse it's
[53:54] Speaker 16: home to brown bears.
[53:55] Speaker 15: And black bears and wolves and all sorts of Sitka.
[53:58] Speaker 16: Blacktail deer, which by the way, that's that hunt is
[54:02] Speaker 16: starting soon too, so I'm super excited about that.
[54:05] Speaker 15: And it's like it's one of the most important habitats.
[54:08] Speaker 16: For all five species of Pacific salmon, so it's super important.
[54:12] Speaker 16: It's culturally important for indigenous folks who have steward and
[54:16] Speaker 16: lived on the land since time immemorial, and it's a
[54:19] Speaker 16: tourism powerhouse. You have all of the things right for
[54:22] Speaker 16: the Tongas that just make it a really important place.
[54:25] Speaker 16: And because of all of those things, those communities are
[54:29] Speaker 16: the ones that are really standing up and saying no,
[54:33] Speaker 16: we want to keep the roadless rule intact, and it's
[54:36] Speaker 16: important to do so. You know, the roadless rule has
[54:39] Speaker 16: been around since two thousand and one. It's nine million
[54:42] Speaker 16: acres of the Tongas that are designated as roadless, and
[54:45] Speaker 16: it's important for us to continue that. It's not just
[54:48] Speaker 16: the Tongus that the roadless rule helps, right, it's across
[54:54] Speaker 16: the west and probably a lot of areas where your
[54:58] Speaker 16: folks are listening from as well. So I think we
[55:01] Speaker 16: have one more day. I think the comment period ends tomorrow.
[55:05] Speaker 16: I know Trod Unlimited if you go on to TU
[55:07] Speaker 16: dot org that you can submit a comment on their portal.
[55:13] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[55:13] Speaker 1: T's got a good map too. The Wilderness Society's got
[55:18] Speaker 1: a good map up. BHA's got a good map up.
[55:21] Speaker 1: If you've got on X you can see you can
[55:26] Speaker 1: put on your your roadless area layer and and see
[55:31] Speaker 1: you real quick. Speaking out of bos Angelus here, our
[55:34] Speaker 1: entire watershed for the Gallatin Valley is in a roadless
[55:37] Speaker 1: area and highly highly accessible for all you casual dog
[55:44] Speaker 1: walkers even so exactly. Yeah, well, well used, well loved stuff.
[55:51] Speaker 1: Yeah darn right. Well how do folks learn more about
[55:56] Speaker 1: CLF Chris.
[55:59] Speaker 15: Oh, great question. So we're on all the socials, right,
[56:02] Speaker 15: you can.
[56:02] Speaker 16: You could find us on Instagram and all of the
[56:06] Speaker 16: social media's and then you also can go to Conservation
[56:09] Speaker 16: Lands dot org. That's our website. You can get involved there.
[56:14] Speaker 16: We also, as I said, we work with over eighty
[56:17] Speaker 16: local nonprofits, and I would imagine that a lot of
[56:23] Speaker 16: folks can be connected to some of those local nonprofits
[56:26] Speaker 16: to really do some of the work on the ground
[56:28] Speaker 16: and get to know the folks in the communities.
[56:30] Speaker 5: And I will add that you just mentioned to U's
[56:35] Speaker 5: action page. I went on there and just submitted a
[56:38] Speaker 5: comment now and I even personalized it, so everybody in
[56:42] Speaker 5: the chat, it doesn't take that long to go and
[56:45] Speaker 5: make your voice heard on these public lands issues.
[56:48] Speaker 16: That's right, and you know we've seen time and time
[56:50] Speaker 16: again it's those comments that make a difference.
[56:54] Speaker 15: Some people are like, what is my comment going to do?
[56:58] Speaker 16: But it actually makes a different increase that record to
[57:00] Speaker 16: show that either the public is for or against an issue.
[57:04] Speaker 16: And you know, when we're looking at it from the
[57:07] Speaker 16: agency perspective, but also from the congressional perspective. Congress people
[57:11] Speaker 16: want to hear from their constituencies. And when we band
[57:14] Speaker 16: together and have that voice become you know, very large
[57:18] Speaker 16: and big things happen and things change. And we saw
[57:20] Speaker 16: that with the publicly and sell off fight.
[57:23] Speaker 5: That's right.
[57:23] Speaker 1: And if you folks at home want to think about
[57:27] Speaker 1: it in a very tangible way, do you act differently
[57:31] Speaker 1: when people are paying attention to you?
[57:36] Speaker 15: Exactly?
[57:36] Speaker 1: Our representatives and our senators, they can darn sure act
[57:41] Speaker 1: differently when they know a lot of people are paying
[57:44] Speaker 1: attention to them. So right, that's part of getting your
[57:47] Speaker 1: comment yeah, uh, Chris Hill, thank you so much. Con
[57:52] Speaker 1: Conservation Lands Foundation, we'll have to have you back on
[57:56] Speaker 1: and where to go, Where to folks to find you again.
[58:01] Speaker 16: Conservation lands dot org or any social channels.
[58:05] Speaker 1: Awesome, Well, thank you so much, and we or I
[58:09] Speaker 1: we'll see you in the heart of the cold, cold
[58:11] Speaker 1: city next week when we're going to talk about climate
[58:15] Speaker 1: and conservation and public lands in Manhattan an actual island.
[58:22] Speaker 3: Running around there.
[58:23] Speaker 15: No, we might see some rats though.
[58:27] Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks Chris.
[58:31] Speaker 16: Yeah, thank you all, and I'll see you soon.
[58:33] Speaker 11: Thank you.
[58:33] Speaker 5: Thanks Chris.
[58:36] Speaker 3: We got a new segment for you today and it
[58:40] Speaker 3: is called Three Harsh Truths.
[58:43] Speaker 7: Hey, little honey, let me launch your candle cozy so
[58:46] Speaker 7: hot to handle now, spin doctors like I just.
[58:58] Speaker 3: I just came up with this segment of couple of
[59:00] Speaker 3: days ago, and you just, oh my.
[59:02] Speaker 5: God, we should just make up new segments all the time.
[59:05] Speaker 7: Oh please don't.
[59:07] Speaker 5: It's the highlight of this show.
[59:09] Speaker 4: Three Harsh Truths is where our panel of experts, self
[59:14] Speaker 4: appointed experts, We're gonna share some things that most people
[59:19] Speaker 4: might not want to believe, but they're certainly true, at
[59:23] Speaker 4: least according to us. And I thought about calling it
[59:27] Speaker 4: hot takes, but it's like overused and hot takes are
[59:30] Speaker 4: typically opinions that are expressed like without any real evidence,
[59:34] Speaker 4: and we wouldn't do that to you, So we're gonna
[59:37] Speaker 4: share ours with you in order cal laid on us.
[59:41] Speaker 3: What's a harsh truth.
[59:44] Speaker 1: Buying your hunting and fishing license is not enough. You
[59:48] Speaker 1: have got to if you want to be a responsible
[59:52] Speaker 1: hunter or angler, you have got to participate in our
[59:57] Speaker 1: system of wildlife management, which sometimes you would feel like
[1:00:02] Speaker 1: is being political, but uh, fill out your surveys, go
[1:00:09] Speaker 1: to in person, go to your fishing game committee meetings,
[1:00:16] Speaker 1: participate in the comment periods, and write your senators and
[1:00:22] Speaker 1: congress people. It makes a huge difference.
[1:00:24] Speaker 4: I love filling out those surveys and showing up to
[1:00:28] Speaker 4: meetings too.
[1:00:29] Speaker 5: Is like you feel so much more involved and you
[1:00:32] Speaker 5: have you have such a greater awareness of what's happening.
[1:00:36] Speaker 3: Is you're to learn a bunch of stuff you otherwise
[1:00:38] Speaker 3: would not.
[1:00:39] Speaker 5: Sometimes it feels like cheating in terms of just like
[1:00:42] Speaker 5: being aware of what's happening with wildlife in your state.
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: Yep, yeah, Do you want to like round robin this
[1:00:49] Speaker 1: thing or do you want me to go do all three.
[1:00:52] Speaker 4: Well, we decide you can lay another one on us,
[1:00:55] Speaker 4: raynal and I should have told you we're just gonna
[1:00:58] Speaker 4: do one each.
[1:00:59] Speaker 3: Oh, okay, great, But if you got an all quick one, lay.
[1:01:02] Speaker 1: It on ye Antelope jump fences.
[1:01:07] Speaker 3: I've seen it.
[1:01:09] Speaker 4: They can do it around for fifteen and is wondering what.
[1:01:14] Speaker 3: To do when they end up at.
[1:01:17] Speaker 5: That dovetails with Uh, this isn't my harsh truth. But
[1:01:20] Speaker 5: one of my harsh truths is, like all the stuff
[1:01:22] Speaker 5: you've heard isn't isn't right?
[1:01:26] Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, Randall.
[1:01:29] Speaker 5: My harsh truth is this. Uh, there's there's a lot
[1:01:34] Speaker 5: of like a discourse online about social media and hunting
[1:01:40] Speaker 5: and and like is social media ruining hunting? And and
[1:01:45] Speaker 5: a lot of it focuses specifically on like what's unique
[1:01:50] Speaker 5: about hunting and social media. My harsh truth is social
[1:01:53] Speaker 5: media's ruining everything. If you have any hobby, it's being
[1:01:56] Speaker 5: it's being ruined by social media. And I would just like,
[1:02:00] Speaker 5: if you look at like all the problems, I feel
[1:02:03] Speaker 5: like a lot of the problems that people complain about
[1:02:05] Speaker 5: in the hunting world are just problems about the modern world,
[1:02:09] Speaker 5: Like permits in national parks are hard to get, like
[1:02:14] Speaker 5: everything's getting too expensive, and so I just feel like
[1:02:18] Speaker 5: there's a lot of like finger pointing within the hunting
[1:02:20] Speaker 5: community about what's ruining who's ruining what. I mean, there
[1:02:26] Speaker 5: is that too, but it's like thermals. It's like, if
[1:02:29] Speaker 5: you want to go backpacking somewhere, someone's already you could
[1:02:31] Speaker 5: watch a video of someone with a GoPro on their
[1:02:33] Speaker 5: head walking that trail.
[1:02:36] Speaker 4: Like I went down, like I've been running more and
[1:02:42] Speaker 4: more lately, and I went down a running social media
[1:02:45] Speaker 4: trail tragically the other day. And it's like social media
[1:02:50] Speaker 4: is ruining running. I'm like really like, because it's not
[1:02:54] Speaker 4: ruining it for me. It's like whether you choose to
[1:02:56] Speaker 4: allow it to ruin it for.
[1:02:58] Speaker 10: You or not.
[1:02:59] Speaker 3: Like no one's on the gun to your head telling.
[1:03:02] Speaker 4: You to like believe or follow what's on every social
[1:03:05] Speaker 4: media page.
[1:03:06] Speaker 5: It's ridiculous and I think that, Like now, I had
[1:03:11] Speaker 5: a lot of thoughts about this, and they sort of sprawled.
[1:03:13] Speaker 5: The one is you haven't everything you've heard isn't true.
[1:03:16] Speaker 5: The other is like, just decide what you want and
[1:03:19] Speaker 5: you'll get it out of hunting, right, Like, like, oh,
[1:03:22] Speaker 5: do you want to go somewhere and see no see
[1:03:25] Speaker 5: see no other hunters.
[1:03:26] Speaker 3: You can do that, or you can decide to let
[1:03:29] Speaker 3: social media ruin.
[1:03:30] Speaker 5: It for you. Yeah exactly, Like like it's it's all
[1:03:32] Speaker 5: about keeping it in perspective and just recognizing that like
[1:03:37] Speaker 5: the finger pointing and the X y z. Yeah, like
[1:03:42] Speaker 5: that's all. It's not unique to our community, not at all.
[1:03:47] Speaker 5: And there's a lot of breath and and ink wasted
[1:03:50] Speaker 5: on it.
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're going to do social media, do d
[1:03:54] Speaker 1: I y woodworking plumbing electrocal. Yeah yeah, then man, that's
[1:04:03] Speaker 1: who I'm watching.
[1:04:04] Speaker 5: Yeah, oh, I know, like there's I'm sure there's plumbers
[1:04:06] Speaker 5: out there, Like social media's ruined plumbing.
[1:04:09] Speaker 3: I don't make as much money as damn it.
[1:04:11] Speaker 5: Randall can replace the light switch now, Yeah, exactly.
[1:04:20] Speaker 3: Nice, Randall. I like that month's a little longer. I'll
[1:04:25] Speaker 3: get through it though.
[1:04:27] Speaker 4: There's a quote from a hunting writer and I don't
[1:04:29] Speaker 4: call who it is, but it's stuck with me over
[1:04:32] Speaker 4: the years, and it goes something like, anyone can take
[1:04:34] Speaker 4: a five hundred yard shot at an animal, but it
[1:04:37] Speaker 4: takes a really good hunter to sneak in and kill
[1:04:39] Speaker 4: one at fifty yards. And the reason I'm telling you
[1:04:42] Speaker 4: that quote is I strongly believe, based on years of experience,
[1:04:49] Speaker 4: that it's a mistake to encourage or allow young or
[1:04:52] Speaker 4: novice hunters to take long ass rifle shots at big
[1:04:56] Speaker 4: game animals. And like long is relative, right, like it's
[1:05:00] Speaker 4: it's this, there's not one specific distance, but I'll get
[1:05:05] Speaker 4: I'll get.
[1:05:05] Speaker 3: Further into that later.
[1:05:07] Speaker 4: But the reason why is, even if a new hunter
[1:05:10] Speaker 4: is practiced and they're capable of making four or five
[1:05:13] Speaker 4: hundred yard shots at the range, shooting at animals like
[1:05:17] Speaker 4: in the heat of the moment is just way different
[1:05:19] Speaker 4: than shooting at paper targets. And for every hunter, but
[1:05:23] Speaker 4: especially an experienced hunter, the goal should always be to
[1:05:27] Speaker 4: get as close as possible to minimize the chance for
[1:05:30] Speaker 4: a poor shot, a miss or a wounded animal whatever.
[1:05:35] Speaker 4: But I think just as important that that's the reason
[1:05:37] Speaker 4: you always hear, but just as important long range shooting
[1:05:41] Speaker 4: at animals is not how you learn to be a
[1:05:43] Speaker 4: good hunter.
[1:05:43] Speaker 3: It's just like not has nothing to do with it.
[1:05:47] Speaker 4: Becoming a good hunter comes from reading like things like
[1:05:51] Speaker 4: reading sign watching the behavior and body language of animals,
[1:05:56] Speaker 4: learning how to like pick a route that keeps you
[1:05:59] Speaker 4: out of sight on a start, being quiet, paying attention
[1:06:02] Speaker 4: to the wind direction, Like those are the things that
[1:06:06] Speaker 4: that's how you become a good hunter. And I like, personally,
[1:06:11] Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna get up on the soapbox, like
[1:06:13] Speaker 4: I I held to a strict no shots over two
[1:06:16] Speaker 4: hundred yards rule with my older son for his first
[1:06:19] Speaker 4: three big game seasons. And I know he's like a
[1:06:23] Speaker 4: better hunter for it because he was learning along the way.
[1:06:26] Speaker 4: And it taught me a lot because it didn't hamper
[1:06:31] Speaker 4: his success one bit. In his first three hunting seasons,
[1:06:34] Speaker 4: he killed three meal deer bucks in an antelope buck
[1:06:36] Speaker 4: like following that two.
[1:06:38] Speaker 3: Hundred yard rule.
[1:06:39] Speaker 4: And then like, now he's a little older and I'll
[1:06:42] Speaker 4: let him. He's shot more, he's shot at animal, he's
[1:06:44] Speaker 4: shot at targets more, and I'll let him stretch that range.
[1:06:47] Speaker 5: Out a little bit.
[1:06:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, this is just like a funny observational story.
[1:06:53] Speaker 1: But my good buddy Jim, like old old, old old
[1:06:57] Speaker 1: Jim down in Idaho, he's real. He's yeah, I think, well,
[1:07:02] Speaker 1: he's always the oldest of our hunting group. And he
[1:07:08] Speaker 1: bought a super fancy sheep rifle ultra light thing.
[1:07:13] Speaker 4: And that's the thing is those types of long range
[1:07:15] Speaker 4: systems are like so prevalent now that it's just like there,
[1:07:19] Speaker 4: you know.
[1:07:20] Speaker 1: There, But here's the fun thing, Like he and he's
[1:07:22] Speaker 1: got a you can shoot like a mile on his
[1:07:25] Speaker 1: own property, like step out the door, and he shoots
[1:07:27] Speaker 1: all the time and has the ability to do it.
[1:07:29] Speaker 1: And he's very capable. And about three seasons after getting
[1:07:35] Speaker 1: this rifle, he's like the furthest shot I have ever
[1:07:40] Speaker 1: made with this exploative expletive rifle is one hundred and
[1:07:45] Speaker 1: fifty yards. Yeah, And because when you grow up and
[1:07:50] Speaker 1: you've put the time in to become that good hunter,
[1:07:54] Speaker 1: your interactions with animals are much tighter.
[1:07:58] Speaker 3: They're also more fun and excite they.
[1:08:00] Speaker 1: Are, but you are just naturally putting yourself in a
[1:08:04] Speaker 1: tighter distance. And the reality is is like the closer
[1:08:08] Speaker 1: you can get, the fewer variables you are going to encounter. YEP,
[1:08:14] Speaker 1: And you know your ability to see what could be
[1:08:17] Speaker 1: blocking your shot, no matter what scope you have at
[1:08:20] Speaker 1: four hundred and fifty yards is not as good as
[1:08:23] Speaker 1: it's going to be at one hundred and fifty years.
[1:08:26] Speaker 4: I like, I'm not I don't want this seem like
[1:08:28] Speaker 4: I'm trashing long range shooting. I just think it's a
[1:08:32] Speaker 4: disservice to like young and new hunters to be like, there's.
[1:08:36] Speaker 3: A bucket five hundred yards, lay down, shoot, you know,
[1:08:38] Speaker 3: like it's just like they're not learning much.
[1:08:41] Speaker 1: Oh man, I watched some folks. I watched these guys
[1:08:44] Speaker 1: shoot this buck last year and it wasn't all that far,
[1:08:50] Speaker 1: but this is like a dense grizzly bear area, and
[1:08:55] Speaker 1: you know, they charged up the hill. They probably shot
[1:08:57] Speaker 1: at like four hundred and fifty yards, which is a
[1:08:59] Speaker 1: long shot, but not crazy far when you're talking about
[1:09:03] Speaker 1: long range shooting. And I watched those guys walk around
[1:09:09] Speaker 1: trying to find this deer that dropped in its tracks
[1:09:12] Speaker 1: for forty minutes, to the point where I was like,
[1:09:15] Speaker 1: I better help like bird dog these people into where
[1:09:18] Speaker 1: the deer drops. And there's just things like that that
[1:09:22] Speaker 1: people don't consider. Yeah, and if you don't know you
[1:09:27] Speaker 1: whacked that thing, a lot of people are going to
[1:09:29] Speaker 1: give up on it and be like, oh God, maybe
[1:09:31] Speaker 1: I missed. The doubt starts creeping in. And there's the
[1:09:36] Speaker 1: state of Wyoming. They had a conversation in the Fishing
[1:09:41] Speaker 1: Game regulation process about trying to address long range shooting
[1:09:46] Speaker 1: and there's ways that all of which would be you know,
[1:09:51] Speaker 1: it's it's regulating morality, which is not something we can
[1:09:55] Speaker 1: do effectively. But limitation on the amount of ammunition you
[1:10:02] Speaker 1: can pack with.
[1:10:03] Speaker 3: You make you think twice about.
[1:10:07] Speaker 1: And I think I'm like, what would the effect be
[1:10:11] Speaker 1: if it's like how many tags do you have? You
[1:10:15] Speaker 1: got one valid tag? You get five rounds. That's three day, right,
[1:10:23] Speaker 1: and two extra in case you think the rifle got
[1:10:26] Speaker 1: knocked off a zero already need to prove you're.
[1:10:28] Speaker 5: You're still funny. I've never heard that the round limitation.
[1:10:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, because they do it on like wm as for
[1:10:36] Speaker 1: your waterfowl.
[1:10:37] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, interesting, try to limit skybusting.
[1:10:42] Speaker 3: Anyway, that's what I think so.
[1:10:47] Speaker 6: Or not.
[1:10:50] Speaker 7: Yeah, there should be when the second started out, there
[1:10:53] Speaker 7: should be some sort of music bed playing underneath it. It's
[1:10:55] Speaker 7: like a very you know, kind of four poding intense.
[1:10:58] Speaker 5: You could have a little button you push and it
[1:10:59] Speaker 5: just because oh, that's harsh. Throughout the Smacked Down, whenever
[1:11:03] Speaker 5: one of us makes a good point to go ooh
[1:11:05] Speaker 5: that's harsh.
[1:11:06] Speaker 4: Phil, do we got any reactions to those harsh truth
[1:11:09] Speaker 4: or or or maybe some some of the listeners.
[1:11:12] Speaker 7: I mean there were there was some happening throughout the thing.
[1:11:15] Speaker 7: I I don't remember that you know their timestamps, but
[1:11:17] Speaker 7: I couldn't tell you exactly what they were.
[1:11:20] Speaker 5: Well, give us something what we reference to here, let's
[1:11:24] Speaker 5: do a general chat.
[1:11:26] Speaker 7: Mostly what's he want? Halfle finger? He said one thing,
[1:11:32] Speaker 7: you should use your woodsmanship, not marksmanship.
[1:11:34] Speaker 1: See.
[1:11:34] Speaker 7: I don't know what he's referring to here. That's what
[1:11:36] Speaker 7: we just talked about.
[1:11:38] Speaker 5: Great, Jim. This this if you're still on there, This
[1:11:40] Speaker 5: moose that I saw with the busted up leg. The
[1:11:43] Speaker 5: leg was on the left side and the right antler
[1:11:46] Speaker 5: had grown in all kinds of funky. I'll send you
[1:11:49] Speaker 5: a picture you told us about that.
[1:11:51] Speaker 7: At some point, it's mostly people asking mogor questions about
[1:11:55] Speaker 7: Hungary and people talking about Steve on theovon shout out.
[1:12:00] Speaker 4: Well, if nobody's got any anything interesting to say or ask?
[1:12:05] Speaker 7: See, this is a this, this is a me problem.
[1:12:07] Speaker 7: I screwed up. I should have been on it putting
[1:12:09] Speaker 7: these comments up as it was happening.
[1:12:10] Speaker 3: Damn it.
[1:12:11] Speaker 7: I'm so sorry.
[1:12:12] Speaker 5: You're having such a big week with D and D.
[1:12:15] Speaker 5: You find some good come on. This is my favorite part.
[1:12:18] Speaker 7: No, no, I've got listener feedback. I'm just thinking of
[1:12:21] Speaker 7: stuff in.
[1:12:22] Speaker 3: Direct to the three harsh truths.
[1:12:25] Speaker 5: Let's get this, I knew you didn't drop the ball.
[1:12:31] Speaker 7: Cal This is from Ethan when you kill your monster grizz,
[1:12:34] Speaker 7: What is your plan with it? Rug mount soft tan
[1:12:37] Speaker 7: sausage roast.
[1:12:38] Speaker 1: Do you think this far ahead? Or is that bad
[1:12:40] Speaker 1: bad juju?
[1:12:42] Speaker 7: If you feel like you're is there any superstition around I?
[1:12:46] Speaker 1: Well, it's it's part of logistical planning that you do.
[1:12:51] Speaker 1: You need to plan for being successful, and then if
[1:12:54] Speaker 1: you're unsuccessful, you're just carrying extra stuff, right, So yeah,
[1:12:59] Speaker 1: I am planning. The big negative of a coastal bear
[1:13:06] Speaker 1: in the fall specifically is they are they're feeding on salmon.
[1:13:10] Speaker 1: And I have friends that take a chunk of meat
[1:13:13] Speaker 1: off every single bear and cook it. And and I
[1:13:17] Speaker 1: believe them because they have they have the largest database
[1:13:23] Speaker 1: data set that they're working with.
[1:13:25] Speaker 3: Can I interrupt? Yes, in Alaska, there's no salvage rule
[1:13:29] Speaker 3: for those fall bears, is there? Correct?
[1:13:32] Speaker 1: And you don't? Yeah, So my plan is to ideally
[1:13:42] Speaker 1: do some cooking up there if I am successful, and
[1:13:46] Speaker 1: come up with a game plan for what I'm going
[1:13:50] Speaker 1: to do with some big old grizzler bear meat. The
[1:13:54] Speaker 1: other thing I have tags for because I've I've purchased
[1:13:58] Speaker 1: them in advance are our wolves. And in this area,
[1:14:02] Speaker 1: you know, it's an area where the caribou population is
[1:14:05] Speaker 1: of concern and they're encouraging people to harvest wolves, and
[1:14:09] Speaker 1: they feel like there's a very high population of wolves.
[1:14:12] Speaker 1: And I have always wanted to cook wolves, so I'm ideally, well,
[1:14:22] Speaker 1: we'll have like a big old grizzly bear ham and
[1:14:26] Speaker 1: a big old wolf ham and we'll do some fun
[1:14:29] Speaker 1: cooking down here in the meat Eater studio too so
[1:14:33] Speaker 1: and then as far as like rug Mount soft tan
[1:14:35] Speaker 1: stuff like I have not thought that far, like I
[1:14:40] Speaker 1: it will be utilized. I guarantee you.
[1:14:44] Speaker 7: Great. This is just an update from Kyle who asked
[1:14:47] Speaker 7: a question about differences between spring and fall turkey, and
[1:14:50] Speaker 7: he's happy to report based on that advice, he got
[1:14:54] Speaker 7: his first turkey ever yesterday. Right.
[1:14:56] Speaker 5: I saw that. I saw that on the damned social media.
[1:14:59] Speaker 5: That's ruining everything.
[1:15:00] Speaker 6: Terrible.
[1:15:01] Speaker 5: Congratulations, congrats, Kyle Charles says.
[1:15:04] Speaker 7: Its media to Rose still happening. I haven't seen a
[1:15:06] Speaker 7: new episode in a while. It is Yohanny's gearing up
[1:15:08] Speaker 7: to film the next batch of episodes, so stay tuned.
[1:15:10] Speaker 5: It requires coordinating a lot of schedules.
[1:15:14] Speaker 7: Caleb, because you were mean to me and yelled, I
[1:15:16] Speaker 7: will answer your ask your question. If you need vision assistance,
[1:15:20] Speaker 7: do you prefer glasses or contacts in the field.
[1:15:24] Speaker 5: I can tell you what Sydney preferred, because my vision
[1:15:27] Speaker 5: is perfect. She preferred laser eye surgery.
[1:15:30] Speaker 4: There you go, options see contacts here.
[1:15:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen people have issues with both. But I
[1:15:41] Speaker 1: do feel very poorly for one of my good friends
[1:15:45] Speaker 1: who I won't won't name, used to call him the
[1:15:48] Speaker 1: pot bellied stallion. Uh, looking at that dude with his
[1:15:54] Speaker 1: glasses all fogged up when he's sucking wind trying to
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: get up the hill fast.
[1:15:58] Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's like looking through buying knows in a
[1:16:00] Speaker 4: spot and scute with glasses is kind of a pane.
[1:16:03] Speaker 1: But but do you feel like you like I feel
[1:16:07] Speaker 1: like you should have like a little eyeball kit if
[1:16:10] Speaker 1: you're going to go the contact route, multiple like you
[1:16:14] Speaker 1: need your solution.
[1:16:15] Speaker 5: Sydney always did context and it was like contexts in
[1:16:19] Speaker 5: the tent. It was just like a nightmare.
[1:16:22] Speaker 3: Well, dailies are way easier.
[1:16:23] Speaker 4: I mean, they're a little more trash to deal with,
[1:16:26] Speaker 4: but I mean I just bring twice as many dailies
[1:16:29] Speaker 4: as I think I'm gonna need because the dust gets
[1:16:31] Speaker 4: in there.
[1:16:32] Speaker 5: What you know, at one point we pulled some dailies
[1:16:34] Speaker 5: out of the trash and washed them to put them
[1:16:38] Speaker 5: back in her eyes.
[1:16:39] Speaker 1: Interesting, improvised and overcome the laser.
[1:16:44] Speaker 7: I will say aiden, thank you for watching the show
[1:16:47] Speaker 7: live for the first time. I appreciate it. I have
[1:16:50] Speaker 7: seen your question that you have submitted literally nine times
[1:16:54] Speaker 7: about getting a young hunter into it. I haven't picked
[1:16:58] Speaker 7: your question because that's that's we've talked about that a lot.
[1:17:01] Speaker 7: And also Brodie's the only dad on the panel.
[1:17:03] Speaker 5: So but my my parents didn't hunt.
[1:17:06] Speaker 7: Randall, And how did you get into hunting, and how
[1:17:09] Speaker 7: would you encourage other young hunters to get into hunting.
[1:17:11] Speaker 5: Get your friends into it, find friends who have We
[1:17:15] Speaker 5: had like a group of friends and one of our
[1:17:17] Speaker 5: dads hunted. Yeah, there's ways, and we all transmitted it
[1:17:20] Speaker 5: through osmosis. There's mentorship programs with fish and game departments.
[1:17:26] Speaker 5: Buy our book Catch Caerry Fish, Count the Stars. There's
[1:17:29] Speaker 5: a great big.
[1:17:30] Speaker 3: Section in there on how to do it like, there's
[1:17:33] Speaker 3: ways to do it for sure.
[1:17:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll tell you, if you're interested in it and
[1:17:37] Speaker 1: you're not just actively figuring it out, you're probably not
[1:17:41] Speaker 1: cut out for the hunting game. I say that that
[1:17:44] Speaker 1: that sounds like a harsh truth, Haru. But I'll tell you, like,
[1:17:51] Speaker 1: I was surrounded by very casual hunters and it wasn't
[1:17:58] Speaker 1: like anything near the way people live it in this office.
[1:18:03] Speaker 1: And I bugged the hell out of the people to
[1:18:08] Speaker 1: facilitate my obsession with hunting without having anybody directly there
[1:18:16] Speaker 1: to be a mentor, right Like, I just there was
[1:18:18] Speaker 1: something about it. I was very interested in it, and
[1:18:22] Speaker 1: I pushed and pushed and pushed, and people kept throwing
[1:18:26] Speaker 1: footballs and basketballs and baseballs at me, saying like here,
[1:18:30] Speaker 1: play with this. You at them exactly so you'll you'll
[1:18:36] Speaker 1: figure it out. Like if it if you're interested in it,
[1:18:38] Speaker 1: you just got to make it happen and don't let
[1:18:41] Speaker 1: stuff holds you back.
[1:18:43] Speaker 5: Ye. Great, Sorry to do that to you, Phil.
[1:18:46] Speaker 7: Well, Jordan says, Phil is getting little sterns into this
[1:18:48] Speaker 7: big trivia podcast.
[1:18:49] Speaker 1: Jordan's shut up, that's not the reason. I'm just a
[1:18:55] Speaker 1: little prickly.
[1:18:56] Speaker 7: After that uh, that misunderstanding about the feed Act with
[1:19:00] Speaker 7: the three harsh Trews and everyone got mad at me.
[1:19:02] Speaker 7: And also like I carry a small amount of insecurity
[1:19:05] Speaker 7: about being a non hunter who has to pick hunting
[1:19:07] Speaker 7: questions for a bunch of hunters to answer.
[1:19:09] Speaker 1: It's a hard job.
[1:19:10] Speaker 4: Back heres, there you go, There you go, Phil laying
[1:19:15] Speaker 4: down the law.
[1:19:17] Speaker 3: All right, we're gonna move on from that.
[1:19:19] Speaker 7: Phil, Oh, let's do it please.
[1:19:23] Speaker 4: You know next time you'll do better, Thanks Brody. So,

[1:21:22] Speaker 4: bunch of new products and content coming out soon. Ray
[1:21:26] Speaker 4: will show that to the camera.
[1:21:30] Speaker 3: That's the new jerky we got I think three different flavors.
[1:21:33] Speaker 5: Maybe it's delightful.
[1:21:36] Speaker 3: It was great. This is bition.
[1:21:39] Speaker 4: So if you're laying and you don't know how to
[1:21:41] Speaker 4: make your own jerky out of deer, elk or whatever
[1:21:43] Speaker 4: you got in the freezer, that stuff's real good.
[1:21:45] Speaker 3: It's buffalo.
[1:21:48] Speaker 4: We've also got after a long wait, see that Phil
[1:21:55] Speaker 4: there it is, it's here. Releases next week the apped

[1:22:07] Speaker 12: Man.
[1:22:09] Speaker 7: Uh I you know what I I learned a word
[1:22:11] Speaker 7: miso phonia. You guys know what that is.
[1:22:13] Speaker 3: That's when a sound really bugsy, real bad.
[1:22:16] Speaker 7: When people are chewing into a microphone.
[1:22:18] Speaker 3: You've got it.
[1:22:20] Speaker 1: Masticated.
[1:22:21] Speaker 7: I mean, I support it because we are meat eater,
[1:22:24] Speaker 7: har hars.
[1:22:27] Speaker 3: It's jerky, you gotta chew it.
[1:22:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, the working hard to make the jerky a super
[1:22:35] Speaker 1: cool project. So this round is sourt of saying, uh,
[1:22:42] Speaker 1: you know, American buffalo. And then we're working on a
[1:22:47] Speaker 1: bunch of other uh like sustainable projects that that support
[1:22:56] Speaker 1: are ranchers that are doing really good things for wildlife
[1:23:01] Speaker 1: and their way living.
[1:23:02] Speaker 3: That's right.
[1:23:04] Speaker 4: And by the way, if you like, don't know this

[1:23:19] Speaker 4: and anglers so they can keep fighting the public lands fight.

[1:23:27] Speaker 4: anyone who enjoys public lands if you buy that calendar advance, Yeah.

[1:24:13] Speaker 5: the living Room, which is available for free on Pluto
[1:24:15] Speaker 5: and Amazon Prime. It's one of my all time favorite documentaries,

[1:24:21] Speaker 5: to stream for free, and so I'm excited to revisit
[1:24:26] Speaker 5: that rich, rich text about exotic pet ownership. Excellent.
