Bottom Line: At Christmas on the Southern Front, beyond the Surovikin lines broken by Ukrainian forces during the second counteroffensive, a reporting team crossed drone-watched roads into a destroyed city to reach soldiers sheltering in a basement. There, a flag signed by young Ukrainians in Milan had followed one soldier from Kharkiv to russia, Bakhmut and NATO training in England. The team counted about four close-range artillery shots every five minutes, and soldiers described russian drones arriving in relentless waves.
