Bottom Line: On July 17, 2014, a Buk launcher of the russian 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade from Kursk shot down flight MH17 over Hrabove, killing 298 people, a finding confirmed by Dutch investigators, The Hague District Court, ICAO and the European Court of Human Rights. Twelve years on, the piece traces moscow’s veto and denial campaign and Girkin’s boast of having fallen on a terykon, arguing that the impunity of 2014 prepared the 2022 invasion and that memory is a defense function.
