[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we definitely knew it was
[0:08] Speaker 1: not ai man. I'm Greg Rosenthal here in my garage
[0:13] Speaker 1: after a long Memorial Day weekend talking to the only
[0:17] Speaker 1: man that makes sense, after honoring those who lost their
[0:21] Speaker 1: lives in service. Yes, it's one of our allies, talkSPORT
[0:26] Speaker 1: UK Zone, Will.
[0:27] Speaker 2: Gavin, Thanks thanks for joining us. Will, no worries.
[0:30] Speaker 3: Thank you for having me on from the officially hottest
[0:33] Speaker 3: day May has ever seen in London, in a country
[0:37] Speaker 3: where we don't have air conditioning. So if at some
[0:40] Speaker 3: point I just slump over to the side and pass out,
[0:42] Speaker 3: keep going on without me, I'll be fine eventually.
[0:44] Speaker 2: Yes, you are a man who can play hurt. I can.
[0:48] Speaker 2: The twins are in the background.
[0:49] Speaker 1: You might hear Will's beautiful young daughters, and you might
[0:55] Speaker 1: hear us just updating you on what happened over a
[0:58] Speaker 1: busy four day weekend. For me personally, I had my
[1:00] Speaker 1: in last year. I went to Vegas, I went to
[1:03] Speaker 1: a Dodgers game. We barbecued, like, hey, I need a
[1:06] Speaker 1: vacation from my vacation, but let's go through all the news.
[1:09] Speaker 2: We got some. We just want to get you caught up.
[1:12] Speaker 1: I got about fifteen items things that we learned over
[1:15] Speaker 1: the long weekend, And it really started, like right after
[1:18] Speaker 1: we taped our last show, Matthew Stafford signed a contract extension.
[1:22] Speaker 2: We were expecting this to happen.
[1:25] Speaker 1: Will, but I thought the details of it were the
[1:28] Speaker 1: part that I was looking for and most interested in.
[1:32] Speaker 1: The short version is it's a one year, fifty five
[1:34] Speaker 1: million dollar extension. The details indicate it's really just a
[1:40] Speaker 1: five year raise for this season for Matthew Stafford. What
[1:45] Speaker 1: do you think about the way they're kind of approaching
[1:48] Speaker 1: this era of Stafford contractually and of course with ty
[1:52] Speaker 1: Simpson now waiting in the wings.
[1:54] Speaker 3: Yeah, from their perspective, what he's gonna boost, He's gonna
[1:58] Speaker 3: make at least forty five dollars, probably will make the
[2:01] Speaker 3: full amount you imagine, barring injury or anything else. And
[2:05] Speaker 3: they've set him up so that there is that into
[2:09] Speaker 3: next year guaranteed money available if they wish to continue this.
[2:13] Speaker 3: If they don't send inside that ty Simpson is the future,
[2:17] Speaker 3: obviously there's something going on there where they need to
[2:20] Speaker 3: keep the man happy. After making the decision to draft
[2:23] Speaker 3: a quarterback at thirteen, overall, it's not a decision I loved.
[2:27] Speaker 3: I have to be honest, I've probably not been on
[2:29] Speaker 3: here giving my views on this, but when guys have
[2:33] Speaker 3: gone into situations before and been the backup for a
[2:37] Speaker 3: top tier star and it's worked with the Aaron Rodgers
[2:39] Speaker 3: and Jordan Loves etc. Of this world, it's been somebody
[2:42] Speaker 3: with a special level of talent, and it's totally made
[2:45] Speaker 3: sense to me. Ty Simpson isn't necessarily that guy, and
[2:48] Speaker 3: at thirteen felt incredibly rich to me. But now they
[2:52] Speaker 3: feel set, Now they feel like they're ready to go.
[2:54] Speaker 3: I just I kind of wish they've given Matthew Stafford,
[2:56] Speaker 3: not just nextra five million dollars, but maybe somebody else
[2:59] Speaker 3: to throw the ball to.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the contract was very team friendly. The
[3:06] Speaker 1: last contract Stafford signed was very team friendly. It was
[3:10] Speaker 1: reported he could have gotten more money to leave for
[3:12] Speaker 1: the Raiders in the giant smart move, like they could
[3:14] Speaker 1: have won the Super Bowl last year. But five million
[3:17] Speaker 1: dollars extra for this year and essentially no guaranteed money
[3:22] Speaker 1: for next year. All it does is force the Rams
[3:24] Speaker 1: to make a decision, and more like Matthew Stafford make
[3:27] Speaker 1: a decision whether he's still playing or not. Fairly early,
[3:30] Speaker 1: I think his contracts guaranteed, you know, early into the
[3:33] Speaker 1: next league year.
[3:34] Speaker 2: It's right at the beginning. But even then, if he.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Decides to return one year, fifty million dollars for next
[3:39] Speaker 1: year is a bargain. One year forty five million dollars,
[3:42] Speaker 1: which is what he's getting this year, is a bargain.
[3:45] Speaker 1: This guy just won the MVP. If he was angry
[3:48] Speaker 1: at the Rams, and I can't imagine he was thrilled,
[3:53] Speaker 1: my takeaway was, well, he didn't take him out on
[3:55] Speaker 1: them on this contract. If anything, he thought he could
[4:00] Speaker 1: have put them over a barrel. So if you're looking
[4:02] Speaker 1: to give a Matthew Stafford pat on the back as
[4:04] Speaker 1: a Rams fan, here.
[4:05] Speaker 4: You go and listen. On top of all of that,
[4:08] Speaker 4: I think.
[4:09] Speaker 3: That the fact that the real winners in this or US,
[4:13] Speaker 3: the football reporting public, the public enjoying it as well,
[4:16] Speaker 3: because what we don't get is at the start of
[4:18] Speaker 3: next season, the Willie won't he this year? Didity the
[4:21] Speaker 3: award ceremony, well done, Matthew, really appreciate it. But while
[4:24] Speaker 3: we watch what's happening in Pittsburgh, what happened in Pittsburgh,
[4:27] Speaker 3: we're not going to have to have any of that
[4:28] Speaker 3: next offseason, we'll know very early whether he's staying or going,
[4:31] Speaker 3: whether they're going to give him that guaranteed money. I
[4:33] Speaker 3: suspect that they want him to be there for at
[4:35] Speaker 3: least two years, and I think they see ty Simpson's
[4:36] Speaker 3: at the starter in twenty twenty seven. But it gives
[4:40] Speaker 3: them that leeway. It gives Stafford that leeway. So yeah,
[4:42] Speaker 3: it gives us an answer nice and earlier.
[4:44] Speaker 1: It puts a little more pressure on everything about this season.
[4:48] Speaker 2: I think that's what ty Simpson did.
[4:50] Speaker 1: That's the most negative thing that they did with tys Simpson,
[4:52] Speaker 1: other than the opportunity cause of not getting a good player,
[4:56] Speaker 1: was that if Stafford, for whatever he isn't, is hurt
[4:58] Speaker 1: slash struggling through eight games, then we're just automatically thinking
[5:05] Speaker 1: is this going to be the end for Stafford in
[5:07] Speaker 1: LA because this contract, on top of other things, makes
[5:10] Speaker 1: it really easy for them to move on, like he's
[5:13] Speaker 1: going to have to be a top ten quarterback, no
[5:15] Speaker 1: reason to think he wouldn't be as long as he's healthy.
[5:17] Speaker 1: It's a great situation. So that's the Stafford of it all.
[5:20] Speaker 1: The next section actually has our our two through five points.
[5:23] Speaker 1: We got we got about fifteen things we learned. Will
[5:26] Speaker 1: I'm all about learning in the off season.
[5:28] Speaker 4: I know it.
[5:29] Speaker 1: I'm giving it section in the land of Giants, we
[5:34] Speaker 1: have four Giants little nuggets, starting with Joe Shane signing
[5:40] Speaker 1: one of the most surprising contract extensions of the offseason.
[5:45] Speaker 1: If Joe Shane is getting multi year extensions, Will, Hey,
[5:50] Speaker 1: I think we should all feel better in the world
[5:52] Speaker 1: of football that we could be getting, you know, security
[5:55] Speaker 1: long term. It's not such a crazy business.
[5:57] Speaker 3: It's so obvious that the dynamic is shift there right
[6:00] Speaker 3: and under Joe Shane. And there's some Giants fans who's
[6:03] Speaker 3: still backing based on the drafting he's done, et cetera.
[6:05] Speaker 3: But twenty two to forty five and one in the
[6:08] Speaker 3: time he's been there, John Harbor directing, like reporting directly
[6:13] Speaker 3: to ownership, directly to the Marris director, to whoever else.
[6:16] Speaker 4: Effectively, what is he now? Is he.
[6:20] Speaker 3: Just scouting? Is it just player acquisition? Is it just
[6:24] Speaker 3: what is his role? And so maybe like you know,
[6:28] Speaker 3: they've worked together on this draft, they were pleased with
[6:30] Speaker 3: bringing in Arvill Reese and everything else they did, and
[6:33] Speaker 3: so maybe they've turned around and gone, do you know
[6:35] Speaker 3: what we like it. We're redefining it. We'll give you
[6:38] Speaker 3: a multiyear contract, but you're in this new job role.
[6:40] Speaker 3: But none of that seems to have come out. Yeah,
[6:42] Speaker 3: it just it baffles me. It baffles me that I
[6:45] Speaker 3: would have thought that John Harbor would have gone and
[6:47] Speaker 3: got his own guy and had somebody that he would
[6:49] Speaker 3: work with.
[6:49] Speaker 4: But maybe Harbell's fallen in love with him and it's
[6:52] Speaker 4: going to be a wonderful marriage.
[6:54] Speaker 2: Or maybe you ask what is rollers?
[6:56] Speaker 1: I mean, I think for a lot of teams it
[6:58] Speaker 1: would be the role of like assistant GM that that
[7:00] Speaker 1: feels like the role because he's reporting to someone Dona Ponde,
[7:04] Speaker 1: who's been reporting to John Harbaugh and he or he's
[7:07] Speaker 1: like the director, you know, the director of scouting, essentially
[7:10] Speaker 1: like managing a couple of things.
[7:11] Speaker 2: And that's fine.
[7:12] Speaker 1: The Giant, he probably has a great relationship with ownership.
[7:14] Speaker 1: They like continuity and these are the types of contracts.
[7:19] Speaker 1: Even though Joe Shane is making a great living for
[7:22] Speaker 1: the average person, that if the Giants wanted to move
[7:25] Speaker 1: on and Joe Shane is the fall guy after this year,
[7:28] Speaker 1: he absolutely still could be. So I don't take too
[7:31] Speaker 1: much stock into it. But they just kind of wanted
[7:33] Speaker 1: to quiet the narrative, and he was entering the final
[7:37] Speaker 1: year of his contract. Much more important to the twenty
[7:39] Speaker 1: twenty six Giants will Is Malik Neighbors. John Harbaugh spoke
[7:44] Speaker 1: about Neighbors last week the Giants, as we mentioned, a
[7:47] Speaker 1: lot of the new coach teams had started OTA's last week.
[7:52] Speaker 1: We've got eleven more teams on the field.
[7:55] Speaker 2: Will on Tuesday, teams are practicing, We got the majority
[7:59] Speaker 2: of the leg Football is back. I think football is back.
[8:03] Speaker 1: And one of the reasons we know is John Harbaugh
[8:07] Speaker 1: is speaking to the media.
[8:08] Speaker 5: Yeah, he's in the middle of it. He's in the
[8:10] Speaker 5: middle of it. It's just it's such a hard thing.
[8:12] Speaker 5: It's a it's an a cl and whatever else he
[8:14] Speaker 5: had in that knee not a simple knee, you know.
[8:18] Speaker 5: So he's he's in the he's in the slog of it,
[8:22] Speaker 5: you know, the grind of it, I would say. So
[8:24] Speaker 5: he's fighting through it, you know, and he's here every
[8:27] Speaker 5: day working hard at it. Just impossible to predict. I mean,
[8:31] Speaker 5: the goal is to you know, start to seize and
[8:33] Speaker 5: get out there sometime in training camp. That'd be the goal.
[8:36] Speaker 5: And we'll see what happens. If he's out there, great,
[8:39] Speaker 5: he's not out there, great, you know, we'll be ready
[8:41] Speaker 5: to go either way. But I know he's fighting like
[8:44] Speaker 5: crazy to do his best to be out there, and
[8:46] Speaker 5: he's with the guys every day.
[8:47] Speaker 1: That's John Harbaugh and Malik Neighbors. The lack of specificity
[8:52] Speaker 1: there and how John Harbad normally handles injuries, which is
[8:55] Speaker 1: not to give away much of anything. Actually did feel
[8:57] Speaker 1: like giving away something there.
[8:58] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and it was the if he's not out there.
[9:02] Speaker 3: If he's out there, great, If he's not out there great.
[9:04] Speaker 3: I'm not sure that that's quite right. I think they're
[9:07] Speaker 3: desperate for him to be out there for the start
[9:09] Speaker 3: of the season. They bring in Isaiah Likely right, that's
[9:11] Speaker 3: the big pass catching option they brought in, and then
[9:14] Speaker 3: a bunch of kind of wide receiver, three to four guys,
[9:16] Speaker 3: Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney, the guy they getting the third
[9:20] Speaker 3: round Malachi fields like. But the fact is his elite
[9:23] Speaker 3: Neighbors is where the pass catching element of this offense
[9:27] Speaker 3: wants to run through. Jackson Darton. We're going to get
[9:29] Speaker 3: onto a bit more about him in a moment. I
[9:31] Speaker 3: imagine he's got a big year ahead of him, and
[9:35] Speaker 3: they'd much much rather with a big year ahead of him.
[9:37] Speaker 4: He is number one guy on the field.
[9:39] Speaker 3: So hopefully we do hear more in the offseason, and
[9:42] Speaker 3: hopefully it's positive because he's a player you just love
[9:44] Speaker 3: to see play. But yeah, it's as long as he's
[9:48] Speaker 3: playing by the time they play internationally later in the year,
[9:50] Speaker 3: then we'll.
[9:50] Speaker 2: Staff you are a selfish bastard.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Will I now put the ads at him just based
[9:58] Speaker 1: on that quote and the far hollow up surgery, everything
[10:01] Speaker 1: we've heard, I think it's unlikely he's starting the season
[10:04] Speaker 1: out there. And when he says great that he's not
[10:06] Speaker 1: on the field, I do hope and think he's alluding
[10:10] Speaker 1: to we're thinking about Malik Neighbors long term and this
[10:13] Speaker 1: could be something where he is not truly one hundred
[10:15] Speaker 1: percent this season even and that he's going to miss
[10:19] Speaker 1: some real time, which is disappointing, but it happens.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Another big injury for the Giants.
[10:24] Speaker 1: They lost Roy Robertson Harris to a torn achilles hate.
[10:28] Speaker 1: When these injuries happened during the off season, program OTA's
[10:31] Speaker 1: working out. Not a familiar name to a lot of
[10:34] Speaker 1: people out there, but he was slated to start. He
[10:37] Speaker 1: essentially had a starting type role last year. They did
[10:40] Speaker 1: sign a number of kind of stop gap veterans at
[10:44] Speaker 1: defensive tackle. Shelby Harris, DJ Reader is a good player
[10:48] Speaker 1: as a nose, Teckle Leaky Fotu has played a lot.
[10:50] Speaker 2: In the NFL.
[10:51] Speaker 1: But those guys in aggregate we're supposed to help replace
[10:55] Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence, Roy Robertson Harris was the guy that they
[10:58] Speaker 1: inherited from last year. Was probably the best player of
[11:00] Speaker 1: that entire group. So now you tradeed away Dexter Lawrence,
[11:05] Speaker 1: you lose a Corps veteran for the season. Suddenly that
[11:08] Speaker 1: run defense, which already on paper didn't look great, looks
[11:12] Speaker 1: even worse. Abdul Carter not known for his run defense,
[11:15] Speaker 1: but now he's known for mixing it up. In terms
[11:19] Speaker 1: of social media, you alluded to Jackson Dart. The biggest
[11:24] Speaker 1: news on a pretty quiet NFL weekend, Let's be real,
[11:28] Speaker 1: was Jackson Dart introducing our president over here. You might
[11:32] Speaker 1: be familiar, will Donald Trump had a rally for some
[11:36] Speaker 1: congressman yet and you know it's just typical. He introduces
[11:41] Speaker 1: Donald Trump and a lot of people get excited about
[11:46] Speaker 1: it or annoyed about it, and then Abdul Carter jumps
[11:49] Speaker 1: in and.
[11:50] Speaker 2: He has the tweet. I thought this was ai man,
[11:54] Speaker 2: what are we doing here?
[11:57] Speaker 1: Later on he responded to a lot of people getting
[12:00] Speaker 1: upset about it, saying, me and JD six referring to
[12:04] Speaker 1: Jackson Dirt didn't know he was called JD six are good.
[12:07] Speaker 1: We spoke earlier as men. Y'all can keep y'all narratives.
[12:12] Speaker 1: And that was in response to a reporter, Benvollin of
[12:17] Speaker 1: the Boston Globes specifically, who was like, oh, there could
[12:19] Speaker 1: be dissension. There's dissension in the Giants locker room. That's well,
[12:25] Speaker 1: you know, from a sober international perspective on us, what's
[12:29] Speaker 1: happening over here.
[12:30] Speaker 3: Look, the moment Jackson's art turns up at that rally,
[12:33] Speaker 3: it makes international news, regardless of whether you're a Giants fan,
[12:37] Speaker 3: an NFL fan, or anything else, because it's a major
[12:39] Speaker 3: sports style turning up a political rally for a guy
[12:42] Speaker 3: who you know, causes some controversies. It's fair to say.
[12:45] Speaker 3: So when I saw the absol Cart tweet, I did.
[12:49] Speaker 3: My immediate jump was, you know, raised eyes, sending imoss
[12:53] Speaker 3: to people firing around and being like, do you think
[12:55] Speaker 3: this is an actual issue? It feels like off season fourder.
[12:59] Speaker 3: It feels like the kind of thing will get past.
[13:01] Speaker 3: It feels like the kind of thing that John Harball
[13:03] Speaker 3: squash out. But the fact that apple Cart was so
[13:06] Speaker 3: open and immediate in his response to it, he might say,
[13:11] Speaker 3: we're all good and we're all cool, and we've spoken
[13:13] Speaker 3: about it, but I don't know, it doesn't feel like.
[13:16] Speaker 3: It feels like it's gonna have to be a let's
[13:17] Speaker 3: keep politics out of the locker room thing rather than
[13:19] Speaker 3: they're actually suddenly best friends.
[13:21] Speaker 4: Because it's quite a big move to make, I guess.
[13:26] Speaker 1: I mean, look, anyone who listens to this show knows
[13:30] Speaker 1: I'm not a fan of Jackson Dart's politics or Dottal Trump.
[13:34] Speaker 2: But John Harbaugh Jim Harbaugh have literally been at the
[13:38] Speaker 2: White House with Trump like they are.
[13:41] Speaker 1: They are vocal supporters of Trump, all these players, it's
[13:45] Speaker 1: pretty obvious with you know who they support, who they
[13:48] Speaker 1: don't if they want to be out there. I know
[13:50] Speaker 1: it's a different step to introduce him, but this is
[13:53] Speaker 1: an NFL locker room. Of course, a lot of the
[13:57] Speaker 1: locker room supports the president, and plenty of the locker
[14:00] Speaker 1: room does it, and plenty.
[14:01] Speaker 2: Is aware of that.
[14:02] Speaker 1: To me, it is it is kind of juvenile for
[14:06] Speaker 1: the reporters who are like John Harbor is going to
[14:09] Speaker 1: have to address this is going to be a big problem.
[14:11] Speaker 2: It's like this, they're grown men. This is not a
[14:14] Speaker 2: new phenomenon. Believe me.
[14:15] Speaker 1: Everyone in the locker room probably you know, has an
[14:18] Speaker 1: idea of where Jackson Dart like lies politically, and if
[14:21] Speaker 1: they're like getting along personally.
[14:24] Speaker 2: It's it's just I don't know.
[14:27] Speaker 3: Yeah, it might be it might be off season storm
[14:29] Speaker 3: in a tea cup. It might absolutely be that. But
[14:32] Speaker 3: I just think for Abdol Carter to speak out for
[14:33] Speaker 3: a guy who is very much a forefront of this,
[14:37] Speaker 3: of this team as well, it's that just that was
[14:39] Speaker 3: what felt like a big deal to me. Not the bear,
[14:42] Speaker 3: you know, the fact that they're going to have to
[14:44] Speaker 3: all get on with each other. There's yeah, there's seventy
[14:46] Speaker 3: five guys in that locker room. There's however, many coaches
[14:49] Speaker 3: as well, like, yeah, they of course there's going to
[14:52] Speaker 3: be to said amongst them, But I don't think it's
[14:54] Speaker 3: going to be some issue that carries over into the season.
[14:56] Speaker 1: The funny thing is I do feel strongly in a
[14:59] Speaker 1: way about this, and that's about the people that are
[15:03] Speaker 1: like aggressively, Oh, this doesn't bother me.
[15:07] Speaker 2: I'm a political like I don't care about anything. Doesn't
[15:11] Speaker 2: bother me. What people say, grow up, the grown up
[15:15] Speaker 2: perspective is like, yeah, like some people really support it.
[15:19] Speaker 2: It's fine.
[15:19] Speaker 1: It's totally fine for Jackson Dart no matter I disagree obviously,
[15:24] Speaker 1: to do what he wants to do there, and it's
[15:26] Speaker 1: fine for someone to disagree. It's like, yeah, that's that's
[15:30] Speaker 1: living in this country, living in this world right now.
[15:33] Speaker 2: It's just like it's fine. Adults can disagree about things.
[15:36] Speaker 3: We are covering a lot of American culture within the
[15:42] Speaker 3: World Cup conversation, right Like, obviously football, soccer is the
[15:45] Speaker 3: number one sport here.
[15:46] Speaker 4: I've been doing a like a soccer based show over.
[15:50] Speaker 2: The line, I was gonna pump it up. Let me
[15:51] Speaker 2: cut you off so you don't have to. I was
[15:54] Speaker 2: gonna at the end of the show.
[15:55] Speaker 1: Will is Uh just launched a great podcast YouTube show.
[16:01] Speaker 1: It's on talkSPORT The s Word with Master Tefsfatsian, who
[16:06] Speaker 1: a great friend of Jordan rod Rieg's on the show. Great,
[16:09] Speaker 1: great journalists over here, and so people should be checking
[16:12] Speaker 1: that out in addition to all the great work you
[16:14] Speaker 1: do on the NFL.
[16:15] Speaker 3: Will I appreciate that, brother, but sorry, obviously no, no,
[16:18] Speaker 3: I appreciate it, But obviously you can't help but get
[16:21] Speaker 3: into the politics of the football, the Donald Trump of it,
[16:24] Speaker 3: all the you know, everything else that goes along with it.
[16:27] Speaker 3: And so I think we are set for a summer
[16:29] Speaker 3: where the conversation of politics in sport is going to
[16:32] Speaker 3: really dominate the landscape internationally. And so I think this
[16:36] Speaker 3: will disappear very quickly.
[16:38] Speaker 1: Yes, and it's a it's a little more tight wait
[16:42] Speaker 1: when it comes to the World Cup and everything that
[16:44] Speaker 1: Trump and FIFA and uh yeah, good, good luck with
[16:47] Speaker 1: all that. Our next item, it was gonna be our
[16:49] Speaker 1: last item, by the way, it was going to be
[16:52] Speaker 1: our fifteenth item of the day was Robert Sala telling
[16:56] Speaker 1: the Titans media that one of the first things that
[16:59] Speaker 1: he did as Titan's head coach was get rid of
[17:02] Speaker 1: seed oils in the locker room. But I do feel
[17:05] Speaker 1: like this there is a connection here. Jfk Jr.
[17:10] Speaker 4: Excited to hear this, right, okay.
[17:11] Speaker 2: Jfk Jr.
[17:12] Speaker 1: Very again, seed oils Eric, our producer, notes that we're
[17:17] Speaker 1: talking about political rallies and seed oils in the rundown,
[17:21] Speaker 1: which is an indication that football might not be back.
[17:23] Speaker 2: Actually football be back.
[17:26] Speaker 3: You attack those inflammatory markers, Bob Sala, and it's a
[17:30] Speaker 3: game of inches. Anything that's going to get you over
[17:32] Speaker 3: the line or your micro optimization nonsense.
[17:36] Speaker 1: All I'm saying is when all the well, when the
[17:38] Speaker 1: doctors and the medical the health professionals are like, no,
[17:42] Speaker 1: seed oils are totally fine, Like Sala, I'm just putting
[17:46] Speaker 1: them into the bucket.
[17:47] Speaker 2: It's like the bucket of.
[17:48] Speaker 1: Guys who got really into NFTs back in the day.
[17:52] Speaker 2: Let's get back to the football. Big contract.
[17:54] Speaker 1: Jack Campbell signed with the Lions four years, eighty one
[18:00] Speaker 1: million dollar extension fifty one point five million dollars guaranteed
[18:05] Speaker 1: for the linebacker just going into his fourth season. You
[18:08] Speaker 1: think back to that draft will and the picks that
[18:13] Speaker 1: the Lions said everyone reached on at the time, Jamir
[18:17] Speaker 1: Gibbs in Jack Campbell and back then the idea was like, well,
[18:21] Speaker 1: if you just flipped the picks and you put Brian
[18:23] Speaker 1: Branch in the first round, who was their other great
[18:25] Speaker 1: second round pick that I'm spacing on at the moment.
[18:29] Speaker 1: Then if you just flipped the picks, everyone would have said,
[18:32] Speaker 1: it's totally fine. Well, in the end, they took Jack
[18:34] Speaker 1: Campbell and Jamior Gibbs in the exact right spot. There
[18:37] Speaker 1: are two of the best players at their position, and
[18:39] Speaker 1: he has signed through twenty thirty.
[18:41] Speaker 2: Give the Lions some love.
[18:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny you said that, because I was about
[18:45] Speaker 3: to sit here and say it's funny that people will
[18:48] Speaker 3: still knock that. Sam Laporte was the other guy they
[18:50] Speaker 3: took in the second round, of course, and it was
[18:52] Speaker 3: always one of those things to me where if Jack
[18:54] Speaker 3: Campbell had been a second round pick and performed as
[18:56] Speaker 3: he'd done and had the career he had, everyone would
[18:59] Speaker 3: have herald did it as a sensational draft picker. He's
[19:02] Speaker 3: such a great guy. He's such a great fit for
[19:04] Speaker 3: the scheme. He's such a great fit for the locker
[19:06] Speaker 3: room and for Dan Campbell. They absolutely love him in
[19:09] Speaker 3: that building. He's very no nonsense football. I've had an
[19:11] Speaker 3: opportunity to chat to Jack Campbell a couple of times, actually,
[19:14] Speaker 3: like he's a guy the Lions have put up for
[19:16] Speaker 3: us a couple of times before and if you talked
[19:18] Speaker 3: to him about football, he's one of He's a great
[19:21] Speaker 3: interview because he just loves talking x's and o's, and
[19:24] Speaker 3: you know, I've got a huge amount of time for him.
[19:27] Speaker 3: It's when you start to look at the numbers and
[19:29] Speaker 3: you say, like, he's only in guaranteed money behind the
[19:32] Speaker 3: likes of Fred Warner and Rokan Smith. He's only in
[19:35] Speaker 3: overall money behind Rocan Smith because Fred Warner's deal was
[19:38] Speaker 3: only three years. Like, those sound like huge numbers, but
[19:41] Speaker 3: we're talking about guys that are twenty nine, thirty years old.
[19:44] Speaker 3: Jack Campbell still in his mid twenties, there's only that
[19:47] Speaker 3: second contract's got a lot of time there.
[19:49] Speaker 4: He's really great at what he does.
[19:51] Speaker 3: I think this is as much as it sounds like
[19:53] Speaker 3: a lot of money, I think, and it's a real
[19:54] Speaker 3: win for the line.
[19:55] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[19:55] Speaker 1: I mean I'd rather have Jack Campbell than rok On Smith,
[19:58] Speaker 1: no question. I mean, he was a better player last year.
[20:01] Speaker 1: It kind of slipped on me that he was first
[20:04] Speaker 1: team All Pro last year, but his rate of improvement
[20:07] Speaker 1: is really why you got to be careful with off
[20:09] Speaker 1: ball linebackers, specifically as rookies, because sometimes he looked a
[20:13] Speaker 1: little lost and covered. That as a tough position to get,
[20:16] Speaker 1: but he is so athletic. He is really the prototype
[20:21] Speaker 1: of the three down linebacker that can do everything, and
[20:24] Speaker 1: he's gotten so much better. He was a playmaker in
[20:27] Speaker 1: his third season and also is just kind of taking
[20:29] Speaker 1: control of that room. I remember Dan Campbell this offseason
[20:31] Speaker 1: when they talked about letting Alex Azeloni go. He said
[20:36] Speaker 1: it was in part not that Jack Campbell's changing positions,
[20:38] Speaker 1: but it's just like that's Jack Campbell's room. We want
[20:41] Speaker 1: him to be the dude. And so what they did
[20:44] Speaker 1: was they they didn't give him the fifth year option.
[20:46] Speaker 1: They did give him the huge money and I assume
[20:50] Speaker 1: it's essentially almost like a two year or three year
[20:52] Speaker 1: deal with a lot of the money guaranteed. So good
[20:54] Speaker 1: on the Lions and Jack Campbell. They just got to
[20:56] Speaker 1: start hitting in the draft. Are you high or low
[20:58] Speaker 1: on the Lions heading and you twenty twenty six, they
[21:02] Speaker 1: do they win the division, putting you on the spout right.
[21:05] Speaker 3: That I really like the Bears to win the North again, actually,
[21:10] Speaker 3: but I'm higher on them than last year. They've corrected
[21:13] Speaker 3: a lot of the issues that they've had. I still
[21:16] Speaker 3: want to see what that line looks like. I still
[21:17] Speaker 3: want to see what the protection looks like. I still
[21:19] Speaker 3: want to see like I want to see it on
[21:21] Speaker 3: the field. But overall, I think like they are in
[21:23] Speaker 3: a position to at least be a playoff team this
[21:25] Speaker 3: year and not to just bring out cliches on a
[21:30] Speaker 3: hot summer's day. But you know, it's getting the dance
[21:32] Speaker 3: all of that stuff. So yeah, I think they've got
[21:33] Speaker 3: a great chance of a great season. But it's such
[21:36] Speaker 3: competitive division. Like you said to me that you like
[21:38] Speaker 3: the Packers for it, I couldn't knock it.
[21:40] Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm still trying to decide who I'm going
[21:42] Speaker 1: to end up picking that division. I'll definitely have them
[21:44] Speaker 1: in the playoffs. And yeah, with the extension, you always
[21:46] Speaker 1: get attack on the first year in the extension, so
[21:49] Speaker 1: then it's really five for eighty three. I think, actually
[21:51] Speaker 1: that's a contract that will age very well.
[21:54] Speaker 3: You're the king of the extension for me, by the way,
[21:56] Speaker 3: like you are the guy who knocks I like at
[21:58] Speaker 3: this end, whenever I do ask show, I am like,
[22:01] Speaker 3: it's like it's an extension. It's not a four year
[22:04] Speaker 3: X contract. It say six year X contract. And therefore
[22:07] Speaker 3: he's actually only the seventh most well paid corner in
[22:10] Speaker 3: the market or whatever it might be.
[22:11] Speaker 1: Got to think about that, thanks for spreading the esoteric
[22:15] Speaker 1: gospel oh across the globe. Oh yeah, Jacoby Brissett is
[22:19] Speaker 1: looking for more money.
[22:20] Speaker 2: Do about six million dollars.
[22:23] Speaker 1: I don't know if we need to talk much about
[22:25] Speaker 1: this week hit that he is holding out, but he
[22:26] Speaker 1: is not showing up for OTAs and ESPN.
[22:30] Speaker 2: Their their local reporter.
[22:31] Speaker 1: They're reported that he's significantly far apart in contract talks.
[22:36] Speaker 1: So people keep making fun of this holdout. It is
[22:38] Speaker 1: having no signs of letting up. Let's go to what
[22:41] Speaker 1: I'm calling vic Fangio corner. A couple little items from
[22:46] Speaker 1: Vic Fango, who spoke.
[22:47] Speaker 2: To the media. Think he's what sixty seven years young now,
[22:51] Speaker 2: had just like a good football nugget, which is that
[22:53] Speaker 2: they're going to move Cooper de Gene back to safety
[22:57] Speaker 2: in base formations. That's that's what he was more commonly
[23:00] Speaker 2: as a rookie.
[23:01] Speaker 1: And then he's in the slot like he's when they're
[23:03] Speaker 1: in nickel, which is basically their main formation.
[23:06] Speaker 2: You know, he is going to be in the slots.
[23:07] Speaker 1: I don't think much changes, but they do not want
[23:10] Speaker 1: him to be playing outside cornerback. They have They have
[23:13] Speaker 1: Rek Woollen there now potentially in that spot. It's just
[23:17] Speaker 1: a little nugget. Let's actually listen to Vic Fangio too,
[23:21] Speaker 1: asked about the reports that he was potentially retiring this offseason.
[23:25] Speaker 6: No, I wasn't close. You know, I've had those thoughts,
[23:29] Speaker 6: you know, the last few years. Every year at the
[23:31] Speaker 6: end of the year, I just think about it, you know,
[23:33] Speaker 6: and I never really got serious to where I would
[23:37] Speaker 6: have done it. And you know, it's no different than
[23:42] Speaker 6: I did after twenty four season, after twenty three season.
[23:48] Speaker 6: I mean, I told the players the other day that,
[23:51] Speaker 6: you know, we had our annual physical we get physicals
[23:55] Speaker 6: as coaches, and the docs told me I was reverse
[23:57] Speaker 6: aging with my lab work and everything that came up.
[24:02] Speaker 6: So I told them, you guys are stuck with me
[24:04] Speaker 6: for a while long while.
[24:06] Speaker 2: I believe it. I don't know if it's the hat.
[24:08] Speaker 1: Jordan calls it hat fishing sometimes with yeah, yeah, without
[24:12] Speaker 1: a lot of hat. You know, here like Vic looking
[24:14] Speaker 1: young there in the baseball cap, which is great news.
[24:17] Speaker 2: For the Eagles.
[24:18] Speaker 3: It's not a lot of issues with the hair around
[24:21] Speaker 3: these parts. Greg of course, too fine heads of hair
[24:24] Speaker 3: on this podcast right now. Yeah, I mean if vangeistics
[24:28] Speaker 3: around there, then the Eagles have got a chance of
[24:30] Speaker 3: being a top defense again this season. And yeah, I
[24:33] Speaker 3: think we're all expecting, well or hoping that Jormnion will
[24:36] Speaker 3: offer something a bit different on offense and we'll see
[24:39] Speaker 3: a big jump. Like you know, last year, I was
[24:42] Speaker 3: there in Philly for that playoff game against the forty
[24:44] Speaker 3: nine ers. It turned ugly very quickly there, and I
[24:49] Speaker 3: don't think it's going to take a huge amount for
[24:51] Speaker 3: them to take a step back forward and be a
[24:52] Speaker 3: real contender again.
[24:53] Speaker 2: So not ugly for you.
[24:55] Speaker 1: You're a Niners fan trying to pretend that you were impartial?
[24:59] Speaker 2: How did that work?
[25:01] Speaker 3: I well, I mean not brilliantly, but I got away
[25:04] Speaker 3: with it. I think there is the video of the
[25:07] Speaker 3: final moments where I where I absolutely lose my mind.
[25:11] Speaker 4: I'm just doing the normal thing.
[25:12] Speaker 3: But you do see that there are some Niners team
[25:14] Speaker 3: representatives behind me who are actually properly high fiving and
[25:18] Speaker 3: you know, celebrating a win where I'm trying to at.
[25:21] Speaker 4: Least act a little bit professional.
[25:23] Speaker 3: The Kooper Degine things funny because I just think all
[25:25] Speaker 3: they're basically saying, is Cooper Degine's going to be on
[25:27] Speaker 3: the field no matter what. Yes, we're playing that's that's
[25:30] Speaker 3: basically it's like we're going to play him as a
[25:32] Speaker 3: safety because he's not coming off the field like just
[25:36] Speaker 3: I think they play, they'll play nickel. I won't surprise.
[25:38] Speaker 3: It's seventy five eighty percent at the time. But if
[25:41] Speaker 3: we go into base Cooper Cooper plays. That's as simple
[25:43] Speaker 3: as that.
[25:45] Speaker 1: I think his second season was underrated because you know,
[25:47] Speaker 1: that's a position we talk about is so volatile, and
[25:50] Speaker 1: yet he built on what he did as a rookie.
[25:55] Speaker 1: It's early days yet, but I mean there's there's a
[25:57] Speaker 1: chance he could get better and then we're starting to
[26:01] Speaker 1: get into when you look at the first three years
[26:03] Speaker 1: of his career, really special territory. So one of the
[26:06] Speaker 1: things I'm really excited about the Eagles. Another assistant coach
[26:12] Speaker 1: talking last week was over the weekend was Bear's QB
[26:16] Speaker 1: coach JT. Barrett, who said he wanted quote fewer quote
[26:21] Speaker 1: crazy plays from Caleb Williams, and I decided to use
[26:25] Speaker 1: this as a quick talker, and I know we got
[26:27] Speaker 1: to get you out of that hot room there, although
[26:30] Speaker 1: it's working. Yeah, like it's like thirty three degrees Celsius
[26:34] Speaker 1: over there, like it's mid nineties. It's crazy. You are
[26:37] Speaker 1: the second straight ginger beard on the show though, by
[26:40] Speaker 1: the way, after Chuck Klosterman, and I don't know how
[26:43] Speaker 1: you feel, like, do you feel threatened?
[26:45] Speaker 3: I feel in no way threatened because we're doing this
[26:48] Speaker 3: new studio. I'm also still wearing studio makeup and have
[26:51] Speaker 3: my head done by professionals, so I'm feeling maybe the.
[26:54] Speaker 4: Best I've ever felt. Greg.
[26:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, you do.
[26:56] Speaker 3: Look I've dropped some pounds. I'm feeling good, So no
[26:59] Speaker 3: threat will.
[26:59] Speaker 2: So us You do look great. I'm good. It's so great.
[27:02] Speaker 1: I got to sidetracked here from the quotes about Caleb Williams.
[27:05] Speaker 1: I wanted to bring him up because I really like Men,
[27:08] Speaker 1: a chime show featuring Lenny She had Ben Solek on.
[27:10] Speaker 1: Last week they did QB ringings. I told everyone go
[27:12] Speaker 1: check out in Nate Tyson's show Football three oh one
[27:15] Speaker 1: on Yahoo, I contributed with him and Bill Barnow. We
[27:17] Speaker 1: did the QB ranks, and I think Caleb Williams was
[27:19] Speaker 1: one of the most interesting conversations to have and his
[27:23] Speaker 1: assistant coach kind of talked about why he's a difficult
[27:25] Speaker 1: guy to talk about.
[27:26] Speaker 2: Here's some quotes from me.
[27:27] Speaker 1: He said, he's told Caleb Williams, my guy, I know,
[27:30] Speaker 1: you just made this crazy play that was really cool,
[27:33] Speaker 1: but we had a guy come open, wide open underneath that.
[27:36] Speaker 2: You just pop it. You pop it to him.
[27:39] Speaker 1: He does the running instead of Caleb, and now you're
[27:41] Speaker 1: not as tired. Later, Barrett said, we can be efficient
[27:45] Speaker 1: and take what the defense is giving. You don't necessarily
[27:48] Speaker 1: have to put the cape on and make those crazy
[27:50] Speaker 1: plays because you were already killing them in the first
[27:54] Speaker 1: three quarters. If you do that, and his stats really
[27:58] Speaker 1: reflect that. I'm curius of your thoughts of where Caleb
[28:02] Speaker 1: kind of fits in the landscape and this idea from
[28:05] Speaker 1: the coaching staff of they want him to be a
[28:08] Speaker 1: little more of a consistent, safer Caleb.
[28:11] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the dream, right.
[28:12] Speaker 3: It's if you don't need to lead six fourth quarter
[28:16] Speaker 3: comebacks in a season, if you're already winning games handily,
[28:20] Speaker 3: Like I think that's a fair comment.
[28:23] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[28:24] Speaker 3: The problem is is fans just love those moments, you know,
[28:28] Speaker 3: whether it's in the playoffs, whether it's those big comebacks
[28:31] Speaker 3: we had later in games through the season, and so yeah,
[28:34] Speaker 3: I don't want to lose that part of Caleb Williams.
[28:36] Speaker 4: It's what makes him a real joy.
[28:37] Speaker 3: And actually, I think, kind of versus a few other
[28:39] Speaker 3: guys in the league who are capable of those throws,
[28:41] Speaker 3: who are capable of making those those crazy plays, as
[28:45] Speaker 3: they say, I think he hits them at a higher
[28:46] Speaker 3: rate than a lot of guys. You know, love watching
[28:50] Speaker 3: Jordan Love play, but he didn't have a huge number
[28:52] Speaker 3: of fourth quarter comebacks last year because actually they missed
[28:55] Speaker 3: a lot of those moments. So yes, of course you
[28:59] Speaker 3: want to have him being out there, being sensible, throwing
[29:02] Speaker 3: the underneath throw, letting guys do their jobs.
[29:04] Speaker 4: But I don't know the.
[29:07] Speaker 3: Less purest more football fan wanting those huge moments. It's
[29:12] Speaker 3: not my quarterback, So yeah, let him go out there.
[29:14] Speaker 1: And well, yeah, I just think it's the balance, and
[29:18] Speaker 1: I think you hopefully keep getting those moments. I think
[29:21] Speaker 1: they're almost assuming those moments aren't going to go a
[29:24] Speaker 1: way completely. But it really hit me because they had
[29:27] Speaker 1: that first Packers Bears game on NFL Network last week
[29:32] Speaker 1: as I was prepping for that QB show, and you
[29:35] Speaker 1: kind of forget. Oh yeah, Caleb was having a miserable
[29:38] Speaker 1: game through fifty one minutes and then goes super nova
[29:45] Speaker 1: at the end of regulation in overtime, and you love that,
[29:47] Speaker 1: but you kind of are like, oh, there's all these
[29:49] Speaker 1: open receivers early and he's having a terrible game, and
[29:52] Speaker 1: then he saves it and that was the magic of it.
[29:54] Speaker 1: And it really is reflected in his numbers. He's so
[29:57] Speaker 1: bad in terms of completion percentage over expect did one
[30:00] Speaker 1: of the worst in the entire NFL, pretty bad in
[30:03] Speaker 1: success rate, and yet he absolutely deserved to be on
[30:08] Speaker 1: QB Island at the end of the season because QB
[30:10] Speaker 1: islan we're talking about who defined the position. He defined
[30:13] Speaker 1: the position because he made it happen when it mattered.
[30:16] Speaker 1: And I had a Packers fan getting at me at
[30:18] Speaker 1: the mention it's like, well, you didn't have Caleb Williams
[30:22] Speaker 1: on QB. You know you took like we took Jordan
[30:25] Speaker 1: Love on both those draft Like I had Jordan Love
[30:27] Speaker 1: ranked higher than Caleb Williams, but I didn't have him
[30:30] Speaker 1: on QB Island. But that was about how he played
[30:32] Speaker 1: last year. He's just a little more trustworthy of what
[30:35] Speaker 1: I'm going to get this year because I haven't seen
[30:37] Speaker 1: it from Caleb year after year, play after play.
[30:40] Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's exactly what I agree with. That's exactly
[30:43] Speaker 3: how I would say. I'd have Jordan Love ranked higher
[30:45] Speaker 3: when we've done ours as well. I think we alled
[30:47] Speaker 3: you to do ours in the coming weeks because we
[30:49] Speaker 3: don't want to do it too close to a night's
[30:51] Speaker 3: or mean, is there anyone else, just as people will
[30:53] Speaker 3: notice that we know less of what we're talking about.
[30:56] Speaker 3: It's easier to steal from thost people if you give
[30:58] Speaker 3: it a few weeks afterwards and repeat what they the
[31:01] Speaker 3: great stuff that they've said. But yeah, you mentioned it,
[31:03] Speaker 3: fifty eight point one percent completion percentage, you dropped down
[31:07] Speaker 3: to minus six point nine dpoe, which, as you mentioned
[31:11] Speaker 3: as well, like that's that's bad. But he was winning
[31:14] Speaker 3: games of football and took them to the playoffs. Think
[31:16] Speaker 3: a lot of Bears fans don't mind that necessarily, I
[31:18] Speaker 3: think in Ben Johnson's scheme. And it's another thing. A
[31:22] Speaker 3: lot of coach ranking has been going on this year,
[31:24] Speaker 3: and it's been amazing to see just how high like
[31:26] Speaker 3: he's being talked about as a top three, top four
[31:28] Speaker 3: guy in the League already after one year. If Ben
[31:32] Speaker 3: Johnson is the genius that everyone thinks he is, and
[31:34] Speaker 3: I'm on that same page as well, then I'd expect
[31:37] Speaker 3: the easy.
[31:38] Speaker 4: Button to get pushed more often.
[31:39] Speaker 3: For Haleb Williams, I'd expect those throws to come more often,
[31:42] Speaker 3: and I think those stats will grow and we'll see
[31:44] Speaker 3: maybe a little bit more sensible.
[31:46] Speaker 1: But I had him, i think twelfth on my personal
[31:49] Speaker 1: rankings in again, and I'm surprised that I was the
[31:55] Speaker 1: analyst that the wind up taken him in my draft
[31:58] Speaker 1: with Naton Bill and he thought the way to fourteenth,
[32:01] Speaker 1: which is interesting. Ben Solak and Mina do it over
[32:04] Speaker 1: the next three years and he, you know, Ben ends
[32:06] Speaker 1: up taking him eighth. That's a little bit different of
[32:07] Speaker 1: an exercise. We're just looking at next season specifically, but
[32:11] Speaker 1: it's interesting, you know, to see where he goes from here.
[32:14] Speaker 1: I think he's going to start hitting some of those
[32:16] Speaker 1: easy things. The Bears do not hit the easy thing
[32:19] Speaker 1: when it comes to the stadium. Just want to mention
[32:22] Speaker 1: our tenth point here is that the Bears have you know,
[32:25] Speaker 1: reiterated publicly, they've quote exhausted every available avenue of staying
[32:30] Speaker 1: in Chicago, and the stadium is either going to be
[32:33] Speaker 1: in Indiana or Arlington Heights, which is in Illinois. So
[32:36] Speaker 1: that's a thing that is apparently actually going to happen.
[32:41] Speaker 1: The Seahawks and Devin Witherspoon are working on a new contract,
[32:46] Speaker 1: according to ESPN, but reportedly far apart on numbers. Nothing
[32:52] Speaker 1: to worry about too much. He is someone who they
[32:54] Speaker 1: picked the fifth year option up. Be a little trickier,
[32:57] Speaker 1: but you know, Jackson Smith and Jigga gets the top
[33:00] Speaker 1: of the market, maybe the Seahcs aren't quite willing to
[33:02] Speaker 1: get to the very tippy top of the market yet.
[33:04] Speaker 1: With Devin Witherspoon, what have you thought about his kind
[33:07] Speaker 1: of development as a procest far?
[33:09] Speaker 3: Oh, he's a joy to watch, and you know, we
[33:11] Speaker 3: saw just how dominant he was through that playoff run.
[33:14] Speaker 3: But this is, you know, the when the Seahawks based
[33:19] Speaker 3: their whole off season when they had money and they
[33:22] Speaker 3: didn't have a lot of draft picks, but they elected
[33:24] Speaker 3: not to keep their own guys around in a lot
[33:26] Speaker 3: of cases, obviously the most obvious example of that being
[33:29] Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker, but a lot of their guys on the
[33:31] Speaker 3: back end and the past rush as well, they made
[33:33] Speaker 3: big choices to let the guys who had got them
[33:37] Speaker 3: to where they got go, and a lot of it
[33:38] Speaker 3: was based off these two extensions, off JSN and off
[33:41] Speaker 3: Devin Witherspoon. So I think Withtherspoon probably knows or his
[33:44] Speaker 3: agent knows more than that, that he is in a
[33:47] Speaker 3: pretty strong negotiating position here, and I expect when that
[33:50] Speaker 3: contract comes out, I would be surprised if he's not
[33:53] Speaker 3: the top paid corner in the NFL, at least until
[33:57] Speaker 3: the next guy gets paid. But you know, I think
[34:00] Speaker 3: you're a top ten guy at any position essentially when
[34:02] Speaker 3: your contract comes up, you almost expect to be the
[34:04] Speaker 3: number one when it comes to the contract because that's
[34:06] Speaker 3: just how it works with this increasing salary cap. Right,
[34:10] Speaker 3: if he gets top three money, top five money, he's
[34:13] Speaker 3: definitely in that conversation, So I'd say deserves it.
[34:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, he's more of a slot guy,
[34:19] Speaker 1: and it's like, can can a slot guy make as
[34:22] Speaker 1: much as as a Patrick?
[34:23] Speaker 2: Certain?
[34:23] Speaker 1: I bet that's what his agent is looking for. A
[34:27] Speaker 1: couple of other items here. Another offseason injury. The Texans
[34:30] Speaker 1: lost their linebacker EJ. Speed to a partially born quadricep.
[34:37] Speaker 1: They gave him seven point five million dollars guaranteed this
[34:40] Speaker 1: offseason on a two year deal. He's more of like
[34:42] Speaker 1: they're kind of super sub on at linebacker, maybe a
[34:46] Speaker 1: third linebacker and special teamer, but a guy they valued
[34:49] Speaker 1: enough to give that much money. He could return this season,
[34:53] Speaker 1: but that's a very serious injury.
[34:56] Speaker 2: PFT.
[34:57] Speaker 1: My old boss Mike Florio reported that, according to a source,
[35:01] Speaker 1: a eighteen game season is quote extremely unlikely for twenty
[35:06] Speaker 1: twenty seven. Yeah, yeah, I should hope. So that's next year.
[35:08] Speaker 1: But interesting that that's even out there because the NFL
[35:12] Speaker 1: hasn't put a date on next season's Super Bowl. But
[35:18] Speaker 1: as much as the NFL would maybe like to extend
[35:20] Speaker 1: the season, good news, I think for me and you
[35:23] Speaker 1: that it's not happening this early because if they do
[35:25] Speaker 1: add an eighteenth week, they're also going to add probably
[35:27] Speaker 1: another bye week, and that super Bowl is roughly like
[35:31] Speaker 1: February twenty seventh, something like that.
[35:33] Speaker 4: Well, it's it's it's a cumbination, right.
[35:36] Speaker 3: It's yes, an extra bye week, Yes, an extra game
[35:38] Speaker 3: week in a game as well, But do they bring
[35:41] Speaker 3: the season forward like I think they would love for
[35:44] Speaker 3: it to land, You know, this year you've got landing
[35:48] Speaker 3: on a holiday weekend? Right, which holidays in mid February.
[35:50] Speaker 3: Excuse my Britishness for forgetting President's Day?
[35:54] Speaker 2: How dare you are? Or or was it Valentine's Day?
[35:57] Speaker 3: That also sometimes when it literally lands, but more I
[36:01] Speaker 3: meant that the third Monday in February being presidents yes right?
[36:05] Speaker 1: So yes, also my birthday sometimes every once in a
[36:08] Speaker 1: while it is, you know, myself and Chris Westling and
[36:11] Speaker 1: Roger Goodell's birthday, So that would be fun for us.
[36:13] Speaker 3: What I think they'd really love to have happened is
[36:16] Speaker 3: that the opening weekend is on Labor Day weekend, the
[36:20] Speaker 3: super Bowl is on President's Day weekend. They can take
[36:23] Speaker 3: over holidays like they have done Christmas and Thanksgiving and
[36:26] Speaker 3: add games to Wednesdays and everything else. But I think
[36:30] Speaker 3: the big loss could end up being with all of these,
[36:33] Speaker 3: do you remove the Super Bowl by do you go
[36:36] Speaker 3: from Championship game to super Bowl the following weekend in
[36:39] Speaker 3: order to make the season work?
[36:40] Speaker 1: Don't hate it? In fact, I like it. Don't think
[36:44] Speaker 1: we need that week anymore. That week was sort of
[36:48] Speaker 1: built to drum up interest back in the day and
[36:52] Speaker 1: do all the media stuff that for the rest of
[36:56] Speaker 1: the time the America was not paying as close attention
[37:00] Speaker 1: into American football. They're paying attention now. Let's just use
[37:02] Speaker 1: that momentum. That week that's just dead and is the
[37:05] Speaker 1: senior ball week actually doesn't make much sense to me anymore.
[37:09] Speaker 1: It's not great for the players' bodies, but they you
[37:12] Speaker 1: know that's they get an extra bye week somewhere in
[37:15] Speaker 1: the season. It'd be good for our bodies.
[37:17] Speaker 3: If you move Opening Night to Tuesday, you send all
[37:20] Speaker 3: of us, you know, we all get a plane from
[37:22] Speaker 3: wherever the NFCNFC Championship game is together to the super
[37:26] Speaker 3: Bowl city. It'll be like a big, big migration across
[37:29] Speaker 3: And yeah, I think for me, if they want to
[37:33] Speaker 3: make it work, they might have to lose that because
[37:35] Speaker 3: two by weeks doesn't mean another thing. Though I've got
[37:37] Speaker 3: to represent and see. Eighteen games means another thing as well.
[37:39] Speaker 3: Flora has been bagging this for a while because of
[37:41] Speaker 3: that whole super Bowl date not been set yet. It's
[37:45] Speaker 3: all more international games. It's going to turn into a
[37:47] Speaker 3: sixteen game international season. I'm convinced that's.
[37:50] Speaker 2: Where it is gone, no doubt.
[37:52] Speaker 3: But I think I've seen the most backlash against an
[37:54] Speaker 3: international slate we've maybe ever seen, and I don't know
[37:57] Speaker 3: if you've talked about it, not in terms of the
[37:59] Speaker 3: quality of the slate, I mean pushed back from the
[38:01] Speaker 3: number of games and the amount that teams are going
[38:03] Speaker 3: out there. And it is interesting that I don't know
[38:07] Speaker 3: if you covered this bit of news on your show,
[38:09] Speaker 3: but they're One bit of international announcement that came out
[38:12] Speaker 3: of the owner's meetings is that teams can no longer
[38:16] Speaker 3: protect home games when they are playing international games. So
[38:19] Speaker 3: it used to be that you were able to pick
[38:21] Speaker 3: two home games and say you can't send those games abroad.
[38:24] Speaker 4: No more.
[38:25] Speaker 3: From next season, you will not be able to protect
[38:27] Speaker 3: those games. And so suddenly you know marquee matchups going abroad,
[38:30] Speaker 3: sixteen games a year. It's yeah, I'm basically gonna be
[38:35] Speaker 3: working full time as a commentator, so I'm.
[38:37] Speaker 4: Ready for it.
[38:37] Speaker 2: Good. I mean, people need to calm down.
[38:40] Speaker 1: There's seventeen regular season games. You can lose one, and
[38:44] Speaker 1: if it happens to be a good one, guess what.
[38:47] Speaker 1: You can still watch it on TV. It's better to
[38:49] Speaker 1: watch on TV than it is to go in person.
[38:52] Speaker 1: It's not like baseball, where I enjoyed, you know, a
[38:55] Speaker 1: beautiful sunset on Monday night, celebrating my Memorial Day as
[39:01] Speaker 1: my father in law is chanting Freddy, Freddy.
[39:05] Speaker 2: That's right.
[39:05] Speaker 1: I've completely turned into a Dodgers fan. The final item
[39:10] Speaker 1: on the news before we say goodbye is just a
[39:13] Speaker 1: quote from Clint Kubiak that I quite enjoyed talking about
[39:18] Speaker 1: brock Bower.
[39:19] Speaker 7: It's kind of a football robot in a good way.
[39:22] Speaker 7: He's a football robot from heaven. You know, he's a
[39:24] Speaker 7: Cadillac out there. We got to get the most out
[39:27] Speaker 7: of Brock. You know, whether wherever he goes. He's been
[39:30] Speaker 7: successful in college and high school, whatever, whoever's coached him.
[39:34] Speaker 7: So you know, I just can't say enough great things
[39:37] Speaker 7: about him. Love his work, ethic, He's a standard bear.
[39:40] Speaker 1: Not effusive at the podium, Clint Kubiak, but football robot
[39:44] Speaker 1: from heaven.
[39:45] Speaker 2: That's nice.
[39:46] Speaker 1: Then that's some nice wordplay, just odd too, and that
[39:50] Speaker 1: could stick. I might just call brock Bowers from now
[39:53] Speaker 1: on the football robot from Heaven.
[39:54] Speaker 4: I'm on board. I'm ready for it.
[39:56] Speaker 3: The new age of tight ends is upon us, and
[40:00] Speaker 3: brock Bauer could be the shining beacon at the top.
[40:02] Speaker 4: Of the Mountain.
[40:02] Speaker 1: I'm ready now he did make a mistake, you know,
[40:06] Speaker 1: that was clearly straight off the dome. You know, as
[40:08] Speaker 1: a writer, he immediately followed Clint, you know, Brock being
[40:12] Speaker 1: a football robot from heaven with that he's a Cadillac.
[40:15] Speaker 1: Well that's confusing, Like just just pick one now, now,
[40:19] Speaker 1: can't be you can't be a football robot from heaven
[40:23] Speaker 1: that is also a Cadillac. You could be driving a
[40:25] Speaker 1: Cadillac maybe as a transformer.
[40:28] Speaker 4: There you go, it's perfect.
[40:30] Speaker 2: I also like he's a standard bearer.
[40:32] Speaker 1: That's what will has become for this show and for
[40:38] Speaker 1: football internationally. So yeah, everyone check him out on Talk
[40:41] Speaker 1: Sport covering American football but also this summer and beyond
[40:47] Speaker 1: soccer better known as football everywhere else the s word
[40:50] Speaker 1: with with his buddy Master Tesfazian.
[40:55] Speaker 2: Appreciate you, well, we'll see it.
[40:56] Speaker 4: Appreciate you having me on.
[40:57] Speaker 3: This proves to all those people out there who thought
[41:00] Speaker 3: I wasn't going to still be doing the NFL. But
[41:01] Speaker 3: I'm still here. I'm still going to do it. That's
[41:05] Speaker 3: still my one true love.
[41:07] Speaker 1: You better be because I want to call that game
[41:09] Speaker 1: wherever they said me this year. It might be Munich.
[41:12] Speaker 1: We're we're we're looking at Munich, so possibly on to Munich.
[41:16] Speaker 1: Me will reliance the patriots.
[41:21] Speaker 4: Jamb Yeah, maybe we can convince them too.
[41:26] Speaker 2: We will be back in the studio.
[41:27] Speaker 1: Patrick Claiban will be there, big show, maybe another fun
[41:31] Speaker 1: surprise guest.
[41:32] Speaker 2: We're back to daily It's in the name. See you
[41:34] Speaker 2: next time.
