[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're reacting to one of
[0:07] Speaker 1: the biggest trades in NFL history live. Thanks for joining
[0:11] Speaker 1: us on YouTube. Thanks to everyone checking us out in
[0:14] Speaker 1: your ears. I have got the right man with me
[0:17] Speaker 1: on this Monday morning on the West Coast to react
[0:20] Speaker 1: to Miles garrett stunning trade to the Los Angeles Rams.
[0:25] Speaker 2: His name is Nick Schuk.
[0:27] Speaker 1: He's just a kid from Akron that just happens to
[0:30] Speaker 1: be the city where the Browns are right now holding
[0:36] Speaker 1: a charitable golf event for the Browns Foundation in which
[0:39] Speaker 1: Andrew Berry, the GM is literally answering questions as the
[0:43] Speaker 1: report comes out from Adam Schefter, Ian Rappaport and Tom Pellisero.
[0:49] Speaker 1: The deal is Garrett to the Rams for a first
[0:53] Speaker 1: round pick in twenty twenty seven and most importantly, Jared Verse,
[0:58] Speaker 1: the defensive rookie of the Year from just a year ago.
[1:02] Speaker 1: There are also draft pick considerations that have yet to
[1:05] Speaker 1: be negotiated, so we believe that more picks will be
[1:10] Speaker 1: going to the Cleveland Browns.
[1:13] Speaker 2: What a stunner.
[1:14] Speaker 1: We were in the middle of taping a different podcast
[1:16] Speaker 1: and this one's gonna be way better.
[1:18] Speaker 2: How does it feel to see.
[1:21] Speaker 1: Your Browns trade away the all time sack leader in
[1:25] Speaker 1: a single season immediately after setting that sack record.
[1:29] Speaker 3: Nick Well, I mean, I feel better prepared for this,
[1:32] Speaker 3: given that we just spent ten plus minutes talking about
[1:34] Speaker 3: the possibilities of this when it happened, talk about overexposure
[1:38] Speaker 3: for Andrew Barry. Terrible timing, but a great deal. I
[1:40] Speaker 3: think what is the initial reaction? It makes sense for
[1:44] Speaker 3: the Browns to part with Miles Garrett at this time,
[1:46] Speaker 3: given that their title window is nowhere near where like now,
[1:49] Speaker 3: and the Rams are going for it, and Miles Garrett
[1:52] Speaker 3: is not getting any younger, and I think the Brown's
[1:55] Speaker 3: got a good haul back. Jared Versus one of my
[1:56] Speaker 3: favorite players coming out of that draft class. I love
[1:58] Speaker 3: to watch them at Florida State. He's been a monster
[2:00] Speaker 3: with the Rams. And if there's any consolation that Browns
[2:04] Speaker 3: fans who are absolutely distraught over the loss of Miles
[2:07] Speaker 3: Garrett they can find any consolation, is the fact that
[2:09] Speaker 3: you have an immediate starting edge rusher who is going.
[2:11] Speaker 4: He's not Miles Garrett, but he's a damn good edge rusher.
[2:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is one of those big deals and I'm
[2:18] Speaker 1: racking my brain trying to come up with a historical precedent,
[2:21] Speaker 1: and I don't think there is one quite like this,
[2:24] Speaker 1: but you know, hit us up in the comments if
[2:27] Speaker 1: you can think of one. But this is a trade,
[2:29] Speaker 1: Immediately you think, well, who won the trade? You know,
[2:32] Speaker 1: not everyone has to win a trade. We might be
[2:34] Speaker 1: talking about in aj Brown trade that feels very fair
[2:37] Speaker 1: later this week. To me, this is a very good
[2:41] Speaker 1: haul for Miles Garrett, and yet it totally makes sense
[2:45] Speaker 1: for the Los Angeles Rams. Our Jordan Rodrieg, who's going
[2:49] Speaker 1: to be writing a piece for the Athletic Little Teaser here,
[2:55] Speaker 1: is reporting that this was in the works for weeks.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Ongoing conversations between the two teams. Hope to get more
[3:04] Speaker 1: information from Jordan. She's going to be joining the show
[3:06] Speaker 1: on Tuesday. Ian Rappaport indicated something similar, which is that
[3:12] Speaker 1: initially the Browns are saying Garrett was not available, but
[3:16] Speaker 1: the Rams were persistent. And I have to imagine getting
[3:20] Speaker 1: one of the best young pass rushers in the entire
[3:23] Speaker 1: NFL on a cost controlled contract has to be a
[3:27] Speaker 1: big factor. And the Browns, you know, we'll be looking
[3:29] Speaker 1: to extend Jared versus when he's eligible, but for now,
[3:32] Speaker 1: you got a guy that Ollie Connolly and I just
[3:35] Speaker 1: ranked in our top twelve edge rushers in the entire NFL.
[3:38] Speaker 1: People thought we had him too low. He could go
[3:40] Speaker 1: even higher than that, a very particular type of EDG rusher.
[3:43] Speaker 1: You obviously got him much cheaper. That's from the brown side.
[3:47] Speaker 1: I want to get into competation, I want to get
[3:48] Speaker 1: the money all that. But to me, the biggest story,
[3:51] Speaker 1: other than just the stunning nature of a reigning defensive
[3:54] Speaker 1: player they are getting traded, is that the Rams, Nick,
[3:57] Speaker 1: let's just talk about them go for it in a
[4:01] Speaker 1: way that you know, maybe no team has ever gone
[4:04] Speaker 1: for it in our time covering the league before. I mean,
[4:07] Speaker 1: they are winning now to the n degree, Matthew Stafford
[4:10] Speaker 1: at the very end of his career, you know, he's
[4:14] Speaker 1: talked about it, and now you add Miles Garrett with
[4:17] Speaker 1: guaranteed money into next year joining forces. Just what do
[4:21] Speaker 1: you think about the Rams and where this puts them
[4:24] Speaker 1: overall in the NFL and especially on defense.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Well, the first thing I think of is how despondent
[4:30] Speaker 3: Sean McVay was when they lost the NFC championship game
[4:33] Speaker 3: and how he truly felt like this was the team
[4:35] Speaker 3: to win the Super Bowl, and they didn't get it done.
[4:38] Speaker 3: Part of why they didn't get it done is they
[4:39] Speaker 3: couldn't get a stop on the road in Seattle in
[4:42] Speaker 3: the NFC title Game when they needed it most. How
[4:45] Speaker 3: do you address that? You go and trade for Trent McDuffie.
[4:48] Speaker 3: Then you go and trade future capital and a young
[4:51] Speaker 3: edge rusher for an upgrade and a proven, elite superstar
[4:54] Speaker 3: edge rusher in Miles Garrett. You signal to the rest
[4:57] Speaker 3: of the league, we are acting with intent. Believe our
[5:00] Speaker 3: window is now and we are not going to leave
[5:02] Speaker 3: any stone unturned in our pursuit of a championship. But Joe,
[5:06] Speaker 3: by the way, that Super Bowl played in our home stadium,
[5:09] Speaker 3: the same place we won our last Super Bowl. We're
[5:11] Speaker 3: going after it right now. We're going after it with
[5:13] Speaker 3: all the force possible.
[5:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's crazy because, look, Garrett is an older
[5:19] Speaker 1: player entering his thirties and everything, but he is coming
[5:21] Speaker 1: off his best season and you think about their defense now,
[5:24] Speaker 1: I do kind of want to just talk about like
[5:26] Speaker 1: the team that they have before getting to all the
[5:29] Speaker 1: draft capital and just what it means. And historically you
[5:33] Speaker 1: pair Miles Garrett with Jared versus old friend Brayden Fisk,
[5:37] Speaker 1: two very different types of players. You have Byron Young there,
[5:40] Speaker 1: who also was drafted in our top twenty five edge
[5:43] Speaker 1: rusher draft just a couple of weeks ago. You have
[5:47] Speaker 1: Kobe Turner as one of the best interior pass rushers
[5:51] Speaker 1: full stop in the entire NFL. And oh, by the way,
[5:55] Speaker 1: you have one of the best run stoffers in Puna Ford,
[5:58] Speaker 1: who completely transformed their defense for a coordinator. And Chris Shula,
[6:02] Speaker 1: who I think did a really good job. The big question,
[6:05] Speaker 1: you know last year and going into the offseason was
[6:07] Speaker 1: definitely in that secondary. But that's where you add not
[6:09] Speaker 1: only Trent McDuffie, as you mentioned, but Jalen Watson. You
[6:12] Speaker 1: get Quittin Lake back healthy. It is a crazy loaded defense.
[6:18] Speaker 1: It was a crazy loaded defense before you added Miles Garrett,
[6:21] Speaker 1: and I don't think you should forget that. Look, you're
[6:24] Speaker 1: losing Jared Verse, so he is a much more dynamic,
[6:28] Speaker 1: bendy pass rusher, whereas Jared Verse is a very specific
[6:33] Speaker 1: type of push the pocket. I'm gonna run you over,
[6:36] Speaker 1: I'm tougher than you. I'm not gonna necessarily win one
[6:39] Speaker 1: on one all the time, But I'm gonna be part
[6:41] Speaker 1: of a big pass rush plan. The Rams are great
[6:43] Speaker 1: at that, but now they have a guy who is
[6:46] Speaker 1: gonna attract attention. I mean, you've watched the Browns forever.
[6:50] Speaker 1: This has to be the best defensive line that Miles
[6:53] Speaker 1: Garrett's ever gotten to play.
[6:54] Speaker 4: Oh oh, without a doubt.
[6:55] Speaker 3: I mean I would go back a few years ago
[6:57] Speaker 3: when they were, you know, trying to pair him with
[6:58] Speaker 3: the number of different edge rushers, usually veterans one year
[7:01] Speaker 3: to the next. Who is it going to be to
[7:03] Speaker 3: line up opposite him? But this is, without a doubt,
[7:05] Speaker 3: the best situation overall, because you're not just leaning on
[7:08] Speaker 3: veterans and guys that are at or over thirty to
[7:11] Speaker 3: get the job done that are proven. You're leaning on
[7:13] Speaker 3: a group that is squarely in their prime and can
[7:15] Speaker 3: attack you from a number of different directions. And this
[7:17] Speaker 3: was a good front already, like you said, Jared Versus
[7:19] Speaker 3: a key part of that. But what makes it really
[7:21] Speaker 3: enticing for Miles Garrett's perspective is that the way you
[7:23] Speaker 3: just described it, it basically illustrates a situation which offenses
[7:28] Speaker 3: can't just dedicate a bunch of attention to Miles Garrett,
[7:31] Speaker 3: because not only can they get hit by a buyer
[7:33] Speaker 3: and young, not only could Braden Fist cause problems, they
[7:35] Speaker 3: can get hit from any direction. So Miles Garrett is
[7:38] Speaker 3: a guy who attracts double teams and chips more than
[7:40] Speaker 3: anybody in the NFL. Like it's just it's a commonality
[7:43] Speaker 3: with him. It's happened throughout the course of his career
[7:44] Speaker 3: and especially over the last three to five years. You
[7:47] Speaker 3: can't do that as often as you like when you're
[7:48] Speaker 3: facing the rest of this defense, which makes them that
[7:50] Speaker 3: much better, that much more dangerous, and that much more
[7:53] Speaker 3: effective in the biggest moments in the postseason where you
[7:56] Speaker 3: expect to be I'm telling you, man, there is nothing
[7:59] Speaker 3: like the the bittersweet taste of losing to your division
[8:02] Speaker 3: rival with a chance to go to the Super Bowl,
[8:04] Speaker 3: to then prompt you to go all in and say
[8:07] Speaker 3: we are not letting that happen again. And that's why
[8:10] Speaker 3: I think it's a great trade for both sides. And
[8:12] Speaker 3: it makes all the sense in the world for the
[8:13] Speaker 3: Rams go do that right now.
[8:15] Speaker 2: Wow.
[8:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, it reminds me so much, of course, of the
[8:17] Speaker 1: Jalen Ramsey trade, which helped put them over the top.
[8:21] Speaker 1: It reminds me somewhat of them acquiring Odell Beckham, who
[8:25] Speaker 1: will get to very briefly at the end of this show,
[8:27] Speaker 1: who's back in the NFL with the New York Giants.
[8:30] Speaker 1: And when you think about it, you just think, if
[8:34] Speaker 1: you're a Rams fan, you just love that they go
[8:37] Speaker 1: for it, and yeah, multiple things can be true. They
[8:39] Speaker 1: also drafted Tysimpson in the first round. That's I think
[8:43] Speaker 1: still a confounding pick. This trade doesn't rage that to me.
[8:47] Speaker 1: I think this offense would look, you know, even better
[8:50] Speaker 1: with Omer Cooper junior or you know, insert wide receiver here.
[8:54] Speaker 1: I would have liked Casey concept you like. I think
[8:56] Speaker 1: if you're going all in like that would have been
[8:58] Speaker 1: great too. But you kind of had your case and
[9:00] Speaker 1: you're able to eat it too. And I want to
[9:02] Speaker 1: give Sneid and McVeigh credit because they always tend to
[9:06] Speaker 1: do this and there's this feeling that they're gonna win now.
[9:09] Speaker 1: And yes, they had that quote unquote Sprint rebuild where
[9:12] Speaker 1: they did take a step back and it all went
[9:14] Speaker 1: sour a little bit after their Super Bowl victory, but
[9:17] Speaker 1: they were competitive in that Sprint rebuild season. They end
[9:20] Speaker 1: up making, you know, having a winning record and everything,
[9:22] Speaker 1: and everyone's gonna say, like this, it's now or never
[9:26] Speaker 1: for the Rams, but they actually are set up quite.
[9:28] Speaker 2: Well long term.
[9:29] Speaker 1: They don't have crazy salary cap responsibilities. And if you
[9:33] Speaker 1: think about it in a way, it sort of makes sense.
[9:36] Speaker 1: Because you're paying Miles Garrett an incredible amount this year
[9:39] Speaker 1: and next year, you were going to have to pay
[9:42] Speaker 1: Jared Verse. Starting either next year or the year after that,
[9:46] Speaker 1: you were going to have to pay Kobe Turner. I
[9:49] Speaker 1: don't know if they would have had to choose between
[9:51] Speaker 1: one of those two, but it would have been trickier
[9:53] Speaker 1: to sign both of those two. Now it's like, okay,
[9:55] Speaker 1: it kind of frees up Kobe Turner's more of our
[9:57] Speaker 1: long term guy. Miles Garrett's here for the next couple
[10:00] Speaker 1: of years. And it reminds me, you know, a little
[10:03] Speaker 1: bit of that Von Miller trade as well, which they
[10:05] Speaker 1: gave up a lot for well ended up being a
[10:08] Speaker 1: half season of Von Miller essentially, but it did get
[10:11] Speaker 1: them over the line. So many of the biggest trades
[10:15] Speaker 1: shook in NFL history. When I was looking for comps,
[10:18] Speaker 1: I'm going through it. We're literally made by less need
[10:21] Speaker 1: you know, it's like Von Miller, Matthew Stafford, Like how
[10:26] Speaker 1: much you know Jalen Ramsey. You can throw Tret McDuffie.
[10:29] Speaker 1: Now we're getting much lower on the list. But in
[10:32] Speaker 1: terms of guys really at the top of the league,
[10:36] Speaker 1: and they were in on the AJ Brown discussions earlier
[10:39] Speaker 1: this offseason, there actually aren't that many great examples of
[10:42] Speaker 1: guys who are really at the top of their level
[10:44] Speaker 1: and getting traded like this unless Ann Sean McVay are
[10:48] Speaker 1: just willing to go for it.
[10:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, what's the most important part of all of that
[10:52] Speaker 3: is you have Matthew Stafford right now. You have Matthew
[10:55] Speaker 3: Stafford on a contract that is going to require you
[10:57] Speaker 3: to make decisions in tandem with Matthew Stafford in each
[10:59] Speaker 3: of the next two off seasons.
[11:01] Speaker 4: There is no tomorrow.
[11:03] Speaker 3: Essentially, Yeah, you drafted Tie Senson for the future, But like,
[11:05] Speaker 3: if you're going to maximize what you have right now,
[11:07] Speaker 3: which is a team that is very good, it was
[11:08] Speaker 3: very close to making the Super Bowl, you have to
[11:10] Speaker 3: do it right now, which is why you give up
[11:12] Speaker 3: a younger piece on your defense for a guy that's
[11:14] Speaker 3: proven established in the peak of his career.
[11:16] Speaker 4: And it makes all the sense in the world.
[11:18] Speaker 3: And it also, yeah, like everyone's gonna say it's less
[11:20] Speaker 3: need FM picks, like that's what he does. But there's
[11:23] Speaker 3: it makes perfect logical sense to do it right now
[11:26] Speaker 3: because you have to capitalize right There is no guarantee
[11:30] Speaker 3: that you're ever going to have this opportunity even next year,
[11:33] Speaker 3: so you got to do it while you got it
[11:34] Speaker 3: right now.
[11:35] Speaker 1: Now, you know, Look, there's a scenario where you know,
[11:38] Speaker 1: the back injury Matthew Stafford, yes, wasn't feeling too great
[11:41] Speaker 1: about happened six games into this season, and it's strange.
[11:45] Speaker 1: But then then you have a group that more will
[11:47] Speaker 1: you know, more ready to take the load and help
[11:51] Speaker 1: Tie Simpson here.
[11:52] Speaker 2: I I have seen.
[11:53] Speaker 1: You know, I'm looking at our comments and so many
[11:55] Speaker 1: of them are like angry and how are the Browns
[11:59] Speaker 1: so dumb? I don't think they're dumb. I think this
[12:02] Speaker 1: was a good move for them. We'll get to that
[12:04] Speaker 1: and in a second, but I did want to just
[12:06] Speaker 1: say before we move off, like the Rams strategy of
[12:09] Speaker 1: it all, the only reason they can make this trade
[12:12] Speaker 1: is because they made the first pick, because they drafted
[12:16] Speaker 1: so well, because Byron Young is one of the most
[12:19] Speaker 1: productive third round defensive linemen that have been taken in
[12:22] Speaker 1: the last five years, because Kobe Turner is one of
[12:25] Speaker 1: the most productive. When was he taken second third, you know,
[12:31] Speaker 1: like mid round pick. He was a third round pick
[12:33] Speaker 1: as well. Braden Fisk is a solid second round pick.
[12:36] Speaker 1: The only way that they make this work is that
[12:37] Speaker 1: they've been able to develop guys in their back end
[12:40] Speaker 1: and that they go a little cheap on the offensive line.
[12:42] Speaker 1: This is not some moneyball scheme where they're just outspending everyone,
[12:47] Speaker 1: like like the Dodgers or something like that. Like everyone's
[12:50] Speaker 1: playing by the same rules and they're not spending in
[12:52] Speaker 1: particular way more cash than other teams. They're just smart
[12:56] Speaker 1: about how they're getting it done, and they're now benefiting
[12:59] Speaker 1: by halving such an incredible asset.
[13:02] Speaker 2: To use an NBA term, I always hate that.
[13:04] Speaker 1: I don't want to use it again, but Jared Verse
[13:07] Speaker 1: on this contract is an awesome pull. I'm really curious
[13:11] Speaker 1: to see what the other draft picks that they get are,
[13:13] Speaker 1: because you know, a twenty twenty you know, seven late
[13:17] Speaker 1: round pick, I mean late first round pick plus Verse, Like,
[13:20] Speaker 1: it's not a ton of draft I don't know what
[13:23] Speaker 1: the other draft picks are gonna be but like you
[13:25] Speaker 1: have to expect, that's a bottom five in the first
[13:27] Speaker 1: round pick that the Browns get, but you also get
[13:32] Speaker 1: a guy that's going to be part of your future
[13:34] Speaker 1: when you hope you are ready to win some meame.
[13:36] Speaker 3: And that's what makes it a good deal for both
[13:39] Speaker 3: sides because look, I can speak from the perspective of Cleveland,
[13:43] Speaker 3: they are very much used to their teams trading away
[13:45] Speaker 3: players at their peak when a contract is up, which
[13:48] Speaker 3: is not the situation with Miles Garrett. They already paid
[13:50] Speaker 3: in but when it usually contract is up. Usually the
[13:52] Speaker 3: baseball team does this and they get prospects, so they
[13:55] Speaker 3: get picks, they get future investments that may or may
[13:57] Speaker 3: not pan out. It depends on whether the front office
[13:59] Speaker 3: is going to draft well than using those picks. Right,
[14:01] Speaker 3: this situation is perfect because you replace yes, Miles Garrett,
[14:06] Speaker 3: who is one of one.
[14:07] Speaker 4: You're not going to find another Miles Garrett, but.
[14:09] Speaker 3: You replace him with a really good edge rusher who
[14:11] Speaker 3: is young, who is on his rookie deal for two
[14:14] Speaker 3: more years, could have the fifth year option, never gonna
[14:16] Speaker 3: getre because they're going to extend him. And you also
[14:19] Speaker 3: get the capital to invest you know next year and
[14:21] Speaker 3: whatever else capital that they get is they're finalizing the
[14:23] Speaker 3: terms of this deal. So while everybody gets upset about it,
[14:26] Speaker 3: and understand there's a lot of you know, sports emotional
[14:29] Speaker 3: trauma that comes with watching your favorite star players get
[14:31] Speaker 3: rid of, you know, leave Cleveland and you have to
[14:33] Speaker 3: get rid of the jersey or put in them off balls.
[14:35] Speaker 3: This works out for them. Andrew Barry couldn't have done
[14:38] Speaker 3: much better. And I like the way Ian Rapport described
[14:40] Speaker 3: it on social media, which is that you said the
[14:43] Speaker 3: Browns were adamant about not trading him. Understandably so, but
[14:46] Speaker 3: because the Rams were persistent and then included Jared Verse,
[14:50] Speaker 3: then it became a real thing because then you can
[14:52] Speaker 3: continue to build toward the future and you're not giving
[14:55] Speaker 3: up a massive hole right now with nothing in return
[14:58] Speaker 3: other than picks.
[15:00] Speaker 1: Taking some questions from the viewers watching right now, one asked,
[15:04] Speaker 1: anyone feel kind of bad for Verse? Yes, while we
[15:06] Speaker 1: were waiting to start this show, that was one of
[15:09] Speaker 1: my immediate reactions. Nice guy, great situation here, loves being
[15:14] Speaker 1: on the Rams and he's going to a rebuilding team
[15:17] Speaker 1: where Look, I was kind of thinking when this Miles
[15:21] Speaker 1: Garrett trade smoke was popping up that you know, if
[15:24] Speaker 1: they traded Miles Garrett Man, that's one of the worst
[15:26] Speaker 1: edge groups in the league. And you said, you said
[15:29] Speaker 1: justice for Alex Right. Alex writes a good young player.
[15:31] Speaker 1: It's kind of interesting to think about Alex Right actually
[15:34] Speaker 1: getting a new contract earlier this.
[15:37] Speaker 2: Offseason, right or was it league last season?
[15:39] Speaker 1: And now thinking about that they locked him in at
[15:41] Speaker 1: a pretty affordable rate and could they have known that
[15:45] Speaker 1: this was potentially coming. Maybe, But yes, it's a tough
[15:50] Speaker 1: one for Jared Verse. I'm sorry, sorry for the city
[15:54] Speaker 1: of Cleveland, but it is tough to get traded from
[15:57] Speaker 1: a potential contender as someone who has made the La
[16:01] Speaker 1: to Cleveland move.
[16:02] Speaker 2: You know, it's not great.
[16:05] Speaker 3: No, I'm going we're trying back and forth both yes, look, okay, so.
[16:09] Speaker 1: We're trying to get shook you back in a big trade.
[16:11] Speaker 1: That would be a big NFL Daily trade that we
[16:14] Speaker 1: would have to announce.
[16:15] Speaker 4: It would, but we're not ready to announce that yet. Look.
[16:17] Speaker 3: I had this thought because we've had great weather in
[16:20] Speaker 3: Cleveland this week. It's sunny outside right now, it's gonna
[16:22] Speaker 3: be warm. I thought, Man, it's really great here. When
[16:25] Speaker 3: the weather's good, and then I think like, ah, but
[16:27] Speaker 3: there's a six months of the year where it's gray
[16:29] Speaker 3: and cold and gross.
[16:31] Speaker 1: That's what Jared Versus gonna have to get to know.
[16:33] Speaker 1: Now they're going to have a new stadium. I feel
[16:38] Speaker 1: like the Andrew Berry era is, you know, verging on
[16:42] Speaker 1: a Ponzi scheme that just kicks the can into the
[16:45] Speaker 1: future further and further in a way to just keep
[16:48] Speaker 1: his job. But I say that all with a tongue
[16:53] Speaker 1: in my cheek to point out that Jared Versus going
[16:56] Speaker 1: to get paid by the Browns. It would be a catastrophe.
[17:00] Speaker 1: If you don't get him paid. He won't have a
[17:02] Speaker 1: fifth year option, so he'll be eligible for a contract
[17:04] Speaker 1: after this season. It's not something that's going to happen
[17:06] Speaker 1: this season, but I would imagine that's going to be
[17:09] Speaker 1: a priority.
[17:10] Speaker 2: You think about their young core.
[17:14] Speaker 1: We love the draft class that they had a year
[17:16] Speaker 1: ago with quinch On Jugkins, with Carson Schwessinger, with Harold Fannin.
[17:21] Speaker 1: You know, these are not positions that you normally pay
[17:25] Speaker 1: top of the market money to, but they could be
[17:28] Speaker 1: among the best players at their position. On paper, this
[17:31] Speaker 1: draft looks promising. I mentioned concepci Own earlier. I really
[17:34] Speaker 1: like him. You have a top ten tackle in Spencer Fano.
[17:38] Speaker 1: You are building a group with you know, McNeil, Warren,
[17:41] Speaker 1: whoever else it's going to be. You hope that Mason
[17:43] Speaker 1: Graham turns into a difference maker. Probably worst case scenario,
[17:46] Speaker 1: he is a solid defensive you know, tackle for you
[17:49] Speaker 1: last year, and you have the makings minus the quarterback
[17:53] Speaker 1: situation of a promising young core. And that does get
[17:58] Speaker 1: me thinking, this just gives them another quote unquote asset
[18:03] Speaker 1: with that first round pick, shook the potentially maneuver to
[18:07] Speaker 1: get that quarterback in next year's draft.
[18:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, because if you win seven games, for example,
[18:14] Speaker 3: this year, you're not going to be in the running
[18:16] Speaker 3: for one of these quarterbacks in this draft, which again
[18:18] Speaker 3: we do this every year, but this is the class
[18:20] Speaker 3: to get ready for. Just wait, and it is actually
[18:22] Speaker 3: going to be a very loaded class. But yeah, you're right,
[18:25] Speaker 3: it's the capital to move. It's positioning your seven teams generous.
[18:28] Speaker 3: I know they have a pretty easy schedule, but it feels.
[18:31] Speaker 4: Oh no, that was that was the top end. I
[18:33] Speaker 4: was putting them at the top end there.
[18:34] Speaker 3: They won five games last year, and they were downright
[18:36] Speaker 3: terrible for most of the year, so it is possible.
[18:40] Speaker 3: But either way, you're going to need to be able
[18:42] Speaker 3: to maneuver in one direction, and that's up the board
[18:45] Speaker 3: if you want to get that quarterback if what they
[18:46] Speaker 3: have now doesn't work out, which is not going to.
[18:48] Speaker 3: So you're positioning yourself for look soft landing on moving
[18:52] Speaker 3: on from a franchise legend and a future Hall of Famer,
[18:54] Speaker 3: and you're also giving yourself a flexibility to continue to
[18:56] Speaker 3: improve this roster. You're right, I mean, look, Rounds fans
[18:59] Speaker 3: an't going to like the short term. Everybody wants instant gratification.
[19:01] Speaker 3: I understand that. But if you actually look at this
[19:03] Speaker 3: team in the way that they've kind of built, if
[19:05] Speaker 3: this draft class pans out, and yeah, you make a
[19:07] Speaker 3: great point that this could be, you know, the start
[19:09] Speaker 3: of a turnaround for this team after a few really
[19:12] Speaker 3: tough years.
[19:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, I am seeing such divergent opinions, which I think
[19:16] Speaker 1: indicates it's a fair trade. Where some analysts and Browns
[19:20] Speaker 1: fans are thinking, it's amazing we got Verse and this
[19:23] Speaker 1: is a is a really good player. It's a fair deal,
[19:25] Speaker 1: and other people, you know, like, why would they allow
[19:27] Speaker 1: this to happen. I would much rather have Jared Verse
[19:33] Speaker 1: than a pick. Yes, one pick is great, but I
[19:37] Speaker 1: would much rather have, especially a Rams pick. But even
[19:40] Speaker 1: if you told me like it was another maybe not
[19:44] Speaker 1: the Browns, but it was another, like a mid to
[19:46] Speaker 1: bad pick, I would rather have Jared Verse than that.
[19:50] Speaker 1: Because it is harder to find great players than it
[19:53] Speaker 1: is to find picks, which is why I tongue in
[19:56] Speaker 1: cheek call this a Ponzi scheme. You got to be
[19:58] Speaker 1: able to hit on those pick now, Barry did a
[20:01] Speaker 1: year ago. We'll see if this draft looks as good
[20:04] Speaker 1: on the field as it does on paper. We'll see
[20:07] Speaker 1: if the offensive line that they put together with just
[20:10] Speaker 1: all new players is gonna be good enough for them
[20:13] Speaker 1: to win let's say five or six games. There's also
[20:16] Speaker 1: a scenario where they're absolutely terrible this year, and I
[20:19] Speaker 1: think if you're a Browns fan, you then can at
[20:23] Speaker 1: least take comfort in seeing the vision the Rams. On
[20:26] Speaker 1: the other hand, man, it's pretty rare in the NFL
[20:31] Speaker 1: because it's just such a hard league to win that
[20:34] Speaker 1: at Super Bowl or bust. But look, if they lose
[20:38] Speaker 1: in the NFC Championship game, shook like they're just gonna
[20:41] Speaker 1: feel like, well, why do you know, I'm glad we
[20:44] Speaker 1: went for it, but anything short of getting there this
[20:48] Speaker 1: year is going to be really disappointing. Do you see
[20:52] Speaker 1: them as a significant favorite over the NFC right now?
[20:57] Speaker 3: I don't know if I would say significant, because it's
[20:58] Speaker 3: really hard to get the job done because they have
[21:00] Speaker 3: to stay healthy and they're in a very tough division.
[21:02] Speaker 3: They're also in a division with the Ranning Super Bowl
[21:04] Speaker 3: champions who did have some departures on defense but are
[21:07] Speaker 3: still good, you know, need to be taken very seriously.
[21:09] Speaker 4: I will say that they will be a favorite of sorts.
[21:12] Speaker 3: They will be one of the trendy picks to win
[21:14] Speaker 3: the NFC, and you could probably count me among them. Now,
[21:17] Speaker 3: I think back to what was it twenty twelve, the
[21:20] Speaker 3: Eagles dream team, and how everybody got on board with
[21:22] Speaker 3: that team and they were not good.
[21:24] Speaker 4: This is not that situation.
[21:25] Speaker 1: There were a lot of funny thing back on because
[21:27] Speaker 1: it was like, well, they signed Vince Young, n they
[21:31] Speaker 1: basically just signed to a good team.
[21:34] Speaker 3: Yeah, Like, this is not that situation. I think the
[21:36] Speaker 3: Ram's gonna be very good football team provided to stay healthy.
[21:39] Speaker 3: And again this is you have to do this now
[21:41] Speaker 3: because you get out the scenario where they fall short,
[21:43] Speaker 3: they don't make the super Bowl, right, and it's like, oh, well,
[21:46] Speaker 3: now we have one less year to do it. We
[21:47] Speaker 3: might only have two, so you got to get it done.
[21:50] Speaker 3: I think that they'll be well prepared, another well built
[21:53] Speaker 3: to do it.
[21:54] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:54] Speaker 1: I think they are the favorites. They will be the favorites,
[21:59] Speaker 1: you know in Vegas, no question. I think with everything
[22:03] Speaker 1: we know, they are the most likely team to make
[22:06] Speaker 1: the Super Bowl from the NFC, and they're the most
[22:08] Speaker 1: likely team to win a super Bowl. The problem, and
[22:11] Speaker 1: this is tough to explain to, for instance, my daughter
[22:14] Speaker 1: who's a Rams fan, or just in general to have
[22:16] Speaker 1: this concept that like, yeah, the favorite has maybe a
[22:21] Speaker 1: fifteen to twenty percent chance to win.
[22:23] Speaker 4: This yp.
[22:25] Speaker 1: Like, yes, they're the favorite, but even just to make
[22:28] Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. I am absolutely taking the field over
[22:31] Speaker 1: the Rams because the field includes an Eagles team which
[22:36] Speaker 1: has a lot going for it that the field includes
[22:38] Speaker 1: the Seahawks, who are the defending champions and look great,
[22:44] Speaker 1: a team in San Francisco who is very much built
[22:47] Speaker 1: to win now too, and the entire freaking NFC North who,
[22:50] Speaker 1: like could get you on a playoff Sunday.
[22:54] Speaker 2: So I would take the Rams.
[22:56] Speaker 1: And yet, if you gave me, like, can I get
[22:58] Speaker 1: two other teams, I'm probably even taking just two other teams,
[23:01] Speaker 1: if you gave me the Seahawks and the forty nine
[23:04] Speaker 1: ers or the Seahawks and the Eagles, Like, I'm probably
[23:06] Speaker 1: taking those two teams even.
[23:07] Speaker 2: But that's that's the.
[23:09] Speaker 1: Business that we're in, and the point is to have
[23:12] Speaker 1: a parade, and the Rams are going for that, and
[23:15] Speaker 1: I think that's all you can ask for.
[23:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
[23:18] Speaker 3: Actually I was thinking about what teams would I take
[23:20] Speaker 3: over the Rams, and I would throw the Cowboys in
[23:22] Speaker 3: there as one of the teams I might take, just because.
[23:24] Speaker 4: I think they're going to have a bit of a
[23:26] Speaker 4: resurgence here.
[23:27] Speaker 2: Then if you're taking two teams, you're saying or.
[23:29] Speaker 3: Three, taking two teams, not just the Cowboys. I'm taking
[23:31] Speaker 3: two or three teams, not quite the full field. But
[23:33] Speaker 3: I would throw the Cowboys in there, because that's how
[23:35] Speaker 3: hard it is to get it done. It's as simple
[23:37] Speaker 3: as that. I mean, they were our favorite to make
[23:38] Speaker 3: the Super Bowl basically until they lost that game in
[23:41] Speaker 3: Seattle last year, and even then it was really hard
[23:43] Speaker 3: to not lean toward them as the team you expected
[23:47] Speaker 3: to make the Super Bowl. So yeah, it's look, it's
[23:49] Speaker 3: tough to win this league, but again, they are stocking
[23:52] Speaker 3: themselves as best as possible to get it done.
[23:55] Speaker 1: Andrew Berry has had one of the most surprising glow
[24:00] Speaker 1: ups in terms of public perception over the last year
[24:05] Speaker 1: of any maligned executive. I can think so, I can
[24:08] Speaker 1: think of it. I don't forgive him for everything he did,
[24:11] Speaker 1: all the dead cap that they have on their salary
[24:14] Speaker 1: this year that we talked about in the episode That
[24:17] Speaker 1: Will Never Be Heard Shook.
[24:19] Speaker 3: I would love to I would love to parse out
[24:21] Speaker 3: the moment we found out about this trade, though we're
[24:24] Speaker 3: oh my god.
[24:25] Speaker 1: We're fifteen minutes into an episode where we already spent
[24:28] Speaker 1: about ten on Miles Garrett because it started to feel
[24:31] Speaker 1: like this thing was potentially real and we just wanted
[24:34] Speaker 1: to speculate. But yeah, it's it's a team that is
[24:38] Speaker 1: okay giving up the cap hit that they have in
[24:41] Speaker 1: terms of dead cap, in terms of this trade. If
[24:43] Speaker 1: you want to explain, let's let's let's break this down.
[24:46] Speaker 1: We haven't we haven't done this yet. Miles Garrett is
[24:49] Speaker 1: do a fully guaranteed salary this year. Most of his salary.
[24:54] Speaker 1: I believe twenty nine or thirty million dollars next year
[24:58] Speaker 1: of his forty one million dollar is guaranteed very early.
[25:02] Speaker 1: So ultimately that's going to be guaranteed. He's making forty
[25:05] Speaker 1: one million dollars next year. So if you're the Rams
[25:08] Speaker 1: and you're curious, you're a fan or just wondering your
[25:10] Speaker 1: Seahawks fan who wants this all to end as quickly
[25:12] Speaker 1: as possible, it's probably a minimum two year deal for
[25:16] Speaker 1: Miles Garrett in LA and we'll see, like he has
[25:20] Speaker 1: to be playing at a high level to continue on
[25:23] Speaker 1: after that. For the Browns, they constructed this contract for
[25:28] Speaker 1: thirty year old Miles Garrett at the time. Miles Garrett
[25:31] Speaker 1: who said from Cleveland to Canton, you know, after he
[25:34] Speaker 1: signed that deal, turned out it's going to be Cleveland
[25:37] Speaker 1: to Inglewood. He ends up getting one year and that
[25:41] Speaker 1: the trade doesn't really hit them too hard in terms
[25:44] Speaker 1: of a cap hit. So I believe they have twenty
[25:47] Speaker 1: six million dollars in dead cap that will be split
[25:51] Speaker 1: over two seasons for what the Browns have eaten in
[25:56] Speaker 1: terms of dead cap. You you did the math where
[25:59] Speaker 1: it's over forty plus million dollars in offensive linemen this
[26:02] Speaker 1: year alone in debt dead cap players that are not
[26:06] Speaker 1: Miles Garrett, Joel Buttonio Wyatt Teller, like guys who even
[26:10] Speaker 1: finished the end of their contract, but they had to
[26:12] Speaker 1: like move money around because Deshaun Watson's contract is so
[26:15] Speaker 1: onerous and by the way, they'll be taking some deadcat
[26:17] Speaker 1: cap on that when he is finally no longer eight
[26:22] Speaker 1: oh my god, void years. Like it is actually not
[26:24] Speaker 1: much of a hit, and they actually save cap space
[26:27] Speaker 1: this year if you really care about that, and you
[26:29] Speaker 1: get you save a ton of cap space next year
[26:31] Speaker 1: because that salary is not there. It will, you know,
[26:34] Speaker 1: create you know, a situation for the Rams where they
[26:37] Speaker 1: will have to make some decisions. But like I said,
[26:39] Speaker 1: it's almost like replacing Miles Garrett next year with giving
[26:43] Speaker 1: of Jared Vers long term contract next year. So from
[26:47] Speaker 1: a financial side of it, it kind of makes sense
[26:49] Speaker 1: for the Browns.
[26:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, it does.
[26:51] Speaker 3: You get an affordable player, you don't have the worst
[26:54] Speaker 3: cap hit and moving on for Miles Garrett again, you
[26:56] Speaker 3: get the asset and you get the I use the
[26:58] Speaker 3: term now too, asset first round pick, not player, but
[27:00] Speaker 3: first round pick next year and whatever draft consideration you
[27:03] Speaker 3: get as well.
[27:03] Speaker 4: I look, man, it's I.
[27:05] Speaker 3: Think we're actually in a weird era in which we've
[27:08] Speaker 3: seen a healthy amount of trades that were pretty even
[27:12] Speaker 3: in like the last year or so. This one, I
[27:15] Speaker 3: think is going to years from now looks pretty even
[27:18] Speaker 3: even in hindsight.
[27:20] Speaker 2: Okay, I think.
[27:21] Speaker 1: Look, there's a lot of pressure on Miles Garrett now
[27:24] Speaker 1: to stay at this level. There is every reason to
[27:27] Speaker 1: believe that he will because he's coming off one of
[27:29] Speaker 1: his best seasons. You know, it didn't have His pressure
[27:32] Speaker 1: to sack ratio was absolutely insane. Actual total pressures were
[27:36] Speaker 1: down slightly. Then again, he's forcing a fumble on rundowns
[27:40] Speaker 1: like every other play. It felt like like he's as
[27:42] Speaker 1: good a run defenders as he's ever been in his career.
[27:45] Speaker 2: He is absolutely one of one.
[27:49] Speaker 1: You know, I ranked the best twenty five players in
[27:52] Speaker 1: the last twenty five years, and Miles Garrett is steadily
[27:55] Speaker 1: moving up that list. I think he's going to be
[27:57] Speaker 1: in the top ten soon. But he's got to perform
[28:00] Speaker 1: at an extraordinarily high level to make this worth it shook.
[28:05] Speaker 2: I believe that he will.
[28:06] Speaker 1: In the difference, I think it comes to a stat
[28:09] Speaker 1: that I see from Hayden Winks from Underdog, who notes
[28:11] Speaker 1: that the sack percentage and kind of epa per drop
[28:15] Speaker 1: back for the Rams defense Nick last year on just
[28:19] Speaker 1: regular four man rushes was very average. It wasn't bad,
[28:25] Speaker 1: but it was average when they weren't sending extra rushers.
[28:29] Speaker 1: They were a team that pressured well. They were a
[28:33] Speaker 1: team that weren't horrible, but in the end they were
[28:38] Speaker 1: a little disappointing if they didn't send extra heat. They
[28:42] Speaker 1: were kind of an average defense because they did not
[28:44] Speaker 1: have a great secondary yep, and they didn't get home
[28:47] Speaker 1: fast enough.
[28:48] Speaker 2: Versus is a guy.
[28:49] Speaker 1: In Byron Young's not really like this as much, but
[28:52] Speaker 1: you know, they had a group of guys who would
[28:53] Speaker 1: create pressure but not finish the play. Garrett can finish
[28:56] Speaker 1: the play.
[28:57] Speaker 3: You can definitely finish the play. And I have to
[28:59] Speaker 3: give a lot of credit need for acknowledging their weaknesses
[29:02] Speaker 3: and their deficiencies by first addressing the secondary. And then
[29:05] Speaker 3: this is like the cherry on top, like, yeah, we're
[29:07] Speaker 3: going to get better on the back end, provided we
[29:08] Speaker 3: can stay healthy throughout the season, but we're also going
[29:11] Speaker 3: to not just run back what we had before.
[29:12] Speaker 4: We're going to upgrade there too.
[29:13] Speaker 3: Just to make sure that there are no crevices and
[29:16] Speaker 3: chances that we can get exposed like we did in
[29:18] Speaker 3: the playoffs, because that's when it matters most. And I'm
[29:22] Speaker 3: very excited to see exactly how productive this team can be. Again.
[29:25] Speaker 3: You wish you good health for every player, and that's
[29:27] Speaker 3: going to be their biggest challenge, I think. But I
[29:30] Speaker 3: would really love to see what Chris Shula is going
[29:32] Speaker 3: to do with Miles Garrett this defense, because like the
[29:34] Speaker 3: Browns under Jim Schwartz, they like to move Miles around.
[29:37] Speaker 3: Sometimes they'd move them to the interior. Sometimes they take
[29:40] Speaker 3: his hand out of the dirt and just try to
[29:42] Speaker 3: create mismatches to where you couldn't dedicate extra blockers to him.
[29:45] Speaker 4: Are the Rams going to do something similar?
[29:46] Speaker 3: They're going to keep him more in a traditional place
[29:49] Speaker 3: and trust the strength of the defense as a whole,
[29:51] Speaker 3: because now front to back it's a very strong defense.
[29:54] Speaker 2: It's crazy.
[29:55] Speaker 1: I mean, I'm still sort of wrapping my mind around
[29:59] Speaker 1: that they really did this, and I'm thinking of like
[30:00] Speaker 1: different winners and losers.
[30:01] Speaker 2: Yeah, Chris Shula is a big winner.
[30:04] Speaker 1: Obviously, there's a peppin the step of really anyone associated
[30:07] Speaker 1: with the Los Angeles RAMS today, including Sean McVay. But
[30:11] Speaker 1: you know who's a sneaky winner, su who you know
[30:14] Speaker 1: who first had this like in print in terms of
[30:21] Speaker 1: like online. Do you remember the name that I told
[30:24] Speaker 1: you earlier?
[30:25] Speaker 3: No, I have the notes in front of me, so
[30:26] Speaker 3: I'm cheating on the test. Easton Butler from twenty four
[30:28] Speaker 3: to seven Packers.
[30:31] Speaker 2: Easton Butler tweeted about this.
[30:35] Speaker 1: He covers the packers for twenty four to seven Packers
[30:37] Speaker 1: like Packers update.
[30:38] Speaker 2: I believe it's called. He tweeted last.
[30:41] Speaker 1: Night that he heard the RAMS had offered a Ricky
[30:45] Speaker 1: Williams like Godfather offer for Garrett and that this thing
[30:49] Speaker 1: could be happening. Didn't really get picked up everywhere, and
[30:53] Speaker 1: I'm not sure it's a Ricky Williams like offer.
[30:54] Speaker 4: It's not.
[30:55] Speaker 1: Frankly, maybe there was another RAMS offer though, and I'll
[30:59] Speaker 1: be interested to hear from Jordan the process of how
[31:02] Speaker 1: this trade went down wouldn't surprise me if we heard
[31:05] Speaker 1: that there was a extremely pick heavy offer again and
[31:09] Speaker 1: again from the RAMS, and when Ian Rappaport says that
[31:13] Speaker 1: they were persistent that eventually some of those picks turned
[31:18] Speaker 1: into Jared Verse and then that was the moment that
[31:22] Speaker 1: the Browns were like, okay, because shout out to Easton Butler.
[31:27] Speaker 2: He got the general ballpark of it right.
[31:28] Speaker 1: And even ESPN Radio said earlier this morning in Cleveland
[31:32] Speaker 1: that they heard the deal was actually done a rumor,
[31:34] Speaker 1: and it sounds like they were right.
[31:37] Speaker 3: Now, if only I can engineer the reverse La to
[31:40] Speaker 3: Cleveland move and ESPN Radio Cleveland taking the callers from
[31:44] Speaker 3: a random bakery, if that can come through and a
[31:47] Speaker 3: certain basketball player can come back to Cleveland, that would
[31:50] Speaker 3: be that would be cool.
[31:50] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Plus, we're working on another deal out here
[31:53] Speaker 1: for the city of Los Angeles, just for around the
[31:56] Speaker 1: NFL lovers. We're trying to acquire Lakeisha Wesleing back on
[32:00] Speaker 1: the West coast. We'll see if we can we can
[32:02] Speaker 1: complete that deal, but we're trying to bring her back
[32:05] Speaker 1: from from the Midwest as well. Man obj signing just
[32:13] Speaker 1: feels kind of overlooked now. I you know, part of
[32:16] Speaker 1: me wants to just finish the show on Miles Garrett,
[32:19] Speaker 1: but Odell Beckham's back in the league. Let's at least
[32:22] Speaker 1: spend a couple of minutes on Odell Beckham is with
[32:25] Speaker 1: with the Giants.
[32:26] Speaker 2: That's cool. That's cool.
[32:28] Speaker 3: I was gonna say, not only back in the league,
[32:30] Speaker 3: back where he started his career. It's just a it's
[32:32] Speaker 3: a homecoming. It's a situation in which Odell's finally found
[32:36] Speaker 3: an opportunity to play football again with a team that
[32:38] Speaker 3: could use him at receiver. You know, you got to
[32:41] Speaker 3: wonder about the health of Molik Neighbors, who suffered an
[32:44] Speaker 3: injury last year. You need depth of the position. You
[32:46] Speaker 3: lost Wondale Robinson in the offseason. They also signed Braxton Burials.
[32:50] Speaker 3: They are attacking the position with with aggression, understandable aggression.
[32:54] Speaker 4: I would love it.
[32:56] Speaker 3: As somebody who got to know Odell in Cleveland, I
[32:58] Speaker 3: would love it if his final chapter is going back
[33:02] Speaker 3: to New York and being productive and helping them win
[33:05] Speaker 3: games and start this turnaround that they've been trying to
[33:08] Speaker 3: initiate for the last few years. And then he rides
[33:12] Speaker 3: off into the sunset with a reputation that has rehabilitated
[33:15] Speaker 3: in the Big Apple, and everybody just says, we love you, Odell,
[33:18] Speaker 3: thanks for coming back and helping us out.
[33:20] Speaker 1: Yeah, what's the best case scenario here? It's that Yeah,
[33:23] Speaker 1: he helps out that young receiver group or really the
[33:27] Speaker 1: one young receiver specifically in Malik Neighbors, and it's just nice.
[33:32] Speaker 1: He gets some big ovations, he makes a few big catches.
[33:34] Speaker 1: But let's be real, he's a thirty four year old
[33:37] Speaker 1: receiver who was not in the NFL last year, partly
[33:40] Speaker 1: because he hasn't been healthy, but partly because he just
[33:42] Speaker 1: wasn't productive. The last time we saw him he played
[33:45] Speaker 1: nine games for the Miami Dolphins two seasons ago. I
[33:48] Speaker 1: don't think people really remember that, and he had nine
[33:51] Speaker 1: catches for like fifty five yards, wasn't moving the same.
[33:54] Speaker 1: So he has no lock to make the team. But
[33:58] Speaker 1: it is a cool story. And if he does make
[34:00] Speaker 1: the team, and John Harbad has a good relationship with
[34:03] Speaker 1: him because he worked with him in Baltimore, and so
[34:05] Speaker 1: that's a great sign that John Harbaugh believes in him.
[34:09] Speaker 1: If he's there just as a role player. I've seen
[34:12] Speaker 1: some you know, haters out there being like why are
[34:15] Speaker 1: they using like a big graphic and making this out
[34:18] Speaker 1: to be a big deal, like he's a.
[34:20] Speaker 2: Fourth fifth receiver.
[34:21] Speaker 1: This is one of the most famous football players of
[34:25] Speaker 1: the last twenty five years.
[34:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, like what can we not have fun.
[34:31] Speaker 5: It's June first, It's it's a Odell Beckham junior. He
[34:34] Speaker 5: drives clicks, he drives headlines. He is a name that
[34:37] Speaker 5: everybody knows. People who don't know anything about football know
[34:40] Speaker 5: who Odell is. Give him some time in the spotlight.
[34:43] Speaker 5: It's good, it's good for marketing.
[34:45] Speaker 1: But here's what he also is, Chuck one of the
[34:48] Speaker 1: greatest receivers early in his career that we've seen enter
[34:53] Speaker 1: the league this century. Full Stop Reception Perception is a
[34:56] Speaker 1: site that Matt Harmon, our friend, runs where he logs
[35:00] Speaker 1: every single route that a receiver takes period. Who has
[35:04] Speaker 1: the number one overall score in terms of getting open
[35:09] Speaker 1: against man coverage in the history of his site in
[35:13] Speaker 1: a single season, Freaking Beckham, who has two of the
[35:17] Speaker 1: top four scores.
[35:18] Speaker 2: It wasn't just.
[35:19] Speaker 1: One season of any season of any receiver getting open
[35:23] Speaker 1: this When he came into the league, you know, I
[35:25] Speaker 1: just can hear Chris Westling's voice in my head so clearly,
[35:29] Speaker 1: And we talked about it a lot on our old
[35:31] Speaker 1: around the NFL podcast that like he is as good
[35:34] Speaker 1: coming into the league as just about anyone that we
[35:37] Speaker 1: had seen. Obviously, injuries took him out, but he made
[35:40] Speaker 1: that noise with the New York Giants, So of course
[35:42] Speaker 1: we're going to be sentimental. And it's of course a
[35:45] Speaker 1: big deal when a great, and he was a great
[35:48] Speaker 1: for just a shorter time than you would have wanted
[35:50] Speaker 1: for the New York Giants rejoins his own team.
[35:53] Speaker 2: It'll be fun.
[35:54] Speaker 3: The catch, the catch, that catch that everybody knows and
[35:58] Speaker 3: that Madden put it in an animated and every third
[36:01] Speaker 3: long downfield catch was Odell's catch. Again, that's how transformative
[36:05] Speaker 3: it was that happened at MetLife Stadium with Odell and
[36:09] Speaker 3: a Giants uniform. Appreciate the history and the connection here.
[36:13] Speaker 1: Guys that said, if I wanted to be a jerk
[36:15] Speaker 1: about this, if you're watching us on on YouTube again,
[36:18] Speaker 1: thanks to everyone joining us in the comments and everything. Yeah,
[36:21] Speaker 1: they signed two receivers. They also signed Braxton Barrios. And
[36:25] Speaker 1: if you were forcing me to guess who is more
[36:27] Speaker 1: likely to make the NFL roster this year, probably Braxton Barrios.
[36:34] Speaker 1: You need return your health. That's because you can return,
[36:37] Speaker 1: or he's a special teams guy. It's a one to
[36:39] Speaker 1: one comp for Gunner. Olshevski not a name, probably a
[36:43] Speaker 1: lot of people are familiar with, but a very good
[36:45] Speaker 1: return special teamer guy who unfortunately tore his ACL just
[36:49] Speaker 1: last week. And it actually kind of made me laugh
[36:51] Speaker 1: that the Giants signed Braxton Barrios first, the head of Odell,
[36:55] Speaker 1: and he's the pick to uh to take over for
[36:58] Speaker 1: Olshevski because they're both similar undersized slot receivers that were
[37:03] Speaker 1: initially with the New England Patriots. So it was just
[37:06] Speaker 1: kind of like, oh, let's check off our our last
[37:09] Speaker 1: former Patriots undersized slack guy worked out well for us
[37:12] Speaker 1: with ol Chewski.
[37:13] Speaker 3: Let's just sign there and now we can go shopping. Odell,
[37:15] Speaker 3: you come up, it's your turn, Now you come sign
[37:17] Speaker 3: a contract.
[37:19] Speaker 1: Yes, look, it's June first. This was the day we
[37:24] Speaker 1: were waiting for shook as we wrap up to arrive
[37:29] Speaker 1: because what was it supposed to be?
[37:31] Speaker 3: It was supposed to be a j Brown day? Right,
[37:34] Speaker 3: the show going to hear We started with aj Brown.
[37:39] Speaker 1: Right, I've got news, I've got Abdol Carter talking about
[37:43] Speaker 1: Jackson Dart, I've got Michael. When we've taken a pack up,
[37:46] Speaker 1: I feel like all that's beside the point. We might
[37:48] Speaker 1: hit that on a news rundown later in the week.
[37:51] Speaker 1: But when it comes to a j Brown, Yes, June
[37:54] Speaker 1: first was the day for people who are unfamiliar with
[37:57] Speaker 1: how the contracts work in the NFL, where you kind
[38:00] Speaker 1: of kick forward some of the contract penalties. After June first,
[38:05] Speaker 1: you can have spread the money for any dead cap
[38:08] Speaker 1: hit in terms of a trade over the next two
[38:11] Speaker 1: years twenty six and twenty seven. If you had done
[38:15] Speaker 1: it before June first, you couldn't have done that. You
[38:16] Speaker 1: would have to take a big cap hit. The Eagles
[38:19] Speaker 1: would have to take a bigger cap hit if they
[38:22] Speaker 1: had traded AJ Brown before June first. As we're taping this,
[38:26] Speaker 1: we're actually an hour and a half away from that
[38:29] Speaker 1: magical hour. But as we saw with Miles Garrett, you
[38:32] Speaker 1: can still have a report, you can have an agreement
[38:34] Speaker 1: before that. We don't have any agreement yet for AJ Brown.
[38:37] Speaker 1: I'd love it if it happens. Let's say tomorrow morning,
[38:40] Speaker 1: before Jordan and I get on the horn and we
[38:43] Speaker 1: talk about AJ Brown, we talk about the aftermath.
[38:45] Speaker 4: To tell me you to want to just do this again.
[38:48] Speaker 2: That's true.
[38:49] Speaker 1: We could just pop back on today. I don't know
[38:50] Speaker 1: if Eric Roberts, our producer, would would totally approve of that,
[38:53] Speaker 1: but I would The one thing that moved it forward
[38:57] Speaker 1: today in terms of AJ Brown was a report from
[38:59] Speaker 1: Jay Jeff McLain of the Philadelphia Choir that believes a
[39:03] Speaker 1: twenty twenty eight first round pick is going to be
[39:05] Speaker 1: the compensation from the Patriots. What do you think about
[39:09] Speaker 1: that compensation?
[39:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, my initial reaction was a bit of a punch
[39:13] Speaker 3: to the gut there, because I would like it to
[39:15] Speaker 3: be a first round in the upcoming draft. Just it
[39:18] Speaker 3: feels a little devalued when it's two years out. But
[39:21] Speaker 3: if you're I mean, if you're really projecting what that
[39:24] Speaker 3: pick is going to be, you expect the Patriots to
[39:26] Speaker 3: be a competitive team. They did just make the Super Bowl,
[39:29] Speaker 3: and so regardless of whether it's this year or the next,
[39:31] Speaker 3: it's not going to be a high first round pick.
[39:34] Speaker 3: It's still good value that you're going to get a
[39:36] Speaker 3: first round pick from AJ Brown because Howie Roseman has
[39:39] Speaker 3: almost no leverage. We've expected this to happen for months.
[39:42] Speaker 3: We knew that they were going to divorce, that their
[39:44] Speaker 3: time together was through. Jalen Hurts talked about him in
[39:47] Speaker 3: the past tense last week, and so yeah, this is
[39:50] Speaker 3: about the best you can get. I always, of course,
[39:53] Speaker 3: I have a high valuation on AJ Brown just because
[39:55] Speaker 3: of what he's done with the Eagles and what I
[39:56] Speaker 3: still think he can do in the right offensive situation
[39:58] Speaker 3: that is not the dysfunctional men that has been the
[40:00] Speaker 3: Eagles over the last three to four years. But we
[40:04] Speaker 3: are operating, you know, with different market forces in play,
[40:06] Speaker 3: including the fact that again how he can't really necessarily
[40:10] Speaker 3: drive up the leverage unless another team wants to get involved.
[40:12] Speaker 3: And I feel like at this point they just want
[40:13] Speaker 3: to get it done and move on already.
[40:15] Speaker 1: I mean it's good they getting a first round pick.
[40:18] Speaker 1: That's pretty good.
[40:19] Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, fighting again, in a vacuum, I would
[40:23] Speaker 5: like more than one first rounder.
[40:25] Speaker 3: But then again, I think I think we also are
[40:27] Speaker 3: in an area This is hard to say this as
[40:29] Speaker 3: soon as the Browns got a twenty seven first and
[40:31] Speaker 3: Jared Verse for Miles Garrett, But we are I think
[40:35] Speaker 3: we often when we look at star players in trade talks,
[40:38] Speaker 3: we overvalue them, you know, comparative to draft compensation. And
[40:42] Speaker 3: I think I'm still stuck in that because especially after
[40:44] Speaker 3: we with Miles Garrett, so you're.
[40:46] Speaker 1: Around that they traded for from the Titans because he
[40:50] Speaker 1: told off a season that was injury marred early in
[40:52] Speaker 1: the season. He looked quite good down the stretch and
[40:55] Speaker 1: was very productive down the stretch, So I think that
[40:57] Speaker 1: really helped his trade value.
[40:59] Speaker 2: But he's getting up there and he's not Miles Garrett.
[41:01] Speaker 1: Miles Garrett's a generational player coming from a coming off
[41:05] Speaker 1: of a record breaking season. Yeah, AJ Brown is not
[41:08] Speaker 1: that he is a really good number one receiver. I
[41:13] Speaker 1: as someone who who pays his full credit card bill,
[41:17] Speaker 1: you know, each and every month, doesn't like the debt.
[41:19] Speaker 1: It just doesn't doesn't make sense to me. It's like
[41:23] Speaker 1: that twenty twenty eight first. I mean, it's basically just
[41:26] Speaker 1: as valuable. Other than the fact that you know, we
[41:29] Speaker 1: all might not be here in twenty twenty eight because
[41:31] Speaker 1: because AI is taken over by then, or there's some massive,
[41:35] Speaker 1: you know, weather emergency. Howie Roseman, if he wants a job,
[41:38] Speaker 1: is running the Eagles, that first round pick is basically
[41:40] Speaker 1: just as valuable to me as a twenty twenty seven First,
[41:43] Speaker 1: I think that's pretty good. I think it's fair trade
[41:45] Speaker 1: for me.
[41:45] Speaker 2: That's fair.
[41:45] Speaker 3: I mean, I again, you can't drive up the price
[41:48] Speaker 3: on a guy that you have.
[41:50] Speaker 4: No leverage on anymore. It's as simple as that. Unless
[41:52] Speaker 4: another team wants to get involved.
[41:54] Speaker 3: You know, the business is still open after four want
[41:58] Speaker 3: trying to make a phone call.
[41:59] Speaker 4: Huh.
[42:00] Speaker 1: We we have a question asking now that Miles Garrett
[42:04] Speaker 1: was traded, the Rams must be out on AJ Brown. Yes,
[42:07] Speaker 1: the Rams were out on AJ Brown the minute that
[42:10] Speaker 1: that report got out there, and that they had a
[42:13] Speaker 1: conversation with Devon da Adams explaining to him that hey man, sorry,
[42:20] Speaker 1: we were gonna possibly trade you and bringing AJ Brown,
[42:24] Speaker 1: but now we're you know, his salary is locked in
[42:28] Speaker 1: and like that that ship had sailed from everything we knew.
[42:30] Speaker 1: They were then out at a J. Brown at that point.
[42:33] Speaker 1: Here's a question for you, Shook, and I don't know
[42:35] Speaker 1: if you can do this right now? To wrap up
[42:37] Speaker 1: our show, is trading for Miles Garrett a boost for
[42:41] Speaker 1: the Rams, Like when you play the dumpster trumpet on
[42:44] Speaker 1: your Twitch channel, explain for the listeners what that means.
[42:48] Speaker 3: Okay, so in moments in what you need to drive
[42:50] Speaker 3: up the energy on my Twitch channel when we're usually
[42:52] Speaker 3: playing college football twenty six, I have a clip that
[42:54] Speaker 3: I found on social media of a guy playing a
[42:55] Speaker 3: trumpet into a dumpster, and it's the trumpet to harden
[42:58] Speaker 3: the paint by walk a flock of flame and it's
[43:00] Speaker 3: just it's very loud.
[43:02] Speaker 4: It's it's it.
[43:02] Speaker 3: Drives up the energy. Come on, get out of your seats,
[43:04] Speaker 3: let's go. We need some energy here. So yes, it
[43:06] Speaker 3: is a boost for the Rams like the dumpster trumpet,
[43:08] Speaker 3: and the dumpster trumpet never fails to deliver, much like
[43:11] Speaker 3: Miles Scarrett never fails to deliver.
[43:13] Speaker 2: How about a boost for us, Shookie.
[43:16] Speaker 1: I went through the history of the NFL, and I
[43:18] Speaker 1: want you to get that trumpet ready?
[43:20] Speaker 4: Is it potentially if we can't surface a year now,
[43:23] Speaker 4: come on.
[43:24] Speaker 2: Bro, that would be a great way to end this show.
[43:27] Speaker 4: I would if I had control over this, but I don't.
[43:29] Speaker 1: I'm feeling I'm feeling this in my soul that it's
[43:32] Speaker 1: just in the background right now. I don't think there's
[43:36] Speaker 1: ever been a trade like this, like Eric Dickerson was
[43:39] Speaker 1: traded in the middle of a season, again the Rams involved.
[43:43] Speaker 1: This time it's going the other direction where he was
[43:45] Speaker 1: the leading rusher in the league the year before and
[43:49] Speaker 1: at a time when running backs were pretty much the
[43:51] Speaker 1: biggest superstars in the NFL when they traded him to Indianapolis,
[43:54] Speaker 1: and then he was the leading rusher in the league
[43:57] Speaker 1: the year after that was in the middle of season,
[44:01] Speaker 1: like draft picks are involved in general. When you think
[44:04] Speaker 1: about moves like this, Joe Montana was traded one of
[44:07] Speaker 1: the greatest players of all time.
[44:10] Speaker 2: We didn't know what he was going to be like
[44:11] Speaker 2: on the Chiefs, but he.
[44:12] Speaker 1: Was just giffing too. Yeah, he was not coming off
[44:15] Speaker 1: his all time best season. Again, it's just like picks,
[44:20] Speaker 1: and this time it's for a younger player at the
[44:24] Speaker 1: position he's coming off his biggest season. I don't think
[44:27] Speaker 1: there's ever been a trade like this in NFL history.
[44:30] Speaker 3: It's a Madden trade. I think it's it's the type
[44:34] Speaker 3: of trade that you don't want to extend your guy
[44:35] Speaker 3: and you're in Madden and you go find a younger,
[44:37] Speaker 3: comparable guy with a superstar development and you go get
[44:40] Speaker 3: it done.
[44:41] Speaker 2: But you know what it's not.
[44:42] Speaker 1: It's not the Madden trade from the irresponsible eleven year
[44:46] Speaker 1: old who's just trading away future picks and willy nilly
[44:49] Speaker 1: because he knows he's never even gonna get to twenty.
[44:52] Speaker 2: Eight twenty nine.
[44:53] Speaker 1: I think these make sense for both teams. For the
[44:57] Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns for the Rams. I don't think they're mortgaging future.
[45:00] Speaker 1: And as we wrap up, we actually get the update.
[45:03] Speaker 1: Thank you to Ian Rappaport, who gives us the final
[45:08] Speaker 1: details of the trade. It is officially Jared Verse a
[45:13] Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven first round pick. And here's where it
[45:16] Speaker 1: gets interesting. Oh, the remaining picks for your Browns, you
[45:21] Speaker 1: also get a twenty twenty eight second round pick in
[45:25] Speaker 1: a twenty twenty nine third round pick.
[45:29] Speaker 2: You will be.
[45:31] Speaker 1: Reaping the rewards of this Miles Garrett trade into twenty
[45:36] Speaker 1: twenty nine. Who knows what's happening in the world, and
[45:39] Speaker 1: we might have updated. You know, you might have hairby then.
[45:42] Speaker 2: Shook.
[45:43] Speaker 4: Be still my beating heart.
[45:45] Speaker 3: This is the best possible package, realistically that you could get.
[45:48] Speaker 3: It's a victory for Andrew Berry and it's a victory
[45:50] Speaker 3: for less need. I love it when things work out
[45:52] Speaker 3: for both sides.
[45:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, we spent the day not knowing what those other
[45:56] Speaker 1: picks will be. I gotta be honest, if you had
[45:59] Speaker 1: asked me to guess what the other picks would be,
[46:02] Speaker 1: I would have guessed the second round pick would have
[46:05] Speaker 1: been involved. And so a second and a third and
[46:08] Speaker 1: the third is further out. Isn't that much more than that?
[46:11] Speaker 1: But ultimately, like, if I'm a Browns fan and I
[46:14] Speaker 1: see it was twenty eight, you know, the twenty seven
[46:17] Speaker 1: first plus, I think this is really good. I think
[46:20] Speaker 1: you're getting four players for Miles Garrett. One of them
[46:26] Speaker 1: is awesome and he is hopefully going to be part
[46:30] Speaker 1: of your organization for longer than Miles Garrett is part
[46:34] Speaker 1: of the Rams organization. And then you get three you know,
[46:38] Speaker 1: lottery tickets. They're not high lottery tickets. It's a late
[46:40] Speaker 1: first most likely, and it's a second and in a third,
[46:43] Speaker 1: But that's how you continue to build up the Browns.
[46:46] Speaker 2: I like it for both sides.
[46:47] Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think it reflects poorly on the
[46:50] Speaker 1: Rams that they gave up more, but I think it
[46:52] Speaker 1: just confirms the fact that it totally made sense for
[46:56] Speaker 1: a team in the Browns who had a guy who,
[46:58] Speaker 1: by the way, didn't exactly want him either.
[47:00] Speaker 2: Yep.
[47:01] Speaker 3: And you know what, it was a great way to
[47:03] Speaker 3: tie a bow on this live show that we did
[47:05] Speaker 3: not expect to do today.
[47:06] Speaker 4: And now that's weird.
[47:07] Speaker 3: I'm not gonna lie that visual is still gonna take
[47:09] Speaker 3: some time to get used to Miles Garrett in Royal
[47:12] Speaker 3: Blue and Soul, the name for the gold that the
[47:15] Speaker 3: rams Wow. But that is our future now, folks, life
[47:18] Speaker 3: changes quickly.
[47:20] Speaker 1: If you thought that you saw a lot of the
[47:23] Speaker 1: Miles Garrett Chloe Kim credit card commercial that is playing
[47:29] Speaker 1: literally every break. If you happen to be watching the
[47:31] Speaker 1: French Open on HBO Max, shout out to Adam Lefko
[47:34] Speaker 1: and the coverage there a great job. Miles Garrett's gonna
[47:38] Speaker 1: be an even bigger star. He's getting all the promotion
[47:42] Speaker 1: for this season, all the advertisements. It's it's everything that
[47:46] Speaker 1: he ever wanted, and frankly, I think everything the NFL
[47:50] Speaker 1: wants and for Browns fans out there, yes, I think.
[47:53] Speaker 2: You got to be pretty happy with what you got.
[47:55] Speaker 1: You got that magical moment with Andrew Ceciliano calling that
[47:59] Speaker 1: sack pretty amazing to think about the final six minutes
[48:03] Speaker 1: of Miles Garrett's career in Cleveland, pretty storybook.
[48:07] Speaker 2: He sets the sack.
[48:08] Speaker 1: Record with one of our good friends calling it, man,

[48:41] Speaker 1: you asked earlier about whether Garrett being on the block
[48:46] Speaker 1: is just a fact of well, AJ Brown's out there.
[48:49] Speaker 2: We got to talk about something. Is that why it's
[48:51] Speaker 2: out there?
[48:52] Speaker 1: People are just like looking for other potential trade candidates.
[48:55] Speaker 1: It's almost like you knew that I had that as
[49:00] Speaker 1: like a mini section of the show. I tried to
[49:02] Speaker 1: think about other potential trade candidates here, and uh, we've
[49:06] Speaker 1: got Kevon Thibodeau is a possibility.
[49:09] Speaker 2: He's just been out there for a while.
[49:11] Speaker 4: Oh boy, oh my holy shit, Oh my god.
