[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're back at the base
[0:08] Speaker 1: of the mounta and I'm Greg Rosenthal here in the
[0:10] Speaker 1: Chris Westling podcast studio.
[0:12] Speaker 2: Great to say that name.
[0:13] Speaker 1: Great to say the name of my friend Jordan Rodrigue,
[0:17] Speaker 1: fresh off a starring role, doing a great job hosting
[0:21] Speaker 1: the show a week ago. Are you ready for season
[0:25] Speaker 1: three of NFL Daily?
[0:26] Speaker 3: I'm fired up for season three of NFL Daily. It
[0:29] Speaker 3: really never makes me appreciate your job more than when
[0:34] Speaker 3: I have to sit in that chair for multiple shows.
[0:37] Speaker 3: That was a terrifying and exhilarating experience, and I like
[0:40] Speaker 3: where I'm sitting right now.
[0:41] Speaker 1: Yes, it's very egocentric of me to call this season
[0:45] Speaker 1: three just because it happens to be when I'm back
[0:47] Speaker 1: from vacation.
[0:47] Speaker 2: But yeah, we.
[0:48] Speaker 4: Started I think that's your name's on the show in.
[0:50] Speaker 1: Mid July a couple of years ago. So we thank everyone.
[0:54] Speaker 1: And yes, I mentioned the base camp. Later on in
[0:57] Speaker 1: this episode, inspired by my recent trip atop Mount Fuji,
[1:02] Speaker 1: we're going to rank the teams who have never won
[1:06] Speaker 1: a title most likely to reach the summit.
[1:10] Speaker 2: You see what I did there?
[1:11] Speaker 3: Mmmm, it never worked for those people, but maybe it
[1:14] Speaker 3: could work for US.
[1:16] Speaker 1: Forty eight hours ago. I was still on Mount Fuji
[1:21] Speaker 1: and this is sad. I'd listened to your shows after
[1:25] Speaker 1: I got back down, and you guys were like, oh,
[1:28] Speaker 1: you know, he can't unplug from football.
[1:30] Speaker 2: I was pretty unplugged until the weekend.
[1:32] Speaker 1: But I have to admit I was on the top
[1:34] Speaker 1: of Fuji that the sun's coming up, were way above
[1:39] Speaker 1: the clouds.
[1:40] Speaker 2: It's just beautiful. It was. It was pretty exhilarating.
[1:43] Speaker 1: And one of the thoughts I had just sitting there,
[1:45] Speaker 1: it's total quiet, there's a lot of people up there.
[1:47] Speaker 1: It was, it's really weird. I have a podcast in
[1:50] Speaker 1: two days. What are we going to talk about? Of
[1:55] Speaker 1: course forty eight hours from then.
[1:57] Speaker 3: Of course that thought just crystallizes it into your brain.
[2:01] Speaker 1: The time zone being fourteen hours gave me a little
[2:03] Speaker 1: extra time, but it was like, huh, and so what
[2:06] Speaker 1: we're gonna do. We're gonna talk about the teams that
[2:08] Speaker 1: we'll be reaching the summit for the first time.
[2:09] Speaker 3: It's amazing sometimes. Now I've gotten to know you come
[2:13] Speaker 3: pretty good friends. Over the last couple of years, Greg,
[2:15] Speaker 3: and I've noticed your off seasons and your trips. I
[2:18] Speaker 3: feel like pretty inspired by them. Honestly, if you'll excuse
[2:22] Speaker 3: like a little earnest moment, Oh, it's you just go
[2:25] Speaker 3: do stuff like you just summoned Malfuji for example. Like
[2:29] Speaker 3: you just go and your family, you guys just go
[2:31] Speaker 3: and you do stuff and you experience things and you
[2:33] Speaker 3: get inspiration from things. I mean, really, this inspired the
[2:38] Speaker 3: segment we're doing today.
[2:39] Speaker 1: Hey, I mean, you'll take inspiration wherever it comes from.
[2:42] Speaker 2: Am I am very sore.
[2:44] Speaker 1: They don't tell you that the coming down the mountain sneaky, maybe.
[2:47] Speaker 4: Harder you didn't just roll, you'd speaking.
[2:50] Speaker 2: Maybe harder than going up it.
[2:52] Speaker 1: But I'm sure we'll be We'll be sprinkling in little
[2:55] Speaker 1: bits of Fuji and the trip over the next few weeks.
[2:58] Speaker 1: But we will do some news before doing our rankings
[3:01] Speaker 1: of the day. We're about nine days away from the
[3:05] Speaker 1: first full teams reporting to training camps, so this is
[3:08] Speaker 1: the last truly quiet week of the NFL offseason. We think,
[3:13] Speaker 1: you never know, something could pop up, but the first
[3:15] Speaker 1: week or the last week rather where teams will not
[3:18] Speaker 1: be showing up. Some rookies are showing up a little
[3:20] Speaker 1: earlier in that, but those are the Hall of Fame
[3:22] Speaker 1: teams and then the rest of the teams are all
[3:25] Speaker 1: working out and will be daily by then, but they
[3:28] Speaker 1: show up by July twenty eighth. But let's get to
[3:30] Speaker 1: the news, starting with your Rams. Aaron Donald over the
[3:34] Speaker 1: weekend working out at the RAMS facility. This was Friday,
[3:39] Speaker 1: TMZ with the scoop. That's how you know it's true.
[3:43] Speaker 1: They've got pretty good accuracy lately. It's just amazing they're
[3:46] Speaker 1: breaking football news in full pads. Any thoughts about whether
[3:51] Speaker 1: this means he's back or not.
[3:53] Speaker 3: My first thought was picturing the I think apartment building
[3:56] Speaker 3: where they were filming into the Rams practice facility. That
[4:00] Speaker 3: was a much discussed topic when they first opened that
[4:03] Speaker 3: new facility about what if people just got up into
[4:06] Speaker 3: some of these apartments that were all around the facility
[4:08] Speaker 3: and started filming. I think that this is a real possibility.
[4:13] Speaker 3: I've thought that Aaron Donald could come back for quite
[4:15] Speaker 3: some time. The reason I think that is less so
[4:18] Speaker 3: some of the reporting and some of the excitement around
[4:21] Speaker 3: this particular offseason, but more so the Rams tried to
[4:25] Speaker 3: trade for Miles Garrett in twenty twenty two, and part
[4:28] Speaker 3: of that rationale was to bring Aaron Donald like this
[4:32] Speaker 3: player who he'd always really admired from Afar and really
[4:35] Speaker 3: like basically stave off any retirement thoughts from Aaron Donald,
[4:39] Speaker 3: who started thinking about life after football after winning that
[4:42] Speaker 3: first Super Bowl. So I think this is really exciting.
[4:46] Speaker 3: But I also knowing Aaron Donald a little bit, knowing
[4:49] Speaker 3: his habits, he does work out at the facility a lot. Now,
[4:53] Speaker 3: this was a little different because he had pads with him,
[4:55] Speaker 3: which was pretty cool, I think, but he does work
[4:58] Speaker 3: out there pretty frequently throughout the course of the off
[5:01] Speaker 3: season and even in season, people will see him around
[5:03] Speaker 3: the facility. So I'm like, I think that this could
[5:06] Speaker 3: actually happen. I don't think it actually is going to
[5:09] Speaker 3: be a real thought or a real conversation until we're
[5:13] Speaker 3: way into the off season, excuse me, way into the
[5:16] Speaker 3: regular season, even like post trade deadline November. Starting to
[5:20] Speaker 3: get his legs under him for real. This is like
[5:22] Speaker 3: sort of an Eric Weddle vibe to me. Okay, less,
[5:25] Speaker 3: so I want to spend an entire training camp after
[5:28] Speaker 3: being retired with it, It's just not I just don't
[5:30] Speaker 3: see him being in training camp or anything like.
[5:32] Speaker 2: I figured training camp.
[5:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, that like the earliest possible Aaron Donald return would
[5:37] Speaker 1: be after training camp up before the season, but hearing
[5:42] Speaker 1: that he could potentially show up for like the playoff push, Yeah,
[5:46] Speaker 1: the end of the regular season does make more sense
[5:49] Speaker 1: if I you know, I'm not a betting man. We're
[5:51] Speaker 1: not allowed to do that here at the NFL. If
[5:53] Speaker 1: I was, I would say I expect to see Aaron
[5:56] Speaker 1: Donald in Rams colors this year on the field. Adam Schefter,
[6:00] Speaker 1: for what it's worth, said on Pat McAfee on Monday
[6:03] Speaker 1: that Aaron Donald just wanted to see how it felt
[6:05] Speaker 1: with pads On and he just left it at that.
[6:08] Speaker 2: That was his report.
[6:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, like you, I think this will happen, truly,
[6:12] Speaker 3: I do, but I don't think it would happen until.
[6:14] Speaker 3: Like I mentioned the Eric Weddle path, he joined the
[6:16] Speaker 3: team in what was it early December or late excuse me,
[6:20] Speaker 3: late December, worked his way from practice squad into starting
[6:25] Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl. But they gave him time to
[6:27] Speaker 3: do it. He took the time to actually see if
[6:29] Speaker 3: it was going to be the right thing for him,
[6:31] Speaker 3: and it worked out in a very storybook way. And
[6:34] Speaker 3: I think Aaron Donald knows exactly what his plan would
[6:37] Speaker 3: be in that case.
[6:37] Speaker 1: I play potentially twenty games when you can play six
[6:41] Speaker 1: to nine or whatever it would be depending on their
[6:44] Speaker 1: playoff run. Also in the news, Daniel Jones reported to
[6:48] Speaker 1: be cleared to do everything. I believe this was from
[6:52] Speaker 1: Stephen Holder of ESPN and just kind of puts a
[6:56] Speaker 1: stamp on a story this offseason we've been following that
[6:59] Speaker 1: he's been a little ahead of what we would have expected.
[7:02] Speaker 1: And yeah, the opening of training camp he will be allowed.
[7:06] Speaker 1: I bet they still won't have him in pads too often,
[7:10] Speaker 1: but he basically is ready to go. And it just
[7:13] Speaker 1: confirms something I've been thinking, which is at this point
[7:16] Speaker 1: be surprised if he wasn't the Week one starter.
[7:18] Speaker 3: Yes, and as we remember from some of these Achilles
[7:21] Speaker 3: tear recoveries over the last couple of seasons, return to
[7:24] Speaker 3: action doesn't necessarily mean return to full performance. So I
[7:28] Speaker 3: would still exercise a lot of I think cautious optimism
[7:31] Speaker 3: in terms of what he would actually be capable of
[7:34] Speaker 3: doing or the level of play. But it's kind of
[7:38] Speaker 3: a miracle some of these surgeries now in a way
[7:41] Speaker 3: that they're getting players back on the field faster than ever.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Absolutely insane, and so I just I'm curious about how
[7:47] Speaker 3: all of this is going to go. I also was
[7:50] Speaker 3: on Riley Leonard, what film study watch last year? You
[7:53] Speaker 3: gave me that really glorious I had a lot of
[7:55] Speaker 3: mileage out of this. Hey, you gave me that really
[7:56] Speaker 3: glorious assignment. And I was happy to do it, you know,
[7:59] Speaker 3: for the show. I do whatever it takes for the show, right,
[8:02] Speaker 3: And so I didn't think he was that bad.
[8:04] Speaker 2: No, he was.
[8:04] Speaker 3: So if you need to patch, if you need to
[8:06] Speaker 3: patch pill in guy for a little bit, fine, that's fine.
[8:09] Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson is still on the roster. We'll see if
[8:11] Speaker 1: that's the case. Week one, the Seahawks were sold while
[8:15] Speaker 1: I was gone. Actually over the weekend, the venture capitalist
[8:20] Speaker 1: Vinod Kosla. First time I heard the name out loud,
[8:23] Speaker 1: So apologies if I got it wrong. Nine point six
[8:25] Speaker 1: billion dollars is the sale price. In some research materials
[8:31] Speaker 1: I conducted for this very moment, I found out that
[8:35] Speaker 1: Cosla prefers the term venture assistant, doesn't like the term
[8:40] Speaker 1: venture capitalist. I mean, if you're able to buy a
[8:44] Speaker 1: nine point six billion dollar team, I feel like, you know,
[8:47] Speaker 1: just embrace the capitalist.
[8:48] Speaker 3: That screams capitalists like you might not be able to
[8:52] Speaker 3: avoid the title there man.
[8:54] Speaker 1: Probably the most interesting things about this because obviously don't
[8:57] Speaker 1: know much about this man, that his wife, Nru Cosla,
[9:01] Speaker 1: will be the controlling owner. In general, it's the family
[9:03] Speaker 1: that's running it, according to to Cosla, but his wife
[9:07] Speaker 1: is going to be the one representing the team at
[9:10] Speaker 1: you know, a league meetings and whatnot. So that's that's
[9:12] Speaker 1: who will get to be familiar with, assuming they get approved.
[9:16] Speaker 1: And that he was a minority San Francisco forty nine
[9:20] Speaker 1: Ers owner as recently, you know, just bought into the
[9:22] Speaker 1: team like a year ago, like three percent of the team,
[9:25] Speaker 1: and we'll have to sell that stake in the forty
[9:28] Speaker 1: nine ers before he is officially confirmed. But yeah, this
[9:32] Speaker 1: is the biggest price ever for an NFL team. It
[9:37] Speaker 1: is crazy to think that the Waltons of Walmart and
[9:39] Speaker 1: this is the kind of money that you now need
[9:41] Speaker 1: to have to get into the NFL, which I don't
[9:44] Speaker 1: feel great about. Bought the Broncos four years ago now
[9:49] Speaker 1: for under five million dollars billion dollars five million, yeah,
[9:54] Speaker 1: that would be for under five million dollars. And now
[9:58] Speaker 1: we're almost to ten.
[10:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, and I remember, I mean I covered the Panthers sale.
[10:04] Speaker 3: I covered the process and the and the tax, the
[10:06] Speaker 3: different tax possibilities, and the two different states, and like
[10:10] Speaker 3: all of these different things that factored into that sale.
[10:13] Speaker 3: And you're not even looking at half of what that cost.
[10:17] Speaker 3: This some like four billion, four and a half billion
[10:19] Speaker 3: at the time, and now it's only it's been less
[10:23] Speaker 3: than a decade since that sale went through. This is
[10:25] Speaker 3: already also three billion more than the Commander's sale three.
[10:29] Speaker 1: Point two five billion, two point twenty seven five billion
[10:32] Speaker 1: for David Tepper in twenty eighteen, which discussed the show.
[10:35] Speaker 4: This as much it's crazy inflation.
[10:37] Speaker 1: It well, and it's not great because you now have
[10:42] Speaker 1: to be able to put together these consortiums of it's
[10:46] Speaker 1: like the rest of society. It's almost tame to think
[10:50] Speaker 1: back to the types of people who could try to
[10:52] Speaker 1: buy NFL teams before, and in theory it would be
[10:54] Speaker 1: like someone who really hit it big and was from
[10:58] Speaker 1: that town or had some connection or just always wanted
[11:01] Speaker 1: to run a team, and they didn't even look at
[11:02] Speaker 1: it necessarily as a way to just like print print money,
[11:06] Speaker 1: whereas now it's just the billionaires are running every aspect
[11:10] Speaker 1: of society and you have.
[11:10] Speaker 2: To be ultra ultra ultra ultra, ultra, ultra.
[11:13] Speaker 1: Ultra rich to even consider getting into buying an NFL team,
[11:17] Speaker 1: And the reason to do it is you'll always be
[11:20] Speaker 1: able to sell for a profit.
[11:22] Speaker 4: Except the green Bay Packers.
[11:24] Speaker 2: There you go.
[11:25] Speaker 4: Hold on, guys, speaking.
[11:27] Speaker 1: Of which, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
[11:32] Speaker 2: We'll end the news here. I just thought this was cute.
[11:36] Speaker 1: You know, had a Instagram post over the weekend he
[11:40] Speaker 1: got together with a bunch of his teammates with with
[11:44] Speaker 1: the Steelers, including DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman, Roman Wilson.
[11:48] Speaker 2: Was there? Scronic? I think?
[11:49] Speaker 1: Was there a whole bunch of people with the hashtag
[11:53] Speaker 1: like last Rodeo and they're all in like cowboy gear.
[11:58] Speaker 1: But the reason I wanted to mention it was the
[12:00] Speaker 1: first picture he posted was very fuzzy, and then people
[12:04] Speaker 1: made fun of him, and then a few hours later
[12:06] Speaker 1: he just posted a clearer version of that same picture,
[12:09] Speaker 1: but left up the original fuzzy one because it had
[12:11] Speaker 1: the other ones in the carousel.
[12:12] Speaker 2: It's just very very old guy moved there.
[12:14] Speaker 4: Yeah, boomer boomer move that.
[12:17] Speaker 3: I can just see this happening in like December, January
[12:21] Speaker 3: or whatever. He's on the Pat McAfee show, and they
[12:25] Speaker 3: asked him about one last rodeo and you know, so
[12:28] Speaker 3: that really means you're done after this, right, And then
[12:31] Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers very coyly sort of smirking at the camera
[12:34] Speaker 3: and saying, well, that could have just meant that I
[12:37] Speaker 3: was talking about the last week off before we're training camp,
[12:41] Speaker 3: you know, and in the summer, last rodeo of the summer.
[12:43] Speaker 3: I get totally Did you like my impression?
[12:45] Speaker 2: That was pretty good?
[12:46] Speaker 1: That was.
[12:48] Speaker 2: Unfortunate, I would say, not pretty good.
[12:52] Speaker 4: Now, well you will never unhear it.
[12:54] Speaker 2: Now.
[12:55] Speaker 1: I like that he's branding his final season. It just
[12:59] Speaker 1: makes it just makes the whole thing official. It's former teammate.
[13:02] Speaker 1: By the way, Isaiah McDuffie signed a one year extension
[13:05] Speaker 1: with the Green Bay Packers. How about that linebacker. Let's
[13:08] Speaker 1: take a break. Why not, it's the cleanest time to
[13:10] Speaker 1: do it. We're gonna come back. We're gonna have a
[13:12] Speaker 1: fun segment for you. Twelve teams in NFL history have
[13:16] Speaker 1: never won the Super Bowl.
[13:18] Speaker 2: Jordan, it seems like.
[13:21] Speaker 1: Too many, doesn't That seem like a lot of teams
[13:24] Speaker 1: to have never won the Super Bowl. There's a league
[13:26] Speaker 1: of thirty two teams and there's still twelve that have
[13:29] Speaker 1: never won.
[13:30] Speaker 2: The Super Bowl. This supposed to be the League of parody.
[13:33] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean when you look at how many appearances
[13:36] Speaker 3: many of them have, it makes a little bit more sense.
[13:39] Speaker 1: Four teams have not made any appearance. Yes, and yes
[13:42] Speaker 1: that includes some new teams like the Jaguars in Texas,
[13:44] Speaker 1: but they're not that new, like they're twenty five years
[13:47] Speaker 1: old or whatever.
[13:48] Speaker 4: By now, try harder, guys.
[13:50] Speaker 1: I'm just we don't have as many first time winners
[13:52] Speaker 1: as you would think. More on that in a second,
[13:54] Speaker 1: but we are going to draft with some serious stakes here.
[13:58] Speaker 1: Jordan teams most likely to win their first ever Super Bowl.
[14:03] Speaker 1: Back in back on NFL Daily, Back from Japan, back
[14:21] Speaker 1: off Mount Fuji. Shout out to one of my best friends,
[14:24] Speaker 1: Dave Dy've Bennett, best man at my wedding, who I
[14:27] Speaker 1: climbed Fuji with and who also is very sore. I
[14:31] Speaker 1: think a few days later, as I as am I
[14:34] Speaker 1: when I was atop the mountain Jordan, I thought, all right,
[14:37] Speaker 1: what's you know, what's the first segment I can come
[14:40] Speaker 1: up with to use this as content? And as I mentioned,
[14:44] Speaker 1: twenty of thirty two teams have won the Super Bowl,
[14:47] Speaker 1: but there's not as many first time winners as you
[14:51] Speaker 1: would think. We have not had a first time winner
[14:54] Speaker 1: of the Super Bowl since twenty seventeen. That was the Eagles,
[14:58] Speaker 1: that was the first time they won. The Seahawks were
[15:01] Speaker 1: the last one before that in twenty fourteen. Both those
[15:04] Speaker 1: teams have doubled up now each have two. There's only
[15:08] Speaker 1: been two first time winners since twenty ten, so it
[15:12] Speaker 1: doesn't happen too often. But there are twelve teams eligible
[15:15] Speaker 1: to be drafted in this draft. Of the teams, the
[15:18] Speaker 1: franchise is most likely to win their first Super Bowl.
[15:21] Speaker 1: And if this happens, Jordan, the team that we drafted
[15:26] Speaker 1: for us will earn us a prize. I don't know
[15:29] Speaker 1: have we finished, like deciding what the prize is going
[15:31] Speaker 1: to be.
[15:32] Speaker 3: Well, at minimum, we do know that it is public
[15:36] Speaker 3: celebration on NFL daily and also dinner.
[15:40] Speaker 2: Okay.
[15:41] Speaker 3: Now, I suggested that as we continue to go, if
[15:45] Speaker 3: you know, as the years go by, we just simply
[15:47] Speaker 3: raise the stakes. So at one point one of us
[15:49] Speaker 3: is going to owe the other a kidney, Okay, but
[15:52] Speaker 3: you know, the stakes will just increase as time goes
[15:56] Speaker 3: if our teams don't win.
[15:57] Speaker 1: Okay, so here are the terms we're draft seeing. These
[16:00] Speaker 1: twelve teams will each end up with six. It could
[16:03] Speaker 1: take years. We are going to have to keep NFL
[16:05] Speaker 1: Daily going at the very least until one of these
[16:09] Speaker 1: teams wins the super Bowl. So if it takes it's
[16:11] Speaker 1: been nine years since the last first time winning. If
[16:13] Speaker 1: it takes another nine years, you're locked in. This is
[16:16] Speaker 1: this is bonding.
[16:16] Speaker 4: I'm so here.
[16:17] Speaker 2: This is binding here and bonding, but I'm excited.
[16:20] Speaker 1: It'll give an extra little wrinkle to you know, if
[16:23] Speaker 1: we get to a conference championship weekend this year and
[16:26] Speaker 1: one of our teams is still left, the drama will
[16:30] Speaker 1: be up there. We held a draft, We held a
[16:33] Speaker 1: random selection of who got the first pick. Before it happened,
[16:37] Speaker 1: it was it was legit, right. I did not want
[16:39] Speaker 1: you saying it was not legit. We had a random
[16:42] Speaker 1: numbered generator.
[16:43] Speaker 4: Our guys will never believe who gets the first pick.
[16:46] Speaker 1: Our producer Quab witnessed it, so there was no chicanery.
[16:50] Speaker 1: But I did get the first I wasn't gonna just
[16:52] Speaker 1: be good and give it to you because in this case,
[16:55] Speaker 1: there was one team I wanted more than the rest.
[16:59] Speaker 1: Can you get which team that I really wanted the
[17:03] Speaker 1: first pick for.
[17:05] Speaker 4: I think you're going Bills here.
[17:07] Speaker 2: I am not.
[17:08] Speaker 1: I am going with the Houston Texans because ultimately hate
[17:12] Speaker 1: you right now, I want to annoy you.
[17:15] Speaker 2: That's number two.
[17:17] Speaker 1: Number one is I want to be on the side
[17:19] Speaker 1: of my son and something that I can root for.
[17:22] Speaker 1: I don't want even just a small bit of me
[17:25] Speaker 1: mildly annoyed when the Houston Texans win the Super Bowl
[17:28] Speaker 1: this year. And then I evaluated this, you know, in
[17:32] Speaker 1: a few different ways. But the most important things are ownership,
[17:36] Speaker 1: coach GM quarterback ownership has been pretty stable. I'm not
[17:41] Speaker 1: gonna put them in the top, but it's been stable.
[17:44] Speaker 1: Let this group execute their vision. But we've done the
[17:46] Speaker 1: GM rankings, We've talked about the coaching. That's as good
[17:49] Speaker 1: a coach GM combo as there is in the league.
[17:52] Speaker 1: I believe in CJ. Stroud, like I'd rather have like
[17:54] Speaker 1: a top five quarterback. Sure, But but you add all
[17:57] Speaker 1: those together and even if my son rooting interest was
[18:01] Speaker 1: not involved, they would easily be my top two. But
[18:05] Speaker 1: I actually think they would be my first pick because
[18:06] Speaker 1: this is not a one year pick if it was
[18:08] Speaker 1: most likely to win this year. Maybe the Bills are
[18:11] Speaker 1: a little ahead, maybe maybe not. But if you're giving
[18:13] Speaker 1: me five five years, I like this Texans squad that.
[18:17] Speaker 4: Would have been my number one overall pick.
[18:19] Speaker 2: Well that's why I wanted the one pick.
[18:21] Speaker 3: So first of all, how dare you? Second of all,
[18:24] Speaker 3: I agree with everything you're saying. When I was looking
[18:27] Speaker 3: at the sort of tiers that I would rank these
[18:30] Speaker 3: teams in, I was thinking about teams that had this
[18:35] Speaker 3: in this top tier of draft choices, above average to
[18:39] Speaker 3: elite quarterbacks with at least five prime seasons ahead of them.
[18:43] Speaker 4: And c J.
[18:44] Speaker 3: Stroud is is obviously above average and could be in
[18:47] Speaker 3: his career elite, and we've seen flashes of elite play
[18:51] Speaker 3: from him. I really appreciate that we were having I
[18:56] Speaker 3: think a little bit more nuanced conversations about c J.
[18:59] Speaker 3: Stroud through the year and into the off season, because
[19:01] Speaker 3: I think that a lot of people just totally wipe
[19:04] Speaker 3: out the fact that he had no run game. They
[19:07] Speaker 3: blame everything on either the offensive line or on CJ himself.
[19:10] Speaker 3: When establishing that run game and sort of re establishing
[19:13] Speaker 3: what sets him up for success is going to be
[19:16] Speaker 3: really important for him this year, and we've seen true
[19:19] Speaker 3: superstar potential from him. So I think that's a really
[19:23] Speaker 3: high upside pick. And I also was looking at ownership.
[19:26] Speaker 3: I was looking at does your head coach give you
[19:28] Speaker 3: an edge, or or a premier coach on your team
[19:32] Speaker 3: give you an edge in some way, and or does
[19:37] Speaker 3: the quarterback do enough to lift the floor of the coach.
[19:39] Speaker 4: And in that case, I think you can know who
[19:41] Speaker 4: I'm talking about.
[19:41] Speaker 2: He's officially above average. CJ.
[19:43] Speaker 1: Strod by the way, because he came in fifteenth on
[19:46] Speaker 1: the NFL Daily thirty two Quarterback ring that came out
[19:48] Speaker 1: over July fourth week when we were both off.
[19:51] Speaker 4: You just buried it.
[19:53] Speaker 3: You just dropped it, you know, that fourth of July
[19:55] Speaker 3: holiday news dump, because knew people would yell at you.
[19:58] Speaker 2: No.
[19:58] Speaker 1: No, I didn't put the rankings up until today. Actually,
[20:02] Speaker 1: you know it was going to sit up there for
[20:03] Speaker 1: five or six days. I was trying to think of
[20:04] Speaker 1: a good spot for it. But yes, there are a
[20:07] Speaker 1: lot of people angry about CJ. Stradley thought he was
[20:12] Speaker 1: too high. Actually wild to me. There's a lot of
[20:15] Speaker 1: Jayden Daniels like he's too low. There at thirteen Washington
[20:18] Speaker 1: radio wants to talk to me. They only want to
[20:19] Speaker 1: talk when they're mad about one of your rankings. But yes,
[20:22] Speaker 1: I had a feeling both of us had the Texans
[20:24] Speaker 1: number one, and so that's why I made sure it
[20:26] Speaker 1: was legit.
[20:27] Speaker 2: You are up with the number two overall pick.
[20:29] Speaker 4: I'm going Buffalo Bills here.
[20:31] Speaker 3: Obviously, the Josh Allen factor falls right into my category
[20:34] Speaker 3: of above average to elite, in his case, elite quarterbacks,
[20:37] Speaker 3: and I believe with at least five prime seasons ahead
[20:40] Speaker 3: of him, I think that we have yet to see
[20:43] Speaker 3: truly if there is a real advantage in an edge
[20:46] Speaker 3: that Joe Brady gives to this offense gives to this
[20:48] Speaker 3: team as a head coach, I do think he gave
[20:50] Speaker 3: them a real shot at edge as an offensive coordinator.
[20:54] Speaker 3: I don't know that I worry as much about the
[20:57] Speaker 3: front office, understanding that if they have the coach and
[21:01] Speaker 3: the quarterback set into place, then either the front office
[21:04] Speaker 3: has got to evolve and pivot in certain ways or
[21:08] Speaker 3: ownership will make a change and reinstall different people in
[21:13] Speaker 3: that regard. So I think this is a team that organizationally,
[21:16] Speaker 3: I feel confident in. Famously, they have agonizing reasons as
[21:21] Speaker 3: to why they have never actually summitted Mount Fuji here.
[21:26] Speaker 3: But I think that in terms of teams that are
[21:28] Speaker 3: built to do this to finally get over the hump,
[21:30] Speaker 3: it's not just that I think they are, it's also
[21:34] Speaker 3: that I think.
[21:35] Speaker 4: They have to.
[21:36] Speaker 2: Okay, they have no other choice.
[21:37] Speaker 1: I'm interested when you're thinking about the different factors, and yeah,
[21:41] Speaker 1: they would have been second for me too.
[21:43] Speaker 2: It's mostly about Josh Allen.
[21:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, and just they've done it like they have been
[21:48] Speaker 1: in the divisional round six straight years.
[21:52] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[21:52] Speaker 1: I are you into analytics? A lot of analytics talk
[21:54] Speaker 1: with like the NBA these days, Jalen Brown.
[21:57] Speaker 3: What are you're asking me if I'm if I'm into analytics,
[22:00] Speaker 3: here's something.
[22:00] Speaker 4: You've known me for? How long? Yes, Greg, I'm into analytics.
[22:03] Speaker 1: It's for the listener, you know. Here's some analytics. Six
[22:07] Speaker 1: straight division rounds?
[22:08] Speaker 2: Right? How many teams are in the division rounds? Six?
[22:13] Speaker 4: Grade two?
[22:14] Speaker 2: No? Total? In the NFL?
[22:16] Speaker 1: How many teams make it to the division Oh too, Yeah,
[22:19] Speaker 1: it's the divisional round. I'm saying in the entire NFL,
[22:22] Speaker 1: eight teams? Eight teams?
[22:23] Speaker 2: Oh?
[22:23] Speaker 4: I thought you were saying how many times? Yeah? Ok
[22:26] Speaker 4: So eighteen, you have to rephrase your question.
[22:28] Speaker 1: Dave made it six straight, right, Yes, I would say
[22:32] Speaker 1: analytics would say you do that two more times. That's
[22:34] Speaker 1: eight times your due, you know, yeah, you just you're
[22:37] Speaker 1: just up. If you make eight straight, you're you're bound
[22:40] Speaker 1: to win one of those on.
[22:42] Speaker 2: Average two time.
[22:44] Speaker 3: How many times over the next two weeks do you
[22:47] Speaker 3: think you're going to roast me for misunderstanding your questions?
[22:50] Speaker 1: Not many, because I have I have so many more
[22:53] Speaker 1: vulnerable positions. But I'm curious and we'll keep going. But
[22:57] Speaker 1: I am curious when you were thinking about yeah, ownership quarterback.
[23:04] Speaker 1: To me, this is a different exercise than you know,
[23:07] Speaker 1: just ranking the teams this year. I'm curious how you
[23:09] Speaker 1: slot those because I quarterback back at the top is
[23:14] Speaker 1: yea by a decent amount, the most important I think
[23:17] Speaker 1: for this exercise. I actually think ownership might be second,
[23:22] Speaker 1: just barely ahead of coach and then GM front office.
[23:26] Speaker 1: Sorry to all the you know you gentlemen out there,
[23:30] Speaker 1: that would be lower coach. Coach would be a little
[23:32] Speaker 1: closer to ownership, and then GM would be less.
[23:34] Speaker 3: For me, it was a sliding scale, right, If there's
[23:36] Speaker 3: a proven track record of success or there's a proven
[23:39] Speaker 3: real collaboration with the quarterback, regardless of whether the quarterback
[23:44] Speaker 3: is elite. I think that the quarterback and coach tandem
[23:46] Speaker 3: is a sliding scale when it's not a totally elite quarterback.
[23:50] Speaker 3: And similarly, I think that ownership and executive team are
[23:55] Speaker 3: also a sliding scale, just depending on how good the
[23:57] Speaker 3: quarterback is. So ultimately, the quarterback is absolutely of the
[24:01] Speaker 3: utmost importance for me. But we'll go later on in
[24:05] Speaker 3: this draft. A team that I have sort of in
[24:07] Speaker 3: the middle of all of this, I don't buy into
[24:10] Speaker 3: their head coach at all, but I do buy into
[24:12] Speaker 3: the quarterback big time, and I think that lifts the
[24:14] Speaker 3: floor of the rest of the organization.
[24:16] Speaker 4: So that was the ultimate factor for me.
[24:18] Speaker 1: Speaking of the Chargers are my pick at number three.
[24:23] Speaker 1: Nice ownership, eh yeah, I think you just got to
[24:26] Speaker 1: look at the history, eh at best, Like, yeah, they're
[24:31] Speaker 1: essentially playing another team's theydia and I love that.
[24:36] Speaker 2: But they got the quarterback, they got the coach.
[24:38] Speaker 1: The GM is solid by you know evidence so far,
[24:42] Speaker 1: and obviously Mike McDaniel, you know, maybe gives Herbert a
[24:46] Speaker 1: little bit of a boost to try to like win
[24:48] Speaker 1: this thing. For me this year or next year, maybe
[24:51] Speaker 1: while he's there and before it gets another job, like
[24:53] Speaker 1: they could win now. But even if Jim harbab burns
[24:57] Speaker 1: out at some point, which he has done in the past,
[25:01] Speaker 1: you have Herbert and two young tackles. That feels like
[25:04] Speaker 1: a nice foundation for me to take them.
[25:07] Speaker 2: Off the board. Yeah.
[25:08] Speaker 4: And it's also.
[25:10] Speaker 3: One of the things that I was thinking about when
[25:12] Speaker 3: we are thinking about quarterbacks and the scale above average
[25:16] Speaker 3: to elite, is how many more prime seasons do I
[25:18] Speaker 3: think they have? Because again, they could win it this year,
[25:22] Speaker 3: Some of these teams could be all or nothing this
[25:25] Speaker 3: year over a long period of time, I want to
[25:28] Speaker 3: know that they could repeat this type of excellence as well.
[25:32] Speaker 3: And justin Herbert, to me, that's a minimum five prime
[25:35] Speaker 3: seasons ahead of him in my opinion, and to your point,
[25:38] Speaker 3: the rest of the offensive build, minus a couple of
[25:42] Speaker 3: players here and there, they really are poised to continue
[25:46] Speaker 3: to maximize justin Herbert's window, and I really like it.
[25:49] Speaker 3: I think that with this I would have normally factored
[25:53] Speaker 3: in ownership quite a bit to drop them a little
[25:56] Speaker 3: bit more had it not been for the clear power
[25:59] Speaker 3: dynamic that we saw Jim Harbaugh take on immediately as
[26:02] Speaker 3: he got into that building. So he's he's running the
[26:05] Speaker 3: franchise right. So I feel a little bit more confident
[26:08] Speaker 3: over a long period of time that they can break through.
[26:12] Speaker 1: They've had two great quarterbacks back to back, and they've
[26:14] Speaker 1: been in the playoffs a ton in this century now
[26:18] Speaker 1: where the ownership comes in. Have they maximized that they've
[26:21] Speaker 1: only gotten a one conference title game in that whole time,
[26:23] Speaker 1: a lot of wild card losses and whatnot. The one
[26:27] Speaker 1: major regret, by the way, I have for that quarterback's
[26:30] Speaker 1: draft is I took Herbert over Stafford. And I wouldn't
[26:32] Speaker 1: have done that if I could go get I just
[26:34] Speaker 1: did it.
[26:34] Speaker 4: In the moment you found the horsehead I left in
[26:36] Speaker 4: your bed.
[26:37] Speaker 2: I was wrong.
[26:38] Speaker 1: I should have Stafford fell all the way to seven,
[26:40] Speaker 1: which was stupid. It was just for this season only.
[26:44] Speaker 1: But I can say when I'm wrong. I think that
[26:46] Speaker 1: was the wrong choice. I Erbert at six.
[26:48] Speaker 4: Was not judging, but I was noticing.
[26:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you always are when it comes to Stafford.
[26:52] Speaker 1: All right, you're up with number four.
[26:53] Speaker 4: Okay, I have the Lions here.
[26:56] Speaker 3: I think that it's not only that the Lions have
[26:59] Speaker 3: an incredibly high ceiling and will continue to do so
[27:01] Speaker 3: in the Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes era. It's also
[27:04] Speaker 3: that I trust this new era of their ownership. I
[27:08] Speaker 3: also think that they're pretty solid to very good pretty
[27:13] Speaker 3: much across the board. I think solid to very good coaching.
[27:16] Speaker 3: Dan Campbell had a tough year last year, as we saw,
[27:20] Speaker 3: but I think he hires well. I think he identifies
[27:22] Speaker 3: talent really well. The front office. Every once in a while,
[27:25] Speaker 3: they'll make these decisions in the draft that you're like,
[27:27] Speaker 3: what the heck, and then two years later it makes
[27:29] Speaker 3: more sense as to why they made those decisions. So
[27:32] Speaker 3: I think that solid to very good, including an ownership
[27:35] Speaker 3: across the board, and including at quarterback above average with
[27:39] Speaker 3: a really really good running game, can play some in
[27:42] Speaker 3: a dome, can play some elite football in these key moments.
[27:47] Speaker 3: That's Jared Goff. I think he's got at least five
[27:49] Speaker 3: prime yeers left. All of these buckets were checked for
[27:53] Speaker 3: me in terms of putting them at number four overall here,
[27:57] Speaker 3: and I actually even had him at number three, right
[28:00] Speaker 3: above the charge.
[28:00] Speaker 2: Yeah I might.
[28:01] Speaker 1: You know, I had to pick between two of my
[28:03] Speaker 1: favorites because either way I'm gonna be just wanting to
[28:05] Speaker 1: fully enjoy. I will be happy to lose this one
[28:08] Speaker 1: if the Lions can get there. It was the Goth
[28:10] Speaker 1: versus Herbert factor for me, but in every other way,
[28:14] Speaker 1: the Lions are kind of it's crazy to be in
[28:16] Speaker 1: this world where the Lions are a great example right
[28:19] Speaker 1: now of a successful stable team. Build your buddy. JJ
[28:24] Speaker 1: Jansen said, like he didn't have them that high as
[28:26] Speaker 1: in his interest ranking just because like, oh, we know
[28:28] Speaker 1: who the Lions are.
[28:29] Speaker 2: They're good, and like they're they're boring at this point.
[28:31] Speaker 2: They're boring. Like if you could have.
[28:33] Speaker 1: Told Lions fans that five or six years ago, I
[28:36] Speaker 1: still find them absolutely fascinating that that's a strong choice.
[28:40] Speaker 1: I think it was a strong I think it was
[28:41] Speaker 1: a clear top four. Then it got a little trickier
[28:44] Speaker 1: for me, and I'm gonna go with my gut here,
[28:48] Speaker 1: which is go with what we know now, don't worry
[28:52] Speaker 1: about the fact that Joe Burrow might be an ex
[28:55] Speaker 1: Bengal Eventually. I'm just gonna take them because they do
[28:59] Speaker 1: have Joe Burrow, and I just feel like they are
[29:03] Speaker 1: going to do everything in their power to control his
[29:07] Speaker 1: rights and to keep him playing for them forever. And
[29:09] Speaker 1: the quarterback was the most important person for me, and
[29:13] Speaker 1: ultimately they were one series away. You know, they were
[29:16] Speaker 1: right there. But the ownership and the coaching and the
[29:19] Speaker 1: GM are negatives. Ultimately for me, I could see it
[29:23] Speaker 1: this year though, if, like, if I was picking one
[29:25] Speaker 1: of the teams, you know, to win it this year,
[29:27] Speaker 1: I think they have just as good a chance as
[29:30] Speaker 1: really all these teams that we've listed so far. They're
[29:33] Speaker 1: in that ballpark where these five teams would be. Like, Okay,
[29:36] Speaker 1: I could see it this year, so I will take it.
[29:38] Speaker 1: Because of Joe.
[29:39] Speaker 3: I have them a spot below in terms of my
[29:42] Speaker 3: personal rankings that I did, but I still have them
[29:44] Speaker 3: in tier one because I have the caveat in here. No,
[29:46] Speaker 3: I don't trust the front office, I don't trust ownership,
[29:49] Speaker 3: I don't trust coaching. The quarterback lifts the entire floor
[29:54] Speaker 3: of everything and not only lifts the floor, but puts
[29:56] Speaker 3: them in a competitive position. And so for me, I
[30:00] Speaker 3: agree with you, and I do think he's got several
[30:02] Speaker 3: good seasons, great seasons left, even though he's had some
[30:05] Speaker 3: injury issues.
[30:06] Speaker 4: Which people always seem to we just sort of glossom.
[30:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a fair one.
[30:09] Speaker 3: See, he's got some injury issues, but I do think
[30:13] Speaker 3: that he is when he's healthy and when he's playing,
[30:15] Speaker 3: you know, like the brand of football that we know
[30:17] Speaker 3: him to play. He is such a organizational catalyst that
[30:25] Speaker 3: I still had him in my top six basically now
[30:28] Speaker 3: I had the Bengals at six, but still I had
[30:32] Speaker 3: them because of his abilities, because he is an elite quarterback.
[30:35] Speaker 2: And the ownership.
[30:36] Speaker 1: It's been well documented, you know, some of the difficulties
[30:42] Speaker 1: in the Mike Brown era, and now you look at
[30:46] Speaker 1: the overall record. I mean, they did make three different
[30:49] Speaker 1: Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks, and we're going way
[30:52] Speaker 1: back to like the early eighties and in the mid eighties,
[30:55] Speaker 1: but they have you know, then also made the conference
[30:57] Speaker 1: title game in addition to that super Bowl with Joe Burrow.
[31:00] Speaker 1: So that's recent history that they can overcome some of
[31:02] Speaker 1: this stuff. But as you know, I've been wanting a
[31:04] Speaker 1: coaching change, like they're barely I mean they're actually negative
[31:08] Speaker 1: point differential since Zach Taylor, you know, showed up, and
[31:11] Speaker 1: they're barely positive even over the last five years, which
[31:14] Speaker 1: includes like those good seasons. So I would like a
[31:17] Speaker 1: coaching change, but I think they'll find a way to
[31:19] Speaker 1: keep Joe Burrow long term. All right, So you had
[31:21] Speaker 1: someone higher than the Bengals in your ranking. Yes, I'm
[31:24] Speaker 1: not going to guess who it is because then maybe
[31:26] Speaker 1: it'll spoil who I take. Who is it?
[31:28] Speaker 3: I have the Jaguars, so I would like to pick
[31:31] Speaker 3: the Jaguars at six. I had them at number five,
[31:33] Speaker 3: ahead of the Bengals on my personal rankings, but here
[31:36] Speaker 3: they're going off.
[31:36] Speaker 4: The board at six.
[31:38] Speaker 3: To me, this is about a quarterback who is always
[31:43] Speaker 3: above average but can play elite football, especially when paired
[31:47] Speaker 3: with the correct play caller and schematic guy in Liam Cohen,
[31:52] Speaker 3: who absolutely gives this team an advantage. I think that
[31:55] Speaker 3: Liam Cohen hires really well, which was one thing that
[31:59] Speaker 3: I thought was really really important because we know that
[32:01] Speaker 3: offensive play callers are going to lose their coaches a lot.
[32:03] Speaker 3: I think he hires really well Anthony Campanelli and Grant Yudinsky.
[32:07] Speaker 3: I think that as an ownership group, they've made some mistakes, certainly,
[32:13] Speaker 3: but also they're willing to put up a ton of
[32:15] Speaker 3: money and invest a ton of money into making this
[32:18] Speaker 3: organization competitive. And I do think over time I will
[32:22] Speaker 3: be proven right about the quality of the front office
[32:25] Speaker 3: and what they're building over there. It's not something that
[32:28] Speaker 3: you can just prove in one or two seasons. But
[32:30] Speaker 3: I think overall this organization has already broken through into
[32:35] Speaker 3: the next layer of competitiveness, and I think now it's
[32:40] Speaker 3: all about building consistency and really gearing up to understand
[32:44] Speaker 3: what you are and what you are not to make
[32:46] Speaker 3: it through that next class break of contention, which is
[32:49] Speaker 3: Super Bowl contention. And so I think very much could
[32:52] Speaker 3: see them winning one in the next couple of years.
[32:54] Speaker 1: Ownership I feel good about overall. The coach is a
[32:58] Speaker 1: definite plus. The QBS medium, you know, he's in the middle,
[33:01] Speaker 1: but you're you know, because every every quarterback gets paid
[33:04] Speaker 1: towards the top, you know, that's that's tricky. But the
[33:08] Speaker 1: Hawx just one with Seam Darnold obviously above average.
[33:11] Speaker 4: That's I'm saying, all you need is above average.
[33:13] Speaker 1: Maybe, but like everyone, you can't call everyone above he
[33:16] Speaker 1: is above average.
[33:17] Speaker 3: I would say, yeah, I'm not calling everyone above average.
[33:19] Speaker 3: I'm calling him above average.
[33:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, and CJ. But like I think CJ.
[33:24] Speaker 3: Stroud is above average with an elite upside. That's my
[33:27] Speaker 3: point is CJ. Stroud to me has more long term
[33:32] Speaker 3: elite qualities where I think he is going to as
[33:35] Speaker 3: his career progresses, be an elite in the elite conversation.
[33:38] Speaker 3: In this league, I think we know who Trevor Lawrence
[33:41] Speaker 3: is and who he isn't, and I appreciate that when
[33:43] Speaker 3: he's paired with the right play caller and playing with
[33:45] Speaker 3: confidence like we saw last year when they were absolutely
[33:48] Speaker 3: destroying these teams, I really think that that is a
[33:52] Speaker 3: really good marriage. And similar arguments made for the other
[33:55] Speaker 3: teams we have ranked higher than the Jaguars, including Detroit
[33:58] Speaker 3: and Jared Goff, and including like you know, Josh Allen
[34:02] Speaker 3: and not maybe not being put into such risky positions
[34:06] Speaker 3: and having a play caller who will maximize his abilities.
[34:09] Speaker 1: I don't feel like I know who Trevor Lawrence is
[34:12] Speaker 1: yet still, just because it's so streaky and he played
[34:16] Speaker 1: so well at the end, I think that's who he is, right,
[34:19] Speaker 1: That's always how I've always assumed him to be, and
[34:21] Speaker 1: to me, that made him a pretty average player overall.
[34:24] Speaker 1: He played so well down the stretch last year, and
[34:27] Speaker 1: because it was Liam Cohen, if that's just the new
[34:30] Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence indefinitely, then I would have him even higher
[34:33] Speaker 1: than wherever he ended up on our quarterbacks board. For instance,
[34:36] Speaker 1: I think he went twelve or thirteenth, like he has
[34:38] Speaker 1: a chance to be a top ten guy, but I
[34:40] Speaker 1: had him six, so I had him in a very
[34:42] Speaker 1: similar spot. They of course came out of the gates swinging,
[34:47] Speaker 1: made the conference championship game in their second season and
[34:51] Speaker 1: then also in their fourth season. But they have never
[34:55] Speaker 1: been to a Super Bowl one of the teams, and
[34:57] Speaker 1: of course with Blake Bortles they made it back to
[34:59] Speaker 1: a conference championship. It's never been to Super Bowl. One
[35:01] Speaker 1: of the four teams that have never done that. All right,
[35:04] Speaker 1: I'm up. We're now in the back half of this draft.
[35:09] Speaker 1: This is where it gets a little tricky for me.
[35:12] Speaker 1: I'll go to the Vikings, who are generally in the mix.
[35:15] Speaker 1: I think the Wolf ownership, you could accuse them of
[35:19] Speaker 1: being a little maybe almost two hands off that they're
[35:22] Speaker 1: out of the building, but overall, like they got that
[35:24] Speaker 1: stadium built. I give a little credit for that pat
[35:27] Speaker 1: on the back. The coach is a yes, and so
[35:29] Speaker 1: the offense is a yes. And I care more about
[35:32] Speaker 1: offense than defense. Like they're not a poorly run organization.
[35:37] Speaker 1: Is this current build like that close to winning the
[35:40] Speaker 1: Super Bowl if you've got top ten quarterback play. Yeah,
[35:43] Speaker 1: I don't think you're like that far off in a
[35:45] Speaker 1: draft or two. But it's ultimately like a vote for
[35:49] Speaker 1: Kevin O'Connell here and just the general as teams, cursed
[35:54] Speaker 1: teams go, Like, the Vikings are not the Browns and
[35:56] Speaker 1: the Jets, you know what I mean? Are the frisky team,
[36:01] Speaker 1: to use your words, that'll break your heart in the end,
[36:04] Speaker 1: but at least they're in the mix. So I'm gonna
[36:05] Speaker 1: have some fun here with the Vikings.
[36:07] Speaker 4: I like this pick.
[36:07] Speaker 3: They were the top of my all the rest right
[36:10] Speaker 3: because I do trust long term the organization. I just
[36:14] Speaker 3: don't trust the quarterback position right now, and I don't
[36:18] Speaker 3: trust the decision making around the quarterback position right now.
[36:22] Speaker 3: Once they get the guy that they're going to go
[36:24] Speaker 3: with long term and then he's actually on the field,
[36:27] Speaker 3: then I have all the trusts in the world and
[36:28] Speaker 3: what that's going to look like. It's just the process
[36:30] Speaker 3: of it because I can't trust that yet. They're seven
[36:34] Speaker 3: for me on my board too. They're the top of
[36:36] Speaker 3: the middle tier for me because I really like the
[36:39] Speaker 3: organization overall. I think they have really sound, logical, smart
[36:43] Speaker 3: decision making throughout. I think that to your point, the
[36:47] Speaker 3: coach is an advantage, and I think he hires well.
[36:50] Speaker 3: Brian Flores is one of the best hires made by
[36:52] Speaker 3: any head coach over the last you know some odd seasons,
[36:56] Speaker 3: and I think that retaining talent that is also important.
[37:01] Speaker 3: That shows that this organization is competing and wants to win.
[37:05] Speaker 1: They you know, of course, made all those Super Bowls
[37:08] Speaker 1: and broke their their fans' heart way back in the seventies,
[37:12] Speaker 1: so they're very close to not being on this list,
[37:15] Speaker 1: but it's been a long time since they have been
[37:18] Speaker 1: back there. Of course, the famous missed field goal with
[37:22] Speaker 1: that season with Dante Culpepper that sends them out Gary
[37:29] Speaker 1: Anderson was it. And then getting to the conference championship
[37:33] Speaker 1: game in twenty seventeen and getting the doors blown off
[37:35] Speaker 1: them with case Keenum.
[37:37] Speaker 2: So they have yet to reach the summit.
[37:40] Speaker 1: They would be high on my rankings of teams that
[37:42] Speaker 1: would have the most fun reaction to winning a Super Bowl.
[37:45] Speaker 2: I know, see everything, all right, who's up next for you?
[37:51] Speaker 3: So with pick number eight, I'm going to go with
[37:53] Speaker 3: the Carolina Panthers and my tiers They're the second in
[37:58] Speaker 3: my middle tier of this entire exercise, right, and my
[38:03] Speaker 3: middle tier for me is either or either no quarterback
[38:08] Speaker 3: in terms of the vikings or big questions at quarterback,
[38:11] Speaker 3: which I think is fair that we still are wanting
[38:14] Speaker 3: to see Bryce Young sustain the success that he ended
[38:18] Speaker 3: the season last year with. And then also I like
[38:22] Speaker 3: the direction of the organization that had to be a
[38:24] Speaker 3: quality here that maybe they've had harder times or whatever,
[38:27] Speaker 3: but I can see forward progress. I can see them
[38:30] Speaker 3: building blocks and putting things together in a way that
[38:33] Speaker 3: I agree with that I buy into. I think that
[38:36] Speaker 3: David Tepper, after a lot of bumps along the way
[38:40] Speaker 3: and mistakes along the way in terms of decision making
[38:42] Speaker 3: and pivots and things like that, really has found the
[38:47] Speaker 3: answer here with this trifecta or triumvirent between you know,
[38:52] Speaker 3: Dan Morgan and Brant Tillis and Dave Canalis, and the
[38:55] Speaker 3: way that specifically they all worked together, the way that
[38:58] Speaker 3: they've built out they've take in one of the one
[39:01] Speaker 3: of the franchises that was still so behind almost every
[39:07] Speaker 3: if not every other franchise in the NFL for so
[39:10] Speaker 3: many years into this modern era of football and so
[39:13] Speaker 3: far behind and finally have rebuilt it into something that's
[39:17] Speaker 3: not just makes sense in terms of their infrastructure, analytics
[39:20] Speaker 3: and scouting and the way that they they have their processes,
[39:23] Speaker 3: but also is competitive with some of the better teams
[39:26] Speaker 3: out there. And so I think that when that happens,
[39:28] Speaker 3: you can really really trust the direction of the organization
[39:32] Speaker 3: now you need. They've had some of the most fun
[39:36] Speaker 3: seasons I think we've ever seen in terms of a
[39:38] Speaker 3: run to the super Bowl. That twenty fifteen you know, undefeated,
[39:42] Speaker 3: That Cam Newton season was like one of the most
[39:44] Speaker 3: thing fun things I think any of us have ever watched.
[39:46] Speaker 2: Favored in that game in the Super.
[39:47] Speaker 3: Bowl and heartbreak at the end, right, And so I
[39:50] Speaker 3: think that now though, this is an organization that's not
[39:54] Speaker 3: just sort of a magic moment away, it's an organization
[39:59] Speaker 3: that's the fl is lifted throughout. And I'm just curious
[40:03] Speaker 3: more about the quarterback.
[40:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta squint hard to see them win a
[40:06] Speaker 1: title right now.
[40:07] Speaker 2: I mean that's gonna be.
[40:08] Speaker 1: True for all this is over time. Yeah, that it
[40:10] Speaker 1: is remaining. I didn't write many notes on them because
[40:13] Speaker 1: I just figured.
[40:14] Speaker 2: You were drafting.
[40:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, it's just like Noah, they actually would have
[40:17] Speaker 1: been next up for me to the coach, GM quarterback.
[40:22] Speaker 1: Even ownership if Tepper has learned it's all like, okay,
[40:26] Speaker 1: I'll give you some okay, middle of the pack front
[40:29] Speaker 1: office has potential or something. But to win a title,
[40:32] Speaker 1: you need a lot of things to come together. It's
[40:33] Speaker 1: a good it's a good shout out that that they've
[40:35] Speaker 1: had two of the most entertaining Super Bowl losers, unfortunately
[40:42] Speaker 1: in NFL history, because that that Jake Delome team and
[40:46] Speaker 1: that Super Bowl specifically where they lost to the Patriots,
[40:48] Speaker 1: like they were so close to not being on this list.
[40:50] Speaker 1: Falcons have something in common with them getting close to
[40:54] Speaker 1: the Tom Brady team in the Super Bowl. But they're
[40:57] Speaker 1: starting from scratch essentially now. I'm just making them next
[41:00] Speaker 1: a little bit on the ownership and just they've always
[41:05] Speaker 1: been a little more in the middle, and I know
[41:08] Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter for this current build, but you
[41:11] Speaker 1: have I think good ownership and the you know, the
[41:14] Speaker 1: stadium and everything, and there's.
[41:16] Speaker 2: Not anything that is there right now.
[41:18] Speaker 1: I don't know if it's going to have much to
[41:20] Speaker 1: do with their next Super Bowl or not, but on
[41:22] Speaker 1: a long enough timeline, I feel like they're they're the
[41:25] Speaker 1: horse I'm picking next.
[41:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
[41:27] Speaker 3: As an aside, one of my favorite things about watching
[41:29] Speaker 3: all the World Cup coverage over the last several weeks
[41:32] Speaker 3: is the marveling over the stadiums and when like the
[41:36] Speaker 3: BBC comes in and they'll do like a full on
[41:38] Speaker 3: breakdown of the stadiums. And I watched the one the
[41:40] Speaker 3: BBC did on the Atlanta they're calling it, you know,
[41:43] Speaker 3: the Atlanta stadium right now because of sponsorship rules with FIFA,
[41:48] Speaker 3: and I just loved, you know, of course all the
[41:50] Speaker 3: hits were played, the concessions, yes, the.
[41:53] Speaker 4: Roof, the band around the entire top.
[41:56] Speaker 3: I mean, I just I loved it because these are
[41:58] Speaker 3: all things that were like, yeah, of course I've I mean,
[42:00] Speaker 3: but it's like a modern architectural I mean, it is
[42:03] Speaker 3: a modern architecture marvel.
[42:05] Speaker 4: We're just used to it.
[42:05] Speaker 1: We're going back, We're going back for the super Bowl.
[42:08] Speaker 1: And what if the Falcons win the Super Bowl in
[42:11] Speaker 1: their home stadium and then win me a dinner and
[42:17] Speaker 1: you just having to give me praise on NFL daily that.
[42:20] Speaker 4: Yeah, and do it soon so I don't owe gregor
[42:22] Speaker 4: Kidney please.
[42:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, Well that would be what in a couple of years.
[42:25] Speaker 1: We're going back to Atlanta for the Super Bowl.
[42:27] Speaker 4: Yeah, let's do it all right, Hopefully you're.
[42:29] Speaker 2: Healthy, you have number nine.
[42:31] Speaker 3: Hopefully I'm healthy. Okay, you just picked nine. That you
[42:35] Speaker 3: pick the Falcons, Okay, pick ten. I'm gonna go with
[42:39] Speaker 3: the Tennessee Titans here and this they were the top
[42:44] Speaker 3: of my lower tier, or my lowest tier. That's three
[42:47] Speaker 3: teams that are in that tier. And my lowest tier
[42:51] Speaker 3: has these sort of qualities that make it into what
[42:55] Speaker 3: it is. And how I parse out these teams either
[42:58] Speaker 3: a very young quarterback or no quarter back at all.
[43:00] Speaker 3: So obviously Kim Ward, who I think has a lot
[43:02] Speaker 3: of potential, we just don't know yet. He's so young,
[43:05] Speaker 3: he's so early into his career. And or the team
[43:09] Speaker 3: organization has a history of chaos and dysfunction. They have
[43:13] Speaker 3: a history of significant turnover, whether it's the front office,
[43:15] Speaker 3: the coaching staff, or both. The Titans check those boxes
[43:18] Speaker 3: for me, ownership issues, all those things, you know, needing
[43:22] Speaker 3: to trust, competency, those types of issues that have that
[43:26] Speaker 3: come up with them over and over again. It's just
[43:29] Speaker 3: that I really like Kim Ward and so and I
[43:32] Speaker 3: like the fact that of.
[43:33] Speaker 2: You can see him winning the Super Bowl.
[43:34] Speaker 3: I love that over a long period of time. Yeah,
[43:37] Speaker 3: I mean that's the thing. Is this these none of
[43:38] Speaker 3: these teams in these picks at the bottom here we
[43:42] Speaker 3: can see him doing it like next year, but over
[43:45] Speaker 3: a period of time. I think that Kim ward is
[43:47] Speaker 3: going to be great. And I also think that this
[43:51] Speaker 3: is a team that when I compare it, especially to
[43:54] Speaker 3: the other two that we have left to pick from,
[43:56] Speaker 3: those teams being the Browns and the Cardinals.
[43:58] Speaker 2: Yes, I like that.
[44:00] Speaker 3: I've got their quarterback position figured out. They've got it settled.
[44:02] Speaker 3: The other two do not.
[44:03] Speaker 1: For some reason, I had the Jets written down this
[44:05] Speaker 1: whole time. Sorry to Joe Willie Namath. You know, I
[44:09] Speaker 1: guess I had thirteen teams written out.
[44:10] Speaker 2: I just like you know, Karmicle and cosmically I have
[44:14] Speaker 2: not wanted.
[44:15] Speaker 4: It feels right that they should be on here.
[44:17] Speaker 2: Yes, but good point, they weren't even last on my list. Yeah.
[44:22] Speaker 1: I agree with with everything he said, Jim. You know,
[44:24] Speaker 1: we'll see the coach is okay, QB. I'm not there
[44:27] Speaker 1: yet on cam Warden, and we'll talk about him plenty
[44:30] Speaker 1: of leading into the season.
[44:31] Speaker 2: This is this isn't about that.
[44:32] Speaker 3: But I don't think you have to be there yet
[44:34] Speaker 3: on him. No, I guess, I just, I just I'm talking.
[44:36] Speaker 1: More long terms, right, I'm not even there long term.
[44:39] Speaker 1: I know I'm going to enjoy watching him play football
[44:42] Speaker 1: throughout his career. But if he has a Jamis like career,
[44:47] Speaker 1: or even like a Cutlerish type career that like that
[44:50] Speaker 1: wouldn't surprise me, like the range of outcomes for me,
[44:53] Speaker 1: I don't.
[44:54] Speaker 2: I'm not all the way there yet.
[44:55] Speaker 1: Let's say after like like we have been with some
[44:58] Speaker 1: rookies after their first year, and yet you know, he
[45:01] Speaker 1: had a very difficult circumstance. And if AFC South teams
[45:05] Speaker 1: want to complain about the coverage that they get in general,
[45:07] Speaker 1: I mean, this is the third AFC South team to
[45:09] Speaker 1: come up on this list. This is a little bit
[45:10] Speaker 1: why there's there's no history with this division. I mean,
[45:13] Speaker 1: the Texans have never been to the Super Bowl, the
[45:16] Speaker 1: Jaguars have never been to the Super Bowl. And the Titans,
[45:19] Speaker 1: who have been around the longest and moved you know,
[45:22] Speaker 1: they they've only they they've only made it and haven't
[45:24] Speaker 1: won one. So that's partly why there's no history with
[45:26] Speaker 1: this division. That's fair game.
[45:31] Speaker 2: Let's go to.
[45:32] Speaker 1: The Browns next. You have an ownership that's willing to spend,
[45:38] Speaker 1: then maybe not in a good.
[45:40] Speaker 2: Way, you know.
[45:42] Speaker 1: I think Jimmy Haslam at this point has to wear
[45:44] Speaker 1: the Deshaun Watson contract, but he's willing to spend whether
[45:47] Speaker 1: it's his NBA team now, the Bucks or or the Browns.
[45:51] Speaker 2: They have the the Rams first round pick next year.
[45:54] Speaker 1: I mean, there's not a lot of building blocks that
[45:57] Speaker 1: I would think would be there if they win a
[45:59] Speaker 1: Super Bowl in the next six or seven years. If
[46:02] Speaker 1: you squint hard, Yeah, could Carson Sweessner in his seventh
[46:06] Speaker 1: or eighth year still be there? And Fannin is there
[46:09] Speaker 1: and some of these draft picks like are part of
[46:11] Speaker 1: the team that turn around.
[46:12] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[46:13] Speaker 1: Maybe I just like them essentially a little bit better
[46:16] Speaker 1: than the Cardinals.
[46:18] Speaker 3: They're Devil's advocate because I have them ranked here as
[46:22] Speaker 3: well at eleven. I know that their argument, whether or
[46:28] Speaker 3: not it's creditable or not, regardless of what we think
[46:33] Speaker 3: their argument will be after this season that they are
[46:36] Speaker 3: a quarterback away, their argument will be that they've drafted
[46:41] Speaker 3: well enough over the last two seasons and acquired enough
[46:44] Speaker 3: capital to move around and possibly get that quarterback or
[46:47] Speaker 3: whatever they're going to do. They will argue that that
[46:51] Speaker 3: roster is primed and ready to drop in either a
[46:56] Speaker 3: rookie quarterback that they draft or somebody that they bundle
[46:59] Speaker 3: picks and trade for, where they will make that argument.
[47:01] Speaker 4: That their roster is that player away.
[47:03] Speaker 3: At that point, I think that you could see that
[47:06] Speaker 3: you could make an argument for that. It's just that
[47:08] Speaker 3: you could also make an argument for this is the Browns.
[47:11] Speaker 3: We've seen them be a quarterback away or in their minds,
[47:13] Speaker 3: a quarterback away multiple times. We've seen them either discard
[47:18] Speaker 3: the wrong quarterback or acquire the wrong quarterback in disastrous
[47:22] Speaker 3: fashion with those results, you know, in the case of
[47:26] Speaker 3: Deshaun Watson, and so I don't have an easy time
[47:30] Speaker 3: believing their argument. I understand why they would make it,
[47:33] Speaker 3: and I like their last two draft classes, but I
[47:35] Speaker 3: don't trust it because I haven't seen proof. So that's
[47:38] Speaker 3: where my thing is, Like, I got them near the bottom.
[47:40] Speaker 3: Regardless of how I think they are making, in my opinion,
[47:43] Speaker 3: forward progress, I don't trust that they'll sustain it. So
[47:46] Speaker 3: that's where I'm kind of at with them.
[47:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's an ownership group that had a
[47:50] Speaker 1: three year window at one point where they totaled four
[47:53] Speaker 1: winds combined hot damp. So look at the lap two years,
[47:57] Speaker 1: it's like they're great Tingles eight wins and the last
[48:01] Speaker 1: two years combined, and yeah, that's all old stuff.
[48:03] Speaker 2: But this is this is the exercise we're doing here.
[48:06] Speaker 2: They got it.
[48:07] Speaker 1: They got a shot with this group to become relevant,
[48:11] Speaker 1: to win a super Bowl.
[48:12] Speaker 2: It's a long way to go.
[48:13] Speaker 1: They've they've never been to the conference championship as the
[48:17] Speaker 1: New Browns.
[48:18] Speaker 2: Technically we're we're using all the old Browns.
[48:21] Speaker 1: You know, they got the stats and whatnot, and so
[48:22] Speaker 1: then you get the heartbreak of the conference championship game losses.
[48:25] Speaker 2: But the New Browns have not been to the divisional round?
[48:30] Speaker 2: Is that right? Yeah? They have not.
[48:31] Speaker 1: They have not been to the divisional round. Yes, all right,
[48:34] Speaker 1: you got the you got your Cardinals or last.
[48:36] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[48:37] Speaker 1: On a list of teams that have yet to reach
[48:39] Speaker 1: the summit, they, according to us, are the furthest away
[48:42] Speaker 1: from the summit.
[48:43] Speaker 3: Yes, so I'll just go back to my qualifications for
[48:47] Speaker 3: this tier at which they are at the bottom. They're
[48:50] Speaker 3: in the early phases of a longer term rebuild. They
[48:52] Speaker 3: either have a very young quarterback or no quarterback. In
[48:55] Speaker 3: this case, no quarterback. Not only no quarterback, but no
[48:57] Speaker 3: visible or apparent plan for firing that player, especially with
[49:01] Speaker 3: their draft pick, their top five pick this year, and
[49:05] Speaker 3: or history of chaos and dysfunction, history of significant turnover,
[49:09] Speaker 3: whether at the coaching level or the front office level
[49:13] Speaker 3: or both.
[49:13] Speaker 4: Check check check check check check. There's the Cardinals.
[49:16] Speaker 3: Yeah, it bums me out because I remember, I remember,
[49:22] Speaker 3: and I was heartbroken, broken, and Kurt Warner was gonna
[49:27] Speaker 3: get the get it done and seal the just fantastical
[49:31] Speaker 3: storybook football moment that you know, enamored so many of us,
[49:36] Speaker 3: and it just it and and I learned that I'm
[49:40] Speaker 3: only set up for for heartbreak.
[49:43] Speaker 2: That was such a miracle team.
[49:45] Speaker 1: I've said it before that I've never been more disappointed
[49:49] Speaker 1: at a Super Bowl that a team lost that covered
[49:51] Speaker 1: that team for nbcsports dot Com that week than than
[49:55] Speaker 1: that specific Cardinals team.
[49:56] Speaker 2: I mean, there's a miracle that they were there.
[49:58] Speaker 1: They were blown out like multiple times to end their
[50:01] Speaker 1: regular season. They sneak in at nine and seven, and
[50:04] Speaker 1: then they played electric football for three rounds and three
[50:09] Speaker 1: and a half quarters and gave up a drive to
[50:11] Speaker 1: a really great Steelers team, so that that'll always break
[50:13] Speaker 1: my heart. I'm almost more surprised that the Carson Palmer
[50:17] Speaker 1: Bruce Arians Cardinals did not win a Those were legit teams.
[50:22] Speaker 1: Of course, they made it to the conference championship game
[50:24] Speaker 1: one time. But right now they're They're about as far
[50:27] Speaker 1: away as you can be.
[50:28] Speaker 2: But hopefully we're proven wrong.
[50:30] Speaker 1: It would be crazy if you win this thing with
[50:33] Speaker 1: your hometown Cardinals as the last pick.
[50:36] Speaker 3: Although they taught me again at a formative age that
[50:40] Speaker 3: the thing that would be cool is probably not going
[50:42] Speaker 3: to happen.
[50:43] Speaker 4: Probably, Okay, we should go over our picks, right.
[50:46] Speaker 2: We should.
[50:47] Speaker 1: The order of the draft as written by Jordan, thank
[50:52] Speaker 1: you for housekeeping here. I had the Texans first. Then
[50:56] Speaker 1: Jordan takes the Bills. I have the Chargers with the
[51:00] Speaker 1: third overall pick. Jordan then has the Lions. I have
[51:02] Speaker 1: the Bengals. Jordan has the Jags.
[51:04] Speaker 2: That was six. I have the Vikings. You have the Panthers.
[51:08] Speaker 1: I took the Falcons, you took the Titans. My last
[51:12] Speaker 1: pick number eleven was the Browns, and you had the Cardinals.
[51:14] Speaker 1: So if any of those teams win a Super Bowl.
[51:19] Speaker 1: I mean, we don't even have to keep still be
[51:21] Speaker 1: doing a show if for some reason we're not, like
[51:23] Speaker 1: if podcasting ends for everyone, because that's the only white
[51:26] Speaker 1: way that this could happen. Like, we will still be
[51:28] Speaker 1: working in football, and you will still owe that dinner
[51:31] Speaker 1: and in public praise for me, even if it's not
[51:34] Speaker 1: the Viking, even if it's not until the Vikings or no,
[51:38] Speaker 1: the Vikings win in like twenty forty seven, if it
[51:40] Speaker 1: took that long for some reason.
[51:41] Speaker 3: I'm gonna build your confidence up so much only to
[51:45] Speaker 3: crush your spirit, and then I'm gonna make you get
[51:47] Speaker 3: a matching tattoo with me.
[51:48] Speaker 2: Okay, a matching tattoo.
[51:50] Speaker 1: I would do that, especially when my Texans pull it
[51:53] Speaker 1: off this year and you can't even fully enjoy it
[51:56] Speaker 1: because you know.
[51:59] Speaker 2: That I won that pick fair and square. All Right,
[52:01] Speaker 2: that's it. I'm back. We're back. We are still doing
[52:05] Speaker 2: three shows a week for now.
[52:07] Speaker 1: We're not bringing the daily fully back to NFL Daily
[52:10] Speaker 1: quite yet, but teams are heading back to training camp
[52:14] Speaker 1: next week, and so are we in terms of really
[52:17] Speaker 1: fully bringing back the show.
[52:19] Speaker 2: We will be back with a little bit of a mailbag.
[52:21] Speaker 1: If you're listening to this, and it's before Tuesday afternoon.
[52:24] Speaker 1: Send us your questions on social media and we'll try
[52:27] Speaker 1: to answer them. With Jordan rodrieg and Patrick Claybah we
[52:31] Speaker 1: will see them
