[0:05] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're really trying to believe
[0:08] Speaker 1: there's no such thing as a Chargers curse. I'm Greg Rosenthal.
[0:12] Speaker 1: I'm here in the Chris Westling podcast studio. This is
[0:15] Speaker 1: your August eighteenth, Tuesday Camp Buzz.
[0:19] Speaker 2: With Nick Shook.
[0:20] Speaker 1: We get you updated on all the latest news from
[0:23] Speaker 1: all thirty two training camps. And I hate starting with
[0:27] Speaker 1: another Chargers injury.
[0:28] Speaker 2: I was trying to.
[0:29] Speaker 1: Ignore it, Nick, as I saw the injury lists for
[0:33] Speaker 1: the Chargers grow and grow a little more and grow
[0:35] Speaker 1: a little more. Didn't know if anyone were serious. We
[0:37] Speaker 1: weren't going to talk about it. But on Tuesday they're
[0:40] Speaker 1: starting center Tyler Biattish, who was kind of the centerpiece
[0:45] Speaker 1: of a lot of their hopes on the offensive line,
[0:47] Speaker 1: was carted off with what appears to be a serious injury.
[0:51] Speaker 1: And I can no longer ignore that the Chargers are
[0:55] Speaker 1: unfortunately charging again in August, which just means a lot
[0:58] Speaker 1: of injuries.
[0:59] Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's probably it affects the worst portion of
[1:02] Speaker 3: this team given their history with offensive line injuries. It
[1:05] Speaker 3: also comes at a very I mean, it's always unfortunate,
[1:08] Speaker 3: but it's especially unfortunate because Jim Harbaugh had legitimately just
[1:11] Speaker 3: said that him that Biadash and Justin Herbert were going
[1:14] Speaker 3: to play a little bit in their next preseason game
[1:15] Speaker 3: because he wanted them to get reps together in live action. Well,
[1:18] Speaker 3: that's off the table because of things like this. But
[1:20] Speaker 3: that's also just how precarious training camp can be. It
[1:23] Speaker 3: can be a very fickle thing where one minute you
[1:26] Speaker 3: think you're on track for all these good things, the
[1:27] Speaker 3: next minute you're losing your starting center for who knows
[1:30] Speaker 3: how long.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, just the video of the injury. This was part
[1:35] Speaker 1: of a joint practice with the forty nine ers. Other
[1:38] Speaker 1: players were injured during the practice. But it does it
[1:41] Speaker 1: does not look good, and that is such a difficult
[1:43] Speaker 1: position to fill, especially for this Chargers team. So we'll
[1:47] Speaker 1: see what kind of adjustments that they want to make
[1:50] Speaker 1: to their starting lineup. When I said, I've been ignoring
[1:53] Speaker 1: some of the injury reports, like Trey Harris the receiver,
[1:57] Speaker 1: as in practice in a few days, a key messator
[2:00] Speaker 1: who's had a great camp hasn't been practicing. There's been
[2:03] Speaker 1: Quentin Johnston hasn't been practicing a lot. And then he
[2:06] Speaker 1: did return to practice for this joint practice, and then
[2:08] Speaker 1: left it hobbling. Rayshon Slater is the most important one
[2:12] Speaker 1: of that entire group coming back from a really serious injury,
[2:16] Speaker 1: and he's been out for a couple of weeks now.
[2:18] Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh did say they expect Slater back sometime around
[2:22] Speaker 1: this weekend. So there's a little bit of good news.
[2:25] Speaker 1: And if you wanted some other good news, reportedly Justin
[2:27] Speaker 1: Herbert was out there putting on a show. So you know,
[2:30] Speaker 1: one injury does not ruin an off season of optimism
[2:35] Speaker 1: about Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert together. And so I'm
[2:39] Speaker 1: going to try to stay optimistic. And it's gonna be hard, Nick,
[2:41] Speaker 1: because the way we've structured this show, we're just going
[2:44] Speaker 1: to start with all the injury updates first and then
[2:47] Speaker 1: get to the rest later. Mike Evans quietly hasn't been
[2:50] Speaker 1: able to put together many back to back practices at
[2:54] Speaker 1: forty nine ers camp, and he left this practice too,
[2:57] Speaker 1: and they're pretty thin at wide receiver, and now it's
[3:00] Speaker 1: starting to get a little on my radar that we've
[3:02] Speaker 1: always assumed Mike Evans is going to be healthy. Last
[3:04] Speaker 1: year was a little bit of a fluke injury, but
[3:06] Speaker 1: he struggled to stay on the field this camp as well.
[3:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, he's had been dealing with quad injury. He had
[3:12] Speaker 3: a history of hamstring issues, you know. More recently he
[3:15] Speaker 3: had broken his collarbone. The litany of injuries is quite
[3:18] Speaker 3: long with him. And to hear about this which he
[3:21] Speaker 3: had he was had a wrap of you know, ice
[3:23] Speaker 3: after this practice and you know obviously was not participating
[3:27] Speaker 3: through the end of it. It's just not encouraging, especially
[3:29] Speaker 3: for somebody of his age who has been this lee
[3:31] Speaker 3: for a long time, who you know, is destined for
[3:34] Speaker 3: a place in Canton and was seen as a massive
[3:36] Speaker 3: addition to a Ford and Ers offense that already lost
[3:39] Speaker 3: Ricky Petersoll.
[3:40] Speaker 4: So look, you can.
[3:41] Speaker 3: Continue with the conspiracies about stub substation as much as
[3:43] Speaker 3: you want, but they weren't even there. No, we're down
[3:46] Speaker 3: you know, a charger's house. Okay, So it's unfortunate.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Maybe that's uh haunted as well.
[3:53] Speaker 3: I hope nobody posted a picture of a giant like
[3:55] Speaker 3: terminal of of elect like just electric wil like power
[3:59] Speaker 3: lines behind them, like, oh, I see why they.
[4:00] Speaker 1: Have they do have the train going by. I don't
[4:04] Speaker 1: I don't think that can create any issues. It's actually
[4:06] Speaker 1: very scenic to just see the the MTA train, you know,
[4:10] Speaker 1: going by. I got my tap cards. I'm ready to
[4:12] Speaker 1: I want to ride that train to practice one day.
[4:15] Speaker 1: All right, So we'll we'll hit these injuries. We'll hit
[4:18] Speaker 1: a couple of veteran signings. We got Keenan Allen back
[4:21] Speaker 1: in the league, got Von Miller back in the league,
[4:24] Speaker 1: and we'll get everyone you know set for the rest
[4:26] Speaker 1: of the week. But the way I think about these injuries,
[4:29] Speaker 1: if you're drafting in fantasy, for instance, it doesn't mean
[4:32] Speaker 1: you have to panic, but I think it's good to
[4:34] Speaker 1: know about them because a lot of times these injuries,
[4:36] Speaker 1: like Breese Hall's injuries, injury where its positioned is oh,
[4:41] Speaker 1: good news, Briess Hall should be ready for week one.
[4:45] Speaker 1: I look at it more like not the best news.
[4:47] Speaker 1: That bris Hall, you know, suffered a growing injury in practice,
[4:51] Speaker 1: and that's the way his season is going to start,
[4:53] Speaker 1: coming off back to back to back pretty heavy workload seasons.
[4:57] Speaker 1: Especially knowing Aaron Glenn has been very, very optimistic when
[5:00] Speaker 1: it comes to injuries in the pass. He also says
[5:02] Speaker 1: Kenyan Sadek his tight end is going to be ready
[5:04] Speaker 1: for Week one. We'll see either way, a groin strain,
[5:08] Speaker 1: which is a tricky injury, is going to keep Bryce
[5:10] Speaker 1: Preese haul out for the rest of the preseason, much
[5:13] Speaker 1: of camp, and they're hopeful he'll be back out there
[5:16] Speaker 1: against the Titans in Week one.
[5:18] Speaker 3: Yeah, it was good, you know, it was optimism coming
[5:21] Speaker 3: from Aaron Glenn when the injury happened yesterday. Two to
[5:23] Speaker 3: three weeks is not a terrible, you know, timeline for
[5:26] Speaker 3: a running back. But given the fact that they just
[5:29] Speaker 3: franchised and then paid him and you expect him to
[5:32] Speaker 3: be somebody who's going to produce a thousand yards on
[5:33] Speaker 3: the ground, which he just broke a thousand yards for
[5:35] Speaker 3: the first time last season, it's not the most encouraging thing.
[5:38] Speaker 3: And it also makes you think about your death of
[5:40] Speaker 3: your backfield. They have Braylen Allen coming off of an
[5:42] Speaker 3: injury in that backfield as well, very much a different
[5:44] Speaker 3: style of running back. But so you hope that like, okay, well,
[5:47] Speaker 3: maybe two to three weeks is just like extra time
[5:49] Speaker 3: to heal and really get ready for the regular season.
[5:51] Speaker 3: There's no real reason that he needs to be on
[5:52] Speaker 3: the field during the preseason anyway. But for a team that,
[5:55] Speaker 3: as we've discussed maybe more offensive reliant than they want
[5:59] Speaker 3: to be.
[5:59] Speaker 1: It's not the news either, No, and it's a groin strain.
[6:02] Speaker 1: It's it's just that it's one of those injuries that
[6:06] Speaker 1: like you just gotta get it to one hundred percent
[6:08] Speaker 1: before you return, or pushing that right that it's a
[6:13] Speaker 1: little bit scary. While we're on running backs, I should
[6:15] Speaker 1: have mentioned with Christian McCaffrey. The speculation, which I've now
[6:18] Speaker 1: seen repeated in a few areas, started with Mike Florio
[6:21] Speaker 1: at Pro Football Talk that Christian McCaffrey has been out
[6:24] Speaker 1: of practice potentially looking for more money in his contract.
[6:29] Speaker 1: It's an interesting it's an interesting story. I haven't seen
[6:33] Speaker 1: anyone report it. Usually it's not speculated about unless someone
[6:37] Speaker 1: has a clue that would actually make me feel better
[6:40] Speaker 1: about drafting Christian McCaffrey in fantasy leagues if he's sitting
[6:43] Speaker 1: out because it's contract related and not some weird vague
[6:46] Speaker 1: body soreness tightness, who knows. Let's go to an injury
[6:49] Speaker 1: which we just keep updating on the show, but because
[6:53] Speaker 1: it keeps getting worse. Jordan Tyson, the rookie Saints wide receiver,
[6:57] Speaker 1: is now expected to miss about two months at least
[7:01] Speaker 1: all of September, and we'll see when he returns for
[7:05] Speaker 1: the regular season. So they're putting on a pretty long
[7:08] Speaker 1: timeline for a hamstring strain, and to me, that means
[7:13] Speaker 1: Chris o'lave, like, you're back to what you were doing
[7:15] Speaker 1: last year. De von vle step right up, like you're
[7:18] Speaker 1: a big part of this offense. And then Juwan Johnson
[7:21] Speaker 1: is a name I see going pretty late in fantasy
[7:23] Speaker 1: leagues who could very easily be the number two pass
[7:26] Speaker 1: catcher on this Saints team.
[7:28] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[7:28] Speaker 3: I'm a big Juwan Johnson guy and have been for
[7:30] Speaker 3: a while, especially when they lacked other legitimate playmakers in
[7:33] Speaker 3: their pass catching unit. Right, And that's fine, but this
[7:36] Speaker 3: does kind of dampen the optimism to myself and some
[7:38] Speaker 3: others have carried into the season regarding the Saints just
[7:40] Speaker 3: because you have one lass weapon.
[7:41] Speaker 4: And it's also the nature of the injury.
[7:43] Speaker 3: You know, kind of talked about it with Mike Evans,
[7:45] Speaker 3: But hamstrings are the most tricky of all of them
[7:48] Speaker 3: because one small, you know, flare up can set you
[7:51] Speaker 3: back a long time, which is why I think this
[7:53] Speaker 3: timeline is so long.
[7:54] Speaker 4: It's also super disconcerting with Jordan.
[7:55] Speaker 3: Tyson, because that was the knock on him coming out
[7:58] Speaker 3: of Arizona State was that he had this length the
[7:59] Speaker 3: injury history. He hasn't completed a full season since high school,
[8:02] Speaker 3: and he's it's not a toughness thing. It's just a
[8:04] Speaker 3: matter of if he continues to get hurt. So you hope
[8:06] Speaker 3: that the two month timeline gives him plenty of time
[8:08] Speaker 3: to fully heal, like the growing to get it back
[8:11] Speaker 3: to one hundred percent, and then you hope, Okay, now
[8:13] Speaker 3: he can hit the ground running and find his place
[8:16] Speaker 3: in this core. But it is it's disconcerting for a
[8:18] Speaker 3: rookie who you were coming into the season with high
[8:20] Speaker 3: expectations for and they're going to have to adjust.
[8:22] Speaker 2: You would you change your Saints to in the division prediction? No?
[8:25] Speaker 3: No, because they're in the worst vision football and that's
[8:28] Speaker 3: Tyler Shuck baby, Come.
[8:29] Speaker 1: On, Bucks fans. Baker Mayfield must be listening to NFL
[8:33] Speaker 1: Daily and Shook's opinion and power rankings, because he got
[8:36] Speaker 1: on the horn today and was like, Oh, everyone's prick
[8:39] Speaker 1: has to be under five hundred this year.
[8:41] Speaker 3: I see that definitely a shot at me, but it's
[8:43] Speaker 3: definitely a shot.
[8:44] Speaker 1: At me talking about Shook Baker's locked in, you know,
[8:49] Speaker 1: former teammates with the Browns sort.
[8:51] Speaker 4: Of, Yeah, not exactly. It's hard things together.
[8:54] Speaker 1: It's it's hard not to think Jordan Tyson Odell Beckham
[8:57] Speaker 1: in a way. And that's I'm going to be positive
[8:59] Speaker 1: here because that's the type of player he is and
[9:02] Speaker 1: the way Nick Underhill, who covers the Saints, said he
[9:05] Speaker 1: was performing at camp where he like looked like maybe
[9:08] Speaker 1: the best player on the field, like like was just
[9:11] Speaker 1: dominating Odell Beckham is the best case scenario when it
[9:14] Speaker 1: comes to rookie hamstring injuries. It's easy to forget. He
[9:17] Speaker 1: missed the first big chunk of his rookie season and
[9:21] Speaker 1: much of training camp with the hamstring injury. And he
[9:24] Speaker 1: came out in whatever week it was, four, five, six,
[9:26] Speaker 1: I don't even remember, and he suddenly was the best
[9:29] Speaker 1: rookie receiver we had seen in a long time. So
[9:31] Speaker 1: that that's the dream if you're a Saints fan. Let's
[9:33] Speaker 1: go to the Rams. Pokinakua, Miles Garrett still out. They
[9:38] Speaker 1: said pokin A Coua was likely to return this week.
[9:41] Speaker 2: He didn't. They're not just.
[9:42] Speaker 1: Sitting these guys for no reason because Matthew Stafford, you know,
[9:47] Speaker 1: sat for all a camp last year and it was
[9:49] Speaker 1: the Rams, and they're very careful. It makes me a
[9:51] Speaker 1: little less concerned about these two guys, but both are
[9:54] Speaker 1: likely to return next week. Sean McVay says. Aaron Donald
[9:58] Speaker 1: also did another workout with the team. No update on
[10:00] Speaker 1: when he's returning. Are you getting like a little bit
[10:03] Speaker 1: spooked about Nikua and Garrett?
[10:06] Speaker 3: Well, Miles because he it's knee swelling and he doesn't
[10:09] Speaker 3: really have a history with me, and She's like if
[10:11] Speaker 3: it was related to the shoulder, I'd be like, Okay, well,
[10:13] Speaker 3: he's dealt with that for years. I don't know if
[10:15] Speaker 3: I would necessarily say spooked. I would just say keep
[10:18] Speaker 3: an eye on it, you know, hashtag noticing. But when
[10:21] Speaker 3: it comes to Pukah, like between the two guys, you
[10:23] Speaker 3: don't need Miles Garrett training camp. He's gonna Fine's gonna
[10:25] Speaker 3: be Miles Garrett, who would have who a very good
[10:27] Speaker 3: player younger. I would still like him on the field
[10:30] Speaker 3: getting some reps for you know, here and there. The
[10:32] Speaker 3: good thing about the Rams, and this is not to
[10:34] Speaker 3: like take some sort of positive slant with them that
[10:37] Speaker 3: oh the Rams, they'll be fine. But they really will
[10:39] Speaker 3: be fine because not a lot has really changed. And
[10:42] Speaker 3: if anything, you're giving Matthew Stafford reps with other guys
[10:44] Speaker 3: that are gonna be playing around Pooka and you'll get
[10:46] Speaker 3: you know, you'll you'll receive the positive benefits from that.
[10:49] Speaker 3: But would I like to see them healthy at this point? Absolutely,
[10:51] Speaker 3: I'm just not the most concerned right now.
[10:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, I just like to point it out, like the
[10:55] Speaker 1: plan is never for these guys to you know, sit
[10:57] Speaker 1: out a couple of weeks of camp with an injury,
[10:59] Speaker 1: So it's worth noting I wouldn't change my Puka stock
[11:03] Speaker 1: evaluation for this year yet at this point. Kyle Manungai,
[11:07] Speaker 1: the backup running back for the Bears that we mentioned
[11:09] Speaker 1: his injury a couple of days ago on the show,
[11:11] Speaker 1: he is likely to be out a couple of weeks.
[11:13] Speaker 1: Similar to Bresee Hall, I think they're trying to get
[11:15] Speaker 1: him ready for week one. We'll see Emica Abuka is
[11:18] Speaker 1: now uncertain because of his toe injury to be ready
[11:23] Speaker 1: for week one. According to Todd Bowles, they've taken a
[11:26] Speaker 1: couple hits. Nick Jalen McMillan, their third receiver, has been
[11:30] Speaker 1: out basically for all of camp. His return is uncertain,
[11:33] Speaker 1: and the fact that Bowles is noncommittal to Abuka playing
[11:37] Speaker 1: Week one I think shows how serious it is. They
[11:40] Speaker 1: really need Chris Godwin to be a big factor here
[11:43] Speaker 1: for the Bucks.
[11:44] Speaker 3: Well, now it's Chris Godwin and Tess Johnson and whoever
[11:46] Speaker 3: else is on this depth chart.
[11:48] Speaker 2: Went, let's go ted Hurst, Baby, let's go.
[11:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, you also go with Ted Hurst.
[11:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, and he went from being one of the deepest
[11:54] Speaker 3: receiving cores in the NFL last year to a group
[11:59] Speaker 3: now that is Chris Godwin and whoever else. For now,
[12:03] Speaker 3: I'm more concerned about the fact that Abuka the way
[12:06] Speaker 3: that his back half of last year happened, you know,
[12:09] Speaker 3: dealing with injury and kind of tailing off. I would
[12:11] Speaker 3: like for him to come in healthy and not dealing
[12:12] Speaker 3: with this type of thing. But again, you run this
[12:14] Speaker 3: stuff with training camp all the time, So now they
[12:16] Speaker 3: just have to make do with what they have until
[12:17] Speaker 3: they can get a little bit healthier.
[12:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's disappointing. And yeah, he's a guy, and
[12:24] Speaker 1: look it's this time of season. I hate to bring
[12:25] Speaker 1: everything back to fantasy. We're going to do a fantasy
[12:27] Speaker 1: show with Josh Norris later in the week. But he's
[12:30] Speaker 1: a guy that I'm seeing getting drafted really early. I
[12:33] Speaker 1: did not like where he was getting drafted even before
[12:36] Speaker 1: this injury.
[12:37] Speaker 2: Abuka.
[12:38] Speaker 1: I'm sure this will sink his value a little bit,
[12:40] Speaker 1: but I just thought it was going to be more
[12:41] Speaker 1: of a spread the wealth offense. I wasn't assuming Abuka
[12:44] Speaker 1: just like slot him in as your number one twelve
[12:46] Speaker 1: hundred yards. We'll see a couple other receiver injuries no
[12:49] Speaker 1: one's really paying any attention to for some reason. Michael
[12:52] Speaker 1: Pittman's been out with a leg injury for at least
[12:55] Speaker 1: a week and is going to miss another week. DK Metcalf.
[12:58] Speaker 1: They won't even say what he's at with hashtag noticing
[13:02] Speaker 1: that contract related. I have no idea. I just I
[13:05] Speaker 1: don't know. They just aren't saying what he's out with.
[13:07] Speaker 1: He's out out least another week. I don't think it's
[13:09] Speaker 1: contract related. So that Mike McCarthy pointed that out. Keon
[13:12] Speaker 1: Coleman showed up to Bill's practice in a walking boot.
[13:16] Speaker 1: That's not a good sign. Taekwon Thornton, the receiver for
[13:19] Speaker 1: the Chiefs, left on a cart. I hate that I
[13:24] Speaker 1: gave Keon Coleman, the great Omen with the help of
[13:27] Speaker 1: my friend Eric Roberts for opening the new stadium with
[13:31] Speaker 1: a touchdown, and then he shows up to the next
[13:35] Speaker 1: practice in a walking boot.
[13:36] Speaker 2: Not a good Omen.
[13:37] Speaker 4: Well, it was a great play.
[13:41] Speaker 3: I love the Falehorn. The price is right fail Horn.
[13:44] Speaker 3: It was a great play that he made in that
[13:45] Speaker 3: game to catch that touchdown. It was great play by
[13:47] Speaker 3: Josh Allen as well. But he did sprain toe foot
[13:50] Speaker 3: area in that game. So with everything that's good, when
[13:53] Speaker 3: it comes to Keon Coleman, there's a little bit of unfortunate,
[13:56] Speaker 3: a little bit of bad. But the boot, it could
[13:58] Speaker 3: be worse. Right now, it's a big season for him.
[14:01] Speaker 3: Let's wait and see.
[14:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, and these Steelers receiver injuries, I'm not concerned until
[14:06] Speaker 1: they let me be more concerned. But when once a
[14:09] Speaker 1: guy's out for a week and a half, two plus
[14:11] Speaker 1: two weeks, like it is worth noting. Zadaria Smith is
[14:14] Speaker 1: a veteran pass rushalon who's bounced around the league quite
[14:16] Speaker 1: a bit lately, had his best days with the Packers,
[14:19] Speaker 1: but he's kind of like the poor Man's Clowney, Jedevian Clowney,
[14:23] Speaker 1: and that like he shows up and he gets production.
[14:25] Speaker 1: I said the other day on the show he was
[14:27] Speaker 1: expected to sign with the Browns. That was according to
[14:29] Speaker 1: Mary Kate Cabot. He actually signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
[14:33] Speaker 1: He got six million dollars like base salary. At this
[14:36] Speaker 1: point in the off season, everyone's using the Browns. It
[14:40] Speaker 1: seems like to raise the price. Yeah, yeah, not great.
[14:46] Speaker 3: It's hilarious because the Browns are now over to on
[14:49] Speaker 3: trying to bring in guys that used to play for them,
[14:50] Speaker 3: that at our edge rushers in the NFL.
[14:53] Speaker 4: They both went to places where they have ties.
[14:55] Speaker 3: Jenevian Clowney goes back to Houston, the team the drafted him.
[14:57] Speaker 3: Zadarius Smith goes to Cleveland, looks around and goes, wait,
[14:59] Speaker 3: Kevin's fans, he's not here anymore. I'm gonna go join
[15:01] Speaker 3: Kevin Stefanski's team in Atlanta, where they also need an
[15:03] Speaker 3: edge rusher because you know, they're obviously down one of,
[15:06] Speaker 3: if not both, of their first round picks from last year,
[15:09] Speaker 3: and so it makes sense from a football perspective. I'm
[15:13] Speaker 3: just glad that he got He's getting a job. The
[15:15] Speaker 3: guy that basically walked away from football and decided no
[15:17] Speaker 3: you know what, I'm coming back, and and so he
[15:19] Speaker 3: goes and finds a co coach that he's familiar with.
[15:21] Speaker 4: We'll see what happened.
[15:22] Speaker 5: Here.
[15:22] Speaker 1: Here are their pass rushers in Atlanta. It's Samson, ebicom
[15:25] Speaker 1: Zadarias Smith, brieln Trice, Zizo Julari another former Brown Cam Thomas.
[15:33] Speaker 2: That's not a good group.
[15:34] Speaker 4: Yeah, boss Jalen Walker, and we'll see what happens to
[15:36] Speaker 4: James Spears.
[15:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's out half the season. N I'm the Mattabeke
[15:40] Speaker 1: is a all pro level talent for the Ravens. We
[15:43] Speaker 1: were excited to hear was not retiring because of his
[15:45] Speaker 1: neck injury. That wasn't on the pup list to start camp.
[15:49] Speaker 1: Sometimes with these initial reports we get a little over
[15:52] Speaker 1: excited and then we find out a few weeks later
[15:55] Speaker 1: he has not had any contact work, he's been very
[15:57] Speaker 1: limited at practice, and that he could be a few
[15:59] Speaker 1: week weeks away from having any contact work. So just
[16:04] Speaker 1: something to keep an eye on there that we don't
[16:06] Speaker 1: know if he is fully back or not. Let's go
[16:08] Speaker 1: to the Jaguars have had a lot of injuries. Parker
[16:11] Speaker 1: Washington has been out of practice this week is supposed
[16:15] Speaker 1: to return maybe next week, but that's their number one receiver.
[16:18] Speaker 1: Leaquint Allen, their third down back, is going to be
[16:22] Speaker 1: out for the rest of camp. A lot of these
[16:23] Speaker 1: running backs are just being put on hold until the
[16:25] Speaker 1: season start. One of their starting offensive lineman, Patrick McCarry
[16:29] Speaker 1: had back surgery that's going to keep him out for
[16:32] Speaker 1: a while. His backup Wyatt tell Him, has also been hurt.
[16:36] Speaker 1: Walker Little, who's one of their tackles, has been hurt.
[16:39] Speaker 1: Cole Van Lannon, who is their left tackle, has been
[16:42] Speaker 1: out for most of the camp. Like they are a
[16:45] Speaker 1: little bit of a mess, especially on the offensive line.
[16:47] Speaker 2: Sneaky.
[16:48] Speaker 1: One of the most banged up teams in the league,
[16:50] Speaker 1: which makes it more notable. I'm going to throw this
[16:53] Speaker 1: one at you. I don't know if you know this
[16:54] Speaker 1: is coming. They didn't even know Travis Hunter. They didn't
[16:57] Speaker 1: even use Travis Hunter on offense on Monday at all.
[17:01] Speaker 1: Our friend John Shipley noted FORRESI dot Com. So it
[17:03] Speaker 1: kind of starting to show their hand that it's really
[17:06] Speaker 1: going to be heavy defense and I think a sprinkling
[17:09] Speaker 1: of offense, especially considering Parker Washington wasn't even out there
[17:12] Speaker 1: and they didn't use Travis Hunter at all on offense.
[17:14] Speaker 4: Yeah, at least really in the season.
[17:16] Speaker 3: This is a team that is weirdly positioned in that
[17:18] Speaker 3: they have a collection of veterans that are not going
[17:21] Speaker 3: to get slotted into the starting lineup to try to
[17:23] Speaker 3: fill some of these needs.
[17:24] Speaker 4: But it's not it's not like a hot it lowers
[17:27] Speaker 4: the ceiling.
[17:27] Speaker 3: Like these are all guys whose names you recognized, and
[17:29] Speaker 3: they all washed out from somewhere else when they came
[17:31] Speaker 3: in with relatively high expectations and they're now just like
[17:34] Speaker 3: in the too deep and they're slut you know, as
[17:35] Speaker 3: we're Cleveland's the chum Minidoga's those types, right, and and
[17:38] Speaker 3: that's never encouraging. However, when it comes to Travis Hunter,
[17:41] Speaker 3: that doesn't surprise.
[17:41] Speaker 2: Me at all.
[17:41] Speaker 3: I don't really care if he plays that much offense
[17:44] Speaker 3: because that's not going to be his primary position going forward.
[17:47] Speaker 4: He's going to be a cornerback.
[17:48] Speaker 3: And that's totally fine with a group that they have,
[17:51] Speaker 3: you know, I know, Washington not you know participating right now, right,
[17:53] Speaker 3: but you still have Chaobe Myers, got Brian Thomas coming
[17:56] Speaker 3: off of you know, an up and down season last year.
[17:58] Speaker 4: It's fine.
[17:58] Speaker 3: You got when it comes to Travis Hunter, I'm over
[18:01] Speaker 3: the experiment. I know it attracts the eyeballs and everything,
[18:04] Speaker 3: but just slot him in where he's best and where
[18:06] Speaker 3: he's most valuable, and that's on defense.
[18:07] Speaker 1: Oh I think he's got a play offense, but it
[18:09] Speaker 1: could be like ten to fifteen snaps one week, it
[18:11] Speaker 1: could be five the next, it could be twenty five
[18:13] Speaker 1: to the next. But I love the idea of all
[18:16] Speaker 1: pro cornerback Travis Hunter.
[18:17] Speaker 2: That's what I'm hoping for.
[18:18] Speaker 1: But I'm telling you this, these offensive line injuries in Jacksonville,
[18:23] Speaker 1: I have not seen talked about a lot, and it's
[18:25] Speaker 1: been everywhere they I don't know how long term all
[18:28] Speaker 1: these are, but it could be a big problem for
[18:31] Speaker 1: them early in the season. I tease the old friends
[18:34] Speaker 1: returning to our lives this week to start the show,
[18:37] Speaker 1: Von Miller is a Dallas Cowboy. He's been begging to
[18:43] Speaker 1: join this team via social media basically all off season.
[18:47] Speaker 1: We're going to hit the Cowboys on Wednesday morning show.
[18:50] Speaker 1: It's the NFC East Preview with Patrick Claybon. So Miller
[18:54] Speaker 1: joins a deep, but maybe not like high.
[18:59] Speaker 2: Level pass rush group.
[19:00] Speaker 1: How would you describe the Cowboys passrest group.
[19:03] Speaker 2: Now that they add von Miller.
[19:05] Speaker 4: To the mix, it's better than it was last year.
[19:09] Speaker 3: Like they went and got Rashan Gary, You'll see what
[19:11] Speaker 3: you get a Dominezaraku. It's a mix of veteran talent
[19:16] Speaker 3: with household names that kind of need a bounce back
[19:20] Speaker 3: or for in von Miller's case, just another year in
[19:22] Speaker 3: the league. Although he had a pretty solid season in
[19:24] Speaker 3: Washington last year as part of the worst defense in
[19:26] Speaker 3: the NFL statistically, it's not one that strikes fear in
[19:29] Speaker 3: the heart of an opposing offense. But I think the
[19:32] Speaker 3: real strength is what they've done with their front, you know,
[19:35] Speaker 3: with Quentin Williams and Kenny Clark, and I think the
[19:39] Speaker 3: combined results will be better than the names on paper.
[19:42] Speaker 3: I just thought it was hilarious that after he campaigns
[19:45] Speaker 3: to join the Cowboys that the first person to talk
[19:47] Speaker 3: about it is DeMarcus Ware to ESPN, just raving about
[19:52] Speaker 3: how this is going to be so much more valuable
[19:54] Speaker 3: to the Cowboys than they realize. He's going to come
[19:56] Speaker 3: in there and teach those young guys what he knows,
[19:57] Speaker 3: just like I used to teach him back in Denver.
[20:00] Speaker 3: And obviously DeMarcus Ware has the Cowboys connection, and I'm
[20:02] Speaker 3: just like, you are really over overselling.
[20:05] Speaker 2: Oh how dare you?
[20:06] Speaker 1: I mean, he really is the DeMarcus where a timeline.
[20:11] Speaker 1: Granted it's it's von Miller now late in his career
[20:15] Speaker 1: DeMarcus Ware when he joined the Broncos, but you know
[20:17] Speaker 1: he's doing the reverse DeMarcus Ware, going for the Broncos
[20:21] Speaker 1: and then a bunch of other teams, but then landing
[20:23] Speaker 1: on the Cowboys. The Colts signed Keenan Allen and in
[20:25] Speaker 1: Miller's contract. By the way, Von Miller's contract is so
[20:28] Speaker 1: much it's over five and a half million dollar base
[20:30] Speaker 1: that he's going to play a lot for that team.
[20:32] Speaker 1: So makes you wonder a little bit about Malachi Lawrence,
[20:34] Speaker 1: their first round pick.
[20:36] Speaker 2: The Colts signed Keenan Allen. That's fun.
[20:38] Speaker 1: Former coach Shane Steichen is there, so I've been wondering
[20:44] Speaker 1: what they're gonna do at receiver. The Colts call up
[20:47] Speaker 1: Keenan Allen. It's up to eight point two million dollars,
[20:51] Speaker 1: but wouldn't surprise me if the base is closer to
[20:53] Speaker 1: three four five million dollars. But he's got a chance
[20:56] Speaker 1: to play a decent amount Keenan Allen can't can't get
[20:58] Speaker 1: rid of him shook.
[21:00] Speaker 3: We have discussed this Colt's receiver situation multiple times in
[21:03] Speaker 3: the past. We are concerned collectively about the fact that
[21:07] Speaker 3: they gave all that money to Alec Pierce and then
[21:09] Speaker 3: moved on from Michael Pittman, and it you know, the
[21:11] Speaker 3: idea of putting Josh downs outside when he should not
[21:14] Speaker 3: be outside as a receiver, because you're just looking for
[21:16] Speaker 3: different options and ways to use the guys that you
[21:17] Speaker 3: have on your roster, Ashton Dula and Nick Westbrook a
[21:20] Speaker 3: Kine being your next best options.
[21:22] Speaker 4: This made all the sense in the world.
[21:23] Speaker 3: But it's funny, Greg because in you know, now mid August,
[21:25] Speaker 3: it is very much Madden Season, and sometimes I like
[21:28] Speaker 3: to see what happens in my franchise and then does
[21:31] Speaker 3: it end up mirroring in real life. So I'm playing
[21:33] Speaker 3: against the Buccaneers the other day in Keenan Allen lands
[21:36] Speaker 3: on the Buccaneers. So I opened my email this morning
[21:38] Speaker 3: and I see, you know, somebody had sent something out
[21:40] Speaker 3: about Keenan Allen signing somewhere, but it was cut off
[21:41] Speaker 3: in the title, and I was like, ooh, did you
[21:43] Speaker 3: go to the buccaneer.
[21:43] Speaker 4: No, he went to the Colts, and I was like, Yes,
[21:45] Speaker 4: love that signing. Love that signing.
[21:46] Speaker 1: Reminds me a little bit of last year though, when
[21:49] Speaker 1: he and Lad McConkie were kind of duplicative, and I
[21:52] Speaker 1: do think yep Alan almost got in the way, and
[21:55] Speaker 1: he played well early in the season, but as some
[21:57] Speaker 1: veterans do, wore down a little little bit physically as
[22:00] Speaker 1: a season went on, because yeah, Josh Downs is going
[22:03] Speaker 1: to play the slot, but I think Keenan Allen's best
[22:06] Speaker 1: position at this point is certainly in the slot, and
[22:09] Speaker 1: so then are you really playing the guys at their
[22:12] Speaker 1: best spots.
[22:12] Speaker 2: We'll see.
[22:14] Speaker 1: Related to the Colts, their assistant general manager talked about
[22:18] Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson in a very positive way staying on the team,
[22:25] Speaker 1: essentially saying they're not going to give Anthony Richardson a way.
[22:28] Speaker 1: It's a win now type of year for the Colts,
[22:31] Speaker 1: and they needed three quarterbacks last year, and so you
[22:34] Speaker 1: never know they might need quarterbacks this year. I also
[22:37] Speaker 1: read this, and it goes with some reports that I've
[22:40] Speaker 1: seen that Riley Leonard hasn't exactly lit it up in
[22:43] Speaker 1: camp or the preseason, and so like what's the point
[22:46] Speaker 1: of trading Anthony Richardson. They need to win this year,
[22:49] Speaker 1: and Anthony Richardson probably would give them a better chance
[22:52] Speaker 1: to win than anyone else they could find. If Daniel
[22:54] Speaker 1: Jones was out for a couple games, you know, I
[22:57] Speaker 1: think Richardson is not going anywhere.
[23:00] Speaker 3: Daniel Jones being out a couple games usually happens in
[23:02] Speaker 3: faris Daniel Jones seasons, so it's good to have insurance.
[23:05] Speaker 3: I just think about the nightmare scenario for the Colts
[23:07] Speaker 3: this year is that, like they trade Richardson, he ends
[23:09] Speaker 3: up going somewhere and find success in the future. In
[23:11] Speaker 3: the meantime, they lose Daniel Jones. There down to Riley
[23:13] Speaker 3: Leonard and they're like, what did we do that for?
[23:15] Speaker 3: So it makes a lot of sense to hang on
[23:16] Speaker 3: to him.
[23:18] Speaker 2: I was high on Riley Leonard coming off last season.
[23:20] Speaker 2: Might still happen for him.
[23:21] Speaker 1: Maybe he's a gamer, looked pretty good when he actually
[23:23] Speaker 1: played in the regular season. A lot of negative injury news,
[23:27] Speaker 1: but this is the week where a lot of players
[23:29] Speaker 1: who had been on the shelf for much training camp return,
[23:31] Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna list them off for you. Great news.
[23:35] Speaker 1: Jalen Waddle back for the Broncos. Tristan Wurf's really practicing
[23:38] Speaker 1: for the first time for the Bucks since like the
[23:40] Speaker 1: first day of camp. DeVante Smith is back for the
[23:44] Speaker 1: Eagles in practicing. Josh Jacobs is expected to return for
[23:47] Speaker 1: the Packers. That's a big one. Quinjon Mitchell missed a
[23:50] Speaker 1: lot of practice. He's been back. Paulson Adebo is back
[23:53] Speaker 1: for the Giants, although they're playing it with the backups,
[23:55] Speaker 1: which is interesting to watch. Gino Smith's foot injury was
[23:58] Speaker 1: a short term thing. They just kept him out of
[24:00] Speaker 1: the preseason, but he's practicing. The Jets also had a
[24:02] Speaker 1: couple of their defensive players, Joseph Asai the edge rusher
[24:05] Speaker 1: and Tovandre Sweat, returned to practice. The exciting rookie running
[24:10] Speaker 1: back for the Seahawks, Jenerian Price was back at practice
[24:14] Speaker 1: full go after missing much of his work, and then
[24:18] Speaker 1: Kaylan Black was out there at.
[24:19] Speaker 2: The joint practice.
[24:21] Speaker 1: He is the rookie running back for the forty nine
[24:23] Speaker 1: ers who could get a lot of work if Christian
[24:26] Speaker 1: McCaffrey can't get back on the field. Now, hold on
[24:28] Speaker 1: one second, we're going to say goodbye with you, Shook,
[24:31] Speaker 1: but we have a special correspondent on this show. Yes,
[24:35] Speaker 1: we've got boots on the ground all over the country.
[24:39] Speaker 1: Jordan rod Rieg was at the Texans Raiders joint practice
[24:45] Speaker 1: and we asked her to file a report. I can't
[24:50] Speaker 1: wait to hear what is happening in Houston.
[24:53] Speaker 5: On the offense. I wanted to talk about what I
[24:55] Speaker 5: saw in joint practices from CJ. Stroud and specifically in
[24:59] Speaker 5: up and down down for both teams quarterbacks. I want
[25:02] Speaker 5: to say, a couple picks at the end in sort
[25:04] Speaker 5: of garbage time by Stroud and then Mendoza was picked
[25:07] Speaker 5: off through a pick six for the Raiders, and then
[25:10] Speaker 5: Kirk Cousins tough a pick as well. But you're gonna
[25:13] Speaker 5: have those in joint practices. So that wasn't really what
[25:15] Speaker 5: I was focusing on as much as looking at what
[25:18] Speaker 5: this run game looked like, because I saw them walk
[25:20] Speaker 5: through it and install what they wanted to do in
[25:22] Speaker 5: the practice today and it looked the part. Demo. David
[25:26] Speaker 5: Montgomery on this team is a really, really great bonus
[25:30] Speaker 5: for this team in terms of he's got this presence
[25:33] Speaker 5: and a veteran experience that he knows what he wants
[25:36] Speaker 5: from his blocking. That really really helps when you're talking
[25:40] Speaker 5: about an offensive line that's still in the mix and
[25:42] Speaker 5: still getting to know each other. Kilan Rutledge is going
[25:46] Speaker 5: to be a dude. I mean gonna be a freaking dude.
[25:49] Speaker 5: I mean that guy is just getting into it and scrapping.
[25:53] Speaker 5: Demo told me that he's leading the entire group too.
[25:56] Speaker 5: This is a rookie, by the way. It's playing guard
[25:58] Speaker 5: right now. Could play center at some point will but
[26:01] Speaker 5: right now they like him at guard, and then Fernando Mendoza.
[26:06] Speaker 5: You know, Kirk Cousins. I still I do have some
[26:08] Speaker 5: worries about his mobility in terms of I'm not really
[26:10] Speaker 5: sure yet. I didn't see a ton of it today.
[26:12] Speaker 5: I'm still not sure. And we'll see about whether he's
[26:16] Speaker 5: going to get be able to do those longer bootlegs
[26:18] Speaker 5: and some of that like deeper drop stuff that like
[26:21] Speaker 5: Clint Kubiak and this system in general wants to do.
[26:24] Speaker 5: He had a tough time just timing wise against the
[26:28] Speaker 5: Texans defensive line. I think anybody would, and it just
[26:33] Speaker 5: was rough. Not no real push in the run game
[26:35] Speaker 5: for the Raiders, However, I think they're gonna get Ashton
[26:39] Speaker 5: Chancey going so much more in the passing game, which
[26:41] Speaker 5: is really exciting, so much more in the screen game,
[26:43] Speaker 5: which we've talked about on the show, which is exciting.
[26:46] Speaker 4: And also.
[26:48] Speaker 5: The rookie running back Mike Washington Junior like genuinely has
[26:53] Speaker 5: some stuff to him, especially as an outside zone runner.
[26:55] Speaker 5: He really churns through those first players pretty well. And
[26:59] Speaker 5: you know, he was a bright spot for them today
[27:01] Speaker 5: even though they couldn't really get a ton of run
[27:03] Speaker 5: game going. On the Raiders side, random Mendoza a lot
[27:06] Speaker 5: of work under center, as we expected, even when it
[27:10] Speaker 5: was tough sledding for him, he looked confident. He had
[27:12] Speaker 5: the best, probably the best play on offense for the
[27:14] Speaker 5: Raiders today, which was a mid range throw to the
[27:18] Speaker 5: sideline opposite sideline to brock Bowers. Really cool little scheme
[27:22] Speaker 5: on the play too. Brock Bowers capitalized really, I mean,
[27:26] Speaker 5: he just looks as form. And then on the other side,
[27:30] Speaker 5: I just also wanted to reiterate the Texans run game
[27:33] Speaker 5: look good. They got to keep going and they all
[27:36] Speaker 5: told me, you know, this a work in progress and
[27:38] Speaker 5: this is still as they say in football, stacking blocks
[27:41] Speaker 5: and just good reps, good reps, good reps. But they
[27:43] Speaker 5: really needed a day like this where they could see
[27:45] Speaker 5: all the ideas and the design and the mental stuff
[27:50] Speaker 5: and the physicality that they've been trying to build in
[27:52] Speaker 5: practice without being able to really hit people come to
[27:57] Speaker 5: Fruition today. So I think they all came away feeling really,
[28:00] Speaker 5: really positive about this day. Now, I'm just trolling you
[28:03] Speaker 5: because you said said something short and this is almost
[28:05] Speaker 5: six minutes long.
[28:07] Speaker 1: All right, you know, she said she trolled me with
[28:10] Speaker 1: six minutes of content. We trolled her right back by
[28:12] Speaker 1: like cutting off the first two and a half minutes
[28:14] Speaker 1: where oh, it was just kind of creative control.
[28:16] Speaker 4: It's just kind of still in the studio.
[28:18] Speaker 1: Clearing her throat and just setting it up. And that
[28:21] Speaker 1: was great stuff. I really love hearing this stuff. And
[28:24] Speaker 1: she was excited. You could tell listening to it about
[28:27] Speaker 1: Mike Washington an interesting player to watch for the Raiders.
[28:30] Speaker 1: I'm kind of excited about Mike Washington too. I'm excited
[28:33] Speaker 1: about this Texans offense. But you know who else loved
[28:36] Speaker 1: Mike Washington our Draftnick Consiglieri, Spice, Rack Brad Spicer.
[28:42] Speaker 2: Longtime listeners will know him.
[28:44] Speaker 1: So I am hashtag noticing this situation with the Raiders
[28:47] Speaker 1: I can't wait to watch them.
[28:49] Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope that everything works out up front for them,
[28:52] Speaker 3: and I hope that they can get the most I mean,
[28:53] Speaker 3: I hope brock Bower stays healthy because if he doesn't,
[28:55] Speaker 3: they'll have a more balanced offense.
[28:56] Speaker 4: They're gonna need it.
[28:57] Speaker 3: But love watching Mike Mike Washington gallop through the Defense
[29:01] Speaker 3: Net preseason opener.
[29:02] Speaker 4: I want to see more of them.
[29:03] Speaker 1: Some levels to this Raiders offense this season. Levels to
[29:08] Speaker 1: the NFL Daily Crew, Like what a week we're having
[29:11] Speaker 1: here with Claybon and Shook. Shook will be back with
[29:14] Speaker 1: me on Sunday night. Let's get out of here. That's
