[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we hope no one ever
[0:07] Speaker 1: calls us inoperable. I'm Greg Rosenthal here in the Chris
[0:10] Speaker 1: Wesleyan podcast studio with my friend Nick Shook. Inoperable, Shooky,
[0:17] Speaker 1: was the word to describe the commander's joint practice against
[0:24] Speaker 1: the Ravens, specifically the offense and the offensive line. Never
[0:29] Speaker 1: great when you inspire, and this is from their beat writer, Nicky,
[0:34] Speaker 1: a Bala of the Washington post or the athletic rather.
[0:38] Speaker 2: This is the worst I've ever seen.
[0:39] Speaker 1: The commander's offense in years, inoperable offensive line. Oh, that's
[0:44] Speaker 1: just like, I don't want to hear that two weeks
[0:46] Speaker 1: before the season starts.
[0:48] Speaker 3: I mean, what's the most important part in football. It
[0:50] Speaker 3: starts in the trenches. You can't protect your quarterback.
[0:52] Speaker 4: You got problems. Can't get the ball out on time.
[0:54] Speaker 3: And yeah, it sounds like it was pretty much a
[0:56] Speaker 3: nightmare against the Ravens in a joint practice. Not ideal,
[0:59] Speaker 3: not ideal as a, we're a couple of weeks away
[1:01] Speaker 3: from the start of the regular season.
[1:02] Speaker 1: For some context, no Sam Cosme, who is probably their
[1:06] Speaker 1: best offensive lineman for this particular practice. But it supports
[1:13] Speaker 1: something we saw in their brief appearance in the preseason
[1:16] Speaker 1: where you're like, oh, two pressures and two dropbacks.
[1:18] Speaker 2: He got sacked. Let's not panic. And then this happens.
[1:21] Speaker 1: And I bring all that up to kind of give
[1:24] Speaker 1: context to what today's show is going to be all about.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Me and you. A little over a month ago. I
[1:30] Speaker 2: think it was June 20th.
[1:33] Speaker 1: Or July 20th or so, we went over the top
[1:37] Speaker 1: position battles in all of training camp that we would
[1:41] Speaker 1: be watching. This is about a week before training camp
[1:44] Speaker 1: even started. And I thought it would be interesting to
[1:47] Speaker 1: go back and revisit, not the entire list, not, you know,
[1:51] Speaker 1: we've talked about a lot of the battles and some
[1:54] Speaker 1: just aren't that interesting, but the 12 most interesting position
[1:58] Speaker 1: battle updates. And that got me thinking of just what
[2:01] Speaker 1: have we learned in general in this entire preseason training
[2:05] Speaker 1: camp process? Maybe you're not even listening to every single
[2:09] Speaker 1: NFL daily, although we're not going to be repeating ourselves.
[2:11] Speaker 1: So what we're going to do on this show is
[2:12] Speaker 1: kind of get everyone up to date, update the position battles.
[2:15] Speaker 1: We're going to talk about some rookie risers and rookie fallers,
[2:19] Speaker 1: the guys who really stood out. And then Get everyone
[2:22] Speaker 1: up to date about injury situations, like what we feel
[2:24] Speaker 1: good about, what we don't, what we're really not sure
[2:28] Speaker 1: after this five weeks of data. Because at this point,
[2:31] Speaker 1: the local access, watching practice, it's over. The preseason, we
[2:37] Speaker 1: got a few games left to go. They're not going
[2:39] Speaker 1: to be that meaningful. We'll have cut down day on Sunday,
[2:42] Speaker 1: but it's the last time we're going to have Shook
[2:44] Speaker 1: on for a minute. He's going to be doing some
[2:46] Speaker 1: important life stuff that we're excited about him. We'll update
[2:50] Speaker 1: the listeners at some point in the future. But let's
[2:53] Speaker 1: go to these position battle updates. Let's start with the
[2:56] Speaker 1: Atlanta Falcons. Michael Penix and Tuatunga-Vailoa was right near the
[3:01] Speaker 1: top of the list of the ones I wanted to
[3:03] Speaker 1: watch coming into camp.
[3:05] Speaker 2: And it has taken a turn this week, Nick.
[3:07] Speaker 1: Let's actually listen to our friend Ian Rapoport update the
[3:12] Speaker 1: situation on the Insiders on NFL Network.
[3:16] Speaker 2: On Tuesday night, the.
[3:17] Speaker 5: Goal of the entire organization was to have to be
[3:20] Speaker 5: the starting quarterback right away to start the season. Let
[3:23] Speaker 5: Michael Penix come along. So remember, it's still a nine
[3:26] Speaker 5: months or so from the ACL tear. Really, you'd like
[3:28] Speaker 5: him to be inactive for the first several games and
[3:31] Speaker 5: really just take his time and make sure he's fully
[3:33] Speaker 5: healthy to his play. Made that impossible, not just in
[3:36] Speaker 5: the preseason game, which we've seen. It sounds like practice
[3:39] Speaker 5: as well. All of which is to say, this is
[3:42] Speaker 5: Michael Penick's job for the taking. If he comes out
[3:46] Speaker 5: and plays as well as he can, it actually could
[3:49] Speaker 5: create the best case scenario.
[3:51] Speaker 2: For the Atlanta Falcons.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Oh boy. When you have Rappaport, usually reporting with kid gloves,
[3:58] Speaker 1: he's got a lot of sources. He's not trying to
[4:00] Speaker 1: necessarily offend that. Tuatunga-Vailoa has given the Falcons no choice
[4:08] Speaker 1: but to change their initial plan. Those are really strong words.
[4:13] Speaker 1: Let's listen to how Kevin Stefanski positioned this week's practices.
[4:18] Speaker 1: So they're splitting first team reps immediately. Michael Penix making
[4:21] Speaker 1: his first practices with the team in 11-on-11s. And then
[4:25] Speaker 1: they have a preseason game later this week.
[4:28] Speaker 6: This was an important week for Mike. First time out
[4:30] Speaker 6: there with people around you. The offensive line, the defensive line.
[4:33] Speaker 6: And I think... going through a drill where you got
[4:36] Speaker 6: to move up in the pocket or get chased out
[4:38] Speaker 6: of the pocket, whatever it is. So I thought a
[4:40] Speaker 6: really good first step for Mike in that regard. But
[4:43] Speaker 6: outside of this week, I don't think it's fair to
[4:45] Speaker 6: go farther than that.
[4:46] Speaker 1: So they're going to play Tua in the preseason game
[4:50] Speaker 1: with other starters. Maybe they'll rest a few guys. They're
[4:53] Speaker 1: going to rest Penix in the preseason game, but they're
[4:56] Speaker 1: splitting reps at practice. Throw all that together with Ian's report.
[5:00] Speaker 1: And where do you think this one is going?
[5:02] Speaker 2: What do you think?
[5:04] Speaker 3: The Falcons have realized that, oh my God, we better
[5:07] Speaker 3: hope that Michael Penix is ready to play in week
[5:09] Speaker 3: one because we know we don't have a great chance
[5:11] Speaker 3: of Tua Tungabailoa.
[5:12] Speaker 4: And for those who.
[5:13] Speaker 3: You know, I'm not here to pile on Tua, but
[5:15] Speaker 3: he hasn't looked good. There was, of course, that clip
[5:18] Speaker 3: with the joint practice with the Colts where he looked
[5:20] Speaker 3: like he was completely frazzled in the pocket, had no
[5:22] Speaker 3: idea where to go, and like he hadn't played pro
[5:24] Speaker 3: football before.
[5:25] Speaker 4: And that doesn't look good either. But I think it's
[5:27] Speaker 4: just a sign that he hasn't made the progress.
[5:29] Speaker 3: You know, he started camp injured like Penix, but it
[5:32] Speaker 3: was kind of a surprise back issue that limited his
[5:35] Speaker 3: ability to get going.
[5:36] Speaker 4: And he hasn't really gotten any better.
[5:38] Speaker 3: And it sounds to me like they're ready to shift
[5:41] Speaker 3: toward Penix because they're desperate to. Now, Stefanski continued to
[5:44] Speaker 3: talk on this today and said that he wasn't willing
[5:46] Speaker 3: to name a starter as of now and that he
[5:48] Speaker 3: wasn't trying to intentionally play coy or anything. He just
[5:51] Speaker 3: needed to give the time, the process as much time
[5:53] Speaker 3: as possible, a.k.a. we need to give Michael Penix as
[5:56] Speaker 3: much time as possible to prove to us that he
[5:58] Speaker 3: can play in week one. Penix said that he would
[6:01] Speaker 3: be ready mentally and physically for week one if he
[6:03] Speaker 3: was named the starter. As of now, he does not
[6:06] Speaker 3: feel like it's quite the right time for him to
[6:08] Speaker 3: take the field, which is why he won't be playing
[6:10] Speaker 3: in this preseason game. And, you know, there's a bit
[6:12] Speaker 3: of a clash of logic here because you think, all right,
[6:16] Speaker 3: week three, do you really want to play your starters?
[6:18] Speaker 5: Right.
[6:18] Speaker 3: Most teams might not want to. The Falcons are going
[6:21] Speaker 3: to want to because they still are that far away
[6:23] Speaker 3: from finding rhythm offensively.
[6:25] Speaker 4: And it all starts at quarterback. So the idea that.
[6:28] Speaker 3: Penix isn't playing a signal that he's going to be
[6:29] Speaker 3: the week one starter, not quite the same because he's
[6:31] Speaker 3: just now getting back to 11 on 11. But the
[6:33] Speaker 3: fact that Tua is playing, It means that they need
[6:35] Speaker 3: to see something from him, at least as a backup plan.
[6:38] Speaker 3: So the situation is not really ideal right now for
[6:41] Speaker 3: the Falcons.
[6:41] Speaker 1: No, I tried to focus in on this show at
[6:44] Speaker 1: stuff that we can be sure about our real top
[6:47] Speaker 1: line stories. And Ian indicating that he's left them no
[6:51] Speaker 1: choice because of the practices supports the vibes I've been
[6:55] Speaker 1: getting out of there at practice as well. They open
[6:59] Speaker 1: at Pittsburgh. I've said all along, I think the Falcons,
[7:03] Speaker 1: there's a chance here. They're one of the worst couple
[7:05] Speaker 1: teams in the NFL. I do not like this roster. Uh,
[7:08] Speaker 1: then they host the Panthers. They're at the Packers. Like
[7:11] Speaker 1: it might be a good time to get them early
[7:13] Speaker 1: in the season. We got the Falcons in primetime schedule
[7:16] Speaker 1: makers back to back weeks, weeks three and four.
[7:19] Speaker 2: Weird. Early. Not sure who we're going to see there.
[7:23] Speaker 4: Get them off the runway.
[7:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, but you don't have to put them on the
[7:25] Speaker 2: runway at all. Treat them like the Browns.
[7:28] Speaker 6: Sorry.
[7:28] Speaker 1: I know they got Bajon and Drake London, but man,
[7:32] Speaker 1: the second position battle wanted to hit was scam. Cam
[7:35] Speaker 1: Scataboo versus the, everyone that was in that Giants backfield.
[7:39] Speaker 1: And I wanted to bring this up first because it's
[7:43] Speaker 1: clear that Cam Scadaboo has distanced himself from Tyrone Tracy
[7:46] Speaker 1: and Devin Singletary. He's listed as first. on the depth
[7:50] Speaker 1: chart now for the Giants. But when they list it
[7:54] Speaker 1: on the second team, it's Tracy or Singletary or Najee Harris.
[7:59] Speaker 1: And Najee Harris was taking first team reps already at
[8:04] Speaker 1: practice on Monday and Tuesday. That is fascinating to me
[8:09] Speaker 1: and makes me think, man, Najee Harris is going to
[8:13] Speaker 1: be a factor that we never saw coming in this
[8:15] Speaker 1: Giants backfield.
[8:17] Speaker 3: And it all goes back to the background of the
[8:19] Speaker 3: Harbaugh's and where they've been last year. Najee was with
[8:22] Speaker 3: Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers until he missed the rest
[8:24] Speaker 3: of the season. Prior to that, Najee was a Steeler
[8:27] Speaker 3: playing the same division as John Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens. So
[8:30] Speaker 3: they're very familiar with him. He was a late arrival
[8:33] Speaker 3: to practice during this camp. and has seemingly worked his
[8:37] Speaker 3: way up to speed quickly enough for them to think,
[8:39] Speaker 3: all right, you're an ideal number two. I also think
[8:41] Speaker 3: it speaks to the fact that Tyrone Tracy has had
[8:43] Speaker 3: a terrible preseason, which is really unfortunate because I kind
[8:46] Speaker 3: of liked him last year. And Devin Singletary, just who
[8:49] Speaker 3: is who he is at this point. They're looking for
[8:51] Speaker 3: another guy behind Scadaboo who can make a difference. So
[8:54] Speaker 3: they turned back to a guy who came to the
[8:56] Speaker 3: NFL with a lot of tread borne off those tires
[8:58] Speaker 3: from his time at Alabama, but still a hard runner
[9:00] Speaker 3: that really matches the persona that they really want to,
[9:03] Speaker 3: you know, adopt as an offense. Scataboo being a hard runner,
[9:06] Speaker 3: Najee being a hard runner, that becomes your identity in
[9:09] Speaker 3: the backfield.
[9:09] Speaker 4: So it makes a lot of sense, even if it
[9:11] Speaker 4: is a bit of a surprise.
[9:12] Speaker 1: Scataboo is not built to have 400 touches. I just
[9:17] Speaker 1: don't think the way that he runs, they trust that.
[9:20] Speaker 1: I think it's going to be way closer to a 1A,
[9:23] Speaker 1: 1B situation. I'm not sure about Najee Harris coming off
[9:26] Speaker 1: such a serious injury, but if he's good enough, he
[9:30] Speaker 1: could be the 1A potentially, or that'll be very even.
[9:33] Speaker 1: At wide receiver, I had called it a morass coming
[9:36] Speaker 1: into the season, the Giants wide receiver situation. We have
[9:40] Speaker 1: takeaways here about who won, who lost, who got injured.
[9:44] Speaker 1: Malachi Fields, the rookie, I think is wide receiver too here.
[9:47] Speaker 1: I mean, other guys are going to play. They were
[9:50] Speaker 1: taking calls, according to the local beat reporters, on Darius
[9:53] Speaker 1: Slayton and Darnell Mooney last week. I don't know if
[9:57] Speaker 1: they're going to continue to after Calvin Austin. tore his ACL.
[10:01] Speaker 1: That's happened since we last taped that we had that confirmed.
[10:05] Speaker 1: He was going to be the slot. I think Malachi
[10:07] Speaker 1: Fields was going to be the two. And then Malik Neighbors,
[10:10] Speaker 1: which is a big part of this, is slowly ramping up.
[10:14] Speaker 1: The expectation is he's going to be ready for week one,
[10:17] Speaker 1: and yet we haven't really seen him in full team drills,
[10:20] Speaker 1: so there's questions there. I still think they could get
[10:22] Speaker 1: rid of either Slayton or Mooney. I think the Austin
[10:26] Speaker 1: injury means they'll definitely keep one of them, but I
[10:28] Speaker 1: think we have a pretty clear order, and this is
[10:30] Speaker 1: what camp is all about.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Fields is two.
[10:33] Speaker 1: You assume neighbors is healthy enough to be one. And
[10:36] Speaker 1: then one of the two I just mentioned is three.
[10:38] Speaker 1: And maybe Odell Beckham makes the team now. You know,
[10:41] Speaker 1: they want to keep them on the team. You know,
[10:43] Speaker 1: they want to keep them on the team.
[10:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, they've been rightfully high on fields. And I think
[10:47] Speaker 3: that this has always been kind of the aspirational plan
[10:49] Speaker 3: for him. And he's fulfilled the expectations that they set
[10:53] Speaker 3: for him to become, you know, wide receiver to the
[10:55] Speaker 3: idea that neighbors, you got to get neighbors, you know,
[10:57] Speaker 3: at full strength, which is closer to that than he
[11:00] Speaker 3: was even a couple.
[11:00] Speaker 4: Of weeks ago. But yeah, you're right.
[11:02] Speaker 3: The rest of it is just like, how do we
[11:03] Speaker 3: figure this out because of the Calvin Austin's injury? And
[11:06] Speaker 3: I think between Slayton and Mooney, I think Slayton's the
[11:09] Speaker 3: one to go. Slayton has essentially been getting preseason auditions
[11:12] Speaker 3: by playing much deeper into games than you would expect
[11:14] Speaker 3: for somebody who's, you know, got that.
[11:15] Speaker 2: Mooney did too.
[11:16] Speaker 1: They had him out there in the second half last week.
[11:18] Speaker 1: And then I was like, oh, okay.
[11:21] Speaker 4: I have a feeling that it's going to be Slayton
[11:23] Speaker 4: who ends up on the move. It would be hilarious.
[11:25] Speaker 2: Not, I guess.
[11:26] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[11:26] Speaker 3: Kind of hilarious that Odell would make the team given
[11:29] Speaker 3: that he, you know, had that drop in the back
[11:31] Speaker 3: of the end zone, very frustrated by it, but you're right.
[11:33] Speaker 3: But it's the, it's the romantic element of it. You know,
[11:36] Speaker 3: if you've got space for him on the roster.
[11:37] Speaker 2: Why not?
[11:38] Speaker 1: Austin's injury, I think locks in Braxton barriers for people
[11:42] Speaker 1: that are interested in that sort of thing, but that's
[11:43] Speaker 1: more because of his return ability and he'll play some
[11:46] Speaker 1: slot as well. And yes, we lost Juju Smith-Schuster to
[11:49] Speaker 1: this battle along the way. A couple other quick battles
[11:53] Speaker 1: I'll hit at wide receiver for the Dolphins. That was
[11:56] Speaker 1: another morass. We found out it's going to be the
[11:59] Speaker 1: rookie Caleb Douglas, a third round pick. It's going to
[12:02] Speaker 1: be Malik Washington. I think those are your top two guys.
[12:04] Speaker 1: Jalen Tolbert seems to be number three there. I thought
[12:07] Speaker 1: Caleb Lomu versus Will Campbell was going to be a thing.
[12:10] Speaker 1: Very much not a thing. Will Campbell, great camp. Lomu,
[12:14] Speaker 1: their first round pick at left tackle. Not a good camp.
[12:16] Speaker 1: I thought the Cowboys left tackle position was going to
[12:19] Speaker 1: be up for grabs. No, it's Tyler Guyton's job for sure.
[12:23] Speaker 1: I was looking at the Ravens number three receiver situation,
[12:26] Speaker 1: Elijah Surratt, Jacoby Lane, Tez Walker.
[12:30] Speaker 2: It's Jacoby Lane. One of the stories of camp. Love that.
[12:33] Speaker 2: You got, you are, you are literally.
[12:35] Speaker 1: Lifting your arms. I was going to say flexing, but
[12:37] Speaker 1: that's just naturally how they look.
[12:39] Speaker 3: This is, this is my natural state of rejoicing because
[12:42] Speaker 3: my guy is, Jacoby Lane went to camp and seize
[12:45] Speaker 3: the opportunity, baby.
[12:46] Speaker 4: Let's go.
[12:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been great.
[12:48] Speaker 1: And it does make me feel better about that offense
[12:50] Speaker 1: because they need some depth. They don't really have it
[12:52] Speaker 1: at tight end or receiver. They're hoping for a lot
[12:54] Speaker 1: out of Rashad Bateman. Let's finish with Cousins and Mendoza,
[13:01] Speaker 1: at least like the preseason talk about them. Although we
[13:03] Speaker 1: might see Mendoza in the preseason finale.
[13:06] Speaker 2: We'll find out. I found this battle fascinating. Fascinating.
[13:10] Speaker 1: Cousins is getting the first team reps in practice this week.
[13:14] Speaker 1: I'd be shocked at this point if he's not the
[13:16] Speaker 1: week one starter. Is that too strong of a word?
[13:19] Speaker 2: Shocked? Like what percentage do you put it at now?
[13:22] Speaker 4: No, I'd be shocked too. I was surprised.
[13:25] Speaker 3: I shouldn't have been, but I was surprised that you
[13:27] Speaker 3: were being the straw that stirs the drink for most
[13:29] Speaker 3: of the preseason trying to push the whole Mendoza agenda
[13:31] Speaker 3: knowing that Clint Kubiak wants a veteran quarterback to start
[13:34] Speaker 3: the season with them.
[13:35] Speaker 1: I think Clint Kubiak's backed me up by not committing
[13:38] Speaker 1: to Cousins and then.
[13:40] Speaker 2: The preseason numbers have not looked good.
[13:44] Speaker 1: I swear, and it was great to see Stephen Ruiz,
[13:48] Speaker 1: one of the writers I respect the most who cover quarterbacks.
[13:51] Speaker 1: He's moved to Fox Sports now. You know, he was
[13:53] Speaker 1: so high on Mendoza's preseason in terms of the processing, decision-making,
[13:57] Speaker 1: that he just looks like an adult back there. And
[13:59] Speaker 1: that's the most important thing.
[14:01] Speaker 5: And.
[14:02] Speaker 1: I do still wonder if Kubiak's like, man, if he
[14:05] Speaker 1: just keeps showing this progress, they're still, you know, not
[14:08] Speaker 1: committing that, like, maybe we should just do it sooner
[14:12] Speaker 1: than later. So to me, I think it's like 80-20
[14:15] Speaker 1: Cousins is the week one starter and that it's... It's
[14:20] Speaker 1: 40-60 that Cousins is the week four starter.
[14:23] Speaker 4: I'm just throwing things out.
[14:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll ride with that because for a rookie head coach,
[14:27] Speaker 3: this is very unusual, but he's in the bit of
[14:29] Speaker 3: a catbird seat with the quarterback situation because Mendoza has
[14:32] Speaker 3: looked so good in the preseason despite what the numbers say.
[14:35] Speaker 4: Steven Ruiz is absolutely right.
[14:37] Speaker 3: Mendoza looks like a guy who is extremely prepared, which
[14:39] Speaker 3: is exactly what Kubiak said about him. And you're in
[14:42] Speaker 3: a luxurious situation in which you can choose between two
[14:44] Speaker 3: guys that you actually have some confidence in that can
[14:46] Speaker 3: handle the operation of the offense. So, It makes a
[14:49] Speaker 3: lot of sense for the long-term planning of this franchise
[14:51] Speaker 3: to start the season with Kirk cousins.
[14:53] Speaker 4: And if he's just average, it's fine.
[14:55] Speaker 3: And eventually you try to work in Mendoza because you
[14:58] Speaker 3: know that he's going to be prepared for it. And
[15:00] Speaker 3: you got to see what you can get. The dangerous
[15:02] Speaker 3: part of that though, Greg is what if Kirk is
[15:05] Speaker 3: all right. He's he's kind of what he was in
[15:07] Speaker 3: Atlanta last year. You're competitive. Maybe you aren't winning a
[15:11] Speaker 3: lot of games, but you're competitive. Mendoza comes in and
[15:13] Speaker 3: then struggles more than you expect. And you take a
[15:15] Speaker 3: step back because then you've already kind of taken the
[15:18] Speaker 3: genie out of the bottle. You can't go back at
[15:19] Speaker 3: that point.
[15:21] Speaker 2: To quote the great Mike Tomlin. We do not live
[15:24] Speaker 2: in our fears.
[15:24] Speaker 4: Not live in our fears.
[15:27] Speaker 1: You gotta just go. Does make me wonder a little too,
[15:30] Speaker 1: like has Kirk been a little underwhelming?
[15:32] Speaker 2: Who knows?
[15:32] Speaker 1: There's no way to know. You'd have to be at
[15:35] Speaker 1: the practice, be inside of Clint Kubiak's mind. A couple
[15:38] Speaker 1: other position battles I had written down. a month ago
[15:42] Speaker 1: that have declarative winners in the Patriots receiver medley. And
[15:46] Speaker 1: I'm not including Romeo Dobbs and AJ Brown in that.
[15:49] Speaker 1: Keishon Moody got traded and DeMario Douglas won in terms
[15:53] Speaker 1: of the guy who is going to be on the
[15:54] Speaker 1: field most snaps. Matt Collins seems kind of locked in.
[15:58] Speaker 1: as that number four guy. And then my guy, Kyle Williams,
[16:02] Speaker 1: will stay on the roster for sure after they traded
[16:04] Speaker 1: Keishon Booty. We also learned just in terms of usage
[16:08] Speaker 1: that it's going to be a cornerback year for Travis Hunter.
[16:10] Speaker 1: That was one of the questions I had. And I
[16:13] Speaker 1: think it's going to be an even more extreme cornerback,
[16:15] Speaker 1: not wide receiver year than I expected going into camp.
[16:19] Speaker 1: Let's flip to another section we're going to do. called
[16:22] Speaker 1: some rookie risers and fallers. And these guys could also
[16:26] Speaker 1: be counted as position battle winners. A month and a
[16:30] Speaker 1: half ago, I was... naive enough to include Ricky Pearsall
[16:35] Speaker 1: in a wide receiver mix. The wide receiver competition for
[16:39] Speaker 1: San Francisco was Dijon Stribling versus Christian Kirk versus Demarcus
[16:43] Speaker 1: Robinson versus Ricky Pearsall's health. And we can say that
[16:48] Speaker 1: Dijon Stribling is the winner. One of the biggest rookie
[16:52] Speaker 1: risers in the entire NFL.
[16:55] Speaker 3: He's been strong, but it's also, you can't hold this
[16:57] Speaker 3: against yourself. You couldn't predict that, that Ricky Pearsall's knee
[17:00] Speaker 3: that he should have had an operation on then swelled
[17:02] Speaker 3: up and got to the point that he needed the operation.
[17:04] Speaker 4: Like you're not in the, in the team doctor's heads there.
[17:07] Speaker 3: So that's not on you, but look, these are the
[17:09] Speaker 3: developments that you hope for when you draft the guy
[17:11] Speaker 3: and you throw them in there and they end up
[17:12] Speaker 3: exceeding expectations.
[17:13] Speaker 4: It's a good situation for the 49ers.
[17:15] Speaker 3: To have not a perfect situation though, because they just
[17:18] Speaker 3: can't stay healthy. Hopefully Stribling ends up, you know, kind
[17:21] Speaker 3: of matching what he's produced so far in camp in
[17:24] Speaker 3: the preseason and ends up being a key part of
[17:25] Speaker 3: this team because I think they're going to need him.
[17:27] Speaker 2: Oh, I think he is. I think he's going to
[17:29] Speaker 2: have a lot of volume. I get it.
[17:33] Speaker 1: I just don't think there's other people that are going
[17:35] Speaker 1: to be catching enough passes on this team. Kittle will
[17:38] Speaker 1: obviously be a volume target once he is out there,
[17:42] Speaker 1: but his situation is a little bit of a question.
[17:44] Speaker 1: Mike Evans is expected to return to practice next week,
[17:48] Speaker 1: but his injuries have been a little more serious than
[17:51] Speaker 1: they've let on because he just hasn't been out there.
[17:53] Speaker 1: I also list your two rookies in Cleveland as Casey
[17:57] Speaker 1: Concepcion and Denzel Boston among the biggest rookie winners. Just
[18:02] Speaker 1: an awesome month for the two of them. And people
[18:06] Speaker 1: might say, well, okay, they got to do it in
[18:07] Speaker 1: the game. This doesn't mean everything. I'm reading all the
[18:10] Speaker 1: reports in all the camps. It's not like this for everyone.
[18:15] Speaker 1: Zach Jackson, who's covered this team forever, is like, these
[18:18] Speaker 1: are the best two receivers they've had in the building
[18:20] Speaker 1: for so long. They're just the best two receivers.
[18:22] Speaker 2: On the team.
[18:23] Speaker 1: And that includes a guy in Jerry Judy who's making
[18:25] Speaker 1: a lot of money. And they're just clearly better than
[18:27] Speaker 1: him already, which is great news for the future of
[18:30] Speaker 1: your Browns, if not the present.
[18:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, the big question will be who's throwing them the football.
[18:34] Speaker 3: We already know that drama and everything else. But this
[18:35] Speaker 3: is about the long term. This is about building your
[18:37] Speaker 3: core and answering a need that you've had for forever.
[18:40] Speaker 3: And if you could get them to be You don't
[18:44] Speaker 3: have to produce at the level that Josh Gordon did,
[18:45] Speaker 3: but just fill a role that Josh Gordon once occupied
[18:48] Speaker 3: in this receiving quarter. There'll be fan favorites, there'll be productive,
[18:51] Speaker 3: and there'll be an ideal situation for whatever quarterback comes
[18:53] Speaker 3: to town next year because one will be coming to
[18:56] Speaker 3: walk into.
[18:57] Speaker 1: Caleb Downs, I wrote down just as another rookie who's
[19:00] Speaker 1: gotten a lot of positive press, Jadarian Price. I am
[19:04] Speaker 1: absolutely swayed by some of those hard knocks clips and
[19:08] Speaker 1: the fact that the Seahawks coaches, the way they've talked
[19:11] Speaker 1: about them, they're like, we don't need to see him
[19:12] Speaker 1: in the preseason. I think they're a little wowed by
[19:17] Speaker 1: Jadarian Price's talent and no one else has really emerged there.
[19:23] Speaker 1: And so he's just got to stay healthy. But to me,
[19:25] Speaker 1: he's a riser despite missing some of camp with injuries.
[19:28] Speaker 2: Is that is that the problem you got for me?
[19:31] Speaker 4: No, it's not a problem. I'm just I'm.
[19:33] Speaker 3: It feels kind of like a bit of a kid
[19:35] Speaker 3: gloves thing too, where they're like, look, we've already gotten
[19:37] Speaker 3: bitten hard by the injury bug at this position. We
[19:39] Speaker 3: lost Kenneth Walker in the off season. Let's keep this
[19:40] Speaker 3: guy who's very talented on ice until the regular season.
[19:43] Speaker 3: It's also like pretty fascinating to me to consider the
[19:47] Speaker 3: idea that this was a guy who most people did.
[19:50] Speaker 3: not see as a first round pick maybe early second
[19:52] Speaker 3: round ends up going in the first round and can
[19:55] Speaker 3: come into a camp and then flash at that level
[19:58] Speaker 3: that and look so much better than his peers when
[20:00] Speaker 3: he was just in college like that that will forever
[20:03] Speaker 3: fascinate me when guys just show up like that and
[20:05] Speaker 3: are that much better right away if.
[20:07] Speaker 1: You've got the juice, like Casey Concepcion is a great
[20:10] Speaker 1: example and Denzel Boston in the way that he is
[20:13] Speaker 1: a ball winner, but that's different. Like Jadarian Price and Concepcion,
[20:18] Speaker 1: like they just move different. And like you either have
[20:20] Speaker 1: that or you don't, I think at some level. And
[20:24] Speaker 1: it probably takes the NFL coaches to see like, oh yeah,
[20:28] Speaker 1: him compared to the other guys on the field, he
[20:30] Speaker 1: just moves different. So I'm very excited about him. He
[20:33] Speaker 1: could be a better pro in terms of production, certainly.
[20:37] Speaker 1: this year than he was at Notre Dame last year.
[20:40] Speaker 4: He was stuck behind Jeremiah Love.
[20:42] Speaker 1: It's really crazy. A couple other rookies that I see
[20:44] Speaker 1: as risers. Akeem Mesidor has had a great camp for
[20:47] Speaker 1: the Chargers. I would package two running backs. Kalen Black
[20:52] Speaker 1: for the 49ers. Once he got back from his injuries,
[20:55] Speaker 1: looked great. Mike Washington, we've talked about on the show
[20:57] Speaker 1: a lot for the Raiders, has looked great. Caleb Elarms,
[21:01] Speaker 1: or for the Bills, not a household name, has a
[21:04] Speaker 1: real chance. I think he's going to start for this
[21:06] Speaker 1: team at linebacker. Fourth round pick. I didn't have many
[21:09] Speaker 1: day three guys here in the rookie risers. I would
[21:12] Speaker 1: also throw in Douglas, Caleb Douglas, who I mentioned with
[21:14] Speaker 1: the Dolphins before. And then Jayshon Barham, another guy who's
[21:18] Speaker 1: had some injuries, but has really wowed everyone today. that
[21:22] Speaker 1: watched him out of that group. And if you have
[21:25] Speaker 1: any others, feel free to throw them out of that group, though.
[21:28] Speaker 1: Is there anyone that stands out to you as exciting?
[21:30] Speaker 3: Oh, this reminds me of how much I enjoy when
[21:33] Speaker 3: guys leave college and go to the NFL and they
[21:35] Speaker 3: change uniforms and I can actually enjoy watching them play football.
[21:37] Speaker 3: Jay Sean Barham being one as an Ohio state fan,
[21:39] Speaker 3: I can't enjoy watching Michigan in any capacity to see
[21:42] Speaker 3: him go to the NFL and then immediately flash. I'm like, yes,
[21:45] Speaker 3: he's one of my favorite players of the preseason. I
[21:46] Speaker 3: cannot wait to see how he fits into this Cowboys
[21:49] Speaker 3: defense at the second level, how much playing time they
[21:51] Speaker 3: give him as part of a remade defense that I
[21:53] Speaker 3: think is going to be a lot better than people
[21:55] Speaker 3: expect with Christian Parker, the new DC overseeing things.
[21:58] Speaker 4: So I'm excited to watch him play as well.
[21:59] Speaker 3: And I'm really curious to see exactly how Mesador fits
[22:02] Speaker 3: into this front with the chargers, given that Khalil Mack
[22:05] Speaker 3: is there and everything else, but he was one half
[22:06] Speaker 3: of a great edge rushing tandem at Miami with Ruben Bain.
[22:09] Speaker 3: And to see both of them come in and find
[22:11] Speaker 3: success would just be fulfilling to somebody like me who
[22:14] Speaker 3: really enjoys watching the top players in college football, take
[22:16] Speaker 3: that immediate next step and make a difference.
[22:18] Speaker 1: Bryce Lance was another day three pick. I wish I
[22:21] Speaker 1: mentioned he has come on strong. According to the saints
[22:24] Speaker 1: reporters in the last week and a half at the
[22:27] Speaker 1: joint practices, And he's going to have a role. Unfortunately,
[22:31] Speaker 1: it's because of injuries there, including to Jordan Tyson. But
[22:35] Speaker 1: I think Bryce Lance and then Barry and Brown as
[22:39] Speaker 1: a late round pick as a return guy and kind
[22:41] Speaker 1: of a number four receiver. Those guys are going to
[22:44] Speaker 1: play for the Saints. So I would include them in
[22:46] Speaker 1: the rookie risers. It was easier for me to fall
[22:50] Speaker 1: or to find the rookie fallers. Jordan Tyson has to
[22:54] Speaker 1: be at the top of the list. And it comes
[22:56] Speaker 1: with an asterisk.
[22:57] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[22:58] Speaker 1: If any rookie was impressing more on the field than
[23:03] Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson until the moment that he hurt his hamstring
[23:08] Speaker 1: like he did for so much of college and was
[23:10] Speaker 1: out for two months. But you just worry that this
[23:13] Speaker 1: could haunt his entire rookie season. I hope they're just
[23:16] Speaker 1: so careful with him that by the time he gets back,
[23:19] Speaker 1: he can then have a productive second half of the season,
[23:21] Speaker 1: whatever it's going to turn out to be.
[23:24] Speaker 3: It's especially disappointing for a team that, you know, you
[23:26] Speaker 3: have Chris Olave on a new deal in there, but
[23:28] Speaker 3: you needed a running mate in this passing offense, especially
[23:31] Speaker 3: with Tyler Shuck coming into year two with a lot
[23:33] Speaker 3: of optimism based on how he finished last season.
[23:35] Speaker 4: But that's always been the rub with Tyson. And the idea,
[23:38] Speaker 4: you know, if it was, it would be one thing
[23:39] Speaker 4: if it was even.
[23:39] Speaker 3: An ankle, you It's the idea that it's a hamstring
[23:42] Speaker 3: for the type of player he is and the injury
[23:43] Speaker 3: history that he has is that this is going to
[23:45] Speaker 3: take a while. And you're absolutely right. I worry that
[23:47] Speaker 3: it might haunt his rookie season. I hope that it doesn't.
[23:49] Speaker 3: I hope that he can come back fully healthy and
[23:51] Speaker 3: then make a contribution down basically what's going to be
[23:53] Speaker 3: the back half of the regular season. But it's a
[23:55] Speaker 3: real bummer and just a hit to the optimism surrounding
[23:58] Speaker 3: the Saints right now.
[23:58] Speaker 4: But that doesn't change my pick. I'm still with him
[24:01] Speaker 4: to win the division, baby.
[24:04] Speaker 2: I cannot agree. I think this division could be a mess.
[24:06] Speaker 4: You got to be different somewhere.
[24:07] Speaker 2: I think this division could be a mess.
[24:10] Speaker 1: I'm even starting to get a little worried about my Bucs,
[24:14] Speaker 1: at least offensively. Some of the reporting of how the
[24:17] Speaker 1: offensive practices are going, but I'm staying strong with them
[24:20] Speaker 1: as the winner of the NFC South. Caleb Banks was
[24:24] Speaker 1: a surprising first round pick. First pick of the post-Quessy era.
[24:31] Speaker 1: He was the GM of the Vikings till... Kevin O'Connell
[24:34] Speaker 1: might've won a power struggle and Caleb Banks is not
[24:38] Speaker 1: a player that is expected to make much contribution if
[24:41] Speaker 1: any early in the season. So I would consider him
[24:43] Speaker 1: a faller right now. It looks like a project. The
[24:45] Speaker 1: Jets rookies in general loved it on paper. It's not
[24:50] Speaker 1: going great so far. No reason to panic this. These
[24:52] Speaker 1: are four or five year contracts, but Kenyon Sadiq has
[24:55] Speaker 1: been hurt. He's the tight end that they took in
[24:58] Speaker 1: the middle of the first round that they expected to
[25:00] Speaker 1: be a big part of the, offense. Omar Cooper, late
[25:03] Speaker 1: first round, hasn't necessarily made a big impact battling for snaps.
[25:10] Speaker 1: D'Angelo Pons, undersized cornerback who I really like, kind of
[25:13] Speaker 1: the next Aaron Glenn, but he hasn't been healthy at all.
[25:17] Speaker 1: So that's three guys that you took near the top
[25:21] Speaker 1: of your draft that don't look like they've had a
[25:24] Speaker 1: productive training camp.
[25:25] Speaker 2: The good thing is you do have David Bailey. Who's
[25:27] Speaker 2: had an awesome one.
[25:28] Speaker 1: So I didn't want to be all negative about the jets.
[25:30] Speaker 1: And David Bailey was the number two overall pick. And
[25:33] Speaker 1: I think has calmed any fears that he would just
[25:35] Speaker 1: be like a one trick pony. When that one trick
[25:37] Speaker 1: is getting off the ball faster than everyone else, it
[25:39] Speaker 1: can work at any level.
[25:40] Speaker 2: Apparently.
[25:41] Speaker 3: Yeah. Not all is lost because your top pick is
[25:43] Speaker 3: looking awesome. And that's a good thing, but yeah, I'm, I'm,
[25:46] Speaker 3: it always sucks when a rookie with high expectations gets
[25:49] Speaker 3: hurt or is dealing with injuries in their first camp.
[25:51] Speaker 4: It's common.
[25:52] Speaker 3: Like it's, it's not something that, you know, comes as
[25:54] Speaker 3: a surprise sometimes, but this was a group that I
[25:56] Speaker 3: think this may have been my favorite class of this
[25:59] Speaker 3: entire draft. I like the Browns a lot too, but
[26:01] Speaker 3: I thought the jets was just very strong, a bunch
[26:02] Speaker 3: of names and guys that I were my favorites in
[26:05] Speaker 3: college football. And so the Sadiq thing hurts because he
[26:08] Speaker 3: still has some things to prove. as a hyper athletic
[26:11] Speaker 3: tight end with relatively inconsistent hands. I wanted to see
[26:13] Speaker 3: how he fit into this offense and how he works
[26:14] Speaker 3: with Gino Smith, the veteran quarterback who knows how to
[26:16] Speaker 3: use his tight ends.
[26:17] Speaker 5: Right.
[26:17] Speaker 3: But I think what bothers me the most or what
[26:19] Speaker 3: bums me out the most is D'Angelo Pons because he
[26:22] Speaker 3: was just, he's one of those guys that it's really
[26:24] Speaker 3: hard not to root for in a secondary that certainly
[26:27] Speaker 3: needs some difference makers. Do you hope that with the
[26:29] Speaker 3: passage of time, they get back healthy, they can make
[26:31] Speaker 3: a difference. But as we enter the season, it does
[26:33] Speaker 3: dim the light of optimism just a little bit. Yeah.
[26:35] Speaker 1: The rest of my rookies are impacted by injuries. Jeremiah Love,
[26:40] Speaker 1: for the Cardinals, has a high ankle sprain, might not
[26:42] Speaker 1: be ready for the start of the season. The second
[26:44] Speaker 1: round pick for the Cardinals was a guard, Chase Besantis,
[26:47] Speaker 1: who's going to miss the entire season. CJ Allen, a
[26:50] Speaker 1: linebacker for the Colts in the second round, expected to
[26:53] Speaker 1: start right away, has missed much of camp, now not
[26:56] Speaker 1: looking like a starter. Max Ihanachor, the potential starting right tackle,
[27:01] Speaker 1: first round pick for the Steelers, hasn't been healthy. Might
[27:04] Speaker 1: get back on the field in time for the preseason
[27:06] Speaker 1: this week, and that would give him a late start
[27:08] Speaker 1: chance to earn a job or at least a high
[27:11] Speaker 1: level backup role. And then a guy who has been
[27:14] Speaker 1: mostly healthy until just this last week is tight end
[27:17] Speaker 1: Eli Stowers for the Eagles, but he is now out
[27:21] Speaker 1: with an injury. Makai Lemon has missed a lot of
[27:24] Speaker 1: camp too. And Stowers reportedly just didn't look ready for primetime.
[27:28] Speaker 1: It happens, especially at tight end. And I just don't
[27:31] Speaker 1: think he's going to have a role early in the season.
[27:33] Speaker 1: Hopefully Makai Lemon is healthy enough to for week one.
[27:36] Speaker 2: We'll find out.
[27:37] Speaker 1: Let's take a break. That was our rookie risers and fallers.
[27:41] Speaker 1: When we come back, I'm going to get you up
[27:43] Speaker 1: to date. The injury situations now after five weeks of
[27:47] Speaker 1: camp and preseason, we feel better about that. We feel
[27:50] Speaker 1: worse about the ones we don't know.
[28:02] Speaker 2: Back on NFL Daily. Busy time in the Shook's life.
[28:09] Speaker 2: How you doing, Shook?
[28:10] Speaker 4: Fantastic. Everything's fine. Everything's going great.
[28:13] Speaker 3: I'm playing a fake trombone right now because I think
[28:15] Speaker 3: that's the instrument being played on this music.
[28:17] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[28:17] Speaker 1: It's going crazy. Let's do it. Shook's got what you
[28:21] Speaker 1: call good problems. He's a wanted man. He's got lots
[28:24] Speaker 1: of roles, lots of jobs, a lot of things to do.
[28:27] Speaker 1: And he's going to be on NFL Daily a lot
[28:29] Speaker 1: this season. Hopefully, we're not just talking about injuries all
[28:32] Speaker 1: the time, but that is how we're kind of wrapping
[28:35] Speaker 1: this show here, just in terms of situations that we
[28:38] Speaker 1: feel worse about after this last month. I have to
[28:42] Speaker 1: start with Nick Bosa. They say he could return next
[28:47] Speaker 1: week to practice, potentially.
[28:49] Speaker 2: I don't know what level of practice.
[28:51] Speaker 1: The reality is we're hearing things in late July that
[28:55] Speaker 1: he looks better than he did before. And the guy
[28:58] Speaker 1: just hasn't practiced. He's so important for that team. Mike Evans,
[29:03] Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier, should return to practice. I'm less worried
[29:06] Speaker 1: about him, but Bosa is part of a 49ers team
[29:10] Speaker 1: that had 23 players out of practice recently this week.
[29:15] Speaker 1: Just devastated across positions, especially wide receiver. And yet Bosa is,
[29:20] Speaker 1: And then quietly, Michael Williams is still on the PUP list.
[29:23] Speaker 2: I went to check on that.
[29:23] Speaker 1: I was like, whatever happened with him, their first round
[29:25] Speaker 1: pick from a year ago, he's still on the PUP
[29:27] Speaker 1: list too.
[29:29] Speaker 2: That edge spot has me worried because of Bosa.
[29:32] Speaker 3: It's, it's, it's just continues to happen with this team.
[29:35] Speaker 3: I mean, Bosa kind of makes sense. He's got a
[29:37] Speaker 3: history of knee injuries and it's, the one that was repaired.
[29:40] Speaker 3: That tends to happen, and you kind of have to
[29:41] Speaker 3: be cautious with it and ramp them up slower than usual.
[29:44] Speaker 3: I guess the good news here is, hey, Fred Warner
[29:48] Speaker 3: is healthy. And you got to the divisional round of
[29:50] Speaker 3: the playoffs last year without Bosa and Fred Warner. So
[29:54] Speaker 3: they'll find a way to still be competitive. I would
[29:56] Speaker 3: just like it that they had their best players to
[29:58] Speaker 3: really maximize their potential offensively.
[30:00] Speaker 4: Luckily, it's late August.
[30:02] Speaker 2: We got a little bit of time. Okay, fair enough.
[30:04] Speaker 1: I just think Bosa is right there with Trent Williams
[30:08] Speaker 1: and Brock Purdy as the most important guys. Fred Warner, too.
[30:12] Speaker 1: But they just need to have him be a difference maker.
[30:17] Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to be able to ultimately
[30:19] Speaker 1: compete to win that division and then Suddenly you're in
[30:22] Speaker 1: third and the best you can hope for is like, hey,
[30:24] Speaker 1: we got to try to do what we did last year,
[30:26] Speaker 1: which would have been win in Philadelphia, win in Seattle,
[30:30] Speaker 1: and then win in LA, like back to back to back.
[30:33] Speaker 1: Good luck with that. You'll probably get close to shut
[30:36] Speaker 1: out in Seattle, which is what happened last year. Other
[30:39] Speaker 1: injury situations we feel worse about than we did since
[30:44] Speaker 1: the training camp period started. Trey Benson, the Cardinals running back,
[30:47] Speaker 1: has gotten waved injured since we've last taped. So he's
[30:50] Speaker 1: no longer even on the team. Never really got over
[30:53] Speaker 1: a knee surgery that he underwent. That's unfortunate to see.
[30:56] Speaker 1: Remember when they said there was too many Cardinals running backs, Shook?
[31:01] Speaker 4: Huh? Do I remember?
[31:02] Speaker 3: I remember vividly right before the draft, we had a
[31:06] Speaker 3: clip from this show shared on social that just lambasted
[31:09] Speaker 3: me for suggesting that the Cardinals might want to draft
[31:12] Speaker 3: Jeremiah Love with the third overall pick because they already.
[31:14] Speaker 4: Have too many running backs. How you feel now? You
[31:17] Speaker 4: can never have too many.
[31:19] Speaker 1: I'm patting myself on the back just for having Shook
[31:21] Speaker 1: on our show and having so much foresight. Trey Benson,
[31:26] Speaker 1: not even on the team anymore. James Conner hasn't practiced.
[31:29] Speaker 1: Sounds to me like an injury where you don't know
[31:33] Speaker 1: if he'll ever be the same guy again. And I
[31:36] Speaker 1: guess I will fully believe he's going to play in
[31:40] Speaker 1: the NFL again when I see it, but definitely doesn't
[31:42] Speaker 1: sound like he's going to be ready for week one.
[31:45] Speaker 1: And oh, by the way, Jeremiah Love has a high
[31:46] Speaker 1: ankle sprain too. So it's Tyler Algier out there by
[31:50] Speaker 1: himself right now.
[31:51] Speaker 4: And, and Bam Knight.
[31:53] Speaker 2: Okay.
[31:53] Speaker 4: Don't forget about Bam Knight.
[31:56] Speaker 2: I did. I did forget about him. Shout out to Zonovan.
[32:01] Speaker 1: Quote bam night that's that's his first name see but
[32:04] Speaker 1: you didn't know that maybe you.
[32:05] Speaker 4: Did i did i don't know if the listeners did.
[32:07] Speaker 1: The bear secondary the bear secondary is an injury situation
[32:12] Speaker 1: that i just feel worse about they have gotten progressively
[32:15] Speaker 1: injured they lost kobe bryant at safety we hit this
[32:19] Speaker 1: on our nfc north preview so go check that out
[32:22] Speaker 1: but it's just a position group where you don't want
[32:25] Speaker 1: to see all the injuries at the same position, especially
[32:28] Speaker 1: when that position had questions to begin with. And that's
[32:31] Speaker 1: exactly what happened. And they don't have a pass rush
[32:33] Speaker 1: to make up for it. The Saints injuries have kind
[32:36] Speaker 1: of slipped under the radar outside New Orleans. They had
[32:39] Speaker 1: 20 players out of practice this week. Shook.
[32:43] Speaker 2: You can make a depth chart.
[32:44] Speaker 1: Kat Terrell of ESPN did it where you just like
[32:47] Speaker 1: start listing the positions. Like there's four running backs out.
[32:50] Speaker 1: There's three edge players out. There's four offensive linemen out
[32:54] Speaker 1: and these aren't just end of the roster players necessarily.
[32:57] Speaker 1: Brian Bracey was going to be important for them. He's
[32:59] Speaker 1: out for the season. Camara, Alvin Camara, their backup running
[33:02] Speaker 1: back out for four to six weeks. We talked about
[33:04] Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson. Cam Jordan is nowhere to be found. A
[33:08] Speaker 1: potential starter at defensive end. Quincy Riley, an important player.
[33:13] Speaker 1: Christian Miller, their second round pick. And they've been a
[33:17] Speaker 1: team that has not looked good in the preseason necessarily.
[33:20] Speaker 1: Not sure about the joint practices, but a lot of injuries.
[33:24] Speaker 1: A little more antsy in terms of the Saints and
[33:29] Speaker 1: your pick to win the division than I was a
[33:31] Speaker 1: month ago.
[33:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, and I admit that I also feel some trepidation
[33:35] Speaker 3: about my selection at this point.
[33:37] Speaker 4: I haven't put that in writing yet, but it received.
[33:40] Speaker 2: You have to now.
[33:41] Speaker 1: NFL Daily is writing, bro.
[33:43] Speaker 4: You're right.
[33:44] Speaker 2: I got to stop using bro like my kids do.
[33:47] Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm not.
[33:48] Speaker 3: 11, but I'll tell you what, when Percy went down,
[33:52] Speaker 3: we had concerns.
[33:53] Speaker 4: We were like, wait, so they're kind of thin there.
[33:55] Speaker 4: And then the rest of this happened.
[33:56] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[33:57] Speaker 4: That's a, that's not great. Also, it's very strange.
[33:59] Speaker 3: As I was listening to you list that whole group
[34:02] Speaker 3: backup running back, Alvin Camara.
[34:05] Speaker 2: It's just weird. That sounds wrong.
[34:07] Speaker 1: I thought he was going to have a nice role
[34:08] Speaker 1: as a, as a third down back. And hopefully he will,
[34:11] Speaker 1: the chargers offensive line. I feel worse about they lost
[34:14] Speaker 1: their starting center. And Rashawn Slater has been in and
[34:18] Speaker 1: out of practice at left tackle. And then I started
[34:20] Speaker 1: this show talking about the commander's offensive line and their struggles.
[34:26] Speaker 1: They have me legitimately worried. They don't have a center.
[34:30] Speaker 1: I think there's a strong chance their starting center week
[34:33] Speaker 1: one is not yet on the roster, which is not
[34:36] Speaker 1: where you want to be. And you have a left
[34:39] Speaker 1: tackle situation where it's Brandon Coleman replacing Laramie Tunsell and
[34:44] Speaker 1: all pro. There's been some reporting that maybe at right tackle, Connerly,
[34:47] Speaker 1: Josh Connerly, hasn't looked great in this camp. And suddenly
[34:52] Speaker 1: you got questions kind of popping up everywhere. You have
[34:55] Speaker 1: a first-time offensive coordinator. You don't have an offensive head coach.
[34:59] Speaker 1: You have a quarterback coming off of an injury.
[35:02] Speaker 2: I hope I'm overreacting, but I feel worse about their offense.
[35:07] Speaker 1: This could be one where week one against Philadelphia, Jalen Carter,
[35:11] Speaker 1: Jalix Hunt, Jordan Davis... That you're just like, oh yeah,
[35:15] Speaker 1: I should have seen this coming. This does not look
[35:17] Speaker 1: good for the commanders.
[35:19] Speaker 3: And the worst part about it is the fact that
[35:21] Speaker 3: when we started training camp, when we talked about them,
[35:25] Speaker 3: our biggest question mark was with the receivers and who
[35:28] Speaker 3: was going to play opposite Terry McLaurin. Obviously they signed
[35:32] Speaker 3: Stefan Diggs. Traylon Burke seems like he's carved out somewhat
[35:34] Speaker 3: of a role. It was that, and it was their defense,
[35:36] Speaker 3: which has been completely remade with a bunch of veterans
[35:39] Speaker 3: as Dan Quinn tries to get control of that group
[35:41] Speaker 3: that was so terrible last year.
[35:43] Speaker 4: We didn't see this coming. Like this is, you're right,
[35:46] Speaker 4: you're right in your concern.
[35:47] Speaker 3: And the scenario that you just detailed there puts me
[35:52] Speaker 3: in a nightmare, which is Jaden Daniels under constant assault
[35:55] Speaker 3: from the Eagles. Like this is, that's bad. That's exactly
[35:59] Speaker 3: what you kind of dealt with last year, except worse.
[36:01] Speaker 3: So you better hope they figure it out quickly. Also,
[36:05] Speaker 3: do you think realistically, do you think, and you're no
[36:08] Speaker 3: doctor and I'm no doctor and we're no medical professionals.
[36:10] Speaker 4: Do you think Laramie Tunsil plays this year?
[36:13] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[36:14] Speaker 6: Right.
[36:15] Speaker 3: Because like a torn tricep, I mean, that's, that's, given
[36:18] Speaker 3: when it happened during the regular season, it makes sense.
[36:20] Speaker 3: But that's, that was what ended Joe Thomas's career. I mean,
[36:23] Speaker 3: he was going to retire after that season anyway, but
[36:24] Speaker 3: like it's, it's not an easy injury necessarily to come
[36:27] Speaker 3: back from. Yeah.
[36:28] Speaker 4: I'm curious how many games he plays, if he plays.
[36:30] Speaker 2: Fair.
[36:31] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[36:31] Speaker 1: The standard recovery anywhere from, from four to seven months.
[36:35] Speaker 1: And Dan Quinn said, we have to prepare that he's
[36:38] Speaker 1: going to miss the regular season.
[36:39] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[36:40] Speaker 1: I think the hope is that he'd be back late
[36:43] Speaker 1: in the season or for a playoff run. If it's
[36:45] Speaker 1: worth it. I'm glad you put that out there. Yeah,
[36:48] Speaker 1: because he's not returning if they look anything like the
[36:50] Speaker 1: 2025 commanders. A section I'm calling injury situations we don't
[36:54] Speaker 1: know what to think about. Alec Pierce is expected to
[36:58] Speaker 1: return to practice in some form or fashion this week.
[37:02] Speaker 1: He underwent serious ankle surgery. We haven't seen him. There
[37:07] Speaker 1: was a shot of him and Josh Downs, who both
[37:10] Speaker 1: aren't healthy right now. Josh Downs has a calf injury.
[37:12] Speaker 1: It's believed to be minor's. Alec Pierce walking a little funny.
[37:15] Speaker 1: I guess I don't know what to think about it
[37:16] Speaker 1: when it was like a little bit of a limp there, shook,
[37:21] Speaker 1: and he hasn't actually practiced football. So a lot of
[37:24] Speaker 1: these guys are the guys that they're telling me it's
[37:27] Speaker 1: going to happen. but I kind of want to see
[37:30] Speaker 1: it happen. Malik neighbors. I would throw into that bucket.
[37:34] Speaker 1: Maybe even Tucker craft would be thrown into that bucket.
[37:37] Speaker 1: At least Tucker crafts doing 11 on 11 and close
[37:40] Speaker 1: to fully practicing. Namdi Matabuike. I'd throw into that bucket. I'll,
[37:45] Speaker 1: I'll just put them all out there as guys that, okay.
[37:48] Speaker 1: Like they're making progress, but this is contact football and
[37:51] Speaker 1: it's starting in two weeks.
[37:52] Speaker 3: And I think the most concerning out of all of
[37:54] Speaker 3: them is Pierce because we've got the least amount of
[37:56] Speaker 3: information and the least examples of progress with him.
[38:00] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[38:01] Speaker 3: Was that shot that you saw pretty recent?
[38:03] Speaker 4: Like, was it within the last.
[38:04] Speaker 2: Week or two?
[38:05] Speaker 1: It was Tuesday and I'm totally overreacting. He was walking normal-ish,
[38:10] Speaker 1: but it just didn't look quite.
[38:12] Speaker 2: Right to me.
[38:13] Speaker 4: And then you couple that.
[38:14] Speaker 3: I know the downs thing is minor, but when you
[38:17] Speaker 3: couple that with the idea that maybe downs has a
[38:20] Speaker 3: calf thing that could become nagging, Suddenly the situation that
[38:23] Speaker 3: was like, no, we'll figure it out.
[38:25] Speaker 4: We'll be fine.
[38:26] Speaker 3: Gets more concerning. Also, given the fact that they felt
[38:29] Speaker 3: they needed to go sign Keenan Allen to add to
[38:31] Speaker 3: this receiving core, it kind of signals to you that
[38:34] Speaker 3: they also realized that, oh, our receiver situation might be
[38:37] Speaker 3: worse than we thought it would be.
[38:39] Speaker 1: There's a world where you have Keenan Allen as wide
[38:41] Speaker 1: receiver one in week one. Seems unlikely, very unlikely when
[38:44] Speaker 1: it comes to downs, but downs has had these. these
[38:47] Speaker 1: injuries over the years. Maybe they could call the Jets
[38:49] Speaker 1: and try to get A.D.
[38:50] Speaker 2: Mitchell back. I think A.D. Mitchell would look pretty good
[38:53] Speaker 2: on this Colts team.
[38:54] Speaker 4: I think that ship has sailed.
[38:56] Speaker 1: Neighbors, Malik Neighbors is just so important to the Giants.
[38:59] Speaker 1: We're just going to have to track it. We won't
[39:00] Speaker 1: know until we know. Miles Garrett and Pukanakua. I don't
[39:03] Speaker 1: know what to think about this. I don't think it's
[39:05] Speaker 1: great to miss all of August. The fact they wear
[39:09] Speaker 1: a Rams uniform and Matthew Stafford did this a month,
[39:11] Speaker 1: you know, last year, maybe makes me a little less excited.
[39:15] Speaker 1: And then I mentioned Nnamdi Matabuike. He hasn't really been
[39:21] Speaker 1: practicing for the Ravens. He's a defensive tackle that's trying
[39:24] Speaker 1: to come back from a serious neck injury. And that's
[39:26] Speaker 1: why I warn with this entire group of players. that
[39:31] Speaker 1: it's great to hear that first report. They're back at practice,
[39:35] Speaker 1: but there are many steps to go after that. That's
[39:38] Speaker 1: going to go for Nick Bosa, too, to actually be
[39:40] Speaker 1: ready to play on Sundays. And this group of players,
[39:43] Speaker 1: I don't think we really know if they're going to
[39:46] Speaker 1: be ready. And yet, the defensive line was good enough
[39:49] Speaker 1: to to dominate the commanders this week at joint practice.
[39:52] Speaker 2: They're not a bad looking defensive line.
[39:53] Speaker 1: I guess, shook either way, whether they have him out
[39:55] Speaker 1: of week eight or not, but he's a big difference maker.
[39:57] Speaker 3: I think the most important follow-up question when somebody says
[40:00] Speaker 3: they're back at practice is in what capacity, right? Because
[40:03] Speaker 3: that will tell you how long until they're back to themselves.
[40:06] Speaker 3: And if they can ever get back to themselves within
[40:07] Speaker 3: the confines of the season schedule, you know, the, the
[40:10] Speaker 3: matter VK thing with the Ravens, they at least had
[40:12] Speaker 3: time to prepare for this. They've known about this for
[40:14] Speaker 3: almost a year at this point. So they're not completely caught,
[40:18] Speaker 3: you know, blindsided. I'm not worried about Myles Garrett and Pukunukua.
[40:21] Speaker 3: I know that you think like, well, you know, Myles
[40:24] Speaker 3: Garrett swelling in the knee, that's concerning. And sure, it
[40:27] Speaker 3: is to a degree, but also does Myles Garrett need
[40:29] Speaker 3: to practice?
[40:30] Speaker 5: No.
[40:30] Speaker 4: Does Pukunukua really need to practice? No, not really.
[40:33] Speaker 3: I mean, you need a little bit of a ramp
[40:34] Speaker 3: up period, but that's what week one practice is for
[40:37] Speaker 3: at this point for guys like that.
[40:38] Speaker 4: So I'm not too concerned with their situations.
[40:41] Speaker 1: I like being the voice of reason. That's what we
[40:44] Speaker 1: need for J.J. McCarthy fans out there. It's tough living.
[40:48] Speaker 2: He had a little bit of an injury situation. I
[40:51] Speaker 2: do wonder if.
[40:52] Speaker 1: He will be an ex-Minnesota Viking when we tape on
[40:56] Speaker 1: Sunday evening. He is going to split reps right now
[41:00] Speaker 1: with Carson Wentz for the QB2 job, but that's actually
[41:03] Speaker 1: a change. They're now giving Wentz more reps. We have
[41:07] Speaker 1: injury situations we feel better about. Daniel Jones, we hit
[41:09] Speaker 1: that hard early in camp, but it has been all
[41:12] Speaker 1: systems go. That's one where You had to see it
[41:15] Speaker 1: throughout the course of camp and it's absolutely come to fruition.
[41:20] Speaker 1: He's been great in the joint practices. He's looked great.
[41:23] Speaker 1: George Kittle, I do feel better about Because it's a
[41:26] Speaker 1: torn Achilles, he has steps to go. But I wouldn't
[41:29] Speaker 1: have thought he was so in the mix to start
[41:31] Speaker 1: week one and the reporting would be so positive.
[41:33] Speaker 2: And then Patrick Mahomes.
[41:35] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. By the way, one of the greatest quarterbacks
[41:37] Speaker 1: of all time is coming off a devastating torn ACL,
[41:40] Speaker 1: the first big injury of his career. And all systems
[41:44] Speaker 1: sound like go right now, even though... Andy Reid hasn't
[41:48] Speaker 1: declared him the week one starter. Patrick Mahomes declared himself
[41:51] Speaker 1: the week one starter. Let's listen to Andy Reid talking
[41:54] Speaker 1: about his usage in the preseason.
[41:57] Speaker 7: Listen, he's looked good during the practices and doing the
[42:00] Speaker 7: stuff this week. He was a scout team quarterback and
[42:03] Speaker 7: pretty good scout team quarterback. But he's looked good. He's
[42:08] Speaker 7: looked strong. Obviously, his attitude's.
[42:13] Speaker 3: Right, so.
[42:15] Speaker 1: Andy Reed kind of freaked me out because he wouldn't
[42:17] Speaker 1: commit to Patrick Mahomes as week one starter. I was like, wait,
[42:20] Speaker 1: is there a story here? And then Mahomes made it
[42:23] Speaker 1: pretty clear that no, I'm fine. I think, and yeah,
[42:25] Speaker 1: he's just making absolute sure that he's going to be fine.
[42:30] Speaker 3: So we've had, I think three examples of how quarterbacks
[42:34] Speaker 3: coming back from injury can vary in the way that
[42:37] Speaker 3: they approach starting a new season. We've had Daniel Jones, uh,
[42:41] Speaker 3: Full bore from the jump. I'm going to be ready
[42:44] Speaker 3: week one, and there are no concerns. We've had Michael
[42:48] Speaker 3: Penix slash the Tua thing, where nobody knows what is
[42:52] Speaker 3: going on for most of training camp and preseason. And
[42:54] Speaker 3: then right in the sweet spot in the middle is
[42:57] Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes with Andy Reid just saying, hey, you know what?
[43:00] Speaker 4: This has been a long process. I've been working hard.
[43:02] Speaker 4: I aim for week one.
[43:03] Speaker 3: We're not committing to anything, but it sounds like it's
[43:06] Speaker 3: all gone according to plan. And all those Chiefs haters...
[43:09] Speaker 3: You can't avoid it when an organization does some things
[43:12] Speaker 3: well like that.
[43:12] Speaker 1: Just laying in the cut. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas
[43:15] Speaker 1: City Chiefs in 20.
[43:16] Speaker 4: In the pocket.
[43:16] Speaker 5: 26.
[43:17] Speaker 1: Eric's loving this. That the Chiefs are finally not getting
[43:21] Speaker 1: talked about. I think they need to be talked about more.
[43:24] Speaker 1: We'll be doing that on our over-unders next week before
[43:29] Speaker 1: we get there. I had a mini category to wrap
[43:32] Speaker 1: of just, remember me? Tyreek Hill. Remember Tyreek Hill? Not
[43:37] Speaker 1: going to be in the NFL, it appears, anytime soon.
[43:40] Speaker 1: Brandon Ayuk, remember when that was like a daily story?
[43:44] Speaker 1: What happened there that just sort of went away? He
[43:46] Speaker 1: bought on paper like a $ 10 million house or something
[43:50] Speaker 1: in Washington, D.C. I don't know if that was a
[43:52] Speaker 1: real thing, but he said so.
[43:56] Speaker 3: I mean, I wouldn't advise to buy a $ 10 million
[43:59] Speaker 3: house if you're not moving there.
[44:01] Speaker 2: He doesn't seem like he's moving there. I don't know.
[44:03] Speaker 1: He's still a member of the San Francisco 49ers. That's weird.
[44:06] Speaker 1: And then one, which is sadder just for the nature
[44:11] Speaker 1: of how his career went. But Joe Mixon, just not
[44:14] Speaker 1: in the NFL anymore. I don't think that that's going
[44:16] Speaker 1: to happen. So he's just stayed unsigned. And look, I
[44:22] Speaker 1: think we've done it, Shook. I think we've recapped all
[44:25] Speaker 1: of what's happened in training camp in the preseason. And
[44:28] Speaker 1: that category was remember me. We will never forget you, Shook,
[44:32] Speaker 1: even when you're on just a little bit of a
[44:35] Speaker 1: break here from the show. You have stuff to do.
[44:38] Speaker 1: I think it's maybe, you know, like a week and
[44:41] Speaker 1: a half, something like that. I just don't want the
[44:43] Speaker 1: Shook ones out there, your big fan base, to be
[44:46] Speaker 1: worried because you're going to be a huge part of
[44:50] Speaker 1: this season. We're just, you know, giving you some time
[44:53] Speaker 1: here to settle some things.
[44:55] Speaker 4: Yeah, don't worry.
