[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we will not allow our
[0:08] Speaker 1: cell phone to ring during this show. I'm Greg Rosenthal.
[0:11] Speaker 1: I'm joined by Nick Shook across the country. He better
[0:14] Speaker 1: not or else Ben Johnson will be really mad. My
[0:18] Speaker 1: favorite day of the week, Monday. Why not, because we're
[0:21] Speaker 1: going over all the news from around the league. We're
[0:23] Speaker 1: not going to hit Ben Johnson and his anger at
[0:26] Speaker 1: the podium for a little while, but we do have
[0:28] Speaker 1: a sneaky amount of stuff, including some takeaways from you
[0:31] Speaker 1: going to the big Madden twenty seven reveal shooky out
[0:35] Speaker 1: of that.
[0:35] Speaker 2: I'm ready and my phone is on silence, so we're good.
[0:38] Speaker 1: Good, Please the big news on Monday morning. Let's start
[0:42] Speaker 1: with the freshest stuff. We're going to talk a little
[0:44] Speaker 1: Russ's Hall of Fame chatter, get an early start. We
[0:47] Speaker 1: have five years to do so, but with him officially retiring,
[0:50] Speaker 1: we'll talk about that, some new contracts being signed. Baker
[0:54] Speaker 1: is making news. But let's start with the college game.
[0:58] Speaker 1: Brandon Sorosby from Texas Tech thought I was gonna need
[1:01] Speaker 1: to start really grinding some Texas Tech tape, or rather
[1:05] Speaker 1: east transferring there but watching his tape from his college
[1:10] Speaker 1: play because there was some talk after he was found
[1:14] Speaker 1: to be gambling at the college level, admitted to it,
[1:18] Speaker 1: entered rehab. The expectation was he was going to single
[1:22] Speaker 1: handedly revive the supplemental draft. I had Jets fans in
[1:25] Speaker 1: my life saying should we burn one of our first
[1:27] Speaker 1: round picks on him? Looks like they won't need to.
[1:30] Speaker 1: I don't think they would have anyways. But Soorsby has
[1:33] Speaker 1: been ruled eligible to play based on an injunction from
[1:39] Speaker 1: a judge in Lubbock, not so coincidentally that prevents the
[1:44] Speaker 1: NCAA from punishing him for gambling. He has agreed to
[1:49] Speaker 1: be suspended for the first two games of the season.
[1:52] Speaker 1: So this looks done and dusted, and it's rare to
[1:57] Speaker 1: hear anything this consequential Nick that has such a uniform reaction.
[2:02] Speaker 1: But everyone I know love and trust in the college game,
[2:05] Speaker 1: including our friend Daniel Jeremiah, thinks this is a fiasco
[2:10] Speaker 1: that the NCAA is allowing him to play after admitting
[2:14] Speaker 1: to gambling on his own games last year.
[2:16] Speaker 2: Well, it's not a fiasco, and the fact that the
[2:18] Speaker 2: NCAA is willing, like willingly allowing him to play, it's
[2:21] Speaker 2: that they're being told they must allow him to play.
[2:23] Speaker 2: If it were up to them, he would never take
[2:25] Speaker 2: the field in college football again because it threatens the
[2:27] Speaker 2: integrity of the sport. But here's the issue. The whole
[2:30] Speaker 2: stance for the NCAA on integrity and amateur athletics disappeared
[2:34] Speaker 2: when nil became a thing, and they're just slowly losing
[2:36] Speaker 2: the remaining control they have to enforce their own rules.
[2:39] Speaker 2: So it's a fiasco because it's another you know, strike
[2:42] Speaker 2: against the ncublea's existence. So we'll see how this kind
[2:45] Speaker 2: of plays into that. But as a concern Soresby, it's
[2:48] Speaker 2: best for him to continue playing college football. You know,
[2:51] Speaker 2: he had his best season of his career at Cincinnati
[2:53] Speaker 2: last year. And some people are interested in his size,
[2:56] Speaker 2: you know, six foot three, he's mobile, He's like the
[2:59] Speaker 2: dual threat type that you want in your modern college
[3:01] Speaker 2: quarterback coming to the NFL. But I don't think that
[3:03] Speaker 2: he has the tape necessarily to back up a strong
[3:06] Speaker 2: draft projection at this point. He needs the last season.
[3:09] Speaker 2: You know, you look at his stats from last year.
[3:10] Speaker 2: Not to dive too deep into it, but he finished
[3:12] Speaker 2: at the twenty seven to five touchdown interception ratio and
[3:14] Speaker 2: had very strong numbers. But I always go back to
[3:16] Speaker 2: the first game of the year, which is the loss
[3:17] Speaker 2: they had against Nebraska, a very run heavy game in
[3:20] Speaker 2: which he finished with sixty nine passing yards on thirteen
[3:22] Speaker 2: to twenty five. If that was your only game tape
[3:24] Speaker 2: you saw of him, you'd think, why are we making
[3:25] Speaker 2: such a big deal out of this. Obviously he had
[3:27] Speaker 2: a very successful season from there, but the big test
[3:30] Speaker 2: comes playing for Texas Tech, a team that has dumped
[3:33] Speaker 2: money into nil, a team that made the College football
[3:35] Speaker 2: Playoff last year. This is where we're going to find
[3:37] Speaker 2: out whether he's got what it takes to become a
[3:40] Speaker 2: quality NFL prospect. In order to do that, he's got
[3:42] Speaker 2: to be on the field, So I guess it's good
[3:43] Speaker 2: for him. He's going to miss the first two games
[3:46] Speaker 2: the season as part of the agreement of that deal,
[3:48] Speaker 2: but we're going to see him on the field for
[3:50] Speaker 2: the important games and we'll get everything we need to
[3:52] Speaker 2: know about him prior to him going to the NFL.
[3:54] Speaker 1: Right, you can lose games and make the college football playoffs.
[3:56] Speaker 1: You can lose multiple games. One of those two games
[3:59] Speaker 1: is in against Appen Christian, so that barely counts. They
[4:03] Speaker 1: can certainly beat Oregon State or compete with Oregon State
[4:07] Speaker 1: with a backup quarterback anyways, But I had asked around
[4:10] Speaker 1: because this was coming. The supplemental draft has literally been
[4:13] Speaker 1: dead for four or five years, and there hasn't been
[4:15] Speaker 1: many significant players going that route. There was talk of, like,
[4:19] Speaker 1: you know, you know, in terms of pure ross skill set,
[4:22] Speaker 1: he could be someone teams really get excited about. I
[4:25] Speaker 1: did not get the sense that any team would probably
[4:28] Speaker 1: give up anything above a third round pick. I think
[4:31] Speaker 1: that's where the draft would have started. But maybe a
[4:34] Speaker 1: team like the Jets or some team that wanted to
[4:36] Speaker 1: get a year, you know, head start, and had an
[4:39] Speaker 1: extra third I think there would have been a conversation
[4:42] Speaker 1: whether he got taken in the third, fourth round.
[4:45] Speaker 3: Who knows.
[4:46] Speaker 1: Back in the day, he used to kind of say
[4:47] Speaker 1: supplemental draft like knock him.
[4:49] Speaker 3: Down around off of where he normally would would go.
[4:52] Speaker 1: But who knows what the rules are anymore? Either way,
[4:56] Speaker 1: who knows it rules even matter? I mean, if you
[4:58] Speaker 1: can gamble on your own team, oh and just still
[5:01] Speaker 1: keep playing.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a problem. I understand the nils argument in this.
[5:06] Speaker 3: It's not a slippery slope.
[5:07] Speaker 1: That's just the cliff, like the rubicon has been passed,
[5:10] Speaker 1: and I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to this story,
[5:13] Speaker 1: and that if this precedent changes down the road, because look,
[5:17] Speaker 1: weifford stories. He can't be gambling on NFL media, Chuck.
[5:21] Speaker 1: We heard some pretty reliable stories. So someone's name got
[5:26] Speaker 1: caught in the uh, you know, in the ether by
[5:30] Speaker 1: one of these gambling houses, and bye bye NFL media.
[5:34] Speaker 3: So we're off.
[5:35] Speaker 1: And it's crazy that Brandon Sowaresby is still playing, but
[5:37] Speaker 1: it's good for his career. Baker Mayfield is looking to
[5:41] Speaker 1: make more money franchise quarterback money. He's been on one
[5:45] Speaker 1: of the best deals in terms of team value for
[5:48] Speaker 1: the last few years. I've got three year, one hundred
[5:51] Speaker 1: million dollar contracts. So he's right at the bottom of
[5:54] Speaker 1: kind of the veteran quarterback market making about thirty three
[5:57] Speaker 1: million dollars a year. He wants a raise entering his
[6:00] Speaker 1: contract year, and he didn't sound happy about how the
[6:04] Speaker 1: negotiations are going.
[6:06] Speaker 4: Yeah, contract stuff, it's happening.
[6:08] Speaker 5: It's starting the talks and whatnot, but not anywhere close
[6:12] Speaker 5: to what you know, we were thinking. So would love
[6:17] Speaker 5: to be here long term and as of right now,
[6:19] Speaker 5: that's that's not exactly the case. But I'm under contract
[6:21] Speaker 5: for twenty twenty six, and the guys in that locker room,
[6:24] Speaker 5: the staff know that I'm still gonna be me. I'm
[6:27] Speaker 5: still gonna do everything I can to help this team
[6:29] Speaker 5: win a Super Bowl, and that's to me.
[6:30] Speaker 4: That's the priority. Everything else to take care of itself.
[6:33] Speaker 5: Obviously, yes, I would love to have a long term
[6:35] Speaker 5: deal done, but they know my deadline is as soon
[6:38] Speaker 5: as training camp starts.
[6:39] Speaker 4: We're not doing any contract stuff.
[6:40] Speaker 5: It's all ball, so it's not up to me when
[6:44] Speaker 5: that gets done by but so hopefully hopefully before that.
[6:47] Speaker 4: If not, we're gonna still gonna have a good year.
[6:50] Speaker 1: Good clip to listen to versus just read the headline
[6:53] Speaker 1: where it says not anywhere close set to deadline. I
[6:56] Speaker 1: think Baker Mayfield kind of straddled the line perfectly, just
[7:00] Speaker 1: saying where they're at. The Bucks, according to multiple reports,
[7:04] Speaker 1: had one initial offer that clearly Baker's camp is not
[7:08] Speaker 1: happy with. They have not sent a counter offer. We'll
[7:10] Speaker 1: see if this thing happens in the summer. But he's
[7:13] Speaker 1: also setting a deadline for the start of camp, which
[7:16] Speaker 1: is pretty early in the process or this is kind
[7:19] Speaker 1: of a story with Baker in his contract year that
[7:21] Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about all season long.
[7:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, I respect the approach because it eliminates the distraction,
[7:26] Speaker 2: which you know, if you can just set a hard
[7:28] Speaker 2: deadline of we're stopping negotiating here, then it gets rid
[7:31] Speaker 2: of the questions that are going to follow. But they're
[7:33] Speaker 2: still going to follow because it's the contract year. And
[7:35] Speaker 2: I also understand why they would take that approach given
[7:38] Speaker 2: his earning power, because he's coming off of a season
[7:40] Speaker 2: in which he was, you know, significantly affected by injury.
[7:43] Speaker 2: This whole offense was affected significantly by injury. We know
[7:46] Speaker 2: what happened with the Buccaneers over the last month and
[7:48] Speaker 2: a half of the season. It's not the best time
[7:50] Speaker 2: for him to sign an extension if that's the most recent,
[7:52] Speaker 2: you know, subset of data that you have when you're
[7:54] Speaker 2: trying to evaluate what he's worth to this team. So
[7:57] Speaker 2: it's best for him to try to go out there
[7:59] Speaker 2: and earn max value by having a bounce back year.
[8:01] Speaker 2: Not that he had a terrible year. He had a
[8:03] Speaker 2: great start to the year, he just didn't finish it strongly.
[8:05] Speaker 2: So he is a streaky player. But for him financially,
[8:07] Speaker 2: it makes the most sense and also mentally it makes
[8:10] Speaker 2: the most sense to stop here. I also can't envision
[8:12] Speaker 2: a world in which the Buccaneers would really consider not
[8:15] Speaker 2: signing him as just a matter of negotiation. As you know,
[8:19] Speaker 2: the Buccaneers throw out that first offer and Baker's group
[8:22] Speaker 2: doesn't counter. Got to build that leverage. Baby, We're a
[8:24] Speaker 2: long way away in the negotiating process right.
[8:27] Speaker 1: If it happens, it'll happen in kind of that dead
[8:29] Speaker 1: zone during July. But I do think he's a particularly
[8:33] Speaker 1: fascinating quarterback contract case because you know, someone I respect
[8:37] Speaker 1: a lot who we now work with at NFL Media.
[8:39] Speaker 1: Brett Coleman kind of pointed out on Twitter, no matter
[8:42] Speaker 1: what you think of Baker right now, he's the sixteenth
[8:44] Speaker 1: highest paid quarterback, you'd probably have him ranked higher than sixteen,
[8:48] Speaker 1: which is like an easy way to.
[8:49] Speaker 3: Think about him.
[8:50] Speaker 1: But I was a part of a podcast with Nate
[8:53] Speaker 1: Tyson Bill Barnwell where we went through and ranked the
[8:56] Speaker 1: guys and drafted him for just this season, we're going
[8:58] Speaker 1: to be doing something similar on our show, and we
[9:00] Speaker 1: took eighteen quarterbacks. He didn't get taken, and I think
[9:03] Speaker 1: reasonable minds could disagree. Put him fifteen sixteen, put him
[9:07] Speaker 1: eighteen nineteen. But that's how good and deep quarterbacks are
[9:12] Speaker 1: right now. I think it is the deepest collection of
[9:15] Speaker 1: quality starting quarterbacks since I've started covering the league twenty
[9:19] Speaker 1: years ago.
[9:19] Speaker 3: Right now, like we're twenty twenty.
[9:21] Speaker 1: Five deep of like guys that you feel pretty good about,
[9:24] Speaker 1: and so Baker is clearly in that middle range. How
[9:27] Speaker 1: much do you pay for that? If I'm Jason Light,
[9:30] Speaker 1: part of me wants to have my cake and eat
[9:31] Speaker 1: it too. Make it look like we're negotiating well with Baker.
[9:35] Speaker 1: Don't make him too mad. But he's thirty one years old,
[9:39] Speaker 1: he's undersized. Let's see if he's better this year. Because
[9:42] Speaker 1: if he's not better this year, I'm willing to play
[9:45] Speaker 1: that out with a franchise tag, see what happens. Possibly trade,
[9:48] Speaker 1: you know, trade him and see what's behind door number
[9:51] Speaker 1: two in about twelve months.
[9:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. It's funny that you mentioned those
[9:55] Speaker 2: eighteen guys that you took and he wasn't in that group.
[9:57] Speaker 2: He landed seventeenth on my end of twenty twenty fe
[10:00] Speaker 2: five QB Index he's sixteenth in average salary, so he's
[10:04] Speaker 2: kind of making proper accurate money unless he has that that,
[10:08] Speaker 2: you know, significantly improved year. I think your your argument's
[10:10] Speaker 2: great and explains a lot of why they stand where
[10:12] Speaker 2: they are right now. We'll see if it changes, but
[10:14] Speaker 2: right now I think it fits.
[10:16] Speaker 1: One quarterback trying unsuccessfully to get more money. As Jacoby Brissette,
[10:21] Speaker 1: our long national nightmare is over here, Shook. He is
[10:24] Speaker 1: showing up for mandatory mini camp work this week. Doesn't
[10:28] Speaker 1: mean he has a new contract. He's still only getting
[10:29] Speaker 1: paid like five million dollars this year. He's supposedly going
[10:32] Speaker 1: to be the starter, but he is there. The Cardinals
[10:35] Speaker 1: are one of seventeen teams Shook to have mandatory mini
[10:39] Speaker 1: camp this week. The forty nine ers have canceled there
[10:43] Speaker 1: is by the way, they're done already for the offseason.
[10:45] Speaker 1: Bye bye forty nine Ers until training camp, and most
[10:49] Speaker 1: of these teams that have the mandatory mini camp are
[10:52] Speaker 1: also done for the offseason after this week. The Dolphins
[10:57] Speaker 1: and Steelers had their mandatory mini camp last week. He
[11:00] Speaker 1: just wanted to kind of update where we're at in
[11:02] Speaker 1: the off season program. But Jacoby Brissette is back, So
[11:05] Speaker 1: I don't know what that means personally for your life
[11:08] Speaker 1: and how it changes how you It.
[11:10] Speaker 2: Makes me happy because that means that I may have
[11:14] Speaker 2: one or two less what's going on with Chehoby Vrsett
[11:17] Speaker 2: and the Cardinals posts in no, because.
[11:19] Speaker 1: He's gonna be talking, but the contract isn't done and
[11:22] Speaker 1: so you still got to figure that out after this week.
[11:24] Speaker 2: Apparently it's better than him not being there at all,
[11:27] Speaker 2: because at least you have some fresh information to work off.
[11:29] Speaker 3: Of last week.
[11:30] Speaker 1: It was funny they were like, well how about you know?
[11:33] Speaker 1: They asked Marvin Harrison about well, are you, you know,
[11:36] Speaker 1: figuring things out in this new scheme with Jacoby Brissette,
[11:39] Speaker 1: and he it was kind of an unfair question. He
[11:41] Speaker 1: was like, well, no, he'd have to be here for that.
[11:45] Speaker 1: But it does make you wonder. They're talking about Carson
[11:47] Speaker 1: Beck their third round pick as a potential started this year.
[11:50] Speaker 1: You have Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brissett might lose out
[11:53] Speaker 1: on starts if he doesn't show up. Let's do some
[11:55] Speaker 1: contracts that happened since we last taped. Kristin Watson signed
[11:59] Speaker 1: a new contrack that I was surprised made a lot
[12:02] Speaker 1: of the Twitter sphere angry, why are you paying Kristin
[12:05] Speaker 1: Watson all this money? He's more of an idea of
[12:07] Speaker 1: a player than an actual player. But the total contract
[12:11] Speaker 1: terms were totally misleading. It wasn't one hundred and ten
[12:14] Speaker 1: million dollars. It was ninety seven and a half, which
[12:16] Speaker 1: is a pretty big difference. And then if you stretch
[12:19] Speaker 1: it out into five years, because it is an extension,
[12:21] Speaker 1: it's like, you know, it's a little over twenty million
[12:25] Speaker 1: dollars a year for five years, which actually, to me
[12:29] Speaker 1: seems like a great value. He signed a thirty one
[12:32] Speaker 1: million dollar signing bonus. He showed a lot last year
[12:35] Speaker 1: when he came back from his injury, and I think
[12:38] Speaker 1: that's what helped get him this deal.
[12:40] Speaker 2: Right, And you know, in terms of apy where he
[12:42] Speaker 2: would land right now among all receivers between Jacoby Myers
[12:45] Speaker 2: and Chris Godwin, and at twenty seven years old, he
[12:48] Speaker 2: is firmly in the prime of his career, so it
[12:50] Speaker 2: makes all the sense of the world. I think it
[12:51] Speaker 2: also is an example of what Matt Lafleur has tried
[12:54] Speaker 2: to initiate this entire offseason, which was the strip it
[12:56] Speaker 2: down to the studs. Approach with the offense, simplifying things
[12:59] Speaker 2: by maybe getting rid of some players who weren't happy
[13:01] Speaker 2: with their roles, and then you know, clearly defining the
[13:04] Speaker 2: roles of those who are there. So how do you
[13:06] Speaker 2: get Watson in a better place? You give him an extension,
[13:09] Speaker 2: You handle that part of the equation, and then you
[13:11] Speaker 2: just pray and hope that he's on the field healthy
[13:12] Speaker 2: all year and that you can maximize what his talents are,
[13:14] Speaker 2: because I feel like for most of his career, the big,
[13:17] Speaker 2: like defining theme and the big drawback for him has
[13:19] Speaker 2: just been that he can stay healthy and stay on
[13:21] Speaker 2: the field consistently. So you pray for that, you hope
[13:24] Speaker 2: that your investment pays off, and then you look like
[13:26] Speaker 2: a genius three years from now.
[13:27] Speaker 1: He was a different player when he returned last year.
[13:29] Speaker 1: He was more of a complete player. But he's always
[13:32] Speaker 1: had the juice. He is literally the fastest player in
[13:35] Speaker 1: the NFL with the ball in his hands cumulatively over
[13:38] Speaker 1: the last four years, according to Next Gen stats.
[13:41] Speaker 3: At any position.
[13:42] Speaker 1: Now, of course, a receiver is going to have an
[13:44] Speaker 1: advantage there, and especially Christian Watson because a lot of
[13:47] Speaker 1: times he's spritten when he catches that ball and then
[13:50] Speaker 1: he keeps spritting.
[13:51] Speaker 3: But it does say.
[13:53] Speaker 1: Something that he's literally the fastest guy in the NFL
[13:55] Speaker 1: with the ball in his hands, and they're betting on
[13:58] Speaker 1: their own evaluation. Self scouting is so pot they let
[14:00] Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs go, and now it's it's Jaden Reid, it's
[14:05] Speaker 1: Christian Watson, it's Matthew Golden. They're all signed for the
[14:08] Speaker 1: next three plus years in that that's gonna be their course.
[14:12] Speaker 1: You talked about really kind of determining who their guys are.
[14:15] Speaker 1: The Steelers did the same, and one of their guys
[14:17] Speaker 1: is Darnel Washington. Another contract that I was amazed how
[14:21] Speaker 1: the reactions to it were so different. He signs a
[14:24] Speaker 1: four year, forty two million dollar extension, so only and
[14:28] Speaker 1: I say, only ten and a half million dollars a year,
[14:31] Speaker 1: but then you tack that onto his current year, it's
[14:33] Speaker 1: actually five years, forty five million dollars. I immediately thought,
[14:37] Speaker 1: this is one of the best bargains in the entire NFL,
[14:41] Speaker 1: and yet I saw a bunch of reactions. That's like,
[14:43] Speaker 1: what ten million dollars a year for a guy who's
[14:46] Speaker 1: never topped four hundred yards receiving that dude is a weapon.
[14:50] Speaker 1: In a world where Charlie Kohlar and all these blocking
[14:53] Speaker 1: tight ends are getting good contracts, Darnel Washington is the
[14:57] Speaker 1: best of all those players, and I think he is
[15:00] Speaker 1: worth even more than that, And like the Watson contract,
[15:04] Speaker 1: as long as he's healthy, that is going to age
[15:06] Speaker 1: extremely well for the Steelers.
[15:09] Speaker 2: He's an extremely difficult matchup because of his size. His
[15:12] Speaker 2: athleticism at his size is essentially built like a tackle
[15:15] Speaker 2: who also blocks and runs routes and catches footballs. But
[15:18] Speaker 2: you don't find those players just growing on trees anywhere.
[15:21] Speaker 2: But I think as a football world, and especially you
[15:24] Speaker 2: can't let the internet, you know, direct too much of
[15:26] Speaker 2: your thinking here, because the Internet is always a place
[15:28] Speaker 2: of extremes. But as a football world, we need to
[15:30] Speaker 2: understand that when we look at dollar values at face value,
[15:34] Speaker 2: we cannot simply overreact because player who you think hasn't
[15:37] Speaker 2: done that much is getting ten million dollars a year.
[15:39] Speaker 2: It's all relative to the market, and the market dictates.
[15:42] Speaker 2: Right now, he lands between Evan Ingram and Juwan Johnson
[15:45] Speaker 2: and just ahead of TJ. Howkinson, who was making good
[15:48] Speaker 2: money when he signed his deal. With the Vikings that
[15:50] Speaker 2: was a while ago. The market's increased, the cap continues
[15:52] Speaker 2: to increase. He's not getting overpaid. And when you look
[15:55] Speaker 2: at the Steelers' identity and their ability to rely on
[15:57] Speaker 2: so many different tight ends and the ability to go
[15:59] Speaker 2: heavy set and power run, even though it doesn't necessarily
[16:02] Speaker 2: always fit what Mike McCarthy has done over the course
[16:04] Speaker 2: of his career as a coach, it gives them options.
[16:06] Speaker 2: So you pay that guy at this time, you invest
[16:09] Speaker 2: now with the idea that it's going to pay off.
[16:11] Speaker 3: I'd rather have him than all those guys you just mentioned.
[16:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think its total Juwan Johnson not gonna lie.
[16:17] Speaker 2: I really liked you.
[16:18] Speaker 6: Man.
[16:18] Speaker 3: To me, it's not even close because you just have
[16:20] Speaker 3: a cla.
[16:20] Speaker 2: I'm not saying that completely, no, but yeah, I mean.
[16:24] Speaker 3: You can disagree.
[16:25] Speaker 1: But man, there was something about watching them there in
[16:30] Speaker 1: Dublin and just see what a problem he was for
[16:34] Speaker 1: the opposition that I'm just so impressed by him. And
[16:36] Speaker 1: the NFL told you how much they value tight ends
[16:38] Speaker 1: because they keep forcing these second round picks on them.
[16:40] Speaker 1: The best case scenario, one of those guys turns into
[16:43] Speaker 1: a Darnel Washington and they have him locked up. I
[16:46] Speaker 1: really like what they did with the Herbig and the
[16:48] Speaker 1: Darnel Washington signings over the last few weeks. Let's talk
[16:52] Speaker 1: about the Vikings quarterback battle, which we never really believed
[16:56] Speaker 1: was going to be a battle, and we have more
[16:59] Speaker 1: reason and to believe that. I know it's a quiet
[17:02] Speaker 1: time of year, but podcasts I listened to Purple Daily
[17:05] Speaker 1: made a big deal of this. And then like with
[17:07] Speaker 1: the headline, is the Vikings quarterback battle already over? And
[17:10] Speaker 1: it was partly off of a conversation Tom pelisera from
[17:14] Speaker 1: the NFL network, had on Kfan. But Tom, you know,
[17:17] Speaker 1: has lived in the area, has covered that team forever.
[17:20] Speaker 1: When he talks Vikings, it matters a little more to him.
[17:22] Speaker 1: And to summarize what he said, he said, look, they've
[17:25] Speaker 1: started out with the snaps fifty to fifty. He would
[17:28] Speaker 1: not be surprised if that changed starting now, you know,
[17:33] Speaker 1: starting soon, if it will no longer be fifty to fifty,
[17:36] Speaker 1: they will want to have a winner and get that
[17:39] Speaker 1: winner more snaps.
[17:41] Speaker 3: And he was not.
[17:42] Speaker 1: Saying who won necessarily or who is winning, but if
[17:46] Speaker 1: it was Kyler Murray, would there be a situation with
[17:50] Speaker 1: Carson Wentz in the building, And every time that Kevin
[17:53] Speaker 1: O'Connell can give Carson Wentz some love in front of
[17:56] Speaker 1: a podium, he does it. He just loves Carson Wentz
[17:59] Speaker 1: as his like veteran back. With Carson Wentz also in
[18:01] Speaker 1: the building, would it make sense for them to see
[18:04] Speaker 1: if they could possibly trade JJ McCarthy in the meantime
[18:09] Speaker 1: that would indicate who is winning this battle?
[18:11] Speaker 3: Could it be over before it started?
[18:13] Speaker 1: And do you think JJ McCarthy is on the Vikings
[18:16] Speaker 1: roster in week one?
[18:18] Speaker 2: M okay? So a few things have to be true
[18:23] Speaker 2: this For him to not be on the Vikings roster
[18:25] Speaker 2: of one, there has to be a significant injury elsewhere,
[18:28] Speaker 2: or there has to be such increased intrigue in JJ
[18:31] Speaker 2: McCarthy's future from one team that doesn't have an answer
[18:33] Speaker 2: right now. I'm looking at the Browns for somebody to
[18:37] Speaker 2: pick up the phone and make that phone call. But
[18:39] Speaker 2: there also has to be clear separation in camp and
[18:42] Speaker 2: preference toward Kyler Murray, which I think loses some of
[18:46] Speaker 2: the Vikings leverage, but that kind of signals that, hey,
[18:48] Speaker 2: maybe JJ is available. I think that that's the direction
[18:50] Speaker 2: we're headed in in that it's going to be Kyler's job.
[18:53] Speaker 2: We talked about this already that we believe it's already
[18:55] Speaker 2: Kyler's job. And when you listen to Tom talk about
[18:58] Speaker 2: the Vikings, like you said, it means more. It matters
[19:00] Speaker 2: more because he's extremely well connected to that building. It's
[19:03] Speaker 2: not just throwing out there, you know, brought prognostications. He
[19:06] Speaker 2: knows like he knows what's going on there, and I
[19:09] Speaker 2: think we all kind of know that this is other's
[19:11] Speaker 2: job to lose as long as the Vikings can determine
[19:14] Speaker 2: that he can play within the structure of Kevin O'Connell's offense.
[19:16] Speaker 2: And I think he's going to prove that over the
[19:17] Speaker 2: next few months. But to get a change like he's
[19:21] Speaker 2: Cayler's twenty eight years old. If that's your long term answer,
[19:23] Speaker 2: then you don't need JJ anymore. If might not capitalize
[19:26] Speaker 2: on the value associated with him while you still can.
[19:28] Speaker 1: It's just funny the competition, like when is he going
[19:31] Speaker 1: to prove it?
[19:32] Speaker 3: He doesn't.
[19:32] Speaker 4: Really.
[19:33] Speaker 1: They got to see him on the grass and get
[19:34] Speaker 1: to know him in the meetings and maybe that confirmed
[19:36] Speaker 1: what they hoped and expected. But Tom indicated, Look, they
[19:41] Speaker 1: don't want to take this thing deep into the training camp,
[19:43] Speaker 1: maybe not into training camp at all. He said this
[19:45] Speaker 1: could be determined in the spring, and then if that
[19:49] Speaker 1: was determined, and it was determined in favor of Kyler,
[19:51] Speaker 1: then JJ McCarthy could be elsewhere. I get the feeling,
[19:54] Speaker 1: and this is also listening to to this Purple Daily
[19:57] Speaker 1: Guys in just the coverage in general.
[20:01] Speaker 3: Feels a little personal.
[20:02] Speaker 1: It feels like this relationship, this marriage between Kevin O'Connell
[20:08] Speaker 1: and a high draft pick, was going to be the
[20:10] Speaker 1: franchise has gone pretty poorly and it's crazy to think,
[20:14] Speaker 1: but they could be trading a top ten pick, you know,
[20:20] Speaker 1: before it even gets to the third year for pennies
[20:24] Speaker 1: on the dollar, because what are you going to get
[20:25] Speaker 1: for Jaia McCarthy.
[20:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, trade, well, it could be worse. You know, who
[20:28] Speaker 2: would like to trade their former top five pick for
[20:31] Speaker 2: pennies on the dollar if they could? The Indianapolis Colts.
[20:34] Speaker 1: Okay, sure, I was like the forty nine ers back
[20:37] Speaker 1: in the Tree Lance days.
[20:38] Speaker 3: But no, they just told.
[20:42] Speaker 1: That just ended these things happen, speaking of the forty
[20:45] Speaker 1: nine ers and wanting to get some trade value that
[20:48] Speaker 1: they can't. Brandon Ayuk is still on the forty nine
[20:52] Speaker 1: ers roster. He had some Instagram content over the weekend.
[20:58] Speaker 1: Did you watch this shook? I wouldn't blame you if.
[21:01] Speaker 2: You'day I got a glimpse, but what I saw more
[21:02] Speaker 2: than anything was his shirtless selfie on his story.
[21:06] Speaker 1: He also had a commanders at at one point on
[21:09] Speaker 1: while shirtless too. It's a difficult situation to talk about,
[21:15] Speaker 1: but basically he was talking for a minute a couple
[21:20] Speaker 1: of minutes, almost threatening obscurely the forty nine ers. He
[21:26] Speaker 1: kept using the freight stop, running from the belt, like
[21:29] Speaker 1: you know what's gonna come? I'm you know what type
[21:31] Speaker 1: of player I am? He didn't sound well, and that's
[21:36] Speaker 1: why I think it's it's a tricky situation. I think
[21:38] Speaker 1: it's a tricky situation for the Commanders to dive into
[21:41] Speaker 1: if they're going to I have always believed that the
[21:44] Speaker 1: forty nine ers are not going to get anything for
[21:46] Speaker 1: Brandon Nayuk, and I don't think these Instagram stories are
[21:49] Speaker 1: going to help. But it's just a reminder as he
[21:53] Speaker 1: like publicly sort of challenges the forty nine ers as
[21:57] Speaker 1: he's dealing with these traffic, you know, citation and all
[22:00] Speaker 1: this other stuff that It's still a situation that is happening,
[22:04] Speaker 1: and I don't know why the forty nine ers are
[22:06] Speaker 1: continuing to hold on to him. Let's go to Denver,
[22:08] Speaker 1: where Jonathan Cooper, the edge rusher, was arrested for domestic
[22:13] Speaker 1: violence in criminal mischief charges over the weekend. It was
[22:17] Speaker 1: related to an incident with his girlfriend. Obviously, any domestic
[22:22] Speaker 1: violence charges are going to be treated very seriously by.
[22:25] Speaker 3: The team and the league.
[22:26] Speaker 1: He, unlike a lot of players who are in similar situations,
[22:30] Speaker 1: almost immediately apologized on social media to his family, community
[22:36] Speaker 1: and friends. That was on an Instagram story post, and
[22:40] Speaker 1: so we will be tracking that. The league and the
[22:42] Speaker 1: Broncos confirmed they are aware and they are monitoring the situation.
[22:46] Speaker 1: All right, that's kind of our hard news portion of
[22:48] Speaker 1: the show, Chuck. We're going to take a quick break
[22:50] Speaker 1: and we're going to come back with a lot of
[22:52] Speaker 1: sound with Ben Jonson, who we talked about before, with
[22:54] Speaker 1: Dan Campbell, Trent Williams, some fallout from the Big trades
[22:57] Speaker 1: last week, and yes, as I mentioned, little takeaways from Madden.
[23:02] Speaker 3: Let's take a break. We'll be back in a minute.
[23:12] Speaker 3: Back on NFL Daily.
[23:13] Speaker 1: While Shook was hob nobbing with all the gamers influencers
[23:21] Speaker 1: covering the release of the new Madden I was out
[23:25] Speaker 1: here grinding tape on social media and nothing was getting
[23:29] Speaker 1: more reactions shook than Ben Johnson getting very upset. This
[23:33] Speaker 1: actually happened like the second we last taped. Our taped
[23:36] Speaker 1: our last show, and it cracked me up so much
[23:38] Speaker 1: that we had to play it on our news recap.
[23:41] Speaker 1: Let's listen to Ben Johnson getting interrupted at the podium.
[23:45] Speaker 7: I'm really pleased with the teaching progression. I've been able
[23:47] Speaker 7: to sit in some meetings and I love how the
[23:49] Speaker 7: coaches are going about their business. I like how the
[23:52] Speaker 7: players are responding to it. Right now, we're all on
[23:54] Speaker 7: the same page. We're speaking the same language, and that's
[23:57] Speaker 7: always a good starting point.
[23:59] Speaker 5: Oh, now that you've got a year under your belt,
[24:04] Speaker 5: how does it feel?
[24:05] Speaker 3: How do you feel about your position, what you're doing?
[24:09] Speaker 7: Somebody want to take their phone so I'm not interrupted again? Thanks?
[24:19] Speaker 2: Okay, I can I defend him please? When Well, First off,
[24:25] Speaker 2: it's funny because when we were talking earlier in the show,
[24:28] Speaker 2: I got a phone call too, but my phone didn't
[24:30] Speaker 2: ring when I am in public and I'm in his
[24:34] Speaker 2: setting in which somebody is speaking and something like this
[24:37] Speaker 2: is happening, wedding reception, anything, and I hear a phone
[24:41] Speaker 2: start ringing. I get extremely anxious because I'm like, oh
[24:44] Speaker 2: my god, how did you leave that on? Oh my god,
[24:46] Speaker 2: that's interrupting everything. However, never have I thought I'm going
[24:50] Speaker 2: to get so angry that I'm just going to direct
[24:52] Speaker 2: I mean, I felt like he was. You were getting
[24:54] Speaker 2: yelled at in high school class by your teacher.
[24:57] Speaker 3: It's why it helps to watch the video.
[24:59] Speaker 1: We thank everyone that's checking out NFL daily on YouTube,
[25:02] Speaker 1: like subscribe. Uh, we're putting these shows up after after
[25:07] Speaker 1: the audio and sometimes just with the audio and his face.
[25:12] Speaker 3: He was furious.
[25:14] Speaker 1: It almost gave me a little bit of a takeaway,
[25:18] Speaker 1: which was why is Ben Jonson this tight and amped
[25:24] Speaker 1: up and nervous in the middle of May or at
[25:29] Speaker 1: the end of May they started June, We're at ots.
[25:32] Speaker 1: It's it's a huge faux pad. The reporter apologized publicly.
[25:35] Speaker 1: Terrible job by the reporter. I'm not I'm not saying
[25:38] Speaker 1: it's not, but just for him to just completely lose
[25:41] Speaker 1: his temper in that moment was just like he didn't
[25:45] Speaker 1: completely maybe not completely.
[25:46] Speaker 2: He was very controlled, but that the sign was when
[25:48] Speaker 2: he put his head down. That's fair, That's fair because
[25:50] Speaker 2: that was him seething like I cannot believe somebody left
[25:53] Speaker 2: their ring or on right now, you know what, I understand.
[25:55] Speaker 1: I get it, I get it. I'm just saying it's June.
[25:58] Speaker 1: I'm worried about his his stress level because good point,
[26:02] Speaker 1: he didn't lose his temper. But I'm worried about the
[26:04] Speaker 1: stress level of him holding in what was a joke,
[26:09] Speaker 1: intense rage.
[26:10] Speaker 3: He wanted to kill someone.
[26:12] Speaker 1: But maybe that that's why he gets the great performances
[26:15] Speaker 1: out of his bears that he does. They're all afraid
[26:17] Speaker 1: of him. Dan Campbell, I think has a softer touch.
[26:20] Speaker 1: Let's listen to him talk about one of his favorite players,
[26:24] Speaker 1: Jimmy or Games.
[26:25] Speaker 6: Well, Gibbs is, I mean he is. He's going to
[26:27] Speaker 6: be our bell count now. You know, he really became
[26:30] Speaker 6: more of that last year. And uh, but we're you know,
[26:34] Speaker 6: we're gonna hang our hat on him quite a bit.
[26:35] Speaker 6: You know, we're gonna we're gonna do a lot of
[26:37] Speaker 6: things we feel like he does.
[26:38] Speaker 4: Well.
[26:38] Speaker 6: Now I've mentioned this before. He can he can run
[26:41] Speaker 6: everything that we've got. He can run every scheme that
[26:43] Speaker 6: anybody's ever run. You know, he's not just an outside runner.
[26:47] Speaker 6: He's not just a space runner. He can create his
[26:49] Speaker 6: own space in the middle. And some of his biggest
[26:51] Speaker 6: runs have been gap scheme right down the pipe, you know,
[26:54] Speaker 6: where he's had patience and found it and Guy's blocked
[26:56] Speaker 6: it up. Well, so we're going to ask a lot
[26:59] Speaker 6: of him.
[26:59] Speaker 3: So this is the portion of the show.
[27:01] Speaker 1: If you didn't notice it that we're playing a lot
[27:03] Speaker 1: of sound, we'll call it the Sound Garden portion of
[27:07] Speaker 1: the show. My son Walker said it's his favorite part
[27:12] Speaker 1: of the show when we play some sound, and I
[27:14] Speaker 1: know our producer Eric Roberts agrees with that. Do you
[27:17] Speaker 1: think this clip was worth it? And what did you
[27:20] Speaker 1: learn from this clip?
[27:21] Speaker 2: Yes, it was worth it because today is June eighth
[27:25] Speaker 2: and it's that time of year. What did I think
[27:29] Speaker 2: of that? I felt like he was just confirming what
[27:31] Speaker 2: we already saw last year with the way that their
[27:33] Speaker 2: backfield kind of evolved and why they moved on from
[27:35] Speaker 2: David Montgomery when they did. I'm honestly, this is very
[27:39] Speaker 2: like low Hanging Fruit here. I just want to know
[27:41] Speaker 2: what Soundgarden song would fit that clip? Because I'm thinking
[27:44] Speaker 2: like spoon Man, black Hole Sun, like, which one are
[27:46] Speaker 2: we going with here?
[27:47] Speaker 1: I mean I only know a handful, I have to admit,
[27:50] Speaker 1: but black Hole Sun Sneaky High on the played the
[27:55] Speaker 1: most on MTV during my youth rankings. I mean, I
[28:00] Speaker 1: can't remember a song that was played more than black Holes,
[28:02] Speaker 1: and to the point where I started to hate Sound
[28:04] Speaker 1: Garden just because I was just sick of that video
[28:06] Speaker 1: and song.
[28:08] Speaker 2: But a great band, great band and a good quote,
[28:11] Speaker 2: and I.
[28:12] Speaker 1: Bet Dan Campbell is a fan of it. I mean
[28:14] Speaker 1: he still makes that podium look small. I'm still I'm
[28:16] Speaker 1: still more afraid of Dan Campbell than I am of
[28:19] Speaker 1: Ben Johnson. And yes, Jamier Gibbs RB one or RB
[28:22] Speaker 1: two in your fantasy drafts this season.
[28:25] Speaker 3: I think it's pretty obvious.
[28:26] Speaker 1: Let's talk about Trent Williams, who spoke with the media
[28:30] Speaker 1: last week. He is back with the forty nine ers.
[28:33] Speaker 1: He was not excited about the Miles Garrett trade, said
[28:37] Speaker 1: that sucked.
[28:38] Speaker 3: I wasn't looking forward to playing him.
[28:40] Speaker 1: Was joking around but saying, yeah, that's gonna make his
[28:43] Speaker 1: life a little harder. He signed a new contract that
[28:45] Speaker 1: signs it, that gets him extended through the next two
[28:49] Speaker 1: years now and kind of spoke about where he is
[28:52] Speaker 1: at this point of his career.
[28:54] Speaker 4: Got a form of this question a lot.
[28:55] Speaker 8: But having just said what you said about playing the
[28:57] Speaker 8: next two years, did did.
[28:59] Speaker 2: It cross your mind that this would be the last
[29:00] Speaker 2: contract you signed?
[29:01] Speaker 4: Or are you still yeah?
[29:03] Speaker 9: Yeah, so where did you envision this being in or
[29:05] Speaker 9: probably yeah?
[29:07] Speaker 4: What's what's that thought like?
[29:08] Speaker 1: Then?
[29:08] Speaker 6: When you scary scary?
[29:12] Speaker 9: You know, I'm toying in between ideas going to I
[29:15] Speaker 9: can no more and just you know, even while still
[29:19] Speaker 9: got some good product lefts, you know, and not getting
[29:22] Speaker 9: ran out the league.
[29:23] Speaker 1: It's funny to think of even a Trent Williams saying
[29:26] Speaker 1: that it is also funny to think about his reputation,
[29:28] Speaker 1: which was totally unfair when he was in Washington, and
[29:31] Speaker 1: now he's turned into to me, a first ballot Hall
[29:33] Speaker 1: of Famer that we get to see up against Miles
[29:35] Speaker 1: Garrett for a couple more years. And what we've seen
[29:37] Speaker 1: with these guys like a Jason peters Stipe, where if
[29:39] Speaker 1: he's still playing well and after the next two years,
[29:42] Speaker 1: like hey, why not why not have him keep played?
[29:44] Speaker 3: You're you're making eyes. He's thirty seven years old that year.
[29:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, because Trent is also thinking about the way Jason
[29:50] Speaker 2: Peter's career ended, which wasn't great. He took a noticeable
[29:55] Speaker 2: step back, three steps back. By the time he was
[29:57] Speaker 2: finishing his career. He was a great tackle for the
[29:59] Speaker 2: majority of career and his story was great. But you're right,
[30:01] Speaker 2: it's also I think an examination or just a good
[30:03] Speaker 2: example of how being with a bad team can ruin
[30:06] Speaker 2: your reputation and then being with a stable franchise that
[30:09] Speaker 2: has a good place for you can elevate your reputation
[30:12] Speaker 2: that mirrors your play and then gets you the recognition
[30:14] Speaker 2: you deserve. But I agree, And it's funny because I
[30:15] Speaker 2: think he when he talks about getting right out of
[30:17] Speaker 2: the league, I think he's just thinking about oh man,
[30:20] Speaker 2: like he turns thirty eight next month. Oh god, I'm
[30:23] Speaker 2: forty years old. I'm facing like thirty two year old
[30:25] Speaker 2: Miles Garrett just getting toasted. That's not going to be
[30:28] Speaker 2: a good look for me. I understand that definitely.
[30:31] Speaker 1: And he is coming off what I would say was
[30:33] Speaker 1: his worst season in San Francisco, where he had some
[30:37] Speaker 1: ups and downs, which usually you don't see with him.
[30:39] Speaker 1: I still think in the end he was probably a
[30:42] Speaker 1: top five six' eight tackle whatever the number. Is but
[30:46] Speaker 1: it started off. Poor the playoff game was just like not.
[30:49] Speaker 1: Great he wasn't at that totally elite level as. Before
[30:54] Speaker 1: and you, mentioned, yeah playing for a bad franchise In
[30:57] Speaker 1: washington before in The Dan snyder.
[30:59] Speaker 3: ERA i, mean that was the worst. Franchise you.
[31:01] Speaker 1: Know it's like everyone's just bickering and there's contract. Dispeak
[31:04] Speaker 1: they didn't want to play him what he was. Worth
[31:06] Speaker 1: speaking of, That Miles garrett, Trade Denzel ward said On
[31:10] Speaker 1: Your browns at his softball event that he definitely wants
[31:12] Speaker 1: to stay with The, browns and the indications from The
[31:14] Speaker 1: browns are that they want to keep Denziel. Ward no
[31:17] Speaker 1: trade sign On Denzel. Ward that, said if we get
[31:19] Speaker 1: into the middle of the season and The browns are
[31:21] Speaker 1: losing a lot of games and teams start, calling it
[31:23] Speaker 1: wouldn't shock me personally If Denzel ward got. Traded some
[31:26] Speaker 1: more contexts on the trades that went down last. WEEK
[31:28] Speaker 1: i thought it was. Interesting Albert breer said that The,
[31:31] Speaker 1: rams you, know got pretty far along WITH Aj, brown
[31:35] Speaker 1: but they had concerns about his. Knee he has a
[31:38] Speaker 1: degenerative quote unquote knee. Condition that is part of the
[31:42] Speaker 1: reason why The titans traded him in the first, place
[31:44] Speaker 1: according To, breer but he's played.
[31:46] Speaker 3: Well through it.
[31:47] Speaker 1: Clearly also thought it was interesting That brown listed four
[31:51] Speaker 1: teams in THE afc that he would have liked to go.
[31:53] Speaker 1: To those four teams The Buffalo, bills The Kansas City,
[31:56] Speaker 1: chiefs The Los Angeles, chargers and The Patriot it's all
[32:00] Speaker 1: of them have great, quarterbacks and apparently only The bills
[32:05] Speaker 1: showed even the scant amount of. Interest but then they
[32:08] Speaker 1: did THE Dj moore trade, anyways and that just left
[32:10] Speaker 1: The patriots bitting against The. Rams and one of the
[32:13] Speaker 1: interesting parts of briers story was The patriots told The, rams,
[32:19] Speaker 1: look if you can get a first and second godspeed,
[32:21] Speaker 1: this you can trade him somewhere.
[32:23] Speaker 3: Else we're just gonna hang.
[32:24] Speaker 1: Tight and so when The rams deal fell, apart which
[32:27] Speaker 1: sounded like it was more that they couldn't find a
[32:29] Speaker 1: taker For DeVante adams Than brown was just sitting out,
[32:32] Speaker 1: THERE i just threw a lot at, You BUT i
[32:34] Speaker 1: thought it was just interesting context in a lot of,
[32:36] Speaker 1: ways including the fact that if you have a great franchise,
[32:39] Speaker 1: quarterback a guy like Aj brown would be happy to
[32:41] Speaker 1: go to your.
[32:42] Speaker 3: G what a.
[32:43] Speaker 2: Concept great receiver wants to play with great. Quarterback amazing.
[32:47] Speaker 2: Revelatory WHEN i hear degenitive, KNEES i always think about
[32:51] Speaker 2: the NBA's Brandon, roy one of my favorite players of
[32:54] Speaker 2: that generation to played with The, trailblazers and his career
[32:57] Speaker 2: ended too soon because of those knee. Issues AND i
[32:59] Speaker 2: always fear a similar demise for other players in other.
[33:02] Speaker 2: Sports but so far we haven't really seen any signs of.
[33:04] Speaker 2: It it's been more about the dysfunction that he dealt
[33:06] Speaker 2: with with The. Eagles you, know some of it brought
[33:08] Speaker 2: brought about by, himself with leaking information and everything. Else
[33:12] Speaker 2: i'm fine with. IT i think, that you, know you
[33:15] Speaker 2: ride this out and see how far you can take
[33:17] Speaker 2: it for the remainder of his, career because at this, point,
[33:19] Speaker 2: he's you, know already twenty, eight turns twenty nine In.
[33:21] Speaker 2: June it's not like he's got a ton of prime
[33:23] Speaker 2: years left ahead of, him so it works. Out it's
[33:26] Speaker 2: just something to, MONITOR i, think as he makes the
[33:28] Speaker 2: transition to become A. Patriot it's funny that The chiefs were,
[33:30] Speaker 2: listed not because you, know it's it's a, surprise but
[33:33] Speaker 2: just because we sat back and we're, like could The
[33:35] Speaker 2: chiefs be? Involved and apparently sounds like they.
[33:38] Speaker 1: Weren't, yeah they didn't according to the, reporting make any
[33:42] Speaker 1: interest known About. BRIER i, MEAN i love these like
[33:47] Speaker 1: late later like reporting on these, contracts and it'll be.
[33:50] Speaker 3: Interesting you.
[33:50] Speaker 1: Know brown did show a little bit of slowness last,
[33:53] Speaker 1: year missed sometimes because of the knee.
[33:55] Speaker 3: Injury so that's the big risk.
[33:56] Speaker 1: That on the other, hand he sounds Like Randy moss
[33:59] Speaker 1: sounds when he got to The patriots at an older,
[34:01] Speaker 1: age you, know back in two thousand and. SEVEN i
[34:04] Speaker 1: don't think he's gonna produce like, that BUT i think
[34:06] Speaker 1: he could have a great honeymoon. Year last item In
[34:10] Speaker 1: soundgarden is From New york The giants And Odell. Beckham
[34:15] Speaker 1: he is back With New, york And i've seen a
[34:18] Speaker 1: lot of the reporters being, like why would they sign
[34:20] Speaker 1: him when he's not you, know and then you also
[34:23] Speaker 1: Signed juju And braxton, various all these guys like they're
[34:27] Speaker 1: on minimum, contracts And odell knows where he stands right
[34:31] Speaker 1: now in the football pecking.
[34:32] Speaker 4: ORDER i like it this. WAY i feel like.
[34:36] Speaker 8: It's gonna bring it's gonna elevate, me it's gonna bring
[34:38] Speaker 8: me up to have to earn.
[34:40] Speaker 4: It you.
[34:41] Speaker 8: Know coach AND i talked about. THAT i think that
[34:43] Speaker 8: was one of his. Fears he was, LIKE i love
[34:44] Speaker 8: you so much AND i got so much respect for,
[34:46] Speaker 8: You LIKE i don't want to bring you here and
[34:48] Speaker 8: then have to cut you or. Whatever And i'm, like,
[34:51] Speaker 8: Listen i'm going out on my sword either way it.
[34:53] Speaker 8: Goes so if that's what you got to, do when
[34:56] Speaker 8: you see That i'm not best or, fit then you
[34:59] Speaker 8: know about all.
[35:00] Speaker 4: Means i'm good with, it AND i could live with.
[35:01] Speaker 8: IT i can't live with sitting at home like not
[35:06] Speaker 8: doing not doing. It you, KNOW i just couldn't do.
[35:09] Speaker 3: It good that he's. Realistic do you think that he
[35:11] Speaker 3: makes The giants?
[35:12] Speaker 9: Roster.
[35:13] Speaker 2: Hmmm they have a lot of options by making these.
[35:16] Speaker 2: Additions they have a ton of, options like their top
[35:18] Speaker 2: three of Neighbors slayton And. Mooney but then you continue
[35:20] Speaker 2: to go down the, list you Get Malachai, Fields Calvin
[35:22] Speaker 2: austin comes. OVER i think he'll be an ideal fit
[35:24] Speaker 2: in this offense as. Well then you get down to
[35:26] Speaker 2: Where Jalen hyatt, is who is a youngster that they're
[35:29] Speaker 2: not going to move on. From and then you get
[35:30] Speaker 2: To odell And juju And Braxton, Barrius like there's just
[35:33] Speaker 2: not enough seats at the table for all of these.
[35:35] Speaker 2: Guys AND i don't know what type of situation he's
[35:38] Speaker 2: in physically at this, point because he's dealt with so
[35:40] Speaker 2: much over the last few years health, Wise but if
[35:42] Speaker 2: he can come anything close to even where he, was
[35:45] Speaker 2: IF i would, say like maybe end of, rams LIKE
[35:48] Speaker 2: i wouldn't go further back than, that BUT i think
[35:50] Speaker 2: he's got a. Shot more than. Anything it really warms
[35:54] Speaker 2: my heart if somebody who got to know him when
[35:56] Speaker 2: he was In cleveland to see the Mature odell, who,
[35:58] Speaker 2: like you, know he's not worried about the fame and
[36:00] Speaker 2: how this might be perceived this way or that way
[36:02] Speaker 2: or the. Other like he's just speaking honestly and he's, like, look,
[36:05] Speaker 2: man this is probably my last, shot AND i still
[36:07] Speaker 2: want to play, football so however it, goes however it,
[36:10] Speaker 2: GOES i love. THAT i love that for a guy
[36:12] Speaker 2: who has spent so much of his career in a
[36:14] Speaker 2: spotlight that he didn't necessarily ever really want for him
[36:17] Speaker 2: to go out at LEAST i think that's kind of
[36:18] Speaker 2: on his own terms at this. Point good for.
[36:20] Speaker 1: Him you figure neighbors might not be ready for the
[36:24] Speaker 1: start of the. Season whether he starts on pup or
[36:26] Speaker 1: pup blist something you know or ir maybe that opens
[36:31] Speaker 1: up a. Spot, slayton you would think is close to a,
[36:35] Speaker 1: lock but you never. Know they might look to trade it.
[36:37] Speaker 1: Him mooney is a, Lock fields is a. Lock after,
[36:41] Speaker 1: that it's pretty wide. Open if everyone's. Healthy It's odell
[36:45] Speaker 1: And Calvin austen And Isaiah hodgens And. JUJU i don't
[36:48] Speaker 1: Think Jalen hyatts necessarily making this, team so they're all
[36:51] Speaker 1: battling for one or two. Spots we're talking about a
[36:53] Speaker 1: guy who will Be it would be a great, story
[36:55] Speaker 1: but is, probably you, know a third or fourth receiver at.
[36:58] Speaker 1: Best if everything goes well and he seems to understand,
[37:01] Speaker 1: that let's do just a couple of. NUGGETS i want
[37:04] Speaker 1: to MENTION Aj, barner the Great Seahawks. Titan i'm calling him.
[37:08] Speaker 1: Great i'm putting him in the top. Ten is coming
[37:10] Speaker 1: out two surgeries from last, offseason but he is expected
[37:13] Speaker 1: to be ready for training, camp so we didn't know
[37:15] Speaker 1: that he had multiple.
[37:17] Speaker 3: Surgeries it's a little.
[37:18] Speaker 1: Concerning Deron, bland who had a foot, surgery And Donovan
[37:22] Speaker 1: azeraku of The, cowboys who had a hit. Problem both
[37:27] Speaker 1: say they're going to be ready for the start of
[37:29] Speaker 1: camp full. Go Russell wilson has. Retired we think he
[37:36] Speaker 1: released a video that said goodbye to. FOOTBALL i feel
[37:39] Speaker 1: like there's a ten percent chance some team will come
[37:42] Speaker 1: calling in the middle of the season and he could
[37:44] Speaker 1: be back as a. Backup it didn't exactly say, retire
[37:46] Speaker 1: but he just he SAID i love you, football BUT
[37:50] Speaker 1: i did want to kind of go over His hall
[37:52] Speaker 1: Of fame.
[37:52] Speaker 3: CASE i feel like this is as good a time
[37:54] Speaker 3: as any.
[37:55] Speaker 1: You, have like a gut reaction of Where russ just
[38:00] Speaker 1: an incredible, career an incredible. PLAYER i don't want him
[38:05] Speaker 1: falling off a cliff From denver onward to be what
[38:09] Speaker 1: we remember.
[38:10] Speaker 3: Because he had ten seasons In.
[38:12] Speaker 1: Seattle that's his career right, there and ten seasons to
[38:14] Speaker 1: me is enough to make A hall Of fame case,
[38:17] Speaker 1: plenty AND i think he has. One BUT i Guess
[38:21] Speaker 1: i'm curious of where you see him in kind of
[38:23] Speaker 1: the big picture career arc pecking.
[38:26] Speaker 2: Order ten Time pro bowler obviously a one Time Super bowl,
[38:30] Speaker 2: champion got there in back to back years with The,
[38:32] Speaker 2: seahawks and while if they would have handled the ball To,
[38:35] Speaker 2: marshawn he could be a two Time Super bowl. Champion but,
[38:37] Speaker 2: well we won't spend time rehashing. That there were multiple
[38:40] Speaker 2: seasons when he was at his peak where he was
[38:42] Speaker 2: a LEGITIMATE mvp candidate for at least a portion of that.
[38:46] Speaker 2: Campaign AND i WHEN i think about if we could
[38:50] Speaker 2: strip out The denver experience the last four years from his,
[38:53] Speaker 2: career if he ended after the twenty twenty one season In,
[38:56] Speaker 2: seattle he's going to The hall Of. Fame so but
[38:59] Speaker 2: that's all that should.
[38:59] Speaker 3: MEANT i don't think you should ever.
[39:01] Speaker 2: Hear her saying, like where are you at your? Peak
[39:02] Speaker 2: when he was at his, peak he was a bona fide,
[39:04] Speaker 2: superstar one of the best quarterbacks in THE nfl for
[39:07] Speaker 2: five six. Years so, okay, yeah he gets in. Eventually
[39:09] Speaker 2: he's not first, ballot BUT i think he gets in.
[39:11] Speaker 2: Eventually so IF.
[39:12] Speaker 1: I was a, VOTER i would not hold the end
[39:14] Speaker 1: of the year the latter years against. Him now for
[39:17] Speaker 1: other people like A Matt ryan Or Matthew, stafford the
[39:20] Speaker 1: fact that they had cumulative great years in years, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen.
[39:26] Speaker 1: Whatever it is obviously works in their favor if you're
[39:29] Speaker 1: comparing them apples to apples Versus Russell. Wilson so it
[39:33] Speaker 1: does hurt him in that way when you're comparing into other,
[39:35] Speaker 1: quarterbacks and that is how this goes. Sometimes BUT i
[39:37] Speaker 1: think ten years is long enough to potentially have A
[39:39] Speaker 1: hall Of fame.
[39:39] Speaker 3: Career now was? It he had an incredible rookie.
[39:43] Speaker 1: SEASON i went back and looked at WHAT i wrote
[39:45] Speaker 1: at the time BECAUSE i watched every single play FOR
[39:48] Speaker 1: qb index basically of his entire, prime including his rookie
[39:50] Speaker 1: season that was the year we. Started he would have
[39:53] Speaker 1: Won rookie of The year almost every SEASON i wrote
[39:56] Speaker 1: at the. Time he would have won it every year,
[39:58] Speaker 1: since like The Adrian peterson two thousand and seven. Year
[40:02] Speaker 1: he just happened to be in a year WITH rg
[40:03] Speaker 1: three And Andrew. Luck but like you PUT rg, three
[40:06] Speaker 1: Like Russell wilson finished that season awesome and then into the.
[40:09] Speaker 1: Playoffs so incredible rookie. Year here is his end of
[40:13] Speaker 1: the SEASON Qb index. Ranks okay. Shook this is the
[40:17] Speaker 1: end of the regular, Season so you're not giving him
[40:19] Speaker 1: extra points for, postseason which you would obviously With hall Of.
[40:21] Speaker 3: Fame maybe the most.
[40:24] Speaker 1: Consistent quarterback other than Like breeze of in terms of
[40:27] Speaker 1: where he was ranked In brady maybe in the in
[40:32] Speaker 1: the decade, sixth, eighth, fourth, ninth, fifth, sixth, third, sixth
[40:41] Speaker 1: and then his final season In, seattle we had him.
[40:44] Speaker 1: Twelfth he gets the boot and then it totally falls
[40:48] Speaker 1: off a. Cliff that is. Awesome it is really hard
[40:52] Speaker 1: to be a top six ish, quarterback you, know anywhere
[40:55] Speaker 1: from three to eight or so in the consistency is,
[40:58] Speaker 1: Awesome but to me that's like borderline at. Best but
[41:02] Speaker 1: the postseason, stuff the rookie, stuff what he meant for the,
[41:05] Speaker 1: game you, know gives him a little extra. Juice IF
[41:08] Speaker 1: i am comparing, GUYS i put him Behind rivers for,
[41:10] Speaker 1: Sure BUT i THINK i would put him ahead Of
[41:13] Speaker 1: Matt ryan And Eli. Manning in, FACT i KNOW i
[41:15] Speaker 1: would BECAUSE i think that sustained peak was better by
[41:20] Speaker 1: a good margin than their sustained.
[41:23] Speaker 2: Peak, YEAH i agree with, That and, sometimes even like
[41:26] Speaker 2: the most simplistic, APPROACH i think, about like how DID
[41:30] Speaker 2: i regard them when they were at their? Best and
[41:32] Speaker 2: then how long was their? Best and he was held
[41:35] Speaker 2: in higher regard Than eli And Matt ryan, Were Like
[41:38] Speaker 2: Matt ryan had THAT mvp season with The falcons that
[41:40] Speaker 2: we super and everything question annually.
[41:42] Speaker 3: People are funny About Matt.
[41:43] Speaker 1: Ryan, NOW i Thought Matt ryan was great at the,
[41:45] Speaker 1: time and WHEN i thought he was great and that
[41:48] Speaker 1: he was, UNDERRATED i was always thinking he was like
[41:50] Speaker 1: the seventh best quarterback in the, League like he wasn't
[41:52] Speaker 1: Quite Russell wilson at his peak.
[41:53] Speaker 2: Exactly so, Yeah i'm with you on. THAT i like
[41:56] Speaker 2: that placement, there AND i think that THOSE Qb index
[41:58] Speaker 2: final placements really kind of speak to what we often,
[42:01] Speaker 2: miss which is that like third In Offensive rookie of The,
[42:05] Speaker 2: year fourth And Offensive player of The, year third and
[42:06] Speaker 2: offensive player, there fourth And offensive player. Year that's like
[42:08] Speaker 2: in a seven year, span, Right like we always point
[42:11] Speaker 2: to that and it's, like, well how Many all pros
[42:13] Speaker 2: did he? Make how many times was he a finalist
[42:15] Speaker 2: For Offensive player of The? Year how about where was
[42:16] Speaker 2: he every year at the end of THE Qb. Index
[42:18] Speaker 2: it's a good good, METRICS i.
[42:19] Speaker 1: Think, so because quarterbacks you get extra like a top
[42:23] Speaker 1: if that was your position ranking at tight, End, yeah
[42:26] Speaker 1: you're not making The hall Of. Fame but it's a
[42:28] Speaker 1: little different when you're the most important. Position if we're
[42:31] Speaker 1: saying he's a top five quarterback for the twenty, tens
[42:35] Speaker 1: you Have rogers in there And breeze In, manning and you,
[42:38] Speaker 1: know it gets. Complicated LIKE i think that it's on the.
[42:43] Speaker 1: BORDER i actually don't have like a final, Say i'd
[42:45] Speaker 1: have to see who he's up.
[42:46] Speaker 3: Against he gets.
[42:47] Speaker 1: Eventually he is sort of the definition to, me a
[42:50] Speaker 1: borderline where he probably does get in after seven to ten,
[42:54] Speaker 1: years depending on like who he's. Against BUT i definitely
[42:57] Speaker 1: have him ahead Of, RIVERS i mean ahead Of ryan
[43:00] Speaker 1: And eli and definitely Behind. Rivers but that's my own,
[43:03] Speaker 1: personal you, know. EVALUATION i know some people. Disagree let's
[43:07] Speaker 1: wrap up with Your madden takeaways before we get out of.
[43:11] Speaker 1: Here what is it that you? Do you go and
[43:13] Speaker 1: you guys just all Play madden together in a.
[43:15] Speaker 2: Room so in the, past it would be it's the
[43:18] Speaker 2: preview event and we would you sit through a presentation
[43:20] Speaker 2: three four hours long where they would you, know they
[43:22] Speaker 2: broke it up into two days in the, past where
[43:23] Speaker 2: it would be day one would be madd and they
[43:25] Speaker 2: would tell us about all the new features and everything
[43:26] Speaker 2: coming to the, game and then we get our hands
[43:27] Speaker 2: on it for like three four. Hours i'd sit down
[43:29] Speaker 2: with the, developers talk to them about the, game do an,
[43:31] Speaker 2: interview write a story about, it and we'd do the
[43:32] Speaker 2: same thing for college. Football, well this year they decided
[43:34] Speaker 2: to put it all into one big primetime nighttime event
[43:37] Speaker 2: that's live streamed across the world because they're very excited
[43:40] Speaker 2: about what they're producing on the virtual football field across both.
[43:44] Speaker 2: Games But madden was especially, important it felt this year
[43:47] Speaker 2: because of where it, was which Was, chicago home of
[43:50] Speaker 2: cover Athlete Caleb. Williams it was just dialed up a.
[43:53] Speaker 2: Lot there were more people, there there were more cameras,
[43:55] Speaker 2: there the production value which was much, higher and let
[43:59] Speaker 2: me tell, you it was a blast what they've done
[44:02] Speaker 2: in creating this. Game and it's really a multi year
[44:05] Speaker 2: initiative where they try to fix one element of football
[44:07] Speaker 2: and the other. One tackling was one, year blocking was another,
[44:09] Speaker 2: year and they iterate on a year by. Year they
[44:11] Speaker 2: have tried to bring the virtual football video games closer
[44:14] Speaker 2: to real life football at a level that allows it
[44:17] Speaker 2: to become a teaching tool and also an experimentation tool
[44:20] Speaker 2: and it's taken multiple years to get to that. Point
[44:22] Speaker 2: but in speaking with the people who are so dedicated
[44:24] Speaker 2: to doing, THIS i think about the gameplay Lead SCOTT.
[44:27] Speaker 2: O gallagher like he's an X is And o's, guy
[44:30] Speaker 2: and we'll stand there and we'll just be chatting about
[44:32] Speaker 2: the intricacies of the game and how he's bringing that
[44:35] Speaker 2: to the football field in both college and THE. Nfl
[44:37] Speaker 2: it's to the point now where we're getting plaster logic
[44:40] Speaker 2: and defensive. Coverage and you know what plaster. Is you'll
[44:42] Speaker 2: Hear Charles davis talk about it on a RANDOM nfl
[44:44] Speaker 2: broadcast on A sunday ON cbs that quarterback breaks the.
[44:47] Speaker 2: Pocket what's the first thing defensive backs are. Doing they're
[44:49] Speaker 2: plaster into the nearest, guy find a, guy stick to.
[44:52] Speaker 2: Them that's now in the. Game there are other coverage,
[44:54] Speaker 2: improvements like this thing they call look for work where
[44:56] Speaker 2: you're playing in his own coverage and there's nobody, there
[44:58] Speaker 2: but you're looking for the nearest, defender trying to eliminate
[45:01] Speaker 2: the soft. Spots they're making football more, realistic and that's
[45:04] Speaker 2: what's excites me about the game is that If madden
[45:08] Speaker 2: and college football can become a teaching. Tool it can
[45:10] Speaker 2: onboard the next generation of football fans and expand you,
[45:13] Speaker 2: know the audience for football beyond what it already. IS
[45:16] Speaker 2: i MEAN i think about, LIKE i don't know anything about,
[45:18] Speaker 2: soccer BUT i PLAY FIFA, eafc and NOW i know
[45:20] Speaker 2: a little bit about. Soccer if you can do the
[45:22] Speaker 2: same thing with, football the fan base only grows and
[45:24] Speaker 2: it becomes a better experience for, everybody especially somebody like,
[45:26] Speaker 2: me because you, KNOW i run those college football On
[45:28] Speaker 2: madden leagues AND i hate having to separate my brain
[45:31] Speaker 2: between real football logic and video game football. Logic so
[45:34] Speaker 2: they're trying to close that, gap AND i think they're
[45:36] Speaker 2: getting a lot. Closer and it was fun to talk
[45:37] Speaker 2: with those. People you get my hands on the game
[45:39] Speaker 2: and test it out as.
[45:40] Speaker 1: Well, yeah it's a great way to learn next as
[45:43] Speaker 1: and o's for, kids but for adults.
[45:47] Speaker 3: Too it really is next.
[45:49] Speaker 1: LEVEL i know they added some, features you know now
[45:51] Speaker 1: when you're in Like superstar, mode like you could do
[45:54] Speaker 1: tight ends or a safety was there? Anything was there
[45:56] Speaker 1: anything flashy? Though that caught your eye for The madden
[46:00] Speaker 1: people out, THERE.
[46:01] Speaker 2: I mean flashy both defense is, back like like it's
[46:05] Speaker 2: no longer going to be complete shootouts and those who like,
[46:07] Speaker 2: to you, know get in to real x's and o's
[46:09] Speaker 2: and be able to counter. Defensively it's definitely back in
[46:11] Speaker 2: a number of different. Ways The superstar experience is fun
[46:14] Speaker 2: as a tight end, because as you, know former blocker,
[46:17] Speaker 2: MYSELF i love the idea of controlling a tight, end pancaking.
[46:21] Speaker 2: Somebody for, example playing with The jets clearing a lane
[46:24] Speaker 2: For Brise hall for a touchdown and then also running
[46:26] Speaker 2: a corner rout in the red zone and catching the
[46:28] Speaker 2: game winning. Touchdown that's a lot of fun. Too and
[46:30] Speaker 2: that's something that used to be In madden back in like.
[46:32] Speaker 2: Seven that's back. Now WHO i love laying.
[46:34] Speaker 1: Somebody i'm gonna make my Own Darnel, washington you, Know,
