[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we've got a perfect relative
[0:08] Speaker 1: athletics score. I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm in my garage back
[0:12] Speaker 1: in Los Angeles, in front of a live studio audience
[0:15] Speaker 1: of one my son across the country, free and fresh
[0:20] Speaker 1: from Lucas Oil Stadium. It is Nick Shook, back in
[0:24] Speaker 1: his hotel room at the end of a long day
[0:27] Speaker 1: watching prospects. I am happy to see you again, Nick.
[0:31] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know, it's funny. I think it's the
[0:33] Speaker 2: last three or four years we both go to the combine.
[0:36] Speaker 2: We fail to see each other at the combine like
[0:38] Speaker 2: two ships passing in the night. So it is good,
[0:41] Speaker 2: indeed to see you again as well.
[0:42] Speaker 1: And look, the NFL Daily fans, the Shook ones out
[0:46] Speaker 1: there have been saying where's Nick. Last time we talked
[0:49] Speaker 1: to him was on the Super Bowl show, and so
[0:51] Speaker 1: only big time shows for Nick. We're going to go
[0:53] Speaker 1: through the front seven and the defense worked out on
[0:57] Speaker 1: Thursday in Indianapolis, the defensive lineman, the edge players, of course,
[1:02] Speaker 1: the linebackers. Great day for a lot of them, especially
[1:06] Speaker 1: those linebackers. Will also do a little bit of news.
[1:09] Speaker 1: We had a trade. It's already starting to happen, some
[1:12] Speaker 1: other releases, some other little bits and bobs, and then
[1:15] Speaker 1: at the end of the show, we're going to listen
[1:16] Speaker 1: to a couple of interviews I did before I left
[1:19] Speaker 1: town with the Panthers brain trust. Definitely a rising team
[1:23] Speaker 1: until we talked to GM Dan Morgan and the coach
[1:26] Speaker 1: Dave Canalis. But just give me a little big picture
[1:30] Speaker 1: of your overall day before we start breaking down the
[1:33] Speaker 1: different positions. You're in the stadium watching it. How did
[1:37] Speaker 1: you think day one went here at the twenty six combine.
[1:40] Speaker 2: I mean, you know, the overall day, it always begins
[1:43] Speaker 2: with with your player interviews. And I listened to Caleb
[1:46] Speaker 2: Downs so we'll be working out tomorrow, talk about how
[1:49] Speaker 2: he believes that when he steps in the field, he
[1:52] Speaker 2: knows he's the best player. If he told if you
[1:54] Speaker 2: claimed that he thought somebody else was, it would be
[1:56] Speaker 2: a lie, is what he said. And then he continued
[1:58] Speaker 2: with the workouts and we had some really really intriguing
[2:02] Speaker 2: guys in the defensive line that I'm very curious to
[2:05] Speaker 2: see where they'll all fall in the draft. You didn't
[2:08] Speaker 2: have a couple of guys that were big names participating
[2:10] Speaker 2: with the edge rushers you had Sunny Styles blow up
[2:13] Speaker 2: the combine and the deepest linebacker like class that I
[2:17] Speaker 2: believe I've seen in my basically a decade covering this combine.
[2:20] Speaker 3: I think this is the deepest group yet.
[2:22] Speaker 1: And I love that you mentioned Caleb down to what
[2:24] Speaker 1: we'll hear from tomorrow. We'll watch Jeremiah Love, the running
[2:28] Speaker 1: back from Notre Dame later in the week. And it
[2:30] Speaker 1: is really interesting because I think if you go around
[2:32] Speaker 1: and just ask people in Indianapolis, who's the best player
[2:36] Speaker 1: in the draft, kind of take away the position. So
[2:39] Speaker 1: you know, Mendoza's Fernando Mendoz is going to be the
[2:41] Speaker 1: number one pick. Who's just the best player in the draft.
[2:44] Speaker 1: There's a lot of different players who could you could
[2:47] Speaker 1: make the case for in maybe Sunny Styles. The Ohio
[2:50] Speaker 1: State linebacker put himself in that mix with a huge
[2:53] Speaker 1: combine performance. I think he saw three of them today.
[2:56] Speaker 1: We just mentioned two more of them, and it's just
[2:59] Speaker 1: one of those wide open drafts. So let's start there.
[3:01] Speaker 1: Sunny Styles blew up the combine and and look, his
[3:05] Speaker 1: teammate Rvel Reese was not far behind. These are two
[3:08] Speaker 1: guys that were already in the top five of a
[3:11] Speaker 1: lot of people's boards, even if they weren't. In mock drafts.
[3:15] Speaker 1: Daniel Jeremiah had them both in his top five rvel
[3:18] Speaker 1: Reese number two overall. But Styles was an absolute tank
[3:23] Speaker 1: just in the measurements. If you're someone that was online
[3:26] Speaker 1: all day, it was just watching this dude's case build
[3:29] Speaker 1: and build throughout the day because his just body is
[3:32] Speaker 1: an absolute tank. And then he performed. I don't think
[3:36] Speaker 1: it's exaggerating, like one of the best linebackers slash, just
[3:40] Speaker 1: pure player performances maybe we've ever seen at the combine.
[3:43] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[3:43] Speaker 2: Absolutely, It's funny because you're right, it did start with
[3:45] Speaker 2: the measurements. Then it started with the testing that happens
[3:47] Speaker 2: on the side, and I remember hearing like an audible
[3:50] Speaker 2: pop when he hit his vertical jumps as they're you know,
[3:53] Speaker 2: doing their testing before the linebackers come out and do
[3:55] Speaker 2: their job, and I'm thinking, oh, somebody just jumped, you know,
[3:57] Speaker 2: put a big number up. And then we have the
[4:00] Speaker 2: broadcast playing in the suite. Moments later they cut to it.
[4:03] Speaker 2: It's Sunny Styles, and I'm thinking, all right, this is
[4:05] Speaker 2: the athletic player that I've known as an Ohio State fan.
[4:08] Speaker 2: Was always there, the guy that was good enough to
[4:09] Speaker 2: earn the block O jersey aka Number zero with Ohio
[4:13] Speaker 2: State this past season, finally kind of showing off his
[4:16] Speaker 2: athleticism to the rest of the pro football world. And
[4:19] Speaker 2: then he goes out and he runs the fastest forty
[4:22] Speaker 2: if any guy in the linebacker group, which also includes
[4:24] Speaker 2: rvel Reeves as the only edge rusher in that group,
[4:27] Speaker 2: and he's the heaviest of all the linebackers, did it
[4:30] Speaker 2: at the highest weight, put the fastest forty time down,
[4:32] Speaker 2: cementing the triple crown with the broad jump eleven foot
[4:35] Speaker 2: two inch broad jump, the crazy vertical jump, the forty time,
[4:40] Speaker 2: and then he crushes all the drills.
[4:42] Speaker 3: He just dominated the combine.
[4:43] Speaker 2: It's one of those performances that we're going to look
[4:45] Speaker 2: back on years from now and that's going to be
[4:47] Speaker 2: the new standard that all these other guys are going
[4:50] Speaker 2: to aspire to try to reach.
[4:52] Speaker 1: So they still have the agility of drills. I guess
[4:54] Speaker 1: they separated those by days. So technically the route the
[4:59] Speaker 1: testing is in die and the relative athletics score which
[5:02] Speaker 1: is put together isn't exactly complete, but right now he
[5:06] Speaker 1: would be ranked first out of thirty two hundred and
[5:09] Speaker 1: fifteen linebackers.
[5:11] Speaker 2: When the NFL sat again to set it again, see
[5:12] Speaker 2: it again, thirty two hundred and fifteen three thou two
[5:17] Speaker 2: hundred and fifteen linebackers.
[5:18] Speaker 1: Well, literally the best vertical leap ever, I think from
[5:22] Speaker 1: the position the fourth best I think in terms of
[5:26] Speaker 1: the broad jump. I might be mixing up those two,
[5:28] Speaker 1: but either way, they were right there. Like the comps
[5:30] Speaker 1: in terms of his heightweight speed were DK Metcalf, Nick
[5:35] Speaker 1: M and Worry. And to do that as a linebacker
[5:38] Speaker 1: six foot four, two hundred and forty four pounds, like
[5:41] Speaker 1: huge arms, wingspan at like bigger than almost anyone else,
[5:45] Speaker 1: and a guy that the tape backs it up that
[5:48] Speaker 1: it's just these two different styles. Now, I think among
[5:52] Speaker 1: maybe people who aren't, you know, among the average Draftnick
[5:56] Speaker 1: he was ranked a little lower, like he's twelfth on
[5:59] Speaker 1: the consensus, But for instance, DJ had him fifth, and
[6:04] Speaker 1: I think the league maybe already viewed him higher. And
[6:06] Speaker 1: I think this crazy day that he had Jeremiah said
[6:12] Speaker 1: it on the broadcast, is now going to maybe put
[6:14] Speaker 1: him at least in that discussion where you're thinking about
[6:17] Speaker 1: is this guy a top five pick? Is five even
[6:20] Speaker 1: gonna be like the floor for him if you think
[6:22] Speaker 1: about the Giants who would need him, and could the
[6:25] Speaker 1: Jets be thinking, hmm, are we now deciding between Sonny Styles,
[6:29] Speaker 1: Rvel Reeves, David Bailey like among those three guys for
[6:33] Speaker 1: the number two overall pick.
[6:34] Speaker 2: It's a good problem to have, and I think it
[6:37] Speaker 2: kind of gives you a good example of what can
[6:39] Speaker 2: happen to a player's reputation from their junior year to
[6:43] Speaker 2: their senior year or whatever, their their penultimate year to
[6:45] Speaker 2: their final year in college if they are lined up
[6:48] Speaker 2: next to somebody who absolutely blossoms in the following year.
[6:51] Speaker 3: Because that's what's happened to Sony Styles.
[6:53] Speaker 2: He's always been this linebacker, like, for example, he was
[6:56] Speaker 2: always my dad's favorite linebacker at Ohio State. He loves
[7:00] Speaker 2: was how he said his name right. But Arvilla Reese
[7:02] Speaker 2: explodes this year and becomes this dominant player and ends
[7:05] Speaker 2: up being the more prominent defender in this nation's best defense,
[7:09] Speaker 2: this Ohio State defense that had ballers at every level.
[7:12] Speaker 2: At Caleb Downs back there, you had Rees, and you
[7:13] Speaker 2: had Styles, you had McDonald at the defensive line. That
[7:16] Speaker 2: they had guys at every level, And so people kind
[7:19] Speaker 2: of forgot about styles. Even the draftnicks kind of forgot
[7:21] Speaker 2: about styles because when you thought about that defense, you
[7:24] Speaker 2: thought about Reese and his production, and again it just
[7:26] Speaker 2: overshadowed what he did. But this is how you can
[7:28] Speaker 2: rescue your draft stock by coming out here and being
[7:31] Speaker 2: an athletic freak on the biggest stage in the pre
[7:34] Speaker 2: draft process and taking back your narrative and shooting back
[7:38] Speaker 2: up the draft board. And it opens up this debate
[7:40] Speaker 2: that's like threefold, which is you go between Reese and Bailey.
[7:43] Speaker 2: It's kind of like the Aiden Hutchinson versus Trayvon Walker
[7:46] Speaker 2: debate of a few years ago. Which one do you
[7:48] Speaker 2: take at number one or versus number two, the more
[7:51] Speaker 2: polished producer who ended up being Hutchinson or the guy
[7:53] Speaker 2: with the higher upside who was Walker. That's essentially what
[7:56] Speaker 2: people view Reese as well. And I can throw Styles
[7:58] Speaker 2: into the mix, not as a one to one comparison,
[8:01] Speaker 2: but also another candidate for these teams like the Jets,
[8:03] Speaker 2: who have a lot to determine.
[8:05] Speaker 3: And it's a good problem to have if.
[8:06] Speaker 4: You're the Jets.
[8:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, And I want to focus on the combine tonight
[8:09] Speaker 1: because we're going to dive into these players deeper throughout
[8:11] Speaker 1: the process. But it is funny to me because I
[8:13] Speaker 1: saw someone write about sunny styles. This might be one
[8:18] Speaker 1: of the best like inside linebacker prospects we've seen in
[8:22] Speaker 1: a long time. And I'm thinking, what about RL Reese
[8:27] Speaker 1: because sees him as an edge and at least the
[8:34] Speaker 1: guy who split his time pretty equally at edge and
[8:37] Speaker 1: off ball linebacker. But he goes out tonight and he
[8:40] Speaker 1: runs a four to four six. The official times actually
[8:42] Speaker 1: were the exact same. He is an absolute tank. During
[8:46] Speaker 1: both of the position drills, they looked incredible. Their ten
[8:48] Speaker 1: yards splits were incredible, and there are there's reasonable minds
[8:52] Speaker 1: can disagree, but you know, we we're going to talk
[8:54] Speaker 1: to Ali Connelly on the show throughout the draft process,
[8:57] Speaker 1: and he really thinks recently is going to be better
[9:00] Speaker 1: as an off ball linebacker. He thinks he's he's a
[9:03] Speaker 1: linebacker guy, and he thinks Reese is the best linebacker
[9:06] Speaker 1: prospect potentially since Luke Keigley. And so that's two guys
[9:09] Speaker 1: on one team. You're in the building before we move
[9:12] Speaker 1: on from these two kind of what what did you
[9:14] Speaker 1: see out of their position drills?
[9:16] Speaker 2: In Ree specifically, it's so funny that you mentioned that,
[9:19] Speaker 2: because I was going through this in my head as
[9:21] Speaker 2: we're watching all of this happen and listened to DJ
[9:22] Speaker 2: on the broadcast talk about how he sees Reese who's gonna,
[9:25] Speaker 2: you know, his but his bread's gonna be buttered at
[9:27] Speaker 2: edge in the NFL, and I'm thinking, Okay, I get that,
[9:30] Speaker 2: I understand that, But that's actually the biggest question mark
[9:33] Speaker 2: on his resume as of now is how you know
[9:35] Speaker 2: developed of a pass rusher?
[9:36] Speaker 3: Are you?
[9:37] Speaker 2: He was a very good edgesetter when he played up
[9:39] Speaker 2: on the ball at Ohio State, but he was a
[9:41] Speaker 2: really dynamic linebacker off the ball no matter who they played,
[9:44] Speaker 2: whether it was Texas in their first game of the season,
[9:46] Speaker 2: Michigan in their last game of this regular season, he
[9:49] Speaker 2: was always the guys making plays from the second level,
[9:51] Speaker 2: shooting the run gaps, doing whatever was necessary to really
[9:54] Speaker 2: make a huge difference. No matter what game you put on,
[9:56] Speaker 2: he was always there as their best defensive player. And
[10:00] Speaker 2: I think that it would kind of sell him short
[10:02] Speaker 2: to just force him into the edge rusher role when
[10:05] Speaker 2: we've seen significant amounts of tape at least over one
[10:08] Speaker 2: season in which he can thrive at that position and
[10:10] Speaker 2: was a difference making player on the best defense in
[10:13] Speaker 2: college football. And the comparison I came to in my
[10:16] Speaker 2: head was kind of the arc of Micah Parsons, because
[10:20] Speaker 2: when Parsons came out of Penn State, he did a
[10:22] Speaker 2: little bit of both as well. And when he started
[10:24] Speaker 2: with the Cowboys, he was off ball as much as
[10:26] Speaker 2: he was on ball, and he was a sideline to the
[10:27] Speaker 2: sideline player, and eventually he was kind of forced into
[10:30] Speaker 2: the edge rushing role. Now, of course, you can do
[10:32] Speaker 2: what the Packers did with him this year, which is
[10:34] Speaker 2: line him up in the a gap from time to
[10:35] Speaker 2: time to show you some weird pressure looking freak out
[10:37] Speaker 2: the offensive lineman and produce pressures.
[10:40] Speaker 3: And you could do that with Reese too.
[10:41] Speaker 2: I just think that if you're going to maximize his
[10:43] Speaker 2: talent pinning him into the sand or into the edge
[10:46] Speaker 2: rushing position and just asking him to hunt the quarterback,
[10:49] Speaker 2: I think you're selling yourself short on what you could
[10:51] Speaker 2: potentially get, especially the guy who's going to get drafted
[10:53] Speaker 2: as highly as he's going to be.
[10:55] Speaker 1: Right, I think Parsons it became clear at the that
[11:00] Speaker 1: he was just better. He was better as an addresser.
[11:04] Speaker 1: I think I am excited to go through the tape more.
[11:08] Speaker 1: But in terms of instincts and just having a natural
[11:11] Speaker 1: feel for the position, I think it might be a
[11:13] Speaker 1: different conversation for NFL teams of just Okay, let's see
[11:16] Speaker 1: what it can do. And obviously having that ability as
[11:19] Speaker 1: a blitzer is always going to be a huge, huge plus.
[11:22] Speaker 1: You kind of need that at the NFL level. That's
[11:23] Speaker 1: where the best linebackers are anyways. So it's fascinating since
[11:26] Speaker 1: you were there, though, like what did you see just
[11:29] Speaker 1: from those two guys and at in terms of the
[11:32] Speaker 1: position drills in the stadium? Like what did you like?
[11:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, That's why I kind of mentioned the
[11:36] Speaker 2: whole strength of the class as a whole, because there's
[11:38] Speaker 2: been many years where I've sat there and there's maybe
[11:40] Speaker 2: one or two guys that you're like, Okay, this guy's
[11:43] Speaker 2: a stud. The rest of them forgettable. We'll see how
[11:45] Speaker 2: long they last in the NFL. This group this year
[11:48] Speaker 2: had a ton of talented guys, and if it wasn't
[11:50] Speaker 2: for recent styles at the top of the class, there
[11:52] Speaker 2: were multiple other guys who would have been the best
[11:54] Speaker 2: linebacker in their class in previous years. And they get
[11:56] Speaker 2: overshadowed by the two buck eyes. But when you watched Reese,
[12:00] Speaker 2: you watch Styles. First off, they're polished. Their explosive just
[12:04] Speaker 2: fluidity is off the charts. They are natural athletes. I
[12:08] Speaker 2: thought watching Reese finish a play where like you know,
[12:10] Speaker 2: you're running through the cone at the end and then
[12:12] Speaker 2: watching the next guy do it, and I'm like, there
[12:14] Speaker 2: is a noticeable gap in how quickly they get from
[12:17] Speaker 2: point A to point B, and the same was true
[12:19] Speaker 2: with Styles. Now he stumbled a couple of times, but
[12:21] Speaker 2: to kind of paint the picture of how explosive he
[12:24] Speaker 2: is as as an athlete.
[12:25] Speaker 3: They're doing this pass rushing drill.
[12:27] Speaker 2: They're going around the bag and he wipes out, but
[12:30] Speaker 2: he wiped out like incredibly violently before getting up and
[12:33] Speaker 2: trying to finish the drill. Like that's how explosive of
[12:36] Speaker 2: a player he is. And you could just see the
[12:38] Speaker 2: difference between those two and the rest, although the difference
[12:41] Speaker 2: wasn't as wise as it would be in a typical
[12:42] Speaker 2: year because there is so much other talent. I think
[12:44] Speaker 2: about the Texas tech Jacob btt Rodriguez, Kid Betcher from Oregon,
[12:48] Speaker 2: I thought I did really well and the drills, didn't
[12:50] Speaker 2: test quite as well. There's a number of other guys,
[12:52] Speaker 2: as a kid from Cincinnati that is also a very
[12:55] Speaker 2: good linebacker. So there's a lot of depth in this group,
[12:57] Speaker 2: more than I've seen over the last decade. But it's
[12:59] Speaker 2: very clear who the top two guys are.
[13:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, Jacob Brodriguez from Texas Tech didn't know how he
[13:05] Speaker 1: would test and ran really well, looked really good for
[13:08] Speaker 1: his size. A guy maybe believed to be kind of
[13:11] Speaker 1: a late too, he might have pushed himself up before
[13:13] Speaker 1: we move on from the linebackers to the lineman. If
[13:16] Speaker 1: if you've got any other shout outs at linebacker, go
[13:19] Speaker 1: for it. If not, tell me what you stuck out
[13:23] Speaker 1: to you most at defensive line.
[13:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, the kid from Cincinnat's name is Jake's Jake Goldey.
[13:28] Speaker 2: I think he was a guy that most people expected
[13:31] Speaker 2: to test pretty well, and then he lived up to
[13:33] Speaker 2: that and then also did really well in the drills,
[13:35] Speaker 2: and I think he earned himself some money tonight. Wesley Saint,
[13:40] Speaker 2: I think that's how you say it from Miami. He
[13:42] Speaker 2: didn't test really well, but I love the way he
[13:44] Speaker 2: looked in the drills. He made a super athletic grab
[13:46] Speaker 2: running down the line in one of the early change
[13:49] Speaker 2: of direction drills and kind of made a lot of
[13:51] Speaker 2: plays like that throughout his workout on the field.
[13:54] Speaker 3: I thought he was good.
[13:55] Speaker 2: There's this under six foot linebacker from pitt his name's
[13:58] Speaker 2: Kyle Lewis, and I think he's basically a box safety,
[14:01] Speaker 2: but he was really quick because I think he's a
[14:03] Speaker 2: box safety. Jack Kelly from BYU had a strong showing,
[14:06] Speaker 2: and then you had the kid from Duke and then
[14:09] Speaker 2: Anthony Hill Junior from Texas as well. That was like
[14:11] Speaker 2: my honorable mentions group from this overall linebacking group. But
[14:15] Speaker 2: I mean, there's this is the first time where I
[14:17] Speaker 2: put together three linebackers for the All Combine team and
[14:19] Speaker 2: felt really good about all.
[14:20] Speaker 1: Right, like your All Combined team, we're gonna be hitting
[14:23] Speaker 1: the rest of the positions. On a Sunday night recap show,
[14:26] Speaker 1: Nick Shook is working long hours there in Indianapolis, and yeah,
[14:30] Speaker 1: it is crazy how many linebackers, for instance, Rodriguez, Kyle
[14:34] Speaker 1: Lewis you mentioned, who are kind of projected to be
[14:37] Speaker 1: in that day to range. So just like a really
[14:39] Speaker 1: deep year at the position. Let's go to the edge
[14:43] Speaker 1: spot where you know, the headline was definitely David Bailey,
[14:48] Speaker 1: very slight favorite right now to be the number two
[14:52] Speaker 1: overall pick in terms of the if you wanted to
[14:55] Speaker 1: get into the wagering of it all in Vegas, tell
[14:59] Speaker 1: me about his day as as kind of edge one.
[15:03] Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, here's the thing so I had.
[15:05] Speaker 2: I was kind of confused about how to organize these
[15:07] Speaker 2: because of the Reese discussion that we just had right
[15:10] Speaker 2: because they.
[15:11] Speaker 1: Could be anywhere whatever you want to put him Bailey.
[15:13] Speaker 2: Bailey is the most polished edge out there. But we
[15:16] Speaker 2: also didn't see ruben Bain perform. We didn't see Masidor perform.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Both of the Miami edge rushers, they did not participate
[15:23] Speaker 2: in the on field workout. There was also the talk
[15:25] Speaker 2: about ruben Bain's arm length that we've heard all week,
[15:27] Speaker 2: and that was another topic today when he came in
[15:30] Speaker 2: under thirty one inches, which was a mild surprise to
[15:33] Speaker 2: even those who thought they had him, you know, projected best.
[15:36] Speaker 2: But for the guys that were on the field, Bailey
[15:37] Speaker 2: right now has the most complete package for somebody that's
[15:40] Speaker 2: pro ready as an edge rusher.
[15:43] Speaker 4: He did.
[15:43] Speaker 2: He posts a four five forty twelve nine broad jump,
[15:47] Speaker 2: you know, crushed it and actually I think it was
[15:50] Speaker 2: ten nine on the broad ject at twelve nine and
[15:52] Speaker 2: huge vert.
[15:53] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[15:55] Speaker 2: His athleticism score was eighty from next Gen and he
[15:59] Speaker 2: was solid throughout the drills. He's a natural athlete, like
[16:02] Speaker 2: he's just he has that burst. He just looks like
[16:06] Speaker 2: like the fit of an edge rusher. The way he moves,
[16:08] Speaker 2: you can just tell it's a pro level guy. But
[16:11] Speaker 2: there was an interesting detail I found in his workout
[16:13] Speaker 2: that I didn't notice before, and I don't really think
[16:15] Speaker 2: it's gonna matter all that much. He fired his feet
[16:18] Speaker 2: at a higher rate than I've seen anybody else do
[16:20] Speaker 2: on the field in quite a while at that position
[16:22] Speaker 2: group and among the guys that he was on the
[16:24] Speaker 2: field with tonight.
[16:24] Speaker 3: But there was an interesting way that he went around.
[16:26] Speaker 2: Some of the turns and these like agility drills where
[16:28] Speaker 2: you're changing direction, whereas like some guys might take three
[16:31] Speaker 2: steps to get around a corner and they might cut
[16:34] Speaker 2: really sharply, and Bailey's feet are so fast that like
[16:37] Speaker 2: he like pedals them down and like rotates around the turn.
[16:40] Speaker 2: And I'm like, that's unique, and I wonder how that's
[16:43] Speaker 2: going to translate. But you can't deny the production at
[16:45] Speaker 2: Texas Tech. He was a huge difference maker and he's
[16:48] Speaker 2: it's totally justified for him to be considered a top
[16:51] Speaker 2: five pick.
[16:51] Speaker 1: Yeah. Then, and they showed him on one of those
[16:55] Speaker 1: drills kind of matching him up with another one of
[16:57] Speaker 1: the players. Now I forget which one was. I don't
[16:59] Speaker 1: think goes cash as hell and and they and they
[17:03] Speaker 1: looked almost too similar in a way. The DJ kind
[17:06] Speaker 1: of hinted just that like just like a hint of stiffness,
[17:09] Speaker 1: which is is crazy and it's probably nitpicking, but when
[17:12] Speaker 1: you went with his measurements and his size, like the
[17:16] Speaker 1: closest comp was von Miller, which is just but he
[17:20] Speaker 1: doesn't seem to necessarily have that sort of same bend.
[17:23] Speaker 1: I mean, who does that?
[17:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the bend.
[17:25] Speaker 1: The bend is not there, right, but that's the all
[17:27] Speaker 1: time bend guy I did. Like next Gen stats has
[17:30] Speaker 1: a production score of just like total production over the
[17:33] Speaker 1: last five years. And here's your top five players over
[17:37] Speaker 1: the last five years. Number one was Will Anderson. Now
[17:42] Speaker 1: I forget what the order was. Bailey is in the
[17:45] Speaker 1: mix there. Then it's Abdull Carter, Aiden Hutchinson is in
[17:51] Speaker 1: the mix as well, and Reuben Bain was also in
[17:54] Speaker 1: that top five, So that's a good list to be on.
[17:56] Speaker 1: I mean, you can't you can't mess with that production.
[17:59] Speaker 1: And going back to yeah, you talked about the short arms,
[18:03] Speaker 1: There's never been a top one hundred pick at that
[18:06] Speaker 1: position with sub thirty one inch arms. A lot of people, though,
[18:09] Speaker 1: say the way that he wins with his powers and
[18:12] Speaker 1: the counters that he's actually come up with and leverage,
[18:14] Speaker 1: like the short arms are almost an advantage for him,
[18:17] Speaker 1: and he's kind of shown he can overcome it at
[18:20] Speaker 1: a high level. Also, Adam Schefter had a very funny
[18:24] Speaker 1: tweet that said, actually two teams measured him at thirty
[18:28] Speaker 1: two inches and these combine measurements have been really small
[18:32] Speaker 1: over the years. So yeah, you definitely wonder where Adam
[18:34] Speaker 1: Schefter is getting that information. I'm sure it was coming
[18:37] Speaker 1: from the Ruben Bain camp. But I don't know where
[18:40] Speaker 1: you're at in terms of concerns, because remember the whole
[18:43] Speaker 1: Aiden Hutchinson deal, like a couple of years ago. Of
[18:46] Speaker 1: his short arms obviously hasn't been a problem for him,
[18:50] Speaker 1: but Bains was like another inch inch and a half
[18:53] Speaker 1: I think shorter.
[18:55] Speaker 2: I really only care about if you have short arms
[18:59] Speaker 2: as if you're a speed guy, because if you're gonna
[19:02] Speaker 2: win the speed, the best way to do is to
[19:04] Speaker 2: keep offensive lineman's hands off of you, and usually need
[19:06] Speaker 2: the length as well to prevent them from It's like boxing,
[19:09] Speaker 2: like the longer reach you can find on the outside
[19:10] Speaker 2: with a longer reach, right, So the same thing kind
[19:12] Speaker 2: of applies for ed rushers who win the speed.
[19:14] Speaker 3: Speed is not Bain's game. Bains game's power.
[19:17] Speaker 2: He's not gonna care if you get your hands on
[19:19] Speaker 2: him and his arms are short, because he's got the
[19:20] Speaker 2: power to overcome that. So I don't really care about
[19:23] Speaker 2: the arm length thing.
[19:24] Speaker 3: I think.
[19:24] Speaker 2: I think I've seen enough from his production at Miami
[19:27] Speaker 2: to know that he is a stud, and he's going
[19:28] Speaker 2: to be a stud at the next level. Take him,
[19:31] Speaker 2: don't worry about the length, and if he slides because
[19:33] Speaker 2: the length a little bit, then good for the team
[19:34] Speaker 2: that's there to scoop him up. And it also kind
[19:37] Speaker 2: of points to like we talked about hand size with quarterbacks.
[19:40] Speaker 2: I only care about hand size if you're catching or
[19:42] Speaker 2: holding the football as a running back, not as a quarterback.
[19:45] Speaker 2: It really doesn't matter to me. We think about Kenny
[19:46] Speaker 2: Pickett in his small hands, and you can continue to
[19:48] Speaker 2: go down the list with different guys. I think about
[19:50] Speaker 2: Ricky Williams had small hands that mattered, he had a
[19:52] Speaker 2: fumbling issue early in his career.
[19:53] Speaker 1: I'm a little worried about Drake May's hand size after
[19:56] Speaker 1: seeing him play in the cold in the playoffs.
[19:58] Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, but it's just like, I don't care
[20:01] Speaker 2: as much about those measurements unless there's another player in
[20:05] Speaker 2: this group, for example, that I think the arm length
[20:09] Speaker 2: does matter because while Bain's arms are short, cash Is
[20:13] Speaker 2: hal from Texas A and M had even shorter arms,
[20:15] Speaker 2: and he is a speed winner, and I think that
[20:18] Speaker 2: he lost a good amount of stock today because of
[20:20] Speaker 2: his short arms, And it just the athleticism score doesn't
[20:24] Speaker 2: match up when you consider those measurements. And then you
[20:26] Speaker 2: watch his workout on the field and you're like, Okay,
[20:27] Speaker 2: I see the fluidity and the speed there, but something's
[20:30] Speaker 2: lacking that I don't think he's the first round pick
[20:32] Speaker 2: that a lot of people think that he is. And
[20:33] Speaker 2: so that's a case where measurement kind of does matter
[20:35] Speaker 2: because of the style that he plays with it doesn't
[20:37] Speaker 2: apply to Baine, though.
[20:38] Speaker 1: Interesting he was a guy who, according to NGS, was
[20:43] Speaker 1: the fastest in terms of the pass rush drill where
[20:47] Speaker 1: it's like rounding the corner that he was moving the fastest,
[20:51] Speaker 1: and that apparently matches up with his game tracking. He's
[20:56] Speaker 1: from A and M more of a speed rusher, a
[20:58] Speaker 1: guy projected for maybe the middle ish, maybe middle late
[21:02] Speaker 1: of the first round. So it's interesting. It's it's maybe
[21:06] Speaker 1: what you like because you could see that and say
[21:08] Speaker 1: he's he's moving the fastest around the corner, and you
[21:12] Speaker 1: get excited. I saw some other guys who just like,
[21:14] Speaker 1: did not look at smooth Keldric Falk. I believe it
[21:17] Speaker 1: was yes who just did not look as smooth to
[21:19] Speaker 1: me in the drills. Give me some of your favorites
[21:22] Speaker 1: and I guess least favorites too out of the edges.
[21:25] Speaker 2: Well with Hal, he also ran a four five nine forty,
[21:28] Speaker 2: which was not fast enough given you know his archetype
[21:31] Speaker 2: that he's a speed player. So I honestly think that
[21:33] Speaker 2: he may have fallen out of the first round entirely
[21:35] Speaker 2: after Wow, which is unfortunate, but that could be the reality.
[21:38] Speaker 2: When it comes to Falk, I'm glad you said that,
[21:40] Speaker 2: because I felt like, you know, he came in, He's
[21:42] Speaker 2: a kid from Auburn, and he came in with a
[21:43] Speaker 2: lot of promise, expected to be a first round pick,
[21:46] Speaker 2: and a lot of his drill was just the half
[21:50] Speaker 2: hazard in a way like it was just it wasn't clean.
[21:53] Speaker 2: A lot of his reps were not clean. There were
[21:55] Speaker 2: good moments. I thought he got stronger as the workout
[21:57] Speaker 2: progress once he gets to running the hoop, that sort
[21:59] Speaker 2: of thing that usually separates some of your premier players
[22:02] Speaker 2: from the rest of the pack, and I thought that
[22:03] Speaker 2: he was very good in that.
[22:04] Speaker 3: But earlier drills, you know.
[22:07] Speaker 2: Slips, stumbles, that sort of thing, not the quickest in
[22:09] Speaker 2: change of direction.
[22:10] Speaker 3: I was a bit surprised by that.
[22:13] Speaker 2: So he did not end up making it onto the
[22:15] Speaker 2: top of my group, but he did end up in
[22:18] Speaker 2: the houniable mentions because of the way that he finished.
[22:21] Speaker 2: Other guys that I liked at edge rusher George Gums,
[22:23] Speaker 2: which sounds like a fictional name, but he comes from
[22:26] Speaker 2: Florida and I thought he had a very impressive workout.
[22:30] Speaker 2: Romelo Height from Texas Tech, very explosive, good burst on
[22:33] Speaker 2: him as well.
[22:34] Speaker 3: Max Lowland. I think that's how you say from Iowa.
[22:38] Speaker 2: He's a classic Iowa edge rusher, kind of not really
[22:41] Speaker 2: in the mold of Lucas van Ness, but similar just
[22:44] Speaker 2: because you see kids from Iowa and they usually fit
[22:46] Speaker 2: these certain archetypes, and he definitely fits it. But he
[22:49] Speaker 2: was very polished. You could tell he'd play a lot
[22:51] Speaker 2: of football with the Hawkeyes. Vincent Anthony Junior from Duke,
[22:54] Speaker 2: that's actually the Duke kid that I referenced earlier. I
[22:57] Speaker 2: had him in the wrong position group. And then Mason
[22:59] Speaker 2: Rieger from wiscond much like kids from Iowa, Wisconsin edge rusher,
[23:03] Speaker 2: who is very polished, very controlled, and a little more
[23:06] Speaker 2: explosive than I thought he was. When he got into
[23:08] Speaker 2: some of those the short zone drop drills, he had
[23:11] Speaker 2: more burst than I thought. So I'm very intrigued by
[23:13] Speaker 2: him because a lot of his reps were when he
[23:16] Speaker 2: came to fundamentals, they were they were done very well.
[23:18] Speaker 1: Are you saying that Iowa has a type, you know,
[23:21] Speaker 1: like Iowa definitely has a type Kurcha type.
[23:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's exactly what I was thinking, except he's
[23:26] Speaker 2: faster Thanesa was.
[23:28] Speaker 1: Hey, they're the only ones that saw pass color and
[23:31] Speaker 1: gave Riley Moss a chance to play cornerback. Or maybe
[23:34] Speaker 1: they didn't see pass color, but either way, they took
[23:36] Speaker 1: advantage about to get a great second contract here, so
[23:41] Speaker 1: someone else should have should have snapped him up. Let's
[23:43] Speaker 1: fly through the defensive tackles before we take a break.
[23:47] Speaker 1: I'm fascinated by Caleb Banks, the Florida Prospect. You know,
[23:51] Speaker 1: in general, this was an interesting group because you know,
[23:55] Speaker 1: DJ has four guys kind of in that like late
[23:59] Speaker 1: first early second group, and they're all close. Lee Hunter
[24:03] Speaker 1: of Texas Tech, Caden McDonald of Ohio State looked like
[24:08] Speaker 1: had a fun day. Caleb Banks is also in that
[24:11] Speaker 1: mix and in Caleb Banks is a big dude six
[24:14] Speaker 1: six three twenty seven the longest wingspan of any defensive
[24:19] Speaker 1: lineman since nineteen ninety nine, that's just when they started
[24:21] Speaker 1: building it, so basically he has the longest wingspan in
[24:24] Speaker 1: the history of the combine. He kind of looks like
[24:26] Speaker 1: the Forrest Buckner out there, except he's like broad jumping
[24:30] Speaker 1: and athletically testing even better than that. Do you think
[24:33] Speaker 1: he's a he's a player and who stood out to you?
[24:37] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[24:37] Speaker 1: He did.
[24:37] Speaker 2: He actually doesn't end up making my all Combine team.
[24:40] Speaker 2: But it's not really not against him. He just didn't
[24:42] Speaker 2: jump out as much as a couple of the other
[24:43] Speaker 2: guys in the drills, so they did, but all the
[24:45] Speaker 2: things that you just meant went over, you know, puts
[24:47] Speaker 2: him up there in that group. I actually think it's
[24:49] Speaker 2: a very deep defensive tackle class this year because let's
[24:53] Speaker 2: think about like Peter Woods from Clemson, like doesn't get
[24:56] Speaker 2: out there and participate in the drills, doesn't run a forty,
[25:00] Speaker 2: but his measurable stack up he's usually at the top
[25:02] Speaker 2: of this group. And some of the other guys that
[25:05] Speaker 2: you just mentioned are also in there. But I also
[25:07] Speaker 2: some of the guys that jumped out to me on
[25:09] Speaker 2: the field that are not in this group that most consider.
[25:11] Speaker 2: Zane Durant from Penn State puts down the fastest forty
[25:14] Speaker 2: time as a defensive tackle, which how much do you
[25:17] Speaker 2: care about that? Think about Jordan Davis for me for
[25:19] Speaker 2: a few years back, and you're like, well, does that
[25:21] Speaker 2: really matter that much?
[25:22] Speaker 1: It doesn't accept tend though too. Zane Durant look crazy exactly.
[25:25] Speaker 1: His explosion was different from the rest.
[25:28] Speaker 2: Sometimes when you sit up in the suite at the
[25:29] Speaker 2: combine and you see these guys perform, there's one or
[25:32] Speaker 2: two that just move differently than the rest. I think about.
[25:34] Speaker 2: Tristan Wurfs was that way. Bjon Robinson was that way.
[25:37] Speaker 2: Zane Durant was that way. He was clearly of the
[25:40] Speaker 2: guys that were doing the drills today, the best one
[25:42] Speaker 2: out there. Explosive, very refined in his technique, very pro ready.
[25:47] Speaker 2: I'm really excited to see where he lands, because I'm
[25:49] Speaker 2: not sure if he makes it into that top five
[25:50] Speaker 2: group or if he's a great value pick for a
[25:52] Speaker 2: team that's picking outside of those top five defensive tackles
[25:55] Speaker 2: in Day two somewhere and makes some team really happy.
[25:59] Speaker 2: He was one of my guys in that group. I
[26:00] Speaker 2: was also very torn with my other inclusion on this
[26:05] Speaker 2: all combined team between two guys, Demante k Hard from Clemson,
[26:09] Speaker 2: who is just a violent defensive tackle, very athletic, long,
[26:14] Speaker 2: and then Caleb Proctor who spent his college career in
[26:17] Speaker 2: anonymity at Southeastern Louisiana. And I'm watching him move through
[26:21] Speaker 2: these drills and I'm like, he moves like an NFL player.
[26:24] Speaker 2: He moves as well as a lot of these other
[26:25] Speaker 2: guys do. How is he at Southeastern Louisiana the whole time,
[26:28] Speaker 2: and I think it's a size thing. I think that
[26:29] Speaker 2: when he finds his match with an NFL team, it's
[26:32] Speaker 2: got to be with a team that relies on a
[26:33] Speaker 2: lot of movement and stunts, because man on man, I
[26:36] Speaker 2: think he'll get buried.
[26:37] Speaker 3: But if you move him around and rely on.
[26:39] Speaker 2: His athleticism to get the an edge on a blocker,
[26:42] Speaker 2: he can make a difference.
[26:43] Speaker 4: He was.
[26:44] Speaker 2: I thought he cruised through a lot of these drills today.
[26:46] Speaker 2: He had great body control, super smooth and athletic. I
[26:49] Speaker 2: had just had a bunch of notes like that and
[26:51] Speaker 2: so fluid and things like that. So as the drills
[26:53] Speaker 2: went on, I was like, God, I think I got
[26:55] Speaker 2: to include this kid just because I'm very impressed with
[26:56] Speaker 2: how he moves now. Defensive line is kind of hard
[26:59] Speaker 2: to judge because what's at the core of a defensive
[27:02] Speaker 2: lineman is being able to be stout in the interior
[27:05] Speaker 2: and win shed blocks, fill gaps, that sort of thing,
[27:08] Speaker 2: and you're not getting that at the combine, So you
[27:09] Speaker 2: kind of have to judge how strong is their base,
[27:12] Speaker 2: how light are they on their feet, are they shifty?
[27:13] Speaker 3: Can they move back and forth? That sort of thing,
[27:15] Speaker 3: and he definitely did it.
[27:16] Speaker 2: But k Part, I think kind of projects as a
[27:19] Speaker 2: guy who put together a good athleticism showing he had
[27:23] Speaker 2: an eighty five athleticism score according to the next Gen Stats,
[27:25] Speaker 2: that was the third best among all defensive tackles.
[27:27] Speaker 3: Durant had the best at eighty nine.
[27:29] Speaker 2: The violence with which he plays and the fact that
[27:32] Speaker 2: you know he's a bigger guy, a longer guy, I
[27:34] Speaker 2: think that he projects to be somebody who could make
[27:36] Speaker 2: a difference there.
[27:37] Speaker 3: He was the first amount honorable mentions. I was very
[27:38] Speaker 3: impressed by him as well.
[27:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, and those are two guys Zeene Durant Caleb Proctor
[27:43] Speaker 1: who were not in the consensus top one hundred going
[27:46] Speaker 1: into today. Now, the consensus boards there, it's maybe not
[27:50] Speaker 1: that accurate at this time of year. It's more about
[27:52] Speaker 1: what the draft knicks think than what the league thinks.
[27:55] Speaker 1: But it's just a collection of all the different big
[27:57] Speaker 1: boards out there, and it gives someone like me just
[28:00] Speaker 1: a general feeling of like where these guys are at.
[28:03] Speaker 1: So I think they help themselves today, just like Nick
[28:06] Speaker 1: Schuok is helping us out today. I love this time
[28:09] Speaker 1: of year going to school on these guys. I also
[28:13] Speaker 1: liked that Matt Ryan was there in the crowd. He's
[28:16] Speaker 1: not phoning this job in like Tom Brady, you know
[28:19] Speaker 1: what I mean. He's like really making it happen.
[28:22] Speaker 2: That makes me feel so special to be in the
[28:24] Speaker 2: same building as somebody who thought he could sit among
[28:26] Speaker 2: everybody else as the president of football for the Atlanta Falcons.
[28:29] Speaker 2: Almost as special as being in the sweet next to
[28:32] Speaker 2: Ian Rappaport made me feel today.
[28:33] Speaker 1: Ooh, that's great, and yeah, I like, you know, there's
[28:37] Speaker 1: this the Falcons right now, there's this whole debate whether
[28:41] Speaker 1: the Bears will get credit for Ian Cunningham going to
[28:46] Speaker 1: be the GM of the Falcons because you're supposed to
[28:49] Speaker 1: get draft picks if a minority candidate leaves from your
[28:54] Speaker 1: program and gets the highest ranking you know, football decision
[28:57] Speaker 1: maker job at another program, you actually get mid on
[29:00] Speaker 1: draft picks, and they're not right now because Matt Ryan
[29:04] Speaker 1: is above him on the totem pole, and him showing
[29:06] Speaker 1: up for the combine actually kind of supports the fact
[29:09] Speaker 1: that it probably is going to be Matt Ryan in
[29:12] Speaker 1: charge over There also bad moment for Aaron Glenn, who
[29:16] Speaker 1: was caught a sleep on NFL network. I'm not sure
[29:20] Speaker 1: because I know you're actually there watching what's happening. I'm
[29:23] Speaker 1: just looking at Twitter and Aaron Glenn was asleep. Someone
[29:27] Speaker 1: very clearly like said you know, yelled at him and
[29:31] Speaker 1: was like, you're asleep on camera right now, like Aaron.
[29:35] Speaker 1: And then he suddenly wakes up and he looks at
[29:36] Speaker 1: the camera, and because of there's a tape delay, I
[29:39] Speaker 1: think he looked up to see himself asleep on NFL network,
[29:43] Speaker 1: which is has to be like the worst way you
[29:45] Speaker 1: can possibly wake up. And unfortunately, I feel like it's
[29:48] Speaker 1: gonna be as it is moving forward.
[29:52] Speaker 2: It is when the Jets struggle, that's the first clip
[29:55] Speaker 2: that we're going to see popularized and just spread across
[29:57] Speaker 2: social media. But it's still not as bad as the
[29:59] Speaker 2: couple at the Cold Blake concert. So at least he's
[30:01] Speaker 2: got that.
[30:02] Speaker 1: He's got that. But I mean, I think Jets fans
[30:04] Speaker 1: at this point are like, can we just get through
[30:06] Speaker 1: a combine day without?
[30:07] Speaker 3: Hey man, long days?
[30:10] Speaker 1: Our organization just not embarrass us for a day. All right,
[30:13] Speaker 1: let's take a break. We're gonna come back and we're
[30:16] Speaker 1: gonna fly some through some news because I feel bad
[30:19] Speaker 1: right now, like Shuck's been working for fifteen hours straight.
[30:22] Speaker 1: We got to let him go get a steak or
[30:23] Speaker 1: something in Indianapolis. Back in a minute, back on NFL Daily,
[30:35] Speaker 1: I can recognize the west in room. I was just
[30:41] Speaker 1: in it. But I gotta say I'm not complaining about
[30:45] Speaker 1: being back in sunny southern California mid seventies. Today, Shook,
[30:50] Speaker 1: you still got a waste to go and get ready.
[30:53] Speaker 1: It is time for charging into the offseason, presented by
[30:56] Speaker 1: Apple Card for all your game day purchases. Welcome up
[31:00] Speaker 1: to some trade news today. Shook got a trade. The
[31:03] Speaker 1: Jets made a trade Jermaine Johnson, former first round pick
[31:08] Speaker 1: I think has had a solid career tours Achilles hasn't
[31:11] Speaker 1: quite been the same since is going to his former coach,
[31:15] Speaker 1: Robert Salah in Tennessee for defensive tackle Tovandre Sweat, a
[31:21] Speaker 1: second round pick who we talked a lot about a
[31:23] Speaker 1: couple of years ago at the Combine because there was
[31:26] Speaker 1: off field concerns. Is this guy take the game seriously enough? Now?
[31:30] Speaker 1: These two defensive linemen getting swapped. Just as a little
[31:34] Speaker 1: bit of a recap, I think Sweats probably performed two
[31:38] Speaker 1: expectations in his career. Good expectation. He's played pretty well
[31:42] Speaker 1: as a nose tackle through two seasons. What did you
[31:45] Speaker 1: make of this move? The Jets, you know, getting Jermaine Johnson,
[31:49] Speaker 1: I mean, the Jets getting to Andandre Sweat.
[31:52] Speaker 2: Sweat's also been the inspiration for some of the more
[31:55] Speaker 2: hilarious calls that we've gotten in the last couple of
[31:57] Speaker 2: years when he makes an occasional play on the ball,
[31:59] Speaker 2: like a turn up riggins the ball in his hands,
[32:00] Speaker 2: because a big men move with the football is always entertaining.
[32:03] Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree.
[32:04] Speaker 2: I think he's lived up the expectation and the way
[32:06] Speaker 2: that you summarize Johnson as accurate as well.
[32:08] Speaker 3: I just I think it's a matter of fit.
[32:09] Speaker 2: Robert Sala comes into Tennessee and he probably accepts that
[32:12] Speaker 2: Sweat does not fit in the way that he wants
[32:14] Speaker 2: to play defense, because Sweat is a big bodied, you know,
[32:16] Speaker 2: gap plugging nose. And you got to think about who
[32:19] Speaker 2: were the feature players in Sala's defense in New York.
[32:22] Speaker 2: It was guys like Quinn Williams who were the future
[32:24] Speaker 2: players in Salas defense. In San Francisco this year was
[32:27] Speaker 2: rookie CJ. West and other players like that. Is they
[32:29] Speaker 2: tried to rebuild their defensive line. Sweat does not fit
[32:31] Speaker 2: the mold of any of those guys, so it makes
[32:33] Speaker 2: sense to do this deal and also get one of
[32:36] Speaker 2: Sala's old guys that he likes from the Jets to
[32:39] Speaker 2: plug in their at edge rusher because they need help
[32:41] Speaker 2: in that front seven, and so it makes a ton
[32:43] Speaker 2: of sense in a one for one.
[32:44] Speaker 3: It works out for me.
[32:45] Speaker 2: It's a nice, little, solid, explainable, understandable trade in late February.
[32:50] Speaker 1: Yes, and since they both have top four picks, you know,
[32:53] Speaker 1: people wonder will that impact anything. No, this trade should
[32:57] Speaker 1: not impact anything. Even if let's say the Jets the
[33:04] Speaker 1: Titans like signed another defensive end in free agency, I
[33:08] Speaker 1: don't think that really gives away what they're gonna do.
[33:11] Speaker 1: I think you just have to take the best player,
[33:13] Speaker 1: and Jermaine Johnson has one year left on his contract.
[33:18] Speaker 1: I also think finances, you know, were a fact here.
[33:21] Speaker 1: The Titans have a lot of cap space and so
[33:23] Speaker 1: they can take on a big fifth year option contract,
[33:26] Speaker 1: whereas Tvandre Sweat has two years for pretty cheap. Just
[33:29] Speaker 1: on the football merits of it all, I think it's
[33:31] Speaker 1: a pretty good trade for the Jets. It does make
[33:33] Speaker 1: you wonder. There's been like little whispers of like, you know,
[33:37] Speaker 1: how much does Sweat love the game? All that sort
[33:39] Speaker 1: of stuff, like it is you see the type of
[33:41] Speaker 1: guy you want to build around, and so maybe that
[33:43] Speaker 1: factors into it too, But just the football. You get
[33:45] Speaker 1: a cheaper player for an extra year who's played pretty well,
[33:49] Speaker 1: not bad for the Jets. The Titans also cut Lloyd
[33:52] Speaker 1: cushion Berry, who two years ago was one of the
[33:55] Speaker 1: highest paid players. I mean, the Titans cut Lloyd cushion
[33:58] Speaker 1: Berry who two years ago were was one of the
[34:00] Speaker 1: highest paid players in free agency. He was a center,
[34:03] Speaker 1: suffered a really serious injury, never quite looked the same,
[34:06] Speaker 1: and he is now free and the Titans have a
[34:09] Speaker 1: lot of cap space and a lot of needs, and
[34:12] Speaker 1: now they have a new need at center. Another possible trade.
[34:17] Speaker 1: Cameron Wolf of the NFL Network reports there's mutual interest
[34:21] Speaker 1: in an Anthony Richardson trade to the Vikings. That would
[34:26] Speaker 1: be spicy going to Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings, you know,
[34:31] Speaker 1: need a quarterback and Anthony Richardson. It was officially you know, announced,
[34:35] Speaker 1: you know, by reporters that they gave him permission to
[34:37] Speaker 1: seek a trade. We kind of knew that he would
[34:38] Speaker 1: be available.
[34:39] Speaker 6: Yeah, have we talked about this on this show, because
[34:41] Speaker 6: I know I've had these discussions with a number of
[34:43] Speaker 6: different people about how Anthony Richardson has no futures in
[34:46] Speaker 6: Indianapolis and that this was probably going to happen at
[34:49] Speaker 6: some point, and so for it to come to fruition
[34:51] Speaker 6: at least in the form of a rumor a report
[34:54] Speaker 6: from Camp Wolf, which is hilarious by the way, because
[34:56] Speaker 6: I saw Cam last night and we had a nice conversation.
[34:58] Speaker 2: Then you wake up this morning and and Cam's just
[35:01] Speaker 2: pounding the pavement getting the story. He's out there because
[35:03] Speaker 2: this is how the combine works. Yeah, it makes all
[35:06] Speaker 2: the sense in the world. The Vikings not so much,
[35:09] Speaker 2: because I know that they need to bring in competition.
[35:10] Speaker 2: They feel like they need to push JJ McCarthy and
[35:12] Speaker 2: they also need to have better options behind him. But
[35:15] Speaker 2: do you want to invite what would inevitably be become
[35:20] Speaker 2: a distraction because you have two young quarterbacks to both
[35:24] Speaker 2: former first round picks, and what happens when McCarthy struggles
[35:28] Speaker 2: and then oh go to Richardson And do you really
[35:31] Speaker 2: want that instability?
[35:32] Speaker 3: I'm not so certain.
[35:33] Speaker 2: But then again, This is a team that happily added
[35:36] Speaker 2: Daniel Jones, and you know he didn't obviously take the
[35:39] Speaker 2: field for them during that season, but they're not unfamiliar
[35:43] Speaker 2: with taking a swing at a former first round prospect
[35:46] Speaker 2: at the quarterback position and seeing what they could potentially
[35:48] Speaker 2: get out of them.
[35:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, the problem is he's too close to what they
[35:54] Speaker 1: have in JJ McCarthy. Yes, like a guy who is
[35:57] Speaker 1: a total question mark and is young and needs.
[35:59] Speaker 2: To does it doesn't It doesn't shit what they need,
[36:02] Speaker 2: which is they need somebody reliable behind JJ.
[36:04] Speaker 1: I can actually only imagine him being there if they
[36:07] Speaker 1: brought in another player too, that they have three players
[36:10] Speaker 1: and it's a veteran because I frankly expect them to
[36:13] Speaker 1: bring in someone who has a better chance to unseat
[36:17] Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy. In fact, I kind of expect them to
[36:21] Speaker 1: bring in someone who will be the favorite to start
[36:23] Speaker 1: this year. But they have to find that guy. It's
[36:26] Speaker 1: easier said than done. So maybe there's interest, but I
[36:31] Speaker 1: don't know if I don't know if that would be
[36:33] Speaker 1: it for quarterback, but we'll see that. That would be fascinating.
[36:36] Speaker 1: I also heard a Cardinals I read a Cardinals source
[36:40] Speaker 1: who said that they heard that Gino Smith could be
[36:43] Speaker 1: in the mix as well as Anthony Richardson in Arizona,
[36:46] Speaker 1: which is fascinating.
[36:49] Speaker 3: They don't, they don't seem.
[36:50] Speaker 2: To be very on top of Kyler, so like they
[36:52] Speaker 2: be very on board with that, So that makes no sense.
[36:54] Speaker 1: I don't think the Kyler thing is happening. One thing
[36:56] Speaker 1: we we failed to mention on the last show that
[36:59] Speaker 1: I meant to it was it was hilarious that Kyler's
[37:03] Speaker 1: camp came out after the Cardinals said that they've spoken
[37:06] Speaker 1: with Kyler Murray and they've kind of been letting it
[37:10] Speaker 1: be known, like, hey, maybe we'll keep Kyler. There was
[37:12] Speaker 1: a source that told ESPN, actually, they haven't talked to
[37:15] Speaker 1: us at all. He hasn't spoken with Antiausen for once.
[37:18] Speaker 1: So it's like you can try to pretend like you're
[37:22] Speaker 1: keeping me potentially just to raise leverage when you have
[37:24] Speaker 1: no interest yet. I'm not. We're not going to play
[37:26] Speaker 1: that game.
[37:26] Speaker 2: We're not going to help you out, Cardinals, the leverage game.
[37:29] Speaker 2: It's always fun this time of year. It produces lies, fibbs,
[37:33] Speaker 2: you know, whatever you want.
[37:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, Kyler, I do not think his stay in there.
[37:37] Speaker 1: Pro Football Talk reported that the Raiders want two first
[37:40] Speaker 1: round picks plus a player for Max Crosby. That's the
[37:45] Speaker 1: exact price, and the player was Kenny Clark of Michael Parsons.
[37:51] Speaker 1: I think for Max Crosby, I think that tells me, Yeah,
[37:54] Speaker 1: the Raiders would do that, and they probably I think,
[37:59] Speaker 1: know that that they won't get it, and that they're
[38:01] Speaker 1: okay with that.
[38:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, let's think about the art of negotiation. You start
[38:05] Speaker 2: with a high price, they come in with a low price,
[38:07] Speaker 2: and you work your way towards the middle. I guess
[38:09] Speaker 2: this is just the starting point for them to see
[38:11] Speaker 2: at least get the wheels turning on a potential move,
[38:15] Speaker 2: which it kind of just feels inevitable at this point.
[38:18] Speaker 2: I don't think they'll fetch that offer. I think you're right,
[38:20] Speaker 2: it's too high. That made sense for Michael Parsons, it
[38:24] Speaker 2: does not make quite as much sense for Max Crosby.
[38:26] Speaker 2: No matter how good of a player he is, he's
[38:28] Speaker 2: not the same player as Parsons.
[38:29] Speaker 1: And Ian Rapaport pointed out on our show. He's coming
[38:32] Speaker 1: off an injury and that really could mess things up.
[38:36] Speaker 1: I actually don't think Max Crosby's going to get traded
[38:39] Speaker 1: because I think the injury plus what they'll want. But
[38:43] Speaker 1: you raise a really good point, setting the bar high.
[38:46] Speaker 1: It's true if they're a leak, if that's getting leaked
[38:48] Speaker 1: to Pro Football Talk, then a first then a third
[38:52] Speaker 1: in a player would probably do it, So maybe that
[38:55] Speaker 1: could happen. I also thought it was interesting Clint Kubiak
[38:59] Speaker 1: came out and told the local media he is looking
[39:02] Speaker 1: for a quote two man show at running back in
[39:05] Speaker 1: that Ashton Genty quote needs a wingman and that's how
[39:09] Speaker 1: he likes to run backfields.
[39:12] Speaker 3: Yeah, we just saw that.
[39:14] Speaker 1: It makes sense. But that's a top ten pick at
[39:16] Speaker 1: running back. So if you drafted him in dynasty fantasy
[39:20] Speaker 1: football leagues, maybe not the best news.
[39:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, not a good pick for dynasty owners, not a
[39:24] Speaker 2: good pick for fantasy owners going into twenty twenty six.
[39:27] Speaker 2: But it's also not a good pick because they had
[39:28] Speaker 2: the worst offensive line in the NFL. So like, I
[39:31] Speaker 2: don't care who you put back there. You could put
[39:33] Speaker 2: like the reincarnation of Jim Brown behind Ashton Genty and
[39:37] Speaker 2: they're still probably not going to be very effective because
[39:39] Speaker 2: they can't block. So until they can block, it doesn't
[39:41] Speaker 2: really matter.
[39:43] Speaker 1: Landon Dickerson like his teammate Lane Johnson indicated on Instagram
[39:49] Speaker 1: that he will be returning to the twenty twenty six
[39:52] Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. We noted a couple of weeks ago that
[39:55] Speaker 1: both offensive linemen were reportedly considering not coming back. I
[39:59] Speaker 1: think think everyone was a little upset about Jeff Stoutlin,
[40:02] Speaker 1: their offensive line coach, leaving the building. In the end,
[40:05] Speaker 1: these are two of the best at what they do,
[40:08] Speaker 1: huge competitors, and they want to come back and they
[40:11] Speaker 1: will be back. So great news for the Eagles. There
[40:14] Speaker 1: more offensive line news in the NFC East. The Commanders
[40:18] Speaker 1: have released Tyler Biattish. Look, this is a story maybe
[40:22] Speaker 1: most podcasts wouldn't hit. I was very surprised by this though.
[40:26] Speaker 1: He was a guy who, you know, I know, Pro
[40:28] Speaker 1: Bowls don't mean that much, but made a Pro Bowl
[40:30] Speaker 1: a couple of years ago and started virtually every game
[40:33] Speaker 1: for the Commanders since he took over. As I dug
[40:36] Speaker 1: into it, it's maybe a little less surprising. He had
[40:40] Speaker 1: what's in an injury in late last season, a leg
[40:44] Speaker 1: ankle injury that I'm not really sure how serious it was,
[40:48] Speaker 1: and this release maybe indicates to me it's a little
[40:51] Speaker 1: more serious. If he was healthy. You know, he's not
[40:54] Speaker 1: even thirty yet. He's put up a lot of good
[40:56] Speaker 1: starts in the NFL. He'd be top fifty in my
[40:59] Speaker 1: Top one one free agents. But the uncertainty about the
[41:02] Speaker 1: injury makes me just want to like find out a
[41:05] Speaker 1: little more. But another hole for the commanders to fill.
[41:07] Speaker 1: They have a lot of holes to fill.
[41:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, And it wasn't like money really motivated all that
[41:13] Speaker 2: much of it when they have a lot of cap
[41:14] Speaker 2: space to work with anyway, and they have holes to fill,
[41:17] Speaker 2: like you said.
[41:18] Speaker 1: And they only saved two point six million dollars, but
[41:21] Speaker 1: they do save a lot of Ultimately, you are paying
[41:23] Speaker 1: the guy a lot of money, and I think he
[41:24] Speaker 1: was doing like eight million dollars. So although the fact
[41:28] Speaker 1: that they released him makes me worry about possibly getting.
[41:31] Speaker 2: Him, yes, because maybe you know, for lack of a
[41:34] Speaker 2: better phrase, but he's he may be considered like damaged
[41:36] Speaker 2: goods as a free agent now and maybe they were
[41:38] Speaker 2: looking at that and trying to get ahead of it,
[41:40] Speaker 2: and so it makes sense. But you know what else, Greg,
[41:42] Speaker 2: I'm sitting in the suite tonight and I'm watching the
[41:44] Speaker 2: ticker go by, and Greg's Top one oh one free
[41:48] Speaker 2: agents are scrolling by, yes, and I think on a
[41:52] Speaker 2: separate podcast, you and I are going to have to
[41:54] Speaker 2: have some chats because I got some gripes, oh like
[41:57] Speaker 2: put like putting Kate out in.
[41:58] Speaker 3: The head of Isaiah. Likely I got some grip so
[42:00] Speaker 3: we need to discuss.
[42:02] Speaker 1: I wish I wish I had you on more for
[42:06] Speaker 1: those gripes, like before I put it out, because what
[42:09] Speaker 1: is it going to do me now? But no, I do.
[42:11] Speaker 1: I do want to explore that space another time. But yeah,
[42:14] Speaker 1: a lot of people, a lot of people got on
[42:16] Speaker 1: me about the Kida and rank.
[42:19] Speaker 3: It's very high.
[42:21] Speaker 1: Will Anderson is going to be a priority for the Houston,
[42:25] Speaker 1: texans Ian Rappaport reported today that he thinks like long
[42:28] Speaker 1: term extension will happen sooner than later. Not a shock,
[42:32] Speaker 1: but just interesting how they're kind of prioritizing things. Shoulder
[42:36] Speaker 1: Sanders hopes to one day get a long term contract
[42:39] Speaker 1: extension somewhere in the neighborhood of Will Anderson. That that's
[42:42] Speaker 1: going to be a tall order, but you never know.
[42:45] Speaker 1: But what he did do was somehow make this show
[42:49] Speaker 1: by a completely surprising choice of gift for Todd Monkin.
[42:54] Speaker 1: Let's listen to Todd Monkin with CBS this week.
[42:58] Speaker 7: In fact, for my birthday, I got this package. I
[43:01] Speaker 7: thought it was from my wife. It's like this package
[43:03] Speaker 7: and opens it up, it's like this porcelain like horsehead
[43:07] Speaker 7: and it's from Shador. He sent me a gift on
[43:09] Speaker 7: my birthday and I asked him, I said, what was
[43:13] Speaker 7: the meaning? He said, well, I just really liked it.
[43:15] Speaker 7: Should I got myself one. I said, well, great, Okay.
[43:20] Speaker 2: Off, first off, this is why you make the big bucks,
[43:24] Speaker 2: because I was a hell of a segue to get
[43:25] Speaker 2: to Shador Sanders there, thank you. And secondly, this is
[43:29] Speaker 2: a godfather asked gift that usually is ominous and means
[43:33] Speaker 2: bad things for your coach, and I think that went
[43:34] Speaker 2: completely over Shador's head.
[43:36] Speaker 3: But also there's so many things here.
[43:40] Speaker 2: Who like sees a porcelain horsehead and is like, wow,
[43:43] Speaker 2: I really like that. I want one, and I'm gonna
[43:45] Speaker 2: send one to my head coach for his birthday. He
[43:47] Speaker 2: has the best team around him to be aware of
[43:51] Speaker 2: these things and make them happen, even if they look
[43:53] Speaker 2: really strange to the rest of us.
[43:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, that was That was with my friends at Jonathan
[43:59] Speaker 1: Jones and Pete Prisco, over at CBS. They were not
[44:02] Speaker 1: expecting any of that to come out. I have a
[44:05] Speaker 1: lot of thoughts on this. Number one. I wish I
[44:08] Speaker 1: had the confidence and the generosity, not just in terms
[44:13] Speaker 1: of money, but actually just of spirit too, because he
[44:16] Speaker 1: had to think to do that. I don't think that's
[44:18] Speaker 1: a team of people sending the porcelain horset. Now he
[44:21] Speaker 1: has to tell them, hey can you send this to coach?
[44:24] Speaker 1: But he has to think of it. So that's that's
[44:26] Speaker 1: a generous spirit. But I think you got to have
[44:28] Speaker 1: a certain sort of self confidence. I don't know what
[44:32] Speaker 1: the right word would be, just that like, hey, I
[44:35] Speaker 1: like this porcelain horse, said so much. I'm buying this
[44:37] Speaker 1: thing and my coach would love it. And I have
[44:41] Speaker 1: the confidence to send my coach like presence in the
[44:45] Speaker 1: in the mail and it's a bizarre present. I love
[44:48] Speaker 1: it all. I want. I want to see it.
[44:50] Speaker 2: I think I want to see it too. And you
[44:52] Speaker 2: know what I think I need to start doing. I
[44:54] Speaker 2: need to start sending you gifts on your birthday that
[44:56] Speaker 2: are strange.
[44:59] Speaker 1: No, I actually think it raises the chance of the
[45:02] Speaker 1: sure starting this year by like five a gift well,
[45:06] Speaker 1: just because it just shows a level of connectedness. We
[45:09] Speaker 1: saw that they saw each other, that they liked each other,
[45:13] Speaker 1: I think from the pre draft process, and when they
[45:15] Speaker 1: saw each other again in Cleveland, they it's just a
[45:18] Speaker 1: it's just a fun bromance.
[45:19] Speaker 2: It's preseason week three and Todd Monkin has to decide
[45:23] Speaker 2: between Shador Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and whoever else they bring
[45:27] Speaker 2: in a quarterback for week one. And it's late at
[45:30] Speaker 2: night and it's a hot summer evening in Beria and
[45:34] Speaker 2: the sun is set and Todd's in his office all
[45:37] Speaker 2: by himself, and he's lit by one overhead light like
[45:40] Speaker 2: it's an interrogation room. And in that moment, he'll look
[45:42] Speaker 2: across the room to the porcelain horse head he decreatively
[45:46] Speaker 2: placed in the corner, and he'll say, I know who's
[45:48] Speaker 2: my guy.
[45:49] Speaker 1: That's absolutely right. That was beautiful. I'm really glad I
[45:54] Speaker 1: put that in the show. Now everything feels like an
[45:56] Speaker 1: anti climax after that. Finally, the the NFLPA scores, the
[46:03] Speaker 1: grades that they have for all the organizations came out today,
[46:06] Speaker 1: not officially because it was ruled that they weren't officially
[46:10] Speaker 1: allowed to do this this year, but they were allowed
[46:13] Speaker 1: to do the surveys and create the grades, they just
[46:18] Speaker 1: weren't allowed to release them publicly, So of course it
[46:21] Speaker 1: ends up getting out. Kayln Kaylor, who's one of the
[46:24] Speaker 1: very best in the business, does it for ESPN. It
[46:26] Speaker 1: was her Super Bowl today. I saw someone say that
[46:29] Speaker 1: and she retweeted it. Getting all these NFLPA grades out
[46:34] Speaker 1: and the Steelers come in dead last. Thought that was
[46:38] Speaker 1: interesting in terms of their facilities, in terms of how
[46:42] Speaker 1: they take care of their players and the families. That
[46:44] Speaker 1: was interesting. Joe Shane was the lowest ranked general manager.
[46:50] Speaker 1: And they're not like evaluating moves. It's more like they're
[46:53] Speaker 1: evaluating I think the players, their relationship with the front office,
[46:56] Speaker 1: how they feel about their front office. So that was
[46:59] Speaker 1: very interesting to me. The Dolphins were the best ranked
[47:02] Speaker 1: team for the third straight year. The Vikings were second.
[47:05] Speaker 1: They were always near the top. So the Dolphins take
[47:08] Speaker 1: care of their players like it is a well run
[47:11] Speaker 1: like ownership had like an a there, Everything had an
[47:13] Speaker 1: a there. And the Commanders since Josh Harris took over,
[47:17] Speaker 1: has zoomed from the very bottom of the league to
[47:20] Speaker 1: up to third. Seattle and Jacksonville were also in the
[47:23] Speaker 1: top five. Bottom five I mentioned Steelers were dead last,
[47:26] Speaker 1: Cardinals were second to last. They're always near the bottom.
[47:29] Speaker 1: Michael Bidwell ranked as the worst owner in the league.
[47:33] Speaker 1: The Browns, the Bucks, and the Bengals were also near
[47:37] Speaker 1: the bottom. And one thing that really struck me shook
[47:41] Speaker 1: this year, you know, they also ranked the coaches. The
[47:45] Speaker 1: lowest ranked coach period was Kevin Stefanski. That's interesting by
[47:49] Speaker 1: his players, okay, and the lowest graded coach in the
[47:53] Speaker 1: entire league that didn't get fired. I think he was
[47:56] Speaker 1: fourth or fifth lowest overall, but the other four had
[47:58] Speaker 1: gotten fired. Of course the fans got the job immediately.
[48:01] Speaker 1: Was Jim Harbaugh with a C.
[48:04] Speaker 2: I could see that actually, this is the Harball thing
[48:07] Speaker 2: is something that I wondered about when he jumped from
[48:09] Speaker 2: Michigan back to the NFL. I wondered if his style,
[48:12] Speaker 2: or you could describe it as shtick, may not wear
[48:15] Speaker 2: well on his players after a while at the NFL level,
[48:17] Speaker 2: just because it's a new generation who knows if it's
[48:19] Speaker 2: going to work out or not. They have been successful,
[48:22] Speaker 2: and I would love to see these grades correlate more
[48:26] Speaker 2: to success on the field, like the Dolphins, for example,
[48:29] Speaker 2: but not super surprised about Harbaugh not getting a very
[48:33] Speaker 2: high grade.
[48:34] Speaker 3: His demeanor in the way he does things are just
[48:35] Speaker 3: a little different.
[48:38] Speaker 1: And not like the Steelers. Being last is a tough look.
[48:43] Speaker 1: Three of the bottom five were kind of the old
[48:47] Speaker 1: family owned teams Bengals, Cardinals, Steelers, you know that don't
[48:54] Speaker 1: have that huge amount of cash that maybe some other
[48:58] Speaker 1: organizations do that we're in there.
[49:00] Speaker 3: All the Browns do, and they're low down.
[49:01] Speaker 1: The Browns do, and they they spend their money on players.
[49:05] Speaker 1: So I don't know what's going on.
[49:06] Speaker 2: Must be how they treat families. And maybe like the food,
[49:08] Speaker 2: oh the food got better.
[49:10] Speaker 3: I don't know. I always enjoyed breakfast and lunch there.
[49:13] Speaker 1: That was charging into the off season, presented by Apple Card.
[49:16] Speaker 1: Apply for Apple Cart in the Wild app today. Start
[49:19] Speaker 1: earning daily cash back on all your game day purchases,
[49:22] Speaker 1: from tickets to tailgate munchies to merch subject to credit approval.
[49:26] Speaker 1: All right, let's take a break. It shook hang out
[49:28] Speaker 1: for one second. What we're gonna do. We're gonna take
[49:30] Speaker 1: a break. On the other side, We're gonna listen to
[49:32] Speaker 1: a couple interviews that Jordan and I did before I
[49:35] Speaker 1: left town. With the Panthers general manager and head coach.
[49:40] Speaker 1: And on the back end of that, we're gonna say
[49:44] Speaker 1: goodbye and we're gonna tell you the trend that officially
[49:49] Speaker 1: ended as of Thursday night during the NFL combine. Yes,
[49:54] Speaker 1: NFL has killed an entire youth trend, and we'll tell
[49:58] Speaker 1: you what it is. At the very end, we are
[50:08] Speaker 1: here with the general manager of the Carolina Panthers, Dan Morgan,
[50:12] Speaker 1: coming off a season where frankly, we just loved watching
[50:16] Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers play at the end of the year,
[50:18] Speaker 1: and you kind of are completing the triumvirate. We've had
[50:21] Speaker 1: Brent Tillis on the show we had, so.
[50:25] Speaker 5: You know, we talked about it. You vouched for him,
[50:28] Speaker 5: and I was like, I don't know Brandt super well,
[50:30] Speaker 5: so you know, would he be good to have on
[50:32] Speaker 5: one of our Capsules series. He killed it, He did great.
[50:35] Speaker 5: You called the shop though, you totally he said he would.
[50:38] Speaker 4: He's a great dude and super valuable to me.
[50:41] Speaker 5: And we had Dave Canalis last year sitting in the
[50:44] Speaker 5: very seat that you're sitting in now, So it's like
[50:46] Speaker 5: it felt only right, you know, because you three are
[50:49] Speaker 5: are quite the triangle of friendship. Also, you hear stories
[50:53] Speaker 5: about how well you get along despite very different backgrounds
[50:57] Speaker 5: and and sort of like very different philosophies that all
[51:01] Speaker 5: sort of mesh together because they compliment each other. Yeah,
[51:04] Speaker 5: what's it been like sort of building that decision making
[51:09] Speaker 5: I want to say circle, but it's a triangle.
[51:11] Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's been fun.
[51:12] Speaker 8: I mean it always helps when the people you work
[51:16] Speaker 8: with they're not just your workmates, they're your friends. They
[51:19] Speaker 8: are people you enjoy coming to work every day and
[51:22] Speaker 8: working with. And we all at the end of the day,
[51:26] Speaker 8: we just want to win. You know, we want to win.
[51:29] Speaker 8: We want to be happy and come in after wins.
[51:32] Speaker 8: So you know, we work our butts off and you
[51:36] Speaker 8: know we put we put the work in every single day,
[51:38] Speaker 8: but we enjoy every single day and we don't take
[51:41] Speaker 8: it for granted.
[51:42] Speaker 1: What was the feeling like after the playoff loss, which
[51:45] Speaker 1: you know is always a really difficult day, and it yeah,
[51:48] Speaker 1: it seems yeah season, but on the other hand, it
[51:51] Speaker 1: was like, you guys played really well against this team
[51:54] Speaker 1: that a lot of us thought you had a really
[51:56] Speaker 1: good chance to win the Super Bowl, and you're right there.
[51:58] Speaker 1: So I guess take us through with that that day
[52:02] Speaker 1: that the emotions were like.
[52:03] Speaker 8: Coming off of that game, disappointed. I think everybody was disappointed.
[52:08] Speaker 8: You know, we felt like we could have won that game.
[52:09] Speaker 8: Obviously we didn't, so I could have, would have, should have,
[52:14] Speaker 8: you know, but I think it gives us.
[52:16] Speaker 4: Something to build on.
[52:18] Speaker 8: I think that we're headed in the right direction as
[52:20] Speaker 8: a franchise. I think the players in the building and
[52:23] Speaker 8: the building in general, you know, we have that belief
[52:26] Speaker 8: the cultures shifting to a winning mindset and you have
[52:30] Speaker 8: to have that. If you don't have the winning mindset,
[52:33] Speaker 8: you don't.
[52:34] Speaker 4: Have a chance.
[52:34] Speaker 8: So do everybody's pulling in the same direction, excited about
[52:39] Speaker 8: the future, and you know.
[52:40] Speaker 4: We got to go earn it now.
[52:42] Speaker 8: We got to put the work in, you know, from
[52:44] Speaker 8: a front office perspective, coaches, players, we got to work
[52:48] Speaker 8: and we got to go earn it.
[52:50] Speaker 5: When I think a lot about what the Panthers, what
[52:52] Speaker 5: you guys did this season, and it was like a
[52:54] Speaker 5: joy ride for a lot of it, right, I.
[52:57] Speaker 1: Mean they were like a roller coaster for yeah, like.
[53:00] Speaker 5: Maybe the safety bar is not on either at this point,
[53:03] Speaker 5: because sometimes you just felt, how are this how is
[53:05] Speaker 5: this team doing this? They're still in a rebuild, you know,
[53:07] Speaker 5: yet you know, yes, you have some veteran guys, and
[53:10] Speaker 5: I think the floor was lifted, especially by some of
[53:13] Speaker 5: the great coaching on both sides of the ball in
[53:15] Speaker 5: certain positions. We loved the outside corners tandem and and
[53:18] Speaker 5: just how they were getting the most out of everyone
[53:21] Speaker 5: on the interior with the safeties, and and just like
[53:23] Speaker 5: because of how well they were playing. We loved watching
[53:26] Speaker 5: just the floor lift and pockets all over this roster.
[53:30] Speaker 5: But now you've got to keep tweaking and adjusting despite
[53:34] Speaker 5: the fact that that was such an adrenaline roller coaster.
[53:37] Speaker 4: As you said, how do you.
[53:38] Speaker 5: How do you like sift through the spikes essentially and
[53:42] Speaker 5: gets really what is needed to keep filling.
[53:45] Speaker 8: You know, I think the biggest thing for us in
[53:48] Speaker 8: the roster building is we gotta we got to stick
[53:52] Speaker 8: to our standards. Yeah, we gotta be disciplined in our approach,
[53:57] Speaker 8: you know, and we got to bring our type of
[53:59] Speaker 8: guys and we you know, we can't be competing against
[54:02] Speaker 8: the internet. You know, people want you to sign this
[54:05] Speaker 8: guy and there, Actually.
[54:07] Speaker 5: We can't be competing against the internet. Yeah, so sirs,
[54:10] Speaker 5: I'm looking at the content team right now, Like.
[54:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, from an in house film crew, like we are
[54:17] Speaker 1: a reality star right now.
[54:18] Speaker 4: I guess so that's not my style, but.
[54:22] Speaker 5: You were giving a great answer forgive us. We interrupt
[54:24] Speaker 5: each other a lot on this show, so.
[54:25] Speaker 4: It's fine, it's fine. I'm the same way. My add
[54:28] Speaker 4: kicks in as well.
[54:30] Speaker 8: But yeah, we yeah, we just you know, it's about
[54:33] Speaker 8: bringing the right players in, you know, to fit our culture,
[54:37] Speaker 8: bringing the right type of human being into into our
[54:40] Speaker 8: locker room. Because your culture really starts with the players.
[54:44] Speaker 8: You know, they are the culture. So as many players
[54:48] Speaker 8: we can bring in that not only have great personal character,
[54:52] Speaker 8: but they have a love for the game. They love
[54:54] Speaker 8: everything about the process. That's the type of guys we
[54:58] Speaker 8: want to bring in our building.
[55:00] Speaker 1: Do you think you need more firepower around Bryce Young
[55:04] Speaker 1: in terms of the offensive weapons.
[55:06] Speaker 8: I think we're I'm always going to feel like that.
[55:09] Speaker 8: You know, no matter how good we ever get, like,
[55:11] Speaker 8: we're never going to be satisfied here. We're always going
[55:14] Speaker 8: to be finding ways to get better, to grow and
[55:17] Speaker 8: evolve and just find ways to give us an edge.
[55:21] Speaker 8: You know, whether it's from a front office perspective, scouting, coaching,
[55:27] Speaker 8: you know, we're always going to be looking for those edges.
[55:29] Speaker 8: We're never going to feel like we've arrived. But that's
[55:33] Speaker 8: the type of mindset we need to have to get
[55:35] Speaker 8: to where we want to go, and not only get
[55:37] Speaker 8: there once, but to sustain it.
[55:39] Speaker 5: Dan, I love when you can watch a coach build
[55:43] Speaker 5: something like right out loud in front of everybody. Yeah,
[55:46] Speaker 5: And a lot of times that happens when a team
[55:48] Speaker 5: is figuring out how to maximize what it has as.
[55:51] Speaker 4: It goes through the course of the season.
[55:52] Speaker 5: It's not just game planning, it's also how do we
[55:55] Speaker 5: align pieces on the chess board essentially. Yeah, and like
[55:58] Speaker 5: your receips group and then the tight ends group together,
[56:02] Speaker 5: I'm just lump them all into a one big pool.
[56:04] Speaker 4: Here of pass catchers. Yeah.
[56:06] Speaker 5: You could see, especially when Jalen Koker came back, you
[56:09] Speaker 5: could see the layers or the intent of the layers
[56:12] Speaker 5: start to develop in this past game around Tedoro McMillan,
[56:17] Speaker 5: but then with Jalen as a really complimentary kind of
[56:21] Speaker 5: all over the field, trustworthy like weapon. And I guess
[56:25] Speaker 5: what's the next step of that, Like, what's the next
[56:27] Speaker 5: layer that we wish we could have gotten a chance
[56:30] Speaker 5: to see if maybe you guys kept going. But what
[56:32] Speaker 5: we want to see and what you want to see
[56:34] Speaker 5: this coming season?
[56:35] Speaker 8: Yeah, I think to answer your question, I think, you know,
[56:39] Speaker 8: develop guys still developing, you know, I think nowadays I think,
[56:44] Speaker 8: you know, the outside, you know, not us on the inside,
[56:47] Speaker 8: but on the outside, we're so quick to just throw
[56:50] Speaker 8: players under the bus. And like, I'm looking forward to
[56:53] Speaker 8: seeing Xavior Leged develop. You know, he's he's not a
[56:58] Speaker 8: finished product. You know, he's still developing and he's getting better.
[57:02] Speaker 8: So we're here to support him. The coaches are here
[57:05] Speaker 8: to support him, and you know, just keep developing our guys.
[57:09] Speaker 8: And we believed in these guys. We drafted them for
[57:12] Speaker 8: a reason. We know they have it in them. But
[57:15] Speaker 8: we're not giving up on them. They're they're are guys,
[57:19] Speaker 8: They're We're gonna win with these guys, and I have
[57:22] Speaker 8: full confidence that that they're gonna you know, they're gonna
[57:25] Speaker 8: turn the corner and they're gonna be what we thought.
[57:27] Speaker 1: How do you feel about your center kid May's potentially
[57:32] Speaker 1: coming back.
[57:33] Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a possibility.
[57:34] Speaker 8: You know, we've been talking to his agent and staying
[57:37] Speaker 8: in contact with him, and you know, from my seat,
[57:40] Speaker 8: you know, we these guys earned the right to go
[57:43] Speaker 8: out and and you know, figure out what their market
[57:45] Speaker 8: looks like, and you know, maybe somebody's gonna pay him
[57:48] Speaker 8: a boatload of money, and you know, they earn that right,
[57:51] Speaker 8: and you know we're going to stay in contact with
[57:54] Speaker 8: them and at the end of the day, we'll see
[57:55] Speaker 8: where the chips fall.
[57:57] Speaker 1: Is it a bit of a two pronged attack too,
[58:00] Speaker 1: with the injury to Ikya khanmu at the at the
[58:02] Speaker 1: end of last season in his offensive line, you know,
[58:05] Speaker 1: because of that focus for you.
[58:07] Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean that's that's the NFL, that's life like.
[58:10] Speaker 8: Things are going to happen, and you know we have
[58:13] Speaker 8: to plan accordingly. And you know that's why I always
[58:16] Speaker 8: talk about drafting the best player available, because you never
[58:19] Speaker 8: know what position you're going to get an injury at
[58:21] Speaker 8: at any given moment in the season. So you know,
[58:25] Speaker 8: we're about drafting the best football players and not so
[58:28] Speaker 8: so much drafting for need. You know, unless it's equal,
[58:31] Speaker 8: then yeah, I'll go with the need. But yeah, that's
[58:34] Speaker 8: that's kind of what our philosophy is.
[58:37] Speaker 5: How do you balance on I'm thinking about the defensive
[58:39] Speaker 5: line too, and obviously I know you guys want to
[58:40] Speaker 5: boke up the pass, rush Nicks court and really came alive.
[58:43] Speaker 5: Was fun to watch. Oh yeah, such explosiveness. It just
[58:47] Speaker 5: jumped off the screen. But obviously you want to build
[58:49] Speaker 5: out that group and and you have some veterans on
[58:52] Speaker 5: that you've had on the interior, you added free agents
[58:55] Speaker 5: on the interior around Derek Brown. How do you continue
[58:58] Speaker 5: to understand that was a very real part of your
[59:00] Speaker 5: team building model last year year before continue to.
[59:03] Speaker 4: Draft and develop there.
[59:05] Speaker 5: How do you balance that line that you're walking because
[59:08] Speaker 5: you definitely are going to want to get some new
[59:10] Speaker 5: people eventually to.
[59:11] Speaker 4: Take over it.
[59:12] Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you know when I took over and
[59:15] Speaker 8: just talking to my team, like about what we want
[59:17] Speaker 8: it to be about. It's about winning the offensive line
[59:21] Speaker 8: of scrimmage and the defensive line of scrimmage. Like we
[59:24] Speaker 8: want to dominate both sides of the ball. And you know,
[59:26] Speaker 8: in order to do that, you have to infuse talent
[59:29] Speaker 8: into that and you know, young talent guys that we
[59:32] Speaker 8: can grow with. And you saw last year we drafted
[59:35] Speaker 8: Nick Nick Gordon, we drafted Princely. You know, both those
[59:39] Speaker 8: guys were excited about their future and we're just going
[59:43] Speaker 8: to keep adding, keep building brick by brick, and you know,
[59:47] Speaker 8: I think at the end of the day then you
[59:48] Speaker 8: know it'll be where we want it to be.
[59:50] Speaker 1: Do you think you'll be talking contract extension with Bryce
[59:55] Speaker 1: Young before the fifth year option comes up?
[59:59] Speaker 8: You know, something that we have to talk about internally
[1:00:02] Speaker 8: and figure out.
[1:00:03] Speaker 4: You know.
[1:00:04] Speaker 8: Right now, you know, we're just happy Bryce as our quarterback.
[1:00:08] Speaker 8: We're we're so excited that, you know, the way he's developing,
[1:00:13] Speaker 8: not only as a player, but as a as a man.
[1:00:16] Speaker 8: You know, he's he's growing up right in front of
[1:00:18] Speaker 8: our eyes, and he's getting better every single day, every
[1:00:21] Speaker 8: single every single game. So we're excited he's our quarterback
[1:00:25] Speaker 8: and you know, contractually that'll figure itself out.
[1:00:28] Speaker 1: Appreciate all the time, Dan and another.
[1:00:32] Speaker 5: Gracious your time sitting down with you for a while.
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: I really appreciate it. Thanks for having me one of
[1:00:37] Speaker 1: my favorites to watch on the field back in the
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: day as well, So you know, keep an eye out
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: that the linebackers appreciate that. Picking up Dan Morgan GM
[1:00:44] Speaker 1: of the Panthers, we are here with head coach of
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers, head coach of the NFC South champion
[1:00:52] Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers for the second straight year, right in this
[1:00:55] Speaker 1: spot at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Congratulations on the division ampionship.
[1:01:00] Speaker 1: We were talking about the atmosphere on that day that
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: that Jordan was there in the playoffs. How did it
[1:01:07] Speaker 1: feel to kind of bring that type of football energy
[1:01:10] Speaker 1: back to Carolina.
[1:01:11] Speaker 9: We're super proud we came in. You know.
[1:01:14] Speaker 10: Our goal was, you know, Dan and I talking is like,
[1:01:16] Speaker 10: let's build a Let's build a team that this that
[1:01:18] Speaker 10: this fan base can be proud of, you know, and
[1:01:20] Speaker 10: it's it's the Carolinas, you know, it's South Carolina, North Carolina.
[1:01:23] Speaker 10: I was in Myrtle Beach last weekend at a seven
[1:01:26] Speaker 10: on seven tournament with my son, and you know, just
[1:01:28] Speaker 10: the outpouring of excitement, you know, especially in your football environment,
[1:01:32] Speaker 10: you know, from parents. That's what I think is unique
[1:01:35] Speaker 10: about what's happening in our community is I'm forty four,
[1:01:38] Speaker 10: and so most of the people that are around my
[1:01:41] Speaker 10: age were like prime time like original Panthers fans, nineteen
[1:01:47] Speaker 10: ninety five PSL owners, you know, I remember nineteen ninety five.
[1:01:50] Speaker 10: I'm I'm just starting high school. So people my age
[1:01:53] Speaker 10: were like right around that time where it's important to them,
[1:01:55] Speaker 10: you know, and so now their kids, our kids are
[1:01:58] Speaker 10: all growing up in this and so it's a it's
[1:02:01] Speaker 10: a really special time for us.
[1:02:02] Speaker 1: Were you more nervous during the fourth quarter of that
[1:02:06] Speaker 1: playoff game or watching the seven and seven your son?
[1:02:10] Speaker 5: Uh?
[1:02:10] Speaker 9: Definitely the playoff game.
[1:02:12] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I don't know.
[1:02:13] Speaker 5: I don't know what kind of a coach parent or
[1:02:15] Speaker 5: involved parent are you with the football? I mean, I
[1:02:17] Speaker 5: would feel like the coach would want to try to
[1:02:18] Speaker 5: get you involved a little bit, like you.
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: Got you got control a little bit when you're coaching
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: if you just watch, well.
[1:02:27] Speaker 10: I just appreciate the people that all these people, this
[1:02:31] Speaker 10: is what they do for fun, you know, and they
[1:02:33] Speaker 10: have jobs and they you know, haul themselves and a
[1:02:36] Speaker 10: bunch of equipment all around the Carolinas, you know, playing
[1:02:39] Speaker 10: these tournaments, and so I just I just appreciate them
[1:02:42] Speaker 10: for the time that they spend with our kids. And uh,
[1:02:45] Speaker 10: however they coach and whatever plays they're calling, it's just
[1:02:48] Speaker 10: like this is a good thing. This is time while
[1:02:50] Speaker 10: spent and they're investing in our kids.
[1:02:52] Speaker 5: But it's okay if you also make mental notes too,
[1:02:54] Speaker 5: just saying but you know, so that the atmosphere was
[1:02:59] Speaker 5: so powerful as you guys as a team like and
[1:03:02] Speaker 5: and the community everyone met the moment really well, coming
[1:03:05] Speaker 5: in as percepted, underdog and all of that, and then
[1:03:08] Speaker 5: and then really taking it right to the to the
[1:03:11] Speaker 5: end there. But that's sort of like a roller coaster
[1:03:14] Speaker 5: all season with you guys, and and some of those
[1:03:16] Speaker 5: really high highs emotionally and then some of the frustrating
[1:03:19] Speaker 5: losses and and we you know, we've had several of
[1:03:21] Speaker 5: your of your friends and co workers on the show.
[1:03:24] Speaker 5: We talked to Brent Tillis, We've we talked to Dan
[1:03:26] Speaker 5: Morgan as well about like, how do you find what's
[1:03:29] Speaker 5: stable and sustainable through all of that joy ride of
[1:03:34] Speaker 5: a feeling all around everything.
[1:03:36] Speaker 10: Yeah, well, it's about belief and starts internally and as
[1:03:42] Speaker 10: we continue to prove to our players that if we
[1:03:44] Speaker 10: play a certain style of football, we can play with anybody.
[1:03:47] Speaker 10: And that holds true for any of us in the NFL,
[1:03:49] Speaker 10: and we all care about the same thing. We all
[1:03:51] Speaker 10: care about taking care of the ball, creating explosive plays
[1:03:54] Speaker 10: or minimizing them, and those critical moments at the end
[1:03:57] Speaker 10: of half are into games and and we're all sick
[1:04:00] Speaker 10: about it, But it's the teams that pay attention to
[1:04:02] Speaker 10: it and believe that you can get it done. And
[1:04:04] Speaker 10: that's what I saw happen with our group is throughout
[1:04:06] Speaker 10: the season, I could feel the belief coming from our
[1:04:08] Speaker 10: players and expecting to win on a weekly basis. And
[1:04:12] Speaker 10: you know, now it's time to look at the inconsistencies
[1:04:14] Speaker 10: of what happened, you know, and to see if we
[1:04:16] Speaker 10: can really capture that.
[1:04:18] Speaker 9: And it happens in practice.
[1:04:20] Speaker 10: It starts when these players come back in April, and
[1:04:23] Speaker 10: we have to take every single day. This is the
[1:04:26] Speaker 10: day that could win us that game, this is a
[1:04:28] Speaker 10: day that could lose us that game. And can we
[1:04:29] Speaker 10: be that urgent about their work with that we do?
[1:04:32] Speaker 5: You kind of made a little news today you mentioned
[1:04:35] Speaker 5: that when you're in your press conference at Brad and Sick,
[1:04:38] Speaker 5: is it going to be calling plays this year? You know,
[1:04:40] Speaker 5: there's been whispers around the league that he was really
[1:04:43] Speaker 5: working at this, like working at maybe one day becoming
[1:04:46] Speaker 5: someone who could take that mantle on in such a
[1:04:49] Speaker 5: significant way. And it's a personal thing to call plays
[1:04:53] Speaker 5: and it's a powerful thing to be the person that
[1:04:55] Speaker 5: does that. So what like, what is it about him
[1:04:59] Speaker 5: that you said, Okay, this is the year that you're
[1:05:01] Speaker 5: gonna do it. What is about you that you said
[1:05:03] Speaker 5: this is the year I'm gonna let this go? And
[1:05:06] Speaker 5: what does a Brad Ezach offense look like?
[1:05:08] Speaker 1: Uh?
[1:05:08] Speaker 10: Two things came to mind really with the decision. Is
[1:05:11] Speaker 10: is our ability to continue to push our processes forward offensively.
[1:05:15] Speaker 10: And Brad's been my primary architect for what we do
[1:05:18] Speaker 10: from an offensive standpoint, tying the run game and the
[1:05:21] Speaker 10: past game in together. And we've been doing that for
[1:05:23] Speaker 10: three years and and he works at it. You know,
[1:05:26] Speaker 10: he's he's such a hard worker, He's dedicated to it.
[1:05:29] Speaker 10: He's principled, and he knows the philosophy of what I want,
[1:05:32] Speaker 10: what we want for our Panthers offense. So felt really
[1:05:36] Speaker 10: confident to give him that opportunity to do it. As
[1:05:39] Speaker 10: far as readiness goes, you know, I was asked this
[1:05:42] Speaker 10: when I first became a coordinator in Tampa. It's like,
[1:05:44] Speaker 10: how do you know that you're ready? It's like, well,
[1:05:46] Speaker 10: I'm as ready as I'm going to be. And I
[1:05:48] Speaker 10: feel that about Brad. You know, this is this is
[1:05:50] Speaker 10: a time to do that. And he's he's the he's
[1:05:52] Speaker 10: been the sounding board for me. He's been in my ear,
[1:05:54] Speaker 10: you know, has been calling plays for the last couple
[1:05:56] Speaker 10: of years, and and as we've laid this foundation, I
[1:05:59] Speaker 10: believe Brad will take us the next step and we'll
[1:06:02] Speaker 10: be able to continue to build off of it because
[1:06:04] Speaker 10: of his report with the players as well. The other
[1:06:07] Speaker 10: side of it was an opportunity for me to continue
[1:06:09] Speaker 10: to affect the culture of what we're doing, the play
[1:06:11] Speaker 10: style in general, from offense, defense and special teams, how
[1:06:15] Speaker 10: we do things in the building, a strength and conditioning,
[1:06:17] Speaker 10: athletic training, all of these things, how we treat each other,
[1:06:20] Speaker 10: and what we're after, the possibilities of what we could become.
[1:06:23] Speaker 10: I know that I can affect our culture in a
[1:06:26] Speaker 10: more powerful way by being available that way, whereas you
[1:06:29] Speaker 10: can imagine coming into it all hands on deck. Let's
[1:06:32] Speaker 10: get this offense to a place where we have a foundation.
[1:06:35] Speaker 10: And I believe we have that foundation and now it's
[1:06:37] Speaker 10: time to continue to build off of it.
[1:06:39] Speaker 1: So we talked to Dan Morgan, your GM, and we
[1:06:42] Speaker 1: know that Bryce is going to be your quarterback. Of
[1:06:44] Speaker 1: course in the contract, will you all will figure that out,
[1:06:48] Speaker 1: But I'm curious what you want him to improve on
[1:06:51] Speaker 1: like specifically and in terms of his game, because I
[1:06:54] Speaker 1: feel like he was almost a symbol of your team
[1:06:57] Speaker 1: sometimes at times like the great week were great, And
[1:07:01] Speaker 1: one thing I think gets misunderstood with him is like, man,
[1:07:04] Speaker 1: if you put just a reel together, like, he is
[1:07:06] Speaker 1: not afraid to put that ball in a tough spot.
[1:07:08] Speaker 1: And his high level throws are as high levels as
[1:07:10] Speaker 1: almost anyone. But there were down weeks for him too,
[1:07:13] Speaker 1: And so what do you think he needs to get
[1:07:15] Speaker 1: better onto it to improve those down weeks.
[1:07:17] Speaker 10: Yeah, just what I'm proud of what he did this
[1:07:20] Speaker 10: year is just mastering the operations of what we're doing
[1:07:23] Speaker 10: and getting us to the line of scrimmage so he
[1:07:25] Speaker 10: can make great decisions for us. He did an excellent
[1:07:28] Speaker 10: job of that this year, and I want him to
[1:07:31] Speaker 10: be able to continue to build off of that, so
[1:07:32] Speaker 10: he can make decisions at the line of scrimmage and
[1:07:35] Speaker 10: take advantage of things that he's done throughout the season
[1:07:38] Speaker 10: by whether it's coverage, blitzes, fronts, things to take advantage of.
[1:07:42] Speaker 10: So let's keep building on that part of it. The
[1:07:45] Speaker 10: consistency piece, which is his mantra, that's what he's after,
[1:07:49] Speaker 10: will continue to allow him to find that success. We
[1:07:52] Speaker 10: want to replicate those special games. While there's different degrees
[1:07:57] Speaker 10: of defenses that you face that create different channallenges. I
[1:08:01] Speaker 10: know that's what's out there for us, and so I
[1:08:02] Speaker 10: want to continue to grow that way. What he's done
[1:08:06] Speaker 10: a great job of as a leader is, you know,
[1:08:07] Speaker 10: as you can imagine, he is the cagey vet. You know,
[1:08:11] Speaker 10: he is the elderly statesman in a room of rookies
[1:08:15] Speaker 10: and second year players, you know, and and he embraces that.
[1:08:19] Speaker 10: He embraces that role to come to work with consistency,
[1:08:22] Speaker 10: to grind, to do all those things. So I'm excited
[1:08:25] Speaker 10: for us to get back together in April at some
[1:08:26] Speaker 10: point and to just continue to push that forward.
[1:08:29] Speaker 5: Do you know one of the most fun things about
[1:08:31] Speaker 5: watching what you guys did this year. It wasn't for
[1:08:33] Speaker 5: me like the highs and then how you recovered from
[1:08:36] Speaker 5: the lows and all of those things, but you guys
[1:08:39] Speaker 5: like really worked out loud, like you problem solved and
[1:08:42] Speaker 5: you could see it on the field what problems you
[1:08:45] Speaker 5: were trying to solve from week to week. And specifically
[1:08:48] Speaker 5: want to talk about your passing game and your skill guys,
[1:08:51] Speaker 5: because especially when Jalen came back. Ted McMillan had a
[1:08:54] Speaker 5: great season, as we know, and as when Jalen Koger
[1:08:57] Speaker 5: came back. You could start to see you and I
[1:09:00] Speaker 5: suppose because you guys are working together on this start
[1:09:03] Speaker 5: to build in like some really interesting layers into your
[1:09:07] Speaker 5: passing game where there was depth to it, there was
[1:09:09] Speaker 5: math because we're creating more math, I think than previously with.
[1:09:13] Speaker 1: Some of those matchups.
[1:09:15] Speaker 5: What's the next step. Who becomes the third puzzle piece here,
[1:09:20] Speaker 5: whether he's on the roster or maybe you don't know yet,
[1:09:22] Speaker 5: And how does that take another step forward to continue
[1:09:26] Speaker 5: to build.
[1:09:27] Speaker 9: Depth to it. Yeah, well, first it's it's time on task.
[1:09:30] Speaker 10: And you know, Jalen Coker had an injury right at
[1:09:34] Speaker 10: the end of training camp and that set him out
[1:09:36] Speaker 10: for a little bit of time. So so thankful that
[1:09:40] Speaker 10: David Moore, a guy that I've been with the long time,
[1:09:41] Speaker 10: was able to step into the role for a while
[1:09:43] Speaker 10: for a couple of games. But there was a little
[1:09:46] Speaker 10: bit of a rotating, you know, just a rotation in
[1:09:50] Speaker 10: the wide receiver room because of who was and wasn't available.
[1:09:52] Speaker 10: We traded Adam Thielen, another guy that I loved and
[1:09:56] Speaker 10: so finding that chemistry took all of most of the
[1:09:59] Speaker 10: season to get to a place where we were really operating.
[1:10:02] Speaker 10: They were anticipating each other.
[1:10:03] Speaker 4: You know.
[1:10:04] Speaker 10: I'm excited for Xavier Lyget. I'm excited for the jump
[1:10:07] Speaker 10: and the leap that he's going to take this year.
[1:10:09] Speaker 10: Why do I say that it's because of the work
[1:10:11] Speaker 10: he puts into it. I've been a receivers coach. I
[1:10:15] Speaker 10: watch guys work on their craft. The ones who worked
[1:10:17] Speaker 10: the hardest, it happens for them. And he happens to
[1:10:20] Speaker 10: be six two and a half two thirty and runs
[1:10:22] Speaker 10: four three eight. And all of these things are going
[1:10:25] Speaker 10: to come in the chemistry and the trust that Bryce
[1:10:27] Speaker 10: has in him to continue to go to him in
[1:10:29] Speaker 10: critical downs, you know, and with the ups and downs
[1:10:32] Speaker 10: and the inconsistency that's all of us as a whole,
[1:10:34] Speaker 10: like we have to find consistency. But I'm really excited
[1:10:37] Speaker 10: for this group. I'm excited for Jimmy Horn to see
[1:10:40] Speaker 10: what he can do to add an explosive element to
[1:10:42] Speaker 10: what we're doing. And Bryce and Tremaine, a guy that
[1:10:45] Speaker 10: played on special teams, did the dirty work, made some
[1:10:48] Speaker 10: critical catches for us in different games this is a
[1:10:51] Speaker 10: really good group. Now, it's Dan in mind, it's our
[1:10:53] Speaker 10: job to find players we can add, whether that's free
[1:10:56] Speaker 10: agency or through the raft draft, to challenge that room
[1:11:00] Speaker 10: and to make it a really competitive position.
[1:11:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, another position that could be in transition. Rico Daddle
[1:11:05] Speaker 1: is a is a free agent for you, do you
[1:11:09] Speaker 1: expect that he would be back? And what are you
[1:11:11] Speaker 1: kind of looking for in that room specific?
[1:11:14] Speaker 10: Those are all things that we're talking about right now.
[1:11:15] Speaker 10: But it goes to that same room. You know, you
[1:11:18] Speaker 10: think about Jonathan Brooks coming back, Trevor Youten and what
[1:11:21] Speaker 10: an amazing player he was in college and did a
[1:11:23] Speaker 10: couple of things for us in the run game, and
[1:11:25] Speaker 10: I'm excited to see where he goes with it. But
[1:11:28] Speaker 10: that's definitely a position that we can also challenge. And uh,
[1:11:31] Speaker 10: we're going to give the ball to the angriest, most
[1:11:33] Speaker 10: explosive guy, and uh, that person could be on our roster,
[1:11:37] Speaker 10: it could be out there, and we're going to take
[1:11:39] Speaker 10: all those things considering.
[1:11:40] Speaker 1: Your anger, you know, like, if it's going to be
[1:11:42] Speaker 1: the angriest, how are you calculating anger?
[1:11:45] Speaker 10: It's just there's a violence to it. There's a there's
[1:11:47] Speaker 10: a way that the ball is supposed to be run
[1:11:48] Speaker 10: and that's what we're looking for.
[1:11:49] Speaker 5: Or take like an average Wednesday interacting with me, Greg,
[1:11:52] Speaker 5: and that's how you measure anger.
[1:11:54] Speaker 3: Sometimes as well.
[1:11:55] Speaker 1: I'd like I'd like to go through the whole how
[1:11:59] Speaker 1: about one. You know, you went through all the offensive
[1:12:00] Speaker 1: players before we let you go one one maybe defensive
[1:12:03] Speaker 1: younger player on the roster that you know, we have
[1:12:06] Speaker 1: an audience that, let's watches the whole league, so maybe
[1:12:09] Speaker 1: maybe someone that they're not as familiar with that you're
[1:12:11] Speaker 1: excited to maybe see grow in your defense in the
[1:12:15] Speaker 1: coming years.
[1:12:15] Speaker 9: Well, Nick s.
[1:12:16] Speaker 10: Gorton did a great job this year and was our
[1:12:19] Speaker 10: second round pick. Consistent, hard working, talented, huge, just a
[1:12:25] Speaker 10: really powerful player and I'm excited to see him continue
[1:12:28] Speaker 10: to expand his his tool belt. Trevin Wallace. We got
[1:12:32] Speaker 10: to get Trevin healthy. He's big and he's fast, and
[1:12:35] Speaker 10: you know he's been a stud just playing through different
[1:12:38] Speaker 10: things and managing that part of it. But I'm excited
[1:12:41] Speaker 10: to see Trevin get back out there. A guy that
[1:12:43] Speaker 10: probably doesn't get mentioned is Corey Thornton. He was he played,
[1:12:47] Speaker 10: he actually moved into the starting lineup and was injured
[1:12:51] Speaker 10: pretty quickly after that. But a guy that can play
[1:12:53] Speaker 10: multiple positions. He can play outside corner, he can play nickel,
[1:12:57] Speaker 10: and he's also played safety for US. A really versatile
[1:12:59] Speaker 10: player long and a really savvy football player. I'm excited
[1:13:03] Speaker 10: to see where he goes. And uh, probably the last
[1:13:05] Speaker 10: one I'll mention is Ben Martin Scott. Uh, you know,
[1:13:09] Speaker 10: contributed to special teams, but he's a rocket. He plays
[1:13:11] Speaker 10: with the right play style and you know, really excited
[1:13:14] Speaker 10: to see his development as an inside linebacker. If you can,
[1:13:17] Speaker 10: you know, give something to us.
[1:13:18] Speaker 1: I love this. You're doing homeworks for me for our
[1:13:20] Speaker 1: season previews.
[1:13:21] Speaker 5: Well, I'll tell you too. That's cool that you bring
[1:13:23] Speaker 5: up Corey because one of the top things I heard
[1:13:25] Speaker 5: out of any camp was how excited your defensive guys
[1:13:28] Speaker 5: were out of training camp this last year about Corey.
[1:13:31] Speaker 1: So that's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. Appreciate Dave Canalis
[1:13:36] Speaker 1: joining us for a second straight year. You know, I'm
[1:13:38] Speaker 1: not saying we were the cause of it, but a
[1:13:40] Speaker 1: nice bump up last year. And so this is what
[1:13:43] Speaker 1: my Wednesdays are. It can happen again that we talked
[1:13:45] Speaker 1: again next year and we're talking.
[1:13:47] Speaker 4: About even more wins.
[1:13:48] Speaker 10: Absolutely. I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious. So
[1:13:51] Speaker 10: you know, this is a good this is a good return.
[1:13:53] Speaker 10: Let's do it again next year.
[1:13:54] Speaker 1: Absolutely, thank you, Dave Canal. Thanks great to talk to
[1:13:57] Speaker 1: Dave Canalis and Dan Morgan was watching the combine coverage
[1:14:01] Speaker 1: and Canalis gave a very similar answer to Rich Eisen
[1:14:06] Speaker 1: and Daniel Jeremiah about the responsibility that Bryce Young has
[1:14:09] Speaker 1: taken at the line of scrimmage. How that's how he's
[1:14:11] Speaker 1: gonna win. It's kind of from the neck up. So
[1:14:15] Speaker 1: you know, I was gonna say, get your information first
[1:14:18] Speaker 1: from us, because we got it literally first, but the
[1:14:21] Speaker 1: show wasn't up, so that's a bad job by us,
[1:14:22] Speaker 1: I guess great interviews. Appreciate that. Nick, thank you for
[1:14:27] Speaker 1: hanging out. And I did want to note that as
[1:14:32] Speaker 1: of Thursday night, if it wasn't already over, you're not
[1:14:35] Speaker 1: allowed to say frame mogged ever again, not that you
[1:14:39] Speaker 1: were in the first place. Frame mogged is done?
[1:14:41] Speaker 3: What about maxing? Can I still use maxing with looks maxine?
[1:14:44] Speaker 1: Now? Nothing at that's gone?
[1:14:47] Speaker 2: Okay, good because I didn't use any of that and
[1:14:48] Speaker 2: I thought it was just unnecessary. But we can all
[1:14:50] Speaker 2: thank Kyle Hamilton for that, because he got frame mogged
[1:14:54] Speaker 2: during the NFL Combine by none other than Sunny Styles
[1:14:58] Speaker 2: and a comparison on the screen.
[1:15:00] Speaker 1: I mean, maybe it's just because I'm sensitive. I'm I'm
[1:15:02] Speaker 1: like a walking and getting frame mogged. I mean, anytime
[1:15:04] Speaker 1: I've ever been on the show with you shook, certainly.
[1:15:07] Speaker 1: But yes, for for those who you know, weren't watching
[1:15:10] Speaker 1: the program, Kyle Hamilton noted when they did the side
[1:15:13] Speaker 1: by side, you know, heightweight, speed, and they compared Kyle Hamilton,
[1:15:18] Speaker 1: who you would you would think would be, you know,
[1:15:20] Speaker 1: even faster than these these built behemoth at linebacker Sonny Styles. No,
[1:15:26] Speaker 1: even though Sunny Styles was so much bigger and stronger,
[1:15:30] Speaker 1: he was even faster than than Kyle Hamilton, who's who's
[1:15:33] Speaker 1: plenty of speedy. And yeah, he sent he sent a
[1:15:36] Speaker 1: tweet out to NFL Network and Rich Eisen that he
[1:15:39] Speaker 1: was getting frame mogged, and then the NFL social used
[1:15:42] Speaker 1: the word frame mogged. And actually I was really happy
[1:15:45] Speaker 1: because when that happened, that's when I knew it was over.
[1:15:48] Speaker 2: Yes, as soon as corporate America adopts any term, it
[1:15:53] Speaker 2: all ends very quickly.
[1:15:55] Speaker 3: It's like when it's like when.
[1:15:56] Speaker 2: Swag became like a very big thing or yolo, like
[1:15:59] Speaker 2: back ten to fifteen years ago and everyone was getting
[1:16:02] Speaker 2: their swag bags and everyone was saying yolo, and it
[1:16:04] Speaker 2: was dead from then too.
[1:16:05] Speaker 3: It went the way of vine unfortunately.
[1:16:08] Speaker 1: So we'll see. I mean, I yeah, it wasn't a
[1:16:11] Speaker 1: fan anyways. I am a fan of all the work
[1:16:13] Speaker 1: that you're going to be doing. Check out Nick Chuck's
[1:16:16] Speaker 1: All Combine Team. Now it comes out throughout the weekend.
[1:16:21] Speaker 3: Right now, it comes out after the weekend.
[1:16:23] Speaker 1: It'll be like, okay, because you were writing, you were
[1:16:25] Speaker 1: writing today, you're getting that work done. You're going to
[1:16:29] Speaker 1: do that as well throughout the weekend, and then the
[1:16:32] Speaker 1: big All Combine piece will come out at the very
[1:16:34] Speaker 1: end of it all and you're going to join the show.
[1:16:36] Speaker 1: Our next show will be on Sunday evening, so keep
[1:16:42] Speaker 1: an eye out for that. Thank you to Eric Roberts
[1:16:46] Speaker 1: for hanging out at what's probably a quiet Inglewood right now.
[1:16:52] Speaker 1: In terms of NFL media, it's going to be busy
[1:16:55] Speaker 1: though in Indianapolis. Have fun, Nick, and we'll be watching
[1:16:58] Speaker 1: the quarterbacks, the offensive lineman, running backs, all of it.
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: Over the weekend. We'll see a Sunday out
[1:17:06] Speaker 7: MHM
