[0:00] Speaker 1: Shotgun snap.
[0:01] Speaker 2: Looks to the end zone.
[0:02] Speaker 3: Now he wants to throw it up for grabs. He does.
[0:04] Speaker 3: It's intercepted. Did he keep his toes in? Did he
[0:08] Speaker 3: keep his toes in?
[0:09] Speaker 2: He did!
[0:09] Speaker 1: It's intercepted in the end zone.
[0:11] Speaker 3: Holy catfish! The third pick of the night by the Seahawks.
[0:18] Speaker 3: And it's Josh Jobe! He ran a better route than
[0:22] Speaker 3: the receiver. Chippy Tone on the end line, kept his
[0:26] Speaker 3: feet in and keeps the Patriots out of the end zone.
[0:31] Speaker 3: The coaches are going absolutely nuts in the booth next
[0:34] Speaker 3: to us.
[0:41] Speaker 4: Welcome to NFL Daily. That was Steve Rabel. That was
[0:45] Speaker 4: the Seattle Seahawks winning today. The kickoff game in very
[0:50] Speaker 4: similar fashion to the way they ended last season, at
[0:53] Speaker 4: least giving Steve Rabel a holy catfish call at the end,
[0:57] Speaker 4: dominating on defense, not so much on offense because they
[1:01] Speaker 4: had lost their quarterback, Sam Darnold, earlier in the game.
[1:04] Speaker 1: But I'm with Jordan Roderig.
[1:06] Speaker 4: We are talking about a regular season football game, and
[1:10] Speaker 4: we are still talking about this Seattle defense.
[1:13] Speaker 1: We'll get to the Darnold of it all.
[1:15] Speaker 4: And Drake May going interception, interception, interception in the fourth quarter.
[1:20] Speaker 4: And what a disastrous loss it is for New England.
[1:23] Speaker 4: But I know you, Jordan, and I know you just
[1:26] Speaker 4: want to start by giving some flowers to the defense
[1:30] Speaker 4: that won them the Super Bowl a year ago.
[1:33] Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely.
[1:34] Speaker 6: Notable about Drake May's three interceptions was per next gen,
[1:39] Speaker 6: all of them were on pass attempts of 15 plus yards.
[1:43] Speaker 6: And otherwise, when he threw underneath, which was really the
[1:45] Speaker 6: only thing that was working against this Seattle defense, the
[1:49] Speaker 6: way that they played, he was 22 for 25, 159
[1:53] Speaker 6: yards and a touchdown. So throwing middle to deep did
[1:56] Speaker 6: not work for Drake May because that's just what this
[1:59] Speaker 6: Seahawks defense does. Greg, I showed you my sheet. I
[2:02] Speaker 6: saved a card, a card entirely for Seattle's defense tonight
[2:06] Speaker 6: to see, to fill it up with moments where they
[2:09] Speaker 6: were simply exceptional defensively And I had one space left
[2:12] Speaker 6: and we were on the live stream getting ready. And
[2:14] Speaker 6: I said, Greg, I've got, it's a final drive for
[2:16] Speaker 6: the Patriots. I've got one spot left at the bottom
[2:19] Speaker 6: of my card and look what happens. Josh Jobe, just
[2:22] Speaker 6: exceptional body control to toe tap that in and come
[2:26] Speaker 6: up with the interception that sealed the game.
[2:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so many things about this game.
[2:31] Speaker 4: It was fascinating for the Patriots to be up 10
[2:35] Speaker 4: points with Sam Darnold going out on the fifth play
[2:38] Speaker 4: for the Seahawks offense with a hip injury. He did
[2:41] Speaker 4: not return. We'll break down what that could mean long-term
[2:44] Speaker 4: for the Seahawks later. We'll see what they say post-game.
[2:47] Speaker 4: We're taping this right after the game. They have a
[2:50] Speaker 4: touchdown lead with the ball, driving in the fourth quarter
[2:55] Speaker 4: to start. And that's when the interceptions happen. But I
[2:59] Speaker 4: want you to go through one or two of those
[3:01] Speaker 4: plays as we go. But I do think it's worth mentioning, like,
[3:06] Speaker 4: The first interception, the Nehemiah Pritchett interception is an absolutely
[3:12] Speaker 4: incredible individual play where Romeo Dobbs, who was a disaster
[3:16] Speaker 4: tonight for the Patriots, didn't make a great effort on it.
[3:19] Speaker 4: The Julian Love interception was an absolutely great play. And
[3:22] Speaker 4: then that last interception, it's one thing to run the
[3:25] Speaker 4: route like the receiver. It's another thing to go high
[3:27] Speaker 4: point the ball, get your feet down. Like these guys,
[3:31] Speaker 4: even the third, fourth guys that you think of when
[3:33] Speaker 4: you think about this defense, like Job and Pritchett, get
[3:35] Speaker 4: it done. In fact, You know, we're the only show
[3:38] Speaker 4: here that can go and give highlights right off the bat.
[3:41] Speaker 4: I want to actually hear that Julian Love interception, taking
[3:47] Speaker 4: it back to the fourth quarter. Actually, I'm going to
[3:50] Speaker 4: switch that up. Let's go to the Nehemiah Pritchett interception
[3:52] Speaker 4: because that brings us to the.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Start of the fourth quarter.
[3:55] Speaker 4: The Patriots are driving, and this is really where the
[3:58] Speaker 4: beginning of the end for this Patriots offense and Drake
[4:01] Speaker 4: Mays night starts.
[4:02] Speaker 1: Let's hear that Pritchett interceptions.
[4:04] Speaker 2: May under center play fake to kinder this time may
[4:07] Speaker 2: hits his back foot he's going to let it fly
[4:09] Speaker 2: down the near side reaching up tipping it.
[4:11] Speaker 3: Up intercepting it coming back to the near side it's
[4:15] Speaker 3: coming up the near side line across the 20 to
[4:19] Speaker 3: 25 30 stumbles down to 35 great coverage tool coverage
[4:23] Speaker 3: two-man coverage.
[4:24] Speaker 1: Downfield I love that.
[4:28] Speaker 4: And it's funny to think where we were at the
[4:30] Speaker 4: beginning of the fourth quarter when we're like, we have
[4:32] Speaker 4: no highlights to this game.
[4:33] Speaker 1: And it did end in very Seattle fashion.
[4:37] Speaker 4: Like what got you going watching this secondary do their
[4:40] Speaker 4: thing late in the game?
[4:41] Speaker 6: Just the control, the body control, the hand-eye coordination at
[4:45] Speaker 6: full speed. That was a rule of cool interception as
[4:48] Speaker 6: well as just a really, really sick, awesome play. Truly,
[4:51] Speaker 6: I mean, it was to me when we talk a
[4:54] Speaker 6: lot about really good defense as we talk about to me,
[4:58] Speaker 6: how in control they can keep their bodies when they're
[5:01] Speaker 6: going at full speed. And when their brains are moving
[5:03] Speaker 6: a million miles an hour, diagnosing things, the Seahawks did
[5:07] Speaker 6: a lot of different things tonight with pressure. They had to,
[5:09] Speaker 6: you know, try to just confuse and mix up Drake May.
[5:12] Speaker 6: They were playing some cloudier coverages at times. They were
[5:15] Speaker 6: rotating players and they were relying on deeper reserve guys
[5:19] Speaker 6: because Nicky Manwari was injured. And so, This, to me,
[5:23] Speaker 6: was an example of just really talent and depth and
[5:26] Speaker 6: really good coaching of technique and just a really, really solid,
[5:30] Speaker 6: just relentless effort because it really wasn't like this for
[5:34] Speaker 6: a while in this game. And then these defensive backs
[5:37] Speaker 6: just started really showing up and Drake May was testing
[5:40] Speaker 6: them and did not pass the test there.
[5:42] Speaker 1: No, he did not.
[5:44] Speaker 4: I think all three were bad decisions. The first one's
[5:49] Speaker 4: a jump ball to Romeo Dobbs.
[5:50] Speaker 1: The third is.
[5:52] Speaker 4: disastrous decision Julian Love made a nice play on the
[5:56] Speaker 4: second one but maybe got confused and Douglas.
[5:58] Speaker 6: Yeah I might argue with you on on the second
[6:00] Speaker 6: one because it I think they were I think all
[6:02] Speaker 6: the pressure they had been sending sort of almost made
[6:05] Speaker 6: some of the drop like some of the maybe faux
[6:08] Speaker 6: pressure body positioning of the DBs a little bit confusing
[6:11] Speaker 6: for him it looked like that was like set up
[6:14] Speaker 6: by earlier plays that they baited him into that.
[6:16] Speaker 5: So, but yes, continue. I interrupted you.
[6:19] Speaker 4: I was, no, no, you're absolutely right. I was saying
[6:21] Speaker 4: like the first and third were bad decisions. The third
[6:23] Speaker 4: was like, he got fooled. It's going to happen. And
[6:25] Speaker 4: it was a great play by Julian love. It's a reminder,
[6:28] Speaker 4: like how this team has put their secondary together. It's like,
[6:30] Speaker 4: you watch requel and leave. You don't have Nick, him
[6:33] Speaker 4: and worry. And they coach up these guys like Nehemiah Pritchett.
[6:36] Speaker 4: And they bring in a guy like Josh Doe from
[6:37] Speaker 4: Philadelphia and he makes it happen.
[6:40] Speaker 1: What the heck? I want to see highlights.
[6:42] Speaker 4: We've been waiting so long for actual game highlights. Let's
[6:45] Speaker 4: see that Julian Love interception in the fourth quarter.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Third and 14, May. Here comes the rush. Stands.
[6:54] Speaker 1: Throws down the middle.
[6:55] Speaker 6: Intercepted.
[6:56] Speaker 1: Julian Love makes a man miss.
[6:59] Speaker 3: Turns upfield. Got some blockers. Gets hit. Gets knocked out
[7:02] Speaker 3: of bounds. Inside the 35-yard line. Julian Love has been
[7:07] Speaker 3: all over the field tonight. He has been an absolute
[7:12] Speaker 3: thorn in Drake May's behind. And that time, the second
[7:16] Speaker 3: pick of the night for the Seattle defense.
[7:19] Speaker 6: Yeah, Greg, it's cool because that was his biggest splash play,
[7:25] Speaker 6: I would say, that we were using in the highlight.
[7:27] Speaker 6: But one thing that Julian Love really embodied for this
[7:30] Speaker 6: team tonight, and Nehemiah Pritchett did as well with a
[7:32] Speaker 6: big stop for no gain late in the game, was.
[7:36] Speaker 5: How well they tackle.
[7:38] Speaker 6: And Julian Love added a few tackles for loss and
[7:41] Speaker 6: a couple of run stuffs, was getting into the backfield,
[7:43] Speaker 6: was playing everywhere, was really just marshalling everything everything, keeping
[7:48] Speaker 6: everything organized, but also very cloudy at times too, for
[7:51] Speaker 6: the quarterback.
[7:52] Speaker 5: And that's part of it is even when the.
[7:55] Speaker 6: Patriots were moving the ball and with some of those
[7:57] Speaker 6: like swing passes that they hit and some of the
[8:00] Speaker 6: short stuff that they were trying to go into, get
[8:03] Speaker 6: into a rhythm with and, and mitigate pressure a little bit,
[8:06] Speaker 6: which they did well through most of the first three
[8:08] Speaker 6: quarters of the game. Um, and into the fourth quarter, they,
[8:12] Speaker 6: the Seahawks didn't make anything easy for them because they
[8:15] Speaker 6: tackle so well. And because they can move these players
[8:19] Speaker 6: and get them into the backfield so often.
[8:22] Speaker 5: And it's not just the DBs. It's the big guys, too.
[8:25] Speaker 4: And I thought the Patriots did a better job than
[8:27] Speaker 4: the Super Bowl, recognizing blitzes and pass protecting for the
[8:30] Speaker 4: most part. But Chris Collinsworth was going nuts about how
[8:33] Speaker 4: the offensive line was better. And it was bad. Like
[8:36] Speaker 4: their running game was a disaster. They stuck with it
[8:39] Speaker 4: the whole game. Their offense wasn't much better than the
[8:41] Speaker 4: Super Bowl.
[8:42] Speaker 1: If it was at all.
[8:42] Speaker 4: These were actually the two worst games by EPA per
[8:45] Speaker 4: play of the entire Mike Vrabel era, the last two
[8:49] Speaker 4: against the Seahawks. Now, that's heavily weighted towards the last
[8:52] Speaker 4: three drives, but they had 10 points before those three drives.
[8:55] Speaker 4: They wasted opportunities. They didn't really move the ball. The Seahawks,
[8:59] Speaker 4: with Drew Locke at quarterback, ended up with more yards
[9:01] Speaker 4: than the Patriots, despite the Patriots finally putting together a
[9:05] Speaker 4: good drive in the fourth quarter. And before we kind
[9:07] Speaker 4: of get to the larger picture, I do kind of
[9:09] Speaker 4: want to start with the end of the game. It
[9:12] Speaker 4: was fascinating because in so many ways, this was a
[9:15] Speaker 4: week one game.
[9:16] Speaker 1: Both teams looked sloppy.
[9:18] Speaker 4: The Seahawks were kind of a disaster in terms of
[9:20] Speaker 4: their operation. Tons of pre-snap penalties, two personal foul calls.
[9:25] Speaker 4: At one time, I think they had five penalties before
[9:29] Speaker 4: the play started and two 15-yard penalties. And they also
[9:33] Speaker 4: blew their timeouts early in the second half. So when
[9:36] Speaker 4: that final interception happened, Jordan, it was setting up for, wow,
[9:40] Speaker 4: the Patriots handled the end of the game sequence incredibly well.
[9:45] Speaker 4: And Drake May overcomes these mistakes to beat the vaunted
[9:49] Speaker 4: Seahawks defense at the end of the game. On that drive,
[9:52] Speaker 4: they go for a fourth and two inside their own 35.
[9:55] Speaker 4: Drake May runs for the first time, as you pointed
[9:57] Speaker 4: out to me in the first half on that play.
[9:59] Speaker 1: He gets it.
[10:00] Speaker 4: He runs a couple other times just trying to buy
[10:03] Speaker 4: time on that drive. He overcomes a third and 19,
[10:05] Speaker 4: hits Hunter Henry for 10 yards, and then a fourth
[10:09] Speaker 4: and nine getting it to Matt Collins. He gets them
[10:12] Speaker 4: in easy field goal position to possibly win the game
[10:16] Speaker 4: before they start getting penalties. And that's why I have
[10:20] Speaker 4: a little problem with Collinsworth saying the offensive line was
[10:22] Speaker 4: playing well because they had penalty after penalty from the
[10:25] Speaker 4: Patriots offensive line.
[10:26] Speaker 1: Will Campbell had a couple. They had more down the stretch.
[10:29] Speaker 4: And it was kind of a mistake off and like
[10:31] Speaker 4: whose best is going to win and whose best was
[10:34] Speaker 4: the Seahawks defense. They're just like the best group of
[10:37] Speaker 4: this game. So I give you the choice of your
[10:40] Speaker 4: on your list. Like what is one of the cool
[10:41] Speaker 4: plays you want to highlight? about this Seahawks team. I'm
[10:44] Speaker 4: putting you on the spot, but.
[10:46] Speaker 6: Yeah, Chenanuosu jumps the screen on second down in the
[10:49] Speaker 6: third quarter.
[10:51] Speaker 5: That was sick, okay?
[10:53] Speaker 3: Okay.
[10:54] Speaker 5: Oh, Chenanuosu had a really great game first quarter.
[10:58] Speaker 6: He totally bricks the rookie tight end, Eli Raritan, who
[11:03] Speaker 6: did have the first touchdown of the NFL season, so
[11:06] Speaker 6: good for him, and he's a rookie tight end for
[11:08] Speaker 6: New England. And then that's when, that was the sequence
[11:12] Speaker 6: that set up Witherspoon on the corner blitz too. And
[11:16] Speaker 6: for me, that was like them trying to set the
[11:18] Speaker 6: tone and make a statement of intent. And the sequence
[11:21] Speaker 6: itself was so, I guess, new vintage of what the Seahawks,
[11:26] Speaker 6: the Seahawks group is. Um, I really appreciated the sequence
[11:29] Speaker 6: after a totally disastrous four play 14 net yards possession
[11:34] Speaker 6: in the third quarter by drew lock and the Seattle offense,
[11:38] Speaker 6: where it was a tackle for loss by Julian love.
[11:42] Speaker 6: It was a one-yard stop, another third down stop. And
[11:45] Speaker 6: then on the punt team, Jay Harbaugh says, I'm the
[11:49] Speaker 6: OG special teams guy.
[11:51] Speaker 5: I'm from that family.
[11:52] Speaker 2: Oh, come on.
[11:53] Speaker 1: Say it with me. I'm not going to say it.
[11:55] Speaker 5: You're sending me texts.
[11:56] Speaker 1: You are so fired up. I'm the Harbaugh here.
[11:58] Speaker 5: I say you're a rude text.
[12:02] Speaker 6: And they sort of scared the Patriots into taking a
[12:06] Speaker 6: penalty there.
[12:06] Speaker 5: That was really bad.
[12:08] Speaker 6: For me, that was like the two phases that we
[12:10] Speaker 6: know Seattle really finds its edges in showing up in
[12:15] Speaker 6: a big way and, and lifting the floor for, for
[12:17] Speaker 6: a pretty struggling offense.
[12:18] Speaker 5: And I'm not saying Drew, Drew Locke played poorly.
[12:21] Speaker 6: There was some situational stuff that was really, really bad.
[12:23] Speaker 6: Some of the pressure pickups were just failure. Like he's
[12:26] Speaker 6: going to, he's going to want back the times where
[12:28] Speaker 6: he was staring at his wristband like seven times and
[12:30] Speaker 6: delay of games.
[12:31] Speaker 1: And some of the.
[12:32] Speaker 6: Pressure calls, they'll probably change some of the pressure call
[12:34] Speaker 6: assignments to somebody else because clearly he was not in
[12:37] Speaker 6: charge of executing them. And a couple of those, like
[12:40] Speaker 6: the Yakis play, like a couple of those plays really
[12:41] Speaker 6: got blown up and someone should have picked up that
[12:44] Speaker 6: pressure and adjusted beforehand. But these two phases are what
[12:48] Speaker 6: makes Seattle special. I think it sounds so cheesy, I know,
[12:51] Speaker 6: but I would bet that that's the group they wanted
[12:54] Speaker 6: on the field at the end of the game was
[12:56] Speaker 6: their defense.
[12:57] Speaker 1: It's absolutely true.
[12:58] Speaker 4: And Drew Locke did not have a turnover in this game.
[13:01] Speaker 4: In the end, you know, like if you just looked
[13:03] Speaker 4: at the box score, he's 16 for 22 for 187
[13:05] Speaker 4: yards and a touchdown. They only end up with 13 points,
[13:08] Speaker 4: but The key play in the entire game, other than
[13:12] Speaker 4: the game-ending interception, is the JSN touchdown. And the fact
[13:19] Speaker 4: that the Patriots, going into halftime with the lead, with
[13:23] Speaker 4: Mike Tomlin in the building, you know, covering the game
[13:26] Speaker 4: for NBC, decided to do what Mike Tomlin says you
[13:30] Speaker 4: don't want to do, and that's live in your fears.
[13:33] Speaker 4: The Patriots were living in their fears. They were living
[13:36] Speaker 4: on short runs to Ramondre Stevenson. They get over midfield,
[13:40] Speaker 4: and they call a run on fourth and five. When
[13:42] Speaker 4: you have Seattle reeling, you get a couple yards, and
[13:45] Speaker 4: then you punt at the end of the half. And
[13:48] Speaker 4: you know who didn't punt on fourth down?
[13:52] Speaker 1: Mike McDonald. He calls a play-action pass. Let's hear it.
[13:56] Speaker 2: And it's going to be fourth down and less than
[13:59] Speaker 2: a yard. Drew Locke is going to go under center.
[14:02] Speaker 2: Ibex behind him. Wilson stays in a tailback. Play fake.
[14:09] Speaker 2: Drew looks.
[14:09] Speaker 1: Drew throws. Ball is caught.
[14:11] Speaker 3: Guess who?
[14:11] Speaker 1: J.S.M.
[14:12] Speaker 3: Breaks his tackle.
[14:12] Speaker 6: 30, 25, 20.
[14:12] Speaker 3: He can go.
[14:14] Speaker 6: He is.
[14:14] Speaker 3: Touchdown Seahawks.
[14:17] Speaker 6: J.S.M.
[14:19] Speaker 3: On a quick turn in.
[14:22] Speaker 1: Takes it 45 yards.
[14:23] Speaker 3: Runs right through the heart of the Patriot defense. And
[14:28] Speaker 3: he lances their heart.
[14:32] Speaker 4: Reminds me of a lot of plays from that Super
[14:34] Speaker 4: Bowl where they got the linebackers, Robert Spillane in that case,
[14:37] Speaker 4: to suck up on the play-action fake. And on a
[14:40] Speaker 4: day where I was like, JSN's been kind of quiet
[14:42] Speaker 4: until that touchdown, he ends up with eight catches for
[14:45] Speaker 4: 122 yards. This is a game where neither team went
[14:48] Speaker 4: over 300 yards, and yet JSN just getting his MVP numbers.
[14:52] Speaker 4: And I know McDonald didn't have a perfect game, but
[14:55] Speaker 4: I do think that's a big difference between these two
[14:57] Speaker 4: coaching staffs in this game about how they handled those situations.
[15:00] Speaker 4: One is playing to win. It felt like one was
[15:02] Speaker 4: playing not to lose.
[15:04] Speaker 6: That call is McDonald's to make to go for it
[15:08] Speaker 6: on that fourth down. I want to also say it
[15:11] Speaker 6: shows he had some faith in Brian Fleury, his new
[15:15] Speaker 6: offensive coordinator. And in part, you could really see why,
[15:19] Speaker 6: because that looked like a very San Francisco 49ers thing
[15:23] Speaker 6: to do. Like not go for it on fourth down.
[15:25] Speaker 6: Kyle Shanahan almost like just never. does the thing, but
[15:28] Speaker 6: on a short yardage play like that to line up
[15:31] Speaker 6: in that formation with the fullback to run like a,
[15:35] Speaker 6: a longer developing play action to have the receiver come
[15:40] Speaker 6: off the line of scrimmage as if he is going
[15:42] Speaker 6: to go for the deeper concept, but then sit right
[15:45] Speaker 6: in the soft part of that zone where that system
[15:49] Speaker 6: often puts linebackers in absolute hell, like, and then to
[15:53] Speaker 6: have him turn and then have the yards after the catch.
[15:57] Speaker 5: I know Seahawks, I'm sorry to say this. It just
[16:00] Speaker 5: looked very like vintage.
[16:02] Speaker 6: Kyle Shanahan is going to, to steal your soul in
[16:06] Speaker 6: this moment kind of play. And I loved seeing the
[16:09] Speaker 6: cohesion between Mike McDonald actually making that decision and going
[16:13] Speaker 6: for it. And then trusting Brian Flory was going to
[16:16] Speaker 6: call that type of play. Obviously he most recently coached
[16:19] Speaker 6: in San Francisco. So to me, it was like a
[16:22] Speaker 6: lot of callbacks.
[16:23] Speaker 5: In a cool way.
[16:24] Speaker 6: That's what I love about football is like, we're all
[16:26] Speaker 6: products of stuff we did before. And that was some
[16:29] Speaker 6: of this, this game very much.
[16:30] Speaker 5: I mean, you could see it in the game plans
[16:32] Speaker 5: for both teams too.
[16:34] Speaker 1: No doubt.
[16:34] Speaker 4: And look, Clint Kubiak was with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco.
[16:37] Speaker 4: Seahawks fans will take anything that looks like the 49ers
[16:41] Speaker 4: offense under Kyle Shanahan this season. I am thinking of
[16:45] Speaker 4: our friends that are waking up in in Europe and
[16:49] Speaker 4: they're listening to the podcast and they're like wait Sam
[16:52] Speaker 4: Donald got hurt also AJ Brown hurt his ankle in
[16:55] Speaker 4: this game limped off Mike Rabel would not give any
[16:58] Speaker 4: update after the game he was limping off under his
[17:01] Speaker 4: own power but that happened that was an important part
[17:05] Speaker 4: of the Patriots offense struggling down the stretch because at
[17:07] Speaker 4: that point in the game he was the guy Drake
[17:09] Speaker 4: May was looking to on big third downs he had
[17:12] Speaker 4: I believe three catches and at least two first downs
[17:16] Speaker 4: of those three catches maybe all three Sam Darnold leaves
[17:20] Speaker 4: with a hip injury and.
[17:22] Speaker 1: We're excited football's back.
[17:23] Speaker 4: We're a little let down, you know, when Darnold gets
[17:26] Speaker 4: hurt and it's just a lackluster. first half and it
[17:31] Speaker 4: just feels like a bummer of a kickoff game and
[17:35] Speaker 4: we're riding high taping this right afterwards because we got
[17:38] Speaker 4: real football in the end and yet it's week one
[17:41] Speaker 4: like the Patriots lost to Gino Smith last year in
[17:44] Speaker 4: week one in the Raiders and went to the Super
[17:46] Speaker 4: Bowl the year before Drod Mayo beat Joe Burrow and
[17:50] Speaker 4: the Bengals in Cincinnati in week one and we know
[17:53] Speaker 4: what happened there and What really matters more than anything
[18:06] Speaker 4: tonight is what happened to Sam Darnold. Unfortunately, we don't
[18:10] Speaker 4: know all the details, but Sam Darnold is as tough
[18:13] Speaker 4: as they come. The fact that at first no doctors
[18:17] Speaker 4: were looking at him, but he just couldn't walk and
[18:19] Speaker 4: had to call to be checked on and then ultimately
[18:24] Speaker 4: went out of the game with a hip injury. Do
[18:27] Speaker 4: you have more postgame information for us?
[18:29] Speaker 5: I do. I do.
[18:31] Speaker 6: I've got your back here, Greg. So this is per
[18:34] Speaker 6: Ian Rappaport and Adam Schefter. Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald
[18:38] Speaker 6: said the team got great news back on Sam Darnold
[18:42] Speaker 6: and doctors do not believe the quarterback's hip is fractured.
[18:47] Speaker 6: Said the medical folks were able to rule out a fracture,
[18:49] Speaker 6: more tests coming, but initially positive news for Sam Darnold.
[18:52] Speaker 5: But yeah, you hate to see anyone get hurt.
[18:55] Speaker 4: Overall, that's positive because a hip fracture would knock you
[18:58] Speaker 4: out for a season. Any hip injury is really concerning.
[19:01] Speaker 4: And so we just don't know. And that makes it
[19:05] Speaker 4: sound more positive. But I've seen this go a million
[19:07] Speaker 4: different ways where you think it's good, then it goes
[19:09] Speaker 4: bad or you think it's bad and then it goes
[19:11] Speaker 4: good after the game. I guess my question for the
[19:15] Speaker 4: short term, at least, is just, you know, what this
[19:18] Speaker 4: team is Can do. Immediately I see people being like,
[19:21] Speaker 4: Drew Locke's not going to be their starter next week. Like,
[19:23] Speaker 4: who do they go get? And I'm thinking, like, are
[19:26] Speaker 4: you high? Drew Locke has been there for four years plus. Like,
[19:31] Speaker 4: Drew Locke is the guy they chose to be the
[19:34] Speaker 4: backup quarterback. They are not going to find someone that
[19:36] Speaker 4: they like better than Drew Locke anytime soon. If nothing else,
[19:40] Speaker 4: they're going to see what he looks like. And now
[19:42] Speaker 4: that we hear, you know, the injury is not a fracture,
[19:44] Speaker 4: obviously we're going to be hopeful that Sam Darnold can
[19:47] Speaker 4: get back sooner than later. I want to look at
[19:49] Speaker 4: the Seattle schedule in the coming weeks. They play at Arizona,
[19:54] Speaker 4: at Washington, home for Chargers, and then home for the 49ers.
[19:57] Speaker 4: That's a long runway. But the next two weeks, look,
[20:00] Speaker 4: if you can beat the Patriots with Drew Locke, you've
[20:04] Speaker 4: got a real chance to beat the Cardinals and the Commanders.
[20:07] Speaker 1: This is why you have your backup quarterback.
[20:09] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[20:10] Speaker 6: Because I thought, I thought overall the Patriots were throwing
[20:13] Speaker 6: some interesting stuff at Seattle in terms of their pressure.
[20:17] Speaker 5: I mentioned that before.
[20:18] Speaker 6: That's something where they really were able to adjust quickly
[20:21] Speaker 6: and take advantage of a quarterback who is working.
[20:23] Speaker 5: Off a wristband.
[20:24] Speaker 6: When you're working off a wristband, you, you get the
[20:26] Speaker 6: call in your head. It's usually a shortened version of
[20:29] Speaker 6: like whatever the, the, you know, starter would probably have.
[20:34] Speaker 6: And the starter would probably have multiple calls and can
[20:35] Speaker 6: what they call can it. So like like take one
[20:38] Speaker 6: away essentially, or go to a different one. And instead
[20:40] Speaker 6: he's checking on his wristband for code words and colors
[20:43] Speaker 6: that tell him what the play is. And that just,
[20:45] Speaker 6: it slows the whole operation down. I'm not, you know,
[20:48] Speaker 6: obviously you don't hold it against him. That's what backups
[20:50] Speaker 6: have to do because normally they're running the scout team,
[20:54] Speaker 6: not the entire offensive operation. So for me, it's like, okay,
[20:58] Speaker 6: if they can clean that up in the long period
[21:00] Speaker 6: of time that they have, if Sam Darnold is not
[21:02] Speaker 6: ready to go, if they can get their tempo back
[21:05] Speaker 6: a little bit, If Brian Fleury feels comfortable moving drew
[21:08] Speaker 6: lock off the spot a little bit more, a lot
[21:10] Speaker 6: of what he was doing was pure drop back. And
[21:12] Speaker 6: what was interesting was some of his best throws were
[21:15] Speaker 6: out of the pure drop back. Like he had a
[21:17] Speaker 6: couple of angled arm angled throws that were just really solid.
[21:20] Speaker 5: There was one over the middle that he just dropped.
[21:23] Speaker 6: Over a leaping defender.
[21:27] Speaker 1: He had two or three awesome throws, which Duloc will do.
[21:30] Speaker 6: Yeah, which he'll do, but then other times it'll be like, oh,
[21:33] Speaker 6: there's a delay of game at the wrong time and
[21:35] Speaker 6: you come away with a field goal instead of actual touchdown.
[21:38] Speaker 4: Other times you're like, does this man have peripheral vision?
[21:42] Speaker 4: He is like a battering ram of a quarterback. But
[21:46] Speaker 4: he's won some big games. You know what game this
[21:47] Speaker 4: reminded me of more than anything was? the comeback that
[21:50] Speaker 4: he had against the Eagles in primetime in 2023. It's
[21:55] Speaker 4: the main reason he's still on the Seahawks, frankly, because
[21:57] Speaker 4: Gino Smith got hurt that day. It was a last-second
[21:59] Speaker 4: start by Drew Locke, and he wins a monster game
[22:02] Speaker 4: against a really good team in primetime.
[22:04] Speaker 1: It's partly why he's here.
[22:05] Speaker 4: And it reminds me a little bit of the Week
[22:07] Speaker 4: 1 game the Seahawks had with the 49ers last year,
[22:08] Speaker 4: where it was just nip and tuck. Week 1 is ugly,
[22:13] Speaker 4: and I think it's more important than ever that they
[22:15] Speaker 4: found a way to win this game. It's why I
[22:17] Speaker 4: think the loss... for the Patriots is particularly painful for them.
[22:21] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[22:21] Speaker 6: And I, and I think you can, especially, we don't know,
[22:24] Speaker 6: we won't know what the recovery timeline is, but you
[22:26] Speaker 6: can win a couple of games with a faster operating
[22:30] Speaker 6: drew lock to that point. It's just, for me, the
[22:34] Speaker 6: real problems came from confusion in the operation. Like even
[22:38] Speaker 6: the throw where he's, um, like basically half across the
[22:41] Speaker 6: line of scrimmage and half behind the line of scrimmage
[22:43] Speaker 6: as he, as he throws the ball and it was,
[22:45] Speaker 6: you know, an incomplete pass and sort of looked really
[22:48] Speaker 6: odd and like it could have been a disaster. To me,
[22:51] Speaker 6: that's just not confident in what the play was, honestly,
[22:54] Speaker 6: and not getting the timing right. So I think, too,
[22:57] Speaker 6: that that's something that you help. And I saw that
[22:59] Speaker 6: Seahawks fans and some and others were like, well, Jalen
[23:02] Speaker 6: Milrow is on the team, too. Like, what if there's a, well,
[23:05] Speaker 6: he was the emergency quarterback, so he couldn't have come
[23:07] Speaker 6: in the game unless there was another injury. So for me,
[23:11] Speaker 6: it's like, okay, I think that I think you can
[23:14] Speaker 6: patchwork together some things. I don't think you're looking at
[23:17] Speaker 6: wanting a long-term situation with Sam Darnold out.
[23:21] Speaker 4: No, you have an offensive line that came into the
[23:25] Speaker 4: game blowing the Patriots off the ball. Jadarian Price ends
[23:28] Speaker 4: up with 10 catches for 52 yards, but they trusted
[23:31] Speaker 4: George Helani. We kept hearing this throughout the preseason, like
[23:36] Speaker 4: George Helani is going to be a big factor on
[23:38] Speaker 4: this team. And I'm guessing he played Much more. I'm
[23:41] Speaker 4: checking it as we talk. They split reps almost evenly.
[23:44] Speaker 4: But it felt like on the third downs, on the
[23:48] Speaker 4: short yardage situations, they trusted Helani. So they end up
[23:50] Speaker 4: splitting the carries more. But I think you should be
[23:53] Speaker 4: able to run the ball a little bit. You have
[23:54] Speaker 4: Cooper Cup on the team who just comes out of
[23:57] Speaker 4: nowhere with the sickest one-handed catch.
[23:59] Speaker 2: All right.
[23:59] Speaker 4: Let's just think kind of rapid fire any other takeaways
[24:04] Speaker 4: from this game. The Patriots missed Travion Henderson.
[24:08] Speaker 2: They.
[24:10] Speaker 4: Couldn't run the ball. Romeo Dobbs, as I mentioned, had
[24:13] Speaker 4: about as bad a debut as you can possibly have.
[24:16] Speaker 1: Here were the three targets.
[24:18] Speaker 4: The first one we showed you, where he kind of
[24:20] Speaker 4: couldn't break up a potential jump ball. And it wasn't
[24:25] Speaker 4: a great throw by May. But also, if Dobbs judges
[24:29] Speaker 4: it better, attacks the ball, who knows? Maybe at least
[24:34] Speaker 4: it's incomplete. He is the target on another.
[24:40] Speaker 4: Interception and then more than more than anything he drops
[24:45] Speaker 4: one of Drake May's better plays one of the many
[24:47] Speaker 4: plays where Drake May got out of pressure and this
[24:49] Speaker 4: time he was rolling to the right and he had
[24:52] Speaker 4: Romeo Dobbs downfield he said you know May didn't hit
[24:55] Speaker 4: anything downfield that would have been his one completion and
[24:58] Speaker 4: instead he dropped it and ended a drive that uh
[25:02] Speaker 4: Drake May forced the ball on the very next play
[25:05] Speaker 4: and wound up being an interception so that that was
[25:07] Speaker 4: a big flip for them so They spend all this
[25:10] Speaker 4: money at wide receiver Jordan and A.J. Brown goes out
[25:13] Speaker 4: with an injury and Romeo Dobbs played less until Brown
[25:17] Speaker 4: got hurt than Mack Hollins. So that kind of showed
[25:19] Speaker 4: you where the trust level was at.
[25:21] Speaker 1: It wasn't a big difference. Like they were all playing plenty.
[25:24] Speaker 4: But Mack Hollins was used more than Romeo Dobbs, who
[25:26] Speaker 4: just did not look confident. In this game, any other
[25:29] Speaker 4: kind of quick hits before we get out of here?
[25:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[25:33] Speaker 6: You mentioned at the top, Drake may was really effective
[25:36] Speaker 6: picking up yards with his legs in the first half.
[25:39] Speaker 6: It was one of the things that was moving the
[25:40] Speaker 6: ball most effectively. It was keeping the Patriots actually really
[25:43] Speaker 6: efficient ahead of the sticks. He had five carries for
[25:46] Speaker 6: 36 yards in the first half. One was on second
[25:49] Speaker 6: and nine. It was a 16 yard carry. Um, and
[25:51] Speaker 6: then there was a second and one where he got three.
[25:53] Speaker 6: So he's converting those a second and 10 where he
[25:56] Speaker 6: gets sick. So he sets them up for a good
[25:57] Speaker 6: third down. And then he converts another one on a
[26:00] Speaker 6: second and seven. And for me, it just was helping
[26:03] Speaker 6: them stay on time and more efficient. He didn't run
[26:06] Speaker 6: at all like design and in terms of like design, not,
[26:09] Speaker 6: not avoiding pressure, not bootlegging, like just, it wasn't any
[26:12] Speaker 6: of that that we saw in the first half until
[26:14] Speaker 6: that fourth down pickup where he did run for it.
[26:17] Speaker 6: And for me, I was, I'm can, I just would
[26:19] Speaker 6: like to know where that went or why that went away.
[26:22] Speaker 6: And maybe they saw something that certainly I didn't see
[26:24] Speaker 6: but I'm curious because it was effective and it was
[26:27] Speaker 6: working and it seemed to settle him and settle the
[26:29] Speaker 6: rest of their their offense down and get them moving
[26:31] Speaker 6: the ball yeah I.
[26:34] Speaker 4: Think it's just they kept getting in bad down and
[26:37] Speaker 4: distance situations in the second half I mean they they
[26:40] Speaker 4: had that field goal early in the second half where
[26:42] Speaker 4: they had good field position and then they kept having
[26:44] Speaker 4: early penalties Will Campbell had a couple um and you
[26:48] Speaker 4: know you can only you run so much and even
[26:50] Speaker 4: in the first half I mean it was a bad
[26:51] Speaker 4: sign like they didn't get a pass off to their
[26:54] Speaker 4: receivers in the first couple drives because he just had
[26:57] Speaker 4: to scramble and then Devin Witherspoon is covering anyone like
[27:00] Speaker 4: no one could like complete a pass for the first
[27:03] Speaker 4: quarter of this.
[27:03] Speaker 6: Game and I would also say running a draw on
[27:08] Speaker 6: third and five only to punt after it yeah just
[27:13] Speaker 6: made me want to walk into the ocean.
[27:15] Speaker 4: Yes that was the moment where I thought oh, they're
[27:18] Speaker 4: probably going to lose this game. And to me, it
[27:21] Speaker 4: is a bigger loss for the Patriots than it is
[27:24] Speaker 4: even a great win for the Seahawks.
[27:26] Speaker 1: It's a great win.
[27:27] Speaker 4: Anytime you come back like that, down 10 points, you
[27:31] Speaker 4: got your backup quarterback.
[27:32] Speaker 1: It's a quality opponent. That's awesome.
[27:35] Speaker 4: The Patriots schedule this year is going to be much tougher.
[27:40] Speaker 4: It's the flip side. You have to show that you
[27:42] Speaker 4: can close games out like this. your quarterback comes in
[27:46] Speaker 4: second in the MVP last year. And I think did
[27:48] Speaker 4: a lot of good things tonight. If you just erased
[27:51] Speaker 4: those interceptions all in the fourth, we're going into the third.
[27:54] Speaker 1: I thought, you know what?
[27:55] Speaker 4: He's actually playing a pretty good game, even though the
[27:57] Speaker 4: numbers aren't that good, but for him to make that
[28:01] Speaker 4: many errors in one fourth quarter, and then for the
[28:04] Speaker 4: defense to give up what they did, which wasn't too crazy.
[28:08] Speaker 4: And then to just basically not get it done. The
[28:11] Speaker 4: bad omen, Jordan, it's.
[28:13] Speaker 5: A, Omens and signs.
[28:14] Speaker 6: We're tracking them week one, baby. We're tracking omens and
[28:17] Speaker 6: signs all weekend.
[28:18] Speaker 3: It is.
[28:20] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[28:21] Speaker 4: The first play for the Seahawks going for plus 10
[28:23] Speaker 4: yards when the Patriots had.
[28:24] Speaker 1: Like eight yards in the box. I was like, this
[28:25] Speaker 1: is a terrible omen.
[28:27] Speaker 4: You know, what's a great omen is we got through
[28:29] Speaker 4: this first recap of the season.
[28:32] Speaker 1: Fun game. Good to hear that Darnold doesn't have a
[28:35] Speaker 1: hip fracture.
[28:35] Speaker 4: So hopefully he's not out too long and it doesn't,
[28:39] Speaker 4: you know, capsize one of the best teams. in the
[28:43] Speaker 4: NFL Patriots will have a long, what is it? 10
[28:47] Speaker 4: days before their week two game. I always do think it's,
[28:51] Speaker 4: it's an advantage to get this first week. Now it's Wednesday,
[28:54] Speaker 4: but even the Thursday game, you get a little extra rest.
[28:57] Speaker 4: You don't have the short week before it. It's a
[28:59] Speaker 4: little bit of an advantage here for the Seahawks and
[29:01] Speaker 4: the Patriots. Let's get out of here. Hit that music. Kyrie,
[29:04] Speaker 4: great job on this first show. Thank you to everyone,
[29:07] Speaker 4: of course, who watched us live. We're going to be
[29:09] Speaker 4: doing it again on Thursday night.
[29:12] Speaker 1: So check us out. It will be me and Nick Shook.
[29:16] Speaker 4: After the 49ers and the Rams, the first ever game
[29:20] Speaker 4: in Australia. We have our preview show coming on Thursday.
[29:23] Speaker 4: We got picks coming on Friday. We are rolling, baby.
