[0:04] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're really getting tired of
[0:07] Speaker 1: the Browns letting us down. I am Greg Rosenthal. I'm
[0:10] Speaker 1: in my garage with Jordan Rodrieg. This is a last
[0:14] Speaker 1: minute campus episode going live because we have to talk
[0:20] Speaker 1: about some follow ups to our long show Sunday night.
[0:23] Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson has been named the starting quarterback of the Browns. Jordan,
[0:28] Speaker 1: We're going to get to you in a second, but
[0:29] Speaker 1: let's just start with the sound the press conferences on
[0:32] Speaker 1: Monday morning after we learned Deshaun Watson was going to
[0:35] Speaker 1: be the Browns quarterback, Todd Monkin and Deshaun Watson both spoke,
[0:39] Speaker 1: we will get to Ashton gent news. We will get
[0:41] Speaker 1: to a lot of interesting injury news, players returning from
[0:45] Speaker 1: injuries as well around training camp, but we have to
[0:48] Speaker 1: start in Cleveland and we'll get you out of here
[0:50] Speaker 1: in about thirty minutes or so. Let's hear first from
[0:53] Speaker 1: Todd Monkin and how he made the decision, how.
[0:56] Speaker 2: DeShawn is going to start against Jacksonville. Took in the
[1:00] Speaker 2: whole body of work over the course of off season,
[1:04] Speaker 2: to training camp, to the games, the joint practice, and
[1:09] Speaker 2: ultimately felt like to start the season on the road,
[1:13] Speaker 2: Deshaun gave us the best chance to move the ball
[1:15] Speaker 2: and score points. I mean, that's really what it's about.
[1:18] Speaker 2: And felt that way going in the last game, but
[1:21] Speaker 2: wasn't sure, and after we talked as a staff and
[1:25] Speaker 2: after we relooked at everything, we're gonna go that direction.
[1:29] Speaker 1: Spoke on Sunday night that I thought I didn't have
[1:32] Speaker 1: any trust in the Browns to do the right thing,
[1:34] Speaker 1: which I think for their football team in this case,
[1:36] Speaker 1: would have been to start Shador Sanders and to just
[1:39] Speaker 1: end the Deshaun Watson era in Cleveland. I was curious
[1:43] Speaker 1: how Moncin and Watson would both respond to the fans reaction.
[1:47] Speaker 1: Let's hear from Monkin in terms of whether that was
[1:50] Speaker 1: a factor.
[1:52] Speaker 3: In his decision.
[1:53] Speaker 1: The big booze that they gave to Deshaun Watson after
[1:56] Speaker 1: his rough performance over the weekend.
[1:58] Speaker 2: I don't like being booed either. I don't like up
[2:00] Speaker 2: all sides three times at the other game. Okay, But
[2:02] Speaker 2: we earned that right. We earn our respect by how
[2:06] Speaker 2: we play. We earn our fans right in terms of
[2:12] Speaker 2: appreciation of the product we put on the field, and
[2:15] Speaker 2: that's our job. So on one side, I one hundred
[2:18] Speaker 2: percent understand where de Shawn is coming from. But ultimately
[2:23] Speaker 2: we're pros. I mean, we got to put on a
[2:25] Speaker 2: good product and we gotta play. You gotta pull your
[2:27] Speaker 2: big boy pants up and let's go play.
[2:29] Speaker 1: I was actually surprised by the media reaction after everything
[2:34] Speaker 1: that they just couldn't play the Shahn Watson again, that
[2:37] Speaker 1: they just thought it's gonna be shitar standers. It made
[2:39] Speaker 1: me hope that the fans could actually have a say here.
[2:42] Speaker 1: Ultimately they didn't. I thought it was telling Jordan that
[2:46] Speaker 1: Monkin mentioned in his first bit there that starting the
[2:50] Speaker 1: season on the road mattered to him. Just curious for
[2:55] Speaker 1: your thoughts of like what they are thinking here and
[2:58] Speaker 1: what you are thinking.
[3:00] Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I Greg, you know, I love football so
[3:03] Speaker 4: much and it brings me a lot of joy. And
[3:07] Speaker 4: this entire year's long saga at this point it makes
[3:12] Speaker 4: you feel really cynical as as just a person who
[3:15] Speaker 4: loves what the sport can do and what it can
[3:17] Speaker 4: do for fans.
[3:18] Speaker 5: And you know, there's a lot of layers to it.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Obviously we've covered all of this at length, but it
[3:25] Speaker 4: you have no choice but to really feel cynical watching
[3:28] Speaker 4: not only all of this unfold, but expecting it this
[3:32] Speaker 4: as I did, expecting this to happen this way the
[3:35] Speaker 4: entire time. I think that one thing that certain NFL
[3:39] Speaker 4: teams will remind us again and again and again is
[3:43] Speaker 4: that they truly believe that they can make you forget
[3:48] Speaker 4: everything that they previously had done, good, bad, or indifferent,
[3:53] Speaker 4: as long as at some point they're winning football games.
[3:56] Speaker 4: And so these mileage of misery that has been happening
[4:00] Speaker 4: that's been played out so long here in Cleveland over
[4:03] Speaker 4: the last several years, the Browns are clearly setting themselves
[4:08] Speaker 4: up or trying to to get a top quarterback next
[4:12] Speaker 4: or this offseason. They're clearly operating with the belief and
[4:16] Speaker 4: expectation that they have a plan, and silly you for
[4:23] Speaker 4: thinking that you could be disgruntled along the way. They're
[4:25] Speaker 4: going to do what they want anyway and what they
[4:27] Speaker 4: believe they are smarter than everyone else in doing. And
[4:32] Speaker 4: they are also going to really really hope and depend
[4:37] Speaker 4: on what they believe clearly to be a truth, and
[4:40] Speaker 4: that is that people will forget everything and forgive everything
[4:43] Speaker 4: if eventually they're winning football games. I don't know that
[4:46] Speaker 4: this organization will, but that's clearly what they're telling you
[4:49] Speaker 4: right now, and Todd Munkin's even saying that, he says
[4:54] Speaker 4: it in his press conference, we earn our respect with
[4:56] Speaker 4: how we play. Okay, Well, that says a lot of
[4:58] Speaker 4: things to me right there.
[5:00] Speaker 3: It does.
[5:00] Speaker 1: And yet I agree when when Deshaun Watson was booed
[5:07] Speaker 1: and he said, you know, it was personal on some level, yes,
[5:12] Speaker 1: because of all the misery that he's brought them in
[5:14] Speaker 1: the embarrassment, I mean, the contract was an embarrassment when
[5:17] Speaker 1: it happened, and they knew that they were in the
[5:18] Speaker 1: crosshairs immediately, And I think the front office totally misunderstood
[5:23] Speaker 1: the human element throughout number one of how Deshaun Watson
[5:27] Speaker 1: would handle being so vilified, of how long the NFL
[5:32] Speaker 1: would suspend him after he was credibly accused of sexual
[5:34] Speaker 1: assault by twenty seven women and settled with the vast
[5:38] Speaker 1: majority of them.
[5:39] Speaker 3: And yet I.
[5:39] Speaker 1: Actually think the up out, you know, pouring of Deshaun
[5:44] Speaker 1: Watson news and hatred over the weekend was more about
[5:49] Speaker 1: a his performance. He was truly awful in that game,
[5:52] Speaker 1: and he has not looked like a remotely good quarterback
[5:57] Speaker 1: for years, and he's coming off to torn Achilles. He's
[6:00] Speaker 1: just slow to process, slow to everything. If he was
[6:02] Speaker 1: playing well, I think they would forget about it. But
[6:04] Speaker 1: number two, I think people were just mad about how
[6:07] Speaker 1: he handled the press conference. That was it that he had,
[6:11] Speaker 1: you know, the temerity to still be so clueless and
[6:15] Speaker 1: tone deaf about getting mad at the fans and that
[6:20] Speaker 1: if he could play football they would cheer, and you
[6:22] Speaker 1: know what, they're probably right.
[6:23] Speaker 3: And I know he was saying.
[6:26] Speaker 1: Starting on the road was a factor in this and
[6:28] Speaker 1: wasn't the biggest factor. And I don't I'm going to
[6:30] Speaker 1: give him the benefit of that. I don't think he
[6:32] Speaker 1: meant that he's afraid of the fans just booing him.
[6:35] Speaker 1: He says they didn't talk about that at all. He
[6:38] Speaker 1: thinks it's because he can run an operation better than
[6:42] Speaker 1: Shador Sanders, getting the plays out, you know, pre snap penalties,
[6:45] Speaker 1: all that is more difficult on the road. And that's
[6:47] Speaker 1: the biggest difference between Watson and Schaudure. And I believe
[6:50] Speaker 1: him in that evaluation. But it's not going to be
[6:54] Speaker 1: easy at home either when they're booing the crap out
[6:56] Speaker 1: of them. And I hate to think that they're sole
[7:00] Speaker 1: Jordan that they think well, We'll give them two games
[7:02] Speaker 1: on the road. They aren't they aren't easy, Jacksonville and Tampa.
[7:05] Speaker 1: And if he's bad in those two games, I have
[7:07] Speaker 1: to think that they're already thinking in the back of
[7:10] Speaker 1: my mind it's shirirr Sanders by week three, Like I'm
[7:12] Speaker 1: my over under for Shoudur Sanders playing football for this
[7:15] Speaker 1: team is halftime of week three, Like, I don't even
[7:18] Speaker 1: know if he gets the halftime.
[7:19] Speaker 3: It could be, it could be before that.
[7:21] Speaker 5: I just fail to see.
[7:23] Speaker 4: First of all, how are you running your I don't
[7:27] Speaker 4: know the answer to this question.
[7:28] Speaker 5: By the way, this is a I would like to
[7:30] Speaker 5: know the answer to this.
[7:31] Speaker 4: How are you running your approach to the to the development,
[7:35] Speaker 4: the quarterback development, to where you're not confident enough in
[7:38] Speaker 4: a player who did start home and road games for
[7:40] Speaker 4: you last season to operate on the road that you
[7:44] Speaker 4: still need to see more from one of those players,
[7:48] Speaker 4: and that you might I think that honestly, them doing
[7:52] Speaker 4: this now because I feel so cynical about this, and
[7:56] Speaker 4: I again, I expected them to do this the entire time.
[7:58] Speaker 4: The second they guaranteed Deshaun Watson all of that money.
[8:04] Speaker 4: This was their fate that they sealed themselves, and so
[8:10] Speaker 4: I expected this to happen the second he was actually
[8:12] Speaker 4: like physically capable to play like some version of football. Again,
[8:17] Speaker 4: this is what I expected, because you obviously can't cut
[8:20] Speaker 4: him with the Dutch. I mean, you could do anything
[8:22] Speaker 4: you want, honestly, truly, you could do anything you want,
[8:24] Speaker 4: but in terms of realistically operating a football team, that
[8:29] Speaker 4: the dead money incurred would just be too exorbitant to
[8:32] Speaker 4: even feel the roster, right, So I always believed that
[8:37] Speaker 4: this was going to be the case. And to me,
[8:40] Speaker 4: it's like, what would even be the point of even
[8:42] Speaker 4: doing this if you're not going to roll with him
[8:44] Speaker 4: the full year.
[8:45] Speaker 5: You heard the fans, You heard the fans. You know
[8:49] Speaker 5: that that's not changing.
[8:50] Speaker 4: The play is probably not getting any better, and you
[8:54] Speaker 4: want an early pick next year, and you don't want
[8:56] Speaker 4: to have to spend all of these resources you just
[8:58] Speaker 4: acquired to go get it. So you're you're going in
[9:01] Speaker 4: with this. To me, they are this is all of this.
[9:06] Speaker 4: It's almost like the easiest, simplest answer, and the obvious
[9:08] Speaker 4: truth is it just is what it is.
[9:10] Speaker 1: And yet if he plays at the level in regular
[9:15] Speaker 1: season football and the the you know, mental firing doesn't
[9:19] Speaker 1: get faster than it's been in the preseason or even
[9:21] Speaker 1: when he last played before the achilles. I think they'll
[9:24] Speaker 1: they'll have no choice but to make a change.
[9:27] Speaker 3: It is.
[9:28] Speaker 1: It is really crazy that this front office got so
[9:31] Speaker 1: much love this offseason for a good offseason, and yet
[9:34] Speaker 1: they are willing to put their fans through this. Deshaun
[9:38] Speaker 1: Watson did not apologize for his press conference the other day.
[9:41] Speaker 1: I have watched headlines that say Deshaun Watson apologized. At
[9:45] Speaker 1: no point in the press conference, just like when he
[9:48] Speaker 1: talked about the allegations against him, did he actually apologize.
[9:52] Speaker 1: What he said was I was I'm human and the
[9:55] Speaker 1: emotions got the best of me. Let's listen to a
[9:59] Speaker 1: little more of what Watson said.
[10:01] Speaker 6: I'm moving forward. I just want to focus on football,
[10:03] Speaker 6: making sure that you know, I'm putting the best product
[10:05] Speaker 6: out there, having the best ability. You know, because I
[10:08] Speaker 6: thrive off the energy. I throw off the energy of
[10:10] Speaker 6: the fans, I throw off the energy of the community.
[10:13] Speaker 6: I thrive off all that stuff. You know. I think
[10:15] Speaker 6: looking back in my history at Clemson and you know
[10:18] Speaker 6: previous set up Houston organization. You know, I was a
[10:21] Speaker 6: big community guy, big city god, big fan guy, you know,
[10:25] Speaker 6: during the game. So you know, again, my emotions got
[10:29] Speaker 6: the best to me. I'm a human. I'll take full
[10:31] Speaker 6: responsibility of that.
[10:33] Speaker 1: I picked that particular part of his two and a
[10:35] Speaker 1: half minute long intro because I think it speaks to
[10:39] Speaker 1: something we talked about a little bit on Sunday night.
[10:43] Speaker 1: You forget that, Walter, You know, Deshaun Watson was not
[10:47] Speaker 1: just like a beloved figure in college and with Houston.
[10:52] Speaker 1: That actually being the good guy was central to his
[10:56] Speaker 1: entire identity and his entire reputation in the NFL. And
[11:00] Speaker 1: that's where I think the Browns also miscalculated things. He
[11:05] Speaker 1: does not play with confidence, he does not speak with confidence.
[11:07] Speaker 1: He does not speak honestly. Even in this press conference,
[11:10] Speaker 1: he said, the reason I came to Cleveland was to
[11:13] Speaker 1: you know, you know, put them on the map and
[11:16] Speaker 1: win a lot of games. And I wanted to, you know,
[11:18] Speaker 1: the fans to be proud of me. And it's like, no,
[11:20] Speaker 1: the reason you came to Cleveland is because they guaranteed
[11:22] Speaker 1: all your money. You wanted to go to Atlanta, you
[11:25] Speaker 1: chose to go to Cleveland at the very last second,
[11:27] Speaker 1: after they were literally the one team out of the
[11:29] Speaker 1: four that wanted you, that you eliminated in the process
[11:32] Speaker 1: because you didn't want to play in Cleveland. Like the
[11:35] Speaker 1: whole thing has been a lie throughout. But one thing
[11:38] Speaker 1: I think that he is hinting at there, which I
[11:40] Speaker 1: do think is true, is that his fall from Grace
[11:45] Speaker 1: and the fans hatred of him is all interconnected into
[11:50] Speaker 1: why I have no hope that this is going to
[11:52] Speaker 1: work and why why it hasn't worked.
[11:54] Speaker 3: Like I do think it affects the product on the field.
[11:58] Speaker 5: Yeah, I do. I you mentioned it in the show
[12:01] Speaker 5: you did with Nick Schook. Great show, by the way.
[12:05] Speaker 4: It was like you said, you didn't want to be
[12:08] Speaker 4: like an armchair psychologist about it, but it's almost like
[12:11] Speaker 4: it's like on a billboard at this point, you know,
[12:15] Speaker 4: of like it can't it can't be anything other than that.
[12:19] Speaker 5: He even sounded nervous talking.
[12:22] Speaker 4: There at the at the lectern to me and seemed
[12:25] Speaker 4: sort of fidgety, like he just wasn't quite sure of
[12:28] Speaker 4: himself there even at the at the lectern. And you
[12:31] Speaker 4: know you you asked the question, did it even sound
[12:35] Speaker 4: like he wanted this job? Uh?
[12:39] Speaker 5: Yeah, he lost like.
[12:40] Speaker 1: The football players, that's where he lost the dan Or
[12:42] Speaker 1: Lafski's and everything. When he started to sound like this
[12:45] Speaker 1: is too much for me. I don't even want to
[12:47] Speaker 1: do this anymore.
[12:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, and and so I just think and again, and
[12:51] Speaker 4: just to be a little bit clearer because I sort
[12:53] Speaker 4: of stumbled over my point earlier. If you don't have
[12:55] Speaker 4: a development program where you feel confident that a player
[13:00] Speaker 4: and it's truly more upside than Deshaun Watson in shoulder
[13:04] Speaker 4: Sanders right now has more, in my opinion, more upside
[13:07] Speaker 4: if you don't believe that you're getting him prepared enough
[13:11] Speaker 4: to run a road operation.
[13:14] Speaker 5: Like that. This is the alternative here, Yeah, what are
[13:18] Speaker 5: we doing?
[13:19] Speaker 1: Yeah? It's a bummer. And I think this team is
[13:22] Speaker 1: more talented than many of the Browns teams over certainly
[13:26] Speaker 1: like the like a decade ago when they were really
[13:28] Speaker 1: among the worst league, but even in terms of young
[13:30] Speaker 1: talent than the last few years. And they've mismanaged the
[13:33] Speaker 1: quarterback situation so bad because ultimately should here when you
[13:37] Speaker 1: watch that tape, wasn't that good this week? And he
[13:39] Speaker 1: takes a long time to process. He is a mid
[13:42] Speaker 1: round pick level second year quarterback to me, where I
[13:45] Speaker 1: think if he has a good career it'll be as
[13:48] Speaker 1: a backup and sometimes starter, and you shouldn't see what
[13:51] Speaker 1: you have in him. They drafted a quarterback they preferred
[13:53] Speaker 1: over him two rounds before Dylan Gabriel, who wasn't even
[13:56] Speaker 1: in the mix here. So as an organization, Andrew Berry
[14:00] Speaker 1: has to wear all the decisions that they've made, even
[14:03] Speaker 1: since Deshaun Watson. Let's move on and let's get to
[14:05] Speaker 1: the rest of the league. We had a nice update here,
[14:08] Speaker 1: Jordan when we talked to Ashton Genty on our Sunday
[14:12] Speaker 1: night show. The Raiders are praying and everything looks terrible,
[14:17] Speaker 1: and it's part of the reason why I wanted to
[14:18] Speaker 1: do just a quick news show today is because we
[14:20] Speaker 1: have a positive Ashton Genty update and that it's an
[14:23] Speaker 1: ankle injury. The timeline right now is uncertain, but the team,
[14:28] Speaker 1: according to Ian Rappaport, does not believe it is a
[14:31] Speaker 1: long term injury.
[14:32] Speaker 4: What a relief too, because all the reports that were
[14:35] Speaker 4: coming out in the moment were dire, right Like, I'm genuinely,
[14:41] Speaker 4: legitimately worried about Ashton Janty's well being at that point
[14:46] Speaker 4: when these things happen, and I mean, it's a relief
[14:50] Speaker 4: and I think too.
[14:51] Speaker 5: I'm really excited.
[14:52] Speaker 4: I hope that he plays gets back out there sooner
[14:55] Speaker 4: rather than later. These can be fickle injuries, but especially
[14:59] Speaker 4: from what I saw and I was doing part of
[15:02] Speaker 4: my trading camp tour, what I saw at the Raiders
[15:03] Speaker 4: joint practices against the Texans, getting him involved in the
[15:07] Speaker 4: passing game, and getting him much more involved in the
[15:09] Speaker 4: passing game, in the screen game, and all of these things,
[15:12] Speaker 4: getting him to space, catching and running.
[15:14] Speaker 5: Like, I'm so excited to see it.
[15:15] Speaker 4: So I'm happy for him that he avoided what sounds
[15:18] Speaker 4: like something way that could have been or looked at
[15:20] Speaker 4: least like it was way more serious.
[15:22] Speaker 1: Right, There's all sorts of different types of ankle injuries.
[15:24] Speaker 1: Jeremiah Love is coming off a high ankle spraining that
[15:26] Speaker 1: could keep him out for the beginning of the season.
[15:28] Speaker 1: We don't have all the details yet, but I did
[15:31] Speaker 1: some poking around. I don't think it's crossed off yet
[15:35] Speaker 1: that gent misses weak one, but we don't know. It's
[15:37] Speaker 1: these types of injuries, and I think the timeline will
[15:40] Speaker 1: be spelled out more. The bigger thing is they need
[15:43] Speaker 1: to figure out how to run the ball consistently. It's
[15:45] Speaker 1: an offensive line where they're still figuring out who the
[15:47] Speaker 1: starters are going to be. Jackson Powers Johnson like still
[15:50] Speaker 1: not you know, sharing reps and everything.
[15:52] Speaker 3: It's a new system.
[15:52] Speaker 1: But I like Mike Washington, and I like the fact
[15:55] Speaker 1: that Genti will be back early enough. If you're like
[15:57] Speaker 1: me and you're draft in your fantasy league tonight, well
[16:01] Speaker 1: just you know, I would just avoid the whole thing
[16:03] Speaker 1: or take Mike Washington. At some point, we have breaking
[16:06] Speaker 1: news on this show that I don't know if you
[16:09] Speaker 1: even know if you've checked your text there, and our
[16:12] Speaker 1: producer Eric Roberts is so on top of things, I
[16:15] Speaker 1: don't know if he's going to have a graphic if
[16:18] Speaker 1: you're watching us on YouTube.
[16:19] Speaker 3: Oh look at that sound breaking news. The Houston Texans.
[16:27] Speaker 1: Are making the trade that everyone, including myself, but I
[16:30] Speaker 1: was hardly the only one was saying they should make
[16:34] Speaker 1: Keyshaun Boody going from New England to the Patriots. Tom
[16:39] Speaker 1: Pelisero is the first insider that we see with the news.
[16:44] Speaker 1: It is for safety Jalen Read not believed to be
[16:51] Speaker 1: a big factor for the Patriots this year and a
[16:53] Speaker 1: draft pick. Sources tell Tom Pelsero now of the Bringer,
[16:58] Speaker 1: and I love it when teams make a trade that
[17:03] Speaker 1: just makes sense. Jordan, this makes the Texans better. And
[17:08] Speaker 1: the fact that it says and a draft pick, I
[17:12] Speaker 1: guess it depends where he's getting the information from, so
[17:15] Speaker 1: I won't speculate too much, but that tends to make
[17:17] Speaker 1: me think it's a Day three draft pick either way.
[17:20] Speaker 1: What do you think about the fit and the trade
[17:22] Speaker 1: Kishon Booty to the Texans.
[17:24] Speaker 4: Well, perhaps or maybe there's some conditions to it. The
[17:26] Speaker 4: fact that there's a player attached to it too makes
[17:30] Speaker 4: me kind of think you're on the right track there.
[17:33] Speaker 5: I love this.
[17:33] Speaker 4: I mean it was the obvious thing we had heard
[17:36] Speaker 4: since training camp began, not only that Kishon Boudy was
[17:39] Speaker 4: playing really really well, but that also he might be tradeable,
[17:44] Speaker 4: especially with AJ Brown's arrival in New England, and so
[17:47] Speaker 4: the two front offices know each other really really well.
[17:50] Speaker 4: There's a lot of crossover on that Texan staff from
[17:54] Speaker 4: former eras of the Patriots, and it just I love
[17:58] Speaker 4: this For CJ. Stroud, I think this may so much
[18:00] Speaker 4: sense in this offense, which is sort of like an
[18:04] Speaker 4: amalgamation of New England's previous iterations of its schemes and
[18:09] Speaker 4: what the Rams did at one point. So it makes
[18:12] Speaker 4: so much sense. This is a you are going to
[18:14] Speaker 4: come in and start for us right away. Good for
[18:17] Speaker 4: Kishon Booty too, because he'll get he'll get more he'll
[18:19] Speaker 4: get a lot.
[18:20] Speaker 1: Of looks, and he'll get more money potentially in free agency. Yeah,
[18:24] Speaker 1: if he's productive, and he would have been in good
[18:27] Speaker 1: spots with the Patriots. But to Mario Douglas was their
[18:29] Speaker 1: clear three. You know by the money, it's obvious that
[18:32] Speaker 1: aj Brown and Romeo Dobs are one and two, and
[18:34] Speaker 1: so you're the fourth receiver and you're going to be
[18:36] Speaker 1: worked in. Whereas in Houston for fans who aren't on
[18:41] Speaker 1: top of this news every day, Jayden Higgins is it
[18:44] Speaker 1: was a second year player. Is a second year player
[18:46] Speaker 1: that is out for the entire season with the torn
[18:48] Speaker 1: ACL has some similarity size wise, I think they're different
[18:52] Speaker 1: players in terms of Kishon Booty is just more of
[18:54] Speaker 1: like a downfield ball winner, contested catch guy, vertical threat
[18:59] Speaker 1: despite not being like the biggest burner.
[19:01] Speaker 3: That's just how he wins.
[19:02] Speaker 1: But on some level, they're both physical receivers and he
[19:06] Speaker 1: can replace part of what Jayden Higgins was going to
[19:09] Speaker 1: do in this offense, and tankdal still hasn't practiced fully.
[19:12] Speaker 1: Jalen Noel was a guy they took in the middle
[19:14] Speaker 1: rounds last year that was up and down as a rookie.
[19:17] Speaker 1: He hasn't been practicing all Campbell though he did recently return,
[19:19] Speaker 1: so that's a good sign for him. And after that,
[19:22] Speaker 1: it's like it's role player types that have been kicking
[19:25] Speaker 1: around their roster for a while, Guys that make a
[19:27] Speaker 1: lot more sense as wide receiver four or wide receiver five.
[19:30] Speaker 1: Like I think kish On Booty is not going to
[19:32] Speaker 1: get a long term extension from Houston, but he's going
[19:35] Speaker 1: to have a really good chance to have an excellent
[19:38] Speaker 1: season and make a lot of money in free agency,
[19:41] Speaker 1: or who knows, maybe the Texans decide like he is
[19:44] Speaker 1: a fit with US long term. Nico Collins is relatively
[19:47] Speaker 1: affordable for a wide receiver one. Maybe we can get
[19:49] Speaker 1: a relatively affordable like wide receiver two Slash three and
[19:54] Speaker 1: Booty ends up signing their long term. But I don't
[19:56] Speaker 1: think that's going to happen right away.
[19:57] Speaker 4: Updated terms, It's nice to see the guys working sort
[20:01] Speaker 4: of together again, but I know they are at different
[20:02] Speaker 4: companies now. But Ian Rappaport is saying it's a twenty
[20:06] Speaker 4: twenty eighth seventh rounder, so definitely a later pick, but
[20:12] Speaker 4: like I mentioned, a player being involved in that too
[20:15] Speaker 4: does make a difference there. Also, I do want to
[20:18] Speaker 4: point out I love seeing this for Tom. They've already
[20:22] Speaker 4: got him the breaking news graphics at the Ringer.
[20:26] Speaker 5: They're slick looking.
[20:27] Speaker 4: I have to say, so good for everybody you know,
[20:30] Speaker 4: getting and getting that news done.
[20:33] Speaker 5: Thank you.
[20:34] Speaker 1: Good for us that we timed this show for the
[20:37] Speaker 1: news that happen right away, which is why I'm literally
[20:40] Speaker 1: tweeting it back out, just to let people know we're
[20:43] Speaker 1: hitting the hitting the booty trade right now.
[20:47] Speaker 4: As Eric Roberts, our producer, says, everything is coming up.
[20:51] Speaker 5: Greg, you gotta love that news. He's a newsman.
[20:54] Speaker 4: Booty is massive for They're like, how you can hear
[20:58] Speaker 4: me cracking up in the background of that drop.
[21:02] Speaker 5: That's so funny. Oh my god.
[21:04] Speaker 3: I know I'm a homer.
[21:05] Speaker 1: But we did our all underrated team last year, me
[21:08] Speaker 1: and Oli Connolly on one of our Saturday shows and
[21:10] Speaker 1: we both had kishon Booty last year. I thought it
[21:12] Speaker 1: was a really good Like if you just look at
[21:14] Speaker 1: the stats, it's not that crazy, but man, he had
[21:17] Speaker 1: a ton of big plays, like he was like maybe
[21:20] Speaker 1: the most reliable overall receiver for them and really valuable.
[21:25] Speaker 1: And it just goes to show teams are always almost
[21:29] Speaker 1: always full of it. When they said, well, we're not
[21:31] Speaker 1: trying to trade him, we're not calling around, We're we're
[21:35] Speaker 1: you know, we're going to keep them unless we get
[21:36] Speaker 1: great value, they got no value. They just decided it's
[21:40] Speaker 1: a roster crunch. We have a lot of receivers. We like,
[21:44] Speaker 1: we're just gonna take anything for him because this is
[21:47] Speaker 1: essentially nothing and in good for him but not good
[21:49] Speaker 1: for the Patriots ultimately.
[21:51] Speaker 5: Can can you just not like minimize that they sent
[21:55] Speaker 5: another play?
[21:55] Speaker 4: Like I understand what you're saying, Greg, but sometimes you
[21:58] Speaker 4: say things and it's like other human being is also
[22:01] Speaker 4: involved in this trade. So like, let's not you know,
[22:04] Speaker 4: it's just sometimes just the way you say things.
[22:07] Speaker 1: Okay, not what you say. Let's I get that a lot.
[22:11] Speaker 1: Let's circle back. We'll see maybe Jalen Reid will have
[22:14] Speaker 1: a big impact on the Texans, maybe he'll make the team.
[22:17] Speaker 1: I don't know if he's even if a easy guy
[22:19] Speaker 1: that would make the team or not. I'm not prepared
[22:21] Speaker 1: for that. Right now, let's move on to the rest
[22:23] Speaker 1: of the news before we get out of there. But
[22:24] Speaker 1: that is great. I know we are both high on
[22:27] Speaker 1: the Texans this year. We're going to have our big
[22:29] Speaker 1: Super Bowl preview episode before the season. I think it's
[22:32] Speaker 1: fair to say they are in the mix of teams
[22:35] Speaker 1: we might be predicting to make it there.
[22:36] Speaker 3: And this was one Jalen Reid.
[22:38] Speaker 4: Also, just to be clear, Jalen Reid's going to the Patriots,
[22:41] Speaker 4: not the Texans.
[22:42] Speaker 3: So this is what happens with live.
[22:45] Speaker 4: You're well, you're doing a lot of things at once,
[22:47] Speaker 4: and sometimes I just let you roll right through. But yes,
[22:50] Speaker 4: this don't don't let me roll through if I'm you're
[22:54] Speaker 4: doing a lot of things at once. But yes, it
[22:57] Speaker 4: to me, it makes sense because I think the Patriots
[22:59] Speaker 4: were a little concerned about their safety depth.
[23:01] Speaker 5: So well, you know fine.
[23:05] Speaker 1: Our guy Mike Brabele said, it us a transition to that, like,
[23:09] Speaker 1: they have no depth. We are not confident in the
[23:12] Speaker 1: depth of this team. They do not have depth at cornerback,
[23:15] Speaker 1: they do not have depth at safety, they do not
[23:17] Speaker 1: have I guess they have depth on the edge. It's
[23:20] Speaker 1: just not good and then on the offensive line.
[23:22] Speaker 3: So a good point.
[23:23] Speaker 1: And if you there's a lot of good defensive backs
[23:25] Speaker 1: that maybe couldn't make the Texans. Jalen Reid is a
[23:29] Speaker 1: sixth round pick from a year ago that did make
[23:32] Speaker 1: it through a year with the Texans and is a
[23:34] Speaker 1: second year player from Penn State. We might as well
[23:37] Speaker 1: hit our Patriots news here that Mike Rable was on
[23:41] Speaker 1: local radio today and I just thought it was interesting
[23:43] Speaker 1: one of those quotes I just wanted to point out
[23:45] Speaker 1: when they asked him if him talking about the lack
[23:47] Speaker 1: of depth with a shot at the front office essentially,
[23:50] Speaker 1: and he said, we are the front office.
[23:54] Speaker 3: We are making the decisions.
[23:55] Speaker 1: And I love that and I think it helps people
[23:58] Speaker 1: understand Mike ray place in the Patriots.
[24:01] Speaker 4: You know what I really would have loved And if
[24:03] Speaker 4: you were on that program particularly great. I just know
[24:06] Speaker 4: this is what you would have asked. Next, who is we?
[24:09] Speaker 4: Can you be specific?
[24:10] Speaker 3: Hmm?
[24:12] Speaker 1: Great question, And I think the answer is a combination
[24:18] Speaker 1: of Mike Rabel and then his guy he brought from
[24:22] Speaker 1: Tennessee whose name escapes me right.
[24:23] Speaker 5: Now, Ryan Cowden.
[24:25] Speaker 1: Ryan Cowden, those are the two key ones, and then
[24:28] Speaker 1: the rest of the front office, which includes Elliott Wolfe,
[24:30] Speaker 1: who kind of has the front facing job. But if
[24:33] Speaker 1: I had to guess, I think it's number three in
[24:35] Speaker 1: that order. But to me, I am interested in how
[24:37] Speaker 1: front offices work, and I've long believed that Mike Rabel
[24:42] Speaker 1: is not that far in terms of structure from what
[24:45] Speaker 1: Bill Belichick was back in the day, like the clear number,
[24:47] Speaker 1: like like Andy Reid even is now the clear number one.
[24:50] Speaker 1: He's making really important personnel decisions. He has a lot
[24:52] Speaker 1: of help. But we are the front office, and we
[24:55] Speaker 1: includes Mike Rabel. All right, let's give some positive patriots.
[24:59] Speaker 1: Christian Dolls back at practice, practicing fully, not hurt. He
[25:03] Speaker 1: was not holding in because he is back now that
[25:06] Speaker 1: he's healthy again, and we still haven't seen that contract happen,
[25:10] Speaker 1: despite Devin Witherspoon getting paid. Let's hit the Jed York news.
[25:14] Speaker 1: The forty nine Ers owner Jed York was arrested over
[25:18] Speaker 1: the weekend. This is according to the Associated Press in
[25:21] Speaker 1: Ohio and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly
[25:24] Speaker 1: conduct and possessing criminal tools. York was arrested Sunday, it
[25:28] Speaker 1: was an East Palestine, Ohio and released after posting a
[25:32] Speaker 1: five thousand dollars bond. He was sentenced to one day
[25:36] Speaker 1: in jail for both offenses, to be served concurrently and
[25:39] Speaker 1: credited with one day served when he pleaded no contest.
[25:41] Speaker 1: That was on Monday morning. That's when the news came out.
[25:44] Speaker 1: He was also fined eleven fifty dollars. NFL spokesman Brian
[25:48] Speaker 1: McCarthy already has a quote on it and says we
[25:51] Speaker 1: are aware of the matter, which will be reviewed under
[25:54] Speaker 1: the Personal Conduct Policy. So, like a lot of arrests,
[26:00] Speaker 1: we kind of leave it there and we wait to
[26:02] Speaker 1: see what the NFL is going to do in this situation.
[26:06] Speaker 1: Back to the field, I thought it was interesting, Jordan.
[26:12] Speaker 1: On Monday, a couple of items happened. The Steelers activate
[26:16] Speaker 1: Jalen Ramsey from pup list, good news, hasn't been practicing,
[26:21] Speaker 1: and he immediately says, the Steelers got to pay it
[26:24] Speaker 1: my guy, Joey Porter Junior, just like make it happen,
[26:27] Speaker 1: like we got to get him back on the field.
[26:29] Speaker 1: Pay Joey Porter Jr. Despite the fact that the Steelers
[26:32] Speaker 1: had been saying all along, oh, Joey Porter Junior has
[26:34] Speaker 1: an injury, it's not a hold in Later that morning,
[26:38] Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy also says the quiet part out loud and
[26:42] Speaker 1: recognizes that they are at a compact a contract impass
[26:45] Speaker 1: with Joey Porter Junior. So just sort of straightening things
[26:48] Speaker 1: out and a player they really need. I wouldn't panic
[26:52] Speaker 1: about it, but he's probably waiting to see what's happening
[26:54] Speaker 1: with Christian Gonzales and they want him back on the field.
[26:56] Speaker 5: Yeah, it's probably all gonna work out fine.
[26:59] Speaker 4: But one thing about Jalen Ramsey is the second he
[27:02] Speaker 4: is back to doing press conferences, he makes the Steelers
[27:05] Speaker 4: more interesting. So I'm excited about this, and on the
[27:08] Speaker 4: Joey Porter Junior contract, I don't see any reason to
[27:11] Speaker 4: believe that they don't get something like that done. He's
[27:14] Speaker 4: clearly a part of their young core for whatever happens
[27:18] Speaker 4: after this season.
[27:19] Speaker 1: He is not necessarily like the exact same fit in
[27:25] Speaker 1: the defense they want to run now, and so I
[27:28] Speaker 1: do wonder it's a they have so much invested in
[27:31] Speaker 1: their defense. I agree, of course they want to sign them.
[27:35] Speaker 1: They're negotiating with them, Yeah, but it could be something
[27:38] Speaker 1: that the price is a difficult one to reach with
[27:40] Speaker 1: them because it's a new system. They want to see
[27:42] Speaker 1: him in and they're the most expensive defense in the
[27:44] Speaker 1: league by far, and they're going to continue to be
[27:47] Speaker 1: And they just paid Keanu Beten, who they kind of prioritize.
[27:50] Speaker 1: So it could be a tricky one just for a
[27:52] Speaker 1: guy that I think has been like a little up
[27:54] Speaker 1: and down and it's a new coach, new system just.
[27:56] Speaker 4: Well, but I think that I think that doesn't give
[28:00] Speaker 4: Patrick Graham enough credit for what he can do with
[28:04] Speaker 4: players with new defensive coordinator. Yeah, it's technically a new scheme,
[28:07] Speaker 4: but Patrick Graham, We've talked about it on this show.
[28:10] Speaker 4: He doesn't necessarily adhere to any like set. He's very like,
[28:16] Speaker 4: he can mold things very very well. He can shape
[28:18] Speaker 4: his playbook and his schemes probably as good as anybody
[28:21] Speaker 4: we have right now coaching, especially on that side of
[28:24] Speaker 4: the ball, and hasn't had a chance to show it.
[28:27] Speaker 4: Hope he gets a chance to show it with Joey
[28:29] Speaker 4: Porter Junior. And he's always it's a very, very very
[28:32] Speaker 4: tired cliche where it's like we're gonna do what's best
[28:36] Speaker 4: for our players, and we're going to put our players
[28:37] Speaker 4: in position to be successful. Patrick Graham's actually a coach
[28:40] Speaker 4: who actually lives that, and so I don't really that's
[28:44] Speaker 4: less of a concern to me the scheme stuff than
[28:46] Speaker 4: it is. You need to have at least some sort
[28:49] Speaker 4: of a contingency plan after the bubble breaks on this
[28:52] Speaker 4: entire roster. And I think on the offensive side you've
[28:55] Speaker 4: seen them do it with a couple of younger players,
[28:58] Speaker 4: and on defense they're want to have like quote unquoi,
[29:01] Speaker 4: I always say this weight bearing walls anyway, yep. So
[29:04] Speaker 4: to me, I do think it really is just waiting
[29:06] Speaker 4: to see what's up with Christian Gonzalez.
[29:08] Speaker 5: Honestly that that could be it.
[29:10] Speaker 1: And they look they've done a good job this offseason.
[29:12] Speaker 1: They signed Nick Herberg. I think that contract is going
[29:14] Speaker 1: to age really well. They signed Keanu Benton. I think
[29:17] Speaker 1: he could have a breakout. Y're a good young player.
[29:19] Speaker 1: We'll see if they get Porter Junior Son, who's you know,
[29:21] Speaker 1: great in man coverage. But there's only so much man
[29:25] Speaker 1: match If.
[29:26] Speaker 5: You play man, well, you could play match zone. Well,
[29:28] Speaker 5: just saying yeah.
[29:29] Speaker 1: Of course, final nuggets today as we we get out
[29:33] Speaker 1: of here on a Monday, the Eagles have Mackay Lemon
[29:35] Speaker 1: back at practice. I'm just including these as little nuggets. Finally,
[29:38] Speaker 1: that's the first time they've had their first three receivers
[29:40] Speaker 1: all practicing in like a month, so that is really
[29:42] Speaker 1: great to see. I do think this is the time
[29:44] Speaker 1: of year, like, okay, it's go time. Players get back
[29:46] Speaker 1: to practice if you want to get ready for Week one.
[29:49] Speaker 1: So I mentioned Christian Gonzales, Pukinakua and Miles Garrett are
[29:54] Speaker 1: still out. You know, it's been a couple of weeks now.
[29:56] Speaker 1: They did not return to practice on Monday. That's you know,
[29:59] Speaker 1: growing concern, nothing panic about, but yeah, I'm sure they
[30:02] Speaker 1: would like to have him back on the field. The
[30:04] Speaker 1: Saints watched a kicker battle between our favorite Irishman Charlie
[30:08] Speaker 1: Smith and Tanner Brown and unfortunately the reports are from
[30:12] Speaker 1: our friends the Saints block party that Smith has been
[30:14] Speaker 1: struggling in practice and the preseason wasn't great. I think
[30:18] Speaker 1: proved to be true because they watched that battle and
[30:19] Speaker 1: then they choose neither. They signed Daniel Carlson and the
[30:22] Speaker 1: expectation is now Daniel Carlson is just going to be
[30:24] Speaker 1: their kicker, but we will see. There also was a
[30:28] Speaker 1: trade they traded for Zamir White. They traded Dion Jones
[30:32] Speaker 1: for Zamir White. That was to the forty nine ers.
[30:34] Speaker 1: I think both of those guys are probably long shots
[30:36] Speaker 1: to make their respective rosters, so don't need to linger
[30:38] Speaker 1: on that one too much. And then disappointing on Sunday night,
[30:40] Speaker 1: Bud Clark as we were taping, broke his ankle. He
[30:43] Speaker 1: was a second round pick for the Seahawks. So just
[30:46] Speaker 1: like a little less depth there. We didn't have you
[30:49] Speaker 1: for the preseason show. You did a great job broadcasting
[30:54] Speaker 1: the rams. You're up there with Brenda Song. I don't
[30:56] Speaker 1: know if you had any like super hot takeaway. Yeah,
[31:01] Speaker 1: there we go as we get going here from from
[31:04] Speaker 1: preseason week two or your experience or anything.
[31:07] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's been so much fun. Also, she
[31:10] Speaker 4: is so nice. I just have to say, I know
[31:12] Speaker 4: I sound like a total fangirl, and that's okay.
[31:15] Speaker 5: She is so, so, so, so nice and she was
[31:18] Speaker 5: having a blast.
[31:19] Speaker 4: It was really fun to see somebody who normally has
[31:22] Speaker 4: people kind of all around her, you know, being a
[31:25] Speaker 4: fan of her watching her truly like be a football fan.
[31:29] Speaker 4: Like it was just like, really, it was a really
[31:31] Speaker 4: joyful experience.
[31:33] Speaker 5: Hot takes not really.
[31:35] Speaker 4: I liked how you guys broke down the Stetson Bennett stuff.
[31:38] Speaker 4: He's just a gamer, you know, like he just it
[31:41] Speaker 4: takes a minute and then once he starts feeling it
[31:44] Speaker 4: and just sort of cuts it loose, like you know.
[31:46] Speaker 5: He could play ball. I mean, I don't know why
[31:51] Speaker 5: they would.
[31:51] Speaker 4: I don't know why they would trade him honestly, Like
[31:54] Speaker 4: he's he really they people are forgetting. I guess that
[31:58] Speaker 4: they gave him that off year to kind of help
[32:01] Speaker 4: regather himself into being a pro player, and like they've
[32:07] Speaker 4: invested a lot of of.
[32:09] Speaker 5: Energy into it. So I mean, I don't know. That's
[32:12] Speaker 5: just my opinion though.
[32:13] Speaker 4: But and then I saw the Bud Clark thing last night,
[32:15] Speaker 4: and I was sad to see that because I think,
[32:17] Speaker 4: like many people, I was really really excited to see
[32:21] Speaker 4: what Mike McDonald and company could could help, you know,
[32:25] Speaker 4: help him reach his potential, which I think is pretty high.
[32:28] Speaker 4: So tough tough scene to see that. So thank you
[32:31] Speaker 4: to James for this nice comment.
