[0:00] Speaker 1: 12 of the NFL's finest quarterbacks have left the comfort
[0:05] Speaker 1: of their stadiums and luxury suites for.
[0:07] Speaker 2: The adventure of a lifetime.
[0:10] Speaker 1: These gridiron heroes are used to leading their teams on
[0:12] Speaker 1: the field, but can they outplay, outlast, and outthrow each
[0:16] Speaker 1: other in the ultimate survival challenge? You leave everything you
[0:20] Speaker 1: have for the guy beside you.
[0:21] Speaker 2: We find a way to win the game no matter what.
[0:24] Speaker 3: Let's go, baby.
[0:25] Speaker 1: The stakes are high, and the competition is fierce. Only
[0:28] Speaker 1: one can claim the title of the ultimate survivor. Who
[0:30] Speaker 1: will rise to the top, and who will be sacked?
[0:33] Speaker 4: They wrote me off.
[0:34] Speaker 2: I ain't right back, though.
[0:35] Speaker 4: That's the problem.
[0:36] Speaker 2: I ain't right back. Let's go. This is Quarterback Island.
[0:41] Speaker 5: Welcome to season three of Quarterback Island.
[0:47] Speaker 4: I'm Greg Rosenthal.
[0:48] Speaker 5: Our producer, Eric Roberts, sent us a group text. And
[0:51] Speaker 5: when I say us, I mean Colleen Wolfe, Jordan Rodrigue,
[0:53] Speaker 5: and Steve Weiss. The core four on QB Island. And
[0:57] Speaker 5: that text said, the island is calling. New season.
[1:02] Speaker 6: Yes.
[1:02] Speaker 4: Greg cracked me already.
[1:04] Speaker 2: Greg cracked me. That was one.
[1:06] Speaker 5: For everyone watching on YouTube, the first time my hands
[1:09] Speaker 5: got too excited and I hit Weiss right in the face.
[1:11] Speaker 4: I could not have been more fired.
[1:13] Speaker 5: Up to have all my friends back in the studio
[1:15] Speaker 5: for another season of quarterback.
[1:16] Speaker 3: Hey, great to see you guys. It's like I, you know,
[1:19] Speaker 3: never left.
[1:20] Speaker 7: I'm so excited. Quarterback Island, we got Connie Fox back.
[1:24] Speaker 7: We got Steve Weiss back. Summer of Connie has now
[1:27] Speaker 7: turned into Quarterback Island Fall.
[1:29] Speaker 4: You have a hat today, Connie. I do. Endless summer,
[1:33] Speaker 4: but it's not endless. No, but I'm.
[1:36] Speaker 6: Trying to make it an endless summer, but I saw
[1:39] Speaker 6: this in a garage and I was like, hey, can
[1:40] Speaker 6: I borrow that hat for the podcast?
[1:42] Speaker 3: I'll give it right back.
[1:43] Speaker 2: Just a random garage. So many questions about that garage.
[1:46] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[1:47] Speaker 3: Many questions.
[1:48] Speaker 2: Okay.
[1:49] Speaker 4: Steve Weiss, of course. We are in the house. Doubleheader
[1:52] Speaker 4: today was on Good Morning Football.
[1:54] Speaker 3: Literally, because you just hit him in the head with.
[1:55] Speaker 4: Your hand today.
[1:56] Speaker 5: ESPN employee and now a QB Island specialist here.
[2:01] Speaker 2: A specialist? I thought I was part of that.
[2:03] Speaker 4: For NFL Daily.
[2:04] Speaker 5: I'm just saying, you come in here, you come in here,
[2:07] Speaker 5: and this is what you do best.
[2:09] Speaker 2: Let's go.
[2:10] Speaker 4: And Jordan Roderig, of course, who was.
[2:12] Speaker 5: Just on a show less than 24 hours ago, recapping cuts,
[2:15] Speaker 5: but also an executive producer on this show. Here's what
[2:19] Speaker 5: Quarterback Island is for people who are just tuning in.
[2:23] Speaker 5: It is an exercise where we determine the quarterbacks who
[2:27] Speaker 5: define the position. You can interpret that however you wish.
[2:33] Speaker 3: And it never goes wrong. Uh, the quarterback, the challenge here.
[2:37] Speaker 5: That define the NFL position, you know, that is most
[2:41] Speaker 5: important in all of sports. But one thing that's a
[2:44] Speaker 5: little bit of a twist on this first episode is
[2:47] Speaker 5: we're starting from scratch.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Okay.
[2:48] Speaker 5: So new Island, you know, you heard Gino Smith at
[2:51] Speaker 5: the beginning there. It, the, That was taped when Gino
[2:55] Speaker 5: maybe had a more prominent part.
[2:57] Speaker 4: Of the NFL.
[2:58] Speaker 3: Shows you how long the show has been going.
[3:00] Speaker 4: Ecosphere. I mean, we might have to update that at
[3:02] Speaker 4: some point. But who knows?
[3:04] Speaker 5: He is a candidate as a starting quarterback to start
[3:07] Speaker 5: this season on Quarterback Island. Jordan, as an executive producer,
[3:11] Speaker 5: how do you look at this first episode where we
[3:14] Speaker 5: determine the first 12 differently than the rest of the year?
[3:16] Speaker 7: Well, I know the island will shrink over time. I
[3:20] Speaker 7: want to remind everybody that the Riptide is available for
[3:24] Speaker 7: usage for all parties. The Riptide is a move that
[3:28] Speaker 7: every one of us has. We only have one of
[3:31] Speaker 7: them per entire season of Quarterback Island. And it is
[3:34] Speaker 7: where we can argue and just autonomously pull somebody off
[3:38] Speaker 7: the island.
[3:39] Speaker 5: Also known as a ripcord, some people call it that.
[3:42] Speaker 3: I was thinking we should introduce a ripcord as well.
[3:45] Speaker 3: It is super, super not the ripcord.
[3:48] Speaker 2: What a rip off.
[3:49] Speaker 4: So you could use that in this show.
[3:51] Speaker 7: And then the group must collectively argue who the person
[3:56] Speaker 7: taking that place is.
[3:57] Speaker 5: Yes. To get on the island, we vote. Four votes,
[4:01] Speaker 5: all equal. We have some placards that say yes or no.
[4:06] Speaker 5: It's by majority. If you get three votes, you're on
[4:10] Speaker 5: the island. If you want to table it, or if
[4:13] Speaker 5: we come up 2-2, you're kind of tabled until later.
[4:18] Speaker 5: And my question to start for throwing out there, are
[4:21] Speaker 5: we sure we want 12?
[4:23] Speaker 3: You're already shrinking the island. No one's on it yet.
[4:27] Speaker 2: I'm telling you, we might need 15. Look, this is
[4:29] Speaker 2: the first time we started the season where we haven't
[4:31] Speaker 2: had an injury, right? Jordan, the Jordan, one of the
[4:33] Speaker 2: Jordan rules is if somebody is injured, they are automatically
[4:37] Speaker 2: not available. So we've got healthy quarterbacks now.
[4:40] Speaker 4: And I just like, is this like a participant?
[4:43] Speaker 5: I kind of got to 10 and I was like,
[4:44] Speaker 5: are there even enough worthy to define the position?
[4:49] Speaker 3: Here's the thing.
[4:49] Speaker 7: I knew where you were going with it, Steve, and
[4:52] Speaker 7: I appreciate where you were going with it. More inclusivity
[4:55] Speaker 7: on quarterback Island where Greg, we know was going with
[4:58] Speaker 7: it as he wants cuts immediately. I want it to
[5:00] Speaker 7: be exclusive.
[5:01] Speaker 4: I want it to be a good show.
[5:03] Speaker 5: You know, it just felt like a, if everyone can
[5:05] Speaker 5: get on, there's no, there's no tension, but you seem
[5:08] Speaker 5: like you guys want 12.
[5:09] Speaker 2: Yes. Oh, we want to.
[5:11] Speaker 3: You see how he did.
[5:12] Speaker 2: Okay.
[5:13] Speaker 3: I think we have to start with.
[5:14] Speaker 5: Okay, we'll start with 12. We'll start with 12. Could
[5:17] Speaker 5: always adjust it as the season.
[5:18] Speaker 7: We just got a handle on the rules, people.
[5:21] Speaker 3: Let's not change the rule.
[5:23] Speaker 5: Let's before we dive into who's not going to make
[5:26] Speaker 5: the island. Let's just remind the listeners and the viewers
[5:30] Speaker 5: who ended last season on the island. And this is
[5:34] Speaker 5: in no particular order. except for the first man on
[5:37] Speaker 5: the list, Josh Allen, who I just wanted to give
[5:39] Speaker 5: a special star to.
[5:43] Speaker 4: Eric gave us a great.
[5:46] Speaker 5: Graphical representation of everything that's ever happened on Quarterback Island.
[5:53] Speaker 5: Josh Allen's the only man who's never been off Quarterback Island.
[5:56] Speaker 2: Oh, all right. So we're good.
[5:57] Speaker 4: That says something about him.
[5:59] Speaker 5: But it was Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, who
[6:04] Speaker 5: is one of Three players, including Justin Herbert, who's finished
[6:10] Speaker 5: each of the two seasons on Quarterback Island. So them
[6:13] Speaker 5: two and Josh Allen. Brock Purdy was there. Justin Herbert,
[6:16] Speaker 5: who I mentioned.
[6:18] Speaker 4: Drake May. And then two players in Trevor Lawrence and Caleb.
[6:21] Speaker 5: Williams, who actually made their Quarterback Island debuts, I believe,
[6:25] Speaker 5: on the very last episode of last season. And they
[6:28] Speaker 5: finished it out there. Now, that's only eight quarterbacks. The
[6:32] Speaker 5: island shrinks significantly. as the season goes on, but we're
[6:36] Speaker 5: starting from scratch here on today's show.
[6:39] Speaker 4: Just wanted to give water levels.
[6:40] Speaker 3: They're rising.
[6:41] Speaker 6: So the Island, it shrinks. So we need to pull
[6:44] Speaker 6: quarterbacks off. So we can't start there, Greg. We need
[6:46] Speaker 6: to have some land for everyone to be there.
[6:48] Speaker 5: And we're going to start negatively because Eric, it'd be
[6:51] Speaker 5: just good to cross.
[6:53] Speaker 4: Off some people first.
[6:54] Speaker 2: I think he's right.
[6:55] Speaker 4: So we'll get to the obvious ones. Who's on the Island. Yeah.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Come on.
[6:59] Speaker 5: He listed 32. quarterbacks for 32 teams. We actually don't
[7:04] Speaker 5: know who's starting for the Falcons, which I think immediately
[7:07] Speaker 5: eliminates them.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Yes.
[7:09] Speaker 5: But I'm going to just throw out a number of
[7:13] Speaker 5: quarterbacks that I don't think we need to discuss at
[7:15] Speaker 5: length or vote on. If we want to have You know,
[7:18] Speaker 5: a few comments on these quarterbacks.
[7:20] Speaker 7: Sure.
[7:20] Speaker 5: But here are the quarterbacks I would propose do not
[7:23] Speaker 5: get voted on today and are just a no.
[7:25] Speaker 2: Okay.
[7:26] Speaker 5: Malik Willis of the Dolphins. Geno Smith of the Jets.
[7:30] Speaker 5: Deshaun Watson is the week one starter for the Browns.
[7:33] Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers of the Steelers.
[7:35] Speaker 4: Cam Ward.
[7:37] Speaker 5: Kirk Cousins, presumably the starter of the Raiders. Jackson Dart,
[7:41] Speaker 5: don't think he's quite at that level. Kyler Murray's an
[7:44] Speaker 5: interesting guy to keep an eye on this year. It'd
[7:46] Speaker 5: be tough to make an argument for him to start
[7:47] Speaker 5: the season to me. Jacoby Brissett, I'd put on this list.
[7:52] Speaker 5: And then, how about the entire NFC South?
[7:55] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[7:56] Speaker 4: Thank you.
[7:57] Speaker 2: I was like, let's not even bull skate around here.
[8:00] Speaker 2: Let's just wipe out our division.
[8:02] Speaker 6: Wow.
[8:03] Speaker 4: Now, Jordan, you said....
[8:06] Speaker 5: You were listening to the Greenlight podcast. Baker Mayfield was
[8:08] Speaker 5: on that. What was his quote today?
[8:10] Speaker 3: Well, I'm going to paraphrase it.
[8:11] Speaker 7: I could not quote him directly, but he said something
[8:14] Speaker 7: about how he has more chips now on his shoulder
[8:17] Speaker 7: to the point where his shoulders are getting heavier. But
[8:20] Speaker 7: he embraces chip watch, of course, you guys, because he's
[8:23] Speaker 7: Baker Mayfield. I agree with that. We should just wipe
[8:26] Speaker 7: the entire NFC South.
[8:28] Speaker 2: That's rude.
[8:28] Speaker 3: I agree with you here.
[8:29] Speaker 7: However, I do think he is absolutely going to be
[8:32] Speaker 7: a talking point All season for us, because if he
[8:35] Speaker 7: starts as strong as he did last season, he will
[8:38] Speaker 7: be in conversation to make it on the island. And
[8:40] Speaker 7: at least one of the segments, we do this quote
[8:42] Speaker 7: unquote quarterly through the course of the season. So he
[8:45] Speaker 7: would be in contention to maybe make the island at
[8:47] Speaker 7: that point. He fell off a cliff, you know, by
[8:50] Speaker 7: the middle of last season and he's just streaky in general.
[8:52] Speaker 7: So we really have to, to see, and he's, he's
[8:55] Speaker 7: one of the quarterbacks who I would think is off
[8:57] Speaker 7: right now.
[8:58] Speaker 3: But who we will be talking about.
[9:00] Speaker 6: I'd like to say that even though we started negatively,
[9:03] Speaker 6: I think that all of us want to see all
[9:05] Speaker 6: of the starting quarterbacks succeed in this league. So how
[9:08] Speaker 6: do you get Baker to succeed? You give him another chip.
[9:11] Speaker 6: And that's what this is. We put another chip on
[9:13] Speaker 6: the heavy shoulders because we want him on the island.
[9:17] Speaker 3: So this is what we're doing. It's a service to him.
[9:19] Speaker 3: What is weight to.
[9:19] Speaker 7: Some is wings for others.
[9:22] Speaker 3: Exactly.
[9:22] Speaker 4: That's beautiful. These are some of the messages.
[9:24] Speaker 2: Philosophically just inspiring.
[9:26] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[9:26] Speaker 4: Colleen Wolfe learned well.
[9:28] Speaker 3: Why is he just going to fall off his chair?
[9:29] Speaker 2: I'm sitting here like, is that what you're going to
[9:31] Speaker 2: tell his offensive coordinator?
[9:33] Speaker 3: Super not.
[9:35] Speaker 5: Is this some of the wisdom, Colleen, you learned while
[9:38] Speaker 5: camping through Oregon?
[9:40] Speaker 3: I'm a camper now, guys.
[9:41] Speaker 4: And Sedona.
[9:42] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[9:43] Speaker 2: Talking about.
[9:44] Speaker 6: You want to do some dispersed camping? I got some
[9:46] Speaker 6: great sites for you. I'll give you the coordinates.
[9:48] Speaker 3: Dispersed camping?
[9:49] Speaker 5: We'll tease this out over the course of Quarterback Island
[9:53] Speaker 5: and over the course of the season. We can announce
[9:55] Speaker 5: now that Colleen Wolfe is back. Not that she went anywhere.
[9:59] Speaker 3: I was worried. I thought that I maybe left. No,
[10:02] Speaker 3: I saw that I was back, but I'm back.
[10:05] Speaker 5: So the NFL media PR did announce Colleen Wolfe is back.
[10:09] Speaker 5: Technically you were never really gone. No, you're here and
[10:12] Speaker 5: you're going to be with us weekly on NFL.
[10:14] Speaker 6: But now I expect every season that I start to
[10:17] Speaker 6: have a press release.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Well, I was about to say, This was a first.
[10:22] Speaker 2: The promo that NFL media gave anything. I was like, wait,
[10:26] Speaker 2: where has this been for 15 years?
[10:28] Speaker 7: They were just grounding themselves based on your geographic location.
[10:31] Speaker 7: Fluctuated so much. They probably were just trying to make
[10:34] Speaker 7: extra sure.
[10:35] Speaker 3: They were just grounding you a little bit.
[10:37] Speaker 4: I know.
[10:37] Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm also doing stuff for ESPN.
[10:41] Speaker 5: It's very confusing. And Colleen is on a flight to Australia.
[10:45] Speaker 5: So she won't be on NFL daily news. Next week,
[10:48] Speaker 5: when she's off doing big-time things overseas, we'll get some reports.
[10:52] Speaker 3: Right on.
[10:53] Speaker 4: Melbourne.
[10:53] Speaker 5: Okay, so those are the 13 players that I think
[10:57] Speaker 5: we all agreed do not belong on Quarterback Island. Shout
[11:00] Speaker 5: out to Tyler Shuck, who I mentioned on our previous
[11:04] Speaker 5: casting call, who I believe, like Baker Mayfield, might have
[11:09] Speaker 5: a moment this season where he is threatening to knock
[11:11] Speaker 5: on the QB Island door.
[11:13] Speaker 4: But it's a zero-sum game.
[11:14] Speaker 5: As much as you want Baker to be happy and
[11:16] Speaker 5: get on the island, that means someone's got to go off.
[11:19] Speaker 6: Right.
[11:20] Speaker 3: But we don't have anyone on right now.
[11:23] Speaker 5: Baker actually finished season one on it and stayed on
[11:25] Speaker 5: it for much of last year.
[11:26] Speaker 2: Okay.
[11:26] Speaker 4: Those are the 13 guys not on the list.
[11:28] Speaker 3: Okay.
[11:28] Speaker 4: That was efficient.
[11:30] Speaker 3: So math, how many do we have?
[11:32] Speaker 5: We have 19 players left for 12 spots. And I think,
[11:37] Speaker 5: The quickest way to do this, and I want to
[11:39] Speaker 5: talk about these players. Math is famously Colleen Strong's.
[11:43] Speaker 3: I do words, but I don't do math. You know,
[11:45] Speaker 3: you're writing a lot down, Colleen, but I don't know.
[11:47] Speaker 3: We'll see how it goes. There's a lot of words
[11:49] Speaker 3: on here. I told you I do words.
[11:52] Speaker 5: I think these guys would get my rubber stamp and
[11:55] Speaker 5: we can vote on any that anyone wants to. But
[11:58] Speaker 5: I actually believe there's a five pack of guys that
[12:03] Speaker 5: can go on pretty quickly. The defining quarterbacks of this decade,
[12:08] Speaker 5: to me, are still Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes.
[12:13] Speaker 5: I know there's some skepticism about how Mahomes is going
[12:15] Speaker 5: to play this year from you, Steve.
[12:16] Speaker 4: I'd like to hear about that.
[12:18] Speaker 2: No, not about that. Go ahead. Okay.
[12:20] Speaker 5: I would also put Matthew Stafford, the reigning MVP, kind
[12:22] Speaker 5: of in that grouping now.
[12:25] Speaker 2: One more.
[12:26] Speaker 4: One more.
[12:26] Speaker 2: One more.
[12:27] Speaker 5: And ultimately, when Joe Burrow is healthy, he belongs on
[12:30] Speaker 5: this island. Do you guys all agree to vote these
[12:34] Speaker 5: five guys onto the island right off the bat? I'm
[12:37] Speaker 5: going to hold up my yes here.
[12:38] Speaker 3: Yes for me.
[12:40] Speaker 2: Okay.
[12:40] Speaker 3: Unequivocally.
[12:42] Speaker 2: Or upside down on. On.
[12:43] Speaker 3: Yes.
[12:44] Speaker 7: No.
[12:44] Speaker 4: That's a yes for Steve White.
[12:46] Speaker 6: Okay.
[12:46] Speaker 4: We got five guys on the island.
[12:47] Speaker 7: I would just like to reiterate as the go-to rules
[12:52] Speaker 7: person here.
[12:53] Speaker 5: Nobody likes a rules person, Jordan.
[12:56] Speaker 7: You just seem to change or forget them so often, Greg, that,
[13:00] Speaker 7: so I love, I love the conversation that we open with.
[13:03] Speaker 7: Cause it is, these guys are of our, of really
[13:05] Speaker 7: our era right now. They are helping to define the position. Um,
[13:11] Speaker 7: once we get into the season, the conversation shifts a
[13:14] Speaker 7: little bit to who is defining the position right now
[13:18] Speaker 7: in this NFL season. That makes it tough for a
[13:20] Speaker 7: lot of us to talk about some of these guys,
[13:22] Speaker 7: I think, because when players like Patrick Mahomes, who did
[13:26] Speaker 7: dip a little bit last season, and then, you know, we,
[13:29] Speaker 7: we fairly criticized his supporting cast as well, like run game,
[13:32] Speaker 7: et cetera. Or when, you know, when Joe Burrow was
[13:37] Speaker 7: maybe struggling through the injury, we have to take them
[13:39] Speaker 7: off because of the quote unquote Jordan rules and all that.
[13:41] Speaker 7: But I just think we need to keep in mind, like,
[13:43] Speaker 7: it's great to have the overall legacy talk right now,
[13:45] Speaker 7: but in the context of what we're doing this season,
[13:48] Speaker 7: we have to remember it's going to be in segments
[13:51] Speaker 7: and pieces. Just saying, just throwing that out there.
[13:54] Speaker 4: Good reminder.
[13:55] Speaker 3: In no direction, but mostly your direction, Greg.
[13:57] Speaker 4: No, good reminder.
[13:58] Speaker 5: And honestly, none of these guys, other than potentially Lamar
[14:02] Speaker 5: at one point last season, was ever playing at a
[14:04] Speaker 5: level that I thought would have seriously taken them off
[14:07] Speaker 5: QB Island. Patrick Mahomes, at the end of the season,
[14:10] Speaker 5: before he got hurt, was getting into that territory. But
[14:12] Speaker 5: if you remember the first half of the season, he
[14:14] Speaker 5: was on my MVP list. He was fantastic last year.
[14:18] Speaker 5: So for him, it's more about staying healthy and wondering
[14:23] Speaker 5: about the surroundings that is giving you a sour face, Steve.
[14:26] Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think it's two pronged. I mean,
[14:28] Speaker 2: the receiving core, who are you doubling?
[14:31] Speaker 7: Mm hmm.
[14:32] Speaker 6: Nobody.
[14:32] Speaker 2: And secondly, he's probably going to have to score at
[14:34] Speaker 2: least a touchdown more because that defense has been overhauled.
[14:37] Speaker 2: When you lose your entire defensive secondary and you're playing
[14:41] Speaker 2: teams like Denver and the Chargers in your division who
[14:43] Speaker 2: can hang some points up, he's going to have to
[14:45] Speaker 2: put more points up than he's had the past couple years.
[14:47] Speaker 6: And obviously we'll be watching his mobility. Sure, we know
[14:52] Speaker 6: what he's done in training camp and stuff, but when
[14:55] Speaker 6: real games are happening, I think that This just happened
[14:58] Speaker 6: last year. Like, I would expect his mobility to not
[15:01] Speaker 6: be at the level that it was at his peak yet.
[15:04] Speaker 6: He'll build up to that, but I don't expect it
[15:06] Speaker 6: to be that right off the bat.
[15:08] Speaker 5: Was doing some research for Trevor Lawrence, who we will
[15:11] Speaker 5: talk about a little later, and thought it was interesting.
[15:14] Speaker 5: He gave the fourth most value rushing last year by DVOA,
[15:18] Speaker 5: which I think would surprise some people. But then you remember, oh,
[15:21] Speaker 5: who was second on that list? Patrick freaking Mahomes, because
[15:23] Speaker 5: he had to run so much.
[15:24] Speaker 7: Right.
[15:25] Speaker 5: I'm excited to see what this is going to be
[15:27] Speaker 5: for Lamar and Joe Burrow. I think it's been a
[15:29] Speaker 5: really encouraging overall preseason for both of them. And then, yeah, it's,
[15:34] Speaker 5: it's every reason to believe Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford
[15:37] Speaker 5: is all systems go.
[15:38] Speaker 2: Well, I think for Lamar, I'm interested in his receiving
[15:42] Speaker 2: core as well. Cause other than Zay Flowers, you got
[15:44] Speaker 2: the rookie, uh, from USC, who's Kobe Lane. Kobe Lane's
[15:47] Speaker 2: had a really, but again, we keep talking Declan Doyle.
[15:51] Speaker 2: I think we just like to say the name, um,
[15:54] Speaker 2: more so because there's, Yeah, he's coming in with a
[15:56] Speaker 2: lot of pedigree, but he's a tight ends guy. Other
[15:59] Speaker 2: than Mark Andrews, who's their tight ends? I mean, I'm
[16:01] Speaker 2: kind of like, let's figure out what this offense is
[16:03] Speaker 2: going to be. You know, guard to guard. They got questions.
[16:08] Speaker 2: Three people along the middle. They got questions there in Baltimore.
[16:11] Speaker 2: So Lamar is going to be on his horse.
[16:13] Speaker 5: And he is going to be my pick. probably for
[16:18] Speaker 5: MVP when we make predictions later in this week.
[16:21] Speaker 4: We'll see.
[16:21] Speaker 5: I don't want to, I have to go through it
[16:23] Speaker 5: and I just think things are set up for him
[16:25] Speaker 5: to have one more great year.
[16:26] Speaker 2: All right.
[16:27] Speaker 5: We have five guys on the list. We've got 19
[16:29] Speaker 5: guys eliminated doing the math. Um, we have seven spots,
[16:37] Speaker 5: spots left. We have 13 guys, uh, eliminated rather. Uh,
[16:41] Speaker 5: we have seven spots left, uh, for 14 guys. Let's
[16:45] Speaker 5: take a break now just because it's a natural time.
[16:47] Speaker 5: And after we come back, we will start nominating all
[16:50] Speaker 5: the rest of the players for votes.
[16:52] Speaker 4: This is where it gets sticky. It gets difficult. Eric
[16:56] Speaker 4: said the first show is always the easy one. We'll
[16:58] Speaker 4: see about that, Eric. Sticky, icky.
[17:08] Speaker 5: Back on Quarterback Island. Frankly, the vibes are too good.
[17:12] Speaker 5: Too much agree.
[17:13] Speaker 6: I know.
[17:15] Speaker 3: I know it.
[17:16] Speaker 4: I want arguments. That's my love language.
[17:20] Speaker 3: That's true. It's a little stressful.
[17:23] Speaker 4: It's good vibes early in the season.
[17:24] Speaker 3: Less amica.
[17:25] Speaker 5: I mean, this thing might go so fast that we'll
[17:28] Speaker 5: have time to talk about Colleen's dogs by the end
[17:31] Speaker 5: of the show. Have a nice dog update. Colleen, why
[17:33] Speaker 5: don't we get going with you? So we left it
[17:36] Speaker 5: with five players already on the island.
[17:39] Speaker 7: And.
[17:39] Speaker 5: seven spots to fill. We have 14 candidates for those seven.
[17:43] Speaker 7: All right.
[17:44] Speaker 6: Well, this is very easy for me. It's the classic
[17:46] Speaker 6: case of the forgotten one. And it's Justin Herbert. How
[17:51] Speaker 6: is he not on this list? I feel like he
[17:55] Speaker 6: is an elite level without all of the accolades that
[17:59] Speaker 6: some of these other quarterbacks have. And then he's just
[18:02] Speaker 6: never in the conversations because the chargers are never in
[18:05] Speaker 6: the conversations. But Now you have Mike McDaniel arriving in town.
[18:10] Speaker 6: I'm really interested to see what he's going to do
[18:12] Speaker 6: with this offense and Justin Herbert.
[18:15] Speaker 3: And it just feels like this is a no-brainer. I
[18:17] Speaker 3: don't know.
[18:18] Speaker 7: Does anyone have pushback? I don't have any pushback. We
[18:21] Speaker 7: voted him on the island at the end of last season.
[18:23] Speaker 7: So even though the team had totally collapsed, the offense...
[18:28] Speaker 7: their positions because of injuries, they totally collapsed. By the
[18:31] Speaker 7: end of the season, Justin Herbert was playing hero ball
[18:33] Speaker 7: and still.
[18:34] Speaker 3: We voted him on the island.
[18:35] Speaker 5: I thought it was his best year in three years
[18:37] Speaker 5: last year until it wasn't. Now we finished it at
[18:41] Speaker 5: the end of the regular season. That's why I had
[18:43] Speaker 5: to punish him a little. I don't think it's right
[18:46] Speaker 5: to put him in this category with Mahomes and Lamar
[18:49] Speaker 5: and now Stafford coming off of an MVP in Burrow.
[18:52] Speaker 4: We just had to separate him out a little.
[18:53] Speaker 5: But to Jordan's point, and something I said earlier, there's
[18:56] Speaker 5: only been three players that have finished both years on
[19:00] Speaker 5: the island.
[19:01] Speaker 4: And it's the two L.A. quarterbacks and Josh Allen. Herbert's
[19:04] Speaker 4: in there.
[19:04] Speaker 5: He's consistent. What more do you want to see out
[19:07] Speaker 5: of him specifically?
[19:08] Speaker 2: Well, I think we're going to see fewer pass attempts.
[19:11] Speaker 2: With McDaniel in there, they're going to run that stretch
[19:13] Speaker 2: zone scheme. That's why I'm saying Omari and Hampton better
[19:15] Speaker 2: be in some early preseason projections for potential MVP. He's
[19:19] Speaker 2: going to have it.
[19:19] Speaker 3: Whoa!
[19:20] Speaker 2: Plus, they're going to be far more tight end centric.
[19:23] Speaker 4: Okay. I think that'll help them.
[19:25] Speaker 2: You got Gadsden. People forget Dave Njoku's on this team.
[19:28] Speaker 2: Right now, they've got three tight ends. Even in preseason,
[19:31] Speaker 2: they were showing some three tight formations with some dazzling
[19:35] Speaker 2: motion options. Like what they did on that big 65-yard
[19:39] Speaker 2: touchdown pass. It was beautiful to see. And that was
[19:42] Speaker 2: just eye candy for people to study because they may
[19:45] Speaker 2: not run it for five weeks.
[19:46] Speaker 6: Yeah, David Njoku showed up at the volleyball court that
[19:49] Speaker 6: I play.
[19:50] Speaker 3: At two days ago. And yes, I can confirm.
[19:52] Speaker 4: Wow.
[19:53] Speaker 3: What's the height difference there?
[19:55] Speaker 5: Wow. It looks like he's actually lost weight too. He
[19:58] Speaker 5: loves to play beach volleyball. Did you play with him?
[20:00] Speaker 5: Did you tell him you worked.
[20:01] Speaker 4: At the NFL?
[20:01] Speaker 3: I sat that game out.
[20:02] Speaker 4: Yeah, I did not. Because he famously... is often shirtless.
[20:07] Speaker 5: He was throughout the postgame and pregame of the Browns
[20:11] Speaker 5: game last season overseas that I went to.
[20:14] Speaker 4: He just, that's what he likes to do.
[20:15] Speaker 6: Well, and also if you're on a beach and it's
[20:17] Speaker 6: like 85 degrees.
[20:18] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[20:19] Speaker 3: That's kind of.
[20:19] Speaker 2: Kind of thing to do.
[20:20] Speaker 7: All right.
[20:21] Speaker 4: Yes on Justin Herbert.
[20:22] Speaker 1: Yes.
[20:22] Speaker 4: Yes is all around.
[20:23] Speaker 2: He's in.
[20:24] Speaker 5: He occupies a weird space, whereas no matter how... Even
[20:28] Speaker 5: if we shrunk this to 10, he'd be on there easily.
[20:30] Speaker 5: He's been a top 10 quarterback since the day he arrived.
[20:32] Speaker 4: It's just everyone wants just a little bit more.
[20:34] Speaker 2: Playing behind a wafer-thin offensive line.
[20:36] Speaker 3: Always.
[20:37] Speaker 7: Always.
[20:38] Speaker 4: It could be better this year if they're healthier. Why
[20:40] Speaker 4: don't you go, Weiss?
[20:43] Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to go another slam dunk. Dak.
[20:45] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[20:46] Speaker 2: Dak Prescott. I mean, look, my whole thing is he's
[20:50] Speaker 2: got arguably the best wide receiver tandem. I think Shadi
[20:54] Speaker 2: knows what he's doing. That offensive line is real. I mean, Jordan,
[20:56] Speaker 2: you saw the joint practices. Alone, they've got something working
[21:00] Speaker 2: there offensively, and I just think Dak's going to continue
[21:03] Speaker 2: to put it up. And now he may actually have
[21:05] Speaker 2: a defense that's going to give him an extra possession
[21:07] Speaker 2: or two a game.
[21:08] Speaker 7: I think that he does so many things well at
[21:11] Speaker 7: the line of scrimmage too. It really opens up offensive coordinator,
[21:14] Speaker 7: Clayton Adams playbook in order to say, Hey, I want
[21:17] Speaker 7: to do a lot of different things that can maybe
[21:21] Speaker 7: fool the defense pre-snap formations, motions, different, um, just changing
[21:26] Speaker 7: gaps on people in the run game, but also in
[21:28] Speaker 7: the past game too, and changing spatial assignments, doing a
[21:32] Speaker 7: lot of that work pre-snap requires such a artistry of,
[21:35] Speaker 7: of conductorship, I think from, um, a quarterback and it's
[21:39] Speaker 7: just a match made in heaven to me with, with
[21:41] Speaker 7: Dak Prescott there, because we know he can already throw
[21:44] Speaker 7: the ball really, really well. And this, to me, this
[21:46] Speaker 7: Brian Schottenheimer West coast, very traditional passing scheme, marrying with
[21:52] Speaker 7: this run game that Clayton Adams has brought to Dallas,
[21:56] Speaker 7: giving them so much dimension and Dak Prescott is the
[21:59] Speaker 7: quarterback who is capable of handling all of it. So, well,
[22:02] Speaker 7: I just think it's, it's one of those really cool
[22:04] Speaker 7: mutual relationships where you see it help the quarterback, but
[22:08] Speaker 7: you also see the quarterback turn it into this really
[22:10] Speaker 7: special thing. And I'm so high on the Cowboys this year,
[22:14] Speaker 7: which is kind of a weird sentence to say out loud,
[22:17] Speaker 7: but because watching all the pieces have come together over
[22:20] Speaker 7: the last year, I just really believe that they're going
[22:22] Speaker 7: to be a special offense led by Dak Prescott, who
[22:25] Speaker 7: I think is the one who will be an MVP
[22:27] Speaker 7: conversation early on in the year.
[22:28] Speaker 6: You're pro God, Gotti. Is that the greatest offense there is?
[22:33] Speaker 4: I feel like that needs some work stopping.
[22:36] Speaker 7: That's too much of a take for me. But yeah,
[22:39] Speaker 7: I think they're going to be really, really fun.
[22:41] Speaker 5: Spent all of last year on QB Island, by the way,
[22:43] Speaker 5: from the beginning. And he's coming right back.
[22:46] Speaker 4: I think he's... Here we go.
[22:47] Speaker 3: The mayor.
[22:48] Speaker 4: He's kind of set up for his... Stafford year.
[22:52] Speaker 5: At some point where if you kind of compare their
[22:55] Speaker 5: first 10 years in the league, I mean, Dax actually
[22:58] Speaker 5: I would say was more consistent at a higher level,
[23:01] Speaker 5: but he kind of needs that that one overwhelming MVP caliber.
[23:05] Speaker 5: And he did come in second a couple of years ago.
[23:07] Speaker 5: It's easy to forget, but where he has a little
[23:09] Speaker 5: more team success and then people.
[23:11] Speaker 4: Start thinking about him for can.
[23:13] Speaker 5: I'm going to throw out a guy that I'll just
[23:15] Speaker 5: say I'm voting no on just because I want to
[23:18] Speaker 5: cross some people off, put some people on, like we're going.
[23:21] Speaker 4: To go through them all.
[23:22] Speaker 5: It's more that, look, if you're looking at the class,
[23:25] Speaker 5: I do think about, we want to have diversity representation
[23:29] Speaker 5: of different young, old. And I think about the class of,
[23:32] Speaker 5: 24 now as such an important moment in... like the
[23:38] Speaker 5: quarterback landscape of the future. And that includes Bo Nix
[23:42] Speaker 5: and Caleb Williams and Drake May. And Jaden Daniels is
[23:46] Speaker 5: the guy I want to say that I don't think
[23:47] Speaker 5: it would make sense to put Jaden Daniels on the
[23:49] Speaker 5: Island to start the year. But I also want to
[23:53] Speaker 5: recognize like he lived there for basically all of his
[23:56] Speaker 5: rookie year. We've seen the ceiling and he feels about
[24:00] Speaker 5: as unpredictable as any player we are going to talk
[24:03] Speaker 5: about on this entire show, because he, maybe he's going
[24:07] Speaker 5: to make us look stupid and maybe he's just going
[24:08] Speaker 5: to be that dude right away from the get-go and
[24:11] Speaker 5: he's going to be there week five. Like that, that
[24:12] Speaker 5: is an outcome. Or he could really struggle with this
[24:15] Speaker 5: new offense. There's concerns there. So he's a no for
[24:17] Speaker 5: me for now, but just recognizing the overall.
[24:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that, especially because every day
[24:23] Speaker 2: you read about how bad this offensive line looks. I
[24:26] Speaker 2: do like them getting Stephon Diggs. It took him too
[24:28] Speaker 2: long to get him there. He's a bucket. Yeah, I mean,
[24:30] Speaker 2: but look, Jaden overcame, you know, he made, he overcame
[24:34] Speaker 2: a lot of the mistakes and the holes that were
[24:36] Speaker 2: there a couple years ago those were exposed last year
[24:39] Speaker 2: when he wasn't around but he can't start the season.
[24:41] Speaker 5: On the island we talked about him at length on
[24:43] Speaker 5: the on the casting call just to have kind of
[24:45] Speaker 5: that conversation but yeah it's crazy to think about that
[24:47] Speaker 5: class where is coming into last year he probably would
[24:49] Speaker 5: have been like number one based off of his rookie
[24:52] Speaker 5: year and now you could make the argument just based
[24:55] Speaker 5: off how last season went That is number four, which
[24:58] Speaker 5: is great, you know, because Bo Nix played so well
[25:00] Speaker 5: last year.
[25:01] Speaker 4: There you go. Someone to watch. No, I'm Jayden Daniels.
[25:04] Speaker 4: All right, we're crossing him off.
[25:05] Speaker 5: We have seven guys officially on the island, and we
[25:11] Speaker 5: have 11 players, so we have to eliminate four and
[25:14] Speaker 5: put seven on. Jordan, you can go in either direction here.
[25:17] Speaker 7: I'm going to vote for somebody to make the island
[25:20] Speaker 7: and a little bit of a justice being served for
[25:23] Speaker 7: this player in the, in a positive way, a little
[25:25] Speaker 7: bit of a mea culpa. I think we did not
[25:28] Speaker 7: have him on the island last year. He could have very,
[25:30] Speaker 7: very well made the island Jordan love. Hmm. I think
[25:34] Speaker 7: Jordan love needs to start the season on the Island.
[25:36] Speaker 7: I think that, and I know I said, I've just
[25:38] Speaker 7: said this about deck Prescott, but I think the same
[25:40] Speaker 7: thing about Jordan love. I think that especially getting Tucker
[25:43] Speaker 7: craft back and healthy, more clarity in the receiver's room
[25:46] Speaker 7: and just the way that he operates this offense. I
[25:48] Speaker 7: think Jordan love is trending toward being in that MVP
[25:52] Speaker 7: conversation early in the season. I love that he called
[25:55] Speaker 7: plays in the preseason game the other night. Uh, I
[25:58] Speaker 7: love that he called, uh, like basically a deep shot.
[26:01] Speaker 3: On third and 21.
[26:02] Speaker 7: Where most cowardly play callers would call a draw play.
[26:08] Speaker 7: Like I just love, I love everything about the confidence.
[26:11] Speaker 7: He has the mastery of this huge, major, major concerns
[26:14] Speaker 7: about this run game. Think their defense is possibly going
[26:17] Speaker 7: to really let them down early in the season, but
[26:20] Speaker 7: Early in the year is the key phrase here. I
[26:22] Speaker 7: think that he can come out of the gate hot
[26:24] Speaker 7: enough to where it might not matter as much. And
[26:28] Speaker 7: then they recalibrate down the stretch. I think Jordan Love
[26:30] Speaker 7: should be on quarterback.
[26:30] Speaker 2: He's got a lighter schedule early on. He's going to
[26:33] Speaker 2: be throwing the ball 35 times a game.
[26:34] Speaker 5: It'll be interesting to see his volume go up because
[26:36] Speaker 5: he's just thrown the ball so little over the last
[26:39] Speaker 5: couple of years.
[26:39] Speaker 4: And yet... he would have been on the Island.
[26:41] Speaker 5: Like if the Island was two spots bigger, he was
[26:43] Speaker 5: the last person to get cut off. He did spend
[26:45] Speaker 5: a little, I'm just saying he was on the Island
[26:49] Speaker 5: before that. And he had a couple of little injuries
[26:52] Speaker 5: that didn't help him right at the end of the
[26:53] Speaker 5: season where he just missed a little bit of time,
[26:55] Speaker 5: but I'm with you. The numbers would say he's right there.
[26:58] Speaker 5: And when I was saying diversity, I like, I mean,
[27:00] Speaker 5: like age, everything style, a quarterback. And to me, he
[27:04] Speaker 5: he is kind of the guy most smack in the
[27:07] Speaker 5: middle of his freaking prime. As crazy as it is
[27:10] Speaker 5: to think about Josh Allen and Lamar, like and and
[27:14] Speaker 5: they are now maybe they're still in their prime, but
[27:17] Speaker 5: they're now like they're not at the beginning of their prime.
[27:18] Speaker 5: Jordan Love should just be like reaching his apex as well.
[27:22] Speaker 4: I'm with you on that.
[27:23] Speaker 2: Jordan loves that. Nice call.
[27:25] Speaker 4: Jordan loves on It's an Easy One.
[27:27] Speaker 2: Ooh, eight. This is tough.
[27:28] Speaker 4: We have eight players now.
[27:29] Speaker 2: Okay.
[27:31] Speaker 4: We have four spots to go.
[27:32] Speaker 6: Okay, yeah.
[27:35] Speaker 3: Now it gets a little dicey. Does it?
[27:38] Speaker 2: It does. It does.
[27:41] Speaker 4: Greg wanted.
[27:41] Speaker 2: All right, well, I'll throw one out there.
[27:43] Speaker 7: Okay.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Dicey.
[27:44] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Because he finished last season on the island, but are
[27:47] Speaker 2: we putting Trevor Lawrence?
[27:48] Speaker 5: Ooh, this is the one I was thinking about. Okay,
[27:50] Speaker 5: this is one of the most interesting ones. I feel
[27:52] Speaker 5: like we got some easier no's still left.
[27:54] Speaker 4: I guess that's what I'm talking about.
[27:55] Speaker 7: Right.
[27:55] Speaker 5: This one, I truly don't know where this will go.
[27:59] Speaker 5: What's your gut off the bat?
[28:01] Speaker 2: What's my gut is no. And I think it's going
[28:03] Speaker 2: to be fantastic because the receiving core is better. He's
[28:06] Speaker 2: been in the system longer. But I look at some
[28:08] Speaker 2: of the other people on here, like, are we blowing
[28:13] Speaker 2: off Caleb Goff?
[28:14] Speaker 4: We're going to get to that.
[28:15] Speaker 2: Some of these other guys, like, now I'm looking at
[28:18] Speaker 2: some good players got to be put on the practice
[28:20] Speaker 2: squad on the practice island.
[28:22] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[28:22] Speaker 2: Okay, so there's... Because the numbers.
[28:25] Speaker 6: There's four spots, and do we want to just, like,
[28:27] Speaker 6: verbalize the guys that are.
[28:29] Speaker 4: Well, they got to get on.
[28:30] Speaker 5: No, I think we talk to Trevor, and maybe Trevor,
[28:32] Speaker 5: if we think he's on the borderline, we table for now.
[28:35] Speaker 4: The case would be.
[28:37] Speaker 5: Down the stretch last year, I test numbers. It's all there.
[28:43] Speaker 5: That's how he got on the island as the last
[28:45] Speaker 5: player over Jordan Love. You were supporting that.
[28:50] Speaker 7: Yes, but we actually voted Caleb Williams on as.
[28:53] Speaker 4: The last player. Okay, so maybe Trevor was seventh.
[28:55] Speaker 7: Because specifically of Caleb's high splash moments, the game enders,
[28:59] Speaker 7: the game winners, the fact that they won the NFC
[29:01] Speaker 7: North in part because of the major gamer plays he made.
[29:05] Speaker 3: So continue. Continue.
[29:07] Speaker 5: Fourth most valuable runner, as I mentioned, the last six weeks.
[29:10] Speaker 5: It's like, it's a guy that we have to ask,
[29:14] Speaker 5: do we trust that it's going to continue on an
[29:16] Speaker 5: offense that should be great?
[29:18] Speaker 2: It should be just, I mean, especially his receivers are
[29:21] Speaker 2: so much better. You know, we don't talk about Brent
[29:23] Speaker 2: Strange as one of the elite tight ends, which he is.
[29:25] Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
[29:26] Speaker 2: But I'm just kind of like numbers wise, are we
[29:28] Speaker 2: putting him, are we going to bump a Sam Darnold?
[29:31] Speaker 5: Let's table him for now and get some of the
[29:33] Speaker 5: people we feel stronger about. Because I think he has
[29:35] Speaker 5: a chance for that last spot or two.
[29:38] Speaker 4: We'll see.
[29:39] Speaker 3: If I could just say.
[29:40] Speaker 7: I think that Trevor Lawrence represents like the highest variance
[29:44] Speaker 7: toward potential we are right or wrong starting this season.
[29:48] Speaker 4: Oh, high risk, high reward.
[29:51] Speaker 5: I agree with that because there is something about the
[29:54] Speaker 5: defining the positions that it does feel like Even with
[29:57] Speaker 5: Cohen there, it's like he's almost a bigger star than
[30:00] Speaker 5: Trevor Lawrence. There's always just something a little missing, which
[30:04] Speaker 5: is maybe unfair to him.
[30:05] Speaker 7: Well, I'll nominate somebody that shed that. attachment or connection
[30:09] Speaker 7: maybe to the play caller and I'm going to nominate
[30:11] Speaker 7: Jared Goff to be on the island. Jared Goff has
[30:14] Speaker 7: been one of our most consistent quarterback island guys. He
[30:18] Speaker 7: was not on at the end of last season. The
[30:20] Speaker 7: Lions obviously had their struggles, went through a couple different
[30:23] Speaker 7: changes at play caller. Jared Goff played well through the stretch.
[30:27] Speaker 7: Obviously he still struggles a bit under pressure, but he's
[30:30] Speaker 7: brought the floor of that and the floor of what
[30:32] Speaker 7: he can be so much higher than he got credit
[30:35] Speaker 7: for earlier in his career when he was obviously connected, um,
[30:40] Speaker 7: in every sentence basically to Sean McVay and Sean McVay's success.
[30:43] Speaker 7: So I love that he's shed that reputation. I love
[30:46] Speaker 7: that he's coming to his own in Detroit. I think
[30:48] Speaker 7: he is very deserving being on the Island. And I,
[30:51] Speaker 7: I'm really excited to see what He does with Drew Petzing,
[30:54] Speaker 7: with Jameer Gibbs in this overhauled run game. Great receiving core.
[30:58] Speaker 7: Would love to have more confidence in Sam Laporta long-term
[31:02] Speaker 7: in terms of the health. But I just think that
[31:05] Speaker 7: this is a very, very high-ceiling group, and it's led
[31:07] Speaker 7: by Jared Goff.
[31:08] Speaker 5: Yeah, and to be clear, for everyone that was listening
[31:10] Speaker 5: and might be wondering, we are supposed to take kind
[31:12] Speaker 5: of the quarterback out of their situations, their overcoming situations,
[31:15] Speaker 5: sometimes like a Justin Herbert.
[31:17] Speaker 4: A year ago. It's about their play. Obviously, it's all interconnected.
[31:20] Speaker 4: Jared Goff.
[31:21] Speaker 3: That's who Jared Goff is now. It's about him now.
[31:24] Speaker 3: It's not about the system. That's what I'm saying.
[31:26] Speaker 5: And last year, he fell off the island partly because
[31:29] Speaker 5: of the players around him. He got pressured more and
[31:32] Speaker 5: he struggles when under pressure. And yet I'm with you.
[31:35] Speaker 5: I'm a yes on Jared Goff. This is not a ranking.
[31:38] Speaker 5: I have a few guys that would have made it
[31:39] Speaker 5: faster than him. But either way, I would be a yes.
[31:42] Speaker 5: There was a great stat from FTN where he was
[31:47] Speaker 5: I think top five in effectiveness on throw or top
[31:51] Speaker 5: six in effectiveness behind the line of scrimmage and on
[31:54] Speaker 5: short passes and on intermediate passes and on deep passes.
[31:58] Speaker 5: Like Jared Goff can get two buckets any spot on
[32:02] Speaker 5: the field. You just got to protect them a little bit.
[32:04] Speaker 5: And to your point about being on the island a lot,
[32:07] Speaker 5: other than Josh Allen, he actually lasted the longest and
[32:11] Speaker 5: Patrick Mahomes. from the beginning to where he got booted
[32:14] Speaker 5: eventually last season.
[32:16] Speaker 4: I'm going to go.
[32:17] Speaker 6: Yes.
[32:17] Speaker 3: Our bills and lions listeners.
[32:19] Speaker 7: Don't let it be said that we don't pay respects
[32:22] Speaker 7: to your, to your quarterbacks and your teams.
[32:23] Speaker 3: Look at, look at the graph, look at the chart.
[32:26] Speaker 4: All right. Defining the position.
[32:27] Speaker 5: I think we got to go Drake May second and
[32:29] Speaker 5: MVP last year. You know, and if we're going to
[32:32] Speaker 5: go with someone very young. I mean, I should have
[32:35] Speaker 5: let Colleen, you were going to do that for me.
[32:37] Speaker 5: I was just like, no.
[32:39] Speaker 6: No, I mean, it's the he was made it to
[32:41] Speaker 6: a Super Bowl. It was in the MVP second voting.
[32:44] Speaker 6: I mean, we saw how good he was in. high
[32:47] Speaker 6: leverage situations. And I mean, yes, you can talk.
[32:51] Speaker 3: About the schedule that they faced last year.
[32:53] Speaker 6: And I think that that could, you know, you could
[32:55] Speaker 6: put that into account with his output, but he played
[32:58] Speaker 6: really well. And I think that he grew every week
[33:01] Speaker 6: when you watched him play playoffs until the playoffs. But like,
[33:05] Speaker 6: I just think that he should be on, if you're
[33:07] Speaker 6: looking at this list and the guys that we've left off, uh,
[33:10] Speaker 6: Drake May proved himself enough, I think, last year for
[33:12] Speaker 6: him to be on the island.
[33:13] Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's not a ranking, famously.
[33:17] Speaker 6: Right.
[33:17] Speaker 2: I love when you say that.
[33:18] Speaker 7: And he has A.J.
[33:18] Speaker 2: Brown at his disposal. Yes.
[33:20] Speaker 5: I mean, if it was, he might have come on,
[33:22] Speaker 5: at least in my opinion, over Goff or Jordan Love.
[33:25] Speaker 5: But it didn't matter as long as you get there
[33:28] Speaker 5: in the end. And I do want some young players
[33:31] Speaker 5: on this list, too. And I think if you had
[33:33] Speaker 5: to choose between any of the class— Well, he's got 2024.
[33:38] Speaker 4: He's got to be on.
[33:38] Speaker 1: All right.
[33:38] Speaker 6: He had no offensive line and he had like no weapons.
[33:42] Speaker 6: And he still he may still not work.
[33:44] Speaker 5: And yet he somehow had like a 70 percent completion percentage,
[33:48] Speaker 5: despite having one of the deepest average depth of target.
[33:50] Speaker 4: Let's go.
[33:50] Speaker 3: Yes.
[33:51] Speaker 4: Go get that MVP.
[33:52] Speaker 5: Yes.
[33:52] Speaker 4: And take me.
[33:53] Speaker 7: Wow.
[33:53] Speaker 5: We already have 10 spots. Yeah, this is about to
[33:55] Speaker 5: get real. There's only two about to get real funky
[33:58] Speaker 5: to remain.
[33:59] Speaker 3: And can we just shout out the names that are
[34:01] Speaker 3: on the list?
[34:02] Speaker 5: Of who have not been talked about is what you're
[34:06] Speaker 5: talking about. Jalen Hurts has not been discussed. Caleb Williams
[34:09] Speaker 5: has not been discussed. Trevor Lawrence has sort of been discussed,
[34:14] Speaker 5: but been tabled. Sam Darnold, Brock Purdy, Bo Nix, CJ Stroud,
[34:19] Speaker 5: and Daniel Jones. I bring up those last two names.
[34:22] Speaker 5: Just to say, I think we have two names. I
[34:25] Speaker 5: think we can cross off, but we could have a
[34:27] Speaker 5: very quick discussion. Does anyone want to make the case
[34:30] Speaker 5: for Stroud or Daniel Jones to be on this list
[34:32] Speaker 5: to start?
[34:32] Speaker 7: No.
[34:33] Speaker 4: QB Island.
[34:33] Speaker 5: Okay, so we're all no on CJ Stroud and Daniel Jones,
[34:37] Speaker 5: but Connie, Steve, Jordan, if you have any stray opinions
[34:43] Speaker 5: you want to have, and I know you're Mrs. Colts
[34:45] Speaker 5: over there on Daniel Jones coming into this season or CJ,
[34:48] Speaker 5: who we've talked about a lot on this show.
[34:51] Speaker 4: Um, you know, now's your time.
[34:53] Speaker 6: Just to go pro Colts again. Just, just, just, you just,
[34:56] Speaker 6: you want me to do this again?
[34:57] Speaker 4: Just to make the point that we have.
[35:01] Speaker 6: No, I have the scars and I can't do it again.
[35:05] Speaker 6: I'm not going to be able to do it again.
[35:06] Speaker 6: And maybe, and maybe they will flourish because of that.
[35:11] Speaker 4: There it is. There's the rationale.
[35:13] Speaker 3: The hope is there in her subconscious.
[35:16] Speaker 5: To start last season, we were barely talking about it.
[35:18] Speaker 5: He was in a quarterback battle for parts of August
[35:22] Speaker 5: last year. Not too long before they gave him that job.
[35:26] Speaker 5: And numbers wise, you can take your freaking Herbert and
[35:30] Speaker 5: Stafford and Drake May and Jordan Love and all those guys.
[35:33] Speaker 5: He was right there with him or better for a
[35:36] Speaker 5: solid half a season.
[35:37] Speaker 7: It's interesting you say that now, Greg, when in the
[35:39] Speaker 7: moment you were basically only commenting about how not real
[35:43] Speaker 7: that was.
[35:43] Speaker 2: Well, what happened?
[35:47] Speaker 4: He got hurt. He was struggling before he got hurt.
[35:49] Speaker 4: I do want that put down for the record.
[35:51] Speaker 2: Okay.
[35:52] Speaker 5: We're going to cross those guys off. And so really
[35:56] Speaker 5: it's two spots for Lawrence, Nix, Purdy, Darnold, and Hurt.
[36:03] Speaker 5: I'm not forgetting anyone there, but that is.
[36:07] Speaker 4: What, six different players. It's not going to be easy.
[36:10] Speaker 5: Is there someone you find the easiest out of that
[36:13] Speaker 5: group to cross off?
[36:14] Speaker 4: It is getting tough.
[36:16] Speaker 2: To cross off?
[36:18] Speaker 5: Or does anyone want to make the case for someone
[36:21] Speaker 5: who should definitely be on and then there's just.
[36:23] Speaker 4: One spot left?
[36:24] Speaker 3: It's Brock Purdy. To me, it's obviously Brock Purdy.
[36:27] Speaker 7: He was on the island last year and he's improved
[36:30] Speaker 7: so much to the point where, again, detaching from the
[36:33] Speaker 7: system itself a little bit, the way he was connected
[36:36] Speaker 7: so much to it. He played so well last year
[36:39] Speaker 7: and there were some injuries and things like that. But
[36:42] Speaker 7: by the end of the season, you know, back on the,
[36:45] Speaker 7: you know, as the starter full time. And again, he,
[36:48] Speaker 7: he played so well. It's almost like to me, his
[36:52] Speaker 7: development arc and the way he throws the ball. Now,
[36:54] Speaker 7: the way that he takes risks, the way that he
[36:57] Speaker 7: can elevate an offense, um, not just play within the
[37:00] Speaker 7: structure of it and within the parameters of it. To me,
[37:04] Speaker 7: he does help define like his, his entire story does
[37:06] Speaker 7: help define, you know, the position right.
[37:09] Speaker 5: Now, these other guys popping up regular Joe Brock birdie.
[37:14] Speaker 7: And I think he's also one of the best examples
[37:17] Speaker 7: of like, I mean, shoot, of anyone you're going to
[37:19] Speaker 7: not have impacted by the many, many, many storylines surrounding
[37:24] Speaker 7: the football team, including on the field and off the field.
[37:28] Speaker 7: Like if you're going to detach someone completely from that
[37:30] Speaker 7: for the sake of this argument, I think he would
[37:32] Speaker 7: probably be one of those people.
[37:34] Speaker 4: Colleen, would you pick Darnold or Purdy if you could
[37:38] Speaker 4: only choose one?
[37:39] Speaker 3: You already know.
[37:40] Speaker 6: I saw my love has not faded for Sam Donald.
[37:44] Speaker 3: Don't fall into this trap. Like it has for the Colts.
[37:46] Speaker 7: Don't fall into this trap, Colleen, because he's only giving
[37:48] Speaker 7: you two choices when we have four.
[37:50] Speaker 4: He's only giving you.
[37:52] Speaker 3: Two choices when we have four.
[37:53] Speaker 4: We're trying to build drama here.
[37:55] Speaker 3: You're trying to build drama.
[37:56] Speaker 4: Because I'm thinking about the last spot.
[37:58] Speaker 7: When I look at Sam Donald's last two years, he's
[38:01] Speaker 7: been lights out.
[38:01] Speaker 2: Why would you put.
[38:03] Speaker 7: It between those two when maybe another question is, do
[38:07] Speaker 7: Darnold and Purdy both belong on and Knicks and Lawrence
[38:10] Speaker 7: both belong off?
[38:11] Speaker 4: Right.
[38:12] Speaker 3: That to me is.
[38:13] Speaker 4: A fair question. And Hurts is out there too. Absolutely.
[38:15] Speaker 5: Then that might be how I'm leaning, but I'm sort
[38:19] Speaker 5: of thinking about these, like who is the guy out
[38:21] Speaker 5: of all the players left that has to be on
[38:24] Speaker 5: the island the most? And to me, our friend Eric
[38:29] Speaker 5: Roberts suggests Caleb Williams could be in that mix who
[38:32] Speaker 5: did finish last year on the island.
[38:34] Speaker 3: He could be in the mix.
[38:36] Speaker 4: To me, Darnold's actually the easiest one to put on.
[38:39] Speaker 2: To have to put on Sam Darnold.
[38:40] Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I think they both are.
[38:42] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[38:43] Speaker 2: When I look at the list, I mean, I'm going
[38:45] Speaker 2: three from the other.
[38:46] Speaker 3: Let me be like super clear.
[38:48] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[38:48] Speaker 3: Apparently now that I got it, it's changing.
[38:50] Speaker 7: Like just because I'm saying I think Purdy is a
[38:53] Speaker 7: no brainer to be on doesn't mean I think Sam
[38:55] Speaker 7: Darnold should be off. I think Sam Darnold is a
[38:57] Speaker 7: no brainer to be on.
[38:58] Speaker 4: OK, so do we all voting yes on Sam Darnold?
[39:00] Speaker 2: Yes.
[39:01] Speaker 4: Vote yes.
[39:02] Speaker 3: Sam Darnold. Super Bowl winner, Sam Darnold.
[39:07] Speaker 5: It is going to be interesting to see how he
[39:09] Speaker 5: like handles it. He's been so interesting to watch on
[39:13] Speaker 5: Hard Knocks. I mean, he's extremely likable. He almost feels
[39:18] Speaker 5: like he's forgotten of his new stature. And yet here
[39:22] Speaker 5: he is in year two also feeling clearly more comfortable
[39:25] Speaker 5: as the guy there.
[39:26] Speaker 6: Well, I think that he's always known what he was
[39:30] Speaker 6: capable of doing.
[39:30] Speaker 3: It's just everybody else hasn't. So nothing has changed for him, really.
[39:34] Speaker 6: Yes, he has a ring, but that's just what he
[39:36] Speaker 6: gets for showing everyone finally.
[39:39] Speaker 3: What his potential is.
[39:40] Speaker 7: I keep thinking about after the Super Bowl, how hard
[39:43] Speaker 7: on himself he was too. Yeah. And it was like, man,
[39:47] Speaker 7: can we just like watch you enjoy this a minute?
[39:50] Speaker 7: You know, and to me, that shows a higher gear
[39:54] Speaker 7: of somebody who is intrinsically motivated is, yes, I wish
[39:57] Speaker 7: for him that he could just stand there and really
[39:59] Speaker 7: appreciate it instead of verbally and like publicly criticizing his
[40:02] Speaker 7: own play. But at the same time, like that just
[40:06] Speaker 7: shows that there's another gear to this guy that we
[40:08] Speaker 7: haven't even... seen yet and I'm so curious to see
[40:11] Speaker 7: how he continues because he's on the upward trajectory and
[40:14] Speaker 7: to me he's staying there.
[40:15] Speaker 2: He's still one of the youngest quarterbacks in the NFL.
[40:17] Speaker 2: I mean he's been around for a while. He's 29.
[40:22] Speaker 3: What is he spiritually?
[40:23] Speaker 5: He's been in the NFL for a long time to
[40:26] Speaker 5: only be 29.
[40:30] Speaker 2: When you look at it in terms of playing because
[40:32] Speaker 2: he's had those years where he's on the bench. That's
[40:33] Speaker 2: why I say he's still one of the younger quarterbacks
[40:35] Speaker 2: in the NFL so he's still an ascending player. He's
[40:37] Speaker 2: got JSN. You know, A.J. Barner is one of the
[40:41] Speaker 2: best tight ends in the NFL that we have not
[40:43] Speaker 2: talked about. He's got a good offensive line, but the
[40:46] Speaker 2: organization believes in it. And not just the people upstairs,
[40:50] Speaker 2: it's the guys in the locker room. And that's something
[40:52] Speaker 2: that he's got. You can see that whole culture in
[40:54] Speaker 2: that building. They all believe in each other. I think
[40:58] Speaker 2: Darnold's going to continue to grow and become one of
[41:01] Speaker 2: the better quarterbacks.
[41:02] Speaker 5: I think because I believe in all the guys on
[41:04] Speaker 5: the list so much and I've looked at Darnold's career
[41:06] Speaker 5: that he is one of the more likely guys to
[41:08] Speaker 5: fall off because of what he said after the Super Bowl.
[41:10] Speaker 5: He didn't play that well in that game. He didn't
[41:12] Speaker 5: play that well in their first playoff game against the 49ers.
[41:16] Speaker 5: He didn't play that well down the stretch last season,
[41:19] Speaker 5: which is why he came off quarterback island for a
[41:21] Speaker 5: little bit after being gangbusters. He is a streaky up
[41:25] Speaker 5: and down player.
[41:26] Speaker 2: Yep.
[41:27] Speaker 4: In the game I left out.
[41:28] Speaker 5: On purpose there was one of the best performances by
[41:31] Speaker 5: any quarterback all season and is the reason that he
[41:33] Speaker 5: should have been proud in that moment to win the
[41:35] Speaker 5: Super Bowl obviously he was so important to getting there
[41:38] Speaker 5: but there is something about him that has been a
[41:40] Speaker 5: little more up and down than let's say a Jared
[41:43] Speaker 5: Goff who we put on a little earlier I I.
[41:47] Speaker 7: Have an idea if you guys will dream with me
[41:49] Speaker 7: here for a minute because we have is.
[41:51] Speaker 6: It a ripcord we're gonna introduce a ripcord it's not Oh, yeah,
[41:55] Speaker 6: let's do it.
[41:56] Speaker 7: So I'm curious. We have one spot left.
[41:59] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[41:59] Speaker 7: And we have a lot of guys that we want
[42:01] Speaker 7: to talk about. I know, Greg, you're going to think
[42:03] Speaker 7: that I've been like body snatched by saying this out loud,
[42:06] Speaker 7: but should we rank our choices of guys who we
[42:11] Speaker 7: would want on that spot in terms of the order
[42:14] Speaker 7: we would feel comfortable putting them there before we make
[42:16] Speaker 7: our final decision?
[42:17] Speaker 5: And I also think because, and we've talked about this
[42:21] Speaker 5: in the past, the show's not over here. like everything
[42:25] Speaker 5: is relatively written in pencil. If the, now that we
[42:29] Speaker 5: get down to these names, there is a majority of
[42:31] Speaker 5: people that for instance, think Caleb Williams should be on
[42:34] Speaker 5: over Jared Goff.
[42:36] Speaker 4: We can still vote. We can vote a yes on everyone.
[42:40] Speaker 5: And then ultimately, and we've done it in the past,
[42:42] Speaker 5: have to make a hard choice at the end of
[42:44] Speaker 5: this show. I think of the guys remaining, probably the
[42:49] Speaker 5: strongest feeling I have is, is actually that it's hard
[42:53] Speaker 5: to put Jalen Hurts.
[42:54] Speaker 4: On right now.
[42:55] Speaker 2: I would agree.
[42:56] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[42:56] Speaker 6: Right?
[42:57] Speaker 2: I would agree.
[42:57] Speaker 5: So I think Jalen Hurts is a no right now.
[42:59] Speaker 4: And yet... He's a no.
[43:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, he's out there with Baker. He's another guy that I.
[43:03] Speaker 4: I believe in you.
[43:04] Speaker 7: He's another guy that, like Baker, to your point, I
[43:07] Speaker 7: think we're going to be talking about so much to
[43:09] Speaker 7: start the season because it's going to be a completely
[43:11] Speaker 7: new look. offense that we're finally going to see in
[43:14] Speaker 7: its totality over the first quarter of this season. And
[43:20] Speaker 7: he's another high variance. We may be wrong. We may
[43:22] Speaker 7: be right.
[43:22] Speaker 3: Kind of guy.
[43:23] Speaker 5: I mean, he is a guy with a Super Bowl
[43:24] Speaker 5: title and a guy who came in second in MVP.
[43:26] Speaker 5: How are you feeling about the mustache? The relatively felt
[43:32] Speaker 5: like he does look.
[43:35] Speaker 4: Tremor. And they're saying he's running a lot more. Oh,
[43:38] Speaker 4: my God.
[43:38] Speaker 3: Is it the offseason still or no?
[43:40] Speaker 6: It is. It is.
[43:41] Speaker 4: But a little neck.
[43:42] Speaker 5: How are you feeling about the whole new Hurts vibe?
[43:46] Speaker 4: Because he does seem happier.
[43:48] Speaker 3: He does, which that makes me happy.
[43:51] Speaker 6: That makes me believe that at least the vibes are
[43:54] Speaker 6: a little lighter around the team than they have been
[43:57] Speaker 6: in the past.
[43:57] Speaker 4: But I.
[44:00] Speaker 3: Feel like.
[44:01] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[44:01] Speaker 6: It's like I'm a scorned lover. Like, I don't know
[44:04] Speaker 6: if I'm ready to trust again yet. But that's also
[44:07] Speaker 6: my nature in general. Like, this is my.
[44:10] Speaker 4: Oh, you're from Philly?
[44:11] Speaker 3: I put the ball real low on the ground.
[44:14] Speaker 4: And then they win, like, two games. And anyone that...
[44:17] Speaker 4: We are so backed out.
[44:19] Speaker 2: Go Birds!
[44:19] Speaker 4: That he's the MVP. All right, put him on the island.
[44:22] Speaker 2: My thing is, when it comes to Jalen Hurts, it's like,
[44:24] Speaker 2: are we ever going to know how good or not
[44:26] Speaker 2: good he is? Because they're changing offensive coordinators all the time.
[44:30] Speaker 2: They're a run-centric team. After this year, this offensive line
[44:33] Speaker 2: is probably going to go through an overhaul. There's a
[44:36] Speaker 2: significant variant season to season with him. He loses A.J. Brown.
[44:42] Speaker 2: They've got a first-time play designer and play caller in
[44:45] Speaker 2: there again.
[44:46] Speaker 3: That's what I'm really.
[44:47] Speaker 5: At a certain point, though, the offense always looks the same.
[44:49] Speaker 5: So I think this year is a good test because
[44:51] Speaker 5: the offense is going to look schematically so different.
[44:54] Speaker 4: I'm going to have some grace for him in the
[44:56] Speaker 4: first month of the season.
[44:57] Speaker 7: And I think I, I think I have a good
[44:59] Speaker 7: feeling for how good I think he is because we
[45:01] Speaker 7: saw it in that, that when that absolute ass kicking
[45:04] Speaker 7: over the chiefs in the Superbowl, the way he played,
[45:07] Speaker 7: the way he pushed the ball, the way he just
[45:09] Speaker 7: handled the entire game. And, and like, to me, that
[45:12] Speaker 7: was him at his absolute best and, And that is
[45:15] Speaker 7: MVP Jalen Hurts. He absolutely has that ceiling to me. Now,
[45:19] Speaker 7: his floor is all over the place, to your point.
[45:22] Speaker 7: And that's part of what we're trying to figure out here.
[45:24] Speaker 5: Okay, so that's a no on Jalen Hurts. We have
[45:27] Speaker 5: Caleb Williams is really the only player here we just
[45:30] Speaker 5: haven't even talked about.
[45:31] Speaker 4: And maybe, I think the ranking is a good idea.
[45:34] Speaker 4: But I do think just quickly... Quickly, if.
[45:37] Speaker 5: Anyone has a feeling of of Caleb Williams is who's
[45:41] Speaker 5: the guy who it's talked about defining the position. He's
[45:44] Speaker 5: on the cover of Madden. I give him like a
[45:47] Speaker 5: little bonus point there. He does have something to him
[45:50] Speaker 5: that is more exciting than Trevor Lawrence, let's say. And
[45:56] Speaker 5: he was playing his best ball at the end of
[45:58] Speaker 5: last year. He's someone who has sneaky rushing value. I
[46:01] Speaker 5: think as well, I think that could be something, part
[46:02] Speaker 5: of his game that explodes this year.
[46:03] Speaker 2: It's so hard because I'm a big Caleb guy. Like,
[46:06] Speaker 2: everyone on here.
[46:06] Speaker 3: Is like, whoa. I know, and I know, too, and
[46:09] Speaker 3: I'll own this.
[46:10] Speaker 7: I know I was really leading the charge on him
[46:13] Speaker 7: last season at the end of the year because of those,
[46:16] Speaker 7: just the dazzling variance plays and the high leverage plays,
[46:20] Speaker 7: how dazzling they were.
[46:21] Speaker 3: The Bears, though, overall... really embodied.
[46:24] Speaker 7: Him in so many ways where they lived in high
[46:27] Speaker 7: high leverage situations and statistically between those and then the
[46:32] Speaker 7: rest of their offense and defense you know their run
[46:35] Speaker 7: game was outstanding pass game completely high leverage dependent defense
[46:41] Speaker 7: completely high leverage play dependent so for me what I
[46:44] Speaker 7: actually am looking for for Caleb Williams is like more
[46:48] Speaker 7: of the mundane this year. Now I want to see
[46:51] Speaker 7: the crazy cool stuff.
[46:52] Speaker 3: Let me be clear.
[46:52] Speaker 7: Like I love, that was the most fun we've had.
[46:56] Speaker 7: That was so much fun. It was can't miss television
[46:58] Speaker 7: every time they played at the end of the last season. However,
[47:01] Speaker 7: I'd like to see more of the, just the taking
[47:04] Speaker 7: the efficient stuff and this offense overall being a little
[47:07] Speaker 7: bit more efficient.
[47:08] Speaker 3: He already protects the ball incredibly well.
[47:11] Speaker 7: One of the best in the NFL at not taking
[47:13] Speaker 7: sacks or making negative plays. He, he just, I'd like
[47:17] Speaker 7: to see them operate the entire passing game just a
[47:20] Speaker 7: little bit more efficiently.
[47:21] Speaker 3: He doesn't always take the layups that are there for.
[47:23] Speaker 6: Him, but if it's a fourth quarter comeback situation, trick
[47:27] Speaker 6: shots only.
[47:28] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[47:28] Speaker 3: Like he's incredible. I can close. Incredible.
[47:31] Speaker 5: He, he also improved. And you mentioned in terms of
[47:34] Speaker 5: preventing sacks, he also doesn't turn the ball over. That's
[47:36] Speaker 5: a very intriguing combination.
[47:38] Speaker 6: Wow.
[47:38] Speaker 4: Play is divided by negative plays.
[47:40] Speaker 3: No fear. It's high.
[47:42] Speaker 2: Can I, can I simplify things here?
[47:44] Speaker 3: Please do.
[47:45] Speaker 2: I'm going to white flag my guy, Bo Nix. I'm
[47:47] Speaker 2: going to go ahead.
[47:49] Speaker 4: Frankly, we were all waiting for you to do that.
[47:52] Speaker 4: You know, all right.
[47:54] Speaker 3: Steve's like, okay, I think I should speak up here.
[47:57] Speaker 4: It's a no on Nick 26.
[47:58] Speaker 2: I love Bo and Nick.
[48:01] Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
[48:02] Speaker 2: John Payton's going to shade this whole podcast now.
[48:04] Speaker 4: Oh, I love it.
[48:06] Speaker 3: Just add us to the list.
[48:08] Speaker 4: I love that.
[48:09] Speaker 3: I love John Payton.
[48:09] Speaker 4: He called out Jeff Schwartz for... For not.
[48:13] Speaker 2: Knowing that Bo Nix is the deepest thrower.
[48:15] Speaker 5: It's so funny because it's the exact same conversation that
[48:19] Speaker 5: Drew Brees dealt with his entire career. Where, by the numbers,
[48:23] Speaker 5: Drew Brees is one of the best deep ball throwers
[48:25] Speaker 5: in NFL history. And everyone always said, like, oh, they
[48:28] Speaker 5: kind of have a cap on their offense because his
[48:30] Speaker 5: arm's not that good. And then now here Sean is
[48:33] Speaker 5: with this guy. I love, though, he's trying to make
[48:34] Speaker 5: up for getting in Bo's injury situation. designation business early
[48:39] Speaker 5: in the off season by standing behind this guy.
[48:41] Speaker 2: Yes. Okay.
[48:42] Speaker 5: So that's a no on Nick's, but I could see
[48:44] Speaker 5: Nick's Nick's getting there. That's a no on Jalen hurts.
[48:48] Speaker 5: Here's what I think we should do.
[48:50] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[48:51] Speaker 4: Here's what I think we should do. I'm going to
[48:52] Speaker 4: throw golf into this mix just to be messy.
[48:55] Speaker 3: Just to be messy, he said.
[48:57] Speaker 4: Just in case. Because I want the accuracy.
[48:59] Speaker 3: Goff's on though, right?
[49:00] Speaker 4: He is, but we could vote.
[49:02] Speaker 5: In theory, we could vote yes for Purdy and yes
[49:05] Speaker 5: for Caleb and then just have 13 guys and choose one.
[49:08] Speaker 3: We're into the agent of chaos.
[49:10] Speaker 2: Okay, so we've white flagged Trevor then too.
[49:13] Speaker 5: Are we white flagging? Would Trevor come in third or
[49:16] Speaker 5: fourth on everyone's list? I would think so, but he's
[49:18] Speaker 5: the guy who's going to earn it.
[49:20] Speaker 2: His way on.
[49:20] Speaker 4: Okay. So that's a no on Trevor. We're going, I
[49:23] Speaker 4: vote no on Trevor.
[49:25] Speaker 7: Okay.
[49:25] Speaker 4: What do you think?
[49:25] Speaker 3: What are you saying? He was third on everybody's list.
[49:27] Speaker 5: Third or fourth. Like, so there's no way he's getting
[49:29] Speaker 5: on your island. Is Trevor Lawrence getting on anyone's island
[49:32] Speaker 5: right now?
[49:33] Speaker 3: Not right now.
[49:34] Speaker 2: Not right now. He'll earn, I think he'll earn his
[49:36] Speaker 2: way on.
[49:37] Speaker 4: Trevor's not there.
[49:37] Speaker 2: No, I have, Man, this is brutal, man. Those are
[49:40] Speaker 2: two dudes.
[49:41] Speaker 5: I'm just making sure that Caleb or Purdy or, you know,
[49:45] Speaker 5: don't get punished for the fact that they weren't brought
[49:48] Speaker 5: up as early. And so I think using your ranking system,
[49:53] Speaker 5: I think we should each come up with a ranking
[49:56] Speaker 5: for each one of those three. If we feel like
[49:58] Speaker 5: the cases have all been made, if anyone has anything
[50:00] Speaker 5: else to say, I generally agree with you on Brock
[50:03] Speaker 5: Purdy's strength. If you look at the numbers, second in
[50:06] Speaker 5: completion percentage over expected, led the NFL in preventing sacks
[50:09] Speaker 5: when he was pressured, led the NFL in success rate.
[50:13] Speaker 5: He's just, he's just a good football player, Brock Purdy.
[50:15] Speaker 5: And so it's a, it's a tough, it was an
[50:18] Speaker 5: easier decision for me, Darnold over him. It's a tougher one,
[50:21] Speaker 5: him versus Goff versus Caleb. Now that I'm, now that
[50:25] Speaker 5: I'm down to it. And I voted yes on Goff too,
[50:27] Speaker 5: because I feel, I feel good about all three. Frankly,
[50:29] Speaker 5: I want to vote on all three.
[50:30] Speaker 3: Me too, but we can't do that, Greg.
[50:32] Speaker 6: No.
[50:32] Speaker 5: So let's all make a rankings unless anyone has any
[50:35] Speaker 5: final words on those.
[50:35] Speaker 3: So I'd like to introduce my ripcord.
[50:38] Speaker 4: Okay.
[50:40] Speaker 3: Hang on.
[50:42] Speaker 6: Somebody's on the island and we already voted and he
[50:45] Speaker 6: tries to take them off and reconsider them.
[50:48] Speaker 3: That's a ripcord. So I'm pulling the ripcord on you.
[50:51] Speaker 3: Golf is on the island.
[50:53] Speaker 4: Oh, I like it.
[50:56] Speaker 2: There we go. There's the loophole. There's the loophole.
[50:59] Speaker 5: All right.
[51:00] Speaker 3: I'm back.
[51:01] Speaker 4: Yes.
[51:02] Speaker 5: You cannot pull a member of the panel off the island.
[51:08] Speaker 2: Oh, that is a strong loophole.
[51:12] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[51:13] Speaker 4: All right.
[51:13] Speaker 5: So everyone's no then on Caleb Williams. That's how you
[51:17] Speaker 5: have to do it. If Goff is on, I would
[51:19] Speaker 5: have Caleb Williams over Jared Goff, which is why I
[51:22] Speaker 5: was thinking about it.
[51:23] Speaker 3: You should have voted then.
[51:24] Speaker 5: Yeah, but we we've done this before where we've just
[51:28] Speaker 5: had a lot of yeses.
[51:29] Speaker 4: And then at the end, we sort of.
[51:30] Speaker 2: My opinion, you guys have yours. I mean, that's what
[51:33] Speaker 2: I'm saying.
[51:33] Speaker 3: So, yeah, so I have.
[51:35] Speaker 4: So ultimately, it's yes or no on Caleb Williams.
[51:39] Speaker 6: Oh, well, I still stand by what I said about
[51:45] Speaker 6: Caleb Williams before.
[51:46] Speaker 4: Okay, so you're voting yes.
[51:47] Speaker 2: This isn't like it's easy.
[51:49] Speaker 4: Okay, then I'll vote yes as well.
[51:50] Speaker 7: So you're voting, I'm going to vote no because I
[51:52] Speaker 7: thought we already put golf on.
[51:54] Speaker 4: You did.
[51:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not taking golf off.
[51:56] Speaker 4: Okay, so we're split on that.
[51:58] Speaker 7: So let's talk about Brock Purdy and Caleb Williams because
[52:02] Speaker 7: that's really what this conversation has come down to. And
[52:04] Speaker 7: I think that's totally fine because honestly, their highs are
[52:07] Speaker 7: very similar. They take care of the football both. similarly
[52:11] Speaker 7: very very well they define now their franchises um i
[52:16] Speaker 7: i think for me i've seen more data with brock
[52:19] Speaker 7: purdy and i've seen more consistency over a couple of
[52:23] Speaker 7: years this last year for caleb was so exciting thinking
[52:27] Speaker 7: about what he can be and what he will be
[52:29] Speaker 7: into the future Um, I really, really like, I know
[52:32] Speaker 7: we're trying to separate these things, but I really, really
[52:34] Speaker 7: like for both of these players, the skill guys and
[52:37] Speaker 7: the coaching around them as well. Um, this to me
[52:40] Speaker 7: is incorrect. Like it's incredibly tough. I could talk myself
[52:43] Speaker 7: into or out of either of them. Truly.
[52:46] Speaker 2: So what about the swing vote here? Cause earlier you
[52:49] Speaker 2: said that you'd like to see him do more of
[52:50] Speaker 2: the mundane. So here's, here's, I'm going to put the
[52:52] Speaker 2: categorized to swing vote who epitomizes running their coaches scheme best.
[52:59] Speaker 7: Hmm.
[53:00] Speaker 2: And to me, that's a slam dunk.
[53:02] Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
[53:03] Speaker 4: And Purdy also....
[53:06] Speaker 5: Jumps out of that scheme, I think, in a way
[53:08] Speaker 5: that pleases Kyle Shanahan occasionally. Like, he does improvise. He
[53:13] Speaker 5: does have a lot of big-time plays, although last year
[53:15] Speaker 5: he made quiet growth in, like, preventing the big mistakes.
[53:18] Speaker 6: I think that he's the more polished of the two options,
[53:22] Speaker 6: and the consistency, as you mentioned, that kind of got me.
[53:26] Speaker 3: Like, we've seen more. We've seen the body of work
[53:28] Speaker 3: a little bit more, so we know.
[53:29] Speaker 7: It's a similar argument that I made for what I
[53:32] Speaker 7: love so much about how I've seen Jordan Love grow, right,
[53:35] Speaker 7: is because.
[53:36] Speaker 3: He.
[53:36] Speaker 7: Can take in the entire, uh, like infrastructure and ecosystem.
[53:40] Speaker 7: He can run it and bring it to life at
[53:42] Speaker 7: a much higher level than maybe it would look like
[53:44] Speaker 7: with another quarterback. But when he can, when the coach
[53:47] Speaker 7: maybe fails or the coach maybe needs him to do
[53:51] Speaker 7: to help make him right, quote unquote, he can take
[53:54] Speaker 7: the pencil. and color all outside the lines, but it
[53:56] Speaker 7: all makes sense. And that's what I think. I think
[53:59] Speaker 7: Caleb is on his way to doing that. And certainly
[54:01] Speaker 7: the high, high splash play, like the really cool plays
[54:04] Speaker 7: are among the best in the entire league right now.
[54:07] Speaker 7: But I think over time, it's like, I'm really, I
[54:10] Speaker 7: love seeing Brock Purdy break out of this like system.
[54:13] Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
[54:14] Speaker 7: Like I love seeing him be able to take Kyle
[54:17] Speaker 7: Shanahan's pencil and like color outside the lines in a
[54:20] Speaker 7: way that still makes sense and lifts the offense.
[54:23] Speaker 4: I agree.
[54:24] Speaker 5: I am voting yes on Brock Purdy for the presumptive
[54:30] Speaker 5: final spot on Quarterback Island.
[54:36] Speaker 3: Eric starts playing us off. Eric's really sweaty back there.
[54:42] Speaker 4: I know. I feel like I need to exhale. I need.
[54:45] Speaker 2: That was nerve wracking. I think because we've put some
[54:49] Speaker 2: slam dunks on so quickly.
[54:51] Speaker 3: Should I make us martinis now or what? Yes.
[54:55] Speaker 5: So we have Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson,
[55:03] Speaker 5: Matthew Stafford. We have Justin Herbert. That's number six. Dak Prescott.
[55:08] Speaker 5: Jordan Love. Jared Goff. Drake May. Sam Darnold. And Brock Purdy.
[55:16] Speaker 2: More proof that the NFC West is the best division.
[55:18] Speaker 4: And as much of a relief.
[55:23] Speaker 5: that that all felt like, it's actually not over because
[55:26] Speaker 5: I'm going to use my ripcord right now.
[55:28] Speaker 4: More riptide. Jared Goff, you're coming off.
[55:33] Speaker 5: I just feel too strongly that I like Caleb Williams
[55:37] Speaker 5: and that he makes more sense for this exercise coming
[55:39] Speaker 5: into this season. And that once I got here, I've
[55:42] Speaker 5: actually never even used one, I don't think.
[55:43] Speaker 4: So what the hell? Nobody has. Nobody has.
[55:45] Speaker 3: This is the first ever riptide.
[55:47] Speaker 5: It's like having challenges that you never use in your pocket.
[55:50] Speaker 4: Let's go. I'm taking Goff on.
[55:54] Speaker 7: Are you comfortable, Greg? This is the one time you
[55:56] Speaker 7: can use this.
[55:57] Speaker 4: Never used it before.
[55:58] Speaker 5: And I'm bringing Caleb Williams up for a vote that
[56:03] Speaker 5: this is the dude when we all convened at the
[56:06] Speaker 5: end of last season. It wasn't 12 quarterbacks. It wasn't
[56:09] Speaker 5: 10 quarterbacks. It was eight quarterbacks.
[56:13] Speaker 3: A lot of guys were hurt.
[56:14] Speaker 4: He was one of the guys.
[56:17] Speaker 2: That was there.
[56:17] Speaker 5: You know who wasn't hurt and who wasn't on the island?
[56:20] Speaker 5: Jared freaking Goff. And you know who was? And since then,
[56:24] Speaker 5: all this kid has done, you said, you know, Sam
[56:27] Speaker 5: Darnold is one of the youngest quarterbacks in the league.
[56:30] Speaker 5: I mean, Sam Darnold was one of the worst quarterbacks
[56:32] Speaker 5: in NFL history when he was Caleb Williams' age.
[56:34] Speaker 4: This kid is a true kid. I mean, he is
[56:37] Speaker 4: 24 years old. He is ascending.
[56:39] Speaker 5: If you ask all the sixth graders that my son,
[56:42] Speaker 5: you know, are in school.
[56:44] Speaker 4: With, Caleb Williams or Jared Goff? Every single one of
[56:47] Speaker 4: them is saying Caleb Williams. You know what I mean?
[56:50] Speaker 4: They might not even know Jared Goff.
[56:51] Speaker 3: We're going to need to put that to the test.
[56:52] Speaker 3: That is some real analysis right there.
[56:54] Speaker 4: Caleb Williams, you're on.
[56:57] Speaker 7: Listen.
[56:57] Speaker 2: I mean, I'm down.
[56:58] Speaker 3: I mean, you said it with your chest.
[57:00] Speaker 7: Listen, if you are going to use the riptide, he
[57:02] Speaker 7: is the correct person to put on. Yeah.
[57:04] Speaker 2: I mean, look, I've got no issue with Caleb Williams.
[57:08] Speaker 2: I think Jared Goff is the more refined. But the
[57:11] Speaker 2: splash plays, the excitement stuff. Okay. The Bears?
[57:14] Speaker 4: Defining the position. The Bears. The Bears have a lot
[57:17] Speaker 4: of juice in them.
[57:18] Speaker 2: I mean, it's... I don't have that... I have an issue,
[57:22] Speaker 2: but I don't have an issue like Jordan said.
[57:24] Speaker 4: We can't... Look, I love Jared Goff. I voted yes.
[57:26] Speaker 4: I thought.
[57:27] Speaker 5: I was definitely hot on him, and then I think
[57:29] Speaker 5: once we got the numbers down.
[57:31] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the thing.
[57:31] Speaker 2: We have dunked a couple guys too soon on this.
[57:34] Speaker 3: But note, if Jared Goff isn't on this list... I
[57:38] Speaker 3: don't know how I feel about the list.
[57:39] Speaker 7: This is honestly some expert takesmanship by Greg because he
[57:43] Speaker 7: did vote yes for Jared Goff earlier in the show.
[57:45] Speaker 7: So technically he can't be wrong when this comes back
[57:49] Speaker 7: in a couple of weeks.
[57:51] Speaker 3: So I just want that to be said also.
[57:53] Speaker 4: I guess 12 was a good number. It ended up
[57:55] Speaker 4: being good.
[57:55] Speaker 3: Oh, I guess it was. Yeah.
[57:57] Speaker 2: Here's the one thing, though. On the island, is there
[57:59] Speaker 2: an adult swim since now we're including the sixth grade class?
[58:02] Speaker 3: Oh.
[58:03] Speaker 2: We have to have an adult swim there.
[58:05] Speaker 3: Analysis.
[58:06] Speaker 4: I'm just saying.
[58:07] Speaker 7: Listen, I do think, to me, it feels like, I
[58:09] Speaker 7: wish we could have both. It feels right that both
[58:11] Speaker 7: of these are on the island. However, if you are
[58:14] Speaker 7: going to, and I have to be, it's my rule.
[58:17] Speaker 7: I have to respect my rule. You're going to use
[58:19] Speaker 7: the Riptide. and pull Jared Goff off, we can no
[58:22] Speaker 7: longer argue about Jared Goff. We have to argue who
[58:25] Speaker 7: goes on, and that would be Caleb Williams.
[58:27] Speaker 2: Caleb's on.
[58:28] Speaker 6: I think that we should note it on social that
[58:31] Speaker 6: Greg gives the riptide.
[58:33] Speaker 3: Yeah, take golf off.
[58:34] Speaker 4: I'm sure that'll translate easily.
[58:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, people will know exactly what you mean immediately.
[58:39] Speaker 4: I don't even know. Riptide, ripcord. Eric points out that I.
[58:43] Speaker 3: We got both this episode.
[58:45] Speaker 4: That I infamously used the Riptide for Gino.
[58:48] Speaker 2: You did.
[58:48] Speaker 4: Yes, you did.
[58:50] Speaker 2: You did. Nice call.
[58:51] Speaker 7: I do have to ask you this. Are you comfortable
[58:54] Speaker 7: with the fact that you.
[58:55] Speaker 4: Absolutely.
[58:55] Speaker 3: You've Riptided so early.
[58:57] Speaker 4: It's one of those.
[58:58] Speaker 5: It's one of those situations where if you've got a
[59:00] Speaker 5: good use for it, you use it.
[59:02] Speaker 2: There you go.
[59:02] Speaker 4: You don't want to go into the.
[59:03] Speaker 2: Office and wonder. Start it off. Make everybody else play
[59:04] Speaker 2: their way on. See if they can pump them.
[59:06] Speaker 3: Riptide it too soon.
[59:09] Speaker 2: All right.
[59:10] Speaker 4: No comment.
[59:12] Speaker 5: Colleen, what a treat to have you back in this studio. Steve,
[59:14] Speaker 5: what a treat to have you back. We will try
[59:17] Speaker 5: to get this exact foursome together for every single quarterback island.
[59:23] Speaker 4: And as Jordan mentioned earlier, it is quarterly.
[59:26] Speaker 5: So we will be scheduled to meet Hopefully after week four,
[59:30] Speaker 5: if that jibes with Colleen's international schedule.
[59:33] Speaker 4: Maybe week five.
[59:34] Speaker 2: Week five is when the international stuff starts.
[59:37] Speaker 4: Okay.
[59:37] Speaker 5: We got to do it before Colleen goes overseas again.
[59:39] Speaker 5: Although she's going over to Australia.
[59:41] Speaker 3: Down under.
[59:43] Speaker 5: We'll be busy on NFL Network. He was on Good
[59:46] Speaker 5: Morning Football today. He's going to be on the Insiders.
[59:48] Speaker 2: Talking ball.
[59:49] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[59:50] Speaker 5: And Jordan will be back later this week when we
[59:52] Speaker 5: do all of our predictions.
[59:53] Speaker 4: Let's hit the music. Let's get out of here. What
[59:56] Speaker 4: a treat to be back.
[59:58] Speaker 3: Quarterback guys go birds
[1:00:03] Speaker 5: How are the dogs by the way they're good
