[0:03] Speaker 1: Welcome to NFL Daily, where a Drew Aller quarterback battle.
[0:08] Speaker 1: I said, it is what the preseason is all about.
[0:11] Speaker 2: I'm Greg Rosenthal.
[0:13] Speaker 1: Nick Sook is making concerned eyes from across the country,
[0:17] Speaker 1: doubting that the Penn State rookie could actually challenge Aaron Rodgers.
[0:23] Speaker 1: We're taping this on Thursday night. Thank you to everyone
[0:26] Speaker 1: watching us live. Thank you to everyone who subscribes on
[0:29] Speaker 1: iTunes and listen to us as a podcast. All these
[0:32] Speaker 1: games aren't over yet, but Aler is cooking with the
[0:35] Speaker 1: third stringers and the Steelers.
[0:37] Speaker 3: I mean yeah, he's currently one hundred and twenty four
[0:41] Speaker 3: yards and two touchdowns. I would like to say half
[0:43] Speaker 3: those yards came on a catch and run by way Chin.
[0:46] Speaker 4: So let's pump the brakes here a little bit.
[0:49] Speaker 1: No, I will, and we will get to that catch
[0:52] Speaker 1: and run from a man I learned about today, Cayden
[0:54] Speaker 1: wet Jen seventy four yards on that slant. But we're
[0:57] Speaker 1: not going to start with the Steelers and the Packers,
[1:00] Speaker 1: and we're not going to just end with all these
[1:01] Speaker 1: preseason games.
[1:02] Speaker 2: It was a sneaky.
[1:04] Speaker 1: Fun slate because of maybe the most entertaining preseason game
[1:09] Speaker 1: since the Hall of Fame game a week ago. You know,
[1:12] Speaker 1: Cardinals just delivering every week, same team. Yeah, Cardinals, you know,
[1:17] Speaker 1: putting Jeremiah Love out there for the entire first half
[1:20] Speaker 1: in a game where we got to see Fernando Mendoza
[1:23] Speaker 1: for the first time, and there was plenty to talk about.
[1:25] Speaker 1: I'm going to make a prediction, shook here, God, this
[1:29] Speaker 1: is going to be the longest and the most lounguest
[1:31] Speaker 1: we talk about any one game in the preseason and
[1:33] Speaker 1: the most highlights that we have of any one game
[1:36] Speaker 1: in the preseason. And then after we talk about the
[1:37] Speaker 1: six games that went on Thursday night, we do have
[1:41] Speaker 1: some news that will hit from around the league. But
[1:43] Speaker 1: let's get to those highlights. And Mendoza didn't start the game.
[1:46] Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins did, but almost right away we got to
[1:50] Speaker 1: see Mendoza doing what he does best. Let's go to
[1:54] Speaker 1: that first completion that that really got me going from Mendoza,
[1:59] Speaker 1: which was to Benson over the middle.
[2:01] Speaker 5: It's a pig on first down down the field. Benson,
[2:07] Speaker 5: oh Man, did he thread that between three defenders?
[2:10] Speaker 2: Laser saw that Rich as a laser.
[2:14] Speaker 1: It'll play action timing. Uh love that And by the way,
[2:18] Speaker 1: that's Jason Horowitz. You're going to be hearing him and
[2:20] Speaker 1: Rich Gannon and Kirk Morrison giving us all these Raiders highlights.
[2:24] Speaker 1: We'll get to the rest of the Mendoza night, but overall,
[2:27] Speaker 1: you know your thoughts that sort of play, just what
[2:29] Speaker 1: you saw so far out of the rookie.
[2:31] Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, I love what I saw for most
[2:33] Speaker 3: of what Fernando Mendoza did once he replaced Kirk Cousins,
[2:35] Speaker 3: there was he looked like a kid who studied a lot,
[2:39] Speaker 3: like he knew when he looked at the coverage and
[2:41] Speaker 3: he looked at you know, where it was post snap,
[2:43] Speaker 3: He's like, oh, no, one's open. He immediately just throws
[2:44] Speaker 3: it out of bounds. He knows where to go in
[2:46] Speaker 3: his progressions. He's pretty decisive for the most part. Everyone's
[2:49] Speaker 3: a while. He hangs on the ball a little bit
[2:50] Speaker 3: too long, pats a little bit too much. He's got
[2:53] Speaker 3: a strong arm. He made a nice through outside the
[2:54] Speaker 3: numbers later in this game. I was I was very impressed.
[2:58] Speaker 3: I thought he looked a lot better than I don't
[2:59] Speaker 3: think I had a low bar for him, but I
[3:01] Speaker 3: was super impressed by him. I also will say this,
[3:03] Speaker 3: Greg last year's preseason MVP was Jared's did him. I
[3:06] Speaker 3: think that we're going to have a number of contenders
[3:08] Speaker 3: to be better than Jared's did him this year.
[3:10] Speaker 2: I mean there was one in this game.
[3:12] Speaker 1: Jalen Brooks is putting up receiver triple Crown numbers for
[3:17] Speaker 1: the Cardinals, but unfortunately not as important as Mendoza.
[3:21] Speaker 2: I agree with everything you said. The numbers aren't going
[3:23] Speaker 2: to end up crazy.
[3:24] Speaker 1: And they actually brought him back out after halftime and
[3:27] Speaker 1: there was a three and out there. You know, his
[3:29] Speaker 1: first throw was like a high one to Jack Best,
[3:31] Speaker 1: who made some nice contested catches. But ultimately you saw
[3:35] Speaker 1: the flashes on a play like that, You saw a
[3:38] Speaker 1: touchdown drive.
[3:40] Speaker 2: He took some big hits.
[3:42] Speaker 1: He was willing to hang in the pocket and go
[3:44] Speaker 1: through his reads, like you said, like a rookie, sometimes
[3:47] Speaker 1: hanging on too long. But he got to those second
[3:50] Speaker 1: third reads a few times, including on the touchdown throw.
[3:54] Speaker 2: Let's see that one.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Your third and goal.
[3:57] Speaker 2: We put it in the end zone.
[3:59] Speaker 6: Try and tie up this sid.
[4:10] Speaker 4: Jack Besh.
[4:11] Speaker 1: That was a simple one where he's on the first read,
[4:13] Speaker 1: get the ball out quickly. Like his feet I thought
[4:15] Speaker 1: were good today. I was thinking of a first down
[4:17] Speaker 1: he picked up earlier that drive where he really hung
[4:20] Speaker 1: in there and took a big hit. Good night for
[4:22] Speaker 1: Jack Best too, who really quiet disappointing rookie year right now.
[4:27] Speaker 1: It seems like he's probably number three on that roster,
[4:32] Speaker 1: but behind Trey Tucker, who made a nice play in
[4:34] Speaker 1: the Kirk Cousins drive. We'll get to that uh and
[4:36] Speaker 1: Jalen Naylor, but contested catches some nice like dump off
[4:40] Speaker 1: throws like this is what you want to see out
[4:42] Speaker 1: of Jack Best to taking a step forward with his
[4:44] Speaker 1: guy Mendoza.
[4:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually really liked the fact that Mendoza a
[4:47] Speaker 3: couple of times was willing to just take the check down,
[4:49] Speaker 3: like he went through the whole progression and then had
[4:52] Speaker 3: a little bit of an off balance start of the checkdown.
[4:53] Speaker 3: I think he got wiped out by a penalty, but
[4:55] Speaker 3: it was a nice play and just a nice example
[4:57] Speaker 3: of him being able to, you know, process and realize, hey,
[5:01] Speaker 3: you know, I don't have to go for the play.
[5:02] Speaker 4: I don't have to be a hero.
[5:03] Speaker 3: There was one play where he held onto it a
[5:05] Speaker 3: little long where Walter Nolan.
[5:06] Speaker 4: Gets a sack on him.
[5:07] Speaker 3: It was also kind of a failure on the part
[5:08] Speaker 3: of the right guard in the center letting him through again.
[5:11] Speaker 3: Shout out Walter Nolan, one of my favorite guys that
[5:12] Speaker 3: I want to watch this year. But for the most part,
[5:15] Speaker 3: he was decisive, like I said, and on that play specifically,
[5:18] Speaker 3: with the beauty of that is that he immediately sees
[5:20] Speaker 3: him spot drop in coverage and he knows, all right,
[5:22] Speaker 3: there's a window that's probably about two and a half
[5:23] Speaker 3: players wide. I know he's running a slant into that window.
[5:27] Speaker 3: The one thing I have to do here is get
[5:28] Speaker 3: it out on time and put it low to protect
[5:30] Speaker 3: him in the end zone. Those are things that you
[5:32] Speaker 3: don't really often see from a rookie quarterback. This is
[5:34] Speaker 3: the guy who played a lot of college football, and
[5:36] Speaker 3: he's very talented, and he's delivering already.
[5:38] Speaker 1: And don't get it twisted for everyone tonight. I know
[5:41] Speaker 1: they're not running complicated defenses. I know it's the preseason.
[5:44] Speaker 1: I'm not trying to gas him up too much. You
[5:46] Speaker 1: just love seeing these guys in uniform actually playing football
[5:50] Speaker 1: for the first time. And I do think you can
[5:52] Speaker 1: see when certain guys are a little overwhelmed, and you
[5:55] Speaker 1: can pick up different traits and you know, so far,
[5:57] Speaker 1: so good. It was nothing crazy, but he helps her
[6:00] Speaker 1: Asid kirk Cousins, Like if Mendoza is playing against some
[6:03] Speaker 1: future version of kirk Cousins, like the Week seven kirk
[6:07] Speaker 1: Cousins that you know might be struggling, and then the
[6:11] Speaker 1: coach Klint Kubiak has to think back and think, Mendoza
[6:13] Speaker 1: look pretty good in the preseason. Look, kirk Cousins went
[6:16] Speaker 1: out there and directed a very quick touchdown drive. Wasn't
[6:20] Speaker 1: anything flashy, but did kirk Cousins things like making quick decisions,
[6:23] Speaker 1: making sure he didn't get hurt and giving the ball
[6:27] Speaker 1: to his big tight end, Michael Mayer, who looked a
[6:29] Speaker 1: little a little more fleet of foot here in his
[6:33] Speaker 1: third season or is it his fourth season. Let's watch
[6:35] Speaker 1: that touchdown.
[6:36] Speaker 5: Last year we did go five and three as a
[6:37] Speaker 5: starter on third down flyers to Mayor he's open touchdowns.
[6:44] Speaker 4: What do you want to see the old drive of.
[6:47] Speaker 1: Preseason, you know, making someone miss. We got Ashton Genty
[6:52] Speaker 1: running behind Tyler Linderbaum on the first drive for some
[6:55] Speaker 1: for some first downs. Just it's all good. And Michael
[6:58] Speaker 1: Mayer is a sneaky big part of this team. If
[7:00] Speaker 1: he actually gives them a high quality tight end two
[7:03] Speaker 1: and they can play two tight ends most of the time.
[7:06] Speaker 1: That's as good, you know, could be as good a
[7:08] Speaker 1: two tight end pairing. If Mayer lives up to like
[7:11] Speaker 1: the player, he could be as anyone in the league.
[7:14] Speaker 2: With Brock Bauers.
[7:15] Speaker 3: You know what, I know something crazy In twenty twenty
[7:17] Speaker 3: two that college football season, Rock Bauers won the mackiw Award.
[7:21] Speaker 3: Do you know who was a finalist for that award?
[7:25] Speaker 2: Michael Mayer.
[7:26] Speaker 3: Yes, they're both on the same team now. It's exactly
[7:29] Speaker 3: the perfect scenario for a rookie quarterback to make some moves.
[7:32] Speaker 3: Even though that was Kirk Cousins throwing that touchdown pass,
[7:34] Speaker 3: which by the way, I thought Kirk looked exactly as
[7:36] Speaker 3: I expected him to. Arm looked a little a little
[7:39] Speaker 3: more zip on it than I think it did maybe
[7:41] Speaker 3: two years ago. Last year was about the same, but
[7:44] Speaker 3: impressive for him too. But it's just the idea of like, yeah,
[7:46] Speaker 3: they don't have a lot of receivers, but they have
[7:48] Speaker 3: a fun backfield, they have an offensive line that's gonna
[7:51] Speaker 3: be better just because you can't get really any worse
[7:54] Speaker 3: than it was last year, and.
[7:55] Speaker 4: They got a situation that's gonna be fun to watch.
[7:57] Speaker 3: Even if it's not necessarily going to be you know,
[7:59] Speaker 3: playoff contender caliber at this point. So I'm excited for them.
[8:02] Speaker 3: I'm happy with them, and shout out to Mike Washington. Baby.
[8:06] Speaker 3: I think he's my new favorite Raider. I think he's
[8:08] Speaker 3: more of my favorite Raider than even Brock Bowers.
[8:11] Speaker 1: If you are watching this, you will see the move
[8:15] Speaker 1: that Mike Washington makes on a fifty yard run where
[8:20] Speaker 1: he just shows incredible juice picking his way through the
[8:24] Speaker 1: hole then exploding past the Cardinals defenders. And I think
[8:30] Speaker 1: Ashton Genty can be a good pro. They're two very
[8:33] Speaker 1: different flavors. I don't know if Ashton Genty's getting fifty
[8:36] Speaker 1: yards on that play, you can tell me it's against
[8:38] Speaker 1: the backups.
[8:39] Speaker 2: It's like I formation, it's Kubiak with a full back.
[8:42] Speaker 2: I love it.
[8:43] Speaker 1: Mike Washington could add a little something to this group
[8:45] Speaker 1: so that you don't need to rely on Genty to
[8:48] Speaker 1: do everything. He's a fun little late fantasy pickup.
[8:52] Speaker 2: And I'm not just saying that.
[8:53] Speaker 1: I think you could tell things about running backs more
[8:56] Speaker 1: than any other position in the preseason.
[8:57] Speaker 2: Shook.
[8:58] Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, when I watched Washington darting through there, which,
[9:01] Speaker 3: by the way, that's a play that was propelled by
[9:03] Speaker 3: the left guard getting a pancake because he turned the
[9:06] Speaker 3: defensive tackle and just put him on the ground, and
[9:09] Speaker 3: then that opened up the whole bit. It's on Mike
[9:10] Speaker 3: Washington to find that gap and get through it. It's
[9:12] Speaker 3: the burst, it's the vision. It's the burst. And as
[9:14] Speaker 3: I watched him run through there, I'm thinking, like, man,
[9:17] Speaker 3: you know, maybe it's because he's wearing silver and black,
[9:19] Speaker 3: but he reminds me of like more of a throwback
[9:21] Speaker 3: like eighties style running back, one of the more athletic
[9:23] Speaker 3: running backs of that era. Like not this is this
[9:25] Speaker 3: sounds hyperbolic. I'm not saying he's this guy, but just
[9:27] Speaker 3: in terms of style, he reminded me a little bit
[9:29] Speaker 3: of a marking style and a little bit of an
[9:30] Speaker 3: Eric Dickerson.
[9:31] Speaker 4: Getting through the hold air and explode. I'm not comparing.
[9:33] Speaker 4: I'm not comparing.
[9:34] Speaker 3: I'm just saying the body type and everything else, and
[9:37] Speaker 3: I'm just like, and again the Radar uniform. He's got
[9:41] Speaker 3: a bit more of a of a stallion running style
[9:44] Speaker 3: to him, as opposed to Genti, who is more compact,
[9:46] Speaker 3: So I like the idea of having both those guys
[9:49] Speaker 3: in the same backfield.
[9:50] Speaker 1: I can almost hear our producer Eric thinking, you guys
[9:52] Speaker 1: are way too excited about football.
[9:54] Speaker 2: You've gone ten minutes on Raiders.
[9:56] Speaker 1: Card and you haven't even gotten to the Dakobe set
[10:00] Speaker 1: dime in the end zone to Marvin Harrison, quieting all
[10:04] Speaker 1: the critics out there.
[10:05] Speaker 6: Great coverage, They're set to the in zone into double coverage.
[10:09] Speaker 7: Touchdown Marvin Harrison Junior over the outstretched arms of Terry
[10:15] Speaker 7: and Porter, a seven yard strike in the Cardinals answer
[10:19] Speaker 7: here in the first quarter.
[10:21] Speaker 4: M there is so much to like about this play.
[10:23] Speaker 3: And not only is the offensive line sliding left off
[10:25] Speaker 3: the play action Jacobe getting out on the bootleg, it's
[10:27] Speaker 3: Harrison winning immediately off the line and having a step
[10:29] Speaker 3: on the defender. It's Jacoby stopping in the middle of
[10:31] Speaker 3: his rollout and just throwing it out there knowing I
[10:34] Speaker 3: have Marvin Harrison Junior out there. You guys want to
[10:36] Speaker 3: see Marvin Harrison Junior live up to his potential. It's
[10:39] Speaker 3: by playing with a quarterback who's just gonna throw it
[10:41] Speaker 3: out there and say, I know that guy's got the talents.
[10:43] Speaker 4: Go get it. That's a glimpse of what it could be.
[10:45] Speaker 1: As accurate as you are talking about Harrison there, you
[10:49] Speaker 1: know it's a good route.
[10:50] Speaker 2: Like he's barely open.
[10:52] Speaker 1: Jacoby's got a defender right in his face as he
[10:56] Speaker 1: is rolling right and he doesn't want to get hit
[10:58] Speaker 1: in the preseason either, and he the ducks away from
[11:01] Speaker 1: it as he's like throwing on the move as good
[11:04] Speaker 1: as Carson Beck was last week, like he didn't do
[11:07] Speaker 1: anything that good. That was some NFL quarterbacking. That was
[11:11] Speaker 1: a nice drive there by Jacoby. The ball just did
[11:13] Speaker 1: not hit the ground much in this game. Between Gardner
[11:15] Speaker 1: Minshew and Kirk Cousins and Jacoby Brissett, it just felt
[11:20] Speaker 1: like we're gonna do whatever we.
[11:21] Speaker 2: Want throwing the ball.
[11:22] Speaker 1: And that's why the Cardinals right now are my team MVP,
[11:25] Speaker 1: just giving us good entertainment for the preseason, because yeah,
[11:29] Speaker 1: they're missing those tackles. That inspires the comment here Mike
[11:34] Speaker 1: Washington greater than Eric Dickerson.
[11:36] Speaker 2: Just asking questions. I didn't say that.
[11:38] Speaker 3: I was just just saying in running style, it kind
[11:40] Speaker 3: of reminded me of that.
[11:41] Speaker 4: All right, Relax, relax.
[11:43] Speaker 1: I threw out Darren McFadden, and that's absolutely uniform scouting,
[11:48] Speaker 1: and Darren McFadden probably wasn't quite as nimble in the hole.
[11:52] Speaker 1: Jeremiah Love is the other reason I wanted to hit
[11:54] Speaker 1: this game hard. Fourteen first half touches, and it started
[11:57] Speaker 1: off slow, like you'd see some of the wheels turning
[12:04] Speaker 1: in his head as he's trying to make a decision.
[12:06] Speaker 1: And you have heard a little bit about that during camp,
[12:10] Speaker 1: and I did find it interesting they kind of treated
[12:12] Speaker 1: al Jeer as more of the starter, even though Jeremiah
[12:15] Speaker 1: Love was in there right away too, but then they
[12:17] Speaker 1: took him out. And Jeremiah Love is playing deep into halftime,
[12:22] Speaker 1: not just with Minshew, but you're into like the second
[12:25] Speaker 1: third teamers there, and he wasn't really getting into a
[12:29] Speaker 1: rhythm until late in the first half, and then he
[12:32] Speaker 1: does rip off a few plays. There was a great
[12:36] Speaker 1: spin move that you can see where it's just you know, insane,
[12:42] Speaker 1: natural make you miss ability, where he goes one way
[12:45] Speaker 1: and the defender doesn't even touch him as he's spinning
[12:48] Speaker 1: the other. There was also a really nice decisive run
[12:52] Speaker 1: up the gut where you saw the burst that is
[12:54] Speaker 1: just entirely special, and I think Micha Leffleur had to
[12:57] Speaker 1: be really excited about that. In a couple of plays
[13:00] Speaker 1: that he also had closer to the red zone. He
[13:03] Speaker 1: finished off his day much stronger than he started it.
[13:06] Speaker 1: But fourteen touches seventy three yards and one half is
[13:09] Speaker 1: like a little much. I hope he's not doing that
[13:11] Speaker 1: every week. But you get the sense maybe like they
[13:14] Speaker 1: wanted to see him in real action because they weren't
[13:16] Speaker 1: quite seeing it in the practice.
[13:18] Speaker 3: Yeah, especially like you said, after that slow start, I
[13:20] Speaker 3: think the first two carries were like two or three
[13:21] Speaker 3: yard gains.
[13:22] Speaker 4: It just didn't seem like there was much room to run.
[13:23] Speaker 3: And you're thinking, I know, this guy is a tremendous
[13:26] Speaker 3: athlete and he's not really getting the opportunity to show
[13:29] Speaker 3: that off.
[13:29] Speaker 4: So what do you do. You dial up a stretch.
[13:30] Speaker 3: You hope that the defender tries to shoot the gap
[13:32] Speaker 3: and comes up short, which is exactly what happens.
[13:34] Speaker 4: It's to stretch to the left.
[13:35] Speaker 3: You get him into a one on one situation against
[13:36] Speaker 3: the defender, and you say, go make a play, which
[13:38] Speaker 3: is exactly what it did. Now, Luckily the Raiders had
[13:40] Speaker 3: somebody else closing in to clean up the play, but
[13:43] Speaker 3: Love moves differently and this is exactly what you expect
[13:46] Speaker 3: from a guy you draft with the number three overall pick.
[13:49] Speaker 3: I was just worried, and like you said, fourteen touches.
[13:51] Speaker 3: I watching him get carries late in the second quarter,
[13:53] Speaker 3: and I'm like, get him off the field, Like, okay,
[13:55] Speaker 3: we see it. Put him on ice until the regular season.
[13:57] Speaker 3: Get him off the field. I'm excited for what he
[13:59] Speaker 3: can do with this offense.
[14:01] Speaker 1: I want to see starters in the preseason. We saw
[14:04] Speaker 1: a lot of them tonight. We're gonna get to Joe
[14:06] Speaker 1: Burrow in a second. I just don't want to see
[14:09] Speaker 1: that heavy a workload. I that's on base for like
[14:12] Speaker 1: thirty touches for a running back. But as long as
[14:14] Speaker 1: you know, if it's probably not going to be every
[14:15] Speaker 1: preseason week, if this winds up being his heaviest preseason
[14:19] Speaker 1: workload by a decent amount, I wouldn't be surprised. I
[14:21] Speaker 1: also think it's worth thinking about the fact that Tyler
[14:26] Speaker 1: Aljira is there and if Jeremiah Love is starting the
[14:28] Speaker 1: season like a little bit, you know, slow picking things
[14:31] Speaker 1: up and even workload would not surprise me. So fantasy
[14:36] Speaker 1: owners like don't freak out that that might just be
[14:38] Speaker 1: something that happens.
[14:39] Speaker 2: Let's move on.
[14:40] Speaker 1: Chase Besontas, by the way, the guard who they took
[14:42] Speaker 1: in the second round playing with the backups for the
[14:44] Speaker 1: Cardinals and got a little banged up there. So that's
[14:46] Speaker 1: just something to watch moving forward, Let's get to the
[14:48] Speaker 1: Lions and Cardinals game. I actually think this is our
[14:51] Speaker 1: only other highlight in terms of, you know what, the
[14:55] Speaker 1: the announcers that we get to in this show, and
[14:58] Speaker 1: it's an important one took. It is what I call
[15:01] Speaker 1: an omen I'm all about first plays, setting the standard.
[15:05] Speaker 1: This wasn't technically the first offensive plays, but it was
[15:08] Speaker 1: the first throw from Joe Burrow of the preseason.
[15:11] Speaker 5: And the Bengals working from under center and with play action,
[15:15] Speaker 5: Borough steps throws over the middle of completes just sort
[15:17] Speaker 5: of midfield. That's gonna be a familiar site. Jamar Chase
[15:22] Speaker 5: love that for you know.
[15:24] Speaker 1: I think that's Dan Horde doing the television for the Bengals.
[15:27] Speaker 2: I believe.
[15:29] Speaker 1: Look, the Bengals have talked about it. They showed it
[15:32] Speaker 1: in the couple of Burrow drives under center play action.
[15:35] Speaker 1: It looked very different from the normal Joe Burrow Bengals offense.
[15:39] Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to see the alternates on this from
[15:41] Speaker 3: the end zone angle, because I think I saw a
[15:44] Speaker 3: dig there from Chase and that's exactly the type of
[15:47] Speaker 3: receiver that you want to run there, which makes you
[15:48] Speaker 3: think it might have been a dagger concept out of
[15:49] Speaker 3: play action and essentially, what can you do to help
[15:53] Speaker 3: an offensive line that's a little bit better than It's
[15:56] Speaker 3: definitely better than it was four years ago, but it's
[15:58] Speaker 3: still not like great is you try to balance your
[16:01] Speaker 3: offense out by going more under center and running the
[16:04] Speaker 3: football and then building play action out of it, and
[16:06] Speaker 3: you hope that your quarterback is able to master the
[16:08] Speaker 3: footwork and the timing and then find his receivers. And
[16:11] Speaker 3: he has two very good receivers that he can do
[16:13] Speaker 3: that with in Jamar Chase and t Higgins. So you're right,
[16:15] Speaker 3: it's a great omen. I think it's an idea that, look,
[16:19] Speaker 3: we're not just going to have Joe in the shotgun
[16:22] Speaker 3: and just throwing the ball over the field every game
[16:24] Speaker 3: like that. We're going to try to create more of
[16:26] Speaker 3: a balanced and less predictable offense and keep defenses honest
[16:30] Speaker 3: because we know we have a very talented quarterback and
[16:31] Speaker 3: a couple of very talented receivers. And if we can
[16:34] Speaker 3: do this type of thing, keep a defense on their heels,
[16:36] Speaker 3: then maybe we can be even more explosive than we've
[16:38] Speaker 3: been in previous years. So it's a good sign that
[16:40] Speaker 3: all the concern about their more complex offense Borrow under
[16:42] Speaker 3: center everything else because it was a highlight, but there
[16:45] Speaker 3: was a low light as well. All the concern about that,
[16:49] Speaker 3: at least you can put some of that to the side.
[16:50] Speaker 3: When they execute like that, well.
[16:52] Speaker 2: I just want them to.
[16:54] Speaker 1: Actually go through with it and go through some growing pains.
[16:58] Speaker 1: Comment in the chat you know says Joe didn't get hurt.
[17:00] Speaker 1: That's a fantasticum.
[17:01] Speaker 4: He did take a hit.
[17:03] Speaker 1: He did take a big hit because Orlando Brown, I've
[17:05] Speaker 1: been noticing, hashtag noticing, been struggling in practice against these
[17:10] Speaker 1: Bengals pass rushers struggled in this game. Gave up two pressures,
[17:14] Speaker 1: two hits. I believe a sack on Joe Burrow. This
[17:18] Speaker 1: was Lions Bengals. I had Cardinals on the brain, and
[17:21] Speaker 1: I sort of forgot the Lions' involvement in this game
[17:24] Speaker 1: in general because they played their second and third stringers.
[17:28] Speaker 2: The whole way.
[17:29] Speaker 1: Jacob Sailors, who was very active, ended up getting hurt
[17:33] Speaker 1: at running back for the Lions, but it was Luke
[17:36] Speaker 1: Altmeyer for the most part for the Lions, so I
[17:40] Speaker 1: don't have a ton of Lions takeaways. Josh Dobbs came
[17:43] Speaker 1: in for a hot minute, but then they put Altmeyer
[17:45] Speaker 1: back in. He got intercepted late and the Bengals escape
[17:49] Speaker 1: with an important sixteen to fourteen victory. I'm a little
[17:53] Speaker 1: I'm a little wary of Orlando Brown in general. A
[17:57] Speaker 1: couple other just notes I'll throw at you, shook. Casius
[18:01] Speaker 1: Howell had a couple of nice pass rush wins. We've
[18:03] Speaker 1: been talking about him all camp for the Bengals, the
[18:05] Speaker 1: rookie pass rusher. And then Isaac Tasla. When the practice
[18:09] Speaker 1: reports matchup with the preseason results, that's when I think
[18:13] Speaker 1: you have a story. The reports in practice, Taslaw has
[18:16] Speaker 1: been struggling, not finishing plays. Tonighty had two drops. One
[18:20] Speaker 1: led directly to an interception, popped off his hands and
[18:24] Speaker 1: went in the air and picked off by the Bengals.
[18:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, early interception one of two for Altmeyer.
[18:30] Speaker 5: Ed.
[18:31] Speaker 3: I'm not going to overreact to this stage of the
[18:33] Speaker 3: preseason when you're playing with backups. But these types of matchups,
[18:36] Speaker 3: when you're facing a team that likes to roll with
[18:38] Speaker 3: more of their starters and test out what they have
[18:39] Speaker 3: versus a team that is content with their starters staying
[18:41] Speaker 3: on the sideline, you get some mismatches and you get
[18:44] Speaker 3: some ugly play. Not to mention the fact that it
[18:46] Speaker 3: was raining there, the ball was slippery. There were multiple turnovers.
[18:49] Speaker 3: Aldmeyer botched one himself I think was on a handoff.
[18:53] Speaker 3: It was an ugly performance from this Lion's offense, largely
[18:55] Speaker 3: because you know the their main guys weren't out there,
[18:58] Speaker 3: and you also got an example of why Luke Altmeyer
[19:00] Speaker 3: one undrafted.
[19:02] Speaker 2: Fair.
[19:03] Speaker 1: But that is the concern for Tislaw. They weren't playing
[19:06] Speaker 1: their main guys and he's out there.
[19:08] Speaker 4: Yep.
[19:08] Speaker 1: And for fantasy leaguers for instance, I just don't expect,
[19:14] Speaker 1: necessarily unless Tsaw really turns it round, for him to
[19:16] Speaker 1: play more than Khalif Raymond or their second tight end,
[19:21] Speaker 1: Like he just might be a part time player at
[19:23] Speaker 1: this point in his development.
[19:25] Speaker 2: And look the Bengals, I think they only got.
[19:27] Speaker 1: Three points with Burrow, very different than a year ago
[19:29] Speaker 1: when he lit the preseason up and scored a touchdown
[19:32] Speaker 1: basically every drive they stalled. Evan McPherson hit a long
[19:37] Speaker 1: one in one of the two drives, but otherwise they
[19:39] Speaker 1: didn't do much but just deal with the growing pains.
[19:42] Speaker 1: We'll see if we watch Joe Burrow again in the preseason,
[19:45] Speaker 1: might just be joint practices for him. The rest of
[19:48] Speaker 1: the way, let's go to the Packers and the Steelers game.
[19:52] Speaker 1: The Steelers walk away with this one, twenty eight to nine,
[19:56] Speaker 1: big victory. But I'm gonna just start where my heart
[19:59] Speaker 1: takes me when I see that nine.
[20:00] Speaker 2: What do I think?
[20:01] Speaker 4: Field goals?
[20:03] Speaker 2: Okay, and you know who's kicking those field goals?
[20:06] Speaker 1: Sack, Baby Pray freaking Smack is a gamer. He might
[20:10] Speaker 1: be missing kicks in practice. He's three for three in
[20:14] Speaker 1: the preseason, including a fifty eight yarder to end the
[20:17] Speaker 1: first half on like a one minute drill where they
[20:20] Speaker 1: kind of miraculously got in position. Kind of having some
[20:25] Speaker 1: fun here talking Tray Smack, but honestly, that's a performance
[20:30] Speaker 1: that just wins you a job. Like if they were
[20:32] Speaker 1: really worried about him, even though they took him in
[20:34] Speaker 1: the draft, It's like, Okay, you go three for three
[20:36] Speaker 1: in the actual game and you hit a fifty eight yarder,
[20:38] Speaker 1: You've made the team.
[20:39] Speaker 3: Yeah, to the person who was in the chat I
[20:41] Speaker 3: think last week and was concerned about the Packers not
[20:44] Speaker 3: bringing in more competition to push him there, I think
[20:47] Speaker 3: you can rest easily tonight.
[20:48] Speaker 4: I think Tray Smack has earned it.
[20:50] Speaker 1: Don't have a ton of other Packers takeaways. Baron Surrell
[20:54] Speaker 1: played like a starter. He seems like the guy across
[20:57] Speaker 1: from Lucas van Ness in this game. And yeah, let's
[21:01] Speaker 1: I guess, get right to the Steelers Drew Aller.
[21:06] Speaker 2: The numbers are a little inflated.
[21:10] Speaker 1: Because of that seventy four yard slant where the defender
[21:14] Speaker 1: fell that that's more a good run after the catch
[21:17] Speaker 1: by yeah Cayden wet Gin. But Drew Aller, who people
[21:21] Speaker 1: are gonna want to be excited about because he's a rookie.
[21:24] Speaker 1: He finishes ten for thirteen, one hundred and fifty three yards,
[21:28] Speaker 1: a couple of touchdowns, ran for a touchdown as well,
[21:33] Speaker 1: actually had a touchdown dropped, so it would have been
[21:35] Speaker 1: two passing touchdowns by the full back. What's that dude's name,
[21:41] Speaker 1: Nwakarowski or whatever, Like I don't know if he's making
[21:44] Speaker 1: the team or not. He did get a touchdown in
[21:45] Speaker 1: the end. They're kind of full back tight end on
[21:48] Speaker 1: the team. But Drew Aller looking pretty good, but so
[21:52] Speaker 1: did Will Howard. The young kids looked okay.
[21:55] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:56] Speaker 3: I wanted to make that point because Will Howard had
[21:59] Speaker 3: a touchdo and taken away from him by replay review
[22:02] Speaker 3: and let us score and drive. That ends up, you know,
[22:04] Speaker 3: finishing in a one yard rushing score and looked all right.
[22:08] Speaker 3: I want an also note not noticing, but note that
[22:11] Speaker 3: Will Howard took the field before Drew Aller, and just
[22:15] Speaker 3: keep an eye on this. Let's watch this rotation the
[22:17] Speaker 3: next two preseason games. See if Aller gets out there
[22:20] Speaker 3: before Howard. That might tell you a little bit about
[22:22] Speaker 3: how this backup situation is shaping up to look like
[22:25] Speaker 3: this season. Also, I'm not going to apologize, but I
[22:30] Speaker 3: am going to hand some due respect to Jeremy Bernard,
[22:33] Speaker 3: who had a really nice handful of catches and especially
[22:36] Speaker 3: a catch and broken tackle and run down the sideline.
[22:39] Speaker 3: He looked a lot better than I thought he would.
[22:41] Speaker 3: He actually really helped wake up this offense, which was
[22:44] Speaker 3: just underwater for their first possession and a half. Mason
[22:47] Speaker 3: Rudolph had like no time to throw. He was constantly
[22:50] Speaker 3: buried by the Packers pass rush, and then a Jeremy
[22:52] Speaker 3: Bernard catch and run kind of unlocks things and they're
[22:55] Speaker 3: off to the race.
[22:56] Speaker 1: Roman Wilson was out there, not many starters were I'm
[23:01] Speaker 1: not sure his snap count, but he did play some.
[23:04] Speaker 2: I saw him out there. Aaron Rodgers obviously didn't start.
[23:07] Speaker 1: So the fact that Jeremy Bernard, who is reportedly behind
[23:11] Speaker 1: Roman Wilson is struggled, not struggling, but not making as
[23:13] Speaker 1: big an impact as you'd hope from a second round
[23:15] Speaker 1: pick gets what four catches in this game for fifty
[23:20] Speaker 1: one yards, a really nice run after the catch that
[23:23] Speaker 1: it makes a big difference. And he made a great
[23:26] Speaker 1: effort on a near miracle touchdown from Rudolph where Rudolph
[23:30] Speaker 1: shook off a defender and would look like Steve McNair
[23:32] Speaker 1: or something out there. It was actually Rudolph's only incompletion
[23:36] Speaker 1: of the day ten for eleven ninety three yards. He
[23:38] Speaker 1: did take a couple of sacks where he held onto
[23:40] Speaker 1: the ball quite a bit, and I see the Rudolph
[23:42] Speaker 1: homers in the Steelers media like, let's calm down about
[23:46] Speaker 1: Mason Rudolph. Shout out to Jonathan Gannon, the Packers defensive coordinator,
[23:50] Speaker 1: just throwing every blitz possible. I don't know if you
[23:52] Speaker 1: noticed that, Like they were getting very creative. So you
[23:55] Speaker 1: can tell me that, oh, they don't gameplay him that
[23:57] Speaker 1: much for the preseason. Well, they've got a blitz package
[23:59] Speaker 1: and they they used it, and the Steelers struggled to
[24:02] Speaker 1: deal with it, including progerc Jones, their their former first
[24:05] Speaker 1: round pick.
[24:06] Speaker 2: Yeah, gave up a sack on theck.
[24:07] Speaker 3: They had a rushing touchdown also wiped out by a
[24:09] Speaker 3: whole Entroy Vatano lining up on the left side, got
[24:12] Speaker 3: his hands inside the man he was blocking his sleep.
[24:15] Speaker 3: You know, you kind to keep it inside the framework.
[24:17] Speaker 3: And it was very obvious.
[24:18] Speaker 2: The starters were out there.
[24:19] Speaker 3: They were there Rogers, Yeah, yeah, the the starting offensive
[24:22] Speaker 3: line was out there and they were struggling early. And
[24:24] Speaker 3: I think it's a good test for them because this
[24:26] Speaker 3: is a solid offensive line for the most part.
[24:27] Speaker 4: The interior is solid.
[24:28] Speaker 3: The tackle situation still has to kind of be sorted out,
[24:31] Speaker 3: but I think it's good for them to get a
[24:32] Speaker 3: test against a team that's actually brings some blitzes. It's
[24:34] Speaker 3: that's the beauty of preseasons. Like well, a lot of
[24:36] Speaker 3: things are vanilla. It's also a great environment to just
[24:38] Speaker 3: test things out. You're talking about Jonathan Gannon in his
[24:41] Speaker 3: first year as DC of the Packers. He's got to
[24:43] Speaker 3: get some reps with these guys and show them how
[24:45] Speaker 3: he wants to coach this defense. He's got to work
[24:46] Speaker 3: some things out, test some things. So you're getting tests
[24:49] Speaker 3: on both sides. In week one of the preseason, probably
[24:51] Speaker 3: the stretch of time in which we'll see most of
[24:54] Speaker 3: the CC, the starters, most before they kind of go
[24:57] Speaker 3: on ice in the next couple of weeks. And it's
[24:59] Speaker 3: good to at this point and it's good film for
[25:01] Speaker 3: you to correct.
[25:03] Speaker 1: I also enjoyed watching Jordan Love in this game. He
[25:06] Speaker 1: only played one drive. Marshaon Lloyd was with him at
[25:09] Speaker 1: running back. No surprise there. You know, he's kind of
[25:12] Speaker 1: a guy who like picks his spots and looks for
[25:14] Speaker 1: the opening and takes his time and to that that
[25:17] Speaker 1: could be a tricky start. He's not dissimilar to Josh Jacobs,
[25:20] Speaker 1: who is the starter there. So keep an eye on
[25:22] Speaker 1: Marshall Lloyd, Jordan Love ripped a nice ball for about
[25:26] Speaker 1: nineteen yards to Jane Reid, but the drive ended when
[25:30] Speaker 1: Jayden Reid's playing on the outside and you got to throw,
[25:32] Speaker 1: and he threw like a like a one on one
[25:35] Speaker 1: contested catch. Was a good ball, but Jayden Reid, you know,
[25:38] Speaker 1: doesn't make the play and it does make you think
[25:41] Speaker 1: like they don't have the biggest receivers outside. Those are
[25:46] Speaker 1: kind of routes you want to see Christian Watson, maybe
[25:48] Speaker 1: even Matthew Golden doing.
[25:49] Speaker 2: But it was Jade Reid. It didn't work.
[25:51] Speaker 1: And my guy is Sante Samuel with a couple of
[25:53] Speaker 1: really nice plays, a pass defense on that play and
[25:56] Speaker 1: locked up a different Packers defender to to end another drive.
[26:01] Speaker 1: So Asante Samuel playing well for the Steelers. All right,
[26:05] Speaker 1: it's time for the offseason ride along presented by Toyota.
[26:09] Speaker 1: Let's go to the Colts and the Patriots. Think the
[26:12] Speaker 1: biggest story here was Anthony Richardson. Now, six games going
[26:16] Speaker 1: on at once took you know, I'm assigning I'm giving
[26:20] Speaker 1: you a lot of responsibility on this Thursday night. I
[26:22] Speaker 1: don't know if you were able to have eyes on
[26:24] Speaker 1: each and every game. It's it's kind of impossible. So
[26:27] Speaker 1: I don't know if you have any Anthony Richardson takes
[26:30] Speaker 1: for me.
[26:30] Speaker 4: I do for I can do a couple. Okay, good here,
[26:32] Speaker 4: it's one of my lead notes.
[26:33] Speaker 3: I actually because of the way the games were staggered,
[26:36] Speaker 3: we got two at the same time. Then then Patriots
[26:39] Speaker 3: Colts slides in a half hour later, and then another
[26:42] Speaker 3: game two games slide in a half hour later, so
[26:44] Speaker 3: one point, I got five on it once, and that's
[26:46] Speaker 3: when it gets a little much, right. But the cool
[26:48] Speaker 3: thing about preseason is you know some of the guys
[26:50] Speaker 3: that you really want to watch are gonna be done
[26:51] Speaker 3: by certain points in games, so you can kind of
[26:52] Speaker 3: take your attention from those two games to the next
[26:54] Speaker 3: two games. Richardson and company show up right in between,
[26:58] Speaker 3: and I can't help but just continue to watch this
[27:01] Speaker 3: game when they're on the field, because for as much
[27:04] Speaker 3: as adversity as he has endured, and for as low
[27:08] Speaker 3: as his stock is right now, I cannot help myself
[27:11] Speaker 3: but just watching him and thinking, God, somebody can make
[27:16] Speaker 3: something out of this guy, because when he's in the
[27:18] Speaker 3: pocket and he lets it rip, you're like, oh, that
[27:21] Speaker 3: is not something that you get in an average quarterback. Now,
[27:24] Speaker 3: he was inaccurate at times. He underthrew a ball that
[27:26] Speaker 3: got tipped by a Patriots defender and still ended in
[27:28] Speaker 3: the arms of his intended tight end for a completion.
[27:32] Speaker 3: He threw a pass directly into the arms of a
[27:34] Speaker 3: receiver and it went through his hands and then was intercepted,
[27:37] Speaker 3: So that's not his fault on that interception. There were highs,
[27:40] Speaker 3: there were lows, but overall, I watched him take off
[27:43] Speaker 3: for a run and I'm just like, the thought occurred
[27:46] Speaker 3: to me and I said to myself, I'm gonna make
[27:48] Speaker 3: this point in the podcast. If his value is so
[27:52] Speaker 3: low that nobody's calling on him. If I were the Browns,
[27:55] Speaker 3: I would call and offer a seventh and see if
[27:57] Speaker 3: it gets it done, because I just can't help but
[28:00] Speaker 3: look at the physical tools and think, God, if you
[28:03] Speaker 3: just gave him time to cook, just marinate, just let
[28:07] Speaker 3: him bake in the oven.
[28:08] Speaker 1: I think Chris Ballard is so stubborn he does not
[28:11] Speaker 1: want to see him succeed with another team. Although I
[28:13] Speaker 1: guess so awful. I guess sending him to the Browns
[28:17] Speaker 1: would maybe change that look. Ian Rappaport reported he thought
[28:20] Speaker 1: that Richardson could be cut or traded this month, and
[28:23] Speaker 1: so maybe this was a bit of a showcase game.
[28:26] Speaker 1: I don't know if a seventh would get it done,
[28:28] Speaker 1: but there are plenty of teams where he would make sense.
[28:31] Speaker 1: That's one of them. It's funny if the Rams hadn't
[28:34] Speaker 1: drafted hy Simpson. I'm like, man, I'd like to see
[28:37] Speaker 1: him as like the second or third and you could
[28:38] Speaker 1: use him. He ran six times for fifty three yards
[28:42] Speaker 1: and a touchdown and a fumble, and you just can't fummable.
[28:47] Speaker 1: That was a game that was a play where he
[28:48] Speaker 1: could have slid, He could have avoided the fumble. Stephen Holder,
[28:52] Speaker 1: who covers them for the for ESPN, said, like that's
[28:55] Speaker 1: been a trademark in the training camp of like him
[28:58] Speaker 1: trying to do too much, and yet he had a
[29:02] Speaker 1: scramble and a design run which he looked awesome on.
[29:07] Speaker 2: Like they're just.
[29:10] Speaker 1: There just aren't many guys he I mean, it's obvious,
[29:14] Speaker 1: but he's he's a top five rusher of any quarterback
[29:18] Speaker 1: in the league.
[29:19] Speaker 2: And you know it might be top top three, top two.
[29:22] Speaker 1: You know, like he could be incredible and that way
[29:25] Speaker 1: had some nice throws finishes eleven for fourteen for one
[29:28] Speaker 1: hundred and forty five yards, but also you know, made
[29:31] Speaker 1: some if he decisions, they would have had more points
[29:34] Speaker 1: with him at quarterback if his running back was it
[29:37] Speaker 1: Seth McGowan, I believe fumbled on the goal line, which
[29:40] Speaker 1: was regrettable if you're looking for good news as an
[29:44] Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson fan and wanting him to be the backup.
[29:46] Speaker 1: Yley Leonard came in with the third stringers and the
[29:50] Speaker 1: it's supposed to flip next week and immediately under threw
[29:55] Speaker 1: a bad pass that he probably shouldn't have thrown under
[29:58] Speaker 1: pressure and threw a pick and it didn't move the
[30:01] Speaker 1: ball that well. For the rest of his time, I
[30:03] Speaker 1: think his completion percentage was around fifty percent and that
[30:06] Speaker 1: they weren't moving the ball.
[30:07] Speaker 2: So I don't know, score this one for a rich
[30:10] Speaker 2: We're not done yet, suck.
[30:12] Speaker 3: Also, we can't move off this game without talking about
[30:15] Speaker 3: Tommy Cutletz because he looked pretty awesome and I also
[30:17] Speaker 3: understand why his team won the scrimmage like he I
[30:21] Speaker 3: don't know if it's just because he's operating Josh McDaniel's
[30:24] Speaker 3: offense and it's against backups or whatever, but I was
[30:27] Speaker 3: very impressed he had a couple of long throws where
[30:30] Speaker 3: I was like, wow, I can't believe he got that
[30:31] Speaker 3: ball off accurately and completed it. He looked very comfortable
[30:35] Speaker 3: and poised in the pocket, like he knew what he
[30:37] Speaker 3: was doing. There was no speeding up of the clock
[30:40] Speaker 3: or anything like that. Andrey borgais law or missed a
[30:43] Speaker 3: couple of field goals, so it kind of cost them
[30:45] Speaker 3: some points on some of these drives, but overall, I
[30:49] Speaker 3: was just like, you know what, I liked the idea
[30:50] Speaker 3: of Tommy DeVito career backup who you know is in
[30:53] Speaker 3: the league for ten years, cash and checks.
[30:55] Speaker 2: You know what.
[30:55] Speaker 1: The Josh McDaniels system and Josh McDaniel specifically in New
[30:58] Speaker 1: England is.
[30:59] Speaker 2: Great at is taking.
[31:02] Speaker 1: Like a late round Ish talent, mid to late round
[31:06] Speaker 1: talent and making them pretty good.
[31:08] Speaker 4: You know what I mean, Like Matt Castle.
[31:11] Speaker 1: Matt Castle, I mean Jacoby back in the day, although
[31:14] Speaker 1: Jacoby ended up being pretty good, but Jimg, I mean
[31:17] Speaker 1: he did a great job with Mac Jones, which I
[31:19] Speaker 1: would put at a higher level. I'm not saying Tommy
[31:21] Speaker 1: DeVito could be at that, but they were pretty decisive
[31:24] Speaker 1: being like we like Tommy DeVito, better than Josh Dobbs
[31:26] Speaker 1: last year. There's a reason why they you know, they
[31:28] Speaker 1: re signed Tommy DeVito to it, you know, so they
[31:30] Speaker 1: think he can be a good backup and and good
[31:32] Speaker 1: on him. Let's let's actually show his his touchdown pass.
[31:35] Speaker 1: It was to Kyle Williams, who is one of my
[31:38] Speaker 1: favorite young receivers in the league coming into the draft,
[31:43] Speaker 1: and it's been really quiet, but Kyle Williams had an
[31:46] Speaker 1: incredible release and there was some talk that the third
[31:49] Speaker 1: round pick could get cut. But the Patriots reporters who
[31:52] Speaker 1: have been there say, look, he's gonna be a very
[31:56] Speaker 1: specialized role player. But there aren't many guys on this team.
[32:00] Speaker 1: It's basically him and aj Brown and he's very different
[32:02] Speaker 1: that can easily win one on one coverage like right
[32:06] Speaker 1: away off the line of scrimmage and then just go
[32:08] Speaker 1: and he can go more than anyone. So I think
[32:10] Speaker 1: there's gonna be a role for him. Nice nice footwork
[32:13] Speaker 1: there and nice throw by Tommy.
[32:15] Speaker 3: Debto preseason the perfect time for Kyle Williams to dust
[32:18] Speaker 3: a corner that may or may not make the team
[32:21] Speaker 3: and boost his own stock. By the way, the receiver
[32:23] Speaker 3: battle Royale that's going to happen in New England. I
[32:25] Speaker 3: took a little note here early on the top three
[32:27] Speaker 3: that were out there. I know this changed over the
[32:29] Speaker 3: course of the game as a dozen preseason games, Fton Chisholm,
[32:32] Speaker 3: Kaishawn Boody mccollins. Mccollins had to drop early in this
[32:37] Speaker 3: game too, So just keep it an eye as we
[32:39] Speaker 3: try to sort all this out. Who's going to make
[32:40] Speaker 3: this team?
[32:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they all will unless they could find
[32:45] Speaker 1: a trade partner for kaish On Booty, and I think
[32:47] Speaker 1: Kyle Williams will be wide receiver six, although does that
[32:50] Speaker 1: leave room? Yeah, they might have to make a trade.
[32:52] Speaker 1: Let's go to the Chargers one in Texans. I gotta
[32:55] Speaker 1: admit I don't have a lot from this game. It
[32:57] Speaker 1: was a lot of Trey Lance. It was a lot
[32:59] Speaker 1: of bad cups on both sides. Davis Mills actually played
[33:02] Speaker 1: with the starting offensive line for the Texans and had
[33:07] Speaker 1: a nice touchdown throw to Jared Wayne, the guy who
[33:12] Speaker 1: has been on that team for a few years. Was
[33:14] Speaker 1: involved in that Tank Dell injury a couple years ago.
[33:18] Speaker 1: They did draft that big blocking tight end Marlon Klein.
[33:21] Speaker 1: He had a big play down the field, so I
[33:23] Speaker 1: like that that there wasn't too much. I don't know
[33:26] Speaker 1: if you have anything interesting from this game from either
[33:29] Speaker 1: side of things. I believe that the Chargers walked away
[33:32] Speaker 1: with this. The Chargers backups killing them.
[33:35] Speaker 3: Yeah, nothing really new, necessarily, But Davis mill just looks
[33:39] Speaker 3: like the guy that we know he is. He is,
[33:41] Speaker 3: he's a plus backup. He he looks like a guy
[33:44] Speaker 3: who's gotten some time on the field and knows what
[33:47] Speaker 3: he's doing. On the Chargers side, not a lot to
[33:50] Speaker 3: talk about, really. I think's running back was I think
[33:53] Speaker 3: his name is Amar Johnson.
[33:54] Speaker 4: He had a couple of.
[33:55] Speaker 3: Rushing touchdowns djungle through a touchdown pass, which is fun
[33:59] Speaker 3: because that's a name that I thought we'd never hear
[34:01] Speaker 3: again after his college career.
[34:03] Speaker 1: I watched him in practice throw two interceptions on the
[34:07] Speaker 1: exact same throw in the practice that I went to,
[34:11] Speaker 1: and it was disappointing because supposedly he's had a pretty
[34:13] Speaker 1: good camp. I don't get the sense that either backup
[34:15] Speaker 1: quarterback is playing very well, and it's definitely Trey Lance
[34:19] Speaker 1: is the backup right now. But as I mentioned a
[34:23] Speaker 1: few shows ago, that's a logical JJ McCarthy place. Heck,
[34:26] Speaker 1: that's a logical Anthony Richardson place. I could see. I
[34:30] Speaker 1: could see Jim Harbaugh wanting either one of those because
[34:34] Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
[34:34] Speaker 3: Yeah, but when you pair, I'm thinking about best situation
[34:38] Speaker 3: to actually get the most out of him.
[34:39] Speaker 4: I don't know if I.
[34:40] Speaker 1: Like that for Richardson or for JJ. For Richardson, they're
[34:44] Speaker 1: both backups at this point. They're both backups at this point.
[34:47] Speaker 1: You got to just develop them Richardson or someday.
[34:52] Speaker 4: Someday.
[34:54] Speaker 1: I also heard a lot about Avery Smith was one
[34:57] Speaker 1: of the two undrafted free agents on the Chargers in
[34:59] Speaker 1: the Ben's backfield that are supposedly going to make the team.
[35:02] Speaker 1: He made a couple of really nice plays in this game,
[35:04] Speaker 1: and he is aggressive.
[35:06] Speaker 2: He did two.
[35:07] Speaker 1: Seat belt I'm locking you up celebrations in the same drive.
[35:11] Speaker 1: You don't see that often. Yeah, shout out to Avery Smith.
[35:15] Speaker 1: Another Yeah. I wanted to note that Ronde Gadsden and
[35:20] Speaker 1: Kamani by now we're out there, and that just kind
[35:22] Speaker 1: of confirmed what I was saying. Those guys are third
[35:24] Speaker 1: on the depth chart because the starters weren't really out
[35:26] Speaker 1: there like DeAndre Lambert. Smith is out there like the
[35:29] Speaker 1: backups are out there, so to me, like Gadsden and
[35:32] Speaker 1: Vidal are definitely lower on the depth chart.
[35:34] Speaker 2: You noticed a different dB too for the charges.
[35:36] Speaker 4: Right.
[35:36] Speaker 3: Well, god, I saw Labort Smith almost make a incredible catch,
[35:39] Speaker 3: fell out of his hands the last second.
[35:42] Speaker 4: Yeah, Genesis Smith is one of the stars of this camp.
[35:45] Speaker 3: Right he made an incredible interception that didn't count because
[35:48] Speaker 3: only got one foot in the end zone. I mean,
[35:49] Speaker 3: I'm talking video game. One hand up in the air,
[35:52] Speaker 3: grab it, snag it like it was nothing. These teammates
[35:55] Speaker 3: nearby did one of like these like grab the helmet,
[35:57] Speaker 3: put the arms up in the air, thinking, oh my god,
[35:59] Speaker 3: you just picked him off. The second foot didn't get down.
[36:01] Speaker 3: I even just in that play, I was like, oh,
[36:03] Speaker 3: I see why he's turning heads in camp. That's that's
[36:05] Speaker 3: incredible athleticism.
[36:07] Speaker 1: I want to go watch him. His reputation coming out
[36:10] Speaker 1: of colleges. He just didn't tackle like it drove our
[36:13] Speaker 1: buddy Ali Connelly crazy, Like the guy just didn't tackle.
[36:16] Speaker 2: He was like, you can't draft me. He doesn't tackle.
[36:18] Speaker 1: And you don't really see that as much a training camp,
[36:21] Speaker 1: so maybe you don't see that weakness showing up.
[36:24] Speaker 4: But yet Matt.
[36:26] Speaker 1: Bunny Smith was saying, like this kid is a freak,
[36:30] Speaker 1: Like he has been wowing people day after day. So
[36:33] Speaker 1: an interesting guy to watch. That was the off season
[36:36] Speaker 1: ride along presented by Toyota, because when people are the destination,
[36:40] Speaker 1: your ride is important. Learn more at Toyota dot com
[36:44] Speaker 1: and find the vehicle that fits your people. Titans forty
[36:48] Speaker 1: nine ers last preseason game that we'll mention. The forty
[36:52] Speaker 1: nine Ers started Curtis Rourke and then went to Adrian
[36:56] Speaker 1: Martinez at quarterback, So not a lot of big takeaways there,
[37:00] Speaker 1: but they did play Dejon Stribbling a ton and he
[37:03] Speaker 1: delivered with seven catches and sixty three yards in the
[37:07] Speaker 1: first half. So Kyle Sann wanted to test drive his
[37:09] Speaker 1: young wide receiver and kind of like Jeremiah Love with Arizona,
[37:14] Speaker 1: it's like, do we need that much workload for Deshaun
[37:16] Speaker 1: Stribbling who might be your wide receiver too, But yeah, yeah,
[37:20] Speaker 1: good to see him out there. And they did go
[37:23] Speaker 1: up against the Titans starters, so he he was out
[37:25] Speaker 1: there mostly with backups, but the Titans played their starters
[37:29] Speaker 1: early in this game.
[37:30] Speaker 3: You saw a little a decent amount of snaps for
[37:33] Speaker 3: the starters. Ty J Spears and Tony Pollard each got
[37:35] Speaker 3: four carries. Cam War did twelve pass attempts, completed five
[37:38] Speaker 3: of them. Mondale Robinson got four targets. I mean, these
[37:40] Speaker 3: are guys that you're gonna these are names you're gonna
[37:42] Speaker 3: hear in the regular season for the Titans. So and
[37:45] Speaker 3: it's again it's a new staff, So you're going to
[37:47] Speaker 3: see this more from new staffs trying to get their
[37:49] Speaker 3: team acclimated to what they want to do and you know,
[37:51] Speaker 3: get a little test run. But I do want a
[37:53] Speaker 3: trivia question for you, Greg, and I hate to put
[37:54] Speaker 3: you on the spot, but you know what, I like
[37:55] Speaker 3: to come out of nowhere sometimes if you I don't
[37:58] Speaker 3: have anything to offer, But can you aime the two
[38:01] Speaker 3: schools that both Curtis Rourke and Adrian Martinez went to
[38:04] Speaker 3: in college?
[38:07] Speaker 2: Pal was, No, I don't know, No Miami, Miami, No, No?
[38:13] Speaker 2: What did Adrian Martinez play? Why do I not know that?
[38:15] Speaker 4: He finished his career at Nebraska? He began his career
[38:20] Speaker 4: at Kansas State.
[38:21] Speaker 3: But the one, the reason I really asked this is
[38:23] Speaker 3: Curtis Rourke because he was a Mac guy. He started
[38:27] Speaker 3: his career where Greg, I don't know Ohio University, and
[38:32] Speaker 3: you know where he ended up. He was the predecessor
[38:36] Speaker 3: to last year's Heisman Trophy winner because he played football
[38:39] Speaker 3: at Indiana to close his college career.
[38:42] Speaker 1: Took his took his on it, shook his play in
[38:44] Speaker 1: EA college, took his grinding mac tape, and he's loving
[38:50] Speaker 1: his Ohio. Uh you you your team was like the
[38:54] Speaker 1: worst team in college football just.
[38:56] Speaker 4: Two years ago. Two years ago, State Golden flashes.
[39:00] Speaker 2: On the comeback trail.
[39:02] Speaker 4: Yeah, we had a good year last year. We're on
[39:04] Speaker 4: our way back up.
[39:05] Speaker 2: We're getting better. So that was the preseason games.
[39:07] Speaker 1: We're gonna hit all the rest of the preseason games
[39:10] Speaker 1: live on YouTube at seven eastern, four Pacific on Sunday
[39:16] Speaker 1: and putting the podcast up quickly after that. That'll be
[39:19] Speaker 1: me and Jordan rodrieg on Sunday before we go, just
[39:22] Speaker 1: gonna hit some quick items of news. The Panthers signed
[39:26] Speaker 1: Darren Waller. I was expecting this to happen earlier. Chuba Hubbard,
[39:32] Speaker 1: by the way, is week to week. So Jonathan Brooks,
[39:36] Speaker 1: he's got a chance to be your Week one starter
[39:37] Speaker 1: at running back if he can stay healthy for the Panthers.
[39:40] Speaker 1: But I really like this signing. I don't want to
[39:42] Speaker 1: get too crazy about Darren Waller in the year twenty
[39:44] Speaker 1: twenty six, but they need something at tight end. Jordan
[39:48] Speaker 1: was talking about needing more and I thought Darren Waller
[39:51] Speaker 1: had some real juice late last season. I think he
[39:54] Speaker 1: would be a member of the Los Angeles Chargers right
[39:56] Speaker 1: now with McDaniel because McDaniel liked using him, but they're
[40:00] Speaker 1: so deep it just did not make sense as a destination.
[40:03] Speaker 1: So Darren Waller adding a little juice potentially to a
[40:06] Speaker 1: group that could really use it.
[40:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, last year, there was a period about midway through
[40:13] Speaker 3: the season, especially after Tyreek Hill went down, where Darren
[40:15] Speaker 3: Waller was the focus of the Dolphins passing attack. He
[40:18] Speaker 3: was the only guy scoring touchdowns for them for a
[40:19] Speaker 3: little bit. So he can obviously still do it even
[40:22] Speaker 3: though he's walked away from football once already. I don't
[40:26] Speaker 3: understand what's going on with Like you said, they needed
[40:28] Speaker 3: something at tight end, but like this goes back to
[40:30] Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame game. I'm seeing Jatavian Sanders out
[40:32] Speaker 3: there getting like pretty significant reps early in that game,
[40:36] Speaker 3: and Tommy Tremble didn't play, and I'm just thinking, like
[40:40] Speaker 3: what is Dave Canal's's view of his entire tight end room.
[40:43] Speaker 3: Mitchell Evans had dealt with an injury earlier. I think
[40:45] Speaker 3: he's back down fine. I actually this is a deep
[40:48] Speaker 3: group in my opinion. But I'm wondering, like, as Sanders
[40:51] Speaker 3: on the bubble, because if I'm a team that needs
[40:52] Speaker 3: a tight end, I'm taking a flyer on him for sure.
[40:56] Speaker 2: That's fair.
[40:57] Speaker 1: I think what this says is, yeah, they're not happy
[41:00] Speaker 1: with their kind of catch first tight ends, which would
[41:03] Speaker 1: be Sanders and certainly would be Tommy Trample, so one
[41:08] Speaker 1: or the other that they feel like they needed another guy,
[41:11] Speaker 1: because that's a signing that you don't make in the
[41:14] Speaker 1: offseason because you want it to work out a different way.
[41:16] Speaker 2: Didn't work out that way.
[41:17] Speaker 1: The Seahawks made a signing that was kind of foreshadowed
[41:22] Speaker 1: on Hard Knocks. Got to wonder if the Hard Knocks
[41:24] Speaker 1: producers had an idea that the Seahawks were signing Terry
[41:26] Speaker 1: and Arnold, because if you watch the show, not only
[41:29] Speaker 1: did they feature the possible signing of Arnold and some
[41:32] Speaker 1: behind the scenes conversations pretty prominently, but they literally ended
[41:36] Speaker 1: the show with like him walking off like it was
[41:39] Speaker 1: the last thing that they showed. And now Terry on Arnold,
[41:42] Speaker 1: who is facing some pretty serious accusations felony, including a robbery,
[41:49] Speaker 1: is a member of the Seattle Seahawks. He fits the
[41:52] Speaker 1: mold physically shook of the type of players that Mike
[41:57] Speaker 1: McDonald and John Schneider want to go.
[41:59] Speaker 2: After in this sect.
[42:02] Speaker 1: I saw this positioned as a bit of a heat
[42:04] Speaker 1: check for this team. Yeah, it is an interesting signing
[42:08] Speaker 1: by Seattle.
[42:09] Speaker 3: That's a great description because this feels like one of
[42:12] Speaker 3: those signings that what kind of team would make this
[42:14] Speaker 3: signing in the past, the Chiefs.
[42:17] Speaker 4: The Chiefs would would make Chiefs.
[42:18] Speaker 2: In the middle of their dynasty run.
[42:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, they would just be like, it's screw it, bring
[42:22] Speaker 3: him on board. Football wise, dealt with injuries in Detroit,
[42:26] Speaker 3: lack of consistency kind of stemming from that. Never lived
[42:29] Speaker 3: up to the expectation that came with his draft status.
[42:32] Speaker 3: But I just have to think, like is he even
[42:35] Speaker 3: gonna play? Like is this one of those things, like
[42:37] Speaker 3: you said, heat check where it's like, well, hey, if
[42:39] Speaker 3: it all works out, then we got a former first
[42:40] Speaker 3: round pick on our team.
[42:41] Speaker 4: It's like do you need that right now? But you
[42:44] Speaker 4: are off of Super Bowl.
[42:45] Speaker 1: So they've turned Josh Job into like a real deal player,
[42:50] Speaker 1: a guy yeah that Philadelphia didn't want. They do well
[42:54] Speaker 1: with these kind of physical, handsy corners. They tend to
[42:56] Speaker 1: coach them up well. I don't know if terry On
[42:59] Speaker 1: Arnold will be available early in the season or at.
[43:02] Speaker 2: All in the season.
[43:04] Speaker 1: His off field arrest, you know, consideration is significant. I
[43:07] Speaker 1: did ask around. I think there is a belief that
[43:11] Speaker 1: a suspension is a strong possibility, or putting him on
[43:14] Speaker 1: the commissioner's exemp list is a strong possibility.
[43:16] Speaker 2: We'll see.
[43:17] Speaker 1: But the Seattle Seahawks taking a chance on tarry On Arnold,
[43:21] Speaker 1: who Kannakua is a player we mentioned could possibly be
[43:24] Speaker 1: suspended by the league. Sean McVay says that he is
[43:27] Speaker 1: expected back next week. They're calling his injury soreness like
[43:32] Speaker 1: lower body soreness. Miles Garrett also missed his seventh practice
[43:37] Speaker 1: of training camp with some knee swelling, so that those
[43:40] Speaker 1: are injuries to watch there. But Pooka will be back.
[43:42] Speaker 1: They are going to start Stetson Bennett at quarterback.
[43:44] Speaker 2: By the way, for.
[43:45] Speaker 1: Jordan rod Riegs first appearance as the color analyst of
[43:52] Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Rams, how about that.
[43:55] Speaker 2: Go let's go.
[43:57] Speaker 6: Look.
[43:57] Speaker 1: I mean, I knew that mcavay knew that when we
[44:00] Speaker 1: were there last week, and you couldn't have just announced
[44:03] Speaker 1: it a little earlier so we could have enjoyed it
[44:05] Speaker 1: with her on the show. But she's already, you know,
[44:07] Speaker 1: on our way to the game. But we'll be watching
[44:09] Speaker 1: and I'll be looking forward to that. That's pretty awesome
[44:12] Speaker 1: news with our friend JB. Long.
[44:13] Speaker 3: That's one heck of a torch passing, by the way,
[44:15] Speaker 3: from Mina Kaimes to Jordan rod rieg Man, a couple
[44:18] Speaker 3: of all stars right there to.
[44:20] Speaker 1: The greats, And yeah, that's a great tradition. And I've
[44:24] Speaker 1: been going through like different players and their usage telling
[44:28] Speaker 1: me just a little something. I forgot to make the
[44:31] Speaker 1: point that cam Ward, after delivering like a first drive
[44:36] Speaker 1: touchdown where you made a couple of nice throws, they
[44:39] Speaker 1: keep them out there for a handful of other drives
[44:42] Speaker 1: that don't go as well.
[44:43] Speaker 2: They want them to get the work.
[44:44] Speaker 1: That to me, that's like a little telling of what
[44:47] Speaker 1: like Robert Sala wants to to see stuff. And I
[44:52] Speaker 1: bring that all up, you know, right now to point
[44:55] Speaker 1: out that the Rams traditionally never play their backup quarterbacks.
[44:58] Speaker 1: And I heard, yes, speculation that they weren't going to
[45:02] Speaker 1: play Stetson Bennett in this preseason. But I've also read
[45:06] Speaker 1: and seen with my own eyes that after a quick
[45:09] Speaker 1: start to camp he has been struggling, and him playing
[45:12] Speaker 1: in this game indicates to me it's like, you got
[45:17] Speaker 1: to go earn that job, bro. And we know Jimmy
[45:21] Speaker 1: Garoppolo's number. I don't know if he's left LA yet.
[45:24] Speaker 1: Like the answer to like who's their backup ty Simpson
[45:28] Speaker 1: or stets and Bennett might be neither.
[45:29] Speaker 3: Still well, okay, but at that point then you're thinking
[45:32] Speaker 3: about a roster constraint, That's what I'm saying. But this
[45:37] Speaker 3: they've had this weird fascination with him or something.
[45:40] Speaker 2: He goes to some other team or he goes to
[45:42] Speaker 2: your practice squad, and.
[45:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't imagine a lot of teams should be
[45:45] Speaker 3: picking up the phone to get him.
[45:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Okay, just just throwing that out there. Jordan Tyson,
[45:52] Speaker 1: the Saints rookie receiver who's been lighting up camp, left
[45:55] Speaker 1: practice with a hamstring injury. He had a ton of
[45:57] Speaker 1: hamstring problems throughout his college career and into the draft process.
[46:01] Speaker 1: Might not be serious, but the fact that it's a
[46:02] Speaker 1: hamstring injury is worth noting. Jadarian Price, I should have
[46:06] Speaker 1: noted with the Seahawks did return to practice, so that
[46:09] Speaker 1: was great to see. The rookie running back has missed
[46:11] Speaker 1: a lot of training camp is back in practicing. I
[46:14] Speaker 1: saw from Ian Rappaport Rashid Rice is not expected to
[46:17] Speaker 1: be suspended by the NFL. He was suspended previously for
[46:21] Speaker 1: his latest infraction, and that's kind of the thinking there.
[46:25] Speaker 2: And then I forgot to mention in my.
[46:26] Speaker 1: Joint practice rundown on our power ranking show, one of
[46:30] Speaker 1: the joint practices, and it was the most lopsided one
[46:33] Speaker 1: and they did two days, so I'm glad I waited
[46:35] Speaker 1: to hear. The second day of confirmation, the commanders wiped
[46:38] Speaker 1: the floor with the Dolphins up and down the field.
[46:41] Speaker 1: Jaden Daniels look at amazing Stefan Diggs. Every commander's reporter
[46:45] Speaker 1: is like Stephan Diggs has immediately made every other receiver
[46:49] Speaker 1: on the roster except for Terry McLaurin, look like amateurs,
[46:52] Speaker 1: Like he's obviously the second best receiver on this roster
[46:55] Speaker 1: by a good amount right away. And the Miami Dolphins
[46:58] Speaker 1: did not look overly competitive in either of the practices.
[47:01] Speaker 3: Apparently, if that file that under the least surprising things
[47:04] Speaker 3: I've heard this week, maybe this month. It's only August thirteenth.
[47:08] Speaker 2: Not surprising.
[47:09] Speaker 1: Unfortunately, I am a little surprised of the struggles Gino
[47:13] Speaker 1: had back to back days against the Bucks. Reportedly the
[47:15] Speaker 1: Jets offense, the starting offense not doing so well.
[47:18] Speaker 2: So just dim mean some of that buzz.
[47:22] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, we talked about the fact that they
[47:24] Speaker 3: were lighting up the Jets defense, that it was a
[47:26] Speaker 3: concerning side for the Jets. That's the beauty of joint practices.
[47:31] Speaker 3: You get a little bit of a measuring stick and realize,
[47:33] Speaker 3: oh god, we're not as good as I thought we were.
[47:35] Speaker 1: Pretty big revenge joint practice, the rare revenge joint practice
[47:40] Speaker 1: by Todd Bowles against his former employer. Man, I gotta say,
[47:45] Speaker 1: I love preseason football being back.
[47:48] Speaker 2: You got to embrace it for what it is.
[47:49] Speaker 1: I'm sure when we do our week three preseason recap
[47:53] Speaker 1: we will be more than done with it. But this
[47:55] Speaker 1: first week, now it's transitioned, is often the most interesting one.
[48:00] Speaker 1: It's certainly like one and two, and then it really
[48:04] Speaker 1: really dies off.
[48:04] Speaker 6: This.
[48:05] Speaker 1: So this was fun, Shook, and we'll be covering the
[48:07] Speaker 1: rest of the preseason all month long on NFL Daily.
[48:11] Speaker 3: Yeah this might be a little bit of recency bias,
[48:12] Speaker 3: but I felt like this, this first night of games
[48:16] Speaker 3: had more medium to it for a preseason than years past.
[48:18] Speaker 1: And those Jeremiah love and uniforms like, yeah, this is
[48:22] Speaker 1: what we want. So, as I mentioned, we will back
[48:24] Speaker 1: on Sunday. Thank you, Shook. You are getting a well
[48:27] Speaker 1: deserved and rare weekend off, not from work because NFL
[48:30] Speaker 1: dot com has you working, but from NFL Daily at least.
[48:33] Speaker 2: So let's hit that music.
[48:34] Speaker 1: We will be back on Sunday evening seven pm Eastern,
[48:40] Speaker 1: four pm Pacific on YouTube. There's a big slate of
[48:44] Speaker 1: games Friday Saturday. We will recap it all and all
[48:48] Speaker 1: the news that's happening around the training camps. I got
[48:51] Speaker 1: so many nuggets that don't even have to do with
[48:53] Speaker 1: the preseason. We'll see you though,
