Chrissy has a new obsession… blind boxes, Sunny Angels, Hironos and basically anything tiny, cute and completely unnecessary. So naturally, she decides Steph needs one too. Will Steph finally understand the joy of opening a mystery box and become just as obsessed? Absolutely not. But Chrissy isn’t giving up that easily. From being mistaken for someone buying toys for her grandkids to spending money on things that simply make her happy, this bonus episode is a very important reminder: sometimes you don’t need to justify what brings you joy. Even if everyone else is judging you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:05] Speaker 1: A Poche production. And action. I'm Chrissy Hearn.
[0:14] Speaker 2: And I am Steph DeSouza.
[0:16] Speaker 3: And our podcast is Best Life Fending.
[0:19] Speaker 2: Do you want to be my wing woman?
[0:23] Speaker 1: Be nice to yourself.
[0:24] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[0:25] Speaker 1: Don't be so hard on yourself. I've got something for you.
[0:28] Speaker 1: I think you are going to love, adore and cherish. Now,
[0:32] Speaker 1: I want you to open your mind because I reflect
[0:34] Speaker 1: back to when we went to Pop Mart in Sydney
[0:37] Speaker 1: and you were fulfilling all of the things that I
[0:41] Speaker 1: love so desperately now that I'm over 50 and I
[0:43] Speaker 1: have this abundance of cash and I can buy things
[0:46] Speaker 1: that potentially are shit that make me feel good.
[0:49] Speaker 3: And look, I'm really happy for them to make you
[0:51] Speaker 3: feel good.
[0:52] Speaker 2: I'm supportive of you feeling good.
[0:54] Speaker 1: Yes, but you also had your judgy face on and
[0:57] Speaker 1: I didn't.
[0:57] Speaker 2: It's just not for me.
[0:58] Speaker 1: No, it's just not for you. However, I've now become
[1:00] Speaker 1: obsessed with what they are called Hippas.
[1:03] Speaker 2: Hippas.
[1:04] Speaker 1: Hippas. What is a hippa? They originate from Japan.
[1:07] Speaker 3: Okay.
[1:08] Speaker 1: Okay. And they are little things that make your heart warm. Okay.
[1:13] Speaker 1: So this is a little hippa. Musafan. It's a brand.
[1:17] Speaker 2: Musafan.
[1:18] Speaker 1: Thank you. They come from Japan. And they're little things
[1:21] Speaker 1: that stick on the side of things.
[1:24] Speaker 2: Oh, are these what you have on your laptop?
[1:26] Speaker 1: This is what I have on my laptop. Oh, I
[1:27] Speaker 1: actually like them. They're very cool because this is a
[1:30] Speaker 1: new obsession. I've gone from the fluffy things over to
[1:33] Speaker 1: what's called Sunny Angels. And I can take a photo
[1:36] Speaker 1: and show you. I love obsessed.
[1:38] Speaker 3: I've heard of Sunny Angels because I went to Hayley Lewis's,
[1:42] Speaker 3: who was the Olympic swimmer.
[1:43] Speaker 1: Yes, she has them, doesn't she?
[1:45] Speaker 2: I went to her shop.
[1:47] Speaker 3: When I was on my book tour, my sister dragged
[1:49] Speaker 3: me there. She has a beautiful little shop here in Brisbane.
[1:51] Speaker 1: I need to go.
[1:52] Speaker 2: Yes, and she sells the Sunny Angels.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Well, so the Sunny Angels are now my obsession. I've
[1:57] Speaker 1: moved on, not that I'll ever move on.
[1:59] Speaker 2: We need to get you to Hayley's shop.
[2:00] Speaker 1: We do. We do, absolutely. So I've purchased you your
[2:04] Speaker 1: own little kipper.
[2:04] Speaker 2: Oh, is this for me?
[2:06] Speaker 3: Yes.
[2:06] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[2:07] Speaker 1: All right.
[2:08] Speaker 2: Thank you for thinking of me.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Okay, now open it up.
[2:10] Speaker 2: Shrimp Mallow Series.
[2:12] Speaker 1: Now look on the side. Before you open it up,
[2:14] Speaker 1: All of the little ones.
[2:16] Speaker 2: Are listed there. Oh, so it's a series.
[2:18] Speaker 1: It's a blind box. So you don't know what's in there?
[2:21] Speaker 1: Not at all.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Oh, okay. And this is what you love about these,
[2:25] Speaker 2: isn't it? Is it a surprise?
[2:27] Speaker 1: I love the fact that they're a surprise. I also
[2:30] Speaker 1: love that they're really quirky. To have something hanging over
[2:33] Speaker 1: your laptop or your cup or whatever, I think is
[2:35] Speaker 1: really fun. But it just makes me so happy. I
[2:38] Speaker 1: actually want to take you to Japan so we can
[2:42] Speaker 1: go to the Sunny Angels concert. And just do like
[2:44] Speaker 1: this blind boxing and watch you cringe. Well done.
[2:47] Speaker 2: Thank you. Is this what you do?
[2:49] Speaker 1: Now, which one did you want? Did you see the side?
[2:52] Speaker 1: Was there one that you wanted?
[2:53] Speaker 3: Look, if I'm actually really honest, Chrissie, my eyesight isn't
[2:56] Speaker 3: great and it's pretty difficult.
[2:59] Speaker 2: All right.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Let me choose for you because I've only got 10 minutes.
[3:02] Speaker 3: Okay.
[3:02] Speaker 1: Here's a bonus episode. We will be here for hours.
[3:05] Speaker 1: I think I want for you.
[3:07] Speaker 3: Do you want for me?
[3:07] Speaker 1: Let me just get my glasses happening. The prawn meow.
[3:11] Speaker 2: A prawn meow?
[3:12] Speaker 1: A prawn meow is what I think you deserve.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Are you ready?
[3:15] Speaker 3: Ready, set.
[3:17] Speaker 1: Oh, lovely clean tear. I know.
[3:18] Speaker 2: See, I'm pretty good at unboxing.
[3:20] Speaker 3: I don't do them very often, but I feel like
[3:22] Speaker 3: I would excel at unboxing.
[3:23] Speaker 1: Would you?
[3:24] Speaker 3: Okay.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Maybe I need to get into unboxing content.
[3:26] Speaker 1: Well, it means spending money, babes. You're not that forthcoming.
[3:28] Speaker 2: I'm not very good at spending. I'm a bit of
[3:30] Speaker 2: a tight ass.
[3:32] Speaker 1: And I love you for it.
[3:32] Speaker 2: I don't want to be.
[3:33] Speaker 1: So I will now be the provider.
[3:35] Speaker 2: Of the fun things. Thank you.
[3:37] Speaker 3: Okay, ready? Go. Go.
[3:39] Speaker 1: Oh, my God, you got it. You did. So you
[3:43] Speaker 1: got your very first blind box, the exact one.
[3:47] Speaker 2: That you want me to get.
[3:47] Speaker 1: I wanted you to get. I'm so tinny at these.
[3:50] Speaker 2: Oh, I love this. So can I pull that off?
[3:52] Speaker 1: Pull the plastic off.
[3:53] Speaker 3: Yep.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Don't pull it off now, but when you do, we'll
[3:55] Speaker 1: put it back on. I just did, sorry. And then
[3:56] Speaker 1: you'll attach it to the top of your.
[3:57] Speaker 2: Oh, it's sticky.
[3:58] Speaker 1: Yes.
[3:59] Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't realise. I'm sorry. I thought it was
[4:01] Speaker 2: like a magnet or something. No, no, it's sticky stick.
[4:02] Speaker 2: I've got to get that back on.
[4:04] Speaker 1: How cute is that? Are you obsessed now? Do you
[4:08] Speaker 1: want them all?
[4:09] Speaker 2: No.
[4:10] Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
[4:11] Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
[4:11] Speaker 1: Well, I'm happy that we got that one for you.
[4:13] Speaker 2: I do love it.
[4:14] Speaker 3: And I love them on your laptop.
[4:15] Speaker 2: I think they're super cute on your laptop.
[4:18] Speaker 1: There you go.
[4:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're super cute for you.
[4:20] Speaker 1: For me. I love them. So these are something that
[4:24] Speaker 1: are taking over. I'm telling you, everybody loves them. Blind boxes.
[4:28] Speaker 2: I just don't get it.
[4:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't think you need to get it made.
[4:32] Speaker 1: It's all about the fun, opening something that you have
[4:35] Speaker 1: no idea what's in it.
[4:35] Speaker 2: Maybe I'm too medicated.
[4:37] Speaker 3: Maybe.
[4:37] Speaker 1: Oh, no.
[4:38] Speaker 2: Maybe I'm too medicated.
[4:40] Speaker 3: No. And it's taken the joy out of things for me.
[4:42] Speaker 1: No, but how cute is it? Look at its little face.
[4:44] Speaker 1: It's so cute. It's meaningless. It's expensive, but it makes
[4:49] Speaker 1: me so happy.
[4:50] Speaker 3: And I'm really happy that it makes you so happy.
[4:53] Speaker 1: But you're not going to go out and buy one,
[4:54] Speaker 1: are you?
[4:55] Speaker 2: I'm not going to buy one.
[4:55] Speaker 3: Yeah, no.
[4:56] Speaker 2: Okay.
[4:57] Speaker 3: Anyway.
[4:58] Speaker 2: Soz. That's all right. I still love you.
[5:00] Speaker 1: Of course you do, and I want that on your computer. Thanks.
[5:02] Speaker 3: You walk in with Chrissy in Pop Mart, and you
[5:05] Speaker 3: just go, oh.
[5:06] Speaker 2: You're like, you can just see your face lights up.
[5:08] Speaker 2: But see, for me, I just.
[5:10] Speaker 1: Let me go and get them. I've got two here. Okay,
[5:12] Speaker 1: go get them. I've got them attached to the bag.
[5:15] Speaker 2: I actually just find it a bit childish. But I
[5:21] Speaker 2: cannot see it. I want to see it, but I
[5:23] Speaker 2: just can't.
[5:24] Speaker 1: They're my little pot mark ones.
[5:26] Speaker 2: Okay, show me.
[5:28] Speaker 3: And this is why I like them because this is
[5:30] Speaker 3: actually really cute. Yeah, see, I think they're so cute.
[5:34] Speaker 1: Look at that one with its little pot pot and
[5:36] Speaker 1: its little things.
[5:37] Speaker 2: It is really cute.
[5:38] Speaker 1: Very cute. And that's my computer.
[5:39] Speaker 2: I love that. But see, do you know what I see?
[5:42] Speaker 2: That's just going to get in the road.
[5:43] Speaker 1: Now look at these. That's my little pot pot. Isn't
[5:47] Speaker 1: he gorgeous? Because I love the series. I absolutely froth
[5:52] Speaker 1: for the series of Twinkle Twinkle. That's a blind box.
[5:56] Speaker 1: I'm sensing a lot of.
[5:58] Speaker 2: I'm not judging.
[5:59] Speaker 1: Judging.
[5:59] Speaker 2: But I just, I don't get it. I just don't
[6:02] Speaker 2: get it.
[6:03] Speaker 1: Look at the face on that little one.
[6:04] Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
[6:05] Speaker 2: I don't get it.
[6:06] Speaker 1: It's just fabulous.
[6:06] Speaker 2: I don't get it.
[6:07] Speaker 1: I just love it.
[6:07] Speaker 2: It just brings me so much joy.
[6:08] Speaker 3: You see, I could see myself buying these for my grandbabies.
[6:12] Speaker 1: Oh, don't even get me started on that. Do you
[6:14] Speaker 1: know how many times I go into Pop Mart and
[6:17] Speaker 1: they'll say, oh, is this for your grandchild?
[6:19] Speaker 2: Oh, do they?
[6:20] Speaker 1: No, mate, it's for me.
[6:21] Speaker 2: All right. I love it.
[6:21] Speaker 1: Take my money and shut up.
[6:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that for you.
[6:24] Speaker 1: Just don't judge.
[6:25] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[6:26] Speaker 1: You want to put it up to your face and
[6:28] Speaker 1: just go, oh, you're so cute?
[6:29] Speaker 3: No.
[6:30] Speaker 1: But it's got like beads in it. It's quite heavy.
[6:32] Speaker 1: It's nice little tactile.
[6:33] Speaker 2: I don't care. I love it for you, but for me,
[6:36] Speaker 2: I don't.
[6:37] Speaker 1: Jess, isn't that cute? Is it like a labubu? Yes,
[6:41] Speaker 1: but this is the bird range. And I'm absolutely obsessed
[6:44] Speaker 1: with my Hirono's series. So, yes, there you go.
[6:48] Speaker 2: I love it for you.
[6:49] Speaker 1: All right, well, I've picked up the vibe in the
[6:51] Speaker 1: room that you're all judging me. And I'm just going
[6:54] Speaker 1: to sit here now and just be.
[6:56] Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm not judging you.
[6:59] Speaker 2: I just don't get it.
[7:01] Speaker 1: Okay.
[7:01] Speaker 2: But I love that you are so enthusiastic.
[7:03] Speaker 1: I love them.
[7:04] Speaker 2: And it makes you so happy. I love that for you.
[7:06] Speaker 2: It wouldn't do it for me.
[7:07] Speaker 1: No, Ricardo doesn't even get it either.
[7:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know what?
[7:10] Speaker 3: I've got things that I'm sure that I love.
[7:15] Speaker 1: Some people collect Royal Dalton. I collect my Sunny Angels
[7:20] Speaker 1: and my beautiful Harono.
[7:21] Speaker 3: I guarantee you, you would not get as excited about
[7:25] Speaker 3: walking around a supermarket as I do.
[7:27] Speaker 1: I actually don't mind walking around a supermarket. Oh, really?
[7:30] Speaker 3: I do.
[7:30] Speaker 1: I find that quite satisfying.
[7:32] Speaker 2: I love a supermarket.
[7:33] Speaker 3: And it's one of the things I love to do
[7:35] Speaker 3: when I go on holidays.
[7:36] Speaker 2: I love going to a supermarket.
[7:38] Speaker 1: Can I tell you a funny story? Charlie and I
[7:40] Speaker 1: went to Chicago. We went to the States.
[7:42] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[7:43] Speaker 1: Because every other year I'd go, pretty much every year.
[7:45] Speaker 1: And we don't do, like, museums and things like that.
[7:49] Speaker 1: We love pop culture. So Charlie and I go to Walmart.
[7:53] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. We love Walmart.
[7:55] Speaker 1: We watch the people. We go up and down the
[7:57] Speaker 1: aisles because they have the supermarket in Walmart and the
[8:00] Speaker 1: clothes and the chemist. It's all there. It's like a
[8:02] Speaker 1: big football ground. And we literally start at the very
[8:05] Speaker 1: front and we just go row by row by row.
[8:08] Speaker 1: And then we judge the people that are going in
[8:10] Speaker 1: and what they're wearing. And we think it's absolutely fantastic.
[8:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that.
[8:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, so I get it.
