[0:39] Speaker 1: pre recorded to start today's Bible answer Man broadcast. Here's
[0:44] Speaker 1: your host, Hank Cantagraph.
[0:46] Speaker 2: Thank you hear much, Randy. Before we go to our callers,
[0:48] Speaker 2: I want to talk to John Hemmett about an article
[0:51] Speaker 2: that he wrote for the Christian Research Journal. Some today
[0:55] Speaker 2: suggest that we may well move from human to posthuman
[1:00] Speaker 2: via human technology rather than through resurrection realities. In this view,
[1:07] Speaker 2: we are free agents capable of controlling our own destinies.
[1:14] Speaker 2: This is, in essence, a virulent transhumanist movement addicted to
[1:21] Speaker 2: the power of technology, and John has written a terrific
[1:26] Speaker 2: article in the Christian Research Journal that deals with this
[1:29] Speaker 2: very subject. It's titled a Christian View of Human Nature
[1:33] Speaker 2: Between Radical Freedom and Total Determinism. John is a pastor,
[1:41] Speaker 2: missionary professor. He has authored a number of books and articles,
[1:47] Speaker 2: including Human Nature and a Theology for the Church, and
[1:52] Speaker 2: he joins me now in the Bible answer Man broadcast.
[1:54] Speaker 2: Good to have you on the broadcast, John, Good to
[1:56] Speaker 2: be here. Your article is interesting in that I suppose
[2:01] Speaker 2: a lot of people are not familiar with the transhumanist movement,
[2:06] Speaker 2: a movement moving from human to post human human technology,
[2:12] Speaker 2: when in Christian realities the one thing we say as
[2:16] Speaker 2: fallen human beings that might be worse than death, we're
[2:19] Speaker 2: talking about overcoming death through resurrection. Talk about the transhumanist
[2:23] Speaker 2: movement and this idea that it posits of radical human freedom.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Well, I think they have totally dropped in any hope
[2:31] Speaker 3: of resurrection, Like you were just talking about the resurrection
[2:34] Speaker 3: of the body. And if there is no hope of resurrection,
[2:37] Speaker 3: if all we have is this life here and now
[2:40] Speaker 3: for forty fifty seventy eighty years, that seemed to them
[2:44] Speaker 3: altogether too short. And they want the power to say
[2:48] Speaker 3: we don't have to die. We can overcome that, not
[2:51] Speaker 3: by resurrection but by technology.
[2:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, so technology becomes a savior. On the other hand,
[2:57] Speaker 2: you are worried about this ocean of genetic determinism that
[3:02] Speaker 2: everything that we are hope to be is determined by
[3:06] Speaker 2: brain chemistry and genetics, and therefore we're really not free
[3:10] Speaker 2: at all. We are determined by our genetics.
[3:16] Speaker 3: It seem to be a very strong strand, at least
[3:19] Speaker 3: in North American culture. The transhumanism sounds like to most
[3:23] Speaker 3: of us, like science fiction, but terminism seems to me
[3:26] Speaker 3: much more the coming wave, much more explanatory of different
[3:31] Speaker 3: things that we see in people's lives, and I wanted
[3:33] Speaker 3: to counter that especially.
[3:34] Speaker 2: So you have, on the one hand, genetic determinism. On
[3:38] Speaker 2: the other hand, you have this radical freedom movement. How
[3:42] Speaker 2: does Christianity mediate those two movements.
[3:46] Speaker 3: Well, the acknowledges on the one hand that God has
[3:48] Speaker 3: created us with a degree of moral freedom and responsibility.
[3:52] Speaker 3: So we are creatures that will be judged by Him
[3:55] Speaker 3: one day for the choices that we make, and so
[3:57] Speaker 3: we cannot opt for tell determinism. God sees us as
[4:02] Speaker 3: responsible creatures. On the other hand, I think we can
[4:05] Speaker 3: acknowledge that God has also made us able to be
[4:08] Speaker 3: influenced by a variety of factors, our families, our genetic inheritance,
[4:14] Speaker 3: a culture, those around us. But those influences never rise
[4:17] Speaker 3: to the level of determinism. So we're in the middle
[4:20] Speaker 3: acknowledging both genuine freedom and limited influences of those things
[4:26] Speaker 3: around us.
[4:27] Speaker 2: Talk about how our Lord's words factor into all of
[4:31] Speaker 2: this when he says, from everyone who has been given much,
[4:36] Speaker 2: much will be demanded, and from the one who has
[4:40] Speaker 2: been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
[4:44] Speaker 3: I think this is a really important thing to recognize,
[4:46] Speaker 3: especially in dealing with other friends around us, believers and
[4:51] Speaker 3: non believers as well. Some folks have a wonderful background,
[4:55] Speaker 3: They have good parents, good education, strong church back and
[5:01] Speaker 3: for them to not grow and prosper and be fruitful
[5:05] Speaker 3: would be a real failure. For others who come from
[5:08] Speaker 3: a very difficult background, with very much opposition from their
[5:12] Speaker 3: family and others, for them to hold their own is
[5:15] Speaker 3: really doing quite well.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Explain to our audience why it is significant to say
[5:24] Speaker 2: that our choices do matter. Yes, we are influenced by
[5:29] Speaker 2: the factors that you mentioned, but we are not determined.
[5:33] Speaker 3: Well, if we were determined by those factors on what
[5:36] Speaker 3: basis then could we ever be judged by God? And
[5:40] Speaker 3: yet it's clear in scripture that we will all face
[5:42] Speaker 3: the judgment for the deeds done in the body. So
[5:46] Speaker 3: whatever how much influence there is of family and culture
[5:49] Speaker 3: and genetics, they may narrow the choices you have, but
[5:53] Speaker 3: they don't eliminate the choices that you have.
[5:55] Speaker 2: So we have to preserve human culpability. We have to
[6:00] Speaker 2: preserve the sovereignty of God, and we also have to
[6:04] Speaker 2: preserve the justice of God.
[6:06] Speaker 3: It would seem yeah, if we have no real choices,
[6:09] Speaker 3: how can God.
[6:10] Speaker 2: Justly Joseph And again the article in the Christian Research
[6:14] Speaker 2: Journal is available to all. It is an important issue,
[6:19] Speaker 2: and again these factors are being discussed for us to
[6:24] Speaker 2: be aware of the difference between radical human freedom and
[6:31] Speaker 2: then on the other hand, the kind of determinism that
[6:35] Speaker 2: oftentimes has couched either in genetic terms or theological terms.
[6:40] Speaker 2: If there isn't a proper communication, then it's hard to
[6:45] Speaker 2: reach someone. And that's why it's important to understand these
[6:47] Speaker 2: factors exactly. And the Christian Research Journal Between Radical Freedom
[6:52] Speaker 2: and total determinism, a Christian View of Human Nature is
[6:56] Speaker 2: available to you or online at equipped dot org. Appreciate
[7:00] Speaker 2: contribution to the journal and to the Bible answer Man Broadcast.
[7:03] Speaker 3: Thanks for having me on.
[7:04] Speaker 2: You got it, John. Thank you, and we want to
[7:06] Speaker 2: go right to our callers. A lot of you hanging on.
[7:08] Speaker 2: First up is Raymond listening in Providence, Rhode Island.
[7:12] Speaker 4: Hi, Raymond, Hi, and thank you very much. I appreciate
[7:15] Speaker 4: your help.
[7:16] Speaker 2: You got it.
[7:17] Speaker 4: I have a friend who is not a Jehovah's witness
[7:20] Speaker 4: or it is not a Seventh day Adventist, but he's
[7:24] Speaker 4: an avid reader and he has read two thousand pages
[7:31] Speaker 4: from a fellow by the name of E. W. Bullinger.
[7:35] Speaker 4: And my friend has become involved in annihilationism, and so
[7:39] Speaker 4: sleep and I don't know what to do. I don't
[7:43] Speaker 4: think I could handle two thousand pages of scriptural references.
[7:50] Speaker 4: I don't think I'm up to that. I need some help.
[7:54] Speaker 2: Well, I think you can deal with the scriptural references.
[7:56] Speaker 2: I think that you probably can't deal with that many
[7:59] Speaker 2: pages of Bullinger. The reality is that if you look
[8:04] Speaker 2: at the Bible, the Bible is very very clear that
[8:07] Speaker 2: the soul continues to exist after the death of the body.
[8:13] Speaker 2: In other words, the soul continues to have conscious awareness.
[8:19] Speaker 2: And I suppose the most graphic illustration of that is
[8:22] Speaker 2: the story that Jesus told about a rich man and
[8:26] Speaker 2: a beggar named Lazarus. They both die, and they both
[8:29] Speaker 2: end up with conscious existence and eternity apart from the body.
[8:37] Speaker 2: That presupposes that the soul can continue to function and
[8:40] Speaker 2: exist apart from the body, which is precisely what a
[8:43] Speaker 2: Christian world view presupposes and precisely what Jesus Christ is
[8:46] Speaker 2: communicating when he talks about Lazarus being in Blessed Abraham's
[8:51] Speaker 2: bosom and the rich man being in torment in Hades.
[8:55] Speaker 2: So the Bible is very clear that we have conscious
[9:00] Speaker 2: existence after death. Now, I wouldn't want to make my
[9:05] Speaker 2: point based on one passage, albeit a very strong passage
[9:10] Speaker 2: given by Jesus Christ himself. The Holy Scripture makes the
[9:14] Speaker 2: same point. Now, Jesus tells this thief on the cross today,
[9:18] Speaker 2: you will be with me in Paradise. Stephen says, Lord
[9:21] Speaker 2: Jesus received my spirit. Moses appears after death on the
[9:27] Speaker 2: Mount of Transfiguration with Elijah. Paul talks about how he would,
[9:34] Speaker 2: in a perfect world rather depart and be with Christ
[9:39] Speaker 2: because he knows that's better. That does not in any
[9:42] Speaker 2: way indicate that he's going to be dead like a dog,
[9:45] Speaker 2: not have any kind of conscious existence. It indicates that
[9:49] Speaker 2: he will be in the presence of God and enjoy
[9:53] Speaker 2: that presence of God, which is precisely what my dad
[9:56] Speaker 2: is doing right now, who died in nineteen ninety seven.
[9:58] Speaker 2: He's enjoying the presence of God and looking forward as
[10:01] Speaker 2: we all are, to the time that Jesus Christ returns,
[10:04] Speaker 2: and then he will experience bodily resurrection, the soul returning
[10:08] Speaker 2: to the body. So the idea of annihilationism might sound good,
[10:14] Speaker 2: but at the end of the day, God does not
[10:18] Speaker 2: rub out the crowning jewels of his creation. What he
[10:22] Speaker 2: does is continue to sustain them in existence, even if
[10:27] Speaker 2: they choose to live apart from Him for all eternity,
[10:30] Speaker 2: which is what hell is. So what you have is
[10:35] Speaker 2: a very definitive corpus of versus in scripture that point
[10:42] Speaker 2: to the fact that we don't experience annihilation, we don't
[10:47] Speaker 2: experience soul sleep. What we do experience is conscious awareness
[10:54] Speaker 2: after death and what we look forward to. And that
[10:57] Speaker 2: is the very thing that allowed the earlys to face
[11:01] Speaker 2: the tyrants brandish steel, the lanscore remain the fires of
[11:03] Speaker 2: a thousand death. They knew that like their Lord, they
[11:06] Speaker 2: would rise immortal, imperishable, incorruptibly right back with more of
[11:11] Speaker 2: your questions. Please don't touch that dial.

[15:09] Speaker 2: Thank you Indy, and we'll get right back to our
[15:11] Speaker 2: phone callers. Jasmine is up next in Long Beach, California.
[15:15] Speaker 5: Hi Jasmine, Hi, Hi, Hi, Hank. I was wondering what
[15:20] Speaker 5: is wrong with the Word of faith ministries. I made
[15:24] Speaker 5: a vow of faith a long time ago for one
[15:27] Speaker 5: hundred dollars through Robert Tilton, and I never paid it.
[15:31] Speaker 5: I had paid I had made other vows before and
[15:35] Speaker 5: paid them. And then finally I didn't pay I felt
[15:39] Speaker 5: like things were going wrong for me. I don't know
[15:43] Speaker 5: what Do you know what's wrong with the Word of
[15:46] Speaker 5: faith ministry?
[15:48] Speaker 2: Well do I? Ever? And I don't even know where
[15:49] Speaker 2: to start. Be honest with you, I actually wrote a
[15:52] Speaker 2: book about this, called Christianity Crisis twenty first century. But
[15:57] Speaker 2: this is a modern crisis in Christianity, and it's deepening
[16:01] Speaker 2: as an ever increasing number of twenty first century prosperity preachers,
[16:05] Speaker 2: ranging from Joyce Meyer to TD Jakes to Robert Tilton
[16:10] Speaker 2: and many others, are trying to convince their devotee that
[16:14] Speaker 2: what happens in your life is a result of the
[16:18] Speaker 2: words you speak. If you're healthy and prosperous, words created
[16:24] Speaker 2: your reality. Conversely, if your baby dies or your spouse
[16:28] Speaker 2: contracts cancer, you are the prime suspect. In fact, according
[16:34] Speaker 2: to one of America's most popular prosperity preachers today, Joel
[16:37] Speaker 2: ostein the moment you speak something out, you give birth
[16:41] Speaker 2: to it. This is a spiritual principle, he says, and
[16:44] Speaker 2: it works whether what you were saying is good or bad,
[16:48] Speaker 2: positive or negative. So your words create your reality and
[16:54] Speaker 2: when you make a vow of faith, you are cementing
[17:00] Speaker 2: the intent of your words by giving to the prosperity preacher,
[17:05] Speaker 2: and so they are manipulating you with a give to
[17:09] Speaker 2: get scheme, the idea being that if you give a
[17:13] Speaker 2: certain amount of money, God is going to multiply what
[17:16] Speaker 2: you gave. So now you're not giving because you want
[17:21] Speaker 2: to extend His kingdom. You are giving for a purely
[17:24] Speaker 2: selfish motive. TD Jakes is really upfront about this, saying
[17:29] Speaker 2: that if you only got back what you gave, you
[17:32] Speaker 2: just break even. So what's the point of giving. Well,
[17:34] Speaker 2: the point of giving is to extend His kingdom, not
[17:37] Speaker 2: by might nor by power, but by His spirit. So
[17:40] Speaker 2: they have a completely wrong view wealth of words of
[17:47] Speaker 2: the world in which we live. It is an unbiblical, uncritical,
[17:54] Speaker 2: dangerous movement that is parasitic. In other words, it's feeding
[17:59] Speaker 2: on true Christianity is a parasite. It looks and feels
[18:04] Speaker 2: like it might be real, but in the end it
[18:06] Speaker 2: will always leave you empty. I'm so happy that you
[18:11] Speaker 2: did not fulfill the vow to Robert Tilton, because you
[18:15] Speaker 2: would have been given to one of the most false
[18:18] Speaker 2: of all false prosperity preachers, that's ever damaged the landscape
[18:23] Speaker 2: of Christianity.
[18:25] Speaker 5: Long glad Well, I heard you on the radio saying
[18:29] Speaker 5: not to give, but I didn't understand why.
[18:33] Speaker 2: Well, I think one of the things that would be
[18:35] Speaker 2: very helpful to you is my book Christianity Crisis twenty
[18:39] Speaker 2: first Century, and it is available. Okay, okay, well you
[18:43] Speaker 2: hang on, we'll tell you how to do it. Okay,
[18:46] Speaker 2: thank you, Jasmine. And of course, just as McDonald's has
[18:49] Speaker 2: popularized fast food, Robert Tilton's ministry propagates this fast faith,
[18:56] Speaker 2: boil it down to its irreducible minimum. And his message simple,
[19:00] Speaker 2: God wants you to flourish financially and physically, but you
[19:03] Speaker 2: need faith. To prove your faith. You need to make
[19:06] Speaker 2: a vow of faith, and all the vows should be
[19:09] Speaker 2: sent in care of Brother Bob. And he says that
[19:15] Speaker 2: he prays over those vows of faith that you make
[19:19] Speaker 2: over the checks you send him. And when he was
[19:23] Speaker 2: called in the carpet for this by people that did
[19:25] Speaker 2: investigative journalism, he said that those praier requests forms have
[19:31] Speaker 2: ink on them and all kinds of chemicals. And I
[19:33] Speaker 2: laid on top of those prayer requests so much that
[19:36] Speaker 2: the chemicals actually got into my bloodstream and began to
[19:39] Speaker 2: swell my capillaries. It got into my immune system, and
[19:43] Speaker 2: I had two small strokes in my brain that brought
[19:47] Speaker 2: about some numbness in my body. And as a result,
[19:50] Speaker 2: Tilton said he had to undergo plastic surgery to remove
[19:53] Speaker 2: the bags from under his eyes. If you believe this guy,
[19:58] Speaker 2: you're on a downward spiral. And I think that rather
[20:00] Speaker 2: than listening to Robert Tilton, it would be a good
[20:04] Speaker 2: thing for you to get into the words of God,
[20:06] Speaker 2: to get into the Bible. And this is a warning
[20:08] Speaker 2: to everyone. If you're not familiar with the counterfeits, you're
[20:11] Speaker 2: going to fall for them the skin of the true
[20:13] Speaker 2: stuff with a great big lie. You give for the
[20:15] Speaker 2: wrong reasons. You give to get rather than give to
[20:18] Speaker 2: extend his kingdom. It's an easy way to raise money,
[20:21] Speaker 2: by the way, to say, if you give one hundred
[20:23] Speaker 2: dollars of the Gristian Research Institute, you'll get ten thousand
[20:26] Speaker 2: dollars back from God. But that's not the way it works,
[20:30] Speaker 2: and that's not our motivation for giving. We give because
[20:35] Speaker 2: we are demonstrating that the arm of God is always trustworthy.
[20:40] Speaker 2: The arm of flesh is weak. We give because we
[20:44] Speaker 2: want to extend His kingdom. We want to touch people
[20:48] Speaker 2: with the gospel. We want to reach the down trodden,
[20:53] Speaker 2: in the broken hearted. The motivation to give and the
[20:58] Speaker 2: Word of faith movement is person decisely standing on its head.
[21:02] Speaker 2: I want to go back to the phone line stock
[21:03] Speaker 2: to John listening in Silva, North Carolina.
[21:06] Speaker 6: High Hello, Harry, you Hank good John. I was calling
[21:10] Speaker 6: in and about Jehovah's witness. I had several that came
[21:13] Speaker 6: to visit me numerous times over and over, and uh,
[21:18] Speaker 6: we're very convinced that missed. Some of our interpretations of
[21:23] Speaker 6: the Bible are incorrect. One in particularly was John where
[21:26] Speaker 6: it said the word was God, and they have in
[21:29] Speaker 6: their Bible the word was a God. And uh, you
[21:33] Speaker 6: know when we were battering this back and forth, uh,
[21:37] Speaker 6: they told me that it was a misinterpretation of you know,
[21:40] Speaker 6: the Christians. And uh so I told them give me
[21:44] Speaker 6: a week. A week later, I had done some research
[21:47] Speaker 6: and I had used starting with the people that they
[21:51] Speaker 6: used to interpret you know that they quoted. I went
[21:54] Speaker 6: to those same people and pulled up you know what
[21:57] Speaker 6: how they interpreted John and one of them agreed with
[22:02] Speaker 6: Jehovah's waitness. One of them said that there were four interpretations,
[22:07] Speaker 6: you know, the four possible interpretations. That one was one
[22:11] Speaker 6: of the weakest. But when I told them this, they
[22:14] Speaker 6: just sat and looked at me. You know, they didn't
[22:16] Speaker 6: call me in ornything. They just stared at me.
[22:18] Speaker 2: You know, you've discovered something, John, What you've discovered is
[22:21] Speaker 2: that they run on a little ball field, and if
[22:24] Speaker 2: you take them outside the ball field, they're lost. They
[22:27] Speaker 2: do give you a blank stare because they really have
[22:31] Speaker 2: not learned to read the Bible for all it's worth.
[22:35] Speaker 2: What they've learned is the sales pitch of the Watchtower organization,
[22:41] Speaker 2: which always seems to center on John chapter one Colossians
[22:46] Speaker 2: chapter one, where they, by the way, insert the word
[22:49] Speaker 2: other four times, completely without warrant, so that Jesus Christ
[22:55] Speaker 2: becomes a junior partner in the creation of all other
[23:00] Speaker 2: things after he himself is created by God. But that's
[23:03] Speaker 2: not what the text tells us. And there's no warrant
[23:05] Speaker 2: for tampering with the text. And I think that you've
[23:08] Speaker 2: done a very good job the translation of the Bible
[23:11] Speaker 2: that they use, the New World Translation is a very
[23:15] Speaker 2: weak translation, and the Watchtower translators themselves fall into the
[23:21] Speaker 2: pagan practice of translating the Greek word curios as lord
[23:27] Speaker 2: evening cases where it specifically refers to the Father, all
[23:31] Speaker 2: the while castigating other Christians for their use. And so
[23:37] Speaker 2: they start with a flawed premise. They build on it.
[23:41] Speaker 2: But it's a house of cards, and you've found out
[23:43] Speaker 2: that by going a little deeper, they don't know what
[23:46] Speaker 2: to say. Again, there are witnesses that are open because
[23:51] Speaker 2: they know in their heart that they're not satisfied. That
[23:55] Speaker 2: gaping hole is still there that only Jesus Christ can fill.
[23:59] Speaker 2: Not the Jesus Christ to the Watchtower organization, but that
[24:01] Speaker 2: Jesus Christ who spoke and the universe left into existence.
[24:05] Speaker 6: Thank you so much. I really appreciate to you.
[24:07] Speaker 2: You got it. Thank you so much. There's a lot
[24:11] Speaker 2: that could be said as far as the Jehovah's witness
[24:16] Speaker 2: view of the Bible, but oftentimes it is skewed because
[24:19] Speaker 2: they have unnecessarily inserted something into their translation of the
[24:26] Speaker 2: Bible that makes Jesus Christ not God but a God.
[24:30] Speaker 2: The truth of the matter is, in the beginning, was
[24:32] Speaker 2: the word. The word was with God, and the Word
[24:35] Speaker 2: was not a God, but the Word was God. They
[24:39] Speaker 2: teach that because the second occurrence of theos does not
[24:43] Speaker 2: have the definite article, it must mean that Jesus is
[24:47] Speaker 2: a lesser God. Again, however, this is repudiated by scripture.
[24:52] Speaker 2: There's no definite article in John one six. In fact,
[24:57] Speaker 2: in verse six, the text tells us there was a
[24:59] Speaker 2: man who was sent not from a God, but from God.
[25:02] Speaker 2: His name was John. And he came as a witness
[25:06] Speaker 2: to testify concerning that light, so that through him all
[25:10] Speaker 2: men might believe. He himself was not the light. He
[25:14] Speaker 2: came only as a witness to the light, speaking of
[25:16] Speaker 2: John the Baptist, the true light that gives light to
[25:19] Speaker 2: every man. And of course we recognize, as you read
[25:23] Speaker 2: on this passage, that the Word became flesh. He made
[25:27] Speaker 2: his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the
[25:30] Speaker 2: glory of the one and only who came from the Father,
[25:34] Speaker 2: full of grace and truth. So in the beginning was
[25:37] Speaker 2: the Word. The Word was with God. The Word was God.
[25:42] Speaker 2: He was with God in the beginning. He was not
[25:45] Speaker 2: created by God. He didn't become a junior creator in
[25:49] Speaker 2: the process of creating other things. He was the one
[25:52] Speaker 2: who spoke in the universe, leapt into existence. He was
[25:56] Speaker 2: before all things, and in him all things school together.
