On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (04/07/26), Hank continues to highlight the days of Holy Week. On Holy Tuesday, we commemorate the Parable of the Ten Virgins as found in Matthew chapter 25. In this parable—this extended simile with extraordinarily sharp teeth—the coming of Christ is likened to the coming of the bridegroom to the home of his bride during the sacramental ritual of marriage. In the narrative of the parable, there are ten virgins—five wise and five foolish. The five wise virgins are illustrative of those who practice almsgiving and mercy. The five foolish represent those who selfishly squander God’s provisions upon themselves. In the end, the bridegroom arrives, and the five who were prepared went in with him to the eternal wedding banquet. And then, says Jesus, “the door was shut.” To the five foolish virgins who belatedly asked for the door to be opened, the bridegroom replied, “I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.” Hank also answers the following question: My son struggles with knowing that he’s saved. He said that he’s prayed and prayed but doesn’t feel like he hears from God. What can I say to him? Carol - Nashville, TN (19:41)

[1:16] Speaker 2: the Eastern Church, just as last week for the Western Church,
[1:21] Speaker 2: Holy Tuesday is in view, and as with Holy Monday,
[1:28] Speaker 2: Holy Tuesday is celebrated with laser focus on the end
[1:34] Speaker 2: of time, and so time and time again, we're reminded
[1:40] Speaker 2: of the eschatological meaning of passover of Pasca, Pasca meaning
[1:49] Speaker 2: passover or passage, the feast of Passover being for the
[1:54] Speaker 2: Jews the annual commemoration of their whole history is one
[2:00] Speaker 2: of salvation, and of course Christ is that fulfillment of Pasca.
[2:08] Speaker 2: He is the passover Lamb who takes away the sin
[2:13] Speaker 2: of the world. As each week in preparation for partaking
[2:19] Speaker 2: of the mystical Supper, we're reminded of our eschatological entrance
[2:25] Speaker 2: into the splendor of the Saints. If I dare to
[2:30] Speaker 2: enter into the bridal chamber, my clothing will accuse me
[2:35] Speaker 2: since it's not a wedding garment, and being bound up,
[2:40] Speaker 2: I shall be cast out by the angels. In your love, Lord,
[2:46] Speaker 2: cleanse my soul and save me. At matins at daybreak,
[2:53] Speaker 2: we're reminded of blind and hypocritical religious leaders who give
[2:59] Speaker 2: a ten of their spices, of their mint and dill
[3:03] Speaker 2: and cumin, but they neglect the more important matters of
[3:08] Speaker 2: the law, justice, mercy, faithfulness. Those who emulate the practices
[3:15] Speaker 2: of such blind guides do not anticipate the hour of
[3:21] Speaker 2: their master's return, and so central to this eschatological message,
[3:29] Speaker 2: the message of Holy Tuesday is the parable of the
[3:33] Speaker 2: ten virgins. And thus we're reminded to watch, for we
[3:39] Speaker 2: know neither the day nor the hour wherein which the
[3:44] Speaker 2: sun of man will return. In the parable this extended
[3:50] Speaker 2: simbily with extraordinary sharp teeth, the coming of Christ is
[3:55] Speaker 2: likened to the coming well, the coming of the bridegroom,
[4:00] Speaker 2: if the home of his bride during the sacramental ritual
[4:03] Speaker 2: of marriage. In the narrative, there are ten virgins, five
[4:10] Speaker 2: of them wise and five of them exceedingly foolish, five
[4:15] Speaker 2: with oil for their lamps, and five without. The five
[4:21] Speaker 2: wise virgins are illustrative of those who practice almsgiving and mercy.
[4:29] Speaker 2: The foolish will they represent those who selfishly squander God's
[4:34] Speaker 2: provision upon themselves. And so the cry at midnight singles
[4:41] Speaker 2: the second coming of Christ, when some will rise to
[4:46] Speaker 2: live and some will rise to be eternally condemned. And thus,
[4:52] Speaker 2: in anticipation we think, behold, the bridegroom comes at midnight.
[4:57] Speaker 2: Blessed is the servant whom he shall find watching and
[5:02] Speaker 2: the wise words of John Chrysostom. Christ likens the gift
[5:06] Speaker 2: of virginity, the purity of holiness to a lamp, and
[5:13] Speaker 2: he likens philanthropy, kind heartedness, help of the poor to oil.
[5:19] Speaker 2: Oil and holy scripture invariably serves as an image of
[5:23] Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit. And in this parable, the burning oil
[5:28] Speaker 2: signifies those who are filled with the Holy Spirit. And thus,
[5:33] Speaker 2: faithful followers of the bridegroom, they're saved, They're being saved,
[5:40] Speaker 2: they will be saved for they wantch in faithfulness for
[5:44] Speaker 2: the coming of their Lord. Through baptism, they've been enlightened.
[5:49] Speaker 2: Through chrismation, they have been empowered, and through the Eucharist
[5:54] Speaker 2: they have been energized. As with an earthen pot in
[6:00] Speaker 2: a kiln, in the words of Saint Gregory Palamus, when
[6:05] Speaker 2: when a pod is in a kiln, it shares the
[6:08] Speaker 2: very life of the fire, taking on its hot and
[6:12] Speaker 2: burning qualities, becoming capable of transferring that very energy to
[6:18] Speaker 2: something else. And so through adoption we become by grace
[6:25] Speaker 2: what the Son of God is by nature. We become
[6:29] Speaker 2: children of God, God's by grace, God's, as Peter puts it,
[6:34] Speaker 2: by participation in the divine nature, to be in Christ,
[6:40] Speaker 2: to experience his divine life. Well, it's to experience his energies,
[6:47] Speaker 2: not of course, to partake in his essence, for no
[6:50] Speaker 2: one can see God and live, and so in divine
[6:54] Speaker 2: embrace the bride shares the very life of the bride gris.
[7:00] Speaker 2: This is a foretaste of the time when God breaks
[7:03] Speaker 2: into history, perfectly uniting divinity and humanity within himself, the
[7:11] Speaker 2: time in which Jesus Jesus is revealed as well the
[7:16] Speaker 2: new Moses, the Moses who carries his beloved bride over
[7:21] Speaker 2: the threshold of Jordan into the new Jerusalem that comes
[7:25] Speaker 2: down out of Heaven from God. Well, the finality of
[7:30] Speaker 2: the parable. The bridegroom arrives, and the five virgins who
[7:36] Speaker 2: were ready went in with him to an eternal wedding banquet.
[7:42] Speaker 2: And then and then, says Jesus, the door was irrevocably shut. Later,
[7:53] Speaker 2: when the five foolish virgins arrived bereft of the oil
[7:57] Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit, the door had been shut. To
[8:01] Speaker 2: the five foolish virgins, who belatedly ask for the door
[8:05] Speaker 2: to be opened, The bridegroom repride, I tell you the truth.
[8:10] Speaker 2: I do not know you. As with the parable of
[8:15] Speaker 2: the Ten Virgins, the essence, with the essence of the
[8:20] Speaker 2: revelation of Jesus Christ of the seven churches in the
[8:23] Speaker 2: province of Asia, is that too of a wedding covenant.
[8:29] Speaker 2: I recall that it begins with seven love letters to
[8:32] Speaker 2: a persecuted bride to True Israel. It continues with the
[8:39] Speaker 2: noxious vision of a prostituted bride emblematic of apostate Israel.
[8:46] Speaker 2: And then in graphic Old Testament pictures, we see the
[8:50] Speaker 2: judgment of God, a judgment that is written on a
[8:55] Speaker 2: seven sealed scroll, announced by seven angels with seven trumpets,
[9:00] Speaker 2: depicted through seven plagues that befall a prostitute in bed
[9:07] Speaker 2: with a beast. And then in conclusion, there is the
[9:13] Speaker 2: unveiling of a purified bride of True Israel, True Israel,
[9:19] Speaker 2: carried over the threshold of Jordan into the New Jerusalem
[9:24] Speaker 2: that comes down out of Heaven from God in like fashion,
[9:32] Speaker 2: in similarity to the five Foolish Virgins, nothing impure will
[9:41] Speaker 2: enter the New Jerusalem, but only those those wise and
[9:46] Speaker 2: virtuous virgins whose names are written in the Lamb's Book
[9:52] Speaker 2: of Life. The eschatological significance of Holy Tuesday must never
[9:59] Speaker 2: be forgot. The five foolish, the five wise, the five
[10:06] Speaker 2: who enter into the eternal banquet of their Lord, and
[10:11] Speaker 2: the five forever shut out Holy Tuesday, hopefully as impressed
[10:20] Speaker 2: upon your mind on every Tuesday, indeed every day of
[10:26] Speaker 2: the year, as we celebrate, as we anticipate the coming

[14:01] Speaker 3: Hank Hannagraph has dedicated his life to defending truth because
[14:05] Speaker 3: truth matters. However, his life and ministry were radically transformed
[14:09] Speaker 3: by another three word phrase, Life matters more. Truth matters
[14:13] Speaker 3: because Christianity is rooted in history and evidence. Life matters
[14:17] Speaker 3: more because it.
[14:18] Speaker 4: Is the experience of union with God. The goal of
[14:21] Speaker 4: Christian life is union with God. All attempts to understand
[14:25] Speaker 4: Christianity from a solely rational perspective put us in danger
[14:29] Speaker 4: of devolving into a transactional rather than transformational relationship with God.

[15:50] Speaker 1: Hank Canagraph. I, thank.
[15:51] Speaker 2: You very much, Randy. It's worth asking whether we're giving
[15:54] Speaker 2: up more and more of our religious freedoms or religious
[15:58] Speaker 2: liberties to a government that in many cases is telling
[16:02] Speaker 2: us what we can and cannot do, even respecting or
[16:08] Speaker 2: freedom of worship. These are things that we need to
[16:13] Speaker 2: think about critically, and I think that's one of the
[16:19] Speaker 2: primary reasons that I am so excited about. Free to
[16:24] Speaker 2: Believe The Battle of Religious Liberty in America by Luke Goodrich.
[16:30] Speaker 2: Luke addresses three primary needs. First, the fact that you
[16:36] Speaker 2: and I need a theology of religious freedom. We need
[16:41] Speaker 2: to know how to think about religious freedom theologically. Too
[16:46] Speaker 2: often we begin thinking about religious freedom as a legal,
[16:50] Speaker 2: a cultural, a political problem without first recognizing that its
[16:56] Speaker 2: roots are theological. They're so much in scripture that pertains
[17:04] Speaker 2: to religious freedom. Secondly, we need to understand the unique
[17:10] Speaker 2: religious freedom challenges that we face. We ought not to
[17:16] Speaker 2: uncritically seed power to a government, to a secular institution,
[17:24] Speaker 2: encroaching upon the liberty of the church. Our challenges today
[17:29] Speaker 2: are different from the religious challenges well maybe even ten
[17:34] Speaker 2: or fifteen years ago, but we cannot avoid being prepared.
[17:45] Speaker 2: We need to understand what our challenges are. And today,
[17:50] Speaker 2: five of the most pressing religious freedom challenges, as Luke
[17:54] Speaker 2: Goodrich points out, have to do with religious discrimination, abortion rights,
[18:01] Speaker 2: gay rights, Islam, and the public square. And then finally,
[18:10] Speaker 2: you and I died stag action. Our faith is not
[18:14] Speaker 2: a set of abstract principles. This is a calling. This
[18:20] Speaker 2: is a calling that covers every single aspect of our lives.
[18:26] Speaker 2: American Christians haven't faced serious violations of their religious freedom
[18:33] Speaker 2: for quite some time. We are now faced with that
[18:39] Speaker 2: very specter, and we have to consider how much a
[18:45] Speaker 2: scripture was written to Christians who were in the exact
[18:49] Speaker 2: same boat. To live our faith in a modern culture,
[18:57] Speaker 2: we need to reclaim. We need to point ourselves with
[19:01] Speaker 2: what scripture says to a persecuted church. You know, Jesus
[19:07] Speaker 2: said in this world, you will suffer persecution, but take heart,
[19:11] Speaker 2: I've overcome the world, so we shouldn't be surprised at persecution,
[19:16] Speaker 2: but we ought to know how we are to live
[19:22] Speaker 2: in the midst of it. Free to Believe. The Battle

[19:41] Speaker 2: lines Doctor Carol in Nashville, Tennessee. Hi, Carol, Hi, he Hi,
[19:48] Speaker 2: I really.
[19:48] Speaker 5: Enjoy your show. Thank you, thank you for having my call.
[19:53] Speaker 5: I'm selling for my thirteen year old sign. He's almost fourteen,
[19:56] Speaker 5: and he was saying to set to Christ in when
[19:59] Speaker 5: he was now years old. But he struggles with knowing
[20:03] Speaker 5: that he saved, the assurance and peace that he saved,
[20:07] Speaker 5: and and that he can't lose his salvation. And he says,
[20:12] Speaker 5: you know, he talks to God because I've said, the
[20:14] Speaker 5: only thing I can tell him is to pray and
[20:17] Speaker 5: ask the Lord to give him that peace that he's
[20:20] Speaker 5: that he saved. And he says, he prays and prays
[20:23] Speaker 5: and praise and ask the Lord to reveal himself to him.
[20:27] Speaker 5: But he's not. He doesn't get any answers. He doesn't
[20:30] Speaker 5: feel like he hears from God. And he has a
[20:32] Speaker 5: daily he has a discipline of daily praying and talking
[20:36] Speaker 5: to God and reading his Bible. And I just keep
[20:39] Speaker 5: trying to, you know, telling him, if you know the
[20:41] Speaker 5: Bible says, seek him with all your heart and you
[20:43] Speaker 5: will find him. But he it's not enough to satisfy him.
[20:48] Speaker 5: And I was wondering if you have any idea what
[20:50] Speaker 5: I can shake him.
[20:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, first of all, I love the description
[20:55] Speaker 2: of your son as someone who is similar to what
[20:59] Speaker 2: is described in the Psalms, as someone who pants after God,
[21:04] Speaker 2: as the deer pants after the water brooks. That's a
[21:08] Speaker 2: very very good thing. Now, one of the things that's
[21:13] Speaker 2: so important is that you explain to your son that
[21:19] Speaker 2: salvation is not punctiliar, meaning it's not a point in time. Rather,
[21:25] Speaker 2: salvation is a process. We're saved, we're being saved, we
[21:29] Speaker 2: will be saved, and that means that we're never saved
[21:32] Speaker 2: in isolation, but we're always saved within the context of
[21:38] Speaker 2: the Church, which is the body of Christ and which
[21:42] Speaker 2: is the ground and pillar of truth. It is the
[21:46] Speaker 2: reservoir by which our thirst is quenched. For in the
[21:52] Speaker 2: church we receive the graces that transform us. Now, by
[21:57] Speaker 2: way of analogy, Carol, you have a relationship with your son.
[22:01] Speaker 2: Your son loves you. You're interacting with your son. That's
[22:05] Speaker 2: very clear from the prolog to your question. And so
[22:09] Speaker 2: as you interact with your son, your relationship deepens over time.
[22:16] Speaker 2: If you were to avoid your son, that relationship would well,
[22:20] Speaker 2: would would grow rather tepid and cold. But you're you're
[22:28] Speaker 2: nurturing that relationship. Well, that's precisely what happens within the
[22:33] Speaker 2: context of the Body of Christ. Within the Church, we
[22:38] Speaker 2: receive graces that transform us. And that's the process that
[22:43] Speaker 2: I'm talking about. So, for example, when you partake of
[22:47] Speaker 2: the Eucharist, when you partake of the body and blood
[22:51] Speaker 2: of Christ, you are energized. You're energized by a power
[22:57] Speaker 2: that is in you, but not of you. I was
[23:00] Speaker 2: sharing in the first part of the broadcast today about
[23:04] Speaker 2: Saint Gregory Palamas. He was talking about how when a
[23:08] Speaker 2: pot is in the kiln, it shares the very life
[23:12] Speaker 2: of the fire. It takes on its hot and burning qualities,
[23:16] Speaker 2: it becomes capable of transferring that very energy to something else.
[23:21] Speaker 2: But if it's removed from the fire, the pot still
[23:25] Speaker 2: participates in the fire's effects, but it no longer participates
[23:29] Speaker 2: in the energies of the fire itself. Now, the participation
[23:33] Speaker 2: in the energies of the fire is the truer participation
[23:37] Speaker 2: than the participation and the effects. And thus, while all
[23:42] Speaker 2: God's children participate in the effects of their creator, not
[23:47] Speaker 2: all participate in God's very life. That is reserved for
[23:53] Speaker 2: the saints in the Church who have God not only
[23:56] Speaker 2: as maker but also as father through divine adoption. And
[24:01] Speaker 2: I say all of that simply to underscore the importance
[24:06] Speaker 2: of not only praying, which is wonderful. I'm so glad
[24:10] Speaker 2: that your son is a prayer life, but it's also
[24:13] Speaker 2: participating within the church week by week. Because it's in
[24:21] Speaker 2: the church that you're nurtured and fed. You grow. You
[24:26] Speaker 2: grow not an isolation, but you grow just as you
[24:29] Speaker 2: would in a family, but in an extended family, the
[24:33] Speaker 2: family of God. So all of this is a matter
[24:38] Speaker 2: of taking part in the principles that are provided for
[24:44] Speaker 2: us in the principle of prayer, in the principle of
[24:48] Speaker 2: reading the Bible, in the principle of partaking of the Eucharist,
[24:55] Speaker 2: in the principle of being an effective witness for Jesus Christ. Cumulatively,
[25:01] Speaker 2: all of that enhances the relationship, the passion, and really
[25:07] Speaker 2: the feeling that we have, the feeling of love that
[25:11] Speaker 2: grows ever stronger as we participate in all of these
[25:16] Speaker 2: wonderful disciplines that God provides us within the spiritual gymnasium,
[25:22] Speaker 2: which is the Church. Fortunately going to leave it there, Carol,
[25:25] Speaker 2: we are at a time for this edition of the
[25:28] Speaker 2: Bible answer Man Broadcast to remember my book Truth Matters,
[25:32] Speaker 2: Life Matters More. A lot of what I was just
[25:34] Speaker 2: talking about with Carol found in that book Truth Matters,
[25:39] Speaker 2: Life matters More. Apart from the truth kept by the
[25:42] Speaker 2: whole church, our faith would be uncertain. But the life
[25:47] Speaker 2: that matters more. While not a prohibition on truth, it
[25:51] Speaker 2: is the transcending of truth, the transcending of all philosophical speculation.
[25:58] Speaker 2: It is the experience of union with God, fellowship in
[26:03] Speaker 2: the Holy Trinity. At a time, thanks for standing with us,
[26:06] Speaker 2: See you next time with more.
