[0:07] Speaker 1: You're just in time for the best of the Bible
[0:09] Speaker 1: answer Man broadcast with Hank Canagraph, the radio outreach of
[0:13] Speaker 1: the Christian Research Institute. Our purpose here at CRII is
[0:18] Speaker 1: to equip Christians to pursue sound doctrine, to discern truth
[0:22] Speaker 1: and error, and to become faithful disciples of Christ because
[0:26] Speaker 1: life and truth matter. For more information, to order resources
[0:31] Speaker 1: or donate, call eight eight eight seven thousand CROI or
[0:36] Speaker 1: go online to equip dot org. That's equip dot org.
[0:42] Speaker 1: The following program was pre recorded. Now here's the President
[0:47] Speaker 1: of the Christian Research Institute, Hank Canagraph.
[0:50] Speaker 2: Thank you very much for Andy. A couple of words
[0:52] Speaker 2: before we go to our callers. One of the resources
[0:55] Speaker 2: we like to put into people's hands is a little
[0:57] Speaker 2: four x six laminated flip chart lights on your path
[1:01] Speaker 2: or reading the Bible for all it's worth. Do remember
[1:04] Speaker 2: that those lights begin with the L the literal principle
[1:10] Speaker 2: of Biblical interpretation, which will serve to remind you that
[1:16] Speaker 2: you are called to interpret the Word of God just
[1:20] Speaker 2: as you interpret other forms of communication. In the most obvious,
[1:27] Speaker 2: the most natural sense, as has been well said, to
[1:32] Speaker 2: interpret the Bible literally is to interpret the Bible as literature. Thus,
[1:39] Speaker 2: when a Biblical author uses a symbol or an allegory,
[1:46] Speaker 2: we do violence to his intentions if we interpret him literalistically. Consider,
[1:53] Speaker 2: for example, the Lord's words in John two nineteen. Destroy
[1:58] Speaker 2: this temple, said esays, and I will raise it again
[2:02] Speaker 2: in three days. The Jews understood Jesus in a wooden
[2:09] Speaker 2: literal fashion. They thought he was saying that the temple,
[2:18] Speaker 2: which had taken forty six years to build, could be
[2:23] Speaker 2: destroyed in three days and rebuilt again in that period
[2:28] Speaker 2: of time. Jesus, however, spoke figuratively, as the apostle John
[2:35] Speaker 2: explained that temple he had spoken of was the temple
[2:39] Speaker 2: of his body. Likewise, when the Apostle John described Satan
[2:45] Speaker 2: as a dragon or variously as an ancient serpent, would
[2:55] Speaker 2: be seriously mistaken to suppose that he intends to communicate
[2:59] Speaker 2: that's Satan is literally a smoke spouting snake. My point
[3:07] Speaker 2: is simply this, a literalistic method of interpretation does as
[3:11] Speaker 2: much violence to the text as does a spiritualized interpretation
[3:16] Speaker 2: that empties the text of objective meaning. So to avoid
[3:22] Speaker 2: either extreme, you, as a believer, need to adeptly employ
[3:29] Speaker 2: the literal principle of Biblical interpretation. You need to pay
[3:33] Speaker 2: strict or careful attention to what's called form or genre,
[3:40] Speaker 2: figurative language, and even the kind of fantasy imagery that
[3:46] Speaker 2: the apostle John uses in the Book of Revelation. And
[3:50] Speaker 2: when we talk about Satan being a dragon, dragons are
[3:54] Speaker 2: obviously the stuff of mythology, not the stuff of theology.
[3:59] Speaker 2: So you need to exercise your mind to grasp what
[4:05] Speaker 2: the author is driving at. Metaphors, when we use them,
[4:10] Speaker 2: even in common parlance, are used in a way that
[4:17] Speaker 2: have significant meaning. They have sharp teeth. So it doesn't
[4:22] Speaker 2: mean when you use metaphorical language that you're not pointing
[4:25] Speaker 2: to something concrete or something substantive. It means that you
[4:31] Speaker 2: have to use your mind to get what the author
[4:34] Speaker 2: is driving at. And this is certainly true with biblical
[4:41] Speaker 2: forms or figures of speech. So again, as a believer,
[4:48] Speaker 2: you need to learn to read the Bible for all
[4:50] Speaker 2: it's worth. I've produced elaminated flip chart memoraboo keys to
[4:55] Speaker 2: understanding what God has said. Lights on your path are
[4:57] Speaker 2: reading the Bible for all it's worth. If God has spoken,
[5:00] Speaker 2: question is what has God said? Using this flip chart,
[5:05] Speaker 2: you can master the principles of Biblical interpretation in minutes
[5:09] Speaker 2: and remember them for a lifetime. It's a memorable guide
[5:13] Speaker 2: to the art and science a Biblical interpretation. It's an
[5:17] Speaker 2: art and that the more you do it, the better
[5:19] Speaker 2: you get at it's a science and that rules apply.
[5:22] Speaker 2: You can find this resource as well as many others
[5:24] Speaker 2: on the web had equipped dot org. A lot of
[5:27] Speaker 2: you hanging on. We'll go right to the phone callers.
[5:30] Speaker 2: First up today, let's talk to Abraham. Abraham is listening
[5:35] Speaker 2: in Lincoln, Nebraska.
[5:37] Speaker 3: Hi, Abraham, Hello, Hank, how are you.
[5:39] Speaker 2: I'm well, Thank you.
[5:42] Speaker 3: I have a question I'm struggling with. Okay, I need
[5:44] Speaker 3: your help.
[5:45] Speaker 2: Sure.
[5:46] Speaker 3: The verse is in Mark chapter nine. If your foot
[5:51] Speaker 3: causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better
[5:55] Speaker 3: for you to enter the enter life lane than having
[5:59] Speaker 3: your fee to be cast into health and basically all
[6:03] Speaker 3: the way to through forty seven. My question to you,
[6:07] Speaker 3: if Hank, is if a person, and I'm going to
[6:11] Speaker 3: use this as an example, an alcoholic and they remove
[6:14] Speaker 3: alcohol from their life, now they will not be maimed
[6:20] Speaker 3: and they'll be set free. So I don't understand the verse.
[6:24] Speaker 2: I guess yeah, Well, the verse again, is very much
[6:27] Speaker 2: in concert with what I was saying at the opening
[6:29] Speaker 2: of the broadcast. The Bible uses what is called hyperbole.
[6:35] Speaker 2: Hyperbole is a figure of speech that employs exaggeration for effect.
[6:40] Speaker 2: In other words, this is a way of emphasizing something,
[6:43] Speaker 2: and the emphasis is this. What happens in the present
[6:49] Speaker 2: pales by comparison to what will happen for all eternity.
[6:54] Speaker 2: So we're better off crippled in this life than having
[6:59] Speaker 2: a perfectly operational body and spending an eternity apart from God,
[7:06] Speaker 2: apart from his glory, apart from his goodness, apart from
[7:11] Speaker 2: his grace, forever and ever and ever. Remember the rich
[7:16] Speaker 2: man who died and ended up in torment. He wanted
[7:20] Speaker 2: to go back and warn his five brothers that they
[7:23] Speaker 2: wouldn't come to a place like this. But the response was,
[7:27] Speaker 2: they have Moses and the prophets. If they don't listen
[7:29] Speaker 2: to them, they're not going to listen even if someone
[7:32] Speaker 2: rises from the dead. The further point, in terms of
[7:34] Speaker 2: your question is this, he was now in torment, and
[7:38] Speaker 2: he would have given up anything, his luxury, his well being,
[7:46] Speaker 2: his place of prominence. He would have traded with the
[7:51] Speaker 2: beggar that was lying by his gait, probably crippled and hurt, hungry, downtrodden,
[7:59] Speaker 2: and yet he would trade with him in a moment.
[8:03] Speaker 2: And that is the point that this hyperbole is driving
[8:07] Speaker 2: directly too.
[8:09] Speaker 3: Okay, well, thank you very much, you got it.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your call. Let's go back
[8:12] Speaker 2: to the phone lines. We'll talk next to Dave listening
[8:14] Speaker 2: in Louisville, Kentucky.
[8:15] Speaker 4: Hi, Dave, Hi, Hank, bless you for taking my call.
[8:19] Speaker 4: I appreciate it so much, Oh my pleasure. When I
[8:22] Speaker 4: try my best to remain non emotional, but this is
[8:26] Speaker 4: an emotional subject for me. The question is simply, gan
[8:33] Speaker 4: a previously divorced Christian marry another Christian and well one
[8:40] Speaker 4: or the others.
[8:40] Speaker 2: Then if they do that, well, it depends on circumstances.
[8:45] Speaker 2: There are biblical grounds for divorce and remarriage, and in fact,
[8:51] Speaker 2: we felt that this was such an important issue that
[8:54] Speaker 2: we devoted an entire article in the Christian Research Journal
[8:57] Speaker 2: to explicating the ground for divorce and remarriage. But remember
[9:04] Speaker 2: the words of Jesus who says, anyone who divorces his
[9:07] Speaker 2: wife except for merital and faithfulness and marries another commits adultery,
[9:12] Speaker 2: and Paul follows up in Fort Corinthians chapter seven, saying
[9:16] Speaker 2: that if an unbelieving spouse leaves, the other person is
[9:22] Speaker 2: not bound in that circumstance. If, however, the unbeliever is
[9:26] Speaker 2: willing to stay in the relationship, the other party must
[9:30] Speaker 2: not get a divorce. So Paul gives ground for divorce,
[9:34] Speaker 2: as does Jesus give ground for divorce. Obviously, divorce, ultimately
[9:40] Speaker 2: from a Biblical perspective, is because of the hardness of
[9:43] Speaker 2: our hearts. So it's the best option in all cases,
[9:47] Speaker 2: even in the exceptions just mentioned that we work towards reconciliation.
[9:51] Speaker 2: That's the greater good principle of all So if the
[9:55] Speaker 2: door is open to reconciliation, we should try to walk
[9:59] Speaker 2: through that door. But if the other party closes the
[10:02] Speaker 2: door to reconciliation, we're not bound in that circumstance.
[10:06] Speaker 4: You're talking about, Matthew nineteen, Is that correct?
[10:09] Speaker 2: Matthew nineteen, as well as First Corinthians chapter seven.
[10:13] Speaker 4: Okay, because I've got a very good pasture. But that's
[10:16] Speaker 4: where the debate comes in.
[10:19] Speaker 2: Well, I think what would really help you, Dave, Not
[10:22] Speaker 2: just because I'm short on time, but I think it
[10:24] Speaker 2: really bears diving into and the article by Michael Ross
[10:30] Speaker 2: which appeared in the Christian Research Journal, and if you
[10:32] Speaker 2: hang on, I'll just send it to you. I think
[10:35] Speaker 2: that's one of the best instructive pieces to not only
[10:39] Speaker 2: give you a grasp of what the Bible does or
[10:41] Speaker 2: doesn't say in this regard, but it is a direct
[10:45] Speaker 2: application to circumstances that many people find themselves in. So
[10:49] Speaker 2: it really helps them contextualize what the Scripture is saying,
[10:54] Speaker 2: so that you're thoroughly biblical in whatever your actions are. Again,
[10:57] Speaker 2: the article is available. Hang on, We'll put that article
[11:00] Speaker 2: and your hands were right back with more of your questions.
[11:03] Speaker 1: The famous British apologist GK. Chesterton once noted, the true
[11:08] Speaker 1: soldier fights not because he hates what is in front
[11:11] Speaker 1: of him, but because he loves what is behind him.
[11:13] Speaker 1: Because at CRII we love what is behind us, our faith,
[11:17] Speaker 1: our families, and our freedoms. We will never retreat quietly
[11:21] Speaker 1: from the growing assaults on life and truth, even when

[12:11] Speaker 1: the very words of God himself. Three years in the
[12:16] Speaker 1: making and based on two decades of research and reflection,
[12:20] Speaker 1: Hank Henagraph's monumental book Has God Spoken answers what is
[12:24] Speaker 1: surely the most important question facing our world. In Has
[12:28] Speaker 1: God Spoken? Memorable proofs of the Bible's divine inspiration, Hank
[12:33] Speaker 1: counters the contentions of the Bible attackers and clearly shows
[12:36] Speaker 1: that belief in the Holy Scriptures is not a guess
[12:39] Speaker 1: or wishful thinking. It is the only logical conclusion after

[14:04] Speaker 5: Truth Matters. Yet, an encounter with Christians in the underground

[15:07] Speaker 1: Now back to the Bible answer Man broadcast and your
[15:10] Speaker 1: host and canagraph.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Thank you very much for Indian Right back to the
[15:13] Speaker 2: phone callers. Next up is Peter listening on the web
[15:16] Speaker 2: in West Palm Beach, Florida.
[15:18] Speaker 6: Hi, Peter, Hey, thanks for taking my call.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Hanks, you are welcome.
[15:22] Speaker 7: Yeah. My question is in light of Galatians five to three,
[15:25] Speaker 7: when he says, I testify again to every man who
[15:28] Speaker 7: accepts circumcision that he's obligated to keep the whole law,
[15:31] Speaker 7: as well as one Corinthians seven eighteen, which says let
[15:35] Speaker 7: him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was
[15:38] Speaker 7: anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised, let him
[15:40] Speaker 7: not seek circumcision, for neither circumcision counts or anything. So
[15:44] Speaker 7: why would Paul get Timothy circumcised when he told the
[15:48] Speaker 7: Galatians in Chapter two Versus.
[15:53] Speaker 8: Five.
[15:53] Speaker 7: So then we did not yield in submission even for
[15:55] Speaker 7: a moment, so that the truth of the Gospel might
[15:57] Speaker 7: be preserved for you.
[16:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, that takes some explaining. Let me try to unpack
[16:03] Speaker 2: that for you. First of all, let me talk to
[16:05] Speaker 2: the issue of motive, and then I'll get into the
[16:07] Speaker 2: passages themselves. If the motive is to win Jews to Christ,
[16:14] Speaker 2: as was the case with Paul, who said to the Jew,
[16:18] Speaker 2: I became like the Jews to win the Jews, or variously,
[16:23] Speaker 2: I have become all things to all men, so that
[16:27] Speaker 2: by all possible means I might save some. If that's
[16:31] Speaker 2: the motive, it's perfectly acceptable to engage in civil and
[16:37] Speaker 2: ceremonial laws, which are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Now,
[16:43] Speaker 2: on the other hand, if the motive was to appease
[16:47] Speaker 2: the Judaizers, as is the case in the passage to
[16:51] Speaker 2: which you refer Galatians, the Judaizers were saying obedience to
[16:56] Speaker 2: the law was required for salvation. If that's the motive,
[17:01] Speaker 2: then sacrifices are an abomination ten amount as Hebrews puts it,
[17:08] Speaker 2: to trampling on the precious blood of Jesus Christ. So
[17:11] Speaker 2: what's going on? In Galatians five to two Paul tells
[17:14] Speaker 2: gentile converts that they will be cut off from Christ
[17:19] Speaker 2: if they allow themselves to be circumcised because they are
[17:23] Speaker 2: under the influence of Judaizers who are making obedience to
[17:27] Speaker 2: the law necessary for salvation. Now, on the other hand,
[17:32] Speaker 2: and Acts sixteen, Paul has Timothy circumcised for the sake
[17:36] Speaker 2: of witnessing to the Jews. So his motive was witness,
[17:42] Speaker 2: not works righteousness. So again, he is doing this so
[17:48] Speaker 2: that he can reach the very people that the Judaizers
[17:53] Speaker 2: were actually repelling.
[17:56] Speaker 7: Is that what Paul was also doing in Acts twenty
[17:58] Speaker 7: one when he went to the purification rights and other
[18:02] Speaker 7: people were accusing him of teaching the Jews that they
[18:04] Speaker 7: didn't have to forsake love Moses. Yeah, okay, So would
[18:09] Speaker 7: that be similar to like me going to a Roman
[18:11] Speaker 7: Catholic church and doing some of their rituals like penance
[18:15] Speaker 7: and stuff like that, just try to win some Roman Catholics.
[18:18] Speaker 2: Well, no, I don't think so. Remember that what you
[18:21] Speaker 2: have here in the scripture is a transitional period where
[18:26] Speaker 2: you have a very clear indication of law on the
[18:31] Speaker 2: one hand, and then the fulfillment of the law on
[18:34] Speaker 2: the other. So you had the Jews who were used
[18:38] Speaker 2: to keeping the law, the civil and ceremonial laws, temple priests, sacrifice,
[18:44] Speaker 2: circumcision and the like, all pointing forward to Jesus Christ
[18:48] Speaker 2: that Jesus Christ had just come, and the apostles are
[18:52] Speaker 2: communicating that Jesus Christ is a substance that fulfills the
[18:56] Speaker 2: type and the shadow. So in context, in this period
[19:00] Speaker 2: of time, Paul wants to use all means possible to
[19:06] Speaker 2: reach the Jews rather than to repel the Jews. So
[19:09] Speaker 2: his motive is evangelism. I don't think that we want
[19:14] Speaker 2: to simply play fast and loose with issues today and say, well,
[19:22] Speaker 2: the reason I'm doing that is I want to reach someone.
[19:25] Speaker 2: If what you are doing to reach is not unlawful,
[19:28] Speaker 2: no problem. But you don't want to go against what's
[19:33] Speaker 2: very clearly articulated in scripture in order to reach someone
[19:38] Speaker 2: you got it. Thank you so much for your call.
[19:39] Speaker 2: When I go back to the phone lines, we'll talk
[19:41] Speaker 2: next to Mike listening in Saint Louis, Missouri.
[19:43] Speaker 6: Hi, Mike, Hi, Hey, thank you so much for taking
[19:45] Speaker 6: my call.
[19:46] Speaker 2: My pleasure.
[19:47] Speaker 6: Relatively new study of the Bible, So please excuse elementary
[19:52] Speaker 6: nature of this, Okay, sure, I'm just curious as to
[19:56] Speaker 6: what the relevance of the Old Testament Mosaic law have
[20:00] Speaker 6: as to current day believers in light of the starm
[20:04] Speaker 6: around the mount where Jesus teaches, do not think that
[20:07] Speaker 6: I have come to destroy the law of profits. I
[20:10] Speaker 6: did not come to destroy, but fulfilled. And he goes
[20:12] Speaker 6: on in eighteen nineteen to get even more specific with that.
[20:16] Speaker 2: So it was just.
[20:17] Speaker 6: And then, of course he expands on the commandments in
[20:23] Speaker 6: the next several verses and talks about the spiritle, the
[20:27] Speaker 6: nature in which his expectations are. And I'm just curious
[20:31] Speaker 6: as to what that means to current day believers.
[20:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, what it means is that we can never keep
[20:39] Speaker 2: the law. And that's why Jesus Christ goes on and says,
[20:44] Speaker 2: you have heard that it was said, and then he
[20:46] Speaker 2: elevates the law to a standard that no one can keep.
[20:51] Speaker 2: It's not just about murdering someone. It's if you have
[20:54] Speaker 2: an angry thought, you're already violating the law. So he
[20:59] Speaker 2: extends the meaning of the law to its logical consequence,
[21:04] Speaker 2: and he is saying to his hearers, no one can
[21:08] Speaker 2: keep that standard, and if you want to be saved
[21:11] Speaker 2: by keeping that standard, you have to be perfect, even
[21:15] Speaker 2: as your heavenly father is perfect. Well, you know, the
[21:18] Speaker 2: hearers of Jesus Christ must have scratched their head and said,
[21:22] Speaker 2: if that is true, who then can be saved? We
[21:25] Speaker 2: can't even keep the Mosaic law, much less the extent
[21:30] Speaker 2: to which Jesus Christ takes the law. Well, the answer,
[21:34] Speaker 2: of course is Jesus Christ himself, who is communicating that
[21:37] Speaker 2: he is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.
[21:41] Speaker 2: The answer being that Jesus Christ did what we could
[21:43] Speaker 2: never do, and that's why we say the Gospels not
[21:48] Speaker 2: d but it's done. It's done through the person and
[21:52] Speaker 2: work of Jesus Christ. He did what we could never do,
[21:56] Speaker 2: so he fulfilled completely the law and the prophets. They're
[22:01] Speaker 2: not done away with, they're accomplished in the person and
[22:04] Speaker 2: work of Jesus Christ. Now, as a result of that,
[22:07] Speaker 2: we don't have to keep the civil and ceremonial aspects
[22:10] Speaker 2: of the law that was largely a function of a theocracy,
[22:16] Speaker 2: and it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. There are moral
[22:19] Speaker 2: aspects of the law, however, which we continue to keep,
[22:24] Speaker 2: not to be saved, but they are a way in
[22:28] Speaker 2: which order is kept in society. They're a guide for
[22:33] Speaker 2: believers in living out the Christian life. They are a
[22:37] Speaker 2: means of revealing sin and therefore serve as a schoolmaster
[22:42] Speaker 2: to drive us to Jesus Christ, who alone can keep
[22:45] Speaker 2: the law perfectly.
[22:47] Speaker 6: Okay, well, if that makes sense to me. I mean,
[22:50] Speaker 6: what I hear you saying, is that, morally speaking, that
[22:55] Speaker 6: the law as it was given, the laws as despective
[23:00] Speaker 6: concerning the amount. Morally speaking, weird to continue along that path.
[23:06] Speaker 6: Obviously it has nothing to do with salvation in any way,
[23:10] Speaker 6: but it doesn't exclude us just because He has come
[23:13] Speaker 6: and fulfilled the law of continuing to meet those standards
[23:19] Speaker 6: and those guidelines.
[23:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. The civil and ceremonial aspects of the
[23:23] Speaker 2: law are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The moral aspects of
[23:26] Speaker 2: the law are still significant to society.
[23:30] Speaker 6: Okay, well, thank you so much.
[23:31] Speaker 2: Hank Hey, you got it. Back to the phone lines.
[23:33] Speaker 2: Jason in Illinois, Hi, Jason.
[23:36] Speaker 8: Hey, hey, good listen to your show man. I get
[23:38] Speaker 8: a lot out of it. Thank you, appreciate what you're doing.
[23:42] Speaker 8: Just a question about the translations of the Bible. Someone
[23:45] Speaker 8: mentioned the other day that the Bible was fallible because
[23:49] Speaker 8: of the different translations through the years. What we read
[23:54] Speaker 8: now has well has a lot of error in it.
[23:58] Speaker 8: And they cited two past just in particular, one of
[24:02] Speaker 8: them Matthew twenty eight nineteen saying that it did not
[24:05] Speaker 8: say baptizing the name of the Father and of the
[24:08] Speaker 8: Son and the Holy Spirit, but it just simply had
[24:11] Speaker 8: said from the translation, baptizing in the name of the Lord.
[24:15] Speaker 8: And then I think he quoted one in First John
[24:17] Speaker 8: about the three that bear record in Heaven. Yeah, he
[24:20] Speaker 8: said that did not say that that it was added
[24:24] Speaker 8: by the Catholic Church whenever. He didn't really say when.
[24:28] Speaker 8: So I was just wonder what your take was on
[24:30] Speaker 8: the translations and were they infallible and can we use every.
[24:35] Speaker 2: The translations are not infallible, but the translations are wonderful
[24:40] Speaker 2: in that we have all kinds of manuscript evidence that
[24:43] Speaker 2: gives us the ability to compare one copy with another
[24:46] Speaker 2: and get back to the hotographer. There are differences in style,
[24:50] Speaker 2: there are no differences in substance. Certainly, if you look
[24:52] Speaker 2: at the NIV, it's a thought for thought translation or
[24:55] Speaker 2: what we call it dynamic equivalency. If you look at
[24:58] Speaker 2: the NESV or the King James version, it's more of
[25:01] Speaker 2: a word for word translation, or more of a formal equivalency.
[25:07] Speaker 2: But the point here is simply to say, in direct
[25:11] Speaker 2: answer to your question, first John five' seven simply is
[25:16] Speaker 2: not included in the text because the best manuscript evidence
[25:21] Speaker 2: does not Have First john five seventy, seven which is
[25:25] Speaker 2: called The Comma. Johannium as far As matthew twenty eight,
[25:29] Speaker 2: nineteen there is no real textual critical dispute over that particular. Verse,
