On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (03/30/26), Hank discusses Jesus Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This is, of course, celebrated by Christians as Palm Sunday, which the Western Church observed yesterday, and the Eastern Church will celebrate this coming Sunday. On Palm Sunday, we celebrate Jesus riding into Jerusalem, not as a political messiah, but rather in humility and peace in fulfillment of Zechariah’s famed prophecy: “See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9 NIV). Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem announced the establishment of the Kingdom of God. It was a foretaste of the time that He will gather His perfected bride and carry her over the threshold of Jordan into a New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.

[0:59] Speaker 1: here's Hank Hannah.
[1:00] Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Randy. The Western Christian Church celebrated
[1:05] Speaker 2: Palm Sunday yesterday, but if you miss the significance of
[1:11] Speaker 2: this celebration, there is the potential for a do over.
[1:18] Speaker 2: I say that because Eastern Christianity celebrates Palm Sunday next week,
[1:24] Speaker 2: then that's due to the fact that Eastern and Western
[1:27] Speaker 2: Christianity have different liturgical calendars. The Western Church follows the
[1:34] Speaker 2: Gregorian calendar, a calendar to creed by Pope Gregory the
[1:41] Speaker 2: thirteenth in fifteen eighty two, while the Eastern Church still
[1:46] Speaker 2: follows the older Julian calendar, named of course for Julius Caesar,
[1:53] Speaker 2: who introduced it in forty six BC. Now, the reasons
[1:59] Speaker 2: for the different calendars are very interesting. The Julian calendar
[2:06] Speaker 2: is less scientifically accurate in that it doesn't reflect the
[2:11] Speaker 2: actual time it takes for the Earth to revolve around
[2:16] Speaker 2: the Sun. It also inserts a leap year every four years,
[2:23] Speaker 2: which results in, of course, too many leap years. Now,
[2:28] Speaker 2: while there is a revised Julian calendar which is even
[2:32] Speaker 2: more accurate than the Gregorian calendar, most Orthodox Christians continue
[2:37] Speaker 2: to follow the old Julian calendar, at least when it
[2:41] Speaker 2: comes to to Poscat. Now. The primary reason for this
[2:48] Speaker 2: is that the Eastern Orthodox Church represents the Church of
[2:54] Speaker 2: the seven Ecumenical Councils, the first of which is the
[2:58] Speaker 2: Council of Nicea, which mandated that Pasca chronologically follow the
[3:05] Speaker 2: Jewish Passover. Now there's a reason for that. It's probably
[3:09] Speaker 2: due to the fact that the crucifixion and resurrection of
[3:12] Speaker 2: Our Lord took place after he entered Jerusalem to celebrate
[3:17] Speaker 2: the Passover. At any rate, the East adheres to this mandate.
[3:25] Speaker 2: Western Christianity does not, so on occasion, Western Pasco or
[3:32] Speaker 2: Easter precedes the Jewish Passover. What really matters for this
[3:38] Speaker 2: discussion is that we don't pass by Palm Sunday without
[3:44] Speaker 2: regarding its transcendently important spiritual implications. This is an important
[3:51] Speaker 2: day on which we commemorate Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
[4:00] Speaker 2: Read the account in Matthew chapter twenty one, and I
[4:05] Speaker 2: hope you'll read it again and again. This is the
[4:09] Speaker 2: account where Jesus sends two disciples. They're at the Mount
[4:15] Speaker 2: of Olives. He sends them into the village and he
[4:22] Speaker 2: tells them that they're going to find a donkey tied
[4:25] Speaker 2: to a colt. He says, loose them and bring them
[4:29] Speaker 2: to me. And if anyone says anything to you, you
[4:33] Speaker 2: shall say the Lord has needed them, and immediately they
[4:38] Speaker 2: will send them. And all of that was done that
[4:41] Speaker 2: it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet saying,
[4:44] Speaker 2: tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming
[4:48] Speaker 2: to you lowly and sitting on a donkey, a colt
[4:55] Speaker 2: the full of a donkey. So the disciples went and
[4:58] Speaker 2: did as Jesus come out, and they brought the donkey
[5:02] Speaker 2: and the colt. They laid their clothes on them and
[5:05] Speaker 2: set him on them, and a very great multitude spread
[5:09] Speaker 2: their clothes on the ground. Others cut branches from the
[5:12] Speaker 2: trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes
[5:16] Speaker 2: who went before and those who followed cried out, saying,
[5:20] Speaker 2: Hosanna to the son of David, Blessed is he who
[5:25] Speaker 2: comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the Highest.
[5:32] Speaker 2: And when he had come into Jerusalem, all the city
[5:35] Speaker 2: was moved, saying who is this. So the multitude said,
[5:40] Speaker 2: this is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee. You know,
[5:48] Speaker 2: the crowd surrounding Jesus was well aware of his poignant parables.
[5:55] Speaker 2: They knew about his powerful preaching, his marvelous miracles, especially
[6:02] Speaker 2: the resurrection of Lazarus. Jewish nationalism, of course, was in
[6:08] Speaker 2: full throat, and the multitudes were crying out, Hosanna to
[6:13] Speaker 2: the son of David, Blessed, is he who comes in
[6:16] Speaker 2: the name of the Lord Hosanna in the Highest. They
[6:19] Speaker 2: were saying this for a reason. They were weary of
[6:23] Speaker 2: Roman occupation. They were anxious. They were stressed, that expectantly
[6:30] Speaker 2: urged the miracle working Messiah to lead a righteous rebellion
[6:36] Speaker 2: against their oppressive occupiers. If Jesus could raise the dead,
[6:43] Speaker 2: he could just as easily liberate them from the scourge
[6:48] Speaker 2: of Rome. He could resurrect the Dividic Kingdom, a kingdom
[6:53] Speaker 2: torn asunder by Assyrian and Babylonian superpowers. Jesus, however, had
[7:00] Speaker 2: not come to usher in an earthly theocratic kingdom God
[7:04] Speaker 2: and human flesh. Came instead to bring the Kingdom of
[7:08] Speaker 2: Heaven down to earth. The s On Palm Sunday, we
[7:14] Speaker 2: celebrate Jesus riding into Jerusalem, not as a political messiah,
[7:21] Speaker 2: but rather in humility and peace, in fulfillment of Zachariah's
[7:28] Speaker 2: famed prophecy. Behold, your King comes to you. He is
[7:35] Speaker 2: righteous and saving. He is gentle, and mounted upon a donkey,
[7:43] Speaker 2: even a young fool. Christ's entrance into Jerusalem announced the
[7:49] Speaker 2: establishment of the Kingdom of God. It was a foretaste
[7:54] Speaker 2: of the time that he will gather his perfected bride
[7:59] Speaker 2: and carry her over the threshold of Jordan into a
[8:02] Speaker 2: new Jerusalem. Coming down out of heaven from God. Christ's
[8:06] Speaker 2: message is not one that conveys earthly might, but rather
[8:13] Speaker 2: the glorious heavenly reality that the meek shall inherit the earth.
[8:22] Speaker 2: In his meekness, the Great Prince of Peace enters the
[8:26] Speaker 2: eternal city, riding only on a donkey. In the famous
[8:34] Speaker 2: icon of Palm Sunday, our Lord is seated on a
[8:39] Speaker 2: colt the fall of a donkey, and with his right
[8:44] Speaker 2: hand he blesses the people, crying out, Hosanna to the
[8:49] Speaker 2: son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the
[8:54] Speaker 2: name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest And in
[8:58] Speaker 2: his left hand he holds a scroll, a scroll which
[9:04] Speaker 2: symbolizes that he is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophets,
[9:11] Speaker 2: the prophets who prophesied the coming of Messiah. The very
[9:15] Speaker 2: king who has the balm of Gilead redeems us from
[9:22] Speaker 2: the scourge of sin and death. The cult he rides
[9:27] Speaker 2: alongside the donkey represent faithful Jews, alongside gentiles who pass
[9:35] Speaker 2: from unbelief to faith as the one people of God,
[9:44] Speaker 2: wh when we come back from the break, I want
[9:46] Speaker 2: to say a bit more about the donkey and the
[9:50] Speaker 2: cult that Jesus instructs his disciples to bring to him
[9:54] Speaker 2: from the town of Bethpage. This is noteworthy in that
[9:59] Speaker 2: scale and Infidels have seized upon this very passage to
[10:06] Speaker 2: designate Matthew's account of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem as
[10:12] Speaker 2: not only absurd, but the stuff of myths and fables.
[10:21] Speaker 2: We'll be back in just a few moments with more

[15:38] Speaker 2: Thank you Randy. And as I said before the break,
[15:40] Speaker 2: as we conclude this special broadcast on our Palm Sunday celebrations,
[15:46] Speaker 2: I want to consider one of the many objections that
[15:51] Speaker 2: skeptics raise with respect to the veracity of Matthew's gospel,
[15:58] Speaker 2: and it has to do with the very passage that
[16:01] Speaker 2: I read before the break, the question of how many
[16:05] Speaker 2: donkeys Jesus wrote into Jerusalem, Because, believe it or not,
[16:12] Speaker 2: a good number of fundamentalists on the left suppose Matthew
[16:18] Speaker 2: has Jesus riding two asses into Jerusalem. Now, if you
[16:25] Speaker 2: look into the dictionary, you're going to discover two primary
[16:30] Speaker 2: definitions for the word ass. The first is a donkey.
[16:38] Speaker 2: The second is, well, it's a vain, self important, silly,
[16:46] Speaker 2: or aggressively stupid person. In reading through the websites attempting
[16:53] Speaker 2: to debunk the Bible on the basis of the number
[16:56] Speaker 2: of asses Jesus wrote into Jerusalem. Both death Nitians immediately
[17:01] Speaker 2: spring to mind. One website actually appends the word absurd
[17:06] Speaker 2: to Matthew's rendering of Palm Sunday. They call it absurd.
[17:14] Speaker 2: This is what the website says. In three of the
[17:16] Speaker 2: four accounts of the Triumphal entry, Jesus rides a single donkey. Matthew,
[17:23] Speaker 2: though apparently misunderstands the prophecy and rather absurdly has Jesus
[17:31] Speaker 2: ride two donkeys. Now, for the sake of plental common sense,
[17:38] Speaker 2: I should note that wherever there are two animals, there
[17:42] Speaker 2: is always one animal. If Mark, Luke and John had
[17:47] Speaker 2: stipulated only one donkey while Matthew stated more than one donkey,
[17:53] Speaker 2: while we'd be faced with an obvious contradiction. Instead, the
[17:58] Speaker 2: complementary details divided by the four Gospel writers served to
[18:02] Speaker 2: flesh out the rest of the story. When Saint Matthew
[18:07] Speaker 2: spoke of two asses, he did so advisedly, not absurdly.
[18:14] Speaker 2: In other words, Saint Matthew was using the presence of
[18:19] Speaker 2: two animals for a purpose. It was a way of
[18:21] Speaker 2: depicting faithful Jews and faithful Gentiles together through the mission
[18:31] Speaker 2: and ministry of Jesus. Together they became one body. Far
[18:39] Speaker 2: from contradictory, the Biblical imagery is complex and awe inspiring.
[18:47] Speaker 2: Jesus didn't ride into Jerusalem in a horse and churiot.
[18:52] Speaker 2: He didn't come as a conquering king, but he rode
[18:56] Speaker 2: on an animal, signifying peace in humility. The message is
[19:03] Speaker 2: not one that conveys earthly might, but rather one that
[19:10] Speaker 2: conveys the heavenly reality that the meek will inherit the earth. Well,
[19:19] Speaker 2: Matthew did say that the disciples placed their cloaks on them,
[19:26] Speaker 2: and Jesus sat on them. This isn't to say that
[19:31] Speaker 2: Jesus rode into Jerusalem sitting on two animals simultaneously, as
[19:35] Speaker 2: though his triumphal entry were akin to a clown act.
[19:41] Speaker 2: Straightforward reading of the text is that the disciples placed
[19:46] Speaker 2: their cloaks on two animals and Jesus sat upon them,
[19:52] Speaker 2: meaning that he sat upon the cloaks. But even if
[19:56] Speaker 2: the word them is taken to refer to both animals,
[20:00] Speaker 2: would hardly be absurd. When we say that the president
[20:06] Speaker 2: rode into Washington in a motorcade. Only the most entrenched
[20:13] Speaker 2: literalists supposes that he was sitting in multiple vehicles simultaneously.
[20:20] Speaker 2: Absurdly therefore does not apply to Matthew, but rather to
[20:26] Speaker 2: myopic fundamentalists bent on rendering the majestic tapestry of scripture
[20:33] Speaker 2: in wooden literalistic fashion. And remember that, in contrast to spoofers,
[20:44] Speaker 2: scholars look for reliable corset effects to validate historical narratives.
[20:53] Speaker 2: If each of the Gospel writers, if each of them
[20:59] Speaker 2: presented there accounts in identical fashion, we would quite justifiably
[21:06] Speaker 2: wonder about the matter of collusion. Instead, what we have
[21:14] Speaker 2: are complementary details that serve as fibers in an unparalleled tapestry.
[21:22] Speaker 2: Now this is important that a good number of modern
[21:26] Speaker 2: day scholars adamantly proclaim that the New Testament contains four
[21:32] Speaker 2: different and sometimes contradictory versions of the life of our
[21:37] Speaker 2: Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
[21:41] Speaker 4: Now let me just cite.
[21:42] Speaker 2: One one of the alleged contradictions, because this is most
[21:48] Speaker 2: frequently cited, and it involves the female discovers of the
[21:53] Speaker 2: empty tomb. According to Matthew, it is said the discoverers
[21:59] Speaker 2: were Mary Magdalene and another Mary Mark says that they
[22:07] Speaker 2: were were Mary Magdalene Marry the mother of James and Salome,
[22:17] Speaker 2: and then Luke claims Mary Magdalene Joanna Marry the mother
[22:23] Speaker 2: of James and others, and of course John focuses solely
[22:29] Speaker 2: on Mary Magdalene. Now, if you are to provide a
[22:35] Speaker 2: defensible argument against this kind of an assertion, I think
[22:41] Speaker 2: it's first hopeful to point out that the four accounts
[22:47] Speaker 2: are complementary rather than contradictory. They compliment one another. You know,
[22:55] Speaker 2: if John had stipulated that Mary Magdalene was the only
[23:02] Speaker 2: female to discover the empty tomb, and the other gospels
[23:07] Speaker 2: claimed that more than one woman was involved, well then
[23:12] Speaker 2: we would be faced with an obvious contradiction. Instead, the
[23:18] Speaker 2: complimentary details that the four gospel writers provide simply serve
[23:26] Speaker 2: to flesh out, as Paul Harvey used to say, the
[23:31] Speaker 2: rest of the story. Credible scholars they always look for
[23:38] Speaker 2: a reliable courset of facts because they're trying to validate
[23:44] Speaker 2: historical accounts. So they look at these facts, and that
[23:49] Speaker 2: reliable corset validates the accounts. If each of the gospel
[23:53] Speaker 2: writers presented exactly the same secondary details in exactly the
[23:58] Speaker 2: same manner. Well, the critic would dismiss their accounts, and
[24:02] Speaker 2: probably quite rightly, on the basis of collusion. But that's
[24:06] Speaker 2: not what we have. Instead, the Gospels provide unique yet
[24:13] Speaker 2: mutually consistent perspectives on the events that they chronicle, and
[24:19] Speaker 2: thus today a consensus of credible scholars consider the courseet
[24:25] Speaker 2: of facts presented by the Gospel writers to be authentic, reliable,
[24:32] Speaker 2: and the unique perspectives provided by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
[24:35] Speaker 2: John preclude the possibility of collusion. I love this from
[24:45] Speaker 2: an apologetic standpoint, because again we're not making an apology,
[24:49] Speaker 2: we're making a defense of the faith once for all,
[24:53] Speaker 2: delivered to the Saints. And when we talk about something
[24:57] Speaker 2: like Poem Sunday, we want to know that what we
[25:02] Speaker 2: find in God's Word is his historic and evidential. And
[25:07] Speaker 2: thus we hold to the Palm Sunday celebration not in
[25:12] Speaker 2: blind faith, but rather faith founded on a refutable fact.
[25:18] Speaker 2: How firm a foundation the Saints of the Lord is
[25:22] Speaker 2: laid for your faith in His excellent Word. Well, thanks
[25:28] Speaker 2: for tuning in to this special edition of the Bible

[25:50] Speaker 2: we have the greatest of all celebrations, the celebration of
[25:53] Speaker 2: Easter or Pasca.
[25:55] Speaker 4: Will we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, which ensures
[25:59] Speaker 4: that we two will rise from the dead one day, immortal, imperishable, incorruptible.
