[0:07] Speaker 1: You're just in time for the best of the Bible.
[0:09] Speaker 1: Answer Man broadcast with Hank Canagraph, the radio outreach of
[0:13] Speaker 1: the Christian Research Institute. Our purpose here at CRII is
[0:18] Speaker 1: to equip Christians to pursue sound doctrine, to discern truth
[0:22] Speaker 1: and error, and to become faithful disciples of Christ because
[0:26] Speaker 1: life and truth matter. For more information, to order resources
[0:31] Speaker 1: or donate, call eight eight eight seven thousand CROI or
[0:36] Speaker 1: go online to equip dot org. That's equip dot org.
[0:42] Speaker 1: The following program was pre recorded. Now here's the President
[0:47] Speaker 1: of the Christian Research Institute, Hank Canagraph.
[0:50] Speaker 2: Thank you very much your ind You do you believe
[0:54] Speaker 2: in hell? It's a serious question. And before we go
[0:59] Speaker 2: to our callers today, a couple of reflections on the
[1:03] Speaker 2: rhetoric behind refutations of hell. And these refutations are all
[1:11] Speaker 2: too common today, the gospel of a second chance after death, annihilationism, universalism,
[1:25] Speaker 2: common sense in our day has given way to credulity.
[1:32] Speaker 2: Peter Kreft made that point eloquently. He said that behind
[1:39] Speaker 2: the rhetoric is a dying but still dominant humanism, a
[1:46] Speaker 2: faith in man despite Auschwitz, Hiroshima, the Gulag, and jonestown.
[1:57] Speaker 2: We're still shocked when we hear about such things. Previous
[2:03] Speaker 2: generations were not why because they believed in evil. Common
[2:11] Speaker 2: sense distinctions between good and evil have not only been
[2:16] Speaker 2: blurred by the culture, they have virtually been obliterated, which
[2:24] Speaker 2: is precisely why Eastern religions have become politically correct and
[2:29] Speaker 2: popular in Western regions. In Eastern religions, the individual and
[2:37] Speaker 2: his terrible burden of responsibility and freedom are removed. We
[2:44] Speaker 2: think of ourselves as having progressed in our appreciation of
[2:49] Speaker 2: the value of love. To it, love wins. We think
[2:54] Speaker 2: of love as the rival of justice, and forget the
[3:01] Speaker 2: necessity of justice. Justice without love is hardness of heart,
[3:12] Speaker 2: but love without justice is nothing more than softness of head.
[3:19] Speaker 2: Common sense dictates that without hell, there's no need for
[3:26] Speaker 2: a savior. Little needs to be said about the absurdity
[3:33] Speaker 2: of suggesting that the Creator would suffer more than the
[3:38] Speaker 2: cumulative sufferings of all of humankind if there were no
[3:42] Speaker 2: hell to save us from. Without hell, there's no need
[3:49] Speaker 2: for salvation. Without salvation, there is no need for a sacrifice,
[3:58] Speaker 2: and without sacrifice, there's no need for a savior. As
[4:04] Speaker 2: much as we might wish that all will be saved.
[4:11] Speaker 2: Common sense precludes the possibility. I love what C. S.
[4:16] Speaker 2: Lewis once said. He said he would pay any price
[4:21] Speaker 2: to be able to truthfully say all will be saved.
[4:27] Speaker 2: But reason retorts without their will or with it? If
[4:34] Speaker 2: I say without their will, I at once perceive a contradiction.
[4:41] Speaker 2: How can the supreme voluntary act of self surrender be involuntary?
[4:49] Speaker 2: And if, on the other hand, I say with their will,
[4:53] Speaker 2: my reason replies, how if they will not give in? Ultimately,
[5:02] Speaker 2: there are only two kinds of people in the end,
[5:06] Speaker 2: those who say to God, thy will be done, and
[5:10] Speaker 2: those to whom God says, in the end, thy will
[5:15] Speaker 2: be done. All that are in hell, or more correctly stated,
[5:21] Speaker 2: all who will be in hell choose it. Without that
[5:28] Speaker 2: self choice, there could be no hell. No soul that
[5:36] Speaker 2: seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those
[5:43] Speaker 2: who seek find to those who knock, the door to
[5:50] Speaker 2: Heaven is opened. We have sort of opted for well,
[5:57] Speaker 2: a kinder, gentler religion, but not one that corresponds to scripture.
[6:05] Speaker 2: Preachers today prefer to dwell in more uplifting themes. Hell
[6:10] Speaker 2: has all but disappeared, and no one seems to have noticed.
[6:15] Speaker 2: We've noticed, and we're driving you back to a biblical worldview.
[6:22] Speaker 2: First up today, Becky, she's listening in Virginia.
[6:24] Speaker 3: Hi Becky, Hi Hank, Thanks for taking my call.
[6:28] Speaker 2: Pleasure.
[6:30] Speaker 3: So, I was just wondering if you are familiar with
[6:33] Speaker 3: the Presbyterian Church of America's believe that there are ones
[6:39] Speaker 3: who are created for destruction. Not quite sure, but for
[6:44] Speaker 3: ethnical Pharaoh back in the day of Moses would be
[6:48] Speaker 3: considered one of those who created for destruction. Not angelic,
[6:52] Speaker 3: but human, and created for destruction to deceive us too.
[6:58] Speaker 3: The only the only ones on the whare our demonic
[7:01] Speaker 3: angels God has cast out of heaven.
[7:05] Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I mean this is the PCA position because
[7:09] Speaker 2: the PCA, the Presbyterian Church in America, which was an
[7:13] Speaker 2: offshoot of the PCUSA which became too liberal, and a
[7:17] Speaker 2: lot of evangelicals moved out and formed the PCA denomination,
[7:22] Speaker 2: a thoroughly orthodox denomination, by the way, a denomination in
[7:27] Speaker 2: which we find some incredible evangelicals who have made a
[7:32] Speaker 2: transcendent difference in our time. So it is a denomination
[7:36] Speaker 2: that I greatly cherish is having an impact on our
[7:40] Speaker 2: generation in a very significant way, But the PCA position
[7:46] Speaker 2: is Calvinistic, and the Calvinistic position is that Paul teaches
[7:52] Speaker 2: us that the ruin of the wicked is not only
[7:54] Speaker 2: foreseen by the Lord, but also ordained by his counsel
[7:59] Speaker 2: and his will. Not only the destruction of the wicked
[8:03] Speaker 2: is fore known, but that the wicked themselves have been
[8:06] Speaker 2: created for this very end that they may perish. So,
[8:12] Speaker 2: in that view, people are created who are doomed from
[8:17] Speaker 2: the womb to certain destruction. This is one of the
[8:21] Speaker 2: views within the pale of Orthodoxy, but certainly not the
[8:24] Speaker 2: only view, and it's one that we have spent a
[8:27] Speaker 2: good deal debating in a great number of forms, including
[8:31] Speaker 2: the Christian Research Journal, where you can find a debate
[8:35] Speaker 2: between an evangelical Calvinist and an evangelical non Calvinist. And
[8:41] Speaker 2: I think what's great about the debate is it drives
[8:43] Speaker 2: you back into the Word of God so that you
[8:45] Speaker 2: can take the passages and the arguments and draw your
[8:50] Speaker 2: own conclusion by testing them in light of the infallible
[8:54] Speaker 2: repository for redemptive revelation.
[8:57] Speaker 3: Okay, so would you agree Pharaoh would be one of
[9:00] Speaker 3: those as an example who was created for destruction?
[9:05] Speaker 2: Well, yes, and no, I mean, I wouldn't put it
[9:08] Speaker 2: exactly like that. Certainly Pharaoh was prepared for destruction, but
[9:14] Speaker 2: why that's what he wanted. Every time God gave him
[9:19] Speaker 2: a chance to repent, he hardened his heart. So there's
[9:24] Speaker 2: a sense in which we can, on the basis of
[9:27] Speaker 2: scripture say that God hardened Pharaoh's heart and mercy was
[9:32] Speaker 2: the occasion for the hardening. But the text also clearly
[9:36] Speaker 2: tells us that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. So this
[9:42] Speaker 2: is not fatalistic determinism or worsh yet theistic determinism. This
[9:48] Speaker 2: is mercy becoming the occasion for the hardening of Pharaoh's
[9:53] Speaker 2: heart because God continually withdrew the plague and every time
[10:00] Speaker 2: Pharaoh responds in disobedience, and then God withdraws the play
[10:05] Speaker 2: again again Pharaoh responds and disobedience. So it is mercy
[10:10] Speaker 2: that was the occasion for the hardening of Pharaoh's heart.
[10:17] Speaker 3: Okay, well great, thank you for that, Hank, and I
[10:20] Speaker 3: will look more into that scripture.
[10:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, if you hang on, we can send you the article,
[10:27] Speaker 2: because a whole lot more needs to be said. And
[10:30] Speaker 2: the only thing I'll conclude with is that I like
[10:33] Speaker 2: to leave the tension at least on the show, because
[10:36] Speaker 2: I don't want to pontificate here. What I want people
[10:39] Speaker 2: to do is get a good resource like the one
[10:42] Speaker 2: I mentioned for the Christian Research Journal, so that they
[10:44] Speaker 2: can really steep themselves in the arguments themselves. You can
[10:49] Speaker 2: get this article on the internet at equipped dot org
[10:52] Speaker 2: as well.
[10:54] Speaker 3: Okay, I will certainly check it out. Thank you so much,
[10:57] Speaker 3: you got it.
[10:57] Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your call. We'll be right.

[12:16] Speaker 1: But our Lord warned that while the gate to Hell
[12:18] Speaker 1: is wide, the road to it broad, and those who
[12:21] Speaker 1: enter through it are many, the gate is narrow and
[12:24] Speaker 1: the way is hard that leads to life, and those
[12:27] Speaker 1: who find it are few. Your generous support, let's Hank

[14:51] Speaker 1: Once again, that's equip dot org once again. Here is
[15:09] Speaker 1: Hank catagraph the.
[15:10] Speaker 2: You're Indian We returned to our callers. Next up is
[15:13] Speaker 2: Keith listening on Casper Wyoming.
[15:15] Speaker 4: Hi Keith, Hey, Hank, thanks for taking my call. I
[15:19] Speaker 4: really appreciate you being able to understand that in a way,
[15:24] Speaker 4: explain that in a way we can understand it with
[15:26] Speaker 4: no theological training.
[15:27] Speaker 2: Well, thank you.
[15:29] Speaker 4: My question why we're not seeing the miracles like we're
[15:33] Speaker 4: performed in the Old and New Testament today? Why we're
[15:36] Speaker 4: not seeing those miracles today?
[15:38] Speaker 2: Remember, Jesus Christ did miracles. The apostles and the prophets
[15:42] Speaker 2: did miracles, but through that they established themselves as legitimate
[15:48] Speaker 2: apostles and prophets. And of course Jesus by his resurrection
[15:52] Speaker 2: demonstrated that he was God in human flesh. So we
[15:56] Speaker 2: already have the testimony, and we can refer back to
[16:00] Speaker 2: a testimony that is not old and antiquated, but is
[16:04] Speaker 2: ever new and vibrant and rich. The Bible is not
[16:09] Speaker 2: dead and dull. It's dynamic, it's alive, it's functioning, so
[16:16] Speaker 2: that what we find in the scripture is not in
[16:19] Speaker 2: the least outdated. The problem is we have become politically correct.
[16:26] Speaker 2: We've lost a true valuation of things with respect to
[16:30] Speaker 2: the nature of God, and so we now think the
[16:34] Speaker 2: Bible is outdated. We think we know better than what
[16:38] Speaker 2: the Bible says, and a typical expression of this is
[16:42] Speaker 2: same sex sexuality. When you talk about the Bible's denunciation
[16:48] Speaker 2: in this regard, people have polite exasperation etched on their
[16:53] Speaker 2: faces because from their perspective, we have moved on, we're
[16:57] Speaker 2: more enlightened. But the reality is still the reality that
[17:03] Speaker 2: God places parameters around our lives to save us from
[17:08] Speaker 2: behavior that's destructive to us. And all the evidence in
[17:12] Speaker 2: an age of scientific enlightenment does demonstrate the destructive nature
[17:17] Speaker 2: from a physiological and a psychological perspective. So the Bible
[17:21] Speaker 2: is not eerily outdated. It's actually eerily up to date
[17:26] Speaker 2: with the times. And there is certainly no normative sense
[17:32] Speaker 2: in which we can do miracles today. There's no promise
[17:36] Speaker 2: that we can do miracles today. The promise of the
[17:39] Speaker 2: Bible is quite different and that is we all get
[17:42] Speaker 2: sick and eventually we all die. The issue from a
[17:46] Speaker 2: Christian perspective is not health and wealth in this life,
[17:50] Speaker 2: but it is the resurrection of the body and the
[17:53] Speaker 2: life to come. So Christianity has never intended to give
[17:56] Speaker 2: us a peaceful way to come to terms or to
[18:00] Speaker 2: grips with the difficulties are the maladies of life, but
[18:03] Speaker 2: it gives us something far better, a way to overcome
[18:06] Speaker 2: them through the power of christ resurrection. And that's why
[18:08] Speaker 2: the main point is to live not for the now,
[18:14] Speaker 2: but to use the now for eternity.
[18:18] Speaker 4: I'd just like to thank you so much for your
[18:20] Speaker 4: time for explaining that, Hank, you got.
[18:22] Speaker 2: It, Keith, thanks for calling. And there are only three
[18:25] Speaker 2: periods in which miracles prominently manifested themselves, the time of Moses,
[18:31] Speaker 2: the time of Elijah and Elisha, and of course the
[18:34] Speaker 2: time of Christ and the Apostles. So even within biblical times,
[18:38] Speaker 2: miracles were not common, and certainly miracles are not normative today.
[18:42] Speaker 2: We're certainly not suggesting that God cannot do the miranculus,
[18:45] Speaker 2: of course he can, but we are suggesting that from
[18:49] Speaker 2: a Biblical perspective, miracles are not normative. They manifested during
[18:54] Speaker 2: the periods mentioned because there's an establishment of authority for Jesus,
[19:00] Speaker 2: for the apostles, and for the prophets. But now we
[19:03] Speaker 2: have the biblical text, and in Luke chapter sixteen, the
[19:09] Speaker 2: rich man wants to go back and warn his brothers
[19:14] Speaker 2: and the enigmatic responses they have Moses and the Prophets.
[19:19] Speaker 2: If they don't believe that, they're not going to believe
[19:21] Speaker 2: even if someone rises from the dead. So we have
[19:24] Speaker 2: all the evidence necessary. We have the infallible repository of
[19:29] Speaker 2: redemptive revelation. Want to go back to the phone lines.
[19:33] Speaker 2: Doctor Rita in Nashville, Tennessee.
[19:35] Speaker 3: Hi, Rita, Hi, Hey.
[19:37] Speaker 5: Thank you for taking my call.
[19:38] Speaker 2: You're welcome.
[19:39] Speaker 5: I had questions about Mormonism because I have a niece
[19:42] Speaker 5: of Mormon and the whole family started off that way
[19:47] Speaker 5: kind of as.
[19:48] Speaker 6: They all got out of it but her, but.
[19:50] Speaker 5: They never really talked about, you know, what really went on.
[19:55] Speaker 5: I'm just learning about it, and I say that they're
[19:58] Speaker 5: not the same type Christians that we are. What you're saying,
[20:02] Speaker 5: because their belief.
[20:05] Speaker 2: Well they're not a bit different, they're significantly different. Remember,
[20:09] Speaker 2: the founder of Mormonism taught that God himself was once
[20:13] Speaker 2: as we are now, and is an exalted man and
[20:16] Speaker 2: sits enthroned in yonder heavens. So in Mormonism, God is
[20:23] Speaker 2: God now, but he was once a man as we
[20:26] Speaker 2: are men. And the belief in Mormonism is just as
[20:31] Speaker 2: God progressed to godhood, so too we can progress to Godhood.
[20:37] Speaker 2: And I think just as seriously they teach an aberration
[20:42] Speaker 2: with respect to who Jesus Christ is. In Mormonism, he
[20:46] Speaker 2: is the spirit brother of Lucifer, who was conceived in
[20:48] Speaker 2: heaven by a celestial mother and then came in flesh
[20:53] Speaker 2: as the result of the Father having sex with the
[20:55] Speaker 2: virgin Mary. And of course their authority is not the Bible.
[20:59] Speaker 2: They believe that the Book of Mormon is the most
[21:03] Speaker 2: correct of any book on earth and the keystone to
[21:06] Speaker 2: their religion. The problem, of course, is that the Book
[21:09] Speaker 2: of Mormon has been utterly discredited by both anthropology as
[21:14] Speaker 2: well as archaeology.
[21:16] Speaker 5: Okay, I just didn't know much about it until you
[21:19] Speaker 5: start hearing about it. Like the Magic underwhere, I thought
[21:22] Speaker 5: that was something people made up until I actually seen
[21:25] Speaker 5: it on TV.
[21:26] Speaker 2: Now it's not made up at all. It is a
[21:29] Speaker 2: present practice of Mormonism.
[21:31] Speaker 5: Okay, well, I'm learning about it. I just never I
[21:34] Speaker 5: just thought some of the stuff was made up, like
[21:36] Speaker 5: about the planets and all that kind of stuff. It's
[21:39] Speaker 5: just kind of shocking then that my niece is so
[21:42] Speaker 5: sweet that she I just can't believe that she believes it,
[21:45] Speaker 5: and it's just kind of shocking to me. Okay, but
[21:48] Speaker 5: thank you.
[21:49] Speaker 2: You got it. And we have some very helpful literature
[21:53] Speaker 2: of the Christian Research Institute with respect of Mormonism, including
[21:57] Speaker 2: flip chart titled Memorable Keys to the Mormon Moro. It's
[22:01] Speaker 2: four by six, it's laminated. You can put in a
[22:03] Speaker 2: pocket or a purse, and it gives you the aberrations
[22:06] Speaker 2: of Mormonism in a memorable format so that you can
[22:09] Speaker 2: use them as springboards or opportunities to share the truth
[22:13] Speaker 2: and grace and love that only Jesus Christ can bring
[22:16] Speaker 2: to the human heart. I want to go back to
[22:18] Speaker 2: the phone lines, doctor Brian. He's listening on the web
[22:22] Speaker 2: in Littleton, Colorado. Hi Brian, Hi, Ank, How are you good?
[22:26] Speaker 2: How are you?
[22:27] Speaker 6: I think there's a disagreement we have because you know,
[22:30] Speaker 6: I do believe in the Lord, but I believe the
[22:33] Speaker 6: Lord is I'm just reading from Mark twelve right here
[22:38] Speaker 6: and in the first of all, come in. It's here
[22:40] Speaker 6: all Israel, the Lord, our God is one Lord, period,
[22:44] Speaker 6: period the end. And in my understanding, I heard this
[22:50] Speaker 6: on your program. If you explain to a lady that no,
[22:53] Speaker 6: there's a second rule which states that there are also
[22:57] Speaker 6: three persons, and that doesn't where with the you know
[23:01] Speaker 6: that violates.
[23:02] Speaker 2: Rule number one, Well, actually doesn't, because there's a difference
[23:06] Speaker 2: between speaking about persons and I'm equivocating on that term
[23:10] Speaker 2: and ontology. When you're talking about the nature or essence
[23:14] Speaker 2: of God, we're talking about one God. The Bible is
[23:17] Speaker 2: not polytheistic. It's fiercely monotheistic. So the Hebrew Shamah hero Israel,
[23:24] Speaker 2: the Lord your God is one, is reiterated in the
[23:27] Speaker 2: New Testament. There's only one God by nature or essence.
[23:31] Speaker 2: So we're talking here about a category. It's ontology. When
[23:36] Speaker 2: we talk about persons.
[23:38] Speaker 6: We're talking about Wait a second, when you say category,
[23:41] Speaker 6: are you saying that there's there could be possibly a
[23:45] Speaker 6: race of gods or not or you know, No.
[23:49] Speaker 2: No I'm not you're coming to or no, that's not
[23:52] Speaker 2: where I'm coming to. What I'm saying is that there's
[23:54] Speaker 2: only one God by nature or essence. So I'm talking
[23:58] Speaker 2: philosophically about a category called ontology.
[24:03] Speaker 6: Well, yeah, that's I mean, that's like as would be
[24:06] Speaker 6: of a human nature.
[24:08] Speaker 2: No, the nature of God ontologically, the nature of God
[24:12] Speaker 2: is not the same as the nature of human beings.
[24:15] Speaker 2: But what I'm saying here is that when the Bible
[24:19] Speaker 2: says there is only one God, it's speaking of one
[24:23] Speaker 2: God by virtue of nature or essence. When the Bible
[24:29] Speaker 2: says that the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are God,
[24:35] Speaker 2: it is not saying now that there.
[24:38] Speaker 6: With no plural to it, is just the one God.
[24:41] Speaker 3: Know.
[24:42] Speaker 2: What we're talking about here is identity formed and completed
[24:46] Speaker 2: on the basis of relationships within the God. Let me
[24:50] Speaker 2: put it simply. The Bible says there's one what in
[24:54] Speaker 2: three Who's.
[24:55] Speaker 6: No, it doesn't where does it say that?
[24:57] Speaker 3: Well?
[24:58] Speaker 6: That's what?
[24:59] Speaker 3: Where?
[25:00] Speaker 2: Well, let me tell you the Bible says.
[25:02] Speaker 6: Let me just clarify this for you.
[25:04] Speaker 2: Okay, you got a hurry because we're almost out of time.
[25:07] Speaker 6: If there is more than one person's Jesus Christ would
[25:11] Speaker 6: had an opportunity to say it right then and there
[25:13] Speaker 6: in Mark twelve.
[25:15] Speaker 2: Well, Jesus did say it.
[25:16] Speaker 6: He said the Father and stead in that one essence,
[25:19] Speaker 6: there's three persons, and blah blah blah blah. He do
[25:22] Speaker 6: he kill it clearly.
[25:23] Speaker 2: He says, the Father and Son are two distinct witnesses
[25:27] Speaker 2: and two distinct judges. So he makes a distinction between
[25:31] Speaker 2: himself and the Father. So the trinity simply says this
[25:35] Speaker 2: that there's one God. The Bible communicates clearly that Jesus
[25:40] Speaker 2: is God, the Father's God, and the Holy Spirit is God.
[25:42] Speaker 2: And the Bible clearly communicates that Father, Son, and Holy
[25:45] Speaker 2: Spirit are eternally distinct. You can see this in the Annunciation.
[25:50] Speaker 2: You can see this in the baptism of Jesus Christ,
[25:52] Speaker 2: you can see it in the Great Commission. So one
[25:55] Speaker 2: God revealed in three persons, person having to do with identity,
[26:00] Speaker 2: formed and completed on the basis of relationships within the Godhead,
[26:04] Speaker 2: and they're eternally distinct. So trinity is just a word
[26:08] Speaker 2: that codifies what is taught in scripture. Out of time
