[0:07] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Bible answer Man broadcast with your host,
[0:11] Speaker 1: Hank Hannigraph. The Bible answer Man is the radio ministry
[0:14] Speaker 1: of the Christian Research Institute designed to equip believers to
[0:18] Speaker 1: defend their faith and become true disciples of the Lord
[0:22] Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, because life and truth matter. Our phone number
[0:27] Speaker 1: is eight eight eight seven thousand CRII. You can find
[0:31] Speaker 1: us on the internet at equip dot org. The following
[0:34] Speaker 1: program was pre recorded, and now to begin today's broadcast,
[0:39] Speaker 1: here's Hank Hanagraph.
[0:41] Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Randy, and we'll get to your
[0:42] Speaker 2: questions in just a moment. I want to say something
[0:46] Speaker 2: about the Book of Knowledge and the Book of Nature.
[0:52] Speaker 2: The Bible commences with the immortal Words. In the beginning,
[0:56] Speaker 2: God created the heavens and the earth, and then continues
[1:01] Speaker 2: with the revelation that the God who created the universe
[1:08] Speaker 2: created humankind in his image, in his likeness, and as such,
[1:14] Speaker 2: humanity in a finite way, shares God's communicable attributes personality, morality, rationality,
[1:25] Speaker 2: and those attributes equip us as human beings to carry
[1:30] Speaker 2: out what's called the cultural mandate Biblically, it's the idea
[1:38] Speaker 2: to rule creation in such a way that it would
[1:42] Speaker 2: come to realize its full potential. At first blush, that
[1:49] Speaker 2: might not sound earthshaking, but upon closer examination, it's transformational.
[1:59] Speaker 2: Greek thinkers had little concept of forward progress. Aristotle believed
[2:05] Speaker 2: himself to be living during the climax of progress, but
[2:10] Speaker 2: not Augustine, who held to the biblical maxim that it's
[2:16] Speaker 2: the glory of God to conceal a matter. To search
[2:20] Speaker 2: out the matter, there's the glory of kings. To search
[2:25] Speaker 2: out that which God has concealed, of course, involves the
[2:30] Speaker 2: faculty of reason. Reason itself, however, is singularly insufficient. While
[2:38] Speaker 2: truth may be comprehended by reason, the fountain head of
[2:43] Speaker 2: truth is revelation, and without such divine disclosure we are
[2:51] Speaker 2: but blind men grasping at the trunk of the proverbial elephant.
[2:59] Speaker 2: So why suppose a woman to be the equal, much
[3:02] Speaker 2: less the superior, of a man? The answer revelation. Reason
[3:11] Speaker 2: without revelation led scientists to postulate that blacks are inferior
[3:18] Speaker 2: to whites and that women are inferior to men, but
[3:23] Speaker 2: never reason informed by revelation. As God's Book of Knowledge reveals,
[3:31] Speaker 2: we are created in the imago day, and that makes
[3:38] Speaker 2: all the difference in the world. The Imago day ensures
[3:42] Speaker 2: a down syndrome child is afforded the same dignity given
[3:46] Speaker 2: to a distinguished scientist. Amago Darwin leads in quite an
[3:54] Speaker 2: opposite direction. For Neo Darwinians like Richard Dawkins, the Imago
[4:01] Speaker 2: day is little more than a troublesome myth. As such,
[4:07] Speaker 2: a human being has no more intrinsic value than a banana,
[4:11] Speaker 2: Nor is humanity the crowning jewel of God's creation in time.
[4:17] Speaker 2: At least from their perspective, a far more sophisticated life
[4:21] Speaker 2: form will supplant humankind courtesy of the evolutionary paradigm. As
[4:29] Speaker 2: hippos transitioned into wales, well, it is supposed that humans
[4:35] Speaker 2: will inevitably transition into whatever. The fact that there is
[4:40] Speaker 2: scant fossil evidence for this fundamentalist fervor seems of little consequence,
[4:47] Speaker 2: nor is molecular evidence to the contrary a stumbling block.
[4:52] Speaker 2: His mind being darkened, Dawkens blindly swallows an ocean skin
[5:01] Speaker 2: becomes impermeable to water. Eye protection mechanisms appear like magic,
[5:10] Speaker 2: as do changes in the brain. A respiratory system that
[5:14] Speaker 2: prevents the bends and a lactation system, sonar, and so on,
[5:20] Speaker 2: and he Dawkens, enamored by reason without revelation, has long
[5:25] Speaker 2: ago departed the world of science and waded into the
[5:29] Speaker 2: illusory land of science fiction. The problem for Dawkins is
[5:35] Speaker 2: that reason without revelation has left him impotent in the
[5:39] Speaker 2: quest to read the Book of Nature for all its worth. Likewise,
[5:43] Speaker 2: he's ill equipped to read God's Book of Knowledge. His
[5:48] Speaker 2: fundamentalist reading scripture is simply breathtaking, failing to recognize that
[5:54] Speaker 2: scripture is inspired literature, but literature. Nonetheless, he persists in
[6:00] Speaker 2: pressing the language of the Biblical text into a wooden
[6:03] Speaker 2: literal labyrinth. Even worse, he perpetuates the false dichotomy between
[6:10] Speaker 2: faith and reason. In truth, Western civilization was born out
[6:18] Speaker 2: of a reasonable faith, and because this is so, its
[6:23] Speaker 2: revelations rightfully illumine and elucidate human reason. We must be
[6:32] Speaker 2: potent in our ability to read the Book of Nature
[6:35] Speaker 2: for all its worth. We must be equipped as well
[6:41] Speaker 2: to read God's Book of Knowledge. And we must recognize
[6:46] Speaker 2: the reality that if we do not know how to
[6:50] Speaker 2: read the Bible for all it's worth, if we don't
[6:55] Speaker 2: understand special revelation, we are going to be impotent in
[6:59] Speaker 2: understanding natural revelation, God's eternal power, his divine nature being
[7:08] Speaker 2: clearly seen, being understood by that which has been made,
[7:12] Speaker 2: so that we are without excuse. Today, we often marginalize
[7:19] Speaker 2: ourselves as Christians in the creation evolution debate, on the
[7:25] Speaker 2: one hand, because we do not recognize our need to
[7:29] Speaker 2: read the Book of Nature for all its worth. On
[7:32] Speaker 2: the other hand, because we fail to recognize how important
[7:38] Speaker 2: it is for us not only to say that the
[7:40] Speaker 2: Bible is God's Word, but to answer the attendant question,
[7:45] Speaker 2: if it is, how do we read it for all
[7:47] Speaker 2: its worth? We'll go right to the phone lines. Albert
[7:50] Speaker 2: First in Anderson, California, Hi, Albert, I.
[7:54] Speaker 3: Wanted to ask you what you believe the best English
[7:58] Speaker 3: translation of the Bible is.
[8:00] Speaker 2: Well. I think we are blessed with the wealth of
[8:03] Speaker 2: great Bible translations, and I use a variety of Bible
[8:08] Speaker 2: translations both for my own personal study, for personal edification,
[8:14] Speaker 2: for memorization, for mining the Word of God for all
[8:19] Speaker 2: it's worth from meditating on the word. If you want
[8:22] Speaker 2: a good thought for thought translation, I think the NIV
[8:27] Speaker 2: is a tremendous Bible in that regard. If you want
[8:31] Speaker 2: a good word for word translation. The NESB is a
[8:36] Speaker 2: great translation, But which one would you say is more
[8:39] Speaker 2: faithful to the original Greek and Hebrew. Well, here's the point.
[8:43] Speaker 2: All of the modern translations have great benefits over the
[8:47] Speaker 2: older translations because of a number of factors. Number one,
[8:52] Speaker 2: the evolution of language is accounted for. So if you
[8:55] Speaker 2: go to Elizabethan English and they talked about gay clothing,
[8:59] Speaker 2: that it now given to us as fine clothing. Or
[9:04] Speaker 2: if you have Paul, from thence he fetched a compass.
[9:09] Speaker 2: That is a language that we don't understand. But the
[9:12] Speaker 2: newer translations retranslate that in a way that's true to
[9:18] Speaker 2: the original intent, taking the words from one language to
[9:22] Speaker 2: a receptor language, and they translate that. From thence he
[9:26] Speaker 2: proceeded in a circular course. The second factor is our
[9:31] Speaker 2: progress in the knowledge and understanding of original Biblical languages.
[9:35] Speaker 2: If you go to the older translations, let's say the
[9:38] Speaker 2: King James version, which has withstood the test of time
[9:41] Speaker 2: for a long time, there were some misunderstandings of words.
[9:46] Speaker 2: Those misunderstandings have been cleared up as a result of
[9:50] Speaker 2: a discipline called archaeology. And the third factor, I think
[9:54] Speaker 2: that we have to take into consideration is the discovery
[9:57] Speaker 2: of earlier and better manuscripts, which also has enhanced what
[10:03] Speaker 2: is called the tenacity of the text, which is to say,
[10:06] Speaker 2: the more manuscripts we have, the better we can see
[10:09] Speaker 2: the autograph, because out of the manuscript evidence emerges the
[10:15] Speaker 2: autograph of scripture. So the newer translations, the ones I mentioned,
[10:20] Speaker 2: the New King James Version, the NASB, the New American
[10:24] Speaker 2: Standard Version of the NIV, the New International Version, all
[10:28] Speaker 2: are great translations. So we live in an epic of
[10:31] Speaker 2: time where we are blessed by tremendous translations of God's word.
[10:37] Speaker 2: And sometimes we suppose that a word for word translation
[10:40] Speaker 2: is best, and that is not necessarily the case. For example,
[10:44] Speaker 2: sometimes going thought for thought is a better way of
[10:50] Speaker 2: communicating the original intent. And if you speak foreign languages,
[10:54] Speaker 2: of course you know that immediately. I happen to have
[10:57] Speaker 2: been born in Holland, and if I'm trying to communicate
[11:00] Speaker 2: something from Dutch to English, a thought for thought communication
[11:04] Speaker 2: oftentimes does a much better job than trying to do
[11:07] Speaker 2: it word for work. We'll be right back with more
[11:09] Speaker 2: of your questions on the other side of the break,
[11:11] Speaker 2: so please don't touch that dial.

[13:03] Speaker 1: a war going on, not just on traditional morality, civility,
[13:07] Speaker 1: and decency, but even more fundamentally on historic notions of truth.
[13:12] Speaker 1: And the enemy isn't just the onslaught of fake news,
[13:15] Speaker 1: facilitated by a post truth culture and turbocharged by growing
[13:18] Speaker 1: legions of ideological spind doctors. Note the real enemies of
[13:22] Speaker 1: truth range from postmodernist convictions that there is no objective

[15:10] Speaker 2: Thanks very much, Randy, and let's go right back to
[15:12] Speaker 2: our phone callers. Talk next to Richard listening in Columbus, Ohio.
[15:17] Speaker 4: Hi, Richard, Hello, how are you today?
[15:19] Speaker 2: I'm good? How are you real good?
[15:21] Speaker 4: I think I got a quick question for you here.
[15:25] Speaker 4: I have a very close lady friend who may soon
[15:28] Speaker 4: be a fiancee. We're both Christians, both raised Christians. Years ago,
[15:33] Speaker 4: she was married and divorce. She was in a marriage
[15:36] Speaker 4: that was emotional and verbal and psychological and in the
[15:40] Speaker 4: end even physically abusive. And the question is eligibility for remarriage,
[15:46] Speaker 4: and it's bothering her considerably. And I would like to
[15:49] Speaker 4: get your opinion.
[15:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is something that should ultimately be
[15:52] Speaker 2: settled in the confines of a healthy, well balanced church,
[15:55] Speaker 2: where a pastor and people that know you and know
[15:59] Speaker 2: your potential wife also know all the details. But here's
[16:04] Speaker 2: the basic point, And this was made in an article
[16:06] Speaker 2: written by Michael Ross. He makes the point that adultery
[16:10] Speaker 2: and wilful desertion are obvious and potentially irreparable violations of
[16:16] Speaker 2: covenant love. But then he says it would seem that
[16:20] Speaker 2: there are other sins against marriage that could rise to
[16:26] Speaker 2: the same level of covenant unfaithfulness as adultery and desertion,
[16:32] Speaker 2: and he includes in the list physical abuse, unrepentant addiction
[16:39] Speaker 2: to pornography, engagement and occult activities, and other spiritual actions
[16:45] Speaker 2: harmful to the family, and then says it could be
[16:49] Speaker 2: argued that these violations of the marriage Covenant may constitute
[16:54] Speaker 2: biblical grounds for divorce, even though they are not specifically
[16:58] Speaker 2: named as such in the New Testament. The reason I
[17:03] Speaker 2: say this has to be settled, however, in a healthy,
[17:06] Speaker 2: well balanced church, is that it took four partners to
[17:10] Speaker 2: contract a marriage, and likewise, it should take four partners
[17:16] Speaker 2: to dissolve a marriage. And I think in terms of remarriage,
[17:22] Speaker 2: the same principle applies, and therefore I would want a
[17:27] Speaker 2: pastor to be involved in the process. Not just the state,
[17:31] Speaker 2: not just the potential husband and wife, but all four
[17:34] Speaker 2: parties need to be involved in the process. So some
[17:37] Speaker 2: counseling in a healthy, well balanced church I think would
[17:41] Speaker 2: help resolve the issue. But I do think, as Michael
[17:44] Speaker 2: Ross has correctly pointed out in this article, which is
[17:47] Speaker 2: available online at equipped dot org, that there are other
[17:51] Speaker 2: factors that can be the equivalent of desertion or adultery.
[17:58] Speaker 4: Well, thank you kindly, you hit the nail on the head,
[18:00] Speaker 4: and we are actually pursuing that direction. Also, we would
[18:04] Speaker 4: not consider any further direction without having pastors involved. But
[18:08] Speaker 4: you really hit the nail right in the head, and
[18:10] Speaker 4: I want to thank.
[18:11] Speaker 2: You very much you got. It is my pleasure. God
[18:14] Speaker 2: bless you. Ronaldo. Next in ames Iowa, Hi, Ronaldo, I
[18:20] Speaker 2: hank it is truly.
[18:21] Speaker 3: An honor to certainly be here speaking with such amount
[18:26] Speaker 3: of God that is passionate and knowledge but the worst.
[18:31] Speaker 2: So I thank you well, thank you for your encouragement.
[18:35] Speaker 1: Hi.
[18:35] Speaker 3: Well, my question, My question is it has been quite
[18:39] Speaker 3: frustrating to see several of my close family members who
[18:43] Speaker 3: have actually abandoned their Christian faith and converted to the
[18:47] Speaker 3: Jehovah Witness religion. And I guess hearing you previously, you
[18:55] Speaker 3: kind of talk that perhaps one of the first things
[18:59] Speaker 3: to perhaps talk about is really about the deity of Christ.
[19:03] Speaker 3: And when I guess when I speak with my brothers
[19:07] Speaker 3: with respect to that, they bring up the aspect of collisions,
[19:12] Speaker 3: and they speak as Jesus being a creation of God,
[19:14] Speaker 3: and also they quote the Gospels and which to speak
[19:19] Speaker 3: of quoting Jesus as referring as God being greater than him,
[19:25] Speaker 3: and just really I would like to hear your your
[19:29] Speaker 3: perspective on that. And I guess a small part of
[19:33] Speaker 3: that as well would be I've heard you speak of
[19:36] Speaker 3: before in terms of the deity or the Trinity and
[19:41] Speaker 3: you utilize that it's something that we could apprehend but
[19:45] Speaker 3: not necessarily comprehend. And I've never understood the difference between
[19:51] Speaker 3: the two, because when I look at it in the dictionary,
[19:54] Speaker 3: it's defined it as understands. So if you could actually clarify.
[20:01] Speaker 2: Well in terms of comprehend apprehend Comprehending is to be
[20:06] Speaker 2: able to fully understand. Apprehending is to be able to
[20:12] Speaker 2: identify in the scripture, So, for example, I apprehend in
[20:19] Speaker 2: scripture that there's only one God. I also apprehend, by
[20:24] Speaker 2: reading the scripture that the Father is God, the Son
[20:26] Speaker 2: is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. I further
[20:30] Speaker 2: apprehend in the scripture that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
[20:34] Speaker 2: are eternally distinct. Now, while I apprehend that because scripture
[20:39] Speaker 2: communicates that, I do not fully comprehend that because I
[20:46] Speaker 2: am finite, God is infinite, and God here has not
[20:50] Speaker 2: presented in scripture a contradiction, but he has certainly presented
[20:56] Speaker 2: something that is beyond my ken as far as Colossians
[21:00] Speaker 2: is concerned. Colossians actually underscores the supremacy of Jesus Christ
[21:07] Speaker 2: over all things, and because of that, the Jehovah's witnesses,
[21:12] Speaker 2: recognizing the import of the text itself. They've inserted words
[21:19] Speaker 2: gratuitously into the text. Those words are the words other
[21:25] Speaker 2: four times in the space of a few verses, because
[21:30] Speaker 2: you have the supremacy of Christ underscored. Beginning in Colossians
[21:36] Speaker 2: one point fifteen, where Christ is described as the image
[21:39] Speaker 2: of the invisible God, the first born over all creation,
[21:46] Speaker 2: and then the text goes on to say that for
[21:49] Speaker 2: him all things were created, things in heaven on earth,
[21:57] Speaker 2: visible invisible thrones, power, rulers, authorities. All things were created
[22:03] Speaker 2: by him, and for him he is before all things,
[22:10] Speaker 2: and in him all things hold together. The point being
[22:15] Speaker 2: that Jesus Christ is the one who spoke in the
[22:18] Speaker 2: universe leapt into existence, in distinction from the Jehovah's witness
[22:24] Speaker 2: position that Jesus Christ was created by God and after
[22:28] Speaker 2: his creation becomes a junior partner in the creation of
[22:34] Speaker 2: all other things. Now, the point here is that there's
[22:38] Speaker 2: no warrant whatsoever to insert the word other. And this
[22:44] Speaker 2: is not simply a linguistic debate. If you look at
[22:48] Speaker 2: the panoply of scripture, you see over and over again
[22:53] Speaker 2: that Jesus Christ is declared to be God by the Bible.
[22:59] Speaker 2: None only so, but the credentials of Christ back up
[23:04] Speaker 2: his claim to deity, which is to say, what he
[23:07] Speaker 2: did demonstrates who he was. So you have Jesus claiming
[23:13] Speaker 2: that he is God, you have the Bible claiming that
[23:18] Speaker 2: he is God, and you have the credentials of Christ
[23:22] Speaker 2: backing up that claim. Now moreover, there are times in
[23:27] Speaker 2: which Jesus Christ speaks from the perspective of theanthropist the
[23:31] Speaker 2: god man, which is what theanthropist means. It means the
[23:34] Speaker 2: god man Jesus Christ in the incarnation, incarnation having to
[23:40] Speaker 2: do with taking on flesh, and Jesus takes on as
[23:44] Speaker 2: or flesh. And in the incarnation, then Jesus Christ voluntarily
[23:52] Speaker 2: takes on the limitations of humanity without divesting himself of
[23:57] Speaker 2: a single attribute of deity. Well what does that mean.
[24:01] Speaker 2: It means that Jesus Christ takes on the role of
[24:06] Speaker 2: a servant and therefore subjugates his divine prerogatives to the Father. Thus,
[24:15] Speaker 2: there are times when Christ, speaking from the perspective of
[24:20] Speaker 2: his humanity, speaks in the form of limitations. And that
[24:26] Speaker 2: is what so often is pounced upon by those who
[24:30] Speaker 2: do not know how to read the Bible. For all
[24:32] Speaker 2: it's worth so recognizing the essentials gives us a grid
[24:39] Speaker 2: by which we are not going to be confused by
[24:43] Speaker 2: the confabulations of cultists who are not using the Bible,
[24:49] Speaker 2: but abusing the Bible because they have their own predilections
[24:53] Speaker 2: that they are bent on communicating. And this is the
[24:56] Speaker 2: thing that happens to it. Jehovah's witness, by the way,
[24:58] Speaker 2: Jehovah's witness can run very well on a little track
[25:03] Speaker 2: because they've been taught this little track, But once you
[25:06] Speaker 2: get them off of that little track into the broader
[25:10] Speaker 2: purview of the scriptures, they become lost very quickly. And
[25:14] Speaker 2: so I think it is incumbent for you to become
[25:17] Speaker 2: so familiar first with the truth that when the deviation
