[1:26] Speaker 3: Hi, how are you.
[1:28] Speaker 2: I'm good? How are you?
[1:29] Speaker 3: I'm doing well? Listen. I received an email today and
[1:34] Speaker 3: in this email was a link with a debate between
[1:38] Speaker 3: a mister Bernard I think in a doctor Cook in
[1:40] Speaker 3: regards to one as versus the Trinity. It was very
[1:43] Speaker 3: confusing for me because I've always felt that I believed
[1:46] Speaker 3: in the trinity, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit,
[1:50] Speaker 3: but I also believe that those three are one, and
[1:53] Speaker 3: they don't exist independent of each other, and they are
[1:57] Speaker 3: all God. And so it was very fusing because there
[2:00] Speaker 3: were different thoughts on that, and I was just wondering
[2:02] Speaker 3: if you've had any insight on that, or if there's
[2:06] Speaker 3: anything in the Bible that would help me to understand
[2:08] Speaker 3: that better.
[2:09] Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, let's go through this step by step because
[2:12] Speaker 2: this has to do with the nature of God, and
[2:15] Speaker 2: virtually every single theological heresy begins with a misconception of
[2:19] Speaker 2: the nature of God. So we start with the first premise,
[2:23] Speaker 2: and that premise is this, there's only one God. Can
[2:26] Speaker 2: you agree with that? Yes, So if you read through
[2:28] Speaker 2: the Bible, you recognize that there's only one God. So
[2:31] Speaker 2: we don't believe in polytheism. We don't believe that a
[2:34] Speaker 2: lot of gods. We don't believe that we can become God.
[2:37] Speaker 2: We believe that there's only one God. The Bible is
[2:41] Speaker 2: replete with evidence that there is only one God. No
[2:46] Speaker 2: gods were made before me, No God will be made
[2:49] Speaker 2: after me, says God. There is only one God. So
[2:52] Speaker 2: we begin with that premise. The second premise is this,
[2:55] Speaker 2: according to the Bible, the Father is God, the Son
[3:00] Speaker 2: is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Is that correct?
[3:05] Speaker 2: I mean, if you read the Bible, you hear the
[3:08] Speaker 2: Father being referred to as God, you hear the Son
[3:12] Speaker 2: being referred to as God, and you read that the
[3:15] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit is referred to as God. Fair enough, yes, okay.
[3:21] Speaker 2: And that leads to the third premise, which is that Father, Son,
[3:25] Speaker 2: and Holy Spirit are eternally distinct, which is to say,
[3:30] Speaker 2: Jesus himself made a statement by what she said, the
[3:35] Speaker 2: Father and Son are two distinct witnesses and two distinct judges.
[3:42] Speaker 2: So there's an object subject distinction between the Father and
[3:46] Speaker 2: the Son, according to the words of Jesus Christ himself.
[3:49] Speaker 2: So we cannot presume that the Father became the son
[3:54] Speaker 2: and the son became the Holy Spirit, but rather that
[3:58] Speaker 2: there are eternal subject object distinctions between Father, Son and
[4:04] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. So the three premises then are one God,
[4:10] Speaker 2: father Son, and Holy Spirit are God. And thirdly, father
[4:15] Speaker 2: Son and Holy Spirit are eternally distinct. The word that
[4:20] Speaker 2: we use to codify that is trinity. Now, trinity is
[4:23] Speaker 2: not something that we find as a word in the
[4:26] Speaker 2: Biblical text, but it is a theological word that codifies
[4:33] Speaker 2: a biblical teaching. So the biblical teaching is as I
[4:38] Speaker 2: have just communicated, and we use the word trinity as
[4:43] Speaker 2: a way of communicating that. So we say we're trinitarian.
[4:46] Speaker 2: What does that mean? Well, remember, words are not unifical.
[4:49] Speaker 2: They're equivocal to take on the meaning that we assign them,
[4:53] Speaker 2: and oftentimes a context is meaning to the word. But
[4:57] Speaker 2: we say, then we believe in one God, God revealed
[5:01] Speaker 2: in three persons who are eternally distinct, and the word
[5:05] Speaker 2: trinity codifies that concept. So that's the meaning we pour
[5:09] Speaker 2: into the word trinity.
[5:12] Speaker 3: So how can one God be eternally distinct and three
[5:16] Speaker 3: different persons.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Well, if we said, Cindy that there's one God and
[5:23] Speaker 2: there are three gods. If I said to you know, Cindy,
[5:25] Speaker 2: I believe in one God and I believe in three gods.
[5:27] Speaker 3: You would say what I would say, I believe in
[5:30] Speaker 3: one God.
[5:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, you would say that's nonsense. You're contradicting yourself. How
[5:34] Speaker 2: can you say there's one God and then say three gods.
[5:37] Speaker 2: That's an obvious contradiction, and a lot of people think
[5:41] Speaker 2: that's what's happening when we talk about the trinity. But
[5:43] Speaker 2: that's not the case because when we talk about one God,
[5:47] Speaker 2: we're talking about the nature or essence of God, sometimes
[5:52] Speaker 2: called ontology, So we're talking about one God by nature
[5:57] Speaker 2: or essence. But when we talk about about Father, Son,
[6:02] Speaker 2: and Holy Spirit being eternally distinct, we're talking about persons. Now,
[6:10] Speaker 2: let me say that even that is a bit of
[6:12] Speaker 2: an equivocation, because when we think about persons in common parlance,
[6:18] Speaker 2: we think about you, me, and someone else's persons, and
[6:21] Speaker 2: that's not what we're talking about. When we use the
[6:23] Speaker 2: word person with respect to the Trinity, we're talking about
[6:30] Speaker 2: identity that is formed and completed on the basis of
[6:34] Speaker 2: relationships within the Godhead. So we can say, according to
[6:39] Speaker 2: the Bible, the Father loves the Son and the son
[6:44] Speaker 2: loves the Father. That's a subject object distinction, or the
[6:48] Speaker 2: son was with the Father. That's a subject object distinction.
[6:53] Speaker 2: So we're speaking in terms not of ontology now, but
[6:58] Speaker 2: we're talking about personal relationships or personal distinctions within the Godhead.
[7:05] Speaker 2: So even though I cannot fully comprehend that, I can
[7:12] Speaker 2: apprehend that, which is to say, it's not a contradiction.
[7:16] Speaker 2: If I say there's one what in three who's, that's
[7:19] Speaker 2: not a contradiction. If I say there's one what in
[7:22] Speaker 2: three whats, that's a contradiction. So I'm not contradicting anything here.
[7:28] Speaker 2: This is not a logical fallacy or a logical contradiction.
[7:34] Speaker 2: But I must confess this is something that is beyond
[7:37] Speaker 2: my ken and that of anyone else talking about it.
[7:41] Speaker 2: So we can only apprehend it, we cannot fully comprehend it. Now,
[7:43] Speaker 2: why does that not bother me? Because I'm finite and
[7:47] Speaker 2: God is infinite.
[7:49] Speaker 3: Yeah, that doesn't bother me either. I like the way
[7:51] Speaker 3: you put that exactly. Yes, that I don't completely understand,
[7:55] Speaker 3: but I understand what you're saying, that there's only one
[7:59] Speaker 3: God and Father's God, son is God, Holy Spirit is God.
[8:02] Speaker 3: But they are three eternally distinct. I don't know about
[8:06] Speaker 3: persons but that kind of confuses me.
[8:08] Speaker 2: Right, we're using the word person. But remember that's why
[8:12] Speaker 2: I use this equivocal unifical concept. You know, words take
[8:17] Speaker 2: on the meaning we assign them. So in the particular
[8:20] Speaker 2: context i'm using person, I'm defining also what I mean.
[8:25] Speaker 2: I mean personal self distinctions within the Godhead. So I'm
[8:31] Speaker 2: not using person in common parlance. But remember that's the
[8:34] Speaker 2: way words always work. You use words in different ways.
[8:39] Speaker 2: I can say the word can in a lot of
[8:42] Speaker 2: different ways. I can say someone got thrown into the can,
[8:46] Speaker 2: using can in the slang fashion, talking about jail, I
[8:50] Speaker 2: can say I can do something I say I just
[8:54] Speaker 2: add a can of tuna. I mean, There's a lot
[8:56] Speaker 2: of ways in which we can use words, So the
[8:58] Speaker 2: context becomes determ But here I'm talking about persons as
[9:02] Speaker 2: three centers of consciousness within the one God.
[9:07] Speaker 3: Right, And what is the difference, if if you could
[9:10] Speaker 3: just indulge me for a second, what is the difference
[9:12] Speaker 3: between that and oneness.
[9:15] Speaker 2: Well, the oneness concept is that you have one God
[9:21] Speaker 2: revealing himself in different modes or manifestations. So the Father
[9:29] Speaker 2: becomes the Son, and the Son becomes the Holy Spirit.
[9:35] Speaker 2: We're saying no, that's wrong. It's not one God in
[9:39] Speaker 2: three different manifestations, but one God revealed in three persons
[9:44] Speaker 2: who are eternally distinct. And by the way, this is
[9:48] Speaker 2: precisely why they baptize in the name of Jesus only.
[9:53] Speaker 2: It's the idea of error beginning error. The belief that
[9:57] Speaker 2: you have to be baptized only in the name of
[10:00] Speaker 2: Jesus has led one this Pentecostalism to the further error
[10:04] Speaker 2: that Jesus is himself the Father, the Son, and the
[10:07] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. So they don't hold to one God revealed
[10:09] Speaker 2: in three persons who are eternally distinct, but to three
[10:12] Speaker 2: manifestations of one God revealed in Jesus. Okay, okay, makes sense.
[10:20] Speaker 3: It does make sense, and it just creates a question
[10:24] Speaker 3: in me. I've always, you know, said that I believe
[10:27] Speaker 3: in the trinity, but you know, I wow, Well.
[10:30] Speaker 2: You want to be fully biblical, bow your knee before
[10:34] Speaker 2: God's revelation of himself in scripture, rather than to try
[10:40] Speaker 2: to redefine him in a context that you can fully comprehend.
[10:43] Speaker 2: And he's beyond our cat right.
[10:47] Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, I agree. Thank you so much for your
[10:50] Speaker 3: help and for your time. By the way, my pastor
[10:53] Speaker 3: actually gave me this website. I text him with this
[10:55] Speaker 3: question like I'm both used and he gave me your website,

[15:09] Speaker 1: Broadcast and your host and canagraph.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Thanks very much, Randy. Back to the phone lines. Let's
[15:14] Speaker 2: talk next. Did John listening in Saint Louis, Missouri.
[15:18] Speaker 4: Hi John, Hi Hank, thanks for taking my call. I
[15:21] Speaker 4: really appreciate your show and your ministry, and God bless
[15:24] Speaker 4: you and your family.
[15:25] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[15:26] Speaker 4: My question is about my good friend who just last
[15:29] Speaker 4: night received the Holy Spirit and he was speaking in tongues.
[15:33] Speaker 4: He's been through a rough life. He just recently got
[15:35] Speaker 4: out of prison. He was saved before he went into prison.
[15:39] Speaker 1: So my question is.
[15:41] Speaker 4: This kind of threefold. Is Archie filled with the Holy
[15:43] Speaker 4: Spirit when you're first saved? And how was receiving the
[15:46] Speaker 4: Holy Spirit what he went through last night different? And
[15:49] Speaker 4: is already scriptural evidence for what he went through?
[15:53] Speaker 2: Well, John, you're right in saying that when you become
[15:56] Speaker 2: a believer, your body is, as it were, the temple
[16:00] Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit, a temple in which the Spirit resides.
[16:05] Speaker 2: So you are by definition in dwelt by the Spirit
[16:10] Speaker 2: of God at conversion. Okay, Now you can be infilled.
[16:16] Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is simply to say
[16:19] Speaker 2: you can be empowered daily for service, so that when
[16:26] Speaker 2: I say, for example, we do what we do not
[16:29] Speaker 2: by might nor by power, but by His Spirit, it
[16:34] Speaker 2: is an indication that I in dwelt by the Holy Spirit,
[16:37] Speaker 2: recognize that I also have to be infilled or empowered
[16:42] Speaker 2: for service. I can't do evangelism without being empowered for service.
[16:49] Speaker 2: I cannot do the radio broadcast without being empowered for service.
[16:54] Speaker 2: So there's a daily in filling that takes place as well.
[16:58] Speaker 2: So we are empowered by His Spirit to do what
[17:02] Speaker 2: we couldn't do by our own natural means. So there
[17:06] Speaker 2: is a daily in filling as well as a recognition
[17:10] Speaker 2: that we are in dwelt by the Holy Spirit as
[17:14] Speaker 2: those who belong to Christ.
[17:17] Speaker 4: Okay, I guess my question was or the way he
[17:20] Speaker 4: explained it sound like it was another step.
[17:23] Speaker 2: It's a second blessing. Yeah, and it's usually a second
[17:27] Speaker 2: blessing that is evidenced by speaking in tongues.
[17:31] Speaker 4: Right, he did speak in tongues. So I'm really happy
[17:34] Speaker 4: for I'm grateful for him. He's been really growing lately
[17:37] Speaker 4: in his faith, in his attended church and studying the
[17:40] Speaker 4: Word as far as I know, so he's doing great.
[17:43] Speaker 4: So I just I know there's gonna be questions from
[17:45] Speaker 4: other friends and family members of this person's friends of mine,
[17:49] Speaker 4: So I just want to be equipped to talk about
[17:51] Speaker 4: that and what that really means.
[17:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the secondary issue. So remember, we can debate
[17:55] Speaker 2: this vigorously without dividing over it. But I would say
[17:58] Speaker 2: that there is not a biblical precedent to say that
[18:03] Speaker 2: the second blessing is evidenced by speaking in tongues. And
[18:09] Speaker 2: I wouldn't even talk about a second blessing as much
[18:11] Speaker 2: as I would talk about a third blessing and a
[18:13] Speaker 2: fourth blessing and a one millionth blessing because I'm daily
[18:17] Speaker 2: being empowered for service. I don't think that you can
[18:22] Speaker 2: make an absolute, ironclad case for the notion that tongue
[18:27] Speaker 2: ceased with the closing of the canon of Scripture the
[18:30] Speaker 2: end of the Apostolic age. But I do think that
[18:32] Speaker 2: you can make a pretty good case for saying that
[18:34] Speaker 2: tongues are not normative today. Okay, yeah, so again, I've
[18:38] Speaker 2: written about this in various forms, but I want to
[18:41] Speaker 2: caution you, and it sounds like you're very sensitive this already.
[18:45] Speaker 2: This is not a hill to die on. It's one
[18:47] Speaker 2: of those things that iron sharpen's iron. You could have
[18:50] Speaker 2: a healthy debate on it, but ultimately you don't have
[18:52] Speaker 2: to divide over it.
[18:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, I just thank God that he's where he's at
[18:57] Speaker 4: right now, and so I wouldn't want to want to
[19:00] Speaker 4: anybody up on anything that's not a fundamental issue. So
[19:04] Speaker 4: thank you very much. I appresue the show.
[19:06] Speaker 2: Hey you got a John, thank you so much for
[19:07] Speaker 2: your call back to the phone lines. Will talk next
[19:09] Speaker 2: to Brenda. She's listening high Point, North Carolina. Hi, Brenda, Hi, the.
[19:16] Speaker 5: Girl that called you at the beginning of the show
[19:18] Speaker 5: about the Trinity. Ye, Okay, when Jesus said, my God,
[19:24] Speaker 5: My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Okay? Were they?
[19:28] Speaker 5: I mean, like, I need you to tell me one
[19:30] Speaker 5: more time? Okay, I believe in the trinity of the
[19:33] Speaker 5: three and one? But were at that time they totally separated?
[19:39] Speaker 5: Or were they? You used the word that started with
[19:42] Speaker 5: a D and other words like they're three but they're
[19:46] Speaker 5: three and one? But like when he was on the cross,
[19:50] Speaker 5: what position were they taking them?
[19:54] Speaker 2: Well, remember again that we're talking about a way of
[19:59] Speaker 2: codifying the nature of God, a way of apprehending and
[20:02] Speaker 2: then communicating what the Bible says with respect to them.
[20:06] Speaker 5: What does that mean?
[20:07] Speaker 2: Well, it means that we are taking a concept and
[20:12] Speaker 2: we are presenting it in a holistic fashion so that
[20:17] Speaker 2: we can talk about it. In other words, I'm using
[20:20] Speaker 2: terminology here, but I have to explain myself.
[20:23] Speaker 5: Okay.
[20:24] Speaker 2: Essentially, all I'm communicating, as I communicated earlier on in
[20:29] Speaker 2: the broadcast, is that the Bible teaches that there's only
[20:32] Speaker 2: one God. The Bible teaches that the Father, Son, and
[20:35] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit are God, and the Father's son and Holy
[20:37] Speaker 2: Spirit are eternally distinct. In other words, the Father doesn't
[20:40] Speaker 2: become the son, and the son doesn't become the Holy Spirit.
[20:43] Speaker 2: That's the point now, with respect specifically to your question.
[20:47] Speaker 2: When Jesus Christ on the cross said Eli lama subuctany,
[20:51] Speaker 2: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? He is,
[20:55] Speaker 2: in essence quoting David Psalm twenty two, My God, my God,
[21:00] Speaker 2: why have you forsaken me? And in doing that, he's
[21:03] Speaker 2: not just quoting a portion, but drawing our attention to
[21:08] Speaker 2: the whole a Psalm twenty two. And if you read
[21:12] Speaker 2: Psalm twenty two, you recognize that he has not despised
[21:18] Speaker 2: or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one. He has
[21:22] Speaker 2: not hidden his face from him, but he has listened
[21:25] Speaker 2: to his cry for help. So we can't suppose that
[21:29] Speaker 2: somewhere or sometime there was an ontological break in the
[21:34] Speaker 2: nature of God such that the Father and Son were
[21:38] Speaker 2: by nature or essence separated from one another. That would
[21:43] Speaker 2: be going beyond or reading something into the text of
[21:51] Speaker 2: scripture that the text isn't intended to say. Obviously, God
[21:55] Speaker 2: had not forsaken David. And as I pointed out verse
[21:59] Speaker 2: twenty four, make that clear.
[22:01] Speaker 5: Mm hm that Psalm twenty two.
[22:04] Speaker 2: Yeah, Psalm twenty two, and what you have in Psalm
[22:06] Speaker 2: twenty two is very typical. There's a contrast between emotional
[22:10] Speaker 2: despair and faith in God, and that's what's being highlighted.
[22:15] Speaker 2: But having said that once again, I want to emphasize
[22:18] Speaker 2: the fact that this does not in any way suggest
[22:21] Speaker 2: an ontological separation, a break. There is none. In fact,
[22:27] Speaker 2: we have to recognize that even in the passion of Christ,
[22:31] Speaker 2: he was a sweet smelling savor unto God. A lot
[22:36] Speaker 2: of people think that Jesus Christ became sin and therefore
[22:39] Speaker 2: there was a separation, But no, Jesus never became sin.
[22:45] Speaker 2: Jesus was the sin bearer, the one upon whom the
[22:49] Speaker 2: sins of the world were laid.
[22:51] Speaker 5: Yeah, hey, bore our sam.
[22:53] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes, So he is an unblemished lamb
[22:57] Speaker 2: upon whom the sins of the world are laid.
[23:00] Speaker 5: Well, listen, I just thank God for your wisdom, and
[23:03] Speaker 5: if you'll write quick so I can write it down.
[23:06] Speaker 5: I do want to make a contribution because I want
[23:11] Speaker 5: to order some more stuff to do. You have a
[23:13] Speaker 5: phone number I can call her.
[23:15] Speaker 2: Here's the best way to do it right now. In
[23:17] Speaker 2: your case, you could just hang on and someone's going
[23:19] Speaker 2: to pick you up and get the information. But the
[23:21] Speaker 2: number you would normally call is triple eight seven thousand
[23:27] Speaker 2: cr ir.
[23:29] Speaker 5: Yeah, I promise you. If God gives me another breath,
[23:33] Speaker 5: I am going to send a contribution and one more thing. Okay,
[23:37] Speaker 5: for myself, I think I study my Bible all the time.
[23:41] Speaker 5: It's all marked up. I studied, I've had Bible studies.
[23:44] Speaker 5: But so for me, do you think I need to
[23:48] Speaker 5: get the apocalypse code? And I had the same thing
[23:52] Speaker 5: happen to me as the young man that you talked
[23:54] Speaker 5: to while ago. That person was in jail and had
[23:58] Speaker 5: gotten saved. I have a neighbor same thing, and I'm
[24:05] Speaker 5: wanting to get something for him because he is so young,
[24:09] Speaker 5: he's so hungry for the Word, and when he saw
[24:13] Speaker 5: something that was a little bit easier to read that
[24:16] Speaker 5: I had when I became a Christian, he just had
[24:20] Speaker 5: a fit. And so what would be something good for
[24:23] Speaker 5: me to get him?
[24:24] Speaker 2: Well, you don't have a book called the Complete Bible
[24:27] Speaker 2: answer Book Collector's Edition, okay. And it takes a lot
[24:31] Speaker 2: of the questions that I answer on air, and it
[24:34] Speaker 2: chisels them down until just the gem emerges, and so
[24:38] Speaker 2: it becomes easy to read. But more than that, it
[24:42] Speaker 2: gives you the essence the answer in a very short way,
[24:46] Speaker 2: so that you can internalize the information then use the information.
[24:51] Speaker 5: Okay, Thank you so much, and God bless you.
[24:54] Speaker 2: God bless you, and appreciate all your encouragement. And I
[24:57] Speaker 2: hope you're this decision to support this ministry is encouraging
[25:02] Speaker 2: to others. I mean, the reality is we live in
[25:05] Speaker 2: time and space. We can freely say the Gospel's free,
[25:09] Speaker 2: but we also have to add to that that a
[25:12] Speaker 2: ministry like ours does take resources. So we ask you
[25:18] Speaker 2: to put in the plumbing. We ask you to be
[25:20] Speaker 2: the facilitator, to stand with us and genuinely become a
[25:23] Speaker 2: member of a team, because together we're touching lives not
[25:28] Speaker 2: just for time, but for eternity again. The Complete Bible
