[0:11] Speaker 1: This is the Bible answer Man Broadcast with Hank Annagraph.
[0:15] Speaker 1: Hank as President of the Christian Research Institute at CRI.
[0:19] Speaker 1: Our desire is to equip you not only to defend
[0:22] Speaker 1: the historic Christian faith, but to become a winsome witness
[0:26] Speaker 1: to a spiritually hungry but skeptical world, because life and
[0:31] Speaker 1: truth matter. To learn more or to find resources to
[0:34] Speaker 1: help you grow in grace, call eight eight eight seven
[0:38] Speaker 1: thousand CROI or go online to equip dot org. That's
[0:43] Speaker 1: equip dot org. The following program was pre recorded and
[0:49] Speaker 1: now here's Hank Cannagraph.
[0:51] Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Randy, and a lot of you
[0:53] Speaker 2: hanging on. We'll go right to the phone calls. First
[0:55] Speaker 2: up as James. He's listening in Vancouver, British Columbia.
[0:59] Speaker 3: Hi James, Hi, thank you so much for taking my call,
[1:02] Speaker 3: my pleasure.
[1:04] Speaker 4: I needed to get a little more understanding on Colossians three,
[1:09] Speaker 4: verse three, for you are dead and your life is
[1:13] Speaker 4: hid with Christ. It was the second part of that
[1:17] Speaker 4: verse that I would like you to throw some light on.
[1:22] Speaker 4: Your life is hit with Christ in God.
[1:25] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[1:26] Speaker 2: Well, remember the context here is that Paul is writing
[1:30] Speaker 2: to the Clausians and saying, you have been raised with Christ,
[1:34] Speaker 2: and therefore set your hearts on things above, where Christ
[1:38] Speaker 2: is seated at the right hand of God. Set your
[1:42] Speaker 2: minds on things above, not unearthly things. Four. You died,
[1:49] Speaker 2: and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
[1:53] Speaker 2: And I think what we have to recognize in this
[1:55] Speaker 2: equation is that this is a that represents the believer's
[2:02] Speaker 2: status in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And in
[2:07] Speaker 2: context we see Paul often referring to the already and
[2:13] Speaker 2: not yet. And that's a perfect example or illustration of
[2:19] Speaker 2: doing just that. The escoton broke in with our Lord
[2:24] Speaker 2: and Savior Jesus Christ, but we await the consummation, and
[2:30] Speaker 2: as such we are hidden with Christ in God. We
[2:35] Speaker 2: are safe and secure, but we are not yet glorified.
[2:40] Speaker 2: And that covers the spectrum of what happens justification, sanctification,
[2:46] Speaker 2: and ultimate glorification. And that's why we can say we're
[2:49] Speaker 2: hidden in Christ, we're secure in Christ. Practically we're still sinners.
[2:56] Speaker 2: What takes place when Christ comes and the esketon receives
[3:02] Speaker 2: its consummation is then we will be practically righteous as well,
[3:09] Speaker 2: and that's something we still await. And therefore we recognize
[3:15] Speaker 2: that we are raised with Christ. We are to set
[3:18] Speaker 2: our hearts on things above where Christ is seated at
[3:22] Speaker 2: the right hand of God, because that's our inheritance. And
[3:26] Speaker 2: as people that do that, our eyes, our ears, our
[3:31] Speaker 2: minds are intellects. The entirety of our being is set
[3:35] Speaker 2: on heavenly things as opposed to earthly things, because that
[3:42] Speaker 2: is what will happen at the consummation of all things.
[3:47] Speaker 2: Back to the phone lines, we'll talk next to Judy
[3:49] Speaker 2: listening in Missouri.
[3:50] Speaker 6: Hi, Judy, Hi Henk, thank you so much for taking
[3:54] Speaker 6: my call.
[3:55] Speaker 2: My pleasure.
[3:57] Speaker 6: I have a question that I thought I knew the
[3:58] Speaker 6: answer to, but in trying to explain it, I realize
[4:02] Speaker 6: that I didn't completely understand it. And my question is
[4:06] Speaker 6: what about people who truly have never heard the Gospel?
[4:10] Speaker 6: And will they go to heaven?
[4:13] Speaker 2: Well, remember that the issue is this, all of us
[4:19] Speaker 2: have the light of creation, which is to say, as
[4:23] Speaker 2: you look around the universe, you recognize that there's a
[4:28] Speaker 2: creator of the universe. Every effect has to have a
[4:31] Speaker 2: cause equal to our greater than itself. But not only
[4:36] Speaker 2: is the knowledge of God written large in the universe
[4:40] Speaker 2: that He has created, but is also written small, as
[4:43] Speaker 2: it were imprinted on the canvas of our consciousness. So
[4:47] Speaker 2: we have an outer witness, we also have an inner
[4:50] Speaker 2: witness that God is, that God created the universe, and
[4:55] Speaker 2: that we are created in the image and likeness of God.
[5:00] Speaker 2: So we have that testimony. And Paul lays this out
[5:04] Speaker 2: in Romans one, two and three. If you respond to
[5:07] Speaker 2: the light you have, God will give you the further light,
[5:09] Speaker 2: which is the light of Christ. Typically he does that
[5:13] Speaker 2: through normative means, which is through human agency. So we
[5:17] Speaker 2: bear witness to the world. God sends us to the world.
[5:21] Speaker 2: God brings people in the paths of those who are
[5:25] Speaker 2: truly seeking after Him, and through that they can receive
[5:28] Speaker 2: the light of Christ. But God can do that apart
[5:32] Speaker 2: from normative means as well. The apostle Paul, for example,
[5:36] Speaker 2: as a classic example of someone who is reached by
[5:39] Speaker 2: supernatural means. Christ appeared to him as he was on
[5:44] Speaker 2: the road to Damascus. So the point in saying all
[5:47] Speaker 2: of this is not that there's not enough light. The
[5:50] Speaker 2: point is to say that men of darkness rather than light,
[5:53] Speaker 2: because their deeds are evil, as Jesus Christ put it
[5:56] Speaker 2: in academus. So as long as we're looking for God,
[5:59] Speaker 2: God is not apprecious, He's not hiding from us. He's
[6:02] Speaker 2: willing to reveal himself to us. In fact, Paul in
[6:06] Speaker 2: Acts seventeen on Mars Hill in the Areopagus, is telling
[6:10] Speaker 2: people that precise thing. He's saying that from one man,
[6:13] Speaker 2: God made every nation of men that they should inhabit
[6:16] Speaker 2: the whole world. He determined the exact times and places
[6:19] Speaker 2: they should live, and he did that so that men
[6:21] Speaker 2: might reach out for him and find him, though he's
[6:24] Speaker 2: not far away from each one of us. So again
[6:26] Speaker 2: the point there is is God puts us in the
[6:29] Speaker 2: exact times and places so that we're in the best
[6:33] Speaker 2: possible place to seek him if in fact we want
[6:37] Speaker 2: to find him.
[6:38] Speaker 6: Okay, And that's basically what I thought the answer to
[6:42] Speaker 6: the question was. But I guess I was having trouble
[6:46] Speaker 6: connecting the knowledge and like basically the God shaped hole
[6:51] Speaker 6: in our heart where we would seek as evidence by creation,
[6:55] Speaker 6: but how we would connect that to Jesus Christ be
[6:58] Speaker 6: in the way the truth. And you did touch on that.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, So again you can see this in Romans one,
[7:04] Speaker 2: two and three. The Light of creation in Romans one,
[7:07] Speaker 2: the light of conscience in Romans two, and the light
[7:10] Speaker 2: of Christ and Romans three. But again, we all have light.
[7:15] Speaker 2: And I would say that it is not the absence
[7:18] Speaker 2: of knowledge that damns. It's the despising of knowledge that dams.
[7:24] Speaker 2: And I think that's why Jesus Christ said to Nicodemus,
[7:28] Speaker 2: light came into darkness. But men love darkness rather than light.
[7:33] Speaker 2: And imagine the context of that. Here you have Messiah
[7:38] Speaker 2: in their midst. And yet men love darkness to such
[7:43] Speaker 2: an extent that they are willing to pawn off his miracles,
[7:50] Speaker 2: his person, to be Elzebub, the prince of demons. That's
[7:56] Speaker 2: because they love darkness. But if they want light, that
[7:59] Speaker 2: light shines in the darkness and we can apprehend it,
[8:04] Speaker 2: and God will give us light as much light as
[8:08] Speaker 2: we could possibly handle.
[8:10] Speaker 6: Okay, thank you very much.
[8:12] Speaker 2: You got it. And of course, people are not condemned
[8:15] Speaker 2: to hell for not believing in Jesus. Rather, they are
[8:19] Speaker 2: already condemned because of their sin. So the real question
[8:24] Speaker 2: is not how can God send anyone to hell? But
[8:27] Speaker 2: how can God condescend to save any one of us?
[8:32] Speaker 2: And if ignorance were a ticket to heaven. The greatest
[8:35] Speaker 2: evangelistic enterprise wouldn't be a Billy Graham crusade, but a
[8:39] Speaker 2: concerted cover up campaign. Such a campaign would focus on
[8:44] Speaker 2: ending evangelism, burning bibles, closing churches. Why because soon no
[8:50] Speaker 2: one would have heard of Jesus Christ and everybody would
[8:52] Speaker 2: be on their way to heaven. That's the argument to
[8:55] Speaker 2: a logical absurdity. But again the best way of communicating
[8:59] Speaker 2: them to people is to let people know that they
[9:03] Speaker 2: have light. If they respond to the light, God is willing, ready, able,
[9:08] Speaker 2: and desirous of giving them that light. I want to
[9:12] Speaker 2: go back to the phone lines, doctor Robert listening on
[9:14] Speaker 2: the web in Cleveland, Ohio.
[9:16] Speaker 7: Hi, Robert, Oh hank. If we are born out of
[9:21] Speaker 7: the womb with a conscience, how is it that we're
[9:26] Speaker 7: still falling? I mean, if we know the difference between
[9:33] Speaker 7: right and wrong, how are we still falling? You know?
[9:37] Speaker 2: Well, first of all, the reality is we are fallen.
[9:40] Speaker 2: We're told that by scripture, and we see that by evidence,
[9:44] Speaker 2: which is to say, even children we recognize didn't have
[9:48] Speaker 2: to learn how to sin. They were born and conceived
[9:51] Speaker 2: in sin. So we see the evidence right in front
[9:55] Speaker 2: of us as parents with kids. We know that immediately
[9:59] Speaker 2: we don't have to be I thought that, so it
[10:01] Speaker 2: is a reality now. The fact that we have a
[10:05] Speaker 2: conscience is letting us know again that we are in
[10:11] Speaker 2: God's debt, that we're sinners, and it also brings us
[10:15] Speaker 2: into a position of wanting to know the Gospel. The
[10:18] Speaker 2: entrance requirements into the Body of Christ is to recognize
[10:21] Speaker 2: that you're a sinner, to be willing to repent to
[10:24] Speaker 2: that sin, and then to receive Jesus Christ as savior
[10:27] Speaker 2: and Lord of your life.
[10:29] Speaker 7: Okay, thank you.
[10:31] Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your question, Robert. And of course,
[10:33] Speaker 2: knowing the difference between right and wrong is different from
[10:38] Speaker 2: doing what we know is right and not doing what
[10:43] Speaker 2: we know is wrong. We are held morally culpable for
[10:48] Speaker 2: our decisions all the way along the line. We'll never
[10:53] Speaker 2: be able to stand in the greatest size before God
[10:55] Speaker 2: and say I didn't know any better, because our conscience
[10:59] Speaker 2: bears witness that we do, and therefore we are morally
[11:04] Speaker 2: responsible before loving God for what we do. We'll be
[11:08] Speaker 2: right back on the other side of the break with
[11:11] Speaker 2: your questions and more.

[15:07] Speaker 1: Now back to the Bible answer Man Broadcast and your
[15:10] Speaker 1: host and Canagraph.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Thank for much, Randy, and we'll go right back to
[15:14] Speaker 2: our phone callers. Next up as Greg, He's listening in Nashville, Tennessee.
[15:18] Speaker 6: Hi Greg, Well, Hi, thanks for taking my call.
[15:21] Speaker 2: You're welcome.
[15:23] Speaker 7: My question is.
[15:25] Speaker 5: Are some people prevesting for hell?
[15:28] Speaker 9: Do they have no chance of going to heaven even
[15:31] Speaker 9: though they accept crisis or savior.
[15:35] Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there are certainly are systems of thought
[15:39] Speaker 2: in which people are doomed from the womb to certain destruction. Those,
[15:44] Speaker 2: in fact, were the exact words of John Calvin. So
[15:48] Speaker 2: there are systems of thought within Christianity at say that
[15:52] Speaker 2: you're created in such a way that you cannot respond
[15:56] Speaker 2: to the Gospel. In fact, that's say so much that
[16:00] Speaker 2: all people are created in such a way that they
[16:02] Speaker 2: cannot respond to the Gospel. But God regenerates some the
[16:08] Speaker 2: elect so that they can respond to the Gospel and
[16:12] Speaker 2: thus be saved. And that's why in the Calvinist system,
[16:15] Speaker 2: regeneration always precedes faith. So again, in that system of thought, yeah,
[16:21] Speaker 2: specifically people are doomed from the womb to certain destruction.
[16:26] Speaker 2: But that is not a system that is adhered to
[16:29] Speaker 2: by all Christians. It is a system of thought or
[16:32] Speaker 2: a particular theological construct within the pale of orthodoxy.
[16:36] Speaker 6: Okay, thank you, you got it.
[16:38] Speaker 2: Look, I mean, I'm just telling it like it is.
[16:40] Speaker 2: I mean, there are Christian theologians that hold to that
[16:43] Speaker 2: particular position. For example, Calvin said that God not only
[16:49] Speaker 2: first saw the fall of the first man, and in
[16:52] Speaker 2: him the ruin of his posterity, but also at his
[16:54] Speaker 2: own pleasure arranged it are not add on equal terms.
[17:03] Speaker 2: All people answer no. Some are preordained to eternal life,
[17:10] Speaker 2: others to eternal damnation. And accordingly, as each has been
[17:15] Speaker 2: created for one or the other those ends, we say
[17:19] Speaker 2: that he has been predestined to life or death, or
[17:24] Speaker 2: said Calvin, God arranges all things by his sovereign counsel
[17:29] Speaker 2: in such a way that individuals are born who are
[17:33] Speaker 2: doomed from the womb to certain death. So this is
[17:39] Speaker 2: a teaching of a whole construct within Christianity. And we
[17:45] Speaker 2: have again tried to help people think about these by
[17:48] Speaker 2: in fairness giving the best non Calvinist and the best
[17:53] Speaker 2: Calvinist response to this issue of predestination and whether we
[17:58] Speaker 2: should believe in had a ballistic freedom or libertarian freedom.
[18:04] Speaker 2: The journal article that I reference in this regard is
[18:07] Speaker 2: available through the ministry of the Christian Research Institute. Again
[18:10] Speaker 2: you can check it out online. Let's go back to
[18:12] Speaker 2: the phone lines. We'll talk next to Andy. Andy is
[18:16] Speaker 2: listening on Lincoln, Nebraska High Andy.
[18:19] Speaker 9: How's it going good?
[18:21] Speaker 5: My question is is concerning immigration. I know, I know,
[18:26] Speaker 5: God ordained the nations. But at the same time we're
[18:29] Speaker 5: probably to help a bother to need. And well, it's
[18:32] Speaker 5: true that some people come here from you know, ser
[18:35] Speaker 5: to Mexico where without good intentions. The majority of people,
[18:39] Speaker 5: I think you've probably come here, you know, the better
[18:41] Speaker 5: and solved, the better their families. It's kind of almost
[18:45] Speaker 5: two points the tension. I think, what what is your
[18:47] Speaker 5: what's your take on whether or not we should steal
[18:49] Speaker 5: the border completely or I mean just your general view
[18:52] Speaker 5: and immigration based on the Bible.
[18:54] Speaker 2: Well, I think this is one of those issues that
[18:57] Speaker 2: the Bible doesn't deal with directly, does deal with in principle.
[19:02] Speaker 2: And as someone who's immigrated to do different countries, I
[19:06] Speaker 2: was three years old when we immigrated to Canada and
[19:08] Speaker 2: then fourteen years old when we immigrated from Canada the
[19:12] Speaker 2: United States. I'm very thankful for the opportunity my family
[19:15] Speaker 2: had to immigrate from Holland first to Canada and then
[19:19] Speaker 2: to the United States. And I think that whenever you immigrate,
[19:24] Speaker 2: whenever you become part of another country, another culture, what
[19:29] Speaker 2: you have to do is take seriously your responsibilities within
[19:33] Speaker 2: that culture. And therefore you want to make sure that
[19:37] Speaker 2: when you come into a culture that you're not just
[19:40] Speaker 2: a reckless consumer, but you're a contributor to what happens
[19:44] Speaker 2: within that culture. And if that happens, you can better
[19:50] Speaker 2: a culture, and you can thank God for the opportunity
[19:54] Speaker 2: that we have, the freedoms that we have, and the
[19:57] Speaker 2: opportunities that we have to legally go from one country
[20:00] Speaker 2: to another country. Again, legality is an operative word in
[20:05] Speaker 2: all of this, because if you talk about sealing our borders,
[20:09] Speaker 2: you immediately recognize that there is some illegal transporting going
[20:14] Speaker 2: on between countries and over borders, and illegality is never
[20:19] Speaker 2: a good thing. Okay, But again, I'm thankful from a
[20:23] Speaker 2: personal standpoint for the opportunity we had to immigrate by law,
[20:28] Speaker 2: by meeting the standards that were asked of us to meet.
[20:33] Speaker 2: I'm thankful for that opportunity. I want to go back
[20:34] Speaker 2: to the phone lines, doctor Ernest. He's listening in Edmonton
[20:39] Speaker 2: High Earnest.
[20:39] Speaker 9: I'm just wondering if there was from God, you know,
[20:42] Speaker 9: like the dream was just so vivid, you know, in
[20:45] Speaker 9: my dream, I die from my faith in Canada, and
[20:49] Speaker 9: the scripture came to my mind, and they love not
[20:51] Speaker 9: their life unto death. I just wondered if that's from
[20:54] Speaker 9: God or not.
[20:55] Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't answer that question because I can't answer
[20:58] Speaker 2: the anecdote. I can't answer the subjective experience. But I
[21:03] Speaker 2: can tell you this. Yeah. Well, the basic principle is
[21:07] Speaker 2: that we are those who are called to suffer for Christ,
[21:11] Speaker 2: where those who are called to be willing to die
[21:13] Speaker 2: for Christ. And we are those who are called to
[21:17] Speaker 2: proclaim the Gospel to be a light on a hill,
[21:21] Speaker 2: so all the elements of your dream bear witness to reality.
[21:26] Speaker 2: We are willing to testify, even to the point of
[21:29] Speaker 2: shedding our own blood. I think the inverse is the problem.
[21:32] Speaker 2: The inverse is that while we're called to be ambassadors,
[21:36] Speaker 2: most of us have been instead secret agents who have
[21:39] Speaker 2: never blown our cover before the unregenerate world. Back to
[21:42] Speaker 2: the phone lines, we'll talk next to Mary Allen in Wisconsin. Hi,
[21:45] Speaker 2: Mary Ellen, Hi, how are you good?
[21:48] Speaker 1: How are you good?
[21:49] Speaker 10: Thank you? I am very good as well. My question
[21:53] Speaker 10: has to do with Buddhism and the belief in Buddhism.
[21:56] Speaker 10: I have some family members who are professed Buddhists, and
[22:01] Speaker 10: even given that they were raised in a Christian home,
[22:05] Speaker 10: are professed Buddhists and I'm wondering if there are particular
[22:09] Speaker 10: scriptures that would speak specifically to someone with that belief.
[22:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, very much. So let me set this up so
[22:17] Speaker 2: that everybody listening in can kind of get an idea
[22:20] Speaker 2: of what's going on here. But Buddhism is a historical
[22:24] Speaker 2: offshoot of Hinduism, and so what you are taught as
[22:29] Speaker 2: a Buddhist is to embrace a triple gem. You first
[22:33] Speaker 2: find refuge in Buddha, then in Buddhist teaching, and finally
[22:40] Speaker 2: in the community of Buddhist priests. And of course the
[22:44] Speaker 2: priests are those who guide the devotees along the path
[22:48] Speaker 2: to enlightenment. And in Buddhism there are four noble truths,
[22:54] Speaker 2: and this is really instructive to grass because therein lies
[22:58] Speaker 2: the key to witness as well. But the four noble
[23:02] Speaker 2: truths in Buddhism are that all life is suffering, that
[23:06] Speaker 2: the source of suffering is desire, and that liberation from
[23:12] Speaker 2: suffering is found in the elimination of desire, and that
[23:16] Speaker 2: desire is eliminated by following an eightfold path. And so
[23:19] Speaker 2: the eightfold path is instructive in that they're taught right understanding,
[23:24] Speaker 2: right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort,
[23:31] Speaker 2: right awareness, and right meditation. I think I got all
[23:35] Speaker 2: eight there. And by following that path through many reincarnations,
[23:40] Speaker 2: they hope to erase karmic debt. And they hope, as
[23:45] Speaker 2: a result of erasing this karmic debt, to achieve nirvana,
[23:50] Speaker 2: which is the realization of no self. And in that
[23:54] Speaker 2: way they attain liberation from suffering, liberation from the endless
[24:00] Speaker 2: cycle of life and death and rebirth. So reincarnation plays
[24:05] Speaker 2: a huge role in the equation. So what do you
[24:10] Speaker 2: say to a Buddhist, Well, in sharp contrast to their teaching,
[24:15] Speaker 2: we must exercise disciplines in order to transform our desires,
[24:23] Speaker 2: as opposed to eliminating our desires. So it's the transforming
[24:29] Speaker 2: of desire that is operative. And ultimately, suffering is not
[24:34] Speaker 2: overcome through stamping out the self, but through the selfless
[24:39] Speaker 2: sacrifice of a sinless savior. They want to stamp out
[24:43] Speaker 2: the self so that they can become one with nirvana.
[24:47] Speaker 2: We're saying, no, you don't have to go through this
[24:50] Speaker 2: endless cycle of reincarnation, the soul continuously returning in other bodies. No,
[24:57] Speaker 2: this body's going to be resurrected. So the whole of
[25:00] Speaker 2: resurrection is how we come to peace ultimately with the
[25:05] Speaker 2: tragedy of life. The tragedy of.
[25:07] Speaker 3: Life is not an easy thing to come to grips with,
[25:11] Speaker 3: so we say through resurrection, we come to grips with
[25:15] Speaker 3: the maladies of a fallen world. We look past the
[25:19] Speaker 3: maladies to the hope, and we recognize the reality that
[25:23] Speaker 3: in this world we are always going to have trouble
[25:26] Speaker 3: and we're never going to overcome it. But there's one
[25:29] Speaker 3: who did overcome it, and therefore we rest in him,
[25:33] Speaker 3: we receive him. He transforms our life and gives us
[25:37] Speaker 3: peace in the midst of continuing storms. Thank you very much,
[25:42] Speaker 3: you got it, and I've written about that in various places,
