On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (09/07/26), Hank wishes all of you a happy Labor Day and details the Labor Day holiday that God gave us long before the government did—our Sabbath Day rest. Just as we rest today on Labor Day, the Lord commands us to rest on the Sabbath each week. “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do” (Deut. 5:13-14 NIV). So our Labor Day holiday according to God is our Sabbath Day rest, which begs the question: why do Christians rest from their labor on the first day of the week (Sunday), rather than the last day of the week (Saturday)? The answer, says Hank, is encapsulated in just one word—resurrection. Hank also discusses something else that comes to his mind when he thinks about the word labor, and that is what Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 3, that each person will be rewarded according to their own labor. In other words, what we do now in this life counts for all eternity. Hank uses the illustration of his invitation to play Cypress Point, which he claims to be the most spectacular golf course on Earth. For months, he beat his body into submission while dreaming of the day he would experience walking its fairways. Without his strenuous preparations, he would have still experienced the same breathtaking views; however, all his hard work added immeasurably to his experience. That is what heaven will be like. As phenomenal as Cypress Point is, it pales in comparison to what paradise restored will be. Hank spent one day at a golf haven; he will spend an eternity in God’s heaven. It stands to reason, therefore, that he would put a lot more labor into preparing for an eternity in heaven with God than he did for playing eighteen holes of golf.

## Transcript

[0:07] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Bible Answer Man broadcast with Hank Hanegraaff,
[0:11] Speaker 1: president of the Christian Research Institute. We're on the air
[0:14] Speaker 1: because life and truth matter. May your Labor Day be blessed.
[0:19] Speaker 1: Labor Day is a tribute to Americans whose labors have
[0:22] Speaker 1: contributed to the well-being of our country. But beyond celebrating
[0:27] Speaker 1: what your labors are doing for our country, at CRI
[0:30] Speaker 1: we want to celebrate what your labors are doing for
[0:33] Speaker 1: the kingdom. The Apostle Paul exhorted the believers in Corinth,
[0:37] Speaker 1: My dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you.
[0:42] Speaker 1: Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,
[0:45] Speaker 1: because you know that your labor in the Lord is
[0:48] Speaker 1: not in vain. So for all that your labors mean
[0:51] Speaker 1: to so many, we are grateful. The following program was pre-recorded.
[0:57] Speaker 1: And now, here's the president of the Christian Research Institute,
[1:01] Speaker 1: Hank Hanegraaff.
[1:03] Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Randy, and happy Labor Day weekend
[1:08] Speaker 2: to all listening in to the broadcast right now. I
[1:11] Speaker 2: love that introduction. And I was thinking about Labor Day
[1:16] Speaker 2: all day today. In fact, I googled Labor Day. And
[1:21] Speaker 2: when you do, the first thing that comes up is
[1:25] Speaker 2: a Wikipedia entry that says Labor Day is a federal holiday.
[1:32] Speaker 2: In the United States of America, a holiday celebrated on
[1:36] Speaker 2: the first Monday in September to honor, to recognize the
[1:42] Speaker 2: American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers
[1:48] Speaker 2: to the development and to the achievements of the United States.
[1:53] Speaker 2: It is the Monday of the long weekend known as
[1:59] Speaker 2: Labor Day weekend. So Labor Day is a day of
[2:05] Speaker 2: rest from your labors. Today, well, no one's working. Except,
[2:12] Speaker 2: of course, for me, I'm doing the show. Well, actually,
[2:16] Speaker 2: I'm really not doing the show. I'm pre-recording the show.
[2:19] Speaker 2: But at any rate, I want to say a few
[2:21] Speaker 2: things about Labor Day. The first and foremost is that
[2:27] Speaker 2: I'm hoping and praying that that you had a great
[2:31] Speaker 2: Labor Day weekend with your family members and with your friends.
[2:36] Speaker 2: But what all of us ought to realize is that
[2:39] Speaker 2: God gave us a Labor Day holiday long, long before
[2:46] Speaker 2: the government did. That Labor Day holiday is actually found
[2:51] Speaker 2: in the Bible. It's found in the Old Testament book
[2:54] Speaker 2: of Deuteronomy. It's in chapter 5. And it is a
[2:58] Speaker 2: Labor Day holiday that all of us should adhere to.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Here's what Moses says about it. Perhaps you've memorized this.
[3:09] Speaker 2: It's the fourth commandment, where Moses says, Observe the Sabbath
[3:14] Speaker 2: day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God
[3:21] Speaker 2: has commanded you to. Six days you shall labor and
[3:26] Speaker 2: do all of your work. But the seventh day is
[3:30] Speaker 2: a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you
[3:35] Speaker 2: shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son
[3:41] Speaker 2: or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox,
[3:47] Speaker 2: your donkey, or any of your animals, nor any foreigner
[3:52] Speaker 2: that is residing in your towns, so that your male
[3:57] Speaker 2: and female servants servants may rest just as you do. Remember,
[4:03] Speaker 2: remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the
[4:07] Speaker 2: Lord your God brought you out of there with a
[4:11] Speaker 2: mighty hand, with an outstretched arm. Therefore, the Lord your
[4:18] Speaker 2: God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. So,
[4:26] Speaker 2: Our Labor Day holiday, according to God, is our Sabbath
[4:30] Speaker 2: day rest. Which immediately begs a question. Why do Christians
[4:37] Speaker 2: rest from their labor on Sunday as opposed to on Saturday?
[4:44] Speaker 2: On the first day of the week, rather than on
[4:48] Speaker 2: the last day of the week? Well, the answer is
[4:51] Speaker 2: encapsulated in just one word. And that word is the
[4:59] Speaker 2: glorious word resurrection. In remembrance of the resurrection, the early
[5:07] Speaker 2: Christian church, they actually changed the day of worship. The
[5:13] Speaker 2: day of our Sabbath rest from Saturday to Sunday. And then,
[5:20] Speaker 2: within weeks, thousands of Jews willingly gave up a theological
[5:27] Speaker 2: tradition that had given them their national identity. It was
[5:33] Speaker 2: God himself, God, who provided the early church with a
[5:39] Speaker 2: brand new pattern of worship as a result of Christ's
[5:43] Speaker 2: resurrection on the first day of the week and as
[5:47] Speaker 2: a result of the Holy Spirit's descent on Pentecost Sunday.
[5:53] Speaker 2: Here's a second point to keep in mind. It is
[5:57] Speaker 2: Scripture itself which provides the meaning behind the symbol of
[6:04] Speaker 2: the Sabbath and thus the reason for the shift in
[6:08] Speaker 2: celebration from the last day of the week to the
[6:12] Speaker 2: first day of the week. In Genesis, think about this,
[6:16] Speaker 2: in Genesis, the Sabbath was a celebration of God's completed
[6:22] Speaker 2: work in creation. After the Exodus, Well, then the Sabbath
[6:29] Speaker 2: expands to a celebration of God's deliverance from oppression in Egypt.
[6:36] Speaker 2: And as a result of Christ's resurrection, the Sabbath's emphasis
[6:42] Speaker 2: shifts once again. It becomes a celebration of the rest
[6:48] Speaker 2: we have through Jesus Christ, who delivers us from sin
[6:54] Speaker 2: and from the grave. for the emerging Christian church, the
[6:59] Speaker 2: most dangerous snare. A snare was a failure to recognize
[7:08] Speaker 2: that Jesus was a substance that fulfilled the symbol of
[7:12] Speaker 2: the Sabbath. Let me make one final point in this regard.
[7:19] Speaker 2: If people insist on being slavishly bound to Old Testament laws,
[7:24] Speaker 2: they ought to be forewarned that failing to keep the
[7:29] Speaker 2: letter of the law might be hazardous to their health. Why? Well,
[7:34] Speaker 2: because according to Mosaic law, anyone who labors on the
[7:37] Speaker 2: Sabbath must be put to death. But as St. Paul explains,
[7:44] Speaker 2: Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
[7:48] Speaker 2: becoming a curse for us. As such, the Sabbath was
[7:54] Speaker 2: a shadow of the things that were to come. The reality, however,
[7:58] Speaker 2: is found in Christ and found in the resurrection of
[8:04] Speaker 2: our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So again, the point
[8:09] Speaker 2: is you and I should celebrate a Labor Day holiday
[8:13] Speaker 2: once a week for the rest of our lives. To
[8:17] Speaker 2: do so is to honor the commandment of God and
[8:22] Speaker 2: as such Well, to be richly blessed. In fact, I
[8:28] Speaker 2: was looking at how Psalm 128 weighs in on this matter.
[8:35] Speaker 2: You ought to read it. It's a great psalm. Blessed
[8:40] Speaker 2: are all who fear the Lord. Blessed are all who
[8:45] Speaker 2: walk in His ways. You shall eat the fruit of
[8:49] Speaker 2: your labors. Blessings and prosperity will be yours. So what
[8:56] Speaker 2: is the psalmist saying? He's saying that if you honor
[9:00] Speaker 2: the Lord, if you simply obey his commandments, you may
[9:06] Speaker 2: well experience the ultimate bread of blessing. And that bread
[9:12] Speaker 2: of blessing, well, it's sweeter in degree than the bread
[9:17] Speaker 2: of charity. Perhaps another way of saying that. His hard
[9:22] Speaker 2: work or hard labor is better by far than a
[9:28] Speaker 2: government handout. Well, there's some other things that I want
[9:32] Speaker 2: to discuss in the second part of the broadcast today
[9:35] Speaker 2: with respect to Labor Day. The thing that comes to
[9:38] Speaker 2: mind and the thing that I want to bring to
[9:40] Speaker 2: your mind is when I think about the word labor,
[9:45] Speaker 2: I think about what the Apostle Paul said in 1
[9:49] Speaker 2: Corinthians chapter 3. I'll talk about that again in the
[9:53] Speaker 2: second part of the broadcast, but here for just a tease,
[9:58] Speaker 2: he's talking about the fact that that each person is
[10:02] Speaker 2: going to be rewarded according to their labor. I think
[10:06] Speaker 2: we ought to think about that today on Labor Day.
[10:12] Speaker 2: And to remember, as you give, your labor is not
[10:17] Speaker 2: in vain. It allows us to reach out to people
[10:23] Speaker 2: in a time in which truth matters more than ever
[10:27] Speaker 2: because we live in a post-truth culture. So please stand
[10:31] Speaker 2: shoulder to shoulder with us in the battle for life
[10:33] Speaker 2: and truth. Again, you can give in a safe, secure
[10:35] Speaker 2: fashion on the web at equip.org or when you write
[10:38] Speaker 2: me a post office box 8500, Charlotte, North Carolina, zip
[10:42] Speaker 2: code 28271. Be right back with more thoughts on Labor Day.
[10:48] Speaker 1: For decades, Hank Hanegraaff has shared the truth of the
[10:52] Speaker 1: Christian faith over the radio waves, through the written word,
[10:56] Speaker 1: and by preaching from pulpits around the globe. Today, he
[11:00] Speaker 1: is ready to share his life in Christ. As detailed
[11:04] Speaker 1: in his most profoundly personal piece of penmanship to date,
[11:08] Speaker 1: truth matters, life matters more. Hank is closer to Christ
[11:12] Speaker 1: than ever before. and wants you to learn from his
[11:15] Speaker 1: experiences detailed in Truth Matters, Life Matters More, so that

[12:04] Speaker 3: truth matters. Yet an encounter with Christians in the underground
[12:08] Speaker 3: church of China left Hanegraaff contemplating his Christian experience. They
[12:12] Speaker 3: were experiencing something beyond truth. They were experiencing life. Truth Matters,
[12:18] Speaker 3: Life Matters More by Hank Hanegraaff is two books in one.
[12:21] Speaker 3: Because Truth Matters, part one equips Christians to defend the
[12:25] Speaker 3: essential truths of the historic Christian faith. In part two,
[12:28] Speaker 3: Hank explains why life matters more and how we can

[15:52] Speaker 1: Or visit our website at equip.org. Once again, here's your host,
[15:59] Speaker 1: Hank Hanegraaff.
[16:00] Speaker 2: Well, thank you very much, Randy. And this is a
[16:02] Speaker 2: special Labor Day broadcast. As I was saying in the
[16:05] Speaker 2: first part of the show today, God gave us a
[16:08] Speaker 2: Labor Day holiday long before the government did. Our Labor
[16:12] Speaker 2: Day holiday, according to God, is our Sabbath day rest.
[16:17] Speaker 2: Of course, I have some other thoughts to share with
[16:20] Speaker 2: you in this half of the broadcast. And what comes
[16:23] Speaker 2: to mind when I think about the word labor, is
[16:27] Speaker 2: what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3, that each person
[16:33] Speaker 2: is going to be rewarded according to their own labor.
[16:38] Speaker 2: In other words, what we do now, what we do
[16:41] Speaker 2: in this life, counts for all eternity. As St. Paul
[16:45] Speaker 2: goes on to say, no one can lay any foundation
[16:50] Speaker 2: other than the one already laid. That one is Jesus Christ. But,
[16:57] Speaker 2: You can build on that foundation, and you can do
[17:00] Speaker 2: so either using gold, silver, and costly stones, or using wood, hay,
[17:08] Speaker 2: or straw. And what you have built with will be
[17:12] Speaker 2: brought to light in the resurrection. It will be revealed
[17:20] Speaker 2: with fire, says St. Paul. And, he goes on to say,
[17:24] Speaker 2: the fire will test the quality of each person's work.
[17:30] Speaker 2: If what they have built survives, they will receive reward.
[17:34] Speaker 2: If it's burned up, they will suffer loss. They themselves
[17:37] Speaker 2: will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. Here,
[17:44] Speaker 2: Paul illustrates the sober reality that some Christians, I'm not
[17:51] Speaker 2: talking about secularists, I'm talking about Christians, some Christians will
[17:54] Speaker 2: be resurrected with precious little to show for the time
[17:59] Speaker 2: they spent on earth. They'll be saved, but only as
[18:04] Speaker 2: one escaping through the flames. That, of course, conjures up
[18:08] Speaker 2: images of people escaping burning buildings with little more than
[18:13] Speaker 2: the charred clothes upon their backs. And that will be
[18:17] Speaker 2: the lot of even the most visible Christian leaders whose
[18:22] Speaker 2: motives were selfish rather than selfless. Conversely, those who build
[18:30] Speaker 2: selflessly upon the foundation of Christ using gold, silver, costly stones, well,
[18:37] Speaker 2: they will receive enduring rewards. Indeed, a selfless Christian layperson
[18:43] Speaker 2: who labors in virtual obscurity will hear the words he
[18:47] Speaker 2: has longed for throughout his life. Well done, good and
[18:52] Speaker 2: faithful servant. You've been faithful with a few things. I'll
[18:58] Speaker 2: put you in charge of many things. Come and share
[19:01] Speaker 2: your Master's happiness. So while deeds are our duty, not
[19:07] Speaker 2: the smallest act of kindness will go without its reward.
[19:11] Speaker 2: Degrees of reward in eternity involve both enlarged responsibilities as
[19:18] Speaker 2: well as enhanced spiritual capacity. An experience I had many
[19:25] Speaker 2: years ago aptly underscores this important biblical reality. Well, it
[19:31] Speaker 2: turns out to be a golf illustration. That shouldn't surprise
[19:34] Speaker 2: anyone who's listened to the broadcast for any period of time.
[19:37] Speaker 2: I love golf. At any rate, I received an invitation
[19:43] Speaker 2: many years ago to play Cypress Point. Cypress Point is
[19:47] Speaker 2: arguably the most spectacular golf course on earth. And while
[19:53] Speaker 2: the invitation to play Cypress Point was free, I've seldom
[19:58] Speaker 2: worked harder to prepare for anything in my life. For months,
[20:04] Speaker 2: I beat my body into submission. I lifted weights. I
[20:07] Speaker 2: worked on stretching exercises. I pounded thousands of golf balls
[20:12] Speaker 2: all the while dreaming of the day I would physically
[20:16] Speaker 2: experience walking the fairways at Cypress Point. Without my strenuous preparation,
[20:23] Speaker 2: I would still have experienced the same cliffside vistas, the
[20:26] Speaker 2: same breathtaking views. I would still have been able to
[20:31] Speaker 2: smell the fragrance of the Monterey Cypresses. I would have
[20:34] Speaker 2: still been able to feel the refreshing sting of salt
[20:39] Speaker 2: air upon my face. All the hard work, however, added
[20:45] Speaker 2: immeasurably to the experience. And that, that is how heaven
[20:50] Speaker 2: will be. As a master musician can appreciate Mozart more
[20:55] Speaker 2: than can an average music lover. So too my strenuous
[21:00] Speaker 2: training allowed me to more fully appreciate the architectural nuances
[21:04] Speaker 2: of Cypress Pointe. as phenomenal as Cypress Point is, it
[21:11] Speaker 2: pales by comparison to what paradise restored is going to be.
[21:19] Speaker 2: I spent one day at a golf haven. I'll spend
[21:23] Speaker 2: an eternity in God's heaven. It stands to reason, therefore,
[21:28] Speaker 2: that I would put a whole lot more labor into
[21:32] Speaker 2: preparing for an eternity in heaven with God than I
[21:35] Speaker 2: did for playing 18 holes of golf And that's precisely
[21:40] Speaker 2: the point that St. Paul is driving at in one
[21:43] Speaker 2: of his letters to the Corinthian Christians. He's pressing the
[21:47] Speaker 2: analogy of athletics when he writes, Do you not know
[21:51] Speaker 2: that in a race all the runners run but only
[21:55] Speaker 2: one gets the prize? So run in such a way
[22:00] Speaker 2: as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games,
[22:04] Speaker 2: while they go into strict training, They do it to
[22:07] Speaker 2: get a crown that will not last. But we do
[22:11] Speaker 2: it to get a crown that will last forever. Thus
[22:15] Speaker 2: says Paul, I do not run like a man running aimlessly.
[22:20] Speaker 2: I don't fight like a man beating the air. No,
[22:24] Speaker 2: I beat my body. I make it my slave so
[22:27] Speaker 2: that after I have preached to others, I myself will
[22:30] Speaker 2: not be disqualified for the prize. I love what the
[22:35] Speaker 2: voice from heaven in Revelation 14, 13 says. Blessed are
[22:41] Speaker 2: the dead who die in the Lord. They will rest
[22:48] Speaker 2: from their labor. For their deeds, their deeds are going
[22:52] Speaker 2: to follow them. This is a realistic commentary on the
[22:57] Speaker 2: unity of faith and works. In other words, faith And
[23:02] Speaker 2: works must never be set in opposition to one another.
[23:08] Speaker 2: In fact, biblically, there's no context for the polarization of
[23:12] Speaker 2: faith and works. Of course, the ecumenical councils have long
[23:18] Speaker 2: settled that conundrum. And I should say, likewise have the scriptures.
[23:26] Speaker 2: As such, we must see faith. not as a momentary transaction,
[23:33] Speaker 2: not as a punctiliar transaction, not as a point in time,
[23:40] Speaker 2: but rather as a transformational way of life. Though God,
[23:47] Speaker 2: through his great kindness towards us, has justified us by
[23:52] Speaker 2: grace through faith and empowered us by the Holy Spirit
[23:56] Speaker 2: to give the cup of water and piece of bread
[24:00] Speaker 2: to those in need. Ultimately, all of that is to
[24:07] Speaker 2: bring glory to God. So above all, this Labor Day holiday,
[24:14] Speaker 2: remember the words of our Lord in John chapter 6.
[24:18] Speaker 2: Remember those words? Do not labor. Do not labor for
[24:24] Speaker 2: that which perishes. but rather labor for that which endures
[24:30] Speaker 2: to eternal life. Or as St. James put it, for
[24:35] Speaker 2: as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith
[24:39] Speaker 2: without works. Faith without your labor of love is dead.
[24:48] Speaker 2: It is a living and active faith that saves us.
[24:54] Speaker 2: So today on Labor Day, We're taking our rest from
[24:58] Speaker 2: our labors. But maybe while we're resting from our labors,
[25:03] Speaker 2: it's good to ponder, to ponder the reality that what
[25:09] Speaker 2: we do now, what we labor for now, counts for
[25:14] Speaker 2: all eternity. It's true. We're saved by God's grace. The
[25:23] Speaker 2: instrument is faith. But We are working towards an eternal inheritance.
[25:33] Speaker 2: Never forget that this life is but a drop in
[25:37] Speaker 2: the ocean of time. Eternity is never ending. And again,
[25:43] Speaker 2: what we do now will count for all eternity. So
[25:50] Speaker 2: happy Labor Day. It is a joy for me to
[25:52] Speaker 2: be able to do this broadcast today. And I'm so
