On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (04/13/26), Hank resumes his overview of the days of Holy Week, arriving at Holy Saturday, which was observed by the Eastern Church this past weekend. Holy Saturday marks one of the most enigmatic of all mysteries—the mystery of Christ’s descent into Hades. Being “put to death in the body,” says Peter, he was “made alive by the spirit through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it, only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also.” Peter here reminds us of two great and glorious truths. First, that we are saved through water, and second, that the descent of Christ into Hades inaugurates resplendent triumph. A triumph by which Christ “tramples down death by death.” Hank also answers the following questions: When a person is baptized, do they become a new creation right away, or is it an ongoing process? Debra - Stony Plain, AB (15:49) What provision does the Bible make for young children or some adults who don’t have the mental capacity to accept Christ? Robert - Tallahassee, FL (21:07) I have a cross pendant that has discolored over time. I bought a replacement, but what should I do with the old one? Paul - San Diego, CA (23:36)

[0:10] Speaker 1: with Hank Canagraph, the radio outreach of the Christian Research Institute.
[0:15] Speaker 1: Our purpose here at CRII is to equip Christians to
[0:19] Speaker 1: provide Biblical answers to life's most important questions, to read
[0:23] Speaker 1: the Bible for all it's worth, and counter the teachings
[0:26] Speaker 1: of cults and world religions that deviate from the plumb
[0:30] Speaker 1: line of God's word because life and truth matter. For
[0:35] Speaker 1: more information, to order resources or donate, call eight eight
[0:38] Speaker 1: eight seven thousand CROI, or go online to equip dot org.
[0:44] Speaker 1: That's equip dot org. The following program was pre recorded.
[0:50] Speaker 1: Now here's the president of the Christian Research Institute, Hank Canagraph.
[0:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you very much, Randy.

[1:07] Speaker 3: resources that we talk about on the broadcast you can
[1:11] Speaker 3: as always find on the web at equipped dot or.
[1:15] Speaker 3: I want to kick off the broadcast today by talking
[1:18] Speaker 3: about Holy Saturday, something that we celebrated the day before yesterday,
[1:25] Speaker 3: this past Saturday, at least in the Eastern Church, we
[1:30] Speaker 3: celebrated Lazarus Saturday, first, the day that Christ raised his
[1:37] Speaker 3: friend Lazarus from among the dead, and then a week
[1:40] Speaker 3: later the Saturday that I'm referring to, the Saturday following
[1:44] Speaker 3: Holy Friday. We're reminded that we two, like Christ, will
[1:50] Speaker 3: one day breathe our last. So, for many decades of
[1:55] Speaker 3: my life, the great sorrow of Christ's passion on the
[2:00] Speaker 3: Cross quickly gave way to well the inexpressible joy of
[2:06] Speaker 3: Easter Sunday. And yet without an appropriate emphasis on the
[2:12] Speaker 3: great and the mysterious celebration of the Holy Saturday in
[2:18] Speaker 3: between Christ's passion on the Cross or Good Friday and
[2:22] Speaker 3: Pasca or Easter, we miss something very significant. Why because
[2:30] Speaker 3: Holy Saturday marks one of the most enigmatic of all mysteries.
[2:37] Speaker 3: This is the mystery of Christ's descent into Hades, being
[2:43] Speaker 3: put to death in the body. Says Peter, he was
[2:47] Speaker 3: made alive by the spirit through whom also he went
[2:52] Speaker 3: and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago,
[2:58] Speaker 3: when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while
[3:02] Speaker 3: the ark was being built in it, only a few
[3:07] Speaker 3: people ate, and all were saved through water and this water,
[3:12] Speaker 3: says the apostle, Peter, symbolizes baptism, which now saves you.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Also.
[3:22] Speaker 3: Peter here is reminding us of two great and glorious truths.
[3:30] Speaker 3: First that you and I are saved through water, and secondly,
[3:37] Speaker 3: that the descent of Christ into Hades inaugurates resplendent triumph,
[3:45] Speaker 3: a triumph by which Christ tramples down death by death. First,
[3:55] Speaker 3: after being buried in the waters of baptism, we arise
[4:00] Speaker 3: to a radically rearranged life. We were buried with him
[4:06] Speaker 3: through baptism into death in order that just as Christ
[4:12] Speaker 3: was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father,
[4:16] Speaker 3: so too we may live a new life, a life
[4:23] Speaker 3: in which we are commissioned by Christ himself to go
[4:28] Speaker 3: to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
[4:35] Speaker 3: in the name of the Father and the Son and
[4:39] Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit. Ecumenical patriarch Bartholemew the First perhaps said
[4:44] Speaker 3: it best when he said, the Church as a mystery
[4:49] Speaker 3: of mutual trinitarian love is true to itself only if
[4:54] Speaker 3: the circle of love is being constantly enlarged, only if
[5:01] Speaker 3: new persons are continually being brought within it. Faith, faith
[5:07] Speaker 3: in the Triune God signifies that we are each of
[5:12] Speaker 3: us missionaries dedicated to the preaching of the Gospel. Well
[5:21] Speaker 3: as Holy Saturday reminded us that we were baptized into
[5:25] Speaker 3: Christ's death in order that we may live a new life,
[5:31] Speaker 3: so too, Holy Saturday is reminiscent of the resplendent triumph
[5:38] Speaker 3: that is marked by Christ's descent into Hades, a triumph
[5:46] Speaker 3: by which Christ tramples down death by death. His descent.
[5:53] Speaker 3: His descent is at at once one of the most
[5:57] Speaker 3: mysterious and i simultaneously one of the most marvelous occurrences
[6:05] Speaker 3: in all of New Testament history, an event that I
[6:11] Speaker 3: freely confess I have tragically trivialized as a direct result
[6:18] Speaker 3: of well inadequate comprehension. Little did I understand that Christ's
[6:27] Speaker 3: dissent is an inseparable part of the dogmatic tradition of
[6:35] Speaker 3: the ancient Church. It was shared by all members of
[6:40] Speaker 3: the Church, and this is reflected in the New Testament.
[6:45] Speaker 3: It's reflected in the works of the early Christian apologists
[6:49] Speaker 3: of the Fathers and the teachers of the Church of
[6:54] Speaker 3: Ancient and later writers of both the East and the West,
[7:00] Speaker 3: as well as in the baptismal creeds, the eucharistic services.
[7:05] Speaker 4: And.
[7:07] Speaker 3: In the liturgical texts. Moreover, as has been fittingly noted,
[7:14] Speaker 3: Christ's descent into Hades is referred to more than fifty
[7:21] Speaker 3: times fifty times during the services of Holy Friday and
[7:26] Speaker 3: Holy Saturday, more than two hundred times during the festal
[7:33] Speaker 3: period that we call Pentecost, and more than one hundred
[7:38] Speaker 3: and fifty times in the resurrectional and festal hymns over
[7:43] Speaker 3: the course of a whole year. Hymns that we sing
[7:48] Speaker 3: in parts, such as a day of Resurrection, let us
[7:52] Speaker 3: beam with God's own pride, Let everyone embrace in joy.
[7:58] Speaker 3: Let us warmly read those we meet and treat them
[8:03] Speaker 3: like our brothers, even those who hate us. That all
[8:08] Speaker 3: the earth resound with this song. Christ is risen from
[8:12] Speaker 3: the dead, conquering death by death and on those in
[8:19] Speaker 3: the grave, bestowing life. The words of the extraordinary polymath
[8:27] Speaker 3: and golden speaker John Demisine, through his descent into Hell,
[8:34] Speaker 3: Christ opened the way to paradise for all and calls
[8:39] Speaker 3: all to salvation. For some, Christ's preaching led to salvation,
[8:45] Speaker 3: while for others it only exposed their unbelief and adds
[8:50] Speaker 3: the venerable John Crysostom. This call is not coercive or forcible.
[8:58] Speaker 3: Everyone is called, but not all followed the call. For
[9:03] Speaker 3: in the mercy of God there are no obstacles other
[9:10] Speaker 3: and the free will of humankind. Christ is sent into Hades,
[9:16] Speaker 3: marks a quintessential historical turning point. Hades is no longer
[9:22] Speaker 3: a place of oblivion and abandonment, but it is a
[9:27] Speaker 3: place filled with the radiance of Christ's loving presence, love
[9:34] Speaker 3: that to immense sinners, just as it intoxicates those destined
[9:41] Speaker 3: for salvation. Holy Saturday iconography is rife with meaning, none
[9:50] Speaker 3: more so than the traditional icon, which portrays Christ radiant
[9:57] Speaker 3: in hues of white and blue, standing on the devastated
[10:02] Speaker 3: gates of Hades, with arms outstretched. He joins hands with
[10:08] Speaker 3: Adam and all other Old Testament Righteous encountered there. With
[10:13] Speaker 3: one arm, he unfetters Adam with the other heliberates the
[10:19] Speaker 3: Righteous has wondrously communicated in the vesperal liturgy of Holy Saturday.
[10:25] Speaker 3: To day, Hades cries out, groaning, I should not have
[10:30] Speaker 3: accepted the man born of Mary. He came and destroyed
[10:33] Speaker 3: my power. He shattered the gates of brass as God,
[10:37] Speaker 3: he raised the souls.
[10:39] Speaker 2: I held captive.
[10:41] Speaker 3: Glory to thy Cross, Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Lord,
[10:47] Speaker 3: Holy Saturday will be back in just a few moments
[10:52] Speaker 3: with answers to your questions and my thanks for all
[10:55] Speaker 3: of you who stand shoulder to shoulder with me in
[10:58] Speaker 3: the battle for life and truth.

[12:05] Speaker 5: two books in one because Truth Matters Part one equips
[12:09] Speaker 5: Christians to defend the essential truth of the historic Christian faith.
[12:13] Speaker 5: In Part two, Hank explains why life matters more and
[12:17] Speaker 5: how we can experience the height of human existence union
[12:21] Speaker 5: with God in Christ. Simply put, the map is not
[12:24] Speaker 5: the territory. The menu is not the meal. We cheat
[12:28] Speaker 5: ourselves of authentic union with Christ when we elevate the
[12:31] Speaker 5: message above the Messiah. Truth matters, Life matters more is

[15:45] Speaker 1: of the answers you need today.
[15:47] Speaker 3: Thank you very much, Randy, and let's go to our callers.
[15:50] Speaker 3: First step is Debrah in Stony Plain, Alberta.
[15:54] Speaker 2: Hi, Debrah.
[15:56] Speaker 1: Hello.
[15:57] Speaker 6: My question is when you get when a person gets baptized,
[16:02] Speaker 6: do they become a new creation right away or does
[16:06] Speaker 6: God slowly work in your life over time.
[16:11] Speaker 3: Well that's a really good question. Actually, when you are baptized,
[16:17] Speaker 3: you are enlightened by the Holy Spirit, you take up
[16:21] Speaker 3: your cross, and you daily follow Jesus Christ. And then
[16:26] Speaker 3: your growth is a transformational growth that stretches from one
[16:33] Speaker 3: glory to another. In other words, that growth is something
[16:39] Speaker 3: that develops over time, just as relationships in general develop
[16:45] Speaker 3: over time. But when you are baptized, a beautiful thing happens.
[16:51] Speaker 3: You know, Paul says, in sort of a query form,
[16:55] Speaker 3: he says, don't you know that all of us who
[16:59] Speaker 3: were bat tied into Christ, Jesus were baptized into his death.
[17:05] Speaker 3: We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death
[17:11] Speaker 3: in order that just as Christ was raised from the
[17:15] Speaker 3: dead through the glory of the Father, we too may
[17:20] Speaker 3: live a new life. So yes, we are new creations
[17:27] Speaker 3: living a new life. So in the New Covenant, we
[17:31] Speaker 3: see baptism as the means by which we enter the
[17:36] Speaker 3: Kingdom of God, a means by which, as I just mentioned,
[17:40] Speaker 3: we're joined to Christ and we are granted the remission
[17:45] Speaker 3: of our sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
[17:50] Speaker 3: And our first dying with Christ and baptism being buried
[17:54] Speaker 3: with Christ, and baptism was our.
[17:56] Speaker 2: Death with Him on the cross.
[18:00] Speaker 3: And of course there's a second death, and that second
[18:03] Speaker 3: death is what I'm alluding to. It's continual, it's dying
[18:07] Speaker 3: to sin daily as we walk in newness of life.
[18:12] Speaker 2: It is our being joined.
[18:14] Speaker 3: To Christ in his glorified humanity and in dwelt by
[18:20] Speaker 3: God himself.
[18:23] Speaker 2: So we're raised to new.
[18:25] Speaker 3: Life for a purpose, and that purpose is union and
[18:30] Speaker 3: communion with God. And in that sense, baptism is the
[18:34] Speaker 3: beginning of eternal life. And Peter writes about this baptism
[18:40] Speaker 3: when he says baptism now saves us. It is not
[18:45] Speaker 3: the mere removal of dirt from our bodies, but provides
[18:49] Speaker 3: us with a good conscience towards God. In other words,
[18:54] Speaker 3: through baptism, we become new creations in Christ.
[19:00] Speaker 6: Okay, because I am struggling, Like before I got baptized,
[19:06] Speaker 6: like I felt like I was like demonic activity was
[19:10] Speaker 6: working in me, Like I like voodoo and black and
[19:14] Speaker 6: white magic were used on me. And then I got baptized,
[19:19] Speaker 6: and I feel like it's the same things happening.
[19:23] Speaker 3: Well, remember that baptism is not a magic ritual. It
[19:30] Speaker 3: is the way in which you are enlightened. But you
[19:34] Speaker 3: enter into the community of faith, and it's in the
[19:37] Speaker 3: community of faith that you are taught in the ancient Church.
[19:41] Speaker 3: Many people before they were baptized would be under a
[19:47] Speaker 3: serious time of study and contemplation, and then they would
[19:52] Speaker 3: be baptized. So they go into the church with an
[19:55] Speaker 3: understanding of what this enlightenment represents. But baptism is never
[20:03] Speaker 3: alone ranger activity. It's always something that is done in
[20:06] Speaker 3: the context of entering into the Body of Christ. And
[20:09] Speaker 3: then once you enter the Body of Christ, baptism is
[20:15] Speaker 3: added to by chrismation, chrismation being the empowerment that comes
[20:21] Speaker 3: from the Holy Spirit, and that chrismation then gives way
[20:26] Speaker 3: to something that happens on an ongoing basis, and that
[20:30] Speaker 3: is the receiving of the energies of God. And the
[20:35] Speaker 3: receiving of the energies of God comes through the graces
[20:39] Speaker 3: that are bestowed on you in the context of the
[20:42] Speaker 3: eucharistic assembly, that is the Church. So you partake of
[20:46] Speaker 3: the Euchrist, and the Eucharist doesn't give you biological energy,
[20:49] Speaker 3: but it gives you zoetic energy. It gives you spiritually
[20:55] Speaker 3: powerful energy that is transformative in your life. So again
[21:00] Speaker 3: all of this happens within the context of the Body
[21:04] Speaker 3: of Christ. The healthy, well balanced church let's go back
[21:07] Speaker 3: the phone lines Doctor Robert in Tallahassee, Florida.
[21:11] Speaker 2: Hi Robert, Hey Hank.
[21:15] Speaker 4: Yes, I have two questions for you. One of them
[21:17] Speaker 4: should be pretty simple to answer, but the other one
[21:20] Speaker 4: I've struggled with for some time, and that is I
[21:24] Speaker 4: know that we are saved through faith alone, but I
[21:28] Speaker 4: was wondering what provision does the Bible make for like
[21:32] Speaker 4: very young children or even adults that don't have the
[21:35] Speaker 4: mental capacity to believe in Christ or accept Christ as
[21:41] Speaker 4: their savior.
[21:42] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:43] Speaker 3: Well, you know, there are a couple of ways of
[21:45] Speaker 3: answering that. But one of the ways of answering that
[21:48] Speaker 3: question has to do with what I was talking about
[21:51] Speaker 3: in the first part of the broadcast today. When you
[21:55] Speaker 3: are relieved of your body the impairments that come in
[22:00] Speaker 3: a fallen world. When you die, you are still alive spiritually.
[22:09] Speaker 3: And in the passage that I was talking about earlier today,
[22:15] Speaker 3: Christ during his earthly sojourn ministered to people, but he
[22:21] Speaker 3: also proclaimed the Gospel as Peter puts it, between his
[22:28] Speaker 3: death and his resurrection, and people can respond as Adam,
[22:37] Speaker 3: such that they are taken from hades to the throne
[22:40] Speaker 3: room of God, as it were, from the place of
[22:43] Speaker 3: torment to the place of bliss depicted in Luke chapter
[22:49] Speaker 3: sixteen as Abram's Bosom, and the early Church was quite
[22:54] Speaker 3: unanimous in believing that this message of salvation is proclaimed
[23:01] Speaker 3: to all. So the one thing we know, however, this
[23:06] Speaker 3: is parsed, is that God is absolutely just. God is
[23:11] Speaker 3: absolutely merciful, and therefore we can reliably trust that God
[23:17] Speaker 3: would never reject anyone that sincerely wanted to follow him
[23:23] Speaker 3: and was incapacitated in some way. And as I've said
[23:27] Speaker 3: many times in this broadcast, it's not the absence of
[23:30] Speaker 3: truth that damps, it's always the despising of truth that damps.
[23:35] Speaker 3: Let's go back to the phone lines. Talk to Paul
[23:37] Speaker 3: in San Diego, California.
[23:39] Speaker 7: Hi, Paul, how are you today.
[23:42] Speaker 2: I'm doing good.
[23:45] Speaker 7: I got an interesting question for you. About a year ago,
[23:51] Speaker 7: I bought a pendent and it was across and I
[23:55] Speaker 7: have a very very close relationship with God. And when
[24:00] Speaker 7: I bought it, I saw it and I liked it.
[24:03] Speaker 7: I liked it a lot, but I was aware that
[24:06] Speaker 7: the stones were man made, but it really didn't matter. However,
[24:13] Speaker 7: not really thinking about it, I showered with it regularly
[24:18] Speaker 7: and it has discolored the stones dramatically, and it's gone
[24:23] Speaker 7: from appearance wise to where people would compliment it on
[24:28] Speaker 7: it because it was so nice in appearance to where
[24:34] Speaker 7: now it's got to go. There's no way to fix it.
[24:39] Speaker 7: And so I went ahead and bought a new cross,
[24:42] Speaker 7: and I really like it. I went intil I found
[24:45] Speaker 7: one that I really liked, as Jesus right on it.
[24:49] Speaker 7: And then lo and behold, now that it's time to
[24:52] Speaker 7: throw out the other cross in my relationship with God,
[24:58] Speaker 7: I realized I already knew it, but it really hit home.
[25:01] Speaker 7: How much does cost mattered to me? I can't give
[25:05] Speaker 7: it to anybody because there's discoleration of it. It's of
[25:09] Speaker 7: no use to anybody.
[25:11] Speaker 3: Well, it's a lot of I got to answer your
[25:13] Speaker 3: question really quickly because amount of time. But I think
[25:15] Speaker 3: it's a lot of use to you because it has
[25:18] Speaker 3: a tremendous meaning that has has accumulated over the process
[25:23] Speaker 3: of time. And sometimes the cliche applies, beauteous in the
