On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (04/01/26), Hank continues the trek from Palm Sunday—when Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem precisely the way that Zechariah said he would—to Easter. Yesterday, Hank began to talk about the four-part argument that Saint Paul gives in 1 Corinthians 15, which underscores that Christ has, in fact, risen from the dead. Today, Hank moves on to the second part of the argument, the empty tomb. As it is incontrovertible that Christ suffered fatal torment, so too, it is certain beyond reasonable doubt that Christ was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea and that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. Were it not true, Christianity would not have survived the tomb containing the remains of the Messiah. As the reliability of the resurrection is undermined in the media, Christians must be prepared to demonstrate that Jesus was buried and that on Easter morning, some two thousand years ago, the tomb was indeed empty. Hank also addresses a question that comes up often on the Bible Answer Man broadcast, “Was Jesus really in the grave for three days and three nights?”

[0:07] Speaker 1: You're just in time for the Bible Answer Man broadcast
[0:10] Speaker 1: with Hank Canagraph, the radio outreach of the Christian Research Institute.
[0:15] Speaker 1: Our purpose here at CRII is to equip Christians to
[0:19] Speaker 1: provide Biblical answers to life's most important questions, to read
[0:23] Speaker 1: the Bible for all it's worth, and counter the teachings
[0:26] Speaker 1: of cults and world religions that deviate from the plumb
[0:30] Speaker 1: line of God's word, because life and truth matter. For
[0:35] Speaker 1: more information, to order resources or donate, call eight eight
[0:38] Speaker 1: eight seven thousand CROI, or go online to equip dot org.
[0:44] Speaker 1: That's equip dot org. The following program was pre recorded.
[0:50] Speaker 1: Now here's the president of the Christian Research Institute, Hank Canagraph.
[0:55] Speaker 2: Thank you, Randi. And of course this week we are
[0:58] Speaker 2: making a trek. We're making a track from Palm Sunday,
[1:04] Speaker 2: when Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem in precisely the way
[1:11] Speaker 2: that Zachariah said that he would Zachariah nine, verse nine,
[1:18] Speaker 2: Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming
[1:23] Speaker 2: to you lowly and sitting on a donkey, a cult
[1:28] Speaker 2: the fall of a donkey. And then of course we
[1:32] Speaker 2: went from Palm Sunday to talking about the four part
[1:38] Speaker 2: argument that sat Paul gives in One Corinthians chapter fifteen,
[1:43] Speaker 2: the fourth part argument that underscores the fact that Christ
[1:48] Speaker 2: has in fact risen from the dead. And because Christ
[1:52] Speaker 2: has written from the dead, we know that we too
[1:55] Speaker 2: will rise, immortal, imperishable, incle. And as I said on
[2:02] Speaker 2: yesterday's broadcast, it is so important that you take the
[2:06] Speaker 2: time to familiarize yourself with First Corinthians chapter fifteen, because
[2:12] Speaker 2: Paul there is taking a credle statement, a statement that
[2:17] Speaker 2: can be traced almost up to the time of Messiah's murder,
[2:21] Speaker 2: and he's using that credle statement as a way of
[2:26] Speaker 2: demonstrating an incontrovertible fact, the fact that Jesus suffered fatal torment. Again,
[2:33] Speaker 2: we talked about that yesterday. The fact that the tomb
[2:37] Speaker 2: is empty. I'm going to talk about that today. Tomorrow
[2:41] Speaker 2: we're going to talk about the fact that Christ appeared
[2:44] Speaker 2: and gave many convincing proofs that he had indeed risen
[2:50] Speaker 2: from the dead. This was not conjecture, this was fact.
[2:58] Speaker 2: And then on we're going to talk about what happened
[3:02] Speaker 2: to the disciples as a result of the resurrection of
[3:06] Speaker 2: our Lord. They were utterly transformed, They were scared and scattered,
[3:16] Speaker 2: and then became lions of the faith. They were able
[3:21] Speaker 2: to turn an empire right side up. And I've often
[3:25] Speaker 2: said that if we ever got a hold of the
[3:28] Speaker 2: reality of resurrection in our time, we could take our
[3:32] Speaker 2: empire and turn it right side up. So the question becomes,
[3:38] Speaker 2: are you just talking about resurrection, maybe giving it lip service,
[3:43] Speaker 2: spending a little time on it because it's Easter, or
[3:47] Speaker 2: do you really believe that Christ rose from the dead,
[3:50] Speaker 2: And because heroes, you know that you too will rise, immortal, imperishable, incorruptible.
[3:57] Speaker 2: So today I want to focus on the empty tomb,
[4:01] Speaker 2: and to do that, let me read what Saint Matthew says.
[4:06] Speaker 2: This is from Matthew Chapter twenty seven. Of course, this
[4:09] Speaker 2: is the second to the last chapter in Saint Matthew's Gospel.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Here's the words of Saint Matthew, starting at verse fifty seven. Now,
[4:22] Speaker 2: when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea,
[4:28] Speaker 2: a rich man named Joseph, who himself had also become
[4:33] Speaker 2: a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilot and
[4:39] Speaker 2: asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilot commanded that
[4:45] Speaker 2: the body be given to Joseph of Arimathea. When Joseph
[4:52] Speaker 2: had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean
[4:55] Speaker 2: linen cloth and laid it in his tomb, a tomb
[5:00] Speaker 2: which he had hewn out of the rock. And then
[5:06] Speaker 2: he rolled a large stone against the door of the
[5:09] Speaker 2: tomb and departed, And Mary Magdalen was there, and and
[5:17] Speaker 2: the other Mary sitting opposite the tomb. On the next day,
[5:23] Speaker 2: which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and
[5:28] Speaker 2: pharisees gathered together to Pilot, and they said, Sir, we
[5:33] Speaker 2: remember when when he was still alive. How the deceiver said,
[5:38] Speaker 2: after three days I will rise. Therefore, command that the
[5:43] Speaker 2: tomb be made secure until the third day, lest his
[5:47] Speaker 2: disciples come by night and steal him away and say
[5:52] Speaker 2: to his people he has risen from the dead, so
[5:55] Speaker 2: that the last deception will be worse than the first. First.
[6:02] Speaker 2: Then Pilot said to them, you have a guard. Go
[6:07] Speaker 2: your way, make it as secure as you know. How
[6:13] Speaker 2: so they went and made the tomb secure, ceiling the
[6:18] Speaker 2: stone and setting the guard. After the Sabbath, as the
[6:25] Speaker 2: first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene
[6:28] Speaker 2: and the other Mary came to see the tomb, and behold,
[6:30] Speaker 2: there was a great earthquake, for the Angel of the
[6:33] Speaker 2: Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the
[6:36] Speaker 2: stone from the door and sat on it. His countenance
[6:41] Speaker 2: was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
[6:47] Speaker 2: And the guard shook for fear of him. They became
[6:50] Speaker 2: like dead men. But the Angel answered and said to
[6:53] Speaker 2: the women, don't be afraid, for I know that you
[6:58] Speaker 2: seek Jesus, who was rucified. He's not here, for he
[7:04] Speaker 2: has risen, as he said, comes to the place where
[7:09] Speaker 2: Jesus lay, and go quickly and tell his disciples that
[7:14] Speaker 2: he has risen from the dead. And indeed he is
[7:17] Speaker 2: going before you into Galilee. There you will see him. Behold,
[7:23] Speaker 2: I have told you. So they went out quickly from
[7:26] Speaker 2: the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to
[7:31] Speaker 2: bring his disciples word. So this is again the account
[7:37] Speaker 2: of the empty tomb is told by Saint Matthew. And
[7:42] Speaker 2: this is perhaps the greatest of all testimonies to the
[7:51] Speaker 2: resurrection of Jesus Christ. Well, it is a congruent whole,
[7:55] Speaker 2: but it is a great testimony that the tomb was empty.
[8:00] Speaker 2: That Christianity cannot survive an identifiable tomb containing the corpse
[8:07] Speaker 2: of Christ. And as it is incontrovertible that Christ suffered
[8:14] Speaker 2: fatal torment, So therefore it is beyond all reasonable doubt
[8:22] Speaker 2: that Christ was buried in the tomb of Joseph Arimathea
[8:28] Speaker 2: and that he was raised on the third day according
[8:31] Speaker 2: to the scriptures. Now this is constantly been called into question,
[8:40] Speaker 2: and so as we continued the broadcast today, what I'd
[8:45] Speaker 2: like to do is give you evidence, incontrovertible evidence that
[8:52] Speaker 2: the tomb was indeed empty. And again, as we read
[8:57] Speaker 2: through the Gospel, according to Saint this was not a
[9:01] Speaker 2: common grave. This was a tomb that is identifiable because
[9:08] Speaker 2: it belonged to a Sanhedrist, and as a Sanhedrist someone
[9:14] Speaker 2: who was involved in condemning Christ to death, he was
[9:20] Speaker 2: on the very court that did that. It is unlikely
[9:24] Speaker 2: that Joseph of Arimathea is Christian fiction. So again we're
[9:30] Speaker 2: going to be talking about all of that and more
[9:33] Speaker 2: on this edition of the Bible answer Man Broadcast. And
[9:37] Speaker 2: as I do remember that this is not just a
[9:43] Speaker 2: story for me to tell you, but this is a
[9:47] Speaker 2: story for you to tell others it is not a
[9:52] Speaker 2: story in the sense of fable. It is a story
[9:57] Speaker 2: in the sense of und deniable reality. In fact, again,
[10:05] Speaker 2: as the Apostle Paul said, if Christ has not risen
[10:09] Speaker 2: from the dead, let's just eat, drink, and be merry,
[10:15] Speaker 2: because tomorrow we die. But Christ has risen. He has risen. Indeed,
[10:23] Speaker 2: as always as we go to break, I want to
[10:25] Speaker 2: thank all of you who make the Bible answer Man
[10:28] Speaker 2: Broadcast an ongoing reality for people, not just in America
[10:34] Speaker 2: but around the world. Thank you for standing shoulder to

[14:01] Speaker 3: Truth Matters, Life Matters More by Hank Hannigraph is essentially
[14:05] Speaker 3: two books in one because truth Matters. Part one equips
[14:09] Speaker 3: Christians to defend the essential truth of the historic Christian faith.
[14:13] Speaker 3: In Part two, Hank explains why life matters more and
[14:17] Speaker 3: how we can experience the height of human existence union
[14:21] Speaker 3: with God in Christ. Simply put, the map is not
[14:24] Speaker 3: the territory, the menu is not the meal. We cheat
[14:27] Speaker 3: ourselves of authentic union with Christ when we elevate the
[14:31] Speaker 3: message above the Messiah. Truth matters, Life matters More is
[14:36] Speaker 3: a modern classic and the magnum opus of one of

[15:07] Speaker 1: And now here's Hank Canagraph.
[15:09] Speaker 2: Thank you so much for Randy. And as I said
[15:11] Speaker 2: before the break, it is incontrovertible that Jesus Christ suffered
[15:17] Speaker 2: fatal torment. But it is also beyond reasonable doubt that
[15:24] Speaker 2: Jesus Christ was buried in the tomb of Joseph of
[15:28] Speaker 2: Arimathea and that he was raised on the third day.
[15:33] Speaker 2: According to the scriptures. As the reliability of the resurrection
[15:40] Speaker 2: was undermined in so many different venues and in magazines,
[15:47] Speaker 2: in manuscripts, and movies, it became increasingly critical to look
[15:55] Speaker 2: at the rationale for believing that Jesus was buried in
[15:59] Speaker 2: the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, and and that on
[16:04] Speaker 2: Easter morning some two thousand years ago the tomb was
[16:10] Speaker 2: indeed empty. Now again, this is not blind faith. This
[16:17] Speaker 2: is faith founded on a refutable fact. Let me start
[16:22] Speaker 2: by saying this. It is heartening to discover that the
[16:29] Speaker 2: late liberal Cambridge scholar John A. T. Robinson, and I
[16:34] Speaker 2: mention him because many people know his name, he conceded
[16:40] Speaker 2: that the burial of Jesus Christ is and let me
[16:44] Speaker 2: read what he said. It's one of the earliest and
[16:48] Speaker 2: best attested facts about Jesus. This is a liberal scholar,
[16:54] Speaker 2: and his affirmation turns out to be more than just
[16:59] Speaker 2: adulor medic assertion. It's a defensible argument. In fact, let
[17:06] Speaker 2: me go so far as to say that liberal New
[17:08] Speaker 2: Testament scholars such as Robinson, in concert with conservative scholarship,
[17:16] Speaker 2: agree that the body of Jesus was buried in the
[17:21] Speaker 2: private tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, and as I said
[17:26] Speaker 2: before the break, as a san hidrist one in the
[17:31] Speaker 2: court that condemns Christ to death, he is unlikely to
[17:36] Speaker 2: be the figment of a fertile imagination. It's also striking
[17:41] Speaker 2: that no alternative burial account occurs in the entire historical record.
[17:50] Speaker 2: Scholars also agree that the tomb quickly lost its significance.
[17:55] Speaker 2: Why because the remains of Christ were not there to
[17:58] Speaker 2: be venerated. And that's noteworthy in that the graves of
[18:02] Speaker 2: sages were profoundly reverenced. And let me add this that
[18:10] Speaker 2: the account of jesus burial in the tomb of Joseph
[18:12] Speaker 2: Armathea has put forth in the Gospels is far too
[18:18] Speaker 2: early to have been the stuff of myth or legend.
[18:23] Speaker 2: And you can add to this the reality of the
[18:25] Speaker 2: gospel writers highlight women as heroes of the empty tomb accounts. Now,
[18:33] Speaker 2: this is important because if you consider that females were
[18:36] Speaker 2: routinely considered little more than chattel, the empty tomb accounts
[18:43] Speaker 2: are powerful evidence that the Gospel writers value truth over
[18:49] Speaker 2: cultural correctness prior to the coming of Christ. And again
[18:56] Speaker 2: this is the historical context. Females were so denigrated by
[19:03] Speaker 2: society that first century males routinely mouthed the mantra, I
[19:12] Speaker 2: thank THEE that I'm not a woman. Had the Gospel
[19:17] Speaker 2: accounts been legendary, I can tell you this, males most
[19:23] Speaker 2: certainly would have been the heroes of the narrative. Now,
[19:29] Speaker 2: I think it's also heartening to realize that Jewish antagonists
[19:36] Speaker 2: take the empty tomb account for granted. Instead of repudiating
[19:41] Speaker 2: the empty tomb, they accused Christ's disciples of stealing his body.
[19:48] Speaker 2: And had the tomb not been empty, enemies, you can
[19:51] Speaker 2: imagine this, enemies of the resurrection could have easily put
[19:55] Speaker 2: an end to the pretense by displaying the remains of Christ.
[20:02] Speaker 2: Here's the bottom line, and the centuries following the resurrection
[20:05] Speaker 2: of Jesus Christ, the fact of the empty tomb was
[20:08] Speaker 2: forwarded by friends and foes alike. Let me put it bluntly,
[20:14] Speaker 2: the tomb was empty. Were it not, Christianity could not
[20:20] Speaker 2: have survived the tomb containing the remains of Messiah. Well.
[20:27] Speaker 2: As the reliability of the resurrection is undermined in the media,
[20:31] Speaker 2: it is so crucial that you and I, as Christians,
[20:34] Speaker 2: are prepared to demonstrate that Jesus was buried, and that
[20:39] Speaker 2: on Easter morning some two thousand years ago, the tomb
[20:43] Speaker 2: was indeed empty. Now I'm going to pick that up
[20:49] Speaker 2: and to Mare's edition of the Bible Lanceman Broadcast when
[20:51] Speaker 2: we talk about the appearances of Christ. But right now
[20:54] Speaker 2: I want to answer a question that I've been asked
[20:56] Speaker 2: so often on the Bible lance Man Broadcast, and that
[20:59] Speaker 2: is the question was Jesus really in the grave for
[21:02] Speaker 2: three days and three nights? And I raised that question
[21:06] Speaker 2: because skeptics so often point to this as an inconsistency
[21:11] Speaker 2: in the Biblical text. Now, Jesus specifically said, as Joan,
[21:16] Speaker 2: it was three days and three nights in the belly
[21:20] Speaker 2: of the huge fish. So the son of Man will
[21:24] Speaker 2: be three days and three nights in the heart of
[21:26] Speaker 2: the earth. The Gospels also tell us that Jesus died
[21:33] Speaker 2: on the day before the Sabbath or on Friday, and
[21:37] Speaker 2: then rose on the day after the Sabbath or on Sunday.
[21:41] Speaker 2: So how do you resolve this kind of apparent contradiction,
[21:46] Speaker 2: the operative word being apparent. Well, you do that in
[21:50] Speaker 2: three ways. The first is that in Jewish idiom any
[21:54] Speaker 2: part of a day counted as a day night unit,
[21:58] Speaker 2: and thus there is absolutely no need whatsoever to demand
[22:03] Speaker 2: that a literal seventy two hours has to be accounted for.
[22:09] Speaker 2: In fact, this way of speaking in reference to time
[22:13] Speaker 2: is particularly evident in light of Jesus's own contention that
[22:19] Speaker 2: he would rise on the third day, not after the
[22:23] Speaker 2: third day and night had ended. There's a second point,
[22:28] Speaker 2: and that is that the Gospels unanimously declare that Jesus
[22:33] Speaker 2: died on the day of preparation, in other words, on Friday,
[22:39] Speaker 2: the day leading up to the beginning of the Sabbath
[22:43] Speaker 2: at sundown. The Gospel writers demonstrate complete unanimity regarding the
[22:51] Speaker 2: discovery of Jesus' resurrection early in the morning on the
[22:59] Speaker 2: day following the Sabbath as well, and that, of course,
[23:04] Speaker 2: is Sunday, the first day of the week. And thus
[23:07] Speaker 2: to suggest, as some have, that Jesus died on Wednesday
[23:11] Speaker 2: and rose on Saturday, or died on Thursday and rose
[23:15] Speaker 2: on Sunday, directly contradicts the testimony of the four Gospel writers.
[23:22] Speaker 2: So you can't go there. And that leaves us with
[23:26] Speaker 2: one more point that I want to make in this regard,
[23:28] Speaker 2: and that is, once knowledge of ancient culturally informed modes
[23:34] Speaker 2: of oral and literary expression replace a naive literalistic interpretation
[23:39] Speaker 2: of God's word. The majestic harmony of scripture shines through Indeed,
[23:48] Speaker 2: Christ's sacrificial death, his miraculous resurrection on the third Day
[23:54] Speaker 2: is the glorious archetypal fulfillment of old Testament types, including
[24:03] Speaker 2: the passover lamb, including Jonas's preservation for three days and
[24:10] Speaker 2: three nights in the belly of a huge fish, and
[24:14] Speaker 2: including the restoration of Israel on the third day, as
[24:18] Speaker 2: prophesied by the prophet Hoseiah. So people try to make
[24:24] Speaker 2: a big deal out of the idea that Jesus wasn't
[24:28] Speaker 2: in the grave for exactly seventy two hours, but the
[24:31] Speaker 2: Biblical text actually not only does not necessitate that, but
[24:37] Speaker 2: it actually communicates that Jesus was in the grave, according
[24:41] Speaker 2: to Hebrew Idiom for parts of three days and nights. Well, again,
[24:50] Speaker 2: I think that the point that I want to make
[24:52] Speaker 2: overall is the tomb is empty. Jesus was buried in
[24:56] Speaker 2: the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, and that Christianity could
[25:04] Speaker 2: not survive an identifiable tomb containing the corpse of Christ.
[25:09] Speaker 2: Again on tomorrow's broadcast, I'm going to talk about the
[25:11] Speaker 2: appearances of Jesus Christ. He appeared first to Peter, then
[25:16] Speaker 2: to the Twelve. After that he appeared to more than
[25:18] Speaker 2: five hundred the Brothers at the same time, most of whom,
[25:21] Speaker 2: says Saint Paul, are living, though some have fallen asleep.
[25:24] Speaker 2: That he appeared to James, then to all the Apostles,
[25:26] Speaker 2: and last of all he appeared to me. Also. This
[25:30] Speaker 2: is going to be exciting because the appearances absolutely transformed
[25:36] Speaker 2: those to whom Christ appeared. See you tomorrow.
[25:40] Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us for the Bible answer Man broadcast.
[25:44] Speaker 1: In today's post truth culture of confusion, the Christian Research
