[0:39] Speaker 1: was pre recorded to start today's Bible answer Man Broadcast.
[0:44] Speaker 1: Here's your host, Hank Cantagraph.
[0:46] Speaker 2: Thank very much for Randiot. We'll go to our phone callers.
[0:49] Speaker 2: First step as Kevin in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hi, Kevin, Hello,
[0:54] Speaker 2: Hank good, How are you okay?
[0:56] Speaker 3: I'm great. I've called you a couple of times here
[1:00] Speaker 3: today I have another good one for you. I have
[1:04] Speaker 3: a friend and I talked to him a little bit
[1:08] Speaker 3: about Jesus and I wanted to find out exactly what
[1:11] Speaker 3: he knows and what he believes in. And he said
[1:14] Speaker 3: that he was an ordained minister. He said that he
[1:17] Speaker 3: was born again and he was just talking like all
[1:21] Speaker 3: that it's useless, you know, and he doesn't believe in
[1:25] Speaker 3: Jesus in the Trinity anymore. He is reading that book
[1:29] Speaker 3: misquoting Jesus and just absolutely throws the Bible away. It's
[1:35] Speaker 3: very hard to talk to him to get him into
[1:37] Speaker 3: believing anything. He said, he only believes certain parts in
[1:40] Speaker 3: the Bible.
[1:41] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm so glad that you called Kevin with that question,
[1:44] Speaker 2: because this is a common theme as a result of
[1:47] Speaker 2: the book that you referenced, Misquoting Jesus by bart Ermin.
[1:52] Speaker 2: And the way this story goes is you have a
[1:55] Speaker 2: guy who was educated at Wheaton and Moody and then
[2:01] Speaker 2: went to Princeton, and he says, as a result of
[2:05] Speaker 2: his studies, he came to the conclusion that the Bible
[2:10] Speaker 2: is simply riddled with mistakes, riddled with errors, that even
[2:16] Speaker 2: the biblical manuscripts themselves have more differences than there are
[2:20] Speaker 2: words in the New Testament. And as a result of that,
[2:25] Speaker 2: he gave up his faith and now says he is
[2:27] Speaker 2: a happy agnostic. So he says, I was a born
[2:29] Speaker 2: again believer, and I'm a happy agnostic. But beyond that,
[2:32] Speaker 2: there are a lot of people that are listening to him,
[2:36] Speaker 2: are reading to him, and are falling for the skin
[2:39] Speaker 2: of the truth stuffed with a great big lie. They
[2:42] Speaker 2: don't understand that what he is communicating or what bothers him,
[2:47] Speaker 2: should not bother him if he was not a fundamentalist
[2:51] Speaker 2: from the left, which is to say, he's a man
[2:53] Speaker 2: that does not know how to read the Bible for
[2:56] Speaker 2: all it's worth, and as a result of that he
[2:59] Speaker 2: thinks that the Bible is an error. For example, he
[3:02] Speaker 2: says that Jesus Christ is a false apocalyptic prophet because
[3:08] Speaker 2: he thought that the end of the world or his
[3:12] Speaker 2: second coming would happen within a generation. But again, were
[3:17] Speaker 2: he able to read the Bible in the sense in
[3:20] Speaker 2: which it's intended, he would never make that kind of
[3:24] Speaker 2: charge against Messiah, because Jesus Christ was not predicting his
[3:29] Speaker 2: second coming, he was communicating clearly his coming in judgment.
[3:36] Speaker 2: And again, the problem with bart Ermin is that he's
[3:39] Speaker 2: a fundamentalist and doesn't recognize that Jesus is the heir
[3:44] Speaker 2: to the linguistic riches of the Old Testament prophets in
[3:47] Speaker 2: a far greater prophet than them all, and therefore he
[3:51] Speaker 2: is using the language of the Old Testament and applying
[3:55] Speaker 2: it to the destruction of Jerusalem. Now in the promise
[4:00] Speaker 2: Us that Jesus Christ would come in judgment there is
[4:04] Speaker 2: imbued the promise ultimately that he will appear a second time.
[4:10] Speaker 2: Because he appeared as he said he would, we can
[4:15] Speaker 2: bank on the fact that the Bible is correct in
[4:19] Speaker 2: saying that he will come again. He will appear a
[4:23] Speaker 2: second time, he will put all things to right. But again,
[4:28] Speaker 2: this underscores the fact that we need to learn how
[4:32] Speaker 2: to read the Bible for all it's worth. Because it's
[4:34] Speaker 2: not just your friend, it is thousands of people that
[4:39] Speaker 2: are falling for the rhetoric of men like Bartiermann. And
[4:44] Speaker 2: the reason they fall for it is because they don't
[4:47] Speaker 2: know how to read the Bible in the sense in
[4:50] Speaker 2: which it's intended. And this is one of the reasons
[4:54] Speaker 2: I spend a lot of time on this very subject
[4:57] Speaker 2: in my book Has God Spoken? I want to go
[4:59] Speaker 2: back to the phone lines to to otis listening of Oklahoma, Hiotis,
[5:03] Speaker 2: how are you doing it? I'm good talking to you.
[5:07] Speaker 4: Okay. Here's the deal I'm studying about when I hear
[5:12] Speaker 4: when I hear people say that we have free will
[5:17] Speaker 4: to accept Christ, and the Bible teaches against that. You
[5:22] Speaker 4: have all passageses, a whole lot of passages, and John
[5:24] Speaker 4: he says that we're born out of blood, nor the
[5:27] Speaker 4: will of the flesh. But by God, he's the one
[5:30] Speaker 4: who quickened us. And if he's the one who's burthen
[5:32] Speaker 4: us and being born again from above, how are we
[5:35] Speaker 4: choosing to accept Christ? The Bible doesn't teach that. The
[5:39] Speaker 4: Bible teaches total the privty when it comes to man,
[5:42] Speaker 4: None righteous, not one. None seeks out to God, none understanding.
[5:47] Speaker 4: So if he's putting that in us, how do we
[5:49] Speaker 4: say that it's our will that done? That? We can't
[5:53] Speaker 4: say that?
[5:54] Speaker 2: Well? Is that your position?
[5:56] Speaker 4: Absolutely? Because in order to say that we have free will,
[6:01] Speaker 4: that means we can choose and make a decision without
[6:05] Speaker 4: any external coheresion. And if God's writing this in our heart,
[6:09] Speaker 4: how in the world do we think that we can
[6:12] Speaker 4: BTh ourselves into the kingdom of God.
[6:14] Speaker 2: So it's your position that God is the author of evil.
[6:17] Speaker 4: Absolutely. He said, I create light, I create darkness, I
[6:20] Speaker 4: create evil. Out of Lord does all things. He said,
[6:23] Speaker 4: I kill my wound, I heal. I think that people
[6:26] Speaker 4: have a notion of a twenty first century God, and
[6:29] Speaker 4: we think that if God he ordained the murder of
[6:32] Speaker 4: Jesus Christ. He said in Acts, he said, when Paul
[6:37] Speaker 4: and Peter got beat by some of the guys that
[6:40] Speaker 4: was against Christ. He goes Harod was there, Pott was there,
[6:45] Speaker 4: the Jews was there, the Gentiles were there, yell and
[6:47] Speaker 4: crucify him, all to do what die hand has determined.
[6:52] Speaker 4: God determines everything. God does not make God evil. I
[6:55] Speaker 4: stopped trying to figure God out and realize that God
[7:00] Speaker 4: I can't think like he think, nor my thoughts like
[7:04] Speaker 4: his thoughts. And if he says that he creates these things,
[7:08] Speaker 4: it does not make him evil. He can do whatever
[7:11] Speaker 4: he wants with his clay. If he choose to take
[7:14] Speaker 4: some client and say I want this part and I
[7:17] Speaker 4: don't want I want this vessel for wrap, I want
[7:19] Speaker 4: this vessel of mercy because there's nothing we can do
[7:23] Speaker 4: us at our best stage is vanity?
[7:26] Speaker 2: Just out of curiosity. When Paul quotes those words, where
[7:30] Speaker 2: is he quoting from about the none? No? About that
[7:34] Speaker 2: God can create people just as he wants to create them,
[7:39] Speaker 2: because he's the potter and there's a class.
[7:42] Speaker 4: Well, that's in Romans.
[7:43] Speaker 2: I believe in Romans chapter nine. But what passage is
[7:47] Speaker 2: he quoting? He is quoting Jeremiah eighteen and Isaiah twenty nine,
[7:53] Speaker 2: and the point I'm making, and by the way, congratulations
[7:56] Speaker 2: to you. A lot of people want to off escate,
[7:59] Speaker 2: but you directly communicated your position. The logical consequence of
[8:06] Speaker 2: your position is that God is the author of evil.
[8:10] Speaker 2: The logical consequence of a position that I would hold
[8:14] Speaker 2: is that God is not the author of evil, that
[8:16] Speaker 2: God created the potential for evil, that human beings actualize
[8:20] Speaker 2: that evil. But you bit the bullet and you took
[8:23] Speaker 2: it to its logical conclusion, and you directly stated it.
[8:27] Speaker 2: The only caution I would have with respect to your
[8:30] Speaker 2: position is that you want to make sure that in
[8:33] Speaker 2: arguing for your position, you use the text properly, because
[8:37] Speaker 2: the point in Romans chapter nine is not that God
[8:41] Speaker 2: can do anything. Obviously, God cannot do anything. God cannot
[8:46] Speaker 2: create evil. And when you look at passages such as
[8:51] Speaker 2: another passage that you quote, where Isaiah forty five says
[8:55] Speaker 2: I am the Lord and there is none else. I
[8:58] Speaker 2: form the light and I create the darkness. I make
[9:01] Speaker 2: peace and create evil, does that really make God the
[9:06] Speaker 2: author of evil? Obviously not. This is what is commonly
[9:11] Speaker 2: referred to as an antithetical parallelism. In other words, first
[9:16] Speaker 2: light is contrasted with darkness. Then peace is contrasted with
[9:23] Speaker 2: its opposite, which is variously rendered evil, calamity, or disaster,
[9:30] Speaker 2: which ultimately is judgment in response to sin. So I
[9:37] Speaker 2: would say, congratulations, you're being forthright, direct and honest in
[9:42] Speaker 2: your opinion, but you need to be careful in espousing
[9:46] Speaker 2: that particular position that you don't make a secondary mistake
[9:50] Speaker 2: where you're taking the meaning of Paul in Romans out
[9:54] Speaker 2: of context or the meaning of Isaiah out of context.
[9:58] Speaker 2: You need to make sure that to forcefully communicate your point,
[10:03] Speaker 2: which is a point that's held by a lot of
[10:05] Speaker 2: wonderful Christians, that you also correctly communicate the passages, because
[10:12] Speaker 2: I don't think most people holding your position would use
[10:15] Speaker 2: these passages in the way that you've used them, although
[10:18] Speaker 2: some would use Romans chapter nine in that way. Obviously,
[10:22] Speaker 2: if you look at the passages that Paul is quoting,
[10:24] Speaker 2: he can textualizes that by the Old Testament in Toto,
[10:29] Speaker 2: which is to say, if you read the whole passage
[10:32] Speaker 2: in Jeremiah eighteen or Isaiah twenty nine, you realize that
[10:35] Speaker 2: God doesn't do what he does because he's the potter,
[10:38] Speaker 2: and where the clay acting against his character rather he does.
[10:42] Speaker 2: It creates ignoble vessels because they respond in rebellion, and
[10:48] Speaker 2: noble vessels because they respond in obedience. Appreciate your call.
[10:54] Speaker 2: We will be right back with more of your questions
[10:57] Speaker 2: on the other side of the break, So please don't
[10:59] Speaker 2: touch that.
[11:01] Speaker 1: Pastor Martin Nimoler spent the last seven years of Nazi
[11:04] Speaker 1: rule in concentration camps. Reflecting on the camps where millions
[11:08] Speaker 1: would die, Nimoler said, first they came for the Socialists,
[11:12] Speaker 1: and I did not speak out because I was not
[11:15] Speaker 1: a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionist and
[11:18] Speaker 1: I did not speak out because I was not a
[11:21] Speaker 1: trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I
[11:24] Speaker 1: did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
[11:27] Speaker 1: Then they came for me and there was no one
[11:30] Speaker 1: left to speak for me. To ensure that your voice

[15:09] Speaker 2: Thank you, Brandean. Let's go back to the phone lines.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Doctor Ellwood next in Kansas, Hey Elwood?
[15:16] Speaker 6: Hi?
[15:16] Speaker 7: Thank How are you done good? How are you fine?
[15:20] Speaker 7: Thank you? Okay. I'm still in the King James version,
[15:25] Speaker 7: in part because it's still my favorite version. Isaiah seven
[15:28] Speaker 7: fourteen says, Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold,
[15:34] Speaker 7: a virgin shall conceive and bearisan, and shall call his
[15:38] Speaker 7: name Emmanuel. And has that ever been that prophecy ever
[15:42] Speaker 7: been fulfilled?
[15:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, the prophecy was fulfilled in Isaiah chapter eight, first
[15:48] Speaker 2: of all, but it's ultimately fulfilled in our Lord and Savior,
[15:52] Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. This is an example of what's called typological prophecy,
[15:58] Speaker 2: which is different from predictive prophecy. Predictive prophecies are straightforward prophecies,
[16:03] Speaker 2: such as what you find in Micah chapter five, where
[16:07] Speaker 2: Jesus is prophesied to be born in Bethlehem Ephreta, and
[16:12] Speaker 2: that is fulfilled in a direct predictive way, so it's
[16:17] Speaker 2: the fulfillment of predictive prophecy. This, however, is called typological prophecy,
[16:23] Speaker 2: first fulfilled in Isaiah chapter eight and typologically fulfilled in
[16:30] Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. And this is one of those incredible features
[16:35] Speaker 2: of the book that I wrote as God Spoken. One
[16:38] Speaker 2: of the chapters is on typological prophecy, and what I
[16:42] Speaker 2: do is I talk about this conversation which goes on
[16:47] Speaker 2: between Matt who's a new Christian and he's zealous for
[16:50] Speaker 2: the things of God, and he finds a book on
[16:53] Speaker 2: evidences and begins memorizing a list of prophecies made in
[16:56] Speaker 2: the Old Testament fulfilled in the New and his favorite
[16:59] Speaker 2: is this prophecy, the virgin birth prophecy of Isaiah seven fourteen.
[17:05] Speaker 2: And he thought, if ever there was a clear cut
[17:08] Speaker 2: case of fulfilled prophecy, that was it. But he doesn't
[17:12] Speaker 2: recognize the difference between predictive prophecy and typological prophecy. So
[17:17] Speaker 2: when he goes to his coworker and starts to talk
[17:19] Speaker 2: about it, he immediately gets into a ringer and he
[17:22] Speaker 2: doesn't know how to extract himself. And the story starts
[17:26] Speaker 2: to then explain the difference between typological prophecy and predictive prophecy,
[17:32] Speaker 2: and if we don't understand the difference the conundrum that
[17:37] Speaker 2: that causes, it doesn't end up helping us to share
[17:41] Speaker 2: our faith, but ends up making our faith look weak
[17:45] Speaker 2: and powerless. So again that's laid down in my book.
[17:48] Speaker 2: Has God spoken back to our phone callers? Next up
[17:52] Speaker 2: is Tiffany. She's listening in Saint Louis, Missouri. Hig Tiffany, Hi,
[17:57] Speaker 2: nice for you, It's nice to talk to you.
[18:00] Speaker 6: My question is, okay, I have a friend that tells
[18:03] Speaker 6: me that Jesus was not born of a virgin birth,
[18:07] Speaker 6: that virgin in Hebrew only means young girl, and that
[18:12] Speaker 6: when Mary became pregnant, she was actually pregnant by Joseph
[18:17] Speaker 6: and he hid her because what they did was wrong.
[18:20] Speaker 6: And I'm trying to find out exactly, you know, across
[18:26] Speaker 6: from my understanding and from when I read, I see
[18:30] Speaker 6: that Jesus was actually born a virgin birth. I mean that,
[18:33] Speaker 6: and I don't understand how come somebody can, you know,
[18:37] Speaker 6: come up with another story when they read it. And
[18:40] Speaker 6: another thing I have to say is that I go
[18:42] Speaker 6: to church on a Sunday and this person says that
[18:46] Speaker 6: when I go to church on Sundays. I'm worshiping a
[18:50] Speaker 6: son God and not actual the God of the Bible,
[18:53] Speaker 6: and that his name really isn't Jesus, and so on
[18:56] Speaker 6: and so forth, And I wanna know, well, you're take
[19:00] Speaker 6: on it. You know what do I say or do
[19:03] Speaker 6: I even say anything?
[19:04] Speaker 2: Yes? I mean we want to use all these as
[19:07] Speaker 2: opportunities to reach as opposed to repel. Every opportunity becomes
[19:13] Speaker 2: an opportunity to be equipped for evangelism. I've often said
[19:18] Speaker 2: that the issue is never evangelism, but equipping for evangelism.
[19:22] Speaker 2: So you're asked these kinds of questions, and what does
[19:25] Speaker 2: it do? It drives you into learning, And as you learn,
[19:28] Speaker 2: you can use your will reason to answer as an
[19:30] Speaker 2: opportunity or a springboard to share the truth and the
[19:35] Speaker 2: love and the life that Jesus Christ can bring to
[19:38] Speaker 2: another human heart by which that human heart can be
[19:42] Speaker 2: transformed so that that person can experience what you are
[19:46] Speaker 2: now experiencing life, That is life. Indeed, as far as
[19:52] Speaker 2: the actual questions are concerned, let's look at this. Jesus
[19:57] Speaker 2: Christ is born of a virgin. The text tells us that,
[20:02] Speaker 2: in fact, the Isaiah seven fourteen passage is typologically fulfilled
[20:09] Speaker 2: in Jesus Christ. So we see that while Isaiah's wife
[20:15] Speaker 2: was in fact a young woman with child, Jesus Christ
[20:21] Speaker 2: was born of a virgin. So you see escalation and
[20:26] Speaker 2: heightening in the fulfillment of the prophecy in Jesus Christ
[20:31] Speaker 2: and the text actually telling us that Jesus Christ was
[20:36] Speaker 2: born of a virgin. But think of the alternative. The
[20:40] Speaker 2: alternative is that Mary is a sexually promiscuous young girl
[20:46] Speaker 2: and that Jesus Christ is an illegitimate child. This is
[20:53] Speaker 2: not peripheral or secondary. This is essential. Now. What causes
[21:00] Speaker 2: people to say Jesus was not born of a virgin
[21:05] Speaker 2: is that they are closed to the possibility of a
[21:09] Speaker 2: universe in which supernatural things happen. But as a Christian,
[21:15] Speaker 2: we are not closed minded on this issue at all.
[21:17] Speaker 2: We open mindedly conceive of the possibility that Jesus could
[21:23] Speaker 2: be born of a virgin because God spoke in the universe,
[21:29] Speaker 2: leapt into existence, because God can do all things that
[21:35] Speaker 2: are logically possible, which is to say, obviously God cannot
[21:40] Speaker 2: create a squared circle because squared circles don't exist. That's
[21:45] Speaker 2: not logically possible. But can God allow Jesus to be
[21:49] Speaker 2: born of a virgin. Yes he could. In fact he did.
[21:54] Speaker 2: And the reason we believe that is not only because
[21:57] Speaker 2: we believe in the supernatural, but also because we believe
[22:01] Speaker 2: the Bible is the infallible, repository, redemptive revelation. Again, not
[22:07] Speaker 2: something that is believed through blind faith, but rather through
[22:12] Speaker 2: faith in evidence.
[22:15] Speaker 6: Now I go to church on a Sunday, am I
[22:17] Speaker 6: This person seems to think I'm worshiping a sun God
[22:20] Speaker 6: and not the actual God of the Bible, because they
[22:24] Speaker 6: do everything on a Saturday, which they say that's today,
[22:27] Speaker 6: You're supposed to keep well.
[22:29] Speaker 2: Not so. And again the point of Scripture is always
[22:32] Speaker 2: a cycle of six days that you work and one
[22:36] Speaker 2: day that you rest, and the rest is emblematic of
[22:40] Speaker 2: the rest that we have in Jesus Christ, who, through
[22:45] Speaker 2: his resurrection ensures eternal life. So the Christian Church changed
[22:52] Speaker 2: the day of worship to Sunday because we are celebrating
[22:58] Speaker 2: the resurrection of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, in
[23:03] Speaker 2: whom we have our Sabbath rest. So the psycle continues,
[23:09] Speaker 2: and the day is emblematic of the rest we have
[23:14] Speaker 2: in Jesus Christ. So we obey that commandment. And when
[23:18] Speaker 2: we get together, we're not worshiping a sun god, as
[23:21] Speaker 2: though the sun rises in the east and sets in
[23:24] Speaker 2: the west. No, we are celebrating the resurrection, the rising
[23:30] Speaker 2: of Jesus Christ from the dead.
[23:32] Speaker 6: Okay, and I have one more question. Yeah, over in
[23:35] Speaker 6: Mark eleven, this really confuses me. When Jesus cursed the
[23:41] Speaker 6: fig tree, could you explain to me why he cursed
[23:44] Speaker 6: the fig tree. I'm just trying to figure out. I mean,
[23:47] Speaker 6: they say it in the Bible that it was not
[23:49] Speaker 6: its time to produce, So why did he curse the figtory?
[23:54] Speaker 2: Yeah? And these kinds of questions are often raised as
[23:58] Speaker 2: though in some way or other, Jesus Christ the Bible
[24:03] Speaker 2: is irrational, irrelevant, or is simply communicating things which don't
[24:10] Speaker 2: have a correspondence to reality. But actually, what is going
[24:15] Speaker 2: on does correspond to reality, because what's going on here
[24:21] Speaker 2: is in the morning, as the disciples went along, they
[24:24] Speaker 2: saw the fig tree withered from the roots. And then
[24:28] Speaker 2: Peter remembers and says to Jesus, Rabbi, look, the fig
[24:33] Speaker 2: tree you cursed has withered. Well, that has real significance.
[24:39] Speaker 2: The significance is seen in a lot of different ways.
[24:44] Speaker 2: A couple of things that you see here is that
[24:49] Speaker 2: the fig tree was emblematic of something. It was not
[24:54] Speaker 2: the season for figs, thus it was also not the
[24:58] Speaker 2: time for fig leaves. Thus Jesus is using the fig
[25:02] Speaker 2: tree as an objective lesson for God's judgment, which surely
[25:10] Speaker 2: will come to those who have an appearance of fruitfulness
[25:16] Speaker 2: but do not have the inward reality of fruitfulness. So
[25:21] Speaker 2: this is an example of God using physical realities to
[25:26] Speaker 2: point to spiritual truth. So it's not random, it's not capricious,
[25:30] Speaker 2: it's not without meaning. It has significant, powerful, poignant meaning.
