[1:12] Speaker 2: That's 800-606-8822. This is Health Talk America.
[1:28] Speaker 1: Yes, it is. Welcome to Health Talk America. I'm Dr.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Adam Brockman. In this hour, we're sorting through the stories
[1:34] Speaker 1: that are going to touch your freezer, your family, your treadmill,
[1:39] Speaker 1: and maybe your next conversation with your doctor. And if
[1:43] Speaker 1: you've got a health question, our line is always open.
[1:46] Speaker 1: That number is 800-606-8822. Again, 800-606-8822. 606-8822 and you can
[1:55] Speaker 1: catch everything we cover today plus more resources at healthtalkamerica.com
[2:01] Speaker 1: that's healthtalkamerica.com or our hotline 800-606-8822 so let's get into
[2:09] Speaker 1: it because there's a lot on the docket this week
[2:12] Speaker 1: and none of it is boring let's go ahead and
[2:14] Speaker 1: get started with our health headlines this week First up,
[2:29] Speaker 1: check your freezer because the FDA just upgraded a frozen
[2:32] Speaker 1: berry recall to its highest risk classification. Specific lots of GreenWise,
[2:38] Speaker 1: that's GreenWise organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at
[2:44] Speaker 1: Publix are now flagged for possible E. coli contamination, serious
[2:49] Speaker 1: enough to earn the FDA's top tier alert. And here's
[2:53] Speaker 1: the part that should really get your attention. This isn't
[2:56] Speaker 1: a one-off. The FDA is currently juggling 11 separate active
[3:01] Speaker 1: foodborne illness investigations at the same time, right alongside a
[3:06] Speaker 1: CDC probe into salmonella and E. coli tied to alfalfa sprouts. Now,
[3:13] Speaker 1: here's the consumer message I want you to actually remember,
[3:17] Speaker 1: not just to nod along today. Freezing does not kill E. coli.
[3:22] Speaker 1: It just puts it on hold. So if you've got
[3:25] Speaker 1: a bag in the freezer right now and you can't
[3:27] Speaker 1: tell me exactly which brand, which lot number, and whatever,
[3:31] Speaker 1: It's just not worth the gamble on that smoothie. So
[3:35] Speaker 1: I want you to check the label against the FDA
[3:37] Speaker 1: recall list. And if it's on there, don't rinse it.
[3:40] Speaker 1: Don't cook around it. Just get rid of it. This
[3:43] Speaker 1: is one of those stories that feels small until it's
[3:47] Speaker 1: your kid in the urgent care at 11 at night.
[3:51] Speaker 1: And speaking of things that sound small but aren't, let's
[3:54] Speaker 1: swing from what's in your freezer to what might soon
[3:56] Speaker 1: be in your oncologist toolkit, because Merck and Moderna just
[4:01] Speaker 1: dropped a significant update, one that could change how we
[4:04] Speaker 1: treat melanoma going forward. Their Phase 3 trial combining an
[4:09] Speaker 1: individualized mRNA therapy with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda hit its
[4:16] Speaker 1: primary goals in patients with high-risk melanoma and that have
[4:21] Speaker 1: already been surgically removed. Patients on the combination stayed cancer-free
[4:26] Speaker 1: longer and were less likely to develop distant metastasis than
[4:31] Speaker 1: patients on Keytruda alone. So here's what makes this different.
[4:37] Speaker 1: This vaccine isn't off the shelf. It's built to match
[4:41] Speaker 1: the specific mutations inside each patient's own tumor. We've talked
[4:46] Speaker 1: about personalized medicine on this show for years like it
[4:49] Speaker 1: was a someday, maybe someday type of concept. This is
[4:55] Speaker 1: someday showing up in a phase three trial with real
[4:58] Speaker 1: numbers behind it. and regulatory filings are reportedly already in motion.
[5:04] Speaker 1: So I don't hand out the word breakthrough lightly on
[5:07] Speaker 1: this program, but if this holds up through approval, we
[5:10] Speaker 1: may look back on this as the one where individualized
[5:14] Speaker 1: cancer vaccines stopped being a research abstract and started being
[5:19] Speaker 1: an actual treatment option. Okay, let's pivot from the lab
[5:24] Speaker 1: to something a whole lot cheaper because our next story
[5:27] Speaker 1: is one I think deserves far more airtime than it's getting.
[5:31] Speaker 1: Researchers out of Emory University found that older adults with
[5:35] Speaker 1: mild cognitive impairment and also sleep disturbances who took at
[5:40] Speaker 1: least 5,000 IUs of vitamin D daily scored over 13%
[5:46] Speaker 1: better on standardized cognitive testing than those who did not.
[5:50] Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and slow down and translate that because
[5:52] Speaker 1: I don't want you to sprint into the supplement aisle
[5:55] Speaker 1: off of just that number. This was a small study,
[5:58] Speaker 1: so it's not gospel yet. But think about what's actually
[6:02] Speaker 1: being compared here. On one side, a nutrient, it's got
[6:06] Speaker 1: a huge percentage of Americans already low in, we're talking
[6:09] Speaker 1: about vitamin D, that costs almost next to nothing. It
[6:12] Speaker 1: has this well-established safety track record at reasonable doses. On
[6:17] Speaker 1: the other side, the entire pharmaceutical industry is racing to
[6:21] Speaker 1: find anything that's meaningfully slows that cognitive decline. So if
[6:26] Speaker 1: a number like 13% holds up in this bigger trial,
[6:30] Speaker 1: vitamin D deficiency could turn out to be one of
[6:33] Speaker 1: the cheapest, most fixable risk factors we're currently ignoring in
[6:37] Speaker 1: early cognitive decline. So get your levels checked. It's a
[6:41] Speaker 1: simple blood draw, and it's worth knowing. So if vitamin
[6:46] Speaker 1: D is this week's quiet overachiever, our next story is
[6:49] Speaker 1: going to mess with something you thought you already understood,
[6:54] Speaker 1: and that's exercise and weight loss. New research this week
[6:59] Speaker 1: makes the case that exercise isn't actually the best tool
[7:02] Speaker 1: for losing the weight in the first place, but it
[7:05] Speaker 1: may be the single most important factor in keeping it
[7:08] Speaker 1: off once it's gone. The mechanism comes down to preserving
[7:12] Speaker 1: muscle mass. protecting your metabolic rate, and keeping your appetite
[7:16] Speaker 1: and blood sugar regulation on track over the long haul.
[7:20] Speaker 1: Here's why I like this one. I think it takes
[7:22] Speaker 1: the guilt out of a conversation that trips a lot
[7:25] Speaker 1: of people up. If you've ever put in a solid
[7:28] Speaker 1: month on that treadmill, watched the scale barely budge and
[7:31] Speaker 1: thrown in the towel, this research says you may have
[7:35] Speaker 1: just been measuring the wrong outcome at the wrong phase
[7:39] Speaker 1: of the process. Diet drives that initial weight loss. Exercise
[7:44] Speaker 1: is what stands guard over it afterward. So don't Go
[7:48] Speaker 1: out and fire your gym membership because the scale isn't
[7:51] Speaker 1: cooperating yet. It's doing a completely different job than you
[7:55] Speaker 1: think it is. Now, let's close out the headlines with
[8:00] Speaker 1: one that's hard to talk about, but I think we
[8:04] Speaker 1: owe it to you straight with no sugarcoating. We're going
[8:07] Speaker 1: to revisit this story from last week with new information.
[8:10] Speaker 1: An eight-year-old girl in Louisiana died after contracting a rare
[8:15] Speaker 1: brain-eating amoeba. likely entering through her nose while she was
[8:19] Speaker 1: swimming in a freshwater lake. The infection causes rapid, severe
[8:24] Speaker 1: brain swelling, and it's almost always fatal. So I want
[8:28] Speaker 1: to be straight with you rather than scare you. These
[8:31] Speaker 1: infections remain extremely rare nationally, but they're not at zero,
[8:36] Speaker 1: and they tend to show up nearly every summer in warm,
[8:40] Speaker 1: stagnant freshwater in southern states. So here's the practical piece,
[8:45] Speaker 1: not the panic. If your kids are swimming in warm,
[8:49] Speaker 1: shallow lakes or ponds this time of year, keep their
[8:53] Speaker 1: heads above the waterline when you can. Skip the dunking
[8:56] Speaker 1: and the diving in stagnant water. And for young kids,
[9:00] Speaker 1: nose clips, they're a simple, they're a cheap layer of protection.
[9:04] Speaker 1: This is not a reason to cancel that lake trip.
[9:07] Speaker 1: It's a reason to know that this organism exists because
[9:11] Speaker 1: most families have never heard of it until a headline
[9:13] Speaker 1: like this one runs. So, There's your rundown. A recall
[9:18] Speaker 1: that deserves a fridge check. A cancer vaccine trial that
[9:21] Speaker 1: deserves real optimism. A vitamin most of you are probably
[9:26] Speaker 1: low on. An exercise study that reframes the whole why
[9:31] Speaker 1: isn't the scale moving conversation. And a rare tragic story
[9:36] Speaker 1: that deserves calm awareness instead of fear. Okay, folks, when
[9:40] Speaker 1: we come back, we've got a lot more ground to
[9:42] Speaker 1: cover this hour, including a listener question, our health alternative
[9:46] Speaker 1: of the week, and a health mystery that you won't
[9:49] Speaker 1: want to miss. Stick with us. Health Talk America will
[9:52] Speaker 1: be right back. Dr. Adam Brockman here. You've heard us
[10:02] Speaker 1: say it before. Your mouth is the gateway to your
[10:05] Speaker 1: body's health. But what if your dental problems could actually
[10:08] Speaker 1: be repaired, not just patched? If you're struggling with painful gums,
[10:14] Speaker 1: jawbone loss, implant failure, or chronic dental infections, don't settle
[10:18] Speaker 1: for more drilling or medications that just mask the problem.
[10:22] Speaker 1: At American Holistic Care Center, healing starts from the inside out.
[10:27] Speaker 1: Imagine regenerating healthy gum and bone tissue, eliminating toxic materials,
[10:33] Speaker 1: and restoring balance to your entire body, starting with your smile.
[10:37] Speaker 1: Call now to schedule your consultation at 877-207-7000. That's 877-207-0824
[10:48] Speaker 1: or visit AmericanHolisticCare.com because your smile is more than cosmetic.
[10:55] Speaker 1: It's a reflection of your whole body health. AmericanHolisticCare.com. All right,
[11:14] Speaker 1: we're back on Health Talk America. Glad you're still with us.
[11:18] Speaker 1: I'm Dr. Adam Brockman, and if you're just now turning
[11:22] Speaker 1: that dial in, or more accurately, just now saying, hey,
[11:26] Speaker 1: turn it up, we're here every week digging past the
[11:30] Speaker 1: headline for the health of it. If you've got a
[11:33] Speaker 1: question of your own, the line is always open. That number, 800-606-8822.
[11:37] Speaker 3: Again, 800-606-8822.
[11:43] Speaker 1: And everything we cover today lives over at healthtalkamerica.com. That's healthtalkamerica.com,
[11:50] Speaker 1: where you can also ask your health-related question. Now, we
[11:55] Speaker 1: got a message through our website this week that I
[11:58] Speaker 1: want to spend some time on because it's the kind
[12:00] Speaker 1: of question that deserves more than a talk-to-your-doctor type of brush-off,
[12:06] Speaker 1: even though Spoiler, we're going to, say, talk to your
[12:11] Speaker 1: doctor just with a much better set of questions in hand,
[12:16] Speaker 1: questions that help you become your own best doctor. So
[12:20] Speaker 1: this question comes from Patty. She writes in that her
[12:23] Speaker 1: 21-year-old daughter was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism. And I want
[12:30] Speaker 1: to read you the numbers exactly as she gave them
[12:32] Speaker 1: to me because they matter. Her daughter had a TSH
[12:36] Speaker 1: of 83 and a free T4 of 0.4. Patty also
[12:42] Speaker 1: mentions that she's been speaking with a functional medicine practitioner
[12:46] Speaker 1: who suggested testing selenium, iodine, and iron levels, and she's
[12:52] Speaker 1: asking how they can get to the actual root cause
[12:56] Speaker 1: so her daughter isn't just handed a bottle of Synthroid
[13:00] Speaker 1: and told, this is your life now. Okay, let's talk
[13:05] Speaker 1: about this the way it deserves to be talked about. First,
[13:09] Speaker 1: the numbers, because context is everything here. A normal TSH
[13:15] Speaker 1: generally sits somewhere in the range of about 0.4 to 4.0,
[13:18] Speaker 1: depending on the lab. Patty's daughter is at 83. That's
[13:26] Speaker 1: not a mildly sluggish thyroid. That is a thyroid that
[13:30] Speaker 1: has essentially thrown its hands up and stopped showing up
[13:33] Speaker 1: to work while the pituitary gland is screaming at it
[13:36] Speaker 1: because that's what TSH actually is. It's not thyroid hormone itself.
[13:43] Speaker 1: It's the pituitary's shout into the void, make more hormone.
[13:48] Speaker 1: And at 83, that shout has turned into an air horn.
[13:53] Speaker 1: Pair that with a free T4 of 0.4, which is
[13:58] Speaker 1: well below the normal range, and you've got a case
[14:02] Speaker 1: of significant overt hypothyroidism in a 21-year-old. That's not something
[14:08] Speaker 1: we manage exclusively with Parsley Tea and Positive Thinking. That
[14:14] Speaker 1: level of thyroid failure needs thyroid hormone replacement now, full stop.
[14:20] Speaker 1: And I want to be really clear about that before
[14:23] Speaker 1: we go a little bit further in this, because I
[14:28] Speaker 1: don't want anyone hearing root cause and thinking that means
[14:32] Speaker 1: skip the Synthroid. At these numbers, replacement therapy isn't optional.
[14:37] Speaker 1: It's the floor, not the ceiling. Now, here's where it
[14:41] Speaker 1: gets interesting. And here's where Patty's instinct to dig deeper
[14:45] Speaker 1: is a smart one. Because if she can get to
[14:48] Speaker 1: the root cause, the ultimate lifelong sentence may not have
[14:52] Speaker 1: to be Synthroid. At 21 years old, with a TSH
[14:58] Speaker 1: that's severe, the single most likely underlying driver is autoimmune
[15:04] Speaker 1: thyroid disease, specifically Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is where the immune system,
[15:12] Speaker 1: for reasons we fully don't understand, decides the thyroid gland
[15:17] Speaker 1: is a foreign invader and starts attacking it. So the
[15:20] Speaker 1: very first root cause question I'd want answered before selenium,
[15:26] Speaker 1: before iodine, before anything else is this. Has anyone run
[15:31] Speaker 1: thyroid paradoxase antibodies, TPO antibodies in thyroid globulin antibodies? Because
[15:38] Speaker 1: if those come back elevated, that tells you that this
[15:43] Speaker 1: is autoimmune in nature and that single piece of information
[15:48] Speaker 1: changes almost everything about how you approach the root cause conversation.
[15:53] Speaker 1: And here's why that matters so much. If this is
[15:57] Speaker 1: autoimmune Hashimoto's, then iodine, which Patty's practitioner flagged as something
[16:04] Speaker 1: to test, becomes a two-edged sword. In someone with a
[16:08] Speaker 1: healthy non-autoimmune thyroid, iodine deficiency absolutely can cause hypothyroidism. And
[16:16] Speaker 1: correcting it is straightforward and helpful. But in someone with
[16:20] Speaker 1: existing thyroid autoimmunity, excess iodine can actually provoke more antibody
[16:27] Speaker 1: activity and make things worse, not better. So testing iodine
[16:32] Speaker 1: status is reasonable. I don't want to throw that out,
[16:35] Speaker 1: but supplementing iodine blindly in a 21-year-old with a TSH
[16:40] Speaker 1: of 83 before you know whether this is autoimmune, it's
[16:47] Speaker 1: a little like handing someone gasoline before you've confirmed there
[16:51] Speaker 1: isn't already a fire. Test first. Don't assume natural automatically
[16:56] Speaker 1: means safe in this particular scenario. Selenium is a different story,
[17:02] Speaker 1: and I think it's a smart inclusion on that practitioner's part.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Selenium is a cofactor that the body needs to convert
[17:09] Speaker 1: T4 into active T3 hormone, and there's reasonably good research
[17:15] Speaker 1: showing selenium supplementation can help lower TPO antibody levels in
[17:21] Speaker 1: people with autoimmune thyroiditis, particularly in areas with adequate iodine intake.
[17:28] Speaker 1: So checking selenium status and correcting a deficiency if one
[17:32] Speaker 1: exists is a sound piece of that puzzle, not a
[17:36] Speaker 1: replacement for medication, but a legitimate support alongside it. And
[17:40] Speaker 1: then there's iron, and I'm glad this one made the
[17:42] Speaker 1: list too, because it gets overlooked constantly. Iron deficiency, even
[17:48] Speaker 1: without full-blown anemia, can worsen hypothyroid symptoms and can interfere
[17:53] Speaker 1: with how well the body converts and uses thyroid hormone.
[17:57] Speaker 1: I'd want to see a full iron panel here, not
[18:00] Speaker 1: just the hemoglobin, but ferritin specifically, because ferritin can reveal
[18:05] Speaker 1: a storage iron problem well before a standard blood count
[18:09] Speaker 1: shows anything abnormal. For a 21-year-old woman, iron deficiency is
[18:14] Speaker 1: common enough on its own that it's worth ruling in
[18:18] Speaker 1: or out regardless of the thyroid picture. So, Here's the
[18:22] Speaker 1: root cause checklist I'd actually hand you, Patty. TPO and
[18:27] Speaker 1: thyroglobulin antibodies to establish whether it's autoimmune. A full iron panel,
[18:33] Speaker 1: including ferritin. The selenium status. I also want you to
[18:38] Speaker 1: know about vitamin D because low vitamin D shows up
[18:42] Speaker 1: often in autoimmune thyroid conditions, and it's an easy, cheap
[18:46] Speaker 1: thing to correct. And I'd want a basic look at
[18:50] Speaker 1: gluten sensitivity or a celiac screening because there's a well-documented
[18:56] Speaker 1: overlap between celiac disease and autoimmune thyroiditis, enough that many
[19:01] Speaker 1: endocrinologists will screen for it as a matter of course
[19:05] Speaker 1: in a new Hashimoto's diagnosis. Now, the part I really
[19:11] Speaker 1: want Patty and her daughter to walk away with, root
[19:14] Speaker 1: cause exploration and thyroid hormone replacement are not competing strategies.
[19:21] Speaker 1: They're not pick one. Correcting nutritional deficiencies, calming that autoimmune activity,
[19:27] Speaker 1: and supporting gut and adrenal health can absolutely improve how
[19:31] Speaker 1: someone feels. It may reduce antibody levels over time and
[19:37] Speaker 1: in milder cases can reduce the dose medication eventually that's needed.
[19:42] Speaker 1: But when the pituitary is firing off a TSH of 83,
[19:46] Speaker 1: the immediate job is to stabilize that thyroid hormone. levels.
[19:50] Speaker 1: So this young woman's body, her heart rate, her metabolism,
[19:55] Speaker 1: her brain function, and her fertility down the road isn't
[19:58] Speaker 1: running for months on a hormone deficiency that severe. Do both,
[20:03] Speaker 1: medicate appropriately now, and build the root cause investigation in
[20:08] Speaker 1: parallel with a physician who's willing to actually run the
[20:11] Speaker 1: full panel. instead of just the TSH. So Patty, thank
[20:16] Speaker 1: you for writing in and thank you for advocating this
[20:18] Speaker 1: hard for your daughter. That's exactly the kind of involved,
[20:22] Speaker 1: informed family member every 21-year-old with a new diagnosis needs
[20:27] Speaker 1: standing up for them at their next appointment. So if
[20:30] Speaker 1: you've got a question like this one, something with real numbers,
[20:33] Speaker 1: real stakes, and no clear next step, send it our
[20:37] Speaker 1: way through healthtalkamerica.com or call the line at 800- 606-8822.
[20:43] Speaker 1: We'll do our very best to make sense of it
[20:46] Speaker 1: for you right here on air. When we come back,
[20:48] Speaker 1: we've got more ground to cover this hour. Stick with us.
[20:51] Speaker 1: Health Talk America will be right back after this. All right,
[21:13] Speaker 1: we're back for more. This is Health Talk America. I'm Dr.
[21:16] Speaker 1: Adam Brockman, and I appreciate you joining us for your health.
[21:20] Speaker 1: Before we get into the next piece of this hour,
[21:24] Speaker 1: a reminder that our phone line is open around the
[21:27] Speaker 1: clock for your health-related questions. The number, 800-606-8822. Again, 800-606-8822. 606-8822.
[21:36] Speaker 1: And you can catch every segment, every resource we mentioned
[21:41] Speaker 1: in a little more than you probably asked for over
[21:44] Speaker 1: at healthtalkamerica.com. That's healthtalkamerica.com. Now, before we get into this
[21:50] Speaker 1: week's health alternative, I want to take a minute and
[21:53] Speaker 1: talk about something that I want to see in your
[21:57] Speaker 1: bathroom and in your car's cup holder. And that's the
[22:01] Speaker 1: Sprite dental defense system. Here's the thing about oral care
[22:06] Speaker 1: that nobody tells you at the dentist's office. Most breath
[22:10] Speaker 1: mints and most chewing gum are doing the exact opposite
[22:13] Speaker 1: of what you think they're doing. They're coating your mouth
[22:17] Speaker 1: in sugar that feed the bad bacteria responsible for cavities
[22:21] Speaker 1: and bad breath in the first place. You walk around
[22:24] Speaker 1: feeling mentee and confident. And meanwhile, the bacteria in your
[22:29] Speaker 1: mouth just got handed a buffet. Spry flips that entire
[22:34] Speaker 1: equation on its head because their products are sweetened with xylitol.
[22:39] Speaker 1: That's a natural sugar substitute that doesn't just avoid feeding
[22:43] Speaker 1: the bad bacteria, but It actively starves them. Xylitol interferes
[22:48] Speaker 1: with the ability of cavity-causing bacteria to stick to your
[22:52] Speaker 1: teeth and reproduce, which is why you'll see it recommended
[22:56] Speaker 1: by dental professionals, including my dentist. Spry makes gum, mints,
[23:03] Speaker 1: and even toothpaste and oral rinse, and it's all built
[23:06] Speaker 1: around this same xylitol foundation. And I want to be
[23:10] Speaker 1: straight with you. That's why I use it. My family
[23:14] Speaker 1: uses it. I recommend Spry to my patients, and you
[23:18] Speaker 1: are listeners. Spry is different because the mechanism actually holds up.
[23:24] Speaker 1: If you're someone who deals with dry mouth, especially if
[23:28] Speaker 1: you're on blood pressure medication or antihistamines, spry xylitol products
[23:33] Speaker 1: can also help stimulate saliva flow. And saliva is your
[23:38] Speaker 1: mouth's own natural defense system. It buffers acid, it clears debris,
[23:44] Speaker 1: and it delivers minerals back to your teeth. So this
[23:48] Speaker 1: isn't just fresh breath in a tin. This is an
[23:52] Speaker 1: evidence-based tool for supporting the oral microbiome instead of depleting it.
[23:57] Speaker 1: If you want to actually protect your teeth between dental
[24:01] Speaker 1: visits instead of just masking the problem for 20 minutes,
[24:05] Speaker 1: look for Spry wherever you shop. I'm talking Target, Sprouts,
[24:10] Speaker 1: Natural Grocers, and CVS, or visit them online at sprysmile.com
[24:16] Speaker 1: to see their full lineup. Also, check out Clear, the
[24:20] Speaker 1: makers of Spry, at clear.com. That's spelled X-L-E-A-R dot com.
[24:26] Speaker 1: They have amazing products for your nasal cavity. That's clear.com. Remember,
[24:31] Speaker 1: your mouth does more for your overall health than you
[24:34] Speaker 1: give it credit for. It's worth treating it like it matters.
[24:39] Speaker 1: All right, let's move into this week's health alternative of
[24:43] Speaker 1: the week. This one connects directly back to something I
[25:01] Speaker 1: just did an interview on, and we're talking nitric oxide
[25:05] Speaker 1: and specifically N1O1, which you can find at N1O1. com. I
[25:11] Speaker 1: encourage you to go back and listen to this important
[25:14] Speaker 1: discussion on cardiovascular health. And here's why I wanted to
[25:18] Speaker 1: circle back to this one and give it its own spotlight.
[25:22] Speaker 1: Nitric oxide is one of those molecules that quietly runs
[25:26] Speaker 1: the show in your body without ever really get invited
[25:29] Speaker 1: to the conversation. It's what tells the smooth muscle around
[25:33] Speaker 1: your blood vessels to relax and widen, which is the
[25:37] Speaker 1: entire mechanism behind healthy blood pressure and good circulation and
[25:42] Speaker 1: how efficiently your muscles get oxygen when you're exercising or
[25:48] Speaker 1: climbing stairs or just trying to keep up with your
[25:51] Speaker 1: grandkids at the park. And here's the part that should
[25:55] Speaker 1: get your attention. Your body's natural nitric oxide production starts
[26:00] Speaker 1: declining as early as your 40s. And for some people,
[26:04] Speaker 1: it can already be reduced by half by the time
[26:07] Speaker 1: you hit 50. That's not a symptom you feel directly
[26:12] Speaker 1: the way you feel a headache. It's a slow erosion
[26:15] Speaker 1: that's happening in the background of your entire cardiovascular system.
[26:20] Speaker 1: And most nitric oxide supplements on the market lean on
[26:24] Speaker 1: L-arginine or L-citrulline, which rely on an enzyme pathway in
[26:28] Speaker 1: the body to convert those amino acids into nitric oxide.
[26:33] Speaker 1: The catch is that exact enzyme pathway is precisely what
[26:37] Speaker 1: tends to weaken with age and cardiovascular disease. So you're
[26:42] Speaker 1: Asking an already tired system to work harder, which is
[26:46] Speaker 1: a little like asking someone who just ran a marathon
[26:49] Speaker 1: to immediately run a second one because you handed them
[26:52] Speaker 1: a protein bar. N-101 takes a different route entirely. It
[26:58] Speaker 1: uses a dissolving lozenge that works with the bacteria in
[27:01] Speaker 1: your oral cavity to convert dietary nitrates directly into usable
[27:07] Speaker 1: nitric oxide, sidestepping that age-related enzyme bottleneck altogether. Now, I
[27:14] Speaker 1: want to go ahead and give you a caveat right
[27:16] Speaker 1: alongside that enthusiasm. If you're already on multiple blood pressure
[27:21] Speaker 1: medications or blood thinners, you need to have a conversation
[27:24] Speaker 1: with your physician before adding any nitric oxide product to
[27:28] Speaker 1: your routine. Not because it's dangerous by default, but because
[27:33] Speaker 1: it works with real physiology. And real physiology means real
[27:38] Speaker 1: interactions with medication that may be possible, although very rare,
[27:43] Speaker 1: but keep your provider in the loop. For nearly every person, though,
[27:49] Speaker 1: Nitric oxide is very beneficial to add into your routine.
[27:54] Speaker 1: Maybe you're noticing that your energy isn't what it used
[27:57] Speaker 1: to be, or you're someone managing borderline blood pressure, or
[28:01] Speaker 1: someone who wants to support their circulation proactively instead of
[28:06] Speaker 1: waiting for a diagnosis to force that issue. This is
[28:09] Speaker 1: a well-researched approach to a problem most people don't even
[28:14] Speaker 1: know they have. Head to N101. com, look at the research yourself,
[28:20] Speaker 1: and bring it to your own doctor as part of
[28:23] Speaker 1: an informed conversation. And of course, keep being your own
[28:27] Speaker 1: best doctor. All right, that's your health alternative of the week, N101,
[28:32] Speaker 1: nitric oxide lozenges. Again, that's N101. com. When we come back,
[28:39] Speaker 1: we've got more of this hour ahead of us, so
[28:41] Speaker 1: don't wander off too far. Health Talk America will be
[28:44] Speaker 1: right back after this.

[30:01] Speaker 1: I'm Dr. Adam Brockman, host of Health Talk America, the
[30:04] Speaker 1: nation's number one health talk radio show. And today, I
[30:07] Speaker 1: want to talk to men who are watching their hair
[30:09] Speaker 1: disappear and wondering if anything actually works. Here's what I
[30:13] Speaker 1: tell my listeners. The science on hair loss is solid,
[30:16] Speaker 1: and Lock Lab has put it all in one daily pill.
[30:20] Speaker 1: Lock Lab combines three clinically proven ingredients. Finasteride that blocks DHT,
[30:25] Speaker 1: the hormone that's literally killing your hair follicles. And it's
[30:28] Speaker 1: also got minoxidil. It increases oxygen and nutrients to the
[30:32] Speaker 1: scalp to stimulate real regrowth. and biotin, the essential vitamin
[30:37] Speaker 1: your hair needs to grow thick and strong. The result?

[30:54] Speaker 1: pill once a day. Visit locklab.co, that's L-O-C-K-L-A-B.co and get
[31:02] Speaker 1: started today. Welcome to my.
[31:05] Speaker 4: House, baby take control now, we can't even slow down, we.
[31:11] Speaker 1: Don't have to go out.
[31:13] Speaker 2: Welcome to my house, play that music too loud, show
[31:18] Speaker 2: me what you got.
[31:20] Speaker 1: We're back on Health Talk America. I'm Dr. Adam Brockman,
[31:23] Speaker 1: and this next segment is a fun one for most
[31:26] Speaker 1: of our listeners because it's a mystery. Not the kind
[31:29] Speaker 1: of mystery in a game of Clue, but the kind
[31:32] Speaker 1: that shows up in doctors' offices and living rooms across
[31:36] Speaker 1: the country every single day. Before we dig in, here's
[31:40] Speaker 1: how you can leave your own health mystery for us
[31:43] Speaker 1: to solve. 800-606-8822 is the number. Again, that's 800-606-8822. And healthtalkamerica.com
[31:54] Speaker 1: is where you can find everything we cover. You can
[31:57] Speaker 1: also leave your health mystery there, healthtalkamerica.com or 800-606-8822. So
[32:02] Speaker 1: here's your health mystery of the week. I'm calling this
[32:18] Speaker 1: one the case of the weight that wouldn't stay gone.
[32:22] Speaker 1: Picture this, a woman, our patient today, and she does
[32:26] Speaker 1: everything right. She cleans up her diet, she loses 25
[32:31] Speaker 1: pounds over several months, and she feels fantastic. She also
[32:36] Speaker 1: starts exercising along the way, hits the gym a few
[32:39] Speaker 1: times a week, and here's the strange part of the mystery.
[32:43] Speaker 1: The scale barely moves faster because of exercise. Same weight
[32:49] Speaker 1: loss pattern though, roughly, whether she's in the gym four
[32:54] Speaker 1: times a week or barely at all. This describes millions
[32:58] Speaker 1: of real people. So a few months in, feeling like
[33:02] Speaker 1: the workouts aren't doing anything, she quietly lets the gym
[33:07] Speaker 1: membership lapse. Diet stays reasonably in check, and then, almost
[33:13] Speaker 1: like clockwork, six months later, 10 of those 25 pounds
[33:18] Speaker 1: have crept back. A year later, most of it's back. Now,
[33:23] Speaker 1: here's the mystery we're actually solving today. If the exercise
[33:28] Speaker 1: wasn't the thing driving the weight loss in the first place,
[33:31] Speaker 1: why did all the weight come back once the exercise stopped?
[33:36] Speaker 1: That's exactly the question the new research this week set
[33:40] Speaker 1: out to answer, the ones that we discussed in our
[33:43] Speaker 1: health headlines. And the findings reframe how we should be
[33:47] Speaker 1: thinking about exercise altogether. The headline is this. Exercise may
[33:52] Speaker 1: not be your most powerful tool for losing weight in
[33:55] Speaker 1: the first place, but it appears to be the single
[33:58] Speaker 1: most important factor in keeping that weight off once it's gone.
[34:03] Speaker 1: So let's go ahead and crack this case open because
[34:07] Speaker 1: the mechanism is where the real story lives. When you
[34:12] Speaker 1: lose weight primarily through diet alone, your body doesn't just
[34:15] Speaker 1: lose fat. It tends to lose muscle right along with it,
[34:19] Speaker 1: sometimes a significant amount. And muscle is metabolically expensive tissue
[34:24] Speaker 1: to maintain, which means it's also your metabolic safety net.
[34:31] Speaker 1: Less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate, which means
[34:35] Speaker 1: your body needs fewer calories just to run in place,
[34:39] Speaker 1: which means the exact same eating pattern that got you
[34:43] Speaker 1: your ideal weight goal can also start putting weight back
[34:48] Speaker 1: on once your muscle mass has quietly eroded underneath. Exercise
[34:54] Speaker 1: In particular, resistance training is what preserves that muscle during
[34:59] Speaker 1: and after weight loss. It's not that the treadmill burns
[35:03] Speaker 1: some magic number of calories that outpaces the food. It's
[35:07] Speaker 1: that the treadmill, and more importantly, the weight room, protect
[35:12] Speaker 1: the very engine that keeps your metabolism from slowing down
[35:15] Speaker 1: as you age and as you also lose weight. There's
[35:20] Speaker 1: more to this mystery, too. Regular physical activity appears to
[35:24] Speaker 1: improve fat-burning efficiency at the cellular level, and it helps
[35:29] Speaker 1: regulate appetite and blood sugar over the long haul. Meaning
[35:33] Speaker 1: consistent movement doesn't just burn calories in that moment, it
[35:37] Speaker 1: changes how your body handles the calories you eat for
[35:42] Speaker 1: hours afterwards. So the exercise isn't competing with the diet
[35:48] Speaker 1: for credit on a scale in month one. It's playing
[35:52] Speaker 1: a completely different position on the team, one that only
[35:57] Speaker 1: shows its value in month 12 or month 18 or
[36:01] Speaker 1: month 24, right about the time most people have already quit,
[36:07] Speaker 1: convinced it wasn't working. And that, listeners, is the twist
[36:13] Speaker 1: ending to today's mystery. The workouts you thought failed you
[36:18] Speaker 1: when the scale wasn't moving fast enough were never designed
[36:23] Speaker 1: to win that particular race. They were quietly building the
[36:27] Speaker 1: infrastructure that determines whether your success sticks around for good.
[36:33] Speaker 1: So here's my takeaway, and I want you'd actually sit
[36:38] Speaker 1: with it and use it. If you've ever hit the
[36:41] Speaker 1: gym for a month, gotten discouraged because the scale wasn't
[36:44] Speaker 1: screaming at you and you threw in the towel, you
[36:47] Speaker 1: weren't failing. You were most likely measuring the wrong outcome
[36:52] Speaker 1: at the wrong phase of the process. Diet drives the
[36:55] Speaker 1: initial drop. Exercise is the bodyguard standing at the door,
[36:59] Speaker 1: making sure that loss doesn't just walk back in six
[37:03] Speaker 1: months later. don't fire the treadmill or the weights because
[37:08] Speaker 1: it's not moving the needle today. It's working a night
[37:11] Speaker 1: shift you can't see just yet. If you're In the
[37:15] Speaker 1: middle of a weight loss effort right now, and you're
[37:18] Speaker 1: tempted to cut the movement, the exercise, the weights, the treadmill,
[37:22] Speaker 1: because it's not doing anything, this is your sign to
[37:26] Speaker 1: keep it in the routine, especially the strength training piece,
[37:29] Speaker 1: because that's the part actively protecting your long-term result, the
[37:35] Speaker 1: long-term weight loss that you're going for. All right, that's
[37:38] Speaker 1: your health mystery of the week solved. When we come back,
[37:42] Speaker 1: we wrap up this hour. Stay with us. Health Talk
[37:45] Speaker 1: America will be right back after this.
[38:06] Speaker 3: Kids don't just bring home homework. They bring home germs.
[38:09] Speaker 3: And those germs don't just stay with them. They spread
[38:12] Speaker 3: to the whole household. That's why Clear Nasal Spray was
[38:14] Speaker 3: created by a practicing physician to give parents and grandparents
[38:18] Speaker 3: peace of mind. You may not think about it, but
[38:21] Speaker 3: your nose is filtering out a semi-truck full of air
[38:24] Speaker 3: every single day. Clear isn't just another spray. It creates
[38:27] Speaker 3: an additional layer of protection in your nose that blocks
[38:30] Speaker 3: bacteria and viruses before they can even take hold. Yes,
[38:33] Speaker 3: even that virus. Supporting your body's defenses right where germs
[38:38] Speaker 3: first try to enter. Clear is a hygiene product recommended
[38:40] Speaker 3: for daily use. Drug-free, non-drowsy, and safe for all ages.
[38:45] Speaker 3: Just a quick spray in the morning and evening helps
[38:47] Speaker 3: you cleanse your nose. Don't just hope for protection. Create it.
[38:51] Speaker 3: Get Clear Nasal Spray, your daily defense. Clear nasal spray
[38:54] Speaker 3: is available at retailers nationwide and online. Check out clear.com
[38:59] Speaker 3: for our special offers. That's X-L-E-A-R dot com.
[39:13] Speaker 1: And that brings us to the bottom of the hour.
[39:16] Speaker 1: This is Health Talk America, and I'm Dr. Adam Brockman,
[39:19] Speaker 1: and I want to take a few minutes here at
[39:21] Speaker 1: the close to tie this whole hour together. Today, we
[39:25] Speaker 1: started with the health headlines, and if you're just catching
[39:29] Speaker 1: the tail end, We'll be right back. Keep an eye
[39:41] Speaker 1: on the melanoma vaccine trial out of Merck in Moderna,
[39:45] Speaker 1: because that's the kind of story that could look enormous
[39:49] Speaker 1: in the rearview mirror a few years from now. Get
[39:52] Speaker 1: your vitamin D checked because that Emory University study on
[39:56] Speaker 1: cognitive scores deserves more attention than it's getting. And then
[40:00] Speaker 1: we cracked open our health mystery of the week and
[40:02] Speaker 1: solved the case of the weight that wouldn't stay gone.
[40:07] Speaker 1: Turns out that exercise that you thought wasn't working during
[40:11] Speaker 1: weight loss was quietly protecting your metabolism the whole time,
[40:15] Speaker 1: standing guard so the weight doesn't sneak back six months later.
[40:19] Speaker 1: And in between all of that, we took Patty's question
[40:23] Speaker 1: about her daughter's hypothyroidism. And I want to circle back
[40:27] Speaker 1: to the heart of that conversation one more time, because
[40:30] Speaker 1: I think it applies to almost everything we talked about today.
[40:35] Speaker 1: Get the full picture before you settle for the easy answer.
[40:39] Speaker 1: Don't just treat the number on the lab report. Ask
[40:43] Speaker 1: what's driving it. That's true whether we're talking about a
[40:48] Speaker 1: TSH of 83 or a stubborn 10 pounds that keeps
[40:53] Speaker 1: finding its way back. And then we brought you N101
[40:58] Speaker 1: as our health alternative of the week for circulation and
[41:01] Speaker 1: cardiovascular support. Products that are built on mechanism that actually
[41:07] Speaker 1: holds up when you look under the hood, which is
[41:10] Speaker 1: the kind of recommendations that you're going to get from
[41:13] Speaker 1: me on this show. So here's your health tip to
[41:16] Speaker 1: carry out of this hour with you. And I want
[41:19] Speaker 1: it to be simple enough that you can actually remember
[41:22] Speaker 1: it Tuesday afternoon when you are jogging your memory. This week,
[41:26] Speaker 1: I want you to pick one thing, just one, from
[41:29] Speaker 1: everything we discussed this hour and do it. Check the
[41:33] Speaker 1: recall list before you make that smoothie. Book the blood
[41:37] Speaker 1: draw for vitamin D. Keep the gym membership instead of
[41:41] Speaker 1: canceling it because the scale's being stubborn. Ask your doctor
[41:46] Speaker 1: one more question than you normally would. Health doesn't improve
[41:50] Speaker 1: because you absorbed an hour of information. It improves because
[41:55] Speaker 1: you did something with one piece of it. That's all
[41:58] Speaker 1: I'm asking this week. That's really the whole philosophy behind
[42:02] Speaker 1: this show. We're not here to overwhelm you with everything
[42:05] Speaker 1: at once. We're here to hand you real information, minus
[42:09] Speaker 1: the fear and minus the hype, and trust you to
[42:12] Speaker 1: use it to become your own best doctor. Thank you
[42:16] Speaker 1: so much for spending this hour with us. If you've
[42:19] Speaker 1: got a health related question, a story or something you
[42:22] Speaker 1: want us digging into on a future episode, the line
[42:26] Speaker 1: is always open. That number 800-606-8822. Again, 800-606-8822. And you
[42:28] Speaker 1: can find every resource from today's show online. along with
[42:37] Speaker 1: everything else we cover at healthtalkamerica.com. I'm Dr. Adam Brockman.
[42:42] Speaker 1: Take care of each other. Take care of yourselves. And
[42:45] Speaker 1: we'll see you next time on Health Talk America.
