[2:20] Speaker 2: Pant I always huh why do you ask that? Judging
[2:25] Speaker 2: by Herb's wire, Johnny, you may need it.
[2:36] Speaker 4: Bob Bailey In the Exciting Adventures of a Man with
[2:40] Speaker 4: the Action Packed Expense Account, America's fabulous freelance insurance Investigator.
[2:45] Speaker 4: That's truly Johnny Dollar, a young lady by the name
[2:53] Speaker 4: of Shaherrazad kept her audience of one entrol for a
[2:56] Speaker 4: thousand and one nights with one of the longest stories
[2:59] Speaker 4: in history. That's a long time to devote to one chronicle.
[3:03] Speaker 4: But some of CBS Radio's winning seven weekday dramas have
[3:07] Speaker 4: put that record in the shade, entertaining audiences in the
[3:10] Speaker 4: millions with many times one thousand and one days of
[3:13] Speaker 4: continuing dramatic serials. Each weekday on the CBS Radio network
[3:19] Speaker 4: is a wealth of daytime drama, including such outstanding serials
[3:23] Speaker 4: as The Romance of Helen Trent, The Couple next Door,
[3:26] Speaker 4: Ma Perkins, Whispering Streets, The Right to Happiness, The Second
[3:30] Speaker 4: Missus Burton, and Young Doctor Malone.
[3:33] Speaker 2: Monday through Friday.
[3:35] Speaker 4: Follow these absorbing true to life stories, only CBS Radio
[3:40] Speaker 4: brings you the winning seven combination of top daytime dramas.
[3:44] Speaker 4: Another important reason for the different sound of this CBS
[3:50] Speaker 4: Radio station.
[3:52] Speaker 2: And now act one of yours, truly. Johnny Dollar.
[4:11] Speaker 4: Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the Greater
[4:15] Speaker 4: Southwest Insurance Company, Los Angeles office following as an account
[4:18] Speaker 4: of expenses incurreage during my investigation of the Winsome Widow matter.
[4:27] Speaker 4: Expense account out of one a dollar forty for a
[4:29] Speaker 4: taxi from my hotel in West DLA. The Greater Southwest
[4:32] Speaker 4: Insurance and one of those big office buildings on Wilshire
[4:34] Speaker 4: Boulevard's Miracle Mile her Shilling almost fell off his chair
[4:37] Speaker 4: when I barged inner.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Collar. Hi, Herbie.
[4:43] Speaker 4: Look, I know that some of those new jet flights
[4:45] Speaker 4: are pretty fast, but I only sent that white to
[4:47] Speaker 4: Pat mccrack in a couple of hours. I didn't waste
[4:48] Speaker 4: any time trying to make plane connections.
[4:50] Speaker 2: Her just flew out out of my own power.
[4:53] Speaker 4: And you're kidding, I know, But where were you when
[4:55] Speaker 4: you got the word from mccrack right here in your
[4:57] Speaker 4: own fair city. I wish I had known that even
[5:00] Speaker 4: those couple of hours could have been saved.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Ah, what's the big problem?
[5:03] Speaker 4: A little matter of a liquor store hold up? Only
[5:06] Speaker 4: I'm afraid this one wasn't so little. Then tell me
[5:08] Speaker 4: on yes you do, Johnny. For some reason or another,
[5:14] Speaker 4: these places that sell bottle goods are a pretty frequent
[5:16] Speaker 4: target for stick ups here in Los Angeles.
[5:19] Speaker 2: There have been quite a few of them over the years.
[5:21] Speaker 2: I'm surprised you ensure them.
[5:22] Speaker 4: And needless to say, premiums are pretty high, and at
[5:26] Speaker 4: least as far as our company is concerned, the policies
[5:28] Speaker 4: are somewhat limited. That is, in so far as maximum
[5:31] Speaker 4: allowable coverage is concerned, makes sense, and the whole we've
[5:34] Speaker 4: been pretty lucky, but that I mean, we've had to
[5:36] Speaker 4: pay off relatively few claims. But now in the case
[5:40] Speaker 4: of Willie Layman, who is what I laming. His stories
[5:43] Speaker 4: are in West Los Angeles at one out ninety two
[5:45] Speaker 4: to one Santa Monica.
[5:46] Speaker 2: Boulevard, and that's only about a mile from where I'm staying.
[5:49] Speaker 4: The old man opened up his place late in nineteen
[5:51] Speaker 4: fifty one.
[5:51] Speaker 2: Huh, yes, sixty one, very nineteen fifty two, he had
[5:56] Speaker 2: his first hold up.
[5:57] Speaker 4: The bandits got away with something over nine hundred.
[6:00] Speaker 2: Dollars, so he bought some insurance from us. We'll go on.
[6:04] Speaker 2: Since then, there have been seven more attempted stick.
[6:06] Speaker 4: Ups there a total of eight in as many years.
[6:10] Speaker 4: And your company must be getting a bit tire to
[6:12] Speaker 4: pay off.
[6:12] Speaker 2: No, because after the second time he know how to
[6:15] Speaker 2: use it. He certainly did.
[6:18] Speaker 4: He had a lot of medals from some German out
[6:20] Speaker 4: that he was in during the last war. Anyhow, he
[6:22] Speaker 4: suffered no more losses, that is until last night. Oh
[6:26] Speaker 4: how much in money?
[6:28] Speaker 6: What else?
[6:29] Speaker 4: Something like over four hundred dollars out of the cash register,
[6:32] Speaker 4: as nearly as the police can figure it from the
[6:34] Speaker 4: register slip or couldn't Layman tell you how much? No,
[6:37] Speaker 4: because you see Johnny, he also lost his life, and
[6:43] Speaker 4: I take it you wrote his life insurance too. That's right,
[6:46] Speaker 4: thirty dollars, I see.
[6:48] Speaker 2: Look, it's a.
[6:49] Speaker 4: Little late in the day, but if you want to
[6:50] Speaker 4: go out there check with the police. Sure, I'll be
[6:53] Speaker 4: in touch. Had him two fifty dollars deposit on a
[6:59] Speaker 4: drive your own car. I passed up one on nine
[7:02] Speaker 4: two one Santamonica Boulevard and went right on out west
[7:04] Speaker 4: to West LA Police headquarters. There I ran down Sergeant
[7:08] Speaker 4: Mike Kirby, who was covering the whole affair. Mike turned
[7:11] Speaker 4: out to be a young, alert guy on the ball
[7:13] Speaker 4: and completely cooperative. That's Ride Dollar eight times since he
[7:17] Speaker 4: opened the place in fifty one, and that's way out
[7:19] Speaker 4: of line.
[7:20] Speaker 2: I should certainly think so. In the last three stickups
[7:22] Speaker 2: have been within the past ten weeks.
[7:25] Speaker 4: Sergeant Mike contact at the insurance company, Herb Shilling, tells
[7:28] Speaker 4: me that Willie Layman managed to fight.
[7:30] Speaker 2: Off most of the bandit.
[7:31] Speaker 4: He told your Ride Dollar Layman was not only a
[7:34] Speaker 4: crack shot, but I guess he was pretty quick on
[7:35] Speaker 4: the draw. It was only last month that he killed
[7:38] Speaker 4: one of the two men to try to hold them up.
[7:40] Speaker 2: Two men? What about the other? I'm way ahead of you. Huh.
[7:43] Speaker 2: We find another man, we find the killer.
[7:46] Speaker 4: Probably it seemed like a pretty safe bet. But look, Mike,
[7:51] Speaker 4: if there were so many tries at this one place,
[7:53] Speaker 4: and so many all at once, take a draw somebody
[7:56] Speaker 4: watching over the point. We tried it, as long as
[7:58] Speaker 4: we had somebody there, you know, sitting him back, or
[8:00] Speaker 4: work them behind the corner and just watch him from
[8:02] Speaker 4: across the street. Nothing happened, but the minute we took
[8:05] Speaker 4: him away, being another hold up. Try Somehow they seemed
[8:09] Speaker 4: to know whenever we had the place under surveillance.
[8:11] Speaker 2: And more important, when you didn't, Oh what have you
[8:14] Speaker 2: got to work on?
[8:15] Speaker 7: Oh?
[8:16] Speaker 4: Nothing but a couple of bullets. I'm afraid I want
[8:19] Speaker 4: to take a run over and look at good place, Sure, Mike,
[8:21] Speaker 4: why not? Like a store was closed, but there were
[8:29] Speaker 4: lights on and the living quarters about it. We knocked
[8:31] Speaker 4: a couple of times but got no answer, so Mike
[8:33] Speaker 4: used to keep it. He had and his men had
[8:35] Speaker 4: been careful to leave things as they'd been at the time.
[8:37] Speaker 2: Of the killing.
[8:39] Speaker 4: He was lying right there, dollars though he'd come around
[8:42] Speaker 4: the end of the corner near that door to the
[8:45] Speaker 4: back room.
[8:46] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[8:46] Speaker 4: Yeah, that door also leads upstairs to the apartment. You
[8:50] Speaker 4: must have taken a couple of shots at the bandit.
[8:52] Speaker 4: You see where the bottles were broken around the shelf. Yeah,
[8:56] Speaker 4: no bloodstains or anything. I guess he missed for once
[9:00] Speaker 4: the bandit, But I'm right in the hard Johnny bullet
[9:03] Speaker 4: went in at the right shoulder, then down through his
[9:06] Speaker 4: heart and stopped against.
[9:07] Speaker 2: The lower left rib. Of course, until you get a
[9:10] Speaker 2: lab report on that bullet must be his wife. The
[9:14] Speaker 2: why she didn't answer when we knocked on the door,
[9:17] Speaker 2: He missus, Layman, Oh no.
[9:19] Speaker 4: He's here again.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Do you have to come around at all hours? Ooks?
[9:27] Speaker 2: Hold everything.
[9:28] Speaker 4: Layman had been sixty one, but his wife, Gloria couldn't
[9:32] Speaker 4: have been more than thirty. Tall, dark, She was obviously
[9:35] Speaker 4: very proud of her highly committable ficking. And she was pretty,
[9:39] Speaker 4: that is almost Maybe it was just a little too
[9:42] Speaker 4: much make up, especially around the eyes that she knew
[9:45] Speaker 4: how to use so well.
[9:46] Speaker 2: The little bell had rung in the back of my head.
[9:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, and since I'd noticed the phone booths at the
[9:51] Speaker 4: gas station next door, I had him three ten cents
[9:54] Speaker 4: for a call, Johnny. That's right, Herb, and I'm sorry
[9:58] Speaker 4: to call you at home. It's one thing I forgot
[10:01] Speaker 4: to ask you about when I talk to you.
[10:02] Speaker 2: How is that? Who's the beneficiary of all Man Layman's
[10:06] Speaker 2: life insurance?
[10:08] Speaker 4: Thank you, Herb Shillings, Act two of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar.
[10:22] Speaker 4: In a moment when padel Castro was biding his time
[10:27] Speaker 4: in a remote fastness in Cuba, only a network like
[10:30] Speaker 4: the CBS Radio network had the equipment manpower to go
[10:33] Speaker 4: in and bring out the background of his revolutionary movement,
[10:37] Speaker 4: his own words on what was to come and how
[10:39] Speaker 4: it would come about. When major news breaks anywhere in
[10:42] Speaker 4: the world, only a network like CBS Radio has correspondence
[10:46] Speaker 4: on the scene or within short range. Only news like
[10:49] Speaker 4: CBS News is global in scope and is up to
[10:52] Speaker 4: the minute as a direct report from on the scene.
[10:56] Speaker 4: That's why millions prefer CBS News on CBS Radio It's
[11:00] Speaker 4: affiliated stations to every other reporting medium for speed, for accuracy. Remember,
[11:06] Speaker 4: when the story is big, only a news gathering force
[11:09] Speaker 4: like ours can scoop it up and send it slicing
[11:11] Speaker 4: through space to your set, packaged for immediate delivery, get
[11:16] Speaker 4: it first and get it right. Make CBS News on
[11:20] Speaker 4: CBS Radio, your listening posts on the world, and now
[11:25] Speaker 4: act two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and the winsome
[11:29] Speaker 4: widow matter. After the phone called a Herb Shelley, I
[11:40] Speaker 4: went back into the liquor store, where Sergeant Mike Kirby
[11:43] Speaker 4: was still talking to Layman's.
[11:44] Speaker 2: Widow, Gloria. If you mean you don't plan to reopen
[11:46] Speaker 2: the store in all, missus Laman.
[11:48] Speaker 4: Now tightn't help it.
[11:49] Speaker 6: I'll sell this down to the first person I find
[11:52] Speaker 6: has enough money to buy it.
[11:54] Speaker 2: And then what, missus Laman? You call me Gloria? Hi?
[11:56] Speaker 2: Everybody else does? And who are you anyway? Johnny? You're
[12:00] Speaker 2: had a cop and you don't look like a dick,
[12:03] Speaker 2: mister dollars here because of the insurance involved from the
[12:07] Speaker 2: insurance company.
[12:08] Speaker 3: That's right, well, listen, Willie had some insurance I know,
[12:11] Speaker 3: I mean on himself as well as the store.
[12:13] Speaker 2: I don't know how much it.
[12:14] Speaker 3: Is, but he promised me that he'd buy some.
[12:17] Speaker 2: It was your idea that he insures life.
[12:20] Speaker 3: Sure, an old guy like him, I figured he'd up
[12:23] Speaker 3: and die sometime while I was still young and beautiful,
[12:25] Speaker 3: So why shouldn't I let him provide something for my future?
[12:29] Speaker 2: Like they say, Oh, who ever thought he was going
[12:31] Speaker 2: to die as soon as this? Whoever plan and carry
[12:35] Speaker 2: it out his murder?
[12:36] Speaker 6: Do you mean somebody planned to kill him this way?
[12:39] Speaker 2: Just where were you when it happened? Bory?
[12:41] Speaker 3: I was upstairs and dead asleep.
[12:43] Speaker 2: Look, I've told the cops all about it. Well you
[12:45] Speaker 2: must have heard the shooting. I'll say I did. What
[12:47] Speaker 2: did you do?
[12:48] Speaker 3: I put on a road and from running down here,
[12:51] Speaker 3: Well I see the cash register opening. Poor old Willy
[12:54] Speaker 3: lay in there, and when I see that he's dead,
[12:56] Speaker 3: I fall.
[12:56] Speaker 2: In the police. You didn't see anybody else down here?
[12:59] Speaker 2: I got here.
[13:00] Speaker 3: Whoever he did it was gone.
[13:02] Speaker 2: You don't seem all upset over your husband's murder.
[13:05] Speaker 3: Now you want me to put on an act.
[13:08] Speaker 6: Don't you know that he was twice as old as
[13:10] Speaker 6: I am?
[13:11] Speaker 2: Then why did you marry him?
[13:13] Speaker 4: Whoa?
[13:14] Speaker 2: You know how it is just to settle down and
[13:18] Speaker 2: let somebody else support you for a change.
[13:20] Speaker 6: Made him happy to have me around if I liked it?
[13:23] Speaker 2: Okay too? For a while?
[13:26] Speaker 4: Gee, what a bore?
[13:28] Speaker 3: Oh he did was talk about getting enough money to
[13:30] Speaker 3: go back to the old country.
[13:31] Speaker 2: Well, who wants to go back to any old country
[13:33] Speaker 2: when you can have such a ball on this one?
[13:36] Speaker 2: I know I always have, even when I was married
[13:38] Speaker 2: to old Willie.
[13:40] Speaker 6: Of course you didn't always know where I was to do.
[13:45] Speaker 6: Don't you like having fun done?
[13:47] Speaker 3: I mean with people more like your own age?
[13:51] Speaker 6: Hold that you don't answer it now, don't answer it's
[13:54] Speaker 6: the places closed?
[13:55] Speaker 2: Well it might be for me, missus Layman.
[13:58] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and listen, Johnny, if you can get me
[14:05] Speaker 3: that insurance money in a hurry, well, I want.
[14:08] Speaker 2: You to know I appreciate it.
[14:10] Speaker 4: Gloria.
[14:10] Speaker 2: How long ago were you married?
[14:13] Speaker 3: September?
[14:15] Speaker 2: Now, why do you say it that way?
[14:17] Speaker 3: I told you, Johnny, I married the old man says
[14:19] Speaker 3: he could take care of me.
[14:21] Speaker 2: Excuse me, Johnny, I got to get back to headquarters.
[14:23] Speaker 4: Ballistics Downtown is sending up a report on the bullets
[14:26] Speaker 4: we found. Oh good, Also, Bob Golden picked up a
[14:28] Speaker 4: bum in a saloon, and it looks like he's the
[14:31] Speaker 4: one that did this job, picked up the guy that
[14:34] Speaker 4: killed ly looks like it. You want to come with me, Johnny,
[14:39] Speaker 4: Well do your don't you?
[14:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, I'll go along with him. I told you,
[14:52] Speaker 2: I told all those other cops.
[14:54] Speaker 7: I'm the guy that hoisted the dough out of Layman's
[14:56] Speaker 7: liquors last night, and you.
[14:58] Speaker 2: Shot and killed him. Benny, No, I tell you I
[15:01] Speaker 2: didn't do it. That's the truth. So help me. That's
[15:04] Speaker 2: the truth.
[15:04] Speaker 4: Are you trying to say somebody else went in there
[15:06] Speaker 4: and shot him after you left?
[15:08] Speaker 2: Benny?
[15:08] Speaker 7: I don't know.
[15:09] Speaker 2: There was no reason if you'd already taken his money.
[15:12] Speaker 2: I don't know. How should I know?
[15:15] Speaker 7: You think I stuck around there after I got his dough.
[15:17] Speaker 2: How many shots did you fire at him? Benny? How
[15:19] Speaker 2: many shots?
[15:21] Speaker 6: Why?
[15:21] Speaker 7: I didn't fire none? You saw that gun the cups
[15:24] Speaker 7: took off of me. He was made a rubber, That's
[15:26] Speaker 7: all it was. It was made a rubber. If I
[15:29] Speaker 7: hadn't got stupid and got out and got drunken, showed
[15:32] Speaker 7: it to somebody and told him how I got away
[15:34] Speaker 7: with the money from that liquor store with it. You
[15:36] Speaker 7: think these dumb cups that they ever got wires to me?
[15:39] Speaker 2: You didn't fire a single shot?
[15:40] Speaker 4: How could I?
[15:42] Speaker 2: I waved my rubber gun? Hurry me.
[15:44] Speaker 4: He reaches under the counter. He comes up empty. So
[15:47] Speaker 4: he gives me the dough and I leave. You're lying, Benny.
[15:50] Speaker 4: You make a paraffine test, Mike, Yeah, and I think
[15:53] Speaker 4: this is the result of it. Well, Conroy, the paraffin
[15:55] Speaker 4: test is negative.
[15:57] Speaker 2: No sign of powder on either of his hands. Also, sorry,
[16:01] Speaker 2: you see.
[16:02] Speaker 7: I told you.
[16:02] Speaker 2: I told you I never had no real buns, all right,
[16:05] Speaker 2: then I told you all I did was rob that
[16:07] Speaker 2: Joyce went out to shut Yeah, Connoy.
[16:11] Speaker 4: Also, Sergeant, here's the report from downtown on the bullets.
[16:16] Speaker 2: Let me have them.
[16:17] Speaker 4: And also they returned that gun on mister Layman's that
[16:20] Speaker 4: they found beside his body.
[16:21] Speaker 2: There's no prints at all on it. Now, Johnny, is
[16:24] Speaker 2: there anything else to look at this? Yeah? Connoy, got
[16:27] Speaker 2: this bomb out of here. Lock him up upstairs, Yes, sir,
[16:30] Speaker 2: come on, you wise guys. Can't put no murder rap
[16:33] Speaker 2: on me. Oh yeah, we're wait. What's the same.
[16:38] Speaker 4: Listen, the bullet that killed Willy Layman and the bullets
[16:42] Speaker 4: we pulled out of the wall of that store, Johnny,
[16:46] Speaker 4: they all came from Layman's own gun.
[16:50] Speaker 2: In other words, with the help of that phony rubber pistol.
[16:53] Speaker 2: Then he somehow got Layman's gun away from him. Maybe
[16:56] Speaker 2: Layman had already pulled off a couple of shots and missed.
[16:59] Speaker 2: But the one that killed him.
[17:03] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, the paraffint test showed no powder on Benny's hands.
[17:08] Speaker 2: Then he must have worn gloves. He must have killed.
[17:11] Speaker 2: Lame that you want to bet? Then who did well first?
[17:17] Speaker 2: I think I'd better get some proof.
[17:24] Speaker 4: Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in a moment, shiable, looks.
[17:33] Speaker 6: Smart, two dates with drink, stay young, tent.
[17:46] Speaker 4: And.
[17:48] Speaker 2: Be sociable.
[17:52] Speaker 4: When friends drop in. Let your hospitality show you a
[17:56] Speaker 4: sociable in a modern manner. Absolutely no is the favorite
[17:59] Speaker 4: of the smart and young and heart.
[18:04] Speaker 6: Be sociable, look smart, two days with pepsy string, light,
[18:14] Speaker 6: refreshed sheet, stay young, there and sociable.
[18:26] Speaker 2: Have you tried to EPs lately? Oh? Act three of
[18:29] Speaker 2: yours truly Johnny Dollar, Where.
[18:42] Speaker 4: You're over looking one thing, like what, Johnny, that Benny's
[18:45] Speaker 4: a shaky old bomb of why not suppose he'd gone
[18:48] Speaker 4: into that like a store with a real gun instead
[18:50] Speaker 4: of that phony little rubber one you boys found on him.
[18:53] Speaker 2: Well you think for a minute.
[18:54] Speaker 4: He could have stood up against the crack shot like
[18:56] Speaker 4: you say Layman was. Well, Now, that's besides, how could
[18:59] Speaker 4: he get lame One's gun away from him and kill
[19:01] Speaker 4: him with it. Ever since he kept the gun in
[19:03] Speaker 4: that store, not a single hold up man has got
[19:05] Speaker 4: the better of him, even kill one of them a
[19:07] Speaker 4: month ago. That's very true, all right. I think I
[19:10] Speaker 4: can get your killer for you, only you have to
[19:12] Speaker 4: let me get her my own way.
[19:14] Speaker 2: Her. That's right. You mean Layman's wife, Gloria. That's right, Johnny.
[19:19] Speaker 4: I thought of her too, motive, opportunity, everything but proof prove.
[19:23] Speaker 2: I mean, handle it my own way. But if she
[19:25] Speaker 2: didn't do if I'm wrong, it won't be any reflection
[19:28] Speaker 2: on you on your record. Oh see what you mean? Okay,
[19:32] Speaker 2: we'll take my car, and you got to promise me
[19:35] Speaker 2: one thing.
[19:35] Speaker 4: What's that that you'll stay outside, that you won't make
[19:38] Speaker 4: any move until I ask you to, no matter what happens.
[19:41] Speaker 2: Well now, john.
[19:42] Speaker 4: Otherwise you can try hauling her in yourself. Well, of course,
[19:45] Speaker 4: if you're wrong about her. Okay, Johnny, let's go.
[20:00] Speaker 3: I'm glad you came alone, Johnny.
[20:01] Speaker 2: I'm getting awful tired of having all those cops around here.
[20:05] Speaker 2: All right, listen, Gloria, you are.
[20:07] Speaker 3: Going to get that thirty thousand insurance money.
[20:09] Speaker 4: For me her.
[20:10] Speaker 2: Ain't you you know how long it'll take for me
[20:14] Speaker 2: to get the rest of his stuff Here in this state,
[20:17] Speaker 2: a guy.
[20:17] Speaker 6: Dies, it's sometimes a couple of years before they.
[20:23] Speaker 2: That's madam Johnny thirty thousand. Huh what I thought you
[20:28] Speaker 2: didn't know the amount of that insurance?
[20:30] Speaker 4: Well, Johnny, Gloria, the only recent attempts at to hold
[20:33] Speaker 4: up were made between the times the cops had.
[20:36] Speaker 2: A stake out here, right, Yes, that's right, Johnny.
[20:38] Speaker 4: And somebody must have passed the word around when everything
[20:41] Speaker 4: was clear, you think so cheep?
[20:42] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[20:43] Speaker 4: And I also think that the only people who knew
[20:45] Speaker 4: when the police weren't here were you and your husband.
[20:49] Speaker 2: Well, you don't think you'd go around blobbing it, Oh
[20:52] Speaker 2: I don't.
[20:53] Speaker 3: Well then, now wait a minute, Johnny Dollars.
[20:56] Speaker 2: I'll get your back hair of Gloria. Not yet.
[20:58] Speaker 4: But your husband was good enough with a gun to
[21:00] Speaker 4: a thwarted seven robbery attempts in a.
[21:02] Speaker 2: Role, that's right.
[21:03] Speaker 4: So I think he could have prevented his own murder
[21:06] Speaker 4: if he'd had his gun last night. Well, of course
[21:09] Speaker 4: he had it. They found it lying next to his body.
[21:11] Speaker 4: Somebody was glad to see these hold ups these attempts anyway,
[21:14] Speaker 4: because it provided a perfect excuse to kill him. Johnny,
[21:17] Speaker 4: gun under the counter, didn't sure right here under the register? Okay, okay,
[21:25] Speaker 4: I want to put my gun there, Johnny, get behind
[21:30] Speaker 4: the counter a minute, about where he'd stand.
[21:33] Speaker 2: When a customer came in. Sure right about here.
[21:39] Speaker 4: So last night the man came in and he stood
[21:42] Speaker 4: about here. He pulled a toy gun out of his pocket,
[21:47] Speaker 4: the man of the money in the register. What would
[21:51] Speaker 4: your husband have done?
[21:54] Speaker 2: Well, grabbed the gun like this. You're pointing that right
[22:02] Speaker 2: at me.
[22:02] Speaker 4: You know.
[22:06] Speaker 6: You would have done.
[22:07] Speaker 4: But there was no gone there last night because you
[22:10] Speaker 4: had taken it when the bandits left. You were standing
[22:13] Speaker 4: up on the stairs there at the back. You'd come
[22:14] Speaker 4: down from your apartment. Are you talking about the bullet
[22:17] Speaker 4: that killed him went from his right shoulder down to
[22:19] Speaker 4: his heart, down to the lower ribs because you were
[22:22] Speaker 4: up on the stairs when you shot him.
[22:24] Speaker 2: Then you find a couple of shots into the wall,
[22:26] Speaker 2: and you call the bullice you sue.
[22:27] Speaker 7: That enough to the coon.
[22:28] Speaker 2: I tell him, Gloria, you.
[22:30] Speaker 1: Won't, Johnny, because it happened just the way you said.
[22:32] Speaker 1: But you're never gonna tell.
[22:33] Speaker 2: Warrior, Do right, Johnny?
[22:35] Speaker 7: No, do you chucked the bullets up?
[22:40] Speaker 6: You sit me?
[22:42] Speaker 2: You shaite me? That's right, Gloria, Do I see you happy?
[22:49] Speaker 4: So pretty obvious, I guess right from the beginning. But
[22:58] Speaker 4: as I said, getting proved or in this a confession
[23:01] Speaker 4: isn't always so easy anyhow, Expense account TOTA is putting
[23:04] Speaker 4: mile age on the retal car and the trip back
[23:06] Speaker 4: to hybrid. I'll call it two hundred and fifty even. Okay, yes, truly,
[23:11] Speaker 4: Johnny dollars our star will return in just dormant.

[23:55] Speaker 5: care and buy Sinclair Dino Gasoline Welcome back.
[24:02] Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I should note that circulating copies
[24:06] Speaker 1: of this program do have an end credit sequence. The
[24:10] Speaker 1: problem is it's the wrong one. It is actually from
[24:15] Speaker 1: the tip off matter, the very last episode of Johnny
[24:19] Speaker 1: Dollar that aired on September thirtieth, nineteen sixty two. The
[24:25] Speaker 1: actual cast, and this comes from John Abbott's book that
[24:30] Speaker 1: Who Is Johnny Dollar Matter? Volume two, where he actually
[24:34] Speaker 1: took a look at the scripts gives us our cast of.
[24:38] Speaker 1: In addition to Bob Bailey as Johnny Dollar, we got
[24:42] Speaker 1: Lorne Stopkin, Virginia Gregg Bartlett, Robinson, Paul dubalv and of
[24:47] Speaker 1: course the voice any old time radio fan will recognize
[24:51] Speaker 1: Frank Nelson. I do hope Johnny's meeting with Jack Johnstone
[24:57] Speaker 1: a little bit meta here. I hope that went well,
[25:00] Speaker 1: a pretty fair case. Nothing amazing, but very little that
[25:07] Speaker 1: was beyond the pale in terms of genre on the
[25:11] Speaker 1: way the program went. I do find it odd. You know,
[25:15] Speaker 1: from any standpoint that if you are the young gold
[25:22] Speaker 1: digging wife of a man you murdered, that you would
[25:27] Speaker 1: make the point of not being broken up about his death. Now,
[25:33] Speaker 1: if you're innocent and you feel that way, I can
[25:37] Speaker 1: see it from a couple perspectives. One is just not
[25:41] Speaker 1: being hypocritical and not trying to put on an act.
[25:46] Speaker 1: From a standpoint of being suspected. It's better to admit
[25:52] Speaker 1: that you really didn't care that much for your husband
[25:56] Speaker 1: than to go into historyonics about it and then them
[26:00] Speaker 1: to find evidence of the fact that you really didn't care.
[26:05] Speaker 1: Although on Jonny Dowler they seem to go into some
[26:08] Speaker 1: detail which really isn't necessary. But in the case where
[26:13] Speaker 1: you have murdered him, what's the point. Is it some
[26:19] Speaker 1: sort of weird moral high ground, like, yes, I'm a murderer,
[26:22] Speaker 1: but no, I'm not a hypocrite. In terms of the solution,
[26:26] Speaker 1: the confession was not really necessary other than for dramatic purposes,
[26:31] Speaker 1: because when it came down to it, the angle of
[26:36] Speaker 1: the bullet established guilt, particularly after they caught the rabber
[26:41] Speaker 1: and ran the paraffin test. All right, well, listener comments
[26:45] Speaker 1: and feedback, and we start with a comment on the
[26:50] Speaker 1: Fairweather Friend matter from Spotify. Let's random Spotify user rights.
[26:57] Speaker 1: I have a feeling nineteen fifties alien talk as much
[27:02] Speaker 1: about germs as nineteen fifties military families talking about auto accident,
[27:08] Speaker 1: and those, of course are references to commercials aliens. I
[27:12] Speaker 1: didn't take it that way, but I actually think it's
[27:18] Speaker 1: open to a question because on one hand, I believe
[27:23] Speaker 1: military families could talk a little bit about traffic safety
[27:30] Speaker 1: and their concerns with it. I just can't believe they
[27:34] Speaker 1: talk as much as the Bellweathers do. And as for
[27:37] Speaker 1: aliens from outer space and I work, for some insane
[27:44] Speaker 1: reason on the mission, I would probably talk a lot
[27:48] Speaker 1: about germs and their risk because I know the history
[27:54] Speaker 1: of encounters with new civilizations on our planet where the
[28:01] Speaker 1: introduction of new bacteria and illnesses lead to serious deaths. So,
[28:09] Speaker 1: by all means, let's talk about germs. Although I always
[28:13] Speaker 1: interpreted those ads as germs talking to each other, in
[28:19] Speaker 1: which case, you know, it's a clear win for germs
[28:22] Speaker 1: talking to germs, because what else are germs going to
[28:25] Speaker 1: talk about? Well, now it's time to thank our Patreon
[28:28] Speaker 1: supporter of the day. Thank you so much to Adrian,

[29:20] Speaker 8: con Man Swindler three to five years stretching the Harris

[29:26] Speaker 4: Alone wolf in operation pretty complete. Yeah, Now what's the pitch?
[29:34] Speaker 4: Five to ten million dollars a year net, big pitch?
[29:38] Speaker 4: You're interested. I've got a catcher's midst that throw, and
[29:42] Speaker 4: it's a refinement of the protection like it protection.
[29:46] Speaker 8: See, I got out of that in a thirty.
[29:47] Speaker 4: That's too risky.
[29:49] Speaker 8: The cops and the good citizens get mad fast.
[29:52] Speaker 2: This isn't risky.
[29:54] Speaker 4: I don't like to take chances. That's why I met
[29:56] Speaker 4: you out here on the beach. You can't wire the
[29:58] Speaker 4: air and the sea.
[30:00] Speaker 8: Huge, What do you want from me? I'm not forgetting.
[30:04] Speaker 8: You got a rep as a lone wolf.
[30:06] Speaker 4: And I keep it except that now I need your organizations.
[30:11] Speaker 4: Why you've got men in most of the big cities
[30:13] Speaker 4: in the country, I do. That's right.
[30:15] Speaker 8: Takes a big outfit to run a gambling operation, and
[30:17] Speaker 8: they're tough enough to run any protection racket ever invented.
[30:20] Speaker 4: There will be no violence at all attached to this.
[30:23] Speaker 4: I don't like force. You can make more with brains.
[30:26] Speaker 4: What do the boys do?
[30:27] Speaker 2: Then?
[30:29] Speaker 4: Wreck about twenty million dollar corporation?
[30:32] Speaker 2: One million for that?
[30:34] Speaker 4: You need an army. Not if you do it with
[30:38] Speaker 4: words instead of violence, you're still interested. I always like
[30:42] Speaker 4: to hear a guy talk in millions. What's the name
[30:46] Speaker 4: of this outfit we're gonna wreck?
