[0:36] Speaker 4: We're going to speak to his mentors, his friends and
[0:39] Speaker 4: those who know all the secrets.
[0:41] Speaker 5: But before we do, let's see how we got here.
[0:46] Speaker 2: Hello everyone, it's your favorite lefty crime fighting here.
[0:49] Speaker 3: Thank you very much for watching. Great panel with us
[0:51] Speaker 3: this evening. They're going to talk for an hour on
[0:52] Speaker 3: the TV. No press gallery, no bs. Look, I'll level
[0:55] Speaker 3: with you. I have no idea what's going to be
[0:57] Speaker 3: happening on the news this week. Chances of that are none.
[1:00] Speaker 6: Buckley's and Bugger.
[1:01] Speaker 3: Paul Murray Love to make you, sir.
[1:03] Speaker 4: The story of our Paul Murray is very much one
[1:06] Speaker 4: of a boyhood dream coming true.
[1:09] Speaker 5: From a very young age.
[1:11] Speaker 4: Paul worked out that he had the gift of the gap.
[1:14] Speaker 4: He could recall an absolute abundance of information and verbalize
[1:19] Speaker 4: it pretty much instantly.
[1:21] Speaker 5: He'd later come to call it his one superpower.
[1:24] Speaker 3: I genuinely want to know what you think.
[1:26] Speaker 4: It was a TV show of his own that he wanted,
[1:29] Speaker 4: by hook or by crook.
[1:31] Speaker 5: He was adamant he'd get there.
[1:34] Speaker 4: Radio gave him his start, featuring on a string of
[1:37] Speaker 4: shows a reporter at two GB and two SM, later
[1:42] Speaker 4: hosting at Nova, Triple M and two UE.
[1:46] Speaker 3: I'm Paul Murray in that place right here.
[1:50] Speaker 4: But it was in two thousand and eight that Sky
[1:52] Speaker 4: News viewers caught their first glimpse of Paul Leye. The
[1:56] Speaker 4: precursor to PML was one eighty Paul Murray.
[2:02] Speaker 3: This is one eighty live across the country here on
[2:04] Speaker 3: Sky News. I'm Paul Murray.
[2:05] Speaker 4: Show after show, yarn after yarn. This all grew into
[2:09] Speaker 4: the PML we know and love today, with the show
[2:13] Speaker 4: kicking off five nights a week in twenty ten.
[2:17] Speaker 3: This is the brand new home of Paul Murray Live.
[2:20] Speaker 3: Come on into the man cave. What's to get to tonight?
[2:23] Speaker 4: The show has become the very heart and soul of
[2:27] Speaker 4: this network.
[2:27] Speaker 5: It is emblematic of who we are and what we're
[2:31] Speaker 5: all about.
[2:31] Speaker 3: I've got one hundred thousand dollars for you from Sky News.
[2:34] Speaker 4: Every night Paul has laughed, fired up, and rallied together
[2:39] Speaker 4: hand in hand with his audience.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Mir Juror needs an incubator. Let's go all week, Let's
[2:44] Speaker 3: go hard.
[2:44] Speaker 4: Thank you Paul and your team, because that money wouldn't
[2:47] Speaker 4: have been here for us if it wasn't for you.
[2:50] Speaker 4: Through the inevitable ups and downs of a decade and
[2:53] Speaker 4: a half, we've all been inspired by a bloke who's
[2:57] Speaker 4: earned our loyalty, our respect, and a permanent residency on
[3:02] Speaker 4: our tellies.
[3:03] Speaker 3: At nine pms, let's talk about what's going on.
[3:06] Speaker 4: So tonight we celebrate fifteen years of Paul Murray Live.
[3:11] Speaker 4: We tip our hats to a show much loved, a
[3:15] Speaker 4: career much revered, and a man who brings so much
[3:19] Speaker 4: light to the lives of so many. Happy fifteen years, Paulie,
[3:24] Speaker 4: We love you.
[3:29] Speaker 5: Hello everyone, Welcome to the main cave.
[3:31] Speaker 4: I am Laura Jays and tonight I am a friend
[3:35] Speaker 4: of the one and only Paul Murray and happy to
[3:37] Speaker 4: be here and look tears already. Lovely congratulations looking back
[3:42] Speaker 4: at all that. I didn't think we get tears this early,
[3:44] Speaker 4: by the way.
[3:44] Speaker 3: I know, but this is what happens. I've become that dad.
[3:48] Speaker 3: It doesn't matter like anything. That's an old photo. Thank you.
[3:51] Speaker 3: That's very nice to you.
[3:52] Speaker 5: Well, it's the whole team that put it all together.
[3:55] Speaker 5: But look, I've got to ask, you're surprised that we
[3:58] Speaker 5: made it. That you made it years.
[4:00] Speaker 7: Yes, in the first shows like that just looks like
[4:04] Speaker 7: a look it was a good idea. Yeah, absolutely, like you,
[4:10] Speaker 7: I mean those early days, you remember the very first
[4:13] Speaker 7: time opened my mouth. You know where the man cave
[4:16] Speaker 7: sits now used to of course not be a man cave.
[4:18] Speaker 7: And I used to do daily editorials and it was
[4:21] Speaker 7: mostly the sort of straight up news thing, and you know,
[4:25] Speaker 7: it felt a bit experimental, and then it once the show,
[4:28] Speaker 7: it sort of felt a bit off Broadway, and then
[4:31] Speaker 7: once it sort of became Broadway, you went, okay, cool,
[4:34] Speaker 7: like maybe this is going to be one of those
[4:36] Speaker 7: things that will come and go depending on who the
[4:38] Speaker 7: prime Minister is or yeah totally and then yeah, like
[4:42] Speaker 7: a joy to look back and see me expand into
[4:44] Speaker 7: sixteen by nine.
[4:45] Speaker 5: And I wasn't going to say.
[4:47] Speaker 4: That, but I was going to say, there's a little
[4:50] Speaker 4: bit more gray in the beard over these and I
[4:51] Speaker 4: remember the days that you had a little bit of
[4:53] Speaker 4: just a little dot here, and you just had this
[4:55] Speaker 4: little MISCAA one.
[4:56] Speaker 5: I just wanted to get the secrets out there early.
[4:59] Speaker 5: That is one of them.
[5:00] Speaker 3: Now it looks like I've been sculling liquid paper. And
[5:04] Speaker 3: there was there was a time when sort of I
[5:06] Speaker 3: don't know, for about a year, I thought, I know,
[5:08] Speaker 3: we'll paint it.
[5:08] Speaker 5: You let it go, Yeah, let it go. I'm glad
[5:11] Speaker 5: you did.
[5:12] Speaker 4: What does politics, this show, this platform mean to you?
[5:17] Speaker 5: Because we look.
[5:18] Speaker 4: Back on those photos and it strikes me once again
[5:21] Speaker 4: that you know, you're that nerdy guy at school, you
[5:23] Speaker 4: carried a briefcase, you you know, set up your own
[5:26] Speaker 4: TV studio at home. You wanted to do all the
[5:30] Speaker 4: things early. And I think many people ever know ire
[5:34] Speaker 4: so sure that is what they're meant to do.
[5:37] Speaker 3: Well, firstly to my wife and my mother, who clearly
[5:40] Speaker 3: provided a few photos. Thank you get them later I will.
[5:46] Speaker 3: I think the best way of always explaining it to
[5:49] Speaker 3: people LJ is to say, there are kids who dream
[5:53] Speaker 3: of playing cricket for Australia, right, And it's just logical
[5:56] Speaker 3: that when you're little and you're practicing and you're knocking around,
[5:59] Speaker 3: and then eventually you get to do it and then
[6:02] Speaker 3: be good at it as a teenager, and then and
[6:03] Speaker 3: then and then, right. I just always I grew up
[6:07] Speaker 3: listening to talk back radio, so I wanted to be
[6:10] Speaker 3: one of those guys as they were. There wasn't a
[6:15] Speaker 3: lot of opinion on Telly, but there was American stuff
[6:17] Speaker 3: onto it. So I just I always wanted to and
[6:21] Speaker 3: I was very arrogant about it. Was I was going
[6:22] Speaker 3: to be a broadcaster, not a host, you know, all
[6:25] Speaker 3: of that stuff. I was obsessed with politics as a kid.
[6:29] Speaker 3: I remember being super little when you know, my grandfather
[6:33] Speaker 3: and I won Thursday Night. I watching those politicians for
[6:37] Speaker 3: the first time. Most of those cameras had been there
[6:39] Speaker 3: watching sort of the spill against talk and all that,
[6:42] Speaker 3: so you're sort of watching them come and go and
[6:44] Speaker 3: up and down, and you so.
[6:45] Speaker 5: Were your parents into politics? Was it the drama? Of it.
[6:49] Speaker 5: What was it?
[6:50] Speaker 3: I think no, not quite No. Never. The power is that,
[6:54] Speaker 3: I think again talkback radio and being a child of
[6:57] Speaker 3: talkback radio means that sort of there is a bit
[7:00] Speaker 3: of a good guy's bad guys way of coming into it.
[7:04] Speaker 3: And I'll be honest, I'm listening to you know, to
[7:07] Speaker 3: you were in Sydney and stan Zamarik and it was
[7:08] Speaker 3: pretty obvious the good guys were Team Blue and the
[7:11] Speaker 3: bad guys and then you know, were the labor party.
[7:15] Speaker 3: But yeah, you just should have start to learn. And
[7:17] Speaker 3: then you know, there's always that little part of the
[7:20] Speaker 3: nerd who I don't know, can kind of talk at
[7:23] Speaker 3: the adults table and then you feel more grown up
[7:25] Speaker 3: and then you blink and.
[7:27] Speaker 4: So did you always want to talk to adults more
[7:29] Speaker 4: than you did kids?
[7:30] Speaker 5: Were your bullies? You know? Were you the nerdy guy?
[7:33] Speaker 5: Were you're quiet? Were you're the class clown? What's the
[7:36] Speaker 5: story here?
[7:36] Speaker 8: Well?
[7:36] Speaker 3: I think, I mean, I don't know. I think these
[7:39] Speaker 3: days they'll I mean, I'm always open with everyone. Is
[7:42] Speaker 3: that you know before you got to wear a little
[7:46] Speaker 3: gold star for it, Like I High functioning dyslexic ADHD,
[7:53] Speaker 3: probably ADHD plus, but we never quite got there. That
[7:57] Speaker 3: meant that you're a lot, so you would retreat into
[8:00] Speaker 3: yourself and sometimes that bigger world was another world than
[8:07] Speaker 3: being the one kicking a footy.
[8:09] Speaker 5: So you thought you were a lot, but as a
[8:10] Speaker 5: broadcaster you are enough.
[8:13] Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, good, look well said. So you sort of
[8:16] Speaker 3: start to put together these little and a big way
[8:20] Speaker 3: into understanding the early days of why do I want
[8:23] Speaker 3: to do that was that those people on the radio
[8:25] Speaker 3: were confident, Those people on the radio were happy. Those
[8:28] Speaker 3: people on the radio you know, presumably you know, wealthy,
[8:32] Speaker 3: but not again powerful, just just big people, big personalities.
[8:36] Speaker 3: As sort of a little person who sort of had
[8:40] Speaker 3: this energy in him to sometimes be quite big. That
[8:43] Speaker 3: seemed like the place you want to go. And then
[8:46] Speaker 3: you slowly realize that some of that big personality is
[8:50] Speaker 3: an act and some of that big personality is sort
[8:53] Speaker 3: of a split personality. But I think, you know, the
[8:58] Speaker 3: thing about doing it here was my dreams and focus
[9:00] Speaker 3: was all about radio. So when I got the chance
[9:02] Speaker 3: to do Telly, it was the cream on the top,
[9:05] Speaker 3: which mean I could experiment. I didn't know what sacred
[9:08] Speaker 3: rules I was breaking, and who knew that surprise surprise,
[9:11] Speaker 3: the one you don't ever think is the one you
[9:12] Speaker 3: end up being good at.
[9:13] Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
[9:14] Speaker 4: Let's talk about confidence for a moment, because I have
[9:16] Speaker 4: people come up to me all the.
[9:18] Speaker 5: Time, like your friends with Paul Murray, Are you just yes?
[9:21] Speaker 5: Because azy ill showman on? Does he actually believe this
[9:23] Speaker 5: stuff he says?
[9:24] Speaker 3: Or do you say?
[9:25] Speaker 4: I said, absolutely he does, and a bit of showman
[9:28] Speaker 4: on top, because you know, this is entertainment. If it's
[9:32] Speaker 4: not entertaining, and if you don't fire people up, what's
[9:35] Speaker 4: the point. But I know you, Paul.
[9:38] Speaker 5: I've been here nineteen years.
[9:40] Speaker 3: You know you're when do I get to host you
[9:41] Speaker 3: on one of the fifteen years?
[9:44] Speaker 5: I haven't had the succession that you have had. But look.
[9:53] Speaker 4: What is in those moments? You know, your back people,
[9:56] Speaker 4: your back issues.
[9:58] Speaker 5: We don't always get it right.
[10:01] Speaker 4: What are those moments like when you think didn't get
[10:04] Speaker 4: that one right, I picked the wrong guy or I
[10:07] Speaker 4: picked the wrong battle.
[10:08] Speaker 3: Look, I'll be super honest. Is that the last two
[10:14] Speaker 3: elections have been hard because the case against the current
[10:22] Speaker 3: mob was so clear to me, right, and then if
[10:27] Speaker 3: the result goes the other way, You've got to be
[10:31] Speaker 3: an adult and you've got to look back and go
[10:34] Speaker 3: what didn't I see? Why didn't I see it? And
[10:38] Speaker 3: but that said, you know, if I can kind of
[10:42] Speaker 3: answer the question differently, I don't think this is church,
[10:47] Speaker 3: and I don't think this is the man Cave is
[10:51] Speaker 3: a you know, the Pond's institute that has.
[10:54] Speaker 5: All the answers right is sacred.
[10:57] Speaker 3: Though correct, Like it's it's going through this wild and
[11:03] Speaker 3: weird thing five nights a week with people trying to
[11:06] Speaker 3: be as honest as possible, saying, Hey, I'm happy, Hey,
[11:09] Speaker 3: I'm annoyed, Hey, this inspires me, Hey this annoys me. Yes,
[11:12] Speaker 3: a lot of it ends up being through the endless
[11:14] Speaker 3: prism of politics, because you know, for an awful lot
[11:17] Speaker 3: of us, we love talking about politics, and when you
[11:21] Speaker 3: get asked by friends about you know, is it real?
[11:26] Speaker 3: Here's the bill? Everything I say on air one hundred
[11:28] Speaker 3: percent true. The volume sometimes is the showbiz Like obviously
[11:32] Speaker 3: there are times or a couple of days in a
[11:35] Speaker 3: row where you're not as insistent about something. So yeah,
[11:37] Speaker 3: the volume is part of the joy of performing. But
[11:43] Speaker 3: you know, and I being an adult, like, I'm sure
[11:46] Speaker 3: we could go here's something from twenty eleven versus twenty
[11:49] Speaker 3: twenty one. Why did you believe something different when I
[11:51] Speaker 3: grew up.
[11:54] Speaker 5: How I grew up for the facts change.
[11:56] Speaker 3: So do I correct.
[11:58] Speaker 5: I know what it takes.
[11:59] Speaker 4: I've got an inkling I should say, I've got an
[12:01] Speaker 4: inkling into what it takes for you to turn up
[12:03] Speaker 4: here night and after night, turn that volume up, have
[12:07] Speaker 4: those strong opinions and cop the criticism and the praise
[12:11] Speaker 4: as well.
[12:12] Speaker 5: But what does it give to you but also take
[12:15] Speaker 5: away from you?
[12:17] Speaker 3: I'm not fat. This is all just very thin, thick skin. Right,
[12:21] Speaker 3: I've never put on weight. I've just grown thickness in skin,
[12:25] Speaker 3: you know, like when you first start.
[12:27] Speaker 5: That is one of the greatest euphemisms of all time.
[12:30] Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not being boned. I'm just thick skinned. Yeah,
[12:34] Speaker 3: I suppose. Look when I first came in and you
[12:37] Speaker 3: first start giving an opinion on television, there's part of
[12:41] Speaker 3: you that's like, oh, am I able to have that opinion?
[12:45] Speaker 3: Why should anyone listen to me? And then when you
[12:47] Speaker 3: know media watch, et cetera, et cetera, somebody will have
[12:51] Speaker 3: a little crack.
[12:54] Speaker 9: You know.
[12:54] Speaker 3: In the early days, you know those little toys that
[12:57] Speaker 3: I don't know if they still have the toy shops,
[12:59] Speaker 3: but you know, to be able to push the bottom
[13:01] Speaker 3: of them and they take it go with me to well,
[13:07] Speaker 3: I don't know, just a little thing you push at
[13:08] Speaker 3: the bottom and all the anyway the thing would collapse.
[13:12] Speaker 3: And that's sometimes how you'd feel when somebody would have
[13:14] Speaker 3: a crack, right, and then bang next day go back
[13:18] Speaker 3: and then you start to realize in a really very
[13:19] Speaker 3: very very very good mate at the time said to
[13:23] Speaker 3: me that sometimes the criticism matches the intensity they think
[13:33] Speaker 3: it needs to for you to feel it. Right. So
[13:37] Speaker 3: I remember, you know, got some great hate mail over
[13:40] Speaker 3: the years, or I've had some weird stuff written.
[13:43] Speaker 5: Anything come to mine.
[13:44] Speaker 3: I don't want to reward them necessarily, but well, okay,
[13:50] Speaker 3: ye know, I we'll go there, right. I'm glad your
[13:53] Speaker 3: kid's dead so you can't pass on your politics to them.
[13:56] Speaker 5: I remember that we discussed that a lot at the time.
[13:58] Speaker 3: It's like, just.
[14:01] Speaker 4: But how do you deal with that? Because I think
[14:02] Speaker 4: everyone that is just so personal.
[14:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, ironically, it doesn't devastate you because it's frankly so
[14:10] Speaker 3: outrage so it's too much. But if somebody turns around
[14:16] Speaker 3: and says, I don't reckon you actually read all of
[14:19] Speaker 3: that and you didn't because you know the inboxes is
[14:24] Speaker 3: big or that's the one that.
[14:26] Speaker 5: He's always when there's a scaric of truth to it, right, Yeah,
[14:29] Speaker 5: it gets you.
[14:29] Speaker 3: I hit hard, so I can't be a massive siok
[14:31] Speaker 3: when someone hits back.
[14:33] Speaker 5: All right, that's your cue.
[14:34] Speaker 4: Send your tribute to you, and I don't care how
[14:35] Speaker 4: you do it. Probably email pair straight to the inbox.
[14:38] Speaker 4: I don't know plenty more where that first bit came from,
[14:41] Speaker 4: que the tears, que the tape.
[14:44] Speaker 10: Well, Paul Murray, fifteen years on air, what.
[14:47] Speaker 6: An extraordinary innings.
[14:49] Speaker 11: I've got to say I've enjoyed sharing the journey with.
[14:52] Speaker 5: You through all that time. You've informed us, you've entertained us.
[14:56] Speaker 12: But more than that, you've been so kind and gen
[15:00] Speaker 12: You have the biggest heart.
[15:02] Speaker 6: Unbelievable. Your work epic. I can't understand how you're doing.
[15:07] Speaker 13: You are the most natural broadcast that we have. I
[15:11] Speaker 13: mean there I was when I first came here, you know,
[15:14] Speaker 13: running every single word, freaking that the auto cube might
[15:17] Speaker 13: not work and then I'd be left with it, as
[15:19] Speaker 13: we say in Dutch, a mouthful of teeth and not
[15:22] Speaker 13: knowing what to say. You could just toss off polished scripts.
[15:27] Speaker 10: You are a blessing to broadcast television. You are the
[15:32] Speaker 10: anchor tenant almost of the Sky.
[15:35] Speaker 12: I think I always love about you made is how
[15:37] Speaker 12: much you love Australians and you see that with your
[15:39] Speaker 12: passion every single every single night you go to were.
[15:42] Speaker 3: Brosie, It's Kinkyle here over, here's Jackie bro We love
[15:48] Speaker 3: your show.
[15:48] Speaker 14: I thought i'd mark this occasion here in the car
[15:51] Speaker 14: park of the Nightcliff Jetty, because it was in this
[15:53] Speaker 14: spot ten years ago that we made TV history. But
[15:57] Speaker 14: when we set off firecrackers live on here and somehow
[16:01] Speaker 14: lived to tell the tale.
[16:02] Speaker 12: We'll always have the Oval office mate with the great DJT.
[16:06] Speaker 6: And I see that that.
[16:08] Speaker 12: Photo sits proudly in the man cave there and so
[16:11] Speaker 12: should it ever be.
[16:12] Speaker 6: That was a real special moment.
[16:13] Speaker 12: Was great to have you there, and it was great
[16:15] Speaker 12: to tell the President that you were one of the
[16:17] Speaker 12: good guys.
[16:18] Speaker 6: I support you, I love you.
[16:19] Speaker 11: You're the king of Sky News and from us here
[16:23] Speaker 11: the king of Radio.
[16:24] Speaker 6: I'm a what do you, princess?
[16:26] Speaker 3: What you do for Star is more than your show.
[16:29] Speaker 13: I think you have heard a certain warmth.
[16:32] Speaker 10: Oh wow, truly, value have been a great training ground
[16:36] Speaker 10: for me. You were my first hit out when I
[16:39] Speaker 10: came across from politics to TV and taught me all
[16:41] Speaker 10: I know. So enjoy this wonderful milestone. There will be
[16:45] Speaker 10: many more, and I sit down at nine o'clock like
[16:48] Speaker 10: everybody else, with a glass of wine and enjoy what
[16:51] Speaker 10: you have to say.
[16:51] Speaker 11: I love your humor, your enthusiasm, your passion to.
[16:56] Speaker 12: You and your whole family mate. We love you, and
[16:58] Speaker 12: may we keep watching. Happy anniversary.
[17:01] Speaker 6: We love you, bro, Happy anniversary, my friend.
[17:04] Speaker 14: It's literally been a blast.
[17:07] Speaker 4: Get the medics on standby. I don't know whether he's
[17:10] Speaker 4: going to make it. No, the tears like you can't.
[17:12] Speaker 4: You cannot fake that poorly.
[17:14] Speaker 13: You know that.
[17:16] Speaker 3: Thank you?
[17:16] Speaker 5: It's really nice, all true.
[17:18] Speaker 3: Thank you. I love all of them, like every one
[17:21] Speaker 3: of those people like they've got their own story and
[17:23] Speaker 3: their own connection, and I love hanging out with them
[17:27] Speaker 3: all and I love it. Thank you.
[17:29] Speaker 5: All right, take your deck breath. We'll be back in
[17:30] Speaker 5: a moment. Welcome back.
[17:37] Speaker 4: You are watching Paul Murray live. No, do not address
[17:40] Speaker 4: your screen. This is fifteen years so I get to
[17:42] Speaker 4: ask him the questions, he gets to speak more.
[17:45] Speaker 5: Is that how this works, Pauline?
[17:46] Speaker 3: I think that's that's what that was the design, right.
[17:49] Speaker 5: It's the design. Thank you, thank you for doing it
[17:51] Speaker 5: is wonderful, I sai.
[17:52] Speaker 4: At the start of the show, we're going to speak
[17:53] Speaker 4: to your mentors, your friends, all the people that know
[17:55] Speaker 4: where the bodies are buried, all the secrets this is
[17:59] Speaker 4: this is your life.
[18:00] Speaker 11: Well well, well, I can't believe you about fifteen years Laura, congratulations.
[18:09] Speaker 5: I started when I was tenure. Thank you for showing
[18:14] Speaker 5: I love you, always going.
[18:16] Speaker 3: To surprise you, to see you, love you, to see you.
[18:20] Speaker 15: All right, take a seat, like a Seinfeld said, okay
[18:25] Speaker 15: before you.
[18:26] Speaker 5: Two start with the duo, thank you for being here
[18:29] Speaker 5: for all Ray.
[18:30] Speaker 4: I want to know what it's like to be also
[18:32] Speaker 4: you know, mental friends, but also rivals.
[18:36] Speaker 5: What is that like?
[18:37] Speaker 11: Well, it's been fun. We were rivals for a brief
[18:41] Speaker 11: time on radio, but of course he's now found his
[18:45] Speaker 11: right position, as you know, the voice of sanity of
[18:49] Speaker 11: a nighttime on Sky News. But our association gave way
[18:53] Speaker 11: way back when he was on FM radio. And what
[18:56] Speaker 11: people might know about Paul, he's a great mimic and
[19:00] Speaker 11: his first introduction to me was rather unfortunate incident. I
[19:05] Speaker 11: was involved with the Olympic Games where I was recorded
[19:09] Speaker 11: illegally in some very colorful language. And he then did
[19:14] Speaker 11: we learn us say a piss take a piss take
[19:17] Speaker 11: on me and say they said you've got to listen
[19:19] Speaker 11: to this poor Murray stuff. And I got reminded by
[19:21] Speaker 11: the cage rather originally about Hi said, he and John
[19:24] Speaker 11: Stanley still laugh and I said, I haven't laughed at
[19:25] Speaker 11: it for a long time.
[19:26] Speaker 3: It cost me dearly.
[19:27] Speaker 11: But anyway, then I found out about his ability to
[19:30] Speaker 11: impersonate people.
[19:31] Speaker 6: So we used to get him on the continuous.
[19:33] Speaker 11: Call team the Rugby League show I started, and he'd
[19:36] Speaker 11: come on as the love muscle there was. There was
[19:42] Speaker 11: a show hosted on FM radio by a great Blake.
[19:47] Speaker 3: Richard Mercer Mercer Richard Team.
[19:50] Speaker 11: Doing Anyway love songs dedications and people would bring up
[19:56] Speaker 11: and confess their love for a particular man or woman
[19:58] Speaker 11: that may be some them choka were same sex couples.
[20:02] Speaker 3: Will goodness me and.
[20:05] Speaker 6: People pretend to.
[20:06] Speaker 11: Be in jar happened say how much they love their partner,
[20:09] Speaker 11: and he says, and where are you tonight? Well, I'm
[20:11] Speaker 11: in c section at Long Bay and she's ahearseful and
[20:15] Speaker 11: then he play a song. So we got him on
[20:18] Speaker 11: as the love Muscle and he would say, well, Ray, look,
[20:24] Speaker 11: I'm greatly wanted to be with you, but what's your
[20:26] Speaker 11: partner's name? Bill Steve Jack And then you go on
[20:31] Speaker 11: with his die tried for about ten minutes with Bozo
[20:33] Speaker 11: Fulton and Chippy for Engloss, laughing their heads off at
[20:35] Speaker 11: my expense, and so it became irregular. Then when I
[20:38] Speaker 11: started to do talk radio, he would come on as
[20:43] Speaker 11: Bob Carr, but then Premier and he got Bob car
[20:47] Speaker 11: to call a game of football involving Careterbury Bankstown with
[20:51] Speaker 11: hasm El Masrie and have the vicular object in his
[20:55] Speaker 11: hands because Bob, of course.
[20:56] Speaker 3: Knew nothing of it, no idea. You've got it for
[20:59] Speaker 3: the people out there.
[20:59] Speaker 11: You want to do one little love muscle Richard Mercer.
[21:03] Speaker 16: Okay, So Laura, would you say that your love for
[21:07] Speaker 16: Ray at times is distracting In the supermarket? Are the
[21:10] Speaker 16: moments when you are reaching for Chrispy Kreme donut and
[21:14] Speaker 16: it reminds you of Ray?
[21:24] Speaker 5: That is speakally good?
[21:26] Speaker 3: No it is.
[21:27] Speaker 11: And so he do that on a red I mean
[21:29] Speaker 11: it's a weekly feature. No one could believe it was
[21:32] Speaker 11: Paul Murray then of course when he became more sophisticated,
[21:34] Speaker 11: if I can use that word, and got to this
[21:36] Speaker 11: gig where he is a serious commentator and you know,
[21:40] Speaker 11: like I guess, politically pools of the right doing.
[21:45] Speaker 6: What he believes.
[21:46] Speaker 11: And I think one of the great advantages of Paul
[21:47] Speaker 11: Murray without being in your pocket. Please, he started in radio.
[21:53] Speaker 11: He started in radio and he looks down the gun
[21:57] Speaker 11: barrel every night and that's him. That's not an AUTOQ,
[22:01] Speaker 11: that's not him with a pre prepared statement, that's him
[22:04] Speaker 11: ad liming his way through all that TV. Now, there
[22:07] Speaker 11: wouldn't be many people in Australia maybe in the world
[22:11] Speaker 11: who can look down the gun barrel of a camera
[22:14] Speaker 11: without a script.
[22:15] Speaker 5: I still want people to miss that as well.
[22:16] Speaker 4: You don't have anything in AUTOQ when you speak for
[22:19] Speaker 4: sometimes twenty thirty minutes straight.
[22:21] Speaker 3: Yeah. Look, I can't claim can't dance, average dads, lubbish
[22:24] Speaker 3: husband can talk. But see it's something in my brain.
[22:28] Speaker 3: The filing canimate.
[22:31] Speaker 11: When I first started, say in two thousand or before
[22:34] Speaker 11: that ninety two, when I was filling in for Lawsy,
[22:36] Speaker 11: I have a script. And then finally when it evolved
[22:39] Speaker 11: into two thousand and two until I retired last year,
[22:42] Speaker 11: it would be dot points, but dot points in my mind.
[22:45] Speaker 3: Dot points in my mind.
[22:46] Speaker 11: I'd prompt myself through the course of that fifteen or
[22:49] Speaker 11: twenty minutes at the start of my radio program, and
[22:52] Speaker 11: I get amazed when the serviceman from the NRMA and
[22:56] Speaker 11: New South Wales come and fix cars, because I look
[22:58] Speaker 11: and I don't understand it. And then people say to
[23:00] Speaker 11: me how to do that? And I said, well, the
[23:02] Speaker 11: same as the blake from then M does that, or
[23:03] Speaker 11: the electure electrician does that, the plumber does that.
[23:06] Speaker 6: They do it.
[23:07] Speaker 11: And that's what my that's you know what I have brown,
[23:10] Speaker 11: that's how we were wired to do it.
[23:11] Speaker 6: But I mean, I.
[23:15] Speaker 11: Think that Paul's career over the last fifteen years has
[23:19] Speaker 11: just grown and blossomed, and I think he's a very
[23:24] Speaker 11: important component to politics and what happens in this country.
[23:28] Speaker 4: It's really interesting to see the criticism and the praise
[23:31] Speaker 4: for Paul, and I've seen it for a better part
[23:33] Speaker 4: of fifteen years. Sometimes you're snow small that you don't matter,
[23:37] Speaker 4: and the other times you're too loud and have too
[23:40] Speaker 4: much influence.
[23:41] Speaker 5: So I want to ask you pick away, can you.
[23:45] Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't be both things at once right.
[23:48] Speaker 5: Or all things to all people.
[23:49] Speaker 4: But I've seen Paul influence not just the powerful people
[23:55] Speaker 4: for the benefit of the people, but he's changed the
[24:00] Speaker 4: course of history in many policy decisions and the way
[24:06] Speaker 4: arguments are formulated essentially those outcomes.
[24:09] Speaker 11: That's why you've got to be powerful, and that's why
[24:11] Speaker 11: you've got to be careful.
[24:13] Speaker 6: And he's both.
[24:14] Speaker 3: For us, you know, with gibber all day, and you
[24:17] Speaker 3: don't build anything at the end of it, but when
[24:19] Speaker 3: you can help it so.
[24:20] Speaker 5: You give one hundred grand away on.
[24:23] Speaker 3: Outtown, then you've built something right. So for me in
[24:26] Speaker 3: no particular order. Again, when my boy came and went,
[24:33] Speaker 3: it's unbelievable that in the intensive care units where babies
[24:37] Speaker 3: get crooked, there's little plaques on every piece of equipment
[24:41] Speaker 3: it says it's donated by somebody that's the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.
[24:45] Speaker 3: We've had regional hospitals that have got stuff that means
[24:48] Speaker 3: a kid might stay alive or is able to stay
[24:50] Speaker 3: close because of that. The Kids Helpline. When everyone was
[24:55] Speaker 3: bitching and winging about COVID and I was with you,
[24:58] Speaker 3: the reality is that the Kid's Helpline and I've got
[25:02] Speaker 3: to particularly thank you know, Sarah Murdoch, who was so generous.
[25:05] Speaker 3: Kyle was so generous as well. And Ray knows because
[25:09] Speaker 3: of his own journey with his beautiful little granddaughter, that
[25:14] Speaker 3: there are these things that we sometimes when we're talking
[25:18] Speaker 3: about the world and politics, but the reality is that
[25:21] Speaker 3: that little thing that goes deep is the most important
[25:25] Speaker 3: thing in the world. But if you can get one
[25:26] Speaker 3: for someone, how good is that?
[25:28] Speaker 5: Absolutely?
[25:28] Speaker 11: And you struggle through all of that, and my little
[25:33] Speaker 11: granddaughter lols in the fight of a life at the moment,
[25:35] Speaker 11: she's got to think all the od which is her
[25:38] Speaker 11: liver being attacked by the ky mate that's saving her life.
[25:41] Speaker 11: But you never think you're going to be in the position,
[25:45] Speaker 11: as a parent or a grandparent that your little babies
[25:49] Speaker 11: fighting for life. And it's a most helpless feeling. But
[25:56] Speaker 11: we have this unbelievable health system across this country and
[26:00] Speaker 11: we should all be thankful and blessed, and we should
[26:03] Speaker 11: all get behind the sort of organizations beat Humpty Dumpty,
[26:07] Speaker 11: beat Starlight.
[26:08] Speaker 6: But all these.
[26:09] Speaker 11: Magnificent organizations have helped sick children. Because by criky anyway,
[26:14] Speaker 11: we're not here to talk about sad things. We're here
[26:16] Speaker 11: to talk about this young man. I'm very proud to
[26:19] Speaker 11: call him a friend. And he's a champion. He's a
[26:22] Speaker 11: champion for you people out there.
[26:23] Speaker 3: Support him, good man, he's your voice. Absolutely have a
[26:27] Speaker 3: couple of your accurs I've only got two.
[26:29] Speaker 11: Well, I've offered them the children upon my passing. They
[26:36] Speaker 11: make good doorstops.
[26:38] Speaker 5: That's where I h where's the appreciation. We're with your Lola.
[26:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks Darry.
[26:44] Speaker 5: We love your Leo.
[26:46] Speaker 4: Talk about him next, but here a little more thank you?
[26:52] Speaker 3: Watching on Paul Murray, Welcome to the show Cleanup and
[26:58] Speaker 3: political cleanup and Aidy Murray. Here they are. But let's
[27:02] Speaker 3: find out. Is it Harris what Trump? Mister president? How
[27:05] Speaker 3: are you get a Paul Murray? Love it to met you,
[27:08] Speaker 3: sir brother. We're speaking of truth. You have very good references.
[27:10] Speaker 3: I have to tell you that. Thank you saying yeah,
[27:12] Speaker 3: very good references. We look forward to joining you many
[27:15] Speaker 3: hours over the next many days as we celebrate the
[27:18] Speaker 3: phenomenal life of the queenlizabethy II.
[27:20] Speaker 2: Ready all right, No, I'm not having a He's a
[27:28] Speaker 2: dud in twenty seventeen, and it'll be a dud next year.
[27:31] Speaker 2: The year after and the year after the outcome Turnbulls
[27:33] Speaker 2: prime ministership is over.
[27:44] Speaker 3: Prime Minister, thank you so much for the chance to chat.
[27:46] Speaker 3: Thank you, Paul you be he is reading off screen
[27:51] Speaker 3: the bright lights at Las Vegas. God love Rugby Lay.
[27:53] Speaker 3: It's fourteen dollars a week, going to be enough to
[27:55] Speaker 3: pay your bills. We are here at the start of
[28:01] Speaker 3: what is going to be a history making wheat America
[28:04] Speaker 3: will decide which part of it is going to take.
[28:06] Speaker 8: Can the Dallas where.
[28:08] Speaker 3: They can down to that American election?
[28:10] Speaker 6: Fine?
[28:10] Speaker 3: Fine, vote from Washington Trump one, We'll go to Tokyo. Okay,
[28:14] Speaker 3: well we can do all of that by going to
[28:16] Speaker 3: the Greater Western Sydney Airport. Takee. I love it.
[28:25] Speaker 5: What do you call that? Boget in a pool?
[28:27] Speaker 3: Cash up, bogain floating excellently. I love that.
[28:30] Speaker 4: I've got to ask you about Trump because I was
[28:32] Speaker 4: with you at the White House there.
[28:33] Speaker 5: I reckon we waited ten hours.
[28:35] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and there's no food. The people think there's
[28:38] Speaker 3: some cafeteria or you know, like when you go to
[28:39] Speaker 3: Federal Parlam.
[28:40] Speaker 4: I think a dead mouse dropped out of the roof
[28:42] Speaker 4: in the press room that looks all shiny there was one.
[28:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, correct, Yeah, that's why he's putting the ball room. Mate,
[28:47] Speaker 3: I'll be happy if he puts a vending machine. If
[28:49] Speaker 3: he just puts one vending machine. In the order of
[28:52] Speaker 3: the life, that's a big deal. You're talking to the
[28:56] Speaker 3: most powerful men in the free world. I mean, that
[28:58] Speaker 3: is a big deal. Yeah, that's a really big deal,
[29:00] Speaker 3: you know. And as much as that's important, going to
[29:03] Speaker 3: the States and talking to the most important man in
[29:06] Speaker 3: the free world.
[29:07] Speaker 11: I went to Mudgie the course on Football a few
[29:09] Speaker 11: years back, and I went past a pub and there's
[29:12] Speaker 11: a sign at a hall across the road Paul Murray
[29:14] Speaker 11: Live tomorrow night. So I ring him up and said,
[29:17] Speaker 11: you're in town. He said, you know, so I'm to
[29:19] Speaker 11: do the morning show and then I'm calling to football
[29:21] Speaker 11: on the Friday or the Saturday, whatever it was. So
[29:23] Speaker 11: he said, we'll come down to the show. So I
[29:25] Speaker 11: come down to the show. And one of the things,
[29:28] Speaker 11: I mean, the energy that it takes, you know, along
[29:31] Speaker 11: with the crew to go to these regional centers, you know,
[29:35] Speaker 11: fly and fly out or drive in and drive out
[29:37] Speaker 11: as the case would be. In Mudgie, it's a big
[29:40] Speaker 11: deal for that regional center. And I think one of
[29:42] Speaker 11: the most important things you've done is, you know, go
[29:45] Speaker 11: Chris crossed the nation from one place to another, and
[29:48] Speaker 11: it means so much to those people.
[29:50] Speaker 3: I mean the male.
[29:51] Speaker 11: Model from Mudge, the mayor, Kenny Suthcliffe was with me
[29:54] Speaker 11: and it's a long time Mudge resident, and he said,
[29:57] Speaker 11: Paul doesn't realize just how important it is that he's
[30:00] Speaker 11: come to town, to a regional center and the beautiful
[30:03] Speaker 11: town of Mudgie and all the other thing.
[30:05] Speaker 5: I think you do, know though, I think you do
[30:07] Speaker 5: realize how important it is.
[30:08] Speaker 3: Well you do, you do. I mean, in the early
[30:12] Speaker 3: days you're doing the thing, you're just doing the job.
[30:13] Speaker 3: But then you do realize because the more you talk
[30:15] Speaker 3: to Poomball and I can absolutely confirm that no matter
[30:18] Speaker 3: where I am, it'll be a chicken stitze or garlic
[30:21] Speaker 3: bread and a coke. So I could write it. I
[30:23] Speaker 3: could write a cookbook on the bug and guide.
[30:26] Speaker 11: I don't know about the stenzel and the rest, but
[30:29] Speaker 11: he's certainly at large butt like cake.
[30:33] Speaker 5: Gentlemen, this has been great. It's been my pleasure to
[30:36] Speaker 5: have you here. Raye.
[30:37] Speaker 3: Holy love you, Laura, Thank you very much. He goes
[30:40] Speaker 3: see's and rape.
[30:41] Speaker 5: You got plenty one where that came from. Don't go anywhere.
[30:44] Speaker 5: We'll be back in the Man Caves. Welcome back.
[30:52] Speaker 4: I hope you're enjoying this tribute to the great Paul Murray.
[30:56] Speaker 5: Fifteen years. Still surprised we're talking about fifteen years, obviously, but.
[31:00] Speaker 3: I have the counterfeme fifty six year old host.
[31:03] Speaker 4: Obviously very young when you.
[31:05] Speaker 3: Start crazy, and that's I remember people like Nicholas Reese
[31:13] Speaker 3: who were around the Guillard from your master ship stop
[31:17] Speaker 3: So University, University, there was a wobble. Okay, I won't
[31:22] Speaker 3: lie University a little bit of a wabble, right, Like
[31:25] Speaker 3: I could have a whole conversation about intersectionality, but we're
[31:28] Speaker 3: not doing that now. Okay, we grew out of that phase.
[31:31] Speaker 3: I remember boring my mother and Wayne with is a
[31:36] Speaker 3: tree really a tree? Or is that just what we're told?
[31:39] Speaker 5: Oh so after a week, Oh that thought. These people
[31:43] Speaker 5: probably don't know about that.
[31:46] Speaker 8: Hey, Pollie, Congratulations on fifteen amazing years in the chair
[31:51] Speaker 8: in the Man.
[31:51] Speaker 9: Fifteen years of Paul Murray Live. You are the heart
[31:54] Speaker 9: and soul of this television station.
[31:56] Speaker 17: Congratulations on fifteen years of exceptional service.
[31:59] Speaker 3: To our country now is.
[32:00] Speaker 5: So much to admire about you.
[32:02] Speaker 9: I love the way that you love Australia, that you
[32:04] Speaker 9: are a person dedicated to our country, to your family.
[32:08] Speaker 17: You have great values, great morals, and it's reflected every
[32:11] Speaker 17: day in your editorial.
[32:12] Speaker 18: You just have this wealth of knowledge in your head
[32:15] Speaker 18: and this completely unparalleled ability to articulate it.
[32:19] Speaker 17: I just want to say, at a personal level from
[32:20] Speaker 17: Curly and I thank you for being a great friend,
[32:23] Speaker 17: always a great listener, but a source of great advice.
[32:26] Speaker 18: You are such a positive force at Sky You're the
[32:29] Speaker 18: chief morale booster every room you walk into.
[32:32] Speaker 9: Mate, you brought me into Sky News by inviting me
[32:35] Speaker 9: to be part of your Paul Murray Live family, and
[32:37] Speaker 9: I'm still here. And I've even got a way for
[32:40] Speaker 9: thin version, a cardboard cut out version you in my office,
[32:43] Speaker 9: as you know, just to keep an eye on me
[32:46] Speaker 9: every day.
[32:46] Speaker 10: Something people don't know is that you are a fabulous
[32:50] Speaker 10: a dancer.
[32:51] Speaker 4: You cannot take all Maury anywhere without him getting up
[32:54] Speaker 4: and entertaining all around it.
[32:55] Speaker 17: And I wish you every continued success and make go
[32:59] Speaker 17: the Bronx. I'm sure you're a huge follow of the
[33:03] Speaker 17: Broncos now after two great years, I just wanted to
[33:05] Speaker 17: get that in.
[33:05] Speaker 5: You're just one of the best things about Sky. We
[33:08] Speaker 5: love you, Paul.
[33:09] Speaker 8: Here's to another great fifteen years in the man Cave. Polly,
[33:13] Speaker 8: we love you.
[33:15] Speaker 3: Wow.
[33:16] Speaker 5: Wow, You're right.
[33:18] Speaker 4: You are a good dance Also, fancy you was a
[33:20] Speaker 4: bit of a crooner as well, Ken belt out a tune.
[33:23] Speaker 3: Not happening tonight, love you zero chance. That was Peter
[33:27] Speaker 3: Dunne in particular. Thank you, but to everyone all the calling.
[33:30] Speaker 6: Is right, very lovely.
[33:31] Speaker 5: You're a great friend. You are there when needed.
[33:35] Speaker 4: And our next guest knows that more than any of this.
[33:40] Speaker 4: And he has known you longer and knows where the
[33:43] Speaker 4: body's buried on the secret.
[33:46] Speaker 6: Yours is the producer training manual. He asked me yesterday
[33:56] Speaker 6: is having a smoke? He said, what are you doing tomorrow?
[33:59] Speaker 1: And I said, I don't know, not because I'm on
[34:01] Speaker 1: holidays long And he asked me a second time, what
[34:04] Speaker 1: are you doing tomorrow?
[34:05] Speaker 6: And I thought, hang on, he knows something here, so
[34:08] Speaker 6: I didn't. There you go and you okay?
[34:11] Speaker 5: And he's been crying for forty five minutes.
[34:13] Speaker 6: That's not a surprise.
[34:15] Speaker 3: He's drop of a cove Andie, I'll turn into a
[34:17] Speaker 3: massive It's like three in the morning. That's right's.
[34:23] Speaker 11: Turning up.
[34:24] Speaker 5: Now that's a bit of a regular occasion. Right, let's hang on.
[34:27] Speaker 5: But before we get to that, how long have you
[34:29] Speaker 5: two known each other?
[34:31] Speaker 1: It would be I'd say pretty close to twenty years.
[34:35] Speaker 3: It didn't start well, no, no, what happened?
[34:38] Speaker 1: So, Laura, did you do radio? You did radio for
[34:42] Speaker 1: a little while. But it was a very big thing.
[34:45] Speaker 3: Was she was a black thunder head?
[34:47] Speaker 5: Yeah, I gave that cold canica.
[34:49] Speaker 1: But it was a very big thing, and it makes
[34:51] Speaker 1: it really was just an ego thing that you had
[34:53] Speaker 1: to get what is called mikey. You had to get
[34:56] Speaker 1: your microphone. It was very competitive. It is a competitive
[35:00] Speaker 1: This is an era where there were so many radio
[35:03] Speaker 1: stations going to big press conferences. So there was one.
[35:07] Speaker 1: It was an NRL press conference, and I was very brazen.
[35:10] Speaker 1: I didn't care because I was being paid on the
[35:13] Speaker 1: side by someone to get my microL and so I
[35:18] Speaker 1: went and I got to NRL headquarters a little late.
[35:22] Speaker 1: But because hang on my lot, you know, my little
[35:25] Speaker 1: paycheck is dependent on I.
[35:26] Speaker 3: Know that he's trippled them.
[35:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, I just got there a little late, but I
[35:32] Speaker 1: just pushed my way through and put my microphone just
[35:35] Speaker 1: in a position that was rather prominent, maybe in front
[35:39] Speaker 1: of it, skewered because I.
[35:42] Speaker 6: Didn't have any respect for nov news. And I from
[35:45] Speaker 6: the back of the room put that back and I'll
[35:50] Speaker 6: turn around.
[35:50] Speaker 1: And I saw him without a beard, and I thought,
[35:54] Speaker 1: I'm going to be that bloke's mate. I knew at
[35:56] Speaker 1: that moment, this guy's got the nuts to.
[36:00] Speaker 6: To hammer me back.
[36:02] Speaker 3: I thought, I like I like the boy, and very
[36:05] Speaker 3: fast friends and best friends. And this man is this
[36:07] Speaker 3: man is brother. This man is brother. It's he's been
[36:11] Speaker 3: there for all the up, all the down. But also
[36:14] Speaker 3: just you know, when you you know. Thankfully, Sean, my
[36:19] Speaker 3: wife is not into the showbiz of things. She doesn't
[36:21] Speaker 3: care about the ups and downs all the rest of
[36:23] Speaker 3: her right. But to have a friend in both of
[36:25] Speaker 3: you who knows all those little things that are sort
[36:29] Speaker 3: of boring to talk about with other people, but more
[36:32] Speaker 3: importantly just fun. You're both amazing and I feel like
[36:35] Speaker 3: you're in on something.
[36:37] Speaker 4: Tell us about the Vegas and gond Coast holidays. Then Danville,
[36:41] Speaker 4: well I'm joking. Please don't keep it, Please don't.
[36:44] Speaker 1: They're find no, haven't they they've they've sort of they're
[36:47] Speaker 1: beveled off. But you know, if you if you went
[36:52] Speaker 1: to bed before the sun came up, that was a failure.
[36:54] Speaker 3: Massive. Yeah.
[36:57] Speaker 1: I I'll tell you something.
[37:00] Speaker 6: He comes over often once a week after after a show.
[37:03] Speaker 1: Came around with the washing together, and I know something
[37:07] Speaker 1: important is happening when I hear his car pull up
[37:10] Speaker 1: because he's got a loud thing, right, But then I
[37:13] Speaker 1: don't see him.
[37:13] Speaker 6: For fifteen to twenty minutes. That means he's on a
[37:16] Speaker 6: phone call.
[37:16] Speaker 8: Right.
[37:17] Speaker 6: That means he's talking to someone important.
[37:18] Speaker 1: That happens quite often when I know it's really important.
[37:22] Speaker 1: Is if we're sitting there having a smoke and he'll
[37:25] Speaker 1: look at his phone and he'll take it straight.
[37:27] Speaker 6: To my bedroom.
[37:28] Speaker 5: Oh so it doesn't even speak in front of you.
[37:31] Speaker 6: I know that. I know that is the Prime.
[37:33] Speaker 4: Minister, not even Chatham House between the two of you,
[37:38] Speaker 4: brief trust system.
[37:40] Speaker 1: But honestly, if there was an era where I knew
[37:44] Speaker 1: if he looked and went to my bedroom, it was
[37:46] Speaker 1: the Prime Minister, not the current Prime minister, but it
[37:51] Speaker 1: was previous prime ministers that would ring him and they
[37:53] Speaker 1: would ask for his advice. That was the amazing thing,
[37:55] Speaker 1: Laura was they would actually ask for his advice on
[37:59] Speaker 1: pr how to handle something.
[38:02] Speaker 6: That's how much.
[38:03] Speaker 1: People trust and respect him, is that they seek his counsel.
[38:08] Speaker 3: It's weird, but it's lovely and they.
[38:10] Speaker 1: Do take his advice and not they're not just just
[38:15] Speaker 1: patting him on on their head. They really do want
[38:18] Speaker 1: his perspective on how it's going to play out in
[38:21] Speaker 1: the media, how it's going to play out politically.
[38:23] Speaker 6: And there's a lot of.
[38:24] Speaker 1: People on one particular side of politics that seek out
[38:28] Speaker 1: Paul's counsel labor.
[38:31] Speaker 4: Obviously, Yeah, yeah.
[38:33] Speaker 3: Yeah, agrees. You know I helped that and band all
[38:36] Speaker 3: the way out.
[38:37] Speaker 5: Of course you did, Dad.
[38:38] Speaker 4: What do you see that the rest of us don't
[38:41] Speaker 4: because you see the blood, sweat and tears.
[38:44] Speaker 5: Of course, you see.
[38:46] Speaker 4: Sometimes the angst, the anxiety, the pressure that.
[38:50] Speaker 5: He's under, and then he turns up in night after night.
[38:54] Speaker 5: What does it take?
[38:55] Speaker 8: It?
[38:56] Speaker 6: Does it takes?
[38:58] Speaker 1: Appreciate to do what he does every night, every night
[39:01] Speaker 1: every I couldn't do it, not many people can. And
[39:05] Speaker 1: he rides every show like.
[39:08] Speaker 6: It's the Grand Final. He really does. I mean, we
[39:11] Speaker 6: all have jobs where it's you know, you feel like
[39:14] Speaker 6: it's important, but it's.
[39:16] Speaker 1: Almost impossible to sort of treat every game, every every
[39:21] Speaker 1: show the same.
[39:21] Speaker 6: He does.
[39:22] Speaker 1: He will he if he has a bad show, he's down,
[39:27] Speaker 1: because that's how that's how highly he takes it.
[39:31] Speaker 6: That's that's how important it is to him.
[39:33] Speaker 1: It's but in saying that, he's very good at compartmentalizing.
[39:36] Speaker 6: It's not more important than his family. It's not more
[39:40] Speaker 6: important than the people he loves.
[39:42] Speaker 1: And that also is a rarity in our business that people,
[39:46] Speaker 1: if they are going to be disinvested in what we do,
[39:50] Speaker 1: that the price they usually pay is that the family suffers.
[39:55] Speaker 1: But I don't know kids that love their dads love.
[40:00] Speaker 6: I love him.
[40:01] Speaker 3: It's very nice. Thank you.
[40:02] Speaker 5: What do people often ask you about Paul?
[40:06] Speaker 6: Does he really believe the things?
[40:07] Speaker 3: Everyone asks? Why do they all?
[40:10] Speaker 1: I used to say so I used to work here
[40:13] Speaker 1: in the building at Fox Sports News because we used
[40:16] Speaker 1: to share the same news with Sky, and I would
[40:18] Speaker 1: just say them for a laugh, they doesn't believe it,
[40:21] Speaker 1: just it just doesn't all For showbies, that really confused
[40:24] Speaker 1: them because then they'd watch at nine o'clock.
[40:26] Speaker 6: I could see them sitting around.
[40:28] Speaker 1: The monitor just out the back, and it just blew
[40:34] Speaker 1: their mind thinking how can someone be this passionate on
[40:36] Speaker 1: TV and but that they actually they're on the other
[40:40] Speaker 1: side of politics.
[40:41] Speaker 3: But that was that was no last there that it
[40:43] Speaker 3: is real. Yes, just the volume is the showbiz. The
[40:46] Speaker 3: opinions are real. But I mean also, you know a
[40:48] Speaker 3: Dan scene again. One of the great things about our
[40:51] Speaker 3: friendship is that we were, you know again, two kids
[40:55] Speaker 3: nerds who wanted to do this right, dreamt of doing it,
[40:59] Speaker 3: were able to do it, which means, you know, we're
[41:01] Speaker 3: massive fans of stand up comedy and all of the
[41:05] Speaker 3: intricacies in the art of stand up comedy. And we'll
[41:07] Speaker 3: just have like super in conversations like sort of two
[41:12] Speaker 3: blokes in tinking with cars, You blokes talking about tinkering
[41:16] Speaker 3: with tasks. We're talking about that about a TV show
[41:18] Speaker 3: about sports, television, about life, I mean holding each other's
[41:25] Speaker 3: holding each other up, but also just pumping each other's tires.
[41:29] Speaker 1: I don't have a manager, right, but I won't make
[41:31] Speaker 1: I've got one now actually sort of a consideration for something.
[41:34] Speaker 1: I wouldn't dream of making a decision on something without
[41:37] Speaker 1: going to Paul.
[41:38] Speaker 6: Further, No major decision I've.
[41:40] Speaker 1: Made, I haven't done without him in the last fifteen
[41:43] Speaker 1: twenty years and things have gone all right, So he
[41:45] Speaker 1: must have a pretty good pretty.
[41:48] Speaker 6: Good Did I just give myself an accident or right there?
[41:50] Speaker 6: I didn't?
[41:50] Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no no.
[41:51] Speaker 1: About every decision he has guided me through has been
[41:56] Speaker 1: the correct one. Where children are radio so stas manic
[42:00] Speaker 1: and too you wire and that era. But he did
[42:02] Speaker 1: a show that no one watched on a channel called seven.
[42:07] Speaker 5: H D.
[42:09] Speaker 3: Seven Channel seven.
[42:11] Speaker 1: So this is when Fruit channel started. A branch off started,
[42:17] Speaker 1: and they started to put things on their second channel,
[42:21] Speaker 1: the second but it was very experimental. So they had
[42:23] Speaker 1: a late night show, the Nightcap, the Nightcap with You show,
[42:29] Speaker 1: the panel show, and the way he I only knew
[42:33] Speaker 1: him from radio, but the way he sort of dominated
[42:36] Speaker 1: the camera his stage presence, you look like you didn't.
[42:40] Speaker 6: Care, which was is a wonderful quality.
[42:43] Speaker 1: It's the perfect quality on TV to care deeply but
[42:47] Speaker 1: then be so casual. I knew he was going to
[42:51] Speaker 1: be a TV star, and Sky came calling not long after.
[42:54] Speaker 3: I remember literally as soon as that that's how I'm here,
[42:57] Speaker 3: actually was that as soon as that finished up and
[42:59] Speaker 3: unapt that was pretty quickly. Angelo the boss of the
[43:03] Speaker 3: time said hey, come have a play, and it turned
[43:07] Speaker 3: into the daily editorial that turned into the Friday night show,
[43:11] Speaker 3: that turned into the nightly show that became the two
[43:13] Speaker 3: hour show. And you know we're now yeah, where we.
[43:20] Speaker 4: Are Now here's two little girls that have turned out
[43:23] Speaker 4: all right as well.
[43:24] Speaker 18: We don't enactualation sad for fifteen years of hard work
[43:28] Speaker 18: at Paul Murray Life.
[43:29] Speaker 6: We're so proud of you and we love you.
[43:31] Speaker 18: Congratulations for your hard work touch of fifteen years.
[43:35] Speaker 3: We love you. Wow, I love your girls, So proud
[43:43] Speaker 3: of you, Thank you, thank you. They I mean, look,
[43:49] Speaker 3: you know, everyone's kids are awesome. Everyone's kids are everything
[43:52] Speaker 3: for me. They are the prism through which when you
[43:57] Speaker 3: fire up about the future or you're concerned about the future,
[44:00] Speaker 3: that's what you think about. They are big, beautiful personalities.
[44:07] Speaker 3: And there's no greater thrill than coming home after a
[44:10] Speaker 3: few days away and Zadi running up and giving me
[44:13] Speaker 3: the pad on the back. And there's no greater thrill
[44:15] Speaker 3: than when Ashra and I are cuddling up after everyone
[44:18] Speaker 3: else has gone to bed.
[44:20] Speaker 1: They both have his rebellious streak, so he's going to
[44:23] Speaker 1: have his hands.
[44:24] Speaker 6: Are the most beautiful girls, he's going to.
[44:26] Speaker 3: Have his hands full ten and eight, imagine sixteen.
[44:28] Speaker 6: Yeah, because they're him.
[44:30] Speaker 3: They're him.
[44:31] Speaker 5: It sounds like you deserve that.
[44:32] Speaker 3: Actually for oh yeah, the trouble I've coursed over the years.
[44:37] Speaker 3: That's that's awesome. I asked Sean directly, were they involved.
[44:40] Speaker 5: In the show, and she said, no, there you go.
[44:45] Speaker 5: You became a father with Leo.
[44:48] Speaker 3: Yes, uh go Yankees Yankees baby.
[44:53] Speaker 4: And I love that you talk about him regularly on
[44:57] Speaker 4: the program and certainly annually.
[45:00] Speaker 5: What would you like people to.
[45:01] Speaker 4: Know about Leo that time in your life and how
[45:05] Speaker 4: you are now.
[45:08] Speaker 3: It's the folk in the road, It's the break moment.
[45:10] Speaker 3: It's when I became a fool human being, when this
[45:19] Speaker 3: great blessing of a little bubba turns into a nightmare
[45:24] Speaker 3: that turns into a blessing of love. I see it
[45:29] Speaker 3: as a really important thing not to talk about the
[45:33] Speaker 3: worst day in my life as a way of somehow
[45:36] Speaker 3: making it about me or sympathy about me. But it's
[45:39] Speaker 3: just about saying that that happened to someone today. Someone
[45:43] Speaker 3: today lost their kid, right, someone today lost their kid,
[45:45] Speaker 3: And when you regularly talk about it, maybe you pop
[45:49] Speaker 3: through somewhere and you pull someone through the darkness. But
[45:52] Speaker 3: the love that I've got as a result is him. Sean.
[45:58] Speaker 3: My beautiful wife said to me when we're in the hospital,
[46:01] Speaker 3: and Dan of course was there, that you know, go
[46:05] Speaker 3: be his father and engage with the world. And that's
[46:08] Speaker 3: why I don't get to celebrate his birthday. I didn't
[46:11] Speaker 3: get to take him to Mount Panorama. I don't get
[46:13] Speaker 3: to teach him about the Police Academy movies. But if
[46:19] Speaker 3: I can talk about him and it helps someone else,
[46:23] Speaker 3: I loved I loved you.
[46:25] Speaker 19: I've never seen people go through pain like that, and
[46:29] Speaker 19: I have. I never see it again, and I think
[46:31] Speaker 19: it's I think he's greatest. One of his great maybe
[46:33] Speaker 19: he's greatest achievement, is that he and Seann came out
[46:36] Speaker 19: the other side.
[46:37] Speaker 6: Because I can see something.
[46:38] Speaker 1: Like that breaking people, and it should have broken them
[46:44] Speaker 1: because I've never seen pain like it. And now they've
[46:48] Speaker 1: come out the other side and two beautiful daughters, and
[46:52] Speaker 1: my respect for Paul went through.
[46:55] Speaker 6: We've been friends for a.
[46:57] Speaker 1: Few years, but boy, you've got to be made a
[47:01] Speaker 1: special stuff to get through.
[47:03] Speaker 6: That, and well you know he is.
[47:07] Speaker 3: Thanks mate, I love you.
[47:09] Speaker 5: You are you Yankees. Quick break here. We do have
[47:14] Speaker 5: a surprise for you on the side. We're going to
[47:15] Speaker 5: bring the mood up.
[47:16] Speaker 3: So a fourth child.
[47:19] Speaker 5: Four child.
[47:21] Speaker 4: You're going to have to explain how that happens, So
[47:24] Speaker 4: we'll do that after the break. Fifteen years is really
[47:34] Speaker 4: hard to squeeze into one.
[47:37] Speaker 5: Hour, but here we are, Paulie.
[47:38] Speaker 3: Thank you.
[47:39] Speaker 5: Not many people get to reflect on their career like this.
[47:42] Speaker 5: How do you feel looking at it? And I reckon,
[47:44] Speaker 5: we're not even a quarter of the way through.
[47:46] Speaker 3: Well, God love you for saying that. Thank you. Yeah,
[47:49] Speaker 3: you just feel I mean, honestly, like I say, it's
[47:51] Speaker 3: so often to you, right, which is about how lucky
[47:54] Speaker 3: I am. I was the boy who dreamt of playing
[47:55] Speaker 3: cricket for Australia and I'm still able to do it, right,
[47:58] Speaker 3: I dreamt of doing this, I'm still able to do it.
[48:01] Speaker 3: And just very simply to my wife, kids, they have
[48:05] Speaker 3: to give up so much. I love you more than ever,
[48:07] Speaker 3: to all the family, all the friends, all the colleagues,
[48:10] Speaker 3: all the people that have been on the show. But
[48:12] Speaker 3: most importantly, the connection that I think we've been able
[48:15] Speaker 3: to develop is the reason why I'm sitting here, and
[48:17] Speaker 3: it's the single most important component in how I put
[48:20] Speaker 3: a show together, And as long as we have it,
[48:23] Speaker 3: I'll be here and I have no plans on doing
[48:25] Speaker 3: anything to undermine that anytime soon. But thank you for
[48:27] Speaker 3: a lovely evening, my dear, No, thank you.
[48:30] Speaker 15: And I just want to say to you, there's nothing
[48:33] Speaker 15: more satisfying than watching someone that loves their job so much.
[48:38] Speaker 15: And it's even kind of weird to call this a
[48:40] Speaker 15: job for you, I know, it's like.
[48:42] Speaker 5: A vocation, it's a calling. So we've got one last surprise?
[48:45] Speaker 3: Is it Albo? Yes, in a cake?
[48:48] Speaker 5: Let's bring them the two prime ministers.
[48:52] Speaker 3: Oh chickens? Hello? Oh well hello? Hello, Hello, Hello, hello, laws, Hello,
[49:04] Speaker 3: Give her a.
[49:04] Speaker 6: Couple, give her.
[49:08] Speaker 5: Hi, Hello. I thanks so much for doing this. Have
[49:11] Speaker 5: you been in the band cave before?
[49:14] Speaker 8: Oh?
[49:14] Speaker 3: Girls, this is awesome, This is awesome. Was it weird
[49:17] Speaker 3: when the TV came? It was in our land room?
[49:23] Speaker 5: So who wants to follow in Dud's footsteps?
[49:25] Speaker 3: Do you think who wants to be?
[49:27] Speaker 6: Well?
[49:27] Speaker 3: They both want to be singers.
[49:28] Speaker 18: No, no, I want to be either an interior designer
[49:32] Speaker 18: or a psychologist fashion.
[49:34] Speaker 3: Designer, psychologist? Your influence for correct and what do you
[49:38] Speaker 3: want to be? Fashion designer? Can we do like a
[49:41] Speaker 3: little bit of singing on the side though, we've been
[49:43] Speaker 3: prepping with our Sabrina Carpenter, haven't we.
[49:46] Speaker 5: What's it like growing up with the dad on Telly?
[49:51] Speaker 5: It's cool, is it? Yeah?
