[3:02] Speaker 3: of the Old West. A dance and gambling hall crowded
[3:05] Speaker 3: with hard riding, fast shooting men, enjoying themselves but at
[3:09] Speaker 3: any moment ready for action. Suddenly, the swinging doors fly,
[3:13] Speaker 3: opening A tall, languid cow polk stands framed in them.
[3:17] Speaker 3: The crowd quiets down as the cowpoke ambles to the
[3:20] Speaker 3: bar and stops in front of a well dressed, shifty
[3:23] Speaker 3: eyed man.
[3:28] Speaker 7: Well, dude, it's sundown and I'm still in town.
[3:33] Speaker 8: You don't take advice, easy, Steve Morgan.
[3:36] Speaker 7: I'm choosy about whose advice I take. Dude, I don't
[3:40] Speaker 7: like yours. I give you five seconds to drow.
[3:43] Speaker 8: Well, look, Steve, you know.
[3:49] Speaker 3: Okay, Okay, that's that cut. Cut, camera will print that take.
[3:54] Speaker 6: All right, boys, pair of the SUTs. We can do
[3:56] Speaker 6: the fight scene next.
[3:58] Speaker 3: Oh Gary, Gary, well how did it go? I'm a
[4:02] Speaker 3: great director?
[4:03] Speaker 9: Okay, well, swell great strong josstuff.
[4:06] Speaker 7: Thanks.
[4:07] Speaker 2: You've got a visitor, Gary, Doctor Hobart Whalen. This is
[4:11] Speaker 2: Gary Marlow Steve Morgan in this picture we're shooting.
[4:14] Speaker 6: Well, how do you do, mister Marlow. It's quite a
[4:17] Speaker 6: thrill meeting you in person after seeing you in so

[4:22] Speaker 6: James Dover.
[4:23] Speaker 7: Hello, mister Dover. Oh sorry, mister Mow. I can shake
[4:28] Speaker 7: hands with my left Get used to it after being
[4:30] Speaker 7: without a writer arm a couple of years. I'm sorry
[4:33] Speaker 7: I didn't notice. Okay, everyone spots the leg, Chris.
[4:37] Speaker 6: Mister Marlow is somewhere we could talk privately.
[4:40] Speaker 7: Why my dressing room? Just follow me.
[4:50] Speaker 6: To get to the point, mister Marlowe, I'm heading the
[4:53] Speaker 6: Institute for Disabled Workers and we're embarking on a large
[4:57] Speaker 6: fundraising campaign.
[4:58] Speaker 7: Well, maybe i'd better save your time. I'm doctor Whalen.
[5:01] Speaker 7: All my charitable contributions are handled by my business man.
[5:04] Speaker 7: We're not looking for charity, mister Marlow. Why is it
[5:07] Speaker 7: every time you guys see somebody without an arm or
[5:09] Speaker 7: a leg, you think of ten cuts and peck boy,
[5:11] Speaker 7: I'm sorry, I thought sure it. I know you thought
[5:13] Speaker 7: we're looking for a handhot charity. Huh did you ever
[5:16] Speaker 7: take any mister Marlow? It sticks in your craw.
[5:18] Speaker 6: Jimmy, you you better wait outside.
[5:24] Speaker 7: I'm sorry, doctor, believe me, mister Dover, I didn't mean Morlow.
[5:29] Speaker 7: I fly off the handle to Lae. Wait outside, Jimmy.
[5:33] Speaker 7: I'll finish our business with mister Marlow. That I'm sorry again.
[5:40] Speaker 7: I'm always being sorry, doctor, I didn't mean to hurt him.
[5:52] Speaker 6: No one does, you see, mister marlow That's what my
[5:56] Speaker 6: institute is for, to educate the public to the disabled
[6:01] Speaker 6: people to accept a man minus an arm and a leg,
[6:05] Speaker 6: like Jimmy for instance, as a man, not a.
[6:08] Speaker 7: Gripment, Doctor whalan any way I can help you, I will.
[6:11] Speaker 6: Thank you, mister Marlow. You can by a contribution, not
[6:14] Speaker 6: of your money, but of your time.
[6:17] Speaker 7: Yes.
[6:17] Speaker 6: Month from now we're holding a benefit in New York City.
[6:20] Speaker 6: It's to raise money to set up a chain of
[6:23] Speaker 6: industrial and liberal arts schools for the disabled so they
[6:27] Speaker 6: can become self employed.
[6:29] Speaker 7: A month from now.
[6:30] Speaker 6: You said yes, and I like you the famous Western
[6:33] Speaker 6: film style to be our master's ceremonies. We'll have a
[6:36] Speaker 6: full program of stars and celebrities.
[6:39] Speaker 7: Well, I think I can do it, doctor Whalen. I'll
[6:41] Speaker 7: have declared it with my agent, my studio, but that
[6:44] Speaker 7: you'd be simple.
[6:45] Speaker 6: Splendid mister Marlowe. Thanks for your cooperation. I'll have my secretary,
[6:49] Speaker 6: Miss Vicky Brandt call you for a final confirmation. Good day, Sir.
[7:02] Speaker 8: David Harding, United States Counter Spires, Washington, from United States
[7:06] Speaker 8: and Screen Actors' Union, pursuant to Tax Bureau memorandum listens
[7:11] Speaker 8: to notify you that members of our union are being
[7:13] Speaker 8: solicited to appear at a benefit performance for the Institute
[7:17] Speaker 8: for the Disabled doctor Hobot Whalen, Director. We are notifying
[7:22] Speaker 8: our members they may appear unless you notify us to
[7:24] Speaker 8: the contrary herting.
[7:33] Speaker 3: With telegram just came in.
[7:34] Speaker 6: Quinn, I see, Peter, Oh yes, what's it all about. Oh,
[7:39] Speaker 6: that's right.
[7:40] Speaker 2: You were out of town on the horn case when
[7:41] Speaker 2: this memorandum issued.
[7:43] Speaker 6: I don't know what it refers to.
[7:45] Speaker 2: Charity benefit performances. The tax Bureau has been having trouble
[7:49] Speaker 2: with them.
[7:49] Speaker 7: Oh oh well.
[7:52] Speaker 2: In some instances, the tax regulations allow entertainers to deduct
[7:55] Speaker 2: contributions of their services to charity, just as if they
[7:58] Speaker 2: had donated. Case, but there were a number of benefits
[8:01] Speaker 2: last year that were nothing but highly organized racket.
[8:04] Speaker 7: Oh I get it.
[8:06] Speaker 9: The tax people wouldn't allow the deductions to.
[8:08] Speaker 2: Play in those benefits. That's right, So we've worked out
[8:10] Speaker 2: an arrangement with them. In the various entertainers union, they
[8:13] Speaker 2: notify us of scheduled benefits, we make a routine investigation
[8:17] Speaker 2: the sponsors the benefits know about it. Not if we
[8:19] Speaker 2: give them a clean bill of health, and if we don't,
[8:22] Speaker 2: no benefit unless they want to promote one for themselves
[8:25] Speaker 2: in the penitentiary.
[8:26] Speaker 9: Fine, or once we get a chance to stop a
[8:28] Speaker 9: crime before it's committed.
[8:29] Speaker 6: It's about it.
[8:31] Speaker 2: So put this institute in this doctor Hobart Whalen through
[8:34] Speaker 2: a routine investigation, then we can forget it, unless, of course,
[8:38] Speaker 2: it turns out to be not routine.
[8:48] Speaker 10: Yes, mister mollow Well, this is doctor Whalen's secretary. I'll
[8:52] Speaker 10: give him your message just as soon as he gets
[8:54] Speaker 10: back here to the office, and.
[8:55] Speaker 11: We'll see you in New York in a month.
[8:58] Speaker 7: Goodbye, the Great Gary Marlow.
[9:02] Speaker 10: Yes, Jimmy, he says, you'll m see the benefit performer.
[9:07] Speaker 11: You're not very enthusiastic.
[9:08] Speaker 7: About it, are you, Jimmy Sorr.
[9:10] Speaker 6: I think you've got the bluesty. I have splendid you.
[9:14] Speaker 6: Who's splended you?
[9:14] Speaker 11: What is it, doctor Whalen?
[9:16] Speaker 6: Well, I've just talked to the management of Colisim Hall
[9:18] Speaker 6: in New York by transcoontinental phone. They're going to let
[9:20] Speaker 6: us have the hall for our benefit, for just expenses.
[9:23] Speaker 6: They're giving up their usual profits.
[9:25] Speaker 11: Wonderful, doctor, isn't it Jimmy.
[9:27] Speaker 6: Yeah, Greed, Well, what's the matter.
[9:30] Speaker 11: Jimmy's a little down in the dumps today.
[9:33] Speaker 7: Oh doctor, it's just that I haven't been doing anything,
[9:37] Speaker 7: just hanging around, acting like a pitch to soften people up.
[9:40] Speaker 7: I walk in, they took a look at me, and
[9:42] Speaker 7: they go woozy and well. I can't stand the pity
[9:45] Speaker 7: in their eyes when they see what the war did
[9:46] Speaker 7: to me.
[9:46] Speaker 6: I know how you feel. By That's why your job
[9:49] Speaker 6: is the toughest of all. Yeah, because you've got to
[9:52] Speaker 6: stand that pity, the misplaced pity of a lot of
[9:54] Speaker 6: well meaning people. You've got to do that so we
[9:57] Speaker 6: can break the ground and educate them to know that
[9:59] Speaker 6: you I don't need pity. We've got to show people
[10:02] Speaker 6: that a boy like you is well able to take
[10:04] Speaker 6: care of himself, show them in a dramatic manner that
[10:07] Speaker 6: they'll never forget. Maybe you're right back, of course. Now,
[10:13] Speaker 6: I just made train reservations to New York. You get
[10:16] Speaker 6: down the station, get those tickets on the double, and
[10:18] Speaker 6: don't tell me that you can't do that with one leg.
[10:22] Speaker 7: I know you better, Okay, doctor Levin. Sorry, I'm gonna tell.
[10:26] Speaker 6: You, Vicky, I think I set the boy straight, no
[10:35] Speaker 6: question about it. Funny thing is every word I said
[10:38] Speaker 6: was true.
[10:39] Speaker 11: And you didn't mean a single one.
[10:41] Speaker 6: The important thing is he thinks I did.
[10:43] Speaker 11: Yeah, he does.
[10:46] Speaker 6: Now, what's the matter with.
[10:47] Speaker 7: You, Vicky?
[10:49] Speaker 11: Him?
[10:49] Speaker 6: Him? You falling for that half man?
[10:53] Speaker 11: No, I'm working this con game with you. That doesn't
[10:56] Speaker 11: mean I have to like it.
[10:58] Speaker 6: But on this sudden I.
[11:00] Speaker 10: Just got a metal picture of Jimmy when he finds
[11:03] Speaker 10: out that you and I are phony.
[11:05] Speaker 6: It was a heartbroken why but tears were streaming down
[11:08] Speaker 6: his face, touching sight.
[11:10] Speaker 11: Doc, what do you use for a heart?
[11:12] Speaker 6: A pump composed of animal tissue like every other human being.
[11:15] Speaker 6: Don't flatter yourself, all right, I'll change that like every
[11:19] Speaker 6: other animal in the jungle. You call civilization, Doc, the
[11:21] Speaker 6: survival of the fittest. The strong eat the weak. I'm strong,
[11:25] Speaker 6: the gay. The kid's a sucker. In fact, he's a cripple.
[11:28] Speaker 6: Doesn't change that, simply makes him better bait to lure
[11:32] Speaker 6: on the healthy suckers.
[11:35] Speaker 11: Okay, Doc, no lectures.
[11:38] Speaker 6: Whatever you say, Vicky, just don't turn into a sucker yourself.
[11:44] Speaker 11: It's a little late for me to change sides.
[11:46] Speaker 6: I guess that's right, So snap out of it, VICKI
[11:50] Speaker 6: two more days we head for New York.
[12:11] Speaker 11: Who is it?
[12:12] Speaker 10: Jimmy sure, Jimmy sure, the door's not locked.
[12:18] Speaker 7: I thought you'd being a club cardrop.
[12:21] Speaker 11: My own club car, right here in my own confinement.
[12:25] Speaker 7: Oh well, I see you. Do you get trained sick?
[12:30] Speaker 7: Is that? Why?
[12:31] Speaker 4: No?
[12:31] Speaker 11: I just like a drink now and then? Nothing wrong
[12:34] Speaker 11: with that, is it?
[12:35] Speaker 6: Of course?
[12:36] Speaker 7: Not if you want me to go?
[12:38] Speaker 11: Why should I want you to go? Sit down? Look
[12:40] Speaker 11: at the scene right it goes by.
[12:44] Speaker 7: I've just been talking to doctor Whaler.
[12:46] Speaker 11: Doctor Whaling that calls for another drink?
[12:50] Speaker 6: You want one, Vicky.
[12:51] Speaker 7: Don't you think you've had enough?
[12:53] Speaker 11: I've had enough or something.
[12:54] Speaker 7: But it's not this, okay? What's your looking at the
[13:01] Speaker 7: country side? Oh makes me kind of ashamed of myself.
[13:06] Speaker 11: You're shamed?
[13:07] Speaker 7: Look at it, Vicky, wide and rolling those sweet fields,
[13:13] Speaker 7: pretty in the sun. I think it's pretty.
[13:18] Speaker 11: The doctor's right, the darkness, Oh yes, doctor.
[13:22] Speaker 7: Wade, Vicky, Vicky, I've decided something. This country is big
[13:28] Speaker 7: enough for everything, everybody. The mountains we went through, the
[13:32] Speaker 7: plains will be rolling over soon. There's a room in
[13:35] Speaker 7: it for every man, even a guy like me. A hat.
[13:40] Speaker 11: Sorry the doctor that huh.
[13:43] Speaker 7: Yeah, But I added something in my own, Vicky. This
[13:47] Speaker 7: country is big, but it needs me. I'm alive. I've
[13:51] Speaker 7: got something to give it, me and a million other
[13:53] Speaker 7: men and women like me. Trouble is it kind of
[13:57] Speaker 7: slow to wake up to the fact. Sort of stupid,
[14:02] Speaker 7: But I'm going to help smartness that you are sure, Vicky,
[14:05] Speaker 7: and you too.
[14:08] Speaker 11: You know something, Jimmy. You know who's stupid?
[14:12] Speaker 6: Vicky?
[14:12] Speaker 7: Who you know?
[14:12] Speaker 11: You're stupid? Stupid, stupid and a sucker.
[14:15] Speaker 6: Oh what a sucker.
[14:17] Speaker 11: You're not a strong one.
[14:18] Speaker 10: You're not like the doc.
[14:19] Speaker 11: You're not like me, strong one.
[14:21] Speaker 6: That's me. What do you say the doc?
[14:24] Speaker 10: The doc you couldn't even give you a prescription to
[14:26] Speaker 10: buy a bandage and.
[14:27] Speaker 7: A drug store to.
[14:31] Speaker 6: Tell you a beautiful story about a rat?
[14:36] Speaker 11: Pretty rat? You think I'm pretty, don't you?
[14:40] Speaker 7: Vicky? Makes sense?
[14:40] Speaker 11: I wish I didn't. I wish I didn't, but I do.
[14:43] Speaker 10: Jimmy, our organization is a phony, and the doc is
[14:45] Speaker 10: a phony, and I'm a phone.
[14:50] Speaker 11: Why do I say it? Down? Off that crutch and
[14:56] Speaker 11: I'll tell you.
[15:07] Speaker 7: Operator I'm in a railroad station. I only have eight minutes.
[15:10] Speaker 7: I don't know the number, but I've got to talk
[15:11] Speaker 7: to Countess by headquarters in Washington, d C. Mister David Hardy, Mister.
[15:20] Speaker 4: Peters, call mister Harding right away. Mister Peters, call mister
[15:24] Speaker 4: Harding right away.
[15:29] Speaker 2: Yes, Peters, has anything come in on the investigation of
[15:32] Speaker 2: that benefit.
[15:32] Speaker 3: For the disabled?
[15:34] Speaker 9: You said it was just routine.
[15:35] Speaker 2: There's not routine anymore. Bring whatever you've got to my office.
[15:38] Speaker 2: We've got to go to work fast.
[15:49] Speaker 3: Back to counterspy and just a moment. But first, Tetsi cola.
[15:54] Speaker 11: Hit the spot and two moxasples.
[15:56] Speaker 2: That's a lot lots more value, a lot more.
[15:58] Speaker 7: Dest I take less?
[15:59] Speaker 6: Where Pepsi's best?
[16:01] Speaker 3: More and more among fellows and girls, among mothers and dads.
[16:03] Speaker 3: You hear that same and sensible question, Why take less
[16:07] Speaker 3: when pepsi is bet no budget, no allowance ever had
[16:10] Speaker 3: a better friend than tangy sparkling pepsicola. Because one big
[16:15] Speaker 3: twelve out pepsi bottle gives you two delicious drinks. That's
[16:18] Speaker 3: twice as much. Tangy take twice as much delicious pepsi
[16:22] Speaker 3: to go just twice as far. That's why more and
[16:25] Speaker 3: more families say, why take let when Pepsi's bet? Yes,
[16:30] Speaker 3: family is like yours than mine. Family's all over America
[16:34] Speaker 3: they're all saying, why take lets when pepsi is bet.
[16:38] Speaker 4: Pepsicola, pepsy spoty, taste terrific when you're hot, more and better.
[16:43] Speaker 3: Than the rest? Why take less when Pepsi's best today tomorrow?
[16:47] Speaker 3: Always get America's biggest cola value. Take home a carton
[16:51] Speaker 3: of six, big big pepsi bottle, Insist on pepsi at
[16:55] Speaker 3: the store, and say pepsi at the fountain, say pepsi,
[17:00] Speaker 3: app a stamp, Say pepsi whenever you reach for a refreshment.
[17:04] Speaker 3: Remember why take less when pepsi? And now back to
[17:10] Speaker 3: Countress by He Brents are in the corridor of a
[17:16] Speaker 3: large New York hotel. Jimmy raises his good arm to
[17:19] Speaker 3: knock on the door of Room Prio two, then parted,
[17:24] Speaker 3: sure you wanted to true with the city.
[17:25] Speaker 6: I'm sure.
[17:29] Speaker 7: Oh yeah, mister.
[17:34] Speaker 6: Hardy, that's right, mister dover come in.
[17:39] Speaker 10: Now.
[17:39] Speaker 7: Uh this is miss Vicky Brent. I told you about it.
[17:43] Speaker 6: Won't you sit down? Miss Brent? Oh?
[17:45] Speaker 11: Yeah, thank you?
[17:48] Speaker 2: Why not in the bag, Miss Brand. You don't look
[17:50] Speaker 2: very comfortable person on the edge of that chair.
[17:52] Speaker 11: I'm a little nervous.
[17:53] Speaker 2: N's all right, this is my assistant, mister Peters, Ms Brent,
[17:57] Speaker 2: mister Dover. V How mister Dover, let's listen to you.
[18:03] Speaker 2: What about this phony benefit?
[18:05] Speaker 7: You called me about it? Well, I told you about
[18:08] Speaker 7: doctor Whalen and my partner it sketchally. Yes.
[18:11] Speaker 2: Well we've already investigated Whale and he has a long
[18:13] Speaker 2: record as a confidence man and a chiseling promoter.
[18:16] Speaker 7: Well, I think, Vicky, I mean Miss Brent can give
[18:19] Speaker 7: you a better picture of the set up than I
[18:20] Speaker 7: can Alms.
[18:21] Speaker 10: Bran First, mister Harding, I want to get one thing straight. Yes,
[18:26] Speaker 10: Jimmy's got a little blind spot about me. This isn't
[18:30] Speaker 10: the first fake deal.
[18:31] Speaker 11: Liveing in the doctor didn't con me into what I
[18:33] Speaker 11: knew what it was all about from the start.
[18:35] Speaker 2: I'm glad you said that, Miss Brand. It's a good beginning.
[18:38] Speaker 2: What we've been looking you up too.
[18:41] Speaker 9: Peter Victoria, Brent and Is Barry and Is Brandon indicted
[18:45] Speaker 9: for racetrack swindle, suspended sentence and died a suspect and
[18:48] Speaker 9: Firth left probation.
[18:50] Speaker 11: That's more, I couldn't have hidden it if I wanted to.
[18:54] Speaker 2: Well, the important thing is you didn't want to. Now,
[18:57] Speaker 2: will you tell your story?
[19:00] Speaker 10: Well, Doc Whalon got the idea to promote this benefit
[19:04] Speaker 10: for disabled people.
[19:06] Speaker 11: He called me in on the deal, and I went
[19:08] Speaker 11: for it.
[19:10] Speaker 10: Jimmy was hired by the doc, and the Doc gave
[19:13] Speaker 10: him a song and dance about useful work and what
[19:15] Speaker 10: a great project it was, make the people aware of
[19:18] Speaker 10: the ableness of the disabled.
[19:20] Speaker 7: And I went for it, hook line and sink. No reason.
[19:22] Speaker 7: You shouldn't miss the dollan. It's a great idea.
[19:24] Speaker 6: I'm keeping that in mind. Go ahead, miss bran well with.
[19:28] Speaker 11: Jimmy to go around with them and soften them up.
[19:30] Speaker 11: The doc promoted half the big names in Hollywood. They
[19:35] Speaker 11: well say it.
[19:35] Speaker 7: They'd take one look at me and drown in their
[19:37] Speaker 7: own pity. I'm sorry, And I was supposed to pull
[19:40] Speaker 7: the same stunt with the Broadway in Radio Stars, only
[19:42] Speaker 7: I'm not supposed to know that's what it is.
[19:44] Speaker 2: We'll come back to that, Jimmy, go on, miss brand.
[19:47] Speaker 10: The docs set up a phony outfit, the Institute for
[19:50] Speaker 10: the Disabled, chartered in some state out west.
[19:53] Speaker 2: Yes, with himself as the sole trustee for the institute.
[19:56] Speaker 7: As we've checked that, that's right.
[19:58] Speaker 10: He was going to send a check for the pro
[20:00] Speaker 10: to the benefit to the institute, all right, and be
[20:02] Speaker 10: there himself to receive it.
[20:04] Speaker 9: He expected to get away with something that wrong.
[20:06] Speaker 10: No, mister Peters, but he expected to be out of
[20:08] Speaker 10: the country by the time it was found out.
[20:10] Speaker 6: Well, how far has the organization gone?
[20:11] Speaker 10: All the way tickets advertising, He's even got a colisseum
[20:15] Speaker 10: Hall lined up.
[20:16] Speaker 11: Now he just wants to line up some more names.
[20:18] Speaker 9: I notice he's scaled the prices on the tickets from
[20:21] Speaker 9: ten dollars up to one thousand.
[20:22] Speaker 7: There's no pocket were anything else.
[20:25] Speaker 11: M'sprin No, that's it. I'm glad it's finished.
[20:31] Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess I'm kind of sorry. Well, at least
[20:33] Speaker 7: somebody was interested in guys like me finding out that
[20:37] Speaker 7: disabled guys can do lots of jobs as well as
[20:39] Speaker 7: they did before they were cracked up.
[20:40] Speaker 11: Jimmy, don't see that.
[20:41] Speaker 7: You know, it's funny. The only guy interested was a crook,
[20:46] Speaker 7: and now he won't be around.
[20:48] Speaker 6: Jimmy.
[20:49] Speaker 2: I think he maybe for a little while.
[20:51] Speaker 11: But I don't get it.
[20:52] Speaker 2: Mister Harmer when we make an erastus for the good
[20:55] Speaker 2: of society. But I'm not sure this case is as
[20:59] Speaker 2: simple as that.
[21:00] Speaker 7: I don't understand, mister Hardy.
[21:01] Speaker 2: Well, I may be sticking my neck out, but if
[21:04] Speaker 2: we plan the how and when of doctor Whalen's arrest,
[21:07] Speaker 2: we'd be doing a lot more for society than we
[21:09] Speaker 2: would by picking him up.
[21:10] Speaker 7: Right now, how's that?
[21:11] Speaker 6: Sut him?
[21:13] Speaker 2: I've got an idea that might work if Jimmy and
[21:15] Speaker 2: VICKI will cooperate.
[21:16] Speaker 7: Oh, anything you say, mister Harney, there will be some
[21:19] Speaker 7: risk Vicky's.
[21:22] Speaker 11: Gone along with Is this far, Jimmy, I'll go all
[21:26] Speaker 11: the way.
[21:26] Speaker 2: Good, I'll make yourself comfortable. I'll tell you my plan.
[21:43] Speaker 11: She would have crawled, Jimmy. I never figured they turn
[21:46] Speaker 11: out like this. The coliseum's jams.
[21:48] Speaker 7: Yeah, but I'm wondering, where's doctor Wallen? Call?
[21:50] Speaker 11: We hear you? Stop worrying.
[21:52] Speaker 7: Well, mister Hardy's to swell about this. I'd hate for
[21:55] Speaker 7: him to get in a jam. Say you don't think
[21:57] Speaker 7: Doc Whale's wise, do you, Jimmy?
[21:59] Speaker 11: You don't think?
[22:00] Speaker 7: Oh no, no, Dad, I know you couldn't. But I
[22:06] Speaker 7: what I think about you? Well, A guy like me, shouldn't.
[22:11] Speaker 11: Jimmy, how do you know I couldn't crush out jim.
[22:18] Speaker 7: Oh, Vicky? Oh, oh, there's Doc. I guess he just
[22:22] Speaker 7: came in.
[22:23] Speaker 11: I'm looking so happy.
[22:26] Speaker 7: Hello Jimmy and vickyed splendid crowds flot well were you're
[22:29] Speaker 7: down too? He was getting worried just checking up at
[22:31] Speaker 7: the box office. Jimmy, don't you think it's time Gary
[22:33] Speaker 7: Marlow started the program? Yeah, sure, Doc, I'll tell you
[22:35] Speaker 7: he's right over there, say miss Marlow. Oh yes, Jimmy,
[22:45] Speaker 7: you want me to begin out right away? Oh and uh,
[22:48] Speaker 7: mister Marlow, don't forget that first. Guess he'll He'll be
[22:51] Speaker 7: kind of a surprise for everybody.
[22:53] Speaker 3: How could I forget him?
[22:55] Speaker 7: Well, here we go. Good luck, mister Morrow going to start, Jimmy, Yeah, yeah,
[23:04] Speaker 7: right away. That's women to Let's sit here close and
[23:07] Speaker 7: enjoyed the show.
[23:10] Speaker 6: We put a lot of work in it.
[23:11] Speaker 11: We've all put a lot of work in doctor.
[23:20] Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, thank you.
[23:25] Speaker 7: Before we begin the show, there's a special guest i'd
[23:28] Speaker 7: like to introduce right now, as he has to leave
[23:31] Speaker 7: shortly on urgent business. In fact, this gentleman is always
[23:35] Speaker 7: on urgent business leaders and gentlemen. I'm proud to present
[23:40] Speaker 7: the Chief of the United States taters fis mister David.
[23:44] Speaker 6: Harden Carter, Jimmy. How did this happen?
[23:50] Speaker 7: Special guest, Doctor Ellen, I thought it was great with
[23:53] Speaker 7: Kedemy doesn't make many public appearances.
[23:55] Speaker 6: Oh yes, great.
[23:58] Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you, thank you, mister Marlowe. Later on,
[24:03] Speaker 4: I want to ask you about a trade secret in
[24:06] Speaker 4: those western builds of yours.
[24:08] Speaker 7: How do you get.
[24:08] Speaker 4: Fifty to one hundred shots out of one six shooter revolver?
[24:15] Speaker 4: The counter spies could youse a.
[24:17] Speaker 7: Trick like that.
[24:21] Speaker 4: But seriously, ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to be
[24:25] Speaker 4: here for the purpose of this benefits is a major
[24:30] Speaker 4: importance to America. It's wonderful that more and more of
[24:35] Speaker 4: us realize that the disabled can take their places as
[24:39] Speaker 4: useful citizens. This occasion is to see that they get
[24:44] Speaker 4: their chance, not as a charity, but as a rank.
[24:55] Speaker 4: And now will the organizers of this great event come
[24:58] Speaker 4: over here, both of you, Doctor Hobart Whalen, I listed
[25:02] Speaker 4: Hardy and Jimmy Dormer. Now I have a surprise for
[25:15] Speaker 4: the audience, an actual arrest here on the platform, ladies
[25:22] Speaker 4: and gentlemen. Blendid as its affair is, it has one
[25:26] Speaker 4: black mark. It was organized by a confidence man, a swindler,
[25:31] Speaker 4: a crunch this man here, doctor Hobart whaleen, you mean
[25:35] Speaker 4: I want you.
[25:36] Speaker 1: To arrest me?
[25:37] Speaker 7: I'm gonna go bother you.
[25:39] Speaker 4: This crush streaming gores pretty good or a supposedly disabled man,
[25:51] Speaker 4: wasn't it. Now while assistant Harry Peters help mister Dover
[26:03] Speaker 4: remove the prisoner, I'll tell you the audience why we
[26:07] Speaker 4: did not cancel this benefit week to go, even though
[26:11] Speaker 4: we knew the promoter with a crook. We didn't stop
[26:15] Speaker 4: it because the cause is close to our hearts. The
[26:20] Speaker 4: counters by the employ many so called disabled men and women.
[26:24] Speaker 4: They hold key positions in our code division, communications and others.
[26:29] Speaker 4: Though we allow this benefit to go on, you may
[26:33] Speaker 4: rest assured that is the suggestion of the President's Committee
[26:36] Speaker 4: on National Employees is physically handicapped week. Your money will
[26:41] Speaker 4: go to a legitimate organization interested in its problem. And
[26:45] Speaker 4: now here is Gary Marlowe with the rest of the show.
[27:00] Speaker 7: Golly, mister Hardy, that was wonderful, wasn't it? Say it?
[27:02] Speaker 6: Certainly was hows whalem, he's unhappy.
[27:04] Speaker 9: There's two of our ragents are taking donaua field office
[27:06] Speaker 9: to be booked.
[27:07] Speaker 6: Well, then that winds up things there.
[27:08] Speaker 11: Jimmy, except for me, mister Hardy.
[27:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, what about Vicky, mister Hardy, Well, she'll have to
[27:13] Speaker 2: testify against the doctor.
[27:14] Speaker 9: Of course, But well that means jail as the material witness.
[27:17] Speaker 2: Jail of course, if someone would accept responsibility, Vicky could
[27:22] Speaker 2: be parole in his custody.
[27:23] Speaker 6: Oh, off to that, mister Hardy. How Jimmy, you don't know, Vicky.
[27:26] Speaker 7: We've stuck together this long. I can stand it a
[27:29] Speaker 7: little longer as you can, okay, mister Hardy.
[27:32] Speaker 6: Okay, Jimmy.
[27:33] Speaker 2: In fact, from the sound of things, I'd say very okay.
[27:37] Speaker 2: And by the way, when you find time, get in
[27:39] Speaker 2: touch with me about becoming a regular counter by will you, Jimmy.
[27:52] Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, It's an honor to present the following message,
[27:56] Speaker 2: especially prepared for this counters by a broadcast by the
[27:59] Speaker 2: Honorable Alvin W. Barklay, Vice President of the United States.
[28:05] Speaker 9: Today's disabled veterans and handicapped workers have the full support
[28:08] Speaker 9: of the United States government in their quest for suitable
[28:11] Speaker 9: employment opportunities. The President of the United States has established
[28:16] Speaker 9: a special civilian committee to lend assistance in discharging this
[28:20] Speaker 9: national responsibility of providing work for qualified handicapped men and women.
[28:26] Speaker 9: The response by businessmen, industrialists, and labor officials has been
[28:29] Speaker 9: highly gratifying, but we must intensify our efforts so that
[28:34] Speaker 9: a war wound or an industrial accident is not a
[28:37] Speaker 9: one way ticket to the sideline. I ask your continued
[28:41] Speaker 9: interest in those handicapped workers presently employed, and added opportunities
[28:45] Speaker 9: for those seeking work. I urge all Americans to remember
[28:49] Speaker 9: that abilities is much more important than disabilities.
[28:54] Speaker 2: Thank you very much, mister Vice President. Next week's copy
[29:00] Speaker 2: case deals with the teenage terrors who worshiped a heel,
[29:06] Speaker 2: the stolen loop that was paid for with a wet
[29:09] Speaker 2: handkerchief and hard cash, and the underworld mobster who pulled
[29:13] Speaker 2: a switch and continued to be a right guy. Be
[29:18] Speaker 2: sure to tune in next Tuesday to.
[29:20] Speaker 3: The case of a flat push Fagan on Counterspy, and
[29:25] Speaker 3: remember when your friends drop in, be generous, but be
[29:28] Speaker 3: thrifty too. Serve plenty of delicious pepsicola Pepsi's be twelve
[29:34] Speaker 3: house bottle gives you not just one sparkling glassful, but two,
[29:38] Speaker 3: get a carton of six and serve twelve delicious drink. Yes,
[29:42] Speaker 3: pepsi is America's biggest cola value. You get twice the
[29:46] Speaker 3: tangy tape, twice the refreshment, twice the pepsi. So why
[29:50] Speaker 3: take lets when pepsi is bet Whenever you reach for refreshment,
[29:55] Speaker 3: remember pepsicola pit.
[29:57] Speaker 6: The bottle, twofold.
[29:58] Speaker 2: Glasses, patt lot more values, lots more Petsy, I take
[30:02] Speaker 2: less when.
[30:05] Speaker 3: Tonight's counter Spy program, originated in New York, was directed
[30:09] Speaker 3: by William M. Sweet, dramatized by Palmer Thompson, and feature
[30:13] Speaker 3: Don McLachlan and Mandel Kramer, with music by Jesse Crawford.
[30:17] Speaker 3: Counter Spy is a Phillips h LAYD production for Pepsicola.
[30:22] Speaker 3: Enjoy some pepsi ice cold Tonight.
[30:39] Speaker 7: Welcome back.
[30:40] Speaker 6: Well.
[30:41] Speaker 1: I have to say that Alvin Barkley has never sounded
[30:45] Speaker 1: so much like Mandel Kramer before. This does actually happen
[30:51] Speaker 1: in old time radio on occasion where you would have
[30:55] Speaker 1: a major public official lot Jed or Hoover wanting to
[30:59] Speaker 1: speak to a program's content, but you have an actor
[31:04] Speaker 1: go ahead and read a statement from them instead, And
[31:09] Speaker 1: this can be to simplify the process and also to
[31:13] Speaker 1: provide the best quality that can If the political leader
[31:18] Speaker 1: is not able to be in a station at the
[31:21] Speaker 1: time of the broadcast, which is usually, it's not going
[31:25] Speaker 1: to work out that you have to go through a
[31:29] Speaker 1: process to get a recording made and transmitted in time
[31:35] Speaker 1: for the broadcast. And on those occasions where I've heard
[31:39] Speaker 1: like a pre recorded message put in there is a
[31:43] Speaker 1: visible dropping audio quality. Was it makes the politician sound good?
[31:49] Speaker 1: I can imagine the unobservant listener at home say, yeah,
[31:53] Speaker 1: I thought Berkley might be too old for the job.
[31:56] Speaker 1: He's in his seventies, but he certainly said vigorous. Of course,
[32:02] Speaker 1: on other programs, like there was an episode of Family
[32:05] Speaker 1: Theater where they had someone appearing that way, they noted
[32:10] Speaker 1: that the person was impersonated. Now, of course, this is
[32:16] Speaker 1: yet another program with a very strong PSA focus and
[32:22] Speaker 1: certainly raising a very important issue about the need of
[32:27] Speaker 1: disabled veterans to find not just support, but the ability
[32:34] Speaker 1: to work with dignity. This has been a message that
[32:40] Speaker 1: you can hear across multiple programs in multiple different genres
[32:45] Speaker 1: and counterspy was carrying that message. They of course became
[32:50] Speaker 1: involved in a somewhat improbable way. While it was true
[32:54] Speaker 1: that there were some shady charities running around in the
[32:58] Speaker 1: nineteen forty, there was no organization that did preemptive investigations
[33:07] Speaker 1: of charitable events. Certainly the crooks would have been aware
[33:11] Speaker 1: of this if nothing else, and even if you were,
[33:15] Speaker 1: As we have said a few times, imagine that counterspy
[33:20] Speaker 1: is the FBI. Imagine JEdgar Hoover getting involved with routine
[33:28] Speaker 1: background checks or ANYBI director getting involved in those sort
[33:33] Speaker 1: of things. So this is yet another case of counterspy
[33:37] Speaker 1: really stretching its jurisdiction in order to tell the story
[33:41] Speaker 1: it wanted to tell, which was an important one. All right, Well,
[33:45] Speaker 1: now it's time to thank or Patreon supporter of the day,
[33:49] Speaker 1: and I want to thank David, Patreon supporter since January
