[2:08] Speaker 2: When it's September and the summer sighs away. Broadway is
[2:12] Speaker 2: festooned with the colors of fall, the pastels of the
[2:15] Speaker 2: cotton dresses mixed sadly with the brown and gray of
[2:18] Speaker 2: the flannel. And here and there Broadway shape leaf foliage
[2:21] Speaker 2: turns to plant. It's the time of the quickened step
[2:24] Speaker 2: and the crumpled travel folder and coney died beaver, and
[2:28] Speaker 2: the September song is a deep throated sound, the mob voice,
[2:32] Speaker 2: the hay fever, and the oysters being torn from the
[2:34] Speaker 2: half shell. Another season, Kid, one more, three months, band
[2:38] Speaker 2: to get where You're going in the autumn days have
[2:48] Speaker 2: their six o'clock in the morning time, the just beginning
[2:50] Speaker 2: another daytime. It was a street where Broadway turns a
[2:53] Speaker 2: corner into the forties, where I was a detective muggabin
[2:57] Speaker 2: and a woman.
[2:58] Speaker 4: She's in here Danny car, but they're on the floor
[3:05] Speaker 4: in front.
[3:07] Speaker 2: Who is she?
[3:08] Speaker 4: Well, I don't know, no identification, no handbag, just.
[3:11] Speaker 2: This car registered to Edward Bishop E sixtieth.
[3:16] Speaker 4: Uh huh slippers in the glove compartment who found her.
[3:19] Speaker 5: Officer Captain tagged it late last night for traffic violation
[3:22] Speaker 5: parking five o'clock when he was going off duty.
[3:25] Speaker 4: You noticed the car.
[3:26] Speaker 5: Still wasn't moved opened it looked found under that blanket.
[3:31] Speaker 5: Let's say she was about twenty seven.
[3:36] Speaker 2: Shot once in the back from up close.
[3:39] Speaker 4: Yeah, death probably instantaneous. Here they are, Danny in the
[3:45] Speaker 4: front of the car.
[3:46] Speaker 2: Doc.
[3:48] Speaker 4: Hey, you're a new doc.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Don't move her. Doctor, wait for the photographers.
[3:53] Speaker 4: But don't you stand there, Doc.
[3:54] Speaker 2: You got it.
[3:57] Speaker 4: You'll get used to it. Kid, this kind of thing happens, and.
[4:04] Speaker 2: The cluster of the walkers to work. The people of
[4:06] Speaker 2: the subway glad for the delay of the dead woman.
[4:09] Speaker 2: The dead woman, who lies at the beginning of another
[4:11] Speaker 2: day stops it for a time, holds it the desolate
[4:14] Speaker 2: pause the time for turning back, But the hungry day
[4:18] Speaker 2: will not wait. Subways are empty and must be filled.
[4:21] Speaker 2: The clever machines in the offices long for the fluttering
[4:24] Speaker 2: caress of quick fingers. Can't stop for the dead kid.
[4:27] Speaker 2: A buck has to be made. Give someone else your
[4:29] Speaker 2: place in line and in the corridor of the address.
[4:36] Speaker 2: On the registration's slip. A woman in a raveled coat
[4:39] Speaker 2: sweater sweeps away the night litter and autumn mists, gathers
[4:43] Speaker 2: them on a dust pan, throws them into the street.
[4:46] Speaker 2: You ask for Edward Bishop, and she shrugs you to
[4:48] Speaker 2: a scarred door at the end of the hall. Watch
[4:50] Speaker 2: us you as your knock waits with you for the
[4:53] Speaker 2: door to open.
[4:54] Speaker 6: You're an early bird mistake police.
[4:56] Speaker 2: The woman drops her broom scurries away to tell her
[4:59] Speaker 2: friends and neighbors.
[5:00] Speaker 6: Early bird out to catch a worm. Harmester, not me,
[5:02] Speaker 6: not for something I've done. I never do anything.
[5:04] Speaker 2: Bad, you, Edward Bishop, Oh not me.
[5:06] Speaker 6: Mister Bishop's my roomy, he gone and done something naughty.
[5:10] Speaker 6: Come in, mister and tell me all about it.
[5:13] Speaker 2: Where is he? Oh?
[5:14] Speaker 6: Out frying his nightly kettle of fish. I presume his
[5:16] Speaker 6: bedding's been slepting. No, huh, Oh, why that hollow you
[5:21] Speaker 6: see in the bedclothes where I tried it. I'm an experimenter.
[5:24] Speaker 6: As long as he wasn't in it. I thought my
[5:26] Speaker 6: roomy's bed might be better than my own.
[5:28] Speaker 7: It wasn't.
[5:30] Speaker 6: Mister Bishop's gone and done something naughty.
[5:32] Speaker 2: Huh you know where he is.
[5:33] Speaker 6: I want to tell you something about mister Bishop, my roomy.
[5:36] Speaker 6: He's a tight lip man, rock face. I call him
[5:38] Speaker 6: when he ain't looking. That's because he never whispers a
[5:41] Speaker 6: secret to me or shares a coke when I offer
[5:43] Speaker 6: am part of mine. He just lets me dab his
[5:45] Speaker 6: hanky with cologne sometimes when he's going out for a
[5:48] Speaker 6: heavy evening.
[5:48] Speaker 2: He had a lot of them evenings like that.
[5:50] Speaker 6: Well, for a man who has to shave twice a day,
[5:52] Speaker 6: he has more than his share.
[5:54] Speaker 2: You wouldn't know with whom I might.
[5:57] Speaker 6: But first you tell me what my roomy did to you.
[6:00] Speaker 2: Maybe you'd find it cozier down at headquarters. Maybe that
[6:02] Speaker 2: Japanese Kimona you weare makes it work getting rough.
[6:05] Speaker 6: Hello there, mister. I'll tell you what I know, then
[6:08] Speaker 6: you tell me what you know. Huh, My room he's
[6:12] Speaker 6: been squiring a lady by the name of Anna Compton.
[6:15] Speaker 2: You know her.
[6:15] Speaker 6: We'll just talk to on the phone. A lovely voice
[6:19] Speaker 6: haunts you.
[6:20] Speaker 2: Once you talked to her last, oh.
[6:21] Speaker 6: Two or three days ago. I'll tell you just how
[6:24] Speaker 6: it was. She kept calling here evenings, asking my roomy
[6:27] Speaker 6: to call her back. Just leave her name, Anna Compton,
[6:32] Speaker 6: My roomy squiring a married lady.
[6:34] Speaker 2: Bishop never shared anything with you, and still I'll.
[6:37] Speaker 6: Tell you about that too. Her haunting voice made me nervous.
[6:40] Speaker 6: I told you I'm an experimenter. So one day I
[6:43] Speaker 6: sat down with the phone book and called every Compton
[6:46] Speaker 6: there is. Then a man answered and said his wife,
[6:48] Speaker 6: Anna wasn't home. Who was calling? Of course I hung up.
[6:52] Speaker 2: Then you know her address in the new Rochelle.
[6:54] Speaker 6: Phone book for everyone's eyes to see. Now it's your turn.
[6:59] Speaker 6: What did mister bish do?
[7:00] Speaker 2: A woman was found murdered in his car?
[7:03] Speaker 6: My own mind. That's as naughty as you can get it,
[7:06] Speaker 6: ain't it?
[7:10] Speaker 2: Mister Blackburn said that. Then mister Blackburn reached over to
[7:13] Speaker 2: my lapel, pinched off a piece hanging from the button
[7:16] Speaker 2: hole and dangled it accusingly under my nose. This is
[7:20] Speaker 2: the way I left, mister Blackburn. Then back to headquarters,
[7:28] Speaker 2: issue an all points bulletin for Edward Bishop. Then down
[7:31] Speaker 2: one flight to the photo lap behanded a picture, tuck
[7:34] Speaker 2: it in the black notebook where you've jotted the name
[7:36] Speaker 2: of Leo Compton and his address in you roshell. Then
[7:39] Speaker 2: the ride there to the community where the houses have
[7:42] Speaker 2: the built in attitude that violent death never visits here.
[7:45] Speaker 2: In the next street, maybe it happens or to a
[7:48] Speaker 2: friend of a friend, but it never happens here.
[7:53] Speaker 6: Anna, Anna, is that you.
[7:58] Speaker 8: Wash your king?
[8:00] Speaker 2: Annah? Where have you been? Your name Compton, Leo Compton.
[8:04] Speaker 2: I'm from the police. My name is Danny Clover. Oh yeah,
[8:08] Speaker 2: mind if I come in? Well, I guess so.
[8:10] Speaker 7: Right, Oh wait a minute, wait a minute there, yeah, police,
[8:16] Speaker 7: mister Compton. It's about Anna. It's about Anna, isn't it.
[8:20] Speaker 7: What's happened to her?
[8:21] Speaker 2: Listen to me, mister all right, all right, I'm listening.
[8:23] Speaker 2: Is Anna your wife?
[8:24] Speaker 9: Yes?
[8:25] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, this this woman? This picture I have here?
[8:28] Speaker 7: Yes, that's Anna?
[8:29] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[8:31] Speaker 7: How did you get there? How'd you get Anna's picture?
[8:33] Speaker 2: I wish I knew someone to say this.
[8:37] Speaker 7: Anna's dead.
[8:38] Speaker 2: We found her this morning. She'd been shot.
[8:41] Speaker 7: Oh.
[8:42] Speaker 2: She her body's at the morgue.
[8:45] Speaker 7: And I've got to ask you, No, I.
[8:48] Speaker 2: Know she didn't come home last night, mister Compton.
[8:51] Speaker 7: No, No, you're wrong. She came home. Anna came home
[8:55] Speaker 7: to me. It was my fault. Really, I sent her away.
[9:01] Speaker 7: I told her I didn't care. And the things I
[9:05] Speaker 7: said to her, the names suppose the last words you
[9:09] Speaker 7: ever said to your wife?
[9:11] Speaker 2: Names like that? What happened last night, mister Compton?
[9:15] Speaker 7: She came home. He was about seven yesterday evening, and
[9:20] Speaker 7: she had the bracelet on.
[9:22] Speaker 2: She was wearing a bracelet when we found her, she had.
[9:24] Speaker 7: The bracelet on and I asked her where she got
[9:26] Speaker 7: such an expensive bracelet to wear, and she said she
[9:30] Speaker 7: got a bargain.
[9:32] Speaker 2: A bargain.
[9:33] Speaker 7: What do you mean from her boyfriend? Oh, she told me.
[9:36] Speaker 7: And I told me all right, and listen, listen.
[9:39] Speaker 2: You know what I did.
[9:40] Speaker 7: I called him up. I'm not narrow minded. Things can happen.
[9:44] Speaker 7: Just because it's your wife doesn't mean it can't happen.
[9:47] Speaker 7: I called her boyfriend up and I told him to
[9:50] Speaker 7: come over. I'd pay him for the bracelet.
[9:52] Speaker 2: Did he come home?
[9:52] Speaker 7: Oh?
[9:53] Speaker 2: He came over.
[9:54] Speaker 7: Anna was stunted, all right, And I wrote a check
[9:57] Speaker 7: for the bracelet two hundred dollars. Don't you think Anna
[9:59] Speaker 7: was mister?
[10:01] Speaker 2: You know what she did?
[10:02] Speaker 7: She left with him anyhow, bracelets check she and him.
[10:09] Speaker 7: And that's when I saw the man's name, Bishop, Edward Bishop.
[10:12] Speaker 7: He's an auctioneer for the Hunter Galleries. Oh there's something else. Yes,
[10:20] Speaker 7: I'll call Franda. I'll take her out of that place
[10:24] Speaker 7: where she is. Come in off the avenue.
[10:42] Speaker 10: The America's mister behind his dirty shop windows, there are boggains.
[10:48] Speaker 2: Edward Bishop worked here.
[10:51] Speaker 7: He did till he killed himself. A woman ran up
[10:53] Speaker 7: a parking ticket.
[10:54] Speaker 2: You know all that for sure.
[10:57] Speaker 7: I know Eddie. He works for me.
[10:59] Speaker 2: The pitch end or pitchment, the spiel that kills.
[11:03] Speaker 7: That's Eddie Bishop.
[11:06] Speaker 10: He talking to buying something.
[11:07] Speaker 4: You don't like.
[11:08] Speaker 2: Mister, you said he killed her? Why you're a cop?
[11:12] Speaker 11: Ain't you.
[11:14] Speaker 10: Come inside?
[11:15] Speaker 2: I brew you something warm?
[11:16] Speaker 10: It gets cold for everybody on the avenue. No, I'll
[11:20] Speaker 10: leave the door open a look him.
[11:23] Speaker 7: I want to come into browse.
[11:26] Speaker 2: That's how it is in the world.
[11:28] Speaker 10: Lookers, browsers, handlers then walk out, just like my Eddie.
[11:39] Speaker 2: You want to sip of the warm brew. Why did
[11:41] Speaker 2: you say he killed her?
[11:46] Speaker 10: It's in Eddie to do a thing like that. It's
[11:48] Speaker 10: what's about him that fascinates a girl that in the
[11:52] Speaker 10: clever way he handles an auctioneer's hammer. I could show
[11:56] Speaker 10: you a three time bruise three times and your soul
[12:00] Speaker 10: and a man like Eddie.
[12:01] Speaker 2: You're reading the papers a woman has found dead in
[12:04] Speaker 2: Bishop's car, and that makes you know he's a murderer.
[12:06] Speaker 10: Fact, and the way he spoke my name. Sometimes after
[12:09] Speaker 10: we closed up the shop, Zoe. He'd say to me,
[12:13] Speaker 10: Zoe killed the long day for me.
[12:17] Speaker 7: You don't argue with a man like Eddie when he.
[12:19] Speaker 2: Talks like that. You knew Missus Compton.
[12:23] Speaker 10: When the summer began to fade, Eddie started talking to
[12:26] Speaker 10: me about her. How she looked when she walked in
[12:28] Speaker 10: one day to bit on an object of art. Then
[12:31] Speaker 10: how she looked over a cocktail, a corner bar, and
[12:35] Speaker 10: then how it was with the lights of coney on
[12:37] Speaker 10: her face, and in Eddie's car and a long way
[12:39] Speaker 10: and you Rachelle all this, my auctioneer told me. That's
[12:46] Speaker 10: how I know the dead Missus Compton. I'm glad for her.
[12:51] Speaker 2: You never saw her with him.
[12:54] Speaker 10: It was last night. I watched from behind the counter.
[12:58] Speaker 10: I saw her shove her wristed Eddie. Eddie put a
[13:00] Speaker 10: bracelet on it when he bought from stock.
[13:03] Speaker 6: I thought it was for me, right he did it.
[13:07] Speaker 2: It was like that for them. Why would he kill her?
[13:10] Speaker 2: Who knows?
[13:11] Speaker 10: Maybe she rubbed him the wrong way, Maybe she asked
[13:14] Speaker 10: him for it. Eddie was a man to oblige a lady.
[13:18] Speaker 2: All right, thank you.
[13:20] Speaker 10: UH do something for me, mister, what you find Eddie Bishop,
[13:25] Speaker 10: give him my message. Tell him I want an invite
[13:28] Speaker 10: to his execution. It's been a dull season.
[13:36] Speaker 4: Danny, hold the hair in a squad cut.
[13:40] Speaker 2: You got something?
[13:41] Speaker 5: Well, maybe maybe not. The guy was found dead in
[13:44] Speaker 5: the building excavation over on third. Nobody wants to touch him.
[13:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go drive down the ramp, munk of him.
[14:02] Speaker 4: Yeah, this sidewalk. Superintendent's really got something to stare right now?
[14:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Hey, what happened, mister.
[14:17] Speaker 8: I'm gonna scup Clappen. I far ago had decided to
[14:20] Speaker 8: scratch this ground first, scope full of shovel.
[14:22] Speaker 2: Come up with with him. Let's get it down.
[14:24] Speaker 12: Huh okay, yeah, real good.
[14:39] Speaker 4: I'll take a look shot, Danny. Here's a waller.
[14:46] Speaker 2: Look at this check for two hundred dollars signed by
[14:50] Speaker 2: Leo Compton.
[14:51] Speaker 5: Uh, head of the Order of Edward Bishop, Edward Bishop.
[14:56] Speaker 7: He's a man we figured murder, Dona Compton.
[14:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, the man we figured murder Donna Compton. Well, would
[15:05] Speaker 2: you say, Danny, not please? I didn't say anything at all.
[15:21] Speaker 3: You were listening to Broadways My Beat, written by Morton
[15:24] Speaker 3: Fine and David Friedkin and starring Larry Thor as Detective
[15:28] Speaker 3: Danny Clover. Singers Alan Dale and Sarah Vaughan will be
[15:32] Speaker 3: Steve Allen's guests on Songs for Sale just a little
[15:34] Speaker 3: later tonight, once again, Steve will be playing host to
[15:38] Speaker 3: four amateur songwriters and their unpublished songs, one of which
[15:41] Speaker 3: will be chosen for nationwide hearing for Merriment and Melody
[15:46] Speaker 3: Here Songs for Sale later tonight on most of these
[15:48] Speaker 3: same CBS radio stations.
[16:00] Speaker 2: September Morn dips a dainty toe into a Broadway billboard
[16:04] Speaker 2: and unshivering, gazes down upon a street that only yesterday
[16:07] Speaker 2: was choked with summer. But the refuse is there, where
[16:11] Speaker 2: summer has passed and left pieces of itself in the
[16:14] Speaker 2: scratch and warp of summertime. Blue still screeching out of
[16:17] Speaker 2: the loud speakers, the sunny Mannikins wax slightly melted, waiting
[16:21] Speaker 2: in shop windows to be replaced by the fall and
[16:23] Speaker 2: winter models, the faint odors of the sun warm perfume,
[16:27] Speaker 2: the souvenir of the golden girl who walked right pasture,
[16:30] Speaker 2: turned a corner, vanished into a place where summer never dies.
[16:34] Speaker 2: A place not open to you, kid, Only Autumn's ahead
[16:37] Speaker 2: of you. Kid, Start using it. It's already given you
[16:41] Speaker 2: two murders. A woman in the front seat of a car,
[16:43] Speaker 2: a man scooped out of the earth on the teeth
[16:45] Speaker 2: of a steam shovel. What more can you ask? September
[16:49] Speaker 2: showering her gifts on you, kid, Take them. They're all yours,
[16:59] Speaker 2: and it had Sergeant at TAGLEI. It brings you your
[17:02] Speaker 2: share of them, holds them from you with a smile.
[17:04] Speaker 2: At shows he slept well last night.
[17:06] Speaker 8: He accumulated Adam's and the murderers, Danny in these papers,
[17:10] Speaker 8: I teased before you have a good night, Geno, no
[17:12] Speaker 8: complaints come to mind, Danny. The evening was a folsome one.
[17:15] Speaker 8: Father McCleary came to call. A pleasant time was had
[17:18] Speaker 8: by all, as is our usual procedure.
[17:20] Speaker 2: Father McCleary is a fine man.
[17:22] Speaker 8: Salt of the earth. I asked missus t to break
[17:25] Speaker 8: open a bottle of Mogan dove with wine. We don't
[17:27] Speaker 8: even blink an eye. SIPs with your talks with you
[17:30] Speaker 8: brings presents for the Tartaglia brood. This is a man
[17:34] Speaker 8: who also brings you the gift of RESTful sleep.
[17:36] Speaker 2: Remember me to him, Gino.
[17:38] Speaker 8: Roger will call now to the papers I am about
[17:41] Speaker 8: to be stole upon you. In them you will find
[17:43] Speaker 8: a report from technical to it. The bullets that killed
[17:46] Speaker 8: Missus Compton and mister Bishop. Technical states came from the
[17:49] Speaker 8: same gun markings are identical. The run down on the
[17:52] Speaker 8: past histories of Missus Compton and mister Bishop is contained
[17:55] Speaker 8: in reports from interested neighbors and relatives gathered by Look You.
[18:02] Speaker 8: Standard operating procedure is to knock when one desires a
[18:05] Speaker 8: moment of danny.
[18:06] Speaker 2: Come, mister Compton.
[18:08] Speaker 7: I've come to demand and I intend to not leaving
[18:12] Speaker 7: here until you give it to me.
[18:13] Speaker 2: What would that be?
[18:14] Speaker 7: Anna's bracelet, the one that everyone's dead. It belongs to.
[18:19] Speaker 2: Me because you gave Bishop a two hundred dollars check
[18:22] Speaker 2: for it.
[18:22] Speaker 7: I stopped payment on my check after all that that
[18:25] Speaker 7: mister Bishop did give it to Anna. I needn't have
[18:28] Speaker 7: made that stupid gesture. And now she's dead and he's dead.
[18:33] Speaker 2: Yes, your wife is dead. You loved her.
[18:36] Speaker 7: You told me the bracelet's mine. You want to quipple
[18:39] Speaker 7: about it, have me spend money on lawyers.
[18:41] Speaker 2: You're right, mister Compton, it's yours. Take it. We've no
[18:45] Speaker 2: more use for it. We have photographs.
[18:48] Speaker 7: You understand. It's not the money, It's only that if
[18:52] Speaker 7: it once belonged to her, it now belongs to me.
[18:55] Speaker 2: It's a kind of remembrance of the dead.
[18:57] Speaker 7: Well, I'm not going to think about it. I have
[18:59] Speaker 7: enough trouble o living in an empty house with no
[19:02] Speaker 7: one to scrimp and save all my life. Share it
[19:05] Speaker 7: with missus Compton and the cost of things, mister Clover,
[19:08] Speaker 7: it's outrageous food, furniture, clothes and transportation. You know what
[19:12] Speaker 7: cab fair cost me from you, Rochelle five sixty. It's outrageous.
[19:17] Speaker 2: He could have come in another way.
[19:18] Speaker 7: Oh yes, me mock dad pointed to as the husband
[19:21] Speaker 7: of a murdered woman. They put my picture in the paper,
[19:23] Speaker 7: you know, and that makes me a curiosity, a freak.
[19:25] Speaker 2: You didn't tell me when I last saw you, mister Compton,
[19:28] Speaker 2: what did you do after your wife left you with Bishop?
[19:32] Speaker 2: I said, what did you do? Go anywhere to talk
[19:34] Speaker 2: to her?
[19:34] Speaker 7: And of course I talked to someone. A man's wife
[19:37] Speaker 7: walks out in him when he's given her all. This
[19:40] Speaker 7: Mervin Maygo. He's an old friend from boyhood. I go
[19:44] Speaker 7: to him whenever I'm in trouble. He's a professional helper.
[19:47] Speaker 7: He's in that business.
[19:48] Speaker 2: He makes money by helping people.
[19:49] Speaker 7: He runs a mission on East fortieth. You like him,
[19:52] Speaker 7: I think, well, thank.
[19:54] Speaker 2: You, mister Clover.
[19:55] Speaker 7: You were easier to deal with than I thought. Danny,
[20:03] Speaker 7: a man's wife is murdered and comes back for Dannie.
[20:07] Speaker 2: You think it's something to think about, Uh Jim, it
[20:14] Speaker 2: was something to think about. Consider a man whose wife
[20:17] Speaker 2: had been murdered. Consider in space of twenty four hours,
[20:20] Speaker 2: his tears had dried, The shock of death had dwindled
[20:23] Speaker 2: into something much more negotiable, a two hundred dollars bracelet,
[20:26] Speaker 2: for example, the grief tempered by the high cost of
[20:29] Speaker 2: taxi cab fairs. Leo Compton had motive enough to commit
[20:33] Speaker 2: two murders his wife because she had run out on
[20:36] Speaker 2: am Edward Bishop because he had run with her. Motives
[20:39] Speaker 2: certainly so check on his story item. He was a
[20:43] Speaker 2: man who needed companionship at the time of stress, specifically
[20:46] Speaker 2: liked to talk to a man who ran a mission.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Go to the man who ran a mission and ask questions.
[20:51] Speaker 11: Glad you came to see me, mister Clover, I really
[20:53] Speaker 11: am so am I mister megel Now he doesn't check
[20:56] Speaker 11: aboards and a few back issue magazines. You'll admit that
[20:58] Speaker 11: I do the best I can. Then there's always the
[21:01] Speaker 11: coffee and doughnuts. The boys expect them standing fair for
[21:04] Speaker 11: places like this.
[21:05] Speaker 2: Sure.
[21:05] Speaker 11: Now, at once I got a bright idea put in
[21:08] Speaker 11: a ping pong pong table, build it myself, you know,
[21:11] Speaker 11: ping pong for the boys, a little physical exercise. What
[21:14] Speaker 11: happened The boys didn't understand about ping pong, took down
[21:17] Speaker 11: the net, made a back stop out of the old magazines.
[21:20] Speaker 2: Well, I confiscated the dice loaded. How often does Leo
[21:25] Speaker 2: Compton come down here?
[21:27] Speaker 11: Sometimes? Often, sometimes not for months at a time, whenever
[21:31] Speaker 11: Leo feels the need, need of what some one to
[21:34] Speaker 11: talk to? But why do you because he doesn't have
[21:37] Speaker 11: to explain himself to me. The embarrassment of bearing himself
[21:40] Speaker 11: to some one doesn't have to be done. I know him,
[21:43] Speaker 11: mister Clover, I know him. Well, that's what I want
[21:46] Speaker 11: you to tell me about, mister Meghan. I guess it
[21:49] Speaker 11: was twenty years ago I met Leo. We went to
[21:52] Speaker 11: the same summer camp in the Catskills, a charity camp.
[21:56] Speaker 11: I was his big brother as signed with the councilor
[21:58] Speaker 11: you know, the older camper. I showed him how to
[22:01] Speaker 11: put a French tuck in a bed. He's swimming, buddy, you.
[22:04] Speaker 2: Know, uh huh. And since then, when whenever he got
[22:07] Speaker 2: into tron.
[22:08] Speaker 11: Himself for with the world, he came to me, I
[22:11] Speaker 11: like to think I unnecessary to Leo.
[22:13] Speaker 2: I can understand.
[22:14] Speaker 11: Leo is a product, mister Clover, the making of a living,
[22:17] Speaker 11: the back ground of poverty. Even now now that he's
[22:21] Speaker 11: fairly well to do, it still eats him. What does
[22:24] Speaker 11: Even at camp, the pattern was there. He would organize
[22:27] Speaker 11: little card games after lights out, wouldn't play himself, but
[22:31] Speaker 11: took a cut from every part that sort of thing
[22:34] Speaker 11: all his life.
[22:34] Speaker 2: I see, tell me something else will? His wife ran
[22:37] Speaker 2: out on him. He came down here to talk to you.
[22:40] Speaker 2: What did he say? Not a whole lot. He told
[22:43] Speaker 2: me the story. I listened. It's just about all he
[22:46] Speaker 2: wanted down here, he told you, And then he went home.
[22:48] Speaker 2: Is that it not? Right away? He told me.
[22:51] Speaker 11: And then the boys started to straggle in for their
[22:52] Speaker 11: coffee and donuts.
[22:54] Speaker 2: He joined them. He always does.
[22:56] Speaker 11: He ate four of those donuts.
[22:57] Speaker 2: Mister Clover. See you for a minute, Danny, Oh sure, Magavin?
[23:11] Speaker 2: What is it what you talk to?
[23:12] Speaker 4: Man?
[23:13] Speaker 2: God?
[23:13] Speaker 4: Mister Scott, This is mister Scott. Danny, mister Scott, Lieutenant Clover.
[23:19] Speaker 2: Well, sit down, mister Scott, sure right there, I'll be fine.
[23:23] Speaker 4: Go ahead, mister Scott, get the lieutenant to bracelet.
[23:27] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[23:28] Speaker 13: I thought it was the right thing to do, Lieutenant Cloven.
[23:32] Speaker 13: I saw the man's picture on the paper mixed up
[23:34] Speaker 13: in a murder, and then that he should all of
[23:36] Speaker 13: a sudden the crim not out of the side of
[23:40] Speaker 13: his mouth.
[23:41] Speaker 2: Off of this. Where did you get this blet? Missus Scotton?
[23:43] Speaker 13: I told you didn't.
[23:44] Speaker 2: I oh, I'm sorry. Would you mind telling me again?
[23:47] Speaker 2: Go ahead, mister Scott, please do well.
[23:50] Speaker 13: Here I was walking toward the subway entrance on fifty
[23:53] Speaker 13: ninth Street, and he come up to me. Who didn't
[23:55] Speaker 13: the man whose picture was in the paper about his
[23:57] Speaker 13: wife's being slaying? That so means le o'comp I mean
[24:00] Speaker 13: Leo Compton. He plucked my sleeve. He offered a sum
[24:03] Speaker 13: he is bracelet. He said he was making deliveries for
[24:06] Speaker 13: jewelry concern, and the pricelet was left over, and nobody
[24:09] Speaker 13: seemed to know where it comes from.
[24:11] Speaker 2: Uh huh, how much did you pay for it, mister Scott?
[24:13] Speaker 2: Ridiculous price?
[24:15] Speaker 13: He has five dollars and sixty cents for it, and
[24:17] Speaker 13: that's what I give him. You might as well know Tooty.
[24:20] Speaker 13: He kept turning his face for me, but I certainly
[24:22] Speaker 13: recognized him. That's why I've come.
[24:24] Speaker 2: Here, muggav and right, mister Scott, a voucher for five
[24:27] Speaker 2: sixty And thank you very much. Mister Scott.
[24:40] Speaker 5: You call me and Danny and you asked me to
[24:42] Speaker 5: step over into a department that's not strictly mine.
[24:45] Speaker 4: And why don't you wait for the reports of technically?
[24:48] Speaker 2: All I want is an opinion, doctor Sinski. Who's tolls
[24:50] Speaker 2: did you step on? If you give me that gordon.
[24:53] Speaker 4: Of technical All right? Say he disaves toast smash he
[24:57] Speaker 4: once in a while. What do you want of me?
[24:59] Speaker 11: Danny?
[24:59] Speaker 2: You examin and Missus Compton. The bullet wound, the type
[25:03] Speaker 2: of wound where it was in her back? Is it
[25:05] Speaker 2: one that would bleed freely?
[25:06] Speaker 7: Yes?
[25:07] Speaker 2: Danny, you know these things as well as I. Why
[25:09] Speaker 2: I got these photographs? Look at them? The inside of
[25:13] Speaker 2: the car where Missus Compton was found. Mmmm, well, doctor Sinsky,
[25:20] Speaker 2: you know as well as I tell me. Anyway, I
[25:23] Speaker 2: want to be sure.
[25:24] Speaker 5: It is obvious that the loss of blood in the
[25:26] Speaker 5: car was slight, which makes it to me apparent that
[25:29] Speaker 5: the woman was not shot in the car, but somewhere
[25:31] Speaker 5: else and.
[25:32] Speaker 4: Then put into the car.
[25:33] Speaker 7: And I'm a doctor, Danny.
[25:37] Speaker 4: I didn't mean it to sound like that.
[25:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the opinion, doctor Sisky.
[25:52] Speaker 6: It's all around in the backyard, go.
[25:54] Speaker 10: Through the gate.
[26:08] Speaker 7: Well, I hope you appreciate me creating all this stuff
[26:10] Speaker 7: for it, weren't you, mister clot Moving day, mister Compton,
[26:15] Speaker 7: Eh oh no, no, no, my wife's things.
[26:17] Speaker 2: It's hard to deliver it. I see giving them away, huh, well,
[26:20] Speaker 2: not exactly selling them.
[26:22] Speaker 7: I saw an ad in the paper where they buy merchandisely,
[26:25] Speaker 7: oh yes, yes, I am selling Anna's clothes.
[26:28] Speaker 2: How much you're getting for them? I'm curious five sixty
[26:32] Speaker 2: for a bracelet worth two hundred. A man like you
[26:34] Speaker 2: to do that strange?
[26:36] Speaker 7: How do you know about the bracelet?
[26:38] Speaker 2: The man you saw that you get scared?
[26:40] Speaker 7: The bracelet was mine cell. Why should he get scared?
[26:43] Speaker 2: That's not the point, mister Compton. The point is why
[26:45] Speaker 2: you should sell such a valuable bracelet for so little.
[26:47] Speaker 2: You could have gotten more.
[26:49] Speaker 7: I got what I wanted.
[26:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess you did. You broke even Bishop gave
[26:54] Speaker 2: your wife the bracelets, so legally it's yours, but you'd
[26:56] Speaker 2: paid him. I told you that you gave him the
[26:59] Speaker 2: check so we'd find it on so your story of
[27:01] Speaker 2: what happened the night of your wife's death would hold up.
[27:03] Speaker 2: But with Bishop dead, the bracelet legally yours. Anyhow, Why
[27:06] Speaker 2: should you be liable for the check his A state
[27:08] Speaker 2: would have the check cash.
[27:09] Speaker 7: Well, that's right I did. I gave him a check for.
[27:11] Speaker 2: Stop payment on it, that's right.
[27:13] Speaker 7: Why should I spend money? I don't have to. Sure
[27:16] Speaker 7: you see what I mean? Don't you?
[27:18] Speaker 2: Sure? You know? You're a funny man, mister Cumt.
[27:22] Speaker 7: I guess people say that about me.
[27:24] Speaker 2: I don't care. You're so careful with money, and you're
[27:27] Speaker 2: an honest man. But you couldn't stand having that bracelet around.
[27:30] Speaker 2: It was a symbol of what your wife did to you,
[27:33] Speaker 2: so you sold it for the cost of your cab
[27:35] Speaker 2: fare even all round.
[27:38] Speaker 7: That's how much you know. I lost plenty, I lost
[27:43] Speaker 7: my wife.
[27:44] Speaker 2: You're a funny man.
[27:45] Speaker 7: I told you my wife had a boyfriend, and I
[27:47] Speaker 7: was ready to forgive her. She walked out of me anyhow, Oh,
[27:50] Speaker 7: she would have come.
[27:51] Speaker 2: Back don't it already killed her? When you called bishop,
[27:55] Speaker 2: I can't.
[27:57] Speaker 7: I told you, I told you how it was.
[27:59] Speaker 2: I said that when bishop arrived, you killed him too.
[28:01] Speaker 2: Wrote out a check and stuck it in his pocket.
[28:03] Speaker 2: Put your wife and bishop and Bishop's cars. If she
[28:06] Speaker 2: left with him, she did.
[28:07] Speaker 7: I told her, Oh, you didn't listen at all.
[28:09] Speaker 2: I could call technical, they'd find blood in your house
[28:12] Speaker 2: no matter how hard you scrubbed.
[28:15] Speaker 7: You don't understand anything.
[28:19] Speaker 2: I worked hard.
[28:20] Speaker 7: Oh my life. I put my own price on things.
[28:23] Speaker 7: My wife belonged to me. She was mine, and nobody
[28:27] Speaker 7: gets it, not for a two hundred dollars bracelet.
[28:30] Speaker 2: They don't. What do you think I am? Anyhow, Let's
[28:33] Speaker 2: go for the bracelet? What good is that? What did
[28:35] Speaker 2: you need that for?
[28:37] Speaker 7: As if it were something. I'm a hard worker. Things
[28:42] Speaker 7: I own didn't come easy. What's going to happen to them?
[28:48] Speaker 2: Now?
[28:49] Speaker 7: Missus Clover, you better get in touch with mister Mago.
[28:53] Speaker 7: He don't know how to advise me. Well, he's just
[28:55] Speaker 7: like a big brother to me.
[29:19] Speaker 2: It's the journey to the end of all the other
[29:21] Speaker 2: streets in the world, this broadway. You turn a corner
[29:24] Speaker 2: and you're there. Walk it slowly, lean your heart against it,
[29:30] Speaker 2: shop for the kicks, the bargains, the heartbreak, until it
[29:34] Speaker 2: all explodes in your face. It's Broadway, the gaudiest, most violent,
[29:42] Speaker 2: the lonesomest mile in the world. Broadway My Beat.
[30:03] Speaker 3: Broadway's My Beat stars Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover,
[30:07] Speaker 3: with Charles calvernest Artaglia and Jack Krushian as Muggavin. The
[30:11] Speaker 3: program was produced and directed by Elliott Lewis, with musical
[30:14] Speaker 3: score composed and conducted by Alexander Courage. In tonight's story,
[30:18] Speaker 3: Howard mcneer was heard as Leo Compton. Featured in the
[30:21] Speaker 3: cast were Billy Hallop, Lou Krugman, Joe Forte, and Francis Cheney.
[30:28] Speaker 3: Two styles of music, both tops in popularity, are heard
[30:31] Speaker 3: every Sunday over most of these same CBS stations. Guy
[30:34] Speaker 3: Lombardo's Sweetest Music.
[30:36] Speaker 2: This Side of Heaven is one.
[30:37] Speaker 3: The others the singing style of Mario Lanza New vocal
[30:41] Speaker 3: sensation of the airwaves Enjoy God Lombardo and his Royal Canadians,
[30:45] Speaker 3: and the Mario Lanza Show Tomorrow Night Stay two Now
[30:49] Speaker 3: for Us Sing It Again, which follows immediately over most
[30:51] Speaker 3: of these same CBS stations.
[30:53] Speaker 9: Bill Anders speaking, This.
[30:55] Speaker 3: Is CBS where you meet Adventure with Charlie Wilde on
[30:58] Speaker 3: Sundays on the Columbia Broadcast.
[31:00] Speaker 9: System, Welcome back.
[31:15] Speaker 1: This one in the second half of the episode really
[31:18] Speaker 1: became much more of a character study than much of
[31:23] Speaker 1: a mystery, and the killer's own actions are what gave
[31:27] Speaker 1: him away. I mean, Tartaglia solve this, and I don't
[31:30] Speaker 1: say that in any way to disrespect, you know, but
[31:33] Speaker 1: that's not typically the thing he does. But pretty much
[31:36] Speaker 1: he's like, ohh let's just go ahead and call this here.
[31:41] Speaker 1: This is really really suspicious. And really after that it
[31:45] Speaker 1: was just kind of revealing the sort of person he
[31:51] Speaker 1: actually was that led him to taking the actions he did.
[31:56] Speaker 1: And of course Howard mcneer did a good job as always,
[32:00] Speaker 1: and I think it was an interesting episode. Is this
[32:03] Speaker 1: type of thing that's okay every once in a while,
[32:05] Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to see all the time. There was
[32:09] Speaker 1: one thing that kind of threw me a bit and
[32:13] Speaker 1: was a reminder that sometimes words might still say the
[32:18] Speaker 1: same things, but they don't mean the same things. Because
[32:21] Speaker 1: when the rescue mission guy said he had four donuts
[32:25] Speaker 1: and automatically that this was, like, what, because four of
[32:30] Speaker 1: donuts that I tend to eat when I eat donuts,
[32:34] Speaker 1: and I don't eat them very often anymore, but four
[32:38] Speaker 1: donuts that'll put you in a sugar coma, or at
[32:41] Speaker 1: least would be pretty close to it. But these were
[32:44] Speaker 1: not twenty first century donuts. These were nineteen fifties donuts,
[32:49] Speaker 1: which were quite a bit smaller, denser, and they were
[32:55] Speaker 1: not super sugary. Maybe a little bit of a lot
[33:00] Speaker 1: or some sugar dusting. Plus, these were donuts that he
[33:04] Speaker 1: got at the rescue mission now rescue missions, And I
[33:09] Speaker 1: believe this still goes on today. It certainly went on
[33:13] Speaker 1: while I was growing up because my maternal grandfather helped
[33:18] Speaker 1: collect food for a local rescue mission. He got day
[33:23] Speaker 1: old groceries and food items that could be shared with
[33:29] Speaker 1: these sort of ministries. So usually you'd be looking at
[33:33] Speaker 1: day old donuts. So essentially, a guy eating four donuts
[33:38] Speaker 1: at the rescue mission says, this is a guy who
[33:42] Speaker 1: a bit desperate, maybe a bit of a nervous eater.
[33:45] Speaker 1: It's not necessarily sort of pigging out sort of thing
[33:49] Speaker 1: like that might signal if you were dealing with modern donuts.
[33:53] Speaker 1: All right, listener comments and feedback now and we have
[33:57] Speaker 1: a comment over on you Tube. But regarding the Howard
[34:01] Speaker 1: Crawford murder case, Ryan Sir writes, I find it interesting
[34:06] Speaker 1: and funny how the announcer will not say Broadway's My Beat.
[34:09] Speaker 1: English teachers thought it was sacrilege to use apostrophes, so
[34:13] Speaker 1: in proper English, the title is Broadway is My Beat.
[34:17] Speaker 1: But that's three twenty not The show's title contractions were
[34:23] Speaker 1: frowned upon big time by the way, you sound the
[34:26] Speaker 1: same from Orlando as you do from Boise Well, thanks
[34:29] Speaker 1: so much. The whole question of what this series is called,
[34:34] Speaker 1: I talked about it way way back. I think it
[34:38] Speaker 1: was either the first or second episodes, so I'm not
[34:41] Speaker 1: going to rehash that because it's a lot. But even
[34:46] Speaker 1: when the series was airing, they couldn't really seem to
[34:51] Speaker 1: agree on what it should be called. In fact, different
[34:55] Speaker 1: newspaper listings would have the show as Broadway My Beat,
[35:02] Speaker 1: and other listings would have it as Broadway is My Beat.
[35:06] Speaker 1: It was thought the definitive answer was found when someone
[35:09] Speaker 1: found a script page at one of the writer's papers
[35:15] Speaker 1: and it had Broadways My Beat on it. But then
[35:19] Speaker 1: there were other scripts that had Broadway is My Beat. Now,
[35:24] Speaker 1: it used to me that the consensus in the old
[35:26] Speaker 1: time radio community was that the title of the series
[35:30] Speaker 1: is Broadway is My Beat. But the weight of evidence
[35:34] Speaker 1: has slightly tapped in the favor of Broadways My Beat,
[35:38] Speaker 1: and so that's what we go with. But it is
[35:41] Speaker 1: a fraud issue as to sounding the same in Orlando.
[35:45] Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear it, and for that, I really
[35:48] Speaker 1: am grateful for my microphone, which I've been through many
[35:54] Speaker 1: over the years. Right now, I'm using the A Labs
[35:57] Speaker 1: wireless and it's so good at not picking up stuff
[36:02] Speaker 1: other than me. I did have a few moments when
[36:05] Speaker 1: I was recording in Orlando because the hotel I was
[36:09] Speaker 1: staying at was right near the SeaWorld, just about half
[36:14] Speaker 1: a mile away, so it was a busy part of town,
[36:17] Speaker 1: and there would be these like little bursts of noise
[36:20] Speaker 1: while I was recording, and I would hear it, and
[36:23] Speaker 1: I stopped the recording check and I wouldn't make it
[36:27] Speaker 1: on the recording. And most of the stuff, even around
[36:30] Speaker 1: my house, it doesn't capture. And I check whenever I
[36:34] Speaker 1: think it might, and usually it doesn't. Although I have
[36:37] Speaker 1: been advised that my son has already made a cameo.
[36:42] Speaker 1: Someone heard him in the background and I didn't catch it.
[36:46] Speaker 1: And I believe my cat as well, but usually it
[36:49] Speaker 1: does just a great job filtering that out. All right. Well,
[36:53] Speaker 1: now it's time to think our Patreon supporter of the
[36:56] Speaker 1: day and I want to go ahead and thank elazare
[37:00] Speaker 1: on supporter since July twenty twenty one, currently supporting the

[37:28] Speaker 6: These regulary jobs Allan's supposed to be pulling?
[37:30] Speaker 11: Red?
[37:30] Speaker 6: Where's he working them?
[37:31] Speaker 9: Do you know?
[37:31] Speaker 2: Then?
[37:32] Speaker 7: Oh?
