[1:09] Speaker 1: release date is May the third of nineteen forty eight,
[1:15] Speaker 1: and the title is Cloak and Dagger.
[1:20] Speaker 2: Luck was in Hollywood Leader's other company, The Niators of

[1:53] Speaker 3: Using Hollywood Ladies and Gentlemen, one of the high points
[1:57] Speaker 3: of the most successful season in this theater, for the
[2:00] Speaker 3: presentation just two weeks ago of random hearts from the
[2:04] Speaker 3: novel by James Hilton.
[2:06] Speaker 4: Because we have received.
[2:08] Speaker 3: So many letters of thanks and commendations, we'd like to

[2:22] Speaker 3: of the wartime OSAs or Office of Strategic Services, that
[2:27] Speaker 3: gallant band of secret agents who operated under the descriptive
[2:31] Speaker 3: symbol of the cloak and dance, and our stars are
[2:35] Speaker 3: they often requested, Ronald Reagan and that new and captivating
[2:39] Speaker 3: personality Lilly Palmer, recreating our original screen role. Lilly Palmer.
[2:45] Speaker 3: Excellent stage performances are among my pleasant memories of London
[2:49] Speaker 3: during the otherwise grim months of war, when luxuries were
[2:53] Speaker 3: few and such a.
[2:54] Speaker 2: Thing as lux soap was a highly cherried treasure.
[2:58] Speaker 3: Little did I think that I'd be working with her
[3:00] Speaker 3: five years later in this theater, or.
[3:02] Speaker 2: That I'd be praising lucksow from this state.
[3:05] Speaker 3: But I can assure you I was very grateful even
[3:07] Speaker 3: then for every cake of luck and for the simple
[3:11] Speaker 3: luxury at office, just as I'm sure we're grateful now
[3:14] Speaker 3: to Luxo for helping us present Act one of Cloak
[3:18] Speaker 3: and Dagger, starring Ronald Reagan as Jesper and Linie.
[3:21] Speaker 5: Palmer as Gina, the girl of.
[3:24] Speaker 3: The Italian on the ground who tells our story.
[3:35] Speaker 4: We did not know in those early weeks of nineteen
[3:38] Speaker 4: forty five that in a few months it would all
[3:40] Speaker 4: be over, and Nat would surrender, mister Lee would be dead,
[3:45] Speaker 4: and the stunning silence of the pins would come again
[3:48] Speaker 4: to Italy. Les awarded me know that thousands of miles away,
[3:53] Speaker 4: and then little college town in the United States, our
[3:56] Speaker 4: destinies are being shaped by two men known even in
[3:59] Speaker 4: their own country, one of whom you could never see
[4:03] Speaker 4: in the other for whom some of us would tie.
[4:10] Speaker 5: Well the progesters.
[4:12] Speaker 2: High time I locked you up, Then you then claim
[4:15] Speaker 2: not since the alumni dinner is thirty nine. Yeah, hard
[4:18] Speaker 2: man to find, even if you're on a faculty. I've
[4:20] Speaker 2: been wondering whose sellers breaking down doors. It's a strange
[4:24] Speaker 2: place to have a laboratory. What are you hiding down here?
[4:26] Speaker 2: What are you hiding claim? I thought you were in
[4:28] Speaker 2: the army. I am why does the villian close? I'm
[4:30] Speaker 2: in the RS. Never heard of it. That haven't not
[4:33] Speaker 2: supported to get any for birthday. It's the Office of
[4:36] Speaker 2: Strategic Services. The colck and dagger was found Romantic. Oh sure,
[4:40] Speaker 2: very I thinks in nuclear physics. So Joe, it's ha
[4:46] Speaker 2: ha to government work. I know you're working on the
[4:48] Speaker 2: Manhattan Project. Now wait a minute you waiting? Yes, take
[4:51] Speaker 2: a look at this report? What is it? And then
[4:54] Speaker 2: my radio from one of our men in France as
[4:56] Speaker 2: the report isn't complete the book and shot him. Only
[4:58] Speaker 2: was sending it to tell us what the railroads are
[5:01] Speaker 2: paying in the Germany forty carloads of pitch Glynn, two
[5:06] Speaker 2: hundred and fifty carloads in thirty days. It's blend and
[5:09] Speaker 2: they've taken my entire out for the mona that in Norway. However,
[5:13] Speaker 2: I'm here because I had to get to someone past
[5:15] Speaker 2: who can give me some answers. Exclaims for uranium, monazart
[5:18] Speaker 2: for thorium and carload quantity's out for the laboratory. It's
[5:21] Speaker 2: a large scale operation. Thanks, they're working on Adam bomb too.
[5:25] Speaker 2: I've got the brain they know as much about nuclear
[5:27] Speaker 2: fission as we do. How they are working on us?
[5:29] Speaker 2: I see, you know, when I started this work, for
[5:34] Speaker 2: the first time in my life, I was sorry I
[5:36] Speaker 2: ever saw a laboratory. If anybody is going to develop
[5:39] Speaker 2: an Adam Bamber, he wanted to be us, not then
[5:41] Speaker 2: have much choice in that, Alvera. We've got to know
[5:44] Speaker 2: how far the Germans have gone. Also, our agents simply
[5:48] Speaker 2: are equipped. I don't know what to look for. The misincludes.
[5:51] Speaker 2: We've got to get more siders in our outfit. What
[5:54] Speaker 2: about what I'm doing here, I'm authorized to take you off.
[5:56] Speaker 2: You know the problem. You're single, you know languages. It
[5:59] Speaker 2: won't be along, but you've got to volunteer. Now, there
[6:02] Speaker 2: was a time when I thought I'd like to be
[6:04] Speaker 2: a secret agent. I gave it up at the age
[6:06] Speaker 2: of nine. But okay, brother, if they want me, oh,
[6:11] Speaker 2: I thought this along with photo that another woman. Of
[6:15] Speaker 2: course I know her. He's act the Katherine Loaders, one

[8:57] Speaker 2: Now the Germans are working on a tomic weapon. I'm
[9:00] Speaker 2: him too. It is un coordinated. Then what would happen
[9:03] Speaker 2: if your work helps them succeed?
[9:05] Speaker 6: What would happen if I stay here? I cannot leave

[13:05] Speaker 2: terribly vague, It says, dear third, I am only a
[13:08] Speaker 2: clerk in this bank, but I am a true friend
[13:10] Speaker 2: of Germany. And you should know that a woman named
[13:12] Speaker 2: Anne Dawson, presumably friendly to us, has recently deposited the
[13:16] Speaker 2: sum of five thousand American dollars. But that's the third.
[13:20] Speaker 2: He was accompanied by an American whom I had never

[13:36] Speaker 8: He was shot down, and he contended here, I'm an American.
[13:39] Speaker 2: Technically, yes, you were born and raised there. But in
[13:42] Speaker 2: nineteen thirty five, Messas Dawkon, you joined the Bund under
[13:44] Speaker 2: the name of Hilda Winters. In nineteen thirty seven, you
[13:47] Speaker 2: were arrested for organizing anti Semitican anti Negro riots. A
[13:50] Speaker 2: year later, you were in Berlin started to work for
[13:52] Speaker 2: the Gestapo. I you think they'll believe a flame up
[13:54] Speaker 2: like this, Yes they will. I'll be getting a phone
[13:58] Speaker 2: call any minute if you haven't told me what I want.
[14:00] Speaker 2: I know by them, the original of this letter will
[14:02] Speaker 2: be delivered. They'll laugh at it, but just to be safe,
[14:05] Speaker 2: they'll do some set You see, a woman who looks
[14:07] Speaker 2: exactly like you was in the bank today with me.
[14:10] Speaker 2: Her signature was an exact duplicate of your signature. And
[14:14] Speaker 2: they're just a chance. Your friends may have been worried
[14:16] Speaker 2: about you from time to time. Why they have a theory.
[14:19] Speaker 2: Once a German, always a German. It may apply to
[14:22] Speaker 2: Americans too. I've never betrayed them. No, I've never betrayed
[14:25] Speaker 2: them until an American agent offered your money. What is
[14:28] Speaker 2: it you want to know? I want to know where
[14:30] Speaker 2: they've taken Catherine Loaders. No, you tell me the letter
[14:34] Speaker 2: will be destroyed? What I tell you? If I you
[14:37] Speaker 2: but I doesn't know? Hello, Well, how did I tell
[14:42] Speaker 2: you if I don't know, He says, she doesn't know.
[14:45] Speaker 2: No way, hold on a second well at the eight
[14:52] Speaker 2: of life or is that up the mountain road from
[14:56] Speaker 2: the village of Morehaut. It's closed out. DAWs can changed

[15:36] Speaker 2: They can't make any use of them now in the
[15:39] Speaker 2: whole world. It will perhaps ten people with a mind
[15:41] Speaker 2: equal to have heard the work she could have done.
[15:44] Speaker 2: We'll be able to go home now anytime you want.
[15:47] Speaker 2: You came to Switzerland for another I'm not going home.
[15:51] Speaker 2: Why Adam Lorder told me she'd be working with an
[15:54] Speaker 2: Italian Giovanni Polder. That's just I don't know. Maybe they're
[15:57] Speaker 2: ports them to work for them, just the way they
[15:58] Speaker 2: did with her. Maybe I can find out. Oh, never
[16:02] Speaker 2: meet him no, but I corresponded with him before the war,
[16:05] Speaker 2: which friendly then then doesn't mean a thing. I want
[16:08] Speaker 2: to go to Italy. Get in touch with the war.
[16:10] Speaker 2: Tell walk I want to go to Italy.

[59:03] Speaker 2: All the most of these six This is CBS A,
[59:08] Speaker 2: n x AM and FM Los Angeles twenty five seconds
[59:13] Speaker 2: before seven pm the Ulva Bulliver watch time.
[59:17] Speaker 1: Welcome Back Well. An interesting film and in some ways
[59:22] Speaker 1: a bit of a softer take on the OSS than
[59:26] Speaker 1: we've gotten either from the Kloakndagger series or certainly from
[59:32] Speaker 1: the two other film adaptations, with a very strong romantic feel.
[59:38] Speaker 1: Think back to OSS and it's a very different tone
[59:43] Speaker 1: than what you heard in that film adaptation. And this
[59:48] Speaker 1: was enhanced further by the ending monologue, which I think
[59:52] Speaker 1: was beautifully delivered by Reagan. The monologue not only featured
[59:57] Speaker 1: a happy ending and a reuni of our leading man
[1:00:02] Speaker 1: and lady but also paid tribute to the Italian people
[1:00:07] Speaker 1: emerging from under the boot of fascism and their resilience
[1:00:13] Speaker 1: and strength as a people on full display. This is
[1:00:19] Speaker 1: entirely original to the radio program. The film ends with
[1:00:26] Speaker 1: Alva flying away and a dirty faced Gina looking on
[1:00:32] Speaker 1: as he flies off into the distance, with no clue
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: as to what would happen next. Now to say that
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: it's different is not to say that it's bad. I
[1:00:43] Speaker 1: think it was actually quite enjoyable. You don't really get
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: much higher stakes than the Nazis trying to develop nuclear weapons,
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: plenty of action and adventure. I think Reagan did a
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: really good job in this, playing his character with a
[1:00:59] Speaker 1: lot of charm and decency. I think makes a good
[1:01:02] Speaker 1: substitute here for Gary Cooper. Lily Palmer does fine, although
[1:01:07] Speaker 1: as she said, she hadn't done as much radio and
[1:01:11] Speaker 1: that shows maybe in a few scenes. And beyond that,
[1:01:15] Speaker 1: they're supported by a strong cast of radio regulars. And
[1:01:22] Speaker 1: one thing that makes Locks work so well when it
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: comes to adapting films is that they can put together
[1:01:30] Speaker 1: the type of casts that are necessary to make a
[1:01:34] Speaker 1: big film feel really epic, and having those extra actors
[1:01:39] Speaker 1: does make a difference versus so many radio dramas which
[1:01:43] Speaker 1: tended to be limited to say, six or seven performers total.
[1:01:48] Speaker 1: I did find the closing conversation about cricket amusing I'm
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: a baseball fan and I'm curious about cricket, but any
[1:02:00] Speaker 1: time I try to understand it quickly get as lost
[1:02:06] Speaker 1: as Reagan did here. And of course Reagan would know
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: about it, as his whole career began with being a
[1:02:14] Speaker 1: baseball announcer Radio Craigett. That's a challenge for comments and
[1:02:21] Speaker 1: feedback now, and we have a few comments regarding the
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: adaptation of OSS and we start on Patreon, where Emmitt writes,
[1:02:32] Speaker 1: this was a good one, Adam. I've offered wondered why
[1:02:36] Speaker 1: it is that so many movies even today involved Nazis,
[1:02:40] Speaker 1: and it's pretty easy to figure out they are the
[1:02:42] Speaker 1: ultimate bad guys. In this excellent adaptation for Lux Radio Theater,
[1:02:48] Speaker 1: you just know we're going to see that Nazi again.
[1:02:51] Speaker 1: But I wasn't ready for how that would play out.
[1:02:54] Speaker 1: Thanks for this one, Jeff Wrights. Doesn't get much better
[1:02:58] Speaker 1: than Alan Ladd Veronica pairing. Very emotional and heartbreaking. Thanks
[1:03:04] Speaker 1: so much, Jeff. And then we turn over to spotify
[1:03:09] Speaker 1: Doctor who Doneant wrote amadea sprink taking bribes. His cousin
[1:03:14] Speaker 1: is his is a courier. His other cousin has a radio.
[1:03:18] Speaker 1: Is this an early version of pagan Zelschmidt. Well, that's
[1:03:22] Speaker 1: a fair question. I would point out that Oss the
[1:03:26] Speaker 1: film was released in nineteen forty six. The Man Called
[1:03:30] Speaker 1: X premiered in nineteen forty four, so if anyone was
[1:03:35] Speaker 1: borrowing from anyone, OSS may have been inspired by pagon
[1:03:40] Speaker 1: zel Schmidt on The Man Called X. But that said
[1:03:44] Speaker 1: trickster rogues like these characters certainly existed before either The
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: Man Called X or OSS and Mechanics sixty six rites.
[1:03:56] Speaker 1: Vernal Ronica Lank was the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit and
[1:04:01] Speaker 1: a reference to who Framed Roger Rabbit and Kim Masinger
[1:04:07] Speaker 1: played a Veronica Lake lookalike in La Confidential. Her charms
[1:04:12] Speaker 1: don't translate well over radio. Well, thank you so much,
[1:04:16] Speaker 1: appreciate your commenting and that additional insight. Well, now it
[1:04:21] Speaker 1: is time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day,
[1:04:25] Speaker 1: and I want to go ahead and thank Bettina, Patreon
[1:04:28] Speaker 1: supporter since May of twenty twenty one, currently supporting the
[1:04:34] Speaker 1: podcast at the first mate level of seven dollars and
