[2:18] Speaker 1: today's episode of Richard Diamond. The rebroadcast date on this
[2:24] Speaker 1: was August the sixteenth of nineteen fifty three, and it
[2:29] Speaker 1: originally aired September twenty seventh of nineteen fifty and this
[2:34] Speaker 1: one is the Hatpin murder case.
[2:43] Speaker 2: Bring Good Diamond, Private Detective starring Dick hall Mark. Me,
[3:04] Speaker 2: you know where I might find mister Richard Diamond? Do
[3:07] Speaker 2: you want to hire him? Yeah, we'll stop being sebastial friends,
[3:10] Speaker 2: Come in, Come in, you're mister Diamond. Well, any resemblance
[3:15] Speaker 2: to the Irish warsawoman is pretty intentional. You always do
[3:18] Speaker 2: your own laundry.
[3:19] Speaker 3: Always keeps my petty cash from looking through petty sit down.
[3:23] Speaker 3: Mister Baxter Clay.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Baxter promote Mouldy, Oklahoma, Clay backster from Oak Mulgy, Oklahoma
[3:30] Speaker 2: with a man I guess to be in his early
[3:31] Speaker 2: fifties straight up. He crowded six foot three, counting the
[3:34] Speaker 2: two inch heels on his handmade boots. Looking at him,
[3:37] Speaker 2: I thought of an old Remington Trent, and suddenly he
[3:39] Speaker 2: felt like singing a course of home on the reins.
[3:42] Speaker 2: I'd like you to come to Oak Moggy with me,
[3:44] Speaker 2: mister Diamond, Hi, mister Baxter. My brother was killed yesterday.
[3:47] Speaker 2: The sheriff of the corner said it was nax. Then
[3:49] Speaker 2: I don't believe it.
[3:50] Speaker 3: How did you happen to look me up?
[3:51] Speaker 2: I raise cattle, mister Diamond. I do a great deal
[3:54] Speaker 2: of beneics in Chicago and New York. I wanted a
[3:56] Speaker 2: detective with experience, someone with a good reputation, bless you.
[4:00] Speaker 2: I called a friend on Wall Street and he recommended
[4:02] Speaker 2: several men. One of them was you. I checked your background.
[4:04] Speaker 2: I'm satisfied.
[4:05] Speaker 3: Oh good. I charge one hundred a day in expensive
[4:08] Speaker 3: chicken feed.
[4:09] Speaker 2: I'll pay it, and if you catch the man who
[4:10] Speaker 2: done it, I'll give you one thousand dollars bonus.
[4:13] Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know.
[4:14] Speaker 2: I can't leave right away. It'll take me at least
[4:16] Speaker 2: five minutes to get my affairs in order. Ah, I
[4:21] Speaker 2: can certainly see you appreciate a book, mister Baxtill, I
[4:25] Speaker 2: appreciate a book like a textan appreciates Texas, Texas, never
[4:30] Speaker 2: heard of it. How was your brother supposed to have
[4:32] Speaker 2: been killed? Thrown from his horse skull fracture?
[4:35] Speaker 3: And you don't believe it?
[4:36] Speaker 2: I do not fly to good to horsemen. It could
[4:39] Speaker 2: have happened of a dad. He'd had taken the fall right,
[4:41] Speaker 2: might have busted something, but wouldn't have killed him anything else.
[4:44] Speaker 2: His wife, My brother was a wealthy man, mister Diamond.
[4:47] Speaker 2: His wife will inherit everything, ranch, cattle, all worth about
[4:51] Speaker 2: eight or ten minutes.
[4:52] Speaker 3: You think she had something to do with his death?
[4:54] Speaker 2: You tell me, mister Diamond. I called Helen Rippers off
[5:00] Speaker 2: to Oak Mulgi, promised I'd send her a couple of
[5:02] Speaker 2: navajoes or whatever they had out there. Then I took
[5:05] Speaker 2: Clay Baxter over to my flat and threw a few
[5:07] Speaker 2: things into a suitcase. Oklahoma's dry, so is Richard Diamond
[5:16] Speaker 2: might get arrested. I don't want to leave it here.
[5:19] Speaker 2: Wouldn't make any difference if it was empty. Word No,
[5:23] Speaker 2: got a couple of glasses. The fifth usually adds up
[5:27] Speaker 2: to a full evening, but that's only when Clay Baxter
[5:29] Speaker 2: isn't around. When he poured one for the road, the
[5:32] Speaker 2: water line receded six inches. I had a quick one
[5:35] Speaker 2: and he finished it. Yeah, how that soldier?
[5:40] Speaker 3: How do you feel, oh Lively, why don't we forget
[5:43] Speaker 3: the plane? You just started running for the window and
[5:46] Speaker 3: I'll climb on.
[5:52] Speaker 2: Oak Mulgi, Oklahoma, population seventeen thousand, ninety one according to
[5:56] Speaker 2: the last census. In very hot in August. Back to station.
[5:59] Speaker 3: Wagon was waiting at the airport, and the driver took
[6:01] Speaker 3: us into.
[6:02] Speaker 2: Town, where I was introduced to the local law. Here,
[6:05] Speaker 2: Sheriff Billings, are your cheff him? This mister Diamond? He's
[6:08] Speaker 2: a private detective from New York? How did Diamond? How
[6:11] Speaker 2: do they? Private detective who I've been called other things?
[6:15] Speaker 2: Still ain't satisfied, eh, Clay, not yet. You ain't either,
[6:19] Speaker 2: And you know it, Jim, how about it, Sheriff, you
[6:22] Speaker 2: think mister Baxter's brother was killed deliberty?
[6:24] Speaker 3: Carna says it was an accident, hit his head on
[6:27] Speaker 3: a rock.
[6:27] Speaker 2: That ain't what mister Diamond asked, Oh, Will Baxter was
[6:31] Speaker 2: a pretty good ride up, but he could have been thrown.
[6:34] Speaker 2: All the evidence says he was could see plane where
[6:37] Speaker 2: his horse boulted. What could have made his horse shy?
[6:40] Speaker 3: Snake?
[6:40] Speaker 2: Maybe not that horse. And you know what, jim Oh,
[6:44] Speaker 2: maybe stepped in a truck hole. He was limping right
[6:47] Speaker 2: bad when he got back to the barn.
[6:48] Speaker 3: No signs of anyone else near the body.
[6:50] Speaker 2: When I got there, I'm of Will's boys had already
[6:53] Speaker 2: ridden out. Who found him a couple old miners, Luke
[6:56] Speaker 2: and Phineas Merriweather. Well, let's go out to the ranch,
[6:59] Speaker 2: mister Baxter. Take another look at the spot where your
[7:01] Speaker 2: brother died.
[7:02] Speaker 3: Will Baxter's ranch is forty miles from him.
[7:04] Speaker 2: Mister Diamond, maybe you'd like to go out to my
[7:06] Speaker 2: place and freshen up a bit. First, you go ahead
[7:13] Speaker 2: and shave and shower. I'm gonna go build me a drink.
[7:16] Speaker 2: This is quite a place, mister Baxter. Glad you like it.
[7:18] Speaker 2: Take us away from the pool if you'd want, but
[7:20] Speaker 2: watch out for the catfish. Catfish. Like I'm a bachelor,
[7:23] Speaker 2: don't use the pool much, and I don't usually have
[7:25] Speaker 2: guests love catfish for dinner, so I keep from in
[7:28] Speaker 2: the pool.
[7:29] Speaker 3: I caught a guy who once floating bodies in his bathtub.
[7:32] Speaker 2: Don't say funny, are we? I showered and shaved and
[7:39] Speaker 2: met Baxter out by the pool where he was feeding
[7:41] Speaker 2: his catfish.
[7:42] Speaker 3: I watched a pond of liver disappear, like leaching nuts
[7:44] Speaker 3: in the.
[7:44] Speaker 2: Tongue war, and we all headed back to town, where
[7:47] Speaker 2: we picked up Shriff Billings. Forty miles later, we pulled
[7:50] Speaker 2: up in front of the late Will Baxter's ranch. A
[7:53] Speaker 2: little different architecture, but just as impressive as my clients. Okay,
[8:08] Speaker 2: afternoon's Oh well, well, well no, this here's mister Richard Diamond. Well,
[8:13] Speaker 2: my Baxter, my brother's wife. How do you do?
[8:15] Speaker 4: How do you do, mister Diamond.
[8:17] Speaker 3: Private detective come up from New York?
[8:20] Speaker 4: Oh well, why don't we all go in the house.
[8:23] Speaker 4: It's too hot out here.
[8:24] Speaker 2: Mister Diamond wants to go out and look at the
[8:26] Speaker 2: spot where Will got himself killed.
[8:28] Speaker 4: Certainly, have one of the boys fixed you up with
[8:31] Speaker 4: some horses. When you're done, why not stop back for dinner.
[8:34] Speaker 2: Mister Diamond's eating with me, and he's going to be
[8:36] Speaker 2: pretty busy for a while. Now.
[8:38] Speaker 4: I give you a rain check.
[8:39] Speaker 3: Mister Diamonds, Oh thank you.
[8:40] Speaker 4: I'd like you to tell me about New York. It's
[8:42] Speaker 4: been a long time, and I've almost forgotten what it's like.
[8:44] Speaker 2: Let's go gym. It's getting late by mister Diamonds.
[8:47] Speaker 4: Nice meeting.
[8:48] Speaker 3: Good Brimus is back there.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Seems all broken up, don't you? Yeah? Where was she
[8:55] Speaker 2: and her husband got killed?
[8:56] Speaker 3: Privy Gallibi in town all day? A lot of people
[8:59] Speaker 3: saw her.
[9:00] Speaker 2: Mighty, fine looking woman, mighty. We all rode down to
[9:08] Speaker 2: the stables, and one of the hands saddled of three horses.
[9:10] Speaker 3: We started out across the open desert.
[9:12] Speaker 2: For a man who had spent all his life riding
[9:14] Speaker 2: around in taxi cabs.
[9:16] Speaker 3: The experience was just short of agonizing. Just up ahead, Diamonds.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Well, never rode much, did you, No?
[9:24] Speaker 3: I always bounced like this. I'd like to make my
[9:26] Speaker 3: money felt jingle. Hell here it is?
[9:28] Speaker 2: Whoa yeah, whoa?
[9:36] Speaker 3: Oh well he is where it found the body?
[9:39] Speaker 2: Oh h Where did he hit his head on that
[9:42] Speaker 2: rock right there? Did you take an impression of the wound?
[9:46] Speaker 2: Receive it matched?
[9:46] Speaker 3: Yep o? Why not? Never thought about it? Oh, that's
[9:49] Speaker 3: a pretty good reason.
[9:51] Speaker 2: Anyway. Let's dig the rock out and take it back
[9:53] Speaker 2: with us. I spent the next minutes lembing around looking
[9:59] Speaker 2: for something and came up with nothing except the longing
[10:01] Speaker 2: for the hot epsom sauce bath. We dug up the
[10:04] Speaker 2: large rock and took it back with us to weld
[10:06] Speaker 2: the Baxter's French. Oh oh oh, he sure had he Frank.
[10:18] Speaker 2: This here is mister Diamond, Frank Diamond. This is Frank Kelly,
[10:22] Speaker 2: the ranch foreman. Howdy detective fella huh and his backer
[10:25] Speaker 2: told me about you said you're doing some investigating, Yes, sir,
[10:29] Speaker 2: scientific investigation the way the city boys do it.
[10:33] Speaker 3: What you're going to do with that raw in the hopscotch?
[10:36] Speaker 2: Oh?
[10:37] Speaker 3: On second thought, I think we'll take turns on telling
[10:39] Speaker 3: the knots in my back.
[10:40] Speaker 2: Good warm shower. He'll fit as a fiddle. I got
[10:43] Speaker 2: a good start. I'm shaped like one. You'll find it
[10:46] Speaker 2: a little bit rough out here, don oh, I'll get
[10:48] Speaker 2: used to it, mister Kelly.
[10:49] Speaker 3: I hope you're right. Ain't much like the big city. Uh?
[10:53] Speaker 3: Just what is the big city like, mister Kelly. I
[10:55] Speaker 3: ain't never been there.
[10:56] Speaker 2: Just what I've noticed, looks like a man can get
[10:59] Speaker 2: pretty living in the city. I'd like to show you
[11:03] Speaker 2: where I was brought up sometime, mister Kelly, We never
[11:05] Speaker 2: got around to playing cowboy though. We were too busy
[11:08] Speaker 2: kicking each other's teeth out. See you later, mister Baxter,
[11:12] Speaker 2: I don't care. I don't think Frank likes you. Diamond.
[11:20] Speaker 3: What about well Baxter's horse.
[11:21] Speaker 2: I take a look at him right over there in
[11:23] Speaker 2: that stall, really pulled up lane. A good horse, never
[11:27] Speaker 2: figured to shy at anything. Man, Look at that his
[11:33] Speaker 2: hip swollen? He really twisted something steady.
[11:42] Speaker 3: Hey, that looks like an infection. Yeah, it's a funny thing,
[11:45] Speaker 3: it kind of does.
[11:46] Speaker 2: Where are you getting at, mister Diamond. Oh I'm not
[11:49] Speaker 2: getting into thing, mister Baxter. I just said it looked
[11:51] Speaker 2: like an infection. Yeah, we're better. Tell missus Baxter of Frank,
[11:54] Speaker 2: and someone take care of it. Tell me, boys, if
[11:57] Speaker 2: you jabbed a horse for something, would that make him bolt?
[12:01] Speaker 2: Come on, I want to get back to town and
[12:02] Speaker 2: talk of the coroner. I'm look here, Jimmy, my word
[12:07] Speaker 2: good enough?
[12:08] Speaker 5: Why?
[12:08] Speaker 3: Sure it is corner.
[12:09] Speaker 2: But Clay hired mister Diamond to do some investigating, and
[12:12] Speaker 2: he's doing it. Clay, tell you your brother died from
[12:15] Speaker 2: natural calls. I don't think, but if you insist, I'll
[12:18] Speaker 2: show this detective fellow the body. I want the head
[12:20] Speaker 2: wound mats of this rocket, okay, but the march here,
[12:23] Speaker 2: he ain't gonna like it.
[12:24] Speaker 3: They got him all ready to bury.
[12:27] Speaker 2: The corner led me across the street and then to
[12:29] Speaker 2: a funeral parlor, where I took a look at the
[12:30] Speaker 2: late well backstair. Six years of the fifth percent homicide
[12:34] Speaker 2: and a couple of dozen killings should have conditioned me.
[12:38] Speaker 2: But like always, the first look shakes something loose in
[12:40] Speaker 2: the middle of my stomach. I have to keep swallowing.
[12:42] Speaker 2: Hide looks right, natural, don'ty clay? Yeah, they do a
[12:47] Speaker 2: good job here, and bully for them. And he hit
[12:50] Speaker 2: his head right. Here's a concussion, plain and simple. No
[12:54] Speaker 2: other marks or Bruce's no will. The coroner rolled the
[12:58] Speaker 2: late Will Baxter and of the back rooms and made
[13:01] Speaker 2: a comparison with the head wound and the rock we'd
[13:02] Speaker 2: brought him the ranch. We went out on the front
[13:05] Speaker 2: porch for some air. I lit a cigarette and thought
[13:07] Speaker 2: about an old case I'd worked on five or six
[13:10] Speaker 2: years before.
[13:14] Speaker 3: You got a cigarette.
[13:15] Speaker 2: Sure do figure, all right, m Anything head wound doesn't
[13:23] Speaker 2: match the rock, Sure doesn't. Wound is too deep, rocks
[13:27] Speaker 2: round flant nothing sticking up to go that deep, and
[13:31] Speaker 2: I want an autopsy. Why fractice still killed him?
[13:34] Speaker 3: I doubt it.
[13:35] Speaker 2: When someone plans a murder, they don't count on one
[13:37] Speaker 2: blow to do the trick. Bet there's nothing else that
[13:40] Speaker 2: could have done it.
[13:41] Speaker 3: Nothing you can see.
[13:43] Speaker 2: I've met someone here in Oakamulogy that I'm pretty sure
[13:46] Speaker 2: is wanted for another killing very similar to this.
[13:49] Speaker 3: Now, Doc, go make that autopsy and fast.
[13:55] Speaker 2: I think maybe you've found something. Diamond. You think Will
[13:58] Speaker 2: was killed liberately, But we'll have to wait for the autopsy.
[14:02] Speaker 2: In the meantime, I like to go out and visit
[14:04] Speaker 2: those two old timers, un Phineus.
[14:06] Speaker 3: That's right, Seruff, Well my dangerous come on, I'll take
[14:10] Speaker 3: you out.
[14:11] Speaker 2: You better wait here for the report. Mister Baxter, are
[14:14] Speaker 2: going out all right? You can use my horses so
[14:16] Speaker 2: you won't have to go all the way back to
[14:17] Speaker 2: ranch horses with the Merriweathers on the other side of town.
[14:20] Speaker 2: Not about ten miles, no roads, oh horses ten miles?
[14:25] Speaker 2: I mean, never played kick the can again? Oh you
[14:38] Speaker 2: really don't take the horses? Do your diamond? Maybe if
[14:40] Speaker 2: you could find me a nice long, thin one holy ike,
[14:44] Speaker 2: whoa ho, stay, that's one of the Merryweathers.
[14:46] Speaker 3: Let's get out of here. Come on, horse, now, come on,
[14:49] Speaker 3: I'm yellow and I admitted.
[14:50] Speaker 2: It's okay, Diamond. That's just the boy's way of letting,
[14:53] Speaker 2: you know, not come any farther unless they say so.
[14:55] Speaker 3: Swelled gratings. What happens?
[14:56] Speaker 2: Now? Hey up there, loo.
[15:01] Speaker 3: Are you are?
[15:02] Speaker 2: It's clay Boxer. I got a friend here once talk
[15:05] Speaker 2: to here? Tie yeah up?
[15:09] Speaker 3: Hey, back at him? Fred, who wants to plabor?
[15:13] Speaker 2: I don't feel like clabor. Better shoot giddy after just
[15:17] Speaker 2: take it easy, take it.
[15:18] Speaker 3: They always act like this.
[15:20] Speaker 2: And you don't want it.
[15:21] Speaker 3: Bab, I gotta shoot you jump fromoose. It's important by
[15:27] Speaker 3: my brother.
[15:28] Speaker 2: Tie yeahop spout his brother.
[15:33] Speaker 3: Get taken me pound to other day? Oh all right,
[15:38] Speaker 3: I guess.
[15:39] Speaker 2: That's one of them. Timber packed yello. Can't your pen on?
[15:47] Speaker 2: And up I went, leaving my better judgment, running off
[15:49] Speaker 2: across the desert. I climbed a small hill and found
[15:52] Speaker 2: myself standing at the entrance of an old mine shaft.
[15:55] Speaker 2: Little continuous and Merriweather stood on either side, shotguns ready
[15:59] Speaker 2: pointed right in my chest. Start talking, well, gentlemen, my
[16:04] Speaker 2: name is diamond, don't paint.
[16:05] Speaker 3: Nor import to names.
[16:06] Speaker 5: Sure do you want?
[16:07] Speaker 2: I just wanted to ask some questions about the man
[16:10] Speaker 2: you found the other day. You're polishman, well kind of
[16:14] Speaker 2: shoot him? Oh now now now, wait a minute. I'm
[16:16] Speaker 2: not a real policeman, then what are you? I'm a
[16:19] Speaker 2: I'm a private detective. Yeah, what's the matter. It's an
[16:25] Speaker 2: honest profession. Fella's got to make a living.
[16:28] Speaker 4: You are real live, private detecative.
[16:31] Speaker 3: Well, I'm a private detective. For the real live part,
[16:34] Speaker 3: I'm depending on where my goodness, gracious, try me have
[16:37] Speaker 3: some viddles. Huh why mister? Me and Finney read all
[16:42] Speaker 3: them stories about you fellas. We filled up one whole
[16:45] Speaker 3: tunnel with old detecative magazines. You fellas really are suky.
[16:50] Speaker 3: Great a minute, what's wrong? Let's your badge?
[16:55] Speaker 2: Oh?
[16:55] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sure?
[16:56] Speaker 2: Sure?
[16:58] Speaker 6: Hey, oh yes, well loud but dum come on in, friend,
[17:05] Speaker 6: come on, and I'd like to ask you some questions
[17:09] Speaker 6: about this here, Dick, Tracy Philip.
[17:16] Speaker 2: Well, one minute I'd faced two shotguns, the next I
[17:19] Speaker 2: was turned into an added guest. I had coffee and
[17:21] Speaker 2: biscuits with Luke and Phineas, and I answered enough questions
[17:24] Speaker 2: about the private detective business to fill a.
[17:26] Speaker 3: Diamon novel of my own.
[17:28] Speaker 2: I squeezed in enough questions to find out that the
[17:30] Speaker 2: boys hadn't seen or found anything unusual when they discovered
[17:33] Speaker 2: Well Baxter's body. Four cups of coffee and a dozen
[17:36] Speaker 2: biscuits later, I bid the Merriweathers a fan farewell and
[17:40] Speaker 2: returned to Clay baxxter. They love you, oh, worship me
[17:45] Speaker 2: starting a rich a diamond fans club. Or did you
[17:47] Speaker 2: find out anything? No, give me your hand, I'll be
[17:51] Speaker 2: up on your horse.
[17:52] Speaker 3: Couldn't I just walk back? Come on a horse whole
[17:56] Speaker 3: still steady boy?
[18:01] Speaker 2: Clay Baxter sitting in the saddle and leaned down, grabbed
[18:04] Speaker 2: my hand to help me up on my horse.
[18:05] Speaker 3: And that was when he got it. His horse took out,
[18:07] Speaker 3: with the wounded man still up and hanging on. Ivoted
[18:10] Speaker 3: my horse in the ribs.
[18:12] Speaker 2: Oh.
[18:15] Speaker 3: I took off after Baxter like citation on a good day.
[18:18] Speaker 2: I closed my eyes, prayed a little, and tried to
[18:20] Speaker 2: remember every jockey I'd ever seen before. Suddenly I looked
[18:23] Speaker 2: up and spotted Baxter's horse dead ahead, standing still and
[18:26] Speaker 2: right my path. Whoa woo oh, I guess it's just
[18:33] Speaker 2: my time. If I don't die from this bullet I
[18:36] Speaker 2: got in there, I'm gonna do it from laughing. How
[18:54] Speaker 2: is he? Doctor?
[18:55] Speaker 3: Bullian?
[18:55] Speaker 2: Me? All right?
[18:56] Speaker 3: Connor boom in breaking and you for MITCHR. Diamond crippled?
[19:02] Speaker 3: Any idea who shot Clay? No?
[19:05] Speaker 2: Clay said he thought it might have been the merry
[19:07] Speaker 2: with her boy. Ah, I know it couldn't have been.
[19:10] Speaker 2: Why not the mayor were the boys who shotguns, not rifles?
[19:14] Speaker 2: What about that autopsy?
[19:15] Speaker 3: Doc?
[19:16] Speaker 2: Well, come on, what about it?
[19:18] Speaker 4: You is right?
[19:20] Speaker 3: Will Baster didn't die from a skull factory?
[19:22] Speaker 2: Oh what was it?
[19:23] Speaker 3: You don't know what was used? For sure, long thin instrument?
[19:28] Speaker 3: Whoever did it?
[19:28] Speaker 2: Pulled the lower eyelid down, killed Will Baxer, but dab
[19:31] Speaker 2: him something through the eye into his brain, probably hit
[19:34] Speaker 2: him over the head to knock him off the horse,
[19:36] Speaker 2: and then got down and made sure and.
[19:38] Speaker 3: Then jabbed his horse in the flank. Did I get them?
[19:40] Speaker 2: Bald?
[19:41] Speaker 3: Shy way of killing me? That's been done before.
[19:44] Speaker 2: Not a man's way of killing Wilma Baxter was in
[19:48] Speaker 2: town all day when Clay comes around, telling him I
[19:51] Speaker 2: borrowed the station wagon going out to see Wilma going
[19:54] Speaker 2: out to a ranch. I want to take another look
[19:57] Speaker 2: at will Baxter's lame horse, and Doc, I want to
[20:01] Speaker 2: borrow a pair of surgical probes. I climbed into the
[20:08] Speaker 2: station wagon close to an hour later, full up on
[20:11] Speaker 2: the side of the road. The gate to the ranch
[20:14] Speaker 2: house was another one hundred yards up ahead, so I
[20:17] Speaker 2: piled out, climbed the tall white fence, and slipped into
[20:20] Speaker 2: the barn. Steady, fella, Steady, steady. The horse's left flank
[20:28] Speaker 2: were still swollen, very close to serious infection. I ran
[20:31] Speaker 2: my hand over the spot, Steady boy, there was something
[20:36] Speaker 2: still stuck in the flesh. So I used the surgical
[20:39] Speaker 2: probes and prayed the horse wouldn't kicked my brains out.
[20:41] Speaker 7: Oh, oh, steady boy, steady, Sorry fella, I didn't know
[20:55] Speaker 7: you were a bet, mister Damon.
[20:57] Speaker 3: Huh, oh, good evening, missus.
[20:59] Speaker 4: Baxtain part of the country. You can get shot for
[21:01] Speaker 4: horse stealing.
[21:02] Speaker 2: Or not stealing.
[21:03] Speaker 3: Just taking this out of your horse's flank.
[21:06] Speaker 2: What is it?
[21:06] Speaker 3: That's a piece of a long needle. It might be
[21:08] Speaker 3: a hatpin or something.
[21:10] Speaker 4: I think you'd better tell me what this is all about.
[21:12] Speaker 3: Oh, certainly your uh your husband was murdered. That's impossible
[21:17] Speaker 3: shoot yourself.
[21:18] Speaker 2: But he was. Somebody hit him over the head and
[21:20] Speaker 2: knocked him from his horse, jabbed this needle into his eye,
[21:23] Speaker 2: then jabbed it into the horse's flank so the horse
[21:25] Speaker 2: would pull up. Lame looked like it shied. The killer
[21:28] Speaker 2: tried to shoot me this evening, but he missed it
[21:29] Speaker 2: and got Clay Baxter instead.
[21:31] Speaker 4: Who do you think did this?
[21:32] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[21:34] Speaker 2: The method doesn't fit a man a woman. Then, well
[21:37] Speaker 2: the blow on the back of the head rules out
[21:39] Speaker 2: a woman too much force. What have you got left?
[21:43] Speaker 2: What I started with? A man and a woman.
[21:47] Speaker 4: Very interesting theory.
[21:50] Speaker 3: You're from New York, aren't you. I've been there, I thought,
[21:53] Speaker 3: so all your face is familiar.
[21:55] Speaker 4: I haven't been in New York and at least ten years,
[21:56] Speaker 4: mister Diamond.
[21:57] Speaker 3: Oh funny. Well, I've got to go out to the Merriweathers.
[22:01] Speaker 4: Those two miners who found my husband.
[22:03] Speaker 2: Mm hmmm, they saw the murderer. What yeah, that's why
[22:07] Speaker 2: I know how it was done. I was out there earlier,
[22:10] Speaker 2: and I've got to go back. After a soren statement.
[22:13] Speaker 4: Why didn't they speak up before this?
[22:15] Speaker 3: Afraid said there was none of the business. See lay
[22:18] Speaker 3: the missus Baxter. He another biscuit inspected.
[22:32] Speaker 2: No thanks, fellas tens plenty, you are so we're we're
[22:35] Speaker 2: back to re murdered her. That's right, And missus Baxter
[22:39] Speaker 2: thinks you two saw who did the killing. Gonna lay
[22:41] Speaker 2: a trap, yes, Luke, gonna lay it trap. Now. Look.
[22:45] Speaker 2: I remembered missus Baxter from someplace the first time I
[22:48] Speaker 2: saw her. Then, when I found out how the murder
[22:50] Speaker 2: was committed, I recalled a case very similar back in
[22:52] Speaker 2: New York. Man was hit over the head, pushed down
[22:55] Speaker 2: the flight of stairs, and his brain pierced by a
[22:57] Speaker 2: hat pin.
[22:58] Speaker 3: A man actually did it, but a woman planned it.
[23:00] Speaker 3: The man was caught, but a woman disappeared. Why they
[23:05] Speaker 3: do it?
[23:06] Speaker 2: The victim was in short, They wanted to make it
[23:07] Speaker 2: look like an accident. Come on, we better spread out.
[23:11] Speaker 2: We should have comp me pretty soon. The two old
[23:16] Speaker 2: timers took off the coats and gave me some beat
[23:18] Speaker 2: up pants, which I stuffed with pillows and blankets.
[23:21] Speaker 3: In five minutes flat, I had two dummies sitting with
[23:23] Speaker 3: me at the little table. I think they're fault pretty
[23:27] Speaker 3: you can't tell, but you two go.
[23:29] Speaker 2: On outside and wait until somebody comes in. I just
[23:32] Speaker 2: want him to try for one of the dummies.
[23:34] Speaker 3: Well, Roger, if he tries.
[23:35] Speaker 2: For you, kill joy. Luke and Phineas took their place
[23:42] Speaker 2: outside the mine and I smoked a dozen cigarettes, and
[23:44] Speaker 2: then I heard someone coming.
[23:45] Speaker 3: In, moving quietly up the tunnel toward the light.
[23:49] Speaker 2: I played it big. Well that's fine, Phineas said, now
[23:54] Speaker 2: if you'll just signed this statement. I rolled in the
[23:58] Speaker 2: dummy that represented Phineas Merriwell double over from the force
[24:01] Speaker 2: of the slug. He shot again, and Luke's dummy toppled.
[24:04] Speaker 2: I kicked the lamp out before he got around to
[24:05] Speaker 2: yours truly go down.
[24:07] Speaker 3: And won the gold diamond. I'm probably got a big
[24:10] Speaker 3: surprise for you, friend. I worried you should be. There
[24:14] Speaker 3: wasn't even close A lousy shot. Yeah, you missed earlier
[24:19] Speaker 3: this evening and got Clay Baxter instead. I'll make up
[24:22] Speaker 3: for it.
[24:23] Speaker 2: You you haven't Frank Duffy him.
[24:27] Speaker 3: Okay, all right, don't you wait a minute.
[24:29] Speaker 2: Well, I get the lights. Eh, Hey, it's that Kelly Prowler. Yeah,
[24:35] Speaker 2: you're getting a way out of line for a ranch
[24:37] Speaker 2: for him, and Kelly.
[24:39] Speaker 3: Give it to him.
[24:40] Speaker 2: Mister Diamond, who had you killed Will Baxter? You know, Kelly,
[24:45] Speaker 2: you said something today about getting soft in the city.
[24:48] Speaker 2: Wonder just how soft I've got. Maybe you'd like to
[24:51] Speaker 2: find that turny Lewis boys.
[24:53] Speaker 3: Yes, I'll go to it, mister Diamond.
[24:57] Speaker 2: I don't like getting shot at it. It makes me
[24:59] Speaker 2: real unhappy when anyone runs around killing people.
[25:01] Speaker 5: Now, Kelly, why'd you kill Will Baxter?
[25:17] Speaker 2: Wilma Baxter?
[25:18] Speaker 3: Talk me and do it? Promised me to share a
[25:20] Speaker 3: run and for that who killed the man? Uh? It's
[25:23] Speaker 3: a big ray.
[25:24] Speaker 2: I'll get up. Sure. Hate to see you leave, mister Damon.
[25:45] Speaker 3: I hate to go with our bars, love them biscuits.
[25:48] Speaker 3: Maybe we'll get up and see you in New York
[25:50] Speaker 3: some times. Hey, Kelly is coming to does like being
[25:55] Speaker 3: tied to his horse like that?
[25:56] Speaker 2: I guess.
[26:00] Speaker 3: Here, Luke, they le us come and to hit him
[26:04] Speaker 3: with something.
[26:06] Speaker 8: Sure, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, has come to you through
[26:23] Speaker 8: the worldwide facilities of the United States Armed Forces Radio
[26:26] Speaker 8: and Television Service.
[26:36] Speaker 2: This is Andrew J.
[26:37] Speaker 7: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
[26:40] Speaker 7: Man of His Wife.
[26:41] Speaker 3: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time radio.
[26:51] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, I enjoyed this just as much as
[26:54] Speaker 1: I did the first time we played it on the podcast. Uh,
[26:58] Speaker 1: it's a really good story. It's unusual and is a
[27:03] Speaker 1: nice change of pace for Diamond and has some funny
[27:08] Speaker 1: bits and a decent enough mystery. I do remember being
[27:12] Speaker 1: puzzled by this the first time I heard it because
[27:17] Speaker 1: it had an air date in nineteen fifty three, but
[27:20] Speaker 1: it featured Martin Yarborough who died in nineteen fifty one.
[27:25] Speaker 1: But of course, understanding that it was a rebroadcast, that
[27:29] Speaker 1: issue is resolved. Arthur Q Brian appears as the local
[27:35] Speaker 1: police before he took over as Lieutenant Levinson just before.
[27:41] Speaker 1: In fact, all right, well, listener comments and feedback. Now,
[27:45] Speaker 1: Joel rites in, I noticed Diamond's girlfriend is absent from
[27:50] Speaker 1: these I either rebroadcast I miss her. Well, she is
[27:56] Speaker 1: in and out of them. The episode last week featured her.
[28:03] Speaker 1: But it is kind of I think one of those
[28:06] Speaker 1: things that happened after that first season of Richard Dimond,
[28:12] Speaker 1: the sustained season, those first fifty two episodes where I
[28:17] Speaker 1: think the series was pretty close to perfect. You had Dimond,
[28:22] Speaker 1: Bean Diamond, you had Sergeant Otis, you had the great
[28:26] Speaker 1: interplay between Diamond and Lieutenant Levinson played by Ed Bagley,
[28:33] Speaker 1: and you had the singing, the great music, and essentially
[28:39] Speaker 1: after the first season they dropped a lot of those
[28:44] Speaker 1: from subsequent episodes, and it was hard, I think, to
[28:49] Speaker 1: find any episode after that first season that really had
[28:53] Speaker 1: it all together. And I think that first season there
[28:58] Speaker 1: was just so much and really great that's going to
[29:03] Speaker 1: stand out. I don't think Richard Diamond ever got bad,
[29:06] Speaker 1: but generally you'd only have two or maybe three elements
[29:10] Speaker 1: of what made the series, you know, great in its
[29:13] Speaker 1: first year to start with. So thanks so much for
[29:16] Speaker 1: the comment, Joel. Finally, we have a comment regarding episode
[29:20] Speaker 1: twenty four to seventy one. The Kidnapp policeman Norman says
[29:24] Speaker 1: this was also a Peter Gun episode. Thanks Blake, of course,
[29:30] Speaker 1: referencing Blake Edwards, who was creative force behind both programs.
[29:36] Speaker 1: And yeah, this is just one of many cases where
[29:41] Speaker 1: someone creates something on the radio and then just repackages
[29:45] Speaker 1: it for television, which helped meet the big demands for
[29:51] Speaker 1: writing when you had up to thirty nine episodes a
[29:55] Speaker 1: year you had to produce. Now those were mostly half
[29:58] Speaker 1: hour programs those cases, but it was still a challenge.
[30:02] Speaker 1: So if you had a radio script you could whip
[30:06] Speaker 1: out and modify, that was a big advantage that you
[30:10] Speaker 1: would take take advantage of as a creator, because you'd
[30:14] Speaker 1: be able to take an existing script, fix it up,
[30:17] Speaker 1: and save time and not have to pay anybody to
[30:21] Speaker 1: write a new script. So thanks so much, nice catch
[30:24] Speaker 1: all Right, that will do it for today. Join us
[30:27] Speaker 1: back here tomorrow for Boston Blackie, and then next Wednesday
[30:30] Speaker 1: our final episode of Richard Diamond. In the meantime, send
