[1:00] Speaker 1: today's show. Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time

[2:03] Speaker 1: is on our Patreon supporters Patreon, dot great Detectives, dot net.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Our Patreon supporters are really critical to the show, and
[2:15] Speaker 1: they provide our most steady and consistent source of income
[2:21] Speaker 1: and revenue for the program. All other sources really can vary.
[2:26] Speaker 1: We may get a payout from Johnny Dollar air dot
[2:29] Speaker 1: com referrals in a given month, or we may not
[2:33] Speaker 1: depending on how many people signed up. We have other
[2:37] Speaker 1: revenue sources that come and go. Last year we had
[2:41] Speaker 1: quite a few advertisers. This year, the advertising campaign we
[2:47] Speaker 1: completed yesterday is the only one we've had all year.
[2:51] Speaker 1: I wasn't getting a little money off of YouTube, but
[2:55] Speaker 1: they recently demonetized all my videos because that's just what
[3:00] Speaker 1: YouTube does. But the Patreon support, that regular, continual, ongoing
[3:06] Speaker 1: support just really allows us to have reliable income from
[3:11] Speaker 1: the program, and this is particularly nice during the summer
[3:15] Speaker 1: months when individual contributions tend to lag. I really appreciate
[3:21] Speaker 1: what our Patreon supporters do. It's really easy to support
[3:25] Speaker 1: us on Patreon. You just enter your information one time
[3:31] Speaker 1: and funds will come out of your account every month
[3:36] Speaker 1: to support the program. As that great philosopher Ron Pappil
[3:40] Speaker 1: once said, you set it and forget it. We have
[3:43] Speaker 1: levels for contributions ranging from the rookie level of two
[3:47] Speaker 1: dollars per month up to the Chief of Detectives level
[3:51] Speaker 1: of thirty dollars per month, so you can become one
[3:55] Speaker 1: of our patreons for less than seven cents a day.
[4:00] Speaker 1: As a Patreon supporter, you will receive a generally a
[4:06] Speaker 1: monthly newsletter from me about stuff that we're going to
[4:10] Speaker 1: be playing on the program, some updates, and different plans
[4:16] Speaker 1: for the future of the series. For example, most of
[4:21] Speaker 1: the big announcements that we're making here for season ten
[4:26] Speaker 1: of the Great Detectives of All Time Radio, we're sent
[4:29] Speaker 1: out to our Patreon supporters and newsletter last month. And
[4:34] Speaker 1: you also get to vote on some things that I'll do.
[4:38] Speaker 1: For example, because of our patent supporters, we have a
[4:42] Speaker 1: summer series and our Patreon supporters get to vote on
[4:47] Speaker 1: what series we're going to do each summer, and that's
[4:50] Speaker 1: led to some great series such as our Summer of
[4:53] Speaker 1: Bogart and our Great Movies over Radio. We have one
[4:57] Speaker 1: hundred and fifty Patreons or thereabouts and I'd welcome you
[5:01] Speaker 1: to join them. Go to Patreon dot Great Detectives dot net. Well,
[5:05] Speaker 1: sorry for going on a bit. We're going to get
[5:08] Speaker 1: into today's episode of Nick Carter. Our previous additions to
[5:13] Speaker 1: the series that we listened to previously over the last
[5:17] Speaker 1: six weeks, they've all been from World War II era,
[5:21] Speaker 1: where there are actually a lot of Nick Carter episodes. However,
[5:25] Speaker 1: the real dead zone of the Nick Carter series, which
[5:28] Speaker 1: aired from nineteen forty three to nineteen fifty five, is
[5:33] Speaker 1: the last six plus years of the series. There are
[5:37] Speaker 1: only three episodes in circulation that we've played from nineteen
[5:41] Speaker 1: forty nine and non from the nineteen fifties until today.
[5:45] Speaker 1: All Right, it's time for today's episode of Nick Carter.
[5:49] Speaker 1: The original air date May the sixteenth of nineteen fifty four,
[5:54] Speaker 1: and it's the Case of the Haunted Burial Cave.
[6:00] Speaker 3: Carter Master Detective. Today's Nick Carter Adventure, The Case to
[6:10] Speaker 3: the HoTT A Burial Cave.
[6:14] Speaker 4: I wish I hadn't come into this whole cave. I
[6:17] Speaker 4: hate places like you. I always feel as if the
[6:19] Speaker 4: roof were going to drop on me.
[6:21] Speaker 3: My.
[6:22] Speaker 4: This section of the cave is shoes.
[6:24] Speaker 5: Yes, I think the secret burial chamber we're looking for
[6:27] Speaker 5: must be much like this.
[6:28] Speaker 4: You look at those big rocks up there.
[6:31] Speaker 5: Hanging norsh Somebody up there put the get back again.
[6:43] Speaker 3: Now another intriguing transcribe adventure with Nick Carter, master detective
[6:48] Speaker 3: resented in cooperation with a mutual network by doctor shows
[6:51] Speaker 3: in opad we're old famous relief far corn, callouses, bunions
[6:55] Speaker 3: and thar toes in a moment the case of the
[6:58] Speaker 3: hot a burial cave. But first, are you one of
[7:02] Speaker 3: the four million?
[7:03] Speaker 6: We hope not?
[7:04] Speaker 3: Four million? Is the number of Americans injured by accidents.
[7:07] Speaker 7: In the home every year.
[7:09] Speaker 3: Now, most of these injuries are caused by falls falls
[7:12] Speaker 3: which range in seriousness from sliding on a scatter rug
[7:15] Speaker 3: to diving accidentally headfirst down a flight of stairs. Now,
[7:19] Speaker 3: these accidents in the home are one hundred percent preventable.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Why don't you make a safety check of your home today?
[7:27] Speaker 3: Appoint yourself a committee of one to go through the
[7:29] Speaker 3: house from cellar to attic and check potential sources of
[7:33] Speaker 3: accidental injury. Pay particular attention to your stairways. Remember that
[7:37] Speaker 3: stairs are for stepping, not storing. Remove articles that have
[7:42] Speaker 3: been given semi permanent storage on the top step. They
[7:44] Speaker 3: don't belong there, Move them and find a more fitting
[7:47] Speaker 3: storage spot. Teach your children to put their toys away
[7:50] Speaker 3: when they finish plane and during your inspection trip and
[7:53] Speaker 3: after it too. Think safely and live safely. This message
[7:58] Speaker 3: has brought to you as a public service. Now today's adventure,
[8:10] Speaker 3: starring Lawn Clark as Nick Carter, The Case of the
[8:13] Speaker 3: Hat a burial cave in an isolated area near the
[8:17] Speaker 3: Canadian border. A small archaeological expedition is calf near the
[8:21] Speaker 3: mouth of an unexplored cave. The head of the exploring party,
[8:24] Speaker 3: Cole Adams, crouches alone on a narrow ledge in a
[8:28] Speaker 3: huge cavern, the pale light of his lantern casting distorted
[8:31] Speaker 3: shadows on the dripping wall.
[8:34] Speaker 2: Who's there is that? You Farrel? Why are you hiding
[8:42] Speaker 2: in the shadow?
[8:44] Speaker 8: You hid?
[8:56] Speaker 2: Oh?
[8:58] Speaker 3: The view from this plane is just magnificent. Yeah, lovely country. So,
[9:04] Speaker 3: mister Ferrel, you phoned mister Adams after he was attacked,
[9:07] Speaker 3: That right, Yes, that's right. His wife was worried when
[9:10] Speaker 3: he didn't come back, so I went into the cave
[9:11] Speaker 3: after him. He was still unconscious, but he's all right. Now, oh, yes,
[9:15] Speaker 3: Ms Bowen, he's fully recovered. Now I'm still not certain.
[9:17] Speaker 3: That's why mister Adams asked me to come up here
[9:19] Speaker 3: when nearest.
[9:20] Speaker 7: Town is thirty miles away.
[9:22] Speaker 3: Mister Adams went in and talked to the deputy sheriff there,
[9:24] Speaker 3: but the man refused to take any action.
[9:26] Speaker 9: Well, but surely with such a clear case of assaws
[9:29] Speaker 9: that intend to steal, the authorities would be forced to investigate.
[9:32] Speaker 3: Well, most of these people feel we have no right
[9:35] Speaker 3: to be poking around in the old burial cave, and
[9:37] Speaker 3: they'd be very happy if we decided to pack up
[9:39] Speaker 3: and leave.
[9:41] Speaker 9: So when the deputy sheriff refused to take any action,
[9:44] Speaker 9: mister Adams called Nick.
[9:45] Speaker 7: Yes, and when you agreed to come up here, I
[9:47] Speaker 7: was sent to meet you.
[9:49] Speaker 3: It's only about an hour by plane, but it takes
[9:51] Speaker 3: forever in a car the roads that are bad.
[9:53] Speaker 6: Who's backing this expedition?
[9:54] Speaker 3: Mister Ferrol Adams secured a grant from the nor Would Foundation.
[9:58] Speaker 3: He and his wife are in this district. Last year
[10:00] Speaker 3: on a vacation, Adams heard about this cave, did some
[10:03] Speaker 3: superficial exploring, and decided it might be a very rich
[10:06] Speaker 3: archaeological find.
[10:07] Speaker 6: Why hadn't the cave been explored before?
[10:09] Speaker 3: Now, Well, it's fairly inaccessible and there are a lot
[10:12] Speaker 3: of superstitious stories about the place. The natives are sure
[10:15] Speaker 3: it's haunted by the ghosts of the old Indians who
[10:18] Speaker 3: were buried there. I see how many members in your party.
[10:22] Speaker 3: Well there's Cole Adams, his wife and myself, and we
[10:25] Speaker 3: hired a guide, an Indian named Sam Big Eagle. At
[10:29] Speaker 3: first he claimed he could lead us directly to the
[10:31] Speaker 3: hidden burial chamber, but since we hired him, he's done
[10:33] Speaker 3: nothing but slow us up. Hey that echo lake over there,
[10:36] Speaker 3: mister Ferrell, Yes, that's it. You can see Jeff White's
[10:39] Speaker 3: cabin through the trees there. O.
[10:41] Speaker 4: Who's Jeff White.
[10:42] Speaker 3: Oh he's a very nice guy. He's blind. He lives
[10:46] Speaker 3: there on the lake all by himself. See, mister Ferrell,
[10:49] Speaker 3: you said your Indian guide blamed the ghosts of his
[10:52] Speaker 3: dead forefathers for the attack on Coal Adams.
[10:55] Speaker 6: What do you think, Kavin?
[10:57] Speaker 3: Well, I'm an archaeologist, mister Carter, not a detective. But
[11:00] Speaker 3: I'm sure of one thing. Those big purple bruises on
[11:03] Speaker 3: coal Adam's throat weren't made by a ghost.
[11:13] Speaker 9: The entrance to the cave certainly isn't very large, mister Adams.
[11:16] Speaker 5: No, it's most deceptive. But after the first twenty five
[11:20] Speaker 5: yards the entrance.
[11:21] Speaker 2: Passage grows progressively larger.
[11:23] Speaker 6: I see, we'll have a look at it in the morning,
[11:25] Speaker 6: I must.
[11:26] Speaker 4: Say, mister carrav And I'm sorry you agreed to come
[11:28] Speaker 4: up here.
[11:28] Speaker 2: Eve.
[11:29] Speaker 6: Why do you say that, missus Adams, Because if.
[11:31] Speaker 9: You'd refused, Cole might have been willing to give up
[11:34] Speaker 9: this stilly exploration.
[11:35] Speaker 5: I've too much at stake to be frightened off by
[11:38] Speaker 5: a few ghost stories.
[11:39] Speaker 4: And was it a ghost that nearly choked you today?
[11:41] Speaker 2: No, it was not.
[11:43] Speaker 5: Those were very human fingers at my throat. I'm hoping
[11:46] Speaker 5: mister Carter will soon be able to tell us who
[11:48] Speaker 5: it was trying to murder me?
[11:50] Speaker 2: And why, oh where all is flor Oh?
[11:53] Speaker 5: Over here, Jeff by the cave entrance.
[11:56] Speaker 2: This is Jeff White, the blind manly returning.
[11:58] Speaker 5: About earlier, Kevin tells who you have guessed called, Yes,
[12:02] Speaker 5: I tried Nick Carter and his assistant mis Powen. This
[12:06] Speaker 5: is Jeff White, the mayor of Eccho Lake.
[12:08] Speaker 3: That title is quite unofficial, but welcome anyway. You've come
[12:13] Speaker 3: to investigate the attack on Calls.
[12:14] Speaker 6: Yes, that's right. I'm glad.
[12:17] Speaker 3: I was afraid Call might decide to pack up and leave,
[12:19] Speaker 3: and I've been spoiled by having someone to talk with.
[12:21] Speaker 4: You mean you live up here all alone, mister White.
[12:25] Speaker 3: I do know, Miss Bowen. I hope you'll both come
[12:27] Speaker 3: to see me while you're here, but.
[12:28] Speaker 4: They certainly will, Jeff, I want them to see your house.
[12:32] Speaker 3: It's just beautiful, that's thanks to Murial. Well, I mustn't say.
[12:36] Speaker 6: I just want to say hello, Oh, mister White.
[12:38] Speaker 9: Aren't you afraid of wonderful these woods? Alone after dark?
[12:41] Speaker 5: But me and miss Bowen it's always dark, and I
[12:43] Speaker 5: feel perfectly safe for these wooden.
[12:45] Speaker 6: I know all these paths by heart.
[12:48] Speaker 9: Gosh, I think that's remarkable.
[12:51] Speaker 5: It is a remarkable man, miss Bowen. He was a
[12:54] Speaker 5: brilliant chemist and was blinded in the laboratory explosion.
[12:58] Speaker 6: Yes, I noticed a by a bit of kaffekey wears
[13:00] Speaker 6: in a key chain.
[13:01] Speaker 5: He received a large cash settlement for the loss of
[13:04] Speaker 5: his eyes, and he and his wife came up here
[13:06] Speaker 5: to live.
[13:06] Speaker 10: Is she the murial he mentioned?
[13:08] Speaker 2: Yes, she ran off several months ago with a local
[13:12] Speaker 2: No good.
[13:13] Speaker 6: I mean she just walked out on him. Yep, just disappeared.
[13:18] Speaker 9: Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm feeling out of the time,
[13:21] Speaker 9: I think i'll turn in.
[13:22] Speaker 6: Good night, Good night, mister Adams.
[13:26] Speaker 3: The morning you were attacked, you got up early and
[13:29] Speaker 3: you went into that cave alone a trip.
[13:32] Speaker 5: I'd gone some distance inside when it seemed to me
[13:34] Speaker 5: that I heard digging, digging, but it was very remote,
[13:38] Speaker 5: and it stopped as I approached. Then, without warning, I
[13:42] Speaker 5: was seized from behind.
[13:44] Speaker 6: I'll tell me.
[13:45] Speaker 3: Do you think it could have been some Indian who
[13:47] Speaker 3: resents this intrusion upon a sacred burial cave?
[13:52] Speaker 5: It could be, or it might have been someone using
[13:55] Speaker 5: that as a cover uplist card.
[13:57] Speaker 6: How do you mean, as you noticed, I.
[13:59] Speaker 5: Have a most attractive wife, many years younger than I am.
[14:04] Speaker 5: My assistant, Kevin Farrow, has quite a reputation as a
[14:07] Speaker 5: Don Juan with the ladies.
[14:09] Speaker 9: Are you accusing your assistant of trying to murder you?
[14:13] Speaker 5: No, I am making no accusations. I only know that
[14:17] Speaker 5: someone try to kill me, and I expect Jumis Carter
[14:20] Speaker 5: to find out who it was and.
[14:22] Speaker 2: See to us at A second attendant doesn't succeed.
[14:34] Speaker 3: And just the moment we'll return to today's adventure with
[14:36] Speaker 3: Nick Carter, Master Detective. But first, you know, from early
[14:41] Speaker 3: childhood we're taught not to neglect our eyes or teeth,
[14:45] Speaker 3: But when it comes to our feet, it's another story. Yes,
[14:50] Speaker 3: government records prove that seven out of every ten of
[14:53] Speaker 3: us are troubled by either painful corns, callouses, bunyan sortes,
[14:58] Speaker 3: or tender spots on the feet, and for one reason
[15:01] Speaker 3: only shoe friction and pressure. Now, the way to stop
[15:06] Speaker 3: all that needless distress in a hurry is to promptly
[15:09] Speaker 3: protect any sensitive spots on your feeder toes with soothing cushioning.
[15:14] Speaker 3: Doctor shows Zenopads. Zenopads gives super fast relief from pain,
[15:19] Speaker 3: make you or tight shoes feel easy on the peat,
[15:23] Speaker 3: stop your corns, calluses and blisters before they can start.
[15:27] Speaker 3: Remove corns and calluses one of the fastest ways known
[15:30] Speaker 3: in medical science. When used with the separate medications included
[15:34] Speaker 3: in every box. No other method can make all these claims.
[15:37] Speaker 3: Yet doctor shows Zenopads costs only pennies at application, So
[15:42] Speaker 3: get a box right away that doctor shows zeno zi
[15:47] Speaker 3: n Doctor shows Zenopads sold everywhere. Now back to the
[16:00] Speaker 3: case of the Hat of Burial Cave, Today's adventure with
[16:04] Speaker 3: Nick Carter. It's late morning and Nick and Passy, accompanied
[16:08] Speaker 3: by Cole Adams and his wife, are preparing to enter
[16:10] Speaker 3: the mysterious burial cave.
[16:13] Speaker 5: I don't know where that Indian guide of ours is,
[16:15] Speaker 5: but I guess we can manage just as well with
[16:17] Speaker 5: autumns with him.
[16:18] Speaker 6: I haven't seen them all morning.
[16:20] Speaker 10: Of where's mister barrel?
[16:22] Speaker 5: He says he's going to try to catch us some fresh.
[16:24] Speaker 6: Fish for lunch.
[16:26] Speaker 4: Honestly, call that coat of yours still reeks.
[16:29] Speaker 6: Of more fall.
[16:30] Speaker 5: It's a good clean smell.
[16:31] Speaker 2: Dear ish.
[16:33] Speaker 5: You have your laughing mister Carter all set and I
[16:36] Speaker 5: have mine, So I think we're ready.
[16:38] Speaker 8: No, you not go in there.
[16:42] Speaker 6: No here as you're missing guy.
[16:44] Speaker 9: He's been in the cave. That's why we haven't seen him.
[16:47] Speaker 2: You not go in sacred cave.
[16:50] Speaker 5: Now look here, Sam, I'm not paying you to wander
[16:52] Speaker 5: off whenever the notion takes you.
[16:54] Speaker 2: And what were you doing in the cave?
[16:56] Speaker 11: Very bad place bard these dead people, we know that.
[17:00] Speaker 2: That's why we're interested.
[17:02] Speaker 11: You go in cave, you die like others.
[17:06] Speaker 6: All listen, Sam, this is a burial cave. People were
[17:09] Speaker 6: taken here after they were there. They didn't die in
[17:11] Speaker 6: the cave.
[17:12] Speaker 8: No, they die there.
[17:15] Speaker 11: You die too.
[17:16] Speaker 5: I've had enough of this nonsense. So you're going to
[17:18] Speaker 5: guide us into this cave or nothing? No, you go away,
[17:22] Speaker 5: all right, ten, we'll go in without you.
[17:24] Speaker 8: I not let you go in there.
[17:28] Speaker 7: Sam, get out of the way, you.
[17:31] Speaker 11: Point coner, Sam, all right, go Sam, war you go
[17:39] Speaker 11: in cave and die like others.
[17:51] Speaker 3: And you're going much further into the cave. And this
[17:53] Speaker 3: when you were attacked, mister Adams.
[17:55] Speaker 5: Oh yes, i'd say about fifty yards from here. This
[17:59] Speaker 5: is a shop turn and then a kind.
[18:01] Speaker 6: Of a recess.
[18:02] Speaker 4: I wish I hadn't come. I hate places like this.
[18:06] Speaker 4: I always feel that the roof is going.
[18:08] Speaker 1: To drop on.
[18:09] Speaker 5: Well, you can go back if you like me, then
[18:11] Speaker 5: help Kevin Fish here wait.
[18:13] Speaker 6: A second, Wednesday, what's good? What is it? Nick? I
[18:18] Speaker 6: had some old thirty eight cartridges. Someone stood here and
[18:22] Speaker 6: fired a dozen or more shots, like hey.
[18:24] Speaker 4: Look here on this wall. Someone try to scratch a
[18:27] Speaker 4: message and you are murder.
[18:32] Speaker 5: Maybe it's probably just somebody wanting to leave their name
[18:35] Speaker 5: for posterity.
[18:37] Speaker 6: It's been written fairly recently.
[18:38] Speaker 2: I say, well, should we go ahead?
[18:41] Speaker 6: Yeah?
[18:43] Speaker 3: So, mister Adams, what did your Indian guys do for
[18:45] Speaker 3: a living before I hired on you?
[18:47] Speaker 2: A little of everything?
[18:48] Speaker 5: Hunting, trapping, prospecting for go Oh no, no. The uranium
[18:53] Speaker 5: fever hit this country. Everybody was out hoping to find
[18:56] Speaker 5: a rich uranium pocket and get wealthy over night.
[19:00] Speaker 4: Why this session of the cave is huge.
[19:02] Speaker 5: I think the burial chamber must be something like this.
[19:06] Speaker 4: Look at those big rocks. They just seemed to.
[19:09] Speaker 2: Tame somebody up, get back against.
[19:14] Speaker 8: They thank you.
[19:26] Speaker 9: Adam seems to be resting quietly now.
[19:28] Speaker 6: Good, well, mister Adams, how about it?
[19:31] Speaker 2: Should I go back to the cave?
[19:33] Speaker 5: We've lost so much time now, mister Carter, I suggest
[19:35] Speaker 5: we wait until the morning and go in without the lady.
[19:38] Speaker 6: That's fine with me.
[19:40] Speaker 3: You think it was Sam Big Eagle who pushed the
[19:42] Speaker 3: rock down on your coal, Yes.
[19:43] Speaker 6: Jeff, it must have been.
[19:45] Speaker 5: You try to keep us from going into the cave,
[19:46] Speaker 5: and when that failed, he probably followed us and to
[19:50] Speaker 5: crushed us with that polet I came.
[19:52] Speaker 6: To a close for comfort.
[19:53] Speaker 9: If Nick hadn't pushed us all back against the war wife.
[19:56] Speaker 4: We have been hit.
[19:57] Speaker 5: I'm sorry Neva's hysterics pro our investigating further.
[20:02] Speaker 6: Hey, Parrell hasn't returned from his fishing trip yet, Eddie.
[20:05] Speaker 2: No, I don't see him out in the lake either.
[20:08] Speaker 3: I have a suggestion, since missus Adams are so upset,
[20:10] Speaker 3: why don't you let us stay here at my cabin.
[20:12] Speaker 6: Miss Bowne could stay with her.
[20:14] Speaker 3: And I'll bumped on over at your camp for sure.
[20:16] Speaker 2: Well, it's very kind of you, Jeff.
[20:18] Speaker 6: It's quite a collection of keys you have there, mister White.
[20:21] Speaker 2: Oh, it's ridiculous of me.
[20:22] Speaker 3: I supposed to wear them up here. But the keys
[20:25] Speaker 3: I used to use when I was a chemist, officers, labs, luckers,
[20:29] Speaker 3: so on, And I wear them on my belt because
[20:31] Speaker 3: I like to hear them jingle.
[20:32] Speaker 6: They remind me of the past, and a very happy.
[20:35] Speaker 9: Past, and it's certainly a very cheerful sound.
[20:38] Speaker 3: Wow, we're not going back into the cave today. Those
[20:41] Speaker 3: we see if they can locate Sam Big Eagle right.
[20:45] Speaker 5: There are several questions, said Indians got to answer. I'll
[20:49] Speaker 5: also be interested to hear what Kevin Farrell has been
[20:51] Speaker 5: doing while somebody was trying to kill us.
[21:01] Speaker 7: Are you accusing me of trying to kill you, Adams.
[21:03] Speaker 5: I only wondered what you'd been doing all day. You
[21:05] Speaker 5: don't seem to have caught many fish.
[21:07] Speaker 7: I didn't have any luck.
[21:08] Speaker 2: Oh no, the luck was with us this time. I
[21:10] Speaker 2: don't care.
[21:11] Speaker 7: I've had about enough of this.
[21:12] Speaker 3: If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn't sneak around
[21:13] Speaker 3: putting rocks over on you.
[21:15] Speaker 2: Or maybe you'd prefer to strangle me with your bare hand.
[21:17] Speaker 3: I take that from you, rounder, Adam's fair.
[21:20] Speaker 2: Stop it, well, you're stop.
[21:21] Speaker 7: It's this child god.
[21:24] Speaker 3: Important thing right now is the fact that Sam Big
[21:26] Speaker 3: Eagle had disappeared. Stop your quarreling, and let's see what
[21:29] Speaker 3: we can do about finding him.
[21:43] Speaker 5: That Indian sneak thief came into our camp during the
[21:45] Speaker 5: night and took my rifle, my lamp, and my good coat.
[21:48] Speaker 6: Where's Jeff White this morning? Probably left early for one
[21:51] Speaker 6: of his pikes.
[21:52] Speaker 7: Night and day are all one with Jeff.
[21:54] Speaker 5: I suppose we really should have checked the Jeff's cabin
[21:56] Speaker 5: and be certain the women are all right.
[21:58] Speaker 7: Why shouldn't they be?
[21:59] Speaker 5: Well, Big Eagle prowling around it might have been a
[22:02] Speaker 5: good idea to check.
[22:03] Speaker 7: I think it's more likely he's waiting for us here
[22:05] Speaker 7: in the cave.
[22:06] Speaker 6: He look, there's a light up ahead.
[22:11] Speaker 2: You're right, what these prose is some kind of a trick.
[22:15] Speaker 2: We better go slow.
[22:23] Speaker 6: It's in the.
[22:23] Speaker 5: Same big chamber where we were attacked yesterday.
[22:26] Speaker 7: What the lantern lying on the path.
[22:32] Speaker 6: And as someone decided him might Sam big Eagle.
[22:36] Speaker 10: No, he's been strangled, then challece.
[22:48] Speaker 3: The moment will return to the day's adventure with Nick Carter,
[22:51] Speaker 3: Master Detective. But first now hear a Mutual minute. A

[23:20] Speaker 3: Mutual is your network for news as.
[23:22] Speaker 6: You like it and when you like it.
[23:24] Speaker 3: Wednesday evening, there full of Lewis Junior, Gabriel Heater, Frank Edwards,
[23:28] Speaker 3: and Ed Pitnittt.
[23:28] Speaker 6: With full quarter hours of news, as well.
[23:31] Speaker 3: As Bill Henry in his fame five Minute Capsule and
[23:33] Speaker 3: the daytime paperites Robert F. Hurley heard every Monday, Wednesday
[23:37] Speaker 3: and Friday evening, and Hazel Markel brings the woman's point
[23:40] Speaker 3: of view from the Nation's capital each Tuesday and Thursday evening.
[23:44] Speaker 3: These are but several of the mutual names for news
[23:47] Speaker 3: hear them regularly over most of these same stations. Now
[23:57] Speaker 3: back to the case of the Haunted Burial Cave. Today's
[24:00] Speaker 3: adventure with Nick Carter. The body of the murdered guide
[24:03] Speaker 3: that has been brought out of the cave and Cole
[24:05] Speaker 3: Adams has gone to tell his wife and Patsy outside
[24:08] Speaker 3: the cave entrance. Nick and Farrell examined the body. How
[24:12] Speaker 3: long do you think he's been dead, mister Carter?
[24:14] Speaker 6: I'd say not more than an hour, But.
[24:15] Speaker 3: Then the killer may still be in the cave as
[24:17] Speaker 3: as possible a little. It's more likely he got out
[24:19] Speaker 3: before we started in. It's Cole's coat, Sam's wearing and
[24:23] Speaker 3: recognized it anywhere.
[24:24] Speaker 6: Yeah, they had Cole's rifle.
[24:26] Speaker 3: And lantern rhythm too strange about the lantern, don't you think, Oh,
[24:30] Speaker 3: what do you mean?
[24:31] Speaker 2: Well?
[24:32] Speaker 3: Seems to me that if I'd killed someone, I wouldn't
[24:34] Speaker 3: go away and leave a lantern burning beside the body,
[24:37] Speaker 3: unless unless I wanted to call attention to the murder. Hello,
[24:42] Speaker 3: back from the cave so soon or the morning, Jeff
[24:44] Speaker 3: has been an accident.
[24:45] Speaker 6: An accident is someone hurt. Someone's dead.
[24:49] Speaker 3: They found the body when we started into the cave.
[24:52] Speaker 3: An awful shock for poor missus Adams never.
[24:54] Speaker 6: Wasn't with us. Cole is going to tell her and
[24:56] Speaker 6: miss Bowen about it?
[24:57] Speaker 7: Now?
[24:57] Speaker 3: Oh, will and Fledge was bed the first time.
[25:00] Speaker 6: Shock.
[25:02] Speaker 7: That's yesterday.
[25:02] Speaker 6: It would have been too much.
[25:04] Speaker 10: Mister right.
[25:05] Speaker 6: You haven't asked us who was murdered. I assumed it
[25:08] Speaker 6: was the Indian.
[25:09] Speaker 3: Yes, that's right. He was strangled to death. That accounts
[25:12] Speaker 3: for his disappearance yesterday. Now it doesn't. He came back
[25:15] Speaker 3: to the camp during the night. He's killed early this morning.
[25:19] Speaker 3: How can you know that he stole Coal's coat and
[25:21] Speaker 3: rifle and lantern. Oh, by the way, mister Wright, you
[25:25] Speaker 3: must have left camp very early this morning.
[25:28] Speaker 2: Yes, it was very early.
[25:29] Speaker 3: I couldn't sleep, so I went down to the lake.
[25:32] Speaker 3: I find it soon to listen to the water, I
[25:34] Speaker 3: see poshare to join Adams and the women at the cabin.
[25:37] Speaker 6: Mister Carter, Yeah, I want.
[25:39] Speaker 3: To arrange for another expedition into that cave.
[25:55] Speaker 9: But I can't understand why Sam Big Eagles should have
[25:57] Speaker 9: been murdered.
[25:58] Speaker 5: Maybe it was to frighten the rest to us away.
[26:00] Speaker 3: I'm no slewt, mister Carter, But mightn't be Indian have
[26:03] Speaker 3: been killed because he knew too much?
[26:04] Speaker 6: I mean, perhaps he knew who'd attacked mister Adams earlier. Yes,
[26:07] Speaker 6: but why didn't he tell us.
[26:09] Speaker 4: He might have been paid to keep quiet?
[26:12] Speaker 3: Why?
[26:12] Speaker 8: Yes?
[26:13] Speaker 9: And then the murderer arranged to meet him in the
[26:15] Speaker 9: cave to make a payment and killed him instead.
[26:18] Speaker 2: Mister Adams.
[26:19] Speaker 3: Has it occurred to you that there may be other
[26:21] Speaker 3: references to the cave?
[26:22] Speaker 2: Well, it's very likely.
[26:24] Speaker 5: The cave system as complex as this one would be
[26:26] Speaker 5: almost certain. I have another opening or other openings on
[26:29] Speaker 5: the surface, but we haven't located any of them as yet.
[26:32] Speaker 3: Do you want me to go into the village to
[26:33] Speaker 3: get the deputy sheriff.
[26:34] Speaker 6: Oh, yes, yes, if you will, mister Ferrell.
[26:36] Speaker 7: It'll take me all day.
[26:37] Speaker 3: It means I can't possibly get him back here before
[26:40] Speaker 3: late afternoon.
[26:40] Speaker 6: Tomorrow.
[26:41] Speaker 3: It's a pity we have on the telephone. Well, I
[26:44] Speaker 3: think we.
[26:44] Speaker 2: Should all agree that no one is to go into.
[26:46] Speaker 9: That dreadful cave again until Kevin gets back with a
[26:50] Speaker 9: deputy sheriff.
[26:51] Speaker 6: Sorry, Missus Adams, I can't make such a promise.
[26:54] Speaker 3: Does that mean you intend to go back into the cave,
[26:56] Speaker 3: mister Carter, I haven't any choice. I've got to go
[26:59] Speaker 3: into that cave to find an answer to this riddle.
[27:01] Speaker 9: Well, when do you mean to go in that?
[27:05] Speaker 3: Missus Adams. Must be a secret between miss Bowen and me.
[27:19] Speaker 6: Missus Adams seems to be asleep, so do the men.
[27:23] Speaker 9: And now we'll be able to get away to the
[27:25] Speaker 9: cave without anyone knowing any fun.
[27:26] Speaker 6: No, no, betcy, that will defeat my purpose.
[27:29] Speaker 10: You.
[27:30] Speaker 3: Yeah, the killer must hear us leave. There's no point
[27:34] Speaker 3: not going into the cave. Oh, so as we go out,
[27:38] Speaker 3: I'll just close this cabin door a little too loudly.
[27:44] Speaker 12: Do you think that'll be heard me by the person
[27:47] Speaker 12: listening for us. Yeah, And now we go to the cave, yes,
[27:50] Speaker 12: but not too quickly. We want to allow our killer
[27:54] Speaker 12: plenty of time to set his trap.
[27:56] Speaker 11: Ah, I.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Don't think we were followed into the cave.
[28:09] Speaker 3: Nick, I didn't expect to be I'm sure the killer
[28:12] Speaker 3: has a private entrance.
[28:14] Speaker 9: Well, if there is some one waiting here to kill
[28:17] Speaker 9: a snick, doesn't this latin make us an awfully good target,
[28:21] Speaker 9: not bad?
[28:21] Speaker 6: Say the lantern isn't important?
[28:23] Speaker 9: It is to me, Golly, I'd hate to be in
[28:25] Speaker 9: here in the dark. It's bad enough even with the lad.
[28:31] Speaker 2: I say, down, black Latin.
[28:33] Speaker 4: I dropped it and went out. Now how it Cassy
[28:37] Speaker 4: was shooting at us. That's the way I wanted it.
[28:39] Speaker 4: That sounds like Jeff White.
[28:44] Speaker 2: Now you two are in the dark just as I am.
[28:48] Speaker 4: I mean, we're even the match.
[28:49] Speaker 8: Bottom in the cave, a blind man as the.
[28:52] Speaker 2: Saying giant, you do you better give yourself up? White
[28:58] Speaker 2: here myself.
[29:01] Speaker 4: No, I'm going to kill you.
[29:03] Speaker 13: It may take time, Connor, I'm safely hidden behind the
[29:07] Speaker 13: big rocks.
[29:09] Speaker 8: I can make very patience.
[29:12] Speaker 2: I'm going to kill you, doster sorli as I kill
[29:16] Speaker 2: me us.
[29:22] Speaker 7: In just a moment.
[29:23] Speaker 3: We'll return for the conclusion of the day's adventure with
[29:25] Speaker 3: Nick Carter master Detective. But first I'll hear a mutual minute.
[29:31] Speaker 3: Remember the song accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.
[29:34] Speaker 3: That's a pretty good idea. Generally speaking, it's always easy
[29:37] Speaker 3: to find something to gripe about. But well, maybe we'd
[29:39] Speaker 3: find a lot more to sing about if we only
[29:42] Speaker 3: started to think for a minute about the future. For instance,
[29:45] Speaker 3: the fact well that we have more reason to believe
[29:47] Speaker 3: in our country's capacity for development of progress than ever before.
[29:51] Speaker 3: America is still a young country, still expanding, still growing physically, economically,
[29:56] Speaker 3: and on the realm of new ideas and new sciences. Infants,
[30:00] Speaker 3: the children, and the young people of the day can
[30:02] Speaker 3: look forward to a tremendous period, an exciting period, one
[30:06] Speaker 3: of hope and promise. And there are coal hard facts
[30:09] Speaker 3: to prove this. We believe in those facts, in the
[30:12] Speaker 3: promise they hold for America's future, and the advertisers who
[30:15] Speaker 3: use the time and facilities of the world's largest network
[30:18] Speaker 3: believe in them too. This message has been brought to
[30:20] Speaker 3: you as a public service. Now for the conclusion of
[30:32] Speaker 3: the Case and the Haunted Burial Cave, Today's adventure with
[30:35] Speaker 3: Nick Carter, Nick and Patsy wait tensely in the total
[30:38] Speaker 3: blackness of the cave while the blind killer crouches behind
[30:42] Speaker 3: a big rock I'm between.
[30:44] Speaker 6: You and the entrance.
[30:45] Speaker 13: Carter, you can't escape, and it has hit me behind
[30:50] Speaker 13: this rock. I know a great credits in this cave.
[30:55] Speaker 13: It's only a blind man could know it.
[30:58] Speaker 2: Is this the way you trapped your wife from the other.
[31:01] Speaker 7: Yes, he was going to take you him.
[31:04] Speaker 13: Away, so I tricked the mem to come in here
[31:07] Speaker 13: where I have the advantage.
[31:09] Speaker 6: Then I killed him just as I'm going to kill you.
[31:14] Speaker 2: Are you?
[31:16] Speaker 3: We're hitting in a recess in the wall, so we're
[31:19] Speaker 3: protected too, and we can be just as patient as
[31:24] Speaker 3: you can.
[31:33] Speaker 4: Thank you must have bot again down as if he
[31:35] Speaker 4: dropped his gun.
[31:36] Speaker 6: Here, strike a magic.
[31:39] Speaker 4: He's down leg a gun? Nick, How did you hit
[31:44] Speaker 4: him in the dark?
[31:45] Speaker 3: His keys gave him away, Bessy, and he moved out
[31:48] Speaker 3: from behind the rock to get a better shot at us.
[31:50] Speaker 6: That key chain he wore was just like a bell
[31:53] Speaker 6: and a cat.
[32:02] Speaker 2: Jeff White certainly had me fooled, so he killed.
[32:05] Speaker 4: His wife and the man she planned to run away with.
[32:08] Speaker 3: That's right, missus Annam. Since White recovered consciousness, he's given
[32:12] Speaker 3: me the whole story. He tricked him into a rondovu
[32:15] Speaker 3: in the cave, and then in the total darkness killed
[32:17] Speaker 3: them both.
[32:18] Speaker 9: The other man put up a fight, didn't he make?
[32:20] Speaker 3: He must have fatchy. Those empty shells I found on
[32:22] Speaker 3: the path that first day must have been from his gun.
[32:25] Speaker 3: He crouched there as we did last night, and fired
[32:28] Speaker 3: at White. But not even White can fire as accurately
[32:31] Speaker 3: as you can at a sound, mister Carter.
[32:33] Speaker 5: Well, then that's scrawling on the cave wall near the
[32:35] Speaker 5: spot where you found the shells must have been made
[32:38] Speaker 5: by White's wife.
[32:39] Speaker 9: She started to scratch her name, and you are the
[32:42] Speaker 9: first part of Muriel that she must have been killed
[32:44] Speaker 9: before she could finish it.
[32:46] Speaker 3: After White killed them, they took their bodies to the
[32:48] Speaker 3: inner burial chamber. He must have felt sure they'd never
[32:52] Speaker 3: be discovered, But then he let the story leak out
[32:54] Speaker 3: that missus White had deserted him for another man.
[32:57] Speaker 6: Everyone felt very sorry for White, and that was the end.
[32:59] Speaker 7: Of it until we showed up here prepared to explore
[33:02] Speaker 7: that cave.
[33:02] Speaker 3: Yes, but you'd given White no warning you were coming,
[33:05] Speaker 3: so we couldn't move the bodies. Consequently, he had to
[33:07] Speaker 3: frighten you away, and that's all he meant to do
[33:10] Speaker 3: at first, that scary you.
[33:11] Speaker 9: Off course, he didn't know that my husband is a
[33:13] Speaker 9: stubborn sort who doesn't frighten easily.
[33:15] Speaker 5: Well, I guess my calling you into the case, mister Cattam,
[33:18] Speaker 5: was to really panic White.
[33:19] Speaker 3: Had Sam Big Eagle found the bodies, as if why
[33:21] Speaker 3: White strangled him? No, Big Eagle was murdered because he
[33:24] Speaker 3: was wearing the coat he'd stolen from mister Adams.
[33:27] Speaker 2: What's my coat got to do with it?
[33:30] Speaker 3: It smelled of mothballs, remember whiteead it depend on sounds
[33:34] Speaker 3: and odors for identification.
[33:36] Speaker 9: So he killed Big Eagle thinking it was mister.
[33:38] Speaker 3: Adams, that's right, and he gave himself away when he
[33:41] Speaker 3: came into the camp. After which, remember mister Ferrell, his
[33:43] Speaker 3: first reaction to news that there'd been a death was
[33:46] Speaker 3: what a shock it'll be for missus.
[33:48] Speaker 4: Adams, because he thought he'd killed coal.
[33:52] Speaker 6: That's right.
[33:53] Speaker 3: See, when he realized that mister Adams couldn't be frightened off,
[33:55] Speaker 3: he decided to kill him to stop further expiration. I
[33:58] Speaker 3: imagine he hoped to point suspicion at the end guide
[34:00] Speaker 3: what a shark it must have been for him to
[34:02] Speaker 3: discover that he'd killed the wrong man. Another thing which
[34:04] Speaker 3: pointed to White was the lantern left burning beside the body.
[34:08] Speaker 3: Your reaction, mister Ferrell, was normal. You couldn't understand why
[34:11] Speaker 3: a killer would have left the lantern burning.
[34:13] Speaker 9: And why simply wasn't aware of the light.
[34:15] Speaker 3: Well, mister Adams, now that the bodies of Missus White
[34:18] Speaker 3: and the other men have been recovered, there's no reason
[34:20] Speaker 3: you shouldn't go ahead of your expirations. This burial cave
[34:23] Speaker 3: wasn't taunted by the ghost of ancient Indians, but by
[34:27] Speaker 3: a ruthless killer who paired discovery. Nick Carter Master Detective

[36:15] Speaker 14: The great Detectives of Old Time Radio with Adam Graham.
[36:17] Speaker 14: Now let's get back into the show.
[36:26] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, this episode does have a pretty strong
[36:31] Speaker 1: nineteen fifties feel to it in a lot of ways.
[36:34] Speaker 1: Certainly the music hues is a lot more consistent with
[36:39] Speaker 1: that era, and as well as the style of the announcements.
[36:45] Speaker 1: And I thought the middle one just say hey, we're
[36:49] Speaker 1: confident that things are going to get better and that's
[36:52] Speaker 1: our commercial message. That one was interesting, and of course
[36:57] Speaker 1: we had the reference to us searching for uranium, which
[37:03] Speaker 1: was a big focus in the atomic age, and you
[37:07] Speaker 1: find some in the late forties that reference uranium, but
[37:11] Speaker 1: it becomes bigger as you get into the nineteen fifties.
[37:15] Speaker 1: The part at the end where Nick Carter puts his
[37:20] Speaker 1: and Patsy's live in danger in order to capture the crook.
[37:25] Speaker 1: That wasn't something that we heard in the wartime Nick
[37:28] Speaker 1: Carter episodes, but in the post war nineteen forties era
[37:32] Speaker 1: that was actually pretty common for this series. So I
[37:36] Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed that, and I do have hope that
[37:38] Speaker 1: we'll eventually hear more Nick Carter episodes coming into circulation.
[37:46] Speaker 1: Radio gold Index list more than three hundred episodes of
[37:51] Speaker 1: Nick Carter, which it sometime or another existed, and which
[37:57] Speaker 1: I hope continue to exist and will someday be digitized,
[38:01] Speaker 1: though I don't know if we'll ever hear an abode
[38:03] Speaker 1: quite as late in the series run as this one.
[38:06] Speaker 1: Though they do list several episodes from nineteen forty nine
[38:10] Speaker 1: and nineteen fifty so here's hoping that we eventually get
[38:13] Speaker 1: to hear some of those. Now our news on season
[38:17] Speaker 1: ten and what you're going to hear on Tuesdays during
[38:21] Speaker 1: season ten, and I'm pleased to announce it the only
[38:25] Speaker 1: really brand new series that we will be doing next
[38:30] Speaker 1: season will be Standby for Crime and so those will
[38:33] Speaker 1: be on Tuesdays, and then we are going to have
[38:37] Speaker 1: some revisits of series where there's new circulating episodes. We
[38:42] Speaker 1: have three series with newly circulating episodes and we'll feature
[38:47] Speaker 1: those and that will be it after Standby for Crime.
[38:52] Speaker 1: So no new additional series in season ten. All right now,
[38:58] Speaker 1: listener comments and feedback, And I have a tweet from
[39:02] Speaker 1: Eric who tweets me along with two other podcasters slash Uturbers.
[39:10] Speaker 1: He writes, Hey, y'all, tagging you because I feel, at
[39:13] Speaker 1: varying degrees, your media is heavy on pause editing. The
[39:18] Speaker 1: thread has a blurb from an article about leaving in
[39:21] Speaker 1: some silence so those who view your media can process
[39:25] Speaker 1: the information. And I do appreciate the feedback, Eric, and
[39:31] Speaker 1: I will admit that I can be a little bit
[39:34] Speaker 1: over aggressive in removing some pauses. Now I will admit
[39:41] Speaker 1: that I edit out some pauses just because I'm not
[39:44] Speaker 1: actually pausing. I struggle sometimes to follow the advice of
[39:50] Speaker 1: the great Steve Smith, who portrayed Red Green on Canadian television,
[39:57] Speaker 1: and his advice that when your mind goes blank, hit
[40:02] Speaker 1: the mute button because oftentimes I'm not pausing. I'm going
[40:09] Speaker 1: and so I want to cut the ums. But I
[40:13] Speaker 1: will note that you really don't want to leave a
[40:16] Speaker 1: whole lot of dead air, but you know, half second
[40:20] Speaker 1: or something to think. I think that's an important area,
[40:25] Speaker 1: you know, not to you know, go crazy on. But
[40:29] Speaker 1: I want to be sure it flows smoothly. But yeah,
[40:33] Speaker 1: it does sound natural rather than like everything's just clipped
[40:38] Speaker 1: together really fast. So I appreciate the feedback and I'll
[40:41] Speaker 1: take that under consideration. All right, that'll be all for now.
