[2:15] Speaker 2: the Silly.
[2:16] Speaker 3: Eyes from New York, the makers of Clippercraft Clothes for Men,
[2:20] Speaker 3: and nine hundred and twenty four leading retail stores from
[2:23] Speaker 3: coast to coast present the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.
[2:40] Speaker 3: Our stories are based upon the character of Sherlock Holmes,
[2:43] Speaker 3: created by Sir Arthur Colan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is portrayed
[2:47] Speaker 3: by John Stanley, Doctor Watson by Alfred Shirley, and the dramatizations.
[2:51] Speaker 4: Are by Edith Meiser.
[2:57] Speaker 3: Well, here we are, once again on the threshold of
[2:59] Speaker 3: Doctor watson study. We find mister Holmes genial biographers strutting
[3:03] Speaker 3: up and down in front of his fireplace.
[3:05] Speaker 5: Evening.
[3:05] Speaker 4: Doctor, you look fit. The Christmas festivities don't seem to
[3:08] Speaker 4: have cut you down.
[3:09] Speaker 6: I am fit, mister Harris, very fit, bitten that I'm
[3:12] Speaker 6: rather well fitted, great Scottman.
[3:16] Speaker 7: Well you're hi.
[3:17] Speaker 3: Why doctor Watson, don't tell me Santa Claus brought you
[3:20] Speaker 3: a clippocrat?
[3:20] Speaker 1: So oh why not?
[3:22] Speaker 6: Just because I'm a wee bitter venerable doesn't mean I'm antique.
[3:26] Speaker 6: I still enjoy making a good impression, don't you know?
[3:29] Speaker 3: Well, in that suit, it'll be the girls that go
[3:32] Speaker 3: when you walk down the street. Doctor, Seriously, now, doctor,
[3:36] Speaker 3: suppose you tell us what tonight's story is to be about.
[3:39] Speaker 6: Well, tonight, I thought i'd relate how Homes and I
[3:42] Speaker 6: spent New Year's Eve off the Silly Isles.
[3:44] Speaker 4: The Silly Isles, it sounds appropriate. Doctor.
[3:48] Speaker 6: The name of these particular islands is spilled sc I
[3:52] Speaker 6: l l Y. They are located roughly one hundred miles
[3:55] Speaker 6: southwest of Lend's End. Mister Harrison, Oh, what in the
[3:57] Speaker 6: world were you doing there on New Year's Eve? Trying
[3:59] Speaker 6: to into great maritime catastrophe? You remember what happened to
[4:03] Speaker 6: the Titanic, You know what happened to Lucitania were the
[4:07] Speaker 6: lives of those on the ocean land are gigantic, but
[4:09] Speaker 6: in even greater danger when Holmes and I went over
[4:13] Speaker 6: the side on New Year's Eve in the year nineteen twelve.
[4:17] Speaker 6: Oh but good heavens did I go getting ahead of
[4:20] Speaker 6: myself again? Suppose I fix us a Tom and Jerry
[4:23] Speaker 6: while you tell our listeners how to stop the year
[4:25] Speaker 6: right in at Clippercraft's clothes.
[4:28] Speaker 3: Fair enough, doctor Watson, millions of men like you will
[4:31] Speaker 3: start the new year in a smart, new clipper Craft
[4:33] Speaker 3: suit and overcoat. Yesterday, more men than ever before wear
[4:37] Speaker 3: Clippercraft clothes. For we've sold more clipper Craft clothes than
[4:41] Speaker 3: ever before in our entire history. There's a reason, of course,
[4:44] Speaker 3: the wise old American public, with its eye for value,
[4:47] Speaker 3: has pronounced clipper Craft the most remarkable clothing bies they've
[4:51] Speaker 3: ever seen. The reason for these amazing values is the
[4:55] Speaker 3: sensational clipper Craft Plan. Concentrating the buying power of nine
[4:59] Speaker 3: hundred twenty four of the nation's leading stores from coast
[5:02] Speaker 3: to coast. It accounts for tremendous savings in manufacturing and
[5:06] Speaker 3: distribution costs. That's why truly fine clipper Craft suits are
[5:10] Speaker 3: only forty and forty five dollars, why clipper Craft top
[5:14] Speaker 3: coats and overcoats are only forty dollars, and sport jackets
[5:18] Speaker 3: only twenty six fifty. Clipper craft values are downright amazing.
[5:23] Speaker 3: Compare them with clothes selling for many dollars more. And now,
[5:33] Speaker 3: Doctor Watson, to return to the New Year's Eve. You
[5:35] Speaker 3: and Sherlock home celebrated on the good ship Gigantic.
[5:38] Speaker 6: Yes, here's your Tom and Jenny. Mister hardis like other careful,
[5:42] Speaker 6: don't burn yourself. Yes, it is probably the most technic
[5:46] Speaker 6: New Year's Eve I ever experienced. Nothing is as teddifying
[5:50] Speaker 6: to a seafaring man as the thought of fire aboard ship.
[5:53] Speaker 6: The panic the isolution, But that's not the hito there. Yes,
[5:58] Speaker 6: let me see. It was the last day of the
[6:00] Speaker 6: year nineteen hundred and twelve. Its inception was sufficiently placid,
[6:05] Speaker 6: I must say. A light snow was falling as homes
[6:08] Speaker 6: and I seated ourselves on either side of a well
[6:11] Speaker 6: filled breakfast table. The flames of our seagull fire reflected
[6:16] Speaker 6: themselves cheerfully in the generous coffee pot. The whole house
[6:20] Speaker 6: was filled with the pleasant aroma of the stuffing. Missus
[6:23] Speaker 6: Hudson was preparing for our New Year's goose. Suddenly there
[6:27] Speaker 6: came a frantic jangle the front door bell.
[6:34] Speaker 4: No definitely no, no home.
[6:37] Speaker 3: Whoever it is that's pulling our front doorbell out by
[6:39] Speaker 3: the roots, and whatever its problem is, I'm definitely not interested. Yes, Watson,
[6:43] Speaker 3: being the world's greatest consulting detective has its disadvantages. People
[6:47] Speaker 3: always manage to get into difficulties at the most inopportune moments.
[6:50] Speaker 7: Yes, you should try being a doctor. Homes.
[6:52] Speaker 6: No female since Eve has ever decided to become a
[6:54] Speaker 6: mother at a convenient time.
[6:58] Speaker 3: Oh, come in confounded, mister Holmes, mister Sherlock Holmes, naturally,
[7:03] Speaker 3: whatever your problem is, I warn you it'll have to
[7:05] Speaker 3: wait till after the holiday.
[7:06] Speaker 8: And he can't wait, mister Holmes. Close to two thousand
[7:09] Speaker 8: lives are at stake. I pray to Heaven you'll be
[7:12] Speaker 8: able to reach them before it's too late.
[7:13] Speaker 3: Reach home. Where and what is this disaster you anticipate
[7:17] Speaker 3: with such trepidation The steamship Gigantic, mister Holmes. She should
[7:20] Speaker 3: be somewhere off the Silly Issles by midnight.
[7:23] Speaker 8: We've been reliably informed that an attempt will be made
[7:25] Speaker 8: to set fire to her at that time. If successful,
[7:28] Speaker 8: it'll be the greatest disaster in old maritime history.
[7:31] Speaker 3: Yes, in that case, I suppose I shall have to
[7:33] Speaker 3: forego the little celebration i'd planned for this evening.
[7:35] Speaker 7: Have to really homes you are a cold blooded fish.
[7:39] Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry, I don't believe you've met my colleague,
[7:41] Speaker 3: doctor Watson.
[7:41] Speaker 4: Mister Pembroke, Reginald Pembroke.
[7:44] Speaker 7: I'm chairman of.
[7:45] Speaker 8: The board of Floyd's, the famous insurance company.
[7:48] Speaker 4: Oh.
[7:48] Speaker 3: Then your desire to prevent this disaster isn't entirely humanitarian.
[7:52] Speaker 8: Not entirely, but neither is it all together mercenary. There's
[7:56] Speaker 8: more to stake than the lives the passengers on board
[7:58] Speaker 8: the Gigantic. If she goes down, the financial stability of
[8:02] Speaker 8: the British Empire goes with her.
[8:03] Speaker 4: Interesting, hey, Watson continues to Pembroke.
[8:06] Speaker 8: You may not be aware, mister Holmes, that during this
[8:09] Speaker 8: past year there have been a terrifying number of marine catastrophes.
[8:11] Speaker 7: Holmes knows everything, mister Pembroke.
[8:14] Speaker 3: I am quite cognizant to the fact that quite a
[8:15] Speaker 3: few of the newest and fastest British liners have been
[8:18] Speaker 3: destroyed at sea by fire storm and accident.
[8:22] Speaker 8: Ah, they weren't accidents, mister Holmes, I assure you.
[8:25] Speaker 3: Quite the Egyptian Star was destroyed by fire in the
[8:28] Speaker 3: Persian Gulf, eight hundred lives. Last, the Lord Nelson disappeared
[8:31] Speaker 3: in the Typhoon and the Indian Ocean, no survivors. The
[8:34] Speaker 3: Southern Cross exploded and sank off the coast of Brazil
[8:37] Speaker 3: one thousand, two hundred casualties. The Wellington, the Lady Jane
[8:42] Speaker 3: Gray and the Eldorado all caught fire in different parts
[8:44] Speaker 3: of the Pacific.
[8:45] Speaker 4: Total deaths over two thousand.
[8:48] Speaker 3: The greatest disaster was last April, when the Titanic ran
[8:51] Speaker 3: into an iceberg, with a loss of over fifteen hundred souls.
[8:54] Speaker 8: The public's becoming panicky about traveling on British ships.
[8:57] Speaker 4: The ships about the nationalities are taking all our trade.
[9:00] Speaker 8: Three banks and nearly ten investment concerns where large marine
[9:03] Speaker 8: interests have gone to the wall. Even Floyd's is not
[9:06] Speaker 8: too secure. But that is not the most serious aspect
[9:10] Speaker 8: of the situation.
[9:10] Speaker 7: Really, good Lord, don't tell me that's worse to come.
[9:13] Speaker 4: Much worse. Stock to Wutston.
[9:15] Speaker 8: Those ships disappeared in many parts of the world. They
[9:18] Speaker 8: were sunk by diverse methods. One factor, however, was the
[9:22] Speaker 8: same in each disaster, and that was The cargo carried
[9:25] Speaker 8: by each ship was gold.
[9:28] Speaker 4: English goal.
[9:29] Speaker 8: If it ever became known how much British bullion lies
[9:31] Speaker 8: at the bottom of the Seven Seas, British credit would.
[9:34] Speaker 4: Be badly crippled.
[9:36] Speaker 8: As a matter of fact, the Bank of England has
[9:37] Speaker 8: been forced to import a large shipment of gold from.
[9:40] Speaker 6: Canada, and it's on the Gigantic. Good Lord, no wonder
[9:43] Speaker 6: eure upset the.
[9:44] Speaker 8: Whole economic structure of the British Empires at state, mister Holmes,
[9:47] Speaker 8: nothing must happen to the Gigantic.
[9:48] Speaker 4: What makes you think anything will? A cable was.
[9:51] Speaker 8: Sent shortly out to the Gigantic left Queenstown. She makes
[9:54] Speaker 8: a stop in Ireland on her east bound voyage. You
[9:56] Speaker 8: know she sailed shortly before dawn this morning. The gang
[10:00] Speaker 8: plans have been drawn in, the last line have been
[10:02] Speaker 8: cast off, and the great propellers have begun to churn. Suddenly,
[10:07] Speaker 8: the dark Master noticed someone sliding down the ship's side.
[10:10] Speaker 4: On a rope.
[10:20] Speaker 8: Hi, look up, there, sir, some fools climbed over the side.
[10:23] Speaker 8: He's coming down on a rope.
[10:24] Speaker 7: Go back.
[10:24] Speaker 4: If we'll go back, he'll be here. He'll never make
[10:26] Speaker 4: the dock.
[10:27] Speaker 8: He'll follow the water and be swept out of the ship. No.
[10:29] Speaker 4: No, he's pushing the rope away from the ship with
[10:31] Speaker 4: his feet. He's swinging out. He's going to jump. He
[10:35] Speaker 4: made it some whe won the bridge. You've seen him.
[10:37] Speaker 4: He's calling to the chat, picked himself up.
[10:38] Speaker 8: He's shouting back an in hell, good lord, I know
[10:47] Speaker 8: the manswer. It's Smoky Joe the Firebird. If a gigantic
[10:51] Speaker 8: don't catch fire between here and south Hunt, And I'm
[10:53] Speaker 8: a Dutchman.
[11:03] Speaker 3: Smokey Joe seems to me we've heard of him before,
[11:05] Speaker 3: a Watson, not merely as an expert arsonist, but a
[11:08] Speaker 3: dangerous pyromaniac as well.
[11:09] Speaker 4: They caught him, I hope, mister pembroke.
[11:11] Speaker 8: No, no, mister Holmes. Unfortunately he is too quick for them.
[11:14] Speaker 8: He crawled down a ladder and disappeared among the pilings
[11:17] Speaker 8: under the darks.
[11:17] Speaker 3: So the gigantic is headed for Southampton with a nice
[11:20] Speaker 3: bit of Joe's handiwork aboard.
[11:21] Speaker 7: Do you think it's a fire bomb he homes.
[11:23] Speaker 3: Not necessarily, Watson. There are many ingenious ways of starting
[11:26] Speaker 3: a fire. You know, whoever hired Joe would prefer to
[11:29] Speaker 3: have it happen well out to see I imagine I thought.
[11:31] Speaker 8: Exactly, mister Holmes. We wireless, Captain Brooks to make a search,
[11:34] Speaker 8: of course, but on a ship the size of the
[11:37] Speaker 8: Gigantic is like looking.
[11:38] Speaker 4: For a needle in a haystack.
[11:40] Speaker 8: You are our one hope, mister Holmes. If only you
[11:43] Speaker 8: couldn't get on board in time.
[11:45] Speaker 4: And how do you suggest I go about that little assignment?
[11:48] Speaker 8: The Chairman of the Great Western Railway has placed the
[11:49] Speaker 8: Royal Train Joe disposal all out. The traffic will be
[11:53] Speaker 8: cleared off the tracks. Now you should reach Land's End
[11:55] Speaker 8: shortly after lunch. My yart the albatross will be waiting
[11:59] Speaker 8: for you in the harbor and lives very speedy. Little
[12:02] Speaker 8: grabbed them with any luck. You should side the Gigantic
[12:04] Speaker 8: around eleven o'clock tonight.
[12:06] Speaker 3: Yes, eleven o'clock, was it? Smoky Joe called out, Happy
[12:09] Speaker 3: New Year? In hell, it won't be New Year till midnight.
[12:12] Speaker 3: If we reach the Gigantic by eleven, we may just
[12:14] Speaker 3: possibly be in time. Six bells, it's eleven o'clock. Confound
[12:33] Speaker 3: this fog. We've had to reduce our speed to half Oh.
[12:35] Speaker 7: We'll never catch up to the Gigantic now.
[12:37] Speaker 4: Homes nonsense. She's had to slow down too. I only
[12:40] Speaker 4: hope you don't miss out entirely in this fog.
[12:42] Speaker 7: I don't really care.
[12:44] Speaker 4: You don't sound very fit, Watson. What's up?
[12:46] Speaker 6: Do you have to use that unfortunate expression and tell
[12:50] Speaker 6: me you're feeling screamish?
[12:52] Speaker 7: Is this confounded your role? I can stand a good risk. See,
[12:55] Speaker 7: but this bobbing about in a teacup.
[12:57] Speaker 4: It's pitty. I didn't bring them mother sills seasick pill mother.
[13:01] Speaker 7: There's only one remedy for this sort of thing.
[13:03] Speaker 4: What's that?
[13:04] Speaker 6: Staying on shore? It's jolly way to spend New Year's Eve?
[13:07] Speaker 6: This is who do you suppose? Is this possible for
[13:10] Speaker 6: these confounded sinkings?
[13:12] Speaker 7: Anyway?
[13:13] Speaker 3: Pembroke seems to feel it's a foreign plot a little eat.
[13:15] Speaker 3: European shipping industries benefit the most, of course.
[13:20] Speaker 7: Holmes, did you hear that?
[13:22] Speaker 6: I jove, yes, sounds like an ocean liner, right enough, Yes,
[13:31] Speaker 6: we're signals Scott.
[13:39] Speaker 7: This is the gigantic glooming out of the fog.
[13:42] Speaker 6: Looks like a mountain coming at us.
[13:51] Speaker 3: Yes, Sharlock, Holmes and doctor Watson coming aboard.
[13:54] Speaker 5: Let down a ladder, no, no, yeah, here's the Nana Watson, I.
[14:05] Speaker 4: Think you can manage it.
[14:06] Speaker 6: I'd climb up the Eiffel Tar on a clothes line
[14:09] Speaker 6: if it could get me off this bouncing cottage shell.
[14:26] Speaker 3: Quite an impressive array of instruments you have up here
[14:28] Speaker 3: on the bridge, Captain Brooks.
[14:29] Speaker 4: Here's mister Holmes. I'm not gigantic.
[14:31] Speaker 9: We have the latest of everything, and none of it's
[14:33] Speaker 9: in a real use in case of fire, I'd sooner
[14:36] Speaker 9: face a typhoon, or a shipwreck, or a mutiny even
[14:38] Speaker 9: dog ratt than a fire on board ship.
[14:40] Speaker 7: Surely a ship this side should be fairly fireproof.
[14:43] Speaker 4: That's what you might sing, doctor Watson.
[14:45] Speaker 9: But that are three factors that make a fire on
[14:47] Speaker 9: a luxury line are dangerous. First, there's all the confounded
[14:50] Speaker 9: ornamental woodwork that's used in a passenger construction. Second, there's
[14:53] Speaker 9: the fact that once a fire gets a firm hold,
[14:56] Speaker 9: it's fed by drafts that rush.
[14:57] Speaker 4: Through the ventilating system.
[14:59] Speaker 9: And third there is the element of penn Nothing makes
[15:02] Speaker 9: people behave more like wild beasts quicker than the cry
[15:05] Speaker 9: of fire.
[15:06] Speaker 4: In case of fire, you have, of course an alarm system.
[15:09] Speaker 9: We have the old fashioned system of bells, and also
[15:12] Speaker 9: something rather recent. The Gigantic is one of the first
[15:15] Speaker 9: ships to install it. You see that glass case over there, gentlemen, they're.
[15:18] Speaker 6: Wrong with a lot of tubes entering from below. Looks
[15:21] Speaker 6: rather like a giant honeycomb, Mayholmes.
[15:23] Speaker 9: Each of those tubes leads to a separate compartment of
[15:26] Speaker 9: the ship. The instant of fire breaks out anywhere, smoke
[15:30] Speaker 9: is immediately drawn up into the glass case. I've stationed
[15:33] Speaker 9: a sailor to watch that case. Believe me, gentlemen, the
[15:35] Speaker 9: first wisp of smoke please will know it.
[15:38] Speaker 3: Yes, undoubtedly very helpful, Captain Brooks. In the case of
[15:40] Speaker 3: an ordinary conflagration, I assure you, a fire set by
[15:43] Speaker 3: Smoky Joe is not ordinary. He's a master arsonist. Ten
[15:47] Speaker 3: seconds after one of his fires breaks out, you're dealing
[15:49] Speaker 3: with a raging inferno.
[15:50] Speaker 9: Confounded, they tell me the man deserted the ship at Queenstown.
[15:53] Speaker 4: That us this morning.
[15:55] Speaker 9: Wow, that's more than eighteen hours ago. If he'd set fire,
[15:58] Speaker 9: it seems to me that we'd been flames by this time.
[16:01] Speaker 4: Not necessarily.
[16:02] Speaker 3: There are many methods by which a fire can be
[16:03] Speaker 3: made to break out long after the pyromaniac has left
[16:06] Speaker 3: the scene of his crime.
[16:07] Speaker 4: You say you've found no time bombs, no inflammable assets, no,
[16:10] Speaker 4: mister Holmes.
[16:11] Speaker 9: Ever since I received word that we were in danger,
[16:14] Speaker 9: I've had my men searching high and low. They found nothing,
[16:17] Speaker 9: absolutely nothing. It's been a systematic search, I promise you, Yes,
[16:21] Speaker 9: but you've drawn a blank. That's what comes of using
[16:23] Speaker 9: system instead of brains and initiative. Oh and how do
[16:26] Speaker 9: you propose to locate whatever it is we can't find?
[16:29] Speaker 4: By using a little logic?
[16:32] Speaker 3: I shall credit smokey Joe with having the intelligence to
[16:34] Speaker 3: place his fire starting device in the place where it
[16:37] Speaker 3: will do the most damage. The man's no amateur, Captain,
[16:39] Speaker 3: he knows his business. Then I shall investigate that place
[16:42] Speaker 3: and remove his handiwork.
[16:43] Speaker 6: Wooms, you're bagging again, and at all, my dear Watson.
[16:46] Speaker 3: I think I may promise I shall have discovered the
[16:48] Speaker 3: menace inside of half an hour. I only hope Joe's
[16:51] Speaker 3: little device doesn't do its nasty job before then.
[16:53] Speaker 4: Half an hour. It's now leven thirty.
[16:56] Speaker 9: Exactly do you think you can solve this problem by midnight?
[16:59] Speaker 3: Yes, captain, with an in luck, I think I can
[17:01] Speaker 3: promise you a placid and uneventful New year.
[17:04] Speaker 4: Captain, Brooks. Yes, mister Brown would seem to be the trouble.
[17:06] Speaker 8: The wireless engineer so wishes to report something's wrong with
[17:08] Speaker 8: the separators, both as sending and receiving equipment have suddenly
[17:11] Speaker 8: gone out of commission.
[17:12] Speaker 4: I don't like that. What does he think is? Can
[17:15] Speaker 4: you come here a minute? Excuse me a moment, gentlemen.
[17:17] Speaker 4: The wilsman is calling me. What the trouble, Jerry? It's
[17:20] Speaker 4: the compassay. It's spitting like a top. I can't figure
[17:22] Speaker 4: out what's got into it. Never see the light except
[17:24] Speaker 4: once in some magnetic storm. Scott, this is incredible, now heart.
[17:29] Speaker 4: It's the engine room calling Captain. I'll take it. Hello, Yes,
[17:33] Speaker 4: Captain brook speaking.
[17:37] Speaker 3: The places you say will do the best you can
[17:41] Speaker 3: seem to be the difficulty, Captain.
[17:42] Speaker 4: The dynamoes are slowing down. They can't figure out why.
[17:44] Speaker 3: Good Lord, sir, that's why the lights are getting dim
[17:47] Speaker 3: places were the lights Without dynamos, we've no false draft
[17:49] Speaker 3: for the furnaces.
[17:50] Speaker 4: We'll never keep up enough steam pressure to drive the ship.
[17:53] Speaker 9: In no time at all, we'll be drifting helplessly in
[17:55] Speaker 9: the Atlantic, in the middle of the reefs.
[17:57] Speaker 4: That's around the city Aisles and.
[17:58] Speaker 7: The only way to spend New Year.
[18:00] Speaker 4: It could be worse, you know how. The ship could
[18:02] Speaker 4: be on fire.
[18:03] Speaker 3: That's the real menace to which these other threats are,
[18:05] Speaker 3: but the prelude I fancy.
[18:06] Speaker 4: For the love of Heaven, what are we to do?
[18:08] Speaker 3: Keep calm and use whatever intelligence the Lord has endowed
[18:11] Speaker 3: us with, Captain Brooks, I suggest you and as many
[18:14] Speaker 3: officers as you can spare, join the holiday celebration that's
[18:17] Speaker 3: undoubtedly going on, in order to keep discipline in case
[18:19] Speaker 3: there's any disturbance.
[18:20] Speaker 4: Very good, mister Holmes. There's a New Year's dance going
[18:23] Speaker 4: on in the large ballroom. It's on sea deck.
[18:25] Speaker 3: And meanwhile, if you can spare us someone to guide
[18:27] Speaker 3: Watson and myself of course, And mister Brown here is
[18:29] Speaker 3: our purser.
[18:30] Speaker 4: He knows the ship as well as anyone on board.
[18:32] Speaker 4: I'm sure he does.
[18:33] Speaker 3: But well, mister Brown, if you'll lead the way, I
[18:34] Speaker 3: think Dr Watson and I would like to go below
[18:36] Speaker 3: and investigate the engines. No, mister Brown, even lower than that.
[18:40] Speaker 3: What we're looking for is that to be rather close
[18:42] Speaker 3: to the furnaces. I imagine.
[18:57] Speaker 7: All these and stares to go round and round to
[19:00] Speaker 7: make me dizzy. Maybe it's the heat down here.
[19:03] Speaker 8: Yes, we're getting close to the furnace room. If you
[19:06] Speaker 8: listen you can hear the men stocky.
[19:08] Speaker 7: Him way to a living homes.
[19:10] Speaker 3: Stop a minute, where does that mean, mister Brown? That
[19:13] Speaker 3: small corridor with a heavy metal door at the far end.
[19:16] Speaker 8: That's the bullying room though, where the gold is kept.
[19:19] Speaker 3: Very interesting course, we take a look, Gay Watson, and
[19:22] Speaker 3: I've always wanted to see those gold boss.
[19:25] Speaker 7: You hear so much about.
[19:26] Speaker 8: I'm afraid that won't be possible, doctor Watson.
[19:28] Speaker 7: Why not?
[19:29] Speaker 8: Well, as you can see, the door is locked and sealed.
[19:32] Speaker 8: It was done by the port authorities before we.
[19:34] Speaker 4: Left New York.
[19:35] Speaker 8: That door won't be opened until the port authority is
[19:38] Speaker 8: unsealed when we reach Southampton.
[19:40] Speaker 3: You mean that room in there wasn't opened when the
[19:41] Speaker 3: captain ordered the ship search for in the sendiory material.
[19:44] Speaker 8: No, mister Holmes, but it's quite impossible for you you
[19:47] Speaker 8: want to place a fire bomb or anything of the
[19:49] Speaker 8: sort in there.
[19:49] Speaker 4: As you can see, the seals are still intact. Quite
[19:52] Speaker 4: these seals are intact. But are they the ones put
[19:55] Speaker 4: on in New York? I doubt it.
[19:57] Speaker 3: It's hell a look, Yes, interesting very interesting. These are
[20:04] Speaker 3: not the original seals, or.
[20:05] Speaker 7: How can you tell? Holmes? They look in tech to.
[20:08] Speaker 3: Me exactly they are intact. But here in the crack
[20:11] Speaker 3: of the door sill are bits of broken seals. But
[20:13] Speaker 3: these seals are not even chipped by JERVI.
[20:16] Speaker 6: Yes, of course, the original seals were hacked off and
[20:19] Speaker 6: then replaced after someone had finished picking the lock and
[20:22] Speaker 6: robbing the room inside.
[20:23] Speaker 4: I doubt if robbery was the motive, Watson.
[20:25] Speaker 7: For what other reason would anyone want to break into
[20:27] Speaker 7: a room full.
[20:28] Speaker 4: Of gold bullion? It? All the pins? What lies directly
[20:31] Speaker 4: below that room? Mister Brown?
[20:32] Speaker 7: Well let me.
[20:33] Speaker 8: See nothing of any great importance, mister Holmes, just the
[20:37] Speaker 8: coal piles.
[20:38] Speaker 3: The coal piles. Good lord, I think we shall have
[20:40] Speaker 3: to break the seals again. Mister Brown, here wats and
[20:42] Speaker 3: help me.
[20:43] Speaker 8: But the door is locked, mister Holmes, sitting after seals
[20:46] Speaker 8: have been removed.
[20:47] Speaker 4: We's have to get the key from the captain. No
[20:49] Speaker 4: fine for that, hand me my burglar tools, Watson.
[20:51] Speaker 8: Very well, good Kevins, You mean you could actually pick
[20:54] Speaker 8: a lock with those things?
[20:56] Speaker 6: Homes ever turned thief, mister Brown, even the Bank of
[20:59] Speaker 6: England would miss.
[21:01] Speaker 4: Yes, that should do the trick now, if you'll help
[21:03] Speaker 4: me draw the bars.
[21:04] Speaker 6: Watson, Yes, with pleasure. You are homes now, let's see
[21:13] Speaker 6: said lacking There isn't it? Is there a light inside
[21:16] Speaker 6: mister Brown? No, mister Holmes, I'm afraid not. Then we
[21:19] Speaker 6: shall have to prop the door open. The light from
[21:21] Speaker 6: the corridor will have to do for our investigations. Come on, Watson, Holmes,
[21:24] Speaker 6: that's smell hue, strong and acrid.
[21:28] Speaker 7: Like sulfer, only with more bite.
[21:30] Speaker 4: Seems to be coming from this large tin. Suppose I
[21:33] Speaker 4: light a match is first up. Don't be alarmed.
[21:36] Speaker 3: I know better than the light of match around a
[21:37] Speaker 3: tin which is leaking south furlic acid. I only wanted
[21:40] Speaker 3: to know how much you knew about Smoky Joe's and
[21:42] Speaker 3: send your a device, Mister Ludwig Brown spelled b r
[21:46] Speaker 3: a U N if I'm not mistaken.
[21:48] Speaker 7: So you recognize me?
[21:50] Speaker 4: Yes, that dueling is car over your left eye rather
[21:52] Speaker 4: a giveaway, don't you know?
[21:53] Speaker 8: So you have found how we are going to set
[21:55] Speaker 8: fire to the ship by having the acid.
[21:57] Speaker 4: Dripped through a hole in the floor under the cold.
[22:00] Speaker 8: The first shovelful of that acid so coal that goes
[22:03] Speaker 8: in the furnace and the hold of a ship will
[22:06] Speaker 8: be a blazing inferno.
[22:07] Speaker 4: Nothing could put out that fire. Don't you mean that's
[22:10] Speaker 4: how you were going to stalk the fire?
[22:11] Speaker 8: My dear mister Holmes, you do not think we will
[22:14] Speaker 8: let a small obstacle like the famous Sherlock Holmes stand
[22:17] Speaker 8: in our way.
[22:17] Speaker 7: Listen to me, don't reach office to me.
[22:19] Speaker 4: I'll let you have it. Never argue with a local pistol, Watson.
[22:23] Speaker 8: That's the first sensible remark you've made, mister Holmes. I'm
[22:27] Speaker 8: sorry to leave, but these stokers should reach the sulfuric
[22:30] Speaker 8: acid impregnated coal in about ten minutes, I believe, so
[22:35] Speaker 8: I must be going. This room will be a roaring
[22:38] Speaker 8: oven once it starts. You will be rather badly overdone.
[22:42] Speaker 4: Gentlemen.
[22:44] Speaker 8: Goodbye then, so sorry, I cannot say I'll feed us in.
[22:51] Speaker 7: The door. He's bolted it. Even you can't open it.
[22:55] Speaker 4: Now, Homes, Shut up, Watson, and help me look for
[22:57] Speaker 4: the opening.
[22:57] Speaker 3: What opening, for heaven's sake, the opening the feats to
[23:00] Speaker 3: the tube that ends on the captain's new fire detecting machine.
[23:02] Speaker 4: It should be somewhere near the ceiling.
[23:04] Speaker 6: But at Homes, I can't see a thing in this
[23:05] Speaker 6: black hole of calcutter.
[23:07] Speaker 4: You can feel, can't you?
[23:24] Speaker 6: Not a thing homes the wall on this side of
[23:27] Speaker 6: the room. It's as smooth as an egg. Can't found
[23:29] Speaker 6: it if we could see for half a minute. Hullo,
[23:32] Speaker 6: I've got something there. He's a small grating here in
[23:34] Speaker 6: the upper corner.
[23:35] Speaker 4: This must be it.
[23:37] Speaker 3: Now, if we can make a smudge of some sort, Watson,
[23:39] Speaker 3: bring me a piece of paper.
[23:40] Speaker 7: Paper, whoever I find a piece of paper.
[23:42] Speaker 3: Then bring me anything I can burn, A bit of cloth,
[23:44] Speaker 3: a piece of yes, by jove, rope, bring me a
[23:46] Speaker 3: piece of the rope that's tied around one of the
[23:48] Speaker 3: boxes that contained the bullion.
[23:49] Speaker 7: Very well, if I can find a box that now
[23:52] Speaker 7: what I found? It? Found it? The knots are tight,
[23:57] Speaker 7: so tight.
[23:58] Speaker 4: Places with nuts cut the rope. What's utu? Your pocket knife?
[24:00] Speaker 8: Oh?
[24:01] Speaker 7: Very well, hey, our homes, it's a short length.
[24:08] Speaker 3: I'm afraid I only want enough for a smudge. Nothing
[24:10] Speaker 3: like a bit of hempen rope.
[24:12] Speaker 6: Toms, For heaven's sake, You're not going to set a
[24:14] Speaker 6: match to that thing in here.
[24:15] Speaker 7: There'll be an explosion.
[24:16] Speaker 3: Have to take the chance, Watson, with any luck of
[24:18] Speaker 3: sulfuric acid fumes won't be too concentrated up here, never ceiling. Well,
[24:23] Speaker 3: there goes one.
[24:27] Speaker 4: Two.
[24:30] Speaker 3: Now if we can persuade the rope to smolder, Yes,
[24:34] Speaker 3: there she goes.
[24:36] Speaker 7: Certainly makes plenty of smoke at homes.
[24:38] Speaker 4: Important thing, it's being drawn up through the grating.
[24:40] Speaker 7: How long before they come to investigate?
[24:42] Speaker 3: Do you suppose it all depends on the mental acumen
[24:44] Speaker 3: of a sailor who's watching that fire detecting machine.
[24:46] Speaker 7: Let's hope is brighter than he looks.
[24:49] Speaker 6: It may be my imagination, but it seems to me
[24:51] Speaker 6: I can feel the metal flooring under my feet beginning
[24:55] Speaker 6: to get hot.
[25:07] Speaker 3: Most things in nineteen forty eight will cost you a
[25:09] Speaker 3: great deal more than you've paid in other years. That's
[25:12] Speaker 3: why it's sensational news to know that you can get
[25:15] Speaker 3: clipper craft suits in nineteen forty eight for only forty
[25:18] Speaker 3: and forty five dollars, clipper craft top coats and overcoats
[25:22] Speaker 3: for only forty dollars, and sport jackets for only twenty
[25:25] Speaker 3: six fifty. And isn't it as good a time as
[25:28] Speaker 3: any to decide to get the most for your money.
[25:31] Speaker 3: You've every right to expect long wear, correct styling, good taste,
[25:35] Speaker 3: comfort and perfect fit. And you get all these to
[25:38] Speaker 3: an astounding degree in clipper Craft clothes, and you get
[25:42] Speaker 3: them at incredibly modest prices. It's, of course, American production
[25:47] Speaker 3: genius applied to the making of fine clothes that does
[25:50] Speaker 3: the trick. It's the unique clipper Craft Plan, concentrating the
[25:54] Speaker 3: buying power of nine hundred and twenty four of the
[25:56] Speaker 3: nation's leading independent stores from coast to coats. You get
[26:01] Speaker 3: the benefit of this plan at your own locally owned store.
[26:04] Speaker 3: The store you can trust selling expensive clothes at inexpensive
[26:09] Speaker 3: low prices at the nation's finest independent stores is the great,
[26:13] Speaker 3: big Iita behind the Clippercraft Plan. That's why men who
[26:17] Speaker 3: know insist on clipper Craft clothes. So be sure to
[26:21] Speaker 3: visit the clipper Craft store in your city.
[26:24] Speaker 10: These leading stores in the metropolitan area are proud to
[26:27] Speaker 10: add their names to Clippercraft and your Suit, top code
[26:29] Speaker 10: and overcoat. In Manhattan, Sacks thirty fourth Broadway at thirty fourth,
[26:34] Speaker 10: John Wallamaker Men's Stores Broadway at eighth and sixty seven
[26:37] Speaker 10: Liberty Street in Brooklyn, Abraham and Strauss in Newark, New Jersey.
[26:42] Speaker 10: Boulevard Men's Shop Creskey, Newark, and in Jamaica the B
[26:46] Speaker 10: and B Clothes Shop, one sixty four oh eight, Jamaica Avenue.
[26:55] Speaker 3: Now let's rejoin Sherlock Holmes and doctor Watson locked in
[26:58] Speaker 3: the smoke filled boulon of the gig Attic.
[27:05] Speaker 7: Good lord, how long does it take for them to
[27:10] Speaker 7: get us out of here? That smoke suffocating?
[27:13] Speaker 4: Calm yourself, Watson. It can't be more than three minutes
[27:15] Speaker 4: since we looked this much. Yes, I can hear someone
[27:17] Speaker 4: running down the iron steaking.
[27:19] Speaker 7: I can't hear a blasted thing. How do you and
[27:25] Speaker 7: I'm there? Get us out?
[27:27] Speaker 4: We're in here? Open the door?
[27:33] Speaker 7: What a relief?
[27:34] Speaker 4: How some of did you two get locked in here?
[27:37] Speaker 4: What's all the smoke? And no time for explanations? Captain?
[27:40] Speaker 3: Stop them stucking the furnaces. Flood the coal piles with water.
[27:42] Speaker 3: They've been soaked with sulfuric acid. Good lord, he.
[27:46] Speaker 4: Gees, stop the firing.
[27:48] Speaker 9: Stop the bums in the engine room.
[27:51] Speaker 6: Well that's that comes. What do you suppose have they
[27:56] Speaker 6: come of that dast to depasser?
[27:58] Speaker 4: We let Captain Brooks take care of him, Watson.
[28:00] Speaker 3: Unless I'm very much mistaken, mister Brown, is going to
[28:03] Speaker 3: wish he'd never gone to sea. Well, come along, let's
[28:06] Speaker 3: go upstairs and join the festivities. I think we rate
[28:08] Speaker 3: a bottle of champagne, which.
[28:09] Speaker 6: Blazes with this champagne? I need a double brandy eight
[28:19] Speaker 6: bells and let's see that would be.
[28:21] Speaker 4: Good night Watson, Happy New Year, old fellow.
[28:24] Speaker 6: Happy in your homes and many of them. But don't
[28:27] Speaker 6: you think you could manage to have them not quite
[28:29] Speaker 6: so hair raising.
[28:31] Speaker 3: And have you getting fat and lethargic. You know that
[28:33] Speaker 3: would be unhealthy, not to say boring.
[28:36] Speaker 6: Oh so now it's for my sake we indulge in
[28:38] Speaker 6: all these horrendous escapades.
[28:40] Speaker 7: Eh, find it of logic?
[28:41] Speaker 4: That is elementary, my dear Watson. Elementary. But here's the ballroom.
[28:49] Speaker 4: Suppose we joined the party side, my dearie.
[28:58] Speaker 3: We well, doctor Watson, that was an exciting way to
[29:16] Speaker 3: spend New Year's Eve.
[29:17] Speaker 7: He was a bit too exciting, mister Harris, if you.
[29:19] Speaker 4: Ask me, doctor, did they catch the purser?
[29:21] Speaker 6: Oh they did indeed, mister Brown and five of his
[29:24] Speaker 6: accompasses were thrown in the brig. That was the end
[29:27] Speaker 6: of the disasters in the British Maritime Service.
[29:29] Speaker 3: When at Holmes first suspect the purser was the villain
[29:32] Speaker 3: of the piece, when he came out.
[29:33] Speaker 6: Of the bridge and threw his overcoat on a chair
[29:35] Speaker 6: near to the compass, where whereupon the compass went burserk,
[29:38] Speaker 6: who was immediately suspected the code contained a powerful.
[29:41] Speaker 7: Magnet of some sort.
[29:43] Speaker 4: And was he right?
[29:44] Speaker 7: Doctor, My dear mister Harris, was Sherlock Holmes have a wrong?
[29:48] Speaker 7: But come fill your.
[29:50] Speaker 6: Lug and let us wish our radio friends are prosperous,
[29:53] Speaker 6: happy and peaceful.
[29:55] Speaker 3: Indeed we do, doctor, And now doctor Watson, would you
[29:58] Speaker 3: like to give us a hint about next week's story?
[30:00] Speaker 6: Next week, I think I'll tell you how Holmes and
[30:03] Speaker 6: I tapped a famous Jothy for writing our own rooms
[30:06] Speaker 6: in Baker Street by the use of what was then
[30:09] Speaker 6: a fabulous new invention, the gramophone.
[30:19] Speaker 3: The makers of Clippercraft Clothes and nine hundred twenty four
[30:23] Speaker 3: leading stores from coast to coast have brought you another
[30:26] Speaker 3: in the new series of broadcasts featuring the world's most
[30:29] Speaker 3: famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is produced and directed
[30:37] Speaker 3: by Basil Lockren, with special music by Albert Berman. If
[30:44] Speaker 3: you don't know your clippercraft dealer. Write Clippercraft two hundred
[30:48] Speaker 3: Fifth Avenue, New York City. Be sure to listen next
[30:52] Speaker 3: week to Sherlock Holmes in the Mazarin Stone. If you'd
[30:58] Speaker 3: like to attend the Sherlock Holmes podcast to New York,
[31:01] Speaker 3: see your local clippercraft dealer and he'll tell you how
[31:04] Speaker 3: to obtain your tickets.
[31:14] Speaker 4: Lasi Harris meased for Clippercraft. Those for an espect.
[31:17] Speaker 3: When you know, a happy and prostible gibe of all
[31:20] Speaker 3: about the hippers back because of the World Fives network
[31:22] Speaker 3: churning more than four hundred and fifty radio stations, but
[31:25] Speaker 3: did pore.
[31:25] Speaker 2: Block gaping welcome back. It was kind of odd to
[31:30] Speaker 2: hear Sherlock Holmes wanting to have New Year's Eve dinner
[31:35] Speaker 2: rather than go out on a problem. It's worth noting
[31:39] Speaker 2: here that, of course, this episode was set in nineteen twelve,
[31:44] Speaker 2: towards the tail end of the Holmes era. His very
[31:49] Speaker 2: last Adventure was set in nineteen fourteen. I do think
[31:53] Speaker 2: this episode could have used a better, maybe more descriptive title.
[31:57] Speaker 2: It really did not convey that we are going to
[32:01] Speaker 2: be in a race against time to save the ship
[32:07] Speaker 2: and the English Economy title, soended a whole lot more
[32:10] Speaker 2: light hearted than that. Well, we turned out at a
[32:12] Speaker 2: listener comments and feedback and uh just a nice keep
[32:17] Speaker 2: up the good work. Well, thank you for your Econo marks.
[32:21] Speaker 2: That will do it for today and next week we
[32:25] Speaker 2: return to regular order with our next episode of Sherlock Holmes.
[32:30] Speaker 2: Join us tomorrow for yours truly, Johnny Doller. In the meanwhile,
[32:34] Speaker 2: send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Attackers dot net,
[32:37] Speaker 2: follow us on Twitter at Radio Attactors, and give us
[32:40] Speaker 2: a call two eight nine nine one four seven eight three.
[32:44] Speaker 2: But from Boise, Idaho, this is your host, Adam Grahamson
[32:48] Speaker 2: and off
