[1:18] Speaker 2: June 16th, 1952, A recording that has a few quality problems,
[1:29] Speaker 2: but still listenable to. It's the Lila Hunter murder case.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Broadway's my beat.
[1:43] Speaker 3: The exciting drama of people who walk the great white way.
[1:46] Speaker 3: With Larry Thor as Detective Danny Korber. There comes a
[2:00] Speaker 3: time on Broadway, a little known time, when night takes
[2:03] Speaker 3: its hour to die. When neon buzzes fruitfully, dies. When
[2:07] Speaker 3: the spectaculars start their final circus. When the features turn
[2:11] Speaker 3: a corner.
[2:11] Speaker 1: Go away.
[2:13] Speaker 3: Lonely time and limbo when the street is layered with
[2:15] Speaker 3: the imagined echoes of a scream. So water and feeling,
[2:19] Speaker 3: the ending of something or another. And Broadway's clock spins fast.
[2:30] Speaker 3: And east now, walk it toward the river and its
[2:33] Speaker 3: special night sounds and smells and its curve of waning moon.
[2:37] Speaker 3: Stop and consider this thing.
[2:40] Speaker 1: All right, boys, put it down.
[2:44] Speaker 3: It looks like this girl's been in the river more
[2:46] Speaker 3: than a couple of hours, Danny. I'd say about a day.
[2:50] Speaker 3: Hold that light still once in a while.
[2:52] Speaker 1: I'm a little damp.
[2:53] Speaker 3: I'd like a cigarette.
[2:54] Speaker 1: Hold the light. Yes. Oh, jeez. Here, back to her neck.
[2:58] Speaker 3: Could have hit something out there, a log, anything.
[3:01] Speaker 1: Maybe. Sure, pretty good.
[3:03] Speaker 3: Very nice feature. Hold that light still. Just try it, Mark.
[3:06] Speaker 3: Let me see what kind of a reaction you get.
[3:10] Speaker 3: Lila Hunter.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Yeah. No mistake about it.
[3:13] Speaker 3: No mistake, Mark. I'm Lila Hunter, all right.
[3:15] Speaker 1: In the river? How do you figure? I asked you something, Danny.
[3:19] Speaker 3: The whole police force is out looking for her for
[3:21] Speaker 3: suspicion of murder.
[3:22] Speaker 1: She's in the river. How do you figure?
[3:23] Speaker 3: Good question, Mark.
[3:24] Speaker 1: It's got to get answered. Yeah.
[3:25] Speaker 3: Yeah. Hey, you want me to wait here for Texas?
[3:28] Speaker 1: Sure, I'll wait.
[3:30] Speaker 3: So river and the end of night with swirls of
[3:35] Speaker 3: mist and on the wind the cry deep in the
[3:37] Speaker 3: steamer's throat. The muted splash of oil-flicked waters, the musty
[3:42] Speaker 3: odors of night-ridden waterfront and the chill gleam of dimming
[3:45] Speaker 3: reflections and dark shadows and alley shadows gathered at this
[3:49] Speaker 3: moment at the edge of night. Veiled in mist, summoned
[3:52] Speaker 3: by the girl who had stepped away a.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Part of her dying in river tempest.
[3:55] Speaker 3: And this is a June pastoral at the end of night.
[3:59] Speaker 3: Wait with it a while. Give it into the hands
[4:06] Speaker 3: of the official handlers of the dead.
[4:09] Speaker 1: Leave it.
[4:10] Speaker 3: And then a cot in a squadron at headquarters sleep
[4:12] Speaker 3: until daylight strikes you between the eyes. And wait with
[4:15] Speaker 3: the emptiness still heavy on your back. Walk a corridor
[4:19] Speaker 3: to your office. The door that opens into another day.
[4:23] Speaker 3: I kept it hot for you, Danny.
[4:25] Speaker 1: Oh, thanks, Bill.
[4:27] Speaker 3: I rented the use of technician Gordon's Benson burner.
[4:30] Speaker 1: Rent it? So he charged me a dime. When I
[4:33] Speaker 1: explained it to him that it was your coffee I
[4:35] Speaker 1: was keeping hot, he wanted to up the hype.
[4:38] Speaker 3: I sneered on him. He oft-closed the top tightly with
[4:41] Speaker 3: a sneer. Did break Gordon's back down for a dime.
[4:44] Speaker 1: Here, Danny. Partake.
[4:46] Speaker 3: Hot coffee and a budget cinnamon bun.
[4:48] Speaker 1: Thanks. Do you know.
[4:49] Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
[4:49] Speaker 1: Here. What did it say? Forget it, Ben.
[4:52] Speaker 3: Forget it. Some other time you'll serve me breakfast and
[4:55] Speaker 3: burgers as well.
[4:56] Speaker 1: For free.
[4:57] Speaker 3: We have matters of more import to discuss, Benny.
[5:00] Speaker 1: You and I. What have you fixed? Your money is
[5:03] Speaker 1: in my hands, Benny. First. An entity seized by a hunter. Hmm?
[5:07] Speaker 1: What about her?
[5:07] Speaker 3: The diagnosis that she had been in the river, maybe
[5:10] Speaker 3: a bay, has been confirmed by our good Dr.
[5:12] Speaker 1: Finchley.
[5:12] Speaker 3: And the bull's back of her neck? In the opinion
[5:14] Speaker 3: of the good doctor, could have come from a short
[5:16] Speaker 3: he was intending to.
[5:17] Speaker 1: Kill by drowning.
[5:18] Speaker 3: Could also have come from a hidden piling or a
[5:21] Speaker 3: piece of flotsam or a.
[5:23] Speaker 1: All right. What else? What else is the.
[5:26] Speaker 3: Meant to murder he is suspected of committing? The rich
[5:28] Speaker 3: old point bulletins were issued on her.
[5:30] Speaker 1: Friendhood, she was a fugitive.
[5:32] Speaker 3: You bring me the rundown, huh?
[5:33] Speaker 1: I found a note on my desk this.
[5:35] Speaker 3: Morning where you left it, Danny, and I have brought
[5:37] Speaker 3: you the rundown.
[5:38] Speaker 1: Hmm?
[5:38] Speaker 3: Per your request, per a thought, Lila Hunter wanted for
[5:42] Speaker 3: the murder of Marty Scott. Marty Scott suspected and wanted
[5:46] Speaker 3: for a recent bank robbery upstate, meddling 40 grand. Then
[5:50] Speaker 3: found shot to death in Lila Hunter's apartment two nights ago.
[5:52] Speaker 3: It was a bad sight.
[5:54] Speaker 1: Lila, no thanks at all. You care also for a
[5:57] Speaker 1: resume with a rundown from technical manning?
[5:59] Speaker 4: No, I care for it.
[6:01] Speaker 3: Marty Scott murdered with Lila Hunter's gun. Gun found later
[6:05] Speaker 3: the night of his killing in an alley trash can.
[6:07] Speaker 3: Checked by our boys, then by ballistics. Gun was licensed
[6:10] Speaker 3: to Lila Hunter. Bullets and guns killed Marty. Time established
[6:15] Speaker 3: as 5.36 of the.
[6:16] Speaker 1: Hey, you, you!
[6:18] Speaker 3: A knocking is considered proper... You told me you were
[6:21] Speaker 3: the one to see about Lila.
[6:22] Speaker 1: Then... Please.
[6:25] Speaker 3: Told me you were in charge of her death. They
[6:28] Speaker 3: told me you woke her from the river.
[6:30] Speaker 1: Who are you? Tommy Hamilton. Memory of a man. Memory
[6:35] Speaker 1: of a poet. Wino.
[6:37] Speaker 3: Skidrow bum. Wino was nice to me once. I drank
[6:42] Speaker 3: the dregs from a glass of wine he shipped.
[6:45] Speaker 1: Here. Five hundred dollars. Take it. For what?
[6:51] Speaker 3: For the burial of a child that once was. With
[6:54] Speaker 3: a wrapping in her survival. And a stone and a
[6:58] Speaker 3: blood-red rose on her grave. Lana deserves more than Potterfield.
[7:04] Speaker 3: I buy it for her. I mention I buy nice
[7:07] Speaker 3: things for the bet. Where'd you get it, a man
[7:09] Speaker 3: like you? Where do you get it, Simon? Mine to give.
[7:12] Speaker 3: Where'd you get it from? I left out a friend.
[7:17] Speaker 3: Tommy Hamilton, also Baker. I begged and a kindly man
[7:21] Speaker 3: threw it to me.
[7:22] Speaker 1: Who? Kindly man.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Walks, he blows, nods, smiles, listens. Throws money in the gutter.
[7:30] Speaker 3: Smiles on his ground short. Very kindly. Tell me who
[7:34] Speaker 3: he is. Who gave a beggar $ 500? Reflection of a man.
[7:38] Speaker 1: Mike Ryan.
[7:40] Speaker 3: Now, about Lila. I want Lila to have the nice
[7:44] Speaker 3: things of death.
[7:45] Speaker 1: All the little luxuries of perfume. Another question, Tommy.
[7:50] Speaker 3: How does a man like you know a woman like Lionel?
[7:52] Speaker 3: I told you. You didn't know her, did you?
[7:57] Speaker 1: No. No. No.
[7:59] Speaker 3: That night Brian sent you here with that money?
[8:01] Speaker 1: Yeah. I run errands for him sometimes. This was the night.
[8:07] Speaker 3: Hold him, Gino, until I talk with a kindly man.
[8:10] Speaker 5: The End.
[8:33] Speaker 1: Hello, Danny. Hi, Mike. How are you? Come in, come in.
[8:38] Speaker 1: Sit down. This is Selena, a friend. Danny Klober, dear.
[8:44] Speaker 1: How do you do? Mix us some drinks.
[8:47] Speaker 3: Nothing to mean. Selena doesn't drink either.
[8:49] Speaker 1: Just one for me, dear.
[8:52] Speaker 3: It's about Lila Hunter.
[8:53] Speaker 1: I know. I'm sorry about Lila to drown like that.
[8:56] Speaker 3: And it's about Marty Scott, too.
[8:58] Speaker 1: I don't feel anything about him.
[8:59] Speaker 3: Dead, alive, picked away from the bay.
[9:02] Speaker 1: I get nothing at all. Do you think that... Thanks, dear.
[9:07] Speaker 3: What did you say, Danny? Do you think Marty's death, Lila.
[9:09] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I do.
[9:10] Speaker 3: A link between them.
[9:11] Speaker 1: Sure. How?
[9:12] Speaker 3: I don't know that, Danny. Haven't thought about it. Want
[9:14] Speaker 3: me to think about it and.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Let you know? I'll do it. Be glad to.
[9:17] Speaker 3: You were questioned about Marty's death, Mike, weren't you?
[9:20] Speaker 1: You know that. Felina, dear. Yes, like that. Thank you.
[9:27] Speaker 1: He used to work for you. Once I had a history, Danny.
[9:30] Speaker 1: Long time ago.
[9:31] Speaker 3: No police record, but a history. Police didn't like me.
[9:34] Speaker 3: Shook me down, made pledges what they would do to me.
[9:36] Speaker 3: But I never went to jail. Danny.
[9:39] Speaker 1: Denny, you know what I do now.
[9:41] Speaker 3: I raise sewers for housing projects.
[9:43] Speaker 1: I know all about them.
[9:45] Speaker 3: Just talk to me about Marty Stratter once. Once when
[9:47] Speaker 3: the police didn't like me, Marty used to run down
[9:50] Speaker 3: to the corner and get me the three papers I
[9:52] Speaker 3: like to read. And now no connection?
[9:54] Speaker 1: None. Danny, you robbed the bank last week. What connection?
[9:59] Speaker 3: Just left to employ and struck out for himself.
[10:01] Speaker 1: Well, it's pleasant here.
[10:03] Speaker 3: Music, dark wood furniture, drapes, Selena.
[10:07] Speaker 1: Quiet talk. Don't come into my place, Danny.
[10:09] Speaker 3: Make suggestions to me like that. Take me down to headquarters,
[10:12] Speaker 3: do whatever you like.
[10:13] Speaker 1: Not here. Danny. Huh?
[10:17] Speaker 3: You were doing very well. I was going to make
[10:20] Speaker 3: a suggestion. All of us here would be nice, sir.
[10:23] Speaker 1: But, Selina, dear.
[10:24] Speaker 3: Try it this way, Mike. The man came in from
[10:27] Speaker 3: Skid Row. He had $ 500.
[10:28] Speaker 1: Never mind, dear.
[10:29] Speaker 5: Sorry, Danny.
[10:33] Speaker 3: Go on. $ 500 for a funeral. You want me to
[10:35] Speaker 3: deny it or tell me about it? Before Selina, it
[10:39] Speaker 3: was Lila. Your sentimental man.
[10:41] Speaker 1: That's right.
[10:42] Speaker 3: I wanted to pay for Lila's funeral. I didn't want
[10:45] Speaker 3: to scream about it. It appears I was in it.
[10:47] Speaker 3: Before Selina, there was Lila. And to Lila, after you,
[10:50] Speaker 3: there was Marty Scott.
[10:52] Speaker 1: Is that who it was? Yes.
[10:54] Speaker 3: I told Lila Marty was nothing.
[10:56] Speaker 1: She wouldn't listen.
[10:57] Speaker 3: When was the last time you spoke to Lila?
[10:59] Speaker 1: Recently.
[11:00] Speaker 3: The night Marty was killed, come to think of it.
[11:02] Speaker 3: He called me from a place he vistas. It turned
[11:05] Speaker 3: out to be a Skid Row hotel. You saw her there?
[11:07] Speaker 1: No, no. He told me what it was. That she
[11:10] Speaker 1: was in trouble. That she needed money.
[11:12] Speaker 3: Said she'd registered under the name of some fictitious name.
[11:15] Speaker 1: Molly. Molly Drew, I think. No, I didn't go to her.
[11:19] Speaker 1: I'd made a.
[11:19] Speaker 3: Prediction to her what would happen if she played with Marty.
[11:22] Speaker 1: It had happened. I reminded her of it and hung up.
[11:26] Speaker 1: The place was called Victor's, Danny. Perhaps you'll find out
[11:29] Speaker 1: something there. Let me know. Yes, Janina. Yes, dear.
[11:49] Speaker 3: Ah, this is the day that it is.
[11:51] Speaker 6: A policeman looking for a girl lost in the pages
[11:53] Speaker 6: of my hotel register. How many years back do you want, mister?
[11:57] Speaker 6: I haven't piled the stacks in my room. Tomorrow's girls,
[12:00] Speaker 6: I could write their names myself for you.
[12:02] Speaker 1: Well, what's the treasure, mister? This one.
[12:05] Speaker 3: Molly Drew.
[12:06] Speaker 1: Ah, that one, huh? Nice.
[12:09] Speaker 6: Ah, you wouldn't have liked her anyway.
[12:11] Speaker 1: She's a flitter.
[12:12] Speaker 6: I looked in on her this morning and she flitted away.
[12:15] Speaker 6: That's how it is with you, huh, mister?
[12:18] Speaker 3: Repair her name out of my books. And the others
[12:20] Speaker 3: in the pubs, they tore my name. Show me the room,
[12:23] Speaker 3: she asked.
[12:24] Speaker 1: Oh, sure.
[12:25] Speaker 6: I'll show you the room where Molly Drew slept or
[12:27] Speaker 6: was awake.
[12:28] Speaker 3: Myself, I couldn't tell you this. Well, come on along.
[12:30] Speaker 3: There seems to be her still around.
[12:33] Speaker 1: I ain't had time to clean.
[12:34] Speaker 3: You couldn't find her, Mr. Mr. Dredd, how much?
[12:39] Speaker 7: Well, I'll leave you alone with it. Of course, I
[12:42] Speaker 7: know how it is.
[13:07] Speaker 3: Hmm. Fathomberry. Initial O-H. It's just a man.
[13:20] Speaker 1: All right, all right.
[13:22] Speaker 5: The fluttering of words, the swift flurry and epic sound
[13:32] Speaker 5: of the river, the state of shock.
[13:35] Speaker 3: Then silence, the mushroom, the pain, the ham's moisture pushing
[13:39] Speaker 3: it back. Nothing left.
[13:43] Speaker 4: Nothing at.
[13:55] Speaker 1: All. What can you do with six cents? Not much?
[14:00] Speaker 1: Don't you believe it.
[14:02] Speaker 3: Because for six cents a year, you, as an American taxpayer,
[14:06] Speaker 3: are helping to provide medical care and nutrition to the
[14:09] Speaker 3: underprivileged children of the world. You are doing this through UNICEF,
[14:14] Speaker 3: the United Nations Children's Fund. Created by the General Assembly
[14:18] Speaker 3: of the United Nations in 1946, it did such fine
[14:22] Speaker 3: work in helping the children in war-devastated countries that in 1950,
[14:26] Speaker 3: it was decided to shift the emphasis from emergency relief
[14:30] Speaker 3: to continuing aid for the world's children, particularly in underdeveloped countries.
[14:35] Speaker 3: Through its maternal and child welfare services, its mass health programs,
[14:40] Speaker 3: and its child nutrition programs, it is making this world
[14:43] Speaker 3: a better place to live in for millions of children.
[14:47] Speaker 3: You are a part of the great work being done
[14:50] Speaker 3: by this special body of the United Nations... And it
[14:53] Speaker 3: costs you only six.
[14:54] Speaker 1: Cents a year.
[15:07] Speaker 3: The night music of June can't stay bad at loudspeakers.
[15:10] Speaker 3: Slows gently down Broadway. And the languorous early summer is cadence.
[15:14] Speaker 1: To the rhythm of blues. And the crazy.
[15:16] Speaker 3: Songs from the porch-a-bongs that were already dim in the 20s.
[15:20] Speaker 3: The ladies of the Spectacular sway gracefully on.
[15:22] Speaker 1: The Nazca beaches.
[15:23] Speaker 3: The time is flashed at electronic intervals. And the hawkers
[15:28] Speaker 3: and the gimmick boys drone their wares. June on brothel. Peanuts, popcorn,
[15:34] Speaker 3: and mannequins dressed as dimes. And the room where I was.
[15:42] Speaker 3: The hospital room. The quiet voice is muted to the
[15:45] Speaker 3: drifting night.
[15:45] Speaker 1: Don't look so at me. Needle to pay. Danny will
[15:48] Speaker 1: be all right. I'll give you my word on it.
[15:50] Speaker 1: Easy for you to say. You're a doctor. You don't
[15:53] Speaker 1: teach such things to say in school. It's a whole
[15:56] Speaker 1: study that you should say to the.
[15:57] Speaker 3: Friends of friends with bullet holes.
[15:59] Speaker 1: Oh, Gene, I... You haven't been fully understood between us, Dr. Sinske.
[16:02] Speaker 1: That with me, you don't have to schmooze. With me,
[16:05] Speaker 1: you can come right out and.
[16:06] Speaker 3: You know, the doctor's telling me it's true.
[16:09] Speaker 1: Good. I'll be all right. I'll go call Mrs.
[16:11] Speaker 5: Santaglia.
[16:12] Speaker 3: She's waiting.
[16:13] Speaker 1: Hold it, please.
[16:14] Speaker 3: But no, Gene. Damn it.
[16:16] Speaker 1: I'm the doctor, huh? Sir. In this room, this is
[16:19] Speaker 1: my province.
[16:19] Speaker 3: In here, I give the orders, huh?
[16:21] Speaker 1: So lie back and waste no strength, huh?
[16:23] Speaker 3: You need to feel them, but what's left for you?
[16:25] Speaker 1: That's bad about it. Fractured shoulder, toe.
[16:29] Speaker 3: And I speak nothing of shock? This is my province,
[16:32] Speaker 3: where there is pain and shock.
[16:34] Speaker 1: You wish something of me, Manny? A drink of water?
[16:37] Speaker 1: I should read to you, maybe?
[16:39] Speaker 3: What page are you talking about, Colonel Register? Hand-wrapping experts
[16:44] Speaker 3: have gone over it, Danny.
[16:45] Speaker 1: The name Molly Drew was.
[16:46] Speaker 3: Written by the hand of the deceased Lalo. The bag
[16:49] Speaker 3: I found in my room. At your disposal, in technical name.
[16:52] Speaker 1: No money in it.
[16:54] Speaker 3: No money from the bank robbery performed by Marty Scott
[16:57] Speaker 3: or so deceased.
[16:57] Speaker 1: By the end of that long time.
[17:00] Speaker 3: A woman, an old-time American, Mr.
[17:01] Speaker 1: Victor. I have a question. I want to know.
[17:04] Speaker 3: It'll keep, Danny. I promise you, it'll keep. All right,
[17:08] Speaker 3: I brought you something.
[17:10] Speaker 1: A needle.
[17:11] Speaker 3: Guaranteed to bring sleep to the.
[17:12] Speaker 1: Rest of us. It'll sting a little, Danny.
[17:27] Speaker 3: And four days in the hospital. A novel read, Jim
[17:30] Speaker 3: Remy with Nurse Popeless and Chocolate-Covered Cherries and the Fellas
[17:34] Speaker 3: in Homicide. Completed a note from Officer Robert, for instance.
[17:38] Speaker 1: As Bob Hayworth, a fun-loving sleuth.
[17:41] Speaker 3: And visits from Sergeant and Mississa Plaguer and Beatles in
[17:44] Speaker 3: brown paper bags. Ask the reporters who brought message that
[17:48] Speaker 3: ate chocolate-covered cherries and Beatles. Examinations and bondage changes, solitaire
[17:54] Speaker 3: and boredom, and most hopelessly, some I always had two
[17:57] Speaker 3: and I knocked with one. Four days in the hospital.
[18:00] Speaker 3: And on the fifth morning, get up, get out of there.
[18:03] Speaker 3: Back to work, check in, phone calls, have nothing to
[18:06] Speaker 3: bring in Mrs. Victor, proprietor of Victor's own Skid Row.
[18:08] Speaker 1: Talk to her.
[18:10] Speaker 3: I don't know what you want to talk to me about.
[18:11] Speaker 3: But the police have been blocking you about for four days, Mrs.
[18:14] Speaker 1: Victor. Should I hurt you?
[18:15] Speaker 3: Don't say something like that.
[18:17] Speaker 6: I've got a bum shoulder myself.
[18:18] Speaker 3: Don't hurt much when it rains.
[18:19] Speaker 6: Hold it when the sun is enlightened.
[18:21] Speaker 1: Watch out.
[18:22] Speaker 6: Climb under the bed and watch out.
[18:24] Speaker 3: Got a cigarette?
[18:25] Speaker 1: Here.
[18:26] Speaker 3: Have one of mine, Mrs.
[18:27] Speaker 1: Victor. You want a light?
[18:29] Speaker 3: I ain't going to chew on it.
[18:31] Speaker 6: Sure I want a light.
[18:33] Speaker 5: Yes.
[18:35] Speaker 1: Who shot me, Mrs. Victor?
[18:37] Speaker 3: You've been in the hospital.
[18:38] Speaker 6: You don't know what I've been telling them cops, do you?
[18:40] Speaker 3: No, I don't.
[18:41] Speaker 1: Boy, I was as surprised as you.
[18:43] Speaker 6: Was when you got shot. The lady up in 2-1-2
[18:45] Speaker 6: screamed down the hall.
[18:47] Speaker 3: Her feet were blown.
[18:48] Speaker 6: So I was on the second floor.
[18:49] Speaker 3: With Jesus when I heard black, black, black feet up.
[18:53] Speaker 1: Who was the lady?
[18:53] Speaker 3: I checked out there in a trench with no baggage.
[18:56] Speaker 1: According to Mrs. Victor. Sure, according to me.
[18:59] Speaker 3: If you can't believe me, who are you going to
[19:00] Speaker 3: believe in this world? Let's talk about Lila Hunter.
[19:03] Speaker 1: Who?
[19:04] Speaker 3: Lila Hunter, you know who he means. The girl who
[19:06] Speaker 3: registered as Molly Drew.
[19:07] Speaker 1: Oh, Flitter. I could tell. I tried, Peaky.
[19:09] Speaker 3: Do you understand something, Mrs. Victor? Do you understand we're
[19:12] Speaker 3: trying to solve a federal murder and you're right in the.
[19:15] Speaker 1: Middle of it?
[19:15] Speaker 6: That Lila. That Molly, whoever she was.
[19:18] Speaker 1: That Flitter.
[19:18] Speaker 3: That's true that she was found dead. She'd been dead
[19:20] Speaker 3: for a day when she was found.
[19:22] Speaker 1: Now.
[19:22] Speaker 3: Think about it. Did she have any visitors last November?
[19:25] Speaker 1: I couldn't say.
[19:25] Speaker 3: But you must have read in the papers that she
[19:27] Speaker 3: was wanted for murder, didn't you?
[19:28] Speaker 1: Literature.
[19:29] Speaker 6: No paper said no Molly Drew was wanted for nothing. Now,
[19:33] Speaker 6: let me tell you one thing right now.
[19:35] Speaker 3: What do you want, Gina? That robbery, Marty Scott was
[19:37] Speaker 3: mixed up in.
[19:38] Speaker 1: Some of the dough turned up. Holding a guy in
[19:40] Speaker 1: the Harlem precinct.
[19:41] Speaker 3: He tried to make a deposit at the Ruxton National
[19:43] Speaker 3: Bank on the Huntington's Exhibition Street. Trashier called it, called out.
[19:47] Speaker 3: Keep talking to Mrs.
[19:49] Speaker 1: Victor, Mark. Yes, sir. Do you know.
[19:50] Speaker 3: Squad car's waiting, Danny.
[19:52] Speaker 4: What's your name?
[20:06] Speaker 1: Rimpalma. Rimpalma. Why do you hold me here in jail?
[20:10] Speaker 3: How do you do for a living?
[20:11] Speaker 1: I have a travel agency for Trans-Mexico. Airplane. I am
[20:15] Speaker 1: an agent.
[20:15] Speaker 3: And what money was transferred to your agency?
[20:19] Speaker 1: I tell him, I tell you, I tell everybody.
[20:21] Speaker 3: Who do you want me to tell now?
[20:23] Speaker 1: I tell. Which is money?
[20:28] Speaker 3: You know who you sold the tickets to?
[20:34] Speaker 1: I remember. I remember very good. To Mrs. Jones for
[20:37] Speaker 1: her and her husband to.
[20:38] Speaker 3: Take a trip to Mexico. How long ago was that?
[20:43] Speaker 3: I remember all of it.
[20:46] Speaker 1: Three $ 100 bills, $ 150 bills, brand new. Sure, I remember.
[20:49] Speaker 3: Her name was Mrs.
[20:50] Speaker 1: Jones. One way to Mexico for her and her husband.
[20:53] Speaker 1: Five o'clock plane, new bill. Did Mrs.
[20:56] Speaker 3: Jones make the plane? No.
[20:58] Speaker 1: The air force calls to me on the telephone. They say,
[21:00] Speaker 1: where are Mr. and Mrs. Young? I shrug to them.
[21:04] Speaker 3: How can you judge the price of English money, Rico?
[21:06] Speaker 1: Two times a month at the post-it. At the beginning
[21:09] Speaker 1: and at the middle.
[21:10] Speaker 3: Just one more thing.
[21:12] Speaker 1: Mr. Jones. No more, sir. Very beautiful.
[21:16] Speaker 3: Blonde, but by far blonde. Simple shoulder, like a little
[21:20] Speaker 3: black mark here on the cheek.
[21:23] Speaker 1: That one I don't remember. Okay, Rico. I'm an honest man.
[21:26] Speaker 1: I do not steal. Okay.
[21:28] Speaker 3: I'll give you a receipt for this money, then you
[21:30] Speaker 3: can go.
[21:30] Speaker 5: Okay, open it up, guys.
[21:46] Speaker 3: Hello, Mrs.
[21:47] Speaker 1: Victor. What do you want?
[21:48] Speaker 3: The man down in the interrogation room wants you to talk.
[21:51] Speaker 1: What man? Come on, Mrs. Victor.
[21:53] Speaker 3: He wants you to talk to somebody.
[21:54] Speaker 6: I asked you what somebody?
[21:55] Speaker 3: A man named Mike Bryan.
[21:57] Speaker 1: I ain't leaving here.
[21:58] Speaker 6: Supper's here in ten minutes. I'm not going to miss
[22:00] Speaker 6: any supper to meet no man.
[22:01] Speaker 3: I ain't getting out of here. I've got to make
[22:03] Speaker 3: him to bring Mrs. Victor to the interrogation room.
[22:06] Speaker 4: What do you think, Madeline?
[22:10] Speaker 3: Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. It won't make sense.
[22:13] Speaker 3: Come on, let's go after Mike Bryan.
[22:15] Speaker 1: Ah!
[22:29] Speaker 3: It's not very pleasant here, Danny.
[22:31] Speaker 1: You know my taste.
[22:32] Speaker 3: Why do you bring me to a place like this?
[22:34] Speaker 3: The best we've got, Mike. Once we had a pillow
[22:36] Speaker 3: in here, Mike, a man with taste like yours took
[22:38] Speaker 3: it home. That was six years ago. It was in
[22:40] Speaker 3: the paper.
[22:41] Speaker 1: All right. In here, do your little act. Selina's waiting
[22:44] Speaker 1: for me.
[22:44] Speaker 3: Tell us again about Lila. She was before Selina.
[22:48] Speaker 1: She was... Yeah?
[22:53] Speaker 3: Matron out here with Mrs. Victor, Danny. Bring her in.
[22:58] Speaker 3: Got another lady for you, Mike.
[22:59] Speaker 1: Named Mrs. Victor. Has a hotel.
[23:00] Speaker 3: All right. Come on in, Mrs.
[23:03] Speaker 1: Victor.
[23:03] Speaker 4: Sit down.
[23:05] Speaker 1: Don't worry about it, Mrs. Victor. You'll have supper later.
[23:08] Speaker 1: Cold supper.
[23:09] Speaker 3: That's what I'll have.
[23:10] Speaker 1: What about, Mike?
[23:11] Speaker 3: You've seen this lady before? They come like that.
[23:14] Speaker 1: Where do you get them?
[23:15] Speaker 3: I told you they're out of whole prizes. Good roll.
[23:17] Speaker 6: I want to go back to my cell.
[23:18] Speaker 1: A little later.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Now.
[23:20] Speaker 7: Now I want to go back.
[23:20] Speaker 1: What's the matter? Don't you like Mike? I'm not going
[23:22] Speaker 1: to stay here.
[23:23] Speaker 3: Not with him.
[23:24] Speaker 1: Not that he can.
[23:26] Speaker 5: Don't let him touch me.
[23:27] Speaker 1: Get him away from me.
[23:28] Speaker 3: Dear lady, I just want to assure you that I.
[23:30] Speaker 6: Get him away from me.
[23:31] Speaker 1: Back up, Mike. Sit down. You too, Mrs. Victor. Thank you.
[23:35] Speaker 3: Why are you afraid of him, Mrs.
[23:36] Speaker 1: Vector?
[23:37] Speaker 3: He scared me.
[23:39] Speaker 1: I never got over him.
[23:40] Speaker 7: Him with that gun.
[23:41] Speaker 3: They go crazy fast in your jail.
[23:42] Speaker 1: Why did he scare you, Mrs.
[23:44] Speaker 4: Vector?
[23:44] Speaker 1: I want to help you.
[23:47] Speaker 3: And he brought Lila Hunter into your head, sir.
[23:50] Speaker 1: Listen, you.
[23:51] Speaker 6: Mike Bryan or whatever you call yourself.
[23:53] Speaker 1: Banker.
[23:54] Speaker 6: What's your idea of coming into my place with a gun?
[23:56] Speaker 6: What's your idea of making that poor girl sign that register?
[23:59] Speaker 2: What's the matter with you anyhow?
[24:00] Speaker 3: You think I'm crazy? You ought to look in the mirror.
[24:03] Speaker 1: That's what you ought to do. I told you, Mrs. Dickson. See?
[24:06] Speaker 3: He's going to hit me.
[24:07] Speaker 1: He's going to kill me. Just the way he said
[24:09] Speaker 1: he would. This new boy hasn't been here.
[24:11] Speaker 3: That does it, doesn't it, Mike?
[24:13] Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. Does what?
[24:14] Speaker 3: Are you simple, Mike? You know what it does. Marty
[24:16] Speaker 3: Scott took your woman, the one before Selena, Lila Hunter.
[24:19] Speaker 1: You killed Marty.
[24:20] Speaker 3: I did what? I killed Marty with Lila's gun. Then
[24:23] Speaker 3: you killed Lila, dumped her in the river.
[24:25] Speaker 1: That's interesting.
[24:26] Speaker 3: How do you figure all that? Like this. Marty pulled
[24:28] Speaker 3: a bank job. He and Lila were taken out to Mexico.
[24:30] Speaker 3: She bought tickets for both of them for the bank money.
[24:33] Speaker 3: Figure it this way, Danny. What you said, the first.
[24:35] Speaker 1: Lila killed Marty. That's the money. Double-crossed.
[24:38] Speaker 3: Funny we think you got the rest of that money, Mike.
[24:40] Speaker 1: Me?
[24:41] Speaker 3: How? Marty didn't have it. Lila didn't have it. Somebody
[24:43] Speaker 3: has to have it.
[24:44] Speaker 1: The killer.
[24:45] Speaker 3: How do you like that?
[24:46] Speaker 6: How do you like that?
[24:48] Speaker 3: Big killer, Mike.
[24:49] Speaker 1: Clever. Kill a girl.
[24:51] Speaker 3: Pay for a funeral just to make us track back
[24:53] Speaker 3: on her.
[24:54] Speaker 1: To come to you.
[24:54] Speaker 3: So you could tell us where she was.
[24:57] Speaker 1: In a flea bag.
[24:57] Speaker 3: I mean the same name.
[24:58] Speaker 1: Like a fugitive.
[24:59] Speaker 3: Like a girl who's just killed Marty Scott. And how
[25:02] Speaker 3: the gun on Mrs. Victor terrified her.
[25:03] Speaker 1: Oh, I wasn't scared. I was just acting.
[25:06] Speaker 3: Terrified her. Told her you'd kill her unless Mrs. Victor
[25:09] Speaker 3: told the story she did. Registered Lila in Skid Row,
[25:12] Speaker 3: then slugged her and killed her. And what kind of
[25:14] Speaker 3: a story is that about Lila phoning you for help,
[25:17] Speaker 3: for money? She had money banked loose, Marty's. What about it, Mike?
[25:23] Speaker 3: Nobody takes anything away from me. Marty tried it with Lila.
[25:27] Speaker 3: Look what happened to both of them. Just do me
[25:31] Speaker 3: a favor, Danny. Of course, Selina. Tell her not to wait.
[25:44] Speaker 3: The neon swirls unbroadly, and the glare is the temple
[25:59] Speaker 3: of yearning and dance.
[26:01] Speaker 1: So reach out and.
[26:03] Speaker 3: Grab a dream. Close your eyes and pretend you're.
[26:05] Speaker 1: Holding something special. Deep in thought, dream drafts lock in.
[26:13] Speaker 3: It's robbery. The gaudiest. The most violent. The lonesomest mile
[26:20] Speaker 3: in the road.
[26:21] Speaker 1: Robbery. Mighty. Robbery.
[26:42] Speaker 2: Welcome back! Well, this is an episode where Gordon makes
[26:46] Speaker 2: his presence felt even though he's not in the episode. Uh,
[26:51] Speaker 2: renting out the Bunsen burner. I mean, yeah, that is
[26:55] Speaker 2: a Gordon thing to do. All right, well, listener comments
[26:59] Speaker 2: and feedback. And we start on Spotify where Mechanic66 writes
[27:06] Speaker 2: regarding the Irene Hall murder case.
[27:09] Speaker 1: Good one.
[27:09] Speaker 2: I thought Danny might snap and backhand Gordon, but the
[27:13] Speaker 2: insult probably stung Gordon as much. Over on YouTube, regarding
[27:18] Speaker 2: the same episode, Aaron writes, Okay, Gordon the Tech is very,
[27:23] Speaker 2: very creepy. Are we sure he hasn't committed a crime?
[27:27] Speaker 2: I am not sure. I would welcome Broadway's My Bait
[27:33] Speaker 2: fan fiction about the true criminal nature of Gordon being... exposed.
[27:40] Speaker 2: The only crime we're aware of is probably the way
[27:44] Speaker 2: that he was using the Bunsen burners, because you really
[27:48] Speaker 2: should not be renting out public property as your own,
[27:52] Speaker 2: but that's probably not a very serious offense. But still,
[27:56] Speaker 2: I'll count it. And then Jeffrey writes, funny how Danny
[28:00] Speaker 2: does his interrogations, not in the usual interrogation room, but
[28:06] Speaker 2: in the cells. Yeah, Broadway's My Beat is a show
[28:10] Speaker 2: that will occasionally sacrifice a bit of realism for a
[28:16] Speaker 2: bit more drama. Now, as we did on Monday and Tuesday,
[28:20] Speaker 2: I'll go ahead and address the recording situation for next season.
[28:25] Speaker 2: And Broadway's My Beat is going to be playing throughout
[28:29] Speaker 2: most of season three. Though towards the end, we are
[28:36] Speaker 2: going to run out of episodes, I am thinking at
[28:38] Speaker 2: this point that there will be another Patreon vote of
[28:42] Speaker 2: which Wednesday series we will replay. But again, we have
[28:48] Speaker 2: quite a bit of Broadway's My Beat still to go.
[28:51] Speaker 2: Though alas, the true sinister nature of Gordon is unlikely
[28:56] Speaker 2: to be exposed by then. I will go ahead and
[28:59] Speaker 2: just say right in advance that Johnny Dollar and Dragnet
[29:03] Speaker 2: are going to pretty much continue on throughout the season,
[29:09] Speaker 2: so no changes there. All right, well now it's time
[29:13] Speaker 2: to thank our Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you
[29:16] Speaker 2: to Jim, Patreon supporter since January 2019, currently supporting the

[29:29] Speaker 2: Thanks so much for your support, Jim. And that will
[29:32] Speaker 2: do it for today. If you're enjoying the podcast, please

[29:43] Speaker 2: We'll be back next Wednesday with another episode of Broadway's
[29:46] Speaker 2: My Beat, but join us back here tomorrow for Dragnetware.
[29:51] Speaker 7: Just let me show you. Come in here, this way,
[29:53] Speaker 7: the dining room.
[29:54] Speaker 1: Yes, ma'am. Look at that. Look at that. Yes, ma'am.
[30:01] Speaker 1: It's very nice.
[30:02] Speaker 7: You see how I decorated the table? Paper streamers all
[30:06] Speaker 7: over the room. It was supposed to be a party
[30:08] Speaker 7: for the children in the neighborhood. I worked a whole
[30:11] Speaker 7: week getting it ready. I made the cakes myself. Decorate them, too.
[30:16] Speaker 7: I made everything in my own kitchen. Candy, sandwiches. Took
[30:21] Speaker 7: me a whole week. And they didn't even come. They
[30:25] Speaker 7: didn't come. Well, the neighborhood children It was supposed to
[30:29] Speaker 7: be for them. Special summer party I wanted to give
[30:31] Speaker 7: them today. They didn't even come. Their parents wouldn't let them.
[30:36] Speaker 1: Not one of them. It's a crime.
[30:39] Speaker 7: Terrible crime. All this good food.
[30:43] Speaker 1: Well, now, maybe there was a mistake, ma'am.
[30:45] Speaker 7: There wasn't any mistake. I invited the children, 14 of them.
[30:49] Speaker 7: Mothers wouldn't let them come. I had everything ready. Little
[30:53] Speaker 7: favors for each one of them. Now, look. Ice cream's
[30:58] Speaker 7: all melted. Hot cocoa boiled away to nothing. Even the
[31:03] Speaker 7: paper streamers are coming down. Such a mean thing to do.
[31:08] Speaker 7: Keeping children from a party. Such a mean thing.
[31:12] Speaker 2: I hope you'll be with us then. In the meantime,
