[1:20] Speaker 1: Now this special is going to be one of our
[1:23] Speaker 1: twice Toole Tale episodes. Now, for those of you who
[1:26] Speaker 1: haven't listened to these in the past, what we do
[1:30] Speaker 1: is we will play two episodes, both written by the
[1:35] Speaker 1: same writer but recycled from one series to another. And
[1:41] Speaker 1: this sort of recycling of scripts we refer to it
[1:46] Speaker 1: from time to time, but it was a fairly common
[1:49] Speaker 1: practice by many writers who took advantage of the fact
[1:54] Speaker 1: that their programs aired only once, So it wasn't that
[1:58] Speaker 1: hard to wait a few months or a year or
[2:00] Speaker 1: so and essentially take the same script, make a few changes,
[2:06] Speaker 1: and you have another program from the same basic story. Today,
[2:12] Speaker 1: we are going to feature a story that was done
[2:16] Speaker 1: on two very different series. First of all, there was
[2:20] Speaker 1: The Silent Men, a series starring Douglas Fairbank Junior, where
[2:26] Speaker 1: each week he would play a different protagonist who represented
[2:31] Speaker 1: one of the obscure federal agencies whose bottle work often
[2:38] Speaker 1: went unnoticed and little known by their fellow Americans. And
[2:45] Speaker 1: then we have Not Beat, which was a series starring
[2:50] Speaker 1: Frank Lovejoy as a reporter who walks around in the
[2:54] Speaker 1: evening searching for stories for his newspaper call called not In.
[3:01] Speaker 1: This series features many human mysteries. So now from February third,
[3:06] Speaker 1: nineteen fifty two is the episode of The Silent Men,
[3:09] Speaker 1: The Big.
[3:10] Speaker 2: Kill Douglas Fairbanks Junior and The Silent Men. The National
[3:37] Speaker 2: Broadcasting Company probably presents Douglas Fairbanks production of The Silent Man.
[3:43] Speaker 2: Franscribed stories of the undercover operation of the special agents
[3:46] Speaker 2: of every branch of our federal government and their relentless
[3:49] Speaker 2: fight against crime.
[3:51] Speaker 3: Now Here is Douglas Fairbanks.
[3:53] Speaker 4: Many people assume that the special agents of our federal
[3:56] Speaker 4: government are concerned only with feign intrigue as or international problems.
[4:02] Speaker 5: But this is not the case.
[4:04] Speaker 4: For every citizen of this country, regardless of age or nationality,
[4:07] Speaker 4: is under the constant protection and surveillance of the silent Men.
[4:12] Speaker 5: And the same skill and persistence.
[4:14] Speaker 4: That is used in guarding the security of our nation
[4:17] Speaker 4: is also used in dealing with some of the trials
[4:19] Speaker 4: and disturbances of mister and missus average American. This is
[4:24] Speaker 4: such a story, a case involving simply people. In it,
[4:29] Speaker 4: I played the part of Special Agent Alec Brown, from
[4:33] Speaker 4: whose departmental chief in Washington I obtained the fact the
[4:37] Speaker 4: file case entitled the Big Kill, in which only the names.
[4:41] Speaker 5: And places are fictional.
[4:50] Speaker 4: I'd been transferred from CIA headquarters in Washington to the
[4:53] Speaker 4: District office in New York.
[4:55] Speaker 5: A new office meant a new rou team.
[4:56] Speaker 4: And I was familiarizing myself with it by working evenings.
[5:00] Speaker 4: An office is a lonely place at night, and when
[5:02] Speaker 4: the phone at my side shattered the stillness with a
[5:04] Speaker 4: sharp cry, I was startled out of my wits.
[5:07] Speaker 5: Hello, Yes, what do you want to stay to.
[5:12] Speaker 6: Quick please hurry.
[5:13] Speaker 7: What is it?
[5:14] Speaker 5: Maybe I can help you?
[5:15] Speaker 6: Bomb in the plane Chicago?
[5:17] Speaker 8: Is there anyone there me?
[5:19] Speaker 6: I'll tell you the Chicago bombs.
[5:20] Speaker 5: Play one minute. Please give me your name? Please?
[5:24] Speaker 6: What did my name? You have no time?
[5:27] Speaker 5: I must have your name. I got what plight to Chicago?
[5:33] Speaker 4: I couldn't, lady, it's five after eight now you phone
[5:37] Speaker 4: just ten minutes too late.
[5:53] Speaker 5: In my line of work, I get a.
[5:54] Speaker 4: Lot of crank telephone calls, but I couldn't take chances
[5:56] Speaker 4: on this one. I called the control tower at the airport. Immediate,
[6:01] Speaker 4: car Brown at CIA, you have seven fifty five flight
[6:04] Speaker 4: to Chicago. Yes, contact the filers immediately. Have you made
[6:07] Speaker 4: an emergency landing at once? Unload the passengers and let
[6:10] Speaker 4: no one in or near the plane till I get there.
[6:12] Speaker 5: I'll stand by. I've been trying to tell.
[6:14] Speaker 4: You, sir, the Chicago plane hasn't taken off.
[6:16] Speaker 5: Oh the Fox settled suddenly on the airfield, and we're
[6:19] Speaker 5: waiting till it lives. Where is she now? The far
[6:21] Speaker 5: end of the strip. Believe her there.
[6:23] Speaker 4: One all personnel to keep clear. I'll be there as
[6:25] Speaker 4: soon as I can.
[6:26] Speaker 5: But why don't do as I tell you? My from
[6:35] Speaker 5: the police headquarters by radio.
[6:36] Speaker 4: They contacted Lieutenant Pearson and a driver in my neighborhood,
[6:39] Speaker 4: and in less than five minutes, I was in the
[6:40] Speaker 4: backseat of a car racing.
[6:42] Speaker 5: To the airport. What time you got, thesentants?
[6:45] Speaker 4: Eight twenty step on a driver, he's doing eighty. Now
[6:48] Speaker 4: there's the lights of the field. If there's anything, I
[6:51] Speaker 4: can't stand as bond.
[6:52] Speaker 5: Even thinking about them.
[6:53] Speaker 4: Gives me the goose flesh and me off twoty twenty
[6:56] Speaker 4: minutes ago.
[6:59] Speaker 5: Yes she is.
[7:00] Speaker 4: You can stop here. You stay here, Lieutenant. I'll call
[7:05] Speaker 4: you if everything's okay. That makes me plenty happy.
[7:08] Speaker 9: I don't lie.
[7:19] Speaker 5: There's been a bomb, all right, and a big one.
[7:22] Speaker 4: When the earth stopped tossing me around, I looked up
[7:25] Speaker 4: at the burning DC.
[7:26] Speaker 5: Four people were pouring.
[7:27] Speaker 4: Out of the main building, and I saw a truck
[7:29] Speaker 4: with a fire crew headed for the plane.
[7:31] Speaker 5: I picked myself up to my feet. Come on, you heard, Alex.
[7:37] Speaker 5: You hit bad. That's shaken up, okay. I didn't get
[7:40] Speaker 5: any closer. Oh good you he died when I heard it.
[7:43] Speaker 5: I'm afraid of nothing in this big, wide role like
[7:45] Speaker 5: a bomb blast. And I thought she was another crank.
[7:51] Speaker 4: Glad to step back, Lieutenant, I don't want anyone here.
[7:54] Speaker 5: Put the fireman near this plane. You hurt the man,
[7:56] Speaker 5: all right?
[7:57] Speaker 4: Now?
[7:57] Speaker 10: Step back, fin back on.
[8:04] Speaker 5: Fire boys did their best, but it wasn't good enough.
[8:06] Speaker 5: If Chad goes to the airline, I lay there on
[8:08] Speaker 5: the ground.
[8:09] Speaker 4: If you had taken off on time, thirty human bodies.
[8:11] Speaker 5: Would have been added to the awful site. Being in
[8:14] Speaker 5: miss brand to.
[8:15] Speaker 4: The service for seven years taught me where to look
[8:17] Speaker 4: for evidence.
[8:17] Speaker 5: Lieutenant Pierson helped me. What are we looking for?
[8:23] Speaker 7: Oh?
[8:23] Speaker 5: Anything? Bomb fragments? Maybe see these bent FIBs here, that's
[8:28] Speaker 5: the spot that got it first.
[8:29] Speaker 4: You will in a miss of this luggage? Yeah, what
[8:31] Speaker 4: there is left of it? What's that you got in
[8:33] Speaker 4: your hand? A piece of sharp metal I picked.
[8:36] Speaker 5: Up here, put it in his handkerchief.
[8:37] Speaker 4: It's a bomb fragment, you see anymore? I don't handle it, Prince.
[8:41] Speaker 4: If I didn't mean of us from the bomb, I
[8:42] Speaker 4: wouldn't have touched you with a ten foot pole. Here's
[8:44] Speaker 4: a real fine piece of leather with a fragment embedded
[8:48] Speaker 4: in it.
[8:49] Speaker 5: Could just be it? What a suitcase? The bomb came in?
[8:53] Speaker 5: Passengers still waiting Yeah, they're celebrating the miracle that let
[8:57] Speaker 5: them go on living. I'm afraid one of them is
[8:59] Speaker 5: going to stop celebrating. Let's go. I want to have
[9:02] Speaker 5: a talk with him.
[9:03] Speaker 4: You think, well, the bombers a rule of the passenger
[9:05] Speaker 4: suit forces. I'm sure now don't make sense. Why would
[9:08] Speaker 4: a guy for the bomb in his own luggae if
[9:10] Speaker 4: we knew it was gonna blow the kingdom? Come, I
[9:14] Speaker 4: don't know made the insurance, Just ship his luggage and
[9:18] Speaker 4: when the plane goes he's registered is dead.
[9:21] Speaker 5: Stranger things have happened. Never follow that angle.
[9:24] Speaker 7: Who's in charge of this investigation?
[9:26] Speaker 5: Both of us whine?
[9:27] Speaker 7: My name is Stephen Bradley.
[9:28] Speaker 4: So I want to go back to my hotel.
[9:31] Speaker 7: I'm badly shaken up. You have no right to hold
[9:33] Speaker 7: us here.
[9:34] Speaker 4: I have a lot of right to find out who
[9:35] Speaker 4: tried to murder thirty people.
[9:37] Speaker 7: Then it was murder, I knew it.
[9:39] Speaker 4: You have a copy of the passenger list, Lieutenant, you're
[9:42] Speaker 4: having all right?
[9:43] Speaker 5: Folks, We'll call you up.
[9:44] Speaker 4: One by one see if you can identify this piece
[9:47] Speaker 4: of yellow pigskin leather.
[9:49] Speaker 5: If you think it was your luggage.
[9:51] Speaker 7: Please say so.
[9:52] Speaker 4: We'll begin with you mister Bradley. Okay, this is your luggage.
[9:58] Speaker 5: Look anything like it?
[10:00] Speaker 7: That wasn't mine?
[10:01] Speaker 5: All right? Next one, please come on, folks, we ain't
[10:04] Speaker 5: get on my kid moving. Come on.
[10:12] Speaker 4: Thirty people lined up to look at the piece of
[10:13] Speaker 4: yellow leather. Not one of them claimed it. We tend
[10:16] Speaker 4: to check their addresses and gave them a routine speel
[10:19] Speaker 4: about being available for questioning, and then.
[10:21] Speaker 5: Let them go home.
[10:22] Speaker 9: Woo.
[10:23] Speaker 4: That's that, Just a little much more we can do tonight.
[10:26] Speaker 4: My time system past nine.
[10:28] Speaker 5: That's right.
[10:29] Speaker 4: Less than an hour ago, thirty people would have died
[10:32] Speaker 4: up there somewhere.
[10:33] Speaker 5: It's not me for a loop. Why didn't you phone
[10:35] Speaker 5: your report in and take off?
[10:37] Speaker 9: Ooh?
[10:38] Speaker 5: What about you? Oh?
[10:39] Speaker 4: I have a little more routine checking to do in
[10:41] Speaker 4: a baggage department.
[10:42] Speaker 5: Everything turns up, I can call you.
[10:50] Speaker 4: The baggage man was reading a ten cent comic book,
[10:52] Speaker 4: and he put it down reluctantly as I approached.
[10:55] Speaker 5: What can I do for you?
[10:56] Speaker 3: You'll handle all the luggage six to one o'clock.
[10:59] Speaker 4: Why would you remember if you handled a piece of
[11:02] Speaker 4: luggage made.
[11:02] Speaker 5: Out of yellow pigskin?
[11:04] Speaker 11: Hey, you must be the fellow looking at that bombing
[11:07] Speaker 11: you know, I got my own ideas how it happened.
[11:09] Speaker 5: It's them calming. We'll get to the international situation in
[11:12] Speaker 5: a while. Right now, See if you can remember handling
[11:14] Speaker 5: a yellow bag.
[11:15] Speaker 11: Handle, maybe four or five hundred bags a night, not
[11:18] Speaker 11: being paid enough of that. Now I gotta start memorizing.
[11:21] Speaker 4: This coarse green on the letter makes me think it
[11:23] Speaker 4: was a Gladstone.
[11:24] Speaker 11: Golly, now you come to say it. Hey, I do
[11:27] Speaker 11: remember seeing one. Yeah, a yellow ones yep, right here
[11:30] Speaker 11: on this rack tonight.
[11:31] Speaker 3: And what's more, I know I all got there.
[11:33] Speaker 11: A messenger brought it sure positive.
[11:36] Speaker 5: Oh wait, now I'll find it a slip.
[11:39] Speaker 4: Yeah, here it is the nerve messenger that hey delivered
[11:44] Speaker 4: to airport Terminal one pigskin Gladstone bag. Look here delivered
[11:48] Speaker 4: the baggage room for Stephen Bradley Flight thirty six, Stephen
[11:53] Speaker 4: brad Bradley.
[11:54] Speaker 11: Yeah, that's the guy. You better go get him, mister.
[12:03] Speaker 4: I phoned badly at his hotel.
[12:04] Speaker 5: He hadn't checked in yet. Then I called Lieutenant Pearson.
[12:07] Speaker 5: There was no real welcome in his voice.
[12:10] Speaker 7: Glad you called Alec?
[12:11] Speaker 5: What's up? I found out who owns that suitcase? Take
[12:15] Speaker 5: him up? Not so fast. It's Stephen Bradley, and he's
[12:17] Speaker 5: not in his hotel. I'll get him, all right. So
[12:20] Speaker 5: that's who did it? The way he strutted around there?
[12:22] Speaker 5: You think he owned the airport.
[12:24] Speaker 4: Well, let's not convict him yet. Find him first and
[12:26] Speaker 4: prove it. That's the way it's done. You know, save
[12:28] Speaker 4: them book rules for somebody else.
[12:30] Speaker 12: Where'd you be?
[12:31] Speaker 4: I'm going to visit a twenty four hour messenger service
[12:33] Speaker 4: the Minerva Company.
[12:34] Speaker 5: Ever heard of it? You will?
[12:43] Speaker 4: Three or four souped up motorcycles rested on the wall
[12:45] Speaker 4: of the Minerva Messenger Service, and.
[12:47] Speaker 5: Inside the enthusiasts who drive them.
[12:49] Speaker 4: We're playing cards. He goes to a card game. What
[12:54] Speaker 4: did you missed him?
[12:55] Speaker 5: I'm looking for a messenger who delivered a yellow.
[12:57] Speaker 4: Pigskin suitcase to the airport early this evening.
[13:00] Speaker 5: About it? That's Marty ship. That a guy who took it?
[13:03] Speaker 5: Y'all pick skin?
[13:04] Speaker 4: Bledstone bag builder, Stephen Bradley.
[13:07] Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure I was a Namia. Where'd you pick
[13:09] Speaker 5: it up? I always had screwy dealer. Given Bush finds
[13:11] Speaker 5: an envelope in a.
[13:12] Speaker 13: Mail's card, got two bucks in it and a Kia
[13:14] Speaker 13: locker at the Islington Bust people instructions to pick up a.
[13:17] Speaker 5: Suitcase about six thirty and take at the airport Arlington
[13:20] Speaker 5: bus deeoplet. Look, if you'll excuse me, I was kind
[13:23] Speaker 5: of having a lucky streak when you came in. Oh
[13:25] Speaker 5: here's the half a buck. I kept her from winning.
[13:27] Speaker 5: Thanks guys, all right.
[13:39] Speaker 4: The fact that Bradley hadn't brought the suitcase to the
[13:41] Speaker 4: airport himself.
[13:42] Speaker 5: Led to some interesting speculation.
[13:44] Speaker 4: And I'd learned long ago in this business that the
[13:46] Speaker 4: o'bdoers there's something you've.
[13:47] Speaker 5: Got to regard with suspicious. It was about a quarter
[13:50] Speaker 5: to ten when I got to the bus depot.
[13:52] Speaker 4: The usual weary looking travelers sat around nodding their heads.
[13:55] Speaker 5: The lady who'd started this evening off for me had.
[13:58] Speaker 4: Gone from here out of that, especially after I learned
[14:02] Speaker 4: that the yellow bag had been picked up at the
[14:04] Speaker 4: same depot.
[14:05] Speaker 5: No role of unbooth telephones.
[14:07] Speaker 4: There was a magazine and candy stands. I waited till
[14:12] Speaker 4: the girl behind the counter got rid of some of
[14:14] Speaker 4: her customers.
[14:14] Speaker 6: Yes, there's something to you.
[14:16] Speaker 5: Any other payphones in these over here?
[14:18] Speaker 14: No?
[14:19] Speaker 5: And you make change for most of them, do Yeah?
[14:21] Speaker 6: Drives me nuts.
[14:22] Speaker 15: I've got a little sales to make change, and I
[14:24] Speaker 15: look on commission.
[14:25] Speaker 4: Will I tell you, first man, your job gets to
[14:27] Speaker 4: be pretty observant, don't you.
[14:29] Speaker 15: You're telling me say my boss don't like me talking
[14:32] Speaker 15: to fellows here in working alley.
[14:34] Speaker 4: Well, maybe you'll forgive you in this case, I'm a
[14:37] Speaker 4: special agent federal government.
[14:38] Speaker 6: Go on, you could and don't look like that.
[14:42] Speaker 4: No, square cut shaws, steely gray eyes. Look, miss this
[14:46] Speaker 4: is serious, very serious.
[14:47] Speaker 5: I get you.
[14:49] Speaker 4: A little after eight o'clock tonight, a girl phoned me
[14:51] Speaker 4: from this bus depot.
[14:52] Speaker 5: She'd been crying. I thought maybe you'd notice that.
[14:55] Speaker 6: I don't know, I'm trying to think no'es.
[14:59] Speaker 5: She look like no.
[15:00] Speaker 4: I'd say she was between thirty and thirty five, kind
[15:03] Speaker 4: of a sexy voice. She said she'd had to hang
[15:05] Speaker 4: up a bus was leaving. That would have been about
[15:10] Speaker 4: five minutes past eight.
[15:11] Speaker 15: That's a Jersey social and I think I got the
[15:14] Speaker 15: girl for you.
[15:15] Speaker 6: But she came in about seven point thirty.
[15:17] Speaker 15: I noticed how nervous she was, and then she came
[15:19] Speaker 15: up to me and asked if anyone had left the
[15:21] Speaker 15: message with him. So, missus Cohen of a Koran anyway
[15:26] Speaker 15: some name like that. Her eyes were red like she's
[15:28] Speaker 15: been crying.
[15:29] Speaker 4: So I watched it.
[15:29] Speaker 10: You saw I make the canes right at the first phone,
[15:32] Speaker 10: did you No?
[15:33] Speaker 15: I couldn't hear what she said, but her shoulders were
[15:36] Speaker 15: choking like she was brawling.
[15:37] Speaker 5: Missus Koran or Karen? What does she look like?
[15:41] Speaker 16: Well like I wish I look dark hair, about five
[15:45] Speaker 16: feet poor beautiful?
[15:48] Speaker 6: Did you are you writing that down?
[15:50] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[15:51] Speaker 16: Yeah, some minute?
[15:52] Speaker 6: Why am I done?
[15:53] Speaker 15: Before she left, she gave me a note to get
[15:54] Speaker 15: to anyone who might ask for it, said hell?
[15:57] Speaker 6: Hell, yeah she didn't. Naila did nothing, So I I.
[16:01] Speaker 5: Know, I know, And this hal came and got the note.
[16:04] Speaker 16: No, I still got it.
[16:06] Speaker 5: Here it is hell, please come home?
[16:10] Speaker 16: What do you make of it?
[16:11] Speaker 5: Jersey bus leaves at eight o five stall go through
[16:14] Speaker 5: the Jersey Gate. O.
[16:15] Speaker 6: Thanks thanks to you.
[16:16] Speaker 5: Yeah a lot? You know what?
[16:19] Speaker 9: Right?
[16:20] Speaker 5: If you ever need a job, there's one waiting for
[16:22] Speaker 5: you in Washington. The girl had left the trailer easy
[16:30] Speaker 5: enough for a tenderfoot boy. Scout the phone.
[16:32] Speaker 4: The phone book told me there was a hal for
[16:34] Speaker 4: im living on ninety sixth Street in Jersey City. Caution,
[16:37] Speaker 4: you should have warned me that it was a little
[16:39] Speaker 4: too bad, too easy way things looked. At this point,
[16:42] Speaker 4: I'd have a case four or against Bradley by morning.
[16:45] Speaker 4: In less than two and a half hours after the
[16:47] Speaker 4: woman had called to tell me.
[16:48] Speaker 5: About the bomb, I was.
[16:49] Speaker 4: Standing in front of the door to her apartment. First
[16:54] Speaker 4: I thought there was no one home. Then I heard
[16:56] Speaker 4: the movement behind the door.

[17:06] Speaker 5: I know you, missus Kran.
[17:08] Speaker 4: You're a voice. It's very distinctive. I've heard it only
[17:11] Speaker 4: once before, but i'd know it ten years from now.
[17:14] Speaker 5: You read my voice.
[17:15] Speaker 16: I think you're mistaken.

[18:56] Speaker 5: and it's not.
[18:59] Speaker 16: It was a qual started off like any other quarrel.
[19:02] Speaker 16: Husband and wife's agree.
[19:03] Speaker 5: Would you like to tell me about it?
[19:05] Speaker 16: I suppose I'll have to say it or later. My
[19:08] Speaker 16: husband and Stephen Bradley started the room and machine shops together.
[19:12] Speaker 16: They were equal partners to begin with.
[19:14] Speaker 5: It did extely well, I understand oh, not true then.
[19:18] Speaker 16: And how did something he was some of the company's
[19:21] Speaker 16: funds gambled with it? When Grader found out who one
[19:24] Speaker 16: of the money put back at once as he would prosecute. Well,
[19:28] Speaker 16: Hal couldn't learn that much. Bradley took over house half
[19:31] Speaker 16: of the business in print, and then he lost all
[19:34] Speaker 16: of his initiatives. He became a laborer in the business
[19:37] Speaker 16: he created.
[19:39] Speaker 6: Brandy used him for early.
[19:40] Speaker 15: Could we quarreled about it?

[19:46] Speaker 5: d it?
[19:47] Speaker 8: I true.
[19:50] Speaker 16: Then we learned that Bradley had throwed out to an
[19:52] Speaker 16: Eastern combine for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Bradley
[19:56] Speaker 16: hasn't said anything that the deal was completed.
[19:59] Speaker 6: And that night, how home work? I've never seen?
[20:03] Speaker 8: Oh just a minute off with the signs the two Hi, honey,

[20:29] Speaker 6: Tell me how all right?
[20:31] Speaker 5: All right? I lost my job, a lot of work
[20:35] Speaker 5: and lost your job. I'll get another one.
[20:39] Speaker 6: Why did Bradley follow you?
[20:41] Speaker 5: And Bradley new people took over this morning?
[20:46] Speaker 11: Oh what new people?
[20:48] Speaker 6: Why did you never start at the beginning?
[20:50] Speaker 5: New people? Bradley sold their business. He he didn't want me.
[20:53] Speaker 6: So I'm through That business is half you. You help
[20:56] Speaker 6: build it up.

[21:01] Speaker 16: What kind of a man are you?
[21:03] Speaker 12: Was I supposed to do it Bradley over the head?
[21:06] Speaker 11: Oh no, that takes nerves rocking double ding.
[21:10] Speaker 6: And he didn't say anything to you.
[21:12] Speaker 13: Well, came up to me after it was all over
[21:14] Speaker 13: and said goodbye. He's going to the coach to live
[21:20] Speaker 13: tomorrow night.
[21:20] Speaker 16: And you just stood there and said good luck.
[21:22] Speaker 6: Steeve. Oh hell, this is the last call.
[21:25] Speaker 16: I can't go on living with a man.
[21:26] Speaker 17: And we'll fight back a finless incompetent.
[21:29] Speaker 3: That am I supposed to do till him?
[21:33] Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe that's what you want me to do? Kill him?

[22:07] Speaker 1: Hell, come back?
[22:22] Speaker 6: What at all?
[22:23] Speaker 5: This morning? The bomb?
[22:25] Speaker 16: I put it in a suitcase and made me go
[22:27] Speaker 16: with him and put it in a locker, and he
[22:29] Speaker 16: told me to the messenger place and I dropped the
[22:30] Speaker 16: envelope there with the key in it. He had a
[22:34] Speaker 16: gun with him and said.
[22:35] Speaker 11: He was killed.
[22:37] Speaker 5: But why a bomb? Why jeopardize the lives of thirty passengers?
[22:40] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[22:41] Speaker 8: He was like a man who has lost his mom.
[22:45] Speaker 6: He was, and then he.
[22:47] Speaker 16: Waded the basleeper till I picked the suitcase up, and
[22:50] Speaker 16: he came up.
[22:50] Speaker 6: To me and said goodbye.
[22:52] Speaker 16: He said he would kill himself after he was sure
[22:54] Speaker 16: the bomb would go home.
[22:58] Speaker 11: Hello, Yes, definite.
[23:05] Speaker 5: Yeah, Find Bradley or Koran.
[23:07] Speaker 4: No, I don't think so. Concentrate on Koran. He's got
[23:13] Speaker 4: a gun and when he finds out Bradley wasn't killed,
[23:15] Speaker 4: he'll go after him.
[23:16] Speaker 5: He's the man we want.
[23:17] Speaker 6: Now, We'll Pody wasn't killed, but the bomb.
[23:21] Speaker 4: Lame was grounded on account of fog. None of the
[23:24] Speaker 4: passengers were.
[23:25] Speaker 16: Aboard fog and nobody was killed.
[23:29] Speaker 5: Oh what is it that fog saved the lives?
[23:34] Speaker 4: But now he killed himself for nothing?
[23:38] Speaker 5: Oh?
[23:39] Speaker 6: Poor hell.
[23:40] Speaker 16: Even this one final gesture couldn't come off right for him.
[23:43] Speaker 4: I'm not so sure he's dead, missus Koran. He may
[23:46] Speaker 4: have been at the airport when the bomb went off.
[23:48] Speaker 4: He may be looking for Bradley now with the gun.
[23:51] Speaker 15: No, he's dead, I tell you I killed.
[24:01] Speaker 5: Poor woman was in a state of semi hysteria, and I.

[24:09] Speaker 4: two of them and fell back, exhausted on the couch.
[24:12] Speaker 5: I phoned headquarters. Still no news of either Bradley or Koran.
[24:17] Speaker 4: It was him midnight, and I was getting a little
[24:18] Speaker 4: drowsy myself, but I heard someone turning the doorknob. He
[24:24] Speaker 4: stood in the doorway a moment. Old old man in
[24:29] Speaker 4: his shoulders sagged and there was a look of utter
[24:33] Speaker 4: dejection about him. He blinked stupidly at me. Then he
[24:37] Speaker 4: walked over to the woman on the couch. It's better,
[24:41] Speaker 4: was her Claire, are you hal Koran.
[24:46] Speaker 5: Let's talk to her. Clerk, Claire, wake up?

[25:27] Speaker 5: The bomb you'll put in Bradley's suitcase.
[25:28] Speaker 3: Oh, that's what I've been trying to tell her.
[25:30] Speaker 13: I couldn't go through with it. You're thinking about all
[25:34] Speaker 13: those people and women, some kids, and it's no fault
[25:36] Speaker 13: of viewers that are alive. At this moment.
[25:39] Speaker 4: The plane hadn't been held up on account of fog.
[25:41] Speaker 13: I don't know what you're talking about. I just couldn't
[25:43] Speaker 13: go through it. And understand I was going through. But
[25:45] Speaker 13: like Claire, it says I got no guts.

[26:35] Speaker 3: All right, when you're listen, somebody put that bomb back there.
[26:42] Speaker 5: How long do you think you will last?

[26:52] Speaker 5: I phoned the police and asked them to stake up
[26:54] Speaker 5: the neighborhood.
[26:55] Speaker 4: Then I went out after him. I figured he'd be
[26:57] Speaker 4: hiding someplace close by. I tell uneasy about leaving missus
[27:01] Speaker 4: Koran alone in the apartment. So after about fifteen minutes
[27:04] Speaker 4: I went back. I heard some movement behind her door.
[27:07] Speaker 4: I was sure Karan had come back, and I wanted
[27:09] Speaker 4: to get in quietly so I could get him from
[27:11] Speaker 4: behind him. Someone was standing close to missus Koran. But
[27:16] Speaker 4: it wasn't her husband. It was Bradley, Stephen, Bradley, Bradley.

[30:56] Speaker 5: There's only one way to square me.
[31:00] Speaker 10: Else.
[31:02] Speaker 6: You love me, Help, don't you?
[31:06] Speaker 4: I love you, Claire, Clare Claire. This is Douglas Fairbanks again.
[31:32] Speaker 4: This closes another chapter in the distinguished chronicle of our
[31:35] Speaker 4: Silent Men, the special agents of all branches of our
[31:39] Speaker 4: federal government who daily risked their lives to protect the
[31:43] Speaker 4: lives of all of us. Next week we will tell
[31:46] Speaker 4: you a story involving a missing boatload of plasma in
[31:49] Speaker 4: the file case entitled Blood Money, another venture undertaken for
[31:54] Speaker 4: our protection by the Silent Men.
[32:01] Speaker 3: The Silent Men is produced and directed by Warren Lewis.
[32:04] Speaker 2: The Knight's Case was written by Lewis and Russoff and
[32:06] Speaker 2: transcribed in Hollywood only.
[32:08] Speaker 3: The names and places were fictional.
[32:10] Speaker 5: Featured in the Knight's.
[32:10] Speaker 2: Cast were Loreen tappl Lamont Johnson, Harry Lang, Paul Freeze.
[32:14] Speaker 5: Beddy Moran, and Jack Carroll. Your announcer is Don Stanley.
[32:17] Speaker 3: Douglas Fairbanks is currently presenting Betty.
[32:19] Speaker 2: Davis, Gary Merrill and Edmund Williams in the motion picture
[32:22] Speaker 2: Another Man's Poisons.
[32:24] Speaker 3: Listen again next week and every week.
[32:25] Speaker 2: The other exciting cases involving the law enforcement adventures of
[32:29] Speaker 2: the special agents of our federal government, well they are
[32:33] Speaker 2: the Silent Men. Now it's adventure with the Texas Rangers
[32:48] Speaker 2: and Joel McCrae on NBC.
[32:54] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, an interesting case and a story that
[33:01] Speaker 1: really does begin with the bang. The more melodramatic moments
[33:06] Speaker 1: are a bit out of place on The Silent Man,
[33:09] Speaker 1: but other than that, I thought it was a decent episode.
[33:11] Speaker 1: So now let's see how not Beat handled it. Seven
[33:14] Speaker 1: months later, here from September fourth, nineteen fifty two is Ellen.
[33:24] Speaker 18: Night.
[33:42] Speaker 10: Hi, this is Randy Stone. I cover the night beat
[33:44] Speaker 10: of the Chicago Star in a newspaper office. The night
[33:48] Speaker 10: scenes especially reserved for all sorts of Sculley crank calls,
[33:53] Speaker 10: and if every wild tailor came in over the telephone
[33:55] Speaker 10: was cracked down, there wouldn't be enough reporters left around
[33:58] Speaker 10: and make up a game of solidaire. Miss Yarn started
[34:02] Speaker 10: with one of those calls. But it ended differently, and
[34:06] Speaker 10: how differently it ended. It was eight o'clock in the evening,
[34:14] Speaker 10: the heavy rain was falling, and I found an excuse
[34:16] Speaker 10: to sit it out by polishing my next day's monumental
[34:19] Speaker 10: trivia with a column. I was looking for the capital
[34:22] Speaker 10: A on my type.

[35:10] Speaker 10: I couldn't take chances with this one. I called the
[35:13] Speaker 10: control tower at the airport. This is Randy Stone, Chicago Star.
[35:21] Speaker 10: You had an eight thirty flight to Denver. Oh well,
[35:23] Speaker 10: you've better contact that pilot immediately and tell him to
[35:26] Speaker 10: make an emergency landing wherever he is having load the
[35:29] Speaker 10: passengers and let no one near the plane till the
[35:30] Speaker 10: police get there. The Denver point hasn't taken off, buck
[35:33] Speaker 10: came and has been grounded to Where is she now?
[35:37] Speaker 10: Oh good, We'll keep it there and warn all personnel

[35:49] Speaker 10: called police headquarters and they sent a radio car to
[35:51] Speaker 10: pick me up. In five minutes. I was sitting in
[35:53] Speaker 10: the back seat with sergeants Kowski while the driver ripped
[35:55] Speaker 10: up the streets at seventy miles an hours.
[35:58] Speaker 5: If there's anything I can staying Randy gets bombs?
[36:01] Speaker 10: How what time he got? Sergeant fifty five and.
[36:05] Speaker 5: Me off duty twenty minutes ago. I was getting a
[36:07] Speaker 5: ride home when the call came through.
[36:08] Speaker 10: Oh there she is. You can stop here. Oh yeah,
[36:13] Speaker 10: come on.
[36:15] Speaker 5: And I'm gonna tell me, Randy, I'm scared, tell me too.
[36:18] Speaker 5: I hope that call was a phony.
[36:27] Speaker 10: It was a bomb, all right, and the big one.
[36:30] Speaker 10: The explosion threw me to the ground. When the other
[36:33] Speaker 10: stopped tossing me around, I looked at the burning DC
[36:35] Speaker 10: four and people were pouring tords her out of the
[36:37] Speaker 10: main building. I saw a jeep with a fire crew
[36:40] Speaker 10: race for the plane, and I fought my way back
[36:42] Speaker 10: to my feet.
[36:43] Speaker 5: You heard, Randy, I'm shaking up.
[36:45] Speaker 10: That's all. We better get over there, costing.
[36:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, all right, all right, folks, step back,
[36:53] Speaker 4: step back, I let square the field.
[36:55] Speaker 5: Now back inside the waiting with all of you.
[37:00] Speaker 10: The fire boys already have it like.
[37:04] Speaker 5: It looks like a ghost sign there.
[37:07] Speaker 10: Well, what do we do now, Sergeant, look around a bit.
[37:11] Speaker 4: It's safe now. You need to make a report on this.
[37:17] Speaker 4: CEE A B boys will take over in the morning.
[37:19] Speaker 4: But I gotta make a report anyways.
[37:22] Speaker 10: Well, exactly what are you looking for?
[37:24] Speaker 5: Bomb fragments?
[37:25] Speaker 4: Maybe maybe Uncle will continue the bomb was in who knows, Oh,
[37:30] Speaker 4: there's some list. What's this let's see, it could be
[37:38] Speaker 4: a bomb fragment you see anymore? Don't handle them, Prince?
[37:42] Speaker 10: You mean Prince would stay on after an explosion like that?
[37:44] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[37:45] Speaker 4: Crazy, This is the same for a minute, the fragment
[37:51] Speaker 4: just like the other, and this one is embedded in
[37:54] Speaker 4: a piece of leather.
[37:56] Speaker 10: Yellow pigskin leather. Think of the bombers in this bag?
[38:00] Speaker 4: Maybe maybe not, but it's something to go on. Now,
[38:03] Speaker 4: let's go talk to the passengers.
[38:07] Speaker 10: Why would a passenger put a bomb in his own
[38:09] Speaker 10: luggage if you know he's going to be blown the kingdom?
[38:11] Speaker 5: Come a nice guy? Whoever did?
[38:15] Speaker 4: All right, folks, all right, settled down, you've got a
[38:19] Speaker 4: little talking to though.
[38:22] Speaker 5: Everybody here.
[38:22] Speaker 4: There was to be a passenger in twae sixty three.
[38:25] Speaker 9: Uh O.
[38:27] Speaker 19: My name is Stephen Bradley. So we're badly shaking up.
[38:31] Speaker 19: Some of us need medical care. You have no right
[38:33] Speaker 19: to hold us here.
[38:34] Speaker 10: Only the right to find out who tried to murder
[38:36] Speaker 10: forty people.
[38:37] Speaker 5: All right, Brandy, I'll handle this well.
[38:39] Speaker 7: Then it was murdered. I knew it.
[38:41] Speaker 4: Nah nah, Take it easy, folks, and you'll all be
[38:43] Speaker 4: out of here in a few minutes.
[38:45] Speaker 5: I said, quiet.
[38:46] Speaker 4: Everyone, Now we will call you up one by one.
[38:51] Speaker 4: All you have to do is tell us if this
[38:52] Speaker 4: piece of yellow leather pigskin.
[38:54] Speaker 5: Was part of your luggage. Enough, but he had to identify. Okay, Bradley,
[38:59] Speaker 5: you and Harry, we'll stay that was you.
[39:05] Speaker 10: Thirty six potential corpses lined up and filed past the
[39:09] Speaker 10: piece of yellow leather, none of them clinger. Then Sergeant
[39:13] Speaker 10: Cosky checked their addresses and gave them the routine spiel
[39:16] Speaker 10: about being available for further questioning, and he let them go.
[39:20] Speaker 4: There's not much more I can do. Tomorrow the earn
[39:23] Speaker 4: Ardix Dura takeover. I'll phone my report in my watch. Right,
[39:27] Speaker 4: it's just quarter to ten, Yeah, it's right, coming back
[39:31] Speaker 4: to town with me.
[39:32] Speaker 5: Well, if it's okay with.
[39:33] Speaker 10: You, stick around here to do a little checking on
[39:35] Speaker 10: my own, okay, And then I tell you what, if
[39:38] Speaker 10: anything hot comes, I'll call me at home.
[39:40] Speaker 5: Don't phone it into headquarters. I don't want them to think.
[39:42] Speaker 10: Perish the thought. Cosky gave me his home phone number
[39:52] Speaker 10: and left a little protting. And the baggage man remembered
[39:56] Speaker 10: seeing the yellow pigskin suitcase. And then came the first
[39:59] Speaker 10: big right, the baggage man found a delivery slipped from
[40:03] Speaker 10: the Minerva Messenger Service, testifying to the fact that they
[40:06] Speaker 10: delivered in good order one pigskin leather suitcase to be
[40:09] Speaker 10: checked on the ticket of one of the passengers, mister
[40:12] Speaker 10: Stephen Bradley. I found Bradley at his hotel. He hadn't
[40:16] Speaker 10: checked in yet. Then I called Sergeant Kolski. There was
[40:20] Speaker 10: no real welcome in his voice.
[40:22] Speaker 5: So glad you called Brandy got the single up top.
[40:25] Speaker 10: No, no, but I found out who owned that yellow bag.
[40:29] Speaker 10: Stephen Bradley, one of the passengers.
[40:32] Speaker 5: I remember him pick up.
[40:34] Speaker 10: I was not going to be that easy. He's not
[40:36] Speaker 10: going at the address he gave us.
[40:37] Speaker 5: I'll get him, all right, So that's who it him
[40:41] Speaker 5: by midnight.
[40:43] Speaker 10: Now it's twenty five to eleven at the Minerva Messenger
[40:48] Speaker 10: Company twenty four hour service. You will, mister.
[40:56] Speaker 5: The Brakes were with us.
[40:58] Speaker 10: The Minerva Messenger Company had a complete of the pickup
[41:00] Speaker 10: on the suitcase. They found an envelope in the mail
[41:03] Speaker 10: slot that evening with two dollar bills and a key
[41:06] Speaker 10: in it, and the tight written unsigned noted instructed them
[41:09] Speaker 10: to pick up a suitcase in the locker at the
[41:11] Speaker 10: Arlington Bus Depot and take it to the airport to
[41:14] Speaker 10: be checked on Stephen Bradley's ticket. It was nearly eleven
[41:18] Speaker 10: o'clock when I got to the bus station, and near
[41:20] Speaker 10: a row of long, unbooted telephones, there was a candy
[41:23] Speaker 10: and cigar stand.
[41:25] Speaker 6: Yes, sir, something for you.
[41:27] Speaker 10: Uh, those are the only payphones here.
[41:30] Speaker 14: Huh huh, no closed boots when it's quiet.
[41:33] Speaker 6: You should know some of the conversations I listened to.
[41:36] Speaker 10: I guess you make change for a lot of them.
[41:37] Speaker 14: Though, Yeah, drive me nuts. My boss don't like me
[41:41] Speaker 14: talking to men during working hours.
[41:43] Speaker 10: Well, I'm disqualified. I'm a reporter.
[41:46] Speaker 6: Reporter, no kidding, no kidding.
[41:49] Speaker 10: I'm trying to locate a woman who phoned me from here.
[41:51] Speaker 10: She's about grow about twenty nine. Were you working then, yeah?
[41:55] Speaker 6: Yeah, what she looked like.
[41:56] Speaker 9: I don't know.
[41:57] Speaker 10: I don't know. She'd been crying. I'd say she was
[41:59] Speaker 10: in her thirties. Uh, kind of a sexy voice.
[42:02] Speaker 6: Twenty to nine. You say she was crying.
[42:05] Speaker 10: Well, toward the end of the conversation she started crying.
[42:08] Speaker 6: I think I know who you mean.
[42:09] Speaker 14: I talked to her for She came in about fifteen
[42:12] Speaker 14: minutes after eight, maybe twenty after she looked scared, like
[42:16] Speaker 14: she'd run away from somebody, so I watched her.
[42:18] Speaker 5: That's my slow time you said you'd.
[42:20] Speaker 10: Talk to her.
[42:21] Speaker 14: She asked me if anyone had left to note for
[42:23] Speaker 14: Missus Kuran or Koran, some name like that. Oh, Missus
[42:28] Speaker 14: how Koran, that's what it was.
[42:31] Speaker 10: You think she was Missus Koran?
[42:32] Speaker 6: I know it, she.
[42:33] Speaker 14: Said if anybody asked for her, but she'd be back
[42:36] Speaker 14: a few minutes later she made the call.
[42:38] Speaker 6: It must have been to you. She burst out, crying
[42:40] Speaker 6: and hung up.
[42:41] Speaker 10: What did she look like like?
[42:42] Speaker 14: I wished I looked, dark hair, five to three or four,
[42:46] Speaker 14: beautiful figure when you're looking for her. She was alone,
[42:51] Speaker 14: nobody with her that I know of, and she got
[42:53] Speaker 14: on the bust all alone.
[42:55] Speaker 10: You wouldn't happen to know what bus?
[42:56] Speaker 14: Sure of the lake Forest bus? She asked me what
[42:59] Speaker 14: time it left in I told her day.
[43:02] Speaker 6: That should make it a cinch. Her name is missus
[43:04] Speaker 6: hal Koran and she lives in Lake Forest.
[43:07] Speaker 10: That's almost too easy. It looks like she loaded you
[43:09] Speaker 10: with information knowing that I'd be around in a way.
[43:13] Speaker 6: Maybe I don't blame it. What's your name, Marian?
[43:16] Speaker 10: Why one of the story breaks, I'll share my byline
[43:19] Speaker 10: with him.
[43:20] Speaker 6: I don't know exactly what you mean, but I'll.
[43:21] Speaker 5: Move for it.
[43:28] Speaker 10: I was looking for a missus hal Kuran. The girl
[43:31] Speaker 10: would call me from the bus station to so accurately
[43:33] Speaker 10: prophesy the bomb explosion on the Denver bomb plane. And
[43:37] Speaker 10: she left the trail easy enough for a tender foot
[43:39] Speaker 10: boy scout to follow. In less than an hour, I
[43:41] Speaker 10: was pounding on her door. Open the door, please, who
[43:47] Speaker 10: is it? Let me in? What do you want? I
[43:51] Speaker 10: want to talk to you.
[43:54] Speaker 6: What do you want?
[43:55] Speaker 10: I'm Randy Stone, missus Koran.
[43:57] Speaker 5: I don't know you.
[43:58] Speaker 6: Please get off.
[43:59] Speaker 7: So you called me earlier.
[44:00] Speaker 10: This evening at the Chicago Star. Remember you're a mistaken
[44:04] Speaker 10: missus Karan. You warned me that the bomb would explode
[44:07] Speaker 10: in a Denver bound plane.
[44:09] Speaker 5: Well it did?
[44:10] Speaker 10: What plane?
[44:12] Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about.
[44:13] Speaker 10: Well, let's face it, you're not very good at this
[44:16] Speaker 10: sort of thing, missus Koran. You gave yourself away half
[44:19] Speaker 10: a dozen times. First, you made your phone call from
[44:21] Speaker 10: a bus depot. I found out which one was by
[44:24] Speaker 10: tracing the baggage back to the Arlington. That's what you're
[44:26] Speaker 10: called for. You're crazy.
[44:27] Speaker 6: I wasn't out of the apartment all day.
[44:29] Speaker 10: And you walked up to a bright young girl with
[44:31] Speaker 10: the candy counter and asked her if there was any
[44:32] Speaker 10: messages for a missus hal Koran. I talked to that girl.
[44:35] Speaker 10: She described you to a t once a more.
[44:39] Speaker 6: You have no right to talk to me like this.
[44:41] Speaker 10: I'm just trying to refresh your memory. You took the
[44:45] Speaker 10: Lake Forest bus correct. No, it could have made it
[44:48] Speaker 10: easier if you wanted me to find you, and I
[44:50] Speaker 10: think you did.
[44:51] Speaker 6: I never thought of stupid. Stupid.
[44:54] Speaker 10: You wanted me to stop that plane and get to
[44:55] Speaker 10: the personal responsible, didn't you.
[44:57] Speaker 6: I tried to stop him, a big hell not to
[44:59] Speaker 6: do it, but he was like a crazy man.
[45:02] Speaker 10: Your husband. He engineered this little thing.
[45:04] Speaker 6: Poor hell, poor mixed up hell.
[45:07] Speaker 10: Well, give me a description of him. We gotta him
[45:09] Speaker 10: picked up.
[45:09] Speaker 6: No, it's too late, I tell you. He said he
[45:12] Speaker 6: was going to take his own life after the bomb
[45:15] Speaker 6: went off.
[45:29] Speaker 2: NBC is bringing you Night Feet, starring Frank Lovejoy as
[45:33] Speaker 2: Randy Stone. This month of September, many thousands of children
[45:38] Speaker 2: will be going back to school four times daily. These
[45:42] Speaker 2: children will be walking to and from school. You are
[45:46] Speaker 2: urged to be careful, to be watchful, to be safe.
[45:50] Speaker 2: In one year's time, sixty one thousand children were killed
[45:54] Speaker 2: or injured by motor vehicles. Watch for children darting out
[45:58] Speaker 2: from that blind spot between parked cards. Watch for them
[46:02] Speaker 2: as they get on and off school buses. Watch for
[46:05] Speaker 2: children playing on the sidewalks and crossing the streets going
[46:09] Speaker 2: to and from school. Remember this a child made dare
[46:15] Speaker 2: so drive with care. And now back to night Beat
[46:26] Speaker 2: and Randy Stone.
[46:28] Speaker 10: I got his description and phoned it into police headquarters.
[46:31] Speaker 10: I asked him the sergeant Kowski had brought in Bradley,
[46:34] Speaker 10: and they told me you hadn't. All a while I've
[46:36] Speaker 10: been on the phone. Missus Kuran sat there crying. Sergeant,
[46:40] Speaker 10: if you locate Kowski, tell him I met. What's the
[46:42] Speaker 10: number here, missus Kuran, Evergreen three one O seven four.
[46:46] Speaker 10: It's Evergreen three one O seven four.
[46:50] Speaker 6: Did it's my faulty? It's just like I did it.
[46:53] Speaker 10: There's no point in blaming yourself, missus Kuran.
[46:57] Speaker 6: It was the quarrel.
[47:00] Speaker 16: And Bradley started the business together. They were equal partners.
[47:04] Speaker 10: Missus Kran, I'm a reporter. Maybe you'd better not say anything.
[47:07] Speaker 6: No, just like I killed him.
[47:10] Speaker 20: I've got to talk to someone.
[47:11] Speaker 10: He may not be dead.
[47:13] Speaker 17: About about six years ago, Hal gambled with company fund.
[47:18] Speaker 17: Bradley found out and said he prosecuted.
[47:20] Speaker 10: The money wasn't returned.
[47:21] Speaker 17: Where could Hal raise six thousand dollars?
[47:23] Speaker 10: Oh, it's quite a mile of greenbacks?
[47:26] Speaker 6: Like they made a deal.
[47:28] Speaker 17: Bradley was to get Hal's interest and agreed to keep
[47:31] Speaker 17: Hell on as one of the shops foremen. After that,
[47:35] Speaker 17: he lost all his initiative. He stayed a laborer in
[47:37] Speaker 17: a business he created. I begged him to break away,
[47:39] Speaker 17: but he wouldn't be quarreled about it often.
[47:42] Speaker 6: I didn't know what would lead to this.
[47:45] Speaker 10: Maybe you better try and have a rest.
[47:47] Speaker 17: Last night Hal came home from work. I've never seen
[47:51] Speaker 17: him work so old and beaten.
[47:58] Speaker 5: Ellen.
[48:00] Speaker 3: Just a minute, h.
[48:06] Speaker 6: How come you brought all your things home from the office.
[48:08] Speaker 5: Let's not talk about it now?
[48:09] Speaker 10: And did how something's wrong? Now?
[48:12] Speaker 5: After supper?
[48:14] Speaker 6: It's always not now with you is to tell me how?
[48:18] Speaker 10: All right? I lost my job? How to work?
[48:21] Speaker 5: Hand? Lost your jump? Hell, I'll get another one.
[48:26] Speaker 6: Bradley fired you?
[48:27] Speaker 5: Why it wasn't Bradley with new people?
[48:30] Speaker 10: What new people? So?
[48:31] Speaker 5: Why is it.
[48:32] Speaker 6: You never start from the beginning, what new people?
[48:34] Speaker 10: Bradley sold him the business They didn't want me, so.
[48:37] Speaker 6: On through Bradley sold out that business is half yours.
[48:42] Speaker 5: Hell, we've been over that before.
[48:44] Speaker 6: Without a fight. You let him sell out without opening
[48:47] Speaker 6: your mouth. What kind of a.
[48:48] Speaker 1: Man are you?
[48:48] Speaker 5: Are I supposed to do? Hit him over the hand?
[48:50] Speaker 6: That takes nerves? It was a dirty rotten and he
[48:55] Speaker 6: didn't say anything to you that it was all over.
[48:57] Speaker 10: Huh.
[48:58] Speaker 4: Came up this morning and said goodbye, it's going to
[49:00] Speaker 4: the coast to live tomorrow night, to.
[49:03] Speaker 6: The coast with your money. And you just stood there
[49:08] Speaker 6: and said good luck.
[49:09] Speaker 5: Bradley.
[49:10] Speaker 6: Oh, how this is the last? So I can't go
[49:12] Speaker 6: on living with a man who won't fight back. Finally
[49:15] Speaker 6: and competent.
[49:17] Speaker 5: Shall I kill him? Is that what you want? You?
[49:20] Speaker 9: Kill?
[49:21] Speaker 11: You, you coward.
[49:23] Speaker 5: I'm no coward, Ellenor and I'll prove it to you.
[49:27] Speaker 10: I'm going on now he'll come back.
[49:28] Speaker 6: What are you going to do?
[49:29] Speaker 5: What you want?
[49:30] Speaker 7: Kill Bradley?
[49:31] Speaker 5: Kill Steve?
[49:31] Speaker 17: People who said anything about killing just go up to
[49:34] Speaker 17: him and demand what's coming to you?
[49:36] Speaker 5: That's not what you really want, is it? Oh?
[49:37] Speaker 6: Try talking?
[49:38] Speaker 7: Since how I'm.
[49:39] Speaker 5: Talking it for the first time in my life.
[49:40] Speaker 8: How come back?
[49:42] Speaker 9: How?
[49:51] Speaker 10: And this was last night?
[49:52] Speaker 17: I didn't know it, meant it this morning, brought it home.
[49:57] Speaker 17: He had a gun too. He said he'd kill me
[50:00] Speaker 17: if I tried to interfere.
[50:01] Speaker 6: He was crazy.
[50:03] Speaker 10: What did he do with the bomb?
[50:06] Speaker 6: Put it in the suitcase and made me.
[50:08] Speaker 17: Go with him to the bus depot, put the suitcase
[50:11] Speaker 17: in the locker. Later he had a messenger pick up
[50:14] Speaker 17: the key, checked the bag through.
[50:16] Speaker 5: To the plane.
[50:17] Speaker 10: But why a bomb? Why why take the lives of
[50:20] Speaker 10: forty people to murder?
[50:22] Speaker 6: One man told you he lost his mind. He wouldn't
[50:25] Speaker 6: talk to me all day. He just watched me every minute.
[50:28] Speaker 10: And after the messenger came he said.
[50:30] Speaker 5: Goodbye to me.
[50:32] Speaker 6: He said, as soon as Bradley was dead, he'd kill himself.
[50:36] Speaker 10: Oh, we've got to find him. When he finds out
[50:37] Speaker 10: Bradley wasn't killed, he'll go gunning for him.
[50:40] Speaker 6: But Bradley isn't it. But the bomb you said it
[50:45] Speaker 6: went off.
[50:46] Speaker 10: Well it did, but the plane was still on the ground.
[50:48] Speaker 10: Your call was in time.
[50:49] Speaker 5: After all, nobody was killed or no matter.
[50:55] Speaker 10: Don't you understand nobody was killed?
[50:57] Speaker 5: Nobody else?
[51:01] Speaker 6: He killed himself and nothing for help. Even this last
[51:06] Speaker 6: thing couldn't come off right for him.
[51:09] Speaker 10: Well, I'm not so sure he's dead, missus Kuran. He
[51:12] Speaker 10: may have been at the airport when the barmb went off.
[51:14] Speaker 10: He may be looking for Bradley now and with a gun.
[51:18] Speaker 6: He's dead, I tell you, he's killed himself.
[51:27] Speaker 10: The outburst capered down, and Missus Koran fell back, exhausted
[51:31] Speaker 10: on the couch. I called the police again. Still no news.
[51:34] Speaker 10: Neither Bradley nor Karan had been located. Missus Clan had
[51:38] Speaker 10: fallen asleep, and I sat opposer in and waited. I
[51:41] Speaker 10: heard someone opening the door and I turned around. He
[51:43] Speaker 10: stood there in the doorway, an old, old man in
[51:47] Speaker 10: his early thirties. His shoulders sagged, and there was a
[51:50] Speaker 10: look about, a dejection about him. And he blinked stupidly
[51:53] Speaker 10: at me, and then he walked slowly over to the woman.
[51:56] Speaker 5: On the couch.
[52:00] Speaker 10: What's the matter with her?
[52:02] Speaker 5: Ellen?
[52:03] Speaker 10: No, let her alone, Let her alone, she's exhausted.
[52:06] Speaker 5: You're hell Kuran. I got to talk to her, Hellen,
[52:12] Speaker 5: wake up, what do you want?
[52:15] Speaker 10: It's me?
[52:16] Speaker 5: Hell? You You didn't I couldn't do it.
[52:20] Speaker 10: I couldn't go through with it.
[52:22] Speaker 6: H he couldn't do it. He couldn't do it.
[52:29] Speaker 10: She's hysterical. That's what's the matter with her?
[52:34] Speaker 6: Away from me?
[52:36] Speaker 20: You touch me.
[52:37] Speaker 6: I hate you.
[52:38] Speaker 10: I'm arresting you, mister Karana, citizens arrest me?
[52:43] Speaker 5: What for?
[52:44] Speaker 10: Well, just to remind you of the bomb in Bradley's
[52:46] Speaker 10: suitcase at that plane had n't been granted and your
[52:49] Speaker 10: wife hadn't called me?
[52:50] Speaker 5: What are you talking about her?
[52:51] Speaker 4: I couldn't go through with it. Do you understand I
[52:54] Speaker 4: was going to but, like Ellen says, I got no
[52:58] Speaker 4: cuts when.
[52:59] Speaker 5: It comes to a pinch, I got.
[53:01] Speaker 6: No p How lying to you any good? Haven't you
[53:03] Speaker 6: even got this straight to admit what you've done.
[53:05] Speaker 10: I took it out of the locker and brought it
[53:07] Speaker 10: home early this afternoon. You were out all and I
[53:10] Speaker 10: disconnected the fuse and I put it in this drawer.
[53:13] Speaker 10: And that's the truth.
[53:16] Speaker 5: Right in here.
[53:17] Speaker 10: Come here, myster, I'll show you well it was here.
[53:25] Speaker 10: I put it here myself.
[53:27] Speaker 6: Oh it's funny. Oh if it's funny, the mess he
[53:30] Speaker 6: makes the things.
[53:31] Speaker 10: I'm following the police to come and gets you. Corng
[53:35] Speaker 10: put that phone down. I'll give me that gun, correct
[53:39] Speaker 10: I mean, I put the bomb in that drawer, somebody
[53:43] Speaker 10: took it out of gun Please, Hell, what's the youth?
[53:46] Speaker 5: Tell them somebody took the bomb out of the drawer
[53:48] Speaker 5: and they put up I'm leaving.
[53:50] Speaker 10: How long do you think you'll last?
[53:52] Speaker 5: Long enough, don't.
[54:00] Speaker 10: I found the cops again and brought them up to date,
[54:02] Speaker 10: and then I went looking for him. I thingured he
[54:05] Speaker 10: might be hiding close by, and a few minutes the
[54:08] Speaker 10: neighborhood were swarming with police. So I went back to
[54:10] Speaker 10: stay with Missus Koran. I heard some movement behind her door.
[54:14] Speaker 10: I was sure it was Koran. I wanted to get
[54:17] Speaker 10: in quietly so that I could grab him from behind.
[54:22] Speaker 10: A man was standing there Missus Koran when I got inside,
[54:25] Speaker 10: but it wasn't her husband.
[54:27] Speaker 6: Bradly, what mister Stone, Oh didn't.
[54:30] Speaker 10: No, No, we haven't got him yet. It won't be
[54:34] Speaker 10: long though.
[54:35] Speaker 7: This is the newspaper man you told me about Ellen.
[54:38] Speaker 10: Yes, well you've been keeping yourself, Bradley. A lot of
[54:41] Speaker 10: uniformed men have been looking for you. Oh.
[54:43] Speaker 6: He knew at the airport that Hall had put the
[54:44] Speaker 6: bomb there, didn't you.
[54:45] Speaker 19: Steve, Yes, I recognized the letter I had given that
[54:49] Speaker 19: back to him for a birthday present.
[54:50] Speaker 10: Why didn't you tell the sergeant?
[54:52] Speaker 7: I wanted to square it my own way.
[54:54] Speaker 6: I tried to stop it. I tried all I could.
[54:57] Speaker 5: All right, Hell, I locked the door line up against
[55:02] Speaker 5: the wall. Hor of me.
[55:06] Speaker 10: Give me that gun, Karan, get back. I'll shoot you.
[55:11] Speaker 10: I mean it while the cops will be here in
[55:13] Speaker 10: a Minnit.
[55:14] Speaker 6: That's all I need, Darling, put the gun down.
[55:21] Speaker 7: We can settle this without guns. Cram.
[55:23] Speaker 20: It came to me all of a sudden, a few
[55:27] Speaker 20: minutes ago, I got the turtle.
[55:30] Speaker 5: I did take that bomb, Howl.
[55:32] Speaker 10: He's lying.
[55:33] Speaker 6: He never came home all day?
[55:34] Speaker 10: Why?
[55:34] Speaker 5: Yes, myself?
[55:36] Speaker 4: Who put it back in the suitcase and had it delivered?
[55:40] Speaker 4: The answer was so simple I had to laugh. Ellen,
[55:45] Speaker 4: she took it back.
[55:47] Speaker 10: Karan, you're not on trial here. Save your defense for
[55:50] Speaker 10: the right place. I'd suggest that you don't move. But
[55:54] Speaker 10: he tries to stop me. Now gets killed. Why bring
[55:56] Speaker 10: Ellen into this?
[55:57] Speaker 5: Why don't you be man enough to take Yes? Told
[56:00] Speaker 5: that too.
[56:01] Speaker 6: Why would anybody got to stop it?
[56:03] Speaker 5: And it hit me.
[56:05] Speaker 4: Helldn'd been working me up on Bradley, not because he
[56:09] Speaker 4: was running out on me, but on her.
[56:12] Speaker 5: Get it.
[56:15] Speaker 4: When I told her Bradley was leaving. I couldn't understand
[56:18] Speaker 4: why she went wild like that, And I started remembering
[56:22] Speaker 4: little things like useless trips Bradley would send me on,
[56:27] Speaker 4: stuff like walking into a room and seeing him laughing
[56:29] Speaker 4: about something. You know, that special kind of laugh and ridiculous.
[56:35] Speaker 9: Hell.
[56:35] Speaker 4: And he sued he was going to run out on us.
[56:37] Speaker 4: She she wanted him dead. And she took the bomb
[56:41] Speaker 4: out of the drawer, rigged it up again, and sent
[56:43] Speaker 4: it to the airport.
[56:44] Speaker 5: You see the way they added our flies.
[56:46] Speaker 6: Every one of it lies.
[56:47] Speaker 7: You prove all.
[56:48] Speaker 10: I can court here in good shape. Hell, I can't
[56:51] Speaker 10: wait for the court to straighten my accounts. I just
[56:54] Speaker 10: got the total to night, and I got to pay
[56:56] Speaker 10: it off. Steve.
[56:58] Speaker 6: He's going to kill you.
[57:00] Speaker 7: You're not yourself. What do you want money? I'll give
[57:04] Speaker 7: you some.
[57:05] Speaker 6: Look, you will make it right with your help, he
[57:07] Speaker 6: will tonight tonight.
[57:10] Speaker 5: I got the picture Gravely Ellen and how.
[57:16] Speaker 4: Ellen Bradley and how how All was like, no, that's
[57:21] Speaker 4: not through.
[57:21] Speaker 5: You know when it all came to me after I left.
[57:24] Speaker 20: You a little while ago, Ellen, I didn't go running
[57:28] Speaker 20: through the streets looking for a place to hide.
[57:31] Speaker 10: I went to the apartment house next door. I sat
[57:35] Speaker 10: down on the fire escape.
[57:38] Speaker 5: Open and keep quiet.
[57:39] Speaker 10: All of you know what room I could see from
[57:43] Speaker 10: the fire escape this one, Ellen, I saw Grady come in. Hi.
[57:51] Speaker 6: It didn't mean anything.
[57:52] Speaker 10: You ran up to him, and I saw a look
[57:54] Speaker 10: on your face, the same look I used to see
[57:57] Speaker 10: when we were first married. Oh, Cosky's got a gun.
[58:02] Speaker 5: Un You took that look away from me and gave
[58:05] Speaker 5: it to Bradley.
[58:06] Speaker 4: That made it a clean sweep for him. My business,
[58:09] Speaker 4: my job, my wife fell I'll make it right.
[58:11] Speaker 5: Just give me a chance, you, Bradley.
[58:14] Speaker 20: You don't owe me anything. It's Ellen, but she's taken
[58:19] Speaker 20: from me. There's only one way to square me.
[58:25] Speaker 6: How you gotta kill me.
[58:29] Speaker 10: I believe the court will too.
[58:32] Speaker 6: You love me? Hell, don't you love me?
[58:36] Speaker 10: Yes?
[58:36] Speaker 5: Ellen, I love you.
[58:40] Speaker 10: You wouldn't Karen? Good Bye?
[58:50] Speaker 5: He did it? He killed it?
[58:54] Speaker 10: Yeah, Yes, I was in the middle of that one.
[59:14] Speaker 10: Now I've got to write it up for tomorrow Morning's
[59:16] Speaker 10: I O dun now whose point of view will I
[59:19] Speaker 10: handle it? From? Hell's You couldn't do that. He's a murderer.
[59:24] Speaker 10: You wouldn't want to sympathize with him. Bradley's What's he
[59:29] Speaker 10: done that a million other men hadn't? And Ellen that
[59:33] Speaker 10: reminds me of a song. Please don't talk about me
[59:36] Speaker 10: when I'm gone. Now we better leave Ellen Oordo is too,
[59:42] Speaker 10: how about a nice bit of the green exhibit at
[59:44] Speaker 10: the museum.
[59:46] Speaker 21: Coffee Boy.

[1:02:13] Speaker 2: they're now even better.
[1:02:15] Speaker 1: Welcome back. I have to admit when I heard this
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: episode of Night Beat, I was taken aback a bit,
[1:02:22] Speaker 1: just because it seems so different from the other episodes.
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: It wasn't till later that I heard the Silent Men episode,
[1:02:30] Speaker 1: which makes a lot more sense of it. As a story.
[1:02:35] Speaker 1: It tries to take something that.
[1:02:37] Speaker 5: Was told for a federal.
[1:02:40] Speaker 1: Law enforcement officer and tell it for a reporter, and
[1:02:46] Speaker 1: I think they're able to cover most things pretty well,
[1:02:50] Speaker 1: there are some things though that just are awkward. Randy
[1:02:54] Speaker 1: Stone making a citizen's arrest that has never happened in
[1:02:59] Speaker 1: any other episode to not be Now, to understand why
[1:03:02] Speaker 1: this episode ended up on Not Beat, you have to
[1:03:06] Speaker 1: understand what was going on with that series. It had
[1:03:10] Speaker 1: been sponsored by perhaps Blue Ribbon Beer throughout the summer
[1:03:16] Speaker 1: of nineteen fifty two, but in September that sponsorship was
[1:03:20] Speaker 1: over and it was essentially at this point a sustained
[1:03:26] Speaker 1: network program that would leave the air before October. So
[1:03:30] Speaker 1: there's a sense in which these four episodes in September
[1:03:34] Speaker 1: were effectively playing out the string for the series. So
[1:03:38] Speaker 1: if you're Warren Lewis and you've already got the script
[1:03:41] Speaker 1: you wrote for The Silent Men, it's like, let's turn
[1:03:45] Speaker 1: this into a not Beat episode. And it worked to
[1:03:49] Speaker 1: get the job done, but it doesn't come off as
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: very consistent with this series, as evidenced by the somewhat
[1:03:57] Speaker 1: rambling into the episode, which was trying to get that
[1:04:02] Speaker 1: not Beat ending. When Randy would philosophically sum up something
[1:04:08] Speaker 1: about the case, often with keen insights, here it just
[1:04:12] Speaker 1: felt like he was rambling on a bet. The one
[1:04:16] Speaker 1: thing I will say for this episode is that the
[1:04:20] Speaker 1: domestic plot works a lot better, even though that's still
[1:04:24] Speaker 1: not typical for not Beat the way it played out.
[1:04:28] Speaker 1: It was also interesting that we had another case where
[1:04:31] Speaker 1: an actor, in this case, Paul Freese, played essentially the
[1:04:37] Speaker 1: identical character in both episodes. Now it's time to thank
[1:04:43] Speaker 1: our Patreon supporter of the day, and I want to
[1:04:45] Speaker 1: thank John, Patreon supporter since November of twenty twenty four,

[1:05:29] Speaker 22: Get some medical do better. And I promise the FBI
[1:05:31] Speaker 22: months ago we cracked this case, but you're laying down
[1:05:33] Speaker 22: on the job for Nick and when action I want it,
[1:05:35] Speaker 22: fest Yes, sir.
[1:05:37] Speaker 5: And another thing, why.
[1:05:38] Speaker 22: Haven't you rounded up this man, Simon Templar Fellow they
[1:05:41] Speaker 22: call the saint.
[1:05:42] Speaker 23: Well, you can't arrest a man without evidence, Commissioner, and
[1:05:44] Speaker 23: get some.
[1:05:45] Speaker 22: Everybody knows the man's a crook, one of the most
[1:05:46] Speaker 22: notorious crooks in the country.
[1:05:48] Speaker 23: We've never been able to prove it, Commissioner.
[1:05:50] Speaker 22: In a minute, you'll be telling me you've fallen for
[1:05:52] Speaker 22: this stuff about him being the modern Robin Hood.
[1:05:55] Speaker 23: Well, the things he does generally seem to turn out
[1:05:58] Speaker 23: all right. He's even helped me a lot of time.
[1:06:00] Speaker 22: Oh, Fernack, you must be getting soft in the head.
[1:06:04] Speaker 22: What's the matter with you? Are you sick or something?
[1:06:08] Speaker 23: But as a matter of facts, here I am. I'm
[1:06:11] Speaker 23: suffering from indigestion.
[1:06:13] Speaker 22: Indigestion. Oh, why don't you get something for it? Why
[1:06:17] Speaker 22: don't you get some miracle tea?
[1:06:18] Speaker 23: Is that the stuff they advertise in the radio?
[1:06:20] Speaker 7: Yes?
[1:06:21] Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime.
