[1:12] Speaker 1: of radio adaptations of films her own as well as others,
[1:17] Speaker 1: and so essentially sitting there looking at all of these adaptations,
[1:24] Speaker 1: all of the great leading men she played beside, I
[1:29] Speaker 1: was having difficulty narrowing down which episodes to bring to you,
[1:34] Speaker 1: so I ask my Patreon supporters for some help, and
[1:39] Speaker 1: Gary writes in on Patreon, I would like to hear Suspicion,
[1:44] Speaker 1: and that's what we're going to bring you. Suspicion starring

[2:16] Speaker 3: The Lux Radio Theater brings you William Powell and Olivia
[2:20] Speaker 3: de Heavilen in Suspicion, Ladies and Gentlemen, your producer, mister
[2:25] Speaker 3: Cecil B.
[2:26] Speaker 4: De Mill, Greetings from Hollywood, Ladies and gentlemen. Not long ago,
[2:38] Speaker 4: a noted editor sat down to figure out what he
[2:40] Speaker 4: called the basic elements of human interest, that is, the
[2:44] Speaker 4: things that interest people most and motivate their thoughts and actions. Love,
[2:49] Speaker 4: of course, was at the top of the list, and
[2:52] Speaker 4: close after love came feared and then curiosity. Goodnight in
[2:57] Speaker 4: the Lux Radio Theater play the KO screen hit Suspicion.
[3:02] Speaker 4: We have a mixture of these elements, two people very
[3:05] Speaker 4: much in love whose lives are shadowed by a dark
[3:08] Speaker 4: fear and bitter curiosity. And out of this combination comes
[3:14] Speaker 4: what I think you'll agree is one of the most
[3:15] Speaker 4: absorbing grammars of our time, and to do full justice
[3:19] Speaker 4: to it, we have as our stars that able master
[3:22] Speaker 4: of mystery, William Powell and the ever versatil and lovely
[3:27] Speaker 4: Olivia de haviln. In just a moment, we'll start to
[3:30] Speaker 4: satisfy your curiosity, But first, don't forget that we want
[3:34] Speaker 4: you to satisfy our curiosity on an important matter, our
[3:38] Speaker 4: tenth anniversary celebration four weeks from to day. We'd like
[3:42] Speaker 4: you to help us select the play and stars you
[3:45] Speaker 4: want to hear on that eventful date, October the sixteenth.
[3:49] Speaker 4: Write your choice on a postcard. Address it to me
[3:52] Speaker 4: at Post Office Box nine, Hollywood, twenty eight, California. Your
[3:56] Speaker 4: suggestions and your interests are what makes the Luxe Theater
[4:01] Speaker 4: a truly national institution, just as you have purchasers of
[4:04] Speaker 4: lux toilet Soap help raise this curtain for you every
[4:08] Speaker 4: Monday night, so you really get two prizes and one package,
[4:12] Speaker 4: a fine product and fine entertainment. Clocke is fighting now
[4:17] Speaker 4: at a curtain time. And here's the first act of Suspicion,
[4:20] Speaker 4: starring William Powell as Johnny and Olivia de Haviland as Lena,
[4:25] Speaker 4: with Charles Irwin as beakie, Let me go, Let me.
[4:31] Speaker 5: Go, stop be a little fool.
[4:33] Speaker 2: Let me go.
[4:40] Speaker 4: On a hilltop overlooking the English countryside, the trees bend
[4:44] Speaker 4: low before the morning wind, smoke gray clouds weaves swiftly
[4:49] Speaker 4: across a smoke gray sky. Against the sky, I scilhouetted
[4:54] Speaker 4: the figures.
[4:54] Speaker 2: Of a man and a woman. A man's arms.
[4:57] Speaker 4: Are about her shoulders. She struggles wildly, frantically, then breaks
[5:01] Speaker 4: away again. His arms reach out, her hands are caught
[5:05] Speaker 4: and held as an advice.
[5:10] Speaker 5: What did you think I was trying to do?
[5:12] Speaker 2: Kill you?
[5:13] Speaker 5: Nothing less than murder could justify such a violent self defense.
[5:16] Speaker 2: Look at you?
[5:16] Speaker 6: Let me go.
[5:18] Speaker 5: Oh, I'm just beginning to understand. You thought I was
[5:21] Speaker 5: going to kiss you, didn't you?
[5:23] Speaker 6: Weren't you?
[5:23] Speaker 2: Of course not.
[5:25] Speaker 5: I was merely reaching around you, trying to fetch your hair.
[5:28] Speaker 6: What's wrong with my hair?
[5:29] Speaker 5: Well, I'm glad you asked me that. It would have
[5:31] Speaker 5: been extremely discourteous for me to bring the subject up.
[5:34] Speaker 6: Are you serious?
[5:35] Speaker 5: Of course I'm serious.
[5:38] Speaker 6: Away, just give me the feelings. You're laughing at me.
[5:41] Speaker 6: I give you my word, what's wrong with my hair?
[5:43] Speaker 5: Let me show you? I goes back away, I'm not
[5:46] Speaker 5: going to hurt you. Let me see. Yeah, this will
[5:51] Speaker 5: do it.
[5:53] Speaker 7: What are you thinking of a week ago?
[5:55] Speaker 6: I've never even seen you.
[5:57] Speaker 5: Oh, now here we are on a Sunday morning, miss Church.
[6:00] Speaker 5: While I unbraid your hair.
[6:03] Speaker 7: I think you've done enough fool in my hair.
[6:05] Speaker 5: Yeah, I got a mirror. You look splendid.
[6:08] Speaker 7: I must be quite a novel if I contrast to
[6:10] Speaker 7: the women you're photographed with in the newspapers.
[6:14] Speaker 5: Oh well, how do you like your hair? Don't screw
[6:17] Speaker 5: your face up like that. It looks like a monkey.
[6:20] Speaker 5: What do your family call you? Monkey face?
[6:22] Speaker 6: I'll have to go now. I shall be late to
[6:24] Speaker 6: luncheon anyway.
[6:26] Speaker 7: If my father saw me come home both late and beautiful,
[6:29] Speaker 7: you might have a stroke.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Are you sure Massine isn't in her room? Button?
[6:42] Speaker 6: I knocked her just before I announced that. She said
[6:44] Speaker 6: she was going to church.
[6:45] Speaker 3: Oh what were you saying?
[6:47] Speaker 2: Just before?
[6:47] Speaker 8: My dear about Lena?
[6:49] Speaker 6: I do wish she'd get married.

[7:02] Speaker 6: What's wrong with that?
[7:03] Speaker 5: The Old Maid's a respectable institution, and Lena has intellect
[7:07] Speaker 5: and a fine solid character.

[29:27] Speaker 5: I'm so sorry, Darling, terribly sorry. This telegram just came
[29:31] Speaker 5: from the doctor. Tells what happened.
[29:33] Speaker 9: Telegram, deeply regret.
[29:36] Speaker 5: Your father died earlier this morning in heart failure. Your
[29:40] Speaker 5: mother wishes you could come at once.
[29:42] Speaker 9: Oh enough, a little.
[29:58] Speaker 5: One nasty week for you. I'd be glad to get
[30:01] Speaker 5: your home men, you ever have any regrets you married me?
[30:08] Speaker 6: Why do you ask?
[30:09] Speaker 2: S Well?
[30:11] Speaker 5: I was thinking of the will. Seems pretty obvious that
[30:14] Speaker 5: your father would have left you a lot more than
[30:16] Speaker 5: his portious if you've than anybody else with missus? John
[30:18] Speaker 5: as Good?
[30:19] Speaker 6: Oh that's what you meant.
[30:20] Speaker 5: You have an answer my question?
[30:23] Speaker 6: What about you? Have you any regrets?
[30:27] Speaker 5: Want your face? Marrying you is the one thing I've
[30:30] Speaker 5: never changed my mind about.
[30:32] Speaker 6: Do you really mean that, Johnny?
[30:33] Speaker 5: Yes, I really mean that. I want nothing but to
[30:36] Speaker 5: spend the rest of my life with you. If you

[30:39] Speaker 2: First, I would die first.
[30:43] Speaker 5: Well, listen, what about you?
[30:46] Speaker 6: I couldn't stop loving you if I tried?
[30:49] Speaker 5: Have you tried?
[30:50] Speaker 2: Yes? Once?
[30:53] Speaker 7: When and I found out you lost your job with
[30:58] Speaker 7: Captain Elbeck.
[31:00] Speaker 6: How long do you know since last Friday? Who told
[31:04] Speaker 6: you Captain Neilbert? I met him?
[31:09] Speaker 2: Did he tell you?
[31:10] Speaker 5: Why?
[31:11] Speaker 3: No?
[31:13] Speaker 6: I suppose you tell me?
[31:14] Speaker 4: Why?
[31:15] Speaker 5: Oh? Well, we just didn't get along.
[31:20] Speaker 2: I say, it's quite nice here shall we stop at at.
[31:22] Speaker 5: To see hell? Yeah? Quite a drop off this cliff,
[31:29] Speaker 5: wouldn't it.
[31:30] Speaker 6: Why didn't you get along with Captain Mailbrick?
[31:33] Speaker 5: Oh? I don't know. He's a been an old folly,
[31:35] Speaker 5: you know, monkey face. I have always had the notion
[31:39] Speaker 5: that the secret of success is the start at the top.
[31:42] Speaker 5: A way to make money is to think in a
[31:44] Speaker 5: big way. Look at all this land, for instance, Look
[31:46] Speaker 5: at the view of these cliffs, and why isn't something
[31:49] Speaker 5: done about it? By ten thousand pounds or still about
[31:53] Speaker 5: a twenty thousand, I could start a development here?
[31:56] Speaker 9: Or didn't he just twenty thousand pounds?
[31:57] Speaker 5: Huh? What's sday like? Ten thousand? Would thirty thousand pounds?
[32:02] Speaker 5: That's all I need?
[32:06] Speaker 4: Right?
[32:07] Speaker 2: You can save their old name of course?
[32:10] Speaker 5: Now are you see, Biki?
[32:11] Speaker 8: This is the ground plan, wonderful old I need to
[32:14] Speaker 8: put a large hotel up there on the cliff there.
[32:16] Speaker 5: That's the idea.
[32:17] Speaker 6: Hello, what's going on in here, pokey face?
[32:20] Speaker 5: We're organizing a real estate company. We're about to buy
[32:23] Speaker 5: a very beautiful piece of land right by the sea.
[32:25] Speaker 5: What of you?
[32:26] Speaker 2: What? Sun? What?
[32:29] Speaker 5: Then we sell pop the profit?
[32:31] Speaker 6: I see?
[32:31] Speaker 7: But you you'll need financing for all this?
[32:34] Speaker 9: Of course?
[32:34] Speaker 6: Well have you found someone to put up the money?
[32:36] Speaker 4: Of cause?
[32:37] Speaker 9: Who me?
[32:39] Speaker 7: Oh?
[32:39] Speaker 6: I see?
[32:40] Speaker 5: Well the idea is mine, but the money is Beakie's
[32:43] Speaker 5: and the corporation. Well, the beaky borrows against some securities
[32:47] Speaker 5: as in Paris our the company is going to be
[32:50] Speaker 5: in my name, Yes, darling, let me show you how
[32:53] Speaker 5: simple it is.
[32:54] Speaker 6: Does Beckie understand it?
[32:56] Speaker 2: Oh?
[32:56] Speaker 5: Perfectly, I think I bet your part, mister, Yes, I'll
[33:00] Speaker 5: want it on the proof. Oh, thank you, Edel, excuse me, Beckey, all.
[33:03] Speaker 6: Right, n man, Now, Vickie please explain it to me,
[33:07] Speaker 6: will you?
[33:08] Speaker 2: Will you see my dear girl, will you see me?
[33:11] Speaker 8: We buy up this land, then we sell a part
[33:13] Speaker 8: that gives us one hundred percent profit, then on the
[33:16] Speaker 8: other part we build something or other.
[33:19] Speaker 7: Oh yes, but from whom you buy the land to
[33:22] Speaker 7: whom you sell it?
[33:23] Speaker 5: WHOA? That shouldn't be difficult, do.

[34:13] Speaker 5: What double do you know about business?

[34:21] Speaker 6: Yes, but if it weren't good, well, that's my business,
[34:23] Speaker 6: not yours.
[34:24] Speaker 5: If I say it's good, it's good. But I don't

[34:50] Speaker 2: Oh? I don't know.
[34:52] Speaker 5: Pers the land isn't any good. Oh, perhaps I don't
[34:55] Speaker 5: like the idea of risking Peeky's money. Or perhaps it's
[34:58] Speaker 5: a stiff job and I'm too lazy.
[35:06] Speaker 8: I don't know what it is, but every time I
[35:08] Speaker 8: play on the grams, I can only make three letter words.

[36:47] Speaker 2: That.
[36:49] Speaker 6: He's come back.
[36:52] Speaker 2: Johnny eating better?
[36:55] Speaker 5: That's the matter. You're white as a sheet, well.

[37:10] Speaker 5: Well, what's all this? I won't have been away a
[37:12] Speaker 5: few hours?
[37:13] Speaker 11: It seems like a town to me.
[37:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, it seems like that to me too.
[37:16] Speaker 5: No, shut up, it was nothing nothing. I came by
[37:19] Speaker 5: and to.
[37:19] Speaker 2: Lose my life. You call it nothing?
[37:22] Speaker 6: You nearly lost your life, came very close to it.
[37:26] Speaker 5: Let's drop the subject.
[37:27] Speaker 14: No, go on, Vikie, I want to hear about it.
[37:31] Speaker 5: Whoa very well?
[37:32] Speaker 8: On top of the cliff, I was trying to turn.
[37:35] Speaker 2: My car near the edge.
[37:36] Speaker 6: Johnny in the car?
[37:37] Speaker 4: No, it was a few feet away.
[37:39] Speaker 2: Go on, Well, I didn't realize I was back in
[37:42] Speaker 2: the car.
[37:42] Speaker 8: Toward the dead, but I was, And if old Johnny
[37:45] Speaker 8: hadn't taken a fly and leap and grabbed the break,
[37:47] Speaker 8: I should have been Kingdom.
[37:48] Speaker 6: Come by now, Johnny saved your life. Oh Johnny, I
[37:53] Speaker 6: can ever tell.
[37:54] Speaker 7: You what this means to me?
[37:56] Speaker 2: You donnie, Yes, it means a good bit to me too.
[38:01] Speaker 2: I think the old fellow deserves reward.
[38:03] Speaker 8: How about a night out sports?
[38:04] Speaker 5: Shall bring on me, old bee? Oh well, I was
[38:06] Speaker 5: very kind of you, bikie. But don't you have to
[38:08] Speaker 5: go to Paris?
[38:09] Speaker 8: Paris fish fish of course, So I do my securities.
[38:12] Speaker 8: I've got to go over there and kench the arrangements form.
[38:15] Speaker 2: Why don't you come up with me?
[38:16] Speaker 5: Oh all right? The cat seems to forget I'm a
[38:19] Speaker 5: married man. Say, I'll tell you what I might do, Biggie.
[38:21] Speaker 5: I might drive up, drive up as far as London
[38:23] Speaker 5: with you. How about that monkey vase?
[38:24] Speaker 8: Yes, maggy vas, I mean no, Lina, you let me come.
[38:28] Speaker 7: Well.
[38:29] Speaker 5: It seems to me that, yes, I know a job. Well,
[38:32] Speaker 5: it seems to me that I'll have much more chance
[38:35] Speaker 5: of getting a job in London than I would around here.
[38:37] Speaker 2: Yes, of course he would do.
[38:38] Speaker 4: Let him.
[38:38] Speaker 2: Lina, Well, I.
[38:39] Speaker 6: Don't see very well how I can stop good?
[38:51] Speaker 11: Yes, ethel They have an.
[38:53] Speaker 6: Inspector Hudson in the hall, ma'am. He wants to see
[38:55] Speaker 6: mister Ascar showing you a nettle. Very good man. Will
[38:59] Speaker 6: you come this way?
[39:00] Speaker 4: Thank you?
[39:02] Speaker 2: Yes, by name's Hodge and Inspector Hodgeon from the County Police.
[39:06] Speaker 2: How do you do I understand your.
[39:07] Speaker 6: Husband's not in man, No, he's been up in London
[39:10] Speaker 6: for two days.
[39:10] Speaker 2: Or perhaps you might be able to help him. Yes,
[39:12] Speaker 2: of course I believe you know a mister Thwaite.
[39:15] Speaker 6: Yes, he's a close friend of my husband.
[39:17] Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how to put it quite Perhaps
[39:21] Speaker 2: it would be easier if I showed you this in
[39:23] Speaker 2: this afternoon's paper.
[39:25] Speaker 6: Right here, man englishman found dead.
[39:28] Speaker 7: An Englishman met with a mysterious death in.
[39:31] Speaker 6: A house in Paris is believed to be mister Gordon Carkan's.
[39:37] Speaker 2: I'm sorry I have to do this, man, but we're
[39:39] Speaker 2: making inquiries for the Paris police. They found some papers
[39:42] Speaker 2: on mister Thwaite's person which indicates he just formed the
[39:45] Speaker 2: corporation with your husband.
[39:47] Speaker 7: But what did the French police think caused the death?
[39:51] Speaker 2: Well, this is a copy of a telegram that we
[39:54] Speaker 2: received from Paris. Great visited the place.
[39:57] Speaker 3: In the company of another Englishman, I will Fwight ordered
[40:01] Speaker 3: a bottle of brandy.
[40:03] Speaker 2: According to one of the waiters, Twite's companion asked for
[40:06] Speaker 2: the brandy to be served in large beakers. Apparently as
[40:09] Speaker 2: a result of a bit between the two men, Sweit
[40:12] Speaker 2: filled one of these beakers to the brim and drank
[40:14] Speaker 2: it all. The other man was not present when the
[40:17] Speaker 2: actual tragedy happened. I'm sorry, man, but do you or
[40:21] Speaker 2: your husband happened to nerve any friend of mister Twaits
[40:24] Speaker 2: who might have been there with him. No, then perhaps
[40:28] Speaker 2: you could enlighten us about this corporation.
[40:30] Speaker 9: Yes, I believe I can.
[40:33] Speaker 7: My husband had planned a real estate development with him.
[40:37] Speaker 7: Mister Thwaite had gone to Paris to deserve the corporation.
[40:41] Speaker 5: Thank you, ma'am. That's all.
[40:43] Speaker 2: Good day, Good day.
[40:56] Speaker 15: Hello O God's Club, ye speakers, today's guard things.
[41:02] Speaker 6: He left the twins yesterday morning.
[41:09] Speaker 11: No, no, it doesn't matter, thank you, because.
[41:28] Speaker 3: Now for faith and identification, listen is CBS they Columbia
[41:32] Speaker 3: Broadcasting System. In a few minutes, mister de Mille and
[41:55] Speaker 3: our stars William Powell and Olivia de Haviland will return
[41:58] Speaker 3: and Act three of Now here's a very reasonable question
[42:03] Speaker 3: from an American housewife.
[42:05] Speaker 16: Now that it seems likely the war in Europe may
[42:07] Speaker 16: soon come to an end, why should I keep on
[42:10] Speaker 16: saving my used cooking fat?
[42:12] Speaker 3: Why missus America? Because the need is still critical, perhaps
[42:15] Speaker 3: more critical than ever.
[42:16] Speaker 16: But will fats be needed as urgently to manufacture war
[42:20] Speaker 16: materials and medicines to send abroad.
[42:22] Speaker 3: After Germany's defeat. There's still Japan, remember this too. The
[42:25] Speaker 3: Jets still have the fat. They hold the countries from
[42:28] Speaker 3: which we used to import about one billion pounds of
[42:31] Speaker 3: fats and oils each year.
[42:32] Speaker 6: A billion pounds.
[42:34] Speaker 11: That's a lot of fat.
[42:35] Speaker 3: It is indeed enough to help manufacture the supplies of ammunition, medicines, parachutes,
[42:40] Speaker 3: and other war materials that must keep on going to
[42:42] Speaker 3: our fighting men abroad. Remember till our domestic production of
[42:46] Speaker 3: fats is short, it has had to fall off during
[42:48] Speaker 3: the war.
[42:49] Speaker 16: Well, I guess I'd better keep that salvage tin handy
[42:51] Speaker 16: on the stove, just as I've been doing.
[42:53] Speaker 3: You're doing a necessary patriotic service when you continue to
[42:57] Speaker 3: save every drop of used kitchen fats and turn them
[42:59] Speaker 3: in to your butcher. Every bit you throw away, nay,
[43:02] Speaker 3: deprive one of our men of some vital thing he needs.
[43:05] Speaker 2: The war isn't over.
[43:07] Speaker 3: Till our boys come home. We need to keep on
[43:09] Speaker 3: doing everything we can to get them home sooner. Fats
[43:12] Speaker 3: are essential materials of war. Don't waste them. Save them
[43:16] Speaker 3: every day, turn them into your butcher. Remember he still
[43:19] Speaker 3: gives you four cents a pounds and two red ration
[43:21] Speaker 3: points for every pound you turn in. That's the message
[43:24] Speaker 3: your government sends you. Here's what mister Lee Marshall, director
[43:28] Speaker 3: of Distribution War Food Administration, tells you. Saving used fats
[43:32] Speaker 3: is not a glamorous task. It takes effort, but it
[43:35] Speaker 3: is one that only you, the American housewife, can perform
[43:39] Speaker 3: for the country. We ask you to continue the wonderful
[43:41] Speaker 3: job you are doing to help speed final victory. And now,
[43:46] Speaker 3: mister de mill returns to the microphone.
[43:48] Speaker 4: When the prayers are where we hope you will join
[43:50] Speaker 4: us behind the scenes for an informal chat for our stars.
[43:54] Speaker 4: Now here's Act three of Suspicion, starring William Powell as
[43:57] Speaker 4: Johnny and Olivia de Haviland as Lina. Lena's mind. The
[44:09] Speaker 4: sharp sting of suspicion has given way to the dull,
[44:12] Speaker 4: sickening ache of certain day. Certain day to her husband
[44:17] Speaker 4: is a murderer.
[44:18] Speaker 2: Returning to the house, he stands.
[44:20] Speaker 4: Framed in the doorway, looking at her. She turns toward
[44:24] Speaker 4: him with fear.
[44:25] Speaker 5: In her eyes. You've read about Beakie, Heather. I was
[44:29] Speaker 5: terribly fond of Bikie, were you. Yes? I love that sully,
[44:33] Speaker 5: generous and good hearted fool.
[44:35] Speaker 6: Did you?
[44:36] Speaker 5: Of course I did? Next to you. I loved him
[44:38] Speaker 5: more than anybody in the world.
[44:40] Speaker 6: Next to me.
[44:42] Speaker 5: Oh, poor monkey face here, I am thinking only of
[44:45] Speaker 5: myself for forgetting about you. You like him too, didn't you?
[44:48] Speaker 6: I like him very much. The police were here, What
[44:53] Speaker 6: do they want? They wanted you to help them. They
[44:57] Speaker 6: had a telegram from Paris, and it seems to was
[45:00] Speaker 6: an Englishman who made it.
[45:03] Speaker 5: Yes, the whole story was in the late edition. What else?
[45:07] Speaker 7: The inspector wants you to phone him? Thought perhaps you
[45:10] Speaker 7: could help identify this englishman.
[45:13] Speaker 5: What did you tell them? Did you mention the corporation?
[45:16] Speaker 6: Naturally? I told him that he was planning to dissolve it.
[45:21] Speaker 5: I wish you left all that to me. Hello, which
[45:24] Speaker 5: the police station. Please, What else did you tell them?
[45:28] Speaker 7: That's about all?
[45:29] Speaker 5: Hello, Hello, inspector, this is John Asgott. Yes, well I
[45:37] Speaker 5: drove up to London with him Jues evening. Yes, I
[45:40] Speaker 5: saw him off at Croydon Airport. No no, I stayed
[45:45] Speaker 5: in London until this afternoon at my clubana.
[45:55] Speaker 9: How nice to see to dolve this.
[45:58] Speaker 6: Here's Abel.
[45:58] Speaker 7: You know, I couldn't put my light out until three
[46:01] Speaker 7: this morning. I was so interested in your last book
[46:03] Speaker 7: I had to come over and talk.
[46:04] Speaker 6: To you about it.
[46:05] Speaker 9: That's the nicest complement I have forgot.
[46:07] Speaker 14: I was completely fascinated by the way you are.
[46:09] Speaker 6: Villain enticed his victim.
[46:10] Speaker 7: Across the footbridge, knowing that the bridge had been sown through, and.
[46:13] Speaker 9: He also knew his victim couldn't swim. Don't forget that.
[46:17] Speaker 6: Well, what I want to know is this, Would you
[46:20] Speaker 6: call that an actual murder?
[46:23] Speaker 9: From a moral standpoint, there's no question at all.
[46:26] Speaker 6: It is murden, I suppose it is.
[46:29] Speaker 9: What does Johnny think?
[46:30] Speaker 6: Johnny? Oh, I haven't discussed it for him. Why I
[46:34] Speaker 6: think he'd be interruted.
[46:35] Speaker 7: The same situation with his brand is in Paris, the
[46:38] Speaker 7: same well that Brandy business is just like my footbridge.
[46:41] Speaker 9: By the way, this branded thing isn't new at all.
[46:44] Speaker 6: You know it's been done before.
[46:45] Speaker 9: Oh yeah, and in real life too. I haven't here
[46:48] Speaker 9: a book called the Trial of Richard Palmer.
[46:51] Speaker 2: A will that book?
[46:52] Speaker 9: The Trial of Oh?
[46:55] Speaker 3: I remember what it is?
[46:56] Speaker 7: It's in your house, my house, yes, John, they borrowed
[47:00] Speaker 7: it a week ago.
[47:09] Speaker 2: Hello.
[47:10] Speaker 6: Oh, may I speak to mister raise Gard Please, he
[47:13] Speaker 6: isn't in. This is missus Asta speaking.
[47:17] Speaker 13: Well, this is the Garandar's Life Insurance Company.
[47:20] Speaker 6: Yes, would you tell mister raise Gard has been a second.
[47:25] Speaker 5: We've written him fully and he should.
[47:26] Speaker 17: Get our letter in the morning.
[47:33] Speaker 14: Dear sir, replying to your inquiry regarding a loan of
[47:38] Speaker 14: fire policy, we regret that such a loan cannot be granted.
[47:42] Speaker 14: According to the terms of the policy. Payments can only
[47:45] Speaker 14: be made in the event of your wife said, if you.
[47:53] Speaker 5: Can let this for me?
[47:55] Speaker 2: What's the mother?
[47:57] Speaker 8: Nothing?
[47:58] Speaker 5: Well, you're not sugaring, are you?
[48:00] Speaker 7: Oh?
[48:00] Speaker 6: I have a bit of a chill.
[48:01] Speaker 5: It's cold and all this sunshine all my poor little
[48:05] Speaker 5: shivering baby. How do you feel now?
[48:08] Speaker 2: Better?
[48:09] Speaker 5: Much good? What are you doing tonight?
[48:12] Speaker 6: We're going to Isabel's to die?
[48:14] Speaker 2: Oh? What a bore.
[48:24] Speaker 5: Well, let's get back to that new book of yours.
[48:25] Speaker 5: As a well, you mean to tell me that a
[48:27] Speaker 5: fund who sits down at the piano, it starts to
[48:29] Speaker 5: strum and in two seconds later he shot?
[48:32] Speaker 2: Is that the idea?
[48:32] Speaker 7: Hey, a certain note on the piano was wired or
[48:35] Speaker 7: a revolver concealed in the wall?
[48:37] Speaker 5: Oh, I don't care much for that. As a belt,
[48:39] Speaker 5: you're slipping, old girl.
[48:41] Speaker 9: What's wrong with this?
[48:42] Speaker 5: Too complicated? You're going to kill somebody to do it simply?
[48:45] Speaker 6: How would you do it simply?
[48:47] Speaker 11: Johnny?
[48:48] Speaker 5: No, I don't know there. Just use the most obvious
[48:50] Speaker 5: method for instant well poison, Just use the first one
[48:54] Speaker 5: that came to my mind, say Awesoenic Awsen.
[48:56] Speaker 9: It could be traced in the body's cool.
[48:59] Speaker 5: But it isn't always.
[49:00] Speaker 9: No, it's very minute.
[49:01] Speaker 7: There are probably hundreds of murders walking about, Johnny.
[49:05] Speaker 6: Do you suppose those murderers are happy?
[49:07] Speaker 5: I don't know. I shouldn't they?
[49:09] Speaker 2: Well, anyway, it's a belle.
[49:10] Speaker 5: It seems to me that by now somebody would have
[49:12] Speaker 5: discovered a poison that can't be traced. But what about it?
[49:16] Speaker 7: Isn't that an untraceable poison? No?
[49:19] Speaker 5: Do that thing, Isabelle? You are hiding something from it.
[49:31] Speaker 6: Johnny, you're locking up? What about Ethel?
[49:35] Speaker 5: Well, it's Ethel tonight. Off. She won't be back till morning.
[49:39] Speaker 6: What about Cook?
[49:40] Speaker 5: Have you forgotten Cook's away on a holiday. Oh, darling,
[49:45] Speaker 5: you're showing again. You suppose you're catching cold?
[49:49] Speaker 16: Yes, I think that's what it must be.
[49:51] Speaker 5: Oh well, we'll have to touch you in the bed,
[49:53] Speaker 5: get you nice and warm.
[49:55] Speaker 6: I'm on, Johnny, please please don't.
[49:57] Speaker 2: What's the trouble, Johnny.
[49:59] Speaker 6: I'm in the street tonight. I don't know why, but
[50:01] Speaker 6: I'd like to be alone. Would you mind sitting in
[50:04] Speaker 6: your dressing room? Of course, that's mind, Johnny. I I
[50:09] Speaker 6: have been sitting very well lately.
[50:11] Speaker 5: Oh, I understand you used to sleep badly when I
[50:16] Speaker 5: wasn't here.
[50:16] Speaker 2: Now you.
[50:19] Speaker 5: All right?
[50:19] Speaker 2: That's the way you feel about it? Good night?
[50:31] Speaker 5: You come on, Nina, wake up here?
[50:45] Speaker 2: You better?
[50:47] Speaker 5: Yes?
[50:47] Speaker 9: Yes, that hello, darling, it's still I came over this moment.
[50:52] Speaker 9: We were quite worried about Uli.
[50:54] Speaker 6: It's more I happen to sleep all day.
[50:58] Speaker 5: The doctor give you a kill, Army, that's all you needed. Rest.
[51:02] Speaker 5: I'll run down and tell athletic supper right back.
[51:05] Speaker 7: Oh, he's won in a millionaire Johnny of yours. I
[51:10] Speaker 7: warn you, if you leave me alone much longer with you,
[51:13] Speaker 7: my career will soon be over.
[51:15] Speaker 6: It blurted if you write as blurted.
[51:17] Speaker 9: Worse than that, he's wearing all my secrets.
[51:19] Speaker 2: Out of me.
[51:20] Speaker 6: Did you tell him anything today?
[51:23] Speaker 9: Did I old?
[51:24] Speaker 4: Now?
[51:24] Speaker 7: Honestly have you ever been able to deny Johnny anything?
[51:28] Speaker 6: It was about that poison, wasn't it as it was?
[51:31] Speaker 9: And if he writes a story on that one before
[51:33] Speaker 9: I do lead it?
[51:34] Speaker 2: Need it?
[51:35] Speaker 9: Imagine a substance in daily use.
[51:37] Speaker 7: Anyone can get it and within a minute after taking
[51:40] Speaker 7: the victims beautifully out of the way, and mind you,
[51:43] Speaker 7: it's undetectable after this.
[51:46] Speaker 6: Whatever it is painful, let him in lease.
[51:50] Speaker 9: In fact, I should think it would be a most pleasant.
[51:53] Speaker 18: Say, Nina, are you awake?
[52:07] Speaker 15: Yes?
[52:09] Speaker 5: I brought you a sandwich in a glass of milk.
[52:13] Speaker 5: You might drink the milk before you go to sleep.
[52:16] Speaker 5: I'll just leave it here night dog. Why don't you
[52:26] Speaker 5: let me help you back?
[52:27] Speaker 6: Oh, there's no need do I.
[52:29] Speaker 5: What's the matter with you this morning? You're still annoyed
[52:32] Speaker 5: with me, aren't you?
[52:32] Speaker 1: No?
[52:33] Speaker 6: Johnny, Really, I still don't for you will, that's all?
[52:36] Speaker 5: And a few days that your mother's will do more
[52:38] Speaker 5: good than staying at home.
[52:39] Speaker 6: Well, it's not exactly that, don't you understand?
[52:41] Speaker 7: Mother?
[52:42] Speaker 5: Telephone that phorn off it early.
[52:44] Speaker 6: It seems to me, Well, mother gets up early.
[52:47] Speaker 7: I happened to mention that I was a bit nervy,
[52:49] Speaker 7: and before I knew it, I'd agreed to spend a
[52:51] Speaker 7: few days with her.
[52:53] Speaker 5: All right, I'll run down and get the car ready.
[52:55] Speaker 6: Oh no, don't, I'll drive it myself.
[52:59] Speaker 5: I prefer to.
[53:00] Speaker 6: Oh you're going to fast, Johnny.
[53:10] Speaker 5: Well you want to get there, don't you?
[53:13] Speaker 6: Did you?
[53:14] Speaker 7: Did you have to go by this road?
[53:15] Speaker 2: Why not?
[53:16] Speaker 5: The short way, isn't it? There's the hotel site. Another
[53:22] Speaker 5: thing I've failed that.
[53:25] Speaker 1: He's going to kill me.
[53:27] Speaker 10: Your door is open.
[53:28] Speaker 12: He's going to kill me.
[53:30] Speaker 6: The curve the door was swing.
[53:33] Speaker 7: He's going to push me out down.
[53:35] Speaker 15: I'm down, over and over, Madam, down and down, over
[53:41] Speaker 15: and over.
[53:45] Speaker 5: Hand at all?
[53:46] Speaker 2: You know? Let me go, Let me go, young, let
[53:50] Speaker 2: me go.
[53:51] Speaker 5: What's gone?
[53:52] Speaker 2: Leave me? Leave fool?
[53:54] Speaker 5: Poppa enough? How much do you think a man can
[53:58] Speaker 5: Beare you turned me out of your room, you go
[54:02] Speaker 5: running away to your mother's. Now you shrink away from me,
[54:04] Speaker 5: so you hated me, my wife. You almost killed the
[54:08] Speaker 5: booth back to her because you had to pull away
[54:10] Speaker 5: from me, even when I was reaching over to save
[54:12] Speaker 5: from pulling out of the car. Well, you don't have
[54:16] Speaker 5: to put up with me anymore, doney.
[54:19] Speaker 4: Wait, where are you going?
[54:21] Speaker 5: First time? Taking on to your mother's and then don't worry.
[54:25] Speaker 5: I won't follow you again.
[54:27] Speaker 6: Johnny, you mean you're going to Johnny? Why were you
[54:31] Speaker 6: asking us a bill about that point? What were you
[54:33] Speaker 6: planning to do with Johnny? You were going to kill yourself?
[54:40] Speaker 5: Oh my god, yes, but I changed my mind. I'm
[54:45] Speaker 5: going back to see it through present time.
[54:47] Speaker 6: And you mean mail back that money you took.
[54:51] Speaker 5: I can't pay it back. I made the last attempt
[54:53] Speaker 5: to raise the money when I went away.
[54:54] Speaker 6: With Beki Paris.
[54:56] Speaker 5: I went to Liverpool. I tried to follow your insurance.
[55:00] Speaker 5: It didn't work.
[55:01] Speaker 6: You were in Liverpool and by then you didn't go
[55:05] Speaker 6: to Paris.
[55:06] Speaker 5: Of course, you think I'd let some idiot for big
[55:09] Speaker 5: that brandy of my head.
[55:11] Speaker 6: Oh Johnny, if ony i'd known. This is as much
[55:15] Speaker 6: my fault as yours.
[55:17] Speaker 17: I was only thinking of myself, not what you were
[55:20] Speaker 17: going through. If I'd really been close to you, you
[55:23] Speaker 17: could have confided in me that you were ashamed to do.
[55:27] Speaker 17: Oh if I don't understood it, Oh, Johnny, it'll be different.
[55:30] Speaker 6: Now, we'll make it difference.
[55:31] Speaker 5: People don't change over nightly. I'm no good.
[55:34] Speaker 6: Let's turn back, Johnny. Let's go home and see it
[55:37] Speaker 6: all through together.
[55:38] Speaker 5: It won't work.
[55:39] Speaker 6: It will work, I know it will, Johnny.
[55:41] Speaker 7: Please, you can't shut me out.
[55:44] Speaker 15: Turn the car around and let's go home.
[55:47] Speaker 6: Please, Johnny.
[55:50] Speaker 9: I'll get in the car, Johnny.
[55:57] Speaker 6: Where are we going?
[56:00] Speaker 5: We're running back and we're going home.
[56:18] Speaker 4: It's more than a matter of suspicion. And that's a
[56:21] Speaker 4: nice performance. Will be long remembered by millions of listeners
[56:24] Speaker 4: to the Lux Radio Theater. And for that we can
[56:26] Speaker 4: thank our stars, William Powell and Olivia to have of them.
[56:30] Speaker 5: Thank you so sol, You gave us a great play
[56:33] Speaker 5: when you picked the Suspicion.
[56:34] Speaker 4: Now you want to be an authority on mysteries, Bell,
[56:37] Speaker 4: One of the best pits of news I've heard is
[56:39] Speaker 4: that you're going to do another picture in the Finman.
[56:42] Speaker 6: Series, but still for the thin Man haven't you been
[56:46] Speaker 6: putting on a little weight?
[56:52] Speaker 5: Livia? How can you say that? But I'm scared of
[56:56] Speaker 5: my own shadow.
[56:58] Speaker 4: You mean it looks as if a crowd were following.
[57:05] Speaker 5: What week I have come from my iron constitution. Every
[57:09] Speaker 5: morning when I get up, I turn on those exercises
[57:11] Speaker 5: of the radio and do them. No, my wife does
[57:16] Speaker 5: I watch it.
[57:17] Speaker 4: Well, I don't understand you. When I was your age,
[57:20] Speaker 4: I used to think nothing of a ten mile walk.
[57:21] Speaker 5: I don't think much of it myself. But look, if
[57:26] Speaker 5: you want to know, I'm on an a diet.
[57:28] Speaker 9: An a diet.
[57:29] Speaker 4: What's that?
[57:30] Speaker 5: A steak, a baked potato, a piece of pie?
[57:33] Speaker 6: Sounds like omni rations?
[57:35] Speaker 4: Well it goes to the front.
[57:42] Speaker 5: Well, in spite of all you say about me, I'll
[57:46] Speaker 5: confess you're looking.
[57:47] Speaker 2: As lovely as ever Libby, Yes, isn't she?
[57:50] Speaker 5: And now that I've planted before your settle, you wouldn't
[57:54] Speaker 5: like to tell us one of the reasons, would you?
[57:56] Speaker 2: Nay?
[57:57] Speaker 6: No?
[57:58] Speaker 7: No?
[57:58] Speaker 2: Oh?
[57:59] Speaker 4: Come on, plenty of fresh air, sunshine and.
[58:05] Speaker 5: LUs toilet soap. I'll say it for you, but.
[58:08] Speaker 6: There's no need to be modest about a CD. I
[58:11] Speaker 6: use let's toilet so faithfully and it does wonder well.
[58:15] Speaker 4: Thank you, Olivia, and I think we'd better take back
[58:18] Speaker 4: all we said about Bill's figure, or you dial us
[58:21] Speaker 4: off his radio next Monday night.
[58:23] Speaker 6: Not when he hears what's coming up? CV?
[58:25] Speaker 5: What do you have the next Monday settle play?
[58:27] Speaker 4: I think you'll like well the RKO romantic comedy Lucky Partners,
[58:33] Speaker 4: and our stars will be Dna Mitchi and Lucille Ball
[58:38] Speaker 4: with Jack Corson. It's the story of two young people
[58:41] Speaker 4: falling in love who take their future on a horse race.
[58:46] Speaker 4: When you gamble both love and horses, you're riding for
[58:50] Speaker 4: plenty of excitement, but.
[58:51] Speaker 6: It sounds like another entertainment. CD will be listening.
[58:55] Speaker 11: Good Night, good night, good night.

[1:00:44] Speaker 3: their big cast in their grand half hour show. Their

[1:01:03] Speaker 3: this Friday. This is jo and I'm Sir John M.
[1:01:05] Speaker 3: Kennedy reminding you to tune in again next Monday night
[1:01:07] Speaker 3: to here Lucky Partners with Dona, Michi the Seal Ball
[1:01:11] Speaker 3: and Jack Carson.
[1:01:17] Speaker 2: Fry sp Ry.
[1:01:21] Speaker 6: Cook with.
[1:01:24] Speaker 3: Song, cakes, pies, fried foods. Everything tastes better made with
[1:01:29] Speaker 3: you easy mix.
[1:01:30] Speaker 5: Fry short things.
[1:01:31] Speaker 3: So for light fluffy cakes, tender flaky pastry, Chris didjustable
[1:01:36] Speaker 3: fried foods.
[1:01:41] Speaker 5: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. As a film, Suspicion was originally released in
[1:01:51] Speaker 1: nineteen forty one and it starred Joan Fontaine, Pavelin's sister,
[1:01:57] Speaker 1: and Carrie Grant, and Fontaine actually won the Best Actress
[1:02:04] Speaker 1: oscar as well as being recognized for her acting in
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: the film by the National Board Review and the New
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: York Film Critics Circle Award the one thing about Lucks
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: and a lot of episodes, because there are some episodes
[1:02:22] Speaker 1: of Lux Radio Theater where you get a substitute of
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: leads and it just comes down to the fact that
[1:02:29] Speaker 1: at that point the original leads they couldn't afford. You know,
[1:02:34] Speaker 1: that's the case when you get saying to the nineteen fifties.
[1:02:39] Speaker 1: But oftentimes you get to explore the idea of alternate casting,
[1:02:46] Speaker 1: where we go ahead and we say, well, what if
[1:02:48] Speaker 1: we replace these two famous Hollywood leads with two other
[1:02:55] Speaker 1: famous Hollywood leads? How would the movie be different?
[1:03:00] Speaker 2: And it's fun to explore that.
[1:03:02] Speaker 1: And I honestly think that Haviland does a great job
[1:03:06] Speaker 1: here and really gets us invested in her emotions as
[1:03:12] Speaker 1: well as understanding and believing in her feeling of being threatened.
[1:03:17] Speaker 1: William Powell is good, although I don't think he makes
[1:03:21] Speaker 1: much of an attempt to make us believe that he
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: is British. There's no type of accent that's attempted at all,
[1:03:31] Speaker 1: and you get a really American accent. But that wasn't
[1:03:36] Speaker 1: totally unheard of for the era. It is something that
[1:03:43] Speaker 1: I kind of guessed at and checked, but in the film,
[1:03:47] Speaker 1: Beackie was actually played by Nigel Bruce, and that does
[1:03:54] Speaker 1: explain part of the performance that we get in this
[1:03:58] Speaker 1: as we're trying to say just I am giving you
[1:04:03] Speaker 1: my best Nogel Bruce interpersonation here, and it's a decent
[1:04:08] Speaker 1: enough taking that regard. I find the story really interesting.
[1:04:14] Speaker 1: It was a Hitchcock film, and so you kind of
[1:04:18] Speaker 1: expect things to turn out to be as dark and
[1:04:22] Speaker 1: sinister as she expects, if not more so. So it's
[1:04:27] Speaker 1: a surprise when it turns out the things that she
[1:04:30] Speaker 1: thought were sinister or weren't quite what she thought they were.
[1:04:35] Speaker 1: And I think it's an interesting journey for her as
[1:04:39] Speaker 1: a character. I don't think that she is irrational really
[1:04:46] Speaker 1: in her fears. I think her fears make sense. But
[1:04:49] Speaker 1: the reason they make sense is that she married Johnny
[1:04:55] Speaker 1: without really knowing who he was other than she. He
[1:05:00] Speaker 1: was aware that he married her for her money and
[1:05:05] Speaker 1: began to become aware that he had lied to her
[1:05:09] Speaker 1: about things, or he was not quite what he seemed
[1:05:14] Speaker 1: to be. But people do change, and I think that's
[1:05:19] Speaker 1: really hard to process or believe if you're dealing in
[1:05:27] Speaker 1: a relationship where because of choices you've both made, you've
[1:05:33] Speaker 1: ended up not trusting this person at all. So I
[1:05:36] Speaker 1: think it plays out as a really interesting and different dynamic,
[1:05:40] Speaker 1: particularly if you come into it thinking, well, I kind
[1:05:44] Speaker 1: of know what this is going to be, like it's
[1:05:45] Speaker 1: a Hitchcock story and it just turns another direction, then
[1:05:51] Speaker 1: you would typically expect all right, Well, I hope you've
[1:05:55] Speaker 1: enjoyed this episode. We've got another full week of Olivia
[1:06:00] Speaker 1: de Havilan, so join us back here on Monday for
[1:06:05] Speaker 1: the fourth episode in their series. In the meantime, send
[1:06:08] Speaker 1: your comments to Bocks thirteen at Great Detectives dot net
[1:06:12] Speaker 1: from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Graham signing off.
