[8:05] Speaker 7: He's a pervarication.
[8:08] Speaker 2: What is Loganberry Point?
[8:10] Speaker 7: Near near nothing? The nearest place is type? Well, that
[8:15] Speaker 7: ain't near nothing either.
[8:18] Speaker 2: Very unusual. Well, I'll leave my plane immediately get the
[8:22] Speaker 2: Loganberry Point somehow. That was very nice? Are your captain
[8:39] Speaker 2: Stinson to drive me over the Loganberry Point? The plane
[8:42] Speaker 2: couldn't seem to find a nearer landing place. No, you
[8:48] Speaker 2: don't suppose to your captain that the horse might trot
[8:50] Speaker 2: a little.
[8:52] Speaker 9: I'm not much worried about it. I mean, could you
[8:57] Speaker 9: make her trot? Nope?
[9:00] Speaker 5: I put her out the pasture when she's twenty two.
[9:03] Speaker 5: She's been out for eight years now. I had to
[9:06] Speaker 5: call her back into Harmis when the gas rashing went in.
[9:10] Speaker 5: She has no trouble to stand up, say, knocking the trothy.
[9:15] Speaker 2: I see, do you happen to know Eliza God over
[9:21] Speaker 2: at loggingbury Point, Captain Sinston, yep, is she quite a
[9:27] Speaker 2: responsible person short of the earth.
[9:31] Speaker 9: I just thought I had visit her.
[9:35] Speaker 13: You mean room there?
[9:37] Speaker 9: Yeah, we don't know, Eliza. What do you mean you
[9:42] Speaker 9: don't find out when you get bare.
[9:53] Speaker 7: All riding?
[9:54] Speaker 3: Mister Hyde, thank you, mister God.
[9:59] Speaker 9: I took a plain as far as Sistan. Men had
[10:01] Speaker 9: to drive over.
[10:03] Speaker 7: Where's this man you captured in the woodshed? Woodshed, that's
[10:07] Speaker 7: where he is.
[10:09] Speaker 10: No man but my past husband ever spent a night
[10:11] Speaker 10: under this roof, And there ain't no man ever going to.
[10:21] Speaker 10: Don't you want to put down your suit case?
[10:23] Speaker 3: No?
[10:24] Speaker 9: No, thank you. I have some equipment in it.
[10:26] Speaker 10: Oh now you'll have to go the rest of the
[10:32] Speaker 10: way yourself right in there, staid out on a cord
[10:35] Speaker 10: of wood. I ain't going into no wood shed with
[10:39] Speaker 10: no two men?
[10:42] Speaker 2: All right, missus jott, I'll go look thought of the
[10:52] Speaker 2: worse for wear.
[10:54] Speaker 9: Come on, hey, come on, come on, sit up?
[11:01] Speaker 4: Yeah, sit up? Oh it's you.
[11:05] Speaker 6: Are you the man she'd been waiting for? Yes, and
[11:07] Speaker 6: get me out of here. If I had to pretend
[11:09] Speaker 6: I was unconscious or she'd have killed me.
[11:11] Speaker 9: What do you mean after she drag me out here.
[11:14] Speaker 8: She'd come out every hour, and if I was conscious,
[11:17] Speaker 8: she'd hit me over the head with that piece of
[11:19] Speaker 8: stove wood.
[11:20] Speaker 4: Knock me out. Look at my head.
[11:24] Speaker 2: I can't tell how much of you is your head
[11:25] Speaker 2: and how much is bumped on top of your head.
[11:28] Speaker 6: She'd hit me over the head, just as cool and
[11:31] Speaker 6: systematic as though she were a pile driver.
[11:33] Speaker 9: That may have your fingers.
[11:34] Speaker 2: I want to take your princes, No, you better, I
[11:38] Speaker 2: might call missus got back. I'll telephone your prince to Washington.
[11:46] Speaker 2: We'll see who you really are.
[11:59] Speaker 15: Compos by head is Washington, according to Hardy the finger
[12:03] Speaker 15: prints you just telephoned him, Our prince of doctor Slesson.
[12:07] Speaker 15: We left San Francisco for Portugal eighteen months ago. He
[12:12] Speaker 15: was employed in the Stillwell Plans whither we're experimenting on
[12:15] Speaker 15: cargo carrying air transports. It looks like doctor Slasson is
[12:20] Speaker 15: the one we have been expecting the Gestapo to try
[12:22] Speaker 15: and smuggle into the country.
[12:24] Speaker 9: Come in. I'm glad.
[12:26] Speaker 2: I know it's Lesson that we've got quite obvious. Lesson
[12:29] Speaker 2: has been sent in secure all possible information on the
[12:31] Speaker 2: newly contemplated cargo carrying transport. This is a job that
[12:35] Speaker 2: Gestapo probably allowed him about a week to complete, and
[12:39] Speaker 2: then they must have made arrangements to get him out.
[12:41] Speaker 2: I'll check with you later than night. Well, Berkman or Slashon,
[12:47] Speaker 2: you just heard that conversation. We know who you are.
[12:50] Speaker 9: Man. Why are you're here?
[12:51] Speaker 8: Yes, there isn't any sense to my denying. After all,
[12:56] Speaker 8: the plans had to bump into that woman. You're going
[12:59] Speaker 8: to talk no, I see.
[13:04] Speaker 2: Well, the people of Logan Marry Point would say, there's
[13:07] Speaker 2: more than one way to skin a cat.
[13:11] Speaker 5: Uh uh, Martha, Martha, church bells ringing, jumping jump, put
[13:20] Speaker 5: it on your half, Martha.
[13:21] Speaker 7: The one with yellow rebbends the church bells ringing, and
[13:29] Speaker 7: it ain't go to meeting nights. They must be calling
[13:32] Speaker 7: it for something spatial.
[14:05] Speaker 13: You have been called to the church here at the.
[14:08] Speaker 5: Request of mister Harding concerning an important matter. I'm proud
[14:14] Speaker 5: to see every person of Loganberry Point present.
[14:19] Speaker 13: Mister Harding of Washington.
[14:23] Speaker 2: Citizens of loganbury Point. I know you're all aware of
[14:28] Speaker 2: the circumstances of the German spy who landed and was
[14:31] Speaker 2: apprehended here. Our government knows why he was sent here.
[14:38] Speaker 2: His mission would ordinarily take him a week. Its logical
[14:42] Speaker 2: to expect he would be returned to Germany by the
[14:44] Speaker 2: same route he arrived.
[14:47] Speaker 14: On.
[14:47] Speaker 2: This part of the coat was selected because it's very
[14:50] Speaker 2: sparsely populated, because top Well evidently believed landing here would
[14:54] Speaker 2: be very simple by all logic. I expect arrangements have
[14:59] Speaker 2: been made, but submarine to pick him up at this
[15:02] Speaker 2: very place within the week. All of you men present
[15:09] Speaker 2: are lobster fishermen. Are go out hand lighting and setting shotlines.
[15:13] Speaker 2: You know, the reefs and shoals like your own backyard.
[15:16] Speaker 2: You can weave in and out of them on the
[15:17] Speaker 2: blackest nights, in the thickest fog. I'm calling for volunteers.
[15:25] Speaker 2: Every night. I want six fishermen with end at their motors.
[15:28] Speaker 2: They've gone back on them and remain out there, and
[15:30] Speaker 2: they're launches.
[15:36] Speaker 9: Now.
[15:36] Speaker 2: It's a dangerous undertaking. There's a chance you might be
[15:40] Speaker 2: captured and even tortured for information. How many of you
[15:47] Speaker 2: men are willing to volunteer? This is a sight I
[15:59] Speaker 2: wish every American can see. Some of you are over eighty,
[16:04] Speaker 2: some in your teens. Not a man in this church

[22:57] Speaker 7: We all want to go.
[22:58] Speaker 2: The reason we're taking things in our own hands is
[23:00] Speaker 2: because it's so foggy. The planes can't.
[23:02] Speaker 3: Spot this up.
[23:03] Speaker 2: It's too foggy for the destroyer to come in among
[23:05] Speaker 2: these reefs until daybreak. Indications are that something's happened to
[23:09] Speaker 2: that submarine.
[23:10] Speaker 3: It can't emerge.
[23:12] Speaker 2: Would you say, Captain Lawson's there was a very heavy
[23:14] Speaker 2: swell out there near Horseshoe Ledge.
[23:15] Speaker 4: Plenty heavy after a three day in our eastern They've
[23:18] Speaker 4: got a roll out there standing him on their heads.
[23:20] Speaker 2: Well, that means the fire from the submarine will be
[23:22] Speaker 2: very inaccurate. How when we sight her, you're all the
[23:25] Speaker 2: fan out and make a.
[23:26] Speaker 3: Circle around her.
[23:28] Speaker 2: When you hear Captain Lawson bloy fog horn twice, head
[23:31] Speaker 2: right for her, start shooting and picking off the man
[23:33] Speaker 2: manning the guns. With thirty launches coming at her in
[23:36] Speaker 2: all directions, and the fog and the heavy roll of
[23:39] Speaker 2: the sea, she'll have her hands full.
[23:41] Speaker 3: We'll all border at the same time from all sides
[23:44] Speaker 3: of her. That's all Sney got. Alright, man your launches,
[23:49] Speaker 3: good luck.
[23:50] Speaker 7: And remember your women ful. We'll be standing right here
[23:54] Speaker 7: and they'll sweep.
[24:09] Speaker 9: That's where Captain Lawson a dark chape about two points
[24:11] Speaker 9: of starborn.
[24:12] Speaker 4: I am scum. Should I blow the fogarn twice?
[24:15] Speaker 2: No twice as the attacker blow at once? The pan
[24:17] Speaker 2: out and approach you from all sides. I'll slow the
[24:21] Speaker 2: motor give the other time to get around here.
[24:25] Speaker 4: I didn't realize how patriotic I'd be until I started
[24:27] Speaker 4: thinking of them berman setting.
[24:28] Speaker 2: Foot on our Sure, I've never seen a thicker fogs spotters.
[24:38] Speaker 9: Should I head for her now, she's only shooting at
[24:39] Speaker 9: the sound of our motor. We won't reply.
[24:44] Speaker 2: Let him stew Why you get ready, Captainlwson, to blow
[24:48] Speaker 2: your fog un two blasts?
[24:51] Speaker 4: I hain't had so much funds lightest camp on the well.
[24:58] Speaker 9: All right, how the signal.
[25:05] Speaker 4: Think are Well wait, mister hurting, let me do a
[25:07] Speaker 4: little gunning.
[25:09] Speaker 2: Go ahead for the minute we touch your jump aboard
[25:12] Speaker 2: hand Aline and Loganberry Point will lay.
[25:19] Speaker 19: The whole German cruise on deck. Get that screw for
[25:27] Speaker 19: the as gun there falling like tufriend honey, just for her.
[25:32] Speaker 3: Let your own boats got us to come alongside.
[25:38] Speaker 4: Dy.
[25:39] Speaker 17: I want to got it?
[25:40] Speaker 3: What your jump?
[25:55] Speaker 2: You understand commander as we stand here in the control
[25:58] Speaker 2: room your submarine that you and all your crew are
[26:00] Speaker 2: prisoners of the United States.
[26:02] Speaker 9: Chop. That's is who I've got, Shawn, I am helpless
[26:09] Speaker 9: there at your feet.
[26:10] Speaker 2: And old sea captain with twelve bullet holes evidently kicked
[26:14] Speaker 2: in the face after he was dead.
[26:15] Speaker 9: You were shopping at our controls with the fire as.
[26:18] Speaker 9: We had to shoot him, shoot him six times before
[26:21] Speaker 9: he fall from the Stinson was a neighbor of mine.
[26:25] Speaker 9: What arm of the American forces? Have you been captured
[26:27] Speaker 9: by the fisherman of Loganberry Point.
[26:30] Speaker 8: It's a hoey United States destroyer croaking out of.
[26:34] Speaker 4: The boxers are and sam hail?
[26:36] Speaker 19: Did the destroyer get in among these shows, and a
[26:38] Speaker 19: night like this that's real navigating for you.
[26:43] Speaker 9: What am I supposed to do?
[26:45] Speaker 17: Now?
[26:46] Speaker 2: You're expected to surrender your submarine and your crew and
[26:49] Speaker 2: yourself to the greatest navy in all the world.
[27:01] Speaker 5: And so we his neighbors, sloganburry Point returned the earthly
[27:24] Speaker 5: remain of one who has lived among us for so
[27:27] Speaker 5: many years, Captain Stint. If he had had a thousand life,
[27:33] Speaker 5: he would have chosen no other way to have given
[27:36] Speaker 5: them all. And so we of loganberry Point, not mournful,
[27:41] Speaker 5: but with pride in our hearts, say goodbye to a
[27:46] Speaker 5: great American who lived as an American and died his life.
[27:52] Speaker 5: God bless America, the land of the Free.
[28:14] Speaker 2: House The Spies featuring David Hardy pretended at the same
[28:18] Speaker 2: time every Monday evening.
[28:38] Speaker 3: We suggest that you tell your.
[28:40] Speaker 4: Friends that you make weekly dates ALP Radio.
[28:43] Speaker 2: This time as America Dates come, Spy works protectives from
[28:47] Speaker 2: the Spies all in.
[28:48] Speaker 3: Him House The Spy is a Philip Dates Lawn production
[28:53] Speaker 3: which has originated in New York.
[29:06] Speaker 10: This is a Blue Network.
[29:21] Speaker 9: Is the station w j Z, New York, which means
[29:24] Speaker 9: you fun and excitement as you listen to the sing
[29:26] Speaker 9: Podol program.
[29:27] Speaker 3: At seventy seven on your dial every Tuesday night at
[29:29] Speaker 3: eight thirty.
[30:24] Speaker 17: Welcome Back. I really did laugh out loud at that line.
[30:31] Speaker 17: I caught me a spy.
[30:33] Speaker 1: Beyond that, this is an interesting episode on a number
[30:37] Speaker 1: of levels. First of all, this has a plot that
[30:42] Speaker 1: I think it does make a case for this being
[30:47] Speaker 1: something plausible that the Germans would try, like some of
[30:53] Speaker 1: the other wartime plots, the idea of bending in a
[30:57] Speaker 1: spy to get the lay of land, or I guess
[31:01] Speaker 1: more appropriate the sea and the operations of.
[31:08] Speaker 17: Boats.
[31:10] Speaker 1: Mike Sanz, given the German campaign of sabotage, also illustrated
[31:17] Speaker 1: why they in real life didn't actually go through with
[31:21] Speaker 1: a plot like this. The American coastline, particularly in somewhere
[31:27] Speaker 1: like rural Maine, had a lot.
[31:29] Speaker 17: Of details that they weren't privy to. Now. When we
[31:34] Speaker 17: played Cloak.
[31:35] Speaker 1: And Dagger, we heard so many characters who had relatives
[31:41] Speaker 1: in Europe had been there once or twice, and that
[31:44] Speaker 1: could in some way lay into the assignment. It's a
[31:48] Speaker 1: case of the sort of immigration that happened in the
[31:52] Speaker 1: US being a strength when it came to fighting this war.
[31:57] Speaker 1: Having people who were not that far removed from these countries,
[32:03] Speaker 1: Germans did not have as much of that. True, they
[32:06] Speaker 1: did have people who were here, but mostly people who'd
[32:10] Speaker 1: been there before the war. This wasn't somewhere where there
[32:15] Speaker 1: was a lot of operation, like in New York City.
[32:21] Speaker 1: So the risk of being caught or missing something because
[32:26] Speaker 1: you didn't have enough local knowledge probably factored in the
[32:30] Speaker 1: Germans not taking that sort of risk when it came
[32:35] Speaker 1: to their operations, which were quite successful at this time. Now,
[32:41] Speaker 1: what the residents did in Loganberry Point was it something
[32:48] Speaker 1: that probably would have happened in real life in nineteen
[32:51] Speaker 1: forty two. It was clearly inspired by real life events. Certainly,
[32:57] Speaker 1: these stories of British civilians who became involved in the
[33:02] Speaker 1: war effort and made their own personal strikes against the
[33:07] Speaker 1: Nazis had made their way across the Atlantic as the
[33:13] Speaker 1: determination and courage of the British people served as a
[33:18] Speaker 1: rallying cry, and certainly the writers would probably have had
[33:22] Speaker 1: things such as the civilians who brought in all sorts
[33:29] Speaker 1: of crafts in order to rescue the British troops at Dunkirk. Now,
[33:35] Speaker 1: obviously the situation was not that dire, and in real
[33:39] Speaker 1: life the circumstance.
[33:42] Speaker 17: Would have had them waiting on the navy.
[33:45] Speaker 1: There's a certain cathartic fantasy that's a work in this episode.
[33:50] Speaker 1: This isn't just sort of like clownishly unrealistic. There is
[33:55] Speaker 1: a real point to this story. If you were along
[33:59] Speaker 1: the Atlantic in nineteen forty two, the German U boats
[34:04] Speaker 1: were a terror to shipping, to the merchant seamen, and
[34:10] Speaker 1: so many civilian ships were sunk by Nazi subs. They
[34:16] Speaker 1: really terrorized those Atlantic shipping lanes. There was a series
[34:22] Speaker 1: we did back on a World War II series to
[34:25] Speaker 1: war called battle Stations, which did a really good job
[34:29] Speaker 1: of talking about that. If you were listening to this
[34:34] Speaker 1: in New England in nineteen forty two, there was this
[34:39] Speaker 1: sense of average Americans taking on this hated monster who
[34:45] Speaker 1: had taken the lives of so many people who had
[34:49] Speaker 1: set sail just to do the work of merchant seamen.
[34:53] Speaker 1: I kind of wondered about her suggestion that, you know,
[34:58] Speaker 1: German or Japanese. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not the
[35:02] Speaker 1: Japanese in the Atlantic Ocean. But one other thing that
[35:05] Speaker 1: I kept found kind of interesting and seemed really plausible
[35:10] Speaker 1: was when a horse was brought out of retirement, which
[35:16] Speaker 1: seems like an interesting idea, particularly with the strict gas
[35:22] Speaker 1: rationty and I could see going back to using a
[35:27] Speaker 1: horse if you just stopped and you know, eight years previously.
[35:33] Speaker 1: I think I read it as the captain being extra
[35:39] Speaker 1: patriotic and going above and beyond, rather than something that
[35:44] Speaker 1: strictly of necessity, because unless you were driving around a
[35:49] Speaker 1: whole lot, and there's no indication that he'd need to,
[35:53] Speaker 1: you could have just kept the car and been using
[35:57] Speaker 1: that just to use your ration book. Now we turn
[36:00] Speaker 1: to listener comments and feedback, and we have some comments.
[36:05] Speaker 1: One La Fame doctor who done it writes on Spotify
[36:11] Speaker 1: woman of unusual beauty, dark's hair and skin. Her hair
[36:16] Speaker 1: is faking her skin, Tony's makeup, and she suggests going
[36:19] Speaker 1: into the water. She must be next level because I
[36:23] Speaker 1: would not have thought of that. And then as wall
[36:26] Speaker 1: As sixty nine writes, I didn't think I would like
[36:29] Speaker 1: this show, but I did. Thanks well, and thank you
[36:32] Speaker 1: for giving it a chance. And then we go over
[36:35] Speaker 1: to YouTube, where Ryn Sir writes, actually on a comment
[36:39] Speaker 1: on a johny Dollar episode, I'm skipping ahead here a
[36:42] Speaker 1: little Adam in your preview at the end of the
[36:45] Speaker 1: show today, you mentioned you were starting Counterspy. Do you
[36:48] Speaker 1: realize that counter spy is the origin of one of
[36:51] Speaker 1: the funniest lines ever in old time radio and spoilers.
[36:56] Speaker 17: He is not referring to I caught me a spy.
[37:01] Speaker 1: Our yours are working for a super secret, clandestine organization
[37:06] Speaker 1: battling the evils of communism wherever it manifests itself around
[37:11] Speaker 1: the world. Stealth and anonymity or paramount weapons for these guys.
[37:17] Speaker 1: Then they hop into a city taxi and say take
[37:20] Speaker 1: me to counterspy headquarters.
[37:22] Speaker 17: And the driver knows where it is.
[37:25] Speaker 1: Well, your description reminds me of Get Smart episode the
[37:32] Speaker 1: first season where they had this school in a residential
[37:38] Speaker 1: neighborhood and they finished solving the threat and Max was
[37:44] Speaker 1: talking about the importance of keeping their secrets and somebody asked, Hey,
[37:51] Speaker 1: is this the launder And he said, no, no, no, no, that's.
[37:55] Speaker 17: That's the spy School.
[37:57] Speaker 1: In all seriousness, though, I think this episode does establish
[38:02] Speaker 1: kind of from the get go that people are aware
[38:05] Speaker 1: of counter spy. Now, if you're going to tell me
[38:08] Speaker 1: that this little village in the middle of nowhere knows
[38:16] Speaker 1: about counter spy and knows that they can reach counter
[38:21] Speaker 1: Spy by calling the operator in Washington. I'm going to
[38:25] Speaker 1: have a hard time not believing that everyone in the
[38:29] Speaker 1: country also knows about counter Spy and that it's headquartered
[38:33] Speaker 1: in Washington. Now, it will be interesting to see if
[38:37] Speaker 1: they try to make it a bit more secret and
[38:40] Speaker 1: kind of brush away.
[38:42] Speaker 17: Some of these things, which makes it a little better.
[38:46] Speaker 1: No, I will say too, that having some sort of
[38:52] Speaker 1: public presence doesn't necessarily mean an organization can't keep secrets
[38:59] Speaker 1: and do all of the typical intelligence things.
[39:03] Speaker 17: You think about the CIA.
[39:06] Speaker 1: You can find their building that's in Langlee, Virginia just
[39:12] Speaker 1: by doing a Google search.
[39:14] Speaker 17: Find out what it looks like and where it is.
[39:17] Speaker 1: And certainly the CIIA employs many spies who are able
[39:23] Speaker 1: to go overseas and work in a clandestine fashion despite
[39:29] Speaker 1: their organization being well known to the public, although I
[39:33] Speaker 1: don't know how many CIA agents come to the building
[39:39] Speaker 1: in Taxis, which would be one thing that.
[39:42] Speaker 17: Would definitely give their cover away.
[39:45] Speaker 1: Thanks for the comment. Now it's time to thank our
