[1:27] Speaker 1: the Laur's Nielsen Murder Case.
[1:32] Speaker 2: Broadways My Beat sometimes Square to Columbus Circle, the gaudiest,
[1:48] Speaker 2: the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world.
[1:55] Speaker 3: Broadways My Beat with Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover.
[2:11] Speaker 2: It happens faster on Broadway Now, The Coming of the
[2:14] Speaker 2: Night and the time Clock people go home to dinner.
[2:16] Speaker 2: In shadows and far away from a time still yet
[2:19] Speaker 2: to come. A wind drifts softly. It touches a cheek
[2:23] Speaker 2: and quickens a step, finds the doorway and waits there,
[2:26] Speaker 2: and its voice is a sigh of regret. The sounds
[2:29] Speaker 2: of the river seem closer. The neon blinks coldly. It's
[2:33] Speaker 2: getting dark, and the police headquarters. Those who are drifted
[2:42] Speaker 2: in at six o'clock. Those downstairs were making complaints. Those
[2:45] Speaker 2: upstairs complained against the two in my office, just because
[2:49] Speaker 2: they've been sent there.
[2:50] Speaker 4: Personally, I think it's a lot of unch.
[2:52] Speaker 5: Nobody asks you pick, Nobody turned to you and asks
[2:54] Speaker 5: for an opinion.
[2:55] Speaker 6: I didn't too.
[2:57] Speaker 5: The fact remains, Miss Morgan, that remains. Minutes ago, I
[3:00] Speaker 5: got a permit to carry a gun, and your permit
[3:03] Speaker 5: giver told.
[3:04] Speaker 7: Me I ought to stop and talk to you. That's
[3:06] Speaker 7: the fact.
[3:06] Speaker 4: I suppose. Now you've gotten the permit, you are going.
[3:09] Speaker 7: Out and buy a gun as soon as I leave here.
[3:11] Speaker 4: Polly, you need a gun like I need a hold.
[3:13] Speaker 5: Of so many things. You need vic manners. I let
[3:18] Speaker 5: you escort me, darling. Don't loust it up with dialogue.
[3:23] Speaker 4: That's why it goes Clovid. Not tell me why you
[3:25] Speaker 4: need that gun.
[3:26] Speaker 7: This morning again I told the permit giver, tell.
[3:30] Speaker 4: Me, men, she's got to defend herself. Shut up, Sick,
[3:35] Speaker 4: be an agent for poly Morgan and you get shut up, Vick.
[3:38] Speaker 4: You better tell me, Vick. Polly Morgan, her big singer
[3:41] Speaker 4: of sad ballads, a man's been calling her up, threatening
[3:44] Speaker 4: the way all.
[3:45] Speaker 7: Of you men threaten, whether you say it out loud
[3:48] Speaker 7: or not.
[3:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, pobly, the way we all do. Also, she says,
[3:52] Speaker 4: the man's following her.
[3:53] Speaker 5: You saw him, You saw him as well as I did.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Yeah, I saw him, Polly, did you?
[3:58] Speaker 7: Vic?
[3:59] Speaker 2: I saw a guy running on the street this morning,
[4:00] Speaker 2: Polly said, that's a man he was.
[4:04] Speaker 5: And when I went back to my apartment later he called.
[4:07] Speaker 5: He told me that was him who touched me in
[4:10] Speaker 5: the crowd. He said he'd be there tonight.
[4:13] Speaker 4: He's going to be where well I'm singing.
[4:16] Speaker 7: At the thirteen Club. He said he'd be at the
[4:19] Speaker 7: ringside tonight.
[4:20] Speaker 8: Okay, I'll be there if you want to come on,
[4:26] Speaker 8: come on, come on.
[4:33] Speaker 2: And the room suddenly empty of her and the man,
[4:35] Speaker 2: whose gesture of farewell was a shrug half begun, not finished,
[4:40] Speaker 2: and the autumn darkness has brought to a variety of things,
[4:43] Speaker 2: the rustle of silk perfumed only with the night, when
[4:46] Speaker 2: the scornful voice of a woman who walks close on
[4:48] Speaker 2: the scalpel edge of a private terror, the pyermit for
[4:52] Speaker 2: death held close to her, the grudging invitation to come
[4:55] Speaker 2: prevented if you can, and fillian against the time of
[4:58] Speaker 2: going with routine, the gathering, the sorting, the parceling out
[5:02] Speaker 2: of the day's violence. And then they glanced at the
[5:04] Speaker 2: wall clock and the realization that you could be late,
[5:14] Speaker 2: and at the canopied entrance of the thirteen Club find
[5:17] Speaker 2: Vic gnawing on the remains of a fingernail, pause long
[5:20] Speaker 2: enough to.
[5:20] Speaker 4: Tell Ally's Danny. I got a table ring side off.
[5:23] Speaker 2: Field to me, and Basha threw the decord of bare
[5:26] Speaker 2: shoulders and neckties bright with the signature of countasses through tears.
[5:32] Speaker 2: Wept into very dry martinis because Polly's song was nostalgia
[5:36] Speaker 2: with a coupveroard charge, and listened as Polly sang, her
[5:39] Speaker 2: body leaning against the wall of remembered pain.
[5:47] Speaker 9: Look at it, you know, ah watches any Why does
[6:05] Speaker 9: he makes her regard like it was an egg and
[6:07] Speaker 9: a pain, a draw down X amount of dollars for
[6:09] Speaker 9: a week, an act of runs into the floor.
[6:11] Speaker 4: Figures she's good. He is hard to believe, hard to
[6:16] Speaker 4: believe how she can sing with so much feelings.
[6:19] Speaker 9: Some girls think from here and hear from nowhere. Alle
[6:22] Speaker 9: sings from the ear in the highway.
[6:25] Speaker 2: It's difficult to figure. That can't happen though, that beef,
[6:28] Speaker 2: and mind you, it pays me well. This artificial heart.
[6:31] Speaker 2: She sets the beating in public places, she said. The
[6:33] Speaker 2: man who's been annoying her with the hear at ringside,
[6:35] Speaker 2: if you see him anywhere big?
[6:37] Speaker 4: How would I know? If I saw him?
[6:39] Speaker 2: A man running away from something in the street, that's
[6:41] Speaker 2: an annoyer. I get to urge myself sometimes, you know.
[6:45] Speaker 2: Any of these men are onas Yeah.
[6:46] Speaker 4: That one with the two blonds and a male antennant,
[6:49] Speaker 4: that's Jili Crane. His last wife made a settlement on him,
[6:52] Speaker 4: a native village in my lawker someplace he needs probably
[6:55] Speaker 4: lay good. Hey, that one.
[6:57] Speaker 2: It looks like scientists, Uh huh, a scientist with things
[7:01] Speaker 2: a dollar around here.
[7:01] Speaker 4: I go over to him and.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Discuss what's new and nuclear fission and there's always something new.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Polly interests him in terms of how soon she's going
[7:10] Speaker 2: to explode.
[7:12] Speaker 4: Do you think him a cult of science? The one
[7:15] Speaker 4: along hence the wall. Yeah, Daddy, I'm surprised with you.
[7:22] Speaker 4: Do not be taken in by the rough and tumbled.
[7:24] Speaker 9: Gree bub Hey, that's probably I heard a scream before?
[7:27] Speaker 9: Or where is it?
[7:28] Speaker 4: It sounds like I'm addressing room, Danny.
[7:29] Speaker 9: I think maybe take me to revict Yeah, sure, sure, come.
[7:31] Speaker 4: On in here, Danny to me, look at my Polly,
[7:44] Speaker 4: take it heasy, it's going to be all right.
[7:46] Speaker 7: Head of me?
[7:47] Speaker 4: Where you go? Miss Markham?
[7:50] Speaker 5: The gun?
[7:51] Speaker 4: Where'd he go? Miss Margham? Had this window? Danny looks
[7:53] Speaker 4: like through here we have seen him in the hall
[7:55] Speaker 4: of the kid. He must have got in while Polly
[7:57] Speaker 4: was on. What's the matter, Danny? Why do you look
[8:00] Speaker 4: like that?
[8:00] Speaker 2: I'm a got your budget for publicity.
[8:03] Speaker 4: But Danny, Danny, what kind of talk is that? At
[8:06] Speaker 4: the time?
[8:06] Speaker 5: That's what it is to you, mister Clover. A man
[8:09] Speaker 5: hides in here, waits for me, tears at me, and
[8:11] Speaker 5: you can identify Miss Morgan.
[8:13] Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, we have a pilot headquarters. I want
[8:16] Speaker 4: miss Morgan.
[8:16] Speaker 5: To get my coat.
[8:32] Speaker 2: No, oh and no, all right, here's more pictures.
[8:41] Speaker 4: Maybe his picture will be in this stack.
[8:44] Speaker 7: I'm getting really bored, mister Clover.
[8:46] Speaker 4: That's tough.
[8:47] Speaker 2: He finally saw the man up close, didn't Just this
[8:49] Speaker 2: is the way we operate. Bring you down the headquarters.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Let you look through pictures, hope that you will identify
[8:54] Speaker 2: someone in the gallery the man.
[8:55] Speaker 5: All right, all right, all right, only, why don't you
[8:58] Speaker 5: go sit on the other side of the table.
[9:01] Speaker 2: Oh, go ahead over there, luck, Miss Margan. I've got
[9:04] Speaker 2: a thing to tell you.
[9:05] Speaker 5: You're going to do it very badly. I've heard it
[9:07] Speaker 5: from poets.
[9:08] Speaker 2: If you're a name on a police file, it means
[9:10] Speaker 2: a job I've got to do. Outside of that, you
[9:11] Speaker 2: don't mean a thing in the world.
[9:13] Speaker 7: It really eats you.
[9:15] Speaker 4: Done, look at the pictures, really done?
[9:20] Speaker 7: All right, I'll look at the pictures.
[9:22] Speaker 2: Oh, hi, margavn Danny, Hello, Miss Martin, do you better
[9:28] Speaker 2: stand over there?
[9:29] Speaker 4: Margavian on the other side of the table. What uh
[9:32] Speaker 4: forget it for begun?
[9:34] Speaker 7: Oh?
[9:34] Speaker 4: This from the description Miss Morgan gave the artist and
[9:37] Speaker 4: technical there's a sketchy short term. Would you mind taking
[9:42] Speaker 4: a look at this, Miss margin?
[9:45] Speaker 7: This is him? All right, you're sure, almost exactly nose
[9:49] Speaker 7: little straight, her eyes a little further apart.
[9:51] Speaker 4: Thanks, miss Morgan. I'll take you back to your apartment.
[9:55] Speaker 7: Police precede you to mister Clover.
[10:03] Speaker 2: Stop at a desk on the way out, issue orders
[10:05] Speaker 2: for the printing and distribution of the likeness of a
[10:07] Speaker 2: man who, in Polly Morgan, had found a sum.
[10:10] Speaker 4: And reason of his loneliness.
[10:12] Speaker 2: A man who had touched her in the crowd, waited
[10:14] Speaker 2: for her in a darkened room, clawed at her because
[10:17] Speaker 2: she screamed at his despair. And take the woman home
[10:20] Speaker 2: in silence, and from there go to the silent furnished room,
[10:24] Speaker 2: draw down the bed covers, try for this night to.
[10:27] Speaker 4: Sleep it away.
[10:35] Speaker 2: And in the morning at headquarters be told there was
[10:38] Speaker 2: someone waiting for you in your office. Find him there
[10:40] Speaker 2: peeking at things furtively, trying to rearrange them on your desk,
[10:43] Speaker 2: because you walked in on him in a bad time.
[10:46] Speaker 7: Oh I.
[10:49] Speaker 9: They said you would be a while coming. Seems no
[10:52] Speaker 9: one expected you so.
[10:53] Speaker 4: Soon to find what you were looking for.
[10:55] Speaker 9: I wasn't looking for anything. It's a sort of a habit, fingering,
[11:00] Speaker 9: not mine to try it habit.
[11:03] Speaker 7: I am ashamed.
[11:05] Speaker 9: Honestly as I do.
[11:06] Speaker 4: Wanted to see me. Why that man, that man you
[11:09] Speaker 4: police are looking for?
[11:11] Speaker 10: Well I had no sooner finished tacking up his picture
[11:14] Speaker 10: in my office. Well it came to me like that,
[11:17] Speaker 10: it did. Oh, yes, Why that fellow is a guest
[11:20] Speaker 10: in my hotel. I own a hotel, Jean Prouty, and
[11:24] Speaker 10: he's a guest at my hotel. This man you want,
[11:26] Speaker 10: Lars Nielsen, a salesman out of Black River Pols, Wisconsin,
[11:30] Speaker 10: always comes to my hotel. When he said it's our city,
[11:32] Speaker 10: that's it because it's.
[11:33] Speaker 7: Clean and quiet, just old people. Really, oh gladly. But
[11:40] Speaker 7: he's not there.
[11:41] Speaker 10: I rushed up to his room to tell him you
[11:43] Speaker 10: people wanted him for something.
[11:44] Speaker 7: And he wasn't there.
[11:45] Speaker 9: I just don't know where he might be.
[11:48] Speaker 10: Yes, the fellow who's always bragging about what he calls
[11:51] Speaker 10: dingy contact speaking.
[11:54] Speaker 5: I saw him from the window, mister clover, he's on
[11:56] Speaker 5: his way up here.
[11:57] Speaker 11: What I do.
[12:00] Speaker 6: Ask? Please hurry.
[12:22] Speaker 9: Shake it out of my hands.
[12:24] Speaker 6: I can't put it down. Dag a gun out it.
[12:29] Speaker 5: I can't can't on clinch my face, take a gun away, please, Okay.
[12:35] Speaker 4: Okay, I go.
[12:36] Speaker 7: What happened in there?
[12:42] Speaker 12: There see him.
[12:55] Speaker 7: I shot him. I'm shot him.

[13:35] Speaker 4: It's days. We're ripped from the.

[14:02] Speaker 2: You'll hardly hear the sobbing because the winds are high
[14:05] Speaker 2: on winter's eve.
[14:07] Speaker 4: Walk into it.
[14:07] Speaker 2: Kid, It's time for another dream. But where I was
[14:15] Speaker 2: September Linger to give something to remember it by the
[14:18] Speaker 2: man lying in death, his blood etching out a new
[14:22] Speaker 2: pattern on the monotone of the rug, watching the delicacy
[14:25] Speaker 2: of its flowing design. The woman who had waited on
[14:27] Speaker 2: his dying the woman who had killed him.
[14:30] Speaker 5: You're sure, you're sure he's dead. Yes, I didn't want
[14:35] Speaker 5: it that way. I only wanted what this morning to
[14:40] Speaker 5: frighten him in spite.
[14:42] Speaker 7: Of what I told you before.
[14:43] Speaker 5: All I wanted was to scare him away so I
[14:47] Speaker 5: wouldn't touch me like that, look at me like that.
[14:50] Speaker 2: That's why you got the permit for the gun, only
[14:52] Speaker 2: to frighten him away.
[14:54] Speaker 7: I want him out of my sight.
[14:56] Speaker 5: I want him taken out of here, to understand, we'll take.
[14:57] Speaker 4: Care of it.
[15:00] Speaker 2: There are other cases like yours, miss Morgan, cases where
[15:02] Speaker 2: the woman didn't find it necessary to kill.
[15:05] Speaker 7: I'm not like those women. I'm different. You've looked at
[15:10] Speaker 7: me long, you've heard me sing.
[15:15] Speaker 10: You know I'm different.
[15:16] Speaker 4: Yes, you were killed.
[15:17] Speaker 5: Do you think I could have stopped him with sweet talk,
[15:20] Speaker 5: the torch song? With my lips against his cheek? Is
[15:22] Speaker 5: that what they did those other women you told me about.
[15:24] Speaker 5: That's how they stopped it.
[15:26] Speaker 7: It was locked, but it got in after his in.
[15:31] Speaker 5: I opened it, neshed and please go, I remember I
[15:33] Speaker 5: said please. He stood beating on my door and beating
[15:37] Speaker 5: and beating and beating. I screamed, and then finally he
[15:40] Speaker 5: went away. Through the kitchen window. I heard the crash
[15:44] Speaker 5: of glass.
[15:45] Speaker 7: He must have come up by the fire skate open
[15:47] Speaker 7: the window through here you see, you see, I'm from here.
[16:00] Speaker 4: He crowded you into the other room where you killed him.
[16:02] Speaker 7: I asked him into that room. I said it would
[16:05] Speaker 7: be nicer there, we could talk. Gave me time to
[16:07] Speaker 7: get the gun. When he saw he laughed. He was laughing.
[16:13] Speaker 5: When you want me to go somewhere with you whatever
[16:17] Speaker 5: has to be done.
[16:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, you're well, miss Mark. I didn't live the afternoon.
[16:33] Speaker 9: Danny.
[16:33] Speaker 4: Oh, thank you, Geno, and same to you likewise. I'm sure, Danny,
[16:39] Speaker 4: what's the matter with you?
[16:40] Speaker 9: Busy busy visual?
[16:42] Speaker 2: I won't keep the Geno all right, it's all right,
[16:45] Speaker 2: what's on your mind?
[16:46] Speaker 9: I will relate to you the pale of Sogeant Gino
[16:49] Speaker 9: ptaically on his trials of the last six hours, the
[16:52] Speaker 9: interim between the time you found with the laws knew
[16:54] Speaker 9: from shot to death. I'm gonnawn if anybody was a
[16:58] Speaker 9: right arm to anybody, I am to the police department.
[17:01] Speaker 4: All that goes without saying.
[17:03] Speaker 9: You know, agenda to it. Upon the arrival of mister
[17:06] Speaker 9: Neilson in our.
[17:07] Speaker 4: Morg sure his name is Neilsen. You're fighting me, Danny,
[17:11] Speaker 4: I'm sorry, accepted.
[17:14] Speaker 9: Upon his arrival at our morgue, I had him mister Prouty,
[17:17] Speaker 9: the hotel man, who did indeed identify him as his
[17:20] Speaker 9: late departed guest named Lars Neilson. Go on, and since
[17:24] Speaker 9: mister Neilson had been a denizen of Black River Falls, Wisconsin,
[17:27] Speaker 9: form the chief of police there. Indeed I did, and
[17:29] Speaker 9: a fine fellow here is move come on. I related
[17:34] Speaker 9: him the events concerning mister Neilson and Miss Polly Morgan.
[17:37] Speaker 9: Then I asked him a little something about mister Neilsen.
[17:40] Speaker 9: Just what he said, fust I know this fancy suits. However,
[17:45] Speaker 9: he asked me which Lars Neilsen I was talking about,
[17:47] Speaker 9: since his records revealed two such having resided in Black
[17:50] Speaker 9: River Pole. And I told him to give me info
[17:53] Speaker 9: one vote. An hour ago he called back and he
[17:56] Speaker 9: said this one Lars Neilsen was a traveling salesman who's
[18:00] Speaker 9: almost doing Black Liver Falls the other words, of all things,
[18:03] Speaker 9: a resident of New York, according to his folks whom
[18:05] Speaker 9: he interrogated. Hearing this, I have located in our city.
[18:08] Speaker 9: Such a mister Neilsen, whose address I now hand for you.
[18:12] Speaker 4: Thank you, Gino still mention it.
[18:14] Speaker 9: But now Danny, I will twit you the way I
[18:16] Speaker 9: was twitted. The Chief of police did inform me that
[18:19] Speaker 9: Miss Polly Morgan has an ant in black Liver Falls
[18:22] Speaker 9: and proud of the fact since miss Morgan is nationally famous,
[18:26] Speaker 9: and that Danny is my agenda for the.
[18:28] Speaker 13: Day, cannot pay some other time after I got a.
[18:58] Speaker 4: Touch schedule seremy in the faith. Please, mister Neilton, may
[19:01] Speaker 4: I come in.
[19:01] Speaker 9: One of my kids beat up on one of them bullies.
[19:04] Speaker 13: But mister, whatever my kids do, I stand behind him.
[19:06] Speaker 4: A hundred percent.
[19:07] Speaker 2: Man was killed today, a man named Lars Neilson Nielsen.
[19:10] Speaker 4: That's my name.
[19:11] Speaker 9: Look how I'm living.
[19:13] Speaker 10: Come on in.
[19:15] Speaker 4: Just give me a minute to vacuum the cat let
[19:16] Speaker 4: off this carpet. My wife works all day so I
[19:24] Speaker 4: won't get lonely. She leaves me with the hoover and
[19:26] Speaker 4: the cat and the kids to my feet and throw
[19:28] Speaker 4: out of the house. I wanted to ask you for
[19:30] Speaker 4: my pardon. I want to apologize something to you. The
[19:32] Speaker 4: reason I support this robe and night shur it is
[19:35] Speaker 4: I work night sleep days. Huh sleep uh.
[19:40] Speaker 9: Lars Nielsen is dead.
[19:41] Speaker 4: Huh it was in the papers. Who gets a chance
[19:44] Speaker 4: at him in this house?
[19:46] Speaker 9: Why isn't it hey?
[19:47] Speaker 4: I couldn't.
[19:49] Speaker 7: I couldn't put.
[19:52] Speaker 4: I was a kid once back in Black River Falls
[19:54] Speaker 4: and Wisconsin. There was another kid who was a kid
[19:56] Speaker 4: with me, also went by the name of Lars Nielsen.
[20:00] Speaker 4: This got confusing sometimes, especially on calling up for a date.
[20:04] Speaker 4: The girl would say which Liars Nielson? Both our family
[20:07] Speaker 4: descended from the same Swedish family tree made us look
[20:10] Speaker 4: like sort of coloring, you know. I would describe myself
[20:13] Speaker 4: pointedly that Lars is dead. We checked Black River Pole police.
[20:18] Speaker 4: The man who was killed came from there thirteen years old.
[20:22] Speaker 4: When I saw him last, I was fourteen. Tell me
[20:25] Speaker 4: what you can remember about him so long ago years.
[20:28] Speaker 4: Don't ask me to cut how many it will help us,
[20:30] Speaker 4: it'll you're trying to tell me he's dead because somebody's
[20:34] Speaker 4: shocked broken into a woman's apartment to steal No Liars,
[20:41] Speaker 4: I've been sitting here remembering him from a picnic high
[20:44] Speaker 4: school stuff, you know, some of a picnic at the
[20:46] Speaker 4: falls and a kid, a girl, oh twelve years old.
[20:49] Speaker 4: Maybe Lars went crazy for you know, like a thirteen
[20:52] Speaker 4: year old does at that age, he figures it impresses
[20:55] Speaker 4: girls to break his neck hanging from trees, to beat
[20:57] Speaker 4: up on a friend. She chose me lovely picnic. I
[21:04] Speaker 4: shouldn't laugh. Huh the little girl? He remember who she was? Yeah? Sure,
[21:09] Speaker 4: certainly for lots of reasons. First, she was only twelve.
[21:13] Speaker 4: Second to ant, she was visiting chaperone on the picnic. Third,
[21:16] Speaker 4: she got a big crush on me. Well, I was
[21:18] Speaker 4: sophisticated at the age of fourteen. That made me attracted
[21:21] Speaker 4: to twelve year olds. I kept shoving her away. On
[21:24] Speaker 4: the other liar, she didn't want him. You remember her name?
[21:27] Speaker 4: How could I miss it? This jockey's whispered in my
[21:29] Speaker 4: ear every time I turn over. Polly Morgan, big deal
[21:33] Speaker 4: with a ballot. Personally, I can't see if you haven't
[21:35] Speaker 4: seen her since Black River Fall? Look at that. I
[21:38] Speaker 4: got a wife with hay fever. She's spreading here and there.
[21:41] Speaker 2: She screams at my kids, and I'm very fond of it.
[21:45] Speaker 4: Why should I go looking for exotics like Polly Morgan?
[21:48] Speaker 4: Marl Neilsen? You see, I answered my question. Oh good evening, Danny,
[22:17] Speaker 4: come on in, Thanks, Dick. I called the thirteen twelve.
[22:21] Speaker 4: A little while ago, the manager said, Miss Morgan was
[22:23] Speaker 4: in her dressing room, but you were no place around
[22:26] Speaker 4: at probably five minutes afternoon. As soon as you department
[22:29] Speaker 4: let it go on our own cognizance. What are they
[22:31] Speaker 4: gonna do? Call it justifiable homicide? We'll see, bick, guy,
[22:35] Speaker 4: I wanted to talk to you before I talked to her. Sure,
[22:38] Speaker 4: won't you say down something you drink? No? Thanks, Bick?
[22:43] Speaker 4: What kind of woman is Polly Morgan?
[22:46] Speaker 2: The greatest ballancing in the company? For besides that, thick
[22:50] Speaker 2: as a person you saw perform you know what about men?
[22:54] Speaker 4: That's what I mean? You saw she was right, Danny,
[22:59] Speaker 4: I did try to get to it. Can't blame me, Kenny.
[23:03] Speaker 4: I got teeth marks on this, and I go from
[23:05] Speaker 4: thinking about it. They don't come like her. Only book checked. Yeah,
[23:10] Speaker 4: but what makes her like she is? Well, why do
[23:13] Speaker 4: you think she hates men? I kid myself in the
[23:16] Speaker 4: thinking she's afraid to let herself go. She always been
[23:19] Speaker 4: like that. It's a funny thing. What is she's changed? Oh?
[23:24] Speaker 4: How the week ten days ago? It happened. But then
[23:28] Speaker 4: she started smiling to herself, Well, what do you mean? Well,
[23:31] Speaker 4: I was in a dressing room when it happened. She
[23:34] Speaker 4: got a phone called first she she seems stunned. She
[23:37] Speaker 4: almost fainted. All she did was say yes into the phone.
[23:41] Speaker 4: When she hung it up, it seemed like something inside
[23:42] Speaker 4: of it was glowing. I go on, well, well, nothing
[23:46] Speaker 4: much more, Danny, except she's been sneaking away after recording
[23:49] Speaker 4: days after performances. Yeah, something else that. Has she ever
[23:54] Speaker 4: talked to you about her past life? No? Not, but
[23:57] Speaker 4: I've wondered about it because has it? Recruitio the song
[24:01] Speaker 4: she sings best, I'm in a mood forul love once
[24:03] Speaker 4: in a while, these foolish things so raven songs like
[24:05] Speaker 4: a aw from one season.
[24:07] Speaker 2: Oh, I've noticed. I'm glad to talk to her a
[24:11] Speaker 2: bit if you want to go.
[24:12] Speaker 4: Along, Sure, Sure I do. I guess the manager didn't
[24:29] Speaker 4: hear about my getting fired. Man, he passed me right
[24:32] Speaker 4: into her dressing room. Listen, listen to that dolls saying
[24:40] Speaker 4: no you than me? Why they like her too? Yeah?
[24:57] Speaker 4: And I would just killed her, man. She can ask
[24:59] Speaker 4: the Benji's a week can get it. Maybe I've been
[25:03] Speaker 4: asking you, Danny, but you haven't been answering. What are
[25:05] Speaker 4: we here for?
[25:06] Speaker 7: What?
[25:06] Speaker 4: Is your making the dormous part?
[25:10] Speaker 7: You too?
[25:11] Speaker 4: Do you want everybody to hear what I have to
[25:12] Speaker 4: tell you about? What Lars Nielsen?
[25:16] Speaker 5: That's the reason you're using today in my dressing room?
[25:19] Speaker 7: What do you want me to do? Did you talk
[25:22] Speaker 7: him into this? Pick?
[25:23] Speaker 4: Holly? Baby asked me to come with him. I don't
[25:25] Speaker 4: have any idea.
[25:25] Speaker 5: I asked you, what do you want me to do?
[25:26] Speaker 4: I answer question?
[25:27] Speaker 5: I answered questions all afternoon.
[25:30] Speaker 7: You know what happened? You know how I killed that man?
[25:32] Speaker 4: You know, Naras Nielsen? Why didn't you tell me that?
[25:35] Speaker 7: No him, no man like him? Vic?
[25:37] Speaker 4: Tell me once more about that phone call?
[25:39] Speaker 7: What's he talking about?
[25:40] Speaker 4: I don't know. Dad afraid to tell me in front
[25:42] Speaker 4: of her. Vic, No, it's not that one me. It
[25:44] Speaker 4: was nothing. Polly got a phone call last week. She
[25:47] Speaker 4: felt happy about it, like and I was sure, sure, Babby,
[25:53] Speaker 4: I just want to clear it up. So I told
[25:55] Speaker 4: him he got what phone call from Lars Nielsen? Wasn't it?
[26:01] Speaker 4: That's right?
[26:02] Speaker 9: She did feel like she was breathing the name. Hey
[26:06] Speaker 9: shot up Lars.
[26:08] Speaker 4: Nielsen from Black River Falls, Wisconson.
[26:10] Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about.
[26:11] Speaker 4: Where you spent a vacation fifteen years ago.
[26:14] Speaker 7: Maybe I did. I've been lots of places.
[26:16] Speaker 4: Black River Falls is a vacation you never forgot.
[26:20] Speaker 7: Remember the picnic, Sick, get him out of here.
[26:23] Speaker 4: Look, Danny, just sit right where you are, Vicick, I
[26:27] Speaker 4: was kidding about Si. Look baby, what do you want
[26:30] Speaker 4: me to do? Remember the picnic? This Morgan. There were
[26:32] Speaker 4: two boys there, both of them named Lars Neilson. Nothing
[26:35] Speaker 4: strange about that in that lake country, especially where most
[26:38] Speaker 4: families come from the same stock.
[26:39] Speaker 5: Thank you very much for the Information's not quite you
[26:43] Speaker 5: fell in love with one of those boys.
[26:46] Speaker 4: Oh what is this, Danny? What are you talking about?
[26:48] Speaker 4: Fifteen years ago?
[26:49] Speaker 2: Polly was only twelve years old. That was for Polly
[26:53] Speaker 2: because Polly built it, made a memory and exaggerator.
[26:56] Speaker 4: What do you know?
[26:56] Speaker 5: What do you know?
[26:57] Speaker 4: Saggerated? And no other man was allowed in her life?
[27:00] Speaker 7: Holly YouTube, Vic what do you know?
[27:03] Speaker 4: And Lars Nielsen called it come to New York. That
[27:05] Speaker 4: was the phone call you saw, Vic, You saw what
[27:07] Speaker 4: I did to her. Look, Danny, you can't make anything
[27:09] Speaker 4: out of a kid pulling him love with another kid.
[27:11] Speaker 7: You're can kill him, kill him? How wrong he is?
[27:13] Speaker 4: Probaly started to sneak away to meet Lars Neilson and
[27:16] Speaker 4: tried desperately to make up for fifteen lost years. And
[27:19] Speaker 4: then she found out it was the wrong Lars Nielsen,
[27:22] Speaker 4: the wrong the same name, the same color, all your songs,
[27:27] Speaker 4: probably all the songs that have made you famous, all
[27:29] Speaker 4: from the same time, fifteen years ago, a summer memory.
[27:35] Speaker 4: That's why he killed him, Oh bully, because he was.
[27:38] Speaker 2: Pulling him when you got the permit for the gun,
[27:40] Speaker 2: and you were just what you're going to do, the
[27:42] Speaker 2: whole thing, a man following your threatening phony.
[27:46] Speaker 5: She made love to me. He told me he was
[27:50] Speaker 5: someone else, and I believe him. All those years will
[28:00] Speaker 5: fifteen years remember waiting, and then I found out it
[28:08] Speaker 5: wasn't Hitten at all.
[28:13] Speaker 2: Polly, Polly Baby Phil Phil In the chill of autumn night,
[28:39] Speaker 2: Broadway echoes that sounds heard only in darkness, leading whispers,
[28:44] Speaker 2: a woman's laughter, floating down to your end of the bar,
[28:47] Speaker 2: footsteps that fade when you turn a corner, you run
[28:51] Speaker 2: toward them, reach out your hand. There's nothing only a
[28:55] Speaker 2: closing door at the end of the long cord. It's Broadway,
[29:01] Speaker 2: the gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomer mile in the world.
[29:07] Speaker 4: Broadway My Beat, So.
[29:33] Speaker 9: Night on ETN presents You've been listening to some of
[29:35] Speaker 9: the best in radio drama with Bibber McGhee and Malay
[29:39] Speaker 9: and Broadway is My Beats. Join us again Monday evening
[29:43] Speaker 9: at the same time Mine Old Bot when presents drag
[29:47] Speaker 9: Nets and.
[29:48] Speaker 11: Escape Welcome Back.
[31:04] Speaker 1: Well, this is one of those episodes where I think
[31:07] Speaker 1: Danny's treatment of the murderer rob is my modern sensibility
[31:13] Speaker 1: is the wrong way. Although I think it's not too
[31:17] Speaker 1: unrealistic for the times, and I suppose it's hard to
[31:22] Speaker 1: feel bad for her sins it did turn out she
[31:25] Speaker 1: was guilty, But I think what is more problematic is
[31:30] Speaker 1: just how incredibly bonkers the solution to this case is.
[31:36] Speaker 1: And they try to do a little bit of slot
[31:38] Speaker 1: a hand to cover that, to establish some very similitude,
[31:42] Speaker 1: to make the whole thing seem more realistic. As Danny
[31:47] Speaker 1: assured us that it was perfectly plausible for Polly to
[31:51] Speaker 1: run into two different boys named wars Nielsen. Nice things
[31:58] Speaker 1: strange about it in that late country, especially where most
[32:03] Speaker 1: families come from the same stock, and I have to
[32:07] Speaker 1: appreciate that. As Danny shares his heretofore unknown expertise in
[32:13] Speaker 1: Wisconsin demography. But to me, it answers the wrong question,
[32:18] Speaker 1: because as odd as that is, it's the least implausible
[32:23] Speaker 1: part of the fact that Paully built her entire adult
[32:29] Speaker 1: life and a fifteen year singing career as a national
[32:35] Speaker 1: sensation on a crush she had as a twelve year
[32:40] Speaker 1: old girl at a summer vacation and ended up committing
[32:46] Speaker 1: murder as a result of the same thing. Not only that,
[32:50] Speaker 1: but salesman Lairs when he came to town and decided
[32:55] Speaker 1: that he wanted to connect with this girl that had
[33:00] Speaker 1: become famous, who he remembered having met one summer. Instead
[33:07] Speaker 1: of just going to a show and introducing himself and saying, yeah,
[33:12] Speaker 1: we came from the same hometown and I met you
[33:15] Speaker 1: that summer, he schemed to impersonate his distant relative who
[33:23] Speaker 1: had the same name as him and who he knew
[33:28] Speaker 1: she was madly in love with. Somehow, Now, I was
[33:34] Speaker 1: thinking this would be a little less plausible if we
[33:38] Speaker 1: assumed that both Hally and Danny were wrong, and that
[33:43] Speaker 1: salesman Lars didn't actually set out to deceive her, that
[33:48] Speaker 1: he just went up to her and said a I'm
[33:52] Speaker 1: Lars Nielsen. We met one summer back when we were
[33:56] Speaker 1: kids in Black River Falls. Assuming you know you're going
[34:01] Speaker 1: up to someone in the big city and you're both
[34:04] Speaker 1: from this from the same small town, and that's an
[34:08] Speaker 1: instant connection. Now, under this scenario, salesman Lars might have
[34:14] Speaker 1: realized at some point there was a case of mistaken identity,
[34:18] Speaker 1: but he may have thought it's an innocent, minor mistake.
[34:23] Speaker 1: I mean that when we were kids at the time,
[34:26] Speaker 1: and she thinks I'm this distant relative. But she's getting
[34:31] Speaker 1: to know me, and if things work out, we'll just
[34:34] Speaker 1: laugh about it later because I can really sell myself
[34:39] Speaker 1: to her and she'll really like me. It's not like
[34:44] Speaker 1: she's going to get upset about this and concoct in
[34:48] Speaker 1: elaborate murder scheme. Now, if that had been the case,
[34:53] Speaker 1: it would have been a little bit more grounded. Laws
[34:57] Speaker 1: would be a real, latable human being with failings who
[35:04] Speaker 1: made a tragic error coupled with perhaps some on ethical
[35:10] Speaker 1: failings and a misunderstanding lads to death in the way
[35:16] Speaker 1: that human beings will often kill each other. That would
[35:20] Speaker 1: be grounded. It would feel human. And the problem with
[35:24] Speaker 1: this episode and its solution is that it doesn't. When
[35:28] Speaker 1: I first started playing Broadways my Beat, a long time
[35:32] Speaker 1: listener on Patreon supporter commented that Broadways My Beat was
[35:38] Speaker 1: a bit of a soap opera, and I did not
[35:41] Speaker 1: see that sort of connection. I'd mainly listened to the
[35:45] Speaker 1: nineteen forty nine and fifty episodes, but if you'd heard
[35:49] Speaker 1: an episode like this, I can see how you could
[35:52] Speaker 1: get that idea, because this is an episode where I
[35:58] Speaker 1: don't think it hits the best edition of Broadways My Beat,
[36:01] Speaker 1: because I think Broadways my Beat is at its best
[36:06] Speaker 1: when it deals with humanity, perhaps in a stylized way,
[36:12] Speaker 1: but it is relatable to human beings as they live
[36:16] Speaker 1: and exist and breathe in New York City of the era.
[36:21] Speaker 1: This storyline really once freak can and fine, We're done.
[36:28] Speaker 1: They could have sent a letter to the Hummers and
[36:30] Speaker 1: sold it as a plot for mister Comeleon or mister King.
[36:35] Speaker 1: You'd probably just need some competing suspects. I add some
[36:39] Speaker 1: competing suspects, a little bit more shoutiness and a superfluous disguise,
[36:46] Speaker 1: and this could totally be a mister Comelean plot, which
[36:49] Speaker 1: is just not what you expect from Broadways My Beat.
[36:53] Speaker 1: Listener comments and feedback now and we turn to our

[37:31] Speaker 1: programs from the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service and
[37:37] Speaker 1: the American Forces Network and things like that, it has
[37:41] Speaker 1: to be even more so if you actually heard them
[37:45] Speaker 1: when they were first aired. And there are so many people.
[37:50] Speaker 1: I remember one listener who actually heard it. She wasn't
[37:58] Speaker 1: in the military, but her while there was, so this

[38:44] Speaker 1: for dragnetwere he.
[38:47] Speaker 14: Came straight back this way, just where I'm welcome. I
[38:50] Speaker 14: was at the end of the calenter there, just where
[38:52] Speaker 14: you are. He had a brown paper bag in one
[38:55] Speaker 14: hand and it was just a couple of feet from me.
[38:57] Speaker 14: He put his other hand in his coat pocket and
[38:59] Speaker 14: he came up with a gun, pointed it right at me.
[39:01] Speaker 4: His door was empty at the times, or no customers around.
[39:04] Speaker 14: Yeah, that's right, just myself and my son in law,
[39:07] Speaker 14: Herb in the back room. I guess he heard this
[39:09] Speaker 14: thief talking to me and he came out to see
[39:11] Speaker 14: what it was all about.
[39:12] Speaker 4: That's when the fireworks started.
[39:13] Speaker 14: And what happened, well, he made Herb line up along
[39:16] Speaker 14: the counter right next to me. By this time, he
[39:18] Speaker 14: had all the loot he wanted in that paper bag
[39:20] Speaker 14: he was carrying. Just when I thought he was going
[39:23] Speaker 14: to leave, he turned around all of a sudden. He
[39:24] Speaker 14: said to Herb, you think you're a smart guy, don't you.
[39:27] Speaker 14: Then he slugged her with the gun brought it right
[39:30] Speaker 14: down on the side of his head all his might.
[39:32] Speaker 14: That's where the fight started. Just about yeah, Herb fell
[39:35] Speaker 14: down on one knee. There was a great, big gash
[39:38] Speaker 14: on the side of his face. Even when he was down,
[39:40] Speaker 14: the thief kept slugging Herb, kept pounding him in the
[39:43] Speaker 14: face with that gun.
[39:44] Speaker 4: Herb wasn't doing anything.
[39:46] Speaker 14: I got good and sword.
