[3:06] Speaker 3: marlow Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We
[3:19] Speaker 3: bring you tonight's transcribe story. Air for g String.
[3:34] Speaker 4: There's nothing really wrong with a hot summer. If some
[3:37] Speaker 4: sadists really wanted to bring out the worst in anybody,
[3:40] Speaker 4: particularly me, after a steaming day, all he has to
[3:43] Speaker 4: do is expose me to wear conditioning. Take, for instance,
[3:46] Speaker 4: the Broadview Hotel, which was on Olive Street in downtown La.
[3:50] Speaker 4: It ground out alternating currents of cold air from what
[3:53] Speaker 4: could laughingly be called the lobby. I'd revolved through the
[3:57] Speaker 4: usual doors and stood squinting into the icy darkness. When
[4:01] Speaker 4: my eyes leveled off again, I made my way to
[4:03] Speaker 4: the elevators, sinking into the deep piled carpeting up to
[4:06] Speaker 4: my hot and cold ankles. By the time I reached
[4:10] Speaker 4: room nine seven to two, I was in the first
[4:12] Speaker 4: stages of a chill. Yeah. Conditioning is a marvelous invention.
[4:17] Speaker 4: It guarantees the summer cold for life. Oh you're mister
[4:27] Speaker 4: marlow that's right. That makes you mister Olmand. Huh come in,
[4:31] Speaker 4: come in sure? Ah, Yeah, nothing like i'd pictured you,
[4:36] Speaker 4: mister Olmand.
[4:37] Speaker 5: Sit down, please, mister marlow pictured me, I don't understand.
[4:42] Speaker 4: Well, all my life I had heard about Philadelphia lawyers.
[4:46] Speaker 4: Somewhere along the line, I drew up a mental eight
[4:48] Speaker 4: by ten of a Yeah, well it doesn't matter. You
[4:51] Speaker 4: just don't look the prototype.
[4:52] Speaker 5: Perhaps that's because I'm only a junior partner in the firm,
[4:54] Speaker 5: mister Marlowe. H Maybe that's it. You know, it's an
[4:57] Speaker 5: odd thing about prototype, mister Malo. They'll trick you.
[4:59] Speaker 4: Oh.
[5:00] Speaker 5: For example, I've always had the idea that men and
[5:02] Speaker 5: your well, i'll call it a profession.
[5:04] Speaker 4: That's nice.
[5:05] Speaker 5: Have you that men in your profession always wore trench coats?
[5:08] Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's cause Bogot looks so good in them.
[5:10] Speaker 5: Yes, Well, about our business together. I'll be here in
[5:14] Speaker 5: Los Angeles a few days, representing the firm in a
[5:16] Speaker 5: number of ways. But while I'm here, I hope to
[5:18] Speaker 5: locate a man by the name of Buff Ryan to
[5:20] Speaker 5: say that first name was Buff. Yes, odd name, isn't it. Yeah,
[5:23] Speaker 5: But that's beside the point. This Buff Ryan, it seems,
[5:26] Speaker 5: has inherited a small amount of money from a maiden
[5:28] Speaker 5: nat who passed away some time ago in Philadelphia. According
[5:31] Speaker 5: to our information, my firm is executor of her estate.
[5:35] Speaker 5: Mister Ryan came west about a year ago, and until
[5:38] Speaker 5: approximately six months ago he could be reached at a
[5:40] Speaker 5: Waring Street address in care of A. C. A.
[5:42] Speaker 4: Douglas.
[5:43] Speaker 5: But our corresponds to him there has been returned marked
[5:46] Speaker 5: unknown at this address.
[5:47] Speaker 4: That's the last record you have on him.
[5:49] Speaker 5: Yes, that's the last We've written to this U. C. A. Douglas,
[5:52] Speaker 5: but received no answer from him. I've called him since
[5:55] Speaker 5: I arrived in town. There's been no answer.
[5:57] Speaker 4: Well, maybe they both left Tom moved away.
[6:00] Speaker 5: That's possible, of course, but perhaps you'll find that out
[6:03] Speaker 5: when you get to checking on mister Ryan.
[6:05] Speaker 4: I see, Well, I'm to find him if I can,
[6:06] Speaker 4: and tell him about this inheritance. Huh. By the way,
[6:09] Speaker 4: how much is it?
[6:10] Speaker 5: Five thousand dollars? Just about misleader's entire estate?
[6:13] Speaker 4: Mis Leader sounds like a comment.
[6:15] Speaker 5: Her full name, you may want? That was Julie Leading.
[6:19] Speaker 5: I'm sorry I can't show you a picture of mister Ryan.
[6:21] Speaker 5: I'm expecting one to be sent out to me while
[6:23] Speaker 5: I'm here. Expected it this morning as a matter of fact.
[6:25] Speaker 4: Yeah, well maybe a description of him will do. Have
[6:28] Speaker 4: you ever seen him? No?
[6:30] Speaker 5: No, but we were able to find out that he's
[6:33] Speaker 5: slightly less than six feet tall, like brown hair, straight
[6:36] Speaker 5: blue eyes, weighed about one hundred and eighty pounds when
[6:39] Speaker 5: he left Philadelphia year ago. No distinguishing marks about him,
[6:42] Speaker 5: according to our description. Oh yes, and he's about thirty
[6:46] Speaker 5: five years old. Oh that's pretty complete. Oh you better
[6:50] Speaker 5: let me have the last address you have on Ryan.
[6:52] Speaker 5: Of course, I've written it down for you with the
[6:56] Speaker 5: phone number i've been calling. I'll be handling most of
[6:59] Speaker 5: my busy affairs right here at the hotel, mister Milow.
[7:02] Speaker 5: I'll appreciate it if you'll check in occasionally let me
[7:05] Speaker 5: know your progress. Oh sure, be glad to stay around
[7:08] Speaker 5: three o'clock this afternoon.
[7:09] Speaker 4: Okay, tell you everything I know. But then yeah, but
[7:13] Speaker 4: then it might not be a thing.
[7:14] Speaker 5: I know your reputation, mister milol. You'll find him, I'm sure.
[7:17] Speaker 4: I don't get me wrong. It needs to be found.
[7:20] Speaker 4: I'll probably find him, but I have missed you know.
[7:30] Speaker 4: That's why I should want to rock the confidence of
[7:32] Speaker 4: a Philadelphia lawyer. I don't know. Maybe it was because
[7:36] Speaker 4: Martin Alman, for all his conservative Brooks Brothers attire, looked
[7:40] Speaker 4: too much or not enough like what he was supposed
[7:42] Speaker 4: to be. Maybe it was because the East Los Angeles
[7:45] Speaker 4: address he had handed me for buff Ryan was a
[7:47] Speaker 4: cent to be thirty degrees hotter. It was too Whering
[7:52] Speaker 4: Street was lined with gray little houses surrounded by small
[7:55] Speaker 4: gray lawns that it was straggling gray trees. The color
[7:59] Speaker 4: scheme was the the direct result of long years of
[8:01] Speaker 4: constant neglect. I knocked a long time on the door
[8:05] Speaker 4: of the C. A. Douglas residence. The porch was livered
[8:08] Speaker 4: with old papers and assortment of throwaways and leaves. The
[8:12] Speaker 4: only response I got was mu scrawny cat, also gray,
[8:16] Speaker 4: who leaped up on the porch rail to spit and
[8:18] Speaker 4: yewl at me. I yowled back and walked off the
[8:21] Speaker 4: porch in the general direction of my car. That's when
[8:25] Speaker 4: I noticed a smaller gray air house behind this one,
[8:28] Speaker 4: on the same lot, and I thought I saw a
[8:31] Speaker 4: curtain at the front window move slightly. A cat dogged
[8:35] Speaker 4: my steps back to sea. Yeah, oh, pardon me, but
[8:54] Speaker 4: I'm trying to locate CA Douglas. Does he still live
[8:56] Speaker 4: in the house in front of you?
[8:58] Speaker 6: I don't know. I haven't seen mister Douglas quite a while.
[9:00] Speaker 4: Oh you you think he moved away?
[9:04] Speaker 7: Maybe?
[9:04] Speaker 6: I don't know. How would I know?
[9:07] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[9:09] Speaker 6: Well, look, I'm in kind of a hurry. I'm getting dressed,
[9:11] Speaker 6: go to work.
[9:12] Speaker 4: How long have you lived here?
[9:14] Speaker 6: What difference does it make?
[9:15] Speaker 4: Did you ever know a guy named buff Ryan?
[9:18] Speaker 6: Of course not?
[9:19] Speaker 4: Why? Of course not? Why not? Just know?
[9:22] Speaker 6: Listen, I don't know hardly anybody, And I don't know
[9:24] Speaker 6: you what now it's the phone?
[9:27] Speaker 5: Go away?
[9:27] Speaker 6: Will you please, mister?
[9:30] Speaker 4: No? No, I don't think I will. Honey. She was tall,
[9:36] Speaker 4: very blonde, very good to look at, a fresh blue
[9:39] Speaker 4: housecoat wrapped around just the way it should and even
[9:43] Speaker 4: after I entered the spotless little living room, the faint
[9:45] Speaker 4: aura of her cologne ling it on. I couldn't tell
[9:48] Speaker 4: anything about the phone conversation she was having in the
[9:51] Speaker 4: next room, but I could tell a lot about her
[9:54] Speaker 4: by the several scantily clad pictures of her that greeted
[9:56] Speaker 4: me from various points of the room. Yeah, I could
[10:00] Speaker 4: tell a lot about her.
[10:01] Speaker 6: Huh, Hey, what's the idea? You just can't walk in here?
[10:04] Speaker 6: Do you want me to call the police?
[10:06] Speaker 4: Especially? I just admiring your pictures? So yeah, you have
[10:11] Speaker 4: exceptional handwriting.
[10:13] Speaker 6: You pretty nosy, aren't you.
[10:15] Speaker 4: I particularly like this sample, where it says, for Buff
[10:18] Speaker 4: darling my love Blossom.
[10:20] Speaker 6: Listen, mister, I got things to do, so run along.
[10:22] Speaker 4: How long have your known Buff? Honey?
[10:24] Speaker 8: You think I'm kidding about calling the cops? Well, I
[10:27] Speaker 8: do it all right, only only what only I'm due
[10:32] Speaker 8: downtown at work. I Oh, honest, mister, I'm not going
[10:36] Speaker 8: to talk to you anymore. You got no right to
[10:37] Speaker 8: ask me questions about anything, and nothing says I got answer.
[10:41] Speaker 4: That's right, that's right, honey. You sure don't. Now where's Buff?
[10:44] Speaker 6: I don't know.
[10:45] Speaker 4: Drive you downtown and you can tell me all about it.
[10:47] Speaker 6: Huh, you're driving me nowhere but out of my mind.
[10:50] Speaker 4: I look like a good news for you. Boy. Want
[10:52] Speaker 4: to see me?
[10:52] Speaker 6: Get out?
[10:54] Speaker 4: Okay, Blossom, okay, what time's your first show too?
[11:00] Speaker 6: How did you know?
[11:02] Speaker 4: Yeah? I read the papers, and occasionally I've been known
[11:05] Speaker 4: to contribute to the cultural progress of Los Angeles, you know,
[11:09] Speaker 4: save the burlesque houses. The pictures she'd autographed the Buff
[11:18] Speaker 4: have been propped up between my sugar bowl and the
[11:20] Speaker 4: soul Shaker the Sunday morning before in the theatrical section
[11:24] Speaker 4: of the Sunday paper. Yeah, I didn't recognize it with
[11:27] Speaker 4: a housecoat on. And all the way back downtown I
[11:30] Speaker 4: reflected on the advantages of being well read well. I
[11:37] Speaker 4: parked in a lot on a side street to the
[11:39] Speaker 4: north end of skid Row and stopped for lunch at
[11:41] Speaker 4: a newspaper man's hangout nearby. It was almost time for
[11:45] Speaker 4: Blossom's first show when I felt fortified enough to walk
[11:48] Speaker 4: along the street past the blank stairs of the Winos
[11:51] Speaker 4: and the dank air of the Muscatel Missions. Blossom's flag
[11:56] Speaker 4: flew above the Marquee Blossom hour of bro Less.
[12:04] Speaker 7: How many please?
[12:05] Speaker 4: One? Huh? There you are? Say thanks? Say anything I
[12:10] Speaker 4: can get in to see Blossom.
[12:11] Speaker 9: I don't see how you can miss with buying the
[12:13] Speaker 9: ticket and all.
[12:14] Speaker 4: No, no, no, I mean I'd like to see her
[12:15] Speaker 4: personally in a dressing room. I'd like to talk to her.
[12:18] Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure you have my permission.
[12:20] Speaker 9: Whether or not you get Blossoms is strictly between her
[12:23] Speaker 9: and her moral fiber.
[12:25] Speaker 4: You know something, and that much help.
[12:26] Speaker 6: You know something.
[12:27] Speaker 4: I don't try to be I'll miss you.
[12:37] Speaker 2: Here.
[12:37] Speaker 3: It is your very nat.
[12:40] Speaker 10: I don't love to pass among you with these boxes.
[12:42] Speaker 10: I'm bess, just a candy. Don't forget what I beg you, Yes,
[12:49] Speaker 10: thank you very much, with the practice of every box.
[12:52] Speaker 10: So that's the lushes chalking the candy with the nuts
[12:55] Speaker 10: inside our very special break and you go every practice.
[13:00] Speaker 4: It wasn't going to make a killing exactly. There weren't
[13:02] Speaker 4: more than six guys in the place. I wanted down
[13:05] Speaker 4: the side aisle to the door to one side of
[13:07] Speaker 4: the stage and push the door. I found myself in
[13:10] Speaker 4: a dark, narrow catwalk of the hallway. Show is going
[13:18] Speaker 4: to be out front.
[13:18] Speaker 11: Back you guys can't go back here.
[13:20] Speaker 4: This guy did. Where can I find blessom out front?
[13:24] Speaker 11: About ten minutes.
[13:25] Speaker 4: I'll wait for it back here. Thanks.
[13:26] Speaker 11: Look, I can make myself clear.
[13:28] Speaker 4: If I had guys push you would Your lighting system
[13:30] Speaker 4: is very bad back here.
[13:32] Speaker 11: It lights out front where it count smack.
[13:34] Speaker 4: Come on, get it, get easy, fellow, this is business.
[13:37] Speaker 4: I don't like being pushed.
[13:38] Speaker 7: That can happen.
[13:38] Speaker 4: You won't like you if you don't get out of here.
[13:41] Speaker 12: You're causing too much commotion. I'll get out.
[13:43] Speaker 4: Front with you.
[13:43] Speaker 12: Belong yeah, yea.
[13:46] Speaker 4: Look, I don't know who you are, and I can.
[13:47] Speaker 12: Clear that up for you quick. Friend, I'm the manager
[13:50] Speaker 12: of this theater, and I'll run along like he did.
[13:52] Speaker 4: Where can we talk in your office?
[13:53] Speaker 12: Why should I talk to you.
[13:54] Speaker 4: Because I'm a booking agent. I want to talk to
[13:56] Speaker 4: you about Blossom.
[13:57] Speaker 12: She's booked.
[13:58] Speaker 4: Okay, we'll talk about something else. Here's your office.
[14:02] Speaker 12: Now, Look, the show is starting. We can't stay back
[14:04] Speaker 12: here follow me.
[14:13] Speaker 4: Hey, Jerry, you sure I have a bunch of odd
[14:15] Speaker 4: lovers in the audience.
[14:16] Speaker 12: Sure, sure, it's a class show. Come on through the
[14:19] Speaker 12: story all right? Now, then you're no booking agent. So
[14:24] Speaker 12: what's on your mind?
[14:25] Speaker 4: Blossom? And what's your name?
[14:26] Speaker 12: Blue? George Blue?
[14:28] Speaker 4: Why would it mean anything to you? If I told
[14:30] Speaker 4: you that buff Ryan's aunt Julie died in Philadelphia and
[14:34] Speaker 4: left him five thousand.
[14:36] Speaker 12: Bucks, wouldn't mean a thing.
[14:40] Speaker 4: No, that's funny, because you're the first one to fit
[14:43] Speaker 4: the picture. What picture? Slightly under six feet tall, light
[14:48] Speaker 4: brown hair, straight blue eyes, about thirty five years old,
[14:54] Speaker 4: way about one?
[14:55] Speaker 12: And what are you try and approve that you can
[14:57] Speaker 12: see me?
[14:58] Speaker 4: Maybe? So my Philadelphia message doesn't interest you.
[15:02] Speaker 12: Nothing about you interest me except how you got in
[15:04] Speaker 12: here in the first place.
[15:05] Speaker 4: Bought a ticket.
[15:06] Speaker 12: Then go on out and see the show.
[15:07] Speaker 4: I think I will. I also think I'll stick around
[15:11] Speaker 4: and see Blossom after her performance.
[15:14] Speaker 12: I wouldn't do that. I were you, I'd see the
[15:16] Speaker 12: show and get out. I don't want any trouble around here.
[15:19] Speaker 4: I don't either. And if you see buff before the
[15:22] Speaker 4: show's over, tell him I'm out front, will you.
[15:24] Speaker 12: I said, I don't want any trouble.
[15:27] Speaker 4: You're in a rut. I walked down the aisle, would
[15:33] Speaker 4: look backstairs. Of course I had already charted. Blossom's costume
[15:37] Speaker 4: was less than newer than her blue hosse coat. It
[15:40] Speaker 4: was a school of thoughts surrounding me that this was
[15:42] Speaker 4: more effective. Near the door, I stopped a moment in
[15:45] Speaker 4: silent appreciation.
[15:47] Speaker 7: Don't look at her like that.
[15:50] Speaker 4: I didn't know. I want you.
[15:51] Speaker 11: Don't get any more ideas, but come back to your
[15:53] Speaker 11: dressing room.
[15:54] Speaker 4: I ain't gonna like that look. Go back to your seat.
[15:57] Speaker 4: Live it. A blue said it was okay.
[15:58] Speaker 11: You wouldn't say that he knows better?
[16:00] Speaker 4: All right, go tell him he knows better. Yeah, you
[16:05] Speaker 4: stay here is the same voice I met backstage the
[16:08] Speaker 4: first time, the same pungent odor of Muscatel, and before
[16:13] Speaker 4: he'd lunched back up the eye, I had a good
[16:14] Speaker 4: look at a twisted face and a pair of watery
[16:16] Speaker 4: blue eyes. Backstage, I waited for Blossoms act to conclude.
[16:21] Speaker 3: It did ooh, in just a moment, We'll return to
[16:37] Speaker 3: the second act of Philip Marlowe, but first love that
[16:41] Speaker 3: Monday through Friday night session of Smiles. Beulah is back
[16:45] Speaker 3: with Hattie McDaniel again starring as an overgenerous, over anxious
[16:48] Speaker 3: to be wed, overweight damsel holding forth over CBS Radio.
[16:53] Speaker 3: Starting this Monday Night, listen for Beulah and the Henderson
[16:56] Speaker 3: Family in a new season of delightful day to day Doings.
[17:00] Speaker 3: Joins the fall parade of stars back to CBS Radio
[17:02] Speaker 3: on most of these stations beginning Monday Night Now with
[17:07] Speaker 3: our star Gerald Moore, the second act of Philip Marlowe
[17:11] Speaker 3: and Tonight's story There for g straight.
[17:23] Speaker 4: I couldn't have been out long about eight bars of
[17:26] Speaker 4: imagination unless I'd missed a full chorus. At some point,
[17:30] Speaker 4: I was fuzzily aware of being carried sax style somewhere,
[17:34] Speaker 4: then being dropped not too gently onto what set of
[17:36] Speaker 4: the noisiest springs i'd ever heard this. Music lowed me
[17:40] Speaker 4: for a while, and then I heard a door slam
[17:43] Speaker 4: and my head rolled off on the floor and broke.
[17:48] Speaker 6: Come on, Marlow, you're not dead?
[17:50] Speaker 4: Is that official?
[17:51] Speaker 6: How'd you get in here anyway?
[17:53] Speaker 4: You wouldn't believe me if I told you. I hardly
[17:56] Speaker 4: believe it myself.
[17:57] Speaker 6: You're not supposed to be here.
[17:58] Speaker 4: I know, I know, I know. I had that pointed
[18:01] Speaker 4: out to me several times. Now. Yeah, and I didn't
[18:05] Speaker 4: think I told you my.
[18:06] Speaker 6: Name You're while it was on the floor, I can read.
[18:09] Speaker 4: Oh, well, good for you? Who hit me? And with
[18:13] Speaker 4: what size sandbag?
[18:15] Speaker 6: I don't know?
[18:15] Speaker 4: You never know anything? Do you listen?
[18:17] Speaker 6: Mister Marla? You've been barging in all day where you're
[18:19] Speaker 6: not wanted.
[18:19] Speaker 4: Why didn't you tell me Buff was a wine out? Hey?
[18:23] Speaker 4: Look look that's what's left of my head. Huh.
[18:26] Speaker 6: I hope it hurt. I hope it hurt awful?
[18:29] Speaker 4: You get your hope it did?
[18:31] Speaker 12: I listen? You want? Pretty fed up with you?
[18:33] Speaker 4: I'll just how you feel below. You know what you
[18:36] Speaker 4: told me. You don't want to any trouble. Okay, okay,
[18:40] Speaker 4: I'm going a blessing. What about Buff?
[18:44] Speaker 6: I don't know.
[18:45] Speaker 9: Never mind, now, don't tell me you want I'm a
[19:00] Speaker 9: mother ticket.
[19:00] Speaker 4: I'd make kid, I've taken the cure.
[19:02] Speaker 12: How is there moral fiber like.
[19:04] Speaker 4: You brought her? You know a guy named buff Ryan
[19:08] Speaker 4: for free?
[19:08] Speaker 6: I don't know my own mother?
[19:11] Speaker 4: You do? See your point? Yeah? Here's mine memory getting
[19:18] Speaker 4: any better?
[19:19] Speaker 6: It's clearing up.
[19:21] Speaker 7: A little.
[19:22] Speaker 12: Well.
[19:23] Speaker 9: When he ain't here, which he ain't right now, he's
[19:26] Speaker 9: usually mother Morris's.
[19:28] Speaker 4: That's for one, Mother Morris's h flappas.
[19:31] Speaker 9: Three doors down, or for two, try Tilly's four doors
[19:34] Speaker 9: down a saloon.
[19:36] Speaker 4: Thank you. Mother Morris couldn't help me, lovable old lush
[19:47] Speaker 4: that she was, And a penetrating search of the twenty
[19:50] Speaker 4: five cent bed she sow revealed a lot of things,
[19:53] Speaker 4: but no Buff Ryan. Tilly's downstairs next door didn't look
[19:57] Speaker 4: very promising at first, but that was before I saw
[20:00] Speaker 4: the twisted face with the watery blue eyes at the
[20:02] Speaker 4: far end of the bar. Beside him, the unofficial Dean
[20:05] Speaker 4: and Philosopher of skid Row, Jay Fenton Predis. I started
[20:11] Speaker 4: talling them, but a cordon of winos surrounded me before
[20:14] Speaker 4: I can reach him. That that's yeah, Prentice, I'm the
[20:18] Speaker 4: one you call the brothers here off, Make him breathe
[20:21] Speaker 4: in another direction and let me talk to Buff.
[20:23] Speaker 13: We're a close association here, mister Mano. Outsiders are not
[20:29] Speaker 13: tell Oh come on, pradis you know me well enough? Perhaps,
[20:32] Speaker 13: mister Mallow, But we know each other better my associates
[20:37] Speaker 13: and I. My young friend Buff here quite obviously does
[20:42] Speaker 13: not twish to talk with you. We are merely respecting
[20:46] Speaker 13: his wishes in our own way.
[20:49] Speaker 4: Come on, look, this is cock eye. Maybe this isn't
[20:51] Speaker 4: the place to say it, but you have inherited money, Buff.
[20:54] Speaker 4: That's all I came to tell.
[20:55] Speaker 7: You who died?
[20:58] Speaker 4: All right, Julie, I say anymore, Prentise, don't let him
[21:01] Speaker 4: get to me.
[21:02] Speaker 7: I gotta get out of here.
[21:03] Speaker 13: If you gentlemen will restrain mister Manloyeah, crazy fool.
[21:08] Speaker 4: Lessen to me. That's a lawyer here pulling helve to
[21:10] Speaker 4: see it. He's at the broad view.
[21:12] Speaker 1: Will him?
[21:12] Speaker 4: I haven't sake it in touch with a lesson to me.
[21:17] Speaker 7: WI.
[21:18] Speaker 4: The lawyer's name is Martin Norman.
[21:19] Speaker 12: Idiot co say him?
[21:21] Speaker 4: They stupid dults, Thanks, Pranise. Nothing. Buff was nowhere to
[21:32] Speaker 4: be seen when I hit the street. Didn't matter it
[21:34] Speaker 4: was three o'clock. I delivered my message from Martin Norman.
[21:37] Speaker 4: Buff could take it from there. No, I may be wrong,
[21:41] Speaker 4: but most guys liked when Herod Doe said, you can
[21:44] Speaker 4: never tell with a whineo, and Buff was, as they say,
[21:47] Speaker 4: bona fide. Martin Alman was glad to see me. That
[21:51] Speaker 4: was a nice change of pace. I told him all
[21:54] Speaker 4: I knew. Didn't take long.
[21:56] Speaker 5: I'm afraid you've had quite a bad experience, mister Marlowe.
[21:58] Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Oh, by the way, this picture
[22:02] Speaker 5: arrives special delivery from Philadelphia about an hour ago. Oh
[22:05] Speaker 5: is this the reluctant chap you tracked down?
[22:08] Speaker 4: Let me see that? Oh yeah, yeah, that's Buff before Muscatel.
[22:12] Speaker 5: Well you've done a fine job, mister morlow I made
[22:15] Speaker 5: your checkout for you.
[22:16] Speaker 4: Thanks.
[22:17] Speaker 5: So he's going to try to get in touch with
[22:19] Speaker 5: Buff yourself, perhaps not personally, of course. You're certain that
[22:23] Speaker 5: wearing street addressed the little house in back should reach him.
[22:26] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, or I suppose you could get in touch
[22:28] Speaker 4: with him through Blossom at the Burles Theater.
[22:31] Speaker 5: Well, we've done all we can for now. Unfortunately, I've
[22:33] Speaker 5: been called back to Philadelphia. I'm taking your plane out
[22:35] Speaker 5: in an hour.
[22:36] Speaker 4: What about Buff and the inheritance?
[22:37] Speaker 5: Well, now that I know he can be rich, we'll
[22:39] Speaker 5: mail it to him. After all, we can't force it,
[22:43] Speaker 5: how can we, mister marlow.
[22:44] Speaker 4: Oh doesn't look like we can. Yeah, well he's are yours,
[22:49] Speaker 4: mister Olman?
[22:54] Speaker 12: What?
[22:54] Speaker 4: Norman seems satisfied that we've done our job. So I
[22:58] Speaker 4: left wishing someone would come up to me and tell
[22:59] Speaker 4: me what's the name? Had left me five thousand climes.
[23:03] Speaker 4: When I got back to my car, I had it
[23:05] Speaker 4: all figured how I'd go home and forget what Martin
[23:07] Speaker 4: had called quite a bad experience. One look inside my
[23:11] Speaker 4: car told me it wasn't gonna work out that way
[23:13] Speaker 4: at all.
[23:15] Speaker 7: You weren't as long as I thought you'd be, mister Marlowe, and.
[23:19] Speaker 4: You get him from skid Row Prentice fly I always taxi.
[23:23] Speaker 4: How nice for you?
[23:25] Speaker 7: After you left Tilley's.
[23:26] Speaker 13: I fell to thinking, mister Marlowe, quite afore it occurred
[23:30] Speaker 13: to me.
[23:31] Speaker 7: That perhaps you were telling Buff the truth all the time.
[23:35] Speaker 4: I was It's not important now, isn't.
[23:38] Speaker 7: Oh? Yes, I should say it's quite important.
[23:42] Speaker 13: Really, you mustn't be too hard on Buff, mister Marlowe,
[23:46] Speaker 13: He's like most men on the row. He probably has
[23:49] Speaker 13: his reasons for running, running from life, perhaps running from
[23:55] Speaker 13: himself or others.
[23:58] Speaker 4: Are you trying to tell me something now.
[24:01] Speaker 13: That would be presumptuous of me, mister Marlowe, temper justice
[24:05] Speaker 13: with mercy, that much I say to you, I tell
[24:10] Speaker 13: you Buff Ryan is running and with reason. If his
[24:15] Speaker 13: reason interests you, then I suggest you set about finding out.
[24:20] Speaker 7: What it is.
[24:22] Speaker 4: Was there any reason why I should know?
[24:24] Speaker 7: No, there isn't. But as much I do know, he
[24:29] Speaker 7: has left the role and he is running.
[24:42] Speaker 4: I saved Jay Frent and Pratiss's taxifair back to what
[24:45] Speaker 4: he affectionately referred to was the role. He wouldn't have
[24:49] Speaker 4: followed me if he hadn't wanted me to know something
[24:51] Speaker 4: peculiar about Buff And yet his odd code kept him
[24:55] Speaker 4: from telling me himself. And I knew that code well
[24:59] Speaker 4: enough to know it had something to do with the police. Yeah. Well,
[25:03] Speaker 4: like I say, I'm a curious fellow.
[25:05] Speaker 5: Oh no, Phil, Is this a big time or small
[25:08] Speaker 5: time crooked?
[25:09] Speaker 4: This Ryan? He's pretty small Sergeant money if he is one,
[25:13] Speaker 4: el No, not that I know of.
[25:15] Speaker 5: Well, we'll try Ryan just for size. Buff's a crazy name.
[25:20] Speaker 4: He's a crazy guy.
[25:22] Speaker 7: You'll have to look for it, and Monica file here,
[25:26] Speaker 7: hold it, here.
[25:29] Speaker 5: Is your guy.
[25:31] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. Let's see that
[25:33] Speaker 4: when take it out of there. I've seen that much
[25:36] Speaker 4: of a reckon suspect robbery charges dropped suspect extortion charges.
[25:41] Speaker 4: Trying wonder why they bothered to take his picture. I
[25:43] Speaker 4: don't know, buff Raglan Bob Rutler, A Doug A Douglas. Hello,
[25:52] Speaker 4: takes care of one question? Mine?
[25:53] Speaker 3: Does it?
[25:54] Speaker 4: Yeah? Take my word for a kid, it does. Let's
[25:57] Speaker 4: see last question in connection with this Julie Leader Philadelphia.
[26:02] Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Aunt Julie, Holy smoke. I knew I
[26:13] Speaker 4: didn't like this Martin Almond. I didn't bother to check
[26:16] Speaker 4: his record. I got the picture, No wonder. Buff ran
[26:19] Speaker 4: for me like the plague. Martin had sucked me into
[26:22] Speaker 4: setting Buff up for the kill Marlow the finger man.
[26:25] Speaker 4: That's great. Now. I got back to the theater and
[26:27] Speaker 4: practically nothing flat yank Blossom practically off stage, shoved her
[26:31] Speaker 4: into my car and roll like mad at the Little
[26:34] Speaker 4: Gray House. Behind the Little Gray House, Fredis said, Buffett
[26:37] Speaker 4: left skid roll if he was not on Wearing street.
[26:40] Speaker 4: He might be anywhere, including dead. Martin was paying off
[26:44] Speaker 4: a cab driver in front of the house. Blossom cued
[26:46] Speaker 4: me to the alley entrance and back.
[26:50] Speaker 6: Please don't let anything happen to him.
[26:52] Speaker 4: Oh cry now, honey, we'll make it in time to
[26:54] Speaker 4: just let us say.
[26:54] Speaker 6: He's got to mister Marlow. He's my husband.
[26:56] Speaker 4: Okay, okay, take it easy, baby, stand away. I'm a
[27:00] Speaker 4: blastemer kid. You listen, Buff Martin's coming in the front.
[27:03] Speaker 4: You can't waste time with that.
[27:03] Speaker 11: I don't believe you allow you're part of the dealer.
[27:07] Speaker 7: Hey, what is this?
[27:07] Speaker 4: You should have listened to me. I'm sorry, Blossom, my
[27:11] Speaker 4: head to He's all right, he's just out a listen,
[27:14] Speaker 4: you've got to answer that front door. Answer it. I'll
[27:16] Speaker 4: be right behind the door. He won't do anything to you.
[27:19] Speaker 4: Just let come in.
[27:19] Speaker 13: But I'm afraid.
[27:20] Speaker 5: Oh come on, Oh how do you do I I
[27:29] Speaker 5: was looking for a gentleman by the name of Buff Ryan.
[27:32] Speaker 5: I'm an old friend of his. I understood he lived here.
[27:36] Speaker 6: Yes, yes he does.
[27:39] Speaker 5: Is he at home?
[27:39] Speaker 6: Now?
[27:41] Speaker 7: Yes?
[27:41] Speaker 6: Won't you come in?
[27:43] Speaker 5: Thank you?
[27:50] Speaker 4: Thank me? I got his gun?
[27:52] Speaker 6: Are you all right?
[27:53] Speaker 4: Never felt better go throw some water on your boy
[27:55] Speaker 4: and get him in here. Maybe he'll talk now, maybe
[27:59] Speaker 4: I will.
[28:00] Speaker 6: No, Buff, Darling, you're not hurt anymore.
[28:03] Speaker 4: Honey, I don't figure you.
[28:05] Speaker 11: I guess, Marlow.
[28:07] Speaker 4: I thought you were on Martin's team. I was at
[28:09] Speaker 4: first when I thought the business about you inheriting the
[28:12] Speaker 4: five thousand bucks was legitimate. What's he got against you?
[28:16] Speaker 11: I saw too much once about a year ago. So
[28:20] Speaker 11: Martin killed Julie Leader. I was the only one who
[28:23] Speaker 11: saw it. I knew he'd give me the same thing
[28:25] Speaker 11: if you ever got the chance. He can't do that now, Kenny.
[28:30] Speaker 4: Not if you'll talk when we get the law here.
[28:32] Speaker 6: Buff, why didn't you tell me?
[28:34] Speaker 4: Silly question?
[28:35] Speaker 5: Honey, Sure, Marlow, call the law.
[28:40] Speaker 11: It'll be almost a pleasure to talk.
[28:52] Speaker 4: So much for that. Buff and Blossom are doing fine.
[28:57] Speaker 4: Every once in a while we sit in the third
[29:00] Speaker 4: and yelled down in front. Yeah. He's got a good
[29:03] Speaker 4: job now, and soon they'll have enough for the traditional
[29:06] Speaker 4: vine covered respectability. Oh, by the way, he's taken a
[29:11] Speaker 4: wearing Brooks Brothers type suits. You know what, he looks
[29:16] Speaker 4: just like a Philadelphia lawyer. How do you like that?

[32:58] Speaker 2: require more documentation than just us says so. But at
[33:03] Speaker 2: any rate, I will say that I also did like
[33:07] Speaker 2: the Philosopher of skid Row. Well, that pretty interesting, fuch.
