[1:40] Speaker 2: Case Broadways My Beat from Times Square to Columbus Circle.
[1:59] Speaker 2: The gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest, mile in the world.
[2:08] Speaker 3: Broadway is my beat with Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover.
[2:24] Speaker 2: When it's October and the night has slipped down over Broadway,
[2:27] Speaker 2: the street has spangled with autumn strollers. They come here,
[2:30] Speaker 2: the seekers after something or other. Pick a doorway with
[2:33] Speaker 2: promising neon, Pick a smile and run after it. Pick
[2:36] Speaker 2: a postcard right home about it. It's the place to be.
[2:40] Speaker 2: You've got to leave your mark. Buy a turtle and
[2:42] Speaker 2: have your name painted on its back. Buy a necktie,
[2:45] Speaker 2: buy a pillow and send it back to mom. Sometimes
[2:48] Speaker 2: you'll be lucky and get lipstick on your handkerchief. But
[2:51] Speaker 2: the odds say you'll buy a newspaper and go to bed.
[2:54] Speaker 2: But it's Broadway, kid, and you've had it. Where Broadway
[3:03] Speaker 2: epps off into the side streets downtown Where I was
[3:06] Speaker 2: close to, where I was close to where Eighteenth Street
[3:08] Speaker 2: touches the river. The shock was a thing composed of
[3:10] Speaker 2: crowd and a nighttime sky lit by flame, the elements
[3:14] Speaker 2: later to be noted in police and Fire Department records.
[3:16] Speaker 2: Fire at Russell's Chemical Company, time four fifteen am.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Bringing somebody out now down strange?
[3:23] Speaker 5: What what'd you say?
[3:24] Speaker 2: Said? It? Strange Mugavin after four in the morning. Why
[3:27] Speaker 2: should anybody be come? Let's see put the stretches down here,
[3:33] Speaker 2: somebody better, how are they?
[3:34] Speaker 6: Oh?
[3:34] Speaker 2: Hello, Denny, he's too. I think that's all it's in there.
[3:37] Speaker 7: I just started to say, somebody better get a priest.
[3:39] Speaker 2: They both said, this one is the other one.
[3:42] Speaker 8: Anny look at him, Ed Coster, do something for him,
[3:46] Speaker 8: don't dock. Doc overhead, ed Coster, hurry up, Doc, you
[3:51] Speaker 8: know what Danny, Yeah, he's a policeman.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Policeman. What was he doing in there? Doc?
[3:56] Speaker 4: Do something for him.
[4:01] Speaker 2: The flames beating against the night sky, burning and opening
[4:04] Speaker 2: for dawn in the street, the reflected glow darts across
[4:07] Speaker 2: the face of death, holds for an instant, and scurries
[4:09] Speaker 2: at the breath of the October wind. This is the
[4:12] Speaker 2: time of shadows, the brief time, the time for shrouding
[4:15] Speaker 2: of the charred body of a man, the time for
[4:18] Speaker 2: quick gentleness the other man still in anguish, and the
[4:23] Speaker 2: lifting of the men of the vehicle reserved for the
[4:24] Speaker 2: dead and the dying, the closing of a door upon them,
[4:28] Speaker 2: the hushed ride that puts an end. Tonight in the
[4:41] Speaker 2: morning at headquarters, watch the sergeant lift a foam, dial
[4:44] Speaker 2: the number and, after a silence, ask for news of
[4:47] Speaker 2: a man who was known to him, who was a friend.
[4:51] Speaker 9: It's me again, doctor Sinski. About read cost any change any.
[4:57] Speaker 10: No?
[4:59] Speaker 9: I thank you. I'll keep calling. You know, what do
[5:04] Speaker 9: you want?
[5:05] Speaker 2: How is he?
[5:06] Speaker 7: You heard?
[5:07] Speaker 9: No change?
[5:08] Speaker 2: Hits us all you know? Costs? That kind of man ed.
[5:11] Speaker 9: Spin to the house, dangled the Tartaglia child on his knee.
[5:17] Speaker 9: He don't make it, that'll make it. Sorry, Denny, I
[5:24] Speaker 9: keep thinking about it's wife, Vera. I keep thinking something
[5:27] Speaker 9: for me, you know, yeah, yeah, I got some. I'm sorry, Denny.
[5:34] Speaker 9: The man found with that the dead man. Technical check
[5:37] Speaker 9: up on him in ways, they got to check on
[5:39] Speaker 9: such things. Fingerprints made. We got a file on him
[5:43] Speaker 9: this long to my arm. Joe Gant professional arsonist, a
[5:47] Speaker 9: man who sets fires this way. He makes his daily
[5:51] Speaker 9: bread by.
[5:51] Speaker 2: Burning anything else.
[5:53] Speaker 9: It's on the record. Grant was friends the Frankie Crown.
[5:56] Speaker 2: Oh how were they friends?
[5:58] Speaker 9: Gant once a little playful, little bonfire in a machine shop.
[6:01] Speaker 9: Concerned Frankie Crown bailed him out, treated him to Frankie's lawyer.
[6:05] Speaker 9: Can't got off. Let's see Frankie get out of this one.
[6:09] Speaker 2: I hear Frankie's a big man, now, not that big.
[6:13] Speaker 2: I want to talk to him.
[6:15] Speaker 9: Yeah, but maybe you better listen to this other thing first, Anny,
[6:19] Speaker 9: what was called? In a few minutes ago? The automobile
[6:22] Speaker 9: of one George Russell exploded blew up in the face
[6:25] Speaker 9: of his daughter Patrice in the driveway with a booby trap.
[6:27] Speaker 9: Russell of the Russell Chemical Company where the fire was
[6:31] Speaker 9: home address Uptown, nineteen twenty three East one hundred and twelve.
[6:35] Speaker 2: Thanks, you know, doctor.
[6:41] Speaker 9: Sinski me again about that? Any change any No, I'll call.
[6:49] Speaker 11: Again in a little while.
[7:00] Speaker 2: M Yeah, mister Russell.
[7:11] Speaker 4: Yes, what is it?
[7:12] Speaker 2: My name's Clover, police all morning?
[7:15] Speaker 4: Long?
[7:16] Speaker 2: Mind? Have I come in?
[7:17] Speaker 4: I suppose you may in here? This is my daughter
[7:24] Speaker 4: Trees Clover another policeman.
[7:27] Speaker 12: Hi.
[7:27] Speaker 2: How do you feel, miss Russell?
[7:29] Speaker 6: Got my pinching hand in a cast?
[7:32] Speaker 4: Oh?
[7:32] Speaker 6: The disadvantage of it all.
[7:35] Speaker 11: Wait, Jimmy Seyes.
[7:36] Speaker 12: It it was your fault, daddy, wasn't it his fault?
[7:40] Speaker 6: Mister Clark?
[7:41] Speaker 2: I understand your car blew up this morning, not mine.
[7:45] Speaker 2: What happened.
[7:46] Speaker 4: Her car is in the garage being repaired. I loaned
[7:49] Speaker 4: him mine.
[7:49] Speaker 6: You see how it's his fault. Mister Clover, he spoils me.
[7:53] Speaker 6: I only wheedled him for the car this much, this much,
[7:57] Speaker 6: and he patted me and said.
[7:58] Speaker 2: Yes, my darling daughter stepped on the starter and it.
[8:01] Speaker 6: Blew the way things do, bang like that, bang.
[8:05] Speaker 4: She's a lucky girl.
[8:07] Speaker 6: Fortunately, hand in a sling goes on my cheek and
[8:11] Speaker 6: plaster dappled with it.
[8:14] Speaker 2: For Jimmy, your car booby trapped. Mister Russell, your plants
[8:17] Speaker 2: set fire to by an arsenist and aist. That's right.
[8:21] Speaker 2: The man who died had a record of arsenal.
[8:23] Speaker 4: What's happening? I don't understand?
[8:28] Speaker 11: Hey, Pop, how's business?
[8:30] Speaker 13: Pop?
[8:30] Speaker 4: Patrice? You'd better do what?
[8:32] Speaker 7: Pop?
[8:34] Speaker 4: My business is fine. Mister clothes, you've got any idea
[8:38] Speaker 4: I had?
[8:38] Speaker 6: My There is a lot of insurance.
[8:41] Speaker 4: Cut it out.
[8:42] Speaker 14: Look, mister cloth, what don't pay any attention to? I
[8:46] Speaker 14: know you police have to think along certain lines. If
[8:49] Speaker 14: it was arson, what happened to my plant? You got
[8:53] Speaker 14: to think maybe I was the cause of it.
[8:55] Speaker 4: Look for reasons?
[8:57] Speaker 14: Well, I netted seventy thousand last year and this year
[9:01] Speaker 14: it's better than ever.
[9:02] Speaker 6: To kind of praise.
[9:04] Speaker 4: What am I going to do with you, Patrice, I'm
[9:06] Speaker 4: a mess.
[9:07] Speaker 2: Mister Russell, or some connection between the arsonist who's found
[9:11] Speaker 2: and a hoodlum named Frankie Crown. Do you know Frankie?
[9:14] Speaker 4: Frankie Crown a hoodlum? Why should I look? Mister, I
[9:20] Speaker 4: didn't ask you into my house, so listen, just asked.
[9:23] Speaker 11: That's all he did.
[9:24] Speaker 4: Pap, I don't know him, never heard of him.
[9:28] Speaker 2: All right, it's.
[9:30] Speaker 6: Fun a mister Klovik hoodlum's arson booby traps the nice
[9:35] Speaker 6: things that can happen to a modern miss.
[9:39] Speaker 11: Brother, little Jimmy hears.
[9:40] Speaker 6: Tonight's the night he won't be able to shut me up.
[9:46] Speaker 2: And consider the girl for a moment, consider the delight
[9:49] Speaker 2: she had found in a touch of horror upon her,
[9:52] Speaker 2: Then the intrusion of her father's face, stricken with a
[9:54] Speaker 2: sudden fleeting understanding of the girl, then turning to you,
[9:58] Speaker 2: trying to smile, trying to erase the impression his child
[10:01] Speaker 2: is made.
[10:01] Speaker 4: She's suffering a shock. She doesn't understand, mister, she doesn't know.
[10:06] Speaker 2: And the girl looks up, laughs at them and leave
[10:10] Speaker 2: them like that. Then to the discrete office of Frankie
[10:18] Speaker 2: Crown in a discreete downtown building dedicated to the deep
[10:22] Speaker 2: understanding of stocks and bonds and the affairs of commerce.
[10:25] Speaker 2: The shiny new setting for Frankie Crown Hoodland Alley, boy
[10:30] Speaker 2: friend of dead Arsonists, and Frankie holds out a discreetly
[10:34] Speaker 2: manicured hand to have it shaken. Only it doesn't happen
[10:36] Speaker 2: to him.
[10:37] Speaker 7: Mm hmm.
[10:39] Speaker 5: It's your own way, Denny. I thought it would spark
[10:42] Speaker 5: something between us.
[10:43] Speaker 2: If you show you're a long way from home, Frankie blessed.
[10:47] Speaker 15: That's me, have been blessed. Wipe your hands of the
[10:50] Speaker 15: old life and a new world shivers on horizon waiting
[10:53] Speaker 15: just for you. I got a child then, been any
[10:57] Speaker 15: good fires lately, Frankie now busy busy. Frankie Crown has
[11:01] Speaker 15: been so busy you couldn't conceive. No fires, no street dancers,
[11:05] Speaker 15: no fun anywhere. The penalties are the new life.
[11:09] Speaker 2: Friend of yours was at a fire a loan.
[11:12] Speaker 15: I got crazy friends. They flip over the craziest things.
[11:15] Speaker 2: Joe Gan Darsonist, friend of yours. Frankie.
[11:18] Speaker 15: Somewhere in the back of my brain the name Gant
[11:21] Speaker 15: shivers help me.
[11:22] Speaker 2: Then the consensus is he set a fire early yesterday
[11:25] Speaker 2: morning at the Russell Chemical Company. He died in it.
[11:30] Speaker 2: You bailed them out once, favored them with your private lawyer,
[11:32] Speaker 2: got him off Joe again.
[11:36] Speaker 5: I did all that.
[11:37] Speaker 2: We got a memory course at headquarters. Frankie, you just
[11:39] Speaker 2: signed up.
[11:40] Speaker 15: I'll get it hard, Denny and such I always said
[11:44] Speaker 15: about my mother. Touch of your hand brought it back.
[11:50] Speaker 15: Can some ways got him mother. I know because she
[11:55] Speaker 15: came to me that time crying in my sleeve. Please
[11:58] Speaker 15: help Joe.
[11:59] Speaker 2: He's good.
[12:00] Speaker 5: Boys made my eyes water.
[12:03] Speaker 15: How with my dough and lawyer, Joe gand was going
[12:06] Speaker 15: to reform.
[12:06] Speaker 7: So I gave it.
[12:08] Speaker 2: I break up at her mother's tears. I be sure
[12:10] Speaker 2: to cry something for me.
[12:12] Speaker 15: You're gonna looking for I don't buy that, Danny. I
[12:15] Speaker 15: bought her a place in her old country. She impressed
[12:18] Speaker 15: me so much. As a typical money.
[12:21] Speaker 2: You close all the doors behind you, don't.
[12:23] Speaker 4: You, Frankie.
[12:24] Speaker 5: The mark of a polite man.
[12:25] Speaker 2: Because how about the one on George Russell.
[12:29] Speaker 15: It come over the tape. The Russell plant bourned to
[12:31] Speaker 15: the ground this morning. His car blew up in his
[12:34] Speaker 15: daughter's lap. Oh desert door, it's never been opened to me.
[12:37] Speaker 2: D in a Russell do.
[12:39] Speaker 15: I'm blessed, absolutely blessed.
[12:46] Speaker 2: You get out of there and back to headquarters. Sit
[12:48] Speaker 2: at your desk and shuffle your thoughts. The coincidence of
[12:51] Speaker 2: a booby trapped car and a fire, A link between
[12:54] Speaker 2: a hoodlum newly respectable and an arsonist newly dead, and
[12:59] Speaker 2: another man a busines this man who had a daughter.
[13:01] Speaker 2: Try to find a category for her. Try to find
[13:06] Speaker 2: Danny Clover, doctor. Since Kim calling from the hospital, how's
[13:09] Speaker 2: ed cost her?
[13:10] Speaker 4: Get down here, Danny right away.
[13:14] Speaker 2: You can go there and the only sound in the
[13:16] Speaker 2: corridor is your footsteps, the sound that hurries toward pain.
[13:21] Speaker 2: Open the door and find it. Doctor. He's dead. Danny there,
[13:37] Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
[13:39] Speaker 6: M h m hm.
[13:43] Speaker 10: Oh.
[14:00] Speaker 3: You are listening to Broadway's My Beat, written by Morton
[14:03] Speaker 3: Fine and David Friedkin and starring Larry Thor as Detective
[14:07] Speaker 3: Danny Clover. In Days of Old, when nights were bold,
[14:11] Speaker 3: King Arthur and his Roundtable were the rage. History's not
[14:14] Speaker 3: exactly repeating itself, but the best entertainment of Arthur Godfrey's
[14:17] Speaker 3: weekday shows is every Sunday afternoon on King Arthur Godfrey's Roundtable.
[14:22] Speaker 3: Listen for it starting tomorrow afternoon on most of these
[14:25] Speaker 3: same stations. King Arthur Godfrey's Roundtable on CBS Radio.
[14:40] Speaker 2: The October wind shrills through broadways corridors, sets in motion,
[14:44] Speaker 2: the light bulbs dangling from twisted, frayed cords, rates the
[14:48] Speaker 2: new autumn soot against guarred window panes, and broadway walks
[14:52] Speaker 2: faster now, the wind that slept in the summer warmed
[14:54] Speaker 2: rivers awake now and sirens, the coming of the cold days,
[14:58] Speaker 2: the gray days, the day's sodden Autumn's mists. And the
[15:02] Speaker 2: corridor people. The doorway people try to hold back, clutch
[15:05] Speaker 2: once more at the sunlit visions that never happened, but
[15:09] Speaker 2: the October wind shrieks it out of their hands, pushes
[15:11] Speaker 2: it into a corner with the rest of the debris.
[15:14] Speaker 2: That's how autumn happens. To a Broadway kid, go fight it.
[15:25] Speaker 2: And Autumn has other sounds, the lingering overtones that float
[15:29] Speaker 2: in from a hospital corridor. The woman's called a dead husband, and.
[15:34] Speaker 13: And virah vira, let me give you something.
[15:41] Speaker 5: Let me get don't talk to me.
[15:45] Speaker 11: Just for a minute.
[15:46] Speaker 5: Don't talk to me, Vera.
[15:57] Speaker 11: It's all right now, Daddy, nothing, there's no more crying
[16:04] Speaker 11: left in me.
[16:05] Speaker 13: I'll get you something, vera, something it says in the
[16:08] Speaker 13: bottle that makes you feel better.
[16:10] Speaker 11: I told you, doctor, there's nothing I want, nothing I
[16:14] Speaker 11: need from anyone.
[16:17] Speaker 2: Ed was a fine man. Vera week.
[16:19] Speaker 11: You'll miss him, You, Danny, you, doctor Sinsk, all of you.
[16:26] Speaker 11: They say death comes. When they say bitterness won't help,
[16:32] Speaker 11: they're dead wrong. It helps.
[16:35] Speaker 2: I'll take you home via Then some other time we'll
[16:39] Speaker 2: talk about Ed.
[16:41] Speaker 11: Yes, what's wrong with now? Danny? You can talk to
[16:46] Speaker 11: me about Ed now. We never held secrets from each other.
[16:49] Speaker 2: I couldn't understand something.
[16:51] Speaker 11: What was there about Ed cost You couldn't understand.
[16:54] Speaker 2: Only how he happened to be at the scene of
[16:56] Speaker 2: the fire. How he must have been there even before
[16:59] Speaker 2: he was.
[17:00] Speaker 11: An anonymous call. It told him a fire was being
[17:04] Speaker 11: set at that chemical company. It even told him what time.
[17:07] Speaker 4: To get there.
[17:07] Speaker 2: Did he have the call traced?
[17:08] Speaker 11: It came from a public phone booth.
[17:10] Speaker 2: Ed was new on the burglary squad.
[17:12] Speaker 11: He was glad for the tip. He thought it would
[17:15] Speaker 11: make for a good start on the burglary detail.
[17:17] Speaker 2: He thought it a narcotic squad before that put in
[17:20] Speaker 2: for a transfer.
[17:22] Speaker 12: Do you know why because I asked him to, because
[17:26] Speaker 12: I didn't like the idea of his being in a
[17:28] Speaker 12: narcotic squad.
[17:31] Speaker 11: It didn't fit in. Ed was fine, a good man.
[17:38] Speaker 11: He gave me all his love. Oh it's.
[17:48] Speaker 2: And listen to her until the time comes when their
[17:50] Speaker 2: only answer is silence, And not silence quite because the
[17:54] Speaker 2: screaming questions intrude themselves. What is the word to give
[17:58] Speaker 2: to a woman whose husband is dead? How do you
[18:01] Speaker 2: fill in reports? How do you make a statistic out
[18:03] Speaker 2: of it and find it in a ledger? How do
[18:06] Speaker 2: you write heartbreak as a number? You don't know how?
[18:11] Speaker 2: See you turn your back on it, Leave and to
[18:21] Speaker 2: headquarters again. Call in Detective Mugglevan, Tell them to get
[18:23] Speaker 2: out the record of Ed Coster and wait. A while later,
[18:27] Speaker 2: the door opens and Detective Mugglevan walks in. I got it, Danny, Okay,
[18:31] Speaker 2: put it down. Aren't you going to look at it?
[18:36] Speaker 2: It does a matter, Muggovin, you're restless. I'll look at it.
[18:38] Speaker 4: I know you will, but I think you'll look at
[18:39] Speaker 4: it right away.
[18:40] Speaker 2: Look Muggovin, all right, then.
[18:41] Speaker 5: I'll show you.
[18:45] Speaker 4: Hey, sid there this arrest June twelfth.
[18:49] Speaker 2: This year Paterce Russell.
[18:50] Speaker 13: Uh huh had arrested her for the possession of narcotics.
[18:54] Speaker 13: Now you know why I wanted you to take it. Muggerman
[18:57] Speaker 13: Denny Clover's office. Muggelan speak what bad?
[19:03] Speaker 7: Oh?
[19:04] Speaker 2: Sure?
[19:04] Speaker 4: Sure right away, Danny.
[19:05] Speaker 2: Huh.
[19:06] Speaker 13: A bomb was thrown ato the home at George Russell
[19:08] Speaker 13: when a few minutes to go into the living room.
[19:10] Speaker 2: Let's go.
[19:28] Speaker 13: No one else in the house, Danny, I check with
[19:31] Speaker 13: the boys in the fire department.
[19:32] Speaker 2: You looked yourself, yeah, Danny, I did. There's no one
[19:36] Speaker 2: else in the house, just him. You and me. Ask
[19:41] Speaker 2: about his daughter.
[19:42] Speaker 13: Woman in the crowd outside told me she saw her
[19:44] Speaker 13: go out a couple of hours ago, described to wearing
[19:46] Speaker 13: a power.
[19:46] Speaker 4: Right up to her hat.
[19:48] Speaker 13: The woman in the crowd leans out our window and
[19:50] Speaker 13: notices things like that about her neighbor.
[19:52] Speaker 2: You make a note of what the girl was wearing.
[19:53] Speaker 2: It happens to me like a reflex. They tried to
[19:56] Speaker 2: kill Russell once before. This time they made it. It
[20:01] Speaker 2: can't be going to another room and talk Danny. The
[20:03] Speaker 2: way it hit him in a minute time. He must
[20:06] Speaker 2: have been sitting at this window. The force of the
[20:09] Speaker 2: explosion through him like that.
[20:14] Speaker 8: He sure wanted him dead, didn't They?
[20:21] Speaker 2: Then routine put it on the teletype for all the precincts.
[20:25] Speaker 2: Have men go to places where a girl like Patrise
[20:27] Speaker 2: Russell might be. Wait, Patrese Russell is at none of
[20:31] Speaker 2: these places. Then in all points, bullet and find Patrice
[20:35] Speaker 2: Russell and more. Routine out of your office. Down two
[20:39] Speaker 2: flights of steps, down a corridor, open a door, and
[20:41] Speaker 2: for all that effort, a man named Gordon breach.
[20:44] Speaker 7: You close the door, Lieutenant, Thank you very much. Lieutenant.
[20:49] Speaker 2: Don't you ever open a window in here, Gordon.
[20:52] Speaker 7: For fresh air? You need fresher air, lieutenant, or or
[20:55] Speaker 7: you down here in technical you're hermetically sealed. Take up
[21:00] Speaker 7: with flutin emetic about the fire at the Russell Chemical Company.
[21:06] Speaker 7: I've been sitting here for two hours, watching the door,
[21:08] Speaker 7: waiting for you to scrape in here. Lutenant. You need
[21:12] Speaker 7: Gordon again. Look, Gordon, I'm a civilian technician. I don't
[21:19] Speaker 7: have to bow my head and shuffle my feet when
[21:20] Speaker 7: you talk to me. Next time you walk in here,
[21:23] Speaker 7: say to yourself, don't raise your voice to Gordon.
[21:27] Speaker 2: What about the report nicely phrased.
[21:35] Speaker 7: Here?
[21:39] Speaker 13: M hmm.
[21:40] Speaker 7: In case the three syllable type words make you scratch
[21:44] Speaker 7: your head in utter dismay. I'd better tell you the
[21:48] Speaker 7: fire was not only set by an arsonist, but there
[21:50] Speaker 7: was an explosion explosive neatly placed to explode it a
[21:53] Speaker 7: comparatively low heat it was.
[21:56] Speaker 9: I got a morsel for you.
[21:57] Speaker 2: You close the door, is it yourself? Let's get out
[22:01] Speaker 2: of here, Jane, I said, come on, Gene, what have
[22:08] Speaker 2: you got the price? Russell?
[22:10] Speaker 9: Take the fullest spotted in the village. She climbed the
[22:12] Speaker 9: stair and went to a party of twelve twelve Bank Street,
[22:14] Speaker 9: where she is at this moment.
[22:16] Speaker 2: Thanks, you know where's Patrice Russell? Thanks?
[22:46] Speaker 12: Patrice cut In, Danny cut In, come dance with me,
[22:53] Speaker 12: Come to me, Danny.
[22:55] Speaker 2: Come on, we're getting out of here.
[22:57] Speaker 6: Patrice, Honey, where we go?
[23:00] Speaker 2: Just away from here. I've got to talk to you.
[23:02] Speaker 6: My car's outside. I know a lovely.
[23:04] Speaker 2: Place to talk outside in the halls, far enough holes
[23:08] Speaker 2: are draped. Come on, or you will bruise me.
[23:13] Speaker 11: Come on, let's go out in the.
[23:14] Speaker 5: Hall here here for what?
[23:23] Speaker 2: Your father's dead, Kitty?
[23:29] Speaker 6: No, you're not, are you?
[23:32] Speaker 2: How someone tossed a bomb in your living room? Who Daddy.
[23:39] Speaker 2: Who did it, Patrice?
[23:40] Speaker 6: Honest, I don't know, poor Daddy. I loved him, you know,
[23:47] Speaker 6: I really did.
[23:48] Speaker 2: He loved you.
[23:49] Speaker 5: I know, I know he did, Patrice.
[23:53] Speaker 12: I wasn't very nice to him, Daddy. You know something,
[23:57] Speaker 12: Every morning I'd wake up and say to myself, this
[24:01] Speaker 12: is a day that I'm not going to hurt Daddy.
[24:03] Speaker 6: And it never worked out.
[24:04] Speaker 2: I want to ask you something, Patria.
[24:07] Speaker 12: I never tried around breakfast time, I'd think it's something
[24:11] Speaker 12: to do, and during the day I'd find out a
[24:13] Speaker 12: way to do it.
[24:14] Speaker 2: What about the narcotics. The narcotics, Oh.
[24:18] Speaker 11: No more, Danny.
[24:19] Speaker 12: I promised him that, and I kept my promise. I
[24:22] Speaker 12: took the cure and it worked.
[24:23] Speaker 6: I haven't touched it since, not since that detective picked
[24:27] Speaker 6: me up for it.
[24:27] Speaker 2: His name is a Consta, Patrice. He died because of
[24:30] Speaker 2: that fire at your father's place.
[24:32] Speaker 11: I'm sorry.
[24:34] Speaker 12: Listen, Danny about the narcotics. I want you to know
[24:37] Speaker 12: it's all over. It lost me everything. I had a boy,
[24:41] Speaker 12: we were going to get married, and he's gone.
[24:45] Speaker 11: You know what I do now, I go to parties.
[24:50] Speaker 2: Like this, good by Danny, and leave her and leave
[25:02] Speaker 2: Greenwich Village right uptown to the one stop you had
[25:05] Speaker 2: to make the final stop in front of a canoped
[25:08] Speaker 2: entrance to a gray stone apartment house. Have your bad
[25:11] Speaker 2: sniff damp and be told the man you're looking for
[25:13] Speaker 2: as a penthouse dweller, find the elevator, press a button,
[25:17] Speaker 2: because the man you want is thirty floors away. Get there,
[25:20] Speaker 2: and the man you want is waiting for you. Just
[25:22] Speaker 2: step out.
[25:23] Speaker 5: Hey, come on in, Danny.
[25:25] Speaker 15: Thanks, Yeah, like Frankie's new house, Denny classic, Yeah, wait,
[25:31] Speaker 15: will I show you outside?
[25:32] Speaker 5: You got the city for an on? Come on shore?
[25:35] Speaker 5: All right, my Manhattan Tower, Denny.
[25:42] Speaker 2: I'm happy for you.
[25:43] Speaker 5: Do you begin rent in a place like this? That's
[25:46] Speaker 5: why you're come to look?
[25:47] Speaker 2: Uh uh you know what? I want to take your
[25:50] Speaker 2: away from all this, Frankie.
[25:53] Speaker 15: Too much sweat got me here, Danny. It isn't going
[25:56] Speaker 15: to be easy.
[25:57] Speaker 2: Not hard, just to walk to the l of ring
[26:00] Speaker 2: a ride down town.
[26:02] Speaker 5: There were times when that could happen to Frankie.
[26:05] Speaker 2: No more, it's going to happen. It's got murder in it.
[26:07] Speaker 7: What are you talking about?
[26:09] Speaker 2: George Russell? What about him? Dead? Had a bomb pitched
[26:12] Speaker 2: through his living room window, rumors said, You used to
[26:14] Speaker 2: do things like that, Frankie, rubber balls through tenement.
[26:19] Speaker 5: Windows when I was a kid. I give it up,
[26:20] Speaker 5: no future.
[26:21] Speaker 2: It all gets back to Joe Gant. Frankie.
[26:23] Speaker 15: Come mind, Danny, you're in a classy place, make classy conversation.
[26:27] Speaker 5: What about Joe game?
[26:28] Speaker 2: The connection between you and who?
[26:30] Speaker 5: Finish the visit?
[26:31] Speaker 7: Danny? I got a dame.
[26:32] Speaker 2: It'll wait.
[26:34] Speaker 5: Maybe I can still.
[26:35] Speaker 15: Catch it, Danny. Maybe she's got a friend. You want
[26:39] Speaker 15: me to try?
[26:40] Speaker 2: Don't bother well and finish the visit. Sure it started
[26:45] Speaker 2: way back in June.
[26:46] Speaker 5: What did Danny come on? Come onut?
[26:47] Speaker 2: When Trees Russell was picked up on a narcotic charge.
[26:50] Speaker 15: George Russell. But Trece Russell, what is it with all
[26:53] Speaker 15: these rustle.
[26:53] Speaker 2: George Russell must have pleaded her to the office and
[26:55] Speaker 2: not have to press charges against his daughter, Patrese. He
[26:58] Speaker 2: didn't make it the charge nearly his daughter.
[27:00] Speaker 15: All right, what's this guy to do with me?
[27:02] Speaker 2: The arresting officer's name was Ed Couster. Russell was going
[27:05] Speaker 2: to get back at him. He found a way to
[27:07] Speaker 2: do it somehow. He found out Coster was transferred from
[27:10] Speaker 2: narcotics to burglary. That was his chance.
[27:14] Speaker 5: That's my date, Danny.
[27:15] Speaker 15: I don't like to keep a lady waiting tough to
[27:19] Speaker 15: see she's impatient, tough.
[27:21] Speaker 2: I'm telling a story. Russell came to you. He said
[27:24] Speaker 2: he wanted a fire set in his place for whatever
[27:26] Speaker 2: reason he gave you. For whatever amount he gave you,
[27:29] Speaker 2: look'd better forget it. So you arranged it. Sent Joe Gant.
[27:34] Speaker 2: Joe set the fire, all right, but he was followed
[27:36] Speaker 2: by Officer Ed Coster because Ed got a phone call
[27:39] Speaker 2: telling him where a burglar would be at what time?
[27:41] Speaker 15: All right, so they both burned.
[27:43] Speaker 5: Why should that gave me from a day?
[27:44] Speaker 2: The phone call Ed came from Russell. Russell rigged the
[27:47] Speaker 2: place to blow up. When the fire started at Blue Wall, right,
[27:50] Speaker 2: Gant was killed.
[27:52] Speaker 5: Ed died and I wipe a tear with the back
[27:55] Speaker 5: of my hand.
[27:56] Speaker 2: You couldn't let Russell get away with that. One of
[27:58] Speaker 2: your boys was killed. Bad for your reputation. You evened it.
[28:02] Speaker 2: The bomb in the car didn't work, but the bomb
[28:03] Speaker 2: in the living room did.
[28:05] Speaker 15: Danny.
[28:05] Speaker 2: You can say, good fighterr on your way, Frankie.
[28:07] Speaker 15: I asked you, Danny, you didn't agree, chill you put
[28:11] Speaker 15: down that gun.
[28:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not going to get to say Goodbier, Frankie.
[28:30] Speaker 2: She went away Broadways wearing its harlequin clothes. It winks
[28:53] Speaker 2: and eye and beckons, and in the press of crowd,
[28:57] Speaker 2: there the pale girl walks like a queen, because Broadway's
[29:02] Speaker 2: a dream street. And there that man with begging eyes,
[29:07] Speaker 2: hungry for a new dream. It's a laugh or a
[29:12] Speaker 2: cry with nothing in between. It's Broadway, the gaudiest, the
[29:19] Speaker 2: most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world. Broadway, My Beat.
[29:33] Speaker 3: Broadways, My Beat stars Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover,
[29:48] Speaker 3: with Charles Calvert as Tartaglia and Jack Krushian as Muggovin.
[29:52] Speaker 3: The program was produced and directed by Elliot Lewis, with
[29:55] Speaker 3: musical score composed and conducted by Alexander Courage. In tonight's story,
[30:00] Speaker 3: Anthony Barrett was heard as Frankie Crown. Featured in the
[30:03] Speaker 3: cast were Michael An Barrett, Paula Winslow, Herb Butterfield, and
[30:07] Speaker 3: Ed Max. My Friend Irma is everybody is Friend Irma.
[30:22] Speaker 3: There's something downright appealing in that gal's goofy mentality. And
[30:25] Speaker 3: every Sunday Evening Marie Wilson stars as the world's most
[30:29] Speaker 3: adorable dumbbell. My friend Irma Kathy Lewis is her level
[30:34] Speaker 3: headed roommate on most of these stations. Sunday nights, enjoy
[30:38] Speaker 3: CBS Radios, my friend Irma, Bill Anders speaking and remember
[30:42] Speaker 3: the Frankie Lane Show is your date for select syncopation
[30:45] Speaker 3: every Sunday afternoon on the CBS Radio Network.
[31:34] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. One thing I found fascinating about the end
[31:39] Speaker 1: is just the subtleties of Tony Barrett's performance, as you know,
[31:45] Speaker 1: he had, you know, right up until the end, his
[31:48] Speaker 1: character had been maintaining he was a legitimate businessman, and
[31:51] Speaker 1: then just the way the voice changed as it became
[31:56] Speaker 1: clear that he was full thog. And I like the
[32:01] Speaker 1: subtle movement there. Now, this episode is not the first
[32:05] Speaker 1: Broadways My Beat that dealt with the death of a
[32:09] Speaker 1: law enforcement officer, but this is the first one where
[32:14] Speaker 1: it's really kind of visited the meaning of that to characters,
[32:20] Speaker 1: particularly outside of Danny. And it's kind of an interesting
[32:24] Speaker 1: contrast between the way that Broadways My Beat handles the
[32:28] Speaker 1: sort of episode as opposed to Dragnet. You actually saw
[32:33] Speaker 1: people visibly by the death, You saw a mugg an
[32:39] Speaker 1: kind of struggling with his emotions a bit, and then
[32:43] Speaker 1: even Tartagia got irritable. Now this contrast with the dragnet
[32:49] Speaker 1: approach where they don't really stray far from that professional mode.
[32:55] Speaker 1: That's not to say that it's not there, but it's
[32:58] Speaker 1: more between the lines, and it's more something that's verbally
[33:03] Speaker 1: acknowledged than something that you're going to be able to
[33:07] Speaker 1: tell just by listening to them that something is wrong. Well,
[33:12] Speaker 1: listener comments and feedback, and we have a couple comments
[33:15] Speaker 1: from Mechanics sixty six regarding some recent episodes. Regarding the
[33:19] Speaker 1: Anna Compton murder case. He writes, I went to summer
[33:22] Speaker 1: camp in the Catskills, but not a charity camp. Good memories.
[33:26] Speaker 1: I thought Compton gave himself away the first time he
[33:29] Speaker 1: spoke with Danny when he said I'll take Anna away
[33:32] Speaker 1: from that place where she is. The way he said it,
[33:36] Speaker 1: it was as if he knew the place, and how
[33:38] Speaker 1: could he good point. And he also adds based released
[33:43] Speaker 1: on one's own recognissance, not cognisance as Danny said. Then
[33:48] Speaker 1: Harrison comments regarding our first listener support and Appreciation special.
[33:54] Speaker 1: I love It's a wonderful life, so it's really cool
[33:58] Speaker 1: to hear these actor prom for it before it's even released. Well,
[34:03] Speaker 1: thanks so much, Harrison, and I agree. I love to
[34:06] Speaker 1: hear those sort of promos for It's a Wonderful Life
[34:10] Speaker 1: and other films. You just kind of like, wow that
[34:14] Speaker 1: the people who heard that are in for a treat.
[34:17] Speaker 1: Although many people who saw It's a Wonderful Life at
[34:21] Speaker 1: a time did not appreciate it wouldn't really gain the
[34:25] Speaker 1: appreciation it deserved until it lapsed into the public domain,
[34:30] Speaker 1: but that's another story. Thanks so much, appreciate the comments.
[34:34] Speaker 1: Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.

[35:09] Speaker 10: Four or fifteen am then and I went out back
[35:11] Speaker 10: to the garage where mister Sullivan's car was parked. We
[35:14] Speaker 10: jammed ourselves into the trunk compartment and Brian closed the
[35:17] Speaker 10: door on us. The latch was rigged so that we
[35:19] Speaker 10: could push open the door from the inside. A few
[35:22] Speaker 10: minutes later, mister Sullivan came out, got in the car,
[35:25] Speaker 10: and we drove off. At three minutes to five, we
[35:28] Speaker 10: pulled up at the designated meeting place up an allegian park.
[35:31] Speaker 2: We waited.
[35:32] Speaker 10: Nothing happened. Five minutes past five am, still nothing outside.
[35:37] Speaker 4: It started the thunder.
[35:41] Speaker 2: Rain starting.
[35:42] Speaker 1: Man, it's Wendy.
[35:46] Speaker 4: Yeah here, Yeah.
[35:49] Speaker 2: It's a car coming up the road toward us.
[35:50] Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, mal minute, coming over this way.
[36:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, signs that way. Doesn't be caring.
