[2:17] Speaker 3: of Modern Crime now comes transcribed a radio starry Hollywood's

[2:22] Speaker 4: As let's sing taxi taxi.
[2:32] Speaker 5: Among men who know locomotion test it's Louie three to one.
[2:36] Speaker 4: Hello Louis, and mister Temple Climate, thank you Andy. Can
[2:41] Speaker 4: I watch you this beautifully? Whit? Can you after me? Louis?
[2:45] Speaker 4: What's wrong?
[2:45] Speaker 5: Something has to be wrong before I use a poetical
[2:48] Speaker 5: type speech. No but as a law which says cab
[2:50] Speaker 5: drivers can't use good England. Well, no, but no, witty?
[2:53] Speaker 5: Can I watch you waft.
[2:54] Speaker 4: Me to spring Lake Road? If you please? Spring Lake Road?
[2:58] Speaker 4: I never height of it. Nothing better to do, go
[3:00] Speaker 4: around making up new streets, Louis. Spring Lake Road is
[3:03] Speaker 4: in Westchester. Good, well, it's stay there, Huie. I want
[3:06] Speaker 4: to go there. Why I've been invited to dinner by
[3:09] Speaker 4: some friends. The food tastes better in west Chest No,
[3:12] Speaker 4: but my friends lived there, Okay, so please don't tuck, Louis.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Lots of people live in Westchester. Lots of people are crazy.
[3:23] Speaker 4: Westchester happens to be a very lovely place full of trees,
[3:27] Speaker 4: ain't it? The trees are attracted? Who apes? I'd better
[3:31] Speaker 4: tell you how to go.
[3:32] Speaker 5: Well to tell me I'll find it, I know, but
[3:34] Speaker 5: Russ and mister Temper, I'm a cab driver. Cab drivers
[3:38] Speaker 5: never get lost, Louis, don't say it.
[3:53] Speaker 4: We've just passed that oak tree on the left for
[3:56] Speaker 4: the third time, so it's an active tree. I thought
[4:00] Speaker 4: cab drivers never got lost. Somebody swiped all the streets
[4:03] Speaker 4: sign from the trees. So I got lost.
[4:06] Speaker 5: So I'll turn my badge, and so my wife will
[4:08] Speaker 5: despise me, so my children will go through life a
[4:10] Speaker 5: shames of their old man.
[4:12] Speaker 4: So douay, Louis, it's ten o'clock. My dinner invitation was
[4:16] Speaker 4: for eight thirty. You'll never make it. I don't doubt that,
[4:20] Speaker 4: but I'm hungry. Next time you get to an eating place,
[4:23] Speaker 4: don't say anymore. Right up the road, Yeah, the happy hamburger,
[4:27] Speaker 4: Ben Lawton proprietor doesn't look very happy. Why does it
[4:30] Speaker 4: got to look happy?
[4:31] Speaker 6: Above, I'm at the place itself, So maybe it looks
[4:35] Speaker 6: a little like if the wolf came around and huffed
[4:37] Speaker 6: and puffed, he wouldn't have to strain along before it
[4:39] Speaker 6: fell down. But food is food, except when it's a
[4:43] Speaker 6: happy hamburger.
[4:44] Speaker 5: Perhaps, however, hey, this must be the wolf puffing or
[4:47] Speaker 5: maybe puffing.
[4:50] Speaker 4: Here he is, yeah, savage looking at Nimy some woo.
[4:55] Speaker 4: The poor dog looks as if he hadn't eaten for
[4:58] Speaker 4: a week. Let's get into the before he mistakes me
[5:01] Speaker 4: for a tea ball stake feels happy. Hamburger is not
[5:09] Speaker 4: having a busy night. What can I do for you?
[5:12] Speaker 4: We'd like some dinner.
[5:13] Speaker 7: Well, we're kind of closing, but you haven't closed yet. Oh,
[5:17] Speaker 7: I guess we ain't said anywhere. I guess the missus
[5:21] Speaker 7: dish up some food. I'll go tell her.
[5:25] Speaker 4: A very enthusiastic type hooles. Never mind that, I hope
[5:28] Speaker 4: they have a well stocked lder. I hope it further
[5:31] Speaker 4: occurs to me that they don't have to go out
[5:33] Speaker 4: and catch that dog before they have a lighter at all.
[5:35] Speaker 4: Stop hoping a man could get seasoned. Of course, this
[5:38] Speaker 4: place may be an undiscovered gourmet's delight, but I wouldn't
[5:41] Speaker 4: bet on it. A gourmet who could have delighted in
[5:58] Speaker 4: this place is still under covered. What do you think
[6:03] Speaker 4: of missus Lawton's cooking? You know so, I don't want
[6:05] Speaker 4: to think of it. I'm trying to eat it. Finish
[6:07] Speaker 4: with your jennifellers more likely to finish. How about dessert? Well,
[6:12] Speaker 4: we got blueberry pie, we got huckleberry pie. And what's
[6:15] Speaker 4: the difference.
[6:16] Speaker 7: Huckleberry pie is a nickel moore? Why harder to spell?
[6:23] Speaker 8: What?
[6:23] Speaker 4: Sure you have apple pie? Oh?
[6:38] Speaker 6: Man?
[6:39] Speaker 4: What's the matter, lily dinner? Yeah? I know exactly what
[6:42] Speaker 4: you mean. However, we won't starve to death. Why do
[6:46] Speaker 4: you try to find your way back? I beg your pardon.
[6:49] Speaker 4: It wasn't made up with a pie. I was afraid
[6:51] Speaker 4: it was.
[6:54] Speaker 5: I think maybe yeah, flat flat, Fine, we're back in
[7:01] Speaker 5: front of that oak tree again. You keep your eye
[7:04] Speaker 5: on that open mister Temple while I get the spare.
[7:07] Speaker 4: Yeah, wants some help? No thanks, thank you, mister Temple. Yes, Louis,
[7:16] Speaker 4: come here. Don't tell me you can't lift the spare
[7:20] Speaker 4: all by yourself, despair. I could lift. But there's something
[7:23] Speaker 4: else you see? Yes, a hitchhiker man in his forties,
[7:31] Speaker 4: craps dressed in farmer's clothing. He might have walking terribly tired, Louis,
[7:36] Speaker 4: he got dead.
[7:50] Speaker 5: Somebody shoots a guy, all right, Maybe you don't like him.
[7:53] Speaker 5: Why does he have to stuff the corpse into the
[7:55] Speaker 5: trunk of my cat.
[7:56] Speaker 4: I don't know. There were no papers of any kind
[7:59] Speaker 4: on the body, all right, so he's a total stranger.
[8:02] Speaker 4: But why are we heading back to the Happy Hamburger?
[8:04] Speaker 4: Because that's where we must have acquired the corpse. It's
[8:07] Speaker 4: the only place we stopped. We're out the side of
[8:09] Speaker 4: the car unless he was already in the trunk before
[8:12] Speaker 4: we left the city.
[8:12] Speaker 5: No, no, I checked the tires plus the spare before
[8:15] Speaker 5: I picked you up.
[8:16] Speaker 4: Then it's the Happy Hamburger. The man was murdered fairly recently. Anyway,
[8:21] Speaker 4: how do you know? No rigor more? This body warning?
[8:24] Speaker 4: The mind of him mind?
[8:25] Speaker 9: You know?
[8:26] Speaker 4: I'll stay a dope. And it's the temple LII. What
[8:30] Speaker 4: kind of a welcome you think we're going to get
[8:31] Speaker 4: at the Hamburger? It's hard to tell, except that it
[8:35] Speaker 4: may not be a welcome at all. Joints is dunk.
[8:57] Speaker 4: Looks like maybe they went out of business. There's a
[8:59] Speaker 4: house behind the restaurant. Let's talk too. The lawtons may
[9:02] Speaker 4: have gone to bed. It's after eleven. It is very late.
[9:05] Speaker 4: Maybe we should go to bed. Becomes a Julia werewolf again.
[9:09] Speaker 4: Yeah that animals should be bad, but not by me.
[9:12] Speaker 4: All the flesh I got I need from along living.
[9:15] Speaker 4: I'm coming as the hound of the basket. He's not
[9:18] Speaker 4: bothering so far.
[9:20] Speaker 5: He kept his feet to themselves. Suppose he decides the
[9:22] Speaker 5: risk if you and see how we.
[9:23] Speaker 4: Take it, and it's a chance we'll have to take yep,
[9:26] Speaker 4: here goes Oh, look now that our trummer has left
[9:32] Speaker 4: us again, if I couldn't be more pleased.
[9:35] Speaker 5: You know, if they're asleep, then I'm gonna love us
[9:38] Speaker 5: with a great love, and I'm not at the moment
[9:40] Speaker 5: seeking affection. Yeah, missus Lawton, that's right. My name is
[9:46] Speaker 5: Simon Templer. This is Louis.
[9:48] Speaker 2: What do you want.
[9:49] Speaker 4: You cooked dinner for us a little while ago, so
[9:51] Speaker 4: I cooked dinner for you. But since that time we've
[9:54] Speaker 4: had a little trouble. We had a flat tire.
[9:57] Speaker 2: This ain't a garage.
[9:58] Speaker 4: I wasn't referring to the when I said trouble.
[10:01] Speaker 2: Why don't you say what you're referring to?
[10:03] Speaker 4: Well, I would rather your husband were here when I do.
[10:06] Speaker 4: He's asleep or he can be waked. What far it's
[10:10] Speaker 4: a matter of some importance. You still ain't said anything.
[10:13] Speaker 4: The matter might be murder, murder, that's right.
[10:18] Speaker 9: Come in I thinks.
[10:25] Speaker 2: Right in here it's the parlor. Michelle takes time to
[10:29] Speaker 2: waken mister Lawton and sleeps hard.
[10:32] Speaker 4: Well, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid it's necessary.
[10:34] Speaker 2: That don't make it easier, But I'll get him up
[10:37] Speaker 2: from drift.
[10:41] Speaker 4: I think the wait for her is gracious. Very few
[10:44] Speaker 4: women are at their best in the middle of the night. Lowings,
[10:47] Speaker 4: that's what you'd think, would you like? No?
[10:50] Speaker 5: Okay, hey, mister Temple, you figuring the deceased we got
[10:55] Speaker 5: in the camp was put there, but a lot not necessarily.
[10:58] Speaker 4: They did have the opportunity. So what anyone else who
[11:01] Speaker 4: might have been around.
[11:02] Speaker 10: The place where we were having dinner or stop complicating,
[11:04] Speaker 10: thinks it's bad enough.
[11:07] Speaker 4: This is some Paula I've seen in cheerier places. I've
[11:11] Speaker 4: got a radioil no television set? Is that the well,
[11:15] Speaker 4: mister Temple, What do you think of television? I think
[11:17] Speaker 4: of it as infrequently as I can. Missus Lawton is
[11:21] Speaker 4: apparently having difficulty awaken her husband. From what we've seen
[11:24] Speaker 4: as a guy, how can she tell when he's awake?
[11:41] Speaker 4: And eleven twelve?
[11:46] Speaker 5: You know what happens at midnight? Ghosts take walks. Maybe
[11:51] Speaker 5: our bites have flown the coop. It's a possibility. How
[11:54] Speaker 5: can a boid fly a coop?
[11:56] Speaker 4: Right here? They can't fire a whoop? I hello, mister Lawton.
[12:04] Speaker 4: You didn't have to bother dressing for us. I dress
[12:07] Speaker 4: for myself.
[12:07] Speaker 2: Don't go second mud over the best rug sack where
[12:10] Speaker 2: you are?
[12:11] Speaker 7: I'll set where I am. Wife tells me you are
[12:14] Speaker 7: mister templar I am. She also tells me you got
[12:18] Speaker 7: something to say about a murder.
[12:19] Speaker 4: I have say it in a moment. Your wife and
[12:24] Speaker 4: you own the Happy Hamburger. You already know that. I
[12:27] Speaker 4: noticed quite some farm land behind the house yours. Yeah,
[12:31] Speaker 4: frement yourself? Pretty much? Does that? Pretty much mean you
[12:35] Speaker 4: have help sometimes hired hand named webster? Why only sometimes? Well,
[12:41] Speaker 4: you up and quit this afternoon. It's too bad. Oh,
[12:44] Speaker 4: you'll be back as.
[12:45] Speaker 7: Soon as he spends his money. You might be wrong
[12:48] Speaker 7: about that, always has before. What are you getting at?
[12:53] Speaker 4: Suppose we go outside to the cab? Huh? I don't mind,
[12:58] Speaker 4: Come on emmy.
[12:58] Speaker 2: I'm right here.
[13:07] Speaker 4: What kind of a man is wedsday? Not much?
[13:09] Speaker 7: Account works when he has to eat, gets a full belly,
[13:13] Speaker 7: stops working.
[13:14] Speaker 4: The philosopher perhaps ever have any quarrels with him, I
[13:17] Speaker 4: don't know.
[13:18] Speaker 2: Is the ancient mister templar?
[13:19] Speaker 4: Perhaps? But is there any reason why your husband should
[13:22] Speaker 4: hesitate about answering that question? No reason, no quarrels, right, Louis, Yeah,
[13:29] Speaker 4: please open the Trump compartment, will you sure? In a second.
[13:35] Speaker 4: There's something I'd like to show you, mister Lawton, if
[13:39] Speaker 4: you were planning on surprising anybody, give up? What do
[13:42] Speaker 4: you mean?
[13:43] Speaker 10: Look, m looks like Boyd's cancel, like Coops, something I
[13:49] Speaker 10: picked the wrong Boyd.
[13:50] Speaker 4: We have mislaid our corpse. Mister Strange, say how about
[13:55] Speaker 4: letting us in on this. Mister Lawton, was your hired hand,
[13:59] Speaker 4: a man in the forties with brown hair and eyes
[14:02] Speaker 4: of stocky build a small scar under his left job bone.
[14:05] Speaker 4: That's Webster. You must have met him. What do you
[14:08] Speaker 4: have to say for himself? We met him, but he
[14:12] Speaker 4: didn't have anything to say.
[14:27] Speaker 5: We didn't start out being the great loves of the
[14:29] Speaker 5: lot of his life.
[14:31] Speaker 4: But I hate to think what they must be thinking
[14:32] Speaker 4: of us now, right, I hate to think of the
[14:34] Speaker 4: missing mister Webster. Yeah, he didn't even say goodbye. It's
[14:38] Speaker 4: the temple of what happened to him. I don't know.
[14:41] Speaker 4: Corpses rarely are the active tide, but the late mister
[14:45] Speaker 4: Webster may have been an exception.
[14:47] Speaker 5: Exceptions like that, I hope stay away from me. We're
[14:51] Speaker 5: in what could easily be an overgrown film station.
[14:54] Speaker 4: Slow down, loye, this is expert. All town nearest the
[14:58] Speaker 4: Happy Hamburger Play seems to be shut up for the night.
[15:02] Speaker 5: I didn't take the sidewalks in though. Hey, up ahead,
[15:06] Speaker 5: the gay white way.
[15:08] Speaker 4: The drug store badly still open. Let's stop there learning okay.
[15:16] Speaker 5: Yeah, windows full of harnesses, vitalizer and yard goods.
[15:22] Speaker 4: How did you know what? It's a drug store and there's
[15:24] Speaker 4: a large sign advertising ice cream sodas in front. Oh
[15:27] Speaker 4: well that explains it. Well, thisting only for information. Come along.
[15:37] Speaker 5: Joined us crawling with juveniles, and look at the jukebox.
[15:41] Speaker 4: So it is the waitress behind the fountain that's too public.
[15:44] Speaker 4: The waitress the fountain, h mister templar, I just noticed
[15:49] Speaker 4: behind the castrogister dissent. Look it.
[15:52] Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll not put your eyes back in their sockets.
[15:57] Speaker 5: She's dressed in gingham. She's wearing pigtails and.
[16:00] Speaker 4: Big blue eye. She's nearly the farmer's daughter. Lewis. Is
[16:03] Speaker 4: that a fact? Hey, maybe she knows a joke. He's
[16:07] Speaker 4: still Lewis. She may be able to help us. Is
[16:10] Speaker 4: help the word you really had in mind? Good evening?
[16:14] Speaker 4: Then I beg your pardon?
[16:16] Speaker 9: Sofa? What's for?
[16:18] Speaker 4: Mmm? And farm? Mean's what it used to be? Not
[16:21] Speaker 4: to mention the farmer's daughter.
[16:23] Speaker 9: It was a little stranger.
[16:25] Speaker 4: Oh that's Louis.
[16:26] Speaker 9: It's not bad either, but it looks married. Who are you?
[16:29] Speaker 9: I'm Simon Templar, I'm Teddy. And what are you doing
[16:32] Speaker 9: after I gets through here?
[16:33] Speaker 4: Well?
[16:33] Speaker 9: Are you married?
[16:34] Speaker 4: No?
[16:35] Speaker 9: What a coincidence.
[16:36] Speaker 8: I'm not married either, but it happens all the time.
[16:38] Speaker 8: But what I wanted my closest in half hour? Tell
[16:42] Speaker 8: me that, my dear Teddy. I look, what do you
[16:45] Speaker 8: know about a man named Webster? Dan Webster, I imagine.
[16:48] Speaker 9: So hired hand out to the Lawtons.
[16:50] Speaker 4: Yeah that's the Dan Webster I had in mind.
[16:53] Speaker 9: He wears a private property no trespassing sign on him.
[16:56] Speaker 4: Oh who's signed?
[16:57] Speaker 9: Missus Lawton's?
[17:00] Speaker 4: Mister Lawton feel about that?
[17:02] Speaker 9: Mister Lawton has never seen sid to whisper, sweet, nothing's
[17:04] Speaker 9: in my showlike ears? Don't you think they show like
[17:08] Speaker 9: my ears. I mean I hadn't noticed stop wasting time
[17:12] Speaker 9: and do so noticing.
[17:13] Speaker 4: Look I'm almost old enough to be your father.
[17:15] Speaker 9: Maybe, but you're not my father.
[17:17] Speaker 4: Uh. Good evening, Teddy.
[17:19] Speaker 9: So far, it's a terrible eating Where are you going, Louie?
[17:22] Speaker 4: And I have an erin to do?
[17:23] Speaker 9: My phone number is one three seven in case in
[17:26] Speaker 9: case of what your erin is out of town. Goodbye.
[17:34] Speaker 4: Wow. I'm afraid Wow is exactly right.
[17:38] Speaker 10: Oh you know, I'm coming to the conclusion they got.
[17:41] Speaker 4: Something these small tons up in Westion. But you mean
[17:45] Speaker 4: they have is Teddy and you're married and we have
[17:47] Speaker 4: an appointment? Yeah? Well the Happy Hamburger. You mean we're
[17:51] Speaker 4: gonna wake the Lawtons again? I hope not. So what
[17:53] Speaker 4: are we going out there for? We're going to dress
[17:57] Speaker 4: us on very proud property. I ought to hang a
[18:15] Speaker 4: sign with shuttle on it. I'm like, I don't imagine
[18:18] Speaker 4: we're going to be coming out here again.
[18:20] Speaker 5: You're not breaking my heart. You know, every time we
[18:23] Speaker 5: come out to the Happy Hamburger gets darker. I think
[18:26] Speaker 5: I'll coin a proverb too late. It's always darker before
[18:30] Speaker 5: it's lighter.
[18:31] Speaker 4: I don't think that'll catch on Happy Hamburgers. Up ahead, Louis,
[18:36] Speaker 4: we have a problem. Oh, thanks for letting me. What
[18:39] Speaker 4: kind of a problem have we got? We gotta find
[18:41] Speaker 4: a pond, a brook, or perhaps a lake. You're got
[18:44] Speaker 4: a sudden desire to go swimming, No, not swimming.
[18:47] Speaker 5: You forget something, Louis, I always forget something.
[18:49] Speaker 4: What is it this time? Ponds, brooks or lakes create mud? Oh?
[18:53] Speaker 5: Thanks a lot tonight. I don't need any more. Call
[18:56] Speaker 5: me hypersensitive. I just don't need any money.
[18:59] Speaker 4: That is not the under these trees. Okay, you know
[19:06] Speaker 4: about that mud. I have a specture mistaken.
[19:09] Speaker 5: That's because you've got a suspicious nature being got to
[19:12] Speaker 5: get starting.
[19:15] Speaker 4: They were heading away from the house. Why we're looking first?
[19:18] Speaker 4: I know, I know, And they rarely occur in house. Okay, okay.
[19:23] Speaker 5: Does this watery object you're looking for have to be
[19:26] Speaker 5: any place in particular? Or are we surveying Westchester count.
[19:30] Speaker 4: It has to be on the Lawton's land All that helps? Yeah?
[19:33] Speaker 4: Probably they got one hundred and thirty nine acres and
[19:36] Speaker 4: in the dark. How are we going to search you?
[19:38] Speaker 5: I understand, Hazel Twigs, don't wait anymore. That hound without
[19:44] Speaker 5: a home again, I hope he goes away and be silly.
[19:47] Speaker 5: Way you want to meet up with him, you'll do
[19:49] Speaker 5: all the wanting by yourself. Why, because he's going to
[19:52] Speaker 5: be a hazel twig?
[19:54] Speaker 4: What is hey went on? You mean he'll help us
[19:57] Speaker 4: find water? Actually, but what is all this six about water? Anyway?
[20:01] Speaker 4: Among other things? Louis water washes away blood. No, I'll
[20:18] Speaker 4: tell you a secret, mister Templar. I never like hikes.
[20:21] Speaker 4: It can't be much longer. That dog is definitely leading
[20:24] Speaker 4: us somewhere. Aren't sure she'll probably to a poney buried
[20:27] Speaker 4: last month. I don't get it. We're referring to the
[20:31] Speaker 4: junior size lake that pond? Yes, no, what? Oh fine, fine,
[20:37] Speaker 4: he went swimming. We gotta go swimming too. No, we
[20:41] Speaker 4: can walk around the pond. We're at one end of it. Hey,
[20:45] Speaker 4: look at that on ground hunker Hamburger stopped. Yeah, just
[20:48] Speaker 4: beyond the pond in a small plump of trees would
[20:51] Speaker 4: join them. Of course, Come on? Why because the land
[20:54] Speaker 4: around the pond is muddy, all right?
[20:56] Speaker 5: So the land around upon is muddy. This fills me
[20:58] Speaker 5: with a great dog not moving he's waiting for him.
[21:01] Speaker 4: Also fills my shoes with mud. Hey, you know what
[21:05] Speaker 4: happens to trees when they die, They become telegraphed. Stop
[21:08] Speaker 4: swiping my jokes. That dog is going up with joy.
[21:15] Speaker 5: What has he got to be so happybody hasn't even
[21:16] Speaker 5: gone near a tree. He's digging at the ground for sure.
[21:19] Speaker 5: You had that bonny bury last month.
[21:21] Speaker 4: Do you know what we're gonna do? Loing, I got
[21:23] Speaker 4: an unhappy idea.
[21:24] Speaker 5: We're gonna copy the dog and dig right, I'm already
[21:27] Speaker 5: looking for something to do with.
[21:29] Speaker 4: What are we going to dig for something the dog lost? No,
[21:32] Speaker 4: it was something we lost and mister Temples a couple
[21:51] Speaker 4: of feet more, I'll be in China. He'll be silly.
[21:54] Speaker 4: You can't get to China by digging straight down, but
[21:57] Speaker 4: you can't where you get is. Australia tells me things
[22:01] Speaker 4: like that, Hey, what is it, Louis? From where you
[22:06] Speaker 4: are you can't see, but from down here, Well, I'll
[22:10] Speaker 4: come to the edge of the hole. Well, Louis, we've
[22:15] Speaker 4: kind of found that corps all over again. Look you
[22:19] Speaker 4: tell that dolls to shut up. Wait, I don't feel
[22:21] Speaker 4: so now. I'll give you a hand, Louis, help climb
[22:24] Speaker 4: out of the hole. That sounds like a carp backfire
[22:28] Speaker 4: roads too far away, never mind climbing up her, Louis,
[22:31] Speaker 4: I'm going to join you down.
[22:32] Speaker 11: Hey, what's going on? And I'm not gonna like the answer?
[22:38] Speaker 11: And someone is having target practice with us for target wool.
[22:42] Speaker 11: I could see a vague figure at the other side
[22:44] Speaker 11: of the pond, too dark to identify. Oh, there goes
[22:48] Speaker 11: that houn that walks like a horse. Probably figured was
[22:51] Speaker 11: too crowded down here. Hey, mister templar, I hate to mention, miss,
[22:57] Speaker 11: but if the boy with the gun kind.
[22:59] Speaker 4: Of warm over heah, I realized that, Louis, this grave
[23:03] Speaker 4: we're in isn't level. The edge on your side is
[23:05] Speaker 4: lower than the one facing the pond, which means you
[23:08] Speaker 4: can climb out with our being seen. Make for the trees,
[23:10] Speaker 4: then for the roads, your cab and if you police
[23:12] Speaker 4: him may be sober, then what are you going to do?
[23:14] Speaker 4: Stay here? Otherwise our gun shooting friend will head for
[23:17] Speaker 4: the cab too. But while I'm getting help, you are
[23:20] Speaker 4: level to be getting too. Now that's a chance we'll
[23:22] Speaker 4: have to take, and believe me, I'm not taking it
[23:24] Speaker 4: with any great joy, but we have no alternative.
[23:26] Speaker 12: You better hurry, okay, mister templar, But look at with
[23:29] Speaker 12: the way the taxi businesses, be careful. I don't want
[23:32] Speaker 12: to have to look for another fair and a counter.
[23:34] Speaker 12: You got shot in the woods?
[23:52] Speaker 4: To me, well, it's been a lovely life.
[23:56] Speaker 9: Simon, what on earth are you doing down there?
[23:58] Speaker 4: What on earth on, Teddy?
[24:01] Speaker 9: Is it fun down there?
[24:02] Speaker 2: Because if it's fun.
[24:03] Speaker 4: Off, I'm right down Teddy, stay where you are.
[24:08] Speaker 9: May not be very fancy down here, but it is cozy. Simon,
[24:13] Speaker 9: you didn't tell me you weren't alone.
[24:14] Speaker 4: I didn't have a chance to better not to look
[24:16] Speaker 4: at him too long.
[24:17] Speaker 9: Simon, what on earth are you doing down at the
[24:19] Speaker 9: bottom of a grave with mister Lawton?
[24:22] Speaker 4: He is mister Lawton, isn't he?
[24:24] Speaker 9: Well, of course he is. Why do you say it
[24:27] Speaker 9: in that funny way?
[24:28] Speaker 4: Because we were supposed to think it was Dan Webster,
[24:30] Speaker 4: except that I hadn't thought so none for a while
[24:33] Speaker 4: and he was murdered.
[24:35] Speaker 9: Teddy, did you murder it?
[24:37] Speaker 4: No?
[24:38] Speaker 9: Well, I'm certainly glad to hear that, because you're very handsome.
[24:41] Speaker 9: But after all, even hansome fellow shouldn't murder people. What
[24:44] Speaker 9: they should do with.
[24:45] Speaker 4: Teddy Dan Webster, along with missus Lawton murdered mister Lawton.
[24:48] Speaker 9: Well, that's not very surprising, because I did have a
[24:51] Speaker 9: crush on each other, and nobody loved mister Lawton anyway.
[24:53] Speaker 4: They must have planned to leave town immediately after the murder.
[24:56] Speaker 4: But Teddy, did you happen to notice a dog about?
[25:00] Speaker 4: Have to mention Dan Weston.
[25:02] Speaker 9: I heard somebody running in a dog barking before I
[25:04] Speaker 9: found you.
[25:05] Speaker 4: Dog, mister frightened webster, are so.
[25:08] Speaker 9: That's all right?
[25:09] Speaker 4: How did you find me?
[25:10] Speaker 9: I noticed your car outside the Happy Hamburger. I lived
[25:12] Speaker 9: on the road a bit and was going home, so
[25:14] Speaker 9: I knew you were someplace around. And when I was
[25:17] Speaker 9: a little girl, I used to be a.
[25:18] Speaker 4: Girl Scott because you wanted to learn how to tie
[25:21] Speaker 4: out to bill campfire, No, because.
[25:24] Speaker 9: I wanted to learn how to track a man. I
[25:27] Speaker 9: had a feeling it would come in handy it had.
[25:33] Speaker 4: Did anybody call for a cat? Louis excuse me, daddy,
[25:38] Speaker 4: Hello Louis, Hello, Louie says, I thought you'd gone to
[25:42] Speaker 4: town for help. It would take too long. Maybe I
[25:45] Speaker 4: could get behind the villain and surprise him.
[25:47] Speaker 2: So instead, mister Templey, you surprised me.
[26:04] Speaker 4: Back to the Hamburger again. Well hungry, no, except perhaps
[26:08] Speaker 4: for justice, Simon.
[26:10] Speaker 9: The Lawton's car is outside, missus Lawton's in it.
[26:12] Speaker 4: Come on into the cab this way. It'd be as
[26:15] Speaker 4: quiet as you can't. All right, you can't see us
[26:23] Speaker 4: under the trees here, can your ignition on? Louis, be
[26:26] Speaker 4: ready to start the car. Okay, it's ready. That's just
[26:32] Speaker 4: coming out of the house carrying a couple of suitcases
[26:39] Speaker 4: getting into the car. Here they go, Louis, I know,
[26:45] Speaker 4: follow them. You may not notice they're being followed. And
[26:50] Speaker 4: supposing they do, I will have to chance that.
[26:52] Speaker 5: Okay, but look, I don't mind so much being shot myself.
[26:56] Speaker 5: But don't forget this here. Can't belongs to the company.
[26:59] Speaker 5: I can't afford the bullets in us. We're coming into
[27:14] Speaker 5: ext Brook.
[27:15] Speaker 4: What now, mister templand Teddy at this hour of the night.
[27:18] Speaker 4: No one would be about him. I right, that is
[27:20] Speaker 4: kind of light. The police station is where the next
[27:22] Speaker 4: block in that case. Catch up with him, Louie, quick, well,
[27:25] Speaker 4: I should have a collision with I'm preferably a small size.
[27:28] Speaker 4: When you're a good driver, Louis, run them off the
[27:30] Speaker 4: road to caver. Mind that hit them as soon as
[27:33] Speaker 4: we get opposite the station.
[27:35] Speaker 5: Okay, I only hope it will show on the meter.
[27:39] Speaker 5: We're getting close to.
[27:40] Speaker 4: Him and Nanks going Louis Ah didn't leave a scratch
[28:03] Speaker 4: of fender. They wanted those tops polite, which is very unusual.
[28:08] Speaker 4: And Louis be still, why I have to explain things
[28:11] Speaker 4: to Teddy here from what I heard sheet on Louie,
[28:14] Speaker 4: I shut up, Please Simon tell me, well, do you
[28:17] Speaker 4: see Teddy? Missus Lawton and Webster planned to kill mister
[28:20] Speaker 4: Lawton and then leave town, figuring no one would ever know.
[28:22] Speaker 9: How did they expect to get away with it?
[28:24] Speaker 4: Actually, their idea of placing the corps in the trunk
[28:26] Speaker 4: compartment of the cab was clever. Normally the body wouldn't
[28:29] Speaker 4: have been discovered for days and then miles away from
[28:32] Speaker 4: exper But instead.
[28:33] Speaker 9: You got a flat and came back.
[28:35] Speaker 4: Very lucky flat. But not for missus Lawton and Webster.
[28:38] Speaker 4: She got quite a shock when she saw her smiling faces,
[28:41] Speaker 4: but she kept her head and sent Webster out to
[28:43] Speaker 4: remove the body from Louie's cab and hide it. The
[28:46] Speaker 4: only mistake she made was being too housewifely. What do
[28:50] Speaker 4: you mean, oh, when Webster returned. Her instinctive reaction was
[28:53] Speaker 4: to tell him not to track mud on the rug.
[28:56] Speaker 4: If he'd been asleep in the house, there shouldn't have
[28:58] Speaker 4: been mud on his shoes. Therefore, I concluded he'd been out,
[29:01] Speaker 4: I see, and when the body was missing, I knew
[29:04] Speaker 4: that he'd buried it. The mud also told me the
[29:07] Speaker 4: burial place had to be near water.
[29:08] Speaker 9: And mister Lawton's dog led you to the burial place,
[29:11] Speaker 9: and that's where I found you. Simon, Yes, but we
[29:17] Speaker 9: were kind of interrupted back there, so.
[29:21] Speaker 4: Wow, wow, wow, Louis, I'm not hearing a thing. Was
[29:25] Speaker 4: she a thing? In my riview mirror? Louis, we've reached
[29:28] Speaker 4: Teddy's place, stopped the car. Okay, But Simon, my dear,
[29:33] Speaker 4: you're very lovely, but you're very young, so I'm afraid
[29:37] Speaker 4: this is where the farmer's daughter goes back to the farm.

[31:12] Speaker 3: returns to NBC next Wednesday, Take a date. Here are
[31:14] Speaker 3: the Halls of Ivy next Wednesday evening. The chimes are
[31:18] Speaker 3: your Invitation. Next It's Sam Stay then an hour long
[31:20] Speaker 3: drama on Theater Guild on.
[31:22] Speaker 1: NBC Welcome back. I love this episode. It is peak
[31:39] Speaker 1: Louis and the Saint storytelling, so many great lines, and
[31:44] Speaker 1: they're really just given a great chance to play off
[31:47] Speaker 1: of each other. I will note that we once again
[31:51] Speaker 1: have a reference that tossed this to New York with
[31:54] Speaker 1: them talking about Westchester, so apparently not in a minor
[31:59] Speaker 1: league city anymore. That was just for last week. One
[32:03] Speaker 1: thing I wanted to talk about was the murderer's joke
[32:07] Speaker 1: when he was pretending to be the restaurant owner about
[32:11] Speaker 1: the five cent difference in the price of blueberry pie
[32:15] Speaker 1: and huckleberry pie, being explained by the fact that huckleberry
[32:20] Speaker 1: is harder to spell. Now, for most listeners to The Saint,
[32:25] Speaker 1: that might as well be the case, because certainly Huckleberry's
[32:31] Speaker 1: the idea that there was such a thing was something
[32:35] Speaker 1: that people were culturally aware of, but probably few had
[32:39] Speaker 1: actually ever tasted them. Huckleberries are kind of a regional
[32:44] Speaker 1: delicacy where I live. They only grow in Washington, Oregon, Idaho,
[32:51] Speaker 1: and Montana. Now, while blueberries are very easy to cultivate
[32:57] Speaker 1: and wildly available throughout the Unida States, the huckleberry really
[33:02] Speaker 1: only grows in the wild and they are very expensive.
[33:07] Speaker 1: Where I grew up in northwest Montana, there were signs
[33:10] Speaker 1: for buying wild huckleberries that offered very high per gallon price.
[33:19] Speaker 1: My family we decided we would try our hand at
[33:22] Speaker 1: it once, and we spent several hours at this and
[33:26] Speaker 1: we yielded three, not three gallons, three auckleberries. There are
[33:32] Speaker 1: people who know the spots where the huckleberries grow, and
[33:36] Speaker 1: they pick and they are quite thorough and the whole
[33:40] Speaker 1: challenge of growing these outside of the wild is still
[33:46] Speaker 1: very much a live issue. Some of our best universities
[33:51] Speaker 1: in this portion of the country have spent years trying
[33:54] Speaker 1: to figure this out. My brother was talking to me
[33:58] Speaker 1: about it last time I was out in Montana, and
[34:01] Speaker 1: despite years and decades of research, you can still only
[34:06] Speaker 1: pick them in the wild. And there are quite a
[34:08] Speaker 1: few products that get made from huckleberries. You can get
[34:13] Speaker 1: things like huckleberry jams online, but also out here you
[34:18] Speaker 1: can get things like huckleberry flavored chocolates and huckleberry ice cream.
[34:25] Speaker 1: That's just fantastic moral of the story. If you ever
[34:29] Speaker 1: do find yourself in one of these states where we
[34:33] Speaker 1: have huckleberries, be sure and tried. I think everybody should
[34:36] Speaker 1: taste huckleberry at least once. All right, well, now it's
