[2:05] Speaker 2: Candy Madson. And this is the new year's episode from
[2:08] Speaker 2: December seventeenth of nineteen forty nine. Here is the valley.
[2:13] Speaker 1: Of the move.
[2:22] Speaker 3: Hello, you can't to eight two nine. Yes, this is
[2:26] Speaker 3: Candy Madson.
[2:35] Speaker 4: The National Broadcasting Company presents Candy Madson yukon two eight
[2:39] Speaker 4: two o nine. This is the start of a mystery.
[2:51] Speaker 4: Our main character is a San Francisco girl, Detective Candy Madsen.
[2:54] Speaker 4: There are others in the show too, and Inspector Mallard,
[2:57] Speaker 4: a gent who calls himself Ram Brandt, Watson, a cowboy,
[3:00] Speaker 4: a dude, ranch owner, and a gal the casting agency
[3:03] Speaker 4: assured us was a dowager slightly boozy. There are a
[3:07] Speaker 4: few other voices along the way too. I think that
[3:09] Speaker 4: has all the makings of a good mystery show, don't you. Well,
[3:12] Speaker 4: let's go on from here and find out. So here's
[3:15] Speaker 4: Candy Matson.
[3:20] Speaker 3: Like the man just said, this is the start of
[3:22] Speaker 3: a mystery. Christmas had me completely tuck it out, no
[3:25] Speaker 3: when it invited me to the Rose Bowl game or
[3:27] Speaker 3: the East West of keys Are. So I decided to
[3:29] Speaker 3: make like a bear and hibernate over New Year's. It
[3:32] Speaker 3: worked out perfectly because my old friend rem Brandt Watson
[3:35] Speaker 3: put it. You wish to beat nineteen jfty and some
[3:37] Speaker 3: remote spot. Is that the idea, dog? That's the idea, Docky.
[3:41] Speaker 5: I have a perfect place for you, a dude rat reasonable,
[3:44] Speaker 5: just on the other side of Sonma, in the Valley
[3:46] Speaker 5: of the Moon.
[3:47] Speaker 3: Valley of the Moon, New Year's even the valley of
[3:50] Speaker 3: the Moon, rem Brandt.
[3:51] Speaker 5: That sends me good. Maybe it can send us both.
[3:54] Speaker 5: I have a commission to take some pictures up there
[3:56] Speaker 5: for a brochure they're putting out. I have to be
[3:58] Speaker 5: there tomorrow afternoon. Yea, I see your nibbling at the date,
[4:02] Speaker 5: I shall be blood. Why don't you drive me up.
[4:04] Speaker 3: You when your point, I'll pick you up tomorrow at
[4:07] Speaker 3: what time?
[4:07] Speaker 5: Let us be spectacular and say hi noon, Hi noon,
[4:11] Speaker 5: And I do bring some cash, will you?
[4:13] Speaker 6: Girl?
[4:13] Speaker 3: I'm a little short. I thought you were going up
[4:16] Speaker 3: there on a commission.
[4:17] Speaker 5: Yes I am, but they have some simple rime one
[4:20] Speaker 5: armed devices and and there goes me commission.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Naturally, a girl has to look right to welcome in
[4:30] Speaker 3: the new year. That gave me the perfect excuse to
[4:33] Speaker 3: squander a few hard earned dollars and cents on some
[4:35] Speaker 3: lovely clothes that didn't make sense but cost dollars. The
[4:39] Speaker 3: afternoon was aging gracefully, a little gray here and a
[4:42] Speaker 3: wrinkle or two there, so I stopped for a parfe
[4:45] Speaker 3: very dry and no olive. With that mission accomplished, I
[4:48] Speaker 3: headed back over Corney Street, and as I wheeled past
[4:51] Speaker 3: Portsmouth Square in the Hall of Justice, I realized I
[4:53] Speaker 3: hadn't seen my chrum Mallard in quite some time. Inspector
[4:57] Speaker 3: Ray Mallard of San Francisco Homicide a very smart cops.
[5:00] Speaker 3: You can smell a clue a mile away when it
[5:03] Speaker 3: comes to me. He very conveniently carries his own fog around.
[5:08] Speaker 7: Well, Candy, my little cupcake, now.
[5:12] Speaker 3: Dear you called me your little cupcake.
[5:15] Speaker 6: Sure still the Christmas season. Let's be charitable. I always say,
[5:19] Speaker 6: what do you always.
[5:19] Speaker 3: Say in a situation like this? Nothing? I just exude
[5:22] Speaker 3: a stream of steams from the top of my head.
[5:25] Speaker 7: Very cute. What brings you around our boarding house?
[5:27] Speaker 3: You darnis. I thought you might like to know I'm
[5:29] Speaker 3: going away for a week.
[5:30] Speaker 7: What did they get you on Pattief?
[5:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, and they got me as I tried to make
[5:34] Speaker 3: my getaway on a triton. But for your information, inspector,
[5:38] Speaker 3: I'm spending my New Year's Eve up in the valley
[5:40] Speaker 3: of the Moon.
[5:40] Speaker 7: Oh want to get away from it all?
[5:42] Speaker 3: That's right you in particular?
[5:44] Speaker 7: In that case, may I get you a midwinter vacation
[5:47] Speaker 7: off to a flying start?
[5:49] Speaker 3: You can try?
[5:50] Speaker 7: How I'm not working tonight? How's about a movie?
[5:52] Speaker 3: You've got yourself at Gate? What's playing?
[5:55] Speaker 7: Bacub?
[5:56] Speaker 3: That's what I thought? Where's text in these faithful hoss
[5:59] Speaker 3: mustard in this time?
[6:00] Speaker 6: I have the plast and the pictures of Pitt too.
[6:04] Speaker 6: I read all about it. Yeah, hot lead over low rato.
[6:08] Speaker 6: Look here's the adam of paper. I can't wait to
[6:10] Speaker 6: assume that a searing epic of the West's wild grandeur
[6:14] Speaker 6: men as rugged as the mountain. We are singing saga,
[6:18] Speaker 6: scorching bullets, strumming guitars and supple senoria, and starring the
[6:23] Speaker 6: champ of the cowboys. Text tacoff, what more can want?
[6:26] Speaker 6: Ask in a motion picture?
[6:28] Speaker 3: Popcorn?
[6:29] Speaker 7: Oh, we'll have that too.
[6:34] Speaker 3: I went home, did some packing for the trip the
[6:36] Speaker 3: next day, picked something to eat, and then changed into
[6:39] Speaker 3: my spurs at Jingle Jangle for tech Tacus Melard ride.
[6:44] Speaker 3: We took off. We got to the early show, so
[6:46] Speaker 3: we managed to get some good feet. Of course, he
[6:48] Speaker 3: wasn't kidding about the popcorn. He got a great big
[6:51] Speaker 3: bag of that. We fumbled our way down the darkened
[6:54] Speaker 3: aisle and found a place to sit. The movie was
[6:56] Speaker 3: almost over.
[6:58] Speaker 7: The thing looked like a gosh to me.
[7:06] Speaker 8: He sere okay, sorry lady, what happened?
[7:18] Speaker 7: You're okay? Oh? Have some popcorn? No I won't.
[7:25] Speaker 3: He was going to be right.
[7:31] Speaker 8: What I said, sure is good popcorn? Oh sure I
[7:38] Speaker 8: don't want some? I said, Are you sure you don't
[7:42] Speaker 8: want some popcorn? I can't saying no, thank you, I
[7:47] Speaker 8: don't want idea.
[7:49] Speaker 9: If you will, pardon me, I'm going home and catch
[7:52] Speaker 9: this on television.
[7:55] Speaker 7: Not understand your.
[8:05] Speaker 3: After hot let over Laredo, I suffered through six reels
[8:09] Speaker 3: of a Bounty College picture. Freshmen looked like holdovers from
[8:12] Speaker 3: the early days of the war. Then a newsreel, then
[8:16] Speaker 3: a cartoon, then the trailer, then again tech Aco. So
[8:21] Speaker 3: we got out about midnight, and I drove Mallard back
[8:23] Speaker 3: to the Hall of Justice. As he got out of
[8:25] Speaker 3: the car, oh oh, now that's what I call sharp dialogue.
[8:32] Speaker 3: On leaving the lady, all he can say.
[8:34] Speaker 6: Is, oh, well, oh, nothing personal, Candy, Now, he laughed
[8:39] Speaker 6: at me. I was just thinking, you're going up to
[8:42] Speaker 6: the Valley of the Moon for a rest, Is that
[8:44] Speaker 6: the idea?
[8:45] Speaker 4: Well?
[8:45] Speaker 3: Yes, that and trying to get away from Techaco.
[8:48] Speaker 7: I know you too well, Candy, you're not going to
[8:51] Speaker 7: have any rest.
[8:53] Speaker 6: Look at the headline on that paper in the news
[8:55] Speaker 6: stand there man missing in Sonoma mystery.
[8:59] Speaker 3: And Nomah can have it. Mallard, Dear, if I so
[9:01] Speaker 3: much as step inside the Sonoma city limits, you can
[9:04] Speaker 3: come and lead me away quietly.
[9:06] Speaker 7: You know something, I'm gonna remember that.
[9:13] Speaker 3: Mallard waved goodbye and went inside. I didn't like the
[9:16] Speaker 3: way he said that, but I had other things to
[9:18] Speaker 3: think about, such as getting home and getting some sleep,
[9:20] Speaker 3: so I did, and in the morning, I drove over
[9:23] Speaker 3: to California Street, picked up Mrant. We headed out across
[9:25] Speaker 3: the Golden Gate bridge up to heard Sonoma. The value
[9:28] Speaker 3: of the moon wasn't too far. A couple of hours
[9:30] Speaker 3: of leisurely driving with time out for readjustments and you're there.
[9:34] Speaker 3: Then another eight miles north and east and there was
[9:37] Speaker 3: the Dude Ranch.
[9:44] Speaker 7: This is it, Diah, what do you think of it?
[9:46] Speaker 3: Perfect? Just perfect? Wait, rem brand dear, it's a real want.
[9:51] Speaker 5: Of course, God would going concern they were going to
[9:53] Speaker 5: take in guests as a sideline. Oh, here comes to man.
[9:56] Speaker 5: I imagine that's mister dottas the owner.
[9:59] Speaker 3: I'll shut off the motor.
[10:00] Speaker 7: Good morning. How do you do sir? Would you mean
[10:02] Speaker 7: mister Lawrence? Per chance? Yes?
[10:04] Speaker 5: And you Watson, Rembrandt Patson, I'm here to take some
[10:07] Speaker 5: pictures for you, as we discussed by the Dell system.
[10:10] Speaker 7: Oh yes, Watson, right on time. That's good.
[10:12] Speaker 5: Oh Candy, I mean I present mister Lawrence, owner of
[10:15] Speaker 5: the Double L. Miss Madson.
[10:17] Speaker 7: I do.
[10:17] Speaker 5: Miss Madson was wondering if she could get accommodations for
[10:19] Speaker 5: about a week.
[10:20] Speaker 7: Mister Loaden what now?
[10:22] Speaker 10: Wait a minute, Watson, I'm paying you a substantial fee
[10:24] Speaker 10: for this job, and I won't get stuck with non
[10:26] Speaker 10: paying guests.
[10:27] Speaker 7: Oh I think you're laboring up.
[10:28] Speaker 3: Miss apprehend Look, mister Laurence, I'm here as a commercial guest.
[10:32] Speaker 3: I'm not asking for anny papers, and I doubt if
[10:34] Speaker 3: i'd stay here now if you got down on your
[10:36] Speaker 3: bended knuckles.
[10:37] Speaker 7: Oh now, wait a second, I didn't mean it just
[10:39] Speaker 7: that way. I apologize.
[10:41] Speaker 10: It's only that well, I've had some tough luck with
[10:43] Speaker 10: people lately who seem to be only too intent on
[10:46] Speaker 10: beating me out of their bills.
[10:48] Speaker 7: Please, Miss Madson, excuse me. I just jumped to conclusions,
[10:51] Speaker 7: that's all.
[10:51] Speaker 3: I think you set a new record for the jump
[10:53] Speaker 3: or forget it, doll do okay, I'm sorry. Do you
[10:57] Speaker 3: have room for me, mister Lauren Why?
[10:59] Speaker 10: Yes, yes, Court a delightful cabin just in the back
[11:02] Speaker 10: of the ranch house. Not being prepared. It'll take about
[11:04] Speaker 10: an hour to get it in shape.
[11:05] Speaker 7: Will that be all right?
[11:06] Speaker 3: Yes? Sure, we can eat in fine, I'll.
[11:08] Speaker 10: Get one of the boys to fetch your luggage. Oh,
[11:10] Speaker 10: you can park over there under the old stables. Oh, no,
[11:13] Speaker 10: garage again, I have to.
[11:15] Speaker 7: Apologize, Miss Madison. The garage is overloaded. Now.
[11:17] Speaker 10: We have a sheriff's posse up here the old of
[11:19] Speaker 10: the ranch next to mine. Disappeared yesterday afternoon. The sheriff
[11:22] Speaker 10: is searching the entire vicinity around here.
[11:26] Speaker 7: By you. All right, Well, speak to me, girl, what
[11:29] Speaker 7: is it?
[11:30] Speaker 3: I'm all right. I just happened to singer of something
[11:32] Speaker 3: Mallard once said. Last night, I pushed my assembled horsepower
[11:40] Speaker 3: into the stables where they belonged, and Rembrandt took me
[11:43] Speaker 3: by the arm and steered me into the ranch house
[11:45] Speaker 3: with a beautiful place, a tall cathedral like living room
[11:48] Speaker 3: with a cracking fireplace about the size of Danny's inferno.
[11:51] Speaker 3: At one end. After this one side of the fireplace
[11:53] Speaker 3: was a cozy little bar. The sun was just going
[11:56] Speaker 3: over the yard arm, so I figured an old fashion
[11:58] Speaker 3: would be quite in order. Was right behind the bar
[12:01] Speaker 3: was the personification of an old fashioned cowboy, real chafs,
[12:06] Speaker 3: leathery face and little squint wrinkles around his eyes. Well,
[12:11] Speaker 3: howdy tick, seems like as if I'd done toll you
[12:14] Speaker 3: in a movie last night.
[12:15] Speaker 11: To yourself, ma'am, Nope, must have been two other cowboys.
[12:18] Speaker 11: I've been working here at the Double L for almost
[12:20] Speaker 11: five years.
[12:21] Speaker 3: My mistake, partner match is the handle. What's yourn?
[12:25] Speaker 7: Is that the way cowboys talk them.
[12:27] Speaker 3: Yeah, Hollywood and Vine Variety. I'm glad to know you
[12:30] Speaker 3: call me Jeff, Miss Matson. This is rem Brant Watson. Jeff,
[12:35] Speaker 3: are those shoulders sewed in?
[12:37] Speaker 7: Are they real? I'm afraid they're real.
[12:39] Speaker 3: Hi, mister Watson, you riding heard? And all those bottles
[12:42] Speaker 3: back there?
[12:42] Speaker 7: Jeff yep.
[12:43] Speaker 11: For better or worse, Chang, our regular bartender took powder
[12:47] Speaker 11: on a day before yesterday.
[12:48] Speaker 3: Oh, seems like he picked a bad time to do
[12:50] Speaker 3: a runout.
[12:51] Speaker 11: Oh you mean the missing jets from Glenn Valley, Glen Dell. Yeah,
[12:55] Speaker 11: that's the ranch next hour. I understand the police are
[12:58] Speaker 11: on the lookout for Chang, but he didn't do it.
[13:01] Speaker 11: He's a good, honest Chinese boy.
[13:02] Speaker 3: Even so, it's a bad time to disappear.
[13:04] Speaker 11: Oh, I admit it doesn't sound good. Well, you folks
[13:08] Speaker 11: won't mind the efforts of an amateur dispenser.
[13:10] Speaker 7: What can I do for it?
[13:11] Speaker 3: In old fashion?
[13:12] Speaker 7: To me? Yet?
[13:12] Speaker 3: Well, I can try from now when I get easier.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Rimbad only want to cook?
[13:17] Speaker 11: Well I can fix that all right. It comes to
[13:21] Speaker 11: the Duchess. The Duchess, yeah, one of our guests. She's
[13:24] Speaker 11: been out here about two weeks, and she can go
[13:27] Speaker 11: through the still spirits faster than a buzz saw through
[13:30] Speaker 11: mushy pie.
[13:31] Speaker 7: And I hope you're prepared to talk. Hello, my dear,
[13:36] Speaker 7: you're just a right haven't you?
[13:39] Speaker 3: Mentally or physically? A sense of humor too? I shall
[13:46] Speaker 3: enjoy your company. Are you staying long? I'm not sure
[13:51] Speaker 3: now my plans are rather indefinite.
[13:54] Speaker 7: Oh you love it?
[13:55] Speaker 3: Here I miss h and may I present to rimbat
[13:59] Speaker 3: wasn't charmed?
[14:00] Speaker 7: I'm sure now has come in?
[14:03] Speaker 9: Oh you delightful lad, Jeff, dear boy, make me just
[14:09] Speaker 9: a little nip for the old favorites?
[14:11] Speaker 11: Will you sure? One pain killer coming up? Here's your
[14:16] Speaker 11: old fashioned miss Madison, mister Watson, your coat? Thanks, young lady.
[14:21] Speaker 11: You must be an actress.
[14:22] Speaker 3: You look like what Noah and I used to be
[14:26] Speaker 3: an actress, A famous one.
[14:28] Speaker 9: I toured all over the continent with the greatest of stars,
[14:32] Speaker 9: the finest of play. I was the toast of London, Berlin, Vienna. Yes,
[14:39] Speaker 9: but I had kings and princess worshiping at my feet.
[14:45] Speaker 9: I was once the vortex of an international incident. But
[14:50] Speaker 9: no matter, those days are gone forever an hour and
[14:54] Speaker 9: here's your what?
[14:58] Speaker 7: Oh thank you? Jeff?
[15:00] Speaker 3: Well, as we used to say, here is to cry?
[15:04] Speaker 9: What was that?
[15:05] Speaker 3: It's a perfect toast. We have quite a mystery in
[15:08] Speaker 3: this part of the country, young lady, And so I
[15:10] Speaker 3: keep hearing.
[15:11] Speaker 9: I can't understand mister Ferguson had everything to live for,
[15:16] Speaker 9: mister Ferguson, the man who owned Glenn Valley, wealthy, good looking,
[15:21] Speaker 9: in the best of health.
[15:23] Speaker 3: You seem to know quite a bit about the gentleman Duchess.
[15:26] Speaker 9: Only what I read in the newspapers, and I can't
[15:29] Speaker 9: understand it well.
[15:32] Speaker 3: As I said, here's to cry. We dealatedt the bar
[15:40] Speaker 3: for a few more moments than Jeffy for me. That
[15:42] Speaker 3: lunch was ready and rembrand and I ate we managed
[15:45] Speaker 3: to duck the Duchess. I don't think I could have
[15:47] Speaker 3: taken her with food. After lunch, Laurence showed me to
[15:50] Speaker 3: my cabin. It was, as he said, delightful, with a
[15:53] Speaker 3: warming flame in the fireplace, with cheery and comfy, and
[15:56] Speaker 3: I felt completely at home. Lawrence left to talk to Rembrandt.
[15:59] Speaker 3: They were going to just the pictures you want to take,
[16:01] Speaker 3: and I felt like going riding, so I changed in
[16:03] Speaker 3: my jeans and started to leave.
[16:05] Speaker 11: But as I did, Oh sorry, Miss Madison. How didn't
[16:09] Speaker 11: mean to frighten you? You did, Jo, I was just
[16:12] Speaker 11: about to knock when you opened the door.
[16:14] Speaker 3: Right, okay? Was there something you wanted?
[16:15] Speaker 7: Or you're in riding clothes? And that answers my question,
[16:18] Speaker 7: the question being or were you going riding?
[16:21] Speaker 1: Is here?
[16:22] Speaker 11: The boss wanted to know if you were going riding,
[16:24] Speaker 11: and if so, did you want some company? I usually
[16:27] Speaker 11: show the guests around the acres. Well, yes, that'd be wonderful,
[16:30] Speaker 11: and uh.
[16:31] Speaker 7: How long do you want to be out, miss Madison?
[16:33] Speaker 3: About three hours or so?
[16:34] Speaker 7: Sure?
[16:35] Speaker 11: In that case, we'll take the deluxe tour over across
[16:38] Speaker 11: the back sixteen enough through Manzanita Canyon. You know, when
[16:41] Speaker 11: we get up to the top of Iron Mountain you
[16:43] Speaker 11: can see the whole valley.
[16:45] Speaker 7: Of the move.
[16:45] Speaker 3: That's for me, Jeff, let's hit the leather. Jeff was
[16:51] Speaker 3: obviously born in the saddle and came into this world
[16:54] Speaker 3: teething on a teather rein you couldn't tell where the
[16:56] Speaker 3: horse left off, and Jeff began a real rider. We
[17:00] Speaker 3: knows that through the clump of branch buildings and on
[17:02] Speaker 3: into open space. I had a fine horse under me,
[17:05] Speaker 3: and I really felt like I was living. They've been
[17:07] Speaker 3: riding about an hour. When we came across the little streams,
[17:10] Speaker 3: Jet indicated we should stop and water the horses. How
[17:18] Speaker 3: long have you been a cowboy, Jeff?
[17:20] Speaker 11: Oh, about as long as I can remember. Around here,
[17:23] Speaker 11: up around Montana that a little bottle little I gradually
[17:27] Speaker 11: drifted further west, hit upon the Valley of the Moon
[17:30] Speaker 11: about five years ago, fell in love with it. I've
[17:33] Speaker 11: ben ever said, reckon, I'll stay here too.
[17:35] Speaker 3: I don't blame you. Excuse me if I seem to
[17:37] Speaker 3: be full of questions, Jeff, that's what I'm here for. Man, good,
[17:40] Speaker 3: because I've got a couple more. What's up that little
[17:43] Speaker 3: draw there on the other side of.
[17:44] Speaker 11: The creek, Nothing but a tangle of man's anita, scrub,
[17:47] Speaker 11: oak and bruck.
[17:48] Speaker 3: Pretty hard to get through there, ahd, it's impossible.
[17:52] Speaker 7: I've seen chipmunks get filed up in that draw. Uh huh.
[17:55] Speaker 3: Then how come those bootprints are going right up there?
[17:57] Speaker 7: Bootprints? I don't see any Well, hey, you're right.
[18:01] Speaker 3: Eat the bootprints for the result of shoes with cuban heels.
[18:04] Speaker 11: Oh, now there's a strange one. What I thought to say,
[18:08] Speaker 11: You know something just dawned on me, Maxon. Didn't I
[18:13] Speaker 11: see your pictures in the fiscal papers a couple of
[18:16] Speaker 11: weeks back?
[18:16] Speaker 3: San Francisco, Big party, San Francisco.
[18:19] Speaker 11: Oh yeah, San Francisco. Excuse me for sure? You know
[18:23] Speaker 11: the way he was asking those questions. Just now it
[18:27] Speaker 11: hit me you're a detective.
[18:29] Speaker 3: I'm afraid you've got me Pardoner.
[18:32] Speaker 7: Wait a minute, miss Matson, listen, it's duck Jeff too late?
[18:36] Speaker 7: Now what wow? Oh there, what are you doing over
[18:42] Speaker 7: this way? Calf Fie boss? You give us quite a
[18:45] Speaker 7: little start. You haven't answered my question.
[18:47] Speaker 11: Oh, we just stopped the wall of the horses, mister Lawrence,
[18:50] Speaker 11: Miss Matson, here's the mighty fine riders. You wanted to
[18:53] Speaker 11: make the big circle of the ring while you certainly
[18:55] Speaker 11: picked up fine time to do it well, Sheriff Puffy
[18:57] Speaker 11: is out around this way.
[18:58] Speaker 7: You're lively. Get shopped now. I'll get back to the
[19:00] Speaker 7: ranch bronto.
[19:01] Speaker 3: Just a moment, mister Lawrence. You've been uncivil ever since
[19:03] Speaker 3: I got here, and I don't like to be dictated too.
[19:06] Speaker 7: It's like being on board ship, Miss Madison. The captain
[19:09] Speaker 7: is the law.
[19:09] Speaker 10: I am the owner of this property, and you'll do
[19:11] Speaker 10: as I say, I'll get moving both of you.
[19:14] Speaker 7: If you don't like my attitude, you can leave any time.
[19:16] Speaker 3: You walk lee now yes, Oh no, mister Laurence. I'm
[19:20] Speaker 3: beginning to find your ranch extremely interesting. Jeff and I
[19:28] Speaker 3: have wheeled our horses about and sifted back to the
[19:30] Speaker 3: ranch house. I looked back a couple of times, but
[19:32] Speaker 3: there was no sign of Lawrence. I was mad, and
[19:35] Speaker 3: Jeff must have sensed it, because he was smart enough
[19:37] Speaker 3: to keep his mouth closed. As I dismounted at the
[19:39] Speaker 3: stables and headed for the house, he waved me for
[19:41] Speaker 3: Laura audious and disappeared. Just as I went through the door,
[19:44] Speaker 3: I was greeted by Rembrandt.
[19:46] Speaker 7: Oh, there you are. I was about to institute a
[19:49] Speaker 7: searching party for you.
[19:50] Speaker 9: Oh.
[19:50] Speaker 3: I was safe enough until I gained the grips with
[19:52] Speaker 3: a thing called my own temper. Have you been doing, ducky,
[19:56] Speaker 3: I've had a most good, lightful afternoon, Canadia. I've been
[19:58] Speaker 3: playing Canas with the can answer. Oh, you don't know
[20:02] Speaker 3: how to play can As.
[20:03] Speaker 5: I know that and you know it, but I don't
[20:05] Speaker 5: think the Duchess does. She celebrated each hair and put
[20:08] Speaker 5: a hefty pull on her bitchos why do you manage
[20:11] Speaker 5: to make any sense out of the game? But has
[20:13] Speaker 5: me puzzled too. All I do is put down some cars,
[20:17] Speaker 5: any cars, and she'd congratulate me.
[20:19] Speaker 3: Maybe you've got a green thumb for the game. Incidentally,
[20:22] Speaker 3: I thought you were going to be taking pictures. This
[20:24] Speaker 3: afternoon call.
[20:25] Speaker 5: Off on account of the law mister Lawrence had to
[20:28] Speaker 5: ride out into the Lone Carrie and deliver the phone
[20:30] Speaker 5: message to the sheriff. He's making like ghost riders in
[20:33] Speaker 5: the sky. Help there, do go and change deer and
[20:37] Speaker 5: the smell of horses. Yes, I know, and incidentally we
[20:42] Speaker 5: do have a soave ree. This evening, two more guests arrived,
[20:45] Speaker 5: the cook tails and you have to be a little
[20:46] Speaker 5: entertainment after dinner.
[20:48] Speaker 3: Good around here, anything will be an improvement. I didn't
[20:54] Speaker 3: tell Rambretta I was going to change, so it wasn't
[20:56] Speaker 3: a tip. When I stayed in my genes, I went
[20:58] Speaker 3: back to the stables, got the board, rig me another horse,
[21:00] Speaker 3: and headed out toward that creek again. I wrote best
[21:03] Speaker 3: at this time because I noticed something else there besides
[21:05] Speaker 3: the bootprints. It was a battered ten gallon hat on
[21:08] Speaker 3: the far side of the creek. With studded initials JF
[21:10] Speaker 3: on the crown. But when I got there, the cupboard
[21:14] Speaker 3: was bare but good. Not only was the ten gallon
[21:17] Speaker 3: hat gone, but the bootprints had been completely obliterated. I
[21:22] Speaker 3: stayed for another few minutes to study and frustration, and
[21:25] Speaker 3: then went back to the ranch. I changed, met Rembrandt,
[21:28] Speaker 3: had dinner, and then we relaxed in the living room.
[21:31] Speaker 7: Oh, Dove, I'm sorry ful. This outdoor living makes me
[21:37] Speaker 7: ravenous outdoors.
[21:39] Speaker 3: I don't think you've stepped out of this building since
[21:41] Speaker 3: we got here. Well, then it's the fault of outdoor
[21:43] Speaker 3: living that does it. Oh, they are the new arrivals,
[21:46] Speaker 3: a lot of fire. Did you meet them?
[21:48] Speaker 5: No, they looked at me as though I might soil
[21:51] Speaker 5: that escutcheon, whatever that is. I can see what you mean.
[21:55] Speaker 7: Boat.
[21:56] Speaker 11: Enjoy your dinner, Oh, hello, Jeff, Yes, it was wonderful.
[21:59] Speaker 11: Does anybody say mister Lawrence or the Duchess.
[22:02] Speaker 3: We haven't seen Lawrence. No, the Duchess is over there
[22:04] Speaker 3: writing a letter.
[22:06] Speaker 11: Well, I hope you'll all drop around about an hour.
[22:09] Speaker 11: I'm going to do some singing and a little guitar plucking.
[22:11] Speaker 11: Is there anything you don't do?
[22:13] Speaker 3: Jeff?
[22:13] Speaker 7: No, very little, but none of them too during good either.
[22:16] Speaker 3: Sure we'll be here, won't we brand Well?
[22:20] Speaker 7: I asked, I go with three diamonds and a joke car.
[22:26] Speaker 3: Jeff left Rembrandt snoozed, and I threw a wrap around
[22:29] Speaker 3: my shoulders and took a stroll around the patio. The
[22:31] Speaker 3: air felt good. I went over to my cabin and
[22:33] Speaker 3: picked up some cigarettes and started back. But as I
[22:36] Speaker 3: came close to the cabin opposite mine, it was the duchess.
[22:43] Speaker 3: I recognize those tones and groans anywhere, duchess, this is
[22:50] Speaker 3: candy mats.
[22:52] Speaker 7: Are you all right?
[22:53] Speaker 9: Pees, I'm all right, Dutch? You indigestion? I should imagine?
[22:58] Speaker 3: Is there anything I can do? Can I get you something?
[23:01] Speaker 9: Oh?
[23:01] Speaker 7: What a dear think you are?
[23:03] Speaker 9: You know I'll be all right. I have these attacks
[23:06] Speaker 9: all the time. You run along and enjoy yourself. Jeff
[23:11] Speaker 9: is going to sing. It's such a dear boy. But
[23:14] Speaker 9: you're sure you'll be okay, Yes, yes, dear, go along.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Oh here, let me put a blanket over your hair
[23:23] Speaker 3: and take off your shoes.
[23:28] Speaker 9: You'll be up so much more comfortable. We're so sweet,
[23:32] Speaker 9: so pretty. It remind me of myself when I was young,
[23:38] Speaker 9: thank you, Thank you so much.
[23:45] Speaker 3: I tupped the old girl in and left to the
[23:47] Speaker 3: dreams of the past and went back to the ranch house.
[23:51] Speaker 3: Jeff was just pulling up a chair in front of
[23:53] Speaker 3: the fireplace.
[23:55] Speaker 11: I have to understand, folks, I'm not a singer. I
[23:58] Speaker 11: don't pretend to be warble along the way I feel.
[24:02] Speaker 3: Now.
[24:02] Speaker 7: Is there any particular kind of cowboy tune you'd like
[24:04] Speaker 7: to hear?
[24:05] Speaker 3: No, yeah, I'm just seeing a favorite good idea. Just
[24:09] Speaker 3: do what comes naturally.
[24:10] Speaker 7: Okay, you asked, Let's see, here's what I think you
[24:13] Speaker 7: might like. Oh, Ery mean, no, am very square.
[24:26] Speaker 8: The guy.
[24:33] Speaker 7: Blows on the green just by three. But beer, oh
[24:48] Speaker 7: hi you bo oh. I'm sorry, Jeff go, I don't
[24:51] Speaker 7: know what you were doing.
[24:53] Speaker 3: No, mister Lawrence, you arrived just in time the entertainment silver.
[24:57] Speaker 7: What what are you talking about? This matter?
[24:59] Speaker 3: I I said, the show is over. Take the sheriff around.
[25:02] Speaker 7: Yese and his men are outside. They're just leaving for
[25:05] Speaker 7: the night.
[25:05] Speaker 3: You better call him back right now. The duchess is
[25:08] Speaker 3: dead in her cabin, poisonous.
[25:11] Speaker 7: Wait a minute, sheriff. Sheriff hop, that's right. Can you
[25:18] Speaker 7: and your men come back for a fell seems we
[25:21] Speaker 7: have more trouble. Okay, over, so we tie off. So horse, Now,
[25:26] Speaker 7: then what's this all about? Well?
[25:28] Speaker 3: I could tell you, Lawrence, but I think it'd be
[25:30] Speaker 3: more proper coming from the Star himself, don't you think so?
[25:34] Speaker 11: Jeff looks like this is it, doesn't it? You know
[25:39] Speaker 11: you're smart, missus Mathson. Like they say in that ad,
[25:42] Speaker 11: never underestimate the power of a woman.
[25:45] Speaker 3: That's right. That letter the Duchess wrote proves your point.
[25:48] Speaker 7: What how do you get hold of that letter? I
[25:51] Speaker 7: thought that? Oh she wrote a duplicate?
[25:55] Speaker 9: Is that?
[25:56] Speaker 3: Like you say, never underestimate the power of a woman.
[25:59] Speaker 11: Wait a moment, I don't understand what's going on here.
[26:02] Speaker 11: Go ahead, miss Mason. You tell looks like I'm not
[26:05] Speaker 11: the star any longer.
[26:06] Speaker 3: Well, it's up to about two weeks ago. You had
[26:08] Speaker 3: as nice and gentle a cow folk working for you
[26:10] Speaker 3: as there ever was. Then the Duchess arrived. She wasn't
[26:14] Speaker 3: kidding when she claimed to have mingled with nobility important people.
[26:17] Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, she had an inside tip
[26:19] Speaker 3: about your ranch and the one next door of Ferguson's face,
[26:22] Speaker 3: Glenn Belly, didn't you receive a fantastic offer for your
[26:25] Speaker 3: property from a big wine company just recently.
[26:27] Speaker 7: Learned why, Yes, I did, so did Ferguson.
[26:31] Speaker 3: They were going to merge the two places and make
[26:33] Speaker 3: it one of the world's largest venues.
[26:35] Speaker 7: I didn't know about that part of it.
[26:37] Speaker 3: But that just did. She wanted in on the ground floor.
[26:40] Speaker 3: That's why she came out here. She tried to talk
[26:43] Speaker 3: business with Ferguson, but he'd have none of it. So
[26:45] Speaker 3: in one of her boozy moments, she hit upon the
[26:47] Speaker 3: idea of doing away with Ferguson, but she didn't have
[26:50] Speaker 3: the nerve to go through with it. That's when she
[26:52] Speaker 3: approached Jeff here and cut him in on the deal.
[26:55] Speaker 3: Jeff was tired of the poor but honest cowboy routine,
[26:57] Speaker 3: saw a chance to make some heavy sugar and went
[26:59] Speaker 3: along the gag.
[27:01] Speaker 7: Right, Jeff, she's got it straight so far, boss. Yeah,
[27:06] Speaker 7: I can't believe my ears.
[27:08] Speaker 3: Oh that's nothing. Just wait a while. Jeff and the
[27:11] Speaker 3: Duchess were out riding one afternoon when by chance, Ferguson
[27:14] Speaker 3: rode up too, just where the boundaries of the two
[27:16] Speaker 3: ranches meet. While the Duchess talked to Ferguson, Jeff sneaks
[27:19] Speaker 3: around and back and bashed in his head. They hold
[27:22] Speaker 3: him up to that braw where you bumped into us
[27:24] Speaker 3: this afternoon. I know now why you ordered it out
[27:27] Speaker 3: of there. On the other side of that snarl of
[27:29] Speaker 3: brush and manzanita, there's a quick sand pitch that is
[27:32] Speaker 3: now Ferguson's permanent residence.
[27:35] Speaker 7: This is terrible, terrible.
[27:37] Speaker 3: In a hurry to dispose of your late neighbor, they
[27:40] Speaker 3: left shoeprints along the bank of the creek, and they
[27:42] Speaker 3: also overlooked Ferguson's hat with his initials on it. I'm
[27:46] Speaker 3: mighty glad you came by when you did, law after
[27:50] Speaker 3: I had noticed the bootprints. I think Jeff is going
[27:53] Speaker 3: to dump me into the quicksand tool.
[27:57] Speaker 11: After the boss sent us back in. I sort of
[27:59] Speaker 11: figure to get you in step.
[28:01] Speaker 3: And then, Lawrence, you were going to be mixed because
[28:04] Speaker 3: in your will you would name Jeff as your soul.
[28:07] Speaker 10: There is that, right, That's right, Hi, I loved him
[28:12] Speaker 10: like a son.
[28:12] Speaker 3: Then the Duchess and Jeff could have swung a hard
[28:14] Speaker 3: bargain with that wine outfit. All very smooth, except for
[28:18] Speaker 3: one thing.
[28:19] Speaker 11: One thing I'm kind of curious about that one thing,
[28:22] Speaker 11: miss Mathison.
[28:23] Speaker 3: Alcohol, Jeff. It's not only lifting to begin with, but
[28:26] Speaker 3: also acts as a depressing agent. The duchess had been
[28:30] Speaker 3: inviting all day, and after dinner she arrived at that
[28:32] Speaker 3: point of depression, realized what a horrible thing she had done,
[28:35] Speaker 3: and she wrote the full story about the wine company
[28:38] Speaker 3: and Jeff's eupiicipity and made a copy. You were afraid
[28:42] Speaker 3: of that yourself, Jeff. That's when you went out and
[28:44] Speaker 3: slipped the old girl a lethal mickey. I heard her
[28:47] Speaker 3: groaning and went into investigate. She said it was indigestion,
[28:50] Speaker 3: but I knew differently her bread, and I knew too
[28:54] Speaker 3: that she'd be dead within five minutes. Then I saw
[28:57] Speaker 3: her shoes, cuban heels with much caked on the inner
[29:00] Speaker 3: side of the arch. That's when I had to hunch.
[29:03] Speaker 3: The letter she was writing had a definite meaning. You
[29:06] Speaker 3: overlooked it, you. I found it where only a woman
[29:10] Speaker 3: would think of looking tucked inside her bosom. Sure, I'm sorry, Laurie,
[29:18] Speaker 3: I had you figured wrong from the start. I was
[29:20] Speaker 3: the one who was wrong. You aren't hard at all.
[29:23] Speaker 3: Your softest price, Well, Jess, take to the sheriff.
[29:30] Speaker 11: Yeah, so I see well, I'm ready for him. You
[29:34] Speaker 11: can't beat the royal flush with a pair of deuces her.
[29:37] Speaker 11: Should I say dune it I go, there won't be
[29:39] Speaker 11: any fun, And all of a sudden the dawns on me.
[29:43] Speaker 11: People should accept their life. You're going to be a cowboy,
[29:46] Speaker 11: just stay a cowboy. And if you're born a millionaire,
[29:49] Speaker 11: don't fight that either. For the bimus matter, and I'm
[29:54] Speaker 11: glad the boss happened along when he did. I don't
[29:57] Speaker 11: think Quickstandard looked good on.
[30:05] Speaker 3: Like Jeff said, he went quietly, no trouble, too bad.
[30:09] Speaker 3: He wasn't content to be just a ranch hand, simple
[30:11] Speaker 3: and unspoiled because his run Brad had noticed. He did
[30:14] Speaker 3: have wonderful shoulders. He played the guitar, he sang, and
[30:17] Speaker 3: he made fine old fashions. All in all a very
[30:20] Speaker 3: nice guy, except for two voices hitting from the behind
[30:23] Speaker 3: and poisoning.
[30:25] Speaker 9: The valley of Moon.
[30:26] Speaker 3: Oh, I'll go back. It's lovely, after all. One man
[30:30] Speaker 3: with a snarl brain can't undo the work of the
[30:32] Speaker 3: original master painter.
[30:38] Speaker 7: Listen again next week at this same time for excitement
[30:41] Speaker 7: and adventure.
[30:42] Speaker 3: Just dial Candy Madson. You come two A two o.
[30:45] Speaker 4: Nine heard tonight were Helen Fleeve as the Duchess, Louethoven
[30:58] Speaker 4: as Lawrence and Climecy, Jeff Henry Left is Inspector Mallard,
[31:03] Speaker 4: and Jack Thomas's Rembrandt. The program stars Natalie Masters as
[31:07] Speaker 4: Candy and is written and produced by Multi Masters. Sound
[31:10] Speaker 4: effects were created by Bill Brownell and Jay Rendon. Eloise
[31:14] Speaker 4: Rowan is heard at the organ. The characters in Tonight's
[31:17] Speaker 4: story are entirely fictitious, and any resemblance to actual people
[31:22] Speaker 4: is purely coincidental. The program came to you from San Francisco,
[31:28] Speaker 4: Dudley Man Love Speaking. You are tuned for the Stars
[31:40] Speaker 4: on NBC.
[31:48] Speaker 2: Welcome back, Well the Singer. Seventeenth is an odd air
[31:52] Speaker 2: date for a New Year's episode, but that is what
[31:58] Speaker 2: he has been verified through Digital Belly, so we'll go
[32:01] Speaker 2: with that. I think one challenge with Candy Mattson and
[32:05] Speaker 2: being timely in terms of the airing episodes was the
[32:11] Speaker 2: show was always constantly being shuffled about, as we talked
[32:16] Speaker 2: about a few weeks back, so it could be that
[32:22] Speaker 2: the episode was intended to be aired later, but just
[32:27] Speaker 2: because of all the shuffling around, they just wanted to
[32:30] Speaker 2: keep the scripts in order. Actually toyed with using this
[32:36] Speaker 2: using the part where she annoyingly says San Francisco when
[32:45] Speaker 2: Jeff says Frisco in the intro to the show. I thought,
[32:50] Speaker 2: I would, you know, jokingly say Frisco and then show
[32:53] Speaker 2: her play her annoyed response of San Francisco. But she
[33:01] Speaker 2: wasn't as annoyed as I remembered when it came time
[33:04] Speaker 2: to recorded, so I didn't opt for that particular.
[33:09] Speaker 7: Joke.
[33:11] Speaker 2: This was a pretty fun episode as usual. It didn't
[33:15] Speaker 2: take itself, you know, incredibly seriously, but it did have
[33:22] Speaker 2: a kind of a message in the end about I like,
[33:29] Speaker 2: particularly the last line about the Valley of the moon.
[33:34] Speaker 2: So this was another just fun mystery with Kenan Manson. Well,
[33:39] Speaker 2: now we turned the listener comments from my podcast Alley
