[4:21] Speaker 2: Has been coming too fast.
[4:22] Speaker 5: Let you know, he's still setting pins down there at

[4:31] Speaker 2: Alley's changing over to those automatic machines. You know, quite
[4:34] Speaker 2: a few guys out Elijah. Machines can set pins better

[5:07] Speaker 5: Yeah, it's fine, ring a couple of those jelly donuts,
[5:09] Speaker 5: could you okay?
[5:10] Speaker 6: All right? What's the story Dave? When you were here?
[5:14] Speaker 2: I heard about it last night right after I left
[5:16] Speaker 2: the alley. He told me to keep my ears up,
[5:18] Speaker 2: you know, yeah, said, you figured it might be something
[5:20] Speaker 2: on that new bunch hanging around a bar down from
[5:22] Speaker 2: the alleys. You figured they might tie in with a
[5:24] Speaker 2: new bunch of high.
[5:24] Speaker 7: Rollers in time.
[5:25] Speaker 6: Yeah, what'd you pick up?
[5:27] Speaker 7: I think you figured right from what I heard. Anyway,
[5:29] Speaker 7: here you go, how don't do? Oh?
[5:31] Speaker 6: Yeah?
[5:32] Speaker 7: Thanks?
[5:32] Speaker 2: You make a fine waiter lock with thanks.
[5:34] Speaker 7: We don't get a lead. Pretty soon I may have
[5:36] Speaker 7: to take it up.
[5:36] Speaker 5: Dave was just telling me that he figures he might
[5:38] Speaker 5: have something for us. He picked it up with the
[5:40] Speaker 5: spot down from the alleys last night.
[5:41] Speaker 2: Well, like I said, after I was through at the alleys,
[5:43] Speaker 2: I stopped by the place and I had a couple
[5:45] Speaker 2: of beers. Can't afford anything else, A few nickelas they'd
[5:47] Speaker 2: pay me lucky to get enough to eat.
[5:49] Speaker 6: The way things are going, Yeah, it's pretty rough.
[5:51] Speaker 5: I know.
[5:51] Speaker 6: Well, what's the pitcher got? Dave?
[5:53] Speaker 2: While I was sitting there having a beer and a
[5:55] Speaker 2: couple of those new faces were sitting next to me,
[5:56] Speaker 2: So I put my ear out tried to pick up
[5:58] Speaker 2: some of the tall.
[5:59] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[6:00] Speaker 2: I couldn't get all of it, but I did get
[6:01] Speaker 2: enough to make out there's gonna be a big game tonight.
[6:03] Speaker 2: From what I could get, there's gonna be a lot
[6:05] Speaker 2: of scratch floating.
[6:06] Speaker 7: Now you hear what's gonna be there?
[6:07] Speaker 2: I had to play it careful.
[6:08] Speaker 7: You know it couldn't be two nots.
[6:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, I uh said, and had another beer in
[6:13] Speaker 2: one of this new monks. Heard the other guy call
[6:14] Speaker 2: him Mike. I think he has the bartender for change
[6:17] Speaker 2: to make a phone call. He got the change, went over.
[6:18] Speaker 7: The wall phone.
[6:19] Speaker 2: I got up and drifted over that way and made
[6:21] Speaker 2: out like I was watching the shuffle board. I caught
[6:24] Speaker 2: some of the tall.
[6:25] Speaker 6: Now what was that?
[6:26] Speaker 2: Well, he was talking about some big game tonight. I
[6:28] Speaker 2: heard him say the guy in the other end not
[6:30] Speaker 2: to show up.
[6:30] Speaker 5: Before eleven thirty could get an address.
[6:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, he said he'd be back of an empty store
[6:35] Speaker 2: building down on Gibbons Avenue, and you get the number
[6:38] Speaker 2: nine one two two.
[6:39] Speaker 6: What was that again? Nine one two yeah, Gibbons.
[6:43] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty sure. As soon as I got out
[6:44] Speaker 2: of the place, I wrote it down. Whin I got
[6:47] Speaker 2: let's see, yeah, nine one two two Gibbons.
[6:51] Speaker 6: Yeah, that's see.
[6:52] Speaker 5: Now, this fellow that made the phone call, you say
[6:54] Speaker 5: his name was Mike, Is that right?
[6:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I heard his partner call him. He's
[6:57] Speaker 2: kind of a short guy, like thirty five, I've been
[7:00] Speaker 2: six on the fat side, black hair.
[7:02] Speaker 7: Mike Filmer.
[7:03] Speaker 2: No, yeah, we kind of knowing him, thought he might
[7:05] Speaker 2: figure in.
[7:05] Speaker 6: I'm not about the size of a day. That all
[7:07] Speaker 6: you heard.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's about it.
[7:09] Speaker 6: Friday.
[7:10] Speaker 2: As soon as he finished the phone, car and his
[7:11] Speaker 2: partner left, I finished my beer.
[7:13] Speaker 6: And left too.
[7:13] Speaker 2: I had to couldn't ford another one.
[7:15] Speaker 6: Really tough these days.
[7:16] Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, thanks a lot, Dave, really appreciate it. Well,
[7:18] Speaker 2: don't mention it. You've always done all right by me,
[7:21] Speaker 2: though not sure. Tasted great, still hungry, but I feel
[7:25] Speaker 2: I could take on a three inch stick.
[7:27] Speaker 6: I'm sorry things aren't better for you, Dave. How about
[7:31] Speaker 6: a ten Spottle that helped you.
[7:32] Speaker 2: In Yeah, sure, will Friddy, thanks a lot. I really
[7:35] Speaker 2: can use it.
[7:35] Speaker 6: I'm glad to help you. You're always helping us.
[7:38] Speaker 2: You sure make it nice. I mean you make it nice.
[7:40] Speaker 2: Kneasy on, I guy, what do you mean? Well, it's
[7:42] Speaker 2: always there first. I never have to come right out
[7:44] Speaker 2: and as good though. You always get the pitch, don't you.
[7:53] Speaker 5: Almost a month before we had begun receiving complaints about
[7:56] Speaker 5: a newly established gambling ring which had set up operations
[7:59] Speaker 5: in the city. Of the first few complaints, we succeeded
[8:01] Speaker 5: in identifying some of the men involved in the ring,
[8:04] Speaker 5: and also some of the places they frequented. The nature
[8:06] Speaker 5: of most of the complaints against them was such that
[8:08] Speaker 5: we knew we were dealing with a well.
[8:10] Speaker 6: Organized criminal element.
[8:12] Speaker 5: Even if a player happened to win at one of
[8:13] Speaker 5: the games, after he left the location.
[8:15] Speaker 6: He was beaten and robbed.
[8:17] Speaker 5: Despite the fact that we had some of the suspects identified,
[8:20] Speaker 5: we still lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute them successfully. The
[8:24] Speaker 5: various victims either would not or could not identify the suspects.
[8:28] Speaker 5: We knew the gang was running three or four games
[8:30] Speaker 5: a week, each one of them at a different location,
[8:32] Speaker 5: each one of them at a different time. In the trade,
[8:35] Speaker 5: that's known as a floating game. After we left our informant,
[8:38] Speaker 5: Dave Carter, we headed back to the office and briefed
[8:40] Speaker 5: Lieutenant Bingham. That afternoon, we checked the address on Gibbons
[8:43] Speaker 5: Avenue and found it to be a vacant store building
[8:45] Speaker 5: with a Florent sign in the window. There was an
[8:48] Speaker 5: entrance in front and one in the rear, windows along
[8:51] Speaker 5: both sides of the building, and a plasterboard partition dividing
[8:53] Speaker 5: the inside of the.
[8:54] Speaker 6: Store into two parts. The place was deserted.
[8:57] Speaker 5: At ten o'clock that night, Bill Lockwood and izedaked out
[9:00] Speaker 5: in our car down the street from the store. Sergeant
[9:02] Speaker 5: Fred Taylor and Jack Matthews were staked out in their
[9:05] Speaker 5: car from another point of observation. We were in constant
[9:08] Speaker 5: touch with each other by three way radio. Ten thirty
[9:11] Speaker 5: eleven PM, eleven.
[9:13] Speaker 7: Thirty one K eighty seven to one K.
[9:18] Speaker 5: Eighty Come in, one K to one K eighty seven,
[9:20] Speaker 5: Go ahead, Joe.
[9:21] Speaker 7: Did you notice the lights come on on the back
[9:23] Speaker 7: of the store a minute ago?
[9:24] Speaker 6: Yeah, two men.
[9:25] Speaker 5: They went in the back way, parked their car just
[9:27] Speaker 5: down the street from us here.
[9:28] Speaker 6: Did you see anything else?
[9:30] Speaker 3: Car just pulled up down the street from us.
[9:32] Speaker 7: Two men getting out heading for the store. Shoe just
[9:34] Speaker 7: a minute.
[9:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, they're going that way.
[9:37] Speaker 2: Yeah, I see they're going around the back.
[9:39] Speaker 4: Joe.
[9:40] Speaker 7: Uh, looks like it's going to pay off. Let's sit
[9:42] Speaker 7: on in a while. KMA three sixty seven.
[9:47] Speaker 6: We waited. Eleven forty five.
[9:49] Speaker 5: A blue pickup truck pulled up and stopped a short
[9:51] Speaker 5: way from the front entrance to the store. We saw
[9:54] Speaker 5: two men get out and go around to the back
[9:56] Speaker 5: of the truck and unload half a dozen large boxes,
[9:58] Speaker 5: which they carried around to the rear entrance of the
[10:00] Speaker 5: One of the men came back, got in the cab
[10:02] Speaker 5: with a truck, and sat there.
[10:04] Speaker 6: Midnight twelve fifteen am.
[10:07] Speaker 5: Over a period of half an hour, we watched eighteen
[10:09] Speaker 5: persons arrive from different directions and enter the store from
[10:11] Speaker 5: the rear. Twelve thirty one am. There were no new arrivals.
[10:16] Speaker 7: We waited one K eighty seven to one K eight.
[10:19] Speaker 6: Come in, one K eighty to one K eighty seven.
[10:22] Speaker 6: Go ahead.
[10:23] Speaker 2: Not much activity down here, Joe, looks like it pretty
[10:25] Speaker 2: well set.
[10:26] Speaker 5: What do you think, Yeah, I think we might as
[10:28] Speaker 5: well hit it same way we laid it out.
[10:30] Speaker 6: Huh.
[10:30] Speaker 5: Fred will wait until Matthews picks up the lookout a
[10:33] Speaker 5: man sitting in the truck, right.
[10:35] Speaker 8: Joe, Jack, you want to go ahead and drab and
[10:37] Speaker 8: go away.
[10:41] Speaker 7: He's got his way, Joe.
[10:43] Speaker 5: Okay, as soon as he picks him up, we meet
[10:45] Speaker 5: in front of the place, Bill and I'll take the front.
[10:47] Speaker 6: You cover the back.
[10:48] Speaker 7: You got that, okay, Joe? Oh hold on a minute,
[10:51] Speaker 7: will you?
[10:53] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[10:53] Speaker 7: Jack got him bringing him back to the car.
[10:55] Speaker 6: Okay, let's go Cama three to sixty seven. He got
[10:59] Speaker 6: the carking Bill, Yeah, what's going for.
[11:05] Speaker 1: You?
[11:06] Speaker 2: Figured that's the best way.
[11:06] Speaker 7: Joe too, was going in the front.
[11:08] Speaker 6: That's probably where the rush is gonna be.
[11:09] Speaker 5: When Fred goes through the back, they're sure to start
[11:11] Speaker 5: for the front.
[11:13] Speaker 8: Okay, Joe, Yeah, and Jack's got the lookout, narkill wait
[11:15] Speaker 8: for us a right now?
[11:16] Speaker 6: What do you think about this? Fred?
[11:17] Speaker 5: You go around and hit the back door, so as
[11:19] Speaker 5: they hear you inside, they'll probably start for the front.
[11:21] Speaker 6: We'll take care of him there.
[11:22] Speaker 7: It's a good idea. Give me half a minute to
[11:24] Speaker 7: get back there.
[11:24] Speaker 5: All right, to watch yourself, all right, Joe, let's go.
[11:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they're still going ys to us.
[11:36] Speaker 5: Yeah, let's hold it right down, please, we're going to
[11:38] Speaker 5: rest now, all right there, come on, billets in it.
[11:44] Speaker 2: Shot Joe, come on, well, I can please off this.
[11:48] Speaker 2: Come on back against the wall, going out.
[11:50] Speaker 5: The windows, show bight, Brett, let's think. Get back against the.
[11:53] Speaker 2: Wall all here, alright, off over you get back to
[11:55] Speaker 2: what happen to read?
[11:55] Speaker 7: Right?

[11:58] Speaker 6: against the wall, all right.
[11:59] Speaker 2: I'm going.
[12:00] Speaker 7: What's the beef about?
[12:01] Speaker 2: Anyway?
[12:01] Speaker 8: Just a turn around.
[12:02] Speaker 5: Facing the wall, puts your hands against the wall.
[12:04] Speaker 7: What's the pitch anyway? Treat this like a bunch of thieves.
[12:06] Speaker 7: You just have a little fun.
[12:07] Speaker 6: No harm done, Joe, as you find Fred, what happened?
[12:09] Speaker 6: He's been shot?
[12:10] Speaker 1: Hurt bad?
[12:10] Speaker 7: Matthews in with him now, I'll call the ambulance. Get
[12:12] Speaker 7: some help on it.
[12:13] Speaker 2: All right, you too, and with the others back against
[12:15] Speaker 2: what's your beef? Sure? A big noise about nothing. We're
[12:18] Speaker 2: to play a little cars friendly games, just a dollar limit.
[12:20] Speaker 2: Nobody ever gets hurt. We're all friends.
[12:22] Speaker 5: Is that why you carry guns? One am the ambulance
[12:29] Speaker 5: arrived and Sergeant Fred Taylor was taken immediately to Georgia
[12:32] Speaker 5: Street Receiving Hospital in a critical condition. He'd been shot
[12:35] Speaker 5: twice through the upper portion of the chest. He'd been
[12:38] Speaker 5: unconscious from the time of the shooting. Who the assailant was.
[12:41] Speaker 5: We had no idea. The crime lab arrived at the
[12:43] Speaker 5: scene and began their preliminary investigation. Meantime, homicide officers had
[12:48] Speaker 5: arrived and all units in the area were assisting in
[12:50] Speaker 5: the investigation, making a house to house canvas and checking
[12:53] Speaker 5: all backyards, alleys, and unoccupied buildings for possible suspects in hiding.
[12:58] Speaker 5: Out of a total number of men president in the
[13:00] Speaker 5: store at the time of the shooting, Bill and I had.
[13:02] Speaker 6: Been able to detain nine of them.
[13:04] Speaker 5: The remainder had either scrambled outside windows or the rear
[13:07] Speaker 5: door and then apparently made their way over back fences.
[13:10] Speaker 5: The nine we did get were taken downtown for interrogation.
[13:14] Speaker 5: All of them had been searched, but no weapons had
[13:16] Speaker 5: been found. Bill Lockwood and I remained at the scene
[13:18] Speaker 5: assisting the homicide officers. Two five AM an additional four
[13:22] Speaker 5: men who had been present at the gambling game that
[13:24] Speaker 5: night were picked up in the area transported downtown and
[13:27] Speaker 5: held along with the other nine at homicide detail two
[13:30] Speaker 5: twenty am. Bill and I were called downtown to assist
[13:33] Speaker 5: in the questioning. We got nowhere where the first three
[13:36] Speaker 5: suspects was the same with the fourth.
[13:38] Speaker 2: Do you expect us to believe that, Mike, Well, that's
[13:40] Speaker 2: the truth out of anything about it now.
[13:41] Speaker 6: I looked like, let's put it on the table. Huh.
[13:43] Speaker 5: We listened to your line of chattered down at the
[13:44] Speaker 5: store when we made the pinch.
[13:45] Speaker 6: We heard it all. Now let's get out of fact.
[13:46] Speaker 2: I told you everything I know, no different than the
[13:48] Speaker 2: other guys you picked up. I heard there was going
[13:50] Speaker 2: to be a game tonight, so I came.
[13:51] Speaker 6: What did you come down with? How'd you get there?
[13:52] Speaker 2: I drove, came by myself.
[13:54] Speaker 7: Where'd you park your car? About two blocks away? A
[13:55] Speaker 7: little aallely there by.
[13:56] Speaker 6: Guess day, you're a liar, mister, and you know it. Well,
[13:58] Speaker 6: that's the truth, So help me.
[13:59] Speaker 2: If I knew there was it's going to be trouble,
[14:00] Speaker 2: wouldn't even have showed up. I play a few cards, sure,
[14:02] Speaker 2: I don't go in for every stuff, though I haven't
[14:04] Speaker 2: got anything to do with the game.
[14:05] Speaker 7: You're a liar, You can't say that.
[14:07] Speaker 2: Now you show me where I've lied. You tell me
[14:09] Speaker 2: we were stick out on that place tonight.
[14:10] Speaker 5: Mike.
[14:10] Speaker 6: It was a little past eleven forty five.
[14:12] Speaker 3: You drove up in a blue pickup truck.
[14:13] Speaker 7: Another man was with you.
[14:14] Speaker 6: You were driving.
[14:15] Speaker 7: Oh, no, you got it wrong.
[14:15] Speaker 5: No, we haven't got it wrong. You parked that truck
[14:17] Speaker 5: about ten yards down the street from the front of
[14:19] Speaker 5: the store. You got out first, the other man followed you.
[14:21] Speaker 5: You unloaded six large cartons from the truck, some of
[14:23] Speaker 5: the equipment we found on the store. You took it around,
[14:25] Speaker 5: backing into the rear door, didn't you.
[14:26] Speaker 2: You got it wrong. It wasn't me.
[14:27] Speaker 7: It couldn't have been me. Come off with Mike.
[14:29] Speaker 8: The man you were with, we've got him down the hall.
[14:30] Speaker 8: The other officers have talked to him. He gave him
[14:32] Speaker 8: the straight story.
[14:32] Speaker 2: I didn't come with any other guy. Now, when you
[14:34] Speaker 2: listen to me, I knew some of them there. I'll
[14:36] Speaker 2: admit that I came by mysel.
[14:37] Speaker 5: Listen to me, mister, You get this through your head.
[14:39] Speaker 5: Get it once and for all. This isn't a gambling
[14:40] Speaker 5: beef anymore. Somebody's been shot, he's been hurt, bad.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Well, that's not my fault. I didn't shoot him on
[14:44] Speaker 2: anything about it.
[14:44] Speaker 5: You no more than you're telling you lied about coming
[14:46] Speaker 5: here in that truck. We saw you something else. The
[14:48] Speaker 5: truck's been checked out, it's registered in your name. Now
[14:50] Speaker 5: you come up with an answer for that one fast.
[14:51] Speaker 7: Oh, I don't get it.
[14:52] Speaker 2: Maybe my truck is down there for this. I don't
[14:53] Speaker 2: know how it got there. You're in a jam, Mike.
[14:55] Speaker 7: This isn't any misdemeanor.
[14:56] Speaker 6: Wrap.
[14:56] Speaker 2: I think the sooner you realize that, the better it's
[14:57] Speaker 2: going to.
[14:58] Speaker 7: Be for you. You don't have to tell me it's serious.
[15:00] Speaker 5: I know that.
[15:00] Speaker 2: Now.
[15:00] Speaker 5: What do you want from me? And you know what
[15:01] Speaker 5: we want? You know the answers, and we want them.
[15:03] Speaker 5: You're part of that gambling set up.
[15:04] Speaker 6: We know that.
[15:05] Speaker 5: We know who was there tonight, everybody. We want the
[15:06] Speaker 5: names of every one of them. Now, either you got
[15:08] Speaker 5: the answer to that shooting or somebody in that crowd has.
[15:10] Speaker 5: We're gonna get the answer, Mike. Don't make any mistake
[15:11] Speaker 5: about it. We're gonna get it. Now.
[15:12] Speaker 2: What do I have to say to convince you you're
[15:14] Speaker 2: talking to the wrong guy? Not according to the man
[15:16] Speaker 2: they got down the Hall. I wanted a pickup truck
[15:17] Speaker 2: with you. He gave us the whole story.
[15:18] Speaker 7: You hired him to help you tonight. You were gonna
[15:20] Speaker 7: pay him twenty bucks.
[15:21] Speaker 2: He helped your hall the equipment to the store, and
[15:22] Speaker 2: he was supposed to be the lookout at the front door.
[15:24] Speaker 7: It tries in all the way.
[15:25] Speaker 6: How about it?
[15:26] Speaker 5: All right?
[15:26] Speaker 2: Now, you've been calling people lives huh. Well, he's the liar,
[15:29] Speaker 2: the whole lousy story. It is nothing but a lie.
[15:31] Speaker 6: All right, keep quiet, Friday talking.
[15:35] Speaker 5: Oh yes, yah, all right, yeah, yeah.
[15:39] Speaker 6: Thank you. Now you listen like here's a piece of advice.
[15:44] Speaker 6: You make up your mind.
[15:45] Speaker 2: How do you mean make up my mind? I'm trying
[15:47] Speaker 2: to cooperate. You don't believe me. I'm trying to help
[15:49] Speaker 2: you out every way I can. I'm only too glad
[15:51] Speaker 2: to give you a hand. I know you got a
[15:52] Speaker 2: tough job.
[15:53] Speaker 8: You got my child.
[15:54] Speaker 5: Don't you worry about us, mister from here and start
[15:56] Speaker 5: worrying about yourself.
[15:57] Speaker 6: You're going to do a lot of it.
[15:58] Speaker 7: I don't know what you're talking about.
[15:59] Speaker 6: That policeman died.
[16:11] Speaker 4: You are listening to drag met authentic stories of your
[16:14] Speaker 4: police force and action.
[16:23] Speaker 5: Tuesday, February tenth, five point thirty am. Sergeant Fred Taylor
[16:27] Speaker 5: had died at approximately five twenty two am. Cause of
[16:31] Speaker 5: death was listed as hemorrhage and shocked due to the
[16:33] Speaker 5: two gunshot wounds in the chest. Officers from the medical
[16:36] Speaker 5: detail had rushed Taylor's wife from his home to the
[16:39] Speaker 5: receiving hospital. She was with him at the time of
[16:41] Speaker 5: his death. Unfortunately, he never regained consciousness five.
[16:46] Speaker 6: Forty five am.
[16:47] Speaker 5: While the investigation went on at the scene of the murder,
[16:49] Speaker 5: Bill Lockwood and I continued our interrogation of the suspect,
[16:52] Speaker 5: Mike Filmer. Another hour of questioning and he still refused
[16:55] Speaker 5: to tell us anything. We finally confronted him with a
[16:58] Speaker 5: man we'd seen him arrive with at the locate of
[17:00] Speaker 5: a gambling game earlier that morning. Another ten minutes of questioning,
[17:03] Speaker 5: and he finally broke down.
[17:04] Speaker 7: Why didn't you.
[17:05] Speaker 6: Tell us that?
[17:05] Speaker 7: To begin with? Who believe me? I wanted to I
[17:07] Speaker 7: was scared.
[17:08] Speaker 6: I was scared of death.
[17:09] Speaker 7: I never had anything like this happened.
[17:10] Speaker 6: To me before.
[17:11] Speaker 7: I didn't know what to do, I didn't.
[17:12] Speaker 6: What to say.
[17:13] Speaker 5: All right, this is a complete list of everybody you
[17:14] Speaker 5: saw there last night. Everybody was in that game.
[17:17] Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I covered it.
[17:18] Speaker 7: Let me see it right here yet? Uh yeah, yeah,
[17:24] Speaker 7: just about everybody.
[17:24] Speaker 2: These are the only addresses you've got, just these three here,
[17:27] Speaker 2: got it?
[17:28] Speaker 7: Now, I'm not lying.
[17:28] Speaker 6: I believe me.
[17:29] Speaker 7: Tho are the only ones I know.
[17:30] Speaker 5: All right, So you had a hand in the game.
[17:32] Speaker 5: He brought in the equipment, you were working for the house.
[17:34] Speaker 7: That's right.
[17:35] Speaker 6: Then, who's the boss? Mic? Who's running the game? What
[17:38] Speaker 6: about it?
[17:38] Speaker 7: Who's running?
[17:39] Speaker 2: Look, I've told you everybody that was there, everybody. He
[17:42] Speaker 2: wasn't there that night. He couldn't have had anything to
[17:44] Speaker 2: do it.
[17:44] Speaker 5: Like, we didn't ask you that. We asked you who
[17:46] Speaker 5: the boss is? What's his name?
[17:48] Speaker 6: How about it? If we want his name?
[17:50] Speaker 2: But I told you he wasn't there last night. If
[17:51] Speaker 2: he wasn't there, he couldn't have had anything to do
[17:53] Speaker 2: with it. Look, he's a nice guy. He doesn't want
[17:55] Speaker 2: trouble anymore than I do.
[17:56] Speaker 7: He couldn't tell you.
[17:56] Speaker 5: Let us figure that out. Well, you know who's the boss, Mike?
[17:59] Speaker 6: Does it have to be?
[18:00] Speaker 7: Is that important?
[18:00] Speaker 6: We wouldn't be asking you who is he?
[18:03] Speaker 8: George Delano? Now that's all I know about him is name.
[18:05] Speaker 8: How does he spell his last name?
[18:07] Speaker 6: What do he look like?
[18:08] Speaker 7: Well? I guess it's the el ay.
[18:11] Speaker 2: No, I never saw him write it down though I've
[18:14] Speaker 2: only known him about a month.
[18:15] Speaker 6: Maybe five weeks.
[18:15] Speaker 2: What's his description when he's taller than I am?
[18:18] Speaker 8: About five feet ten eleven, maybe dark hair, a little
[18:21] Speaker 8: bit on the heavy side like me.
[18:23] Speaker 2: I guess, man, about forty five fifty.
[18:25] Speaker 6: Where does he live? Where do we find him?
[18:26] Speaker 8: I don't know where he lives, some hotel downtown. I
[18:28] Speaker 8: think the only times I ever met him.
[18:30] Speaker 6: Was at the bar? Which bar?
[18:31] Speaker 8: Where about south end of town, down on Vermont. I
[18:34] Speaker 8: don't know the address, but I can point it out
[18:36] Speaker 8: to you. It's a couple of doors down from the
[18:37] Speaker 8: big bowling alley, right.
[18:38] Speaker 7: Across from a theater. Women's dress shop next door.
[18:40] Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, that's your place.
[18:41] Speaker 7: The only place I've ever seen him.
[18:43] Speaker 2: He always calls me at home, tells you where to
[18:44] Speaker 2: meet him.
[18:45] Speaker 5: You mean to say, you've been working for this Delano
[18:46] Speaker 5: and you don't even know where he lives.
[18:47] Speaker 7: Well, I don't know what else to tell you.
[18:49] Speaker 2: I'm squaring with you. I really don't know.
[18:52] Speaker 6: Friday talk to him. Yeah, I'll be right back. Now,
[18:59] Speaker 6: what do you got to saying?
[19:00] Speaker 8: Charlie Hart and I just got back and placed down
[19:02] Speaker 8: on Gibbons Avenue the store.
[19:04] Speaker 6: You know, don't you'd like to know?
[19:05] Speaker 7: We found a gun in the back the place, hitting
[19:07] Speaker 7: under a lumber pile.
[19:08] Speaker 6: All right, to check it out?
[19:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, I ran through a gun record to tragedy.
[19:11] Speaker 7: What's the name? George Delano?
[19:16] Speaker 5: Seven thirty eight am. With the new lead on the
[19:19] Speaker 5: alleged boss of the gambling ring, George Delano, we interrupted
[19:22] Speaker 5: our questioning of the suspect, Mike Filmer. We took him
[19:25] Speaker 5: down the hall back to the homicide squadron to be
[19:27] Speaker 5: held for further interrogation. We checked Delano through R and I,
[19:30] Speaker 5: but we had no record on him. Then, along with
[19:33] Speaker 5: Sergeant Sam Flowers and Charlie Hart up Homicide, we drove
[19:36] Speaker 5: out to the address of George Delano as listed in
[19:38] Speaker 5: the gun registration files. There was a small cottage in
[19:42] Speaker 5: the Wheelshire area. The woman who answered the door identified
[19:45] Speaker 5: herself as Missus George Delano, the suspect's wife. She called
[19:48] Speaker 5: her husband to the door. We identified ourselves, briefed him
[19:51] Speaker 5: on the reason for our visit and told him we
[19:53] Speaker 5: wanted to talk to him downtown. He appeared cooperative, more
[19:56] Speaker 5: than willing to come along. He got dressed, We drove
[19:59] Speaker 5: him back to the city Hall took him to the
[20:00] Speaker 5: interrogation room. He was well dressed and, in his own way,
[20:04] Speaker 5: well mannered. After being told of the situation, he admitted
[20:07] Speaker 5: freely that he'd been operating games at different locations throughout
[20:10] Speaker 5: the city for the past month and a half. He
[20:12] Speaker 5: told us that he'd employed Mike Filmer to assist him
[20:14] Speaker 5: in his operations, and he also admitted ownership of the.
[20:16] Speaker 6: Gun found near the murder scene.
[20:18] Speaker 5: The gun had since been checked by RUSS Camp and
[20:20] Speaker 5: Ballistics and found to be the murder weapon.
[20:22] Speaker 7: Well, yes, it's my gun, but I like to explain
[20:24] Speaker 7: a little bit about it.
[20:25] Speaker 8: What's that, Delna, Well, number one, I admit I'm a gambler,
[20:27] Speaker 8: that's my racket. I'm new to Los Angeles. I admit
[20:30] Speaker 8: I've been working a few games, but I know murderer.
[20:32] Speaker 8: I wouldn't have any part if you said you were
[20:33] Speaker 8: gonna explain about the gun, and I would about it.
[20:35] Speaker 7: Now, look, I'd like to fill you in on everything.
[20:36] Speaker 6: Officers.
[20:37] Speaker 7: I got nothing to hide from you. I'll tell you everything.
[20:39] Speaker 6: Now.
[20:40] Speaker 8: When I first came to this town, as I say,
[20:41] Speaker 8: it's been about five six weeks, I made a few
[20:43] Speaker 8: connections and I started running these games. For the first
[20:46] Speaker 8: couple of weeks, everything went fine, no beats, everything was fine.
[20:49] Speaker 7: All I had to do is dodge you feller and
[20:51] Speaker 7: the trouble started him.
[20:52] Speaker 8: How do you mean you mind if I have a
[20:53] Speaker 8: smoke a little look carefully, No, nothing. I want to
[20:58] Speaker 8: fill you in from the start. I'man to clear this
[21:00] Speaker 8: whole thing up.
[21:01] Speaker 6: Yeah that's what you said.
[21:02] Speaker 8: Yeah, well, as I told you. For a few weeks,
[21:05] Speaker 8: everything was fine. Then one night, when the game was
[21:08] Speaker 8: just about ready to break, a couple of punks came in,
[21:10] Speaker 8: held us up.
[21:11] Speaker 7: They cleaned everybody in the place, made a big haul.
[21:13] Speaker 6: When was this word?
[21:14] Speaker 8: It happened down on the east side. Bunks took us for everything.
[21:17] Speaker 6: You know it is.
[21:18] Speaker 8: Couldn't make a report to you. I just had to
[21:19] Speaker 8: take it cover the losses myself. Yeah, now, how about
[21:22] Speaker 8: that gun, I'm coming to it. This thing happens and
[21:24] Speaker 8: I figured that's the end of it, But no, a
[21:26] Speaker 8: couple of nights later they hit again. I still can't squawk.
[21:28] Speaker 8: I have to stand the losses. Another couple of nights
[21:30] Speaker 8: they knock us over again. Couldn't do a thing about
[21:32] Speaker 8: it more.
[21:32] Speaker 6: I we've heard all that. That's your racket. You can
[21:34] Speaker 6: expect it.
[21:35] Speaker 5: All we want to know is about that gun. Now,
[21:36] Speaker 5: what's your story.
[21:37] Speaker 8: I told you I was coming to it. After the
[21:39] Speaker 8: third time they reached us, I hired a guard, somebody
[21:41] Speaker 8: stand watch outside in case of another stick up.
[21:43] Speaker 7: The only thing I could do.
[21:44] Speaker 8: Yeah, well, so I hired.
[21:45] Speaker 7: Some guy to stand guard on the games. Wanted my
[21:48] Speaker 7: gun in case there was any trouble, and.
[21:49] Speaker 6: You told them to use it in case there was struggle.
[21:51] Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right.
[21:52] Speaker 5: How about right from the police you told me to
[21:53] Speaker 5: use it for that.
[21:54] Speaker 8: No, no, matter of fact, I made a point of
[21:55] Speaker 8: telling him about that. All he was supposed to use
[21:57] Speaker 8: the gun for was just to fire it up in
[21:59] Speaker 8: the air, maybe scare those punks, often warned the guys
[22:01] Speaker 8: inside at the same time.
[22:02] Speaker 5: We'll talk about that later, Delana. We want to know
[22:04] Speaker 5: who had the gun last night.
[22:05] Speaker 7: Well, the guard did. I told you. I loaned him
[22:07] Speaker 7: the gun.
[22:07] Speaker 6: Who's the guard?
[22:08] Speaker 7: What's his name? Where do we find him? His name's Jake.
[22:10] Speaker 7: A friend of mine got him for me see Jake Gleason.
[22:13] Speaker 7: Of course he lived. I couldn't tell you that. I
[22:15] Speaker 7: don't know.
[22:15] Speaker 8: I always contacted him at a bar in South for
[22:17] Speaker 8: a month place I go quite a bit. Yeah, a
[22:20] Speaker 8: little too early to.
[22:20] Speaker 7: Catch him there.
[22:21] Speaker 6: Now, what do you know about this glease of what's
[22:22] Speaker 6: he look like?
[22:23] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[22:24] Speaker 7: I haven't seen him much.
[22:25] Speaker 8: I guess you said about thirty two thirty three and
[22:27] Speaker 8: light brown hair called x con. I think either he
[22:31] Speaker 8: told me or somebody told me the time.
[22:32] Speaker 5: You knew he was an ex con and you gave
[22:34] Speaker 5: him your gun.
[22:34] Speaker 8: Well, yeah, but I didn't tell him to shoot anybody.
[22:36] Speaker 8: I made a point of telling him that dumb jerk,
[22:38] Speaker 8: especially shooting a cop. All he was supposed to do
[22:40] Speaker 8: is fire up in the air. Those punks came around
[22:42] Speaker 8: scare him away to help me. That's the only time
[22:44] Speaker 8: he was supposed to use the gun.
[22:45] Speaker 7: I told him. I'm much of a story, Delena. Can
[22:47] Speaker 7: you prove and.
[22:47] Speaker 8: Sure I can prove it. You can ask Mike Mike
[22:49] Speaker 8: Filmer and tell you the same thing. You can ask
[22:51] Speaker 8: Leeson himself.
[22:53] Speaker 6: Jerk.
[22:53] Speaker 7: Mike said he wasn't too sharp a little punch. He
[22:55] Speaker 7: wasn't quite right in my head?
[22:56] Speaker 6: What's that?
[22:57] Speaker 7: I said? He was a little punchy. He wasn't quite
[22:59] Speaker 7: right in my head?
[23:00] Speaker 5: You mean you met him in a bar. You didn't
[23:01] Speaker 5: know anything about his background. You knew he was an
[23:03] Speaker 5: ex con you had an idea wasn't too sharp. Maybe
[23:05] Speaker 5: he wasn't all there?
[23:06] Speaker 6: Is that right? Yeah? That's about it?
[23:07] Speaker 5: And you put this man in a spot where you
[23:09] Speaker 5: knew he'd be in trouble, and then you gave him
[23:10] Speaker 5: a gun?
[23:11] Speaker 6: Is that right? How about it? Delano?
[23:13] Speaker 7: What are you looking at me for? I told the
[23:15] Speaker 7: dun jerk what to do.
[23:16] Speaker 8: I didn't count to shoot anybody, punchdrunk, bloemn truth. I
[23:19] Speaker 8: didn't have a thing to do with it. I hired
[23:21] Speaker 8: the guy, that's all. It's not my fault. Are you
[23:24] Speaker 8: looking at I wasn't even there. I didn't even know
[23:25] Speaker 8: about it. I didn't kill that cock, didn't you?
[23:33] Speaker 5: Nine twenty three am. We continued questioning George Delano. He
[23:36] Speaker 5: told us that he'd instructed Jake Gleason, the ex convict,
[23:39] Speaker 5: to stand guard at the rear of the store where
[23:41] Speaker 5: the gambling games were held.
[23:43] Speaker 6: He insisted that his instructions to Gleason were that.
[23:45] Speaker 5: If he had to fire the gun at all, he
[23:47] Speaker 5: was to fire it in the air and then only
[23:49] Speaker 5: as a warning signal in case of robbery attempt. Deleno
[23:52] Speaker 5: was detained by homicide officers pending further investigation. We checked
[23:56] Speaker 5: the name and description of Jake Gleason through on I
[23:58] Speaker 5: and found his record in mugshot. We showed the mug
[24:01] Speaker 5: to Delano and he identified it. Gleason's record showed him
[24:04] Speaker 5: to be on active parole. Ten thirty am, we contacted
[24:08] Speaker 5: the parole office. They gave us his address and villa
[24:10] Speaker 5: and I checked it out a second.
[24:11] Speaker 6: Rate hotel on South Flower Street.
[24:13] Speaker 5: The manager told us Gleason had left the hotel about
[24:16] Speaker 5: seven forty five that morning and that he was not
[24:17] Speaker 5: expected back until after six o'clock that night. He also
[24:21] Speaker 5: told us there was a chance we might locate him
[24:22] Speaker 5: in one of the bars around the neighborhood. Ten forty five,
[24:26] Speaker 5: we started making the rounds of the bars in the
[24:28] Speaker 5: immediate vicinity. The third place we stopped at was practically deserted.
[24:31] Speaker 5: A jukebox at the back of the place was turned
[24:33] Speaker 5: up the full volume. There was a smell of disinfectant
[24:36] Speaker 5: whiskey and stale perfume. There was one customer drinking at
[24:39] Speaker 5: the far end of the bar.
[24:40] Speaker 6: It was Gleason. Stand up police officers, HI shake him
[24:49] Speaker 6: down hill.
[24:52] Speaker 5: Queen Joe hands him back to Yeah, I want to
[24:55] Speaker 5: kill that joke Boxville.
[24:56] Speaker 6: Yeah, all right, you know why we want you.
[25:00] Speaker 7: Well, there wasn't any sense running.
[25:02] Speaker 6: I knew you'd be around. All right, let's go.
[25:04] Speaker 8: Could you do me a favor? I mean, wait a minute,
[25:06] Speaker 8: just a minute. It's like to tell you I didn't
[25:08] Speaker 8: mean it. I guess it's my own fault.
[25:10] Speaker 7: I shot him. I shouldn't have had the gun, shouldn't
[25:12] Speaker 7: have taken the job. I shot him. I didn't mean it,
[25:14] Speaker 7: all right, Come on, there.
[25:15] Speaker 8: Ought to be away, don't you think I mean there
[25:17] Speaker 8: really ought to be away.
[25:18] Speaker 6: What's that?
[25:19] Speaker 8: I didn't mean it, No reason to kill him. I
[25:21] Speaker 8: didn't even know him. I just keep thinking there was
[25:24] Speaker 8: only a way, if I could take it back again,
[25:26] Speaker 8: you know, yeah, I mean, if I could go back
[25:27] Speaker 8: and change it, make it all different.
[25:30] Speaker 7: I mean, right from the beginning, I wouldn't even look
[25:31] Speaker 7: at the gun. I'd change everything better.
[25:33] Speaker 6: I would.
[25:34] Speaker 7: I wouldn't even look at a gun.
[25:35] Speaker 8: Only had the chance, you know, second chance there ought
[25:38] Speaker 8: to be away second chance.
[25:40] Speaker 6: He started with a gun.
[25:41] Speaker 8: Jay, Yeah, you never had a first one.
[25:50] Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true. The names
[25:53] Speaker 3: were changed to protect the innocent.
[25:55] Speaker 4: On May twenty, second trial was held in Superior Court,
[25:58] Speaker 4: Department eighty eight, City in County of Los Angeles, State
[26:01] Speaker 4: of California.
[26:01] Speaker 7: In a moment the results of that trial.
[26:12] Speaker 4: Jacob Allan Gleason was tried and convicted of murder in
[26:15] Speaker 4: the first degree and was sentenced to a life term
[26:17] Speaker 4: in the state penitentiary. George Delano, Mike Filmer, and all
[26:20] Speaker 4: other principles were found guilty of violating the Municipal Code
[26:23] Speaker 4: forty three point zero one gambling and received sentences as
[26:27] Speaker 4: prescribed by law. George Delano and Mike Filmer were sentenced
[26:30] Speaker 4: to six month terms in the county jail. Others received
[26:34] Speaker 4: proportionate sentences.
[26:36] Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, Mister James Fox, Director on the Executive
[26:40] Speaker 3: Board of the Mystery Writers of America. Tonight, it is
[26:42] Speaker 3: with a great deal of pleasure that I am, speaking
[26:43] Speaker 3: for the entire membership of the Mystery Writers of America
[26:46] Speaker 3: in all fields, present the Edgar Allan Poe Award for
[26:49] Speaker 3: the second consecutive year for the finest radio presentation as
[26:52] Speaker 3: his class Dragnet. To you, Jack Webb and your fine
[26:56] Speaker 3: group of technicians responsible for the overall production of Dragnet
[27:00] Speaker 3: present their statuette of one of them more at holds
[27:01] Speaker 3: in the field of mystery, Edgar Allan Poe.
[27:04] Speaker 5: Thank you very much, mister Fox, and thanks also the
[27:06] Speaker 5: membership of the Mystery Writers.
[27:07] Speaker 3: Of America and standing by to receive his award also
[27:10] Speaker 3: for the second consecutive year as the outstanding radio writer
[27:13] Speaker 3: in his field and for the consistent job he does
[27:16] Speaker 3: on Dragnet.
[27:16] Speaker 6: Jim Mosar, here's your statuette. Thank you very much, mister Fox.
[27:21] Speaker 6: Ladies and gentlemen.
[27:21] Speaker 5: It's seldom, indeed, when the writer of any radio show
[27:24] Speaker 5: receives his just and due acclaim. So were the greatest
[27:27] Speaker 5: of pleasure that we accept the Edgar Allan Poe Awards,
[27:29] Speaker 5: And as it is primarily a writer's award, all of
[27:32] Speaker 5: us who have.
[27:32] Speaker 6: Had a hand in bringing Gragnet into your.
[27:34] Speaker 5: Homes each week are proud of our writer, Jim Moser,
[27:36] Speaker 5: for as anyone in radio will readily go on record
[27:38] Speaker 5: by saying and knowing that you're only as good as
[27:41] Speaker 5: the scripture read, So it's with deep gratitude that we
[27:43] Speaker 5: receive the MWA Award, which best illustrates and confirms the
[27:46] Speaker 5: high opinion which we all hold of our writer, Jim Moser.
[27:49] Speaker 2: Thank you, Jack, and I'd like to express my special
[27:52] Speaker 2: appreciation to our technical advisers from the Los Angeles Police Department,
[27:56] Speaker 2: without whom none of this would be possible.
[28:07] Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
[28:10] Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
[28:13] Speaker 4: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department
[28:16] Speaker 4: Technical advisors Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Winn, Sergeant Vans Braser.
[28:21] Speaker 4: Heard tonight were Martin Milner, Eddie Firestone with Connor. Script
[28:25] Speaker 4: by Jim Moser, music by Walter Schumann. Hell give me speaking.
[28:36] Speaker 3: Now. It's counter Spy on NBC.
[28:46] Speaker 1: Welcome back, the last Bill Walkward episode and doesn't actually
[28:52] Speaker 1: get to do a whole lot. The episode was a
[28:55] Speaker 1: reminder of the fact that the police can potential of
[29:02] Speaker 1: death even on the most unlikely of calls, and certainly
[29:07] Speaker 1: enforcing a municipal anti gambling ordinance wasn't a point where
[29:15] Speaker 1: you would expect someone to shoot a police officer, but
[29:20] Speaker 1: it happened. George Gleeson is yet another one of those
[29:24] Speaker 1: criminals who'd have been charged a lot more seriously today.
[29:32] Speaker 1: He handed a loaded handgun to a felon who he
[29:38] Speaker 1: could tell was not right in the head. Now, because
[29:42] Speaker 1: he had given explicit orders against this sort of thing
[29:45] Speaker 1: and hadn't directed any violence against police officers, then all
[29:51] Speaker 1: they could charge him with was the gambling charge and
[29:55] Speaker 1: nothing related to the murder. Today it wouldn't be the
[29:59] Speaker 1: question of whether he'd be facing felony charges but which once.
[30:05] Speaker 1: But Friday did the best you could do in nineteen
[30:08] Speaker 1: fifty two and made the case in a very Joe
[30:13] Speaker 1: Friday way that whatever the law says, he was more
[30:18] Speaker 1: like culpable. And that's a key part of dragnet. They don't,
[30:23] Speaker 1: as a rule, imagine heftier sentences or more serious charges
[30:31] Speaker 1: than are warranted under existing laws. Rather, you have defendants
[30:37] Speaker 1: who are punished in accordance with the laws on the books.
[30:42] Speaker 1: And if viewers feel a sentence was either too lenient
[30:48] Speaker 1: or too strict, they can't really blame the writers, but
[30:52] Speaker 1: they can't ask their elective representatives to make changes. We
[30:56] Speaker 1: have an email from Carissa who writes good morning Adam.
[31:01] Speaker 1: The dragoned episode The Big Elevator reminded me of a
[31:04] Speaker 1: Johony Dollar episode from a few months ago where Johnnie's
[31:07] Speaker 1: friend was dying of what they thought was a severe ulcer.
[31:11] Speaker 1: You pointed out at the time that the nineteen fifties
[31:14] Speaker 1: approach to medical emergencies left a lot to be desired.
[31:19] Speaker 1: I'd a similar thought about the dead woman in The
[31:22] Speaker 1: Big Elevator today. If a person started having severe headaches,
[31:26] Speaker 1: personality changes, etc. Doctors would probably eventually order tests that
[31:30] Speaker 1: would find the tumor before the woman dropped dead. Even today,
[31:35] Speaker 1: some brain tumors are untreatable, but at least the husband
[31:39] Speaker 1: would have known that the drinking and party partying were
[31:42] Speaker 1: due to a medical condition outside his wife's control. Love
[31:47] Speaker 1: the show and thanks for all your hard work. Well
[31:51] Speaker 1: thanks so much. I appreciate the comment, and certainly there
[31:56] Speaker 1: would be more potential for early detective today with those
[32:02] Speaker 1: sort of medical treatments, though it depends on the person
[32:07] Speaker 1: having access to medical care, which can sometimes be a challenge,
[32:13] Speaker 1: and also taking the potential symptoms seriously and having a
[32:20] Speaker 1: sort of support system that encourages you. You know, you
[32:24] Speaker 1: got a friend to say, you know, you really ought
[32:26] Speaker 1: to go get that checked out. And I don't think
[32:29] Speaker 1: she ran with that type of crowd. Now in terms
[32:33] Speaker 1: of the drinking and partying. When I went back and
[32:38] Speaker 1: listened to what the husband had to say, and what
[32:41] Speaker 1: he indicated was that this was a problem from the
[32:46] Speaker 1: get go and that she didn't even know how to
[32:50] Speaker 1: be a wife, that doesn't indicate to me that anything
[32:55] Speaker 1: had changed in terms of the drinking and partying. Now.
[32:59] Speaker 1: The core did conclude that the tumor was causing her
[33:04] Speaker 1: a lot of pain and that may have led her
[33:08] Speaker 1: to drink even more in order to self medicate, But
[33:14] Speaker 1: I wouldn't read it as the tumor causing personality change,
[33:20] Speaker 1: at least not in this instance from what we have
[33:23] Speaker 1: in the script. But thanks so much. I appreciate the email.
[33:26] Speaker 1: Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.
