[0:28] Speaker 1: Hello, we are taking a bit of a recording break
[0:31] Speaker 1: during the holidays and bringing you some encores from the
[0:35] Speaker 1: twenty ninth and thirtieth. We will be bringing you the
[0:39] Speaker 1: first and last circulating episodes of Nick Carter. Both of
[0:45] Speaker 1: these episodes are from many years ago, and so any
[0:49] Speaker 1: offers or information in the episode are not valid unless
[0:53] Speaker 1: currently reflected on our Great Detectives of Old Time Radio
[0:56] Speaker 1: website at Greatdetectives dot net. Now on with today's show.
[1:02] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho.
[1:09] Speaker 1: This is your host, Adam Graham. If you have a comment,
[1:12] Speaker 1: email it to us Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,

[1:25] Speaker 1: Today's episode is brought to you by the financial support
[1:28] Speaker 1: of our listeners. Thank you so much for your support. Well, folks,
[1:33] Speaker 1: after a month of various mystery specials, we're ready to
[1:38] Speaker 1: bring in a new show to take the place of.
[1:40] Speaker 2: Sherlock Holmes in our lineup, and we're going to start
[1:45] Speaker 2: Nick Carter, a character whose her story appeared before Burlock
[1:52] Speaker 2: Holmes in eighteen eighty six, Nick Carter appeared in the
[1:56] Speaker 2: Mysterious Crime of Madison Square, and that led to twenty
[2:02] Speaker 2: nine more years of Nick Carter's stories and Nick Carter Magazines,
[2:09] Speaker 2: a weekly publication by Street and Smith that was replaced
[2:15] Speaker 2: in nineteen fifteen and then was returned again three year
[2:21] Speaker 2: eighteen years later as a pulp magazine from nineteen thirty
[2:26] Speaker 2: three to thirty six, and then there were three films
[2:31] Speaker 2: by starring Walter Pigeon nineteen thirty nine and forty. Nick
[2:36] Speaker 2: Carter came to radio a well known character. While his
[2:41] Speaker 2: stories predated Sherlock Holmes, no one I think would argue
[2:46] Speaker 2: that they were superior or even in the same league
[2:51] Speaker 2: as Holmes. The Nick Carter stories were written by a
[2:54] Speaker 2: wide variety of authors, and I've read several of the
[2:59] Speaker 2: stories and they really seemed to change styles depending on
[3:02] Speaker 2: the literary mood of the moment. So we're going to
[3:07] Speaker 2: go ahead and we'll take a listen to the radio series.
[3:10] Speaker 2: The series starred Long Caught Lark and aired from nineteen
[3:14] Speaker 2: forty three to nineteen fifty five, and as far as
[3:18] Speaker 2: I know, it is the longest detective series where you've
[3:22] Speaker 2: had one detective in the lead role mister Keene s
[3:26] Speaker 2: Tracer of Lost Person. There were more series, and of
[3:29] Speaker 2: course there were more seasons of Sherlock Holmes, though not
[3:34] Speaker 2: all of those ran consecutively. Nick Carter began airing over
[3:38] Speaker 2: the Mutual Network on April the eleventh of nineteen forty three.
[3:43] Speaker 2: We're missing the first twelve episodes of Nick Carter, but
[3:49] Speaker 2: we have episode number thirteen, which aired on July sixth
[3:55] Speaker 2: of nineteen forty three. So here now is the Echo
[4:00] Speaker 2: of Death.
[4:12] Speaker 3: Holligue Dick Connor. Another case for Nick Carr.
[4:16] Speaker 4: Master Detective.
[4:18] Speaker 5: Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all Manhutters,
[4:21] Speaker 5: the detective whose ability at solving crime is unequaled in
[4:24] Speaker 5: the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter, Master Detective. The
[4:33] Speaker 5: Night's Curious Adventure is the Echo of Death or the
[4:38] Speaker 5: Cornor and the phantom Glue?
[4:48] Speaker 6: No, no, please, don't kill me. Don't kill me polyme.
[4:52] Speaker 1: Still they're just like that.
[4:54] Speaker 6: This has got to look right.
[4:55] Speaker 4: No, I don't do anything you say.
[4:57] Speaker 7: I'll forget everything I know, only.
[5:01] Speaker 6: All right, he said, I'll come on.
[5:19] Speaker 8: Hello, Yes, this is Nick Carter speaking. Okay, so what
[5:24] Speaker 8: kind of case this appears? Well, that's hardly my line.
[5:31] Speaker 8: Oh I see, yes, yes, yes, I understand. All right,
[5:41] Speaker 8: expect us late this afternoon. You got that on the extension, Patsy,
[5:46] Speaker 8: I should.
[5:46] Speaker 9: Say so, Echo Valley Lodge, private and Sybbian plane waiting
[5:50] Speaker 9: for you at the airport, Come at once. Never mind
[5:52] Speaker 9: the sea. Who is this, Howard Man said? Who toss
[5:55] Speaker 9: his money around like confetti?
[5:57] Speaker 8: A well known millionaire sportsman, Patsy. But wouldn't it be
[6:02] Speaker 8: more to the point to ask about the man who's disappeared?
[6:05] Speaker 4: Oh you mean James Llo the calumnists.
[6:07] Speaker 3: Why he's hey?
[6:09] Speaker 4: Who is he? Anyway?
[6:10] Speaker 8: That's what you get not reading the financial pages of
[6:12] Speaker 8: the paper, Passy.
[6:13] Speaker 1: I'll come along.
[6:14] Speaker 8: We've got to find a tax he can't get to
[6:15] Speaker 8: the airport.
[6:16] Speaker 4: We Why ain't we going to take anything with it? Oh?
[6:18] Speaker 8: Yes, of course I was forgetting.
[6:19] Speaker 4: I thought you were. I'll need my new dress.
[6:21] Speaker 8: I want Scuvey call him and tell him to meet
[6:23] Speaker 8: us at the airport. He knows thelo They write for
[6:25] Speaker 8: the same paper. On one other thing, Passy, bring along
[6:28] Speaker 8: volume three of the Encyclopedia E.
[6:30] Speaker 9: To Hcvey Wilson and volume three of an encyclopedia that's
[6:35] Speaker 9: just what a girl needs for a visit.
[6:36] Speaker 4: To a millionaire's hunting lodge, So tell them visit it.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Because of its somewhat inaccessible.
[6:52] Speaker 4: Location, Echo Valley is a natural creak of singular interests.
[6:56] Speaker 7: I have friends. You could say the same thing about that.
[6:58] Speaker 7: The encyclopedia doesn't mention them.
[7:00] Speaker 8: Quiet scoviy let, Patsy finished reading.
[7:02] Speaker 9: Echo Valley is of great interest to scientists. Founds occurring
[7:06] Speaker 9: in certain areas of Echo Valley may be repeated as
[7:09] Speaker 9: many a thirteen times, echoing from cliff to cliff, in
[7:12] Speaker 9: gradually diminishing volume.
[7:14] Speaker 7: Why do encyclopedias always used so many words to say
[7:17] Speaker 7: so little?
[7:18] Speaker 4: That's what I wonder about newspaper reporters.
[7:20] Speaker 7: Sometimes too, so we'll change the subject.
[7:23] Speaker 10: What else does it say?
[7:24] Speaker 4: That's all?
[7:25] Speaker 7: Well, that's no help. Thurlow certainly wasn't carried off by
[7:28] Speaker 7: an echo.
[7:29] Speaker 8: Ah, He's probably just lost in the woods.
[7:31] Speaker 3: In any case, I don't see why manst Did insisted on.
[7:34] Speaker 4: You coming out to look for a nick. You're no Indian.
[7:36] Speaker 8: Guide, Patsy. If Thurlow isn't found alive, it may cost
[7:41] Speaker 8: the public millions millions.
[7:43] Speaker 7: Wish just a columnist isn't just a columnist. He's the
[7:47] Speaker 7: smartest financial reporter in New York.
[7:49] Speaker 8: And Thurlo's more than just a reporter Patsy in the
[7:52] Speaker 8: financial colomy. Right, she sometimes tips the authorities off to
[7:55] Speaker 8: big stocks, windows and other kinds of financial skulduggery.
[7:58] Speaker 7: Right, it was Thurlow who broke off the Nemo bank
[8:00] Speaker 7: scattle three years ago and set the whole Border directors
[8:03] Speaker 7: to prison.
[8:03] Speaker 8: And for some time, Betsy Thurlow has been hinting in
[8:06] Speaker 8: his column that he was on the verge of revealing
[8:08] Speaker 8: some kind of tie up between certain politicians and one
[8:12] Speaker 8: or two big operators and robbed the public of millions.
[8:16] Speaker 9: Oh then if anything happened to him now before he's
[8:18] Speaker 9: had a chance to tell anybody what he knew, the
[8:20] Speaker 9: scheme would go through.
[8:21] Speaker 7: With Casle Right, that's why he went to Echo Valley
[8:24] Speaker 7: Lodge man Stead, an old friend of his invited him
[8:27] Speaker 7: out so we could work in peace for.
[8:28] Speaker 8: A few weeks. Scubby huh Is it true that Thurlow
[8:32] Speaker 8: was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when he left?
[8:35] Speaker 7: Oh, he was walking around in circles talking to himself.
[8:38] Speaker 8: Nick.
[8:38] Speaker 7: He had almost all a dope he wanted, but he
[8:40] Speaker 7: still hadn't got the name of the guy behind the
[8:42] Speaker 7: whole scheme. He took along a whole bunch of records
[8:45] Speaker 7: of stock transactions. He said they might give him the
[8:48] Speaker 7: clue he needed. And hey, look ahead of.
[8:51] Speaker 4: Us, Echo Valley. It is, isn't it.
[8:54] Speaker 8: Nick, No doubt of it, Betsy.
[8:55] Speaker 7: But look that isn't any echo flying tortoise.
[8:58] Speaker 3: A plane, Nick, is a plane lying up out of
[9:00] Speaker 3: Eco Vallet.
[9:01] Speaker 8: Yes, yeah, just said private Amphibian.
[9:05] Speaker 7: I thought this plane of Manstairs was the only one
[9:07] Speaker 7: in these parts.
[9:08] Speaker 8: And the pilot cenis Huh, he's turning on of our
[9:12] Speaker 8: line of flight.
[9:13] Speaker 4: We suppose he wants to avoid it.
[9:15] Speaker 7: I'll bet he doesn't want us to see his markets.
[9:17] Speaker 4: He is trying to avoid us.
[9:19] Speaker 8: Oh, pilot, swing over so we can get a look
[9:21] Speaker 8: at that plane down there.
[9:28] Speaker 4: He knows we're trying to get closer to man Look at.
[9:30] Speaker 7: Him back to avoid us.
[9:33] Speaker 3: He's turned, he's heading away from us.
[9:35] Speaker 8: Now, a pilot, he'p me take that plane if you can.
[9:42] Speaker 7: Say, isn't that the Manstead hunting lodge down there right
[9:45] Speaker 7: on the edge of the lake. Yes, cover it is.
[9:47] Speaker 8: But we're not gonna land until we get some idea
[9:49] Speaker 8: what that plane's up to.
[9:51] Speaker 4: Look, he's diving straight down.
[9:53] Speaker 8: Now he's gonna try to get away underneath us.
[9:56] Speaker 7: Oh, he'll never make it. Those private planes aren't fill
[9:59] Speaker 7: and breaking off.
[10:00] Speaker 8: Couldn't take the strain.
[10:01] Speaker 7: He's heading straight for the ground. If he hasn't got
[10:03] Speaker 7: a parachute, but he has.
[10:04] Speaker 4: If he's killed me, kill me.
[10:07] Speaker 8: And there goes his plane into the trees. Wow, that
[10:15] Speaker 8: was a narrow escape. He didn't have more than five
[10:18] Speaker 8: hundred feet of out it.
[10:19] Speaker 4: Dude, come down on the top of that tall pine.
[10:22] Speaker 4: He's caught there. See his parachute won't come oop.
[10:25] Speaker 8: Yes, well, we'll have to land and rescue him. Besides,
[10:30] Speaker 8: I want to know why he was so anxious to
[10:32] Speaker 8: avoid having his plane identified. A pilot land in the
[10:36] Speaker 8: lake and taxi up as close as possible to the
[10:39] Speaker 8: place that fellow came down.
[10:54] Speaker 7: Okay, back on your face.
[11:01] Speaker 4: That we're almost there.
[11:03] Speaker 8: Yes, there's a clear ringer.
[11:04] Speaker 6: That's the head.
[11:05] Speaker 8: Only a few more steps.
[11:06] Speaker 7: Oh, and they say exercise is good for you.
[11:11] Speaker 3: There's this terrisue. I think I can see him hanging
[11:15] Speaker 3: among the branches.
[11:16] Speaker 7: He's hurt.
[11:17] Speaker 8: Corner us. Come on his.
[11:19] Speaker 7: Shroud lines are caught among the branches. I can see
[11:22] Speaker 7: that much.
[11:23] Speaker 11: He's just just dangling there.
[11:25] Speaker 8: Hey you up there? Can you hear us? You're all right?
[11:30] Speaker 10: He doesn't answer.
[11:31] Speaker 7: Look, I'll climb up and see a fight.
[11:33] Speaker 8: No, wait, what is it?
[11:35] Speaker 6: Nick?
[11:37] Speaker 8: Look at those shroud.
[11:38] Speaker 3: Lines, they're wrapped around his neck.
[11:43] Speaker 7: Look at the way his head is twisted to one side.
[11:45] Speaker 8: Yes, his next broken?
[11:49] Speaker 7: He did what?
[11:50] Speaker 8: Oh?
[11:52] Speaker 4: He landed in the tree. He got tangled in the.
[11:54] Speaker 8: Lines, And I wonder, what do you mean? Look down
[11:59] Speaker 8: at your feets cigarette?
[12:02] Speaker 6: But what?
[12:03] Speaker 8: Somebody must have been here before us, maybe, but this
[12:07] Speaker 8: precision makes me think the cigarette was smoked by him
[12:10] Speaker 8: up there.
[12:11] Speaker 7: But that's impossible, Nick.
[12:13] Speaker 8: In just about an hour, Scabby, since he crashed, he
[12:16] Speaker 8: knew we'd come after him. Sophie was hurt and couldn't
[12:19] Speaker 8: get out of his shoot onness whether they're more natural,
[12:21] Speaker 8: and him smoke a cigarette and a way to be rescued.
[12:23] Speaker 8: But he did because somebody reached him before we did
[12:29] Speaker 8: and murdered him.
[12:42] Speaker 6: So that's the story, Miss Carter, As much as we
[12:44] Speaker 6: know anyway, Thurlo just wandered away yesterday morning and never returned.
[12:48] Speaker 8: I say, mister Manson, and you don't think this mysterious
[12:51] Speaker 8: airplane we met just before we reached here as any
[12:53] Speaker 8: connection with Thurlow's vanishing.
[12:55] Speaker 6: I don't see how it could. But then, as I said,
[12:57] Speaker 6: I haven't the slightest idea where the plane could have
[12:59] Speaker 6: come rummer who was flying it?
[13:01] Speaker 8: And now let's go over the facts again, if you
[13:04] Speaker 8: don't mind, of course not. Tharlow arrived here a week ago.
[13:08] Speaker 6: Yes with his wife. I had them flown in in
[13:10] Speaker 6: my plane. They had the lodge to themselves, with my
[13:12] Speaker 6: permanent housekeeper to look after them.
[13:14] Speaker 8: And you arrived yesterday in the middle of the afternoon.
[13:17] Speaker 8: But Erlaw wasn't here when you arrived.
[13:19] Speaker 6: No, he'd already gone out. He told his wife he
[13:21] Speaker 6: was taking his revolver along and would take pot shots
[13:24] Speaker 6: at the trees and rocks.
[13:25] Speaker 8: So you never actually show him.
[13:27] Speaker 6: That's right. The woodsman I employed to look after the
[13:30] Speaker 6: property asked me to come and examine some trees he
[13:32] Speaker 6: wanted to cut down. About sundown, I got back to
[13:35] Speaker 6: the lodge and Thurlough still hadn't returned. Missus s. Thurlow
[13:38] Speaker 6: was becoming worried. I ordered the floodlights were used for
[13:41] Speaker 6: landing the plane at night, but he didn't show.
[13:43] Speaker 8: Up, and then in the morning you called me.
[13:45] Speaker 6: Well, first I phoned the nearest far Stranger station, and
[13:48] Speaker 6: after that, Missus Thurlow was so agitated I promised I'd
[13:51] Speaker 6: sent for you.
[13:52] Speaker 8: Where is Missus Thurlow? I'd like to ask a few questions.
[13:55] Speaker 6: So he's sleeping now. She was up all night and
[13:57] Speaker 6: this morning the housekeeper gave her a sleeping tablet.
[14:00] Speaker 8: Wait, no, no, no, no, no, not just now, it's still
[14:02] Speaker 8: an hour of daylight left. I'd like to take a
[14:03] Speaker 8: look around outside.
[14:05] Speaker 6: Wraps up all over it, mister Manstead, Johnny, what is
[14:10] Speaker 6: it his hat?
[14:12] Speaker 4: We found it?
[14:12] Speaker 6: Turtle's hat where near the waterfall? Well, that's not far.
[14:16] Speaker 6: It's only a mile from here. It's still light. Do
[14:18] Speaker 6: you want to come with us and look for him, mister.
[14:19] Speaker 8: Carter, Yes, I think I do.
[14:34] Speaker 7: Oh my god, Oh boy.
[14:37] Speaker 8: There there there's the hat, mister Manstead, in that bush.
[14:41] Speaker 6: But what's in the world could Thurtle have been doing
[14:43] Speaker 6: in here? This isn't the trail to the waterfall.
[14:46] Speaker 7: There isn't a trail at all, as far as I'm concerned.
[14:49] Speaker 7: It's a jungle.
[14:50] Speaker 6: It used to be a trail to an old one
[14:52] Speaker 6: room cabin. But there's no reason Thurler would go there.
[14:55] Speaker 7: Well, maybe if we yeall, he'll hear us. He might
[14:57] Speaker 7: be in there with a busted ancho or something.
[14:59] Speaker 8: Go ahead and try.
[15:01] Speaker 7: Burlow, Burlo good gosh, will you listen to that?
[15:11] Speaker 6: Well, that's one reason this is called Echo Valley. The
[15:13] Speaker 6: cliffs around the waterfall down the trail make a perfect
[15:15] Speaker 6: sounding board.
[15:16] Speaker 7: Well, if he didn't hear that, he must be dead.
[15:19] Speaker 8: If there's a cabin in there, we better take a
[15:20] Speaker 8: look at it, right.
[15:22] Speaker 6: I don't see what in the world Thurlough could have
[15:23] Speaker 6: come this way for, but maybe he did. Let's find
[15:26] Speaker 6: out there it is where man? I said, Well, there
[15:41] Speaker 6: are between those two trees see it? Oh, yes, it's
[15:43] Speaker 6: only another forty yards. Well come on then, or scubby wait?
[15:48] Speaker 7: Sure neck?
[15:48] Speaker 8: What is it?
[15:49] Speaker 6: Had?
[15:49] Speaker 8: Bare patch of ground? There? Those footprints Burlough's footprints?
[15:54] Speaker 6: U sure, Scubby? Sure?
[15:56] Speaker 7: I've seen those pointed shoes of his too often not
[15:58] Speaker 7: to recognize the footprints any place.
[16:00] Speaker 8: Come on, Nick, Yes, yes, I'm coming. There was a
[16:07] Speaker 8: tall man, isn't this, Scubby.
[16:08] Speaker 7: He's a tall man like I'm Henry Ford. He's about
[16:11] Speaker 7: five feet five. Why I thought it.
[16:14] Speaker 8: Well, never mind, there's a cabin.
[16:16] Speaker 7: Gosh, it doesn't look as if it had been opened
[16:18] Speaker 7: in years.
[16:18] Speaker 6: But it hasn't that I know of.
[16:20] Speaker 7: But there are Thermow's footprints going right up to the.
[16:22] Speaker 8: Door, and somebody's opened the door recently. Look at these
[16:26] Speaker 8: broken spider waves around the door jam. It won't open
[16:30] Speaker 8: now here. Let me try it aught open without any trouble.
[16:34] Speaker 7: Yeah, but it doesn't budge.
[16:37] Speaker 6: That's strange. Let's take a look through the window.
[16:41] Speaker 8: The window was boarded over, boards haven't been touched.
[16:45] Speaker 6: I kneeled the window up myself three years ago.
[16:48] Speaker 4: Nobody came here.
[16:49] Speaker 8: Seeing that someone has come here Thurlough, and he must
[16:53] Speaker 8: be inside now.
[16:54] Speaker 7: But the window hasn't been touched, and the door is
[16:56] Speaker 7: barred on the inside.
[16:57] Speaker 6: Looks bad. We'd better break the door down.
[16:59] Speaker 8: Suppose we're ol Johnny he used his accident.
[17:01] Speaker 6: That'll be quicker, of course, Johnny smashed the door open
[17:04] Speaker 6: for its back.
[17:05] Speaker 10: Please that door was locked to stay locked.
[17:19] Speaker 6: That doesn't it's open.
[17:20] Speaker 8: You don't mind. I'd like to go in first, of.
[17:22] Speaker 6: Course, it's dark inside here to take my Placehline.
[17:25] Speaker 10: Thanks, there he is Furlough.
[17:30] Speaker 6: He's dead he came here, bolted himself in and shot
[17:33] Speaker 6: himself with his own revolver.
[17:35] Speaker 8: Yes, he's dead, all right, and it does look like suicide, doesn't.
[17:55] Speaker 4: No, No, Missus Jim couldn't have killed him.
[18:00] Speaker 3: He told that he couldn't help.
[18:03] Speaker 8: I'm sorry, Missus Soler. I wouldn't intrude on your grief
[18:06] Speaker 8: if it wasn't necessary. Now, first of all, what kind
[18:11] Speaker 8: of mood was your husband in yesterday morning? Just before
[18:14] Speaker 8: he disappeared?
[18:16] Speaker 3: He was very agitated?
[18:18] Speaker 8: Agitated? Well, do you know any reason why he should
[18:23] Speaker 8: have been?
[18:24] Speaker 3: I think he just found the clue to the identity
[18:26] Speaker 3: of the man he was ticking, the one behind his
[18:29] Speaker 3: plot upset the stock market.
[18:31] Speaker 8: Did he say who it was?
[18:33] Speaker 3: So he just said he'd stumbled on a clue. Had
[18:36] Speaker 3: he been so shocked he could hardly believe the evidence.
[18:40] Speaker 4: That was why he went out into the woods.
[18:42] Speaker 3: He wanted to be alone to think the matter through.
[18:45] Speaker 8: Perhaps his notes will tell us what he's bound.
[18:48] Speaker 9: I thought of that, Nick, after Missus Pearler woke up
[18:50] Speaker 9: and I talked to her while you and Scabby were
[18:52] Speaker 9: out with Missus Manstead. We tried to read his notes,
[18:55] Speaker 9: but they're in some kind of a shorthand that nobody
[18:57] Speaker 9: can read but himself.
[18:59] Speaker 3: I can make it a few words here and there,
[19:01] Speaker 3: but not enough to help.
[19:03] Speaker 8: Well, we'll have another try it later. Please go on.
[19:07] Speaker 3: Well that's almost all, mister Carter. She went out about
[19:11] Speaker 3: ten in the morning. I stayed here in my room reading.
[19:14] Speaker 3: About half an hour later, I thought I heard a
[19:17] Speaker 3: shot all of a sudden, I was terribly frightened.
[19:21] Speaker 8: Frightened, I don't know, it was just a feeling.
[19:25] Speaker 3: Then then I heard the fire off echo of somebody hammering.
[19:30] Speaker 6: It was.
[19:35] Speaker 3: Sounded like somebody hamaring down the lid of a corfin
[19:39] Speaker 3: and I'm positive and meant to.
[19:41] Speaker 4: Stim and probably someone chopping down a tree. She heard me.
[19:49] Speaker 11: Anyway, she went back to a reading and forgot about it,
[19:52] Speaker 11: and around one man said from from the village, this
[19:55] Speaker 11: little town about ten miles from the hills, for Johnny
[19:57] Speaker 11: to come for him in a station.
[19:58] Speaker 8: Way manstead phone. But didn't he fly in by plane yesterday?
[20:02] Speaker 4: Seems not.
[20:04] Speaker 9: The plane was in New York getting a new propeller,
[20:06] Speaker 9: so he took the night train.
[20:08] Speaker 8: Is that so?
[20:09] Speaker 6: Oh?
[20:09] Speaker 7: Ray?
[20:09] Speaker 9: Johnny went to meet in and got here about two thirty.
[20:12] Speaker 9: The rest of the stories just the way he told
[20:13] Speaker 9: it to us. Nick Philoh must have killed himselfing just
[20:17] Speaker 9: given any other answers.
[20:19] Speaker 8: I wonder, Patsy, I wonder, hello, yes, speaking, did you
[20:42] Speaker 8: get the dope I wanted?
[20:45] Speaker 4: He was.
[20:46] Speaker 8: And the plane? Then check every airfield within fifty miles
[20:50] Speaker 8: of the city. Yes, I know, what's a big order.
[20:53] Speaker 8: But somebody's playing this game for big stakes. Now that's all.
[20:56] Speaker 8: Call me back when you've learned something.
[20:58] Speaker 6: Oh, hello, Carter, I didn't know anybody was here in
[21:02] Speaker 6: the library.
[21:03] Speaker 8: I took the liberty of phoning New York. I was
[21:05] Speaker 8: trying to check on that mysterious plane that we saw
[21:07] Speaker 8: crash yesterday afternoon.
[21:08] Speaker 6: I see, did you learn anything?
[21:12] Speaker 8: Nothing yet?
[21:13] Speaker 6: You know, I have a theory about that plane, Carter.
[21:16] Speaker 8: I'd be interested to hear, mister Manstead.
[21:18] Speaker 6: Well, we're only one hundred miles from the border, and
[21:20] Speaker 6: in the past planes engaged in smuggling aliens into this
[21:23] Speaker 6: country have landed in this region. Now, I'm willing to
[21:25] Speaker 6: wager this chap who was so anxious to avoid being seen,
[21:28] Speaker 6: was engaged in doing something like that.
[21:31] Speaker 8: Certainly sounds plausible. Okay, oh yesku.
[21:35] Speaker 7: Me, oh there you are, oh top of the morning
[21:38] Speaker 7: te of mister manste Edward morning say, I was looking
[21:40] Speaker 7: for the two of you or a stranger townted a
[21:42] Speaker 7: two of his manner down at the landing waiting in
[21:44] Speaker 7: your launch, mister Manstead. They want to get started down
[21:46] Speaker 7: the lake to bring in the body of that flier
[21:48] Speaker 7: who who was so unlucky when he failed out of
[21:52] Speaker 7: his plane yesterday.
[21:53] Speaker 6: Of course you're coming with us, aren't you.
[21:55] Speaker 8: Carter, He hasn't it. I'm just as interested as you
[21:58] Speaker 8: are to see if your theory turns out to be right.
[22:00] Speaker 7: Oh what about Patsy? Shall I go find her?
[22:02] Speaker 8: I don't know. It'scuby. She's staying here in the lodge
[22:03] Speaker 8: with missus Thurlough. They're going to spend the morning going
[22:05] Speaker 8: over Thurlough's notes trying to decipher them.
[22:07] Speaker 7: Well, let's get going. I want to get back in
[22:09] Speaker 7: time to fall a story to my paper.
[22:20] Speaker 3: I was afraid.
[22:21] Speaker 4: It's no use, miss Please just call me Patsy.
[22:24] Speaker 3: It's just impossible to read these notes of Jim Patty.
[22:28] Speaker 3: They're not only in his own shorthand, but most of
[22:30] Speaker 3: them are in code too.
[22:32] Speaker 11: Here's something that seems as it might mean something. See
[22:35] Speaker 11: it says, I can h be it h C.
[22:43] Speaker 3: How do you believe? I can hardly believe it? Yeah,
[22:46] Speaker 3: of course that's what it means.
[22:47] Speaker 4: And here's the more.
[22:48] Speaker 11: It's Clara, Shall I tell Nanstead what I'm know? The
[22:54] Speaker 11: next line better not instead, must get back to New York.
[23:00] Speaker 11: Well her, that's clear enough.
[23:01] Speaker 3: But the next line my life m d Indeed, that
[23:07] Speaker 3: doesn't mean anything to me.
[23:10] Speaker 9: My life m v inde. My life may be in danger.
[23:19] Speaker 9: And then there's just one last sentence that he never finished.
[23:23] Speaker 9: Who thinks that the one man in the world. That's
[23:28] Speaker 9: all there is?
[23:29] Speaker 3: Oh, oh, if you don't want to finished.
[23:32] Speaker 11: To think that the one man in the world who
[23:39] Speaker 11: he supposedly good have men.
[23:41] Speaker 3: I can't even make a guess the one man, Missus Thurler.
[23:46] Speaker 3: What's missus Thurler.
[23:48] Speaker 9: We're going to go and take a look at that
[23:49] Speaker 9: cabin now while all the others are away.
[23:52] Speaker 4: I have a theory and we're going to find some
[23:53] Speaker 4: evidence to prove it. It has to be there. It
[23:56] Speaker 4: just has to be.
[23:58] Speaker 7: My Hello, Nick, my friend, Hey, what's troubling you? You've
[24:12] Speaker 7: been sitting out here on this rock for an hour
[24:14] Speaker 7: ever since we got back, looking mean enough to bite
[24:17] Speaker 7: your grandmother.
[24:18] Speaker 8: Scubby, That poor devil of an aviator whose body we
[24:21] Speaker 8: brought in was murdered, and Thurlow was murdered. And I
[24:24] Speaker 8: can't prove.
[24:25] Speaker 7: It, But Nick, couldn't you be wrong? The aviator certainly
[24:28] Speaker 7: looked like a natural accident, and Thurlough, if I ever
[24:31] Speaker 7: saw a case, look more like suicidal. I don't know
[24:34] Speaker 7: where it.
[24:34] Speaker 8: Was, That's just it. The aviator, I can explain. Someone
[24:38] Speaker 8: slipped through the woods, reached him before we did, climbed
[24:40] Speaker 8: the tree. He was caught in and strangled in with
[24:42] Speaker 8: the shroud lines and his parachute while pretending to help read.
[24:45] Speaker 7: But Thurlough his own footprints leading into the cabin, the
[24:48] Speaker 7: window boarded over and the door bolted on the inside.
[24:51] Speaker 7: If somebody killed him, well how did they get out?
[24:53] Speaker 8: I don't know, Skeby. Isn't possible. And it was done.
[24:58] Speaker 8: I'm going to break it. Thanks, Goby. What's that in
[25:01] Speaker 8: your hand?
[25:02] Speaker 6: All?
[25:03] Speaker 7: Just a shiny new nail I picked up somewhere. Somebody
[25:05] Speaker 7: must have been fixing something.
[25:07] Speaker 8: Now, said she heard the echo of hammer blows in
[25:11] Speaker 8: the morning her husband died.
[25:14] Speaker 7: Yeah, said, they sounded like somebody hammering down the lid.
[25:17] Speaker 6: Of a coffin.
[25:18] Speaker 7: I'm sure have imagination.
[25:20] Speaker 8: But that's just what she did here.
[25:22] Speaker 6: Huh.
[25:23] Speaker 8: She heard the echoes of somebody nailing down the lid
[25:26] Speaker 8: of a coffin.
[25:42] Speaker 4: But there must be a clue. There must be.
[25:44] Speaker 3: But we've been all over the cabin inside not a
[25:47] Speaker 3: dozen times now, Pappy. If there was anything here, we'd
[25:50] Speaker 3: have found them.
[25:52] Speaker 9: Somehow, your husband was murdered here and his body left
[25:54] Speaker 9: inside his cabin, so it would look like suicide. I'm
[25:58] Speaker 9: going to find out how the murderer goes out, leaving
[26:00] Speaker 9: the door and window bolted, or or die.
[26:03] Speaker 12: I'm afraid you are much more likely to die, Patsy. Oh,
[26:06] Speaker 12: mister mint, Yes, mister Man's dead. After we returned to
[26:10] Speaker 12: the lodge and I learned the two of you had
[26:11] Speaker 12: disappeared in this direction, I thought I'd better find out
[26:14] Speaker 12: what you.
[26:14] Speaker 6: Were up to.
[26:15] Speaker 9: You you killed my husband, of course he did. Who
[26:18] Speaker 9: else could your husband meant? By the one man in
[26:20] Speaker 9: the world, he'd never have believed guilty. He was Jim's friend.
[26:25] Speaker 11: That's what he wanted you to think. He pretended to
[26:28] Speaker 11: be a friend so he could always keep checking what
[26:30] Speaker 11: your husband learned. And he invited you both here though
[26:32] Speaker 11: he could commit murder if he decided it was necessary.
[26:35] Speaker 6: A very interesting theory. But I'm afraid I can't give
[26:38] Speaker 6: you a chance to tell it to anyone else. Johnny
[26:40] Speaker 6: right here, mister, come inside and close the door.
[26:43] Speaker 4: What are you going to do? He thinks he's going
[26:45] Speaker 4: to kill us. He hasn't got that gun in his
[26:47] Speaker 4: hand for fun, Johnny.
[26:49] Speaker 6: The old mind shaft is close by now. If these
[26:51] Speaker 6: two ladies out walking had the misfortune to stumble into it,
[26:54] Speaker 6: it would be very traggic, wouldn't it.
[26:56] Speaker 8: Lots of people fall down old mine shaft they do.
[27:01] Speaker 6: And I'm afraid another such accident is about to happen.
[27:04] Speaker 3: You can't get away with it, mister Man said, Nick.
[27:06] Speaker 4: Carter won't let you.
[27:07] Speaker 6: Well. Perhaps even clever mister Carter may have to have
[27:10] Speaker 6: an accident. Help me silent him, Johnny quickly?
[27:16] Speaker 10: Right now?
[27:16] Speaker 6: Johnny knocked them, both of them. Keep him quiet, all right?
[27:19] Speaker 6: Caller you corner, Johnny, killum.
[27:29] Speaker 8: Johnny, put down that axe or I'll shoot yestead. I'm
[27:36] Speaker 8: afraid show that's it either of you hurt.
[27:40] Speaker 4: No, Nick came just in time.
[27:45] Speaker 8: How did I know? Man said?
[27:46] Speaker 6: Was a murder room?
[27:47] Speaker 8: I knew that from the time we found this cabin,
[27:49] Speaker 8: but it took an echo to prove it. The echo,
[27:52] Speaker 8: Missus Thurlough that you said sounded like someone hammering.
[27:56] Speaker 3: But I don't understand.
[27:57] Speaker 8: Scotty's bringing Range Thompson. As soon as they get here,
[28:00] Speaker 8: I think I'll be able to clear up a lot
[28:01] Speaker 8: of mysteries. The manste was behind the plot that Thurlow uncovered.
[28:14] Speaker 8: He invited Thurlow here in order to find out what
[28:16] Speaker 8: he knew discovered. Thurlough had evidence that would tell.
[28:19] Speaker 6: Him the truth.
[28:20] Speaker 8: Therefore decided to eliminate Thurlough. But mister Carter Manster didn't
[28:24] Speaker 8: get in until after Thurlow was dead. He came but trained.
[28:28] Speaker 7: Ranger Thompson's right, Nick.
[28:30] Speaker 10: He appeared to come by train.
[28:32] Speaker 8: Actually he flew in the night before in a plane
[28:34] Speaker 8: whose pilot was used to taking big fees for keeping
[28:37] Speaker 8: his mouth shut. That was the plane that we saw crash.
[28:40] Speaker 8: Something delayed from leaving in time to avoid us, and
[28:42] Speaker 8: in the pilot's effort to keep away from us. Well
[28:45] Speaker 8: we all know what.
[28:45] Speaker 11: Happened, But Nick, why is the pilot murdered?
[28:48] Speaker 8: That was Johnny's work. As soon as Thurler saw the crash.
[28:51] Speaker 8: He sent Johnny by a secret trail to the woods
[28:53] Speaker 8: to make sure the pilot didn't live to talk, otherwise
[28:56] Speaker 8: his murder scheme would have collapsed. Isn't that right, Johnny?
[28:59] Speaker 9: Yes, So Manstead flew here the night before he murdered Pellow.
[29:03] Speaker 9: In the morning, when Thurler left the house, he and
[29:05] Speaker 9: Johnny waylaid him.
[29:06] Speaker 8: Is that it, Nick, That's it, That's it. It brought
[29:09] Speaker 8: him to the cabin here. Manstead put on his vixen
[29:12] Speaker 8: shoes and made a trail of footprints. Then they killed Thurlow,
[29:15] Speaker 8: put his shoes back on him, and left him in
[29:17] Speaker 8: the locked cabin. A clear case of suicide. But Manstead
[29:22] Speaker 8: made a mistake there. His footprints were too far apart.
[29:26] Speaker 8: They were the steps of a tall man. When Scubby
[29:29] Speaker 8: said Thurlow was a short man, I began to suspect.
[29:32] Speaker 13: Well, it certainly does sound plausible, mister Carter, But you
[29:36] Speaker 13: still got to convince me Manstead could get out of
[29:39] Speaker 13: that cabin and leave the door barred from the inside.
[29:43] Speaker 8: Make it good, Nick, Johnny knows the answer. You all
[29:46] Speaker 8: remember that missus Thurler said she heard the echo of
[29:48] Speaker 8: hammer blowers.
[29:49] Speaker 4: You mean she really did hear someone hammered exactly.
[29:53] Speaker 8: This is a small cabin with a roof lightly nailed
[29:55] Speaker 8: in place. I'll look up there, what's that flashing in
[29:59] Speaker 8: the sun rooks like nail heads.
[30:02] Speaker 7: Somebody's hammered new nails into that roof all along this side.
[30:05] Speaker 4: NA is that the clue I was looking for?
[30:08] Speaker 8: That's the clue you were looking for, Scobby and I
[30:09] Speaker 8: saw it yesterday, but we weren't smart enough to know
[30:11] Speaker 8: what it meant. Here, I'll take Johnny's axe and push
[30:14] Speaker 8: the blade in onto the eaves and cry upward, like
[30:19] Speaker 8: the whole roof's lifting up.
[30:21] Speaker 7: Well, blow me down.
[30:22] Speaker 9: Nenston and Johnny pried up the flimsy roof before they
[30:25] Speaker 9: killed herlow. Then leaving the door pod, they climbed out,
[30:29] Speaker 9: and Johnny nailed the.
[30:30] Speaker 8: Roof back in the place right. So they were hammering
[30:33] Speaker 8: the lid on the coffin, so to speak, Thurlough's coffin,
[30:36] Speaker 8: and due to the curious echoing qualities of the rocks,
[30:39] Speaker 8: the sound carried to the lodge and missus Thurlell heard it.
[30:42] Speaker 8: I didn't think it meant anything until I noticed the
[30:44] Speaker 8: nail scubby picked up someplace. The nail Johnny must have dropped,
[30:48] Speaker 8: and then I remembered the hammering sound. Mister Thurler spoke out,
[30:52] Speaker 8: and suddenly the whole thing was clear.
[30:54] Speaker 13: Well, it sure wouldn't have been clear to me if
[30:56] Speaker 13: you hadn't explained it, mister Carter.
[30:58] Speaker 8: I certainly wouldn't ever have worked it out. It was
[31:00] Speaker 8: just an echo for a crew all.
[31:02] Speaker 7: But that was an unusual echo. Remember how cleverly it answered.
[31:06] Speaker 9: And when it comes to answer, scuby, Nick Carter is
[31:08] Speaker 9: a man who gets them.
[31:27] Speaker 5: This was another strange experience of Nick Catter called the
[31:31] Speaker 5: Echo of Death or Nick Carter and the fatom Clue.
[31:34] Speaker 5: The Curious Adventures of Nick Catter, Master Detective are brought
[31:37] Speaker 5: to you every Monday night at nine thirty Eastern wartimes.
[31:41] Speaker 5: We'll let Nick himself tell you about next week's story.
[31:43] Speaker 5: What let's be about?
[31:44] Speaker 6: Nick?
[31:45] Speaker 8: I call it Death across the Tracks. It began with
[31:47] Speaker 8: the murder of a detective, a.
[31:48] Speaker 9: Railroad detective who lives in the station alongside the tracks.
[31:51] Speaker 9: He's working on a case, but he had it only
[31:53] Speaker 9: partly solved when he was murdered.
[31:55] Speaker 8: And I picked it up from there, I'll say you.
[31:57] Speaker 4: Did, Nick. You almost picked up a few bullets and bargain.
[32:00] Speaker 4: What the victim did?
[32:02] Speaker 9: You called it death across the tracks? You were right
[32:04] Speaker 9: in more ways than one.
[32:06] Speaker 5: His sons more and more intriguing. And how did wind
[32:08] Speaker 5: up Nick? Well, we'll tell you that next week, but
[32:10] Speaker 5: I can say this much. I had a stroke of luck.
[32:13] Speaker 4: Nick always calls his luck when he uses foresight.
[32:16] Speaker 5: Good Night, folks, Yes, good night folks, and good night
[32:19] Speaker 5: Patsy and Nick. In tonight's strange adventure. Nick Carter was
[32:23] Speaker 5: impersonated by Long Clock. Patsy was impersonated by Helen Choke.
[32:27] Speaker 5: Original music was played by Low White. The entire production
[32:30] Speaker 5: was under the direction of Jack McGregor. Next week, at
[32:45] Speaker 5: half past nine o'clock Eastern wartime, listen to another curious
[32:48] Speaker 5: adventure of Nick Carter entitled.
[32:54] Speaker 8: Nick Conor and the Mystery of the Midnight.
[33:05] Speaker 5: This story is a copyrighted feature of Street and Smith's Publications, Incorporated.
[33:09] Speaker 5: And here's a special note. Beginning next week, Nick Carter
[33:12] Speaker 5: will be heard over most of these same stations on
[33:14] Speaker 5: Mondays at nine thirty pm Eastern wartime. The Cisco Kid
[33:18] Speaker 5: will be presented on Tuesdays at nine thirty pm Eastern wartime.
[33:22] Speaker 8: This is mutual.
[33:34] Speaker 2: Welcome back well beatest of all manhunters may be a
[33:39] Speaker 2: debatable issue. Certainly this point in history there were few
[33:44] Speaker 2: detectives who had more total canonical stories told about them.
[33:49] Speaker 2: Though Nick Harter's history he had changed quite a bit,
[33:54] Speaker 2: as as had his supporting cast. The idea of Nick
[33:59] Speaker 2: carr or as a master detective it's actually a term
[34:05] Speaker 2: of art used for somebody who had a big detective
[34:09] Speaker 2: agency over on the old time Dragnet show. We played
[34:13] Speaker 2: you the Nick Harris cases, and Nick Harris was an
[34:17] Speaker 2: actual master detective, and as there's still a big agency
[34:21] Speaker 2: named after him. Nick Carter as a master detective came
[34:25] Speaker 2: from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century stories, where
[34:31] Speaker 2: he had his own group of detectives under him. In
[34:34] Speaker 2: the radio show, it's not necessarily master detective. Usually he
[34:39] Speaker 2: has at least two sidekicks, which is one more than
[34:43] Speaker 2: most other radio detectives have going. It's worth noting here
[34:47] Speaker 2: the character of Patsy. One of the more interesting facts
[34:50] Speaker 2: here is there was a Patsy in the Nick Carter
[34:53] Speaker 2: stories of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
[34:56] Speaker 1: However, that Patsy was a.
[34:58] Speaker 2: Man well as to today's story itself, I wondered what
[35:04] Speaker 2: would have really happened with that guy jumping out of
[35:07] Speaker 2: the plane so close to the ground, whether he would
[35:11] Speaker 2: have gotten caught in the tree limbs, or he would
[35:13] Speaker 2: have survived even being caught in the tree limbs, because
[35:16] Speaker 2: I don't know if he would have had time to
[35:18] Speaker 2: have his parachute open. If there is any aeronautically minded
[35:22] Speaker 2: person in the audience, love to hear from you on
[35:25] Speaker 2: that one. Overall, this is a pretty solid outing for
[35:30] Speaker 2: Nick Carter, and we've got more of it to come.
[35:34] Speaker 2: We so many great cases. We're gonna have Nick Carter
[35:40] Speaker 2: with us for the next couple of years, and we
[35:42] Speaker 2: will try and get you some more information on actors
[35:45] Speaker 2: and things of that sort as we continue to enjoy
[35:49] Speaker 2: this character. All right, well, listener comments and feedback, And
[35:54] Speaker 2: we have a new review of the iTunes app, this
[35:59] Speaker 2: one from only Emmy, who writes Adam does a great
[36:04] Speaker 2: job on the shows and the app is the same,
[36:06] Speaker 2: easy to use and gets played all the time. Well,
[36:09] Speaker 2: we're glad you're enjoying the app and enjoying the program.
[36:12] Speaker 7: Emmy.
[36:13] Speaker 2: That will actually finish our program for today. We will
[36:17] Speaker 2: be back tomorrow. We will wrap up yours truly, Johnny Dollar,
[36:21] Speaker 2: and then join us back here next Thursday for another
[36:24] Speaker 2: episode of Nick Carter Maaster Detective. In the meantime, send
