[4:00] Speaker 5: I just said it was important you had to see it. Hey,

[4:28] Speaker 8: Oh you know how it goes on again, off again.
[4:30] Speaker 8: Put in a full month playing bar boy at Ziggy's
[4:33] Speaker 8: joint place down in South.
[4:34] Speaker 5: MAINI you know, hmm what happened there?
[4:36] Speaker 7: Business fell off and the ZIGGI he said he had
[4:38] Speaker 7: to let me go and.
[4:39] Speaker 8: Kind of thin ever since, I'm hustling programs out of
[4:42] Speaker 8: the racetrack right now. It's not too bad. I can't
[4:45] Speaker 8: afford to bet, but I get to see the races free.
[4:47] Speaker 8: You can't have everything, I guess.
[4:49] Speaker 4: I understand you're little worried about something, Red, anything serious.
[4:52] Speaker 8: Well, yeah, it might be my guy's telling Ramri on
[4:55] Speaker 8: the phone, or wouldn't do me no good if I
[4:57] Speaker 8: got out, I mean me talking to you about it.
[4:59] Speaker 7: You know, he'd probably tie a can of my tell

[5:34] Speaker 8: I heard him a couple other guys talking about it
[5:36] Speaker 8: one night, don Ziggy's having a couple of beers.
[5:40] Speaker 7: I guess they didn't think.
[5:41] Speaker 4: I could hear him what they had to say.
[5:43] Speaker 8: This guy Allen was running off about how good he
[5:45] Speaker 8: was doing, how many places he knocked over in the
[5:48] Speaker 8: last couple of months, how much stuff he took.
[5:50] Speaker 5: What's he looked like, Rin? Oh?
[5:52] Speaker 7: But he average about my high, dark hair, a.

[6:15] Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll show you. I'm passed around ball.
[6:18] Speaker 5: Oh yeah, here you go.
[6:20] Speaker 4: Oh could these burglary jobs Allan's supposed to be pulling? Red?
[6:26] Speaker 4: Where's he working them? Do you know? Then?
[6:29] Speaker 9: No?
[6:29] Speaker 7: I guess are long all over town? I was bored? Sure,
[6:33] Speaker 7: good hammer.
[6:34] Speaker 4: When you ever heard him talking to his friends? Did
[6:35] Speaker 4: he mention any jobs in particular that he pulled?
[6:38] Speaker 8: No, he's working hard on all that for a part.

[6:50] Speaker 8: Usually Jimmy or a small bench bar usually goes through
[6:53] Speaker 8: the windows.
[6:53] Speaker 5: He worked alone? Uh huh?
[6:55] Speaker 7: Strictly there's French breads and nice and fresh.
[6:59] Speaker 4: Yeah, where's that? I'm staying in town? Do you know Red?

[7:12] Speaker 4: Jeff Allen is that supposed to be his right name?
[7:14] Speaker 8: Red Fire as I know, uh huh. I ain't met
[7:17] Speaker 8: him a couple of times. He hung around Ziggy's space
[7:20] Speaker 8: when he first come to town. Of course I didn't
[7:22] Speaker 8: know what he was up to.
[7:23] Speaker 4: Then you don't well enough to talk to him?
[7:26] Speaker 8: Well just about Yeah, I have buddies with him or anything.
[7:29] Speaker 8: That's why I don't want to get out. You know,
[7:32] Speaker 8: he gets the word I'm on your team. I'm a
[7:34] Speaker 8: dad duck. I don't think he waste a minute calumb me.
[7:36] Speaker 5: You don't have to worry, Red. We'll keep it quiet.
[7:39] Speaker 5: Why did you hear anything else? Or is that just
[7:40] Speaker 5: about the size of him?
[7:41] Speaker 7: No, Mar's just about that far.
[7:44] Speaker 8: I'll keep near the ground if I get any more rumbled.
[7:47] Speaker 8: How passer dome? Wow, I guess you know. I really
[7:52] Speaker 8: hate to talk about it.
[7:53] Speaker 5: What's that Red?
[7:54] Speaker 9: Well?
[7:54] Speaker 7: I mean how bad things have been running lately? You know,
[7:56] Speaker 7: since I got laid off.
[7:58] Speaker 6: He is.
[8:00] Speaker 8: So like mad with the programs down the track and
[8:02] Speaker 8: bring in a whole lot though, And I allows you
[8:05] Speaker 8: land lady, had I raised my.
[8:06] Speaker 7: Rent last week?
[8:08] Speaker 4: How much can you use? Red? Oh?
[8:10] Speaker 7: Yeah, no, sighs. Anything and I'll just let alone. Maybe
[8:12] Speaker 7: something helped me hold home.
[8:14] Speaker 5: The only thing I have is a twenty Joe, you've
[8:16] Speaker 5: got any change?
[8:17] Speaker 7: My thanks? So I'm matter of trying to be fine.
[8:18] Speaker 7: That's plenty. I sure appreciate that.
[8:20] Speaker 8: Oh yeah, wow, real good Hamburger steak.
[8:25] Speaker 7: Johnny puts out. I gotta get go, and File's got me.
[8:28] Speaker 4: Down the track all right, Red, thanks a lot. Do
[8:30] Speaker 4: there's anything else call us? Huh? You got our number?
[8:32] Speaker 6: Sure?
[8:32] Speaker 7: Anything, I'll stay right on. You want me for anything, holler?
[8:36] Speaker 10: Huh.
[8:36] Speaker 7: I'm still the same place, right, Zack's alot, see you there?
[8:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, think it easy? Red?
[8:41] Speaker 5: Yeah, I read he's getting a little expensive. Huh.
[8:46] Speaker 4: He's probably been having a rough time. But he looked hungry.
[8:48] Speaker 5: I mean sure he did grab that twenty dollars bill
[8:50] Speaker 5: like his life depended on you. I went to buy
[8:52] Speaker 5: some new wool socks.
[8:53] Speaker 4: Were they Well, i'll split it with you. Be worth
[8:55] Speaker 4: more than twenty bucks if the tip pays off.
[8:57] Speaker 5: Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind giving him a
[8:59] Speaker 5: twenty by books is worth it. But look at this year.
[9:02] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, check for the food.
[9:04] Speaker 5: Yeah. I think the least he could have done was
[9:05] Speaker 5: pay for his own line.
[9:13] Speaker 4: By and large, the character of the informant in fact
[9:15] Speaker 4: or fiction isn't generally regarded with too much sympathy. To
[9:19] Speaker 4: most people, the informant's nothing more than a stool pigeon,
[9:22] Speaker 4: a squealer, somebody who with a very active informing commits
[9:26] Speaker 4: a sin against a supposedly popular, unwritten law. Well, it's
[9:30] Speaker 4: obvious that this isn't always so, because in the interests
[9:33] Speaker 4: of law enforcement and justice, which means the betterment of
[9:36] Speaker 4: the community, the informant very often plays a major role.
[9:40] Speaker 4: Year after year, informants are responsible for the apprehension and
[9:44] Speaker 4: conviction of many hundreds of criminals, people who rob and
[9:47] Speaker 4: sheet and commit murder, crimes that are obviously far deadlier
[9:51] Speaker 4: than informing. As for the mechanics of law enforcement, at
[9:55] Speaker 4: the level of the working detective, the informant is considered
[9:58] Speaker 4: virtually indispensable. It's been said before by peace officers, and
[10:03] Speaker 4: it'll probably be said again quite a few times. If
[10:06] Speaker 4: your job is catching criminals and enforcing the law, this
[10:09] Speaker 4: is the first rule you have to learn. The working
[10:11] Speaker 4: detective is no better than his informants. Two twelve PM.
[10:16] Speaker 4: Ben and I had no idea if the information we'd
[10:18] Speaker 4: gotten from Red Smalley was authentic or not, but it
[10:21] Speaker 4: had to be checked out. We went back to the
[10:23] Speaker 4: office and had Frank Cunningham and R and I check
[10:25] Speaker 4: on Jeff Allen. We also had the Stat's office make
[10:28] Speaker 4: a run for us on suspects with similar mos. Then
[10:31] Speaker 4: we started to page through reports of burglaries which had
[10:33] Speaker 4: occurred throughout the city during the past three months. How
[10:41] Speaker 4: you doing over there? Anything at know?
[10:42] Speaker 5: Not too much? Wait a minute, maybe this might be
[10:45] Speaker 5: one of'em.
[10:47] Speaker 4: Here, let me see.
[10:50] Speaker 5: Home in Holland Beck Park neighborhood. Burger's MO matches out
[10:53] Speaker 5: in a time Element two happened six weeks ago, winnowing.
[10:56] Speaker 5: The second floor of the house was pride open. They
[10:58] Speaker 5: took furs and money twenty three dollars.
[11:00] Speaker 4: Uh huh, that's the only one you found.
[11:01] Speaker 5: Another one here it took out a minute ago. M
[11:05] Speaker 5: was pretty much the same on this and too. The
[11:06] Speaker 5: only thing different is the night of the week it happened,
[11:08] Speaker 5: and this one's a Thursday. That when there's a Sunday.
[11:11] Speaker 5: It checks out pretty close.
[11:12] Speaker 4: Otherwise. The only one thing I can't figure, what's that? Well.
[11:15] Speaker 4: Allan's supposed to have been in the city for at
[11:16] Speaker 4: least six months. According to Red, he's working a job
[11:20] Speaker 4: maybe once a week, once every ten days or so.
[11:22] Speaker 4: Now you got two reports there. That matches them all. Here,
[11:25] Speaker 4: I've picked out two more from that other pile. Seems
[11:27] Speaker 4: to me if he's been working in town for a
[11:29] Speaker 4: couple of months or ought to be more than four
[11:30] Speaker 4: reports on him.
[11:31] Speaker 5: So I got Burglar and Meryl. Oh yeah, Frank, m M.
[11:37] Speaker 5: Jeff Allen, that's all? Now you have huh okay, right, Frank,
[11:43] Speaker 5: thank you? Yeah, Ry, And I got to make on Allen.
[11:46] Speaker 5: He's had one arrest here four years ago in to
[11:48] Speaker 5: veag George. He's a loser out of Michigan, go for burglary,
[11:51] Speaker 5: never been picked up for bergery here though he didn't register,
[11:54] Speaker 5: And that's all.
[11:55] Speaker 4: That's It doesn't seem to jail right to me? Doesn' you?
[11:58] Speaker 5: Not a loose? Ends to figure out?
[12:00] Speaker 4: Wonder if Red was handing us a line on this thing,
[12:01] Speaker 4: why would he Well, maybe he needed that twenty dollars touch.
[12:04] Speaker 4: Maybe this Jeff Allen's an old Palais is read out
[12:06] Speaker 4: of falling out with him. He wants to get in
[12:07] Speaker 4: with him.
[12:08] Speaker 5: This possible? I guess I don't got cha?
[12:11] Speaker 4: Then, Hello, neighbor, what do you saying what's with you?
[12:14] Speaker 4: You're still in that steakhout south in the town.
[12:16] Speaker 5: Yeah, third week?
[12:16] Speaker 7: Sure, getting dell. You two look busy?
[12:18] Speaker 5: What's all this? Oh, we've got a tip on some
[12:20] Speaker 5: prowl artist funny. Get a line on.
[12:23] Speaker 4: Take a look at this three point one wind, Jim,
[12:25] Speaker 4: you run into any jobs recently to stack up like this?
[12:27] Speaker 4: I say we're shooting in the dark on it so far,
[12:30] Speaker 4: I don't know if we got anything or not.
[12:32] Speaker 5: I'd say you got it regular report in the seventy
[12:34] Speaker 5: seven division this morning. Happened to check it when I
[12:36] Speaker 5: was out there, same amo, Is this same everything?
[12:42] Speaker 4: Four fifty five pm, Ben and I went down the
[12:44] Speaker 4: hall to the record bureau and picked up a couple
[12:46] Speaker 4: of mugshots of the suspect, Jefferson Allen. Then we drove
[12:49] Speaker 4: out to the thirteen twenty two Club on North Ferris
[12:51] Speaker 4: Avenue in the Silver Lake District, the neighborhood bar where
[12:54] Speaker 4: Allen spent most of his time, according to our informant,
[12:57] Speaker 4: read Smally. We staked out in the car down the
[13:00] Speaker 4: where we could keep an eye on the front door
[13:01] Speaker 4: of the bar and still not look suspicious. Between five
[13:04] Speaker 4: and seven thirty pm, we watched at least two dozen
[13:07] Speaker 4: customers entering or leaving the bar, but none of them
[13:09] Speaker 4: came close to Alan's description eight pm nothing. By the
[13:14] Speaker 4: time where we relieved on steak out at eleven pm,
[13:16] Speaker 4: Alan still had failed to show. Late the following afternoon,
[13:20] Speaker 4: we were back at the same spot watching for a
[13:22] Speaker 4: sign of the suspect. Six forty eight pm.
[13:26] Speaker 5: How are you fixed for smokes?
[13:28] Speaker 4: Oh? I think I got a couple left. Yeah, here
[13:30] Speaker 4: you go.
[13:33] Speaker 8: I got a light here, yeah, six.
[13:42] Speaker 5: Hey you have a look Joe gray hat, dark suit.
[13:47] Speaker 5: He just came out of the bar.
[13:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's coming this way. Yeah, I'll buy it.
[13:51] Speaker 5: That's him getting in that blue sid down.
[13:53] Speaker 4: I don't press Himlet's gi him a good leave, right,
[13:55] Speaker 4: just get him in. What do you think Let's wait
[14:01] Speaker 4: a minute, Yeah, okay, we'll clear all right? You got
[14:07] Speaker 4: him spotted?
[14:07] Speaker 5: Yeah, no trouble. That's a funny one. Huh. I wonder
[14:10] Speaker 5: why we didn't see him go in and bore.
[14:11] Speaker 4: I don't know. It might be a delivery entrance in
[14:13] Speaker 4: the back of the place we could have missed.
[14:14] Speaker 5: Can you make out that Licen's number?
[14:16] Speaker 4: Can you plod just a little? That's good? Yeah, let's

[15:21] Speaker 5: The same guy owns a bar, isn't it is? Adam
[15:23] Speaker 5: must know him.
[15:23] Speaker 4: Pretty well well enough to use his car. Wonder what
[15:25] Speaker 4: the pitch is there? You checked on, Carpenter, didn't you?
[15:28] Speaker 7: Yeah?
[15:28] Speaker 5: Clean bill of health, no record? Yeah? Up ahead there
[15:31] Speaker 5: now he's.
[15:31] Speaker 4: Slowing down, Yeah, turning up on the driveway, pull up
[15:35] Speaker 4: under that tree there. Huh right, that's fine, see him,
[15:41] Speaker 4: uh huh getting out, going to that bungle over there,
[15:45] Speaker 4: letting himself in the front door.
[15:47] Speaker 5: No sign of anybody else there. No house was dark
[15:51] Speaker 5: when we drove up, wasn't it. He couldn't be living
[15:53] Speaker 5: there alone.
[15:53] Speaker 4: He might be.
[15:54] Speaker 5: Doesn't make much sense to me. Why would a single
[15:56] Speaker 5: guy get himself.
[15:57] Speaker 4: A house that'd be Let's wait it out. Maybe he'll
[15:59] Speaker 4: come up with the answer. Nine fifteen pm we continued
[16:04] Speaker 4: our stakeout on the bungalow on South Bronson Avenue. A
[16:07] Speaker 4: little more than an hour passed when we saw the
[16:09] Speaker 4: lights go out in the house. The suspect, Jeff Allen,
[16:12] Speaker 4: came out the front door, locked up, got in his
[16:15] Speaker 4: car and drove off. Ben and I followed him. He
[16:18] Speaker 4: drove directly to the bar on North Ferris Avenue, the
[16:21] Speaker 4: thirteen twenty two club. He parked his car and went inside.
[16:24] Speaker 4: Ben and I drove back to the cottage on South
[16:26] Speaker 4: Bronson and let ourselves in through the back door. A
[16:29] Speaker 4: preliminary check of the house failed to give us any
[16:31] Speaker 4: real proof that Allan was the suspect we wanted. The
[16:34] Speaker 4: only possible lead we came up with was an expensive
[16:36] Speaker 4: hunting rifle, which we found stored away in one of
[16:39] Speaker 4: the closets. We copied down the serial number on the gun,
[16:42] Speaker 4: drove to a neighborhood's cigar store, called the office and
[16:45] Speaker 4: asked him to check out the number for us.
[16:47] Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, Marph, we'll wait for the call.
[16:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, how'd you do?
[16:52] Speaker 5: I'm gonna check it through now that call us good.
[16:55] Speaker 4: I'm a little hungry, aren't you? Do you like candy bar?
[16:58] Speaker 5: No, I'm getting a little tired of moun't mind the
[17:00] Speaker 5: square meal out. My back's killing me. Never been to
[17:03] Speaker 5: soaring my life.
[17:04] Speaker 4: What's the matter, you fall?
[17:06] Speaker 5: No, nothing like that. It's my snoring.
[17:07] Speaker 4: Again, snoring? What's that got to do with it?
[17:10] Speaker 5: Almost broke my back. It's a wife's idea. She claims
[17:12] Speaker 5: that I'm sleeping, I roll over on my back and
[17:14] Speaker 5: snores as he keeps your awake all night.
[17:16] Speaker 4: There's not much you can do about it, is it?
[17:18] Speaker 5: Eyah? The wife sawt of something supposed to be an
[17:19] Speaker 5: ald home remedy. She sewed a couple of golf balls
[17:22] Speaker 5: right into the back of my pajamas. You get the
[17:24] Speaker 5: idea behind it. If you roll over on your back,
[17:27] Speaker 5: the golf balls dig into you and you have to
[17:29] Speaker 5: roll over on your side again.
[17:31] Speaker 4: That'll see what happened to you.
[17:32] Speaker 5: Well, I'm a sound sleeper, rolled over on my back
[17:34] Speaker 5: and stayed there, slept on those golf balls all night,
[17:38] Speaker 5: woke up in the morning and like to have died.
[17:40] Speaker 5: But like I snapped a couple of vertebrae.
[17:42] Speaker 4: It must be an easier way to keep you from
[17:44] Speaker 4: sleeping on your back.
[17:45] Speaker 5: Uh, I wouldn't do any good anyhow, George just won't work.
[17:48] Speaker 5: I snowed just as loud sleeping on my side.
[17:51] Speaker 4: I get it. Hello, yahmer is Joe Friday.
[18:00] Speaker 7: W six three four four?
[18:03] Speaker 4: Yeah? That checks? That was a serial in Lamorn? When
[18:05] Speaker 4: was that?
[18:06] Speaker 5: Huh?
[18:07] Speaker 4: Yeah? Y'all camer Thanks bye. I think maybe we got
[18:13] Speaker 4: a break. Yeah, they got to make on the gun
[18:15] Speaker 4: we found, is it registered Dallen? No, it was taken
[18:17] Speaker 4: in a burglary two months ago.
[18:29] Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
[18:32] Speaker 3: force in action.
[18:41] Speaker 4: Tuesday night, April seventeenth, ten thirty eight pm, we got
[18:44] Speaker 4: additional information from the office on the hunting rifle that
[18:47] Speaker 4: we'd found in the bungalow to which we trailed the suspect,
[18:49] Speaker 4: Jefferson Allen, a few hours earlier.
[18:51] Speaker 7: The gun was.
[18:52] Speaker 4: Registered to a mister Robert Lsal thirty oh eight Bush Street.
[18:56] Speaker 4: The rifle, along with three hundred dollars in jewelry and
[18:58] Speaker 4: forty eight dollars in cash, had been taken from LaSalle's
[19:01] Speaker 4: home two months before during his family's absence. The burglar's
[19:05] Speaker 4: method of operation matched Allen's alleged MO. Exactly ten forty
[19:10] Speaker 4: five PM. After arranging for a stakeout to be placed
[19:13] Speaker 4: on the bungalow on Bronson Avenue, Ben and I drove
[19:16] Speaker 4: to the thirteen twenty two club on North Ferris, where
[19:18] Speaker 4: we located the suspect, jeff Allen.
[19:21] Speaker 5: Yes, sir, that's correct, sergeant. I'm from back in Michigan originally.
[19:24] Speaker 5: I've been out here about six months now. I think
[19:26] Speaker 5: I'm gonna like it. Sure can't beat this weather. You've
[19:29] Speaker 5: been working here at the bory ever since you got
[19:31] Speaker 5: in town? Is that right? No, not quite. I've been
[19:33] Speaker 5: here for about four months. Kind of a handyman job.
[19:36] Speaker 5: I helped the bartender when I can keep the storeroom
[19:39] Speaker 5: in order see everything ship shaped?
[19:40] Speaker 3: You know?
[19:41] Speaker 4: Uh? Have you ever been in Los Angeles before, Allen?
[19:43] Speaker 5: Yeah, just once before, a couple of years ago. It
[19:46] Speaker 5: wasn't so good. Then. Jobs were hard to get I
[19:49] Speaker 5: ran into a little bit of trouble. Finally went back
[19:51] Speaker 5: east again.
[19:52] Speaker 4: I see, what was this trouble you had?
[19:54] Speaker 2: Well?
[19:54] Speaker 5: As I say, jobs were pretty hard to come by then.
[19:57] Speaker 5: I kept checking around, but I couldn't find anything. When
[20:00] Speaker 5: so good. I finally got picked up on a bag
[20:02] Speaker 5: charge and spent a couple of weeks at the county.
[20:05] Speaker 5: When I got out, I figured the best thing was
[20:07] Speaker 5: head back east again. A lot better this time though,
[20:09] Speaker 5: I'm doing okay. See, I couldn't get you anything. No,
[20:14] Speaker 5: there's something maybe you'd like to talk to me about,
[20:16] Speaker 5: anything I can help you with. It's a routine checkup.
[20:18] Speaker 7: We're on.
[20:19] Speaker 5: Got a few more questions for you, if you don't mind,
[20:21] Speaker 5: for sure, let's take one of these booths back here. Huh,
[20:24] Speaker 5: might as well be comfortable?
[20:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, go ahead?
[20:31] Speaker 7: You sure I couldn't got you anything?
[20:32] Speaker 5: A bottle of beer or coke? Maybe? No, you have
[20:35] Speaker 5: your family out here with you all and your wife. No,
[20:37] Speaker 5: I'm not married. Sorry, and I haven't taken the plunge yet.
[20:41] Speaker 5: Figure there's plenty of time for that. Hard enough to
[20:43] Speaker 5: keep myself going these days, let alone a family. Yeah,
[20:46] Speaker 5: I know what you mean.
[20:47] Speaker 4: Have you ever been arrested before, Alan, I mean, other
[20:50] Speaker 4: than that bag charge you mentioned, you ever served any
[20:51] Speaker 4: big time Yeah?
[20:53] Speaker 5: Matter of fact, I have back in Michigan. Pretty dumb trick.
[20:56] Speaker 5: I got in trouble as a kid, burglary served all
[20:59] Speaker 5: my time, though I don't know my day. I'm washed
[21:01] Speaker 5: up with that stuff a long time ago. It just
[21:02] Speaker 5: doesn't pay that so.
[21:04] Speaker 4: Uh. Then that last time there was any trouble was
[21:06] Speaker 4: that vague charge? Is that it?
[21:07] Speaker 5: Yes, sir, that's it. As I say, I'm all washed
[21:09] Speaker 5: up with that stuff. It doesn't pay off at all.
[21:11] Speaker 5: I got wise to that. Mm hm. Lead to hear it, Allen,
[21:13] Speaker 5: And you figure you're going to stay on here, then
[21:15] Speaker 5: make this your permanent home. Yeah, I think I might.
[21:18] Speaker 5: It's sure like the weather job suits me too. Boss
[21:21] Speaker 5: even lets me use his car once in a while.
[21:23] Speaker 5: Were you nice? Huh?
[21:24] Speaker 4: Yeah? Where are you living now? You got an apartment
[21:26] Speaker 4: in the neighborhood here?
[21:26] Speaker 5: Yeah, I got an apartment, a nice little place. Not
[21:29] Speaker 5: exactly in the neighborhood, though, it's out in West Hollywood,
[21:32] Speaker 5: right on a bus line. No trouble getting into work.
[21:34] Speaker 5: It's a small apartment or abouts in West Hollywood. You
[21:37] Speaker 5: mind giving us the address? Oh, it's on Norwich Avenue.
[21:40] Speaker 5: Why do yes, It's part of this routine check. We
[21:42] Speaker 5: have to make you mind very much if we drive
[21:44] Speaker 5: out there with you. I don't look the place over. No,
[21:46] Speaker 5: I don't mind. I mean if you figure I need
[21:48] Speaker 5: checking out, I just assume clear it up now. I
[21:50] Speaker 5: got nothing to hide. Do you want me to get
[21:51] Speaker 5: my coat?
[21:52] Speaker 4: No, it's all right.
[21:55] Speaker 5: Say I should be back here in an hour or so.
[21:58] Speaker 5: What do you think I mean, it's just a route
[22:00] Speaker 5: tea check. It won't take long with.
[22:01] Speaker 4: Them, No, not too long. I suppose you can figure
[22:03] Speaker 4: that better than weekend.
[22:04] Speaker 5: How do you mean he.
[22:05] Speaker 4: Said you had nothing to hide? Eleven twenty pm we
[22:10] Speaker 4: drove the suspect, Jeff Allen, to his apartment on Norwich Avenue.
[22:14] Speaker 4: It was more than two and a half miles from
[22:16] Speaker 4: the bungalow on South Bronson where we followed Alan earlier
[22:18] Speaker 4: that night, and where we located the stolen hunting rifle.
[22:21] Speaker 4: While Ben and I made a thorough check of the apartment.
[22:24] Speaker 4: Allan sat relaxed in an easy chair. Ben and I
[22:27] Speaker 4: covered everything in the apartment, but there was no evidence
[22:29] Speaker 4: of any loot taking in the burglaries.
[22:32] Speaker 5: That's about it. Joe checked everything. Okay, that's about it.
[22:35] Speaker 5: I sergeant, you fellas want a beer before we go
[22:37] Speaker 5: back to the club.
[22:38] Speaker 4: Just one or two more questions, Allan than I. Anything
[22:40] Speaker 4: will wash this thing up.
[22:41] Speaker 5: Sure sertain.
[22:43] Speaker 4: Do you rent some other place in town? Another house
[22:45] Speaker 4: or an apartment?
[22:46] Speaker 5: Maybe another place? No, why would I do that? This
[22:48] Speaker 5: is my apartment. This is where I live. Why do
[22:50] Speaker 5: you ask that?
[22:51] Speaker 4: About six o'clock to night, you were seen going into
[22:53] Speaker 4: a bungalow over on South Bronson, the same neighborhood as
[22:56] Speaker 4: a club where you work. We got a pretty good idea.
[22:58] Speaker 4: This quite a bit of loot from burglary store in
[23:00] Speaker 4: that house.
[23:00] Speaker 5: I don't follow his sergeant. I don't know what you mean.
[23:02] Speaker 5: I don't live on South Bronson. I live here. You
[23:04] Speaker 5: ought to be able to tell that you were seen
[23:06] Speaker 5: going into the bungalow alan About five minutes past six tonight,
[23:09] Speaker 5: we found a stolen hunting raffle in the house. It
[23:12] Speaker 5: was taken in a burglary. You think you want to
[23:14] Speaker 5: tell us about No, I can't tell you anything about it.
[23:17] Speaker 5: I don't have any bungalow on South Bronson. I'm not
[23:19] Speaker 5: even sure I can tell you where this treet is.
[23:21] Speaker 4: Then you better get your hat, mister, we'll show you.
[23:26] Speaker 4: Eleven forty eight pm, we got in the car and
[23:29] Speaker 4: started driving down Beverly Boulevard back toward the bungalow on
[23:32] Speaker 4: South Bronson Avenue. When we got to the bungalow, the
[23:35] Speaker 4: suspect still refused to admit that he had a key
[23:37] Speaker 4: to the door or that he was in any way
[23:39] Speaker 4: concerned with the place. We had him empty his pockets,
[23:42] Speaker 4: and among his possessions we found a ring of keys.
[23:45] Speaker 4: We tried them on the front door of the bungalow.
[23:48] Speaker 4: The fourth when we tried opened it, we went inside.
[23:51] Speaker 4: Alan still would admit nothing. Ben contacted the landlady next
[23:55] Speaker 4: door and she said she'd be right over. I continued
[23:58] Speaker 4: questioning him while Ben checked through the house again.
[24:00] Speaker 5: Hey, Joel, yo, you want to come back here. I
[24:03] Speaker 5: think we've got some.
[24:04] Speaker 4: All right, Ben? You want to go ahead back here?
[24:06] Speaker 2: Ellen?
[24:06] Speaker 5: Sure? Okay? I still can't tell you what the score is.
[24:09] Speaker 5: So I don't belong in this place. It ain't mine.
[24:12] Speaker 4: What key you head? Seemed to fit the front door?
[24:13] Speaker 4: All right?
[24:14] Speaker 5: How do you figure that that doesn't mean anything? I
[24:16] Speaker 5: had that key for years. I think it's a skeleton
[24:18] Speaker 5: key opens almost any kind of life down here, Joe,
[24:21] Speaker 5: small basement here leads right down off the kitch. All right,
[24:23] Speaker 5: go ahead, Allen, have a look, Joe. Line of cupboards
[24:33] Speaker 5: all the way around here. Check them for yourself. Yeah,
[24:39] Speaker 5: it's a pretty good haul.
[24:40] Speaker 4: Furs, machinist tools, jewelry, quite a bit of it here,
[24:47] Speaker 4: A couple of radios, two more hunting rifles. Come on,
[24:52] Speaker 4: how about it, Alan, I want to save time for
[24:54] Speaker 4: all of us.
[24:54] Speaker 5: Now, you got it wrong. Sorry, I think this isn't
[24:57] Speaker 5: my place. I told you when I got out of
[24:58] Speaker 5: that trouble back east, I made a my mind. I
[25:00] Speaker 5: was all washed up with this kind of stuff. This
[25:03] Speaker 5: house is mine. I haven't got anything to do with it.
[25:04] Speaker 5: You're a kid and yourself, Allan, you know that. Oh
[25:07] Speaker 5: you got it all wrong, you got it all mixed up. Well,
[25:09] Speaker 5: we'll let the landlady tell.
[25:10] Speaker 4: Us the woman who owns this house. She's on her
[25:13] Speaker 4: way over from next door. She ought to be able
[25:14] Speaker 4: to tell us who she ranted the place to. Wouldn't
[25:17] Speaker 4: you say so? Wouldn't you?
[25:22] Speaker 5: She might be wrong? It's possible now.
[25:25] Speaker 4: Look we got you did the right to mister, why
[25:26] Speaker 4: not face it?
[25:29] Speaker 5: Can't? I won't do it. I made up my mind
[25:31] Speaker 5: the last time it wouldn't happen again. I was all
[25:35] Speaker 5: washed up with it. I won't go through it again.
[25:36] Speaker 5: They will send me back and we'll be able to
[25:38] Speaker 5: take it. Maybe you should have figured that before you
[25:40] Speaker 5: started in. I didn't mean too. I was all washed
[25:44] Speaker 5: up with that stuff. I told you that the first
[25:45] Speaker 5: time I saw you. Didn't I know sure of it too.
[25:49] Speaker 5: I wouldn't try it again, didn't pay. It's just what
[25:54] Speaker 5: I told you. I'm all through with it, and I
[25:56] Speaker 5: washed up with it. I never lied to you, did
[25:58] Speaker 5: I what's the difference? Humph, you lie to yourself.
[26:09] Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
[26:13] Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
[26:15] Speaker 3: On July sixth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
[26:18] Speaker 3: eighty sixth, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
[26:21] Speaker 3: In a moment, the results of that trial, the apprehension
[26:32] Speaker 3: of the suspect, Jefferson Herald Allan, resulted in clearing twenty
[26:35] Speaker 3: two cases of burglaries committed over the past four months.
[26:39] Speaker 3: Allan was indicted on twenty two counts of first degree
[26:41] Speaker 3: burglary and received sentence. As prescribed by law, first degree
[26:45] Speaker 3: burglary is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for
[26:48] Speaker 3: not less than five years.
[26:50] Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, only two point six patients out of
[26:55] Speaker 2: every hundred reaching the most forward hospitals in Korea died later.
[27:00] Speaker 2: The comparable figure in World War Two was four point five.
[27:05] Speaker 2: According to official medical statements, The almost miraculous success in
[27:09] Speaker 2: saving the lives of casualties is owing in part to
[27:13] Speaker 2: the prompt use of blood plasma on the battle field
[27:15] Speaker 2: and whole blood in military hospitals. Whole blood reduces shock
[27:20] Speaker 2: for potential killer and replaces blood lost through bleeding in
[27:25] Speaker 2: the treatment of many battle casualties. There is no substitute
[27:28] Speaker 2: for blood. Every American who has given blood can and
[27:32] Speaker 2: should feel he personally has contributed directly to the saving
[27:35] Speaker 2: of the life of an American boy. This month, your
[27:39] Speaker 2: country is short three hundred thousand pints of blood. Please
[27:44] Speaker 2: give your blood and save a life.
[27:56] Speaker 3: You have just heard drag met a series of authentic
[27:59] Speaker 3: cases from officials. Technical advice comes from the Office of
[28:02] Speaker 3: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Today's the silver anniversary of NBC.
[28:17] Speaker 1: Welcome Back Our suspect. Kind of got to a point
[28:22] Speaker 1: where I was like, oh, come on, Now. Certainly I
[28:26] Speaker 1: respect that a criminal does not have to choose to
[28:29] Speaker 1: incriminate him or herself, but I would have a lot
[28:32] Speaker 1: more respect for a criminal who plams up and takes
[28:37] Speaker 1: the fifth rather than continuing on with the lame denials.
[28:41] Speaker 1: I mean, when they got to the point where they
[28:43] Speaker 1: were going to bring the landlady over and he was like, well,
[28:47] Speaker 1: she could be mistaken before she even identified him, I
[28:51] Speaker 1: was like, oh, come on. And kind of the same
[28:54] Speaker 1: thing with his insistence that, you know, his statement that
[28:59] Speaker 1: he was done with that after he got out of prison,
[29:03] Speaker 1: which they were supposed to take as something that indicated
[29:09] Speaker 1: his good intentions. But I have so much trouble buying that. Now.
[29:14] Speaker 1: Let's be clear, there are crimes that you can commit
[29:19] Speaker 1: on a whim. You know, you get back into the
[29:21] Speaker 1: wrong sort of environment and you make a bad choice
[29:27] Speaker 1: and you can find yourself committing a similar crime, re offending.
[29:32] Speaker 1: But burglary is such a premedicated crime. You don't just
[29:37] Speaker 1: randomly burglarize the place. You've got to make sure that
[29:41] Speaker 1: it's worth burglarizing, and you've also got to make sure
[29:45] Speaker 1: that it's a place that you can access without being
[29:49] Speaker 1: easily detected. So I don't like a criminal who insults
[29:53] Speaker 1: our intelligence, which I kind of feel like it did.
[29:56] Speaker 1: All right, Listener comments and feedback now, and we have
[29:59] Speaker 1: a couple comments on Spotify regarding the Big Lease Mechanics.
[30:04] Speaker 1: Sixty six rites after hearing Harry Bartel try a Mexican accent,
[30:09] Speaker 1: I'm glad he didn't try a French accent on that
[30:12] Speaker 1: escape episode with Jack Webb as an OSS agent. And
[30:18] Speaker 1: then Harrison says she might have been a criminal, but
[30:21] Speaker 1: at least she could properly pronounce Julio credit where credit
[30:25] Speaker 1: is due, I guess, and then Lucifer Sam says, hey, Adam,
[30:28] Speaker 1: Joe says, all we know are the facts, ma'am at
[30:32] Speaker 1: the twenty minute mark. I think that's the closest I've
[30:35] Speaker 1: heard to just the facts, man. Yeah, And of course
[30:38] Speaker 1: I think it's a very different context because in that case,
[30:43] Speaker 1: he was explaining their investigation. But the framing and it
[30:48] Speaker 1: comes I think from the Sanfrey Bert parody, and the
[30:51] Speaker 1: way it gets interpreted is that that's something that Joe
[30:55] Speaker 1: Friday says when questioning witnesses, and it's not. And I mean,
[31:02] Speaker 1: I think there are two things I hate about that idea.
[31:06] Speaker 1: Number one, it's route and second is that I think
[31:11] Speaker 1: it's a bad way to question witnesses because the witnesses
[31:16] Speaker 1: and one thing that I think you do hear from Dragnet,
[31:20] Speaker 1: and I think it's a very good lesson, is that
[31:24] Speaker 1: not everyone understands what the pertinent facts are, and there
[31:29] Speaker 1: are details that are going to be forgotten, particularly if
[31:33] Speaker 1: you sit there and you rush the witness. And where
[31:37] Speaker 1: they tend to have some success is by questioning the witness,
[31:42] Speaker 1: letting them tell the story as they experienced it, asking
[31:48] Speaker 1: follow up questions and then if and there are sometimes
[31:52] Speaker 1: where a witness just goes completely off the rails, where
[31:56] Speaker 1: we have gone so far from any sort of relevant
[32:00] Speaker 1: that they need to get them back on track. And
[32:05] Speaker 1: so what Friday will say in that instance is, oh,
[32:09] Speaker 1: that's very interesting, ma'am. But now I'd like to talk
[32:12] Speaker 1: a little bit more about the car you saw? Could
[32:16] Speaker 1: you tell us? And then pushes it back towards what's relevant.
[32:20] Speaker 1: But I appreciate the comment and the opportunity to go
[32:25] Speaker 1: on more about why I don't like that iconic phrase
[32:29] Speaker 1: that is associated with one of my favorite programs, but
[32:32] Speaker 1: was never actually setting it. All Right, now, let's go
