[1:04] Speaker 1: Now from October sixth, nineteen fifty one, here is the
[1:08] Speaker 1: Lowly Nelson murder case.
[1:24] Speaker 2: Broadways My Beat from Time Square to Columbus Circle with Gaudius,
[1:28] Speaker 2: the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world.
[1:36] Speaker 3: Broadways My Beat with Larry Thor as Detective Danny Kober.
[1:55] Speaker 2: Broadway's glitter is soft, easy on the eye. The glint
[1:58] Speaker 2: of pavements has not yet each its nighttime sene. The
[2:02] Speaker 2: stone is still warm from the touch of twilight, and
[2:04] Speaker 2: the neon has not yet fled into scarlet.
[2:07] Speaker 4: The voices that screamed against the day are quiet, and
[2:10] Speaker 4: now the walk slower.
[2:12] Speaker 2: It's the end between time and the day. Is not
[2:14] Speaker 2: yet yielded to Wanton Knight. It's the end of a tier.
[2:18] Speaker 2: Time before the next one scars your cheek. It's your time, kid,
[2:22] Speaker 2: So hold it close. Broadway's clock spins fast, and and
[2:31] Speaker 2: where the dust touches Knight, it walks you through the
[2:33] Speaker 2: arch on Washington Square packed.
[2:35] Speaker 4: The woman whose fearful eyes are on a child balanced.
[2:37] Speaker 2: From the edge of a fountain, across a quiet street
[2:40] Speaker 2: and into a brown stone hung with mirrors and crystal,
[2:44] Speaker 2: and death is reflected many times over. The man who
[2:47] Speaker 2: kneels beside it gives you the moment to consider it.
[2:50] Speaker 4: Then opposite to you.
[2:52] Speaker 5: Last trist last week, my wife made me buy tickets
[2:58] Speaker 5: to play while I could get with sometime next June.
[3:01] Speaker 4: She was sold out that far last risks. You got
[3:05] Speaker 4: her past, beautiful Danny, So.
[3:10] Speaker 5: I never thought I'd stand so.
[3:11] Speaker 4: Close to her. I said, yeah, yeah, how I got here?
[3:14] Speaker 4: It was phoned in, Danny.
[3:15] Speaker 6: Anonymous call said.
[3:16] Speaker 4: Lily Nelson was in trouble. As anonymous, we got to
[3:19] Speaker 4: trace her. By the time you get back to the headquarters,
[3:22] Speaker 4: maybe we found her like this. Yeah, the door was open.
[3:27] Speaker 5: I walked under all these crystal chandeliers, passed all the
[3:31] Speaker 5: mirrors underlying in front of this one, just like that,
[3:36] Speaker 5: that material.
[3:38] Speaker 6: It's like a veil, Danny.
[3:39] Speaker 4: It's no one with her. And I looked through the house.
[3:42] Speaker 6: She leave nothing, Danny, just the razor blade by her side.
[3:45] Speaker 4: That's Lily Nelson.
[3:50] Speaker 5: You got to go to ticket scoppers, begg him to
[3:52] Speaker 5: sell you a ticket over price, just so you can
[3:54] Speaker 5: watch it.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Where should she kill herself for what?
[4:02] Speaker 2: And suddenly catch the image of yourself in a ceiling
[4:05] Speaker 2: to floor mirror. The dark gray suit, striped tie, shoe
[4:09] Speaker 2: slightly scuffed and on the floor next to them, blonde hair,
[4:13] Speaker 2: white face, neglichet and slashed wrists. Image of a policeman
[4:18] Speaker 2: at work. Turn your back on it, put a subordinate
[4:20] Speaker 2: from charge, walk out and back at headquarters. Be assured
[4:27] Speaker 2: that other policemen had been at work. The anonymous phone
[4:30] Speaker 2: call had been traced, the collar apprehended, arrested, drop down
[4:33] Speaker 2: town with waiting for you. So flip a switch on
[4:36] Speaker 2: the intercom. Yeah, Danny, bring him in, geno right, Wait
[4:41] Speaker 2: and wonder briefly at the pattern of it. Repeated too often.
[4:44] Speaker 2: Why a beautiful woman the peak of her career must
[4:47] Speaker 2: have the fine edge of a razor to the opening door,
[4:51] Speaker 2: closes your mind to it.
[4:53] Speaker 4: Here, That'll be all you know, all right. You can
[4:58] Speaker 4: said I wasn't sure, That's why I called. I knocked
[5:00] Speaker 4: the way I always do.
[5:01] Speaker 7: And she didn't answer, and right away. I can't explain
[5:04] Speaker 7: it that I had a feeling that sat up. That's
[5:06] Speaker 7: the only way I can explain it, the feeling.
[5:11] Speaker 4: What's your name?
[5:12] Speaker 8: Columbo?
[5:12] Speaker 4: Frank Columbu? You see the read? Do I drive her?
[5:16] Speaker 6: I'm a chauffeur. That's why I think it could be.
[5:18] Speaker 7: Any other reason why a guy like Nika knock on
[5:20] Speaker 7: her door?
[5:22] Speaker 4: What do you know about it?
[5:23] Speaker 7: Just take it easy, Frank, tell me about it. Seven
[5:25] Speaker 7: o'clock I called for her to take as the theater.
[5:28] Speaker 7: She didn't answer.
[5:29] Speaker 6: My not never happened before.
[5:32] Speaker 4: I got worried. I called you police. Why didn't you
[5:35] Speaker 4: give your name? Maybe I was being crazy being worried.
[5:37] Speaker 6: But you don't know.
[5:39] Speaker 7: You don't know what I shouldn't I worry. You know
[5:43] Speaker 7: what she was, Willie Nelson? I know you know I
[5:48] Speaker 7: drove her, mister. I think I cared about the men
[5:51] Speaker 7: who sat with her made it last.
[5:54] Speaker 9: None of them I did.
[5:58] Speaker 7: I've seen her cry, Oh seen her cry when she
[6:03] Speaker 7: was alone, sitting there in the back of the car. Cry,
[6:10] Speaker 7: I'm the man who's seen Lily Nelson cry.
[6:13] Speaker 6: You know what a woman feels for a man when
[6:15] Speaker 6: she see it.
[6:16] Speaker 4: Cry, Yeah, better get him. You know it's gonna happen.
[6:22] Speaker 7: One day she find out I wasn't like look at me.
[6:29] Speaker 2: And in the moments against his being taken away, listen
[6:37] Speaker 2: to the man cry out his love.
[6:39] Speaker 4: They waited for love, night dream reflected in a rear
[6:42] Speaker 4: view mirror.
[6:43] Speaker 2: Finally it was all spilled out. The words became syllables
[6:47] Speaker 2: of anguish and lost. Watched the officer take his arm gently,
[6:51] Speaker 2: lead him to a place where pain is made, articulates,
[6:54] Speaker 2: give him reason.
[6:55] Speaker 4: Noted in files.
[7:00] Speaker 2: Ah then gather up the publicized elements that had contrived
[7:05] Speaker 2: to give life to Lily Nelson, then taken.
[7:07] Speaker 4: It from her.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Her appearance one night in a mediocre play, the two
[7:11] Speaker 2: line favorable review, the nurturing of it until it became
[7:15] Speaker 2: columns and stardom, and at the crest of it, the
[7:18] Speaker 2: play now running, The Forsaken, starring Lily Nelson, produced by
[7:22] Speaker 2: Jason Gieber Crane Theater, And remember that Broadway whispered of
[7:26] Speaker 2: Geever as the star maker, the first to give Lily
[7:28] Speaker 2: a leading role. Without him, Lily would have remained a
[7:31] Speaker 2: walk on a spear carrier. Go to the theater, ask
[7:35] Speaker 2: for him, he told he.
[7:36] Speaker 4: Was in his office at the head of the balcony.
[7:38] Speaker 4: Find him suffering over the Knight's box office report.
[7:41] Speaker 2: Someone told you you could see me. They were wrong, Police,
[7:44] Speaker 2: It's still wrong.
[7:45] Speaker 4: Lily Nelson.
[7:46] Speaker 2: You came here to tell me about Lily personally out of.
[7:50] Speaker 4: Your own mouth.
[7:52] Speaker 2: What's the technical praise for the butchering of Lily's risks?
[7:55] Speaker 2: Tell me i'd want to know. Am eager for crumbs
[7:59] Speaker 2: of information?
[7:59] Speaker 4: Saw am?
[7:59] Speaker 2: I that should make it easier for us. You walked
[8:02] Speaker 2: through my theater and saw the empty seat. That's what
[8:06] Speaker 2: it is without Lily Rose of emptiness tomorrow. I closed
[8:09] Speaker 2: the play.
[8:10] Speaker 4: Because your box office report shows a loss.
[8:13] Speaker 2: You're trying to shame me, police, and it won't work.
[8:16] Speaker 2: Lily meant money to me and thought ache and laugh.
[8:20] Speaker 2: I could count on the fingers of my left hand.
[8:24] Speaker 2: It's all here in the box office report. It sounded
[8:27] Speaker 2: like a man who was Now you're going to say
[8:29] Speaker 2: I was in love with him? Now what you're going
[8:31] Speaker 2: to say?
[8:32] Speaker 4: All right, you're in love with her? I know you'd
[8:34] Speaker 4: be wrong. No, not me, but Lily.
[8:39] Speaker 2: All the major male stops from here to Hollywood and
[8:43] Speaker 2: back maybe, and a few crests and crowns across the
[8:46] Speaker 2: ocean never met. He didn't touch me that way, the
[8:51] Speaker 2: emotional climate between it, said Nick Jason Nixon.
[8:55] Speaker 4: All Lily was to you was.
[8:57] Speaker 2: A punk kid I saw in a play. She had
[9:01] Speaker 2: something radiant sized to mention death.
[9:03] Speaker 4: Who knows what?
[9:05] Speaker 2: All I know is I brought it out in her
[9:08] Speaker 2: once I drank champagne from her slipper. I was so
[9:11] Speaker 2: pleased with the performance she gave. Then as the slipper
[9:16] Speaker 2: around to her riscal you gave her all laugh and
[9:18] Speaker 2: she's dead. Why maybe her current claims are burning lulls?
[9:23] Speaker 4: O excuse the cliche? Where would they be?
[9:27] Speaker 2: Who the one that gives the columnists daily bread? The
[9:32] Speaker 2: love of Lily? For the boy who directed her in
[9:34] Speaker 2: this play, David Knight. The other well, her psychiatrist, doctor
[9:39] Speaker 2: Kobak of Park Avenue. He's loved by tons of women.
[9:43] Speaker 2: Lily wasn't one to be left standing out in the rain.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Something else for you of the pully quiet. Whatever I
[9:53] Speaker 2: probed out of Lily to make her give a performance,
[9:55] Speaker 2: the one emotion I couldn't get from her was the
[9:57] Speaker 2: emotion for self destruction, very definite.
[10:02] Speaker 10: Life in here, miss, Thank you.
[10:15] Speaker 6: Doctors there cigars in the human door by your arm,
[10:21] Speaker 6: doctor Colbac And understand the ninety is you see, and
[10:26] Speaker 6: I entertained friends of mine. You called me away from them.
[10:31] Speaker 6: Therefore you interrupt.
[10:32] Speaker 7: It's a matter of importance, doctor, you see, and he's
[10:34] Speaker 7: no manage, mainly the stating that you interrupt.
[10:38] Speaker 4: So if you will be brief.
[10:39] Speaker 2: It's about Lollie Nelson. Yes, you're her doctor, her psychiatrist.
[10:43] Speaker 2: I want you to tell me about her, about her. Listen, doctor,
[10:48] Speaker 2: a woman is dead. It looks like suicide. It probably
[10:51] Speaker 2: is suicide. The reason I'm questioning you is routine police procedure,
[10:55] Speaker 2: just to satisfy ourselves it was suicide, so we know
[10:57] Speaker 2: what it was, not to resigned what it was not suicide?
[11:02] Speaker 4: How do you know? Yeah, man, Linny.
[11:06] Speaker 6: Did not slash Harry. How does one know something?
[11:11] Speaker 4: I know? All right? You know? How do you know
[11:13] Speaker 4: what the police don't know?
[11:14] Speaker 6: But you have already paid it. Then I'm a psychiatrist,
[11:18] Speaker 6: Lily was too much in love with herself.
[11:20] Speaker 7: And usually did even a hair on her head. As
[11:24] Speaker 7: for slashing Harris, if you agree with.
[11:27] Speaker 2: Me, ridiculous, I'm not so sure. She was found dead
[11:31] Speaker 2: in front of a mirror. Wouldn't that fit in with
[11:33] Speaker 2: what you said?
[11:34] Speaker 11: Not?
[11:34] Speaker 6: In the contrary, Lenny couldn't bear the shock of seeing herself.
[11:38] Speaker 4: She paid. You're telling me she was murdered.
[11:40] Speaker 6: Doctor Many that she did not commit to his high Now.
[11:45] Speaker 2: If he's in a ministon, a woman like Willie Nelson
[11:48] Speaker 2: would have a lot of admirers, wouldn't she, dear.
[11:51] Speaker 6: Man, They will admire upon admire you. Yeah, man, I'm
[11:58] Speaker 6: old enough to well a fascic a Lily notes she
[12:04] Speaker 6: was in love with me. I see, which, of course
[12:08] Speaker 6: you do not. She loved me as all women love
[12:11] Speaker 6: their psychiatrists. It was Lily's protection of ourselves for telling.
[12:15] Speaker 7: Me her secrets about her secrets.
[12:18] Speaker 6: None really fashionable for an actress to have a psychiatrist.
[12:24] Speaker 6: She was neurotic, mister Clover, to a degree dependent upon
[12:27] Speaker 6: your tolerance and comprehension, nindly neurotic, I would say, but
[12:32] Speaker 6: then aren't you I whatever?
[12:36] Speaker 4: Now, if you will pardon me, thank you, mister Clover
[12:49] Speaker 4: and be answered.
[12:50] Speaker 2: Out of the library biom and p asked the guests
[12:53] Speaker 2: who resented alien feet walking through a string port. She
[12:56] Speaker 2: finally walked through a door and get out. Then one
[13:03] Speaker 2: more stopped to make so. The other man whose name
[13:05] Speaker 2: had been told me David Knight. David Knight, director of
[13:09] Speaker 2: Lily Nelson's Shaw, go to Heim ask him whether he
[13:12] Speaker 2: thought Lily Nelson committed suicide and human.
[13:24] Speaker 4: Okay, what do you want? Police? I I shall not.
[13:31] Speaker 4: I shall not be the night andale seen on existent pain.
[13:36] Speaker 11: And dreaming through the twilight that does not rise.
[13:41] Speaker 4: Happily I may remember, and happily.
[13:45] Speaker 9: May That was Lily, Lily Nelson. She made that record
[13:53] Speaker 9: for you, Lily. Mister Knight, who are you?
[13:58] Speaker 4: What do you want? I told Japan to police.
[14:01] Speaker 12: Since I heard, ever since the news was told me,
[14:06] Speaker 12: I've been here listening to her.
[14:10] Speaker 4: She's talking to me. Listen.
[14:15] Speaker 11: Listen to Lily and I Am sid my dear sing
[14:20] Speaker 11: no sad songs for me sent down and roses at
[14:24] Speaker 11: my head.
[14:25] Speaker 4: Lily Lily, I killed you. I killed you.
[14:30] Speaker 11: I'm a murder.
[14:45] Speaker 3: You are listening to Broadways My beat written by Morton
[14:48] Speaker 3: Fine and David Fried and I'm starring Larry Thora's detective
[14:51] Speaker 3: Danny Clover.
[15:02] Speaker 2: When it's October and autumn catches hold, Broadway comes up
[15:05] Speaker 2: with a miracle. The leaves and red and gold are
[15:08] Speaker 2: pasted in flight in shop windows. The stuffed squirrels nibble
[15:12] Speaker 2: at plastic acorns. The mannequins smile their autumn smile and
[15:15] Speaker 2: emotion compounded of wax and the new mink coat. Minor
[15:19] Speaker 2: miracles may also be observed. Pink and cheeks, a spring
[15:23] Speaker 2: of your step, and fresh air. It's a new time
[15:26] Speaker 2: on Broadway. It's a new season. Open the installment account, Kid.
[15:30] Speaker 2: The world is yours, and where I was was a
[15:37] Speaker 2: world compounded on a different stuff, pain and grief, the
[15:40] Speaker 2: smashed remnants of two lives, and the residue of all
[15:43] Speaker 2: of it. A man named David Knight, a man who
[15:46] Speaker 2: said he was a murderer.
[15:46] Speaker 4: I killed it, killed it.
[15:49] Speaker 2: You held her down and slashed her wrists and watched her.
[15:52] Speaker 2: Why why you don't know why? Because you loved her,
[15:56] Speaker 2: and because I loved her, oh lovely, because she loved me,
[16:02] Speaker 2: she loved me.
[16:03] Speaker 4: I wouldn't have her love she killed her? You mean
[16:06] Speaker 4: you didn't kill her, Yes.
[16:07] Speaker 1: I did.
[16:08] Speaker 11: It's my faults.
[16:08] Speaker 4: He's dead. I don't just see. Don't you understand, No,
[16:12] Speaker 4: I don't. I suppose I owe it to love her,
[16:16] Speaker 4: but I couldn't. And you were telling me she committed suicide.
[16:19] Speaker 4: But it was my fault. She don't you understand that
[16:22] Speaker 4: I'm a murderer. I'm a killer. I killed Lillie Nelson
[16:26] Speaker 4: just as surely as if you didn't kill her. Wasn't
[16:28] Speaker 4: your fault. I'll show you don't be a fool. I
[16:31] Speaker 4: show you. You've got a gun. Why don't you shoot me?
[16:39] Speaker 4: That's what you want me to do, is yeah, because
[16:43] Speaker 4: of what I did to her, I can book here
[16:45] Speaker 4: for assault yesternight, not for murder.
[16:50] Speaker 12: You're okay, it's I'm sorry, forget it.
[16:56] Speaker 4: It's funny. Lily's dead. She's dead, all of us sudden.
[17:03] Speaker 4: I'm in love with and give the boy his release.
[17:11] Speaker 4: In his own cognizance, watching kneel to the.
[17:13] Speaker 2: Floor, gathered up the fragments of poetry, once spoken only
[17:16] Speaker 2: for him by Lily Nelson, and now only jagged pieces
[17:19] Speaker 2: of a phonograph record. Watch as he holds them for
[17:22] Speaker 2: a moment, then flings them into the wastebasket, then leave
[17:27] Speaker 2: him with it. Then walk the edge of the night
[17:35] Speaker 2: to a room where a sleep will come to you,
[17:37] Speaker 2: because it's a long time coming. Fill in the darkness
[17:40] Speaker 2: with the memory of a girl who lay in death
[17:41] Speaker 2: before a ceiling high mirror. Enlist the varying opinions of
[17:45] Speaker 2: her dying. Her chauffeur who was frightened because Lily hadn't
[17:48] Speaker 2: answered the door. Her producer who found in Lily no
[17:52] Speaker 2: emotion that would warrant her suicide. Her psychiatrist who thought
[17:56] Speaker 2: the same but for a different reason. Her director, who
[17:59] Speaker 2: believe the dead because of a love he wouldn't bestow
[18:01] Speaker 2: on her. Finally, sleep had entered the room in the morning.
[18:14] Speaker 2: Back to the office, Back to the paperwork. Annie, come in,
[18:20] Speaker 2: gin know.
[18:22] Speaker 4: I give you.
[18:26] Speaker 7: Bless you nice of you to think of me at
[18:28] Speaker 7: moments like this, not at all me in the midst
[18:31] Speaker 7: of my blessure, who needs it?
[18:35] Speaker 6: Just hand me to those contissue in my breast potio,
[18:40] Speaker 6: you know.
[18:42] Speaker 4: Thank you.
[18:45] Speaker 6: Now to the affairs of the day, which.
[18:46] Speaker 7: Amount to practically mill this little notes and beloved starve
[18:50] Speaker 7: the stage was indeed beloved male admirers, the stun the imagination.
[18:55] Speaker 6: We knock when we entered Danny Clover's office.
[18:57] Speaker 4: Miss that's all right. What can I do for you?
[19:02] Speaker 11: I'm Jeanie Cochran. I feel you want to know about me.
[19:06] Speaker 4: Oh why?
[19:08] Speaker 11: I was a great and true friend of Lillly Nelson.
[19:11] Speaker 4: And you wanted to tell me about it? Of course
[19:12] Speaker 4: I do, all right, miss cochin.
[19:16] Speaker 11: It started last year. I came to New York. You see,
[19:18] Speaker 11: my home is not running. I came to New York
[19:21] Speaker 11: and I had a grand idea. It was Thanksgiving vacation
[19:25] Speaker 11: and I was on my high school paper, and I
[19:27] Speaker 11: thought it would be a grand idea to get an
[19:29] Speaker 11: interview with Lily.
[19:31] Speaker 4: And I did I see them? What happened?
[19:34] Speaker 11: Lily was so nice to me when I told her
[19:37] Speaker 11: about my dramatics and how I was in all my
[19:39] Speaker 11: school plays. You know what she said?
[19:42] Speaker 4: No I don't.
[19:43] Speaker 11: She said I had the making of a great actress.
[19:46] Speaker 11: I didn't believe her, but she was really serious.
[19:48] Speaker 4: Oh of course she was.
[19:51] Speaker 11: He came up to not running and visited me. Mother
[19:53] Speaker 11: was flabbergast. Then really started to come up and stay
[19:57] Speaker 11: almost every weekend. Another sixed up a room so we
[20:00] Speaker 11: could be alone together while we were working.
[20:02] Speaker 4: That's funny. I've talked to a lot of people who
[20:04] Speaker 4: knew miss Nelson. None of them ever mentioned you.
[20:07] Speaker 11: We kept it a secret. It was our secret really
[20:10] Speaker 11: is in mine.
[20:12] Speaker 4: What else did she do for you?
[20:14] Speaker 11: Every weekend? President? What this one dress I'm wearing? Picnics
[20:22] Speaker 11: and rides? So many things?
[20:24] Speaker 4: Did you ever meet any of her other friends?
[20:28] Speaker 11: We had a secret friendship. No, oh's all, isn't mister Koch.
[20:51] Speaker 6: Again, I'm not telling you, mister cloy. We just have
[20:53] Speaker 6: a bad time. As many patients wait upon me.
[20:56] Speaker 2: I'm sure they'll understand when you've told them how a
[20:57] Speaker 2: policeman came to you for help.
[20:59] Speaker 6: You are in need of it all, and you use
[21:02] Speaker 6: your authority.
[21:03] Speaker 4: You told me before all of us? Are you?
[21:06] Speaker 6: Me, everybody and your trouble year man?
[21:09] Speaker 7: People keep things from me. Smile for themselves when I
[21:12] Speaker 7: leave a room, because there's so much smarter than I am.
[21:15] Speaker 6: Dear man, this is no extraordinary ailment to suffer. Well,
[21:19] Speaker 6: it is ordinary.
[21:20] Speaker 4: It bothers me. You smile to yourself when I leave
[21:22] Speaker 4: a room, Doctor Kovac, I did that to you. I
[21:26] Speaker 4: asked it for Lily Nelson's secrets.
[21:27] Speaker 7: You told me there weren't any even if there had been,
[21:30] Speaker 7: I have the right as a professional man.
[21:32] Speaker 6: Is a manu scapture in your community.
[21:33] Speaker 2: To deny them to any of our community has a
[21:35] Speaker 2: law against people who withhold evidence and murders.
[21:38] Speaker 6: Your conclusion, the Indian man, is that really? Let's kick
[21:43] Speaker 6: it around for a while, shall we.
[21:44] Speaker 7: Doctor, I could commit myself to be taken by the law,
[21:48] Speaker 7: to be prosecuted parrah, and you'd keep your mouth shut.
[21:51] Speaker 4: Man.
[21:52] Speaker 2: We'll hire our own psychiatrists. They can do every secret
[21:55] Speaker 2: Lily ever shared with anyone.
[21:57] Speaker 6: You treason, dear man, let's call it an all really
[22:02] Speaker 6: will be remembered. The revolution, Ford, the access at her
[22:05] Speaker 6: time a burner, I do say, a flame of classic beauty,
[22:11] Speaker 6: a passion brought to life for men whose life were empty.
[22:15] Speaker 6: Unpush you wish to destroy this, this memory.
[22:21] Speaker 4: We believe she was murdered, and I too. Yeah, man,
[22:27] Speaker 4: you told me she was loved.
[22:28] Speaker 2: Admirers were the legion you said I was not live,
[22:31] Speaker 2: but lowly we let me gather my thoughts away to.
[22:35] Speaker 6: Perhaps this will make it clear. It is true Lily
[22:42] Speaker 6: was loved, but in her there was no love to return.
[22:46] Speaker 4: Go on.
[22:48] Speaker 6: Nearly had not the capacity for love. She pretended to
[22:52] Speaker 6: be her admires with me too. Every particle of love
[23:00] Speaker 6: that Lily had to give, she gave to the state.
[23:02] Speaker 6: Every emotion she had was how do I present it
[23:04] Speaker 6: on the stage?
[23:05] Speaker 4: What people? Every passion, every desire, every What was there
[23:11] Speaker 4: left for Lily to give to another? Nothing? Nothing? Nothing?
[23:20] Speaker 4: Thank you doctor for what that?
[23:23] Speaker 6: You now have motive for the murder, and for this
[23:26] Speaker 6: you will destroy the image of Lily Nelson. You say
[23:31] Speaker 6: to me, thank you, I cannot say to you.
[23:35] Speaker 4: You are welcome.
[23:38] Speaker 6: My other patients great upon me.
[23:40] Speaker 12: Mister Clover, Oh well, mister Clover one n.
[24:05] Speaker 4: Can I get you something? Bourban Scott. I'm not interrupting something,
[24:09] Speaker 4: am I? What do you mean? Two drinks over there?
[24:13] Speaker 4: I've been clumsy. No, you're not interrupting. Jenny, Come on in,
[24:22] Speaker 4: it's late, miss Talkland. Don't you have to get back
[24:23] Speaker 4: to Mount Vernham?
[24:24] Speaker 11: No, I call mother. She knows where I am.
[24:26] Speaker 4: What are you doing here?
[24:27] Speaker 11: I had an idea. I've just told her to mister Knight.
[24:30] Speaker 4: He seems to agree with me an idea about what.
[24:32] Speaker 4: This child's a fine actress. She wants me to work
[24:35] Speaker 4: with it.
[24:35] Speaker 11: After all, Lily taught me so much. Mister Knight's already
[24:39] Speaker 11: listened to me read he says, I even found that room.
[24:42] Speaker 4: She does, mister, that's why you want to work with her.
[24:44] Speaker 4: The best reason in the world for you. Yeah, I
[24:47] Speaker 4: can create another Lily Nelson with this child.
[24:50] Speaker 11: Child, I'm going to learn not to be a child.
[24:52] Speaker 11: That's why I came.
[24:53] Speaker 4: I think you ought to go back to Mount Vernon, Joanney,
[24:55] Speaker 4: thank you.
[24:56] Speaker 2: I think you ought to go back to Mount Vernon
[24:57] Speaker 2: because what happened to Lily Nelson might.
[24:59] Speaker 4: Happen to you.
[25:00] Speaker 2: What do you mean, what happened to Lily murdered by you?
[25:03] Speaker 2: I told you that, but I was just, I know, upset.
[25:06] Speaker 2: But you really did murder It really did slash her wrists.
[25:09] Speaker 11: Oh no, that's not right. And I told me what happened.
[25:13] Speaker 11: He didn't love Lily, so she killed herself.
[25:15] Speaker 2: That's the way it was, Jane, not exactly. Lily wasn't
[25:18] Speaker 2: in love with anybody. Her daughter told me that she
[25:20] Speaker 2: was in love with one thing, the theater. It was
[25:22] Speaker 2: her obsession. She didn't have the energy to love anything else.
[25:27] Speaker 2: I know, Jamie, she had time for you, because in you,
[25:31] Speaker 2: Lily saw herself a new star another Lily Nelson young fresh.
[25:37] Speaker 2: It's funny.
[25:38] Speaker 4: Huh? What is something's funny?
[25:39] Speaker 2: I laugh and I'm laugh Listen, mister Lily Nelson had
[25:42] Speaker 2: one hundred admirers.
[25:43] Speaker 4: You were just one of them. They all tried to
[25:45] Speaker 4: make love to her and she could never return it.
[25:47] Speaker 4: She cried about it. There's a man or chauffeur a
[25:49] Speaker 4: senior week just for that reason.
[25:51] Speaker 11: That's right. Lilly told me about that.
[25:55] Speaker 4: She loved me. No, you loved her. She couldn't love you.
[25:57] Speaker 4: You killed her.
[25:59] Speaker 11: I want to go home.
[26:00] Speaker 4: Don't listen to him, Jenny. And you, Jannie, so much
[26:03] Speaker 4: like Lily. Your voice, the way you carry yourself, that's
[26:05] Speaker 4: why you're here with him.
[26:06] Speaker 6: Jenny.
[26:08] Speaker 11: Let me go home tonight.
[26:10] Speaker 4: I'll come back.
[26:12] Speaker 11: I'll come back tomorrow. I promise.
[26:15] Speaker 4: Did she teach you that too, Jenny?
[26:17] Speaker 11: Please? I promise?
[26:19] Speaker 4: Do you hear you? Hear that, mister Clover, the way
[26:21] Speaker 4: she said it. Let's go, mister Knight. I'll tell you
[26:24] Speaker 4: what's going to happen to you, Jenny? What happened to Lily?
[26:29] Speaker 4: Listen to me, mister Clover.
[26:31] Speaker 8: Do you think the chauffeur was the only man who
[26:32] Speaker 8: saw Lily cry. I saw her cry too before she died.
[26:39] Speaker 8: She got down on her knees and cried. She said
[26:43] Speaker 8: she wanted to love me. She said she couldn't love me,
[26:45] Speaker 8: She couldn't love anybody.
[26:48] Speaker 4: So she begged me to kill her because she couldn't
[26:51] Speaker 4: love She begged me, beg that I killed her. Do
[27:03] Speaker 4: what he says, Janie go home.
[27:24] Speaker 2: Broadway is having itself a time. It's cocky and needling
[27:28] Speaker 2: people a step over the line. It makes a big
[27:31] Speaker 2: muscle and dares the night time. It's frenzy and big noise,
[27:36] Speaker 2: mostly the.
[27:36] Speaker 4: Noise, otherwise you'd hear a heartbreak. It's Broadway, the gaudiest,
[27:45] Speaker 4: the most violent, the lonesomest mile of the world. Broadway
[27:51] Speaker 4: My Beat.
[28:07] Speaker 3: Broadway's My Beat stars Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover,
[28:11] Speaker 3: with Charles Calvert as Tartaglia and Jack Krushan as Muggavan.
[28:15] Speaker 3: The program was produced and directed by Elliott Lewis, with
[28:19] Speaker 3: musical score composed and conducted by Alexander Courage. In Tonight's story,
[28:24] Speaker 3: Paul Freeze was heard as David Knight, Joyce McCluskey as
[28:27] Speaker 3: Janie Cochrane, Janavello as doctor Kovac, Ed Max as Jason
[28:31] Speaker 3: Gieber and Clayton Post as Frank Columbo.
[28:34] Speaker 4: Bill Anders speaking.
[29:21] Speaker 3: Broadway is My beat has come to you through the
[29:23] Speaker 3: worldwide facilities of the United States Armed Forces Radio and
[29:27] Speaker 3: Television Service.
[30:54] Speaker 1: Welcome back, Well. I liked last week's episode over the calls,
[30:59] Speaker 1: and so I I really do have to praise this one.
[31:02] Speaker 1: I enjoyed it, and I thought it was very well done.
[31:06] Speaker 1: It was a more psychological story, and really this is
[31:12] Speaker 1: one of those cases where at the end of the day,
[31:15] Speaker 1: Danny did not have a case if the guy hadn't confessed,
[31:20] Speaker 1: but the guy's an auto hardened criminal, and there's at
[31:24] Speaker 1: least enough of a level of guilt that Danny's going
[31:27] Speaker 1: to be able to get him to tell the truth.
[31:30] Speaker 1: There were also some really good performances in this. I
[31:34] Speaker 1: love Jane Novello. His character is just so interesting to
[31:39] Speaker 1: listen to and has a unique perspective, a mix of
[31:44] Speaker 1: ethics but also a respect for the persona of who
[31:50] Speaker 1: his patient had been, and his opinions were kind of
[31:53] Speaker 1: reflective of what you would hear from the mental health
[31:58] Speaker 1: profession at the time. Certainly not we would hear today,
[32:01] Speaker 1: but it does capture the view of that era also
[32:07] Speaker 1: found Muggavin's scene interesting because Mugavin is just the matter
[32:15] Speaker 1: of fact professional. This murder affects him in a very
[32:19] Speaker 1: different way, and it's such an interesting scene because Dandy
[32:24] Speaker 1: is trying to lead him back to the facts. I
[32:28] Speaker 1: really just need you to be the guy who gives
[32:32] Speaker 1: me the facts and I'll go brute about it. That's
[32:34] Speaker 1: how this works. But Mugavin having this feeling, this connection,
[32:43] Speaker 1: it actually does illustrate maybe some of the challenges that
[32:49] Speaker 1: she was facing and where are some of her strain
[32:52] Speaker 1: mon have come from. People know of her performances and
[32:57] Speaker 1: her characters, and they assume they know her. They expect
[33:01] Speaker 1: some sort of romantic reciprocal relationship. Now, if it's just
[33:07] Speaker 1: some random stage door do honey, that's one thing. But
[33:12] Speaker 1: as this episode shows, it's not just that powerful men
[33:18] Speaker 1: in her industry who helped make her career also expected
[33:26] Speaker 1: that sort of interest, and all sorts of wealthy men
[33:32] Speaker 1: would go to Broadway shows with fun Broadway shows, and
[33:37] Speaker 1: so incredible amount of pressure that she's under. So while
[33:42] Speaker 1: last week's show was one that I don't think was
[33:46] Speaker 1: actually true to any period that ever happened, this week's
[33:50] Speaker 1: episode I think actually has some relevance to some of
[33:54] Speaker 1: the things that go on in today's world. Now it's
[33:57] Speaker 1: time to think our Patreon supporter of the day, and
[34:00] Speaker 1: I want to go ahead and thank Jeffrey, Patreon supporter

[34:47] Speaker 11: Miss Harmon, I think she's a lot better than OUs
[34:50] Speaker 11: Egeant Robert. The officers would like to talk to you
[34:53] Speaker 11: a few minutes if you feel up to it, all right,
[34:57] Speaker 11: who killed my mother? Have you found out? Not?
[34:59] Speaker 4: Jef, And we think you might be able to help herself.
[35:02] Speaker 11: It's so hard to believe. I just saw her this morning.
[35:04] Speaker 4: She was all right, then, well you try to take
[35:06] Speaker 4: it easy where brother will make it as brief as possible. Now,
[35:08] Speaker 4: you and your mother are the only people living at
[35:10] Speaker 4: your house. No one else, No me and my mother,
[35:12] Speaker 4: that's all.
[35:13] Speaker 11: My father used to live with us. He doesn't anymore.
[35:16] Speaker 4: And how long has it been since your father left?
[35:18] Speaker 11: I'm not sure about five years. I think he and
[35:20] Speaker 11: Mama didn't get along and got divorced.
[35:23] Speaker 4: Do you see your father told her anymore?
[35:24] Speaker 5: I mean, does he ever come to your house to busy?
[35:26] Speaker 11: He did once, it was about a year ago. I
[35:28] Speaker 11: think wasn't much good, and my mother argued all the
[35:32] Speaker 11: time he was there, and he left. He hasn't been
[35:34] Speaker 11: back since.
[35:35] Speaker 4: Has he been in contact at all with your mother?
[35:37] Speaker 4: You know? Does he write her letters? Call her on
[35:39] Speaker 4: the phone?
[35:40] Speaker 11: The last time was when he came to her house.
[35:42] Speaker 11: I haven't heard anything about him since. I don't even
[35:45] Speaker 11: know where he is.
[35:46] Speaker 4: I don't care. I guess I heard.
[35:48] Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime.
